96 Wealth Luxury Subscription Services In today’s fast-paced, easy access world of Internet shopping and overnight delivery, we want what we want, and we want it now. Ease of access is a top priority and luxury goods are getting in the mix with luxury subscription services that provide one-stopshop options, door-to-door service and much more. 100 In the Spirit (of Innovation) In this day and age, it’s not just about the product — it’s about the experience. Everyone from restaurants to gyms to online stores are offering their clients upgraded experiences. AULD LANG SYNE (TIMES LONG PAST)

Gentle Reader, Since we last crossed paths in the pages of Navigator, I have been blessed to have seen the comings and goings of many meaningful milestones. It brings me so much joy when my son chooses to return home from university for the holidays. As always, my wife Mariette crafted the perfect family holiday. She prepared an amazing Christmas feast. The house, the tree, and the day were worthy of a Norman Rockwell painting; it was that perfect. It was one of those days when you feel lucky to be alive and you know you’re in exactly the right place at the right time.

It’s ironic how doing something so big can make you feel so small. But it’s not an insignificant kind of small, quite the opposite; it’s the kind of small that makes you really appreciate the little things. Summiting a mountain is memorable, but it is the simple, unexpected moments spent with my son on that trip that will be played over and over in my memory. Those unprompted conversations and revelations that made me appreciate how much I admire and respect the person our son has become. (Despite the fact that he tried to kill me in the process).

With Christmas and the New Year properly celebrated, and my 60th birthday looming, my son and I journeyed to Africa for an ambitious six-day summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. While I had been nagging Matthew about working out, hiking and exercising, it turns out I personally should have done more than three Orange Theory classes to prep for this adventure. During parts of this jaunt, I was convinced Matthew had a plan to expedite his inheritance — Kilimanjaro is a really high mountain!

Much like summiting the highest peak on a continent, there is nothing like watching another decade roll over on the odometer to bring your own life into a fresh perspective. Having survived my foray to Africa, I returned home to a surprise 60th birthday party. Friends and family from near and far showed up and succeeded in making me acutely aware that I am not nearly as astute as I used to be — so much for older and wiser. And with so many personal milestones, it seems like the perfect time to take up the torch and create new milestones for Northrop & Johnson.

We are now settled in our new home at Lauderdale Marine Center in Fort Lauderdale. The largest marine facility of its type in North America, we believe we will deliver clients superior service from this outstanding venue. Michael Payne, Director of our European offices, is putting the final touches on the Monaco office. As fortunate as I feel to have such an amazing family at home, I am equally grateful for the entire N&J team. Last year was a phenomenal one and 2018 is off to an amazing start. I look forward to celebrating the good times ahead with you and your families as well. And there’s a hand my trusty friend! And give me a hand o’ thine! And we’ll take a right good-will draught, for auld lang syne. Wishing you a healthful, prosperous, loving and fun 2018. Carpe diem,

K

WALK US THROUGH THE STAGES OF A PROPER REFIT? WORDS GEORGE WHITEHOUSE DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, LAUDERDALE MARINE CENTER

Plan — proper upfront planning is key to a successful refit. A project plan should be developed for any refit, no matter how big or small. Make sure this plan includes a scope of work (task list), required specifications for each task, and a list of materials with lead times to source those materials. The plan should also include a list of associated risks and contingency plans. Project dependencies — those tasks that cannot be started before another task is first completed — also should be noted. Select a Yard — there are two models for yards: full-service and marketplace-model yards. At full-service yards, the work is completed by the yard, and outside contractor invoices will be marked up by the yard. You also may face other fees, such as gate fees, for bringing in outside expertise. At marketplace-model yards, like Lauderdale Marine Center, the vessel is free to choose a preferred contractor team for the work with no additional mark-ups or fees.

Commence Work — once work begins, the project should be managed daily. Track tasks and make necessary contingency plans as needed. Be sure to check the work and verify the quality. Document the results of work inspections and, as the project goes along, sign off on completed tasks. Communicate — constant communication between all parties ensures the success of any project. Captains, owners, crew, project management, contractors and the yard all want the project to be successful. When the entire team understands the status of the project, everyone benefits.

How can owners help to ensure refits go as smoothly as possible? The biggest component of guaranteeing a successful refit is ensuring owners are realistic about the amount of time and money that will be required to complete the scope of work. For small or large refit projects, owners should consider hiring a project manager. Project managers are able to direct all of the intricacies of a refit project — from sourcing parts and overseeing contractors to helping ensure the project stays on time and on budget. A project manager will safeguard the refit’s technical expertise as needed, especially if the scope of work includes changes to the vessel’s structure.

What is the most important aspect of a yacht refit? A: Understanding the entire work list within How can captains and crew help the given time frame is first, followed closely to ensure refits go as smoothly as possible? by choosing the proper yard and vendors. SPOTLIGHT

M I C H A E L PAY N E Q: What is your background within the A: My yachting background began as a boy yachting industry and how did you come on my family boats — considerably more to be a yacht broker? modest sizes than we deal with now, I might add. Being raised on the south coast of England, I was always around boats.

I later moved to the South of France and after a period as a yacht captain, I took an opportunity to start as a yacht broker about 30 years ago and I never looked back.

Michael Payne, Managing Director Europe

N A V I G A T O R S P O T L I G H T

What is your best advice to a first-time yacht buyer? My advice would be simple: seek an experienced yacht broker with a solid reputation. The broker will spend valuable time with a client prior to any first-time purchase to take them by the hand and educate them. Also, identify what is the ideal first-time yacht. This is based on the many aspects of owning a yacht, whether it’s a new or a brokerage yacht, knowledge of the market and yacht values, how the yacht will be used — privately or would charter and revenue be a consideration — the running costs, the crew required, etc. What is the most important facet to a successful yacht sale? Being totally involved and committed from day one with all aspects of the sale. From initial viewings to the offer process, the condition survey and the final completion closing and beyond.

What, in your opinion, are the biggest trends happening in yacht design? It goes without saying that the environmental issues are on everyone’s list — builders and owners take that seriously when designing a yacht. We are seeing many clients looking for a less formal design, with interiors open to exterior spaces, less classical design and more family-oriented layouts. Many yachts are incorporating dedicated towing gear in order to accommodate large chase tenders. Owners now want something totally different from the norm and designers need to be able to push the boundaries to the max. What is the current state of yachting in Europe? We are seeing a good buoyant trend in the U.S. and 2017 saw a high volume of sales, especially at Northrop & Johnson. That trend stimulates Euro sales and the stronger last quarter results in Europe makes us optimistic and positive for 2018. Good inventory, correctly priced, is always the challenge. The geopolitical unrest remains a constant threat to many businesses, including yachting.

What makes N&J stand out among other brokerage companies? Recently coming from another leading large brokerage firm, it was extremely refreshing for me to meet new and motivated brokers and staff at Northrop & Johnson; all have considerable experience and track records. The company is headed by Kevin Merrigan, whose leadership is a major factor in the success of Northrop & Johnson. His energy and commitment to the teams around the world drives everyone in the firm to go that extra mile. What are your five must-have features on a yacht? There are many, but my top five, in no particular order, are: • Comfortable crew quarters — this makes crew happy, which makes for happy owner and guests • Ample and well-laid-out deck areas for entertaining and relaxation • A beach club with easy access to the sea • Seaworthy and reliable tenders • An excellent chef in the galley

THE LOWDOWN ON THE HIGHLIFE One of Malta’s premier seaside spots for dining, Caviar & Bull is perfectly perched on St. George’s Bay, overlooking the glistening waters (01). Diners can expect contemporary Mediterranean fare created by the award-winning Maltese chef Marvin Gauci. In his youth, Gauci worked at a restaurant where he cut his teeth in the kitchen. He then worked his way up the ranks at various restaurants and in 1997 moved to Ireland to pursue a culinary career. Eventually, Gauci returned to Malta where he opened his first restaurant. Gauci now runs five restaurants, three of which are located in Malta, including Caviar & Bull. Gauci’s epicurean range runs the gamut of cuisines, but at his Maltese restaurant Caviar & Bull the menu is chock full of fresh, modern Med-style dishes that are sure to delight. Under the eye of Gauci is head chef Gianluca Lovero, who, together with Alice Guerrini who runs the front of the house, creates an exhilarating gastronomic experience for diners. The restaurant’s interior style is simple and elegant (03), allowing the stunning views of the sea and surrounding area and the food to take center stage (02).

03

The menu at Caviar & Bull is enchanting. Every dish uses locally sourced ingredients (04) and the attention to detail is second to none. The tasting menus available are well suited for sharing. Try the seared wagyu beef carpaccio, the tiger prawns “ancient tempura,” or the Applewood house-smoked salmon (05). Other standout items include the sea bass iceberg flambé, the 200-degree flash-seared foie gras and Gauci’s signature “lobster popcorn.” The dessert menu features white chocolate and basil panacotta, chocolate fondant and vanilla crème brûlée. Along with stunning scenery and incredible food, the restaurant offers a cocktail menu with “a molecular twist.” Furthermore, the wine list doesn’t disappoint with plenty of options for pairings with the delectable menu items. Caviar & Bull is established in Malta as a distinguished option for fine dining for those with impeccable taste. Open for dinner daily from 6:30 to 11:00 p.m. and for lunch on Sundays from noon to 3:00 p.m., there’s nothing better than tendering ashore to the Corinthia Hotel in St. George’s Bay, St. Julian’s to enjoy a one-ofa-kind Maltese meal concocted by a Maltese master chef in a stunning setting.

The Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke is home of the original, island-favorite Painkiller. Created and perfected here, the Painkiller is a signature drink of BVI and a must-have libation while in town. Dubbed the Soggy Dollar because of the sailors who’d swim ashore to grab a beverage and pay with wet cash, the Soggy Dollar is a tried-and-true BVI legend that simply must be visited.

Foxy’s is another famed haunt on Jost Van Dyke. The beach bar located in Great Harbour is a classic must-visit spot and the restaurant’s annual New Year’s Eve/Old Year’s Eve parties are legendary. Be sure to down a glass of Foxy’s Firewater rum when you’re visiting. It’s sure to set the tempo for the rest of your day. In Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands, there is plenty to see and do, including dozens of scenic beaches and Tortola Pier Park, a frequent stop for ships with plenty of shopping and restaurants.

The BVI capital Road Town also is located on this island. Road Town is home to Charlies at the Moorings Marina, which is renowned for its Italian fare with Caribbean flair. Located at the Mariner’s Inn, the restaurant offers impeccable views of the Inner Harbour and all the boats floating about as well as the cruise ship pier. If relaxation is on your to-do list, be sure to visit the Amara Spa for a rejuvenating service while you’re in town.

Virgin Gorda is one of the most breathtaking islands you can find. From white sand beaches, volcanic boulders, lush greenery and azure-color seas, the stunning scenery will have you falling in love. The Baths, a unique collection of gigantic boulders, is a must-see site with secluded rock pools and beaches for visitors to explore. Then, before hopping to the next island, enjoy a blend of Asian and Latin cuisine at Coco Maya Restaurant. Located on Anegada, the low-lying only coral island in BVI’s volcanic chain, Anegada Beach Club is one of the newest hot spots in the BVI. From excursions and activities to “glamping” in beachside luxury tents, The Beach Club offers experiences unlike any you’ve had before. While visiting, try your hand at kite surfing, sport fishing, water sports, bone fishing; explore the island on bicycles, or go snorkeling for a peek below the waterline. Here you’ll find mazes, tunnels and drops among the reef, rich with marine life.

Venture out to dine at one of the Anegada’s several infamous restaurants such as Cow Wreck Beach Bar and Grill, where former U.S. President Barack Obama and Sir Richard Branson have enjoyed a meal. With conch fritters acclaimed to be the best in the BVI, they specialize in lobster, conch and fish and fuel their grill with local wood. Norman Island is the perfect place to moor the yacht for an evening in the pristine beauty of the bight — one of the most beautiful and safest anchorages in the BVI. The bight has more than 100 moorings available for guests to use and is well-known for snorkel and dive sites such as the Indians and the Caves. The uninhabited island is a privately owned 610acre area full of hiking trails and a white-sand beach where Pirates Bight Restaurant is located.

01

Hollywood’s love of British actors is well known; chiseljawed and sophisticated, with dry wit and a cut-glass Oxford accent, they add charm and color to a host of films and television series. One of Britain’s most successful television exports is very far from this stereotype, however. His name is Jeremy Clarkson; his television Show “Top Gear” is known as the most-watched show… in the world. So great was Clarkson’s popularity that when he left the BBC, Amazon Prime outbid Netflix and every other bidder to secure a new show with him and his new production company. The show was to be called “The Grand Tour.” As a British yacht broker with a great passion for producing documentary yacht presentation videos; I have been a fan of Clarkson for many years, so when his production company needed a yacht for “The Grand Tour” I was delighted that Fiona Maureso, Northrop & Johnson’s European Charter Retail Director, passed the enquiry on to me. The brief was that Clarkson would need a large, spectacular superyacht from which to introduce Bugatti’s new supercar, the Chiron. He wanted a yacht that would ooze glamor, offer outstanding performance and be an imposing presence in the port of Saint-Tropez where the filming was to take place. One yacht stood out to me as the perfect candidate: a brand new, 165-foot Mangusta called DA VINCI. The yacht literally was launched the same week “The Grand Tour” contacted us. Northrop & Johnson was entrusted to market her for charter, and the owner and his team immediately recognized the opportunity to present DA VINCI to a huge international audience by allowing us to broker a deal with the TV production company.

03

04

With a total of 10,000 horsepower from four MTU 2000 series engines, DA VINCI certainly offered the kind of power that Clarkson was looking for. This is a new engine arrangement from Overmarine, which previously built this model with three MTU 4000 series engines. The more efficient engineering provides significantly greater fuel economy while barely affecting the performance; this makes DA VINCI one of the most desirable models on the charter market today. I experienced this performance during the summer when I filmed Northrop & Johnson’s promotional documentary video of the yacht, but I also experienced another aspect of DA VINCI that was to be essential on the day of filming and went on to make her such a successful and popular charter yacht: her crew. Anyone who has enjoyed relaxing as a charter guest on a superyacht will know that good crew is as important as the yacht itself, and DA VINCI benefits from some of the best in the business. Carefully selected for their experience on board this specific model of yacht, every crewmember was a pleasure to work with and went above and beyond his or her duties to ensure that the promotional video was a success. This was no mean feat, especially considering the fact that our promotional video was fitted between critical days: the yacht being commissioned after launch and the first charter visit on board. Despite the long hours of filming and constant requests for the crew to dress tables, cook spectacular show plates and prepare DA VINCI’s armada of water toys for use, everybody worked tirelessly, happily and with pride. The filming of the television show “The Grand Tour” would be a walk in the park compared with this baptism of fire!

07

The interiors of this yacht also are worthy of note and add to the sense of glamor that Clarkson was looking for. Maxine Tissenbaum was commissioned to create a relaxing but sophisticated ambience; she made a wonderful job of it. A combination of rich marbles and exclusive materials generate a feeling of exclusivity that charter guests will revel in, making for a unique and unforgettable charter experience. DA VINCI has a total of five staterooms, including a sumptuous full-beam master stateroom; her spacious main deck salon is a tribute to Tissenbaum’s understanding of how to use prestigious materials to create a relaxing environment. For “The Grand Tour,” Clarkson was to be filmed having breakfast on deck, and the producer was spoiled for choice during the pre-production walkthrough. From the secluded seating area on the bow next to the Jacuzzi tub to the shaded dining table on the flybridge, the Mangusta 165 seems to have endless deck space. Eventually the aft deck was chosen for the shoot, and Clarkson was filmed relaxing in one of the sumptuous arm chairs reading a newspaper with the stunning setting of Saint-Tropez behind him. The spacious aft deck of DA VINCI easily accommodated the entire film crew.

08 09

At Northrop & Johnson, we pride ourselves on finding the right yacht for the right client, whether that be for sale or charter. Matching DA VINCI with Jeremy Clarkson for “The Grand Tour” was a winning combination for all involved. The production company simply couldn’t have wished for a better yacht to film on, the yacht owner enjoyed incomparable promotion for his vessel and I finally got to meet the man who has inspired so many of my videos. For the first time since 2008, there were more than three million business aviation flights in North America this past year. While manufacturers continue to slowly regain their footing in terms of new orders for private jets, the recovery is being driven by the plethora of new ways you can access business aviation. Charter continues to be popular, but the star of the market has been jet cards. In the past ten years, the number of providers has more than doubled and there are now more than 250 programs on the market. While these membership programs have been around for nearly two decades, today’s programs are much more diverse. Whereas jet cards used to come in two flavors — 25 or 50 hours — you can now find programs starting at as few as ten hours (Air Partner or Nicholas Air) and ranging up timetable and price scales to $1 million or more (Delta Private Jets, VistaJet). At one time, card programs all required flyers to pay the entire amount of the program up front, but today pay-as-you-go options (Jet Linx, Wheels Up, SkyJet) are available. It’s also now possible to get a broker-based jet card with guaranteed Wi-Fi without a premium (Sentient Jet). Of course, it’s not just jets. Wheels Up, StraightLine Private Air, Paramount Business Jets and Nicholas Air all offer programs using turboprops, which provide affordable solutions for short hops.

The currency of jet cards also is evolving. Airstream Jets’ Distance Card provides pricing based on mileage instead of flight hours while Executive AirShare uses a day-based formula. Last year, EcoJets launched a card providing credits of up to 35 percent onto a MasterCard or Visa debit card you can use anywhere for anything. You earn credits by booking at least a week in advance, using pre-2000 aircraft and making qualifying roundtrips. Put another way, for a $100,000 trip, you could get back up to $35,000 from its published rates. In terms of lifestyle perks, Sentient Jet now gives its members more than $125,000 in discounts and freebies from partners. Another twist comes from Omaha-based Jet Linx Aviation. Unlike many programs, Jet Linx doesn’t sell nationally — it’s only available in 14 airport-based markets. In each market it manages aircraft for owners and sells the time they aren’t using their planes for jet cards. The key difference: each location has its own private lounge, so you don’t have to go through the FBO. With limited traffic, expect your favorite libations waiting for you upon arrival for the flight. Upon return, your car will be detailed, ready and waiting with the air conditioning or heat (whichever temperature setting is deemed appropriate) already set. The company plans to add New York, Boston, San Jose and Los Angeles to its repertoire this year. Of course, it’s not all about jet cards. More airlines have come to believe that private aviation can be a valuable part of their offerings for corporate accounts and High Net Worth travelers.

Delta Private Jets last year introduced Porsche transfers for customers connecting from its private flights to Delta Air Lines flights. Lufthansa continues to offer Lufthansa Private Jet, Korean Air has a small fleet of private jets — including a Boeing Business Jet, which is popular for charter trips to China and Southeast Asia. Qatar Airways is taking delivery of more Gulfstream G650s for Qatar Executive while Deer Jet — a sister to Hainan Airlines — last year added a private Boeing 787 for charter. And it’s not just airlines dipping into the private aviation sector. Crystal Cruises launched an 84-seat luxury Boeing 777-200LR capable of flying 15 hours nonstop. It includes flatbed seats, a private dining area and a bar. There also is a Bombardier Global Express for charter. If you don’t need a full jet, there are more options to fly privately by the seat. In Europe, SurfAir has launched scheduled flights using private jet facilities between London City Airport and Zurich, while JetClass sells seats on scheduled private jet flights between more than a dozen European cities. On the U.S. side of the pond, JetSuiteX is expanding its scheduled private jet-like service in California and Las Vegas.

CHARTER CONTINUES TO BE POPULAR, BUT THE STAR OF THE MARKET HAS BEEN JET CARDS

02 RM 53-01 Tourbillon Pablo Mac Donough Richard Mille has created a cable-suspended movement requiring two separate baseplates. The peripheral baseplate is fixed to the case. The central baseplate is linked to the peripheral baseplate by cables and incorporates wheels with the caliber and the winding mechanism. The central baseplate rests on two braided steel cables just 0.27 millimeters in diameter. These cables are anchored by four tensioners. The watchmaker is responsible for tensioning the cables by rotating a spline screw located at the center of each tensioner. By ensuring even distribution of tension, this pulley system guarantees perfect balance of the whole mechanism.

Classic Redux Changes just don’t happen in menswear. Although the runway usually conveys an extreme reality, the truth is most men won’t wear runway-ready apparel day-to-day. Most gentlemen keep their wardrobes on a steady course and update it with singular items. It’s not practical to invest in exquisite tailoring and fabrications only to find that it’s out of style six months down the road. So, it’s no surprise that the men’s spring collections are doubling down on enduring style — the previously coined term “normcore” — for 2018. Brands like Hermès and Brunello Cucinelli have always banked on the stability of the classics. At their cores, they sell pieces that stand the test of time. Season after season, they produce gentlemen’s go-to items, which let the man take center stage not the clothing.

02

Hermès (01) kept the classics classic with 1950s, Leave-it-to-Beaver flair at its Paris show. Trousers went baggy and were worn with varsity jackets. Anoraks and oversized slickers gave a practical component to looks. Often Hermès shows an uber-luxe crocodile jacket and this season was no exception; two versions of the jacket came in cardamom and matte black. The palette of cinnamon, golds and browns gave an autumn air to the show even though sandals were worn throughout. Brunello Cucinelli (02) created a fashion universe based on the Italian lifestyle. Not interested in the runway to present its world, the brand opts for a look-book. This time around, Brunello Cucinelli mixed sporty vibes with separates. Tennis sweaters under linen suits and sneakers and Birkenstocks give a casual tone to these luxury pieces. At its core, the brand is renowned for weekend wear of CEOs and titans of industry. If you’re looking to update, the one must-have item is a pair of suede kicks in a pearl grey, like these from Brunello Cucinelli. But, no need to give up last spring’s white kicks; they are still looking strong and lend a casual attitude to linen suits.

02

01

The menswear message for spring 2018 definitely is stay the course; you can’t go wrong by adding a touch of modernity to the classics, but be sure to add a pair of kicks. 02

Wearing the Pants Women’s pantsuits have a storied past. In the 1920s, pants were all but outlawed for women, who just didn’t wear them. In the 1930s Katharine Hepburn defiantly wore high-waist trousers with “man-ish” shoes and was called “strong willed” for her unconventional clothing choices. When Hepburn was a child, she dressed like a boy because to her, boys were able to have more fun and she wanted to join in. As she grew into adulthood, her style became as iconic and represented women of strength and resolve. Today, Hepburn’s rebellious fashion sense lives on. Although pantsuits are not revolutionary, they are very relevant considering the “MeToo” movement of late 2017 and early 2018. Hillary Clinton was an unwitting fashion influencer when she wore pantsuits as an equalizer to the male candidates she ran against in the 2016 election in order to keep the public’s focus on the issues instead of her wardrobe. Her pantsuits became a rally cry for women.

This spring’s fashion options were not available to Hepburn in her heyday, but many luxury brands and fashion houses are capitalizing on the ubiquitous suiting concept. From the magpie masculinity of Gucci’s hot pink three-button jacket and pants (03) to Kiton’s more traditional and super luxe suit (04), pants are everywhere on the runway. Dior did it in a patchwork denim with a 70s vibe and added a doublebreasted jacket (05). The silhouettes are big, and the fabrics are sumptuous at the Italian brand Agnona. At the spring show, models wore balloon-leg trousers — very much like Hepburn — paired with a long vest and white t-shirt in soft yellows and shades of dove grey (06). Tomas Maier’s namesake collection has a wealth of cool-girl options, including bold florals with an athleisure zip jacket (07) and Indian saritype dresses worn over a soft trouser (07).

One of the many cultural revolutions that has emerged throughout the last two years is women’s desire for equal treatment in all realms. Pantsuits are fashion’s answer to this cultural occurrence, revamping a commonly worn piece of clothing traditionally associated with men and offering them to women in an array of styles — enough to make Katharine Hepburn proud. 06

OW N E R’ S S U I T E SERENITY WORDS JANINE ST.DENIS

The 122-foot (37.2m) Flagship motor yacht SERENITY is a true testament to her name. Built in 1993, but fully refitted in 2017, SERENITY offers guests a tranquil oasis from which to explore the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Eight guests are welcomed aboard for the ultimate luxury adventure — which is exactly what her owners wanted. SERENITY is their first yacht; they purchased her in 2016 and have been delighted by her ever since. Avid charterers, the owners of SERENITY were keen to explore the incredible waters from Seattle to South Alaska; for them, owning their own yacht was the next step.

They spend between six and eight weeks a year on board in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Previously named TALOS, the owners dubbed their yacht SERENITY because “that is how we feel when we’re aboard. She is the perfect yacht for this region,” her owners say. There are lots of enclosed spaces, like the flybridge — which can be alfresco — and the skylounge, that allow you to enjoy the sights regardless of conditions. The region in which the yacht cruises is unlike the traditional tropical yachting hot spots. Which is just how her owners like it. They’re often on board in Alaska. First thing in the morning, the owner will enjoy a run on the yacht’s treadmill, then the adventures begin.

SERENITY’s 29-foot Alaskan-style fishing boat, the SERENE MACHINE, is fully outfitted for exploration. It is perfectly suited to be independent of the main yacht for the day and comfortably accommodates eight people. The SERENE MACHINE has a standup day head and is enclosed in order to protect from the weather. The SERENE MACHINE is perfect to take guests ashore for hikes, get up-close-and-personal with glaciers, cast a line and hope to reel in the big one, and cruise alongside pods of orcas and other incredible wildlife. “We’ve had it only one season,” the owners say, “and it opened up the utility of the yacht in ways you never imagined.”

One of the owners’ favorite aspects of the yacht is the on-deck master. “It’s a huge plus as opposed to being down stairs,” they say, but also mention, “The yacht has great spaces for gathering with everyone on board, but it also has places perfect for some quiet time to read a book or watch scenery go by.”

03 04

02 The waters of Alaska and Puget Sound are the preferred retreat 03 SERENITY sleeps eight guests and includes a spacious on-deck master 04 Casual elegance accommodates guests in style 05 The Pacific Northwest is an exquisite charter destination 05

SERENITY’s owners love Alaska and Puget Sound; this region is their favorite cruising destination. “The beauty and the wildlife are incomparable to anywhere we’ve ever been,” they say. “From the islands and changing nature of the landscape to seeing whales, otters, eagles and bears, to going fishing and crabbing, there’s so much to do — we love enjoying the many things that part of the country has to offer.” Another favorite cruising location for SERENITY’s owners is New England along the Penobscot Bay of Maine and farther north into Canada. They also enjoy The Bahamas, specifically the Exumas — they really love the fishing there. But they maintain that no matter where else they have cruised, Alaska is by far the most unique. “It’s constantly changing and always surprising you,” they maintain, adding, “There’s one spot in Red Bluff Bay where you can nose the yacht to a tidal waterfall then cruise a couple hundred yards and spot a bear fishing in a meadow, then in a few more hundred yards, you drop the shrimp pods to catch dinner.” SERENITY is the perfect yacht in the perfect location for her owners. They enjoy every moment aboard and they offer her for charter, allowing guests to relish the luxury and incredible location that go hand-in-hand with SERENITY. “She was on the charter market when we bought her,” the owners say. “We expected to be aboard between six and eight weeks a year in Alaska and with her already consistent charter following, it made sense for us to make her available to others in those incredible waters.

The responses from clients who cruise in that area are always the same — they are blown away. Unless you’ve spent a lot of time up there, it’s unlike anything you’ve experienced before. We also get a lot of compliments on our incredible crew, but what guests talk about most are their experiences in the hidden bays in which they anchor, and the incredible opportunities SERENE MACHINE has opened up.” Charter guests get to enjoy everything from fishing to wildlife spotting — “one group of charter guests were out on SERENE MACHINE when a pod of orcas came by,” the owners say. “One of the whales was swimming on its back under the boat, getting a belly scratch from the keel.” Another favorite memory for guests is cruising past glaciers and picking up a piece of floating ice for cocktails that evening. The captain and crew of SERENITY further enhance the onboard experience. From the captain with a 20-year Navy career and lots of big-boat experience, to the chef who creates incredible Alaskan feasts from the fresh fish caught by the guests that day, the crew up the ante aboard SERENITY, ensuring an enjoyable, five-star experience for all. After all, yachting is all about having fun! “We love being on the water,” the owners of SERENITY say. And their yacht allows them total flexibility and total peacefulness. “We love to anchor out in a beautiful bay with nothing around us but nature.”

If you were considering a long-weekend escape to California’s wine country, Sonoma County might not be the first area that comes to mind. Sandwiched between the better-known Napa Valley to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Sonoma County has long been home to celebrated vintners, but a recent culinary influx has left the once sleepy county rivaling its better-known neighbor. The two wine-growing regions offer a very different welcome to visiting oenophiles. Acclimatize to Sonoma County’s laid-back lifestyle with a stop in Healdsburg before heading west, working your way along the Russian River that flows through the county all the way to the ocean. Along the way are wineries for tastings, quaint places to dine, and plenty of natural wonders to explore. Pillow talk From winery-owned guesthouses to luxury boutique hotels, the influx of upscale San Franciscans to Sonoma County has led to a marked increase in the supply of stylish and comfortable accommodations for the better-heeled traveler. If you can visit during the start or end of Cabernet season (harvest) when the weather is still warm, you will have your choice of rooms, tables, tastings and spas. Spend a few nights in the historic 19th century town of Healdsburg in the north of Sonoma County. Flanked by the Dry Creek, Russian River and Alexander Valley, the town is a popular destination for oenophiles and has become a hub for wine-country fare. Set in the historic town square, Hotel Healdsburg is a welcoming and contemporary boutique hotel. Go for one of their oversized rooms with décor details that complement the property’s picturesque surroundings.

If you are planning a spring visit to Sonoma County, then try and coincide with Charlie Palmer’s annual Pigs & Pinot event – a charity event hosted at the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Dry Creek Kitchen. For those looking for 19thcentury grandeur, the Victorian mansion Madrona Manor is just a few minutes from downtown Healdsburg. Set in eight wooded acres overlooking Dry Creek Valley, the hotel is suffused with character and charm. Book into one of the Schoolhouse Suites, on the edge of the property, complete with Jacuzzi and private deck area. In stark contrast to its antique furnishings and décor, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant delivers a contemporary menu, inspired by the estate’s garden produce. For those looking to get closer to nature on the shores of the Russian River, AutoCamp is camping without sacrificing a whit of comfort (glamping in its highest form). Customdesigned Airstream trailers and spacious tents the size of small buildings blend beautiful design and luxury with nature. The Timber Cove Resort has always been a soughtafter retreat and a few years ago the 1960s property was respectfully renovated, keeping many of the original features and combining them with contemporary design touches. Perched on the Pacific Coast just outside the small town of Jenner, this coastal retreat boasts stunning sea views and is surrounded by more than 25 acres of rugged coastline and a backdrop of redwood trees. After a day exploring, foraging, hiking (guided), or even kayaking, retire to the property’s restaurant, Coast Kitchen, one of the best on the North Coast.

Eat, Drink & Dance Drinking wine is obviously de rigueur when in Sonoma County, and the choice of vineyards and tastings are plenty. Wineries have deep roots in the valley’s culture; it is, after all, where California’s wine industry began. Vineyards sprawl across foothills and ridges, backed by parklands. Sip a dry rosé while seated in the vineyards by the winemaker’s home, sample zinfandel by the vats from which it was produced, taste chardonnay from aged barrels or pinots by the river; Sonoma Valley is made up of varying terrain, diverse soils and microclimates with several stunning varietals grown for a broad portfolio, making it a haven for oenophiles.

For a chilled afternoon tasting, fans of cabernets should drop by Gundlach Bundschu. The family-run winery has a low-key atmosphere and tastings are offered in the stunning picnic grounds of the winery. If you are lucky enough to be in the area in June, you might find yourself sipping chilled gewürztraminer while listening to Coachella-style bands at the Huichica Music Festival, hosted by the fifth generation of the Bundschu family on the grassy hillside of their 300-acre farm. Set in the foothills of Sonoma Mountain, the Benziger Family Winery is one of the most successful biodynamic vineyards in California. The farm follows biodynamic principles to produce rich red blends from the estate-grown grapes. The sister winery, Imagery Estate, also is worth a visit for its award-winning wines from rarely grown grapes.

Hungarian-born Count Agoston Haraszthy first launched the Buena Vista winery in 1857. Listed as a Californian Historic Landmark, Buena Vista’s tasting room pours several varietals, but the best way to soak up the atmosphere For a smaller vineyard tour, sip away at the stunningly is to enjoy a tasting with the winery’s delicious picnic restored 19th-century homestead Scribe Winery. Reserve hamper in the cobblestone courtyard. your wine tasting late afternoon and follow on with a lavish dinner paired with the estate-grown chardonnay.

For a break from the grape, there are a number of cocktail venues in Sonoma County, including the Geyserville Gun Club Bar & Lounge. Here, six-guns and Winchester rifles have been traded for frosty Gibson cocktails in this rustic lounge bar just north of Santa Rosa. Enjoying the locally produced wines is the main reason for any visit to Sonoma County, but the area also is known for its world-class cuisine. Pioneering the farm-to-table ethos, a movement that has spread not just through America but worldwide, Sonoma County — in particular the small city of Healdsburg — has a gastronomic scene to rival that of nearby San Francisco and Portland. Embracing Japanese hospitality and cuisine, SingleThread is a boutique property with a pilgrimage-worthy restaurant. Produce from the farm’s own fields is used in three different tasting menus that have been thoughtfully conjured up by the owners who spent years learning their trade on the ground in Japan, only to return to their native California (via the Michelin-starred Fat Duck restaurant in Berkshire, England) to share their creations with Sonoma County. Dry Creek Kitchen at Hotel Healdsburg is another of the town’s restaurants that delivers an exotic menu using locally sourced produce. Chef/Owner Charlie Palmer is well known for his creative cooking spirit and unexpected combinations, accompanied by pairings of Sonoma County’s best wines. If you’re dining here for lunch, then secure a spot outside to watch Healdsburg society drift by. If the farm-to-table ethos has taken your fancy, there are several one-day cookery classes at the Relish Culinary School in downtown Healdsburg. WINE ON BOARD The decks of a superyacht are without doubt one of the best places to open a bottle of fine wine. When it comes to choosing wines to take on board for your charter, you don’t have to travel around the world’s best vineyards. Your Northrop & Johnson charter broker can liaise with expert wine suppliers on the best wines to accompany you on your yacht in your chosen cruising area. Pre-charter, you also will have the opportunity to liaise with the captain and chef on board to discuss how the cuisine and your favorite wines can be partnered. Your wine selection will depend on the specifics of the destination and duration of your charter. Whether you are looking for great Champagne or Burgundy, or a wine specific to the region in which you are cruising, keep in mind that, even with the most sophisticated storage technology, wines that perform on land do not always work well on the ocean. This is particularly the case with red wines, which have a tendency to throw a natural deposit as they age. On dry land there is no vibration and the wine can easily be separated from the deposit by decanting it, but as a yacht is in a perpetual state of motion, if the wine is not stored correctly sediment will be suspended in the wine. Try and opt for lighter, younger wines or more forward vintages. When it comes to the storage of wines on board, there are plenty of options and your charter broker can advise on your chosen yacht’s facilities. Ideally, wine should be kept in a temperature-controlled cellar, free of vibrations in a securely attached wine rack, allowing bottles to lie on their side with no risk of movement. The cellar should be away from the engine room so that it is free of chemical odors, in the dark with no direct sunlight. Northrop & Johnson has a number of yachts in the charter fleet with dedicated wine cellars. Talk to your charter broker for further information.

Do & Discover The entire landscape of Sonoma County just begs to be explored. With 800-plus acres of massive centuries-old trees, the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve at Guerneville has a variety of hikes for all capabilities. Try and go in the morning before the atmospheric Pacific fog burns off. Take a dip in the redwood-lined Russian River or hire a paddleboat or kayak to venture up stream. Those with a head for heights should try zip-lining over the Redwoods. One zip-line is more than 800 feet long and rewards riders with panoramic forest views and flights over deep ravines. A round of golf in the morning is another great way to work up a thirst for an afternoon at the wineries. Though the Californian wine country isn’t the world-class golf it could be, since it is more profitable to use the land for vineyards rather than fairways, there are more than enough courses to satisfy even the most discerning golf enthusiast. From the Jack Nicklaus-designed Mayacama to the Sonoma Golf Club, and many more in between, each and every course has a stunning backdrop with Redwoods framing the course. See & Shop Sonoma County shopping is all about the artisan; from locally produced cheese and olive oil to pottery, the oncesleepy towns have woken up to the demand from visitors for authentic local finds. There also is a movement for antiques as dot-com millionaires from San Francisco source pieces for their grand homes down the coast. The best antiques confluence in Petaluma and Healdsburg. Downtown Sonoma (not to be confused with Sonoma County as a whole) hosts a Friday morning market just off the main square. Local artisan produce (cheese, meat and jam) is all sold here; any would make a lovely accompaniment to the fine wines bought at the various wine tastings as a reminder for the senses of your stay in Sonoma County.

A Vine Voyage Many of the world’s finest wine growing regions are located by some of the best cruising grounds, and for many, touring vineyards during a superyacht charter has great appeal as a way of varying your onboard activity. While chartering along the Côte d’Azur, why not step ashore to the plethora of vineyards along the stunning Provençal coast, or when cruising along the Amalfi Coast head inland and discover indigenous grape varieties and a handful of Italy’s beautiful vineyards spread out over lush hills. Further afield, most people that know their wine know Marlborough, in the north of New Zealand’s South Island, as the sauvignon blanc capital of the world, and the area is like one giant vineyard. Lesser known but even better situated for visitors on superyachts are the vineyards at Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North Island. And finally, the aforementioned Californian wine region is just an hour north of San Francisco and also can be discovered by yacht. The world capital of wine tourism, the vineyards of Napa Valley and Sonoma County have wine tasting down to a fine art, so you can step ashore and select your favorite grape to bring back to your yacht.

A premium-grade bicycle is married to a portable catamaran body to create this innovative superyacht toy that will allow you to bike across the blue planet. The bike has a small footprint for stowage in the tender garage and can be assembled in less than ten minutes. But it’s not merely a yacht toy — this is a high-end bike built out of marine-grade alloys and stainless steel that has proprietary propulsion, a high-gloss carbon fiber outdrive, integrated handle bar steering and rugged high-pressure, drop-stitch pontoons that allow for easy transport, assembly and breakdown. Cruise along at speeds from five to up to ten miles per hour, depending on the rider’s motivation. The whole family can safely go for a spin as Schiller boasts that there is no need for any training. 03 Sleek Scooting The Scrooser is an electric scooter that stands out from the pack with its 500-watt battery able to take you 34 miles on only one charge. The heart of the Scrooser is the zero-emissions electric motor. Push off the ground to activate the impulse drive, then customize your motorization to zip along at 12.5mph or 15.5mph. Four different drives provide a variety of performance options. The electric battery is recharged in about two-and-half hours. The Scrooser’s fat tires are sturdy and solid, and this scooter is street legal, so with the proper certification, driving mirror and LED lights, you can cruise along the coastline feeling safe as can be. Scrooser invites you to put your own stamp on the design with options for custom seat designs, rims and color matching handlebars. 04 Breathe Deep Scuba diving has gone space age. The Poseidon SE7EN Rebreather isn’t your typical diving apparatus, but a piece of innovative tech developed by NASA engineer Dr. Bill Stone. The design takes the same principles of the breathing devices that astronauts use in space and applies them to a device for breathing underwater. The next-generation Poseidon SE7EN Rebreather works by measuring and then controlling the amount of oxygen as the depth changes during the dive, and the exhaled air is purified of CO2 and refreshed with oxygen to be recirculated. The affect is a long-lasting airflow, allowing divers to stay underwater for up to three hours — far outpacing a typical dive outing. It’s designed to be easy to use by divers of all abilities, allowing them to explore the deep blue without making any compromises. In-built tech includes Bluetooth connectivity, so you can easily download your dive logs or manage and configure your dive plans, and it’s Mac compatible. 05 The Submarine Car This is one to add to your toy box wish list! There have been plenty of car and yacht collaborations, but what about an automotive/submarine coalition to create something truly spectacular? Meet Project Neptune, a collab behind famed British car manufacturer Aston Martin and Triton Submarines. The project is based on Triton’s low-profile (LP) three-person sub, which is designed to be carried on smaller superyachts where having a sub wouldn’t be the norm as footprint and low profile takes up much less space in the tender garage. Triton’s submersible know-how is blended with Aston Martin’s acclaimed craftsmanship, design and materials to create what must be one of the prettiest subs on the market. While some have joked that it will be “the slowest Aston Martin ever,” it will be one of the fastest Triton subs to date. For the car connoisseur who likes to go deep, this is the ultimate toy.

AUTO S E N S AT I ONA L SEDANS WORDS SIMON DE BURTON

The “executive sedan” once represented a benchmark of career success and social standing as the type of car that was driven (if not necessarily owned) by company bosses and the well-to-do. But the seemingly unstoppable growth in demand for SUVs has pushed the traditional, wellappointed, four-door sedan way down the sales scale as the category loses out to statement-making four-wheel-drive vehicles that combine the versatility of off-road capability with a high, confidence-inspiring driving position, sports-

car performance, and interior fittings and functionality that would have been difficult to imagine just a few years ago. There’s good news, however, for those who simply don’t need an SUV (and who desire not to go the ostentatious “premium luxury” Bentley/Rolls-Royce route) but do want a cosseting car that’s swift and supremely comfortable, because the major manufacturers have taken the luxury sedan class to a whole new level. Here is a slew of options, three of the very latest cars in detail.

SEDANS

01 Jaguar XJR575 $123,395 When compared with cars such as the Audi A8 and Lexus LS500, this latest iteration of Jaguar’s classic XJ sedan is something of a “cat among the pigeons,” because it’s not brimming with the latest in-car technology like the others, it doesn’t feature any ingenious suspension systems, it’s nowhere near “self-driving” and it certainly doesn’t pretend to be an eco-friendly hybrid. Just the opposite, in fact, because the “575” in the title refers to the output of its highly tuned, five-liter V8 engine. Jaguar Land Rover has developed a habit of spicing-up models such as the F-Type, Range Rover Sport and even, most recently, a “special edition” of the otherwise defunct Defender with this mighty powerhouse — and the somewhat elderly XJ is the latest to get the treatment. What makes the car worthy of inclusion here is that it might well represent the last opportunity to own an “old school” XJ before the arrival of an all-new model for 2019 which, if rumors are to be believed, could feature a class-leading, all-electric powertrain. Available in the U.S. in long wheelbase form only, the XJR575 offers lots of legroom and more than adequate comfort for rear seat passengers while simultaneously providing unparalleled driving fun for the person behind the wheel thanks to that punchy V8 engine and the upgraded suspension and brakes that the car has been fitted with to make the power usable. And, despite the XJ’s limousine status, Jaguar’s interior designers have not held back in highlighting the 575’s sporting nature with racy, diamond-quilted leather seat coverings, carbon fiber veneers, colored stitching and plenty of “575” logos. The exterior, meanwhile, gets twin bonnet louvres, 20-inch split rim alloy wheels in black and a paint job in either “Velocity Blue” or stealthy “Satin Corris Grey.” Performance-wise, this is the swiftest road-going Jaguar XJ ever built — it can sprint from standstill to 60mph in just 4.2 seconds and tops out at 186mph.

02 Audi A8 $82,500 Like some of its rivals, Audi’s range-topping A8 sedan is bristling with future technologies that, while not yet fully integrated, can gradually be introduced through software upgrades when the systems are perfected. Perhaps the most significant of these is the “piloted driving” that makes the A8 the first production car to have been developed especially to be highly automated. When local laws permit, the AI “traffic jam pilot” takes control of driving in slow-moving traffic up to 37mph on highways separated by a physical barrier. It uses images of the car’s surroundings, together with radars, ultrasonic sensors and a laser scanner to monitor the driving area and manage starting, acceleration, steering and braking accordingly — leaving the driver to “focus on a different activity that is supported by the car, such as watching the onboard TV.” Once the system reaches it limits, it is programmed to alert the driver so he or she can take back the controls. There’s a good chance, however, that the occupants might have drifted off into a blissful sleep, such is the car’s level of interior comfort. Smooth and minimalist throughout, the cabin features electrically closing air vents and virtually no traditional switchgear with functions and settings being controlled from a 10.1-inch touchscreen display that, when not in use, becomes virtually invisible in a gloss black surround. There’s also a fully digital “virtual cockpit” with high-definition, head-up display, wireless smartphone charging and the now “de rigueur” Wi-Fi connectivity — while rear-seat passengers each get their own tablets that can be removed from the car and used remotely, a phone operating system that’s independent from the one in the front of the car and a range of lighting options designed to cover everything from reading to relaxing. And relaxing in this car is decidedly easy — not least because of its adaptive air suspension, which also can be had as a “fully active” system that automatically raises or lowers each wheel separately and works in conjunction with the car’s all-wheelsteering to create a true “magic carpet” ride. Engine-wise, the new A8 can be equipped with V6, three-liter turbo diesel or petrol engines, a V8, four-liter diesel, or a range-topping six-liter W12. All four units operate in conjunction with so-called “mild-hybrid” technology that enables the car to coast with the engine switched off and seamlessly restart when required. An A8 L e-tron plug-in hybrid, which can cover up to 31 miles in pure electric mode also is set to join the lineup.

03 Lexus LS500 $130,000 (predicted) Since the launch of the original L400 in 1989, Toyota’s luxury sub-brand Lexus has been a huge seller in the United States thanks to its range of cars that offer a level of performance, comfort, ride and reliability that has traditionally been a cut above the home-grown competition. The fifth-generation of the LS flagship model has now arrived in the form of the LS500, which includes an “h” version with hybrid power. Chief Designer Kouichi Suga has managed to combine a sporty, ground-hugging stance with an elegant, semi-coupe body that is defined from the front by the signature Lexus grille, a large, lattice-work structure that extends from the lip of the hood to the lower edge of the car’s aerodynamic nose. Six windows give a feeling of light and space to the supremely luxurious interior that features a flowing, minimalist fascia centered on an eight-inch screen that displays all of the important driver information in conjunction with a full-color, head-up display. But, with such technology now being regarded as standard in most luxury cars, manufacturers had to find their own ways of standing out. The Lexus approach has been to create a range of special interior finishes using what it calls “Takumi craftsmanship,” a blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern design and technology. All of the work is carried out by just a dozen qualified “Takumi” who, to maintain their status, have to demonstrate their manual dexterity on a daily basis by creating an origami cat in 90 seconds flat…using only their non-dominant hand. After that, they get down to business creating interior finishes for the LS500h that include doors inset with Kiriko glass, panels covered in hand-pleated leather and “art wood” veneers. The interior is further inspired, say Lexus bosses, by the traditional Japanese hospitality principles of “Omotenashi” — meaning occupants of the car are made to feel welcome thanks to features such as automatically lowering suspension to ease ingress, a “climate concierge” system that uses infrared technology to maintain the perfect temperature, bespoke Mark Levinson 3D surround Hi-Fi, and aircraft-style seating with 28-way adjustment as well as a “shiatsu” massage function. The hybrid version of the marque’s new flagship combines a 3.5-liter, V6 engine with two electric motors to provide 354 horsepower — but it is surprisingly unrefined for such a luxurious car. Fortunately for U.S. buyers, there’s the more pleasing option of a twin-turbo, all-petrol engine which feels very much more “Lexus.”

The traditional definition of luxury is somewhat deviating from its meaning of a few decades ago; ultimate luxury today is more about convenience, leaving the idiom “variety is the spice of life” ringing loud and clear in our ears.

WORDS NATALIA LANGSDALE

The growing surge to impress and outdo when it comes to the “Nectar of the Gods” has reached a new dimension where experiential and innovative offerings play a pivotal role. Several renowned spirit companies today understand that there is a growing demand in providing unique ways of indulging in the various tipples that we see available in the upper echelons of the market. Regardless of whether you are on board with such novelties or are enjoying the cruise in the direction of more mainstream brands, measures are trickling in to innovate in various ways. Where we have otherwise seen more traditional production methods left unchanged over the years, new techniques of enjoying them appear.

Bars and mixologists are battling it out to create the ultimate cocktail experience, often using classic spirits as the base with offerings such as color-changing cocktails, frozen “nitro” cocktails, solid cocktails, powdered cocktails, deconstructed cocktails, cocktails with foam, or cocktails infused with otherwise inedible flavors, like leather and campfire smoke. Three award-winning, steeped-with-heritage spirit brands have shaken — not stirred — the market to enhance customers’ experiences. With their exceptionally luxurious products, they open up the drinks cabinet with ways of satisfying the palate of even the most knowledgeable spirits connoisseur. At Hennessy, selecting the finest eaux-de-vie is more than a science, it is an art. A resolutely contemporary Cognac, Hennessy Paradis Impérial represents the craftsmanship passed down through eight generations of Master Blenders.

It is an exquisitely refined and elegant blend of more than 100 eaux-de-vie that are aged anywhere from 30 to 130 years — combining the old to create a modern, unique Cognac for today’s consumer. For Hennessy Paradis Impérial, the innovation lies in the production, the identification of the eaux-de-vie, and understanding how long to age them to result in a rare spirit. Only ten out of 10,000 eaux-devie of any given vintage are determined eligible to qualify. The golden hue is unprecedented for eaux-de-vie of this age.

Yann Fillioux, Hennessy’s former seventh generation Master Blender and creator of Hennessy Paradis Impérial, says, “My predecessors were able to foresee which eaux-de-vie would become remarkable and they understood how to age and protect them for the future. In that sense, Hennessy Paradis Impérial is their creation: it is a resolutely forward-looking blend that embodies the transmission of generations of know-how. The unprecedented alliance of age and finesse makes the Hennessy Paradis Impérial experience unlike any other.” With that, Hennessy X.O has moved away from the traditional by creating exciting new-age cocktail recipes. The original Extra Old Cognac, for example, created in 1870 by fourthgeneration Master Blender Maurice Hennessy, is typically enjoyed neat. Nevertheless, Cognac lovers are encouraged to try it infused with Rooibos tea which brings out the robust notes in the blend.

Akal Chai Rum has in this sense managed to shake up the stigma behind rum in its classic form by creating magical lifestyle events around their tea-infused offering such as “The Mariner’s Flight,” Chai Rum’s smoke service. Served either neat or on the rocks, this 95-point rum is offered over three flavors of cocktail smoker blocks — Maple, Wild Cherry and Spanish Cedar — along with their signature smoking torch. Sophisticated cocktails aside, the trend of gastronomic drinks and “molecular mixology” — a collaborative effort between the kitchen and the bar — has gone some way in tickling the taste buds of a growing following.

Pernod Ricard UK’s gastronomy spirits brand, L’Orbe, is another example where wow-factor is added to menus. This latest innovation in vodka is the first in the world to be naturally flavored with caviar; it was developed using patented micro-encapsulation technology. C U LT U R E S P Y HYPERREALISM WORDS JULIA ZALTZMAN

I’m staring intently at a graphite pencil portrait of an elderly woman by artist Paul Cadden. My eyes trace the curve of her lip, her deep-seated wrinkles and glinting moisture on her teeth. I am keenly aware that it’s not a photo, but my brain is trying to persuade me otherwise. The clarity of detail and tonal contrast is mesmerizing, addictive even. I lean closer, searching for proof of my mistake, and feel as though I’m falling down Lewis Carroll’s rabbit hole.

Paul Cadden is a leading light within the artistic genre of hyperrealism. Born out of photorealism — a U.S. movement, which sought to convey a real life “American dream” with minute finesse — hyperrealism has carved its own individuality in both style and substance. Using photographs primarily as reference — and undeniably mind-blowing in its “photo-like” portrayal — hyperrealism is mainly applied to the independent art style that developed in the early 2000s depicting realistic, contemporary subject matters. “Hyperreal paintings and sculptures are not strict interpretations of photographs, nor are they literal illustrations of a particular scene or subject,” explains Cadden. “Instead, they utilize additional, often subtle, pictorial elements to create the illusion of a reality, which in fact either does not exist or cannot be seen by the human eye.”

Represented by three distinct genres — landscape/urban landscape, portraiture/ human figure, and still life — hyperrealists are appreciated for the narrative elements that they weave into their works, incorporating “emotional, social, cultural and political thematic elements as an extension of the painted visual illusion,” says Cadden. But an additional important differentiating factor is how contemporary the subjects are, explains Maggie Bollaert of London’s Plus One Gallery. “An old-fashioned still life is not what hyperrealism is about, that would be copy-ism; the subject matter and themes need to be modern,” she says.

The colorful, pop art-like work of still life artists Pedro Campos and Javier Banegas beautifully illustrate the contemporary element that Bollaert refers to. Campos’ jars of brightly colored jelly beans have an alluring yet mundane appeal, while his large-scale depictions of Coca Cola and Campbell’s Soup cans bear a likeness to the iconic work of Andy Warhol. Similarly, Banegas’ close-up still life depictions of pencil shavings or paint pots left without lids have an element of inertia about them, and yet give the impression of human interaction; used objects that denote a passing of time.

Championing the movement for the past 18 years, Plus One Gallery represents hyperrealist artists the world over, from still-life experts Pedro Campos and Javier Banegas to urban landscapers Andres Castellanos and Christian Marsh to portraiture artists Paul Cadden and Simon Hennessey. Hennessey takes an almost forensic approach to constructing his paintings. By enlarging photographs to the point where images begin to pixelate, he then begins adding or removing detail, altering depth, adding textures, form and color values and their relationship within the painting. “The notable thing that paintings have over photography is the rich build-up of pigments over a surface and artists should use this to their advantage,” he says. “I want my artwork to show my artistic input and my thought process.” By blurring the boundaries between what is real and what is made up, Hennessey presents the viewer with “a simulation of reality.”

A similar approach is the calling card of urban landscape painter Christian Marsh, best known for his sprawling cityscapes of major destinations around the world. He uses photography to document compositional features, lighting and moving objects at a given time, taking numerous images at the same location so that he can add or remove elements at will. This enables Marsh to create a composite view that reinvents his photographs into a scene that never existed. The evident surge in appeal that hyperrealism is experiencing at present is attributed, in part, to the developments made in camera technology and digital equipment, which offers artists more precision. “I feel the evolvement and accessibility of digital highdefinition photography and editing software is one of the reasons hyperrealism has gained popularity in recent years,” says Hennessey. This high-fidelity realism also is masterfully captured in sculptural work too, such as that of Australian-born, London-based Ron Mueck. Using resin, fiberglass, silicone and many other materials, Mueck constructs hyperrealistic likenesses of human beings, including human hair, while playing with scale.

07

However, it’s also the genre’s ability to represent a relatable zeitgeist that captures our imagination. For Kit King, distorting people’s perception of reality and “undressing the cultural layers that determine worth and shape identity within the social stratum” define her work. Her innovative use of traditional materials pushes boundaries, often with a destructive nature that emulates the destructive nature of man. The need to create beckons the need to destroy, as is visible in King’s most recent works of fully rendered paintings that have been cut up into pieces, deconstructed and reassembled. “When I examine the cultural layers and pick apart what determines position and worth within society, I am always left with an overwhelming sense of unreality; this sense of living in ‘Backwardslandia’ where we have it all twisted,” King explains. “I look at the way things are, and it feels unreal to me, like a bad dream.”

Unlike most hyperrealists who work in small squares, section-by-section, King works in layers, covering the entirety of her large-scale surface. “Working large allows me to dance with the paint,” she says. “The larger the surface, the freer my movements can be, and the more I can feel each brush stroke as I push the paint across the surface; free to feel the piece come to life.” Paul Cadden, Pedro Campos, Christian Marsh, Andres Castellanos, Javier Banegas and Simon Hennessey are represented by Plus One Gallery and their work can be viewed at www. plusonegallery.com; Kit King’s pieces are available at www.kitkingart.com.

03 Happy hour is well spent by the sundeck bar 04 VERTIGE Captain Filippo Belli 05 The onboard toy chest ensures constant onwater fun

Italian yacht builder Tankoa made waves in the yachting industry when it launched the stunning 227-foot-seven-inch (69.4m) motor yacht SUERTE in 2015. She went on the charter market with Northrop & Johnson, was chartered and then sold to a charter guest who simply fell in love with the yacht. This, of course, created some buzz within the industry. What was so special about this yacht that one of her first charter guests simply had to purchase her straight away? Tankoa soon provided the answer when it launched (in February 2017) the magnificent 164-foot (50m) motor yacht VERTIGE. The yacht was officially delivered in May 2017 when Captain Filippo Belli took the helm. Filippo, who boasts a 21-year yachting career, joined the yacht six months before delivery, “I was able to work on all of the detailing and finishing of the yacht in order to deliver her in practically perfect condition,” he says. Filippo began working on the water in 1992 as an OOW in the Italian Navy. In 1997, he transitioned to a career in yachting and joined his first yacht as a bosun. He worked on many yachts throughout his career, from motor to sailing, private to charter. He is an extremely knowledgeable and professional captain with ample industry experience and also brings a lively, fun attitude to any yacht on which he works. After VERTIGE splashed, she went straight to work. “We did 13 weeks of charter during the 2017 summer season,” Filippo explains. “Two weeks of charter were repeat clients, which have chartered with me before and the rest were new clients.” The yacht put 6,400 miles under her keel in two months; she cruised everywhere from Turkey to Greece, Croatia to South Italy, Sicily to Palermo, Sardinia, Corsica, Portofino, San Remo, Monaco, Saint-Tropez and beyond.

No matter who stepped aboard, the impression they left with was the same — awestruck. “I’m very proud to be captain of this boat,” Filippo says. “She is extremely comfortable and has incredible Italian design.” Filippo explains that guests love the yacht’s layout. “The smart concept allows guests to utilize different spaces.” Filippo explains that VERTIGE is well suited for groups of couples and families because she has a variety of areas ideal for entertaining, but she also allows for privacy; he maintains that guests can enjoy the yacht separately or together — “there are so many options for guests aboard,” he says. In addition to an exceptional interior layout, the yacht’s ten-meter beam ensures that she feels much large than a 50-meter yacht; “It’s like being on a 60- to 65-meter yacht because of how wide she is,” says Filippo. “The volume is immense.” VERTIGE allows for up to 12 guests in six staterooms; nine crewmembers are aboard, all of whom are extremely qualified professionals, able to create incredible holidays for guests. VERTIGE made her yachting industry debut at the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show, where she was — some (including Captain Filippo) might say — the talk of the show. “She definitely is one of the most visited yachts here,” he says while beaming. The word on the street about VERTIGE is, in Captain Filippo’s words, “stunning.” “Everyone is talking about the impressive season we had,” Filippo proclaims. And when you consider that summer 2017 was the yacht’s first season in the water, it’s evident that there’s plenty of proof to back up the chatter.

09

After VERTIGE wrapped up the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show, she headed Stateside on Dockwise Yacht Transport and into port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for her American unveiling at the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. She then made her way down island for the 2017 Antigua Charter Show, where VERTIGE again was a hot ticket. She was extremely well received by brokers from around the world and began her first winter Caribbean charter season in December 2017 with a few charters already lined up on the books. Despite the Caribbean season’s slower start up, due to the Atlantic hurricanes of 2017, VERTIGE’s first winter season was a success. She will soon once again make her way to the Mediterranean Sea where she is gearing up for what is anticipated to be an even busier 2018 summer season.

1 1 3

Charter VERTIGE will be available in the Mediterranean in summer 2018. For more information on chartering luxury yacht VERTIGE, please contact your preferred Northrop & Johnson charter broker

VERTIGE is a one-of-a-kind luxury yacht. “She is a fashion boat; she looks amazing in the water,” says Captain Filippo. “But she’s more than that. As good as she looks, she sails even better. She is very, very stable and extremely well built.” Filippo adds that this is due to the impressive craftsmanship of Tankoa. “The quality of the materials, the skill level of the people who worked on her and the attention to detail are what make the yacht so special,” he concludes. Since her launch, VERTIGE hasn’t endured even one little hiccup. She boasts an impressive prowess, outstanding build quality, exquisite design, next-level technology and a level of comfort that most find only in their land-based homes. VERTIGE is more than a yacht, she is a floating masterpiece from her pedigree to the linen sheets; she is top class all the way.

The fjords of southwest Norway are what draw most charterers to explore these majestic cruising grounds. The narrow inlets of sea, bounded by craggy walls of rock are nature at its best. Springtime sees the snow retreat to the mountaintops, leaving a landscape scattered with waterfalls and streams that flow to reach the magnificent fjords. It may not be the place to head to spend your days sunbathing on deck, but really the only place to be is on deck as nothing can prepare you for the beauty of the passing scenery. The scale and the glittering fjords, with their subtle shifts in rock color, and the staggering white distances of mountain heights will make you and your guests stand on impulse as though giving an involuntary ovation.

From the Lofoten Islands in the north to the southern fjords, the land of the midnight sun makes for a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop for any yacht charter. The most popular itinerary for any cruise in Norway begins in Bergen. Spend a day ashore exploring the city before a cruise around the fjords, including the famed Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. From the fjords, cruise south to Stavanger, or north to the Lofoten Islands. Part of the Arctic Circle, the approach to the islands offers views over the towering peaks of the Lofoten Wall – a 200-mile range of mountains.

STAVANGER A former European capital of culture, Norway’s oil capital Stavanger is at its best in the summer when the near continuous daylight illuminates the stunning twin-harbor city. Colorful wooden buildings cradle the hills and line the quaysides amid modern interpretations of a seafaring past. Stavanger is the perfect place to spend a day exploring ashore before you begin or end a charter along the southwest coastline of Norway. Culture @ Serious about its heritage, Stavanger has several museums. A visit to the Norwegian Petroleum Museum may not sound exciting, but almost half a century ago Norway’s first oil field opened and subsequently the nation has become one of the richest in Europe. Walk around the magnificent Vagan Harbor (to the west of the city) and discover bronze sculptures by Antony Gormley. Norway’s oldest church, Stavanger Cathedral dominates the city center with its pair of grand towers. Following a tour of the cathedral (don’t miss the baroque pulpit), take a hike around the lake to Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger). The quaint cobblestone streets of the old town are lined with more than 170 white clapboard houses from the late 18th century. Built in 1850 as a watchtower to guard against fires in the city and aboard the ships in the harbor, the historical Valberg tower provides panoramic views over the city and waterfront. For those with a penchant for music, Stavanger Concert Hall is a modern venue where highly celebrated classical concerts are performed throughout the year in a stunning setting by the waters’ edge.

Explore @ Lysefjord From Stavanger head to Lysefjord, passing beneath one of the spectacular bridges created as a result of oil wealth. Cruise alongside Pulpit Rock, a wedge of rock nearly 2,000 feet above the water. A climb to the top rewards with the most breathtaking viewing platform in the world. Shop @ Øvre Holmegate The winding streets beneath Valberg tower have a concentration of national and international boutiques, especially along Øvre Holmegate. Locally made arts and crafts can be found throughout the cobblestone streets of Old Stavanger. Dine @ With the freshest fish on offer, sushi is a must. Omakase is billed as one of the finest sushi restaurants in Norway and serves traditionally prepared Japanese dishes. Timbuktu Sushi, by the waterside at Nedre Strandgate, offers sharing menus of butterfish, halibut and, for the meat eaters, duck and sirloin. For a special occasion, Re-naa was awarded a Michelin Star in 2016, (reputedly Norway’s first outside the capital). Chef Sven Erik Renaa creates dishes using the best of the region’s produce in one fixed-price menu. Drink @ For a relatively small city, Stavanger punches above its weight with a wide range of bars and a vibrant nightlife. For an encyclopedic menu of beers, head to Cardinal in the old town; whisky lovers will find a varied menu at the Holmen Bar in the Victoria Hotel.

BERGEN Lush mountains flank the small seaside city of Bergen, which woos superyachts with its natural beauty, history, culture and Scandi gastronomic scene. Best known as the gateway to the fjords, Bergen remains under the radar of the tourist trail and has the atmosphere and charm of a small town. It is best to avoid July when the cruise ships pass through; August and September are the ideal months to step ashore. Sunny for about 20 hours a day throughout the summer, there is plenty to keep you occupied and most attractions are walking distance from the famously colorful port.

Explore @ Mount Fløyen For panoramic views over Bergen and the surrounding fjords, take the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen, 1,050 feet above sea level. The more adventurous in the party can hike to the top or mountain bike along the trekking trails.

Dine @ Bare Vestland is great for fresh takes on traditional dishes, and Lysverket is inventive and cool with things like oyster emulsion and sorrel sorbet on the menu. For extensive seafood dishes, Boha uses locally caught produce served with Mediterranean influences. Alternatively, prizewinning chef Hanne På Høyden’s menu includes cured reindeer, amongst other locally sourced ingredients, all served in an elegantly rustic room at the restaurant of the same name. Drink @ Lysverket is the place to head for cocktails with a Norwegian twist, while Henrik Øl & Vinstove serves more than 50 different types of Scandinavian beers on tap. The Whisky Bar at the Hotel Terminus is where you will find the well-heeled Bergen locals, while the younger crowd hang out at Muskedunder. Go dancing at Landmark, which also has art shows, or Apollon’s, where local bands play. Spa @ Solstrand Hotel Even the most seasoned explorers appreciate a little pampering; Scandinavia is, after all, home to the ubiquitous sauna. Just south of Bergen lies the Solstrand Hotel, right in the heart of Norway’s fjords. Be sure to relax in the Jacuzzi and take in the views of the fjord before experiencing a Swedish massage, body wrap, steam bath or traditional sauna.

LOFOTEN ISLANDS Lying 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Norway’s Lofoten archipelago is made up of six principal islands that are populated, and hundreds of smaller islands, most of which are uninhabited. This is an enchanting area of picturesque villages, majestic mountains, deep fjords and a diverse landscape that offers hiking, skiing, fishing, ocean rafting, surfing, or scuba diving. The untrammeled landscape forms a dramatic backdrop to an adventurous charter through the summer months.

13 Reine Village, Lofoten Islands, Norway

Lying between 67° and 68° North latitude, the Lofoten archipelago is an ideal place from which to see the Northern Lights, which are best viewed from anything in between 65° and 75° North latitude. However, displays of the Aurora Borealis tend to intensify around the equinox months of September and March, and can be viewed from September through to mid-April. While the Northern Lights are always happening, the Arctic Circle’s midnight sun makes it impossible to see them during the 24-hour summer light but, due to the warm Gulf Stream, the Lofoten Islands have a much milder climate than other parts of the world on the same latitude and are a stunning alternative cruising ground.

WORDS JANINE ST.DENIS

Beautifully situated on Horsemill Lane in Water Mill on Mecox Bay is a striking 12,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home, known as Listowel, nestled on 6.9 acres of land. With not a neighbor in sight, this home on Horsemill Lane is a veritable sanctuary. Designed by architect Katherine McCoy in 2008, this considerable shingle-style home has it all. From the gardens, designed by landscape architect Quincy Hammond, to a pool and a dock, the estate is as enchanting as the home itself.

01

The property is surrounded on three sides by 125 acres of rambling countryside and farmland. To the west, a small freshwater pond is settled before the bay. Views of greenery and glistening blue waters abound. When you arrive at Listowel, you are greeted by a gated entrance and remarkable scenery. The sprawling lawns are dotted with elegant trees and geometric gardens with thoughtprovoking patterns and an array of white roses. In the center of it all, the home stands proud with its cedar façade and stone chimneys.

The home itself is incredible. With 12,000 square feet of entertaining and living space, it is both a designer’s dream and a comfortable place for daily life. This two-story estate offers five bedrooms. The master suite comprises the southeast wing of the home. It has vaulted ceilings, a sitting area, fireplace and glasspaneled doors to the southwest terrace, which offers views of Mecox Bay. The master bath, ensuite, is wall-to-wall marble with heated floors and incredible views of the emerald farmlands that abound outside the residence.

N A V I G A T O R R E A L E S T A T E

The second floor is home to three additional en-suite bedrooms. They, too, boast vaulted ceilings, as well as marble baths and bespoke closets. The Tower Study is also found on this floor. It is a romantic space with a wood-burning fireplace. Not to be outdone, the home’s two-story first-floor entry features a grand staircase and a fireplace. On this floor, guests will find a 3,000-volume library, where “proper English” style beautifully melds with contemporary aesthetics. The adjoining family room offers beauty in its details.

Various cozy “conversation” areas are found within this room, which has a fireplace and three sets of French doors that open to a covered porch, ideal for bringing the outside in. Also on the first floor are the smoking room with a stunning bay window, formal dining room with hand-painted chinois wallpaper, French doors to the alfresco living areas, and fireplace; butler’s pantry and chef’s kitchen. Entertaining is a dream at Listowel. The kitchen is sophisticated, encased in marble. Stainless steel islands with seating welcome guests to watch the magic without compromising the chef’s space. Neighboring the kitchen, out four sets of French doors is a trellis-covered alfresco living room with a stone fireplace, enabling use even in chillier months.

In addition to the estate’s main home, a guest cottage is equally impressive. It is attached to the main house yet remains exceptionally private. Accessed through a hallway off the kitchen, it features a chic living area with a fireplace, a painting studio, a second-floor en-suite bedroom and access to the outdoor areas. The home’s custom 20 x 70 pool offers the best in minimalist chic. Secluded and private, this outdoor oasis is well executed. The impeccably manicured gardens and accents of Listowel’s estate convey the ideal balance of function and form, contemporary and classic, ensuring this property will never go out of style.
