HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME

Summer is a really special time of the year in yachting. Along the coast of New England, charming historic villages enjoy cool coastal breezes across their warm sandy beaches. In the Mediterranean, cobblestone streets along the azure water lead to quaint cafes serving chilled rosé to sun-bronzed vacationers. Humpback whales and sea lions surface among surreal blue glaciers in Alaska’s Inside Passage. And secluded coves in the South Pacific showcase their exotic beauty to adventure-seekers. In the summertime, there is no shortage of fun to be had, and I am reminded that this is exactly why we do what we do at the many Northrop & Johnson offices around the world. We make these magical memories possible for our clients.

Our U.S. offices in Florida, Rhode Island, New York and California and international offices in Monaco, France, Spain, Holland, Australia and Asia are all staffed by the very best people in the business who are constantly hard at work to help make each client’s dreams a reality. I thank my lucky stars to be surrounded by the finest team in the industry, a team passionate about its work and customer satisfaction; a team of more than 115 souls around the world; a team in the business of fun! As we enjoy hearing from our clients who are off enjoying their yachts from every corner of the globe, our offices are diligently preparing for the fall boat show season. Bruce Leffers is the grand master of our boat show presence in the U.S., serving as Northrop & Johnson’s boat show liaison for the last 20 years. His finesse for logistics is nothing short of amazing. Over the course of the season, he will orchestrate the placement of more than 70 boats moving in and out of shows; he’ll coordinate the required power, water, staffing and crew. Bruce’s work is integral to our success, and I am so grateful to have him as an indispensable part of the team.

I am sitting at my desk in our new Fort Lauderdale office at the Lauderdale Marine Center as I write this. LMC currently is undergoing massive renovations, which include dredges, barges, cranes and docks, all busily underway even as the dog days of summer settle in. Once renovations are complete, we will have a front-row position at the premier, state-of-the-art facility in South Florida. So as much as I have enjoyed reminiscing about summer fun, all the activity outside reminds me that its time to get back to work myself. After all, the fun isn’t going to make itself…that’s my job. All the best,

Kevin

04 Marcus Overman From a very young age, Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Marcus Overman spent his time around the water. Born in Brighton in the U.K. but raised in Sydney, Australia, Marcus spent his days surfing, sailing and enjoying life by the sea. When Marcus was 20 years old, he started his career in the marine industry as a watersports instructor on Hayman Island in the Whitsundays near the Great Barrier Reef. From there, he expanded his repertoire, from teaching sailing on Sydney Harbour to delivering yachts up and down the east coast of Australia. Marcus then started working for a global sailing charter company that took him around world. In 2002, he landed in Phuket, Thailand, where he stayed with his wife Linda and two children. Having worked in Asia in the dealership and brokerage sector of the industry since 2005, Marcus has a wealth of experience to locate ideal boats best suited to clients’ needs. He thrives on the personal connections with others and the satisfactory feeling of handing over a yacht to a new owner, then hearing the stories and memories they make as they explore the stunning Asian region. 05 Sébastien Clavé Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Sébastien Clavé was born and raised in Normandy, France. After his A-levels, Sébastien graduated from university with a mechanical engineering degree and then went on to receive a master’s degree from the International Business School of Le Havre. In 2005, after two years in the motor trade business, Sébastien decided it was time for a career change. He found yachting and immediately felt comfortable and passionate, joining ABYS Yachting (an exclusive Pershing, Ferretti and Custom Line dealer) as a sales broker. After only one year with the company in the head office in Antibes, he was tasked with opening the Monaco branch, where he worked as the manager and a sales broker. In July 2018, Sébastien joined the Northrop & Johnson Monaco team. With more than 10 years in the yachting industry as a Sales Broker, Sébastien has worked with a multitude of clients throughout his career, brokering deals, working on new construction yachts, handling flag-state regulations and much more. His strong expertise in all aspects of the yachting business, with multiple deals to his credit, make him an excellent addition to the N&J team. 06 Hans Doodkorte Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Hans Doodkorte grew up on the water in Perth, Australia. A keen diver, he moved to the Whitsundays in 1987. While there, Hans got a job on the exclusive Hayman Island working on two Bannenberg-designed Oceanfast yachts as a deckhand; this gave him a taste for yachting and travel. Eventually, Hans’s newfound yachting career took him to Asia and later the Mediterranean. After a season in the “Med,” having worked his way up through the ranks to engineer, Hans found himself at Royal Huisman Shipyard working on a major two-year refit of a large sailing yacht. This yacht later became his first command as captain after receiving his 3000-ton Masters’ License in 1999. Following a circumnavigation, the yacht returned to the Mediterranean in 2007. Looking for a new challenge, Hans decided to apply his extensive engineering experience and captains’ expertise to managing new build projects; to date this includes five successful projects of 50 to 70 meters at some of the finest shipyards in the world, including Feadship and Heesen in Holland. Having spent many years visiting Asia and seeing the new infrastructure and growth in the local industry, Hans decided to make Phuket his second home. He is now part of the Northrop & Johnson Thailand office where his yachting industry experience and know-how will greatly aid him in his role as a sales broker.

01 Palm Beach Boat Show wrap-up The 2018 edition of the iconic Palm Beach International Boat Show welcomed visitors to downtown West Palm Beach, March 22 to 25. With beautiful weather throughout the show, guests and clients mixed and mingled at the chic N&J stand. As one of the largest in-water superyacht exhibitors, N&J showcased 13 luxury yachts for sale and charter, including PRAXIS, LADY LEILA, BRIO, KAOS, CLORINDA, VAIVEN, STERLING V, CARMELLA, ENDLESS SUMMER, Z, HEARTBEAT, DELTA CARBON 54, and LANGARA. Sales and charter brokers from Antibes, Fort Lauderdale, Monaco, Newport, Newport Beach and New York offices all were in attendance at the show for private showings and meetings. In addition, Northrop & Johnson’s Strategic Global Partners, Chai Rum, Lufthansa First Class, Lauderdale Marine Center, Marsh Insurance and Tim Davis of Corcoran Real Estate were on hand during the show. N&J sponsor Scrooser provided easy show maneuverability with three Scroosers at the disposal of brokers and clients. Friday evening, N&J hosted clients, guests and friends for its annual ‘49 Elite event. Guests enjoyed viewing the numerous yachts on display, the delicious Chai Rum cocktails, tasty hors-d’oeuvres and music by local band Roots Shakedown. On Sunday after a successful four days in the sunshine, the yacht horns sounded to signal the end of the show. 02 2018 Palma Superyacht Show wrap-up From April 27 to May 1, the island of Palma de Mallorca was bustling for its annual Palma Superyacht Show. With more than 80 luxury yachts larger than 80 feet on display, this event certainly draws a crowd. Set in the backyard of N&J’s Palma office, N&J boasted quite the offering at this year’s show. Ten Northrop & Johnson luxury yachts, including the 128-foot (39m) sailing yacht CYRANO DE BERGERAC, the 121-foot (37m) motor yacht CRYSTAL, the 113-foot (34m) sailing yacht BAIURDO V, the 113-foot (34m) sailing yacht FRUITION II, 100-foot (30m) sailing yacht DARK SHADOW, the 97-foot (29m) sailing yacht ALTA MAREA, the 95-foot (29m) sailing yacht MAYA RAY, the 89-foot (27m) motor yacht ELLISIUM, 02 the 77-foot (23m) sailing yacht AGLAIA, and the 72-foot (22m) motor yacht MYTHOS, were on display. Once again, the show was well received by attendees and the yachts were well trafficked, garnering much interest, especially by the sailing set. 03 The Superyacht Show Barcelona 2018 LYBRA (the Large Yacht Brokers Association – which comprises the industry’s biggest brokerage houses, including Northrop & Johnson) cut its boat-show teeth in 2018 with The Superyacht Show Barcelona. The inaugural event was held in the Spanish city May 2 to 5. OneOcean Port Vell marina played host to the Association’s first show. Offering prime position for yachts starting their summer Mediterranean seasons, the show hit all the right notes. LYBRA set out to create a client-centric event that showcased sales and charter yachts for clients without all of the hubbub of a typical yacht show. There were no vendors or hotdog carts, just luxury yachts from 40 to 75-plus meters on display. N&J was on hand with brokers from its European and U.S. offices. Additionally, N&J had two luxury yachts, the 214-foot (65m) superyacht DOUBLE DOWN and the 140-foot (43m) sailing superyacht APHRODITE A, on display for guests. Overall the entire show was deemed a great success by attendees who vowed to make the trip next year; there are whisperings of a U.S.-based version of the show in 2019. Stay tuned.

NORTHROP & JOHNSON’S EXPERT RETAIL CHARTER BROKERS HAVE THEIR FINGERS ON THE PULSE OF THE INDUSTRY. THEY WEIGH IN TO SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE MUST-HAVE AMENITIES ON CHARTER YACHTS

Beach Club

Ocean Pool

Masseuse

“One amenity that more and more clients are asking for is a beach club on board; this allows guests to be closer to the water level, allowing them to easily access or watch others playing with the water toys. It provides a great socializing platform and offers guests the ability to interact with each other regardless of their age and fitness level, which likely is one of the big reasons beach clubs are becoming more popular. In some cases, the yacht’s crew also can set up a small table on the beach club for a romantic dinner for two by the water’s edge. For those yachts that do not have built-in beach clubs, inflatable versions are available; I greatly enjoyed my time on one on board TRENDING in Antigua last year.”

“Beside the ‘standard’ inflatable towables, snorkeling gear, etc., I personally think all yachts should offer an ocean pool, which is a portable floating pool that comes in a variety of sizes and depths. These can be attached to the yacht’s bathing platform and basically consist of a deep mesh enclosure designed to keep out even the smallest jellyfish and unwanted sea life. Along with protecting guests from flotsam and jetsam, these pools serve as an ideal means of keeping younger children “at bay” while they swim. They also provide a lot of security for elderly people. Depending on the model of the pool, often one can lay on top of the inflatable sides and sunbathe. One client of mine will not book a yacht unless it includes an ocean pool in its inventory of amenities.”

“I think a masseuse on board is definitely becoming a must-have amenity. Some yachts may have massage tables already on board, but a masseuse must then be brought on when the guests want to enjoy a relaxing massage. Having a masseuse as part of the crew, most often this is a double role as a stewardess/masseuse, is definitely a selling point that some clients consider a must when booking their charter yacht.”

SPOTLIGHT

JOSH LEE WORDS JANINE ST.DENIS

Q: What is your background within the yachting industry and how did you come to be a yacht broker? A: After graduating from school, I dreaded the thought of more study, so university was out of the question for me. I decided to write down a few things that I wanted to do. The list comprised traveling, exploring and relaxing on the beach. After reviewing the list, my parents advised me to consider the maritime profession.

I then enrolled in a college course call “Elementary Sea Going Skills,” which was an eye opener. Part of the curriculum was to apply for a job at the end of the course. I was fortunate enough to get a position as a deckhand on a fast ferry in the Whitsundays. After a few years with the company, I was able to achieve my master’s ticket. At age 19, I was the captain of a 78foot (24m) fast ferry with seven crew and 120 guests.

Eventually, I purchased my own 35-foot (10m) sailing yacht and lived aboard it for a year or so before setting sail for Asia. Four months after arriving in Phuket, Thailand, I decided to sell my yacht and rejoin landbased life. I realized, however, that there were no yacht brokers in Thailand. With so many beautiful islands and so many yachts and boats, there was definitely a market for brokers, so in October 1997, Lee Marine was born.

What is your best advice to a first-time yacht buyer? First, choose a reputable yacht brokerage and find a broker that you like and trust. Don’t settle; keep looking until you do. It all starts from there. Your broker should help you by understanding your real requirements. If you haven’t yet established your requirements, your broker will help create them step by step. You’ll then move onto yacht selection, survey, after-sales advice and re-sale. Hopefully, you will have a long and enjoyable relationship with your broker; good brokers care about their clients. What is the most important facet to a successful yacht sale? That’s a difficult question. I would say balancing everyone’s requirements in the correct way by being personal, patient and understanding. Relationships are the key to a successful sale.

What, in your opinion, are the biggest trends happening in yacht design? For our region, one of the biggest trends is definitely full displacement, which allows yacht owners to slow down and go further with more stability and lower costs. What is the current state of yachting in Asia? The current state of yachting is Asia is most definitely an upward trend. Asians are entering the market in record numbers and service centers and marinas continue to grow. Like most places, the government seems be the slowest to get on board and support the industry; however, it’s the next big cruising area of the world and it’s slowly opening up for everyone to enjoy; we are sitting right in the middle of it!

What makes N&J stand out among other brokerage companies? I think Northrop & Johnson in the Asia Pacific region enjoys a reputation of old-school values and a high success rate in sales and charter. People recognize the classic brand and tend to trust it as opposed to the new wave of companies with fast names and logos now appearing in the area. Asians don’t like risk when it comes to new things like yachts, so we enjoy the edge over competitors thanks to a solid, established heritage. What are your five must-have features on a yacht? For me, a fun crew, excellent chef, and adequate entertainment, like music and Wi-Fi; a view of the sea from below and, of course, a well-stocked bar.

IF YOU HAVEN’T YET ESTABLISHED YOUR REQUIREMENTS, YOUR BROKER WILL HELP CREATE THEM STEP BY STEP

THE LOWDOWN ON THE HIGHLIFE Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands is one of the most sought-after winter destinations in the Caribbean. From beautiful beaches to stunning crystalline waters, the British Virgin Islands are a top yachting hot spot for the jet set. While cruising in the area, Oil Nut Bay resort is a must visit. Perched at the eastern tip of the island, the resort’s 300 acres are enveloped by natural splendor. Home to a marina, villas, suites and properties, the resort offers an array of incredible amenities, including a seriously stellar dining experience provided by resident Chef Jermain Abrams. The Oil Nut Bay Restaurant is available to outside guests by reservation. The open-air palapa-style restaurant (01) is situated between three of the resort’s swimming pools. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Guests not staying at the resort can tender over to enjoy lunch or can be picked up by a water taxi from Gun Creek. With the beautiful azure ocean as the backdrop, dine alfresco and enjoy the sights and delightful Caribbean breezes as you sample delicious island-style and internationally inspired fare. The menu changes seasonally based on the freshest ingredients available. Begin your lunch with a refreshing starter; perhaps a chilled smoked tomato gazpacho or the signature “skinny fries.” For those keeping on the healthy side, the Life Salad Bowl comprises quinoa, chickpeas, kale, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, oranges, cucumber and a citrus vinaigrette. The lobster salad also is a lighter option featuring chilled lobster, arugula, avocado, grapefruit and a citrus yogurt vinaigrette. Entrees include items like the lobster burger, off-the-cliff wagyu burger, fish and chips and garganelli pasta. The restaurant’s al forno (oven-baked) pizza is sure to tickle the taste buds (03). The island-style jerk chicken pizza adds a kick of Caribbean flair to a traditional Italian dish. After lunch, perhaps grab a cocktail at the swim-up bar. Some of the signature drinks on the menu include the Dark & Stormy – the classic Caribbean cocktail of Gosling’s dark rum and ginger beer – a Mango Maniac, a delightful concoction of mangoes, oranges, white rum, crème de coco and grenadine, or an ONB Fantasy — a magical, tropical mix of Malibu, Cointreau, grenadine, amaretto and orange. Dinner is available at Oil Nut Bay by reservation. You can enjoy evening meals in the open-air palapa or, should the occasion call for it, a candle-lit dinner beachside is available (02). The dinner menu offers a myriad of items for sophisticated palates. Perhaps tease the taste buds with a starter such as the Beach Club Salmon Tataki — Chilean salmon marinated in ponzu with caramelized sweet plantains, avocado, leeks and a honey-soy reduction. Two of the most celebrated mains on the menu include the herb-wrapped beef tenderloin with vegetable herb quinoa and truffle butter and the steam-jerk wahoo with grilled eggplant, vegetable ratatouille and herb oil. Oil Nut Bay has a comprehensive wine list to accompany your meal and offers a delightful variety of cocktails and desserts to add that extra something special when you dine. Another unique option for dining at Oil Nut Bay is the exquisite picnic baskets prepared by the chef. If you’ve found the perfect dining spot that just happens to be located outside of the restaurant, Oil Nut Bay can create a tailored picnic lunch for you and your guests. Regardless of where you choose to dine or what marvelous meal you choose to eat, impeccable service and exceptional cuisine are what make the Oil Nut Bay Restaurant world class. 03

01 The stunning 203-foot (62m) Benetti MINE GAMES 02 The five-star crew of MINE GAMES create unforgettable holidays 03 The large beach club aboard MINE GAMES

In 2010, Italian shipbuilder Benetti launched a 203-foot (62m) luxury superyacht to rival even the most stylish yachts on the water. From her keel to her sundeck, MINE GAMES drips with Italian refinement and design. Premier naval architect Stefano Natucci lent his expertise when styling the yacht’s exterior while Italian design house Studio Massari crafted an interior that glimmers with gold and exudes elegance. Originally launched as BISTANGO, MINE GAMES is as sumptuous as they come. Following a 2015 refit, this yacht is exactly where you want to be during a charter season. She welcomes up to 12 guests in six staterooms, which include a master suite, a VIP and four guestrooms all outfitted to the highest possible specifications. Boarding MINE GAMES from the beach club, you will be greeted by the smiling stewardesses with a glass of Champagne. You then can make your way to the main deck aft where you will pass a large dining table for up to 12 guests and two lounge areas. This is the perfect spot for morning coffee and breakfast. Walking further, you will enter the yacht’s opulent main salon. A color palate of black, cream and gold can be found throughout the yacht. Lavish fabrics drape the furnishings to create a space that is as beautiful to look at as it is comfortable to enjoy. The main salon features two mirrored sitting areas where guests can sit back with a good book or socialize. Formal dining is found further forward. Below a stunning crystalline lighting fixture, a black lacquer table is surrounded by ivory-and-black chairs. Here, guests will enjoy a five-star meal prepared by the yacht’s exemplary chef. The main deck also is home to a marble-soled foyer where guests will find a glass elevator that accesses all decks of the yacht.

The first of the staterooms, a split-level master, is located forward on the main deck. Featuring large, mirrored dressing rooms with a sofa, a full-beam master lounge with an oversized couch and ottomans and a large flat screen TV, and an office area with bookshelves, a desk and desktop computer, the master suite is perfectly suited for extra privacy, if requested or required. The yacht’s striking gold, black and crème color palate is continued into the master suite for a cohesive aesthetic throughout. Moving further forward into the master suite through the lounge is the bedroom featuring en-suite his-and-hers bathrooms — his is located to starboard; hers to port. While both bathrooms feature single sinks, bidets and showers, hers features a large Jacuzzi tub with a rain shower. The space is outfitted with a full walk-around king-size bed, sitting chairs, a retractable TV and an overhead skylight with a retractable shade.

04

05

The lower deck of the yacht is home to four staterooms; all are accessed via the beautiful staircase or the elevator. These staterooms comprise one king, two queens and one twin, ensuring the layout works for a variety of charter clients, including families. All four of these staterooms feature 42-inch flat screen TVs with movie systems, ensuite baths — the king and two queens feature large Jacuzzi tubs with rain showers. Two of the staterooms also feature Pullman berths. The bridge deck aft features a large alfresco dining table for up to 12 guests and lounge seating. Further forward, the skylounge is the ideal place for entertaining and socializing. This large space is surrounded by windows, flooding the space with natural light and providing a wonderful vantage point for viewing the cruising destination. A full bar with bar stools ensures this place is perfect for evening cocktails. A large L-shaped sofa, chairs and ottomans provide ample seating. A large flat screen TV makes this spot ideal for watching movies in the evening. A baby grand piano further sets the stage for elegance and grandeur. 06

Q How did you get into the world of aviation and what led you to found Nicholas Air? A I started my aviation career with my first flying lesson at the age of 12. By age 16, I had accumulated more than 1,000 hours and soloed four aircraft on my 16th birthday –

a twin Cessna 340, Cessna 177RG, 172 and 150 – breaking the world record for most complex aircraft soloed on a 16th birthday. In the summer of 1997, I convinced my parents to help me purchase a twin Cessna 340 and started Nicholas Air. I’ve always taken a hands-on approach; in the beginning, I was the

pilot, customer service agent, accountant and everything in between – this included washing and servicing the aircraft. My father, John Correnti, was an executive in the steel industry and frequently flew by private jet, so many of the times I was able to go with him. This introduced me to the world of private air travel.

With more than the two decades under its belt, how has what Nicholas Air does changed and where do you see it going in the future? Nicholas Air started as an aircraft management company. We have evolved into one of the largest full-service providers of jet cards, lease shares, and fractional ownership programs in North America and service the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. The number one priority in our business is customer safety. Number two is providing a consistently superior travel experience. One thing that remains steadfast is that we are continuously improving upon our services and ensuring our members are always happy. Geographically, where do your customers come from and where are they typically flying? How does their flying trend between business, personal or a mix? Sixty percent are leisure travelers; 30 percent are business travelers and companies, including large corporations that need to supplement their corporate lift; and the remainder are individuals and retired couples who sold their business or aircraft and still want to continue utilizing private air travel. As much as 80 percent of all new business comes from referrals. Our membership extends throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

With many other aviation companies, people may not realize they’re dealing with a service provider that claims it owns 1,000 airplanes, but, in reality, doesn’t.

Tell us about your current fleet? We own and operate a fleet of Pilatus PC-12s, Phenom 100, Citation CJ3, Phenom 300 and Citation Latitude jets, which enable our members to fly coast-to-coast nonstop. The Pilatus is a great offering with seating for up to eight people; because it can land at many smaller airports that otherwise would be inaccessible. What’s your plan for Nicholas Air, both in terms of fleet and strategy, looking at the next 5 to 10 years? We try to add a minimum of two aircraft per year. Currently on our radar is the longer-range Longitude. Our decision whether to incorporate it into the fleet will be based on member demands. Nicholas Air is family-owned and operated, not private equity or funded by investors; no one dictates how we should or must run our business model, except for our members. What type of consumer programs do you offer — jet cards, fractional shares and leases, management, on-demand charter, other services — and which areas are growing the fastest?

Although we are a full-service provider, the Jet Card program is the most popular. It’s ideal for introducing people to private aviation and for anyone planning to travel between 15 and 60 hours a year. There is no expiration date of the hours or aircraft repositioning fees and members gain access to our fleet, which averages five years old and newer.

Does Nicholas Air continue to manage aircraft for owners? Yes, and we’re seeing that part of our business grow because the business jet market segment is on the upswing again. In addition to maintaining aircraft for corporations and individuals, Nicholas Air helps owners generate revenue by leasing them back to us to supplement our core fleet, thus helping the owner offset the costs of ownership.

How have digital technology and social media impacted your business strategy? Technology advances are certainly important and beneficial in the aviation industry. Our concern is the potential for social media and digital communications to detract How is Nicholas Air different than from person-to-person interaction with competitors in the business aviation our members. FOREIGN INVESTORS It was not so long ago that foreign investors avoided the United States in droves. But that is no longer the case. In recent years, a heightened emphasis on compliance and transparency around the world has leveled the global playing field and transformed the U.S. into a desirable destination for non-U.S. wealth, according to Amy Szostak, chief fiduciary officer of Northern Trust’s Global Family and Private Investment Offices.

These days, upwards of $500 billion in wealth flows into the U.S. annually, primarily from Latin America and Asia-Pacific. The price of transparency “Transparency is generally seen as a good thing, “says Szostak, “but for many wealthy families, it can carry a heavy cost if it compromises their physical security.”

This drawback is especially true in countries with political uncertainty, strongman rule and hostility toward the wealthy, which has families worried about privacy, security and even physical safety. “Given the global demand for transparency, clients are considering their jurisdictional options for reporting.

Global private banking consolidation has, in part, been due to the rising costs of reporting, compliance and data security. “Not all parties are created equal, however, in their ability to collect, store and transmit personal data. Non-U.S. families are looking for stable jurisdictions, so they can feel confident that firms have invested in the infrastructure, security and technology, making it less likely that their information will fall into the wrong hands,” Szostak says. Subsequently, many families have moved their assets to the U.S., drawn by the promise of political and economic stability and superior data security.

“We have a long history of trust enforceability, in contrast to civil law jurisdictions,” Szostak says. At the same time, foreign nationals also can feel assured that some foreign legal judgements in the U.S. are largely unenforceable. Szostak explains: “In some countries, ‘forced heirship’ confers preferential status on the first-born male child, excluding female heirs and young siblings. In the U.S., people are generally free to dispose of their assets as they wish.”

“We have had these conversations with our clients from Western Europe to South America; the United Kingdom to the Middle East,” Szostak says.

02 Wave Lounge Bringing the beauty and power of an ocean wave into your home, the Wave Lounge by Eduard Locota Design Studio invites you to ride the wave of relaxation. The Wave Lounge totally disregards conventional design, creating a sculptural and functional lounge that encapsulates the embodiment of a wave near its breaking point. With vibrant blue tones, vivid transparency and its expression of motion and energy, it reflects the relationship between humans and water. This monolithic piece is built by hand, using more than 60 layers of acrylic and taking nearly two months to complete. Limited to only five pieces, the Wave Lounge will have you floating in a sea of peace and style. 03 Crete Table Using the Mediterranean Sea for inspiration, Eduard Locota Design Studio’s Crete Table brings together land and water encapsulated in a moment in time. Available in different sizes, the Crete Table is a bond between nature and the living space. Unlike most tables, this one only has three legs — which brings it an unusual shape inspired by the monumental cathedral arch design while providing excellent stability. As one’s viewpoint of the table changes, so does the table itself. Each angle is truly incomparable. Handmade using marble and 60 layers of acrylic, the Crete table takes three months to make. In addition, Eduard allows for clients to make this a true one-of-a-kind piece by choosing what island or part of an island they wish to be sculpted and incorporated into the top layer of the table. 04 Menhir Lamp The Menhir by Achille Salvagni is the perfect side table for any contemporary home. With its stark edges and playful yet futuristic elegance, the Menhir adds an artful touch to any room. This handcrafted sculptural piece showcases a polished gold-lacquered fiberglass base and an onyx top. The onyx top illuminates, adding light and a soothing ambiance. The piece is limited to only 40 editions.

01 Loco Logo As social media creeps insidiously into every aspect of our lives and our eyes remain glued to screens most of our day, it’s no surprise that messaging, or memes — whether they be encouraging words or phrases expressing our dissent — are reaching a fever pitch. Wearing clothing with messaging identifies us with a particular group in an immediate and simple way. Fashion brands are no exception to this popular trend. It’s hard to trace exactly where the current iteration of logo-imbued fashion originated. It may have been the skateboard lover’s brand Supreme with its daily around-theblock queue of fans waiting to obtain an emblazoned T-shirt with their simple logo. Most likely it was the Vuitton-ization of Supreme’s name that Kim Jones, (former Louis Vuitton men’s creative director) initiated a few years ago. It’s hard to imagine a customer who was able to attain the highly coveted red trunks and bags with the Supreme/Vuitton partnership — they were sold out soon after they hit Instagram (they may have kept inventory very low to increase the desire factor) but suddenly it became ok to wear your brand proudly. The logo became a design element. Luxury brands have now adopted the logo craze full on. Branded products soon will hit retail no matter how the fire was ignited. Just think of the cash CEOs will save on advertising with men acting as walking billboards this fall. Whether it’s a leather shoe, a mink bag or a fully tricked-out outfit, men are choosing the club that fits with their aesthetic and fearlessly — maybe even ironically — wearing the brand on their sleeves. So, choose your club, there’ll be no misunderstanding to which you belong, then post, like and hashtag away.

02 Haute Couture You may have heard the term Haute Couture used to describe everything from well-fitting jeans to a slinky evening gown. But the true definition needs to tick some very specific boxes — and the boxes need to be French. The term literally translates to “high sewing.” The actual sewing and fitting require the work of seamstresses at an Atelier in Paris — that’s right — only in Paris. The rules are decreed by Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture (a French organization) and must be strictly adhered to. It’s an old-fashioned and rigorous process, from the client falling in love with a look on the runway to the final made-to-order garment — the ultimate in personalized service. Chanel and Christian Dior are as classic as brie and a baguette and are among the few brands that engage in this time-honored enterprise. Karl Lagerfeld for the house of Chanel is prolific in his ability to design and produce fashion shows, and for couture show he’s been elevating mundane Parisian scenes — most recently a specific walk along the banks of the river Seine (03). Wooden locked boxes were part of the set and mimicked the actual book-selling containers and vendors that are planted by the quay. The models strolled down the sidewalk with “Teddy-Boy” hairstyles, which gave the models a masculine edge. It was all about the hip-high slit in skirts and dresses that revealed matching hot pants. Skirts of varying lengths and styles were paired with mid-heel ankle boots and gave a nonchalance to the models who walked with ease. Why not? They are wearing Chanel. At Dior (02), designer Maria Grazia Chiuri dialed back the dramatic presentation and opted to put her dress-making skills at center stage. Dress after sugar-spun dress in shades of nude and pastels — the kind that will stay in a client’s closet for years without ever going out of style — seemingly floated down the runway. No attention-grabbing antics or high-concept staging was necessary. It was purposefully distilled to the essence of a fashion show: beautiful clothing. But the appeal of one of these dresses can only be experienced by the wearer when she feels the interior elegance of handmade stitching fitted explicitly for her. This old-fashioned, one-on-one, person-toperson, designer-to-client idea is one that we should all welcome whether we are a Couture client or an outsider looking in. Artisanal handiwork is something to celebrate.

OW N E R’ S S U I T E BLUE MOON WORDS DICK DUCHOSSOIS

I have owned the 198-foot (60.35m) luxury motor yacht BLUE MOON since we took delivery from Feadship in 2005. She is my third Feadship; each one has taught me more about how to use your yachts for pleasure and entertaining. When I purchased my first Feadship, it was four years old and in perfect shape; she was 158 feet (48.15m). Like so many owners, there were, of course, a few things we wanted to change. After delivery, our minds were made up.

We knew that someday we would build a yacht based on what we learned from the first one we owned. Having always wanted to retire and spend most of our time on the water seeing the world, we began designing our next yacht with all of the elements we felt were missing on the first. We then took delivery on a 165-foot (50.29m) Feadship, which we thought we’d keep for the rest of our lives — this was wishful thinking. Five years later, we took delivery of a 198-foot Feadship.

We chose a 198-foot (60.35m) Feadship because it had all of the things we wanted for the comfort of the crew and our guests and family. We will never regret it. We have a wonderful crew and a yacht that takes us anywhere that we, and our guests, would like to go. The people of Feadship treated us so well, and the quality of their work was so exceptional, we didn’t want to start relationships with the other great boatyards.

We use the BLUE MOON about 80 to 100 days per year on average. When we are aboard, it’s like living in a different world. We can sleep in the morning without an alarm or stay out all night with guests if we like. We mostly do our entertaining on the boat because there are so many ways to entertain. We have traveled from Alaska to the Mediterranean. It would be difficult to say what we like best, because every place has been tremendous. We don’t really have a favorite. We genuinely have liked every place we’ve been. We’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy the kind of trips that you can’t do with a car or a plane; there is no limit to what you can do with a yacht. Plus, you meet such wonderful people of all different nationalities when traveling by yacht. There is a common language for those who arrive to a new port via yacht. Arrival in port presents a wonderful opportunity to speak about your yacht and for others tell you about theirs. When you have a yacht, it makes no difference as to age, nationality or native tongue; the world all becomes one and that truly is one of the most unique and exciting elements of being a yacht owner. BLUE MOON is available on the charter market; she is listed with Northrop & Johnson.

Whether you are planning a city break by taking in Cape Town’s iconic sights and the beautiful winelands behind or using it as a leisurely entrée into a longer vacation, perhaps taking in a safari, the city provides a glamorous springboard into South Africa. Pillow Talk Offering a multitude of city-center and waterfront hotels, Cape Town’s hotel scene punches well above its weight considering the city’s manageable size. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is one of the most convenient places to stay while in the city with views of Table Mountain, the Atlantic and easy access to both designer boutiques and entertainment local to your hotel. With several awards under its belt, the One&Only Cape Town is considered by most to be the most glamorous property in the city. Set right on the buzzing waterfront, it is all about sleek accommodation and designer dining (the hotel is home to Africa’s only Nobu restaurant). For the ultimate in boutique suites, The One Above penthouse (located above the One&Only) is undoubtedly the most desirable hotel room in the city. It even has its own rooftop pool. If your tastes run more to boutique hotels, then the ultra-chic Cape View Clifton is the place to head for a laid-back coastal vibe. The pale, soothing interiors combined with the stunning views over the Twelve Apostles and the four beaches of Clifton provide the ultimate bolthole and there is no need to brave the freezing cold waters of the Atlantic that lap the beach below thanks to its rooftop pool.

Eat & Drink The cultural and geographical brew that is modern South Africa has yielded an array of constantly evolving culinary traditions. The variety of food styles available, combined with the fresh and very local produce on tap from the sea and farms around Cape Town, mean that the city has more than its share of world-class restaurants. Many of the best restaurants are found in its hotels where superb food is complemented by top-end wine cellars and service. For Asian-style cuisine with a nod to locally sourced ingredients, head to Nobu at the One&Only. At Camps Bay, the Marly Hotel has its own Japanese restaurant UMI. With a vibey buzz and elegant dÊcor, the menu is a mixture of traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine with inventive twists. Myoga at the Vineyard Hotel has developed a worldwide reputation as one of the Cape’s finest culinary attractions. With an emphasis on contemporary fusion, chef Mike Bassett serves everything from casual cocktails and tapas to seven-course tasting menus. For a fashionable feast, book well in advance for a table at The Test Kitchen in Woodstock. With its theatrical food created by chef Luke Dale-Roberts, the fabulous food flavors and experimental style will leave you wondering about his other two restaurants in the city. The Pot Luck Club, also in Woodstock, has an edgier side with a restaurant and gallery on the rooftop with stunning views; while The Shortmarket Club, located off trendy Bree Street, has a classic menu entirely in keeping with the opulent old world feel of the heritage building in which it resides. For scenic eating The Roundhouse has the best views. Tucked away in the Glen Forest, it looks across Camps Bay to the rocky outcrops of the Twelve Apostles. Those looking for somewhere smart, The Greenhouse at The Cellars-Hohenort is set amidst beautiful gardens and, for something more casual, the Chefs Warehouse and Canteen on Bree Street is a fun place to enjoy tapas.

See & Shop With a spirited local art scene, a new museum and galleries aplenty, Cape Town has upped its cultural game in recent years. As the U.S. dollar buys nearly 14 rand, it’s also a popular place for visitors looking to shop in designer boutiques. Head to the downtown stores on Bree Street for Missibaba (the Anya Hindmarch of South Africa) and jewelry by Kirsten Goss. For Africa’s most out-there fashion, head to Merchants on Long. Escape the heat of the sun and slip into the recently opened Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art (Zeitz MOCAA). With seven floors of contemporary African work and an interactive space for children, it has become one of the world’s best contemporary museum spaces. If your viewings inspire you, then head to the designer suburb of Woodstock where you will find a cluster of galleries, including Stevenson, Blank Projects, and the Goodman Gallery.

Do & Discover From rosé-edged vineyards and shell-strewn beaches to forested mountain ranges, Cape Town is surrounded by natural beauty. Nowhere is this more obvious than from Lion’s Head; the peak adjacent to Table Mountain affords 360-degree views of the sea, hills and scorched rocks. Drive out of town along the twisting Chapman’s Peak Drive. Skirting the coast between Noordhoek and Hout Bay for a distance of five miles, the drive offers a cornucopia of sweeping beaches. Hout Bay is well worth a visit in its own right to enjoy the antics of the resident seals or head on to Boulders Beach where you can play in the shallows with a colony of African penguins.

SAFARI Any visit to South Africa beyond a few days should include a safari. Most big game is located further north and requires a short flight to take you within easy reach of the famous Kruger National Park. Here you will find the celebrated Singita Sweni Lodge — just one of the properties in the Singita portfolio, which is owned and managed by the Bailes family. The luxurious hospitality group is more about conservation than hospitality, but it still does the latter in spectacular fashion. One of the greatest luxuries it provides is the exclusive experience of viewing game on its private reserves; in the Kruger National Park, it has a 33,000-acre concession. Perched atop the Sweni River’s forested banks, the seven-suite, ultracontemporary boutique lodge is among the African bush’s most luxurious and the dining is the best found on safari. From the swanky lodge guests are treated to up-close sightings of impalas, crocodiles, hippos and monkeys, while twice-daily game excursions are via Land Rover or walking safari — both allowing guests to get as close an Out of Africa experience as possible with the concentration of the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo). There is no question that this is the place to stay in Kruger.

CAPE WINELANDS While Cape Town, Table Mountain and the coastline offer ample diversions, if your tastes tend more to the vinous then the 200-plus vineyards that cover the verdant hills of the Western Cape are the ultimate lure. About an hour’s drive from the city, lying at the center of wine production, Franschhoek is the oldest settlement in South Africa. With one main street and a population of just 20,000, it also has the unlikely distinction of being one of the world’s gastronomic capitals with dozens of fantastic restaurants to suit every palate.

Pillow Talk The Western Cape is famed not only for scenic wine tours but also for its stunning boutique hotels. Many of the chicest properties are found in the converted white painted homesteads that date back to the 1800s. Within walking distance to the pavement café society of Franschhoek, Leeu House is an amalgamation of three properties that make up the 12-room hotel. Probably the most luxurious option within the town, it is an exemplar of classic Cape Dutch and boasts a garden and large pool with views over the mountains beyond.

The charming Le Quartier Français (sister property to Leeu House and part of the Leeu Collection) has been a venerable member of the most prestigious boutique properties in the wine country for more than 25 years. Following a huge renovation last year, rooms are French country style with a contemporary spin; the property offers a pool, spa, private screening room, and award-winning restaurant La Petite Colombe. Many of the wine estates also have their own luxury accommodation in converted buildings, all of which afford spectacular views due to their position on the verdant hillsides. High up on the pass between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, the stunning Delaire Graff Estate is home to ten uber-luxury lodges, each with its own plunge pool and butler; six more are set to open this year. There is an awardwinning restaurant on the estate (more on that below), a spa and landscaped gardens that showcase a grand collection of South African and international art and sculptures. Eat & Drink The Cape Winelands has a high concentration of stellar restaurants serving inventive farm-to-table cuisine. With its 60-plus award-winning restaurants, the small town of Franschhoek is often referred to as the gourmet capital of South Africa.

The restaurant at the Grande Provence wine estate has won many accolades, and chef Guy Bennet’s dishes reflect the beauty and heritage of the estate. Alternatively, head to one of Franschhoek’s leading restaurants La Petite Ferme. The property is perched high above the town and affords spectacular views accompanied by country style gourmet cuisine. The Delaire Graff Restaurant is all about fresh, classic favorites with South African flair. The estate has its own greenhouse dedicated to growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs for the restaurant and, of course, an expansive collection of Delaire wines to choose from. For magnificent views over the Simonsberg Mountains and a distant outline of Table Mountain, request a table on the terrace under the shade of the large pine oaks. Do & Discover Explore the Winelands on horseback, riding along forest tracks and up into the mountains, stopping at wineries for tasting sessions and sampling the culinary delights of a gourmet picnic.

Take a walk through the gardens of the Grande Provence estate to view their continually evolving collection of sculptures. Alternatively, the landscaped gardens at the Delaire Graff Estate also are worth visiting for the modern sculptures that line the paths and a 360-degree view that will stop you in your tracks. For an alternative type of stroll, Franschhoek is a must for any serious shopaholic. Boasting independent boutiques, contemporary art galleries and jewelry shops, wander along the main street and through the pedestrian square, taking a break at one of the artisan coffee shops along the way. Browsing doesn’t get any better. Spa The Delaire Graff Spa offers a holistic menu of beauty and relaxation treatments. The award-winning Grace Bay Beach of Providenciales and the “sister islands” of Turks & Caicos continue to draw not only new and repeat visitors to Turks & Caicos Islands, but also keen interest from some of the world’s most luxurious resort brands. Ramon Andrews, Director of Tourism, recently announced the planned development of “no fewer than five impressive new resort projects for our islands. These include the Ritz-Carlton, now breaking ground on Provo, Six Senses Resort on pristine Salt Cay, Turks Cay in the Turtle Cove area of Provo, Tuscona, also on Provo and Royal Reef, on North Caicos — all are projected to open within the next two to three years. A longtime favorite resort company, Grace Bay Resorts is developing a much-anticipated new, cool resort to be named Rock House.”

In addition to all these new luxury developments, many existing resorts are expanding, including Pine Cay’s Meridian Club with new cottages, Provo’s Gansevoort with new villas and Amanyara’s upgraded villas on Provo’s exclusive Northwest Point. The Shore Club’s villa collection is launching, and Parrot Cay is making impressive advances to their already famous spa. The easily accessible Turks & Caicos Islands continue to be a favored destination for culinary getaways as well as relaxed, luxe escapes. From the fresh, flavorful seafood offered at every corner to world-class chefs behind the delectable dishes at any of the islands’ restaurants, there is no doubt that Turks & Caicos offerings lure well-traveled gastronomes. Spirits aficionados delight in local rum punches by the beach, famous cocktails by local mixologists and regional craft beers served up at lively beach bars.

“We look forward to our Wine & Food Festival, Conch Festival and Lobster Fest, all happening in the fall,” said Andrews. “With impressive airlift from many major U.S. and Canadian gateways, including Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, Dallas and Charlotte, — and launching in December a new American Airlines flight from Chicago — we are poised to be the luxury destination of choice for smart and discerning travelers from all parts of North America. And of course, British Airways also serves Provo from London.” For more information: www.turksandcaicostourism.com. T 649-946-4970. E info@turksandcaicostourism

01 Just Like Riding a Bike The makers of the Manta5 Hydrofoil bike wanted to create an experience that was as close as one could get to the feeling of riding a bike, but on the water, of course. The whole contraption looks like something found in a futuristic gym, with carbon fiber hydrofoils where the front wheel would be and a silent electric motor working with the chain and gearbox at the back. Every bit is designed to withstand harsh marine conditions, and the body itself is constructed from aviation-grade aluminum. It’s also modularly designed so it can be easily stowed on board. The Manta 5 Hydrofoil can be adjusted to suit each rider, from manual to pedal assist modes. The electric motor assist helps the rider keep going, as does the buoyant-friendly design, allowing safe handling even in choppy conditions. Mastering this foiling machine is a bit like learning to ride a bike, but on water — and once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you won’t soon forget. 02 Easy Rider The creators of the Jetfoiler, Kai Concepts, are experts in foiling technology. Having created the Kiteboat — a foiling trimaran pulled by a kite that sails three times the speed of wind — the team transferred its expertise into a fun, safe and easy-to-use electric foilboard. This motorized surfboard combines hydrofoiling with an electric motor, skimming the top of the water. Wake-free, nearly silent and clean to use in the ocean, nothing gets in the way of the feeling of carving into the waves. Everything is controlled by a handheld remote control (that attaches by a leash to the board), which lets the “surfer” adjust speed and direction with ease. These boards are lightweight but also sturdy, constructed from materials found in high-speed racing boats. Now, whether there are waves near you or not, it’s always “surf’s up!”

03 Artful Tender British yacht tender builder Cockwells has unleashed its latest custom-designed creation, the 34-foot Titian Tender. Titian Vecelli was one of the greatest painters of the 16th century and, in keeping with its namesake, this tender is nothing short than a work of art. Speed and style meet in this gorgeous craft with sleek lines based on a concept by esteemed superyacht design studio RWD. The construction itself is a nod to the past with the technology of a future — durable composites are combined with resilient yellow cedar wood and teak. The interior — designed by expert car designers Cullum Bespoke — is just as luxe with silk panels and fine artworks found in the cabin below. Though fit for a museum, the Titian is one piece of art better enjoyed on the water.

Then when it’s time for a break, this craft magically transforms to offer day boat-like comfort. The GTX has a large swim platform on the back, and one of the rider seats also removes to create a huge space for sunning on the sandbar. THE ADVENTURE BEGINS Beautiful beaches tucked in secret coves, nature trails that culminate in breath-taking scenery and a daily indulgence of stunning sunsets are all part of an Antiguan odyssey. The Nelson’s Dockyard is the centerpiece attraction of an amazing spot in the Caribbean, deservedly declared by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site. Accommodations are uniquely attractive as modern yachts are comfortably hosted at the dockside of history, dating back centuries to the exploits of the famed British commander Admiral Horatio Nelson. The Dockyard is the only such harbor from the Georgian period still operating in the world today. The adventure awaits around the indented coastline of an island that boasts 365 amazing white sandy beaches. You may not have all year to spend in Antigua, but a short visit provides enough time to whet your appetite.

Beauty Beyond The striking coastline of Antigua is full of character as it bends and twists into amazing displays of rock formations. Some beaches are accessed only by sea. Set sail after breakfast for the island’s south coast well beyond the stunning Pillars of Hercules where you can drop anchor beyond a reef barrier that stretches for miles. It’s famously called Cades Reef and it holds beautiful sea life in the crystal-clear turquoise waters. The award-winning Carlilse Bay Resort is close by; pre-arrangements can be made for spa treatments.

Hello, Barbuda! Barbuda is a nature lover’s dream and an adventure unto its own self. The island is the smaller of the twin island nation of Antigua and Barbuda. IF THERE’S ONE CATEGORY OF CAR THAT BELONGS TO THE BRITISH, IT IS SURELY THE CLASSIC GRAND TOURER OR ‘GT’

AUTO GRAND TOURERS WORDS SIMON DE BURTON

N A V I G A T O R A U T O

GT GRAND TOURER ORIGINS Although equally synonymous with the 1950s and 1960s, when French and Italian marques used the initials on countless models, the actual act of motorized “grand touring” arguably dates from the 1920s and 1930s when wealthy British automobilists realized that they not only had the time and the money to explore “the continent” (as they termed mainland Europe), but also a wealth of stylish cars that were sufficiently fast, comfortable and reliable to make the journey a pleasure. Among favored routes was the one from Calais to the French Riviera, a journey that led to the celebrated “Blue Train race” in which Bentley Boy Woolf Barnato (06) laid a bet that he could not only beat the locomotive that regularly made the journey from Cannes to Calais, but that he could be relaxing in one of London’s more exclusive clubs before the Blue Train had even made it to the northern port. Despite being stopped and fined by the police for racing on a public highway, having to slow down for fog and losing time trying to find fuel, Barnato and his Bentley Speed Six made it to the Conservative Club on London’s St. James’s Street just in time — four minutes before the train drew to a halt in Calais. Bentley, famous for its “grand tourers” ever since has now set a new Grand Tourer benchmark with its latest Continental GT described here — although it’s not the only U.K. car that’s capable of munching the miles with ease as this British GT selection demonstrates.

06

01 Rolls-Royce Wraith Tradition has it that Bentley makes cars for the sporting aristocrat, while Rolls-Royce makes car for those who would really rather be chauffeured, but that was all turned on its head with the arrival of the Rolls-Royce Wraith in 2013. This butch-but-beautiful two-door coupe was described at launch by the marque’s CEO, Torsten Muller-Otvos, as “the ultimate gentleman’s Gran Turismo” thanks to the 624-horsepower churned out by its mighty, V12, twin-turbocharged engine and dynamic handling traits that enable it to be hustled through the type of twisty roads more usually suited to compact Italian sports cars. This sporting side is further enhanced in the latest “Black Badge” version of the Wraith, a special model aimed at younger drivers, which is lower, meaner, sharper and more aggressive. The famous Rolls-Royce radiator grille gets a moody, blackened finish that is carried through to the boot lid trim, air inlets, exhaust tail pipes — and even the legendary Spirit of Ecstasy mascot itself which, according to the blurb “mutates into a high-gloss black vamp, proudly scything through the nighttime cityscape.” And who wouldn’t be proud to cross the city — or an entire continent — in a Wraith? – Engine 6.6 liter, twin turbocharged V12 623bhp 0-60mph 4.4 seconds Top speed 155mph (limited) Fuel consumption 18mpg Cost From $400,000

02 Bentley Continental GT The Bentley Continental GT marked a major change of fortunes for the once-ailing marque when it was launched in 2003. The first Bentley to be produced using mass production techniques and the first to emerge after the Volkswagen Group’s takeover of the upstanding British firm, its six-liter, W12 twin turbo engine and four-wheel drive gave it a top speed of 180mph to match its muscular, coupe bodywork. Made available in numerous editions, including high performance models and convertibles, the Continental GT has become far and away the best-selling Bentley of all time with more than 65,000 built. Following the introduction of the restyled and upgraded second generation model in 2011, the Continental GT has now entered its third phase. Lighter, more powerful, more economical, better handling and better equipped than its predecessors, it has already been acclaimed as the best GT car on the market. Currently available only with the W12 engine, the car features a Porsche-designed chassis clothed in lightweight aluminum bodywork with an interior trimmed — of course — in the finest, hand-stitched hide. – Engine 6 liter, twin turbocharged W12, 626bhp 0-60mph 3.6 seconds Top speed 207mph Fuel consumption 23mpg Cost From $285,000

03 David Brown Speedback GT Silverstone Edition David Brown Automotive was established in 2014 by automotive entrepreneur David Brown to build 100 retro-inspired grand tourers based on the platform and powertrain of a Jaguar XKR but featuring bespoke, coach-built aluminum bodywork and tailored interiors — meaning each car takes 8,000 hours to complete. A recent move to new premises beside the Silverstone race circuit inspired the creation of this special version called the “Silverstone Edition” that takes styling cues from the early days of jet aviation, hence the “Fly by Night” tungsten silver paint job, a more streamlined body, 20-inch “Afterburner” wheels and a jet-inspired exhaust system. Rear windows are dark tinted for a “stealth” look, while the aviation theme continues inside with “brogue” and embroidered antique leathers, scorched wood veneers, Alcantara surfaces and beautifully executed details such as aluminum air vents reminiscent of the blades of a jet turbine. And, while the regular Speedback has two rear seats, the Silverstone Edition does away with these in favor of a luggage platform that can be accessed from the main rear load area, which houses a fold-out picnic seat with a base that can be customized to store cameras, shotguns or fishing tackle. Currently, buyers of the Speedback GT must make their own arrangements for importing the car into the U.S. – Engine 5 liter, supercharged V8 510bhp 0-60mph 4.6 seconds Top speed 155mph (limited) Fuel consumption 25mpg Cost From £744,000

04 Aston Martin DB11 Launched in 2016 as a replacement for the ageing DB9, the DB11 is a two-plus-two grand tourer that, according to Aston Martin’s CEO Andy Palmer, “could be the most important car in the history of the company.” The beautifully flowing aluminum bodywork designed by chief creative officer Marek Reichman represents a masterclass in automotive aerodynamics, with its rear “AeroBlade” vents playing the part of “virtual spoiler” to channel wind through discreet, side-mounted intakes and out through slots at the back to form a jet of disrupted air that reduces lift. Under the huge clamshell hood buyers can opt for a twin-turbocharged V12 engine in the ultraperformance “AMR” model or a V8 turbo supplied by Mercedes-AMG and mildly adapted to provide a more Aston Martin-like exhaust note and driving characteristics. In my opinion, the smallerengine version is the more desirable of the two, despite being less “extreme” than the V12. And, of course, it offers that wondrous V8 growl that no one understands better than an American car fan. – Engine 5.2 liter, twin turbocharged V12 630bhp or 4 liter, twin turbocharged V8 503bhp 0-60mph 3.7 seconds/3.9 seconds Top speed 208mph/187mph Fuel consumption 20mpg/24mpg Cost 05 From $200,000

05 McLaren 570GT Since the 570GT has a 62-horsepower engine and a 204mph top speed, many might expect it to be McLaren’s ultimate high-speed offering, but not only is it from the marque’s so-called “entry level” Sports series, it’s also the gentler touring version; the 570S officially being the “performance” model. Although its racetrack looks might give the impression that it’s a hard-core competition car rather than a practical tourer, the 570GT is quiet, incredibly smooth, superbly refined and irrationally comfortable — it really is one of those cars that, once you’re settled into the driving seat, you just want to keep on going. There’s even a trunk to hold a worthwhile amount of (soft) luggage, a proper glovebox and, yes, a cup holder. Although there are several faster, more expensive options in McLaren Automotive “Super Series” and “Ultimate Series,” the 570GT would certainly be my choice as a relaxing, high-speed continent crosser. – Engine 3.8 liter, twin turbocharged V8 562bhp 0-60mph 3.4 seconds Top speed 204mph Fuel consumption 26mpg Cost From $198,000

S A V I N G ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY LUXURY BEAUTY PRODUCTS WORDS NATALIA LANGSDALE The “Deep Blue” represents the origins of life and the future of mankind. With the fundamental connection between the oceans and humanity, it has increasingly become our mission to be mindful of the worldwide environmental movement to keep our Earth beautiful and thriving.

Plastic, toxic chemicals and synthetics are slowly but surely being removed to make room for sustainably sourced, plant-derived ingredients and green packaging that not only make us look and feel amazing, but, first and foremost, are kind to the ecosystems surrounding us.

Following the ban on micro-beads and plans by various governments to reduce pollution and waste, more and more of the luxury beauty brands we know and love have begun lifting the lid on natural, organic and eco-friendly products.

Making it essential to invest in ocean-friendly beauty and grooming products on board yachts has never been more apparent. One iconic French spa marine brand to have taken the matter to heart is THALGO.

Blue is the New Green The THALGO brand was born from the oceans and has been, since its inception in 1964, committed to protecting the environment and the seabed. THALGO has a strict eco-design policy and the brand affirms a strong desire to reduce its environmental footprint by investing in the installation of photovoltaic cells, the creation of a wastewater treatment plant and the selection of labeled recyclable packaging suppliers for the greater good of nature. The THALGO pact of beauty vows to offer safe and natural beauty products that are free from ingredients of animal origin or that might include parabens, mineral oils, GMOs or are subject to animal testing. Thus, all of the THALGO products are based on marine extracts taken from non-polluted controlled areas. Natural active ingredients that actively regenerate the skin are then added. THALGO’s products provide the assurance of “Safe Beauty” that respects both the skin and the environment. Bursting the Bubble It is becoming more apparent that beauty brands looking to do good today and in the future are focusing on formulas that do not contain parabens, mineral oils, propylene glycol, GMOs or ingredients of animal origin. Also, working as an Ecocert certified production site equally helps minimize the ecological footprint. For the past 50 years, the THALGO research and development center has been studying 230 marine active ingredients. THALGO has created 12 exclusive active ingredients, including seven patents, using 62 active ingredients from marine and biomimetic sources. Some of these include sea water, sea salts, marine mud, micro-marine organisms and maritime plants. All are all highly concentrated in essential nutrients, including minerals, trace elements, vitamins and amino acids that are directly absorbed by the skin and are beneficial to the body.

In 2017, the back-to-back hurricanes that hit a large portion of the Caribbean archipelago did of course negatively affect a number of the most popular winter cruising grounds. But the good news is that, although some of the favorite yachting hot spots suffered some serious damage, the storms actually missed more than 70 percent of the region, which stretches across one million square miles, entirely.

Unfortunately, it was primarily the British Virgin Islands, Barbuda, St. Barth’s, St. Martin and Anguilla that took the brunt of the hit; but their recoveries have been strong and the majority of the resorts, marinas and restaurants have benefitted from top-to-toe renovations and are in some ways better than ever. The forthcoming winter season welcomes back many old favorites, and also a handful of newcomers.

ANGUILLA The tiny island of Anguilla is the place to head if you really want to get away from it all. The flattest island in the entire archipelago, it was badly hit by the hurricanes, but the island has been steadily bouncing back and is now better than ever and ready for the winter season. The best way to experience Anguilla’s tranquil shores is, of course, by yacht. Step ashore for the island’s creative culinary scene, spectacular beaches (33 of them) and some of the Caribbean’s top resorts.

One of the first high-end resorts to open in Anguilla, the CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa (03) has won many awards during its 20 years. Located in the famed Rendezvous Bay, plans are now afoot to reopen in November 2018 following a multimillion-dollar refit. In the meantime, sister property The Reef by CuisinArt (01) is already up and running and 100 percent ready to welcome superyacht guests to enjoy its many culinary scenes, including the aptly named Yacht Club. The Malliouhana Hotel & Spa is another The rebranded Four Seasons Resort & of Anguilla’s original luxury resorts. This Residences Anguilla (formerly known as the boutique property will re-open in November Viceroy Anguilla) opened earlier this year. Set 2018 with new owners and extensive atop coralline bluffs, this is the place to head changes. The resort’s restaurants are still for the ultimate sundowner overlooking the to be fully confirmed, but the hotel’s new convergence of Barnes and Meads bays. owners hope to carry forward its reputation for gastronomy and for having the best wine cellar on the island. The brand-new Belmond Cap Juluca also opens in November 2018 with fabulous rooms and guest areas, a beachfront infinity edge pool, a spa, rustic beach bar, and restaurants. Expect old-world charm with new-world comforts.

Punching above its weight in terms of facilities is the intimate, nine-suite Quintessence Hotel (02) on Anguilla’s Long Bay Beach. One of the latest luxury boutique hotels to open in the Caribbean, this tropical grand mansion in colonial style is the place to head for an indulging custom spa treatment. The property also boasts a restaurant, two bars, a pool, a yoga pavilion and lush tropical gardens, all set on the white sands of Long Bay Beach. Much of Anguilla’s best cuisine is served up in the aforementioned resorts, but a few stand-alone, independent restaurants also can offer a little Caribbean flair. Head to Veya (ray of sunlight in Carib Indian) for its under-the-radar, low-key vibe and fabulous vegan menu.

It is worth heading ashore to the family owned Da’Vida, not only for its idyllic location on the beach at Crocus Bay, but also for the array of dining options, including a fusion of Asian and Caribbean menu at the Main House, live music at the Bayside on a Sunday, or tapas and cocktails at the Tamarind Lounge. And for the best bars? The legendary Pumphouse was unfortunately a casualty of Irma and blew away; but the island’s other institution, Bankie Banx Dune Preserve, although destroyed, has been rebuilt and is back better than ever with enhanced dining and bar areas.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost van Dyke, Tortola, Peter Island, to name just a few, are part the 50-plus islands that make up the British Virgin Islands (BVI), which took a very heavy beating in back-to-back hurricanes. Reclining to the east of the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda, which is arguably the most popular of the archipelago among the yachting crowd, was especially hard hit. Two of the most popular and well-known resorts, the Bitter End Yacht Club and Little Dix Bay, are being restored with the aim of welcoming guests back onto their shores in late 2019, but it is taking some time as a large extent the devastation has meant starting entirely from scratch. Those looking to cruise the BVI this coming season should still not, however, be deterred. The beautiful waters teem with resilient sea life, and the white sand beaches have been cleaned up and restored to their previous stunning condition.

Those wishing to step ashore also will find a number of resorts that have been renovated and are ready to welcome guests, including the Anegada Beach Club, Cooper Island, Guana Island, and Scrub Island Resort (05), Spa & Marina. A handful of other favorites also plan to open for the winter cruising season, including Biras Creek on Virgin Gorda, Necker Island Resort (04), and The Sugar Mill Hotel & Restaurant on Tortola. The most famous rum shack in the BVI, Foxy’s Tamarind Bar on Jost Van Dyke has long been popular with the sailing crowd. Its New Year’s Eve parties are legendary, and this year is set to be the best as the bar has been rebuilt for the season. Pre-hurricanes, the schooner Willy T was another place to head for a strong dose of Caribbean revelry. Destroyed in the storms, an entirely new and purpose-built Willy T’s is located at Peter Island and promises even more fun-fueled party action than before.

ANTIGUA & BARBUDA

Just 28 miles separate the dual-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, but the islands had two very different experiences during the storms last September. Antigua sustained only minor damage while Barbuda, which is the smaller island of the two, was almost entirely decimated and many of the island’s homes were destroyed. Plans are stirring for a vast new resort on the island in 2020. Currently known as the Paradise Found Resort, it has the backing of some significant A-listers, including Robert De Niro, James Packer and Nobu Matsuhisa, all of whom have an affinity for the island. The planned resort is one of the biggest stories for the entire region, let alone the tiny island, which has relatively few resorts.

Those planning to cruise the Leeward Islands anytime soon should steer a course for Barbuda. One property well worth stepping ashore to is the award-winning Barbuda Belle, which reopens in November 2018. Located in the almost uninhabited northern tip of the island at Cedar Point, this is the place to head for pampered isolation in the most stunning of settings. If you’re just anchoring, you can still get a taste of what the island has to offer with a kayak through the mangroves or a hike along the nearendless beaches on both the Caribbean and Atlantic sides.

ST. BARTH’S Unfeasibly stylish with great spirit, St. Barth’s is the epitome of Caribbean chic — it is, after all, the St. Tropez of the tropics, and never more so than when enjoyed from the decks of a superyacht. Hurricane Irma hit the small French overseas island hard, but the island was well prepared for a hurricane and the clean up has been swift. The yachts have been flooding back in droves to support the island (between 40 and 50 yachts were moored around the island over the festive season just a few months after the storms hit); and all were warmly welcomed by the chic boutiques, bars and a handful of restaurants.

All the best-known restaurants — L’Isola, La Guérite, Shellona, Orega, Black Ginger, and the François Plantation, to name but a few — were ready for the fabled St. Barth’s Bucket, which took place in March, and welcomed superyacht owners from far and wide to enjoy the island’s “vie de bohème,” and with great success.

It was the first five-star hotel to re-open and has been welcoming guests who enjoy its low-key vibe (and aforementioned restaurant, François Plantation) throughout the year. Further around the island, LVMH’s Cheval Blanc reopens towards the end of the year and is set to welcome superyacht guests ashore to enjoy its culinary scene and Guerlain spa. The stellar hotel of Eden Rock, which suffered severe flooding, is set to open in time for Christmas, when it will unveil a huge transformation. Other favorites, including Le Sereno, Le Guanahani, Le Barthelemy Hotel & Spa, and Hotel Le Toiny, are set to open in Fall 2018.

Several resorts are up and running and the rest are planning to open for the 2018 holiday season, if not before. Villa Marie SaintBarth (06), the Caribbean outpost of what some consider to be St. Tropez’s best hotel also reopened in early March. Located high up on a hill overlooking Anse des Flamands, the property was spared the storm surge and flooding that hit many of the island’s best Nicholas Air provides private jet hotels and the damage was therefore confined solutions to the Caribbean. Caribbean at a Glance From the Leewards to the BVIs to the Windwards, every Caribbean group has its hero islands, and many were unaffected, while others bore minimal damage and were welcoming superyachts back to their shores within weeks. Several of the islands that were left untouched were prompt in their response to help neighbors in need and the efforts of all these individual nations combined have helped to rebuild the archipelagos even better than before. The Leeward islands chain counts Antigua and St. Barth’s as the jewels in their crown. Poles apart in style, their differences perfectly complement one another; combined they offer the best of everything. Despite their proximity, Antigua was merely hit by heavy winds and rain rather than the full force of the hurricanes, whereas St. Barth’s suffered severe damage. Over in the Windward chain, which was only minimally affected by the storms, St. Lucia and Mustique are the most popular of the islands dotted down the eastern Caribbean. One large, one small (and very exclusive) between them, they offer a plethora of activities for superyacht guests. Located at the northern tip of the West Indies, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the BVI both suffered severe damage. St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands is often referred to as the New York City of the Caribbean due to its bustling vibe. It is the perfect place to start a cruise through the Virgin Islands chain. Virgin Gorda, meanwhile, is most widely known by the yachting crowd for its combination of seafaring tradition and glamour. C U LT U R E S P Y ART IS DEAD (LONG LIVE ART) WORDS DANIEL SCHEFFLER

The good news is that there is more money in art today than ever before. The bad news is that there is more money in art today than ever before. A city like New York used to be for the artists, a place where they could come to create and live that almost perfect freedom. Today, the city is filled with expensive galleries selling art for hundreds of millions of dollars and the excessive rise of housing prices has forced the very artists creating this work to relocate. And with that, a glut of creativity has left New York — so where in the world has the art gone?

01

Museums are finding their own ways to stay relevant in this shake up by asking us, “Is art still relevant?” Like “Mobile Worlds,” at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, an applied arts museum in Hamburg organized by German curator Roger M. Buergel, packing a gallery with objects both valuable and cheap, unique or mass-created and by artists known and unknown and, finally, art that isn’t just placed in front of the viewer; art that challenges the very idea of itself. Or there is “Museum Hack,” the unconventional tour of the best museums in the world. One of their tours in the Metropolitan Museum in New York focuses solely on women artists, offers a wine stop midway, and features a discussion about the #MeToo movement.

02

As Hannah Gadsby, the Netflix phenomenon comedian from Tasmania, shares in her new show called “Nanette,” maybe Picasso shouldn’t be lauded for cubism, but be reconsidered for his ill treatment of women. This is how art is staying relevant; it’s not just hanging in a museum; it’s not just being critiqued from an ivory tower. It’s hit the Internet and it’s being discussed by comedians and art pomps alike. Today, technology is fueling the art world and the new art buyer is less concerned about art fairs or even galleries and rather is spending time online to curate their art buying experience. All hail technology and its gorgeous reach.

03

“There was a significant increase in the number of new buyers purchasing art during the last year and — U.S. Trust’s 2018 survey found that 43 percent more collectors bought art online compared with 2017 — and many of them are millennials,” says Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator at Saatchi Art, an online marketplace for art. The same report also found that nearly all (97%) of the millennial collectors they surveyed said they would buy art this year. “There has been a definite shift in comfort levels with purchasing art online, which I think reflects the fact that online galleries are finding new ways to combine a personal experience with technology, improving levels of confidence and trust in buyers.”

NEW ART BUYERS ARE ENTERING THE WORLD OF ART BY SKIPPING THE PERCEIVED SNOBBERY OF GALLERIES & FAIRS & ARRIVING DIRECTLY THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

104

N A V I G A T O R C U L T U R E S P Y

New art buyers are coming to the world of art by skipping the perceived snobbery of galleries and fairs and coming straight to art through social media; specifically, Instagram. Hiscox (the underwriter of insurance giant Lloyd’s of London) conducts an annual survey about the art market and they found that 79 percent of buyers under age 35 used Instagram as a means of exploring new artists. “This is having a hugely positive effect for online galleries as younger buyers move easily from social media to online galleries selling art,” says Wilson. And Rob Weisberg, CEO of Invaluable (an online live auction marketplace) agrees: “There has never been a more critical time for our industry to prepare and execute digital strategies that engage, inspire and capture the next generation of art buyers — Millennials.”

06

“Younger buyers are motivated by accessibility and by discovering art they really love that’s affordable, which makes the online experience much more likely to be something that they gravitate towards than going from one brick and mortar gallery after another where the selection is limited,” says Wilson. As she thinks the experience is often intimidating and prices are often high in comparison with online galleries where most sales are below $5,000.

A part of all this newness and evolution is Art Republic based in Jacksonville, Florida, which is changing the whole art world model. It has developed a revolutionary new model for the art industry, an Art House offering online sales, global exposure, events, curation and production for meaningful artists and designed for millennials; it modernizes and thus democratizes the market. As founder Jessica Santiago says: “The global art industry has been calling for an intervention for decades with no major innovation.” She believes that most of the current online commerce options have been designed by “old guard professionals” and are not with the insight and direction of actual millennials. “So, I think that they are missing major factors that create loyalty and advocacy,” she adds. Their method? An E-Commerce platform using Blockchain technology will protect artworks, allow digital art to become collectable, build trust among buyers, as well as allow artists to receive royalties on future resales of the work. A so-called new patronage model if you will. “ArtRepublic trusts in impacting change,” says Santiago. “Artists have always wielded technology to redefine the future, for everyone, from Leonardo da Vinci to Occupy Museums. The time is now for resurrecting the rightful role for artists, and their allies.”

One of the challenges of the online art market is the desire on the part of buyers for price transparency and quality assurance. But Saatchi Art prides itself on price transparency. In fact, as Wilson points out there is a price on every artwork they sell so buyers know upfront what the price is and don’t have to ask. “But I think a more widespread level of transparency through some kind of decentralized global inventory is a long way off,” she adds. “I can see the benefits of it for buyers, but I think that it goes against the grain of the foundations of so much of the art market, which remains one of the most unregulated industries in the world and thrives on a lack of transparency.”

Humans and animals evolve. It is our very nature. What makes us human is our ability to reflect. Creativity give us the context to do this and technology is the fuel for this progress. In fact, the future of living depends on it. The awe of technology and art together as compeers.

RISK MANAGEMENT

CUSTOMIZED PROTECTION WORDS CRISTA HAHN

Whether you own an antique sailing yacht or a cutting-edge carbon fiber racing yacht, you deserve reassurance knowing you have an insurance program in place that will protect your prized vessel and respond how you expect it to in the event of a claim. Not every sailing yacht insurance program is created equal, so it’s essential to work with an insurance professional with deep knowledge of the risks unique to sailing yachts and one who can recommend an appropriate insurance solution. John J. Gaffney, Marsh Private Client Services’ (PCS) Yacht Practice Leader and avid boater for more than 40 years, has developed a true understanding of the complexities of owning a sailing yacht. “Owners of sailing yachts need coverage beyond a traditional yacht insurance policy — they need a program that addresses unique sailing yacht risks, both on- and off-water risks, and is designed for global navigation,” Gaffney explains.

Advocacy Around the World One example of a risk that can get overlooked is coverage and placement of spare-part containers that are shipped and stored along a sailing yacht route. “Not only does Marsh PCS make sure spare-part containers are properly insured and going where they need to go, but our team also can offer input on selecting drop-off points along the route before a crew sets sail,” says Gaffney. If you race your sailing yacht, you want to ensure your navigation plans are defined ahead of time. The Marsh PCS Yacht Team can offer input on navigational limits and seek coverage terms that are compliant with U.S. regulations and international travel requirements. Once your crew reaches its destination, you’ll want to have insurance in place for non-owned or hired auto rentals to transport the crew. Marsh PCS can assist with auto coverage for rentals as well.

I immediately filed a claim. John personally called me and said not to worry because his team would handle everything for us. This was very comforting since the injured party became litigious,” the owner said. Gaffney noted, “Beyond the insurance program, working with a trusted insurance professional can make all the difference in getting the personalized service and advice one should expect from policy implementation, in the event of a claim, and throughout the longevity of the relationship.”

Support When You Need It Most When a guest of yacht owner Michael P. suffered an injury while aboard his yacht, Michael was pleased with his decision to become a Marsh PCS client. “Twelve days after we bound coverage, we had an injury on board one of our yachts.

John Gaffney is Senior Vice President & Yacht Leader at Marsh Private Client Services.

The Marsh Private Client Services Yacht Practice can help you gain peace of mind knowing you have a specialized yacht insurance program in place and access to a 24/7 emergency claims hotline. For a complimentary risk analysis, contact John Gaffney at 954-765-5682 or john.j.gaffney@marsh.com.

With some 700 islands and uninhabited cays lying in a gentle east-west curve just 50 miles south of the U.S. coast of Florida, the cruising possibilities for The Bahamas archipelago can sound endless, but both nature and practicalities will help to narrow your choice. Each of the 16 main islands has its own distinct character, from New Providence island with cosmopolitan Nassau to the Exuma islands’ remote string of pearl-like cays, to the endlessly scalloped bays and coves of the Abacos. For those with the desire, and time, to prolong their cruise, extending a few days to encompass Harbour Island and Eleuthera is a must.

HARBOUR ISLAND With its pink sand beach and pretty pastel cottages, there is no pit stop chicer than the tiny Harbour Island off the northeast coast of Eleuthera. Three miles long and half a mile wide, the island has been a slow burner, only lazily coming of age in recent years due to the arrival of a handful of modish new places opening on the island. Stay @ For old-school glamour, it has to be the original Pink Sands Resort. It has been through some changes in recent years and is now under new management. The refurbished British Colonial beach cottages overlook the pink beach for which it is named; the restaurant Malcolm 51 ranks as one of the top dining spots on the island. Previously known as Pip’s Place, the recently refurbished Ocean View has a boho vibe and is also set in a fantastic location above the beach. Set in an old colonial home overlooking the harbor in the heart of Dunmore Town, The Landing, which is owned and run by Prince Charles’ goddaughter India Hicks, is a boutique property with just 13 guest rooms. Alternatively, The Landing’s sister property, the Guest House, is located right on the beach and boasts a private entrance to the sand where palm-fringed cabanas await. The palatial verandas are the perfect spot for sipping sundowners. Kitted out in owner India Hicks’s trademark blend of relaxed Bahamian and colonial styles, it is defiantly old-world but still elegantly modern.

The talk of the town is the recent addition to the small inventory of hotels: Bahamas House. A collection of colonial villas located in the center of Dunmore Town, the hotel’s concierge specializes in organizing “adventure chic” activities, including kite surfing and bonefishing. Shop @ Dunmore Town The two central streets on the island combine to create Dunmore Town. Here you will find the island’s shops, restaurants and cafes (a handful combined). For locally woven bags, head to Eva’s Straw Work; The Sand Dollar Shop is brimming with shells and local craftworks. For chic ceramics, head to Dake’s Shoppe. India Hicks’s designer boutique The Sugar Mill on Bay Street is a treasure trove of finds collected from around the world. Dine @ As chic as the island may be, there are no waiting or guest lists on Harbour Island — the island is too laid back for such things. For a leisurely lunch head to The Dunmore hotel overlooking the surf. Another casual option is Queen Conch. You will find an elegant crowd feasting on lobster at The Landing. Alternatively, Rock House has a fantastic atmosphere, fresh seafood, and live music. Sip Sip (the local word for gossip) is where superyacht owners and their guests congregate over a conch-chili soup. It is only open for lunch and gets packed to the rafters at peak times, so arrive early for a table on the deck.

Beyond the Reef and Daddy D’s are the places to head for reggae and hip-hop accompanied by a strong rum punch, and Gusty’s is great for late-night fun. Spend the day @ Man Island Cruise around the bays on Man Island where you can go swimming and see the indigenous turtles. Explore @ Take a golf cart, the island’s primary mode of transport, and slope around the island up Coconut Grove Avenue past the conch stall where fishermen stand patiently looking for bonefish. Discover the Stand-Up church, the Wesleyan Chapel, and the old Catholic cemetery. Alternatively, take the tender around the island, drift over fields of sea grass and discover turtles and orange starfish. EXUMAS The Exumas is the most popular yacht charter area in The Bahamas, but never seems crowded. The entire chain extends some 100 nautical miles and comprises 365 islands, islets and cays. Turquoise vistas are punctuated with vast stretches of white sand backed by colored clapboard houses ashore. Easily accessed from nearby Nassau, anchorages are anything from an hour to seven hours apart — so where you go really depends on the length of your charter, how many islands you want to visit and the speed of your yacht. Discover @ Conditions for snorkeling and diving are first-class in the Exumas (think 98-foot/30m visibility) and the beautiful reefs are abundant with marine life. A stone’s throw from Staniel Cay, Thunderball Cave is famed for its appearance in the James Bond movie “Thunderball.” Tides permitting, you can feed the fish as you swim and snorkel through the waters of this hollowed out island. Norman’s Cay was famous in the drug-running days and you can now visit its hidden runway and an old DC-3 airplane that was used for drug smuggling in the 1980s. It was shot down and today makes for an excellent dive and snorkel site. For the ultimate diving experience, Warderick Wells Cay is among the cluster of islands that make up the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. Often referred to as the Garden of Eden, this natural marine preserve is home to brilliant coral reefs and exotic marine life. Directly off Highbourne Cay is a drop off that faces the Exuma Sound — a vertical, 72-foot (22m) coral wall that is populated by all manner of sea life. Deep-sea fishing trips from wahoo, tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi also can be arranged either on board your yacht or with a local company. Dine @ Fans of seafood will be endlessly well cared for as most restaurants and shacks serve signature dishes of conch salad and grilled grouper or other locally caught fish. The bar and restaurant at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club is where the Exumas social scene converges. The catch of the day is really the catch of the day and the delicious cracked conch accompanied by a rum punch is the specialty. McDuffs at Norman’s Cay Beach Club is the perfect spot for curry conch chowder, a glorious sunset, and all manner of rum cocktails.

Shop @ Exuma shopping is generally limited to hotel boutiques, but for those looking for artisans and authentic Bahamian crafts, the Straw Market in George Town on Great Exuma has an eclectic array of stalls and is worth a visit. Explore @ A natural paradise, Compass Cay is made up of 450 acres with 15 beaches to explore. The most spectacular beach is the long Crescent Ocean Beach, where you can throw hot dogs to the nurse sharks that swim around the shallow waters and then dive in to swim with them. For more thrills, take a jet ski ride to the mangrove-edged archipelago known as Shroud Cay to catch high tide for the famous Mangrove Run.

Spend the day @ Rachel’s Bubble Bath A deep, crystal clear lagoon on the northwest of Compass Cay, Rachel’s Bubble Bath is one of the finest swimming holes in the Caribbean. At mid to high tide, ocean waves splash into the pool creating white foam: nature’s very own Jacuzzi. Anchor @ Staniel Cay Staniel Cay is a great anchorage where you will find not only the famous swimming pigs, but also the Thunderball Cave that starred in the James Bond movie Thunderball; and it is a great place to go snorkeling with stingrays. Nicholas Air provides private jet solutions to The Bahamas and the Caribbean. Contact an N&J charter broker for details.

01 The lush green grounds of the Belle Mead estate 02 Iconic white columns add to the grandiose beauty of the home’s front entrance

R E A L E S TAT E BELLE MEAD WORDS JANINE ST.DENIS

Nestled in the coveted estate section of Quogue, Southampton, New York, and perfectly perched on Shinnecock Road is the historical home dubbed Belle Mead. One of the last great works of the renowned architect Stanford White, the 31-room mansion located at 23 Shinnecock Road is certainly a sight to be seen.

The home was originally commissioned in 1906 by the Greeff family, which was renowned in the textile and fabric industries of the 18th and 19th centuries. The current owner bought the house in 2010 and set about restoring and renovating her to her former classic beauty.

This three-year project was more or less a revival of the home’s original opulence and grandeur, while keeping in time with modern functionality and today’s lifestyle needs. No expense was spared during the revitalization, which comprised the home itself, as well as the 3.4 acres it sits on, the incredible landscaping paying homage to the original charm of the property.

Ideally located close to Quogue’s quaint main street and within easy proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Belle Mead is situated quite perfectly. New York City also is conveniently close as is the Westhampton Beach Airport — only 10 minutes away. This airport is able to accommodate a jet of any size. A number of tennis and golf clubs also are close by, ensuring there is plenty for the owner and family to do off property. Back at Belle Mead, the three-story mansion also has a variety of amenities that will make you want to stay home. At 14,000 square feet, there’s plenty of space to roam. The home offers 10 bedrooms, each boasting its own unique design aesthetic, and eight-and-a-half baths. Six fireplaces can be found throughout. Belle Mead has a full basement and three garages. The formal sitting room, known as the Fountain Room, is striking and the library is an ideal place to enjoy a good book. A comfortable nautical-style cinema room makes family movie nights a breeze. A screened-in Rotunda overlooks the perfectly landscaped gardens. The large country-style kitchen offers a bold look as white cabinets are juxtaposed with dark wood floors and lime-green walls. Each of the 31 rooms is distinctive and comfortable with contemporary fixtures. Also on the property, an alfresco dining table situated in front of a brick fireplace is the perfect place for casual dining. The home’s Gunite pool is heated, allowing for use even in chillier temperatures. Belle Mead is a featured property in Martha Stewart’s iconic Weddings book. Between the historical esteem, the cultural references and the refined renovation, this home beautifully straddles the line between classic and modern.
