Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows opens with an iconic scene of Mole catching a whiff of spring and emerging from his burrow to find Ratty at the riverbank with a little blue boat. Ratty asserts that being in a boat is the best possible thing. “There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” It was true in 1908, and it remains true today. After two years of pandemic-induced travel-fasting, the appetite for adventure has reached voracious levels on a global scale. Yachts across our charter fleet are in high demand, and sales of both new and brokerage yachts continue to soar. Prices are ticking higher this year for multiple reasons, but thus far, it has shown no sign of impacting the urgency to get back on the water – because Ratty was right. To keep our clients’ yacht ownership and chartering experiences at a world-class level, Northrop & Johnson continues to expand our offices and services. We have a new office opening at the Rybovich Shipyard in Palm Beach, Florida. Our existing office at LMC in Fort Lauderdale is expanding, as is our presence in Antibes. We are also pleased to announce that we have acquired SYM Yacht Management. By bringing yacht management services inhouse, our clients benefit with the peace of mind of knowing a specialized and reliable thirdparty team is monitoring and administrating the daily operations, so you can relax and enjoy hassle-free ownership. In this issue of Navigator, we explore the very best curated experiences. We talk to the pros to find the superlative products and most memorable destinations to help you chart your course for memorable diversions around the world. In the pages ahead we get the inside scoop on adventure yachting from EYOS. In Toy Box, we look at the Lift3 F and Blu3 Nomad to get your adrenaline flowing. We marvel at the eye-popping auction scene for cars, watches, and art. And from the Flight Deck, we consider the best way to arrive to your yacht in style. Whether it’s the top suite in the Caribbean, the best fly-fishing destination in the world, or the “it” anchorage this season, you can be sure that you’ll read it first from Northrop & Johnson. From bespoke itineraries to experiencing an epic destination like a local, curated travel experiences are inevitably big on imagination and emotion. Navigator talks to EYOS Expeditions about crafting adventures and discovering parts of the planet that few others have experienced.

Ben Lyons Chief Executive Officer, EYOS Ben Lyons has spent his entire life captivated by ships and travel. As a captain, travel writer, MBA and EYOS Chief Executive Officer, Ben’s unique set of skills allows him to mix his passion for travel and work.

“Unique experiences should be as much a part of the charter lifestyle as five-star chefs and the latest water toys,” says Sacha Williams, Northrop & Johnson’s Global Charter Marketing Director. “Clients who have spent their summers discovering the Mediterranean or winters in the Caribbean are looking to do something new.”

Rob McCallum Founding Partner, Expedition Leader, EYOS Having guided a complete circumnavigation of Antarctica by icebreaker and undertaken extensive deep ocean exploration, EYOS Founding Partner Rob McCallum puts his diverse background to use as an expedition leader.

Fortunately, yachts are responding with rare-experience options as their owners choose to venture further afield, and with the growing capabilities of explorer yachts, the barrier to some of the world’s most remote and challenging cruising grounds has been lifted. “From the tropical band, through the temperate zones all the way to the polar regions, we can recommend an adventure for the most intrepid of explorers and to those new to exploration yachting,” says Rob McCallum, EYOS’ Founding Partner and Expedition Leader. “Every voyage is completely customized to the client’s comfort level and can vary from relatively easy to something with more challenge.”

Sacha Williams Global Charter Marketing Director, Northrop & Johnson With an impressive background in yachting, Sacha has worked extensively with clients and owners to ensure the best possible experience for all. Using her in-depth knowledge of the charter yacht fleet and appetite for adventure, Sacha aims to enrich her clients experience on board by discovering destinations in new ways.

“Many of the world’s more remote cruising areas require specialist knowledge from guides or pilots, as well as local contacts to help obtain permits,” says Sacha. “We work closely with EYOS Expeditions, who in turn work with our yacht captains, owners and charter clients to maximize their experience in some of the most isolated and pristine regions of the world.” EYOS pride themselves in providing the expertise, understanding and logistical support that charter brokers, captains and clients wouldn’t otherwise have, while elevating the charter or owner experience to the next level. “We are also there to ensure safety in remote regions, while at the same time ensuring that proper environmental and wilderness protocols are observed,” says Ben Lyons, EYOS’ Chief Executive Officer.

for over twenty years; the first person to go down to the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean sits on our Advisory Board; and one of our guides in Papua New Guinea is a local chief who has helped facilitate some amazing experiences shared with the local community.” One-of-a-kind is a term often used when talking about superyachts, but working with EYOS brings an elevated dimension. “We strive for authenticity in every experience we offer, and we aim to design the perfect blend between a client’s interests and a destination’s offering,” says Rob. “Clients get to meet the real people and see behind the cultural screen. They will see the conditions that shaped these regions, experience the sights, sounds, smells and tastes…the real essence of the place.”

Finding genuinely extraordinary experiences that go beyond the day-to-day takes vision, courage and experience. “EYOS is fortunate in that our team has been in the industry for decades, and we have developed an incredible network over the years,” says Ben. “Our knowledge of some of the world’s most isolated areas and the people that live and work there is not just superficial; it is deep, heartfelt and genuine.” Such longstanding relationships have resulted in EYOS being able to open doors to areas that are not usually accessible. “Our unblemished track record gives people surety that we treasure and respect the special places in which we are privileged to operate,” says Rob. And then there are the unique contacts with whom EYOS have teamed up with over the years. “We have worked with the premier whale photographer in the world for National Geographic

But where to go if you are dipping your toe into adventure yachting? According to Rob, Svalbard is a great option for a first Arctic trip, and Ben agrees. “There are regular flights there, and you can be out searching for polar bears shortly after landing,” says Ben. “Few wildlife encounters can match the thrill of seeing a polar bear walk across the ice towards your yacht.” Meanwhile, the Antarctic Peninsula is EYOS’ most popular Antarctic option. “If folks want to step it up, then an expedition to the Ross Sea in deep Antarctica can earn some bragging rights,” says Rob. “You can’t help but come away from Antarctica inspired,” adds Ben. “In the tropics, the easier trips are to Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands for the keen divers, and Papua New Guinea for those who want to experience unique cultures; it’s an anthropological Mecca.”

EYOS takes time to work with the entire team, including the charter broker, the yacht captain and the owner or lead charterer themselves to gain a better understanding of the client’s motivations. “Developing an expedition involves listening to the client – asking what they are hoping to get out of the trip, understanding who their guests are going to be, and truly understanding the capabilities of their vessel,” says Tamsin Vaughan, Client Director at EYOS. “From there, our team will work with all parties involved to put together a program that suits their needs. And most importantly, our expedition leaders are experts at being able to adjust the program at any given moment – they are adept at recognizing what the client is reacting to and taking advantage of opportunities as they arise. Nothing can be too rigid.” Ben agrees. “The key to a successful expedition is spontaneity,” he explains. “An experienced guide, who can not only look at the weather and plan to be in the right place at the right time, but also recognize when a situation has the potential to become extraordinary, can literally make or break an expedition.” Clients may not initially understand that every day will not follow a rigid schedule, but this can lead to the best opportunities. “It may mean completely abandoning the day’s landing in order to follow orcas for several hours,” he says. “We can help curate and shape the experience of guests, making judgment calls along the way to create the optimal experience.”

Often clients will have unbelievable imaginations and bring some really fun ideas to the table that EYOS has successfully facilitated. Such experiences can range from helping clients achieve world records to discovering previously inaccessible locations. Most recently, EYOS helped facilitate a client’s desire to reach the deepest point of each of the world’s five oceans. From sunset cocktails on the rim of an erupting volcano to champagne at a luxury camp at the South Pole, these really are once-in-a-lifetime experiences. “The requests can be varied,” explains Ben. “We have developed itineraries around the fur trade of Alaska and helped clients realize their dream of diving in Antarctica with National Geographic photographers. But we are also realistic. There are some areas, some topics, where we are not the true experts, and in those cases, we are candid with the clients, and we work with our local partners that are better equipped than we are.” Some might question how responsible it is to be traveling to previously undiscovered areas, especially given the constant news about climate change and the devastating effects this is having on the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps. This is something

that EYOS are extremely passionate about. “We are fortunate to have been able to introduce many of the world’s opinion leaders and decision makers to some of the world’s more critical challenges, the most notable being climate change,” says Rob. “Profound moments such as sitting on a hilltop overlooking a glacier have led to some major political shifts. These collective moments become a legacy that I am very proud of.” The destinations cannot help but have an impact on those fortunate enough to experience them, changing them in a deep and profound manner. “It may sound far-fetched, but it is true – these regions have that kind of effect,” says Ben. Aside from introducing clients to all that the world has to offer while paying attention to the devastating effects of climate change, EYOS belongs to industry organizations such as The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) and The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), which help shape the policies toward sustainable visitation to the polar region, and support both organizations and their goals. So, with EYOS, rest assured you will be discovering these remote locations in a safe and responsible manner.

Again, lots and specifics were still being assembled as we went to press. In the meantime, you can slake your vintage motoring thirst with these highlights from recent Bonhams motor vehicle auctions: A 1936 Brough Superior 990CC SS100 motorcycle went for over $288,000 at a spring motorbike event, and at a recent car auction in Goodwood, UK, a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 coupe went for nearly $620,000. bonhams.com Where to Stay The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection, is a stunning boutique luxury hotel with a rooftop bar that’s become the place to be seen in Newport.

Fine Watches Sotheby’s Bidding opens September 15, 2022 10:00 CET Paris, France The summer’s timepiece auction season was one for the record books, and this watch auction in Paris promises to continue that rarefied vibe with anticipated lots from Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Cartier, and Breguet. While lots were still being assembled and specific information was unavailable at press time, Sotheby’s scored a big win at its auction in Geneva over the summer, selling off an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, owned by the watch’s iconic designer Gerald Genta, for a whopping $2.1 million. While perhaps that level of gravitas may be hard to match, the Paris auction should deliver a similar level of hotness and timepiece desirability. sothebys.com Where to Stay The stately Four Seasons Hotel Georges V is a quick trip around the rotary on the Champs Elysees from the auction house.

01 Hermès Arceau Le Temps Voyageur Both Elizabeth Doerr and Susanne Samuelsson include the Hermès Arceau Le Temps Voyageur in their curated collections. “This is a very useful complication in a very clever execution that has a wildly imaginative imaginary backstory and is incredibly simple to use and read: simply press the pusher to rotate the hour-andminute subdial around the dial periphery to the selected city to set a time zone,” says Elizabeth. “The time on the dial adjusts automatically. But the best thing is that it’s a pleasure to watch the subdial orbit the dial.” Susanne agrees, “Hermès makes watches that are different, and the latest Arceau Le Temps Voyageur is no exception. This surprising travel time watch features a turning satellite subdial that travels over a magical imaginary equestrian map dial. A pusher on the case side allows you to move the subdial along the 24 different cities, and the hour hand of the local time is automatically updated in the process. Housed in a 38 mm stainless steel case with a blue lacquered dial, the Arceau Voyageur is the ideal travel companion.” 02 Patek Philippe Ref. 5470P-0011 The watch is a top pick for Roberta Naas’s curated collection of favorites. “At first glance, this new 1/10th of a Second Monopusher Chronograph might not look like it should be a favorite (other than the fact that it is a Patek Philippe watch),” says Roberta. “However, a closer look reveals how technically advanced the watch is. The 396-part movement was 10 years in the making, holds 31 patents, and is the brand’s first highfrequency (5Hz) caliber. The display of 1/10th of a second on the dial is mesmerizing, but the technology inside is mind-boggling.”

03 Jaeger-LeCoultre Rendez-Vous Dazzling Star Both Elizabeth Doerr and Susanne Samuelsson were also in agreement in picking JaegerLeCoultre’s Rendez-Vous Dazzling Star as a top pick. “The not-yetseen horological complication inside this gorgeous timepiece randomly shoots a star across an exquisite blue aventurine dial, thereby capturing the unpredictability of the natural shooting star,’ says Elizabeth. “Activated by the movement of the wrist (just like winding the movement), the shooting star appears on the dial at random moments, usually four to six times per hour.” Samuelsson adds, “Have we not all looked up at the night sky hoping to see a shooting star? Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new 36 mm Dazzling Star makes this wish a reality with a unique complication that recreates this fascinating celestial phenomenon. Activated by the movement of your wrist, a shooting star traces an arc across the middle of the aventurine dial at random, usually four to six times an hour. The star may also be triggered on-demand by turning the crown several times. The rose gold 36 mm case and dial are set with 181 diamonds for 3.48 carats.”

04 A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Minute Repeater Elizabeth Doerr also selects the A. Lange & Söhne‘s Richard Lange Minute Repeater as a top pick for its minimalistic perfection. “This watch is perhaps the purest essence of A. Lange & Söhne distilled into one watch despite the incredible complication housed within,” says Elizabeth. “The time and the chimes are driven by a sensational new and perfectly finished movement with nothing extraneous. It’s so svelte that it looks like an unassuming dress watch until it begins to ring.“ 05 Ulysse Nardin Freak S “Billing its newest caliber as a vertical odyssey, Ulysse Nardin’s Freak S watch resembles a spaceship with twin reactors and is the world’s first automatic double-oscillating watch with differential,” says Roberta Nass. “The unique Grinder system is patented and is twice as efficient as traditional automatic winding systems. With no crown, the vertically built movement is set with the turn of the bezel. Just 75 pieces will be made.” 06 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph Susanne Samuelsson’s final pick is a classic. “The iconic Royal Oak, first launched in 1972, saw a redesign for its 50th anniversary this year. This new chronograph version features a stainless steel case and bracelet and the reintroduction of the stunning Bleu Nuit Nuage 50 Grande Tapisserie dial. This version is powered by an automatic in-house movement and is also available in several dial variations such as silver, gray, and a super cool ice blue.”

06

07

07 Cartier Masse Mysterieuse This watch is another favorite for Roberta. “Definitively a headliner, this watch is a world’s-first timepiece, with its entire 435-part 9801 MC movement compacted and placed within the automatic winding oscillating weight (rotor). Over eight years in the research, development, and design stages, the new caliber has a patent pending. On the technical side, this is a mind-boggling feat, and just 30 pieces will be made.”

Global 8000 THE NEED FOR SPEED WORDS SEBASTIAN MACDOUGALL

L U X L I F E B O M B A R D I E R

8 1

02

“I feel the need—the need for speed!” That was the famous line spoken by Maverick (Tom Cruise) from the 1986 hit movie Top Gun. Fast forward 36 years and not only is the sequel Top Gun: Maverick in theatres, but those same words capture the essence of Bombardier’s latest flagship—the Global 8000 business jet. Launched at the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) earlier this year, the Global 8000 business jet has captured both the headlines and the hearts of the aviation industry, thanks in large part to how fast it can fly. With a top speed of Mach 0.94, the Global 8000 aircraft is the fastest civil aircraft since the Concorde and the first transport category aircraft to officially break the sound barrier in testing. But that’s where the similarities to the Concorde end. The Global 8000 private jet takes comfort and luxury to another level, with four spacious suites that include an available bedroom and en suite. This will most certainly be popular with passengers since it is not only the fastest business jet—but the farthest—capable of flying 8,000 nautical miles. To put that in perspective, the Global 8000 business jet can fly from London to Perth or Dubai to Houston. In fact, there aren’t too many places you can’t fly to on the Global 8000 private jet.

03

While the performance of this jet is certainly impressive, what is equally impressive are the features this aircraft offers its passengers. For Bombardier, just making it on time to your destination isn’t enough. They want you to feel as good when you step off the plane as you did when you stepped on it. That’s why they developed some of the most innovative features and technologies in the industry that they claim make their cabin the healthiest in the industry. One of the most notable features is their Pur Air system which features a HEPA and carbon filter to remove up to 99.99% of viruses, allergens and bacteria, as well as noxious fumes and gases. Along with better air in the cabin, they have a circadian lighting system called Soleil that can help synchronize your sleep and wake pattern to the time at your destination and can help ward off jet lag. If that weren’t enough, they developed the industry’s first-ever zero gravity seat called Nuage. It can recline and pivot simultaneously to cradle the body and help reduce lower back pressure. And the list goes on, from a fullsize kitchen to an entertainment suite with surround sound and a state-of-the-art cockpit for the pilots—Bombardier’s engineers and designers thought of everything. Whether your need is for speed, range or comfort, Bombardier’s Global 8000 business jet has got you covered, so you can channel your inner Maverick and feel like a top gun every time you fly. businessaircraft.bombardier.com 01 Bombardier's Global 8000 has a top speed of Mach 0.94 02 Circadian lighting helps synchronize your sleep and wake pattern 03 Zero gravity seating and an entertainment suite add comfort 04 Four spacious suites include an available bedroom and en-suite 05 A full-size kitchen can be found onboard 04

With the inevitability of hybrid technology and automotive electrification, the next few years should represent a veritable paradise for car fans looking to scoop up the last of the potentially important collectible gas-powered cars, especially those that unapologetically flex their full-fuel muscle. 01 Lamborghini Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae Prices from $498,298 While the limited-to-112-editions of the very special hybrid Countach LPI 800-4 plans that are afoot of late in Sant’Agata may sully the estimable legacy of the highly collectible 70s-era Countach in some purists’ eyes, Lambo will still make full-fuel monsters that smack of collectability before it switches to integrating electrification across the line next year. The limited edition Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae represents the end of production for the V12-powered hypercar, in the form of only 350 coupes and 250 roadsters. With a 2.8-second 0-to-60mph giddy-up and all the angularly gorgeous Lambo design DNA, you might want to change that line from Mad Max to “...the last of the V12 interceptors.” lamborghini.com

02 Jaguar F-Type R Prices from $103,200 It’s no mistake that F comes after E in the alphabet, and even more so when you consider that the designers at Jaguar are plotting to create a legend behind the brand’s joyful two-seater F-Type sportster that may match the gravitas of the 1960s-era Jaguar E-Type (considered by many car collectors to be one of the most beautiful vintage cars ever created). While the British carmaker has been making a lot of hay in the luxury alternative power arena with the all-electric I-PACE SUV, the sporty $103,200 F-Type R still burns up the roads with a 5-liter, 575hp supercharged V8 power plant that pushes the gorgeous vehicle around the curves like a bobsled on an oiled ice track. This is sheer driving dynamics that hybrid and electric approaches may never catch up with. jaguarusa.com

03 Maserati Grecale Modena Limited Edition SUV Prices from $83,900 While technically a mild-hybrid model, this online-only limited edition that went up for sale in the spring with first deliveries scheduled as you read this, has all the exclusivity boxes checked for a potential future collectible car. The online reservation window may have closed, but many of those buyers were probably buying on spec and may be interested in flipping. The online reservation version, powered by a 2-liter, 423hp supercharged V4, went for $83,900 in Rosso Granturismo red when the offer debuted. When the model officially hits the market after the initial online reserved models, the top-of-the-line Grecale Trofeo will be powered by a 523hp V6 based on the Maserati MC20 supercar Nettuno engine. 04 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet Prices from $137,200 Porsche’s popular electric Taycan may be practically a phenom as it changes hearts and minds with its favorable, P-word performance and dynamics. But, if you want to own the essence of Porsche - and I won’t make any apologies - you’re talking about a gas-powered 911. The latest 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, which starts at $137,200, injects a bit of open-air style and fun into the unmistakeable driving experience. With a top track speed of 188mph, this auto’s velocity is generated by a thrumming 443hp twin-turbo boxer 6-cylinder engine. The legendary lickety-split PDK transmission creates a fuel-only shifting symphony like no other (well, maybe the full-manual option creates an equally beautiful noise), and while Porsche hasn’t announced detailed plans for 911 electrification, you really can’t go wrong with investing in a car like this at any time. But, you may want to keep it in your collection and on your regular driving schedule - forever. porsche.com

N E W

As over-water rum shacks go, Basil’s Bar is pretty unbeatable. Many have tried to replicate the cocktail of intangibles that have appealed to generations of party-goers heading to this Caribbean paradise, but no one can ever quite reproduce the essence of Basil’s – or indeed Mustique – itself. Philippe Starck oversaw a total rebuild of Basil’s in 2018, keeping the DNA of Basil’s fundamentally unchanged while adding a significant sparkle and style to the venue. Jazz and live music pulses from the stage by artists who fly in from all over the world to play at rum-fueled “Jump Up” parties for guests and celebrities (who also have a tendency to hop onto the stage for a song or two), while the sun sets and turtles bob up for air in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the bar. Serving a selection of light bites, including tacos, fish, jerk chicken, burgers and flatbreads, as well as killer Mustique Mule cocktails, Basil's ensures you’re all set for a fun night ashore. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, Mustique’s sophisticated Veranda serves both classic and contemporary dishes using house rubs and delicately spiced marinades. Diners can enjoy a selection of smaller sharing plates or larger main-sized dishes, matched with a tantalizing range of flavor-packed side dishes, all cooked using traditional smoking and over-flame grilling methods. The award-winning wine list will excite even the most enthusiastic connoisseurs. Basil's Bar is open daily from 10 am until late, with food served from 12 pm – 3 pm and 6 pm – 10 pm. The Veranda is open for dinner every day except Tuesday and Thursday, 7 pm – 9:30 pm (last orders). Security clearance for yacht arrivals is required and can be taken care of at the booking stage.

Whether your dream is to dine on fresh seafood beachfront in the Grenadines, enjoy a cocktail against the backdrop of a spectacular sunset in The Bahamas, or walk on the wild side in Antarctica, the winter season offers countless options for superyacht cruising. Here we profile the season’s hottest destinations and what they have to offer the waterborne.

Best for Families Leeward Islands A playground for superyachts, the Leeward Islands abound with dramatic scenery, fantastic beaches, fascinating history and world-class cuisine. The cruising grounds arguably offer the greatest attractions for all the family, with a variety of activities and culture on offer. Family togetherness is particularly special on a superyacht, but time ashore discovering new cultures will keep children’s eyes wide with wonder. Antigua's naval dockyard is steeped in maritime history – its forts and colonial buildings will keep the children entertained while they take in a bit of history. Tales of pirates on the island of St. Kitts can be the inspiration for Pirates of the Caribbean-themed treasure hunts, and obstacle courses on the water or on any of the beaches will keep the most active young guests occupied while mom and dad enjoy some quiet time on board. Alternatively, all the islands provide numerous marine adventures, with plenty of scope to make use of the yacht’s toy box.

03

Navigator recommends While the children are thoroughly entertained, acclimatize to “island time” and take advantage of the local flora and fauna signature treatments at some of the finest spas the islands have to offer. Try the Guerlain Spa at the Cheval Blanc St-Barthélémy, or a Signature Island Journeys at the Jumby Bay Spa, Antigua.

The Bahamas Countless cruising grounds worldwide can be adapted to excellent family charters, but the most popular itineraries involve hopping between islands without too many long transits between. With more than 700 islands, cays and islets at your fingertips, The Bahamas offer an abundance of fun for all ages. Often the islands are just minutes from each other, so exploring the area on a yacht allows for plenty of time to play both aboard and ashore. The most popular cruising grounds are found in the Exumas archipelago, where each island is unique and guests can experience something new every day. Drop anchor and swim ashore to the smaller islets and discover exotic wildlife and spectacular beaches, or take the tender to the larger islands where you will find quaint restaurants and bars, golf courses and boutiques. Sampling a bit of both worlds is the ideal combination. Navigator recommends Any itinerary should consider fishing, be it bonefishing or deep sea; the waters are teeming with mahi mahi, wahoo, tuna and marlin.

07

The Grenadines What’s half the fun of being on an island? Hopping on and off it, of course – which makes the Grenadines ideal for the waterborne. Comprising a secluded cluster of islands just 100 miles from Barbados, the Grenadines archipelago entertains superyachts and adventure-seekers alike. Sprinkled between the volcanic peaks of St. Vincent and Grenada, the 60-mile trail of palmstudded sandbars, coral reefs and tiny islets hasn’t changed much since Columbus first sailed these crystal-clear waters. With their combination of steady winds, dramatic landscapes and natural harbors, this archipelago offers an abundance of natural beauty, ample dive sites and some of the best fishing grounds in the world. Cruise from Bequia – one of the most developed islands in the chain – to the glamorous and sophisticated island of Mustique – a private retreat of barefoot luxury. From here, set a short course for the Tobago Cays; five uninhabited palm-fringed islets ringed by pristine white sand beaches and clear waters. Union Island and Petit St. Vincent are next in line with their varied coastlines and offshore islets ideal for diving and snorkeling.

08 09

Navigator recommends The Tobago Cays are a protected national marine park. Ideal for snorkeling, the calm waters allow you to float over the coral reef.

RECOMMENDED YACHTS TO CHARTER IN THE CARIBBEAN 06 With her expansive exterior spaces for socializing and entertaining, the 144’ (43.89m) KING BABY is perfect for the alfresco lifestyle that the Caribbean islands are all about. Prices from $130,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests. 08 The 191’ (58.2m) UNBRIDLED offers unique aquatic experiences with SCUBA instructors Captain Gui and Cathryn Garcia overseeing the diving program. TOP FIVE REASONS TO CHARTER THIS WINTER 1. Berthing Outside of the absolute peak season, berths are readily available with far lower prices than in the Mediterranean. 2. Favorable charter rates The winter cruising grounds have a much longer low season than the Mediterranean summer season, so there are well-priced offers to be found (outside of Christmas and New Year). 3. More availability Most charter yachts have a few weeks of availability during off-peak periods allowing you to plan later. 4. Quiet anchorages The majority of anchorages tend to be quieter than those in the Mediterranean, making it more pleasurable overall and allowing for more spontaneity. 5. Climate Aside from Antarctica, the recommended winter cruising grounds have a balmy climate with temperatures of 86°F while it can be as chilly as 46°F at home!

Best for Adventures New Zealand For those looking for true escapism and adventure, a charter along New Zealand’s extensive coastlines combines a little bit of luxury with dramatic encounters. Year-round sunshine, diverse natural landscapes and untouched native forests make the North and South Islands the perfect outdoor adventure destination. Whether your itinerary takes in the marine reserves and islands lying off North Island, or heads to South Island to glide along the Marlborough Sounds, the best of New Zealand is all about taking to the water. Navigator recommends There are several popular cruising itineraries for New Zealand, including the beautiful Bay of Islands and the stunning Marlborough Sounds.

Antarctica As the demand for bucket list adventures continues to increase, so does the explorative nature of the experience. A rise in intrepid charterers and owners coveting an immersive voyage in the most remote parts of the planet has led to more explorer yachts cruising to off-the-beaten-path destinations, including Antarctica. Few have experienced the enormity of this vast continent, which has to be the most adventurous of cruising grounds. Cruise through a maze of protected channels found along the Antarctic Peninsula’s west coast with mink and humpback whales. Further south, discover vast icecaps along the east coast and a wildlife oasis like no other along the Scotia Arc. Navigator recommends December and January welcome the sun for 20 hours a day, while February and March are the best months to journey deeper into the polar circle as the pack ice is at a minimum.

RUGGED LUXURY CHARTER IN ANTARCTICA 11 Discover the vast ice continent aboard the well-heeled, iconic 414’ (126m) explorer yacht OCTOPUS. Prices from $2,200,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.

Best for Green Escapades Indonesia Wending your way in and out of Indonesia’s archipelagos, you can discover attractions ranging from the majestic Raja Ampat Islands to the stunning Komodo archipelago. Despite their recent rise in popularity, the cruising grounds remain beautiful and unspoiled, blessed with year-round warm temperatures, a colorful underwater world and ideal sailing conditions. The largely uninhabited waters are home to the country’s largest marine national park, a huge number of world-class dive sites, and the highest recorded marine biodiversity on earth. Scientists have cataloged more than six times as many coral species in just a few acres that live in the entire Caribbean. The Galápagos are made up of 12 main islands and hundreds of islets and rocks floating in one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. Discover landscapes of wild mangroves, volcanoes, inland lagoons, cliffs and stunning coastlines – the islands deliver a revelation at every anchorage. Canada 1 Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort Fly fishing has been around a while, but things have changed somewhat since primitive man first honed a shard of bone into a fishing hook. The tools have since improved immeasurably and today there is an arsenal of high-tech equipment available. Add to this the opportunity to experience locations that were previously inaccessible where the fish are as ripe for catching as they are plentiful, and you have the perfect wilderness setting. One such place that has earned acclaim for its excellent fly fishing is Nimmo Bay in British Columbia. Home to the Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort, this is the place to go for some of the best helifishing in the world. The rivers are alive with fish and there are dozens to choose from, including rainbow and steelhead trout (for skilled fly-fishers), Dolly Varden, char, and all salmon varieties. All the equipment you will need is provided, or you can bring your own, but the fishery has a catch-andrelease policy so only barbless hooks can be used. Flying high above misted forests, towering mountains, crystal-clear rivers and landscapes abounding with grizzly bears, wolves and eagles, this is the ultimate wilderness adventure.

03

Back at the resort, guests have a choice of accommodation either in one of six intertidal cottages or one of three streamside properties. The entire resort can be exclusively reserved for a single party of up to 18 guests, who can come together to dine on fantastic cuisine (fresh, local fish, of course) in the main lodge, or in Little River, the new floating restaurant. New Zealand 2 Poronui Lodge Over on the other side of the world on New Zealand’s spectacular North Island, the 16,000-acre Poronui estate is located in the Taharua Valley near Taupõ. Home to Mãori hunters and English settlers over the course of its history, the estate welcomes guests to angle for rainbow and brown trout across many miles of mountain creeks, rivers and streams. Given these excellent waters, heli-fishing is not always necessary, but helicopters and highly experienced pilots and guides are on hand to whisk guests further afield to backcountry, wilderness fishing spots along renowned fisheries such as the Ngaruroro and Rangitikei rivers or remote backcountry streams. This gives avid fishermen the extra option, particularly if rains leave some rivers unfishable. In such cases the mountain headwaters offer perfect fishing conditions, and the helicopters can get you to these remote wilderness spots quickly and easily. What’s more, flying over the dramatic beech forests and alpine meadows is a stunning experience in itself.

07

“These waters, deep in the mountains, can be hugely challenging for all levels of fishing enthusiasts,” says General Manager Steve Smith. “Catching a trophy trout from deep, clear pools requires patience and accuracy, but the effort is worth it!” The myriad waters within fishing distance of Poronui enable most anglers to be catered for. Early season conditions on smaller streams favor the novice angler, while even the most competent will be tested fishing the high-country water in mid-summer. Luckily, Poronui has expert guides on hand to impart their extensive local angling knowledge. Back at the luxury sporting lodge, it’s not all about the primitive wilderness. Guests can access a full array of spa facilities, superb cuisine and fine wine from the underground cellar. When it comes to retiring for the night, Poronui offers three options, including the main Poronui Lodge with seven guest cabins situated alongside the Taharua River, a secluded rustic-luxe safari camp on the banks of the mighty Mohaka River at the property’s back boundary, and the utterly unique Blake House private villa, which resides on an imperious plateau overlooking the Taharua valley. 06 Catching a trophy trout from deep clear pools requires patience and skill 07 Helicopters and highly experienced pilots and guides are on hand to whisk guests further afield 08 Poronui Lodge offers a full array of lifestyle amenities, including a spa

Patagonia 3 Rio Palena Lodge All the way down in the southern hemisphere, surrounded by lush Patagonian wilderness, the remote Rio Palena Lodge offers some of the most scenic fishing in the world. “Fishing in the Southern Hemisphere is always great because, for a lot of American and European anglers, it takes place in our winter, their summer,” says Brian O’Keefe, Angling Product Manager for experiential travel company Eleven Experience.

Set on a scenic stretch of river in the Lake District of Chilean Patagonia, the Rio Palena Lodge is so remote that just to reach it involves an adventure in itself, but once there, guests reap the benefits of its isolation with extraordinary and plentiful fishing adventures. “There are so many rivers and lakes that are populated with larger-than-average wild trout, where fly fishing tackle and techniques are very similar to the style of fishing in Michigan, Montana, Oregon, and other great fishing destinations,” says Brian. “You will rarely see another angler for a whole week, or more.” After being whisked by helicopter over the Andean peaks to hard-to-reach lakes, anglers embark on inflatable rafts to cast out along reeds in the hope of catching gigantic wild brown and rainbow trout. 09 10

The journey may not be strenuous (the helicopter takes just 15 minutes as opposed to an arduous trek) but the fight and haul to catch these magnificent lake trout will leave you ready for a peaceful slumber back at the sumptuous lodge. But first, kick back on the deck overlooking the tranquil river and celebrate your triumphs (or toast the one that got away) with a fine Chilean wine or Pisco Sour. Or, soak weary muscles in the wood-fired hot tub and sauna, before enjoying a Chilean Asado (a traditional barbecue).

With easy access to the historic village’s Main Street and Job Lane, which features fine restaurants, designer boutiques and fine-art galleries, summers in Southampton are what memories are made of. Just 90 minutes from New York City, Southampton offers some of the best properties in the world, and Gin Lane is regarded by many as the finest of oceanfront locations in all of the Hamptons. One of the most classically “quintessential Hamptons” homes in the area, the sensational seaside estate of 233 Gin Lane was designed by the esteemed architectural firm Fleetwood & McMullan. Primed for entertaining en masse courtesy of a sprawling floorplan that spans nearly 8,300 square feet, the estate includes seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The elegance found within its walls are expected and nod to traditional architecture and touches of minimalistic chic. The ground floor living room and dining room spill off a double-height grand foyer, leading on to a large kitchen/gathering room (one of such spaces on this level) and separate breakfast room. An elevator transports guests from the large formal and informal ground floor up to the second floor, where they are afforded sweeping views to the Atlantic Ocean. Situated on 2.14 acres, a large sweeping driveway leads to the front of the shingle-style property, behind which all the outdoor lifestyle amenities are located for absolute privacy. These include a large, covered loggia, 25' by 55’ heated swimming pool, tennis court, an allee’ of flowering trees and sweeping lawns. 233 Gin Lane is perfectly suited for both full-time living, weekend getaways or long summer vacations from the city – a seaside sanctuary for a water-lover who enjoys welcoming good company and an active cultural roster that includes open-air concerts, local fireworks displays and a rich list of well-planned social events throughout the year.
