I FEEL LIKE I AM BACK IN COLLEGE. I WAS ASKED TO WRITE MY LETTER TWO WEEKS AGO & I FINALLY SUBMITTED IT, ALBEIT PAST DUE...

During those two weeks, my team and I traveled to Amsterdam, France and Italy and participated in the Monaco Yacht Show, where we represented five spectacular superyachts from our exceptional fleet. The excellent news is that we are all very busy following up leads and offers. It appears that the European economy is becoming more vibrant and optimistic — excellent news for everyone. This flurry of activity makes me smile from ear-to-ear with happiness…speaking of happiness, isn’t that what the yachting industry is all about?

His career spans time at each of the top three international brokerage houses and a Master’s Degree in International Business. He’s a brilliant manager, marketing machine and brings unique insight into our best practices. Daniel has surrounded himself with the best and the brightest in marketing, Alfredo Lopez, Vanessa Jiron, Janine Ketterer and Marieke Derks, in Asia. Northrop & Johnson now boasts the largest and most-experienced yachting marketing team in North America.

Daniel has incorporated several unique I believe the yachting industry, lifestyle missions. First, an intelligent data and hobby serves the primary purpose of system, which allows for faster and more inspiring happiness. At Northrop & Johnson accurate information to help clients make (N&J), we want to bring this happiness better-informed decisions. Second, mobile to the masses — be ambassadors of this applications — available to our brokers joy. In order to do so, we have have leapt and clients, third better exposure at light years ahead with regard to our international boat shows and elsewhere on marketing efforts. Daniel Ziriakus, our the scene. Forth, luxury partnerships — new COO, returned home to N&J in July Navigator is an example of our networking 2014 after two years abroad. efforts with luxury products and partners to spread the word of the joys of yacht chartering, ownership and the lifestyle.

All of the marketing in the world is useless without knowledgeable, skilled brokers and staff. We are constantly recruiting the “best and the brightest” for our team. We offer our clients and crew northing less than the wow experience. The values that began in 1949 are still upheld within the N&J ranks. Our daily mission is to continuously improve the N&J experience by quickly and professionally putting our expertise to work in our clients’ best interests. Despite my tardiness with this introduction — which still makes me feel a bit like the errant college student I was — I’d like to officially welcome you to the newly revamped Northrop & Johnson and Navigator. I’m delighted to be penning such excellent news, on both within the industry and at N&J — it makes me very happy. Enjoy, and we look forward to seeing you around campus!

NORTHROP & JOHNSON’S EXCEPTIONALLY TALENTED & KNOWLEDGEABLE CHARTER BROKERS OFFER THEIR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR A FIRST-TIME CHARTERER...

“A common, and very important, question first-time charterers often ask is ‘how much will my charter cost in total?’ Unless otherwise noted, the charter rate quoted by your broker includes the hire of the yacht, fully equipped with a professional captain and crew. Additional costs include ‘consumables,’ such as fuel, food and beverages, marina fees and ground transportation. In some areas, tax also is an additional charge. Crew gratuities are customary. Your broker will estimate these costs based on your chosen yacht, the itinerary and food and wine preferences. Rest assured that, unlike hotels or restaurants, all ‘consumables’ are charged at cost and the captain will deliver a full account for your approval at the end of the charter.“ Fiona Maureso Charter Broker, South of France

“While a private yacht charter may be a cruising vacation on water, that is where the similarities between a luxury private yacht charter and a cruise ship vacation end. Cruise ship vacations are preset, including dates, itinerary, menus and onboard and shoreside activities. Not one aspect of a private yacht charter is preset. The booking process for a private yacht charter starts with you. To begin, have in mind the vision of your perfect, customized on-water vacation. It may seem like a backwards way of trip planning, however, this ‘backwards’ way of organizing your perfect vacation on a luxury private yacht charter moves this experience forward to ensure the end result is exactly what you have been dreaming of. A luxury yacht charter is all about you — from cruising location, to itinerary, fun activities and menu, even down to your favorite wine label. Expect to tell your charter broker your perfect vision…and we will take it all from there.” Missy Johnston Charter Broker, Newport

“Once you have settled on an experienced broker whom you trust, be sure to ask questions as you explore the options. Selecting a yacht that most closely meets all of your objectives, including size, style, itinerary, dates, price, crew and so on means opening up about all of your requirements, wants and needs. Share with your broker the activities you enjoy, your hobbies, your favorite locations or bucket-list destinations, your cuisine and beverages of choice — including any and all dietary requirements, such as allergies, diabetes, etc. — or special occasions that should be celebrated. It’s also good to have a chat with the captain and chef prior to boarding to ensure everyone is on the same page. Then relax and prepare for the most incredible holiday of your life.” Ann Landry Charter Broker, Fort Lauderdale

SPOTLIGHT S H AW N L A I R D Northrop & Johnson is a full-service yacht brokerage house, offering everything from sales and charter to crew placement and charter management. Our exceptionally knowledgeable and skilled charter management division offers clients bespoke management programs perfectly tailored for their superyachts. With charter managers located in our Fort Lauderdale, South of France and Asia offices, Northrop & Johnson is able to provide top-quality service around the globe. Charter Management Director Shawn Laird opens up about her position at Northrop & Johnson, the charter market and charter management trends, and she shares advice on entering the charter market.

Q What is your background within the yachting industry and how did you come to be a charter manager? A I’ve worked in the yachting industry since 1996 when I started my career as a chief stewardess on large motor yachts, which lasted five amazing years. Fortunately, I was able to make a smooth transition from sea to land when I moved ashore to work at Bob Saxon Associates in Fort Lauderdale. Three years later, I was recruited by another yachting firm to assist in the charter management division — that’s where I learned the ropes. I have been a charter manager for 14 years now, and I’m still going strong.

01 Shawn Laird Charter Management Director, Fort Lauderdale office

What is your best advice to a new charter yacht owner? The best advice I can give to any owner new to the charter market is to invest in a sophisticated marketing portfolio, with regard to everything from employing the best crew to excellent photography. Owners need to give their marketing campaigns one-hundred percent. It’s all about building and continuing to rebuild the brand on a global level. It goes without saying that our charter management division is committed to making all of our fleet yachts famous — my fellow charter managers and I are obsessed with it, quite frankly.

N A V I G A T O R S P O T L I G H T

What is the most important facet to a successful charter yacht? The most important facet to a successful charter yacht is the crew — it’s that simple. They can either “make it” or “break it” for owners. All crew must be passionate about their jobs and charters and willing to do whatever it takes. They also must be happy and have a positive attitude. Additionally, having a flexible owner on all fronts is critical, as it all starts at the top. Owners who relinquish the yacht for a charter (especially during peak times) and are generous to repeat business by offering special rates and/or extra nights definitely have an edge. Once you add flexibility to the equation, it all organically comes together to form a seamless, successful charter operation. The yacht is the first thing the client notices, but it’s the crew who make a lasting impression.

What, in your opinion, are the biggest trends happening in the charter market? The competition is really tough right now and, in order to stay in the race, having your yacht equipped with the best, latest and greatest amenities is key. Zero Speed stabilizers, high-speed Internet, towable tenders and a massive water toy inventory all rank high on the must-have list.

What is the best part of your job as a charter manager with N&J? The best part of my job as charter manager is the constant “buzz,” which never stops. It’s a highly energetic (to say the least) career and industry, and I thrive on it. I compare our charter management to the “nerve center.” There is always something going on. There’s just no other business out there like charter management.

What makes N&J stand out among other charter management companies? Northrop & Johnson charter managers, including myself, Amy Wachman (N&J Fort Lauderdale), Fiona Maureso, Andrea Pothier (N&J South of France) and Lies Sol (N&J Asia), are positioned as experts at the top of our field. We constantly have our pulse on the market and our competition; we always take great initiative to keep up with industry trends. We take great pride offering personal service to our fleet owners and captains. The reason we can offer bespoke, personalized service is because we prefer not to “supersize” our exclusive fleet. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. We have devoted a huge part of our lives to this industry and remain extremely passionate and tenacious on every level. Our clients could not be in better hands than with Northrop & Johnson charter management.

Where, in your opinion, do you see the charter market going in the next five years? Over the last few years, I have seen an uptick in the market — not a fast one, but a nice, steady incline — and I see this continuing for many years to come. It is a good sign when you are booking charters almost a year in advance — what a sigh of relief for the industry!

What are your five must-have features on a yacht? 1 – Massive sundeck for entertaining, along with plenty of lounge areas for sun 2 – Tricked-out towable tender in the 30-to-35-foot range 3 – Cinema 4 – Gym 5 – Beach club Where is your dream charter location? I’ve always been obsessed with the South Pacific, namely Bora Bora — it’s on my bucket list

Invoking images of a summer spent in the South of France, Seasalt and Pepper is the brainchild of owner Carlos Miranda, and now the home base for the epicurean prodigy Chef Alfredo Alvarez, best known for his celebrated Coral Gables Giacosa. Seasalt and Pepper aims to redefine the concept of “riverside dining” (01) one plate at a time. “Once you have visited Seasalt and Pepper on the banks of the Miami River with visions of the downtown skyline and breathtaking sunsets, you’ll understand why we selected this special location,” says Miranda. He has realized his vision: An upscale brasserie with riverside dining, exquisite cuisine and a great atmosphere where boaters, yachtsman, locals and international meet, mingle and enjoy.

04

Superyachts are sure to flock to this stylish new restaurant, which boasts “serious culinary swagger,” focused on simplistically restyled classics, such as surf and turf, with a Mediterranean twist. The name Seasalt and Pepper comes from the fundamental ingredients of Mediterranean cooking. And with 36 years in the business, Chef Alvarez certainly has the culinary chops to create enticing plates. A long-time customer of Alvarez’s Coral Gables and New York restaurants, when Miranda approached Alvarez about teaming up, they conjured up the dream of a South of France-style restaurant based in the heart of Miami. “I wanted to go back to the roots of cooking — the way it was done in the old country,” says Alvarez. He uses a brick oven to cook his prized seafood casserole (03), which is prepared in a Balkan clay dish. This rustic style of preparation combined with the high-end, often-imported ingredients creates impeccable dishes that must be tasted to be believed. Upon arrival at Seasalt and Pepper, a dockmaster will facilitate docking. If you are unable to bring the vessel to the restaurant, “We also offer pick up and drop off for patrons,” says Miranda. Catering to the yachting community (04) was one of the key reasons for the location choice. “Unfortunately, in Miami we are surrounded by water, but there are few places to actually go by boat or yacht to have lunch or dinner,” says 06 Miranda. Seasalt and Pepper also will serve you on board while docked at the restaurant.

Along with the beachy chic vibe (05) of the outdoor dining deck (02) and the haute sophistication of the indoor seating area, you can enjoy an array of cocktails (06) or peruse the impeccable wine list at two of the fully stocked bars on property. A raw bar with fresh seafood also is on offer. And when you dine at Seasalt and Pepper, Alverez recommends his masterpiece, the seafood casserole, but any of the fresh, simple, yet exceptionally flavorful menu items will leave you with a fabulous Mediterranean-inspired taste in your mouth

02 Interior designer Jeff Howard crafted a stunning interior, which offers guests a variety of impeccably designed spaces to enjoy

N A V I G A T O R I N S I D E / O U T

The magnificent motor yacht COCKTAILS was
originally launched from Trinity Yachts as JANIE in 2004. She was destined to return home seven years later, in 2011, to embark on an extensive refit with a brave new vision in mind. COCKTAILS re-emerged nine months later — in early 2012 — with an impressive, stylish look, completely upgraded systems and an improved layout, solidifying her as an unparalleled charter option among the latest motor yachts. The striking use of rich, dark-wood flooring, cappuccino onyx and beautiful white-leather paneling gives COCKTAILS a progressive and contemporary feel. The clever placement of deco accessories and paintings fills you with curiosity to see what lies around the next corner. Prior to purchasing COCKTAILS — which was named CHEVY TOY at the time — the owner already had big plans for her transformation. Once the yacht was opened up, and the old interior was removed, it was easy to see her full potential. Howard Dearmas Group of Miami, Florida, led the design and remodeling of the yacht with continuous guidance and direction from her new owner.
Entering the main salon through the aft doors, COCKTAILS features an expansive main deck that stretches forward, offering guests uninterrupted space, basked in natural light. Leaping out in the distance at the forward end of the room and gracing the custom-made, fractured class dining room table is a bespoke Britto painting, mounted to an elegant wall of beveled mirrors — this truly unique touch tops off a very impressive transformation.
COCKTAILS is capable of accommodating 12 guests, between the on-deck master, three king-size suites and one beautifully finished twin room, which also can be opened up with the adjoining king cabin, to create a large VIP suite.
The master stateroom features a handsome dual bathroom with a freestanding tub set in front of a large, elongated window that drenches the room in sunlight. The entire bathroom was completely gutted and extended to clear the way for this luxury penthouse feel.

2 7

The skylounge is an elegantly casual, social space — traces of the main salon have migrated here. The spectacular oversized windows with raised arches allow for unobstructed views, and the recessed ceiling coffers set the mood with a clever use of accent lighting, creating a much more relaxed and low-key environment with a games table, state-of-the-art entertainment system and fully equipped bar. It is the alluring sundeck, however, where guests are likely to spend much of their time. This area showcases the greatest transformation from the old layout. Relocating the crane from the center of the deck to the port side was essential in adding more usable space and freeing up this area for guest use. Now, COCKTAILS has similar exterior deck space to that of a much larger yacht. Other changes include the addition of two half-moon shaped bars, the repositioning of the Jacuzzi further aft to add more sun pad area around the forward edge and a relaxed seating area under the arch, as a finishing touch. The effect is astonishing and the same luxurious finishes, as found in the interior, surround guests.
Below decks, COCKTAILS is powered by two caterpillar 3512 engines situated in a spacious, walk-around chrome-plated engine room. She can run at 22 knots or cruise comfortably at 19. At 154 feet, drawing 6.8 feet, COCKTAILS offers both comfortable speed and power. She also is outfitted with a bevy of tenders and toys to keep everyone on board busy. COCKTAILS is mothership to a 35-foot Intrepid and 18-foot Novurania and her onboard toy chest is kitted out with two Yamaha WaveRunners, wakeboards, waterskis, inflatable towables and fishing and snorkeling gear.

From sundeck to keel, COCKTAILS has personality and style in spades. She’s easy to fall in love with and every guest will disembark with a smile, because there are few finer things in life than sharing COCKTAILS with friends

THE STRIKING USE OF RICH, DARK-WOOD FLOORING, CAPPUCCINO ONYX & BEAUTIFUL WHITE-LEATHER PANELING GIVES COCKTAILS A PROGRESSIVE & CONTEMPORARY FEEL

OW N E R’ S S U I T E JIM GLIDEWELL WORDS JANINE KETTERER

A true yachtsman at heart, Jim Glidewell has owned many vessels, but the headturning M/Y SERENGETI has a special place in his heart. Glidewell’s 130-foot Westport, built in 2002 was previously called MARY ALICE II, but she was originally named SERENGETI by a Hollywood legend. In homage to her original owner, when Glidewell purchased the yacht, he reverted the name to SERENGETI , but also because “it’s bad luck to change the name of a boat,” he proclaims.

But let’s start at the beginning. In 1987, Glidewell purchased his first vessel, a 50-foot boat, which grew into a 63-foot Sea Ray, which lead him to an 84-foot Sunseeker. He then purchased a 95-foot Heesen dubbed VOYAGER. The next yacht was a 120-foot Broward called SOVEREIGN and from there, a 122-foot Flagship named SHOGUN. The culmination was a 154-foot Admiral named OHANA. The Glidewell family loved OHANA, but because his children were so young, the vessel did not receive as much use as she deserved and she was destined for a sale.

Now, Glidewell proudly owns M/Y SERENGETI , which lives on the west coast of the Americas, chartering the Pacific from Mexico to Alaska. While SERENGETI is on the seas, Glidewell also owns a “back up” yacht in Newport Beach, an 82-foot Hatteras sportfish. The 69-year-old yachtsman has lived on the West Coast his whole life. Glidewell was born in Las Vegas, moved to California for college and never looked back. Now living in Newport Beach with his wife and four children, Glidewell gets quite a bit of use out of SERENGETI.

“I mainly have boats for the kids,” says Glidewell. “It’s exciting sharing different ports of call with them.” His children range in age from four to 10. From June to September, SERENGETI is based in Juneau, Alaska, where she charters if the Glidewell’s aren’t on board. From October to May, the vessel lives in Newport Beach, California, occasionally heading south to La Paz or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. “I love the balance of the Westport,” says Glidewell. “All of the systems work perfectly. We can run at 29 knots and cruise comfortably at 22. There are five staterooms, which work well for my family and, since I have an office in Newport, we use the vessel for company events. We have cocktail parties on board, and we’ve even taken her out to Catalina for weekends.” A native to the area, Glidewell favors the U.S. and Mexican west coast. “I’ve been a pilot for 30 years and I used to fly to the west coast of Mexico often and stay in hotels, but now I can fly in and stay on my yacht, which I much prefer.” Other favorite yachting hubs for Glidewell are Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. He also loves The Bahamas, “I like it there better than the Caribbean islands.” Glidewell hasn’t spent time on board yachts in the Mediterranean, but he has traversed the Panama Canal on board three times.

One of his favorite yachting memories happened on M/Y SERENGETI quite recently. Glidewell brought the yacht and 20 guests to The Bahamas to attend the ShowBoats International Boys & Girls Clubs Rendezvous at the Atlantis resort. After the event, they cruised to the Exumas, in The Bahamas, for a double hook-up with Glidewell’s east-coast-based yacht M/Y OHANA. As many yachts only can host up to 12 guests, the double hook-up worked well for Glidewell, and “the critical mass of 20 people made the whole trip more enjoyable,” he says.

02 The alfresco dining space on the aft deck of M/Y SERENGETI is perfect for a twilight meal while anchored out

When it’s just the family on board, one of Glidewell’s favorite pastimes is fishing with his children. “Most people say they fish,” he laughs, “we catch.” Captain Mike Finnegan has been with Glidewell for five years, previously working as captain of SHOGUN, and he is an avid fisherman.”We catch everything from dungeness crab to salmon, halibut, cod, and what we catch goes on the menu,” Glidewell smiles

Even with constant maintenance, every yacht eventually will need a refit. Oftentimes, yacht refits are viewed as a painful and stressful experience for owner, captain, crew and sometimes the yard. But not all captains and yards are willing adhere to the age-old, traditional refit plan of “we’ll sort it out when we get there.” Rybovich Marina and Refit Yard has a full-proof refit program to ensure a seamless yard period and that’s precisely why seasoned, skilled and informed captain Stephen Edwards of S/Y FELICITA WEST brought his vessel to West Palm Beach, Florida, for a full-service refit. One of the most detrimental mistakes during a refit, according to Edwards, is lack of planning. With a strong background in engineering and project management, Edwards knows what he’s talking about. FELICITA WEST, the stunning 64-meter Perini Navi built in 2003, was due for an extensive refit. Her rigging was 18 months overdue and the paint was in need of an update. Along with these assignments, the vessel also needed new monitoring and exhaust systems, an overhaul of the air conditioning and more. With a limited amount of time, Edwards chose a yard that would make good on their negotiated time and price. Rybovich’s Vice President of Business Development 01

Francois van Well for Rybovich breaks down its alternative and exceptional style. “Refits aren’t just something you can do without planning. You can’t take the boat out of the water and see what happens. But traditionally, that’s how a lot of refits have been done. By sheer numbers, we need to be able to schedule, allocate resources properly and so on. We have project managers for each individual refit,” he explains. As far as planning goes, “I inherited, to some extent, a certain amount of this work scoped out,” says Edwards. “My predecessor had done quite a lot of reconnaissance during the last couple of years. When I came on to this project, I looked at the outline and went into detail with Rybovich as to specific dates and prices.” When undergoing a refit at Rybovich, “The captain and owner put in the initial request, then we then give our interpretation,” explains van Well. “Then we run through it together. The captain and owner air concerns, and then we have a dialogue to adjust the expectations and re-quote. When you plan it well in advance, you can spend time working out all of those details before heading into the yard.” Edwards also chose Rybovich because of its relationship with various outside contractors. “I have a very good

A N A T O M Y

02

working relationship with Tony Hawk of SeaHawke Rigging. As a sailboat captain, you must trust the person putting rigging together,” says Edwards. Rybovich prides itself not only on its employees, but also the outside vendors it chooses. “We have preferred contractors for pricing and insurance reasons — we need to be able to trust that they can do the work in the allotted time frame,” explains van Well. Once the details have been finalized and the work has begun, even the most well-prepared captain, project manager and refit yard can stumble across unforeseen obstacles. “You always could run across challenges that you discover only in the dry-dock phase,” says Edwards. “But there’s nothing you can do about that until you get under the boat to poke and prod.” Rybovich has a structure in place for dealing with newly discovered concerns. “At the beginning of a project, we look at the requested scope,” van Well clarifies. “We first set the must-do list, then the ‘would-be-nice’ list. Then there is what we call discovery, like mold or corrosion — things you would only discover after opening up the vessel. We have to budget into our schedule a percentage of growth. If something really big comes up, we discuss it as a team and we speak with the owner and captain. The benefit of a highly talented in-house team in all disciplines means we can

N A V I G A T O R O F A R E F I T

3 9

03

assess the situation and come up with alternative solutions.” When it comes down to it, refits are all about understanding more than just the scope, but also the smallest details, says van Well. “Our project management system is set up so the managers really run the projects. The traditional mindset is that when you go to the yard, it’s going to be stressful and the captain can’t leave the boat for a minute. He has to be in charge of the project, all of the subcontractors, all of his own crew — that’s the old model. Now, the vessel arrives, the contract already has been signed, we go over it for two or three days then the captain can take his holiday and leave the yacht in the hands of the project manager, first mate or engineer. The captain will receive updates, with schedules, invoices, etc. so he can track it off site. This allows senior crew to take downtime when the vessel is in the yard.” While Edwards stayed on during the entire refit of FELICITA WEST, he worked hand-in-hand with project manager Chris Wright to ensure that the refit was seamless from drydock to mast maintenance and beyond. There is so much that can go wrong during a refit, from bloated bottom lines to unfinished work, but both van Well and Edwards agree that understanding and planning are the keystones to the anatomy of a perfect refit. “Plan. Plan, plan, plan and plan again,” says Edwards “Do the homework before you go, because if you go in without a plan, you’re doomed from the start”

C U LT U R E S P Y DAN HOLDSWORTH British photographer Dan Holdsworth sees a different world through the lens of his camera. With his photographs, Holdsworth draws the viewer in and changes their perspectives as well. “His latest work, ‘Transmission: New Remote Earth Views’ appropriates topographical data to document the ideologically and politically loaded spaces of the American West in an entirely new way,” says Emma Lewis, art critic and writer.

Holdsworth utilizes images of the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Mount Shasta, Salt Lake City and Mount St. Helens from a vantage point unlike any before. The stark terrain presented offers meaning through absence. “What at first appear to be pure-white snow-capped mountains or perhaps the surface of the moon are, in fact, digitally rendered laser scans of the earth appropriated from U.S. Geological Survey data. These ‘Terrain models’ are used to measure climate and land change – to measure the earth and man’s affect upon it. Stripped of surface detail, there are no signifiers of natural wilderness or picturesque aesthetic, no invoking of the Romantic Sublime,” Lewis writes.

Holdsworth’s photos encourage the viewer to transcend their preconceived visions of these locations and look at them through perhaps otherworldly eyes. Holdsworth’s work is featured in numerous international collections, including Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; The UBS Collection, Zurich and London; Saatchi Collection, London www.danholdsworth.com

Known as the Spice Island, the best buys in Grenada are the spices, especially nutmeg, locally made jams, jellies and syrups. Along with batik and locally made handicrafts, Grenada invites you to take a piece of the islands culture home. The vast array of local spices mean Grenada is a gastronomic playground. Creole cuisine blends with classic West Indian flavors to create Grenada’s local specialities, while world-class restaurants cater to international appetites, providing classic French and Italian dishes. Fresh seafood in Grenada is a must-eat delight. Olidown is the national dish created from salted meat, onion, carrot, celery, breadfruit and dasheen stew with dumplings cooked in coconut milk — be sure to taste some while visiting. And where to stay on this idyllic island? Port Louis Marina currently operates 170 fully serviced berths for yachts of all sizes, including superyachts of 90 meters with six-foot draft. Annual or seasonal rental and short-term visitor stays also are available. There is a wide array of services available at Port Louis Marina, from diving and hiking, to yacht care. There also are some small shops on site for quick provisioning. WHAT’S HOT IN THE ART WORLD TODAY? ART IS CULTURE & CULTURE IS ART & TODAY’S CULTURE IS FOCUSED ON THE POP & POST-POP EXPLOSION WORDS JULIE KEYES

When purchasing or collecting art, it can be exceptionally difficult to decide which pieces are best for you. Of course, it is imperative that you love the artwork in order to purchase it, but also it should be chic, work well in your home or yacht, be thought provoking and fashionable. What’s hot this year? Pop and post-pop is in. Pop art is defined as using the ordinary “pop culture” to create art, hence “pop art.” When you hear this term, the mind conjures famed pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Liechtenstein, and Larry Rivers, to name a few. These artists are hailed as the forefathers and trailblazers of the pop art movement. They are now the blue-chip artists in the auctions of the art world. A new genre of pop art has emerged over the last few years — post-pop is the new, modern movement that is now taking shape before our very eyes. The artist and movement itself have not yet completely formed — there’s no Wikipedia page for the post-pop art movement because it’s happening now. Over the last 30 years, the innovators of pop art and the post-pop movement have been in their studios, painting, sculpting and creating. Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Richard Prince are taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. The objects, drawings, paintings and photos are taken from the world around us and trigger memories that make art into more than a piece to display, but a memoir of one’s

life. One of Warhol’s iconic pieces, a Campbell’s soup can, allegedly was inspirited by the fact that Warhol ate the soup every day, as at least one meal. Pop art and post-pop art will be prominently on display this year at Art Basel Miami Beach. The first weekend in December the art world descends upon this hot, haute metropolis known for its chic yachts and international sexy appeal. Born in and of modern art, Art Basel is the place for artists, art lovers, art collectors and those who want to be surrounded by beauty and champagne to mix, mingle and become inspired. As the mecca of the American art world, new art trends will be unveiled here and either soar to roaring fame or meet their demise. At Art basal, you will find both horror and beauty of the modern art world among the pop and post-pop art displayed. On tap for your viewing pleasure this year are pop art and post-pop masters Damien Hirst, Mel Ramos and Richard Prince. Keep an eye out for their stunning works of art.

Now that the human race has finally woken up to the fact that we’re spoiling our planet and the future of our children by stubbornly relying on fossil fuels to propel our “personal transport systems,” the subject of alternative power sources has arrived high on the agenda. Hydrogen, compressed air, bio-diesel and, of course, pure electric power have all been tried with greater or lesser success — and, in all likelihood, it will be the latter that comes through as the cleanest, most efficient, most economical and most practical way of running the cars of the future.

Right now, however, there’s really only one way to go if you want performance, economy, low emissions and unlimited distance capability — and that’s the hybrid route. Cars that combine “optimized” petrol or diesel engines with the assistance of one or more electric motors are moving on apace, especially in the luxury sector, where experience gained through work on systems such as Formula One’s KERS (kinetic energy recovery) is being put to practical use in some truly exciting vehicles.

01 McLaren P1 Launched at the 2013 Geneva motor show, McLaren’s P1 is limited to an edition of 375 cars. It features a 727-horsepower, 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine matched with a KERS electric motor, producing a further 176 horsepower — sufficient to provide a top speed of 239 mph, which, on customer versions, is electronically limited to 217 mph. The specially developed electric motor (which McLaren calls IPAS, Instant Power Assist System) helps the P1 to accelerate from standstill to 180 mph in less than 17 seconds and enables it to travel for up to 20 km at slow speeds in emission-free, full-electric mode. McLaren’s new flagship costs around $1.5 million. 02 Mercedes-Benz S500 Mercedes has chosen its uber-luxury S-class body style to launch its first plug-in hybrid, which starts at around $135,000 and combines a three-liter, V6 petrol engine with an 85-kilowatt electric motor to provide a combined power output of 442 horsepower and a top speed of 155 mph. The car is capable of travelling more than 100 miles on a gallon of fuel and up to 20 miles in emission-free, pure-electric mode. And, to entice potential buyers fearful of hybrid technology, Mercedes has introduced a six-year, 60,000-mile warranty on the system, which automatically selects the optimum combination of petrol/electric power to suit the prevailing driving conditions. There is even a so-called “haptic” accelerator pedal, which signals when the driver should lift off the gas — all for less than $150,000.

02

03 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV The arrival of the Outlander PHEV has provided Mitsubishi with an unprecedented sales boost worldwide. Said to be the most efficient hybrid SUV on the market, it was the first plug-in in its class and is capable of travelling up to 37 miles in all-electric mode — making it extremely practical for short, stop-start journeys. In long distance driving, it returns around 44 mpg, with a potential 130 mpg possible with thoughtful use of the hybrid system. Initial production problems have prevented the car’s arrival in the U.S, but sales are due to begin early 2015; the PHEV is priced around $45,000 and it’s worth the wait. 03

04 Ferrari La Ferrari Ferrari’s take on the hybrid supercar is La Ferrari or, its official project number, the F150. It combines a 6.3-liter, V12 engine, producing almost 780 horsepower, with a KERS unit comprising two electric motors — one at the front and one at the rear — to provide an additional 160 horsepower for use in short bursts. The F150 is capable of hitting 60 mph from zero in less than three seconds and runs up to 220 mph, necessitating a set of aero brakes to back up the huge, conventional ones. Despite its ‘hybrid’ nature, however, La Ferrari is no planetfriendly supercar — it won’t run on electricity alone, and you’ll struggle to better 15 mpg. But that hasn’t prevented all 499 from being pre-sold at $1.7 million each. 05 Porsche 918 Spyder Porsche’s beautifully built hybrid follows its already successful Cayenne SUV, which is now available in both petrol/ electric and plug-in hybrid forms — the latter having an all-electric range of up to 22 miles. The 918 Spyder, however, is an out-and-out sports car combining a 608-horsepower, 4.6-liter, V8 engine with twin electric motors, which add the equivalent of a further 279 horsepower. A “plug-in” (meaning the batteries are fully recharged from the mains, but recover some energy from the petrol engine and brakes while driving) Spyder can be driven for up to 12 miles using electric power only. But more impressive is the huge amount of extra torque and grip, which the electric motors contribute to the powertain, helping it to a top speed of 214 mph. It costs around $1 million

Enjoy breakfast and lunch with your toes in the sand at the Sand Bar, positioned directly on the beach in front of the crystal-clear waters. For dinner, see and be seen at the most glamorous spot, On the Rocks, where the Executive Chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten will delight your taste buds with his personally inspired menu. Brunch @ Nikki Beach, Baie de St Jean Arrive in time for brunch at St. Bart’s most popular daytime restaurant and beach club, Nikki Beach. Enjoy early afternoon cocktails and sample creative sushi rolls while watching the ultra-glamorous swim and dance. A true Nikki Beach experience is the famous resort-wear fashion show when restaurant aisles become the runway. The setting is relaxed and the atmosphere chic. Nikki Beach offers guests that touch of Ibiza-cool in the Caribbean.

GRAND CUL-DE-SAC IS THE MOST POPULAR BEACH FOR BOTH KITE & WINDSURFERS BECAUSE OF ITS GLASS-LIKE TURQUOISE WATERS

04 Home of Hotel Guanahani & Spa, Grand Cul-de-Sac also is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and sun worshipers

Water sports @ Grand Cul-de-Sac If you’re keen for adventurous water sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing, be sure to spend a day at Grand Culde-Sac, located on the east side of the island. This beach borders a shallow, well-protected bay and the sea is relatively calm and warm – no need for a wetsuit. Grand Cul-de-Sac is the most popular beach for both kite and windsurfers because of its glass-like turquoise waters. Several restaurants and hotels sit on this beach, as well as a windsurfing rental station. Sunbathe @ Colombier Beach Commonly known as Rockefeller’s Beach, Colombier Beach and the property surrounding it was owned by David Rockerfeller for many years. Easily one of the best St. Bart’s beaches, Colombier Beach is well known for its pristine seclusion, but it is a popular Sunday spot for locals. The waters of Colombier Beach usually are calm, clear and warm — the perfect conditions for snorkeling. As there are no services or ammenities at Colombier, many visitors bring their own food and beverages to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Colombier Beach is accessible via a 30-minute walk from the harbor or by tender. Relax @ Hotel Guanahani & Spa A private 16-acre peninsula is home to the largest resort on St. Bart’s, Hotel Guanahani. Nestled within the hotel’s exquisite tropical gardens, you’ll find the spa overflowing in luxury. Inspired by Creole architechture, the resort pops with bright, fresh colors offering a lively, but relaxed feel. Products from the prestigious, esteemed Clarins line are used here, as highly trained therapists perform an array of face and body treatments, including hair removal and hair styling using Frederic Fekkai products. For the ultimate in relaxation, indulge in one of the multiple day spa packages.

Lunch @ La Case de l’Isle You are rewarded with an exquisite view at La Case de l’Isle nestled within the Hotel Saint-Barth Isle de France, which overlooks the gorgeous Flamands beach. If alfresco dining is on your menu, you may wish to dine at La Cabane de l’Isle, which sits directly on the beach. Allow the sand to tickle your toes as you sit at your table in this sought-after spot to enjoy a culinary delight prepared by the Executive chef, Chef Yann Vinsot, and his team. Here clean, light and traditionally French is the theme to all dishes. Dinner @ L’isola An Italian gem on this French-Caribbean Island, L’isola is arguably one of the best restaurants in St. Bart’s. Dark wooden floors and white linens are lit by glowing candlelight, which provides the perfect setting for a romantic dinner in this chic and sophisticated dining environment. Enjoy favorites such as a veal chop with sage butter or risotto with wild boar. Sunset @ Shell Beach Only a short walk from Gustavia, take a front row seat at Do Brazil, a casual restaurant hangout on Shell Beach, and soak up the last of the sun’s rays before it blends into the horizon. The beautiful sunsets of St. Bart’s shouldn’t be missed, nor should the incredible cocktails served at Do Brazil. There are few better ways to end the day in St. Bart’s.

06

Party @ Le Ti Le Ti St. Bart’s , or Le Ti — as the “in crowd” knows it — is a venue where impressive restaurant meets chic cabaret. With ornate décor, featuring a great deal of red velvet and feathered chandeliers, this restaurant offers hot action after midnight. Masquerade-masked showgirls dressed in fetishinspired costumes dance on top of the dinner tables… and so will you. The crowd parties late into the wee hours to the tunes of the resident DJ spinning top Euro hits. Shop @ Gustavia The capital of St. Bart’s, Gustavia, is home to Port de Gustavia, considered the world over as one of the most exclusive marinas to berth a superyacht. Here luxe and lavishness abound as you spend a full day exploring the winding streets, getting your dose of retail therapy. Above the narrow cobblestone roads sit a plethora of new and classic high-end designers such as Roberto Cavalli , Rolex, and Hermès, to name a few. One of the perks of shopping in Gustavia: Tax-free purchasing
