2013 is now well underway and, thankfully, we have been blessed with some decent weather, a continuation of the conditions experienced preChristmas when the retail sector experienced its best period in years. The good spell made it possible for people of all ages to shop and take part in the seasonal activities.

It is also good to see that our Government has reverted to reality and reversed its controversial decision to cut spending this year on personal security alarms for older people. This was another example of some crazy thinking at civil service level that would have saved the exchequer just over one million euro in any case.

The u-turn was hinted at when Taoiseach Enda Kenny told RTÉ's This Week programme earlier in the month that every person over the age of 65 was still eligible for personal alarms. The decision also contradicted an earlier statement by the Department of the Environment. It had said that eligibility for the Seniors Alarm Scheme was being restricted to older people living alone. However, whatever squabbles may be taking place between politicians on the issue the decision to maintain government spending on the scheme at last year’s level of €2.45 has been welcomed by organizations representing older people.

Indeed, any decision to reduce aid to vulnerable elderly people would be nothing short of lunacy in the current environment where more and more helpless people living alone are being subjected to attacks by unscrupulous. It is pitiful to see such people fighting to retain the few euro they have to live on as thugs rifle through their meagre possessions. In spite of explanations by the government concerning justification for cut-backs on the grounds of efficiency, etc., the removal of so many local garda stations is doing little to reassure such people that the Gardai or the department have their interests at heart, particularly when the incidences of such crime is on the increase.

The HSE’s Service Plan for 2013 does not make for happy reading either with the admission that many older people may face lengthy periods on a waiting list for a nursing home bed, under the “Fair Deal” Scheme. While the budget provision is actually increased the Scheme plans to have 850 fewer beds available. Age Action are concerned that many of those in urgent need of such accommodation will now have to wait until somebody vacates a nursing home bed before they can get the care they need.

In this first issue of 2013 we deal with some of these issues. We also speak to a man who surely must be an example to anybody who strives to maintain a healthy lifestyle while in his eighties – wellknown Mayo doctor and high-profile GAA official, Dr. Mick Loftus. At 83 Mick still walks/runs over three miles a day and is in tip-top condition. His professional and sporting life spans over six decades and should make for compelling reading for many of his contemporaries. We look at some of the top countries to visit in 2013 and we provide some timely “decluttering” advice as part of house and home feature. We look at the contribution Castlebar’s Maire Kelly has made to the world of hairdressing and to community life in Castlebar. We also include some other interesting features.

So, at Mature Living we look forward to providing you with many articles, interviews, competitions and up-to-date information over the coming twelve months. We are also planning to hold another Mature Living Exhibition in late Spring – something for everybody to look forward to . . . more about this in our February edition. Age Action urges older people to take steps to remain safe in their homes during cold weather Age Action has urged older people to take the necessary steps to protect themselves from the cold, in the wake of the tragic deaths of two older people from hypothermia.

“THE cold can kill and does kill in Ireland and older people must make themselves aware of the practical steps which they can take to remain well and warm in their homes during cold weather,” Age Action spokesman Eamon Timmins said.

The older people’s charity extended its condolences to the family and friends of John Glennon (67) and Debbie McEvoy (63) who were found dead at Drumalee Court in Dublin yesterday. Post mortems found the causes of their deaths to be hypothermia and ongoing health problems.

Age Action is urging communities to keep in regular contact with their older neighbours and friends

to ensure they have enough fuel and supplies, especially on frosty days when it may be unsafe to go out.

Older people can also play a role in ensuring they remain well and warm in their homes. Maintaining a comfortable temperature in the rooms they are living in is essential at this time of year. It should be about 21 degrees Celsius in the room they are living in and 18 degrees in other rooms. “If you are struggling to afford to heat your home, concentrate on heating your bedroom and the other rooms you live in,” Mr Timmins said.

“The temperature in your home is crucial,” Mr Timmins said. “Medical

research has found that when temperatures fall below 16 degrees Celsius there is an increased risk of respiratory problems. Where it drops below 12 degrees, the blood thickens and there is an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.”

“The cold can kill,” Mr Timmins said. “Between 1,500 and 2,000 excess deaths occur during the winter in Ireland, compared to the summer. Many of these are older people who die as a result of respiratory illness or cardiovascular disease. The cold weather, inadequate heating, low incomes and poorly insulated homes are contributory factors in some of these deaths.”

In order to stay well and warm this winter older people should also take the following steps: Dress correctly – wear layers, rather than one thick layer of clothing. Maybe wear a woollen or fleece hat in bed; Remain active – don’t stay sitting for long periods. Spread your chores throughout the day to ensure to keep moving around your home; Eat well – have at least one hot meal a day. Sip hot drinks regularly.

Keep a flask of hot drink by the bed, in case you wake up cold; Make sure you use your free electricity or gas units, if you receive the Household Benefits package; Seal gaps around windows and doors. Insulate your home; Remain in telephone contact with your family and friends, including other older people.

HSE's 2013 plan accepts waiting lists for nursing home beds “likely” AGE Action is concerned that frail and vulnerable older people may face lengthy periods on a waiting list for a nursing home bed this year, following the publication of the HSE’s Service Plan for 2013 which states that such waiting lists will be “likely”.

The HSE’s budget for 2013 includes a €998 million provision for beds under the Nursing Home Support Scheme (the so-called “Fair Deal”), and aims to provide 22,761 beds. While the funding for 2013 is marginally greater than last year (€994 million), it aims to provide 850 fewer beds under the scheme this year.

“We are concerned that the plan acknowledges that it is likely that waiting lists for nursing homes will apply for budgetary reasons this year,” Age Action spokesman Eamon Timmins said. “In layman’s terms

this may mean that older people who are sick, frail and no longer able to live at home, will be left waiting for somebody to vacate a nursing home bed before they can receive the care they need.” The older people’s charity is concerned that many of these older people will spend this waiting period in an acute hospital bed at a far greater weekly cost to the State.

Age Action believes that in the light of this plan the plight of older people in the community will become more difficult during 2013.

The HSE Service Plan aims to provide 10.3 million hours of home help during the year – 400,000 hours less than was targeted in the 2012 plan. Overall, funding for older people’s services is down €11m (2.6%) on 2012. The scale of hardship this will cause on the ground will depend on how these

cuts are implemented. The plan does not provide details as to which services will be cut or how the savings will be achieved.

Age Action welcomes that the HSE is aiming to maintain the number people who receive home care packages at 10,870, although with growing need for these packages this level may not be sufficient.

Q8 Oils Cavan Older People “Living in Fear” due to Garda Cuts – Active Retirement Ireland Farm Machinery

lder people are living in fear of being attacked in their own homes due to reduced policing presence in their communities, that’s according to Active Retirement Ireland (ARI), the representative organisation for over 550 local Active Retirement Associations nationwide.

Speaking in the wake of a home invasion in which a 78 year-old woman was assaulted and robbed in Pettigo, Co. Donegal, Maureen Kavanagh, ARI’s Chief Executive, said that members of the organisation were more apprehensive than ever before.

“It’s a desperate situation for many of our members, especially those living alone,” Ms. Kavanagh said, “There are fewer Gardaí on our streets due to station closures and cutbacks, and older people are reduced to living in fear of being targeted by criminals.

“Violent home invasions are unfortunately becoming more common, and when a 96 year-old woman was brutally assaulted in Buncrana last month, we received several phone

calls from concerned members all over the country.”

The concern and apprehension felt by older people isn’t limited to rural areas such as the Northwest, says Ms. Kavanagh. “In urban areas, even those unaffected by station closures, there are still fewer Gardaí on the beat and this makes older people quite frightful of criminal elements of society who seem to act with impunity.”

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses in both recent burglary and assault cases, but Ms. Kavanagh believes that more must be done by the government to allay the fears of older people. “We saw with the recent cuts to the Seniors Alert Scheme that bottom line figures are being prioritised ahead of people’s welfare.

It’s a positive move that those cuts were reversed, but with 100 Garda stations to be closed this month, and fewer and fewer Gardaí present in communities, the government must take steps to allay the fears of older people in all corners of the country.”

Marriage ups middle-age survival Middle-aged people are more likely to suffer premature death if they do not have a significant other, a new study suggests.

According to US scientists, in modern society, the survival of middle-aged people is expected, therefore understanding who is at risk of not reaching an older age is important.

They looked at the link between marriage and the risk of premature death in over 4,800 people who were born in the 1940s.

They found that having a spouse or

permanent partner when middle-aged reduced the risk of a premature death.

In fact, middle-aged people who had never married were at least twice as likely to die prematurely compared to people who had been in a stable marriage throughout their adult life.

Being single increased the risk of a premature death in middle age. This included people who had lost their partners and had not gone on to establish a relationship with someone else.

The results stood even when other factors, such as personality and risky

health behaviours, were taken into account.

The scientists said that the findings indicate that these relationships ‘appear to provide different levels of emotional and functional social support, which has been shown to be related to mortality'.

They concluded that ‘social ties during midlife are important to help us understand premature mortality'.

Details of these findings are published in the journal, Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

HSE service plan generates more questions Spectacular Valentines than answers for older people Festival for

There is a disturbing lack of detail in the HSE Service Plan 2013 published today. Ms. Patricia Conboy, Director of Older & Bolder said: “There are more questions than answers for older people arising from this new Plan. It announces a cut of 2.6% to the budget for older people, the biggest reduction in funding for any single care group in 2013. Worryingly, the plan provides no detail about

how this cut is going to be implemented.” She continued: “The Budget for older people in 2013 will be €392 million, down from €403 million in 2012 and €407 million in 2011.

Older people will be concerned about where the axe is going to fall and which services will be affected.”

Originally, the HSE set itself a target of providing 10.7 million home help hours in 2012. Now the HSE is saying that, due to ‘a technical adjustment’, the target should have been 10.3 million home help hours and the commitment now is to de-

liver that same number of hours (10.3m) in 2013. What we need is some forensic detail on ‘the technical adjustment’ and why the lost 400,000 hours should not form part of a service target in 2013”.

Ms. Conboy concluded: “Over the course of two budgetary years, we have gone from 11.9 million hours of home help in 2011 to 10.3 million in 2013. This reduction will hurt older people suffering disability, frailty and life limiting illnesses, as well as children and people with disabilities”.

R. MICK LOFTUS is certainly one of the best known GAA people in the West of Ireland, if not in the entire country. The genial Crossmolina-based doctor, who turned 83 last August, is widely-respected for his honest and forthright views on many matters,

particularly in relation to the GAA and sponsorship from the drinks industry.

However, as we learned, nothing surpasses his enthusiasm and passion for sport, particularly Gaelic games, and his encouragement for youth to exercise and maintain healthy minds and bodies.

He is fit, energetic, with a lucid mind and a perfect memory. He admits he is not into diets, but walks/runs at least three miles every day – on Enniscrone beach or around Gortnor Abbey. As a consequence he sleeps well and can face each day with enthusiasm.

He still works full-time in his medical practice in Crossmolina. Rising time is 7.15 each morning after which he engages in daily prayer, takes a cup of tea, some orange juice and listens to the news. He goes to his surgery at 8.45 to prepare for the day and then attends daily Mass. His faith is an important part of his life, though he is quick to point out that these are private matters and he would never try to influence others when it comes to spiritual beliefs.

His morning surgery time is 10.00 to 1 p.m., after which he breaks for lunch, reads the papers, relaxes and returns for the afternoon shift from 3 to 5.30. After a cuppa and digesting the news of the day on radio or TV he dons his gear and heads for his run/walk which lasts at least an hour. When he returns he reads a bit before retiring for the evening. In his practice since 1957, the indefatigable Dr. Mickey has no intention of retiring.

Mick and his wife, Edie, live close to Crossmolina town. He has four children – Michael (in grocery/supermarket business, Crossmolina), Patrick (airline pilot based in San Francisco), Joseph (a

GP in Roscommon) and Orla (married and living in Ballyhaunis). He has 10 grandchildren and admits he loves to be with them as they are a close-knit family. His daughter-in-law, Eleanor (Coronor for Mayo) works in the practice at the Deel Medical Centre.

His interest in administration in the GAA really began with his own club, Deel Rovers, Crossmolina and his role in the development of St. Tiernan’s Park with his colleague, the late Tiernan Reilly, in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

The club soon had teams in all divisions and they reached the pinnacle when they captured the All-Ireland Club Championship in 2001. He was chairman of the club for 20 years.

His emergence as a player, however, was much earlier, back in 1947, when he played on the Mayo minor team which lost to Tyrone in the All-Ireland after leading by 11 points at half-time. He recalls it as the year the All-Ireland senior final between Cavan and Kerry was played in New York. There was a sixhour delay between the minor and senior, and he listened to Michael O’Hehir’s commentary on the match in an ice cream parlour in Dublin. How times have changed.

He captained the Mayo team which won the All-Ireland junior title in 1957 (having also played on the team which captured the title in 1950). This was the game that saw the return of the great Josie Munnelly at full-forward after an absence of 20 years.

Another ’51 stalwart, John McAndrew (who, sadly, passed away recently) also lined out for the Green and Red that day.

In those days players were eligible for junior football when out of the senior ranks for two years. Mick had also been on the panel of the great ’51 team which meant he had the distinction of appearing with Mayo teams in the three grades at All-Ireland level at Croke Park.

He was later to officiate as a referee at all three levels in Croke Park as well.

In the ‘sixties Mick was, perhaps, one of the best known referees in the country and took charge of two AllIrelands – Galway v Kerry in 1965, during which he sent three players to the line, and Down v Kerry in 1968. He was in New York on holiday when he got the call to referee a minor All-Ireland in 1964. Such was his enthusiasm, he returned to take charge of the whistle for the encounter and had a taxi waiting for him outside Croke Park to bring him back to the airport to resume his holiday in the U.S. His transition to the administrative side of the GAA at a higher level was influenced by the late Johnny Mulvey who prompted him to go for election to the Connacht Council. Dr. Mick was elected President of the GAA in 1984 at a Congress held in Ballina. He succeeded Paddy Buggy and was President from 1985 to 1988. He has been credited –

along with the then Director-General, Liam Mulvihill – as having been responsible for sowing the seeds for the major developments which took place in Croke Park. He was part of a delegation from the GAA which visited stadia in New York and London back in the ‘80s. During his term as president he visited clubs in every county. It was just after centenary year (1984) and he took a keen interest in club development and the promotion of hurling. He also focussed on coaching and the improvement of refereeing standards.

While Mick has been extremely vocal since the late ‘90s and early’00s about his strong objection to sponsorship of sport by drinks companies, he has no problem with alcohol per se. He was reared in a pub and has no issue with people enjoying a drink. However, during his period as coroner in Mayo he experienced first-hand the ill-effects of drink abuse. He observed the destruction of lives and families. In his opinion, 50% of suicides are alcohol-related. It is even more potent and addictive than cannabis and he has major issues about the way it’s promoted. Consequently, Dr. Mick boycotted the Guinness-sponsored AllIreland hurling final for 15 years, before finally returning to the stands in 2012.

the US), as it is elsewhere, particularly in the world of sport. He instanced the Heinekan Cup. He was a leading light in the Dothain organisation for 20 years and only recently some people have contacted him to reignite the issues again. In 2013 he is still unflinching in his views on drink abuse and may resume his crusade again in the near future.

When I asked him about the surge in suicides in recent times he struggled a bit to come up with an answer. He felt people were under enormous pressure.

He strongly advised young people to get involved in sport, exercise, drama . . . any form of recreation, to maintain a closeness with parents and, above all, to keep lines of communication open.

The genial doctor is not a reader of books, but reads newspapers and medical journals – to keep abreast of changes and developments in the medical field. He loves all kind of music, particularly artistes from his own era – Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, American Country and enjoys Ceili House on Saturday nights. He particularly mentioned artistes and songs like Louis Armstrong’s “Wonderful World”, Al Jolson and “April Flowers”, and Ken Dodd’s “Tears for souvenirs”. On the Irish front, Paddy Reilly’s “Fields of Athenry” is a particular favourite, and he enjoys Colm Wilkinson’s (whose mother hails from Crossmolina) “Bring Him Home”.

Returning to football, when asked about Mayo’s performance in 2012 he commented that James Horan and his team deserved credit for the commitment and training. However, one swallow didn’t make a Summer. With club football at such a high level within the county he couldn’t understand why Mayo hadn’t enjoyed success at AllIreland level since 1951. In contrast, how is it that Kerry can come back year after year? People in Kerry talk Gaelic football from the day they are born. Like so many others who have walked the same path, Dr. Mick believes the GAA is a truly wonderful organisation. Back in 2001, in an interview he said: “When you see how people make lifetime friends from being involved in the GAA and the great camaraderie that develops between them, it shows just how fellas can get all wound up in connection with their own team, give each other a torrid time at matches, but end up as friends for life...”

He has high hopes for the future.

Maybe the problems of the present time present an opportunity for us to look at ourselves . . . give us time to think. It is

certainly sad to see people leaving our shores, and contributing to other countries, to see clubs losing players.

The government is doing its best and all of us who remain will have to do with less until our country gets back on its feet. It will take a few years, but recovery WILL take place.

To his friends and neighbours in Crossmolina Mick Loftus has for so many years been the kind and friendly family doctor. Nationwide, in GAA circles, he has been identified with everything that is positive and uplifting about the country’s biggest sporting organisation.

At the age of 83 he strongly espouses the positive health benefits of exercise and, in the same sentence, the negative effect of alcohol abuse. “Ironically, if everybody took my advice I would be out of work much of the time, but we would all be in a better place”, he concluded.

The cause of stretch marks Stretch Marks are long, thin streaks or lines that develop on the surface of the Skin and are a form of Scarring. Stretch Marks are very common and can affect both men and women. Stretch Marks cannot be prevented but there are a few tips that can be followed in order to try to reduce the risk of developing them.

What causes of Stretch Marks?

Stretch Marks occur when the skin is stretched extensively over a short period of time. The rapid stretching causes the Dermis (Middle Layer of Skin) to break in places allowing the Deeper Skin Layers to show through forming Stretch Marks.

The Dermis is made up of strong, interconnected Fibres that enable your Skin to stretch as your body grows.

If part of your body such as your Abdomen grows rapidly over a short period, the Fibres can become thin and over stretched and some may break.

At the point where the Skin Fibres break, tiny tears develop which allow the Blood Vessels below to show through. This is why Stretch Marks are often red or purple when they first appear.

When the Blood Vessels eventually contract (shrink), the pale coloured fat underneath your Skin will be visible and your Stretch Marks will change to a silvery white colour.

The Dermis can be stretched: • during Pregnancy • as a result of Weight Gain • during Puberty • Family History of Stretch Marks

Pregnancy Stretch Marks are common during the later stages of Pregnancy and can affect up to 80% of Pregnant Women. An unusual way to choose a dental practice……….

C

hoosing a dental practice should I feel be based on a number of factors: the quality of the relationship you feel you have with the dentist and their team, trust and confidence, their level of skill and experience, etc etc etc.

But I have a measure which I use to guide me in my preference for all types of businesses, from restaurants to supermarkets.

I admit it, I have a secret toilet obsession.

But it isn't anything gross (not that I haven't seen some gross ones, I may add!)

When I use a new restaurant, shop,hair dresser, tourist destination..... a trip to the toilet perhaps means more to me than most. I may enjoy the food, adore the clothes, swoon over the interior; but for me the toilet is the most important bit.

It's the deal breaker. It's the thing that turns my giddy enthusiasm for new, shiny things from a 'That place is great, but I wish they had....' to a 'Wow. They just have IT.' It all started with a man called Paddi

Lund. I know it is something many of us have always felt deep down, but Paddi Lund made it clear for me. When I read his book 'The Critical Non-Essentials' my perspective entirely changed.

Since that day I can now verbalise that for me a toilet in a place of business should reflect the ethos and standards of that business.

I don't mean disco lights and feather trimmed lampshades (although in the right place those could be fantastic!). I mean pleasant, comfortable, clean, thoughtful...

I feel so devastated when I go somewhere lovely, and then I go to the toilets and my heart sinks. When the thought of propping my 5 year on the toilet seat makes me wince, and my only other thoughts are how I can get out of there without her hands touching a single surface. It automatically makes me wonder what else they have missed.

Because for me hygiene is crucial, especially in a food or medical environment. And I judge their respect for me as a customer on the cleanliness of

the bathroom they expect me to use.

And that brings me to dentistry.

A few months ago our Reception Manager, Stephanie, told me a story. She told me she was speaking to one of our clients in a social gathering one evening recently. The conversation turned to teeth, and the client turned to another lady and said, 'Stephanie works in a lovely dental practice.' Stephanie was of course happy that this was her feeling, and then the conversation continued with, 'And I was speaking to someone recently who told me how lovely their bathroom is. I haven't needed to use their bathroom yet, but I will make sure I do the next time I am there.'

I thought 'WOW'. That's it! That’s a great thing for our team to hear. Because they work hard, they genuinely care about our patients, and their heart is in their work. And after all these years of checking the bathroom continually throughout each day, washing and drying individual hand cloths, making sure the handwash and handcream is always full etc. etc., people are in their own time mentioning our toilets as being

remarkable i.e. worth remarking on. Well done team! My heart sang, because it confirmed what I already felt. When you care enough to make every part of the business good enough for your clients they feel it, and they will know that if we care enough to make even the toilets clean and welcoming, we will do our very best in the treatment we carry out for them as well. We do our best to do things as well as is humanly possible. We strive every day to do the best we can. And maybe our bathroom could benefit from a feather trimmed lampshade and some disco lights, but it is clean, it has some nice thoughtful touches, and we hope an emphasis like this on the small details shows we care.

And anyway, one day I am going to build the Taj Mahal of toilets. I have the blue prints close at hand here somewhere. I just have to have a word with James about the budget.........................

i folks!! It's our first feature in Mature Living magazine of 2013. Since last March, we have been writing articles covering all things fitness! Throughout the past 9 months we have examined many aspects of fitness and exercise. Our articles have covered the benefits of exercise - both physical and psychological; the best ways to maximize your time spent exercising, little tips to extract the best results from your efforts as possible, the reasons to exercise and how they relate to us as we age, and much more. For this instalment we will once again outline the major benefits of leading an active and healthy lifestyle!

Some of the physical benefits of keeping active are obvious, some less so. The ones most of us know are that it helps you stay slim, reduces cholesterol, decreases your chances diseases such as diabetes,

heart disease, strokes etc.

There are many more, though, that may not have occurred to you. Keeping active helps you sleep - exercising maintains a healthy balance of chemicals in the brain and body that help you relax during your "down time". Exercise helps to keep you strong, balanced and with good posture and coordination as you grow older. Exercise can also, believe it or not, give you more energy!! Rather than feeling tired and worn out after a light workout, many people report that they feel invigorated and vibrant!

Another little known benefit (although it is becoming more publicised) of regular exercise is the psychological effects it triggers. Exercise has long been

known to lift mood and spirit among participants but it is only recently that studies have been conducted to measure these effects. In studies among people suffering with depression, one group was given anti-depressant medication and another was just told to exercise for 20 minutes every day. The findings were staggering. Both groups responded equally, with the "exercise" group reporting that they felt more confident, comfortable and generally in better spirits. The testers concluded that regular exercise can be as effective, if not more effective, than medication in treating depression! These findings have been replicated in numerous similar studies. Of course you do not have to be

depressed to experience these benefits. The point is that exercise makes you happier, increases your quality of life and generally improves your outlook on your surroundings.

Try it - A healthy world is a happy world!

Consumers Fail To Make Connection Between Poor Sleep And Old Beds

he Sleep Council has launched its new consumer campaign, which is focused on mattress deterioration and the importance of regular bed replacement.

Called 'Toxic Sleep', the campaign story homes in on the link between poor sleep and old beds.

Having commissioned FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) testing on old and new mattresses and a consumer survey exploring the public's bed buying and sleep habits, The Sleep Council believes that it now has evidence to support the argument for seven-year mattress replacement – as opposed to eight to ten years, which has been the accepted norm for the past 10 -15 years. Despite more than 50% of respondents to a consumer survey carried out on behalf of The Sleep Council saying they thought a bed should last between up to 12 years and over 20 years, the FIRA tests demonstrated that beds as little as six years old could offer significantly less support and comfort than a new one.

The survey suggests that people are simply not making the connection between a poor night's sleep - or 'toxic sleep' - and the state of their bed. Four fifths of those questioned regularly experience interrupted sleep or always wake up tired; while 47% achieve just six hours sleep or less a night; and 67% said they wake up with back or neck ache: a classic symptom of a bed that no long offers the right level of support. Yet incredibly, nearly nine out of 10 people said they were reasonably or very happy with the comfort of their bed.

"People simply do not seem to make the connection between lack of sleep and the state of their bed," said Professor Chris Idzikowski of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service and Edinburgh Sleep Centre. "It is surprising to find that 67% of the sample were waking up with

neck or back pain and not connecting their poor sleep with their, presumably old, bed."

"An even higher proportion are reporting disturbed, interrupted or 'toxic sleep' – that is, sleep that leaves you still feeling tired in the morning."

Said Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council: "As well as reporting a lack of sleep and waking up with neck or back-ache, our survey also found more than a quarter of us would be embarrassed for other people to see the state of our mattresses and one in six couples experience roll-together which is caused by a dip in the bed. What they are reporting are the classic symptoms of worn out or unsuitable beds."

Said Phil Reynolds, senior manager, technical services at FIRA who conducted the testing: "When we disassembled the used mattresses, all of them showed a loss of height and although it was not possible to see any dust mites or allergen as these are not visible to the naked eye, a covering of dust, skin cells and fibre on the back of one insulator was clearly visible." The mattresses were also tested for dust mites and, more importantly, their allergen. Just two micrograms per gram (mcg/g) of dust mite allergen can cause hypersensitivity in asthma sufferers, while ten mcg/g can pose a serious health risk. According to the Medical Entomology Centre, Cambridge, around one in five aged mattresses can contain between two and 10mcg/g of the dust mite allergen and one in 20 has above 10mcg/g.

"Four out of five people in our survey said they were not getting a good night's sleep and it is our belief that the problem for a large proportion of them is that they are sleeping on unsuitable or worn out beds."

According to the FIRA, a bed may have deteriorated by as much as 70% from its 'as new' state after 10 years.

Nuts contain brain healthy oils which can be included in your diet. But if you prefer walnuts over almonds or pistachios over cashews, that’s fine.

Fish is another brain food. It has omega-3 fatty acids which are essential in brain functioning. Sardines, salmon or pickerel? Makes no difference, go with what you like.

As for protein, chicken and other poultry are a healthy choice. Red meat should be eaten only periodically because it is high in saturated fats.

The Bands of our Showband Era

here were hundreds of them. Irish bands of every size, description and musical genre travelling the roads and borheens of Ireland. They travelled the length and breadth of the country from the 1950's through the mid 1980's. Although "officially" the term showband was coined in the late fifties and was used to describe bands that played a wide variety of music and usually included a "show" during the night, the term was gradually applied to all the bands that played in the 1960's. As the

Irish music scene splintered in the late sixties into pop, country bands, the term was dropped but we still find it the best overall description of the bands of the "ballroom" era. In the early days, they travelled in whatever they could find...bread vans, hearses, and even cars (roof racks and all). In later years, many (if not most) of them travelled in converted Ford Transit vans (like the one pictured right) that were normally used for delivery services.

After a couple of windows were popped into the centre panels, a

row or two of old airplane seats were installed and the band was ready to travel "in style." Although style was a matter of opinion...if you're stuck in the back of a van on a cold and rainy winter's night, it may seem like "a long way to Tipperary," but it's even further to Castletownbere, Co. Cork!

It will be impossible to list all the bands that played the dance halls, ballrooms, marquees, parochial halls, community centres, hotels, and town halls across Ireland but each month we are

hen you find a formula that works, it usually worth repeating. So it was a year after the Cotton Mill Boys took the dance scene by storm, that the Tom Costello organization launched another country outfit, the Hoot'nanny's. The first hint of the band's formation came in the January 29th issue of Spotlight which reported that the new band was in rehearsals already.

At the same time, Bernie Boyle, a cousin of Margo's from Burtonport, Co. Donegal had been working in England. Fellow Donegal man Hughie Ward had contacted him telling him another new band, the Virginians, were looking for a singer. Bernie came home and auditioned for the band, but did not get the job. Ready to return to England, he was approached by the Hoot'nanny's and took the stage name, Bill Ryan.

Originally fronted by Bill, the band's career would parallel that of their stable mates, the Cottons. In fact, they would end up being fronted by Mike Scott, who started with the Cottons. A couple of weeks later, in the March 6th issue, the band was officially launched.

The article said that the band had been formed around the nucleus of the former Greener Pastures band which included: Mick O'Malley (guitar), Stan McKee (guitar), Frank McGirr (bass) and Ollie Cunningham (drums).

In November, 1970, Pat Hamill joined the band on vocals and guitar. Pat had previously been with the Beverlies, although a story in Spotlight stated he was discovered by the band's road manager, Pat Murphy, singing in a pub in Draperstown. In February, 1971, an issue of Spotlight reported that Stan McKee had left the Hoots to join Frankie Carroll's band, the Ranchers.

When Bill Ryan left to front his own band, Buckshot, the band found a replacement in "Wee Mick" (real name Mick Murray and so called because he stood a reported 4'5" tall).

He joined the band in September, 1971 (as reported in Spotlight) and as well as singing, he was a farmer in Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh before joining the showband ranks.

In today's politically correct world, it is doubtful punters would have stood for it, but

planning to feature a band from the west with the help of Gerry Gallagher and www.irish-showbands.com . Apart from a few who enjoy near mythical status (such as the Royal Showband and a handful of others), most bands came together, played for a few years and then either reinvented themselves, changed their name, or just disappeared, their members either returning to civilian life, or scattering to two or three new bands.

George Hilliard was now managing the band and we're not sure how much longer they lasted.

Pat had previously been with the Beverlies, although a story in Spotlight stated he was discovered by the band's road manager, Pat Murphy, singing in a pub in Draperstown. In February, 1971, an issue of Spotlight reported that Stan McKee had left the Hoots to join Frankie Carroll's band, the Ranchers.

When Bill Ryan left to front his own band, Buckshot, the band found a replacement in "Wee Mick" (real name Mick Murray and so called because he stood a reported 4'5" tall).

He joined the band in September, 1971 (as reported in Spotlight) and as well as singing, he was a farmer in Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh before joining the showband ranks.

In today's politically correct world, it is doubtful punters would have stood for it, but

Apart from a few who enjoy near mythical status (such as the Royal Showband and a handful of others), most bands came together, played for a few years and then either reinvented themselves, changed their name, or just disappeared, their members either returning to civilian life, or scattering to two or three new bands.

Top singles - 1974 back in the early seventies, Mick dressed up in different costumes, made all kinds of noises, ran around the stage and then would end up singing, which brought in dancers in droves to see the oddity.

Scott was drafted as the band's new lead singer.In November, 1975, a blurb in Paschal Mooney's Country Round Up was talking about the band's new lead singer, Johnny Scariff after nearly going off the road in 1974. George Hilliard was now managing the band and we're not sure how much longer they lasted.

Lonely Planet's Top 10 list of countries is out! Find out which destinations get the nod for good value and unique experiences -- plus where to go to beat the crowds.

ondering where in the world to travel next year? The experts at Lonely Planet have a few ideas.

Every year, the company selects its Top 10 Countries to feature in its Best In Travel guide. Based on recommendations from its extended community of travellers, panelists select countries that offer a little some extra for the months ahead.

You won’t find a to-do list of popular destinations like France or England here.

Lonely Planet is known for favouring offthe-beaten path destinations — especially when there’s good value to be had for your travel dollars. The annual list also highlights up-and-coming destinations before they become popular, and favourite places where something new is happening.

Here’s a look at this year’s top picks: 10. Madagascar Many people don’t think of the world’s fourth largest island as a tourist destination — yet. Economic crises and political strife have hampered the country’s tourism industry, but Lonely Planet warns Madagascar may soon be on travel agents’ radars again.

What’s the draw? It’s hard to beat the stunning scenery and biodiversity — from beaches to desert to rainforest. You’ll find over 5 per cent of all of the world’s known plant and animal species in this country, and Madagascar offers a paradise for 9. Dominican Republic If you’re thinking of a sunny escape this winter, Lonely Planet calls this country “the Caribbean’s ‘next big thing.’” More airlines and cruises now travel to this country, and tourism in on the rise — but you can still find good value for your money.

Of course, there are hundreds of miles of coastline and no shortage of beachfront resorts, but the DR is arguably the most diverse country in the Caribbean. Think rocky cliffs, sand dunes, mangroves and fishing villages, for instance — not to mention four of the five highest peaks in the islands. Much of the country is rural, but a visit to Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial — the oldest city in the New World — will take you back to its 16th Century Spanish empire roots.

8. Turkey If you crave culture and cuisine, Turkey is sure to please. It’s the land of Ottoman splendour and Byzantine frescos, of bustling market places and grand mosques.

Best of all: more low-cost airlines and better bus services are opening up the southeast regions.

While Istanbul is a must-see, there’s plenty to do outside the major cities. Float over the “fairy chimneys” of Cappadocia in a hot air balloon, or check out the recently uncovered ruins of Göbekli Tepe near Sanliurfa — a temple thought to be the oldest man-made place of worship in the world. While St. Paul journeyed through Turkey, the latest pilgrimage focuses on another important biblical figure.

7. Iceland When the local currency crashed a few years ago, budget-minded travellers got

wise to the beauties of this island nation — but you’ll have to hurry if you to stay ahead of the tourist curve. Tourism is already on the rise thanks to its devoted following, and so are prices thanks to a recovering economy.

Don’t let the name deceive you: glaciers only cover about 11 per cent of the country, and they’re just part of land’s natural beauty. Think lush green summers with endless sunshine and winters with a front row seat for the northern lights.

When you’ve had your fill of its parks, mountains, waterfalls and ethereal Blue Lagoon, enjoy a city escape to trendy Reykjavík. The country is also a top spot for bird watchers, and horse lovers will want to see its famous Icelandic breed.

6. Solomon Islands Is Hawaii too commercial for your taste?

Lonely Planet describes the Solomon Islands as the “South Pacific as it used to be”. Massive luxury resorts have yet to take over its shores. Instead, you’ll find eco-resorts and homestays among the islands — and some first rate scuba diving.

Civil strife, poor infrastructure, a lack of flights and few internal transportation options have kept many travellers away, but much of that is changing. The Solomon Islands won’t stay a hidden gem for long — especially with all this press coverage.

Even the Royal Couple, William and Kate, paid a visit this past fall.

5. Slovakia Once the realm of cheap ski getaways and stag parties, Slovakia’s tourism industry is getting an upscale makeover. Treat yourself to a luxurious cruise down the Danube or plan a city stay in Košice, named the European Capital of Culture in 2013. In addition to being its fabulous historic self, the city will be a hub of creativity and celebrations in the year ahead. For a more active getaway, Lonely Planet also recommends skiing in Jasna, hiking in the Tatras and exploring the country’s national parks — especially the aptly named Slovak Paradise National Park.

Architecture buffs will want to schedule a trip to Bratislava to for a blend of medieval and communist sites, while the wooden churches in Eastern Slovakia remain a testament to the country’s folk culture.

4. Ecuador Get ready to ride the rails! A massive railway project will be finishing up in 2013 that will add new lines and restore the route linking Quito with the coastal port of Guayaquil. The railways are predicted to open up access to the rain forest — and bring in more tourists. However, Lonely Planet notes the new project won’t be your typical journey. One part will link Cotopaxi, Ecuador’s famed 5900 m-high volcano, to the Nariz del Diablo (Devil’s Nose) — which is already a feat of railway engineering. Soon, the railway will claim one of the steepest drops in the Western World, not to mention some fantastic photo opportunities.

3. South Korea Did you know South Korea has quietly

turned itself into a destination for outdoor recreation? Neither do most travellers, so now is your chance to enjoy the great outdoors before everyone else catches on.

The country will be hosting some major sporting events in 2013, so word will spread quickly!

Trekking, skiing, cycling, golf, water sports… There’s a little something for every outdoor adventurer here. If you’re feeling daring, try white water rafting down the Donggang River or zip lining in Sodol Port where you’ll overlook the ocean.

2. Montenegro Think of it as the country that combines all your favourite things into one package.

With its pristine beaches, rugged peaks, deep canyons, historic walled cities, opulent palazzi and welcoming weather, this “pearl of the Mediterranean” is a hotspot for A-list-celebrities and royalty alike. So why is Lonely Planet giving it the nod for “adventure” and being “off-thebeaten track”? Step outside star-studded destinations like Sveti Stefan and you’ll find an ever-growing network of hiking and

biking trails. Improved infrastructure is also making it easier to enjoy the natural beauty of this small country — not to mention providing employment.

1. Sri Lanka This country has had a hard time in recent years — if the civil war from 1983 to 2009 wasn’t bad enough, Sri Lanka was devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. Now the country is getting back on its feet and investing in its tourism industry. Travellers can hop a low-cost flight from Bangkok, and they’ll find their budget goes a long way with low prices on everything from food to accommodations.

Long overlooked on many Asian itineraries, Lonely Planet notes this paradise is back on the map. The culture and scenery is no less spectacular than Sri Lanka’s well-travelled neighbours, and you’ll find the food no less tempting. Tour ancient ruins and sacred cities as well as lush natural reserves — the country has eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, after all. When all that adventure tires you out, relax on one of Sri Lanka’s less-crowded beaches.

What’s ahead for 2013 in the world of technology? We look at the top trends that could affect you this year. proverbial tech iceberg. Experts predict we’ll be doing even more on our smartphones in 2013, and competition will heat up to meet demand. Not only will Apple and Google’s Android-based phones continue to face off, but also Microsoft is making a play for market share with its Windows-based phones. Rumour has it Amazon and Facebook may launch smartphones too.

On the subject of smartphones, another trend has been reported: “nomophobia” — “A state of stress caused by having no access to or being unable to use one’s mobile phone.” In its survey, the majority of users report feeling “naked” without their mobile phone, and are increasingly using them in the bedrooms (43 per cent) and — believe it or not — the bathroom (83 per cent).

t’s 2013 and we still don’t have flying cars, time machines or teleportation devices — but you have to admit technology has come a long way in our lifetimes. Now we live in an increasingly digital, increasingly connected world. It makes you wonder what the “next big thing” will be. We scoured the internet to see what trends experts say will shape how we work and play in 2013. Here are a few of their predictions.

More mobile payments Will 2013 be the year a simple tap of our smartphone handles our purchases? Tech experts certainly think so, and the technology is already taking off across the world. Ireland may be lagging behind, but the first mobile payment app launched here this past autumn. According to a US report, nearly 80 per cent of smartphone users predict they’ll make more mobile payments in the months ahead — and 43 per cent think the traditional wallet is on its way out. Of course, the idea of going cashless isn’t new, but the technology is finally falling into place.

If your TV isn’t equipped with wireless, don’t worry — experts predict a slew of new “boxes” to help you connect.

However, TV shows and movies aren’t the only things we’ll enjoy on these devices. Games, internet browsing and email can all be part of the package, and the technology may be a boon for advertisers aiming to reach new markets. For instance, travel providers are already predicted to tap smart TVs to reach viewers.

Tapping into integrated ecosystems Of course, the competition isn’t just about the hardware. This year, experts say it’s all about the ecosystem — that is, the content, apps and services that are packaged with the mobile devices.

(Not to mention how these devices work with your computer, TV, stereo car and other wireless gizmos.) We’ve already

seen hardware and software producers like Apple and Google get into the content game, but now content sellers such as Amazon are getting into hardware and software.

As you likely know, these ecosystems don’t “play nice” with each other so it’s hard to pick and choose. Consider it a test of customer loyalty in an ever-growing marketplace.

Cloud-based applications are also predicted to be big this year for both businesses and households.

More things will be connected You may have heard buzzwords such as the “Internet of Things” — that’s because it isn’t just computers, TVs and mobile devices that are connected to the internet. We’ve already seen the emergence of smart appliances and wearable technology like Google’s Project Glass.

However, the technology is showing up in all sorts of items thanks to small, embedded sensors and technologies such as near-field communication (NFC) chips.

Connectivity will also affect how we travel. Enhanced drivers licenses are already available in many countries, and some are set to introduce ePassports this summer.

3D printers go mainstream In his talk at ideaCity 2012, robotics expert Hod Lipson predicted the technology “is going to touch every industry” — and it seems other tech experts are dreaming big too. In a recent article in the Huffington Post, one UK tech expert even predicts that 3D printing could “be the biggest revolution in manufacturing since Henry J Ford perfected the moving assembly line” — if a printing company can bring the technology into the mainstream. 3D printers are already on the market, as are designs to “print” a variety of items right in your own home. Are we on the cutting edge of a revolution in manufacturing? We’ll have to wait and see.

New user interfaces change how we interact Do you find current interfaces too cluttered with buttons, banners, textures and colours? Experts predict a return to the basics of good design. The “no frills” approach will improve the user experience and eliminate design faux pas like items imitating their real life counterparts — such as calendars with a paper texture or online agendas with leather stitching. How we interact with devices is changing too. Experts say to expect

Better displays will woo consumers Brighter, clearer and thinner screens are coming to a device near you. HD and Apple’s “retina display” are already making their way to mobile devices and computers, but TVs will up the ante this year. Meet Ultra High-Definition (Ultra HD), the technology that promises to make your viewing experience even more refined this year. What about LED versus LCD? Get ready for OLED. Not only will organic light-emitting diode technology will make screens thinner, lighter and more energy efficient, it will help bring higher colour contrast to screens everywhere. (Think rich, deep blacks.)

Be prepared to pay — OLED will get its start on high-end offerings only.

Niche social networks continue to thrive Think Facebook and Twitter have gotten a little too big? This year, we may see more movement away from networking sites that are trying to be everything to everyone. The consensus from experts is niche social networking sites will continue to grow as people look to come together for a common interest or purpose — without all the distraction. If you’re worried about memorizing more passwords, many of these sites let you login with your existing social media accounts.

More advanced cyber security attacks As technology becomes more sophisticated, so do attempts to use it for harmful and illegal purposes. There’s a lot of ugliness ahead. Some threats keeping experts up at night include nearly impossible to eradicate ransomware, mobile malware and cyber conflict. These attacks could hit your computer, mobile devices and online accounts — and they could impact companies and organizations with whom you deal. Thankfully, there is a silver lining. Experts also predict companies will become more proactive about cyber security. Sounds like a busy year ahead? You bet! Predictions aren’t guarantees, and it may be a few years before we see the full impact of these technologies. Still, it should be interesting to see if and how these trends pan out.

However, if we take small steps to make changes to a few simple dishes, we reap the rewards for a slimmer body and wallet! Taking this small challenge will give you a lift and help you to stick to some of the New Year resolutions that can seem impossible right now. Moving away from butter and sugar is a good way to start. Learning about low fat alternatives will help you to keep the flavour and style of meals that you love. Stewing or Braising is a great way to use a cheaper cut of meat tenderised by the time it is spent cooking with the sauce enriched with the meat juices and nutrients from vegetables and meat in the sauce also.

Effort from baby steps to the quick step, always pays off , enjoy the receipes Seared salmon ginger & soy stirfried vegetables Ingredients 1 1/2 lbs skinless salmon fillets, cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces 1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 1/2 lbs asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2 inch pieces 1 medium red pepper, thinly slice 3 scallions , thinly sliced 3 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons rice vinegar 1 tablespoon grated peeled fresh ginger 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon sugar 3/4 cup water Directions: 1. Heat non-stick pan or wok over medium-high heat until hot.

2. Add fish and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

3. Cook fish 5-7 minutes or until fish turns opaque throughout, gently stirring occasionally.

4. Transfer fish to plate and keep warm.

5. To same pan, add asparagus and red pepper, cook covered for 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender/crisp, stirring occasionally.

6. Meanwhile in a small bowl, whisk together green onion, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, garlic, cornstarch, sugar and water until well blended.

7. Add soy sauce mixture to vegetables and bring to boil.

8. Boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

9. Spoon vegetable mixture over fish and toss gently to coat.

Beef bourguignonne Ingredients • 3 1/2 tablespoons olive oil • 3 pounds lean stewing beef, cut into 2-inch cubes • carrot, sliced • 1 onion, sliced • Salt and pepper • 2 tablespoons flour • 3 cups red wine, young and full-bodied • 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 cups brown beef stock • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

Cooking Directions Remove bacon rind and cut into lardons (sticks 1/4-inch thick and 1 1/2 inches long).

Preheat oven to 230 degrees.

Sauté bacon in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a flameproof casserole over moderate heat for 2 to 3 minutes to brown lightly. Remove to a side dish with a slotted spoon.

Dry beef in paper towels; it will not brown if it is damp. Heat fat in pan until almost smoking. Add beef, a few pieces at a time, and sauté until nicely browned on all sides. Add it to the bacon.

In the same pan, brown the sliced vegetables. Pour out the excess fat.

Return the beef and bacon to the casserole and toss with 1/2 teaspoon salqt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.

Then sprinkle on the flour and toss again to coat the beef lightly. Set casserole uncovered in middle position of preheated oven for 4 minutes.

Toss the meat again and return to oven for 4 minutes (this browns the flour and coves the meat with a light crust).

Remove casserole and turn oven down to 160 degrees.

Stir in wine and 2 to 3 cups stock, just enough so that the meat is barely covered.

Add the tomato paste, garlic, herbs and bacon . Bring to a simmer on top of the stove.

Cover casserole and set in lower third of oven. Regulate heat so that liquid simmers very slowly for 3 to 4 hours. The meat is done when a fork pierces it easily.

While the beef is cooking, prepare the onions and mushrooms.

Heat a pan and Add onions , mushrooms and sauté over moderate heat for about 10 minutes, rolling them so they will brown as evenly as possible..

When the meat is tender, pour the

contents of the casserole into a sieve set over a saucepan.

Return beef to casserole dish. Distribute the cooked onions and mushrooms on top.

Skim fat off sauce in saucepan. Simmer sauce for a minute or 2, skimming off additional fat as it rises. You should have about 2 1/2 cups of sauce thick enough to coat a spoon lightly.

If too thin, add a little corn flour to thicken . If too thick, mix in a few tablespoons stock. Taste carefully for seasoning.

Pour sauce over meat and vegetables.

Cover and simmer 2 to 3 minutes, basting the meat and vegetables with the sauce several times.

Serve in casserole with potatoes, noodles or rice, and decorated with parsley.

Potato and leek soup Ingredients • 2 pounds boiling potatos, peeled & sliced • 1 pound leeks, washed and sliced • 1 onion, chopped • 1 celery stalk, sliced • 5 cups chicken or vegetable stock • 2 1/2 cups of milk • 4 tablespoons olive oil • 1 bay leaf • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • salt & pepper • 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives Method Add oil to the pot Add the vegetables, cover, and cook with out colour for 5 7 minutes, stirring freguently.

Add the stock or broth, 1/2 cup of milk, the bay leaf, parsley, salt and pepper.

Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook until the vegetables are tender, 25 to 30 minutes.

Discard the bay leaf, and let the soup cool for 10 - 15 minutes.

Transfer to a blender or food processor in batches and process until smooth.

Heat the puree in a saucepan over medium heat and stir in the remaining 2 cups of milk.

Serve the soup in bowls and swirl in 1 tablespoon half-and-half into each serving.

Sprinkle with the chives.

Memories of the Great Sunday Roast Recalling the glory — and the gravy — of those delicious weekly repasts when I was a kid. Chefs were still unknown. Vol-au-vents and prawn cocktails – so retro now – were the height of sophistication. The only wine to hit our table was Blue Nun. My younger sister would struggle through, shearing, tearing and huffing and puffing at the meat (she should have been an actress) but would often leave the fat. I can understand why, but my parents were brought up to eat everything on a plate, including meat, fat, and skin. My mum would point out every little morsel of meat left on the plate. Then the treats of “no trifle unless dinner was eaten” would start.

My sister would raise her eyebrows.

This was seen as an act of defiance and set off the fireworks. An argument would start. My sister would storm out, banging every door in every room in the house on her way to her bedroom (she took the scenic route).

Dad would keep his eyes fixed on the plate, waiting for the moment to be blamed for not backing up. I struggled with a chisel to get through the rock like roast potatoes. An awkward silence would take over and much leg kicking under the table with other sibblings would follow.

omeone whose name escapes me once opined that the two most beautiful words in the English language are “cheque enclosed.

Good — but not even close. The two most beautiful words in the English language are “Sunday Dinner.”Or used to be.

Sunday Dinner hails from a simpler, statelier time when dad went out to work, Mum ruled the roost and any kid foolish enough to whine about “entitlement issues” probably would have been gonged with a wooden spoon.

Undemocratic? Decidedly. Stodgy and stultifying? A little. But there were compensations — like the pungent pageant that unfolded on the spanking white dining room tablecloth every Sunday at about 1.30ish. Sunday Dinner.

There was a time, my friends, when the days of the week were stacked in descending order from that sacrosanct Sabbath day institution.

Some called it Sunday Roast or Sunday Tea. I’ve also heard it referred to as Sunday Joint.

A Sunday roast is a meal that despite our modern pressures on time, brought families and friends together to share stories and experiences over a slow cooked and slowly eaten feast.

Introduced originally in Britain, it’s no longer Britain’s favourite meal (apparently that’s Chinese stir fry) but it’s certainly one to evoke the fondest

memories.

For me growing up in the seventies it is one of the fondest memories that I have.

My love of the Sunday roast started at a young age. It wasn't so much the cooking of it that got me, but the sounds and smells and atmosphere as I woke up on Sunday mornings – my mum’s clattering pots and pans, the smell of beef dripping hanging thick in the air, or if it was chicken the smell of the stuffing throughout the house and the ring of the pan against the rack as it goes into the oven, giving me a tantalizing glimpse of the roast joint. My mum would cook roast dinners every Sunday without fail. So I remember our Sunday dinners from a very early age. In fact thinking back on it the ritual would begin on a saturday evening with the peeling of the spuds, carrots and the sprouts. The peas would be steeped with their little tablet overnight also. And if i was really good I would get to hold the fork in the dish as my mum poured the hot water over the jelly which would form part of the trifle that we had to look forward to the next day.

There were six children in our household in the seventies and each Sunday we were all up early and booted and suited for 11am mass. The oven would be turned down low prior to us leaving and all pots would be checked for enough water. Then we would pile into the blue beetle and off to church we would go. And every week the chat was

the same on the way home from church “I hope those potatoes haven’t boiled dry” or “did I remember to turn the oven down” etc etc. I swear my mum sat through the whole of church worrying about her dinner. And thinking back probably most women in the congregation were thinking the same.

Back then, there was no such thing as cooking meat medium rare or medium

Carrying on the tradition To this day I carry the torch for Sunday dinners. They are still a mainstay of our family life.

Our son who is only six, loves his Sunday dinner, his favourite is his mums stuffing and gravy. We still have battles though if the vegetables can be seen.

Dinner times are just as mental as my childhood. Tantrums, food flinging, force feeding and more tantrums are the norm.

But this doesn’t matter a jot to me. It still means everything to me. to be able to sit at the table as a family, even though nine times out of 10 meal times are dysfunctional.

I do wonder what my childs’ memories of Sunday dinner will be when he is my age.

(Your veterinarian can give tips for the best method.) Be sure to use a soft toothbrush and pet toothpaste, which may be chicken, salmon or tunaflavored. Avoid “human” toothpaste, as the fluoride in them is toxic to animals.

Regular exercise.

Regular exercise not only helps to keep your pet (and you) fit, but it’s a great time for bonding and sharing some good old-fashioned fun. For dog owners it’s also a good time to socialize with other dogs and their owners, as well as an opportunity to teach your pouch proper manners and walking etiquette.

How much exercise is enough?

According to the Veterinary Association, dogs should have a brisk walk at least twice daily for 15 to 20 minutes. For cats, schedule at least two 15-minute play times each day. Cat tip: Laser pointer toys, while relatively inexpensive, provide not only a fun frolic for your cat, but a good source of exercise.

Good nutrition Despite the best of intentions, those yummy leftovers and table scraps aren’t

always in the best interest of your dog or cat. Leftovers can contribute to unhealthy weight gain – and also cause pets to go off their regular food, which understandably, tastes bland in comparison.

While many pet owners opt to prepare homemade food for their pets , many veterinarians warn that pets on a homemade diet may not be getting an adequate ratio of vitamins and minerals.

Commercial pet foods are routinely tested for nutritional composition, something many pet owners are unable to do on their own. Senior dogs (age 7+), for example, are often put on a special diet that is lower in proteins and minerals and higher in fibre than what is recommended for younger dogs. So if you do opt for the homemade option, be sure to do your research.

Is your pet on the pudgy side?

Excessive weight gain is a growing health risk not only for humans, but for our furry companions as well. In fact, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 43 per cent of dogs and 53 per cent of cats are overweight. An additional 10 per cent of all dogs and 19 per cent of all cats are considered obese.

Proper identification If you haven’t done so already, take the time to get proper identification for your pet. This will enhance the chances that your pet will be returned safely if lost. There are many effective means of pet identification available including micro chipping, tattooing, and personalized dog/cat tags.

Also, be aware of your municipal bylaws that require that dogs (and sometimes cats) be licensed and registered. Licensing your dog and cat also provides a way for pets to be identified and returned safely if lost.

Make cuddle time.

Last but not least, give your pet lots of hugs, love and attention. They will thrive – and you’ll reap the benefits as well. Bonding with your pet goes a long way in helping to reduce stress – a wellknown cause of illness – and promotes general well being.

5 hidden home hazards

Keep your home sweet -- and safe -- for the kids in your life. Each year thousands are injured as a result of consumer products in their homes. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has identified five hidden home hazards that put our family members — particularly the littlest ones — at risk.

Recalled Products As much as possible stay informed about any product safety recalls. While government agencies can get dangerous products (such as recalled toys, clothing, children’s jewelry, appliances, and electrical products) off the store shelves, it’s up to the consumer to remove them from the home.

Stay on top of news reports about recalls, or find the information online.

Magnets Magnets can be very small and powerful these days, making them popular in toys, building sets and jewelry. These magnets, if swallowed, can cause serious injuries to children. Magnets that fall out of toys are a particular risk, but

so are the small intact pieces of building sets that contain magnets.

Experts warn that if two or more magnets, or a magnet and another metal object are swallowed separately, they can attract to one another through intestinal walls and become

trapped in place. While some parents and physicians may think that the materials will pass through the child without causing harm, magnets can attract in the body and twist or pinch the intestines, causing holes, blockages, infection and death, if not treated promptly.

Unstable furniture or appliances Tip-overs pose a serious risk for injury or even death, especially to young children. Be sure that all furniture, TVs and other appliances are stable even if children should pull or climb on them. Particular dangers include: television stands, shelves, bookcases, dressers, desks, and chests. TVs placed on top of furniture can pose a particularly dangerous risk.

Also be aware of items left on top of the TV, furniture, and countertops, such as toys, remote controls as well as treats

that might tempt kids to climb.

Tip: For added security, anchor heavy furniture to the floor or attach to a wall. Freestanding ranges and stoves should be installed with anti-tip brackets.

Windows and Coverings Prevent accidental strangling by using cordless blinds or keep cords and chains permanently out of reach of children. And keep in mind that children can also strangle on any window drapery that can be formed into a loop.

Other tips to prevent strangulation: • Cut looped cords and install a safety tassel at the end of each pull cord or use a tie-down device, and install inner cord stays.

• Do not place a child’s crib or playpen within reach of a window blind.

Of course, the dangers of windows don’t end with window coverings and pull cords. While children love to play around windows, they can also, unfortunately, fall out of them.

The Garden in February February is the 'beginning of the end' of winter. Although there is no official 'first day of spring' some people regard the first day of February as the first day of spring. In Ireland, Saint Brigid's day is the first or second of February - approximately half way between the Winter solstice and the spring Equinox.

In any case, it really doesn't feel like the first day of spring, and despite the snowdrops and the crocuses which have appeared, the rush of spring energy is still a bit away.

If you have damp or heavy soil, you may well have a garden with a good supply of rushes. If you do, it's simple and fun to make a Saint Brigid's cross. After spring bulbs have flowered, remember to allow

their leaves and flowers to die back naturally. This is important, as the plants will store their energy for next year's growth by putting on a growth spurt now. Flowers such as wind anemones (Anemone blanda) set seed after flowering, so the flowers should be allowed to die back. Ideally, grass around these plants should be left un-mown until late April or May. It is still the season for planting bare root trees and shrubs. Stock starts to run low as the season progresses, and there is already a Europeanwide shortage of bare root privet, laurel and hornbeam.

This is probably because of the previous harsh winters, leading to higher-than-average sales of the hardiest plants as people fear losing the more tender varieties. These plants are pretty well unavailable, and the prices have gone up dramatically as stock became scarcer and scarcer. However, in the Irish context, with such a rural population and such a great landscape, we should plant native plants wherever we can: for hedgerows, traditional

species such as Holly, Hawthorn and Blackthorn. And for woodlands, other native species

such as Oak, Birch, Mountain ash and Alder. Be sure to research well before

purchasing, as trees and shrubs have different requirements in terms of site and soil.

Mercedes-Benz CLA unveiled T

his is the third incarnation of the Aclass chassis floorpan, which also supports the B-class, the A-class (natch) and a new SUV crossover that will appear in Shanghai later this year.

Nissan has bought the chassis as part of the cooperation deal it has with Mercedes and so it will also appear under the Infiniti small saloon, which debuts at the Geneva motor show in March and which will be built at the company’s Sunderland plant in Tyne and Wear.

Mercedes claims the 15ft 2.3in-long CLA has worldleading aerodynamics (a Cd value of 0.22 at best although that model might not come to the UK), which it derives from the 2012 Concept Style Coupé.

That car was 0.4in wider and 0.8in lower than the production car and it ran on 20in rather than 19in wheels – no wonder some of the magic has been lost. As you might imagine, therefore, the rear seats are slightly compromised by the roof line and the rear accommodation is optimistically labelled, "twoplus-one".

There will also be a 4Matic 4x4 system, which will debut on the CLA, although again, it

probably won’t come to the UK. That’s a shame as it had a fully variable torque split between front and rear axles and at 154lb (70kg), it is the lightest 4x4 system in its class.

The CLA goes on sale in the UK in March this year, with a choice of 2.0- and 1.6-litre petrol engines and a 2.2-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder with 136- and 170bhp. Prices will be about £3,000 more than an Aclass, which means the likely bestselling CLA 180 will cost about £25,000.

The new E-class has a midcycle facelift in all its forms.

There’s a lot of new technology on this car, which is Mercedes’s most profitable model. In the old days, such tech would have to wait until this year’s launch of the new S-class. These days, as Thomas Weber, member of the board of management explains, the company pushes driving and safety improvements across all its models as they are renewed. So the new E-class gets a revised assistance package with Collision Prevention Assist and Attention Assist from the forthcoming S-class. There are mildly tweaked looks and more standard equipment including standard DAB radios.

Honda unveils Urban SUV concept at Detroit

AFTER scoring a hit with its CR-V compact SUV, Honda has offered a glimpse at what the automaker's new, even smaller SUV might look like when it hits streets.

The "Urban SUV Concept" made its debut during press previews at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Honda Motor Co. plans to launch a small SUV based on that concept vehicle in Japan by the end of the year and in the US in 2014.

The concept SUV is 22.86 centimeters shorter than the CRV, and hidden rear door handles give it a smooth, coupe-like presence. When it goes on sale in the US it's expected to be priced below the existing CR-V, which starts around $22,700(US) for a 2013 model.

"We believe there is a good market potential for this vehicle," Tetsuo Iwamura, president and chief operating officer of Honda's

North American Regional Operations, said in an interview with reporters at the show.

The new SUV is expected to fill a place in Honda's lineup between the subcompact Fit and the CR-V, and Iwamura said he anticipates it will draw new buyers not poach sales from Honda's existing vehicles. He said the concept for the new SUV is "completely different" than its existing offerings.
