DEAR DIARY, IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN? I recently celebrated another birthday! It wasn’t a decade birthday, but close. For me, birthdays are an excellent time for reflection, goal setting and an overall assessment of life. Every year, I increasingly appreciate the value of my family, health, friendships and time. For 30 years, the yachting community has played a significant part in my life and family. There have been marriages, births, graduations, reunions, deaths, and of course, countless stories — if you have been on a boat, you have a story! Isn’t that the joy of the yachting lifestyle? Make no mistake, it’s a lifestyle choice. But oh, what a choice! There are limitless boundaries when you’re on board. A yacht provides safety, transportation, comfort, respite…and of course, stories. You have a close-knit community anywhere in the world. Now, for one of my most recent stories. Mariette, Matthew and I recently traveled to Cuba, a country like no other I have visited. If ever there was a destination best explored by yacht, Cuba tops the list. Walking the streets is like stepping back in time, there is beauty and unusual sights at every turn.

Don’t just take my word! A team of Northrop & Johnson charter brokers also visited Cuba recently. They, too, can spout first-hand knowledge on the ins and outs of visiting, chartering and the best place to grab a mojito (everywhere, anywhere). Speaking of charter, the summer season will be here before we know it. Early indicators are that the Med will again sell out in July and August, so pull out those calendars and book those dates early. Don’t fret if you miss the boat (pun intended), the fringe summer months of June and September also are excellent for cruising, and offer significantly more availability. New England, Caribbean, and The Bahamas should have excellent availability this summer with a variety of fantastic yachts at great prices. We expect Alaska to be busy again this year. Dubbed the Last Frontier, Alaska has a relatively short season and limited amount of yachts chartering. Best to book early as Alaska is a hot bucket-list item (rightfully so). If Alaska isn’t remote enough, our charter brokers in Asia and the South Pacific have an excellent selection of yachts available with knowledgeable, enthusiastic, crew ready to welcome you aboard.

On the sales front, we’re predicting a strong year. The major shipyards have comfortable order books and we are finally seeing yachts less than five years old come onto the market. As with any market, yachts in the best condition with the best prices come off first. I didn’t intend for this to be a sales update. I penned this as a reminder that time marches very quickly; family, health, adventure, and relaxation should be enjoyed whenever possible. So, let’s end on that note. We’ve all worked hard for our accomplishments. If we don’t enjoy our family, health, and achievements now, then when? Let’s go make an incredible photo album! Best wishes, I look forward to seeing you on the water.

Kevin Merrigan, President & CEO

SCOPE

“I don’t see my job solely as an effort to maximize the numbers or values of closed deals. Consistent success in our business comes only when you pay attention to the details, as well as the needs and wants of your customers. These deals don’t happen by accident; they are an intense collaborative effort involving many people, hundreds of hours of work and many years of experience on both sides. But most importantly, we need to remember that the closed deal is not the end goal; we should all be striving to produce happy, satisfied owners that have great stories to tell about travels with family and friends. That’s the true mark of a good deal.” 02 Marsh Private Client Services Renews Brand Partnership Marsh Private Client Services (PCS), a division of Marsh USA Inc., and the Marsh PCS Yacht Practice, has renewed its Strategic Partnership contract with Northrop & Johnson for the 2017 calendar year. 03 Cameron Bray Wins Young Entrepreneur Tourism Award Northrop & Johnson Managing Director Australia Cameron Bray was presented with the 2016 Gold Coast Young Entrepreneur Tourism Award. The Gold Coast Young Entrepreneur Awards recognize the area’s top business founders and entrepreneurs who have contributed to economic prosperity, challenged the status quo or pioneered social change. The event gala itself is heralded as a highlight of the Gold Coast social calendar and is an ideal networking opportunity for young professionals in the region. Bray was the recipient in the tourism category, praised for his contribution to Gold Coast Tourism. Bray has been a major player in the yachting and tourism industries for many years. In 2012, he established his own charter management firm and in 2016, he joined the internationally renowned Northrop & Johnson team, offering clients a brick-and-mortar operation in Australia.

I LIVE & BREATHE THIS INDUSTRY & THRIVE ON BEING A PART OF THE GROWTH. WE CERTAINLY DON’T DO IT FOR THE ACCOLADES, BUT IT IS ALWAYS NICE CA ME RO N B RAY M A NAGI NG D I RECTO R, NO RTH R O P & J O HN S O N AU ST R A L IA

04

“Winning was entirely unexpected,” said Bray. “We were up against serious competition in the tourism and hospitality industries. I’m proud to be recognized for something that I am incredibly passionate about. I live and breathe this industry and thrive on being a part of the growth. We certainly don’t do it for the accolades, but it is always nice.” Bray faced down a variety of exceptional companies in his category, including theme parks, attractions and hotels. One of Bray’s main focuses is to educate the Australian market about the yachting industry, specifically chartering in Australia and bringing more yachts to the region, which is well suited for the lifestyle. Bray is proud that the efforts of the Northrop & Johnson team have been recognized outside of the yachting industry and considers this award as a success for yachting in the region. “What I am proudest of is to be recognized by the mainstream audience,” said Bray. “Superyachts have always been a bit of the unknown, but we’re now seeing our lobbying and marketing efforts paying off by more yachts visiting our region, more guests chartering yachts, purchasing yachts and setting them up as charter businesses. All this equates to a greater supply chain benefit through the entire industry right down to the mum and dad businesses. We work hard promoting N&J in Australia and globally. At charter events and yacht shows, our job is first and foremost to raise the profile of Australia through destination marketing as a region.” 04 Sara Wikstrom Promoted to Sales & Marketing Coordinator Northrop & Johnson’s Antibes Office Manager Sara Wikstrom was promoted to Sales & Marketing Coordinator in early 2017. OUR E EXPERT RETAIL CHARTER BROKERS HAVE THEIR FINGERS BR ON THE PULSE OF THE INDUSTRY. THEY WEIGH IN TO SHED SOME LIGHT ON 2017’s HOTTEST CHARTER SPOTS & BEST LOCATIONS TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL

Croatia

Cuba

Alaska

“When getting away from it all on board a private yacht, there is no better place than Croatia’s tiny pristine islands and their private anchorages. When cruising, you can witness the pure beauty of the Dalmatian coastline and explore the incredible bay of Kotor, which is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the Mediterranean — it really is heaven on earth.”

“I think Cuba will be 2017’s top charter destination. Everyone — including Americans and Europeans — is clamoring to go before the ‘Americanization’ sets in, which seems likely in the very near future. In addition, everyone wants to be the ‘first’ to go. We’re not only seeing this with charter clients, but also with yacht owners too. The charter inventory in the area is growing every day as more and more owners are agreeing to send their yachts to Cuba. It’s a matter of proper planning to ensure the yacht and charterer are legally okayed. Time and attention to detail are of the utmost importance.”

“I may be biased, but I think Alaska is a top destination for 2017. It’s a bucket-list item for most people and it’s appealing because of its remoteness and beauty. It’s also one of the last untouched locations in the world. Alaska is much larger than people realize and guests can’t help but be awed by her vast lush rainforests and larger-than-life wildlife. Everything is bigger in Alaska, from the mountains and the wildlife to the breathtaking background scenery. It’s a magical place and a must-do cruising destination because there’s no other place like it in the world.”

SPOTLIGHT H U G O VA N S C H A I K Q What is your background within the yachting industry and how did you come to be a yacht broker? A I started sailing at age 11; at 15 I became a sailing instructor and at 16 I bought my first boat, a 20-foot open sailboat to sail the big lakes in The Netherlands — that was the same year I enjoyed my first trip to sea.

When I was 26, I built my own 45-foot sailing yacht. The project took six years to complete, but building the yacht was one of the best and most educational experiences for me. It makes you realize the complexity of the components, which all work together as one to conquer the forces of nature. My experience as a sailor taught me the need for quality of construction, as well as quality materials.

I lived on the yacht I built for several years while working as an interim manager in the finance industry. Six years ago, I left finance to follow my passion in the yachting industry. My wife Feng is Chinese and between the two of us, we have quite an extensive network of friends and family in China. This gave us a base of business to start our own yacht brokerage.

01 Hugo van Schaik, Executive Director of Northrop & Johnson Asia & China hugo.vanschaik@ northropandjohnson.com

N A V I G A T O R S P O T L I G H T

The marine and boating lifestyle in Asia is beginning to grow, but in China, it is still in its infancy. Three years ago, we decided to expand outside of China; this is when we met Bart and Sytske Kimman of Northrop & Johnson Asia. Asia We developed a relationship and in 2016 wee joined the Northrop & Johnson team and openedd the first Northrop & Johnson office in China. What is your best advice to a first-time yacht buyer? My best advice to first-time yacht buyers is to get as much advice from as many people as possible to help you understand what you are looking for. Also, utilize the Internet to do targeted research. Some of the information you find will be useful, some will not — try to differentiate. As you expand your knowledge, you will clarify what it is you truly want. Ask your family to be part of the process, then once you know what you’re looking for, let a professional broker guide you. The broker will offer rational pros and cons and help prevent you from any unpleasant surprises after the sale.

What is the most important facet to a successful yacht sale? It doesn’t matter if you’re working with a buyer or a seller, a successful yacht transaction is all about relationship and trust. A buyer needs to understand exactly what he receives in return for his money; this comes from trusting the advice of hhis broker. The seller must believe he is receiv ceiving good market value for his yacht; this come mes from trusting the advice of his broker. A suc uccessful sale relies on the trust you’ve built uilt and the ability to close a deal. These two fac actors will ensure people come back to you. What, in your opinion,, are a the biggest trends happening in yaccht design? This is difficult to answer since s there is innovation happening in varrious sectors. From bigger to faster to bettter range and fuel consumption to natural and ambient lighting techniques to swim pplatforms, beach clubs and big open spaaces, there are a lot of new trends in yachting — some of which are all incorporatedd into one yacht. The list continues witth owners’ decks, glass swimming poools, sliding roofs and glass used as a structu tural element. It seems we’re living in a time tim of continuous development, in whichh various trends of all kinds are possible. le. I am intrigued by those who start the hese trends. A good yacht designer must ha have the ability to predict what peoplee wwill want next, or take the current tre trends to the next level — that is thee ch challenge.

What is the current state of yachting in Asia, more specifically in China? The maritime market in Asia and specifically China is really in the beginning phase, whereas in Europe and the U.S., it began in the early 1950s. The advantage for China is that the example is set. The development of the infrastructure needed for yachting is evident and, as things can develop at rapid pace, when growth kicks off in China, it will not take very long. Promotion in China is different. Forget emails; use mobile apps. However, that’s not the most important thing. The Chinese understand yachting, but they do not yet have the drive and desire seen in other markets around the world. From a consumer perspective, the Chinese are like all other people around the world. A rapidly growing part of the population is earning serious money. They want to start spending it on luxury goods, including boats, watersports and more. An uptick can be seen in various places, such as Shenzhen. Hopefully yachting will integrate into the culture, but thus far it is only on a small scale. In addition, the government needs to cooperate and change regulations to make the transition easier. But when the market really kicks off, it will develop fast and Northrop & Johnson will have a great position, as it’s already promoting the brand in China.

2 3

What makes N&J stand out among other brokerage companies? I haven’t been part of Northrop & Johnson very long, but thus far I have been very happy not only with our team members, but also with our tools, including those for marketing, researching and promoting yachts; the worldwide network is great. We can easily reach out to a great number of people in the industry around the world without any problem. That’s a great advantage of the systems and infrastructure of N&J. I think we have great company spirit. Maybe that is the most important of all; we act as a team. That is something I do not see that often in other companies. What are your five must-have features on a yacht? A good team, updated charts and GPS, a depth meter, safety gear and a bottle of wine to celebrate arrival! Oops, that makes six! But in all seriousness, from a yachting perspective, I would say the crew can make or break the fun for owners and guests. A good crew is a must and, next to that, at least one tender, toys and good food and drinks.

DOCK DINE NIKKI BEACH SAINT-TROPEZ WORDS ALEJANDRA GUTIERREZ

N A V I G A T O R D O C K & D I N E

THE LOWDOWN ON THE HIGHLIFE Entering Nikki Beach in Saint-Tropez is like stepping into a hidden jewel surrounded by swaying palm trees and warm sunny breezes; picture a scene from a “James Bond” movie with beautiful people everywhere you turn. Nikki Beach is the atmospheric creation of entrepreneur Jack Penrod, who dreamed of creating the first luxury beach club with music, fine dining, entertainment and art all in one. And he did just that by designing a venue for the ultimate private parties and largerthan-life celebrations — a veritable playground for glamorous guests in the world’s most sought-after hot spots, including a Mediterranean town where high-end artists such as Matisse, Paul Signac and Massimo Campigli were inspired to create. Nikki Beach in Saint-Tropez is a sophisticated restaurant and lounge surrounded by an alfresco beach club with a pool, soft sand and signature white linen-lined cabanas everywhere the eye can see. It’s located an hour from Toulon Airport or an hour and forty-five minutes from Nice Airport. It also is ideally suited for arrival by tender. The yacht’s crew will make all the arrangements for your haute, hot day in the sun or an incredible evening dancing under the stars. Whether the yacht is anchored out or docked at one of the luxury marinas nearby, the tender can drop you on the beach outside the club. The perfect mix of jet-set lavishness and Saint-Tropez’s exciting vibe, Nikki Beach is a not-to-be-missed destination for the elite. Your day starts at 11:30 a.m. to the sweet sounds of a resident DJ while you settle in and contemplate whether to read a book, take a nap in the sunshine or dive in into the cool blue waters. From a glass of Clos Vougeot to a bottle of Montrachet, Nikki Beach offers an impressive wine and cocktail list, rivaling that of Europe’s most exclusive restaurants. Inspired by the fresh flavors of the Mediterranean and spices of East Asia, Nikki Beach Saint-Tropez creates the perfect blend to please every gourmand’s palate. Try the mixed fish grill with jumbo shrimp, sea bass and tuna steak, served with baby vegetables and basil potato purée or a delectable tartar de pastèque with watermelon, tomato and feta mixed with organic quinoa, basil and mint, topped with homemade basil sorbet. When the sun begins to set, things really heat up and it’s time to pop the champagne as a world-class DJ spins the ultimate tracks. This is one party that goes well in to the night. And if you need your privacy, Nikki Beach Saint-Tropez can create picture-perfect special events. For 15 years, it has designed some of the finest festivities with customized acts and signature entertainment.

INSIDE/OUT ISLANDER HYBRID WORDS PHILIP BELL & ED DICKINSON

N A V I G A T O R I N S I D E / O U T

As the superyacht market evolved throughout the last 50 years, the expectations and requirements of yacht owners too have evolved; they continue to push the boundaries of design and development. Based in the Netherlands, ICON Yachts has responded to these demands with the construction of a revolutionary yacht that blends intelligent use of space with beautiful design and pioneering technology. This yacht is the 96-foot (29.22m) ISLANDER HYBRID project, which is proudly represented for sale by Northrop & Johnson. A collaboration between ICON yachts and multi-awardwinning designer Ken Freivokh, who envisaged a pocket hybrid superyacht offering all the luxuries of a much larger vessel combined with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, ISLANDER HYBRID is set apart from all other yachts in her range. From the outset, ICON strived to build an exquisite yacht offering the very best of Dutch craftsmanship. Thus, ISLANDER HYBRID’s steel hull and aluminum superstructure were completed and met the Lloyd’s certification standard. ISLANDER HYBRID will be ready for delivery within 18 months of contract completion. The ocean-going steel hull features a 24-foot (7.5m) beam, creating generous interior volume.

ISLANDER HYBRID’s unique diesel-electric propulsion comprises twin Hydrosta electric azimut thrusters with lithium ion battery generators. When ISLANDER HYRBID is underway, the generators will continuously charge the batteries, providing power to the thrusters. With such a system, the impressive fuel consumption is considerably lower than a standard shaft configuration, allowing for a remarkable range of 2,200 nautical miles at 10 knots. In addition, ISLANDER HYBRID is much quieter and produces considerably less exhaust emissions, creating a smoother, quieter ride with very little onboard vibrations — both while underway and at anchor; all complemented by the yacht’s Zero Speed stabilization system.

3 1

01 ISLANDER HYBRID’s interior conveys an intelligent use of space complemented by beautiful design and pioneering technology 02 A sleek, eye-catching exterior profile hints that this yacht is in a class of its own 03 ISLANDER HYBRID offers an array of alfresco spaces well suited for entertaining

ICON Yachts has built an enviable reputation in the last decade, delivering some of the world’s most distinguished superyachts, including the 223-foot (68m) M/Y ICON, the 205-foot (62.5m) PARTY GIRL (ex. MERIDIAN) and the 205-foot (62.5m) M/Y BATON ROUGE. ICON’s attention currently is focused on completing ISLANDER HYBRID, which promises to be yacht in a class of her own.

ICON boasts a reputation of maximizing the space on board its yachts. Thus, ISLANDER HYBRID boasts a highly efficient use of space at a practically unheard size for a custom-build Dutch shipyard of this caliber. The 140-strong construction team at ICON’s facilities in Harlingen is determined to deliver ISLANDER HYBRID to the same technical standards as bigger yachts. Designer Ken Frievokh has become world famous for pushing boundaries and delivering revolutionary projects such as S/Y MALTESE FALCON; the ISLANDER HYBRID certainly follows suit. Frievokh’s aim was to incorporate as many features usually found on a much larger yacht as possible. These include spacious interior dining, large tender storage capabilities, a private on-deck master suite and expansive outdoor spaces. There also has been considerable attention paid to the service areas on board; all technical spaces to allow ISLANDER HYBRID to run with a full complement of crew. The overall feeling of space and light throughout the interior is thanks to the generous use of oversized glass and low, solid bulwarks. These open up the living space dramatically, inviting in the surroundings and offering panoramic views and a seamless inside-outside experience. Natural light also pours into the full-beam master stateroom through a beautifully designed skylight, which runs the length of the cabin all the way from the bed to the exquisitely appointed split-level en-suite. ISLANDER HYBRID’s layout was carefully designed to accommodate up to eight guests in four spaciously comfortable staterooms, including the main-deck master.

ISLANDER HYBRID’s three additional cabins on the lower deck comprise two half-beam staterooms, which can either be configured as doubles or twins and benefit from generously proportioned en-suite facilities and a double cabin found forward of the lower guest accommodation. The open-plan main salon features extensive glazing and flows between lounge and dining areas. Two L-shaped sofas and triangular coffee tables are found here. The oversized superyacht sundeck boasts an alfresco dining space, a full bar, a barbecue grill, sun loungers and built-in seating to port and starboard. Further alfresco dining is provided on the aft deck; it includes seating for eight and a full-service bar. “Offering class-leading innovation, hybrid propulsion and superior Northern European build quality, there are few yachts that will compare with ISLANDER HYBRID upon her completion” says Edward Dickinson, sales broker at Northrop & Johnson. Philip Bell, also a broker of Northrop & Johnson representing ISLANDER HYBRID, adds, “There are no other new build opportunities for a yacht of this size on the market today. ISLANDER HYBRID offers economical, green-propulsion systems and breathtaking exterior and interior designs.” ISLANDER HYBRID is under construction at ICON’s facilities in Harlingen, Holland, where inspections are highly recommended. ISLANDER HYBRID is priced at €10,500,000 exclusively through Northrop & Johnson. Full build specifications and renderings are available upon request.

04 ISLANDER HYBRID offers lavish accommodations for eight 05 The interior spaces benefit from large glass windows throughout 06 ISLANDER HYBRID’S unique propulsion system will afford a 2,200nm range at 10 knots

01 Le Guanahani Le Guanahani recently finished a $40-million, top-to-bottom renovation giving the St. Barts favorite a fresh look inside and out. Exteriors are in bright turquoise, yellow and lavender, while new interiors, including the 30 rooms, 27 suites and 10 signature suites , channel “explorer” and “contemporary Creole” designs. Public areas, restaurants, rooms

and suites all have custom Luis Pons-designed furniture. The decorator was inspired by the luggage chests explorers used for their journeys in the Caribbean. Additionally, there is an extensive fitness center, a Spa by Clarins and several dining and bar options, including dining on the beach with your feet in the sand. The “cook your catch” program

and extensive wellness options are unique. Activities here range from hiking to aqua fitness, paddle fitness, yoga and Pilates. The renovation includes a full-service salon and, of course, the highlight of Le Guanahani remains its location spread across 18 acres with beaches on adjacent bays and a reef.

If you’re on vacation, it’s a quick walk to the Hudson River with its paths for walking and biking, the 911 Memorial, the South Street Seaport and up to Tribeca. Chinatown also is within walking distance, and it offers easy access across the bridge to Brooklyn as well. And if you plan to fly in or out, it’s about a mile from the Downtown Heliport. 02

04 Bürgenstock Situated some 1,500 feet above Lake Lucerne, Bürgenstock is a resort complex that, when it reopens later this year, is expected to take a place on numerous “best” lists. A favorite of fifties and sixties celebrities, it’s where Audrey Hepburn married Mel Ferrer and it served as home for Sofia Loren and Carlo Ponti. One hour from Zurich Airport, the complex will include four hotels, such as the legendary Palace Hotel and The Waldhotel — which is being redesigned by Matteo Thun. There will be numerous restaurants of different styles from Swiss and Asian to Indian; most will offer spectacular views of the hills and lake below. In addition to two golf courses, a variety of outdoor activities and a spa, general wellness will be the central theme. Menus designed by “nutrition scientists” will be part of the offering to guests who want to visit for weight loss as part of medical tourism.

05 Nihiwatu From "Robb Report" and the "Financial Times" to "Vanity Fair," the "Hong Kong Tatler," "Conde Nast Traveler," "Harper's Bazar" and more, Nihiwatu has generated global media coverage. Not only was it rated the number one hotel in the world in 2016 by "Travel + Leisure," but it also has nearly 30,000 followers on Instagram . This is more than the entire Peninsula Hotels group and twice as many as iconic hotels such as Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, despite being located on the secluded Indonesian island of Sumba. Fly in from Bali for a nice combination destination.

The work of former Ritz-Carlton and Rosewood executive James McBride, this former surfer’s hideaway brings the cultures of Africa and Asia together. There is a large equestrian program, a secluded spa where you can stay overnight in a private elevated spa villa, villas with private pools and decks that sit over the ocean, a unique connection with nature and small details of luxury. There are just 33 villas across 600 acres, each with different appeal. The Boathouse is a popular gathering point at the end of the day to watch the sunset, have a drink and enjoy freshly caught sashimi.

Via Bluetooth radio technology for wireless audio transmission, you can access these sounds of splendor via your tablet or smartphone. 02 YAR, The philosophy of Sound The precise sound of live music at home was the dream of Giancarlo Sopegno. It was a project that took him five years, but it finally came to fruition in 2016. The goal of the YAR system is to allow pure sound to naturally flow for what Sopegno calls “that center stage” feeling. The system employs concepts from the design of high-end cars, aeronautics and space technology, while carbon fiber provides for a unique solution to accomplish the mission of offering threedimensional sound as never heard before.

Miami Vice 2017 It’s time for some spring cleaning and afterward, reward yourself with one or all items from this list of spring musthaves for the well-heeled man of the world. Topping the list is the double-breasted suit updated in a tonal grey from iconic American designer Ralph Lauren (01). This hot-offthe-runway ensemble is nothing like the Miami Vice, Sonny Crockett version — although it has just as much swagger. Updated with today’s slim-fit, shorter jacket and slim trouser, make it your own by adding a summer espadrille, like the VLAD croc-embossed leather espadrilles from Jimmy Choo (06) — and always leave the bottom button undone for that Lapo Elkann cool. Exquisitely tailored, this suit will become a wardrobe favorite. Also on our list are spring closet updates from notable names in luxury, including Porsche Design’s high-tech kicks (07) and cotton melange pullover (03) and LaFont frames (05), which are handmade in France. The backpack (04) is a modern take on a classic from Ralph Lauren, which goes from boardroom to airport and everywhere in between. The stage was lined with verdant palm fronds as the rhythm of the music — which was as carefree as a summer day on the Mediterranean coast — moved you through the action. This evoked visions of a seaside day spent sipping Limóncello and eating gelato. As the models began their march, it became clear that the duo’s southern Italian upbringing, which became the clarion call for the brand some time ago, would be a central theme in its latest designs. Bejeweled marching band uniforms started the festivities and were followed by a party of ziti and spaghetti pasta prints; whimsical fish prints and a walking can of crushed tomatoes printed on what seemed like burlap came next. D&G reprised its Madonna statue t-shirt from the 90s, along with pinstriped suits from the same era. Celebrities will adore the black lace knockout dress with 1950s-style high-waist panty and bra beneath — still an amazingly sexy look that replaced the famous corset LBD. Demure summer florals were transformed into a bold rose garden pattern with massive roses on a below-the-knee number (02). This dress is highlighted as inspiration for your spring wardrobe — it’ll get you thinking about a Roman holiday all year round. A cadre of bold accessories are key to vacation dressing, too. Enjoy fancy feet this spring with the Dolce & Gabbana red brocade pump with embellished buckle (12) or Dolce & Gabbana red brocade mules with embellished buckle (09). And throw some serious shade through the Dolce & Gabbana hounds tooth sunglasses (11). Add on the H.Stern “Copernicus” necklace in 18-karat gold and diamonds (08) and grab the Charlotte Olympia “Dotty Pandora” polka dot box clutch (10), and you’re all set. So, choose one or choose all and have a fabulously fashion-forward spring and summer.

For PARTY GIRL’s owners, 2017 is shaping up to be an unforgettable year. They say, “2017 will include the trip of a lifetime [on board PARTY GIRL] taking us through French Polynesia on to Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, and more!”

Although they have only owned the 205-foot (62.48m) Icon superyacht PARTY GIRL for seven months, she’s already shaping up to be one of their favorite yachts. They have owned a host of others throughout their yachting career, “too many to list,” they proclaim; their previous 146-foot Christensen is presently for sale.

01 The beautiful 205-foot (62.48m) Icon charter yacht PARTY GIRL

Now, as the owners of this version of PARTY GIRL, they find themselves on board about 12 weeks a year. “We love travel and being in tranquil waters,” they say. “There’s nothing better than a private five-star floating hotel that can change scenery at any given time.”

But finding their new home away from home did not come easy, as PARTY GIRL’s owners explain. “After a year-long search, touring more than 20 yachts and considering another custom build, we finally found our new PARTY GIRL. With a modern, high-gloss, elegant interior design, state-of-the-art electronics, lots of water toys, a crew of 18 and the ultimate beach club, we knew this was the yacht to take us around the world.” Chuck and Michele don’t charter other yachts and there really is no need to as they spend quite a lot of time on board PARTY GIRL. “[A typical day on board includes] waking up in a two-story master suite with a 180-degree view, followed by breakfast in the beach club and a quick workout in the gym; then we’re off to a private beach set-up with every toy and amenity you can imagine.”

03

And where do they enjoy these spectacular experiences? Well, in 2017 they’ll enjoy the Pacific Ocean, but on board PARTY GIRL thus far, the most unique location they’ve visited was Mexico’s Isla Mujeres — “it’s a hidden jewel of an island that takes us back in time,” they say. Some of their other favorite cruising grounds include The Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands that offer “ …beautiful blue waters, white sandy beaches, the unique character of the islands and endless island hopping.”

PARTY GIRL clearly is near and dear to their hearts and a favorite option to enjoy while traveling, but her owners have opted to charter PARTY GIRL through Northrop & Johnson because “it’s an experience we like to share, and our crew enjoys it, too.” Some of their favorite aspects of the yacht include her stability and elegance; she’s very stable and is equipped to easily travel around the world, they mention. For PARTY GIRL’s owners, yachting offers them something nothing else in life does. “It’s freedom, it’s fun and it’s privacy, if you prefer,” they say. “It’s a healthy outdoors experience with as few as two or as many as an entire family.” And if you’re interested in bringing the whole family on board, PARTY GIRL is available for charter through Northrop & Johnson. She will be available for charter in summer 2017 in the South Pacific. Please contact your preferred charter broker for more details.

NO CITY ON EARTH IS MORE ALIVE THAN MADRID, A BEGUILING PLACE WHOSE SHEER ENERGY CARRIES A SIMPLE MESSAGE: THIS CITY REALLY KNOWS HOW TO LIVE

Madrid, Spain’s lively capital, is a city of elegant boulevards and expansive manicured parks, a maze of beautiful streets. It’s renowned for its rich repositories of European art, including the Museo Reina Sofia and Prado Museum’s works by Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters, while the nearby El Retiro Park is home to several sculptures, monuments and a boating lake. When meandering through the park’s famed wide-open spaces and rose garden, it’s always an unexpected pleasure to take in some street theatre, or, if visiting in the summer, to stop to browse at the annual book fair.

Madrid’s architecture has preserved the look and feel of most historic neighborhoods and streets, despite the city possessing modern infrastructure. Landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid, the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family located in the beautiful and culturally vibrant Ópera district, the Royal Theatre with its restored 1850 Opera House, and the Plaza de Cibeles, a square with a neo-classical complex of marble sculptures and fountains, which has become an iconic symbol for the city center.

62

Much of the city is flat, making it is easy to cover on foot. For a more elevated experience, Madrid’s cable car — the Teleférico — won’t disappoint. The journey starts on the Paseo del Pintor Rosales street, near the Argüelles Metro station, and offers a stunning panoramic view over the River Manzanares and into the largest park in Madrid, Casa de Campo or “Country House,” so-called due to its one-time status as a royal hunting estate. A short walk from Casa de Campo is the Gran Vía, an ornate and upscale shopping street located in central Madrid. Known today as the Spanish Broadway, it boasts the most nightlife in Europe and has earned the nickname “the street that never sleeps.” Here, the boulevards are adorned with lively tapas bars — the quintessential and ubiquitous Spanish food — as is the hip and trendy neighborhood or “barrio” of La Latina. One of the most genuinely authentic neighborhoods in Madrid, much frequented by locals, its medieval streets are arranged around the squares of La Cebada and La Paja, and are alive with numerous bars, pubs and traditional taverns.

The most exclusive neighborhood is Barrio de Salamanca, or “The Golden Mile,” famed for its rows of boutiques and luxury labels, including Gucci, Chanel, Dior and Prada. It also is now home to the recently opened restaurant Tatel — co-owned by Rafael Nadal, Enrique Iglesias and Pau Gasol — and Madrid’s highly anticipated new cocktail bar Beker 6. Offering light refreshment in between fashion sprees, the signature Beker 6 cocktail features dried hibiscus petals heated with Ysabel Regina, a French brandy aged in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.

But while others shop, bagging a much-coveted seat at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to see Real Madrid — one of the best football teams in the world — play is often at the top of most people’s bucket lists. Keep energy levels up while watching from the sidelines with some “chocolate con churros,” a delightful snack of light, crispy sticks of fried dough. There are, of course, other ways of being immersed in Madrid’s long-standing cultural heritage; a night of traditional flamenco is unsurpassed. Madrid has been a stage for the world’s best flamenco since the early 19th century, and the Corral de la Morería is widely recognized as the premier flamenco restaurant in the city. Alternatively, the less squeamish can take in a Spanish

bullfight — an exhilarating experience, albeit somewhat controversial. The best months to see bullfights in Madrid are May and June when the world-famous San Isidro bullfight festival takes place bringing together the best fighters, bulls and aficionados. There are fights every day for 20 days, starting at 7 p.m., with novillos (young bulls), rejones (bullfights on horseback) and Goyesca fights (in period costume). Madrid’s main bullring, La Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas del Espíritu Santo, is an impressive building formed of red brick and ceramic tiles and built in mudéjar style.

Alongside incredible food markets, such as Mercado San Miguel, Madrid’s restaurants are dripping with awards and accolades. Enjoy experimental seaweed lollipops at two-Michelin starred La Terraza, where Spain’s most influential chef, Ferran Adrià, from the famed El Bulli, serves as gastronomic consultant or sample classic Spanish cuisine at Viridiana, which serves hearty, flavorful dishes such as gazpacho with Sardinian bread and filet of beef with chili sauce. Once competing with a litany of two-Michelin starred restaurants in the capital, the unique menu at DiverXO has pushed to the very top of the gastronomic tree, earning itself Madrid’s first ever three-Michelin stars. The unique menu fuses Iberian and Asian cuisine within highly unusual dishes served as works of culinary art. The décor featuring ominous swarms of black butterflies on the ceiling and large flying pigs on the tables make dining at DiverXO an unexpected experience. The Spanish tend to eat much later than their European counterparts, so it’s not unusual to sit down to dine past 10 p.m. Thus, the benefit of a well-situated hotel soon becomes apparent at the end of an exhausting day, and the ME Madrid Reina Victoria, widely known as the bullfighters’ hotel, is located next to the city’s main theaters, boutiques and nightclubs.

07

More importantly, it is home to one of the coolest bars in town, The Roof, where you can gaze upon Madrid’s iconic skyline while sipping goblets of flamboyantly garnished “gin tonics” before flopping into bed. For a quieter affair, the Santo Mauro hotel is housed in an elegant, late 19th century building that was once the residence of the Duke of Santo Mauro, a highly influential member of Madrid’s society in his time. The Ritz is located right in the center of Madrid opposite the Prado and Thyssen museums and possesses splendid terraces and gardens for its guests. A trip to Madrid would not be complete without a dip in one of its exclusive rooftop pools. A secret paradise hiding on top of some of the city’s hotels, the lounge vibe of La Terraza de Oscar Pool Club or the Emperador’s gardenpool area are a perfect way to escape the heady heat in summer. Alternatively, if you want to truly escape the city center for a few hours, head to one of Madrid’s piscinas naturales, such as Embalse de Picadas, a natural flowing lake surrounded by a beautiful pine forest. It’s the perfect place to wind down from a whirlwind weekend in one of Europe’s best capital cities.

01 Rebel, Rebel Think the phrase “stylish RIB” is an oxymoron? While the rugged utility of a RIB tender and sleek lines don’t usually go hand-in-hand, when Christian Grande is behind the drawing board it’s a different story. The Italian yacht designer partnered with RIB builder SACS on the aptly named Rebel 47 — a tender that rebels against the preconceived notion of what a rigid inflatable boat should be. Instead of the typical inflated tubes, the D-shaped solid tubes of the Rebel 47 are made from state-of-the-art moldable foam and high-tech anti-collision plastics, all covered in neoprene hypalon. This unique construction not only gives the boat its sculpted appearance, but also provides enhanced durability, stability and an amazingly dry ride — and an extra wide beam forward allows for great interior accommodations. The tender is available in two different layouts — a “protected version” and a more classic Mediterranean version. Both boast comfy chaise lounges, a large swim platform and a cozy interior living area.

02 Paddle Power Add some oomph to your paddle boarding prowess with PowerBoards electric SUP. This electric standup paddleboard offers just enough of a boost to help users handle pesky wind, currents or waves with ease. No more fighting against the wind to get back to the boat or asking the crew for a tow. The e-SUP literally works at the touch of a button as push-buttons respond the pressure on your feet, hands or chest, as necessary. The impact-resistant propeller makes the board suitable for running well both at sea and on inland waters. Powered by the Fin-Drive System™, the PowerBoard motors at eight to 11 kilometers per hour. It only takes 35 minutes to charge the board to full capacity, so you can be back on the water in no time at all. Navigator readers can procure the PowerBoard at the special price of €3,000 plus taxes and delivery.

03 Sportsmanlike When sleek and sexy is in order for your tender, look no further than the new 29 Sportsman Open by Dutch builder Long Island. This racy, silvertoned tender — complemented by sage-hued cushions — is sure to turn heads in the harbor, but her intrigue goes more than skin deep. Powered by a 320hp Yanmar V8 diesel engine, she runs at 30-plus knots and handles beautifully. She is a smooth operator at both low and high speeds and easily transitions to planing without skipping a beat. The 29 Sportsman Open features an electrically operated sun pad that can open either to port or starboard, so access to the water via the swim platform is never hindered. From sunny days splashing in the water to racing along the coastline or comfortably ferrying guests to the yacht — the 29 Sportsman Open is ready for it all. 04 Catch Some Air Jumping from the upper deck of the yacht is fun enough, but adding in a big bounce ups the fun ante. With the new BigAir Yacht Blob from FunAir, that freefall sensation is more fun and safer than ever. The inflatable toy purveyor has redesigned the Big Air Yacht Blob to include stabilizing outriggers that keep the giant bouncy toy in place a safe distance from the yacht and prevent it from turning in a sea state. FunAir’s BigAir Yacht Blob is the first toy of its kind that’s specifically designed for yachts – it doesn’t have to be tethered to the seafloor to make it safe. You can fling yourself from the top deck and know the blob will be there to catch you. Or make a game of it, as someone waits below on the blob while their partner jumps down and launches them into the air…all the while the Yacht Blob stays in place as it should.

The values of the most-sought-after classic cars seem to be on an unstoppable upward trajectory, which is largely good news for those who bought at the right time. It’s not such good news for those whose dream machines have become out of reach either financially or because the cars are so rare that examples seldom appear for sale. Many collector cars are now worth well in excess of $1 million, and a good few are worth $10 million-plus; this not only means that they now are attainable only by the superrich who often hoard them as investments, but also that their ostensibly lucky owners have become understandably nervous about actually driving them.

In a stroke of good luck, however, an increasing number of rare and valuable classics are being reproduced using brand new components and modern engineering methods to give the look, feel and enjoyment of an old car with the benefits of greater reliability, an easier drive and, in many cases, a far cheaper price tag than those carried by the “real thing.” But don’t fret, as these are not fakes or replicas, but superb “continuations” of the cars that inspired them. They’re so good, in fact, that many people are concluding that the “new old” is far better than “actual old.” While we see this trend popping up frequently, we’ve compiled five of the most interesting examples currently on the market.

01 DeLorean DMC-12 There are few “Back to the Future” fans who haven’t hankered after owning a DeLorean DMC-12, the car on which Doc Brown based his remarkable time machine. Only recently, however, have DeLorean values begun to rise after years of stagnation around the $20,000 mark — where they remained largely because the car’s performance never really lived up to its looks. That is about to change, however, now that Englishman Stephen Wynne is setting out to revive production of the famous, stainless steel-bodied DeLorean DMC-12 from a factory in Humble, Texas. Wynne bought the entire inventory of DeLorean bodies and parts after the original, Belfast-based firm went bankrupt in 1983 and plans to commence delivery of 21st century DeLoreans later this year. The move follows a change in the U.S. law that allows manufacturers to produce 325 examples annually of a car originally made more than 25 years ago, provided it complies with current emissions standards. For Wynne, that means dumping the original, underpowered engine and replacing it with a new one pushing out more than 300 horsepower and giving a top speed of 150 mphplus. Around 300 cars could be built during the next five years. The price tag is $100,000. 02 Jaguar XKSS Having recently completed a project to build six “continuation” lightweight E-type racecars, Jaguar is now getting to work on a small edition of the even more desirable XKSS, a 1950s road car once beloved of Hollywood star Steve McQueen; it’s based on a batch of leftover, obsolete D-type racers. Just 16 were built before a factory fire destroyed five and damaged four that were awaiting delivery. The four were disassembled so their surviving components could be reclaimed. Those chassis numbers will now be used to create nine brand new XKSSs, which will be hand-built from scratch by a team of 50 specialist engine builders, trimmers and coachbuilders using innovative, D-Type engine blocks based on an original found tucked away in a Jaguar dealership. In most respects, the completed cars will be identical to the 1950s original, although certain details — including sections of the braking system — will be upgraded for greater safety. The original cars are priced at $20 million; the “continuations” will be priced at only $1.5 million.

03 Aston Martin DB4 GT Aston Martin has delighted enthusiasts around the world with its recreation of the celebrated DB4 GT. The original car was launched in late 1959 as a more sporty, two-seat variant of the standard two-plus-two DB4. Shorter, lighter and sleeker, it featured faired-in headlamps and a tuned, triple-carburetor engine that endowed the GT with a top speed of more than 150 mph — making it Britain’s fastest passenger-carrying sports car of the day. Production lasted until 1963, by which time 75 examples had been built. A mere eight were lightweight versions intended for competition use. It is these that will be “continued” in a limited run of 25 newly built examples assembled at Aston Martin’s historic Newport Pagnell factory. The 21st-century DB4 GTs will remain true to the specifications of the 1960s models, but will be offered for circuit use only. Aston Martin Works has developed a two-year international track driving program, which includes instruction from Aston Martin Racing Works driver and multiple Le Mans-class winner Darren Turner. This latest version will be priced at approximately £1.5 million, while the price tag for the original ranges around £3 million-plus.

04 Land Rover Series I The market for classic Land Rovers is red hot in the U.S. right now; not least since more than 100 were seized and destroyed in a swoop by Homeland Security after they were discovered to have been illegally imported. There will be no such worries with the results of a new project by Land Rover Classic, which is a rebuild of the highly collectable Series One model from the early 1950s. Each build starts with an original 50s vehicle, which is stripped of every single nut, bolt, rivet and washer before being reassembled from the chassis up using either new- or old-stock genuine parts from Land Rover factory inventory, freshly made components or fully refurbished originals. The number to be built depends on the availability of donor vehicles, which are becoming increasingly scarce. Initially, however, Land Rover is offering everything from the rarest, 80-inch wheelbase models and long wheelbase station wagons to the more readily available 86-inch wheelbase variant. The price will range from $100,000 to $150,000. 05 Shelby Daytona Cobra The late Carroll Shelby’s open, two-seat Shelby Cobra sports car is undoubtedly one of America’s great automotive icons. But perhaps even more legendary are the ultra-rare Cobra Daytona Coupes with which Shelby took on the might of manufacturers such as Ferrari, Jaguar and Aston Martin in the 1965 World Manufacturer’s GT Championship…where it won. It was the first and only time the championship has gone to a team of American-built cars, and original examples of the six, 190-mph coupes penned by the brilliant automotive designer Peter Brock rarely become available and are now hugely valuable. But, to mark the 50th anniversary of the championship win in 2015, Shelby American announced that it would create 50 continuation cars, some with fiberglass bodies and some made from aluminum. Each car is faithful to the original specification, right down to the exact measurements of the body, the original, tubular chassis, 35-gallon endurance racing fuel tanks and Trigo competition wheels. Keep in mind that the price ($349,995 for aluminum; $179,995 for fiberglass) is for the rolling chassis and body only; engines must be purchased separately. But that price tag pales in comparison to the $15 million demanded for an original.

SUPPER CLUBS NO MERE FLASH IN THE PAN, CASUAL DINING HAS CHANGED THE FOODIE LANDSCAPE, AND SUPPER CLUBS HAVE TAKEN SOME OF THE WORLD’S HOTTEST DESTINATIONS BY (QUIET) STORM. WORDS JULIA ZALTZMAN

Once upon a time, in a clearly defined world, people had two options when dining out. They either ate at a restaurant where they bought into the promise of delicious food, endless beverages, enchanting service and a break from the household chores, or they descended upon hospitable friends and family for sociable, elegant dinner parties where the food is an unknown, but the company worth the sacrifice. Spawned from these two activities is the “supper club,” a hybrid that delivers the informality of a domestic setting with the added benefit of restaurant-style service and grub. Gathering pace from Berlin to Buenos Aires, these underground restaurants have accumulated several monikers, from home bistros and guerrilla diners to speakeasies or, in Latin America, a “paladar” or “restaurante de puertas cerradas” meaning “locked-door restaurant.”

Where supper clubs originated from is unclear — some say the phenomena first became popular in the U.S. in the form of prohibition roadhouses, while others believe they are the result of Castro’s iron fist and are built into Cuban culture. What is clear, however, is that supper clubs have been enjoying a global revival in the past decade, and are now internationally understood to equate to a small underground club (often with roving premises, which only are revealed to the guests once a ticket is purchased), where diners eat from a set menu and fraternize with unknown guests. Their foundations might lie in anti-establishment ethics, but the success of supper clubs has led to some rather high-profile examples, including British-born Rachel Khoo’s micro two-seater table in the Little Paris Kitchen, to Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines MBE tweeting about his one-off supper club during Monaco Grand Prix #noreasonjustpassion.

Londoner James Ramsden’s monthly Wednesday Secret Larder, which has since morphed into Michelin-starred restaurant Pidgin in Hackney, embodied the essence of supper clubs. “What I like about them [supper clubs] is their somewhat illicit undercurrent...going to a stranger’s home, eating their food, snooping around their flat,” Ramsden told The Guardian back in 2010. And his affection for them didn’t dwindle, despite his commercial success, exemplified by the choice to open Back to Front, a monthly charity supper club hosted at Pidgin, with Ramsden and his business partner Sam Herlihy cooking, and the kitchen staff working the dining room. Whether searching for the ability to sample new food at low prices outside the traditional restaurant experience, or hoping to uncover a gastronomic coup, supper clubs are as varied and wide-ranging as the people that host them, sporting their own quirks and idiosyncrasies, not to mention curious venues. Take Gingerline, for example, the grand-daddy of immersive dining whose events are top-secret nomadic dinners that began on the London Overground, and have since led diners through submarine mess halls, puppet workshops and Siberian circus rings. Or Battersea-based Supper in a Pear Tree, which combines a life-drawing class with a gourmet meal, and sells out its nude dining tickets at high speed. The Clove Club, a British restaurant that began life as a supper club, has now been named as one of the top 50 places to eat in the world thanks to its ambitious menu featuring such things as mackerel, nasturtium and burnt purée, pheasant as the main course and iced goat’s milk with beetroot granita for dessert.

One of the hottest tickets in Melbourne, the only way to gain access to Zingara Cucina is by personal referral. And in a city that knows nightlife, Muse in Berlin is deemed the supergroup of supper clubs; founded by the owners of eastern Berlin’s secret stalwarts Zuhause and Thyme Supper Club, Muse’s weekend dinners are prepared by the hosts and a slew of local guest chefs. Lauded in The Times and The Guardian, and reviewed by the likes of food critic Jay Rayner, the true beauty of supper clubs is their word-of-mouth and social media promotions. Websites such as Eat My World or Eat With are the best places to sleuth them out when abroad, while Grub Club, which lists no less than 40 different cuisines, has organized supper club events for the likes of Spotify, Google and Nike. For the most part, however, it’s a case of stripping back to basics, getting social with the unknown and immersing yourself in the spontaneous.

01 Ai Weiwei’s Forever Bicycles 2015

WORDS DANIEL SCHEFFLER

If the French conceptual artist Marcel Duchamp has the urinal and the pop artist Andy Warhol has the Campbell Soup can, then artist Ai Weiwei has the bicycle. The Chinese artist, known for his work on the “Bird’s Nest” Beijing National Stadium used for the 2008 Summer Olympics, Ai Weiwei has created an overwhelming pile of bicycles. In fact, 1,500 of them for his art shows around the globe.

These bicycles have been traveling since 2003 and have been featured at Melbourne’s National Gallery, outside the “Gherkin” building in London and, of course, near the Venice Biennale. Entitled “Forever Bicycles” this is one of Weiwei’s large scale (30 feet, in fact) immersive installations — and is a perfect indication of how Weiwei’s creative mind operates.

The title of the work refers to a brand of bicycles, “Forever,” that has been mass manufactured in Shanghai, China, since 1940; they are, however, becoming rare on the streets of the city. Similar to Warhol, who used the Campbell Soup cans, Weiwei toys with the idea of a “found object” turned into something else. “Growing up in China, the bicycle was a major vehicle for people and a status symbol — even though it wasn’t as glamorous as owning a BMW,” said Weiwei. But this simple collocation of BMW and bicycle sounds just like the pop king Andy Warhol.

And this is why one of the most recent Weiwei shows pairs the artist with Warhol — showcasing the artists’ similarities, one voice for the 20th Century and one for today. “Through different formal means, yet utilizing similar strategies, Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei have quite literally defined the aesthetics of their respective times and places, while challenging the sensibilities and mores of all of us,” said Eric Shiner, Director at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and co-curator on this latest Warhol-Weiwei exhibition.

But for all the parallels there also are the juxtapositions. “Warhol is the first artist I felt that I could completely understand. I come from the northwest China, near the Russian border; he comes from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but he is a person with a gesture and language that I completely understand,” said Weiwei. For him, the artist Warhol was possibly 50 years ahead of his time and Weiwei describes him to be “extremely sincere and, at the same time, never sincere, like a person that virtually exists.” Both artists are known for “escaping into their work” and Weiwei thinks that Warhol would have, as he does now, embraced social media in that way. “We both love our time,” said Weiwei, who in 1981 moved to New York and stayed for 10 years. “Of course I went to New York as it was the most hated by communists and it was the farthest place I could go,” added Weiwei.

But Weiwei’s world, right now, is dedicated to his online activism. Twitter, Instagram, viral videos, satirical memes and Weibo (the biggest social network in China), all top the list of his weapons of choice. His activism includes his demand for justice when junky schools collapsed in a Sichuan earthquake killing thousands of children, his critique of the Beijing Olympics, which he dubbed “propaganda,” his comment on “Internet freedom” and the numerous photos of his middle finger directed at the Chinese government.

Some may say that the 20th Century was shaped by America, it did after all produce artists like Andy Warhol. But as we venture deeper into the “Chinese Century” it is clear that activism, heavily politically charged, is where the art world will find itself again. “Warhol is probably jealous that he’s not here right now,” added Weiwei. For more on this amazing artist visit his social media pages: @aiww

The revolution, according to Weiwei, can be lit any moment when you touch the keyboard. And this is exactly where he finds the source of his power. For him, the very idea that a nation would shut down an Internet site because he was having too much fun is powerful; this ultimately led to his arrest in 2011. “Jail didn’t change me in principle, but changed the way I behave,” says Weiwei. “Jail is like being dropped into the bottom of the ocean. When you cannot hear your voice, there’s an illusion that you don’t have your voice.” 03 S.A.C.R.E.D. 2011-2013 Six-part work composed of Supper, Accusers, Cleansing, Ritual, Entropy, Doubt

THE RISE OF THE FAMILY OFFICE WORDS JAN VAN BUEREN & THOMAS MING

W E A L T H

Based on the latest version of the Wealth-X World Ultra Wealth Report (2015-2016), the number of affluent individuals — those with a net worth of $30 million or more — has grown to a total of 212,615. Collectively, this group has a total of $30 trillion in wealth. Wealth-X foresees 50 percent growth in the global affluent population through the year 2020, at which time 318,400 people are forecasted to mutually control more than $46.2 trillion. As wealth increases worldwide, so too does interest in family offices as many families consider using this type of wealth management service. As this interest waxes, many more companies also start offering multi-family office services. Defined as “privately controlled staff, employed within (or without) a dedicated structure that supports an affluent family with the organization, management and maintenance of all or some of their assets, needs and wishes,” family offices are able to offer a wide range of services to clients — much more than simply managing bankable investments. These types of companies also provide lifestyle support, e.g. yacht management, and advise on everything from philanthropy to real estate advice to legal matters. The distinguishing factor between singlefamily offices (SFOs) and multi-family offices (MFOs) is that MFOs are commercially operated and offer services to more than one family.

N A V I G A T O R M A N A G E M E N T

Establishing an SFO is very much a made-to-measure exercise. The family must develop its dedicated set up by itself. In which location do you establish it; what type of structure do you use; which services do you provide the family members with; at what cost? Professional advice is very useful to help answer all these questions. It also is common that business families work for a considerable number of years with an “embedded” family office; family office services delivered by staff employed within the family business. Alternatively, some families opt to first cooperate with an MFO to gain experience before they make the step towards establishing an SFO. What to consider when selecting a family office? Because of the costs of an SFO, most families opt for an MFO. As a family’s wealth and future wellbeing strongly depend on the choice of the right provider, the main challenge for those families is how to select the right provider. Within the MFO universe there is no “one size fits all” solution. Most jurisdictions neither protect nor regulate the use of the title “family office.” Therefore, any company can call itself a “multi-family office” without having any specific qualification or experience.

Most MFOs offer completely incomparable services. Some providers are specialized in philanthropic or wealth As there are many family office options, it is impossible to state how planning services, while others focus more on lifestyle wealthy one needs to be to use an MFO. Although there is no set management or administrative services. This different minimum, the use of an MFO is mostly considered by families with angle is often related to the origin of the family office and wealth of more than $25 million. Most families considering the use the experience of its founders. Even when MFOs offer of an SFO have wealth of at least $200 million dollars. mainly asset management services, significant differences

may occur between the providers. The type of client focused on, the size of a family’s wealth or the region out of which clients are serviced also vary widely from one provider to another. Where should your family office be located? The preservation and protection of wealth are often the main drivers behind the use of a family office. The location of the actual office should, therefore, be at the heart of the selection process. An MFO should preferably be located in a politically and financially stable jurisdiction such as Switzerland (a “safe haven”) in order to safeguard the wealth and wellbeing of the family. A family office that is located in the home country of the family might turn out to be the Achilles’ heel of the whole set up at exactly the moment when stability and protection are what the family needs. In practice, it is this kind of consideration that is often overseen or ignored by families, either because they have not been properly advised or because they simply consider a set-up in their home country as being more practical. What and why? The type of services sought by the family (“what”) is another important factor to consider, as most MFOs tend to focus on a specific selection of services, rather than on a wide array of them. It also is important that the family stakeholders establish what goals they actually seek to fulfil by hiring a family office (“why”). A family office may focus on giving the family insight into its financial situation or act as the coordinator of external advisors, but it also may specialize in more practical support. Taking the process seriously Which questions to ask when visiting different providers, what type of MFOs exist and what type of services they offer are important information that can take time to gather. Experience shows that families often do not know their own needs (the “what” and “why”). They therefore struggle to find the “right fit,” or the appropriate MFO that will offer them the best-suited services. Families often start their search with referrals from friends to the MFO they use. Here it is often forgotten that different families have different goals and needs in terms of MFO services, and that the “one size fits all” approach does not exist in the MFO industry. Finally, the personal connection one has with the MFO staff is extremely important as they become a part of the family’s life and usually remain in place for more than one generation. It is therefore important for families to carry out a thorough selection process and to visit and assess several providers before choosing the right MFO. Lying in a circle at the heart of the Aegean, the islands of the Cyclades sparkle with infinite appeal. Their steady winds, dramatic landscape and natural harbors make them an idyllic sailing destination. Each island is unique and surprisingly different, but they all share an astonishing wealth of historical sites and architectural wonders left by ancient civilizations during five millennia. From the cosmopolitan islands of Mykonos and Santorini to the lesser-known islands of Paros and Naxos, these islands abound with simplicity and charm.

MYKONOS Follow in the footsteps of Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis, whose seal of approval made the island of Mykonos a must-visit summer destination from the 1960s onwards. Today, the island is quite popular and remains broad-minded, attracting A-listers and the wealthy jet set for whom Mykonos is the Staint-Tropez of the eastern Mediterranean. The best times to visit are June and September, when it is busy enough to experience the island’s “boho” vibe, but not too crowded. Discover @ Mykonos Old Town As the sun sets over the horizon, an impressive hubbub fills the maze of alleyways throughout Mykonos Old Town (also known as Chora). Throughout the summer the outdoor Anemo Theatre, located in a large garden overlooking the town, hosts concerts and performances. Shop @ Luisa Beach on Psarou Beach Following a late lunch at Nammos, head to the boutique Luisa Beach. It offers eclectic beachwear from both local and international brands. Pick up a matching kaftan and bikini to wear with locally-made Greek sandals. The shop also has a second boutique in Mykonos Town; it carries men’s clothing and accessories. Soho-Soho is another designer boutique with boho-chic island attire for both men and women. Finish off the look with a stunning piece of jewelry from Kessaris. For Italian design, Bollicine is in an old Mykonian bakery. This chic boutique offers an abundance of aperitifs, cocktails and champagnes to accompany the fine wares for sale. An area within the boutique showcases exclusive collaborations with artists and designers.

Explore @ Dragonisi Dragonisi is a tiny islet lying just off the south coast. The perfect anchorage for swimming and exploring, certain times of year the beautiful caves also are a breeding ground for rare monk seals. Those looking for a little watersports action should head to the less-developed northern shore where the winds make for ideal windsurfing conditions. Dine @ Aegean Poets and The Plate This sophisticated island is famous for its hip bars and restaurants. Sip an ouzo in the cafés that line the colorful harbor of Mykonos (also known as Hora), or visit Mykonos Town where you will find some seriously good restaurants nestled among the alleyways. For a hedonistic long lunch head to Nammos on Psarou Beach — the Greek alternative to Le Club 55 in St Tropez. Your sedentary long lunch will no doubt segue into dancing on the tables late into the afternoon. Alternatively, Scorpios is a restaurant/ beach club with a chill vibe. Flanked by two bays (Kavos and Paraga) the driftwood day beds and soul-jazz tunes make for one of the best beach clubs in the Mediterranean. Seafood lovers should take the tender to tie up alongside Spilia at Kalafatis Beach. Tucked in a cave-like cove literally on the water, live urchins and lobsters are plucked straight from a saltwater pool right in front of you, bringing a new meaning to the word fresh. Try the famous lobster and sea urchin pasta. Sip cocktails at Caprice while the DJ spins to the setting sun. Follow on with dinner and a party at Sea Satin. This restaurant is set under the windmills; request a table by the water’s edge.

Another restaurant that should be high on your list for dinner ashore is Aegean Poets at Mykonos Blu. Located above Psarou Bay, the restaurant is a refuge away from the nightlife of Mykonos Harbor. For those looking for a party, the Design Hotel Mykonos Theoxenia is one of the island’s hippest hotels and plays host to The Plate restaurant. Overlooking the waterfront, the menu is full of some of the best Mediterranean dishes on the island. Spa @ Royal Myconian Resort & Thalasso Spa If you can fit in a detox day, or simply fancy a treatment ashore, head for the Royal Myconian Resort & Thalasso Spa. Its unique treatment program uses mineral enriched seawater, known for its curative and restorative effect. Alternatively, for a daily dose of yoga, make your way to Scorpios. Get there early for morning yoga before spending the day flitting between the restaurant and beach (sumptuous beach beds included). Anchor @ Ornos Bay Situated southwest on the island, Ornos Bay is one of the most popular anchorages as it’s sheltered from the Meltemi (the strong, dry north winds of the Aegean). Take the tender ashore to some of the best beaches along the south coast. For parties, head to Paradise Beach; for a quieter affair, head to Platis Gialos. Alternatively, Buddha-Bar Beach at the Santa Marina resort is located right in Ornos Bay. Glamorous yet relaxed, ask for a table overlooking the ocean and enjoy Asian fusion at its best.

SANTORINI Despite being one of the most popular of the Cyclades archipelago, the quintessential Greek isle of Santorini is a haven of peace and tranquility. Born of fire and brimstone, the vertiginous, crescent-shaped island is perched on the edge of a volcano. Best known for spectacular sunset views over the calderas, sheer cliffs capped by hilltop towns frame the deep harbor where the daily activity of ships and yachts provides the island with thousands of visitors every summer. You’ll want to be on deck for the spectacular arrival into the Port. Go ashore @ Oia Catch the famous Santorini sunset at Oia. The ultimate Greek island village is made up of white houses and domed churches perched over the lip of the caldera. Be seen @ Hasapiko Housed in a former butcher’s shop in Oia, the lively bar at Hasapiko has become an island institution. Dine @ Homeric Poems Santorini is better known for its cocktail and dining scene, more than for nightlife. Many of the best restaurants are conveniently located in the island’s top hotels. Homeric Poems is one such establishment. It offers a cluster of stylish villas and its restaurant, which sits on the edge of the Firostefani cliff, provides spectacular views over the caldera. Further, heart-stopping views can be found at the restaurant at Santorini Grace. Mediterranean-fusion cuisine is best enjoyed on the cliff-top terrace, the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the famed sunsets. The main port and island capital Parikia can, on first impression, seem rather disappointing, but step behind the seafront and you will find cobbled streets and a pretty town. Chrissi Akti (also known as Golden Beach) on the southeast coast is a stretch of golden sand, just shy of a mile, backed by tavernas. It has an offshore wind and so, like many of the beaches on Paros, is a popular spot for windsurfing. Santa Maria is another famed beach with clear water and shallow sand dunes. Anchor @ Kolimbithres Divided by smooth giant rocks, Kolimbithres is probably the prettiest beach on the island.

NAXOS Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades archipelago, yet is lesser known. Adorned with small coves, countless chapels and hundreds of churches, most of which are Byzantine, the island is perfect for those wishing to step ashore and explore. Culture @ Chora In the capital of Chora you will find a Venetian castle and a variety of mansions built by the Venetians between the 12th and 16th centuries. The village of Apiranthos also boasts Venetian architecture and a Venetian tower crowns the marble-paved streets. Anchor @ Kastraki At just less than five-miles long, the beach at Kastraki has won awards for its clean sand and clear waters. The coastline is brimming with some of the longest sandy beaches in the Cyclades. For great windsurfing conditions, head to Ayois Yeoryios.
