‘LIFE IS SHORT’ IS AN OFT-USED PHRASE TO BE SURE....

But here we are in the sweet spot of life with happy children, a business moving in the right direction, and family doing well. Combine this with working in the yachting industry and what more could you ask for? Perhaps you’d choose an exciting (and educational) adventure with a touch of work thrown in here and there?

Shipyard visits are a great part of this job. Each yard has a unique personality, flavor, operating theory, facility and mission. The construction process combines the finest, most creative minds in the industry. It’s always a treat to see how a yard moves forward and what it chooses to incorporate to produce the best yacht possible.

That’s exactly what I was able to experience recently as several teammates and I attended the launch party of the Van Lent Feadship 809. It was spectacular — not only the yacht, but also the wonderful family, excellent captain, chief stewardess and crew. This is a truly magnificent project to be involved with. The yard has done a superb job and the yacht is amazing.

And just as important as the yard is experiencing the town in which the yard is located. Exploring the sights, sounds and — of course — tastes definitely is a critical piece of the dynamic. As when you build a yacht, you become part of the family and the locale becomes “home.”

After the launch, we visited 11 additional shipyards to update our knowledge…and to have some fun. We met with Royal Huisman and Oceanco in Holland; Nobiskrug, Lürssen, and Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany; Mondomarine, Tankoa, CRN and Sanlorenzo in Italy; and then we were off to the great state of Washington in the U.S. to visit Delta and Westport.

With spring upon us and summer right around the corner, it’s time to indulge your passions. Perhaps you’d like to take an exotic glamping trip — read more about this issue’s Well Rested column on page 26. Or maybe you’re more suited to explore the world of South American wines? You can get the full scoop on page 44. And if yachting is your ultimate passion, this issue won’t disappoint. Enjoy GRAVITAS’s new photo shoot and learn how the owners of AMARULA SUN seize every opportunity to enjoy their yacht. Whatever your pleasure, get comfortable, daydream and enjoy la dolce vita! After all, how many summers are there?

Many owners find the build process as enjoyable as cruising. The late, legendary, Jim Moran built eight Feadships because he loved the process, the people, the yacht and the cruising — Mr. Moran had the passion. Kevin Merrigan, President And when you combine that with good health and loving friends and family, you find the true essence of life.

01 SARP 46M to Launch The multi-award winning SARP 46m is undergoing trials and will be available for delivery in time for the 2016 summer season. Great praise was received recently by SARP YACHTS when, in collaboration with Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker John Solomon, it hosted a visit by 10 experienced brokers from the leading brokerage houses. The visitors paid tribute to the superb attention to detail that is apparent throughout the SARP 46m and to the immaculate and modern shipyard that implements systems, processes and an attitude typically associated only with its Northern European counterparts. From management to shop floor, there is a desire to do the job right, which manifests itself in all aspects of the business and is certainly reflected in the yacht’s comprehensive turnkey specification that includes tenders and owner’s supply. The eagerly awaited SARP 46m provides accommodation for up to 12 guests in five tremendous staterooms. Two doubles and two twins (both with Pullman berths) are on the lower deck, and a splendid full-beam master suite is on the main deck with an adjoining study, his-andhers bathrooms and walk-in closets. A wonderful balance is found between internal and external spaces with neither feeling as if it has been comprised to benefit the other. The yacht’s nine crew will be delighted to find that her designers have paid particular attention to operational practicality. Naval architecture and external styling are by Taka Yacht Design. The yacht’s steel displacement hull was comprehensively analyzed to reduce resistance and wave profile while her composite superstructure requires less maintenance and benefits stability by reducing weight aloft. Internal design comes from the highly respected drawing board of the multi-award-winning Adam Lay Studio. Their brief was to create a sophisticated and elegant interior with a clean simplicity of design that results in an inviting, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The yard’s choice to build to the prestigious American Bureau of Shipping classification, ABS +A1 demonstrates its desire to be taken seriously. In fact, many elements of the construction reach beyond class requirements. SARP YACHTS has justifiably received several awards for their considerable efforts that have attracted significant attention and compliments from the superyacht industry, clients and the media. This is a yard that is worthy of attention and will go from strength to strength.

05 Northrop & Johnson Opens Queensland, Australia, Office Northrop & Johnson is continuing its global expansion by adding an Australian office to its roster. Based in what arguably is Australia’s yachting hub, the office is located in Burleigh Heads in Queensland’s Gold Coast. Northrop & Johnson’s first Australian team members are Managing Director Australia Cameron Bray and Charter Manager Crystal Corrin. Navigator magazine sat down with Bray to get the full scoop on the new office, what role it will play on the global yachting market and the state of the Australian superyacht market, among other things. Q Please take us through your history of work in the yachting industry through your latest enterprise before joining Northrop & Johnson: A I have had various roles in the yachting industry since my start. During my time as a crewmember, the yacht cruised extensively throughout Europe during the summers and spent winter yard periods in Italy. The foundation skills I learned there were invaluable to my future and cemented me in the industry. An opportunity then led me back to Australia where I was able to combine my love of boats and business in a shore-based career. I’ve had various roles and experiences in brokerage, new construction, charter sales, marketing, media and eventually yacht management — all of which gave me the holistic knowledge required to launch into my own business. In 2012, I started Bray Management as a charter management and sales firm with the mission of creating “unforgettable experiences” for our clients. I wanted to raise the bar of what was being offered to clients in Australia through service and knowledgeable advice. I saw there was a gap in the market as yachts were getting larger and legislations more complex, but often these yachts were still being managed in-house. Bray Management has grown into a leading yacht charter and management firm in Australia, representing more than 50 yachts Australia-wide.

What do you think are the benefits of joining a company such as N&J? Northrop & Johnson has an incredibly strong marketing and branding presence worldwide; the brand is recognized as one of the industry leaders and its name immediately instills in clients confidence that they are dealing with the experts. The company’s framework, intelligence systems and processes, along with its key network of clients, partners and industry contacts, will give us a very advantageous position to provide unique opportunities and timely responses to our clients in Australia. What do you think will be the benefits of N&J having an office in Australia? Being able to offer an end-to-end service to Australia-based clients through a local office is the major benefit. There really isn’t anyone offering a complete full-service package, including sale, purchase, management, charter, crew placement and agency services, in Australia. What, in your opinion, is the current state of yachting in Australia? Australia has a rich maritime culture as the world’s largest island. The yachting industry is rather buoyant, especially the charter industry as everyone from local families to corporate groups to international guests are keen to experience the amazing Australian waterscape.

Where, in your opinion, do you see the yachting in Australia going in the next five years? The charter industry is growing from strength to strength. We’re seeing more international guests chartering superyachts in Australia and, this year alone, eight new superyachts have entered the domestic charter market. With the current lobbying efforts, more foreign-flagged yachts are expected to cruise the waters of How did the decision to join Northrop & Johnson come about? Australia and charter here, too. Ideally, the Australian owners of larger superyachts Bray Management had been considering partnership opportunities in order to strengthen its position within the market. Northrop & Johnson’s company culture and can have them cruise in their own backyard. ethos are very much in line with those of Bray Management. Furthermore, Northrop & Johnson is incredibly well respected around the world and is on a growth scale like What, if any, influences will the Northrop & Johnson Australia office Bray. I met with COO Daniel Ziriakus at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and discussions have on the yachting sector in Australia? grew organically since then. This move feels like the right one for those of us at Bray Professionalism and best practice standards are increasing in Australia, and with more Australian firms now accredited by MYBA, the introduction of a Northrop & Management; it feels like we’re joining a big, global family. Johnson office will only see that best practice expectation increase.

SEEN HEARD

01 2015 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show The only thing hotter than the weather at the 2015 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) was the color of the blazing orange Aston Martin Vantage perfectly positioned at the front of Northrop & Johnson’s brand new, gleaming white display towering above the docks. In addition to N&J’s Global Luxury Partner Aston Martin’s striking car, Global Luxury Partner Arnold & Son was in attendance with an array of spectacular timepieces available for inspection. A beautiful Manta piano serenaded guests thanks to sponsor Goldfinch, Mondomarine displayed models of its latest three concepts and was on hand to discuss new projects, and sponsors Sentient Jet, Christophe Harbour, The British Virgin Islands Tourism Board, Bal Harbour Shops and Sotheby’s One were present with exciting news about their companies. Aston Martin also offered daily show pick-ups 02 and drop-offs and test drives for Northrop & Johnson clients. On November 7, in true FLIBS fashion, Northrop & Johnson welcomed the Kids In Distress (KID) charity to its stand to host the Boys N’ Toys Yacht Hop and Auction. The fifth edition of this annual FLIBS favorite kicked off with a silent auction. This rousing event offered items such as a private dinner cruise with famed Captain Lee Rosbach of Bravo TV’s “Below Deck” and a much-coveted Arnold & Son watch. 02 Antigua Charter Yacht Show 2015 More than 85 yachts gathered in the tropical isle of Antigua from December 4 to 10 for the annual Antigua Charter Yacht Show. Spread out among three marinas— Nelson’s Dockyard Marina in English Harbour, the Falmouth Harbour Marina and the Antigua Yacht Club Marina — yachts were available to charter brokers from around the world, who also converged on the island to get a taste of the talents of crew and amenities of the yachts in preparation for the 2015-2016 winter charter season. Northrop & Johnson had an excellent presence at the show, displaying six yachts from its charter fleet. 03 Thailand Yacht Show 2016 This year was the first edition of the Thailand Yacht Show in Phuket; the event was held in the Ao Po Grand Marina. The show experienced an unexpected turnout of superyachts, which was a nice surprise for Northrop & Johnson’s Asia offices, which exhibited in the show. The show itself very much was “business as usual” with dealers and brokers unanimously expressing satisfaction with the way the event was unfolding. Ao Po Marina had the facilities to display much larger yachts than was possible at previous industry events in the area. In the future, superyachts of 100 meters will be able to display. 04 Phuket International Boat Show 2016 The 13th Phuket International Boat Show, a four-day show of marine and luxury brands, welcomed 5,500 attendees in 2016 — 45 percent of attendees were international, primarily European. The show also saw robust growth in the number of Thai nationals attending. The diversity of exhibitors and sales quite accurately portrays Phuket as the heart of boating in the region. With more than 60 international marine brands represented, the line-up was the most diverse ever and had a 34 percent increase in the number of sailing yachts and multi-hulled yachts displayed this year.

NORTHROP & JOHNSON SALES BROKER & NEW CONSTRUCTION EXPERT JOE FOGGIA SHARES INCREDIBLE INSIGHT INTO WHAT MAKES THIS SECTOR OF THE INDUSTRY TICK... Q The yachting industry has seemingly recovered from the economic downturn of 2008. What impact did this global event have on the new construction sector in the yachting industry? A From late 2008 to late 2010, the financial crisis devastated the yachting industry. During that time, I was with Christensen Yachts and I remember not having one sales call for fourteen months. At Christensen, we actually diversified the workforce into renewable energy and began manufacturing wind turbines and hydrokinetic energy devices to be utilized in waterways, tidal flats and in-line freshwater supplies. The downturn was particularly extreme because it truly was global; all banks worldwide were not loaning money, hence all economies were suffering. Past recessions seemed to be more geographic, so if one economy was suffering, builders always could sell yachts to other prospering economies.

Since the recovery, where is the new construction sector of the yachting industry? In the 50-meter sector, although the perception is that this market became saturated from 2011 to 2015, it looks like there still is a lot of potential here. There always is a demand to have as much yacht as possible under 500 GRT. However, builders need to command higher pricing for these yachts. The concepts of these yachts are still custom (not production) and because their costs are now typically more than $30 million to produce, buyers will want to personalize them. There are a great number of yachts currently being built in the 60- to 90-meter sector. This area commands the proper pricing. The majority of these yachts are primarily built in Europe. The 100-meter-plus sector of the market has been booming. Most of these superyachts are being built in Germany and Holland; however, due to the demand, many are now being built in Italy and Turkey. Where do you foresee the new construction sector of the yachting industry in a year, three years or five years? Overall, I will answer this relative to the trend throughout the last thirty years. Size matters and I am not sure where the limit is, but it is conceivable to see much larger, island-like platforms and tanker-style yachts.

What is the most important thing for an owner to keep in mind when choosing to build a new yacht from the keel up? Always keep re-sale in mind through every phase of the design and build. One day the owner or the owner’s family will need to sell the yacht. If the layout is universal then everything else can be changed to accommodate new interior finishes, furnishings and systems. What is your best advice to an owner in the middle of a new construction project? Make sure to have your surveyor check monthly that percentage of completion matches the milestones reached and the agreed payment schedule. Additionally, all subcontractors and vendors must be figured into the equation as to what extent they were paid and if those payments are up to date. What are the biggest trends you see and foresee in the new construction sector? As has been displayed by Feadship, I think structural glass not only will be used for huge windows and doors, but also for complete wall systems and even beach clubs/garage doors. It is conceivable to see more glass than other structural materials utilized. Glass is very strong, non-corrosive and can be molded in many shapes and sizes.

SPOTLIGHT CROMWELL LITTLEJOHN Q What is your background within the yachting industry and how did you come to be a yacht broker? A Born and raised on the fabulous east coast of Florida in Indialantic — a barrier island only five blocks wide with the Indian River on one side and Atlantic Ocean on the other — as kids, we water skied before school, surfed in the afternoon and sailed on weekends. At 13, my first “real” job was driving the forklift and travelift at a boatyard; eventually moving on to Hobie Cat rentals, commissioning new boats, then building Sea Rays.

The realization, at an early age, that my passion was helping others fall in love with being on the water drove me south toward Fort Lauderdale to seek a job in boat sales. I was invited to a charter brokers open house aboard the classic 82-foot BLACK NIGHT (a BIG boat back then) and was introduced to the captain, who offered a mate/engineer position. Three years later, after BLACK NIGHT secured the position of America’s Cup Race Committee yacht, it was time to return to Fort Lauderdale to begin a career in boat sales — managing several new boat dealerships before moving into the brokerage sector and ownership of a small brokerage firm.

Understanding that big boat experience was helpful in sales, I returned to the sea as captain of a tremendously successful charter boat, cruising The Bahamas, U.S. East Coast and Great Lakes before moving ashore to work in brokerage sales with Merle Wood & Associates as a senior sales and charter broker; a position held for 15 years before joining Northrop & Johnson this past summer after a quick demonstration of the sales and marketing tools the company had been developing.

A Board Member of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association (FYBA) for 11 years — including two years as President — and current Board Member of the American Yacht Charter Association (AYCA), I was awarded 2015 “Broker of the Year” by the FYBA, a tremendous honor and one of the highlights of my career (to date!). What is your best advice to a first-time yacht buyer? Call Me! Okay, find a broker that you can work with — someone with the experience and resources in the general size range of your interests and one with a firm that regularly works within that range. You’ll get access to better information, often including options not “officially” on the market. At Northrop & Johnson, we share with brokers and firms that have similar interests and have information and listings to share with us. Additionally, when one works with multiple brokers, you’ll hear why each has “the best” offerings and all the other options second or third tier. Establish a relationship with a good broker from a reputable firm and let them go to work for you!

What is the most important facet to a successful yacht sale? Relationships — with today’s Internet, buyers often have access to much of the same data as brokers. Creating a relationship affords you the inside run on the market place, and often gives you access to yacht options that are not officially on the open market. Those offerings are likely to be known to a select few brokers. All brokers are working from virtually the same list of inventory (other than those few “confidentially offered listings”), so you’ll find the best information and the best opportunities when you’ve created a relationship that has both broker and client feeling comfortable.

Where, in your opinion, do you see the global yacht brokerage market going in the next five years? If my crystal ball was clear, you’d find me out cruising on my yacht. But most indicators suggest that the market will continue to improve, slowly, but steadily. New build orders are strong, especially at the well-known, pedigreed yards, and new, start-up yards are launching projects in excess of 60 meters, often with surprisingly high quality. We’re likely to continue to see the driving force nationalities pass the baton several times over the next few years as global economics and social economics remain fluid and ever changing. Global markets that were the engine of the market a few years ago are now virtually nonexistent, while markets that were rather quiet in recent years are now dominant.

2 1

Additionally, Northrop & Johnson’s global intelligence tools provide immediate access to the most comprehensive collection of data on every segment of the market from any Internet-connected device anywhere in the world. This offers access to not just photos and specifications, but also to hard current and historical data on every boat — it’s an amazing system that is continually being updated and expanded upon.

What are your five must-have features on a yacht? One, two and three are great crew, Great Crew and GREAT CREW. There are few better places to wine and dine in the spring and summer months than New York City. This international hot spot is home to some of the best chefs and restaurateurs in the world. One of Manhattan’s prime on-water restaurants is Grand Banks (O1) — a multi-award-winning oyster bar located on board the SHERMAN ZWICKER, a handcrafted wooden schooner christened in 1942 (O4).

04

06

This restaurant conjures images of Manhattan’s floating oyster barges of yesteryear. Here, you can enjoy delectable seafood, premium cocktails and impressive views of New York City (O2) and the harbor. The brainchild of two sailors — and brothers — Miles and Alex Pincus and New York nightlife aficionado Adrien Gallo, Grand Banks is a partnership between the trio’s hospitality group, Summer Inc., and the not-for-profit Maritime Foundation. The restaurant helps to raise funds to support maritime preservation, education and conservation in the area. As of 2014, it had provided to the foundation more than $100,000, which has been used to restore health to rivers, develop New York Harbor’s oyster habitats and preserve historic, but at-risk vessels. Beyond simply “doing good,” the restaurant also serves up good eats. Renowned Chef Kerry Heffernan is not only a wiz in the kitchen, he also facilitates Grand Banks’s sustainability initiatives. Overseeing the beverage program is the world-famous cocktail connoisseur Lauren Schell of Milk & Honey fame. Grand Bank’s menu comprises a delightful selection of seasonal plates. While the main features are the wild-caught and sustainably harvested East and West Coast oysters (O3) — Heffernan likes to emphasize Atlantic oysters local to the New York waters — other favorites include fried soft shell crab with lemon, herb and espelette dressing; scallop ceviche with avocado, habanero, kaffir lime and mint; or the well-rated lobster roll of freshly prepared Maine lobster with herb, fennel, lemon, a dulse emulsion and boat-made pickles. As would be expected from a summertime hot spot (O7), the libations on board the SHERMAN ZWICKER at Grand Banks are something to write home about. Nautically themed, the signature cocktails feature fresh-squeezed juices, farm-to-table produce and quality spirits. Be sure to try the Sherman’s Cup — rosé, freshsqueezed lemon and lime, muddled orange and seasonal berries (O6); the Revolución —vodka, mint, fresh-squeezed lime and Angostura bitters; or the Italian Ambassador to Mars — Campari, fresh-squeezed orange and lemon and club soda. Grand Banks also offers an excellent wine list.

This year, experienced travelers will swap decadent fixed walls for a night under the stars. Sustainable high-end holidays known as “glamping” (glamorous camping) have skyrocketed in popularity with the jet-set crowd who are opting for something a little more unusual. Whether this is a Treehotel in the treetops of Sweden or a fixed tent (complete with luxury bathroom amenities) in the heart of the Masai Mara, camping has never been more on-trend.

Recreate the magic of old-world charm with a stay at The Chamba Camp, Thiksey in Thiksey, India — one of The Ultimate Travelling Camp campsites. This luxury resort offers individually designed tents, en-suite bathrooms, private decks, crisp linens and your very own butler. The Chamba Camp, Thiksey is located in the nomadic area of Ladakh where guests can watch a game of polo — the sport of the Royals of Ladakh — raft down the River Indus, or enjoy picturesque picnic lunches.

If India is a bit far, then try spending a night high in the pine forests of Sweden with a stay at the Treehotel. Six categories of tree houses are offered here; The Cabin, The UFO, The Mirrorcube, The Blue Cone, The Bird’s Nest and The Dragonfly. Think of a grown-up and thoroughly chic version of a traditional backyard tree house, but one that is designed by renowned Scandinavian architects and complete with luxury amenities, minimalist décor and mesmerizing views across the pine forests of Harads.

Something exciting was in build on the Pacific Coast in late 2005. It was a boom time for the yachting industry. Yards were at capacity, orders were flowing and the rush was on for bigger, faster, better. The Pacific Northwest had the lead on composite construction and was poised to give aluminum and steel builders a run for their money. At Delta Marine in Seattle, Washington, excitement was mounting over a 164foot, all-composite, ABS-classed project. When she slipped into the water in the summer of 2006, the industry celebrated the launch of HAPPY DAYS, Delta’s most innovative build at the time and the largest full-displacement composite yacht ever to launch in the Americas. For the next seven years, HAPPY DAYS cruised privately with her original owner before being sold to her new owners, who moved up from their 121-foot Moonen. Following an extensive interior refit, she was renamed VICTORIA DEL MAR and made her debut on the charter market in late 2014. Distinguished by her ice-blue hull and refined superstructure, VICTORIA DEL MAR’s profile gives only a subtle nod to her voluminous interior. With a gross tonnage of 750, her volume is significant and 7,500 square feet of interior space within a 34-foot beam meant that her refit design team, led by Claudette Bonville Associates, had more than enough working room. While no major changes were made to her bulkheads or layout during the refit, the bold, eclectic flair of the original interior was exchanged for a more refined décor. Taking cues from the style and furnishings of the late famed French designer Alberto Pinto — who was a fitting inspiration for the owners because of his “Haute Interior Design” and harmonious execution of grand spaces — the design team specified contemporary elegance and casual comfort throughout. Highlighting the expansive interior are thoughtful touches of exotic woods, leather finishes, soft maple wood flooring and the owner’s collection of original pop, surrealist and abstract art. From the zebra wood walls to the custom glass basins and tiling in the en-suites and dayheads, many key elements of the original interior were maintained and integrated seamlessly within the new décor. The original glass dining table remains a focal point of the main-deck dining area and seats twelve under an eight-foot blown glass lighting installation.

03

Although Delta had to adjust its tooling and extend its hull mold by length and width to build VICTORIA DEL MAR, the yacht’s size was maximized with an interior layout that has helped make her an extremely popular charter yacht. Comfortably sleeping 12 during a charter, her lower deck comprises four en-suite staterooms — two twins and two doubles. On her main deck, VICTORIA DEL MAR not only offers a full gym and massage room, but also two mirror VIP staterooms. Each VIP boasts walk-in dressing rooms, large bathrooms and generous eight-foot ceilings with skylights above the queen-size beds. Her full-beam master stateroom is situated aft on the bridge deck above and opens onto a semiprivate, enclosable aft deck with a dining area. Forward, the skylounge features a petrified wood-topped bar, games table and balconies with exterior seating to port and starboard. Once again the 34-foot beam is noticeable when considering VICTORIA DEL MAR’s sundeck, which offers alfresco dining for up to 18 guests. A large spa pool adjoined by sunpads is situated aft, while freestanding stainless steeland-teak furniture provides copious seating, sunning and lounging options.

04

The aft area can be protected by a sunshade and is easily transformed into an outdoor cinema in the evening thanks to the 100-inch double-sided HD movie screen. Uniquely, the deck also includes an air-conditioned bathroom with shower and a large, teak-topped bar with stools for eight. Equipped with a full complement of water toys and drones for on-water fun, VICTORIA DEL MAR balances her refined interior with a frivolous side. Below the waterline she features one of Delta’s first float-in tender garages and her 3512B Caterpillar engines deliver a comfortable, 15-knot cruising speed. With such a quality pedigree, it comes as little surprise that this 164-foot Delta debuted on the charter market to the same fanfare as a new build. Although her original owner may never had intended to charter, he certainly maximized her potential for just that. And her new owners, who enjoy cruising aboard themselves many weeks out of the year, are more than satisfied with space, comfort and amenities that this lady of the sea provides.

01 Voiles de Saint Barth Richard Mille honors this exciting race with its 60-01 Regatta Flyback Chronograph in competition colors; this timepiece is limited to 50 pieces. The principles and values of yachting reflect the master’s philosophy, which is based on a combination of extreme performance, cutting-edge technology and a clear artistic vision. Designed for competitive sailors, the watch has a countdown timer, patented locking crown and pushers and is able to indicate the compass points in both the northern and southern hemispheres. 02 Vanguard The choices are yours when it comes to the Vanguard from Franck Muller. Select between manual or automatic movement; titanium or 18-carat gold and stainless steel; and four variations: classic, chronograph, tourbillon and gravity tourbillon. Well suited for any yachtsman, this sporty timepiece comes with both an alligator strap and a rubber strap. 03 Piaget Altiplano The 140th anniversary of this iconic Maison was celebrated in 2014 with the launch of the avant-garde Altiplano 38 millimeter 900D. Revolutionary due to its ultra-thin record, the timepiece still holds its weight at 3.65-millimeter thick, the bold design is striking. The movement serves as the main plate for the 145 components of the caliber, but in order to create the slim statue, the case and movement are as one. This timepiece quite literally is the embodiment of Maison Piaget’s two manufacturers integrated.

Time and tide wait for no man. This selection of striking, elegant and artfully designed timepieces assure that you’re always timely. WORDS DOUG GOLLAN 03

04 DSTB (Dial Side True Beat) Designed to address the problem of determining longitude at sea, the DSTB is part of the Instrument Collection and, like every other model from Arnold & Son, features an in-house mechanical movement. The true beat seconds is a traditional complication of Arnold & Son, and this watch pays tribute to the watches produced by John Arnold during the second half of his career, when he and his son were the first to develop marine chronometers that could be produced in quantity at reasonable prices. It features exclusive Arnold & Son mechanical movement A&S6003, self-winding, solid 22-carat red gold guilloché oscillating weight, domed and white lacquered dial, sapphire dial and 18-carat white gold case, with a 43.5-millimeter diameter.

05 Amadeo Fleurier Braveheart Like all Fleurier collections from Bovet, the 45.20-millimeter Braveheart case comes with the patented Amadeo conversion into a reversible wristwatch (the back is shown), a table clock or pocket watch with the use of a single tool. The movement has 722 components. The timepiece’s balance wheel, balance spring and escapement all turn in one direction, while on the same axis, the reversed seconds wheel and the hand move in the opposite direction; together this creates a kaleidoscope-like effect. Functions include hours, minutes retrograde, double coaxial seconds on tourbillon and power-reserve indicator. 06 Patravi TravelTec New at Baselworld 2016, Carl F. Bucherer’s latest novelty is set with a deep matte black DLC coating and showcases three time zones. The self-winding watch is offered in two metals: stainless steel or rose gold; each with either silver or blue dials. The dial features a “Grand Tapisserie” pattern. 09 DB25 World Traveller De Bethune’s DB25 World Traveller reimagines how a second time zone can be presented along with a world time indicator. An almond-shaped button positioned at 8 o’clock allows you to set the world time, located in the center of the timepiece. The city display disc, decorated with concentric Microlight, utilizes a flexible, yet accurate system to move the disc by one-hour increments clockwise. The reference time zone or first time zone, is showcased with 24hour markers and seems to float in its channel. Using the crown, set it clockwise or counterclockwise. At 6 a.m. the crown pivots on itself to present a pink-gold daytime face; at 6 p.m. it again pivots to showcase a blue-steel nighttime façade. The second time zone, which indicates local time, is showcased by blue leaf-shape hands. A pulled-out crown to the second notch controls the hour hand and the minute hand is in reference to the hour.

10 François-Paul Journe When François-Paul Journe presented his first wristwatch at Baselworld in 1991 with a case of 38-millimeters in diameter, it was considered large. Paying tribute, this five-piece set includes the gold Tourbillon Souverain, which was made between 1999 and 2003 and was not produced in gold at the time, making it doubly exclusive; the Chronomètre à Résonance (2000 to 2009), in its original configuration with two symmetrical analog display dials; the emblematic Octa Automatique (2002 to 2014) timepiece, which is the first automatic watch made by F.P.Journe; the Octa Calendrier Annuel (2003 to 2014), the company’s automatic bestseller since its creation; and the Chronomètre Souverain (made since 2005). All watches in this collection are 38-millimeters. 11 Hourstriker Horse Ulysse Nardin encapsulates the strength and beauty of the horse with the Hourstriker Horse. A 28-piece collection is available in 18-karat rose gold or platinum. Each has handcarved Jaquemarts on a black onyx dial. Combining sound and motion, each gong strike elicits the synchronic movement of the horse Jaquemarts. 12 Neo-Tourbillon Girard-Perregaux engineers modified the plate, sand-blasted and black treated the Neo-Tourbillon with Three Bridges in order to direct perspective and light to the center of the timepiece, thus creating depth. Further contrast is created by three entwining light grey circles. The refined plate is shaped like a frame and is protected by a super-convex crystal. The case includes a bezel that highlights the very large tourbillon cage. Eighty components create the 14.44-millimeter-diameter part that fully rotates in a minute. Also completing the rotation is a balance spring adjusted by a set of gold screws, oscillating at three Hz through a spiral with a Phillips terminal curve.

Owners of the 164-foot (50m) luxury superyacht AMARULA SUN, Shon & Sharyn Craig purchased the 2007 Trinity just over two years ago, but their first foray into the world of yachts larger than 82 feet was a well-equipped 2011 130-foot (40m) Westport, which they purchased four years ago. They traded in the newly-built 2011 80 Hatteras for the Westport only eight months after delivery, realizing it was too big for use as a coastal boat. They then found themselves in a go-big-or-go-small predicament.

So, Shon and Sharyn decided to go big…and they haven’t looked back. They had always wanted to visit the coastal cities of the Mediterranean. They also decided to take on their first venture in the charter market. The Westport was a huge risk, but that risk paid off. They were able to, in only the first year, charter the yacht for 10 weeks and spend more than 60 days on board, visiting ports in Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Sardinia, Corsica and Greece.

The Craigs continued to use, and charter, their Westport in the Caribbean and The Bahamas for several seasons after. They weren’t exactly looking to move on from their Westport, but when the Trinity yacht, formerly MINE GAMES, went on the market, it came with an offer the Craigs couldn’t refuse. Since 2003, there have been 12 boats named AMARULA SUN, four of which — including the Trinity, a 41-foot Bahama, a 68-foot Princess and a 70-foot Viking — the Craigs currently own.

Shon is capable of and insured to operate boats 82-feet and smaller. He and Sharyn routinely operate the 68-foot Princess and the Bahama 41 on their own for extended cruises or just out to anchor. Annually, they compete in a half a dozen fishing tournaments around the Gulf Coast, East Coast and The Bahamas. This past season, they caught the largest blue marlin (605lbs) in the Bermuda Triple Crown.

In addition to visiting many countries in Europe, the Craigs have traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadine islands, Mexico, Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico and many other beautiful destinations. But their favorites are the BVIs and the Greek islands. They prefer spending the majority of their nights on anchor rather than staying in port; however, they have thoroughly enjoyed amazing and unique ports all over the world.

Shon and Sharyn are probably on the Trinity at least 10 weeks a year, in between charters, and have cruised much of the Caribbean, The Bahamas and the East Coast of the US. You could definitely classify these owners as “very determined boaters.” They love the water and are at home on the ocean. It’s not uncommon to find them out on the hook in a cove on the leeside of the Anclote Key island, which is located less than three miles from, and within sight of, their house — and they may stay out there for two or three days.

The 164-foot AMARULA SUN is the second yacht that the Craigs have put in a charter program and they have had great success, first in the Caribbean and then in the Med. Chartering has given them the opportunity to have the boat in a desired destination, semi-funded by the charterer.

The Craigs have a flexible schedule and usually are in a position to pick up and travel to the yacht when she doesn’t have a charter on board. They also enjoy the fact that a few charters a year keep the yacht from sitting in port for too long. This allows The Trinity AMARULA SUN has a special the yacht’s systems to remain active and appeal to the Craigs. Although Shon and the crew to keep well trained and sharp. Sharyn love to cook for themselves, having Shon says, “I guess you could say that I think a world-class chef on board provides for the boat and crew are better off active and a pleasant surprise at every meal. After a in use than sitting dormant at a slip in a great day of touring, watersports, exploring, marina. For those that can only use their socializing or just plain “hanging out,” boats 10 to 12 weeks a year, chartering 10 Shon and Sharyn relish their options: to 12 weeks a year is a perfect solution to to dress up for an elegant dinner at the whatever ails you.” artistically designed and decorated salon table, to have an intimate candlelight meal at the settee on the skydeck or to just throw on some pajamas and have dinner on the couch and watch a great movie in the skylounge. They turn in to the soothing sounds of the water lapping against the hull. Then, after sometime in the night or early morning when the captain has pulled anchor and motored to the next destination, they wake up to the sights and sounds of a new port, or a new island, and their amazing vacation continues.

OFFERING EQUAL MEASURES OF HISTORICAL CHARM & MODERN LUXURIES, THE BUSTLING CITY OF LONDON IS AN IDEAL WEEKEND DESTINATION WORDS RISA MERL

To quote a well-worn wisdom by Samuel Johnson, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” But with an ever-increasing range of diversions on offer in the English capital, it’s hard to imagine any man, or woman for that matter, facing boredom anytime soon.

Even simply walking around the city is a stimulating exercise, noticing how the beautiful old Victorian and Georgian architecture contrasts with the modern marvels of today’s skyscrapers. London is second only to Dubai in terms of interesting high-rise buildings, and the glass-like Shard that towers over the London Bridge London and luxury are practically synonymous. Beyond Quarter is the tallest building in Europe. With roots being the literal home of royalty, the city plays host to lavish dating back to Roman times, London is a place where hotels, high-end spas, haute shopping, private clubs and ancient and modern artfully combine. Walking along the fine dining. The rush of the tidal Thames brings water to the heart of the city, which expands out from its banks. The houses of Parliament, Big Ben’s tower and even the newer London Eye observation wheel take up residence on the river. While London is not a coastal city, it is far from land-locked, and superyachts can sail in and find suitable berths at St. Katharine Docks or along the Thames itself. There is perhaps no lovelier sight than a yacht cruising under the iconic Tower Bridge. Take time off the yacht to stay in London’s fabulous hotels. One of the finest five-star hotels is the Corinthia Hotel London, housed in a distinguished Victorian building that dates back to 1885. The 294-room hotel has 45 luxury suites and seven penthouses. The ultimate Royal Penthouse, set on the roof, spans two floors connected by private elevator and is the largest two-bedroom suite found in London. An adjacent butler’s kitchen and wine cellar make for easy entertaining in the private dining room for 10. When the weather allows for dining outdoors, the Corinthia has recently opened its new Garden Lounge, ideal for alfresco meals and late night drinks in the summer. The Signature Suites are uniquely designed by Hempel to be the “last word in romantic luxury” and feature super-sized king beds and high-end appointments. When it’s time for a tipple or nibble, London won’t disappoint. There was a time when English fine dining was a contradiction in terms. Today, London is one of the foodie capitals of the world, offering delectable fare in every genre and proving that British cuisine is as gourmet as any. 01 The Classic RIB With the versatility of a RIB and the good looks of a classic Italian Riviera launch, the Super 55 tender from UK builder Ocean 398 combines the best of both worlds. This boat is ready to take on any sea conditions, and will do it in style. Its hybrid looks are entirely new, but all at once familiar. Renowned yacht design firm Dubois Naval Architects collaborated on this cool craft. It is tough and sturdy like a rigid inflatable boat, yet striking with its teak and mahogany finishes. The handcrafted wood-and-composite tender can be customized to suit any yacht, with both the outer hypalon tubes and the supple leather interior available in multiple colors to mimic the mothership’s styling. The Super 55 has excellent handling and is powered by either twin 60hp or a single 115hp engine with inboard/ outboard options available. 02 Fun in Sun The eco-chic Luxi33 tender from Cantiere Savona uses the power of the sun to cruise in silence. This 33-foot tender features a hybridsolar power system, which marries a traditional diesel engine with an electric motor, solar panels and a battery bank for myriad power options. Run in silence like a sailboat, but with the comfort of a motor yacht in pure electric mode, reaching seven knots, or hit a top speed of 19 knots powered by the 170hp diesel engines while still only burning six gallons per hour. The hardtop is covered with solar panels, which capture the sun’s rays and pack the battery bank with 15 hours of charging time. The hybrid propulsion allows for emissions-free running, ensuring the Luxi33 can cruise protected anchorages. On trend, the Luxi33 is built with eco-friendly materials, giving it even more green credentials. Not only does Cantiere Savona work with renewable energy firms to create its eco-conscious crafts, the new company was born from crowd-funding — three young entrepreneurs got Cantiere Savona off the ground in 2010 by raising €380,000 from 44 investors.

03 Ride Without the Waves Never again will you be at the mercy of the waves to hang ten. Electric surfboards might be making the wave report obsolete. This new toy allows the rider to fly across the water and through the waves on its own steam. Onean has debuted a series of electric jet boards that range from beginner to pro level. The Carver, the Mantra and the Blade (which is still in development) are powered by integrated jet propulsion. In tests, Onean’s boards moved at a respectable 25mph, allowing you to ride like the wind even if the waves aren’t crashing. 04 Go Deep In build and ready to splash next fall is the first 1650/3 LP submersible from Triton Submarines. The LP stands for “low profile,” and with a height of less than six feet, this svelte sub is designed to slide right into a standard superyacht tender garage. Two passengers and a pilot can dive down to 1,650 feet under the waterline, gliding at a speed of three knots. The domed glass enclosure — which is air-conditioned for comfort — allows for incredible 360-degree visibility, while external LEDs light up the murky depths below. Thanks to Triton’s signature ballast tanks, the sub will stay buoyant at water level for passengers to easily board the sub much like they would a tender, simply stepping on from the yacht’s swim platform. The 1650/3 LP has all the bells and whistles of the sub builder’s popular Triton 3300/3 model, but with a lighter acrylic press hull mounted in a partial steel enclosure to save weight. The Triton 1650/3 LP weighs only 8,818 pounds and can be launched easily with the same overhead davit that’s used for the tenders, making this an easy addition to the toy box.

SUMMER SIPS SOUTH AMERICA IS A GARDEN OF EDEN FOR GRAPES. WORDS MARNIE OLD

No region on earth has geography more grape-friendly than South America. The Chilean valleys and Argentine plateaus that frame the Andes between the 25th and 40th parallels both feature unusually fruit-friendly weather patterns, but with significant differences that shape the distinctive flavors of their wines. Chile’s wine valleys are stacked along the coast like Jenga blocks, clustered around Santiago and the picturesque port of Valparaiso nearby. Cloud-free skies during the key months when grapes ripen magnify the positive influence of sunshine and evade the negative results of humidity and rain. With dueling cooling effects from the mountains and the sea, Chilean vintners excel at both white and red wine styles from a variety of noble grapes — not just Cabernet Sauvignon and red specialty Carménère, but Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc as well.

Driving up and over the mountains from Valparaiso, it takes less than six hours to reach the eastern flanks of the Andes that comprise Argentina’s wine country, but the growing conditions change dramatically from coastal valleys to arid high plains. Argentine vineyards stretch further north and south than those of Chile, but the vast majority of them fall within Mendoza Province and easy reach from its capital. Here vines require irrigation from seasonal rivers of meltwater in a climate that favors red grapes over white. Argentina’s top grape Malbec is perfectly suited, but other thick-skinned reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah thrive here as well.

Dominio del Plata ‘Nosotros’ Malbec Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza This voluptuous red is 100 percent Malbec from Susana Balbo, Argentina’s first female winemaker. It amply demonstrates what this grape can offer: layers of five-spice aromas in a wine as plush as a black velvet robe.

Vina Cobos ‘Corte uNico’ Cabernet Blend Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza California’s Paul Hobbs masterfully harnesses the raw power of Cabernet Sauvignon in this wine, whose fierce herbal-tannic edge is softened with roughly 20 percent Malbec.

Per Se ‘La Craie’ Malbec Blend Valle de Uco, Mendoza This hard-to-find bottling from an upstart vintner is turning heads with its poignant aromatics and refreshing finish, not to mention its quirky two-parts-Malbec-to-one-partCabernet-Franc blend.

Catena Zapata ‘Nicolás Catena Zapata’ Cabernet Blend Mendoza This spectacular flagship from one of the region’s leading lights is blended on multiple levels, not simply combining firm Cabernet Sauvignon and plump Malbec, but also the best fruit from three of Mendoza’s best sub-regions.

Achaval-Ferrer ‘Finca Altamira’ Malbec Valle de Uco, Mendoza Achaval-Ferrer is making some of Argentina’s most expressive single-vineyard Malbec, of which the most consistently balanced is Finca Altamira. It features both the red and black fruit dimensions of the grape entwined.

Bodega Chacra ‘Treinta y Dos’ Pinot Noir Rio Negro, Patagonia Pinot Noir lovers will rejoice to add Patagonia to their list of cool-climate sources for this finicky grape. Here, Bodega Chacra coaxes sublime purity of red berry flavors from 90-plusyear-old vines with little or no intrusion of oak flavors.

Almaviva Maipo Valley Chile’s answer to Opus One, Almaviva is the legendary Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s joint venture with Chile’s own Concha y Toro — the Bordeaux blend deftly balances power and grace.

Terrunyo ‘Carmín de Peumo’ Carménère Cachapoal Valley If Carménère is Chile’s most unique wine, made from a lost grape of Bordeaux resurrected here, then this is its finest expression. It offers the decadence of Merlot combined with the density of Errazuriz ‘Vinedo Chadwick’ Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon Aristos ‘Duquesa’ Maipo Valley Chardonnay This splurge-worthy wine pays homage to the Errazuriz family’s Cachapoal Valley A ravishing white rarely seen patriarch from a spectacular vineyard planted on his old polo outside Chile, it is made in the image of grand cru Burgundy pitch. 03

MONACO GP If you’ve ever wondered when “British racing green” came to be so named, it was in April 1929 when half-French, half-English daredevil, special agent and sports-car driver William GroverWilliams took his place on the second row of the grid in a dark green Bugatti Type 35B for the first Grand Prix around the streets of Monte Carlo. Entered as plain W Williams under the British flag, he completed the requisite 100 laps in three hours and 56 minutes to take the laurels ahead of fellow Bugatti driver Georges Bouriano, and thirdplacing Rudolf Caracciola — who had been widely tipped to win in his mighty Mercedes-Benz SSK. The thrilling sight of 16 cars being raced on narrow, winding streets before a glinting Mediterranean backdrop for a prize of 100,000 francs — put up by tobacco tycoon Anthony Nogars — took an already exciting spectator sport to an entirely new level, enabling the crowds to see, smell, hear and feel the action in a more intimate way than ever before.

Along with the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Monaco Grand Prix is one of the “must-see” races in the motorsport calendar. Despite the arrival of glitzy upstarts such as the nocturnal Singapore Grand Prix (also a waterside race), many Formula One fans still believe that Monte Carlo wins in the glamour stakes. Where else do F1 cars pass within feet of the shop fronts of Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Chanel and the like? But the Monaco Grand Prix of today is, of course, a rather different event from the one in which Grover-Williams competed. For a start, there are far fewer opportunities for overtaking these days, simply because modern F1 cars are so blindingly fast that appropriate passing gaps on the narrow streets come and go in the blink of an eye. Furthermore, Monaco Circuit was never designed to be a race track, meaning the opportunities to see the cars in action are relatively few and far between since no sooner have they emerged from behind one building than they disappear behind another or round a corner in the tiny principality that measures just three miles long by half as wide.

But the facts speak for themselves: Monaco was, is and probably always will be, the place that’s best associated with Formula One racing more than any other — and everyone who is anyone wants to be there during the month of May when the race takes place. There are, for example, few sounds to match an F1 car blasting through the famous tunnel at full chat, while the sight of the contenders slowing to crawling pace as they round the extremely tight Rascasse corner makes for an almost surreal moment in an otherwise lightning-paced event. Indeed, the kudos of simply being at Monaco is such that it has become an event beloved of corporates, with the biggest yachts and the finest hotels being booked well in advance (sometimes years ahead) in order to schmooze clients with the best experiences they could hope for.

01 The deafening sound of the cars reverberates off the buildings and hillside as Valtteri Bottas (Williams) blasts around the harbour, the spectacle enjoyed by the parties aboard the moored yachts 02 Jenson Button (McLaren), Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) and Valtteri Bottas (Williams) chase the pack up the hill at the start the 2015 Monaco GP 03 William Grover-Williams overtakes Philippe Etancelin in his Bugatti T35B on his way to winning the first Monaco GP in April 1929

N A V I G A T O R A U T O

But for those who want to attend privately in the best possible style, it’s probably wise to employ the services of a Monaco “fixer” who knows where to get you in, and how to get you in there. UK-based Halcyon Events, for example, is run by two former racing drivers — Chris Buncombe and Richard Williams — who have long-established connections in the F1 world, allowing them impressive behind-the-scenes access. Firms such as Halcyon will prepare full race weekend itineraries for clients that range from tours of the principality to visits to the team’s pit garages. They also will make restaurant reservations, arrange vehicle transfers (getting from point A to point B around the time of the race is decidedly problematic). The Monaco Grand Prix is, of course, more famous for its post-race partying than any other event on the motorsport calendar. Many regard the best event as being the Amber Lounge party, which takes place at the Meridian Beach hotel and is attended by many F1 drivers, team managers, supermodels and other VIPs. A table for eight guests can cost upwards of $25,000.

Perhaps one of the best ways to enjoy the race is by private yacht, as yacht tenders can easily cruise the port while the streets are tied up with racing. Northrop & Johnson’s charter brokers are readily available to assist you with chartering a yacht for this iconic event and, once on board, everything else is taken care of — from booking tables at the hottest parties (perhaps at the famous Rascasse restaurant, which is party central the night before race day) to creating a relaxing onboard spa day to recuperate from all of the fun. If, however, you prefer the idea of the slightly more relaxed and elegant pace of the Monaco Grand Prix as it used to be, don’t despair. It’s still possible to enjoy that, too, thanks to the existence of the biennial Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. Instigated in 1997 to capture a growing interest in historic motorsport, this race takes place a fortnight before the modern Grand Prix in order to take advantage of the circuit preparation and facilities. Organized by the prestigious Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM), it is attracting ever-larger spectators as the years go by. The 2016 edition will be the ninteenth, and will feature seven different races during the weekend of May 13 to 15 for nine different classes of car, ranging from pre-1939 ‘voiturettes’ to Formula One cars of the 1970s.

7 3

But make no mistake; this isn’t a slow-moving event for old crocks. Not only are the majority of cars taking part highly tuned, purpose-built racers, they often provide much more action than the “moderns” because they are considerably more difficult to handle than their 21st century contemporaries. Many of the drivers are former stars that are invited back to the circuit to compete and contribute to the classic atmosphere. As a result, the event invariably provides two days of action-packed racing on the legendary street circuit and is far more “spectator friendly” than the modern Grand Prix, which takes place two weeks later.

“Many people think the historic event is more entertaining than the modern race — you can get closer to the cars, visit the pits, mingle with the drivers and generally feel in touch with the atmosphere,” says Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, who was introduced to the event by his close friend Jacky Ickx, the celebrated, multi-Le Mans-winning racing driver.

One of the major sponsors of the “historic” is watch brand Chopard, which has had a presence at the event since 2004. For each occasion it creates a series of special Grand Prix de Monaco Historique wristwatches, one of which is awarded to each of the seven class winners with the remainder going on general sale.

If the celebrated image of Australian privateer Paul Hawkins crashing his Lotus into the Monaco Harbour during the 1965 Grand Prix is anything to go by, Ickx and Mrs. Scheufele are probably quite right.

04

“It was Jacky who connected us with the organizers, the Automobile Club de Monaco. I would love to take part one day, but neither he nor my wife will allow it,” says Scheufele whimsically. “They both think it’s too dangerous.”

01 ONE Southeby’s Riva will offer everything from marina slips to sunrise terraces 02 The Riva promises buyers open layouts and supreme views

As they say, home is where the heart is and no matter where you go, you can always go home. Well if you’re in the market for a new place to hang your hat, you’re in luck. These three sunny spots, The Ritz-Carlton Residences Sunny Isles Beach in Miami, Florida; ONE Sotheby’s Riva in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina in the British Virgin Islands, all make exceptional spots to nest. Fort Lauderdale is renowned not only for its beautiful, sunny beaches, but also for its status as an international yachting hub and host to the yachting industry’s largest annual event. But if you haven’t looked farther than the marina lately, it’s worth mentioning that Fort Lauderdale has grown into a luxury resort city with five-star everything at every turn.

With luxury homes and resorts blooming like wildflowers along the beaches and rivers, one exceptional property is developer Bradley Deckelbaum’s Riva, a real estate venture that began 18 months ago with the launch of 100 riverfront condos across from a park on Middle River. “Our buyers expect panoramic views and designs that flow from sunrise balconies to sunset terraces; they require outdoor living on 70-foot verandas and grilling from a summer kitchen that overlooks the beach,” says Deckelbaum. “What surprises them about this property is that true waterfront lifestyle — boat slips, a paddleboard and kayak dock and a private water taxi stop — is combined with very large (more than 2,000 square feet) and luxurious condos priced, on average, more than a million.”

03 The Ritz-Carlton Sunny Isles Beach’s impressive amenities is rivaled only by its stunning backdrop

90

N A V I G A T O R R E A L E S T A T E

As Riva’s construction ramps up toward the move-in date next season, new owners are anticipating the lap pool over the river, the two-story lounge and wine room, the gym, and the spa. A unique “cucina,” where owners host “everyone cooks” parties in a gourmet kitchen/dining room, also is garnering a great deal of buzz.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences will feature 212 residences, including 41 two-bedroom, 1,605-square-foot units; 40 twobedroom-plus-den, 1,750- square-foot units; 42 three-bedroom, 3,080-square-foot units, which also will have a den and service room or family room; 84 four-bedroom, 3,640-square-foot units, and 5 four-bedroom, 6,320-square-foot penthouses.

Sunny Isles Beach is as lovely as it sounds. This city offers beautiful beaches, perennial sunshine and close proximity to the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, each of which offer incredible shopping, dining and entertainment. Taking advantage of this prime location, the luxury real estate development teams Château Group and Fortune International Group have come together to bring The Ritz-Carlton Residences to Sunny Isles Beach.

The residences will have flowing floor plans providing Intracoastal, ocean or city views. The penthouses will feature 15-foot ceilings while all other units will have 10-foot ceilings. Select residences will have oversized terraces and private pools. Each residence will have a private elevator lobby, kitchens with Italian cabinetry by Snaidero, stone countertops, wine coolers, European appliances by Gaggenau, cappuccino makers and more. All master bedrooms will feature walk-in closets. All units will have laundry rooms with full-size washers and dryers. The units all are prewired for high-speed Internet and WiFi and smart-home technology. Select residences will feature service quarters.

Due for completion in 2018, the 2.2-acre Ritz-Carlton Residences will stand 52 stories high over 250 feet of beachfront property. Managed by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co., the property promises residents the same exceptional, five-star service synonymous with The Ritz-Carlton® name. The Residences were designed by Arquitectonica, a revered architecture firm that has created a unique and impressive design. Italian designer Michele Bönan has added his stylistic touch to the interiors.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences also has a host of impressive amenities for residents, including private beach cabanas, chaise lounges and umbrellas; pool, beach and in-room dining service; a children’s club with indoor and outdoor play areas; three pool deck areas: the east deck pool, the main pool, with direct access to the beach, and the west deck, which has a lap pool, two hot tubs and an outdoor massage space; and an oceanfront fitness and wellness center with sauna and steam rooms and dedicated treatment areas.

Once known primarily for nightlife and a vibrant club scene, Spain’s golden isles have evolved to be among Europe’s most glamorous holiday hot spots of today, attracting well-heeled travelers come to enjoy the long hours of sunshine and world-class hip hangouts. Charter in spring or enjoy a summer that lasts right through to late October. Mallorca Island life here is about lazy lunches, diving off deck in secret coves, ambling through vineyards, losing yourself in a maze of ancient streets, taking a leisurely coffee in the town square after dinner and then finding yourself at the latest club should the mood strike. Discover @ Mercat de l’Olivar This famous food market displays stalls packed with fresh meats, fish, fruit and vegetables. Cheese, olives, almonds, pastries and all manner of other tasty treats also will prove irresistible. Shop @ La Lonja in the old town of Palma Wander around Palma’s maze of cobbled streets to encounter designer boutiques and shops packed with local ceramics, textiles, jewelry and antiques alongside traditional tavernas and tapas bars.

Culture @ Valldemossa At the historic village of Valldemossa, you can visit the former Carthusian monastery where Chopin composed some of his most renowned preludes. Explore @ Artá Artá, in the northeast of the island, lies beneath a small mountain crowned by the walled 14th century Sanctuary of Sant Salvador. One of the island’s most impressive sights, the Sanctuary’s lofty position means it also offers wonderful views of the whole island. Dine @ Simply Fosh Lovers of gourmet food will find a generous helping of Michelin-starred restaurants on Mallorca. High on your list should be Simply Fosh. British chef Marc Fosh creates superlative Mediterranean dishes using local produce in the rustic setting of the 17th century Hotel Convent de la Missió in the old town of Palma. Es Racó d’es Teix is another cozy spot for a romantic lunch with spectacular views of the town of Deià. At Lua in Port de Soller you can literally step from yacht to table and dine on locally-caught fish; ditto at Flanigan in Portals, a stone’s throw from the quay, or the Sea Club at Cap Rocat, which offers the bonus of a view over your yacht at anchor in the cove below with the city of Palma as a backdrop. For the best of creative and modern Majorcan cuisine, head to Tomeu Caldentey’s Es Moli d’en Bou. In Palma, both La Boveda and Tast Club are wonderful for tapas, and Caballito de Mar is perfect for seafood.

Spa @ La Residencia If all that food and drink means you need a detox day, head to the spa at the Hotel Belmond La Residencia in Deià. Formerly a collection of four mansions, the hotel sits on 30 acres of olive and lemon groves in the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains with views of the Mediterranean. The spa offers outdoor massage areas and a huge array of treatments in a spectacular setting. Dance @ Garito Café In the 70s Garito Café attracted avant-garde writers and bohemian artist types, today it retains its retro character as a fun place for anyone to while away an evening — or visit for lunch and a lazy afternoon. The lounge bar Opio in the Puro Hotel is as cool as it gets, while the terrace on the sea at Varadero is open all day and turns into a pulsing club scene after the sun sets. You don’t have to wait until the sun goes down for the tunes to blast out at Nikki Beach. Along with Pacha Mallorca, a cool beach club remains that one of the most fashionable places to hang out in Mallorca. Anchor @ Na Foradada This is one of the most enchanting anchorages in the Mediterranean, particularly at sunset when the wild and untouched Tramuntana Mountains are illuminated.

04

Spend the Day @ Sa Dragonera Just to the west of Mallorca is the island of Sa Dragonera which, in 1995, was declared a National Park. You can sail there via authorized boats from Sant Elm. Sant Elm itself is worth a visit in its own right. Located on the Andratx coast, it has a sandy beach where you can relax before a late lunch at one of the fish restaurants on the jetty followed by a walk up a maquis-carpeted cliff to the abandoned Trappist monastery Sa Trapa to take in the view.

01 The charming trams of Port de Sollar

Berth @ Port Adriano Designed by Philippe Starck, Porto Adriano has berths for yachts of up to 600-meters and is very peaceful. Alternatively, the Club de Mar marina is wonderfully situated in central Palma. The marina has ample facilities along with 75 berths for superyachts ranging from 30 to 155 meters.

03 La Residencia – magnificent hotel, magnificent spa

02 The Balearics have a number of beautifully ancient Citadels like historic village of Valldemossa

04 Llombards cove – one of many beautiful spots to moor throughout the islands

SINCE THE 60S HIPPIES & FREE SPIRITS HAVE FLOCKED TO THIS ISLAND TO ENJOY AN ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE & SOAK UP THE SUN

N A V I G A T O R S P O T O N

Ibiza There is a deep-rooted counter culture to the class-A hedonism found on the beautiful island of Ibiza. Since the 1960s hippies and free spirits have flocked to this island to enjoy an alternative lifestyle and soak up the sun. Anchor @ Benirrás at Sant Joan Anchor just inside the cliff walls of the bay and snorkel and swim in the shallows before stepping ashore for a walk in the hills. Culture @ Equus Gallery The recently-opened Equus Gallery displays world-class contemporary art from international artists. Go Ashore @ Dalt Vila The medieval part of Ibiza’s old town, Dalt Vila features an imposing castle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and a 14th century cathedral at its summit. Be Seen @ Lío The restaurant and club Lío has taken over from the 1990s place to be, Café del Mar. Part of the superyacht scene in Ibiza’s old town, Lio is owned by the people behind the nightclub franchise Pacha, but is aimed more at the yachting set than the clubbing crowd.

Dine @ Heart El Bulli duo Ferran and Albert Adrià teamed up with Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté to launch Heart last summer at the Ibiza Gran Hotel. The creative experience fuses gastronomy, live performance art and performances from world-renowned musicians into a unique experience for the audience. Located in the same complex as Cipriani and handy for the Cavalli restaurant in Marina Ibiza, it has instantly become the place to see and be seen in Ibiza. Shop @ reVOLVER and Circa Ibiza The Ibiza Town boutique reVOLVER is the place to head for covetable sunglasses, while Circa Ibiza is full of reworked vintage trinkets and charms that have been turned into pretty, modern pieces. Berth @ Marina Ibiza Offering berths up to 60 meters and options for larger yachts, Marina Ibiza is located in the heart of the historic Ibiza Town. Divided into separate areas, the two docks are surrounded by shops, restaurants and chandlers.
