Castell Dinas Brân is a medieval castle occupying a prominent hilltop site above the town of Llangollen. However, despite its impressive location, it’s hard to imagine what these weather-beaten ruins once looked like. It is believed that Casell Dinas Brân had a short working life of around 17 years, from 1266 until 1277, but during that time the castle boasted a gatehouse, keep, hall, D-shaped tower and a large central courtyard which would have housed stables, storerooms, workshops and possibly even a chapel…

What will YOUR legacy be?

I realised that I wanted to help ensure that the Trust could continue to undertake its amazing work. Charles Cooke, as the engineer, designed and built the overhead transporter system for raw materials, so that they could be moved more easily around the hilly site, ensuring much less heavy lifting for the workforce. He also designed and built a tunnel to gain easier access from one side of the site to the other whilst still enabling the two locations to be kept separate for safety reasons. Many years later, when I was offered my very first job as an accounts clerk at the Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station, I was able to experience the combination of spectacular views and underlying danger for myself! As my working life progressed, I moved around the country working in general

My grandfather, Charles Francis Cooke, and his brother Ralph went into business together in 1922 when they bought the Ministry of Munitions’s explosives factory site in Penrhyndeudraeth – known today as North Wales Wildlife Trust’s Gwaith Powdwr Nature Reserve. He left a wellpaid engineering job in Norwich to jointly set up the business and both put their savings into the venture – during the first few years, whilst the business became established, my grandfather only took £1/week in pay. He lived next door to the factory and was on site every day of the week; occasionally taking my mother there too – the family would go on to own the business until 1958.

management in the NHS and then as Chief Executive of a health and social care charity. There, contract negotiation, grant applications and general fundraising were all part of my role, and I came to appreciate how valuable our supporters and donors were in enabling us to meet our objectives. Eventually, in 2007, my mother and I bought a property together in Llan Ffestiniog – which had once, in an odd coincidence, been owned by the Casson family that held the very first licence (in 1875) for an explosives factory in Penrhyndeudraeth. Soon afterreturning to the area, I attended a special artistic event that the Wildlife Trust put on at Gwaith Powdwr – an experience which was inspirational, thought-provoking and highly enjoyable. It was then that I realised what an important role the Trust was undertaking – not only in managing the environment on the site but in encouraging children and adults to use their imagination and to care about the wildlife and the land for future generations to experience. Thinking back on my working life, I realised that I wanted to help ensure that the Trust could continue to undertake its amazing work – without using too much of its own precious resources on trying to raise money from another source. With this in mind, when I recently made my Will, I wanted to include the Wildlife Trust as a beneficiary. After all, family fundraising for the local area is a fine tradition – in the late 1930s, my mother, Audrey, was the Carnival Queen in Penrhyndeudraeth and the council’s fundraising from the festivities was used to pay for a new playing field for the village, which she had the honour of opening and planted a tree there to commemorate the event! I know how all the work the Trust undertakes has to be supported financially – and how valuable a legacy could be when added to my existing membership. I also agreed to write this piece for the magazine you’re now reading in order to help explain why I decided that my own legacy should become part of my family’s legacy at Gwaith Powdwr – and, of course, to encourage you, too, to consider making your mark for wildlife in this way.

Steve Goodier crosses the ‘Gateway to Anglesey’ and discovers all that Menai Bridge has to offer…

There are three things that always spring to my mind when the town of Menai Bridge is mentioned. Obviously Thomas Telford’s iconic suspension bridge that first linked Anglesey with the Welsh mainland, a fishery in the hills above the town I was commissioned to write a feature on for an angling magazine many years ago, and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier I bought as a pup from a breeder in the area. I believe the fishery, Llyn Y Gors is still there and I remember my feature was called ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ – but sadly poor old Zeus (the ‘Staffie’) passed away about eight years ago. If you fancy something a little bit different however, then why not try a RibRide and see the beautiful coastline at high speed? PLAS NEWYDD HOUSE AND GARDEN Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th Century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association and contains his exquisite romantic mural and the largest exhibition of his works. This National Trust house is currently closed but the stunning gardens are still open to visit. HAVE A POTTER AROUND TOWN Menai Bridge has a selection of interesting shops, including antiques, books and fashion. There is also a good collection of pubs and restaurants catering for all tastes, including fresh local seafood. CHURCH ISLAND AND THE CHURCH OF ST. TYSILIO Church Island is in the Menai Strait and is reached via a causeway from The Belgium Promenade in Menai Bridge. The Welsh name for the island is Ynys Tysilio (The Island of Tysilio). St Tysilio was a Welsh Saint who reputedly established the Church on this small island and went on to live the life of a hermit here. The whole island and the Church are well worth a visit and a walk around the graveyard is interesting. The highest point also gives stunning views of both Menai Bridge and Britannia Bridge. PLAS CADNANT HIDDEN GARDENS Plas Cadnant hidden gardens covers around 200 acres and is described as ‘one of North Wales best kept secrets’ – it is certainly a ‘must see attraction’ on any visit to Menai Bridge. Since 1996 restoration work has taken place and the gardens restored to their former glory. Situated at the side of The Menai Strait, the gardens are hidden from view but are close to Menai Bridge and a day out here is a great way to spend time in the area. During February the gardens and tea room are open on Sundays and Wednesdays from 12 to 4pm.

for comfort. As the darkness descends in the afternoon, or in the morning when I’m scraping the ice from the van windscreen with the edges of a cassette case (still the best tried-and-tested method), I often imagine myself in the wilds of Scandinavia, where this kind of icy weather makes some kind of poetic sense. One way to get there, figuratively at least, is by turning to Rachel Khoo’s excellent ‘Little Swedish Kitchen’ cook book. Whilst wearing an obligatory chunky white polo-necked jumper, I tried to make one of her recipes but couldn’t get my hands on about a third of the ingredients. This bit of Scandi/Welsh compromise went down very well nonetheless.

New Year, new us… Hello readers, friends of TGTG. We headed into the New Year full of vim and vigour, and Tim had the desire to make some changes. Law firm here to help businesses Whatever life may throw at you or your business, the legal experts at a North Wales law firm say they are here to help. Managing partner at Lanyon Bowdler, Brian Evans (pictured), says the pandemic has presented huge challenges for businesses – and they have risen to the occasion. “Have we ever lived through such uncertain times as the past two years? With ever-changing rules and restrictions, businesses have had to show resilience and a willingness to adapt like never before,” he commented. “I am proud of the way our lawyers have risen to the challenge and continued to support clients through these difficult times. Looking back at the past year, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we have been very busy across all departments and offices, particularly in North Wales - whether assisting with residential property sales, helping businesses with employment law issues, or enabling people to get their affairs in order by writing a Will. Like all businesses, we can only hope this year brings more stability and we can look forward to brighter days ahead – but whatever happens, you can rest assured that we will be here to help with any legal issues that may come your way.”

MAGAZINE

IN THE

STARS...

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

February’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) Prioritise and take time to reflect. You’ve reached a point in life where you need to decide about certain relationships and situations. If other people’s demands and expectations of your behaviour are too high, don’t be afraid to set boundaries. A little reflection at the beginning of each month can help you see what in your life is not serving you and which relationships work for you.

LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) You may have struggled with making big decisions in the past so February could be an overwhelming month. The more you think it through, the more confusing you’ll become. Retire. Clear your mind. You won’t make the right decision if your mind is running at high speed all the time. An intimate relationship can lead to confusion. A person you love may expect too much.

TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) It’s now that you have the power to take control of your life. You’ve made commitments that were too big for you and you find it difficult to say no. You feel trapped in either your career or in a relationship. Now you’re looking at the value of friendships. Too many people have had too big an impact on your life, so it is important to establish boundaries.

SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) Talking to family members can help you relieve any anxiety. It is a time of big changes. This makes it easy to be both excited and nervous. February is a powerful period for healing family wounds. The challenges you face in your own home could help you learn valuable lessons. There may be many opinions between you and your partner on an issue of morality, education or medical.

GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) Clear the air before February begins. Take this opportunity to be kind and generous with colleagues and friends who have been in conflict. Strange events are taking place now. While these might seem alarming, it could be just what you need to get rid of stagnant energy at your home and workplace. You’re starting to seriously consider the value of some friendships.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) You might find yourself in a difficult position as the month begins. Although you are likely to prefer your own solutions, there is one situation where you might benefit from the advice of another person. You might feel obligated to fulfil some obligations for a family member or partner. This may be an inconvenience for them but they will not be able to do it alone.

CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) When you think about all you’ve gone through, all the accomplishments you’ve achieved and all the times you’ve had to overcome, you should be so proud. There are still people who believe that they can impact you. It’s time to take initiative and change the direction of your life. Take responsibility for your own life. Be more assertive in your relationships.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) As the month begins, it seems like your sensitivity levels have gone on overload. Don’t believe every word you hear. Avoid drama, in particular the drama of others. If you’re having difficulty coping emotionally, get support from a friend. Romance is not about pretending you don’t feel affected by your best friend’s or partner’s actions.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) You’re ready to have some good times as February begins. You’ve been working hard. Your responsibilities have been taken seriously. Now is the time for your inner child. Your days should be filled with activities that you find enjoyable and enjoy. You need some time for yourself. You’re worthy of this. If you are more involved in pleasure, your relationship will benefit.

AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) It can feel like your life has been on an emotional rollercoaster. As you get over this, you will be able to open new doors. It’s time for you and your partner to let it go. Old situations, ties, people or habits. New things are waiting for them. If a relationship feels stale, boring or uninteresting, but you keep holding on to it because it feels familiar, then you are trading your happiness for security.

VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) It’s possible to achieve the goals that you have been working towards. Your hard work will begin paying off in many ways. It’s about more than the money. It’s all in the passion, the energy, the effort and the hard work that you put into building a foundation for your life. Romance is the best way to express your love and appreciation to your partner.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) You will set goals for the month and be focused on what you want to do. You’re making good progress and the more you learn the skills you need to succeed, the more confidence you will have. Romance is about you feeling more confident and independent with your partner. You don’t need the other’s approval to pursue the things you want.
