‘AS I SIT HERE IN

HEATHROW AIRPORT EN ROUTE TO ANTIBES, I CAN’T HELP THINKING ABOUT HOW FAST TIME GOES….

Clients from more than 30 years ago are now dear friends; yachts, crew, things that have changed significantly over the years. But my love of family, friends and yachting remains constant. Our son graduated from high school in June and is heading to college this fall. As late bloomers, Mariette and I fully appreciate having watched many friends travel this road before us. However, you are never quite prepared for your child to head off. As we have only one child, we are very reluctant to let go. We have researched going back to school and finding a dorm near Matthew, but practicality and my grades don’t make this idea so practical! So time marches on.... This summer, I actually made good on what I preach about — the fantastic ability of yachts to bring together family and friends. Matthew had a wonderful group of friends visit us in Newport and we were able to take them out on a yacht. Everyone loved it! We had a semi-captive audience (they too soon figured out how to take the tender ashore to go shopping); we all relaxed and enjoyed the Newport Folk Festival from a premier location.

I also had the pleasure of visiting Rose and Leo, dear friends and clients, aboard their spectacular yacht. For them, yachting truly is a family affair. With their evergrowing family, it offers premium quality time to focus on their gaggle of kids in a very safe and happy environment. Their yacht has become a meeting place for the entire family. As I finish this introduction to another spectacular issue of the Navigator, I now CEO comment has been brewing for a while. The Côte d’Azur is as beautiful, enticing and alluring, as it should be. It made good on its promises of warm, inviting water, blue skies, salt air and a sea filled with people, small sailboats and lovely yachts. This amazing scene typifies what you hope for in the South of France. And as I look out over the stunning seascape, I am reminded of why I got into the business in the first place, for family, for friends and for passion. And so time may continue to move on, but much like the South of France’s reputation for seaside serenity, some things will change, while others always remain the same.

Before I sign off, I would like to thank our contributors for helping us to create this masterpiece, our strategic global partners (Arnold & Son, Aston Martin, Casillero del Diablo, Chai Rum, Goldfinch Pianos and Marsh Insurance) for enhancing our clients’ lives, the Northrop & Johnson team for working hard to ensure that our clients receive the best possible service and enjoy all facets of their yachting investment and, of course, our wonderful clients for making this all possible. Please enjoy this issue. We all look forward to seeing you at the upcoming boat shows this fall and winter. Carpe diem!

Kevin Merrigan, President & CEO

01 Northrop & Johnson Partners With Chai Rum Northrop & Johnson has entered a new global strategic partnership with luxury spirits brand AKAL Chai Rum. The Akal family migrated to the West Indies from India four generations ago, bringing with them the country’s highly regarded tea. After generations of a lifestyle associated with tea and the Caribbean, the family house recognized the opportunity to forge the world’s first and only Chai Rum, an entirely new category of luxury rum. Bridging more than 400 years of history, AKAL Chai Rum’s sprawling tale unites the 17th century India of the East with the Caribbean of the West. The result of a chance meeting upon the oceans, it is the improbable marriage of the delicate and complex tea plant with the robust sugarcane grass. Encompassing more than fifteen exotic flowers and botanicals through a secret method, Chai Rum transforms what was once regarded as simple and sweet into something complex and utterly sophisticated. Rum has finally come of age. This sophisticated sipping product is best enjoyed neat. It may be served in a brandy snifter either warmed or at room temperature or in a double old fashioned, with a large block of ice. “The partnership with Chai Rum seems like a natural one,” said Northrop & Johnson COO Daniel Ziriakus. “Rum has an inherent maritime tradition; as does Northrop & Johnson. This type of high-end, upscale rum is perfect for the yachting lifestyle. It is exceptionally well suited for sipping on the aft deck during a charter or enjoying during a meal on board your yacht with family and friends. We are thrilled to welcome AKAL Chai Rum as a global strategic partner and to offer the product to our clients and friends at all of Northrop & Johnson’s international yachting and luxury events around the world.” 02 Best Asia-based Charter Company For the second year in a row, Northrop & Johnson was named “Best Asia-based Charter Company” at the 2016 Asia Boating Awards. The Asia Boating Awards were created in 2005 by China Boating and Asia-Pacific Boating magazines to recognize the best of the marine industry in Asia and around the world. Now in its 12th year, this award ceremony is viewed as a benchmark for the industry in the Asia-Pacific region. Held at the ONE°15 Marina Club in Singapore, the 2016 event was brimming with VIPs, ultra highnet-worth individuals, and members of the yachting industry. “We were pleasantly surprised to win this award for a second year in a row,” says Charter Broker Lies Sol. “We are happy to be recognized as the foremost brokerage for luxury charter in Asia and elsewhere.” “Northrop & Johnson is the only international charter company with a ground presence throughout the Asia region; it now extends all the way to Australia,” adds Charter Broker Sytske Kimman. “Asia is ripe for charter. It offers an abundance of exotic cultures and adventure around nearly every turn; there is so much to see and do in this region and more owners are bringing their yachts over.”

03 Northrop & Johnson Charter Director Fiona Maureso named MYBA President Northrop & Johnson Charter Director Fiona Maureso was elected to her second term as MYBA President. Launched in 1984 by a small group of brokers based in the South of France, the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) was initially founded to address the issue of multiple contracts that were being used in the sale and purchase of yachts at that time. Pooling their knowledge and experience, these brokers produced a standardized Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in plain English that not only would be adopted by all brokers but also could be easily understood by clients. The first President of MYBA was Kees Van Vliet, who was at the time the president of Northrop & Johnson’s office in Cannes. Northrop & Johnson has been a loyal and active supporter of the Association since its inception.

Following the success of the MOA, work subsequently began on the MYBA Charter Agreement, which also has become a tried-andtested industry standard document. Throughout its lifespan, the Association has continued to grow. In 2008, it officially changed its name to MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association, which more accurately reflects its international reach and membership base. The Association now not only includes sales brokers, charter managers and charter brokers, but also yacht managers.

02

Today, MYBA numbers 120 companies worldwide and is the largest association of its kind. Its mission is to guide its members on the highest ethical and technical standards and to safeguard the best interests of the superyacht industry as a whole. It has adopted an increasingly influential and significant role, working closely with both national and international bodies to lobby and advise on policies affecting all aspects of the large crewed yacht sector, and it is regularly consulted on various fiscal and legal issues facing the industry. It employs an administrative staff of five, as well as several specialist consultants.

NOW IN HER SECOND TERM, FIONA’S MISSION IS TO REACH OUT TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF YACHTING PROFESSIONALS & TO WORK MORE CLOSELY WITH OTHER INDUSTRY ORGANIZATIONS

Now in her second term, Fiona’s mission is two-fold. First, to reach out to the next generation of yachting professionals and safeguard MYBA’s standard of ethics and professionalism going forward; second, to work more closely with other industry organizations to ensure that yachting remains safe and enjoyable for our clients. Membership of MYBA is governed by strict entry requirements, including proof of significant Professional Indemnity insurance coverage and a proven track record of professional excellence. By working with a MYBA member company like Northrop & Johnson, clients can benefit from verifiable safeguards and are assured of being represented by experienced professionals.

02 Palm Beach International Boat Show 2016 The Intracoastal Waterway along the banks of West Palm Beach, Florida, was hull-tohull with impressive superyachts during the 2016 Palm Beach International Boat Show. Northrop & Johnson hosted guests, clients and strategic partners at our stand in our new location off D Dock near the VIP entrance. As one of the biggest in-water superyacht exhibitors, Northrop & Johnson had 12 brokerage yachts in the show. Also on display at the Northrop & Johnson stand was Goldfinch’s latest creation: the Sygnet — the world’s smallest baby grand piano created specifically for yachts.

05 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show As the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) wrapped, Northrop & Johnson Australia reflected on the busy show that demonstrated Australia is at a tipping point. SCIBS represented the first Australian show for the international brokerage since its move into the Australian market in February 2016. Northrop & Johnson had two charter yachts and one brokerage yacht in the show and welcomed clients and guests to its Waterscape stand and on board its yachts for cocktail events, all of which were extremely well received. “We’ve seen very positive growth in the Australian charter industry in recent years, which is now reflected by an increase in inquiries for buyers looking to have their own yachts run as commercial entities,” said Northrop & Johnson Australia Managing Director Cameron Bray.

01 Thailand Yacht Show 2016 The first edition of the Thailand Yacht Show took place in Phuket in 2016. The event was held in the Ao Po Grand Marina and experienced an unexpectedly high turnout of superyachts. During the show, Northrop & Johnson sat on a panel of industry leaders regarding the discussion on the status of the superyacht charter licenses. The show itself very much was “business as usual” with dealers and brokers unanimously expressing satisfaction with the way the event unfolded. Northrop & Johnson was pleased with the success of the first edition of the Thailand Yacht Show.

03 2016 MYBA Charter Show Genoa The MYBA Charter Show is the most important display of charter yachts in the Mediterranean and 2016’s edition, again hosted in Genoa, Italy, was universally recognized to be the best yet. Almost all 58 yachts in the show were either new to the charter market or newly refitted, so, with only four days to inspect them, Northrop & Johnson’s charter brokers had their work cut out. The MYBA Charter Show is an opportunity for Northrop & Johnson charter brokers to not only inspect yachts on behalf of clients, but also to bring themselves up to speed on changes within the industry or new cruising destinations. The 2016 seminars focused on revisions to the MYBA Charter Agreement and on Cuba and Norway as up-andcoming summer destinations. 04 Palma Superyacht Show 2016 The 2016 edition of the Palma Superyacht Show had an electric buzz. Despite poor weather, serious buyers were not deterred. Northrop & Johnson had a strong presence at the show; all Northrop & Johnson yachts on display consistently received positive attention from serious buyers. “The Palma Superyacht Show, despite being only in its fourth year, was again a great success,” said Northrop & Johnson Palma Managing Director Simon J. Turner. “It is slowly growing in size and popularity — not only in the number of visitors, but also with regard to the number of yachts on display and the on-shore exhibitors.”

NORTHROP & JOHNSON’S TALENTED & EXPERIENCED BROKERS SHARE THEIR BEST AUSTRALIA CHARTERERS....

“My advice for first-time charterers is to pack your cameras and be ready for a once-on-a-lifetime holiday. Australia is such a large country (in fact, it’s almost the same size as the U.S.), so it’s diverse in its offerings. We can customize an experience unlike any other. I recommend Sydney Harbour for New Year’s Eve — it’s rapidly becoming a bucket-list item for yacht charters. Imagine 90-degree days in the world’s most amazing Harbour; then, as the sun sets behind the iconic Harbour Bridge, the city comes to life with fireworks that are second only to Times Square. Your yacht charter in Sydney is combined with amazing experiences such as beautiful waterfront restaurants, wine bars, nightclubs, casinos, shopping, surfing lessons in Bondi Beach, a Harbour Bridge climb and sea plane flights, to name a few. Be sure to talk to your charter broker about what you want from your yacht charter experience.” Cameron Bray Managing Director Australia

“Don’t book your return flights — have an open-ended ticket. Australia is home to some of the most diverse countryside, untouched cruising grounds and unique experiences in the world. From a vast variety of beaches to unique wildlife to cultural diversity, Australia has something for everyone. The Great Barrier Reef is a great place to start an Australia experience. From the pristine beaches and coastline to the abundant coral and wildlife, you honestly could spend hours in the natural beauty. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is one of the most awe-inspiring destinations not just in Australia, in the world. The sheer size and cultural history will be enough to keep you wanting more. In my opinion Australia is one of the most magical places on earth. We do have more kangaroos than people — that’s all part of the ‘Australian Experience!’” Crystal Corrin Charter Broker

“I’d love to show you my backyard. If you’re heading Down Under, you need to pack your sense of adventure, your thongs (flip flops) and budgie smugglers! Uniquely Aussie, The Kimberley is untamed, yet one of the most stunning regions in the Southern Hemisphere. If it’s adventure you seek, then you are in for a wild ride as Oz’s waters are famous for abundant wildlife. For those who enjoy the finer things, sit back and relax on the aft deck to witness awe-inspiring outback landscapes and limestone cliffs while sipping Champagne. Why not take the helicopter to a secluded spot? The pilot will pack the lavish picnic, of course! Other things that may float your boat: the captain can maneuver right under waterfalls or take the tender ashore for a hike, to explore the bush and to check out indigenous rock art.” Andrea Guerin Charter Broker

What is your best advice to a first-time yacht buyer? Do your homework and take advantage of the resources available to you. In addition to all of the information available on the Internet, your broker and the surveyors that you hire have years of experience; they will be more than willing to share this knowledge with you. Use all the tools and information available to help you make the best and most-informed decisions for you and your family.

What, in your opinion, are the biggest trends happening in yacht design? The technological advancements in glass are dramatically changing the way superyachts look. Feadship has blazed the trail with recent projects like VENUS, MUSASHI and COMO. I expect this trend to grow as shipyards continue to learn about and develop glass technology. I think we can anticipate large pieces of glass utilized as structural elements of yachts. There have been some interesting refits throughout the last few years — it will be exciting when those boats eventually come to the market.

SPOTLIGHT TODD RITTENHOUSE Q What is your background within the yachting industry and how did you come to be a yacht broker? A At a young age, I learned to sail from my father, who is an avid sailor and secondgeneration merchant mariner. When I was 19, I got a job as deckhand on a 1928 65-foot staysail schooner. That experience got me hooked on the ocean and I decided to attend the California Maritime Academy where I earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Marine Transportation; I also received an unlimited tonnage Coast Guard license.

After several years of commercial shipping I was given the opportunity to get back into yachting as a broker at Ardell. I spent more than 10 years with the company before joining Northrop & Johnson. I helped open Northrop & Johnson’s Newport Beach office.

Situated on Sydney Harbour’s eastern bank, Catalina (O1) perches on the waterfront of an Australian landmark, Rose Bay. In 1957, on the site of the country’s first airport, the restaurant was built as Caprice. This hot 1950s nightclub was a favorite of Sydney-siders for decades. Owners Michael and Judy McMahon acquired the restaurant in 1994 and renamed it Catalina, after the flying boats that ‘ruled the skies’ of Rose Bay in the late 1930s. After renovations, the space now offers patrons sweeping views of the Harbour at water level and an expanded outdoor bar, but the McMahons were careful to keep the restaurant’s original atmosphere (O3).

DOCK DINE

Catalina is now synonymous with Sydney-style fine dining. Its culinary team certainly has the creds to back up the hype. Executive Chef Mark Axisa started at the restaurant as a cookery apprentice and during the course of 12 years moved through the ranks to his current role as executive chef, which he accepted in 2015. He has a sincere passion for creating new and exciting dishes. Head Chef Alan O’Keeffe studied hospitality and tourism in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland, and completed his cookery apprenticeship at the five-star Merrion Hotel. He then joined the Catalina team and has spent the last seven years creating Catalina’s delectable dishes with his signature flair for traditional French cuisine. Head Pastry Chef Berny Osorio is known for her seasonal, modern desserts that pay homage to tradition. Her favorite recommendation is the caramelized fig with bitter caramel mousse, brik pastry and sugared pistachio. Head Sommelier Andrew de Vries trained at Catalina for many years, becoming assistant Sommelier in 2011. He has personally cultivated Catalina’s exceptional wine list, which includes more than 800 Old and New World wines. From 2008 to present, the list has received a three goblets rating (the highest possible) in Australia’s Wine list awards.

03

CATALINA WORDS JANINE ST.DENIS

And what’s on the menu at Catalina? For starters, enjoy the Sydney rock oysters with lime, chilli and tobiko (O4). The housesmoked salmon with Persian feta on toasted sourdough, Jamon Iberico with tomato bruschetta, and selections from the cheese lists also are must-try items. From grass-fed beef tenderloin to roasted suckling pig, the list of mains will have your mouth watering. Let’s not forget about the cocktails. Catalina recently introduced an all new bar menu. The succulent sips include lychee and mango martinis, peach Bellinis, passion fruit margaritas and of course a classic or two, cue the Pimms and Champagne. The sun-soaked bar is the perfect place to enjoy cocktails before your meal, or after…or both (O2).

Catalina is open seven days a week. Lunch service begins at noon and dinner service begins at 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Catalina’s kitchen stays open late — it’s one of the few spots in Sydney offering this. The restaurant does take reservations. If you fancy, you can reach Catalina by ferry. SOVEREIGN has benefitted from two very conscientious owners. Her first, the creator and builder of SOVEREIGN, made sure the project included every skillset and opportunity to be successful. An experienced yachtsman, he did extensive research to locate the best designers, surveyors and shipyard to demonstrate American yacht building capabilities. The cost and time of her build were secondary to her quality, which was the top priority. Her second owner pushed even further to create a state-of-the-art yacht. SOVEREIGN also benefits from ongoing, regularly scheduled surveys by Patton Marine, her meticulous and experienced captain, engineer and crew, and an owner who demands, appreciates and funds only the best. Measuring in at 1,100 gross tons, SOVEREIGN has more volume than many 60-meter yachts. This kind of interior space means more than 8,000 square feet of exceptional living area. The incomparable roominess is most notable in the panoramic skylounge where the vaulted ceiling soars nearly 10 feet high. SOVEREIGN’s interior features exquisitely detailed woodwork complemented by warm marble surfaces, elevator access to all floors, a very large tender garage that becomes a beach club and gym, and multiple salons. The exterior’s aggressive profile and large deck spaces also are notable; as is the large infinity-edge Jacuzzi/pool on the sundeck.

With a 34-foot beam and 10-foot draft, accompanied by her four-fin Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers, SOVEREIGN provides an exceptionally stable and comfortable ride in almost any ocean. She is ready to explore destinations around the world and will rarely be restricted by weather and sea conditions. Built according to the rules of the American Bureau of Shipping and MCA compliance of the large yacht commercial code, SOVEREIGN’s design, engineering and equipment is top quality from bow to stern. After launch, SOVEREIGN was recognized as a finalist for Best Displacement Yacht at the 2012 World Superyacht Awards; she also was a finalist in the Naval Architecture category at the ShowBoats Design Awards in 2012. Designed to carry an owner’s party of up to 16 with six owner and guest staterooms, the accommodations on board are anything but ordinary. SOVEREIGN offers two master staterooms, one on the upper deck with 270-degree views and another full-beam stateroom on the main deck with incredible views through eight large oval windows. Below deck there are four guest staterooms, consisting of two spacious VIP suites with king beds and two guestrooms offering the flexibility of full, twin and Pullman berths. The crew accommodations sleep up to 14 in seven cabins.

On the lower deck, in addition to the four guest staterooms, is an oversized beach club/gym/tender garage in the lazarette with access via a transom door. This area has an overheadmounted davit for tender transfer, room for several tenders and Jet Skis, a main machinery space and additional work areas. It also doubles as a beach club/gym when needed and has lots of room for water and beach toys. When you enter the yacht’s main aft deck you will find a large seating area with multiple tables and settees, well suited for entertaining groups of varying sizes based on the changeable configuration. Through the main aft doors and past the marbled foyer is an expansive main salon and separate dining area, which conveniently resides next to the main-deck pantry and ship’s galley. The forward part of this deck is home to one of the two master staterooms. Amidships you will find the large open stairwell next to the elevator, which accesses all other interior decks. The elevator does not directly access the sundeck, allowing for a sleeker, more private area. Elevator access is available down to the tank deck for crew. The upper deck has a panoramic skylounge featuring nearly 10 feet of headroom at the center. This salon is double the size of the main salon and serves as the primary social area of the yacht. It features incredible views, a large wet bar, a nearby service pantry and quick access to the upper aft deck. The upper aft deck has a large, circular alfresco dining table for elegant outdoor dining. Aft of the table are several large and private lounges and tables. All the way forward on this deck is the second master stateroom; the captain’s cabin is located nearby the bridge. The ship’s bridge is one level up in transition to the incredible sundeck, which has inviting spaces for socializing, including bar chairs, a massive elevated forward observation deck with space for sunning, a day head, an outdoor shower, a full service wet bar, a 46-inch Sunbrite TV and a beautifully tiled, oversized infinity-edge pool/Jacuzzi. The Jacuzzi and bar area are protected from the sun by a hard top. There also is a davit on this deck if a commercial MCA tender becomes necessary for future use.

02 Ritz Paris After nearly three years, the Ritz Paris is re-opening its doors. Once home to the likes of Coco Chanel and Ernest Hemingway, frequented by Marcel Proust and a preferred dinner spot of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed, the hotel certainly has history. Now, it sports a fresh veneer. The renovation of this iconic palace hotel in the heart of Place Vendome saw a reduction in keys from 159 to 142. The Ritz now has 71 rooms and 71 suites for guests to rest their heads. Of the 71 suites, 15 feature iconic namesakes due to their historical relevance; these include Chopin, Chaplin, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Ritz and Proust.Two-level “townhouse” style suites, which are categorized as junior or deluxe, feature garden views and rooftop promenades. Still gilded in traditional Parisian décor, the suites offer modern technology, advanced, stylish lighting and other upgrades.

02 The Ritz Paris offers preeminent Parisian flair

01 The Four Seasons Maui Resort The Four Seasons Maui Resort is upping the ante. In late 2016, the resort will unveil its “hotel within a hotel” concept. This will provide more services and amenities to its suites, including its two new presidential suites, which each offer a bespoke experience. One of the most unique facets: when you book these suites, you’re provided with a personal assistant. Shermaine is a longstanding team member who will take care of your every need.

03 Six Senses Seychelles is pure paradise

On call 24-7, Shermaine and her backup team are able to create an unforgettable experience for guests. The suites themselves are nothing to overlook. At 4,500 square feet, the Lokelani Presidential three-bedroom suite is able to accommodate up to eight adults or six adults and six children. Enjoy incredible 180-degree oceanfront views overlooking a private garden. A 2,400-square-foot private terrace has alfresco lounge and dining space and leads to the garden, complete with a fire pit and sun loungers. This space is ideally suited for intimate celebrations.

Located on the seventh floor, the Maile Presidential three-bedroom suite also offers incredible 180-degree views through floorto-ceiling windows and from its expansive terrace. Accommodating six adults or six adults and five children, this 4,000-squarefoot suite, plus veranda, is exceptional. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom; the master has a full-size sauna.

Also new is the four-Michelin star L’Espadon restaurant by Executive Chef Nicolas Sale. If it’s too hot in the kitchen, check out the hotel’s new swimming pool at The Ritz Club, which also has a new fitness center, Turkish bath and sauna. When it’s cocktail time, Salon Proust and Bars Ritz, Hemingway and Vendome (which is found under a retractable glass roof) all are available.

03 Six Senses Seychelles Félicité Island in the Seychelles will be the next home of a Six Senses luxury resort. Outfitted with a spectacular four-bedroom villa, this private island is an ultimate escapist destination. The villa’s master bedroom features floor-to-ceiling windows affording unfettered views of pure paradise as well as a private, 250-square-foot pool. The master is located on the upper floor; all subsequent bedrooms are located on the main floor. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. Just off the living room is a large terrace with an infinity pool. In addition to this luxury accommodation, Félicité Island is home to some exceptional activities. Year round, it is an ideal place for diving and fishing; October to June are best for snorkeling and sailing. Bird lovers will enjoy the annual migration in October. 10 Kalpa Piccola & Kalpa Donna Anniversaire Parmigiani Fleurier celebrates 20 years of watch creation with a gold quartz movement inside a steel case. Adorned with engraved mother of pearl, the dials of the Kalpa Piccola and Kalpa Donna Anniversaire watches are exquisite. The subtle detailing is reminiscent of silken fabric. The watches are available in four color schemes: mandarin orange dial with red leather strap, white dial and ivory leather strap, lilac dial and white leather strap and Tahitian mother-ofpearl dial and étoupe leather strap. Each is limited to only 96 pieces.

08 Memoris Louis Moinet created the world’s first educational chronograph — the Memoris. Both mechanical and amusing, the timepiece showcases all of its chronograph moments on the dial side, which allows the viewer to understand how the movement works. With a simple touch to the monopusher, the mechanics come alive. The movement’s hand-decorated parts are set against a starry backdrop, creating a unique and stunning aesthetic.

11 DDF 12-44-SQ DDF12 -44-SQ is the latest piece inspired by French racing watchmaker BRM. The case is machined in bars of titanium. The technical skill used when creating the timepiece is evidenced by the 18 different components utilized. This model features a titanium case with a skeleton dial and sapphire front and back with red, orange, black or white hands. Other colors are available through special order.

09 UTTE Skeleton Thin is in with Arnold & Son’s new UTTE Skeleton, the thinnest skeleton tourbillon watch available. Powered by the new A&S8220 movement, the UTTE Skeleton is a completely in-house creation of the manufacture. It measures in at a slender 8.34 millimeters. In order to achieve this slight frame, the designers were tasked with reengineering the movement from scratch. The redgold 5N case has a circumference of 42 millimeters.

09

12 H4 Alinghi HYT has released the completely skeletonized H4 Alinghi. Complete with a lighting feature — two LEDs are hidden under the rider at six o’clock — the dial can be illuminated with white light. It is powered by an invisible generator located between four and five o’clock and can be turned on with a button located on the opposite side of the case. This timepiece features a 65-hour power reserve.

01 The stunning “rock ’n’ roll” chic interior of KING BABY

01

The 140-foot (42.7m) IAG luxury motor yacht KING BABY is not the owners’ first foray into the boating world, but it is their largest vessel to date. Launched in June 2015, KING BABY is a brand new build, fresh from the shipyard and the perfect opportunity for her owners to have a “grown-up boat,” as they call her. “We wanted something unique that really captured a bit of who we are,” they proclaim and KING BABY is as unique as they come. With both the interior and exterior of the yacht designed by the exceptional Evan K. Marshall, the yacht has a matchless flair that makes her instantly recognizable.

A 101-foot Hargrave custom build, a 68-foot Sunseeker predator, speed boats and Cigarette boats all at one time or another were in the fleet of the KING BABY’s owners, but when it was time to go up in size, the owners wanted something not normally found on the market. “It’s a refreshing new build that measures in at just less than 500 gross tons, which is exceptionally large for a 140-foot yacht,” they say.

KING BABY is a remarkably roomy yacht, which is one of the owners’ favorite aspects, along with the attention to detail of the interior. As for style, this yacht has it in spades. Drawing influence not only from the King Baby jewelry line, which was created by a friend of the owner, the yacht also is inspired by rock ‘n’ roll. The sexy, chic atmosphere is unlike anything you’d see elsewhere. From custom doors adorned with the likeness of the legendary Keith Richards to a personally curated collection of rock memorabilia and photos, there is awe-inspiring imagery around every corner in every corridor, stateroom and salon.

Speaking of staterooms, KING BABY has five. From her main-deck master suite with sumptuous furnishings and a sensuous his-and-hers en-suite bathroom to the four lower deck accommodations, including three king staterooms and a spacious twin, there is plenty of space for family, friends and whomever you’d like to join in the party.

KING BABY’s exterior spaces also offer something to write home about. From a sundeck boasting a three-tiered-waterfall Jacuzzi with a swim-up-bar feature to the variety of alfresco dining and entertainment spaces, this yacht was built for socializing and enjoying the beauty of whatever her cruising location may be. Which is New England in the summer months and the Caribbean and The Bahamas in the winter. KING BABY’s owners favor the British Virgin Islands as their top cruising grounds, “The BVIs is the perfect combination of beauty and proximity to a variety of other yachting destinations.” The Exumas also have a special place in their hearts as one of the most unique places that they have cruised.

The owners of KING BABY decided to charter out their yacht “to keep her current and relevant and to keep the crew sharp, always on point, and incentivized.” While they have and likely will continue to charter other yachts, they say that KING BABY stands out thanks to her impressive volume, innovative amenities, “she’s state-of-theart in every possible dimension,” and her outstanding stability and performance. Despite their time spent on other yachts, they’re always keen to come home to KING BABY. “We use her as often as possible; being on board is a total escape,” they say.

“Yachting is the most decadent hobby on the planet” maintain the KING BABY owners. “It allows you to have full control of your environment.” And, when you’re on KING BABY, it is a sleek, sexy, stylish environment complete with five-star service in the most incredible destinations. “Chartering KING BABY is a truly unique experience,” they say, and it’s one we highly recommend you try!”

NICKNAMED THE GOLDEN CITY, THE BOHEMIAN CZECH CAPITAL PRAGUE HAS BEEN RECLAIMED WITH RENEWED AFFECTION AS A CHIC, COSMOPOLITAN CAPITAL WORDS MARINA MICI

01

Nicknamed the Golden City, the Bohemian Czech capital Prague has been reclaimed with renewed affection as a chic, cosmopolitan capital rich with history and architectural delights. The most Western of the post-communist capitals, both literally and figuratively, Prague is a true microcosm of Europe Old and New. Only a few decades ago the capital of Czechoslovakia emerged from behind the Iron Curtain as a compact city of contemporary style with a backdrop of Baroque architecture and cobbled lanes. The cosmopolitan city is now home to fashionable restaurants, an innovative club scene and designers and artists at the tops of their

games. Combine this new Zeitgeist picture with a frame of antiquitous streets and gothic architecture galore, and you have the modern masterpiece known as Prague. Thanks to its relatively petite center, the entire city is accessible on foot. On the left bank of the Vltava River, the rambling Prague Castle complex is one of the most popular sites in the city. Looming large over the capital, buildings enclosed by the castle walls include the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral, the Baroque Old Royal Palace and the Romanesque St. George’s Basilica, along with museums and galleries and the tiny and very photogenic lane known as Novy Svet.

Steps lead down from the Castle to the Malá Strana (Lesser Quarter) district, an area with ornate mansions built for 17th and 18th century nobility. Behind Malá Strana and watched over by the Castle lies Petrin Hill. Formerly the royal orchards of the Castle, the vast park grounds are completed by the Žižkov Television Tower and a funicular railway. The Castle and Malá Strana district are linked to the Old Town by the Charles Bridge, Prague’s most famous monument. Decorated by 30 Baroque statues of saints, the 14th century bridge is home to buskers and souvenir sellers. The Old Town is hemmed in by the Vltava River and comprises three large avenues that lead to Old Town Square — a plaza encircled by palaces and a Gothic cathedral and anchored by the Old Town Hall’s tower with its medieval astronomical clock. The art scene in Prague also has been revived and today the Museum Kampa, Rudolfinum Gallery, and the Museum of Czech Cubism housed in Black Madonna House provide quality exhibitions. The most desirable neighborhoods to stay in are Old Town and Malá Strana, and both districts have some outstanding hotel options. With its still-active ecclesiastical libraries and 18th century frescoes, the Augustine hotel merges an antiquated location and history with modern design. Housed in a 13th century monastery in Malá Strana, a working community of Augustinian friars still live on the grounds. The Augustine’s courtyard restaurant with glass ceiling and bar inside the monastery’s barrel-vaulted hall are well worth staying in for. Set among the 17th century palaces and gardens of the Malá Strana district, the Mandarin Oriental also is built on the site of a monastery. The tranquility of the Mandarin Oriental tradition is amplified throughout the host of buildings that make up the hotel. Amenities include a comprehensive spa set in a former Cistercian monastery and the Spices Restaurant and Bar, serving both pan-European cuisine and Asian dishes. The Four Seasons on the east bank of the Vltava River in the city’s medieval heart is one of Prague’s best-located hotels. It comprises four buildings from different architectural eras (Baroque, Neoclassical, Neo-Renaissance and Modernistarevival). The hotel’s revamped award-winning spa opened this summer; it also boasts the Michelin-starred restaurant Allegro, which is one of the city’s finest dining experiences. It features alfresco riverside tables.

Prague also is famous for its glass craftsmanship, but unfortunately a lot of places sell inauthentic products to tourists. For high-end, lead-free crystal pieces, Moser and Material are known for superior artistry and craftsmanship. For a modern take on designs, Artel has two boutiques and four spectacular chandeliers, there is Preciosa and Lasvit. For traditional Bohemian garnets, go to local jewelers Halada or Studio Sperk.

And if art is your thing, Modernista deals in good reproductions of Czech Cubist paintings, furniture and ceramics; Kubista sells pieces inspired by the design of the same era. From fairytale architecture to good food and drink, Prague has to be one of Europe’s loveliest capitals and is well worth a diversion at the beginning or end of any trip to the continent.

01 In the Driver’s Seat The Vanquish VQ48 was designed with the driver in mind; high-performance handling appeals to the car lover who wants the same control on the water. Seamless steering, powerful acceleration, high-level agility and excellent seakeeping are promised in the 49-foot launch. The VQ48 can be powered by twin 600hp or 715hp engines and assisted by pod drives. The top speed is 40-plusknots, while the Veloce version pushes this speed to well over 50 knots. Not just a good performer, the VQ48 is a looker, too, with sleek lines by Dutch superyacht designer Guido de Groot.

03 The Super SUP Take your workout to the water with the new Mirage Eclipse from Hobie. The clever contraption combines the buoyancy of a stand-up paddleboard with foot pedal power and handlebar controls of a bicycle. The foot pedals, a system made popular on Hobie’s kayaks, connect to large fins beneath the water’s surface, which efficiently drive the board forward. Much like a bicycle, an aluminum alloy handlebar adds stability and control, though instead of brakes the levers on the handlebars assist in maneuvering. Constructed in advanced composite epoxy, this high-performance paddleboard is extremely stable. It’s also highly adaptable – the handlebars can be removed and the pedals and rudders locked in place so it can transform into a standard SUP in minutes. The Mirage Eclipse comes in two sizes. Available in sunny yellow or bright blue, the craft is easily spotted on the water.

02 The Space-Saving SUP The SipaBoards Air is the answer for an over-stocked tender garage. This easily inflatable stand-up paddleboard self-inflates in less than five minutes. With the touch of a magnetic switch, a fully integrated pump blows up the board via an electric compressor, which is powered by a rechargeable battery that can inflate the board three times before needing a recharge. Designed expressly to help paddleboarders get on the water more quickly, the petite board can fit into a backpack before it’s pumped, and when ready to go on the water it inflates in moments. The Air comes in three different shapes depending on your needs: the Cruiser, for long-range paddles; the Balance, highly stable and ideal for yoga; and the All Rounder, perfect for the entire family.

04 A Match Made in Heaven An instant classic the moment it hit the water, Riva has launched its new Rivamare speedboat. The 39-foot Riva will make an ideal day boat or tender to a suitably sized superyacht. Inspired by the famed Aquariva Super and the Aquarama, the glossy, mahogany decked Rivamare channels her sisters’ timeless elegance, weaving in modern comforts and intelligent use of space. The stern boasts a mini beach club while the cockpit has a C-shaped lounge set around a folding table. The luxe interior is open and spacious with a kitchen, a dinette, a living area that converts into a bedroom and a separate bathroom. What’s better than a sexy new Riva? A Fiat designed specifically to match, of course. Two icons of Italian design have come together to create the new Fiat 500 Riva, a sporty blue Fiat with Riva flair. The Fiat 500 Riva, available in hatchback or convertible, has luxurious appointments to mimic its waterborne inspiration; a hand-painted mahogany dash and ivory leather interior were exclusively created by Italy’s Poltrona Frau.

SUV

Once a focus of environmentalist loathing and descried by many as unnecessary, sport utility vehicles — commonly known as SUVs — have enjoyed such a surge in popularity of late; so much so that the sector has left the conventional passenger car market for dead in terms of sales growth. In the U.S. last year, prestige automakers such as Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche saw an increase of up to 30 percent in the number of SUVs driven from their showrooms. Passenger car sales, however, managed rises of only a fraction of one percent at best, negative numbers at worst.

In Europe, meanwhile, 24 percent more SUVs were registered in

01 Maserati Levante The Levante brings some high-end Latin style to the SUV market with a sleek, almost-coupe-like body. Naturally, the Trident marque’s reputation for performance is upheld through the use of a three-liter, twin-turbo gasoline engine, which produces 430 horsepower on the premium “S” model. There’s a less powerful gas engine available, too, as well as an economical diesel version. Whichever Levante you choose, however, it should perform just as well off the road as on it thanks to the availability of five different ride heights and six drive modes. An 8.4-inch touch screen commands the state-of-the-art infotainment system, while an array of premium leathers are available for the interior — in addition to the ultra-elegant Ermenegildo Zegna trip option, which incorporates the legendary Italian cloth maker’s finest jersey silk in the seats, door panels and roof lining.

an astonishing 70 percent more of them on the continent’s roads than there are today. The majority of growth in Europe is accounted for by small and medium-sized SUVs from makers such as Renault, Toyota and Nissan, but now the race is on among high-end manufacturers to capture a lucrative slice of the fast-emerging market for large “super-luxury” models to which the word “utility” doesn’t seem entirely appropriate. The target market? America. Enjoy the following list of on-the-market-now models, and dream about those on the horizon....

70% MORE SUVS ON THE CONTINENT’S ROADS THAN THERE ARE TODAY 02

02

02 Bentley Bentayga The first arrival in the luxury SUV sector, the Bentayga takes off-roading to a whole new level. With a top speed of 187 mph, it needs but four seconds to hit 60 from standstill —and it “over achieves” almost everywhere else. Its handling exceeds anything previously available on an SUV thanks to 48-volt “electric active roll technology.” It also is fitted with a dozen ultrasonic sensors, five cameras and short- and long-range radar systems, which help anticipate collisions and react accordingly. A dazzlingly comprehensive touchscreen infotainment system offers onboard Wi-Fi and 32-gigabyte “Bentley Entertainment Tablets” that can be used either in or out of the cabin. The audio system is claimed to be the loudest ever fitted to an SUV. Perhaps the ultimate expression of luxury from the options list, however, is the mechanical tourbillon clock made by Breitling, hewn from gold and mounted in a dash-top pod. It’s an extra — but it costs almost the same as the Bentayga’s $200,000 base price.

03 Range Rover Evoque Convertible The latest version of the super-popular Evoque — more than 520,000 standard versions have been sold since its launch in 2011 — is not in the same, super-high price segment as the other vehicles featured here. But we include it because it’s the first luxury SUV on the market to feature a convertible roof. On paper, the result is an automobile that offers a far less appealing proposition than its hardtop relatives because it can carry fewer people, has a far smaller trunk, weighs more and costs more. But the fact that it is undeniably cool, looks great and drives really well makes it undeniably covetable. And its fourwheel-drive capability means it retains a modicum of practicality as a workhorse for towing boat trailers and so on. It can wade in half a meter of water and climb a 45-degree incline. It’ll likely be the hottest car on the slipway.

04 Lamborghini Urus The Lamborghini Urus is possibly the most anticipated newcomer to the high-end SUV sector — and the one with the longest gestation period. The Urus concept was first unveiled in 2012, yet the real thing won’t hit the streets until 2018. But when it does, prepare to be impressed. Lamborghini says it will uphold the sporting heritage of the marque by being both the most powerful and the fastest SUV on the planet, meaning it’s set to touch 200 mph. It will achieve speed through the use of the first-ever turbocharged engine to appear in a Lamborghini. The four-liter, V8 unit promises to be considerably more efficient than the V10 and V12 engines, which power the two sports cars in the current range. The firm expects to sell up to 3,000 examples of the Urus in the first year, which will mean doubling the current production. It will not, however, be Lamborghini’s first foray into the off-road world. Back in 1986, it launched the LM002, which combined the 444-horsepower V12 engine of the Countach with Humvee looks, a premium interior and a price tag of $120,000. Just 301 were made. 05 Rolls-Royce Cullinan (not pictured) Bentley may have got there first, but RollsRoyce promises its “super premium” SUV will offer more of everything when it goes on sale next year. Codenamed “Cullinan” after the largest gem-quality diamond ever mined, it is expected to uphold the marque’s reputation for providing ride comfort of “magic carpet” quality both on the road and off it. “Effortless everywhere” is the phrase being used to describe the performance of what RollsRoyce is calling a “high-sided, all-terrain vehicle,” which spy shots suggest is based on a shortened version of the Phantom’s aluminum space-frame chassis. It likely will be powered by the Phantom’s 6.8-liter, V12 engine, but also could be made available with a hybrid electric powertrain (which currently is under development). The Cullinan will undoubtedly offer the most sumptuous interior of any SUV on the market, and also will be the only one to feature the rearward-opening doors used on other Rolls-Royce models. But with all that, it is likely to be the most expensive — fully optioned examples are predicted to tip the scales at almost $1 million.

No, we’re not talking fame and fortune (although the two do ring true for all,) it’s their love of puffing on a big fat cigar. From Groucho Marx to Al Capone, not forgetting Alfred Hitchcock along the way, great men and great cigars have always gone hand-in-hand.

But when a fine cigar is paired with a fine oak barrel-aged Cognac…that’s when the magic happens. That’s when Bach’s “Air On the G String” (best known to you and me as the theme tune to the iconic British “Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet” adverts from 1966-97) breaks into spontaneous play. The sheer variety of cigars and Cognacs available is mindboggling, and deciding which cigar to pair with what Cognac is a subjective matter.

Cigar aficionados spend years honing their palates and fine-tuning their preferred combinations, but for the enthusiastic amateur a good tip is to match the strength of flavor of the cigar with the strength and flavor of the Cognac, says Dawn Davies MW, buyer for The Whisky Exchange. “Cigars, like spirits, can range in flavor and different cigars will work with different spirits,” she says. “Cognac is an ideal pairing as the rich spiced notes from wood aging together with the sweetness of the spirit can handle the full flavors of the cigar.”

Cuba for cigars has been likened to Napa Valley, California, for wines — a prolific hub of production thanks to its ideal growing conditions, in this case for tobacco. First timers should try something along the cigar with earthy, peppery flavors blended with a robust tobacco taste; the more common Romeo y Julieta contains every flavor imaginable: floral and nutty, herbal and tangy, fruity and woody without being particularly tannic.

It’s not all about Cuba, however, so for something exceptional there is the King of Denmark, a Royal Danish Cigar made to order using the very rare Regal Blend and encrusted with Swarovski crystals, wrapped in gold foil embossed with the client’s name — it costs a mere $150 a pop. Or for the ultimate pairing, push the boat out with Gurkha’s His Majesty’s Reserve (HMR); each cigar contains 18-year-old tobacco and has been soaked in a $2,500 bottle of Louis XIII de Rémy Martin Cognac. These cigars define excess and taste at $15,000 a box or $750 for a single cigar. While there are close to 200 Cognac producers in the world, a large percentage of Cognac comes from only four: Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell and Rémy Martin.

06

For a brandy to bear the name Cognac, which is protected under appellation law, it must be made from specific grapes, of which Ugni blanc (or Trebbiano), known locally as St. Émilion, is the one most widely used. The brandy must be twice distilled in copper pot stills and aged at least two years in French oak barrels made from the forests of Limousin or Tronçais. Courvoisier remains the only Cognac house to control the whole process from grape to glass, while Hennessy, the largest Cognac producer in the world, was founded in 1765. A highly regarded brand, the range stretches from VS (Very Special) to XO (Extra Old) and beyond. The prestige cuvée Richard Hennessy, which is housed in a crystal decanter, is considered to be truly exceptional, priced at $3,240 per bottle.

Cognacs blended specifically to accompany cigars usually contain XO-quality Cognacs with sufficient age to develop the cigar-friendly ‘rancio’ traits. Cognac house Gautier even sent several of its Cognacs to Cuban cigar makers to taste and give feedback; four blends were created based on their responses. On the whole, however, it’s hard to go wrong if you pair like-for-like, says Davies: “Try a fuller XO Cognac with a more powerful flavored cigar with notes of mocha and sweet spice, such as a Cohiba Robusto, or a more delicate VSOP [Very Superior Old Pale] Cognac with a softer cigar, such as an H. Upmann Coronas Major.”

IMAGINE A CITY WHERE EVERYBODY COULD DRAW WHATEVER THEY LIKED; WHERE EVERY STREET WAS AWASH WITH A MILLION COLORS & LITTLE PHRASES

C U LT U R E S P Y GRAFFITI GROWS UP WORDS DANIEL SCHEFFLER

Cave people really invented graffiti. Dating back to 38,000 BCE, prehistoric humans scratched their cave walls and ceiling as expressions of themselves, and, of course, their world. Today, this art form has somewhat evolved; taken to the streets and into the minds of the cognoscenti. Modern times have given us easy access to spray paint and marker pens (opposed to the rocks used in Ancient Egypt) and the messaging has become stronger and fantastically more relevant. Contemporary graffiti, entwined with hip-hop music and New York’s avant-garde art world of the 20th century, is a tool of communication – expressing hopes, dreams and, above all, starting a conversation.

It was, after all, Banksy, the famed masked satirical street artist from Bristol in the United Kingdom, who mimed lyrically: “Imagine a city where graffiti wasn’t illegal, a city where everybody could draw whatever they liked; where every street was awash with a million colors and little phrases; where standing at a bus stop was never boring. A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business. Imagine a city like that and stop leaning against the wall — it’s wet.” And so street art took the baton, and ran with it.

“There are plenty of artists creating free, unsanctioned art in the streets, keeping alive the raw energy and creativity that gave rise to the art form in the first place,” says Hakeem Osman, a member of the Lisbon-based cultural platform Underdogs. “The beauty lies in this coexistence we see today.” Underdogs, created in 2010, uses its know how and love for street art to foster spaces within the contemporary art scene for artists connected with the new languages of urban-inspired graphics and visual culture. And the city of Lisbon feels this love, exactly.

STREET ART, WITH ITS GESTURES AGAINST SOCIETY, HAS FINALLY COME INTO THE MAINSTREAM CONVERSATION & HAS BECOME CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY’S SHOW OF ITS HAND

8 9

04

Portugal’s cute capital seems to be currently placed in the vanguard of the global street-art scene; with both the city authorities and its citizens truly embracing this new form of public art. In fact, the City Council has promoted the artistic side of street art and curbed illegal graffiti. “So many artists emerge from the Lisbon street scene and they are leaving their marks around the world. We’re obviously biased on this one, but look at how Vhils (Portuguese graffiti/ street artist Alexandre Manuel Dias Farto) has revolutionized urban art,” smiles Osman. According to Osman, the street art world has changed during the last ten years from an illegal, low-key scene focused on works done in a hurry to a generalized acceptance by cultural and municipal institutions. And it is these very institutions that have helped develop a new form of public art based on sanctioned large-scale productions, thus

allowing perceptions to change. “This new approach has brought about many benefits: it has enabled artists to develop and present their work in ideal conditions; it has enabled street art to better integrate into the city fabric and it has given it a legitimacy that has results in recognition by researchers and art specialists as a serious, valid art movement in its own right,” says Osman. Street art, with its gestures against society, has finally come into the mainstream conversation and has become contemporary society’s show of its hand. But like Osman says it’s hard to predict how it will evolve in its next incarnation. “The amazing thing about this movement is precisely how much it has already contributed towards changing our cities in such a short time,” he continues. “The work of these artists has helped reshape our perception of the city and the way we enjoy and live in it. We can only believe that further generations of artists and activists will keep on interacting with the city, bringing about positive change.”

TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION ARE VIBRANT & EXCITING GENRES, & THEY BECOME EVEN MORE EXCITING WHEN THEY MEET HIGH NET WORTH FAMILIES

DC Finance, founded 15 years ago, is a leader in the field of conferences for family offices and high net worth individuals. At almost any event held by the firm, from Israel to the U.K. to the U.S., the opening session features a high tech and innovation panel. In April 2016, the company established a conference dedicated to tech and innovation. Why? Because technology and innovation are vibrant and exciting genres, and they become even more exciting when they meet high net worth families who, for the first time, are considering investing in these fields. Eighty-five percent of the world’s wealth is not tech oriented. It was not made in the technology sector nor do the people holding this wealth invest heavily in technology or innovation. But the tech world provides endless opportunities for growth. The wealth of this audience is very traditional and was appropriated from various sectors. But if this audience starts to tap into the tech market, investment-wise, the possibilities are endless. It is beginning to happen more and more every day for a variety of reasons.

The first of these reasons being that the up-and-coming generations (next gens) of these families have a better understanding of the importance of technology and innovation. Not only that, but they also see the profit potential and appreciate that investing in these fields can be exceptionally beneficial. Secondly, the next gens of these families want to leave a mark. This is true for non-tech related investments as well. These next gens are willing to invest in genres other than the core business to expand dividends and leave a legacy. Third, passion investments — a psychological financial term that describes an investment that may not make much economic sense but excites the investor (like paintings or Broadway shows) — are commonly made in the tech field. Investors likely to make passion investments in the tech genre are excited about the adventure, especially when there is a passionate entrepreneur involved.

The last reason is impact investing, which refers to investments made into companies, organizations and funds with the intention to generate a measurable, beneficial social or environmental influence alongside a financial return. Often these are made by next gens in the tech and innovation fields. Everything in the “life sciences” category is for high net worth investors an impact investment and, as such, they allocate capital for it. Generally, the life sciences field does not raise capital easily, especially pharmaceutical companies with perceived high risk and long investment terms. But within the high net worth community, the life sciences category offers the “positive element,” allowing them to invest in curing disease, helping the environment and so on. While all of these reasons for investing in tech and innovation exist, it’s unlikely that we will see investors making their way to Silicon Valley to find investments. However, if the right companies approach the investors, it is likely the investors will at the very least be interested. Many companies are seeking to bypass the venture capitalists (VCs) that would many times invest at harsh terms. Other companies are harder for VCs to digest, as those companies are hard to categorize or the VCs lack the analysis tools necessary.

Not every company is a good fit to less experienced investors; this is why DC Finance prefers to showcase to clients tech companies from easy-to-understand sectors, such as the Internet, biotech, cyber tech, homeland security and innovation in general. Unlike traditional institutional investors, private wealth and single-family offices are uniquely positioned to invest in tech. This is in part due to their freedom of cross-sector investments, company stages, growth perspective and market cap, as well as no restrictive holding periods due to a fund’s timeline or structure. They are more open to taking risks than funds. Some family offices see this as an exciting adventure — passion investing. With flexibility, patience and resources, private wealth comprises the ideal long-term investor base. It is wise for tech companies to continue to seek out these investors, but keep in mind the number of these offices with other sectors who would love to allow clients to diversify their investments, especially with the second and third generations who are keen to not only leave their marks on the family business, but also to diversify where the future lies.

Dine @ Joe’s Stone Crab A classic never goes out of style, as Joe’s proves by serving up succulent stone crabs season after season for more than 100 years. Open October through May, this Miami Beach institution doesn’t take reservations but does offer private dining in a smaller room with seating for up to 16 guests.

Spa @ Tierra Santa Healing House The new Faena Hotel on Miami Beach is a study in good service, only rivaled by that of a superyacht. Each floor of the hotel has its own butler, the pool boys personally rinse beach sand from your feet and the spa is divine. Lauded as the first South American-inspired spa in Miami, the Tierra Santa Healing House utilizes ancient indigenous ingredients and holistic healing techniques. Highly recommended is the spa’s exclusive Tree of Life Vibrations treatment, combining massage, sound therapy, Brazilian rose stones and hot oil-dripping to enhance the relaxation process. Berth @ Fisher Island Marina Only accessible by boat is the private Fisher Island, just across from Miami Beach. It’s the perfect escape to get away from the hustle and bustle of the “main land” with plenty of luxurious amenities to boot — tennis, golf, beach club, you name it — while being close to Miami when it’s time for fun. Fisher Island Marina accommodates yachts up to 250 feet with a 15-foot draft.

Dine @ Little Palm Island Only a seaplane or boat can bring you to Little Palm Island, a private island that prides itself on disconnecting from the real world. No phones, TVs or alarm clocks will be found here. Little Palm is a blissful retreat, not only for the peace and quiet offered, but also for the exquisite meals served up by its beachfront restaurant The Dining Room. Sample from the Grand Tasting Menu with seven succulent courses. Specialties include the coconut lobster bisque and 72-hour chile-braised beef short rib. Be sure to request a private table on the beach or the exclusive Chef ’s Table in the kitchen.

Drink @ Sunset Pier Key West is famous for its sunsets, but avoid the hordes gathering in Mallory Square; instead perch over the water at Ocean Key Resort and Spa’s Sunset Pier. The pier is set between the chaos in the square and the solitude of Key West Harbor, allowing for a respite from the crowds of Key West, yet retaining all the zest the island is known for. Expect live music, cocktails and fresh seafood while you enjoy sundown views. Culture @ Hemingway House Literary aficionados and six-toed-cat lovers alike rejoice with a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Papa Hemingway came to the little island of Key West in 1928, and during his first visit here finished writing “Farewell to Arms.” The house was in a state of disrepair when Hemingway took ownership in the early 1930s. He made many improvements, including the addition of an in-ground pool, which was the first of its kind in Key West. Many of the furnishings that remain in the house today were collected by Hemingway during his time in Europe. Visiting the home offers a unique insight into the life of one of America’s most celebrated authors — and the nearly 50 polydactyl cats that are offspring of Papa’s original brood.

Explore @ Dry Tortugas Those who think that the Florida Keys end in Key West might be surprised to learn that the islands stretch farther on yet. Called the Dry Tortugas, few of these islands have seen the touch of man. Approaching Garden Key, the Civil War-era fort rises from the water like a mirage.
