HEW! It’s warm here! As we go to press with the June issue of Mature Living the barometer has certainly moved up a notch or two and we are blessed with beautiful sunshine, making the entire countryside green, colourful and beautiful . . . and thank God for it.

Last month we held our Lifestyle Expo at the Clarion in Sligo and I wish to sincerely thank all the exhibitors and those who attended for making it a memorable weekend. Special thanks to those who travelled from distances to savour the atmosphere at the Clarion.

In our One-on-One in this month’s issue we interview Donegal’s legendary former team manager and hotelier, Brian McEniff, who took time out to talk to us about his many experiences in GAA circles and life in general. He is certainly a mine of information both in terms of GAA and recent Irish history and his continued enthusiasm for the games, business and life in general is nothing short of amazing. In recent years he had worked as an adviser to the Louth team management and was encouraged by their recent Leinster Championship victory over Laois. Some weeks ago he took on the role of interim team manager with his local Bundoran senior team. Like many of our interviewees in recent months he is an inspiration for all “mature” people in Ireland and his story makes for compulsive reading.

Elsewhere, we advise that if you wish to live longer then, perhaps, you should consider sleeping longer. We also offer some suggestions on how you can be a better grandparent – though I’m sure most of you in this category would claim you are doing fine in this regard. We also present the idea that older people who adopt “senior” pets can, in fact, stay healthier and in better shape. We provide an informative guide to some exotic, though inexpensive retirement location options for those who may be considering the alternatives at this time. We also provide some views on the issues that have to be dealt with if some of our children experience divorce or legal separation. Of course, we carry all our regular features in this issue, also.

Over 50s encouraged to use their talents and set up new businesses

esidential workshops will explain how early retirement or redundancy payments could fund new startups. Over 50s are being encouraged to start a new business, using their transferrable skills amassed

during time in the workforce.

Those who have taken early retirement or redundancy payments in particular are being urged to consider starting their own company.

Individuals aged over 50 who are thinking of starting their own

business, or in the early stages of a start-up are being invited to a two day National Workshop on 1st and 2nd July in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone. The “Change, Challenge and Opportunity” two day residential workshop is organised by the network of County and City Enterprise Boards and will focus on giving participants an insight into what is needed to research, start and develop a business.

Organisers are hoping to attract aspiring entrepreneurs like Aidan McCormack of McCormack Training and Consultancy and Carol Gilbert of Madeinwestcork, who both set up businesses after passing the 50 mark.

Aidan McCormack, who attended a Senior Entrepreneur workshop last year, was inspired to set up a successful training and consultancy business. His background was primarily in the Dental and Healthcare sector, where he worked in Senior Management positions for most of his career. He is one of the speakers at the event and says he hasn’t looked back since he made the leap to setting up and running his own business.

Carol Gilbert established Made in West Cork in June 2012. She said: “In 2011, the year after my husband died, I travelled abroad seven times, catching up with family and friends. Each time I was returning from a different country I tried to buy a

memento made in that country but found it difficult to do as most gifts were mass produced in China or the US.” Ms Gilbert believed that despite the recession, the plethora of good food, wonderful crafts and products made in West Cork deserved a wider platform. She said “With more income coming into the region it might encourage young people to stay or incentivise them to come back. Jobs and income are needed to keep rural communities alive”.

The two-day workshop for Over 50s will include sessions on formulating a business plan, recognising transferrable assets, marketing the business and developing an exit strategy.

Keynote speakers include Aidan McCormack alongside Justine Negri, founder of Sole Careers and Denis Coen, Elite Performance Mind Coach, as well as other successful entrepreneurs aged 50 and over, sharing their own experiences and advice.

Hugh Reilly of the County and City Enterprise Boards said: “Ireland, like the rest of Europe, has an aging population; people are living and working longer. In addition people are more likely to move between jobs and develop a number of careers.

People in their fifties and sixties have better health, are more vibrant and seek to make a dynamic contribution to their

communities”.

Mr Reilly continued: “Many people aged over 50 who consider starting their own business must realise that they have achieved transferrable skills during their working lives which are essential for entrepreneurs. People who have taken early retirement or redundancy will often have enough capital for a strong start up. These workshops will provide essential information, from setting up their business, to developing a marketing plan, running a successful company and formulating an exit strategy.” The two day residential workshop, which is taking place at the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd July, will also discuss the financial and nonfinancial supports available to entrepreneurs, how to price a product or service and how to move forward in business.

Two Yeats concerts for Lough Gill

FOLLOWING the release of his album Words for Music Surely, Yann Fanet will be in Co Sligo/Leitrim to sing some of Yeats' most beautiful verse. Yann is a song writer who mainly plays the guitar. He loves traditional Irish and Scottish music.

Yann is greatly inspired by Eddi Reader who sings the poetry of Robert Burns. When once he saw her perform live he decided he wanted to do the same with WB Yeats. After being involved in recording projects he decided to start his solo adventure and released his own Yeats album Words for Music Surely. Yann has always enjoyed writing music. After

his first visit to Sligo 23 years ago he returned to Scotland where he was living, obsessed by the Lake Isle of Innisfree. He found himself in the dark one winter evening following a power cut. He picked up his guitar and naturally started to sing the poem. He is fascinated by how naturally the tune came and developped into something melodic. The musicality of Yeats' verse has led him to continue to set many other poems to music.

Yann sees this album as the beginning of a new journey which will lead to further projects related to Yeats and the Celtic Revival.

Friends of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association raise €10,000 with a very successful Cookery Demonstration

Vital role of Mayo Carers highlighted in nationwide survey

W

hen GMIT Lecturer Gene Rafferty was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) her friends and colleagues in the GMIT wanted to do something to help and show their love and support to Gene.

From mid-2012 Gene’s friends and colleagues have been running a number of fundraising events for the IMNDA in Galway. On Wednesday 15th May 2013 at a lovely reception hosted in the Mervue United Soccer Club which was donated free of charge for this event.

Beautiful food was cooked by retired GMIT lecturer Johnny Carroll and staff from GMIT Hotel & Catering Management presented Marie Reavey Regional Development Officer Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) with a huge cheque for the

sum of €10,000. Marie said “It is a pleasure to be here tonight and accept this fantastic amount raised on behalf of the IMNDA. I am overwhelmed by the amount raised. This was a huge team effort with all hands on deck, but I have to say particular thanks to Ide Jennings and Johnny Carroll who worked tirelessly to make this event the success it was. Without events like this we could not provide the services in the Galway region to people and their families living with MND. This donation will make a such a difference.

Thank you so much to all involved. MND is a progressive neurological condition that leaves people unable to do the everyday things that the rest of us take for granted. Walking, talking and swallowing may become virtually

impossible. MND strikes people of all ages and there is no cure. The IMNDA provides specialized services for people affected by this debilitating disease such as equipment on loan, financial assistance towards home help, advice and home visits by MND Nurse Specialists. In order to provide these vital services the IMNDA depends heavily on the generosity of the public and supporters of the association who generate over 80% of its income. There are approx 320 living with MND in any one time in Ireland. 17 living in Co Galway. Life expectancy is 3-5 years.

Play to recapture Ballina WW1 days

HE centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 is to be remembered in Mayo in the autumn of 2014.

Several hundred from the county died in the war, and countless others were injured in trench warfare on the battle fields of the Somme, Flanders, Ypres, Gallipoli, etc. Many had enlisted with the Connaught Rangers.

Today the Mayo fallen are remembered and named in the wonderful Mayo Peace Park in Castlebar. Over 200,000 Irishmen fought in the war, and approximately 30,000 died.

Now plans are being made for the staging of a specially written commemorative play to honour the memory and the times of some of those men and women and their families, their neighbours and the social conditions that prevailed between 1914-1918. The play, by Terry Reilly, who has written extensively about the First World War, will be performed by Ballina’s celebrated Riverside Theatre Group under its highly experienced director Ray Collins.

The play will track the lead into the war, the ups and downs of life during

the conflict at home and overseas, the Easter Rising and the ending of the confrontation in November 1918.

Author Terry Reilly said the play will deal with many aspects of local life during the period. “It will be a mix of sadness, fun, tears, music and song, and hopefully the narrative will lead to a better understanding of the motives of those from the region who went to war, and in many cases paid with their lives,” he said.

Award winning Director Ray Collins, whose connection with local amateur dramatics extends over a lifetime, said he was very excited at what would be a challenging undertaking.

“Happily, we have great talent in the town and area and I am looking forward to casting new and old faces for this historical production,” he said.

The play will open its run in Ballina, and the author and director say they are most anxious that as many as possible will share in a unique learning experience, both on stage and behind the scenes.

The vital unpaid work by Carers in Mayo has been highlighted in a national survey, adding further weight to the argument that Carers must be protected, supported and promoted by the Government as a matter of national urgency, Independent MEP Marian Harkin said today (7 June).

At the start of National Carers Week (June 1016), Harkin - who Chairs the European Parliament Carers Interest Group - said that the Regional Quality of Life Survey published recently by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows that there are currently 6,558 Carers working in Mayo, a full 5% of the county's population. "Among these Carers, a significant 27.9% are providing unpaid care for 43 or more hours per week, " the Ireland North & West MEP noted, adding that "this work saves the State tens of millions in healthcare expenses every year, and in many cases allows the people being cared for to remain living in their own homes, with a real quality of life and a sense of belonging in their own community, in their own place". This provides further evidence - as if any were still needed - that the role played by Carers is of unquestionable importance to Ireland's societal and economic wellbeing," the Independent MEP concluded, adding that "the Government must do more to maintain adequate support structures for Carers if the essential work they do is to continue".

20th Birthday of the Post Polio Support Group

T

he Post Polio Support Group is celebrating its twentieth birthday – 20 years supporting those who contracted Polio in the epidemics of the 1940’s and 1950’s. Sligo members of the Post Polio Support Group were absolutely delighted to be invited to a civic reception in the Mayor’s Parlour to celebrate this milestone and to pay tribute to its amazing work in supporting and informing Polio Survivors and their families as well as the health care professionals and the wider

public, on the plight of those who having contracted Polio in the early part of the 20th century. Some are now experiencing new symptoms of muscle weakness, joint pain, breathing difficulties and severe fatigue, which is known as Post Polio Syndrome.

Thanks to the work of pioneer scientists Salk and Sabin, who developed a vaccine against Polio in the 1960s, and the on-going work of Rotary International and the Bill Gates Foundation in carrying out a vaccination

programme worldwide, Polio as an infectious disease is now consigned to the history books, but the survivors of those original epidemics are still here, all of them getting older and most of them experiencing Post Polio Syndrome.

It is estimated that there are about 6,000 Polio Survivors in Ireland although there are no definite records.

The Post Polio Support Group was founded in 1993 by 3 survivors who were themselves experiencing the symptoms of

Paula Lahiff and Sean Doyle (Sligo Rotary) Post Polio Syndrome which had just been recognised as a medical condition, and felt that there must be many more people like them who could do with support. They operated on a very small scale out of a flat in Kevin Street in Dublin as they tried to make contact with other Polio Survivors throughout the country. And contact them they did. Slowly they built up a database of members, all of whom were experiencing physical and/or psychological distress due to their polio. The group now has over 900 members and it is still growing. The Head Office is in Dublin and it is run by a voluntary Board of Directors and a staff of 3. They assist their members by providing heating grants and respite care, along with aids and appliances including callipers, bespoke footwear, electric scooters and wheelchairs.

There are now 21 social support groups throughout the country and a network of peer telephone support which means that over 100 Polio Survivors get a phone call on a regular basis every month just for a chat and to exchange tips and information. In Sligo/Leitrim and the surrounds there are about 30 people living with Polio that we know of. The Sligo Social Support Group is run by Brian Crummy with assistance from Paula Lahiff. They are a determined proactive group of people who are fighting against the odds for the right to live their lives on an equal par with other citizens - a peer support group the like of which is not seen very often – either in

Ireland or worldwide.

It is estimated that by 2025 the numbers of Polio Survivors will have decreased considerably and by 2040 Polio will most certainly be consigned to the history books. But in the meantime the survivors are still here and they need support to enable them to function on equal terms with able-bodied people.

They need the structural environment to be more disabled-friendly, they need to be able to drive their adapted cars in order to get to work or into town, they need grants to adapt their homes to make them more accessible, and they need care assistants to help them with activities of daily living. With this small assistance most Polio survivors are able to live independently within the community, but take it away and many will end up in institutional care costing the country many hundreds of thousands of euro.

The PPSG receives some funding from the HSE but this has decreased drastically in recent years and the group must raise the rest themselves, and each year there is a constant quest for funds to enable the Group to keep going. In Sligo there is a Church Gate Collection on the first weekend in November and the people of Sligo are very generous indeed in contributing to this collection.

Gerry Walsh speaks with Brian McEniff

L

EGENDARY former Donegal GAA manager/player and hotelier Brian McEniff took time out last week to talk to us about his life, his current interests and hopes for the future in a county and country that has seen many changes over the 71 years of his life.

In the Gaelic football world Brian is, undoubtedly, a Godfather-type figure and the pinnacle of his managerial career was the achieving of AllIreland success over Dublin in the 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Final. He also managed Ulster for 25 years from 1982 until 2007 and has coached the Ireland international rules football team to success over the Australia international rules football team. Many might not be aware that as a player he received an All-Star Award in 1972 and has two Ulster Senior Football Championship medals.

While Brian still gets a great buzz out of football (evidenced by the fact that he has only

recently taken on the role of acting team manager with the Bundoran senior team, having been involved with Louth over the past three years), Brian’s main interests are his extended family and his chain of hotels.

As chairman of the Brian McEniff Hotel group he oversees the running of six hotels – The Hollyrood and Great Northern (Bundoran), Southern (Sligo), Yeats Country (Rosses Point), Westport Woods and The Skylon, Dublin.

Most of his children and/or their spouses are involved in the group. His daughter-in-law, Audrey (married to his son, Sean), manages The Hollyrood.

Audrey’s mother had worked with him in the hotel business as far back as 1967.

Brian’s interest in the catering business started at an early age.

In an interview in 2004 he said: “From the age of eight or nine my mother had me washing dishes on a biscuit tin at the Hollyrood.” He studied hotel

management at Cathal Brugha Street College in Dublin and worked for several years in Toronto, Canada. In the midsixties he returned to the family business – the Hollyrood. His father was in bad health and he took on the running of the business with his mother. While in college he met the love of his life, Catherine (O’Leary). She was 17 and he was 18. They got married later and the rest is history – they have 10 grown-up children.

Against the background of the 1970 bank strike, with credit frozen and the Northern troubles building, Brian still managed to develop the business. He brought in some of the first coach tours from England, expanded and modernised the hotel, attracted conferences and offered entertainment.

Brian, himself, played the piano. He befriended many wellknown musicians and is a distant cousin of country entertainer, Philomena Begley. He was attracted to the Richard Fizmaurice Ceili Band back in the ‘60s and ’70. He was close to artistes like Phil Coulter and Paul Brady, who received his start performing in the

Hollyrood. He recalls Paul’s parents urging him to convince the young performer to choose a different path just weeks before completing an Honours Degree.

However, despite the efforts of everybody the young entertainer joined the Johnstons folk group back in the late ‘60s and we all know what happened afterwards.

While Brian developed his hotel chain in the ‘eighties and ‘nineties he admits things have been difficult enough during the past 5 and a half years. The economy has slowed down and there are too many hotels, many run by Receivers working for banks. It is sometimes difficult for family-run hotels to compete in this environment. However, he still believes the consumer will appreciate quality and the personal nature of the service his group has to offer The Donegal football legend and businessman is a mine of information on his county and culture. He loves everything Irish, the language, literature, music and history. He currently lives at 1 Station Road, formerly Railway Road, the end of the (Great Northern) railway line, literally at the back of the Hollyrood Hotel.

McEniff honoured with Hall of Fame Award

ictured is Brian McEniff joining the ranks of Gaelic Football greats as he was inducted into the MBNA Kick Fada Hall of Fame at a special presentation ceremony in Croke Park back in August 2011.

A legend in both the Donegal and wider GAA community, Brian has enjoyed an outstanding career both as a player and manager for over forty years. An All-Star in 1972, he featured in the first Donegal team to win an Ulster Championship that year.

Brian has also had an illustrious managerial career, leading Donegal to an All Ireland in 1992, Ulster to ten Railway Cups as well as leading the Irish Compromise Rules Teams in 2000 and 2001.

Brian was joined in Croke Park for the announcement by former winners Billy Morgan, Frank McGuigan, Jimmy Keaveney, Donie O’Sullivan, Paddy Doherty and Peter Nolan.

The last train left Bundoran in 1957. At one time 16 trains would come to the station on a Sunday – the sugar trains from the north of Ireland (as sugar was not available in the north at the time). The Bundoran – Dublin express train was a four-hour journey, passing through Enniskillen, Clones, Castleblayney, Dundalk and on to Dublin. The Great Northern Railway Hotel, of course, is now the Great Northern.

The hotel and golf links were purchased from CIE in 1977 by Brian and his brother, Sean, and Brian’s brother-ion-law, Michael Burke, for £125,000.

His mother, Elizabeth Begley, from Carrickmore, Tyrone, came from a strong farming and nationalist tradition.

He was proud as a young boy to have met Tom Barry. He feels his love of everything Irish, particularly his enthusiasm for the GAA, could have been gleaned from his Carrickmore cousins. Coincidentally, his wife, also from a farming background in Cork, was particularly fond of Irish dancing.

Brian first became actively involved with Donegal GAA when he returned from Toronto in 1966, playing on the same team as the current most senior civil servant with Donegal County Council, County Manager Michael McCloone. He was player-manager of the first Donegal team to win an Ulster Senior Championship in 1972, the year he achieved an All-Star. He has won numerous county titles with his home club, the famous St. Joseph’s (Bundoran/Ballyshannon), the last one in 1979. Under his leadership, Ulster won 12 Railway Cup Finals and in 1975 he assisted the Sligo team which won the Connacht Senior Championship.

His last period of management was in the early-2000s. He had been advised by many people not to come back, but he brought Donegal to the All-Ireland Senior semi-final in 2003, the last time Donegal would achieve this feat until the recent McGuinness era. He suffered from poor health during this period and had a stint inserted at one stage. He exited the managerial stage in 2005 and stood down from management of the Ulster team in 2007, 25 years after taking the job in 1982. It was during this period, however, that he blooded players like Karl Lacey, the McGees, McFadden, Bradley, Neil Gallagher and others. Jim would bring them to another stage later. He remembers Neil McGee at 17 and Karl Lacey (18). They were brilliant, talented lads. While people may talk in terms of Jim McGuinness and his system they often forget the raw talent that was actually there. Naturally, he is proud of his county’s achievements in recent years. Though visibly suffering from a bad back he appeared on Up for the Match ahead of the 2012 Final. The day after undergoing surgery he attended the 2012 All-Star Awards in Dublin. He regrets the fact he was unable to attend the victorious team’s home-coming. When asked at an interview before the game he said: “If I had to walk to Dublin I’d be at that match.”

Thankfully, due to procedures, his back problem has stabilised, though he has to watch his movements, but his recent return to local management provides some indication of the man’s energies. He also commented enthusiastically on Louth’s performance in the current Leinster championship, following their victory over Laois. They had their share of poor luck in the past (he was referring, of course, to the “robbery” against Meath in the 2010 Leinster final, during the period he was working as an adviser with the county).

On the general economic front Brian is disappointed with the impact of the cutbacks.

He feels it is time to put more money into circulation. Even putting money into some form of construction would provide jobs for trades of all kinds and engineers. It is time to invest more in farming and tourism and develop water power and sea power. “If I can create 20 jobs it will have a multiplier effect”.

He would like to see the country grow back to what it was and bring back those who have gone away. They will be better, more rounded people because of their experience. He recalled how he held two full-time jobs when he was in Toronto.

His advice to young people: “Educate yourselves. Even when you think you have finished with education don’t be afraid to go back and get what suits you; the economy will take time to come around and you will be ready”.

He provided this advice at a recent All-Ireland B Colleges presentation.

He strongly advised the students to keep clear of drugs – they can destroy lives, and he had first-hand experience of this.

Like fellow GAA stalwart, Dr. Mick Loftus (who we interviewed some months ago), Brian is a Pioneer and proudly wears his pin.

He has tremendous admiration and respect for Dr. Mick, with whom he retains a strong friendship.

He first met Dr. Mick back in 1968 when he refereed the first ever All-Ireland Club Championship between his own St Joseph’s (Bundoran/Ballyshannon) and Dunmore McHales from Galway.

Brian played for his club, who were victorious over the Galway men on that day.

Dr. Mick refereed the All-Ireland Championship final between Down and Kerry in the same year. Brian McEniff is a joy to interview. His enthusiasm for sport, business and life is infectious.

I got the feeling his influence in GAA circles, in particular, will persist for many years to come.

Here are some tips to keep you on the path to speaking in another tongue.

* Focus initially on the 100 most common words of any language.

These will get you by in the short run while you are increasing your vocabulary. * Strive to master the past tense of verbs before learning the present tense and put off learning the future tense until you’ve mastered the first two. * Develop your own phrase book. As words, phrases and eventually sentences become familiar to you, keep a log of those that you will be using repeatedly. * Label the items in your house with their names in the language you are learning. By seeing an item and its name in, say, German, you can learn it more easily. * Employ your creativity in learning new words. Visual imagery can help considerably when attempting to recall a word in the language you are learning. * If it helps, make up your own corny phrases to aid in helping you to recall new words and new concepts. * Review in your head all day long the words and phrases that you’ve been practising during more formal sessions. It’s reinforcing to “practise in your head.” * Seek podcasts and radio broadcasts on the web when you can. This ia a supreme advantage over legions of

language learners of previous generations.

As you become more immersed in your learning routines, begin to develop the capacity of thinking in the new language.

The ways in which ideas are expressed in other languages, particularly the Indians, often differ vastly from that of English. You’ll know you’re on the right trail when you find yourself thinking in your target language without being conscious of it.

Twenty-four/7 Tutor, at www.247tutor.com, offers puzzles, multiple choice quizzes and flash cards for several popular languages in addition to pronunciations by native speakers. The app provides no grammar and little context.

How to Be a Better Grandparent As grandparents we all want to make the most of the precious family time we get to spend with our grandchildren. You can create deep, loving relationships with your grandchildren by sharing the things you love and by learning about what excites them.

Whether you’re a full-time grandparent, a step-grandparent, or a long distance grandparent living thousands of miles away, you can find new ways to strengthen family ties and provide your grandchildren with joyful memories and valuable life lessons.

Talk with parents about their rules.

Consistency is important for kids, so know the behaviour limits your grandchild has to follow at home and maintain the rules when he or she is with you.

Enforce any agreed upon punishment for bad behaviour, whether it’s a “time out” or loss of privileges, for example.

Baby proof your home, to ensure safety for infants and toddlers. It may have been a number of years since you had young children in your home, so it’s important to check with your grandchild’s parents about ways to baby proof your home to ensure they’re comfortable leaving the child with you.

What's so grand about being a grandparent?

In no particular order, grandparenting is an opportunity to play, to love someone new, to appreciate the magic of a developing mind, and to be needed by someone again.

Grandparents can: • Share the things they're passionate about with a new audience.

• See the world in a new way through younger eyes.

• Experience games, music, nature, reading, and other interests in conjunction with a curious young mind.

• Provide expanded support and encouragement to their grandchildren.

• Use their breadth of experience to avoid the pitfalls they may have encountered as parents the first time around.

• Watch children develop through all stages of growth.

• Learn about their grandkids' music and passions.

• Provide input that parents cannot.

Usually, grandparents have the benefit of interacting on a level that is once removed from the day-to-day responsibilities of parents. This can make it easier to develop a close bond with grandchildren. From near or far, grandparenting can provide continuity in a child's life. Grandparents are often the family historians, and can add a rich sense

of family tradition to a child's life.

Additionally, contact with grandparents can teach children positive attitudes towards aging and help them develop skills to enhance their own lifelong learning.

Of course, not everything about being a grandparent is great all of the time.

Becoming a grandparent at a young age can make some people feel prematurely old and, just as parents do, grandparents sometimes have to deal with colicky babies and moody teenagers. For most though, the benefits of being a grandparent far outweigh the drawbacks.

The role of a grandparent in a child's life There are as many different roles for grandparents as there are different family configurations and needs. Some grandparenting requires a full-time commitment. For others, grandparenting is a weekend together, an afternoon play date, a summer holiday, a chat on the phone, or an email exchange every now and then.

A good first step to a long and successful relationship with your grandchild is to establish some ground rules with your son or daughter: Be clear about what role you want to have in your grandchild's life. How often you want to babysit, for example, or whether you’d like to be included in events such as school functions.

Common grandparenting pitfalls to avoid Whatever your specific circumstances, by expressing love, showing concern for your grandchild's safety and wellbeing, and being consistent in your behaviour, you are already doing a good job of grandparenting.

To avoid potential conflict within your family, try to avoid these common grandparenting pitfalls: Trying to be the parent. As much as you might want to tell your children how to raise your grandkids, it’s not your role.

Respect the parenting decisions your children make for your grandkids.

Buying your grandkids’ affection. It’s tempting for grandparents to shower their grandkids with gifts, but check with the child's parents before you buy more toys.

Maybe substitute some of your gift giving with activities instead. Do something with your grandchild that you both love and will build memories.

Overindulging the first few grandchildren and then not being able to repeat it as additional grandchildren come along. This can cause resentment from your own children who have kids later in life.

Remember that whatever you do for your first grandchild (college fund, beach holidays, trips to the zoo) will set a precedent that you’ll need to repeat for every other grandchild.

Ignoring boundaries. A grandparent who won’t enforce limits and gives in to their grandchild’s every whim can infuriate parents. By allowing your grandkids to misbehave, overindulge in candy and junk food, or ignore bedtimes, for example, you’re only encouraging unhealthy behaviour and making their parents’ job even harder.

When children divorce When a readers daughter and son-in-law divorced in the mid-’90s, she was devastated. “I adored my son-in-law,” she says. “With three daughters, he had become the son we hadn’t had.” Fortunately, the divorce was amicable, and Alice sees her son-in-law at family gatherings such as the grandkids’ graduations and her granddaughter’s wedding last summer. “But I grieved for a long time,” she says, “and, to be honest, I was really angry with my daughter for a while for not trying harder.”

When your grandchild is a baby, toddler, or very young child, engage the parents to keep up to date on your grandchild’s progress, his or her current interests, and the type of reading or viewing material that might be appropriate. When the child is old enough to interact, whether on the phone, via email, or through regular mail, start engaging the child directly.

Grandparents in the digital age For the computer-savvy, the Internet can add a whole new dimension to long-distance grandparenting. Email, instant messaging, and video conferencing can all help to shrink the miles and keep you in touch with your grandchildren. Use the available technology to engage your grandchild in creative activities rather than simply asking, “How’s school?” For example, you can play online games with your grandchild, start an online book club or fantasy sports league with them, or share videos of you or your grandkids enjoying a favorite hobby. Try exchanging jokes or favorite family recipes via email, or have them scan or fax report cards or pictures they’ve drawn.

Audio or video recordings.

You can record yourself reading a few of your favourite children's books and send the recording along with the books, or make a tape of songs you would sing if you were together.

Family scrapbooks. Kids love to hear stories about their family. If you can’t be with them to recount family stories first hand, try writing them down. Add photos or create a scrapbook (online or off).

Encourage your grandkids to

add their own memories and photos.

All of these small things communicate your interest and love. Whenever possible, though, try to be present for the most important events in your grandchild’s life, such as graduations, recitals, holidays, or whatever events are important to your family.

Step-grandparenting Have you married another grandparent? Have your kids become stepparents? Stepgrandparenting has grown as a family phenomenon because of the growing number of blended families.

As with all aspects of blended families, step-grandparenting can present awkward moments and create complex relationships—especially if there are already other grandparents in the picture.

Children might feel the need to be loyal to the original grandparents and conflicted about giving and receiving affection in the new relationship. With patience, understanding, and open communication, though, a step-grandparent can become an important part of a blended family, and a new friend for a child to love.

Help for step-grandparents: Learn all you can about blended families and understand stepfamily problems.

Get to know each stepchild as an individual.

Give everybody time to adjust to the new blended family.

Be patient, supportive, loving, caring, and non-competitive.

Reserve a special place for your step-grandchild's things at your home. Don’t expect to love your step-grandchildren instantly. Affection takes time.

Even if you don’t like your step-grandchildren, at least treat them with respect.

Family customs differ from family to family, so be flexible in your grandparent behaviour.

Talk over problems with a close friend, therapist, or support group.

or grandparents like Alice, a divorce can foster resentment, especially if the partner left behind is her child. It can also be distressing if the partner, who has left, has taken the grandchildren, leaving a grandparent with the possibility of limited or even no access to the children.

Even when it’s an amicable separation, divorce is painful for the partners, and it can be more distressing and bewildering for children, who may even feel responsible and suffer from guilt and depression. The very same emotions can plague grandparents.

Grief, the kind Alice felt, is a common emotion for people who have had a good relationship with a daughter-in-law or son-in-law.

Grief is a natural reaction and will take time to heal. There may also be guilt over divided loyalties, especially if it’s your child who has done the leaving.

For a divorced grandparent, there may be an added burden of guilt that they are responsible by example for the failure of a

child’s relationship.

Even those whose marriages have lasted may feel they could have done something to encourage a child’s marriage and avert a family disaster. All of these feelings take time to work through, but the best solution is to steer our energies in a more positive direction and be (quietly) supportive.”

Being supportive to grandchildren is an important priority. Children of parents going through a separation or divorce may feel confused, sad, even angry. They’re caught between two people they love. At this time, they need a sounding board, someone they trust to listen to their frustrations and their fears, someone to make them feel safe.

That role may be a difficult one for a grandparent, who undoubtedly has his own feelings of fear, grief and divided loyalties. The challenge is to be the sounding board and to refrain from laying blame on either parent. Children need reassurance that they didn’t

cause the breakup. More than anything, they need the stability of a warm relationship they can count on and where they feel safe.

Ben and Elizabeth from Tuam had their grandchildren move in with them for four weeks while their son and daughter-in-law worked through custody issues, financial arrangements and the division of property. “It was a challenging time for us,” Ben says. “We had to work hard to separate our feelings and set them aside to reassure the children and provide them with a sense that they wouldn’t be deserted.” While it was difficult for Ben and Elizabeth, this timeout for their grandchildren gave them a sense of security and a safe place with people they knew were “on their side.”

Grandparents may not be able to put the family back together the way it was, but they can play a crucial role in providing stability and helping the family, particularly the children, in their transition to a new family structure.

art of the attraction of travelling is being far away from where you live, but sometimes we forget to explore the things on our doorstep.

After living in Sligo for more than tfifteen years, it has only

been in the last couple of years that I’ve started to love living in Sligo. Before that, I thought Dublin or London was the epicentre of the universe and the only place I belonged. Now I’m open to call anywhere my

home and to contradict my former self – I think the west of Ireland is a beautiful place to reside.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes A part of appreciating what’s on your doorstep is looking at it with new eyes; learn its history, unearth the beaten path, and look for its quirky features.

Take for example my humble abode – Sligo. it is world reknowned for its trad music, the pubs are buzzing with the sound of fiddles and accordians most nights of the week. People travel from near and far to sample this each year.

Sligo is also probably unique in the fact that it has three or four first class beaches within 10 mins of the main thorough fare. Lakes and natural woodlands also add to the charm of Yeats county.

Mayo is also a county that is rich with natural beauty. From its rugged coastline to the peaks of Croagh Patrick there is

something for everyone here, be you young or not so young.

Achill Island is a must see, as is Westport or Louisbourgh. Or maybe you might like to relax while fishing te river Moy. The Bonniconlon show and the ballina salmon festivcal are

ewvents not to be missed.

If like many you are staying at home this summer do make sure to get to as many local festivals as you can because at the end of the day these are the ones that you will enjoy most

Should men over 50 wear denims?

he story of jeans begins in the city of Genoa, in Italy, famous for its cotton corduroy, during the republic of Genoa, the jeans were exported by sailors of Genoa throughout Europe. In the French city of Nimes weavers tried to reproduce the fabric exactly but without success. However as they persisted they developed another fabric that became known as denim, literally: de Nimes.

It wasn't till the end of the nineteenth century did jeans arrive in the USA. A young man named Levi Strauss emigrated from Germany in 1851 to New York to join his brother who had a dry goods store. Then in 1853 he moved to San Francisco to establish his own business.

Then in 1872 Jacob Davis, a tailor who frequently purchased cloth from Levi Strauss, wrote him to join him in getting a patent to sell clothing re-enforced with rivets. This was to strengthen points of stress such as pocket corner and at the bottom of the fly.

Hence on May 20, 1873, they received a patent and the birth of Blue Jeans took place.

As time passed the practical work wear took on a more fashionable role and became associated with different generations for different reasons, for instance in the 1950s James Dean popularized them in a movie” Rebel without a Cause”, wearing them became a symbol of youthful rebellion. Because of this they were banned in theatres, restaurants and schools.

Then in the 1960s the wearing of jeans became more acceptable as did everything else, and then by the 1970s they became a general fashion throughout the world let alone the U.S.A. In just reflecting on this history, it’s incredible how one particular item of clothing has lasted and endured to become a staple in nearly everyone’s

Down through the years I remember so many different styles from flares, bootcut, regular skinny, parallels, and added to that the amount of different washes, like dark wash, light wash, mid wash, indigo, snow wash and on and on.

Also there has been many creative versions some with rips and tears, embroidered patches, intricate coloured stitching, leather patches.

However all of this strolling down memory lane doesn’t tackle the subject of denim and the mature man.

The age old question is should men over 50 wear denims?

I reply with a resounding YES!!! Simply because it is still a practical item of clothing, as well as that it can still look well with dressy shirts, polos, t-shirts.

The Bands of our Showband Era

here were hundreds of them. Irish bands of every size, description and musical genre travelling the roads and borheens of Ireland. They travelled the length and breadth of the country from the 1950's through the mid 1980's. Although "officially" the term showband was coined in the late fifties and was used to describe bands that played a wide variety of music and usually included a "show" during the night, the term was gradually applied to all the bands that played in the 1960's. As the

Irish music scene splintered in the late sixties into pop, country bands, the term was dropped but we still find it the best overall description of the bands of the "ballroom" era. In the early days, they travelled in whatever they could find...bread vans, hearses, and even cars (roof racks and all). In later years, many (if not most) of them travelled in converted Ford Transit vans (like the one pictured right) that were normally used for delivery services.

After a couple of windows were popped into the centre panels, a

row or two of old airplane seats were installed and the band was ready to travel "in style." Although style was a matter of opinion...if you're stuck in the back of a van on a cold and rainy winter's night, it may seem like "a long way to Tipperary," but it's even further to Castletownbere, Co. Cork!

It will be impossible to list all the bands that played the dance halls, ballrooms, marquees, parochial halls, community centres, hotels, and town halls across Ireland but each month we are

he story of one of Ireland's greatest showbands, The Capitol, really starts in 1958 when James "Butch" Moore, a printing apprentice by day, left the Melochords (a band he had formed in the mid 1950's) and joined the popular Dublin band, The Blue Clavons. At a time when many of the bands that would populate the showband boom were actually resident bands for a specific ballroom (and playing semiprofessionally), the Clavons were setting attendance records at the Olympic Ballroom in Dublin. It was during this period that Butch first met Des Kelly at a gig in Galway.

Down in Galway, in the early 50's, brothers Des and Johnny Kelly joined with sister, Bernie and other local musicians to form the Quicksilver Dance Band. The lineup included Michael Costello, Joe Morris, Joe Killarney and Bridie Carrick. (Christy Dooley, Mickey Devaney and Frank O'Brien would also play with the band at Page 24 Mature Living June 2013

different times).

In 1959, having learned his craft with the Quicksilver Dance Band, Des moved to Dublin in the middle of his college studies to complete an agricultural degree at UCD and the Quicksilvers were disbanded. In Dublin, Des met Paul Sweeney (trumpet) and Eamonn Monaghan (piano) and together with drummer Tommy McNamara, they started gigging around town as the Claddagh Quartet. That summer, Paul and Eamonn went to Galway and together with former members of The Quicksilver Band (Johnny Kelly, Christy Dooley, and Mickey Devaney), played the area as The Des Kelly Band.

When the lads returned to Dublin to continue their studies, they were spotted by manager Tom Doherty (brother of Jim) who convinced them they should form a showband. Tom like the Royal's idea of using the name of a theatre and the fact that the name didn't have too many letters for posters and publicity materials. Starting first as a semi pro outfit (needing to continue their studies)

the band drafted Eddie Ryan (sax) and Pat Loughman (trombone).

Meanwhile, in 1960, Butch was recommended to the Billy Carter Band (resident in the National Ballroom) and he promptly left the Blue Clavons and joined Billy, further honing his skills both on guitar and as a singer.

Des wanted Jimmy Hogan (guitar) from the Clavons to join their band, but unfortunately, Jimmy had to play out his time with the band so Galway man Joe Dolan stood in on guitar for a couple of months. Des' brother, Johnny, came up from Galway to join the band and Pat Loughman (trombone), Paul Sweeney (trumpet), and Eddie Ryan (sax) filled out the lineup. Shortly thereafter, Des recruited Butch from the Billy Carter band as well and the Capitol were ready to hit the road on a semi pro basis.

In a 1968 Spotlight article, leader Des Kelly said, "...we had another long talk and we decided it was either stop being musicians and get down to serious study or give up the idea of a university education and turn professional." In June, 1961, after playing around Dublin, the band decided to go professional with Jim Doherty (brother of Miami manager Tom) as their manager. However, Loughman and Ryan decided to stay with their day jobs and were replaced by Don Long of Cork (formerly with the Donie Collins Band) on trombone and Paddy Cole (of the Maurice Lynch Band) from Castleblaney on sax.

Now set, the band took the nation by storm, soon drawing crowds that rivaled The Royal and Clipper Carlton. In 1961, they did their first tour of the United States during the Lent season when the Irish ballrooms closed down. In 1963, they became the first showband to appear on RTE Television when they joined Sligo based singer, Maisie McDaniel (who would be recruited by The Nevada in 1965 but never played because of an injury) on he half hour show.

In 1963, after the band's second trip to the United States, Paul Sweeney quit to return to his architectural studies and was replaced by Corkman, Bram McCarthy, who was recommended by Don Long. In late 1963, following the success of the Royal Showband's single, Come Down The Mountain Katy Daly (the first single by a showband), the Capitol recorded young songwriter, Phil Coulter's tune, Foolin' Time, which reached number 3 in the Irish charts in February, 1964. They followed with another

Coulter song, I Missed You. Also in May, 1964 the Capitol became the first showband to appear on the very popular Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

In 1965, Butch was chosen as Ireland's first representative in the Eurovision Song Contest which was held in Naples, Italy. The entry, Walking The Streets In The Rain, became his third consecutive Irish Number One, although Ireland finished a respectable sixth in the Eurovision voting. With the success at Eurovision, the Capitol became even more popular and outdrew even the Royal in some venues.

1965 and 1966 were banner years for the band.

The crowds were huge, the money was fantastic and the band lived it up at home and abroad.

Eventually though, in September 1966, Butch Moore was drawn away from the band by a lucrative offer. He was offered a solo career which would include stints in Las Vegas, but it never materialized. By 1967, Butch was playing the fledgling cabaret circuit in Ireland with a trio featuring his brother, Des Moore on guitar. After two years though, he decided to emigrate to the United States where he rebuilt his career and lived until his death in 2001.

Meanwhile, the Capitol was decimated.

Although comprised of the country's top musical talent, Butch had been the main attraction and his departure left a gaping hole. At one point Johnny McEvoy was rumoured to be a possible replacement, but in the end Butch was replaced by Noel McNeil. However, Noel's time with the band was limited as he was not happy traveling. In an article in Spotlight magazine Jim Hand, the band's manager in the late sixties, said Noel was joining Tommy O'Brien's band in Clery's Ballroom. Noel was replaced by John Drummond in July, 1967.

John from Scotland, was also an excellent musician who had been doing session work in London and would eventually become one of the top session musicians in Ireland. Initially he played rhythm guitar and was the lead vocalist.

Also in 1967, Des tried his hand at recording with a country number, The Streets of Baltimore...it went to Number 3 in the Irish Charts. Later the same year, brother Johnny had a massive hit with Black Velvet Band, which stayed in the Irish charts for 23 weeks and hit number one in June. The hit records helped keep the band in the public eye and they continued to draw well.

In late 1967, the band did a ten day tour of the

planning to feature a band from the west with the help of Gerry Gallagher and www.irish-showbands.com . Apart from a few who enjoy near mythical status (such as the Royal Showband and a handful of others), most bands came together, played for a few years and then either reinvented themselves, changed their name, or just disappeared, their members either returning to civilian life, or scattering to two or three new bands.

For such a small country, it is difficult to comprehend the sheer

United States without Johnny who had to stay in Ireland for a hernia operation. In his place Frank Darcy from Louth stepped in on drums. Also in late 1967 John Drummond announced he was applying for Irish citizenship. In November, 1967 an article in Spotlight announced that Des was leaving the band temporarily due to a bout of pneumonia which had continued to bothered him since August. It was reported that he would return

by Christmas.

In 1969, Des came down with another bad case of pneumonia from which he took a long time to recover and he decided to call it quits, moving into management. In February, 1969, the band headed off to Canada for a six week tour, presumably for the Lent break in Irish Halls. Sometime in mid 69 John Drummond moved over to play bass. Also, in an article in Spotlight on 5th September, 1969 the band announced John was leaving to take an A&R job with Eamonn Andrews Studios. The article also said he would be staying with the band until a new lead singer was found.

A few weeks later the band announced the addition of Tony Leary as lead vocalist, Mike Dalton as the new bass player and Mickey O'Neill on drums. At the same time Don Long left the band and emigrated to Manchester and Johnny Kelly left to manage the new Virginians band which featured Charlie Arkin and Basil Hendricks, two top country musicians. The lineup was rounded out with Paddy, Eamonn, Bram and Jimmy.

In late January, 1970, it was reported in Spotlight that Tony O'Leary had been selected to sing in the National Song Contest after Joe Dolan passed on the opportunity. Along with Tony Kenny, they were the only showband singer sin the contest that year. Sadly for both of them, it was also the year Dana sang "All Kinds of Everything" which won the Eurovision, giving Ireland its first win in just its sixth year taking part in the contest.

In early 1970, Jimmy Hogan and Eamonn Monaghan decided to form their own band called the Cabaret All Stars and left the ballroom circuit.

Within a short time, they changed the name to the Spotlights Banjo Band (or the Spotlights). In 1970, they released several singles including "Maguerite" and "Smokey Hollow," but did not have much success. The other members of the four piece group were Mike Short (bass) and Kevin Brady (drums).

The final phase of the Capitol included none of the original members...only Paddy Cole and Bram McCarthy remained from the band's heyday. The band replaced Jimmy with Frank Murray on guitar and played for the best part of a year as a six piece. However, in November, 1970, they added

Stan Burns from Sligo (sax-formerly with Jack Ruane's Band) to beef up their sound. In fact at the time, Bram McCarthy was quoted in Spotlight as saying once in a while the relief group had more members than the Capitol.

Although still a great band musically, the magic of the Capitol was gone. Throughout 1970 and into 1971, the band played to ever smaller crowds.

Finally, Paddy and Mickey were offered jobs in Brendan Bowyer's Big Eight band which played much of the year in Las Vegas. They stayed in Ireland rehearsing while the rest of the Capitol went on an extended tour of Canada. Mickey was replaced by Eamonn Donnelly who had previously been with The Mexicans. By November 1971, the band broke up with Tony O'Leary, Bram McCarthy and Mike Dalton joining a revamped Smokey Mountain Ramblers.

In 1984, they reunited with Butch Moore for a month long Irish tour in Ireland which was well received, but Butch returned to the States and opened a pub in Massachusetts. Paddy Cole had gone on to form the Paddy Cole Superstars and Des Kelly went back into band management.

Sadly, three of the original members of the Capitol have passed away. Butch Moore died in the States in 2001, Bram McCarthy sadly died at a very young age in 1987 and Johnny Kelly also passed away in 1987. Paddy Cole continues to play to this day and has done very well as one of the legends of the showband era. In October 2007, Don Long passed away. Oroginal guitarist Joe Dolan passed away in 2008.

The rest of the band continued to play on and off, mostly in local and casual bands. Stan Burns went on to become one of the top surfers in Ireland in the 1970's as well as an Irish basketball International, today he lives in County Leitrim and still plays with his own jazz quartet.

Overall, the Capitol had a major impact on the showband era in Ireland. To this day, their talent and popularity are legendary. However, unlike many other showbands, when the scene changed, they did not adapt and while others like the Nevada, Miami, and Plattermen continued to play well into the 1980's, the Capitol barely made it out of the 1960's...one of the casualties of the changing music scene in Ireland.

Butch Moore came home to Ireland in October, 2000 to appear with the Showband Show's "Hucklebuckin Again Tour" along with Brendan Bowyer and Roly Daniels. The Bands of our Showband Era

here were hundreds of them. Irish bands of every size, description and musical genre travelling the roads and borheens of Ireland. They travelled the length and breadth of the country from the 1950's through the mid 1980's. Although "officially" the term showband was coined in the late fifties and was used to describe bands that played a wide variety of music and usually included a "show" during the night, the term was gradually applied to all the bands that played in the 1960's. As the

Irish music scene splintered in the late sixties into pop, country bands, the term was dropped but we still find it the best overall description of the bands of the "ballroom" era. In the early days, they travelled in whatever they could find...bread vans, hearses, and even cars (roof racks and all). In later years, many (if not most) of them travelled in converted Ford Transit vans (like the one pictured right) that were normally used for delivery services.

After a couple of windows were popped into the centre panels, a

row or two of old airplane seats were installed and the band was ready to travel "in style." Although style was a matter of opinion...if you're stuck in the back of a van on a cold and rainy winter's night, it may seem like "a long way to Tipperary," but it's even further to Castletownbere, Co. Cork!

It will be impossible to list all the bands that played the dance halls, ballrooms, marquees, parochial halls, community centres, hotels, and town halls across Ireland but each month we are

he story of one of Ireland's greatest showbands, The Capitol, really starts in 1958 when James "Butch" Moore, a printing apprentice by day, left the Melochords (a band he had formed in the mid 1950's) and joined the popular Dublin band, The Blue Clavons. At a time when many of the bands that would populate the showband boom were actually resident bands for a specific ballroom (and playing semiprofessionally), the Clavons were setting attendance records at the Olympic Ballroom in Dublin. It was during this period that Butch first met Des Kelly at a gig in Galway.

Down in Galway, in the early 50's, brothers Des and Johnny Kelly joined with sister, Bernie and other local musicians to form the Quicksilver Dance Band. The lineup included Michael Costello, Joe Morris, Joe Killarney and Bridie Carrick. (Christy Dooley, Mickey Devaney and Frank O'Brien would also play with the band at Page 24 Mature Living June 2013

different times).

In 1959, having learned his craft with the Quicksilver Dance Band, Des moved to Dublin in the middle of his college studies to complete an agricultural degree at UCD and the Quicksilvers were disbanded. In Dublin, Des met Paul Sweeney (trumpet) and Eamonn Monaghan (piano) and together with drummer Tommy McNamara, they started gigging around town as the Claddagh Quartet. That summer, Paul and Eamonn went to Galway and together with former members of The Quicksilver Band (Johnny Kelly, Christy Dooley, and Mickey Devaney), played the area as The Des Kelly Band.

When the lads returned to Dublin to continue their studies, they were spotted by manager Tom Doherty (brother of Jim) who convinced them they should form a showband. Tom like the Royal's idea of using the name of a theatre and the fact that the name didn't have too many letters for posters and publicity materials. Starting first as a semi pro outfit (needing to continue their studies)

the band drafted Eddie Ryan (sax) and Pat Loughman (trombone).

Meanwhile, in 1960, Butch was recommended to the Billy Carter Band (resident in the National Ballroom) and he promptly left the Blue Clavons and joined Billy, further honing his skills both on guitar and as a singer.

Des wanted Jimmy Hogan (guitar) from the Clavons to join their band, but unfortunately, Jimmy had to play out his time with the band so Galway man Joe Dolan stood in on guitar for a couple of months. Des' brother, Johnny, came up from Galway to join the band and Pat Loughman (trombone), Paul Sweeney (trumpet), and Eddie Ryan (sax) filled out the lineup. Shortly thereafter, Des recruited Butch from the Billy Carter band as well and the Capitol were ready to hit the road on a semi pro basis.

In a 1968 Spotlight article, leader Des Kelly said, "...we had another long talk and we decided it was either stop being musicians and get down to serious study or give up the idea of a university education and turn professional." In June, 1961, after playing around Dublin, the band decided to go professional with Jim Doherty (brother of Miami manager Tom) as their manager. However, Loughman and Ryan decided to stay with their day jobs and were replaced by Don Long of Cork (formerly with the Donie Collins Band) on trombone and Paddy Cole (of the Maurice Lynch Band) from Castleblaney on sax.

Now set, the band took the nation by storm, soon drawing crowds that rivaled The Royal and Clipper Carlton. In 1961, they did their first tour of the United States during the Lent season when the Irish ballrooms closed down. In 1963, they became the first showband to appear on RTE Television when they joined Sligo based singer, Maisie McDaniel (who would be recruited by The Nevada in 1965 but never played because of an injury) on he half hour show.

In 1963, after the band's second trip to the United States, Paul Sweeney quit to return to his architectural studies and was replaced by Corkman, Bram McCarthy, who was recommended by Don Long. In late 1963, following the success of the Royal Showband's single, Come Down The Mountain Katy Daly (the first single by a showband), the Capitol recorded young songwriter, Phil Coulter's tune, Foolin' Time, which reached number 3 in the Irish charts in February, 1964. They followed with another

Coulter song, I Missed You. Also in May, 1964 the Capitol became the first showband to appear on the very popular Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

In 1965, Butch was chosen as Ireland's first representative in the Eurovision Song Contest which was held in Naples, Italy. The entry, Walking The Streets In The Rain, became his third consecutive Irish Number One, although Ireland finished a respectable sixth in the Eurovision voting. With the success at Eurovision, the Capitol became even more popular and outdrew even the Royal in some venues.

1965 and 1966 were banner years for the band.

The crowds were huge, the money was fantastic and the band lived it up at home and abroad.

Eventually though, in September 1966, Butch Moore was drawn away from the band by a lucrative offer. He was offered a solo career which would include stints in Las Vegas, but it never materialized. By 1967, Butch was playing the fledgling cabaret circuit in Ireland with a trio featuring his brother, Des Moore on guitar. After two years though, he decided to emigrate to the United States where he rebuilt his career and lived until his death in 2001.

Meanwhile, the Capitol was decimated.

Although comprised of the country's top musical talent, Butch had been the main attraction and his departure left a gaping hole. At one point Johnny McEvoy was rumoured to be a possible replacement, but in the end Butch was replaced by Noel McNeil. However, Noel's time with the band was limited as he was not happy traveling. In an article in Spotlight magazine Jim Hand, the band's manager in the late sixties, said Noel was joining Tommy O'Brien's band in Clery's Ballroom. Noel was replaced by John Drummond in July, 1967.

John from Scotland, was also an excellent musician who had been doing session work in London and would eventually become one of the top session musicians in Ireland. Initially he played rhythm guitar and was the lead vocalist.

Also in 1967, Des tried his hand at recording with a country number, The Streets of Baltimore...it went to Number 3 in the Irish Charts. Later the same year, brother Johnny had a massive hit with Black Velvet Band, which stayed in the Irish charts for 23 weeks and hit number one in June. The hit records helped keep the band in the public eye and they continued to draw well.

In late 1967, the band did a ten day tour of the

Apart from a few who enjoy near mythical status (such as the Royal Showband and a handful of others), most bands came together, played for a few years and then either reinvented themselves, changed their name, or just disappeared, their members either returning to civilian life, or scattering to two or three new bands.

For such a small country, it is difficult to comprehend the sheer

United States without Johnny who had to stay in Ireland for a hernia operation. In his place Frank Darcy from Louth stepped in on drums. Also in late 1967 John Drummond announced he was applying for Irish citizenship. In November, 1967 an article in Spotlight announced that Des was leaving the band temporarily due to a bout of pneumonia which had continued to bothered him since August. It was reported that he would return

by Christmas.

In 1969, Des came down with another bad case of pneumonia from which he took a long time to recover and he decided to call it quits, moving into management. In February, 1969, the band headed off to Canada for a six week tour, presumably for the Lent break in Irish Halls. Sometime in mid 69 John Drummond moved over to play bass. Also, in an article in Spotlight on 5th September, 1969 the band announced John was leaving to take an A&R job with Eamonn Andrews Studios. The article also said he would be staying with the band until a new lead singer was found.

A few weeks later the band announced the addition of Tony Leary as lead vocalist, Mike Dalton as the new bass player and Mickey O'Neill on drums. At the same time Don Long left the band and emigrated to Manchester and Johnny Kelly left to manage the new Virginians band which featured Charlie Arkin and Basil Hendricks, two top country musicians. The lineup was rounded out with Paddy, Eamonn, Bram and Jimmy.

In late January, 1970, it was reported in Spotlight that Tony O'Leary had been selected to sing in the National Song Contest after Joe Dolan passed on the opportunity. Along with Tony Kenny, they were the only showband singer sin the contest that year. Sadly for both of them, it was also the year Dana sang "All Kinds of Everything" which won the Eurovision, giving Ireland its first win in just its sixth year taking part in the contest.

In early 1970, Jimmy Hogan and Eamonn Monaghan decided to form their own band called the Cabaret All Stars and left the ballroom circuit.

Within a short time, they changed the name to the Spotlights Banjo Band (or the Spotlights). In 1970, they released several singles including "Maguerite" and "Smokey Hollow," but did not have much success. The other members of the four piece group were Mike Short (bass) and Kevin Brady (drums).

The final phase of the Capitol included none of the original members...only Paddy Cole and Bram McCarthy remained from the band's heyday. The band replaced Jimmy with Frank Murray on guitar and played for the best part of a year as a six piece. However, in November, 1970, they added

Stan Burns from Sligo (sax-formerly with Jack Ruane's Band) to beef up their sound. In fact at the time, Bram McCarthy was quoted in Spotlight as saying once in a while the relief group had more members than the Capitol.

Although still a great band musically, the magic of the Capitol was gone. Throughout 1970 and into 1971, the band played to ever smaller crowds.

Finally, Paddy and Mickey were offered jobs in Brendan Bowyer's Big Eight band which played much of the year in Las Vegas. They stayed in Ireland rehearsing while the rest of the Capitol went on an extended tour of Canada. Mickey was replaced by Eamonn Donnelly who had previously been with The Mexicans. By November 1971, the band broke up with Tony O'Leary, Bram McCarthy and Mike Dalton joining a revamped Smokey Mountain Ramblers.

In 1984, they reunited with Butch Moore for a month long Irish tour in Ireland which was well received, but Butch returned to the States and opened a pub in Massachusetts. Paddy Cole had gone on to form the Paddy Cole Superstars and Des Kelly went back into band management.

Sadly, three of the original members of the Capitol have passed away. Butch Moore died in the States in 2001, Bram McCarthy sadly died at a very young age in 1987 and Johnny Kelly also passed away in 1987. Paddy Cole continues to play to this day and has done very well as one of the legends of the showband era. In October 2007, Don Long passed away. Oroginal guitarist Joe Dolan passed away in 2008.

The rest of the band continued to play on and off, mostly in local and casual bands. Stan Burns went on to become one of the top surfers in Ireland in the 1970's as well as an Irish basketball International, today he lives in County Leitrim and still plays with his own jazz quartet.

Overall, the Capitol had a major impact on the showband era in Ireland. To this day, their talent and popularity are legendary. However, unlike many other showbands, when the scene changed, they did not adapt and while others like the Nevada, Miami, and Plattermen continued to play well into the 1980's, the Capitol barely made it out of the 1960's...one of the casualties of the changing music scene in Ireland.

Butch Moore came home to Ireland in October, 2000 to appear with the Showband Show's "Hucklebuckin Again Tour" along with Brendan Bowyer and Roly Daniels. E

ver heard of “geographic arbitrage”? Here’s how it can work for your retirement: you earn a pension or retirement income in a country like Ireland that has a high cost of living and then put those hard-earned euros to good use in a country with a much lower cost of living. The result? Retiring abroad means you can you enjoy a better quality of life for less cash — plus you get to enjoy a new culture and a new way of life.

Not sure where to look? There are many lists of top destinations out there — we’ve rounded up some of the favourites.

Panama You’ll love it for its sunny climate and the scenery, but financial experts love it for its lower cost of living and fair tax policies for foreigners — something you won’t find everywhere. Panama also has easier entry requirements than many countries in the region, plus a well-developed infrastructure of roads and communications. The

local currency is based on the U.S. dollar, and health care services are good in its main cities. It’s not as cheap as other retirement havens, but you get to live in paradise for €1150 to €1600 month.

But the benefits don’t stop there: as a retiree, you’ll find generous discounts of between 15 per cent and 50 per cent on things such as hotels,

restaurants, movies and many professional services. If your home in Panama is your only residence, you won’t pay property taxes either. (For more information, see PanamaInfo.com.)

Ecuador Rural areas may be lacking in health care and other essential infrastructure, but experts note

the major cities are affordable and offer many amenities — such as hospitals equivalent to what you’ll find in Canada. Expatfriendly Cuenca often gets the nod over pricier Quito, plus you don’t have to worry about adjusting to the altitude.

Some sources say you can live well for as little as €650/month in Ecuador, and you’d be hard pressed to spend €1100 even with luxuries thrown in. Like Panama, there are already established expat communities and generous discounts to be had. If your Spanish is rusty at first, don’t worry — English is spoken throughout parts of the country. What other Central and South American destinations made the list? Belize often gets the nod because its official language is English. Lush, green Costa Rica is another popular choice as is Granada, Nicaragua.

Mexico also appears on many lists, but you’ll want to choose your location very carefully to avoid crime. Head further south and you can find a reasonable cost of living in Uruguay or Argentina.

Southwest France Mais oui! But we’re not talking about living the high life in Paris or kicking back in Provence. Step outside the major cities and you’ll find an affordable cost of living, say experts. For example, AARP recommends the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the Southwest — think medieval

towns and castles, vineyards, rocky hills and the Mediterranean seashore. It’s where you’ll find Nimes (with its Roman ruins) and stylish Perpignan. With access to the high-speed train service in Montpellier, you can take a jaunt to Paris for the weekend.

The cost of living is higher than other retirement destinations — AARP estimates a yearly budget of €20,000 — but France does have the best health care system in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

Italy Does your idea of an affordable retirement include noshing on world-renowned cuisine and touring local wineries? As with France, you’ll want to steer clear of major cities and hotspots like Umbria and Tuscany– but AARP notes a “comfortable life” can be had in the Le Marche region for just €15,500 – €20,000.

Naturally, the cultural and artistic offerings are more modest than you would find in Florence or Rome, but the area has its fair share of art and architecture — including the walled city of Urbino.

Got your heart set on Europe?

Some other top spots getting the nod from experts include Cascais, Portugal and Costa del Sol, Spain. Don’t be afraid to venture farther east. Expats are discovering destinations such as Tallinn, Estonia and Croatia as well.

What to know if you’re considering it

Languedoc-Roussillon - Southwest France Thailand It’s a long way from home, but a chance to embrace a different culture and language — not to mention some top-notch eateries. According to some estimates, a monthly budget of €750 to €950 will easily cover good housing, meals out, health care, entertainment and a variety of other services. Some parts of the country still experience unrest, but experts say much of the country is peaceful as well as beautiful.

If the hustle and bustle of Bangkok - and the higher prices — isn’t your taste, experts suggest Chiang Man as a budgetfriendly alternative. Hua Hin is more of a traditional retirement haven with golf courses and outlet malls and might be a good place to start if you’re worried about culture shock.

Malaysia Concerned about foreign residency requirements? Experts

say they won’t be a problem in Malaysia thanks to initiatives aimed at bringing in expats.

Here, income from foreign sources is also tax-free, and buying property is permitted. It’s the easiest place in Asia to achieve permanent residency, but you’ll want to take a closer look at local laws. Conservative dress and discrete behaviour are expected, and homosexual activity is illegal, according to the Canadian government website.

Experts say destinations like Kuala Lumpur are “moderately priced” (i.e. not as cheap as other retirement havens) but it is fairly easy to settle in.

Infrastructure and services are in place to cater to retirees, and some sources note that many locals are eager to practice their English with newcomers.

What other Asian destinations should you consider? Experts also like nearby Bali, Indonesia as well as the Philippines.

No doubt a lot of your attention will be on cost of living, but there is a lot more to consider. For example: • Local laws and customs. Are you comfortable living within the laws and expectations of your new home?

• Visa and residency requirements. How easy is it to obtain a visa or permanent residency? The rules and procedures are different for each country.

• Rules regarding property ownership. In some places, you can own a condo but not land while other countries don’t have restrictions on purchases.

• The community. Do you want

• Access to financial services.

Opening a new bank account and investing may not be as easy as you think, and there could be heavy fees involved.

• Health care. What is the quality of care offered and how do you pay for it? In many places, you’ll have to pay upfront for services, even if they are a fraction of the cost. Also, experts warn health insurance can be expensive if you’re over a certain age.

• Travel and communications.

How much will it cost to keep in touch with the family and friends you’re leaving behind?

to live among your fellow expats or live like a local?

Expat areas are more expensive, but you’ll be living among people who speak your language and share your culture.

• Pension. Can you receive your government benefits in the local currency? Is there an option to join the country’s social security program?

• Taxes. What taxes will you have to pay, and to whom? You could end up paying in two different countries — and face high duties, tariffs, withholding taxes and consumption taxes in some areas. You’ll also want to know about estates taxes, just in case.

• Fluctuating currency exchange rates. Exchange rates are going to fluctuate.

Have you budgeted for travel to visit loved ones?

Also, remember that living in a country is very different than vacationing. Many experts recommend a “test drive” first — that is, an extended stay at your destination outside tourist areas, including some offseason time so you can get a feel for costs, amenities, climate, pace of living and culture.

What’s cooking with With Darren McDermott of The Beach bar, Aughris Head

Linguine al Granchio Linguini with crab

Serves 10 2 large live male crabs, about 2-3 kg (4.1/2-6.1/2 lbs) total weight 3 fresh red chillies, seeded and finely chopped 3 handfuls of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped Juice of 4 lemons 3 garlic cloves, peeled and ground to a paste with a little salt 250ml (8fl oz) olive oil 500g (18oz) linguine Sea salt and freshly ground pepper extra virgin olive oil Get the fish monger to kill the crabs for you. In a saucepan large enough to hold both, bring enough water to the boil to cover the crabs. Boil gently for 20 mins, then remove from

the water and leave to cool.

Remove the claws and legs.

Break the bodies open carefully. Remove the brown meat from inside the shell and transfer along with any juices to a bowl. Remove the white meat from the claws and legs and add to the brown meat in the bowl. Mix together.

Add the chilli and most of the chopped parsley, the lemon juice and crushed garlic to the crab mixture. Stir in the olive oil. The sauce should be quite liquid.

Cook the linguine in a generous amount of boiling salted water then drain throughly. Stir into the crab sauce, but do not reheat.

Serve sprinkled with the remaining chopped parsley and a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil.

Shank of lamb with root vegetables 6 lamb shanks 3 garlic cloves, chopped Thyme and rosemary 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium onions 1kg potatoes 500g large carrots 500g parsnips 500g leeks 250ml of lamb stock salt and freshly ground pepper Make a few incisions in each lamb shank and insert garlic, thyme and rosemary into each one.

Massage the olive oil over the lamb. Place in a small roasting tin and season with salt and pepper. Roast in a hot oven (220°C/Gas mark 7).

Meanwhile, slice the

onions, cut the potoes into fairly thick (5mm) slices and the carrots, parsnips and leeks into 2cm chunks. Mix them all together in a bowl and season with salt, pepper and a bit more garlic.

Gently heat up the stock.

When the lamb has been roasting for about 30mins, remove from the oven and lift out of the tin. Add all the vegetables to the tin and toss them in the juices.

Add the stock. Place the lamb shanks on a roasting rack above the vegetables. Roast at a slightly reduced temperature (190°C/ Gas mark 5) for about an hour more and serve.

Seniors who adopt senior pets often stay in better shape Pet ownership can open up a whole new world for senior citizens. By adopting older pets, seniors get companionship without housebreaking or training.

L

ife occurs in stages. And as we move from infancy to adulthood – and eventually into our senior years – our needs and wants change. For pet lovers, the joy and satisfaction that comes from owning a pet rarely weakens with the passing of years. The type of pet they desire, however, may be subject to change as living arrangements or health conditions evolve.

Today, a growing number of seniors are stepping forward to adopt older dogs and cats. Not interested in taking on the challenge of housebreaking and training a puppy or keeping a

kitten out of mischief, seniors would rather have a pet that has an established personality and knows the rules about good behavior. These adoptions are a win for the senior, who benefits from the companionship of a pet.

A 1990 UCLA study showed that pet ownership could actually improve overall health and reduce the time a senior individual spends in a doctor’s office. alking your dog at least two times a day can be good for you and your pet. Walks can help keep hearts, lungs and circulatory systems working at their best.

n iPhone app is an application, typically developed by a company other than Apple, and designed to be used specifically on the iPhone or iPad. Apps work much like user-installed software on a computer and allow the phone to perform specific tasks that the user wants or needs. Users sometimes pay a small fee for the use of an app, which is downloaded directly to the phone. Apps helped make the iPhone and other smartphones a must-have tool for many people who want instant access to information.

Types of iPhone Apps There are hundreds of thousands of applications available, ranging from maps and entertainment guides to business and money management. Many companies have developed iPhone apps for marketing purposes, such as a grill manufacturer that provides recipes and grilling techniques, or musicians who create games that tie in with their latest album. Sleep habits have a tremendous impact on our day-to-day ability to function, how we age and even our longevity.

Consider this your wake-up call! carbohydrates, when sleepdeprived to help elevate levels of serotonin, the calming hormone, in the blood to reduce the feelings associated with elevated cortisol, explains Breus. “For the 45-plus age group, who may be carrying extra weight due to their slowing metabolism, adding the side effects of insufficient sleep is a recipe for weight disaster,” he cautions. “If you’re interested in controlling or losing weight, get a good night’s sleep.”

The science of sleep Each night, we pass through five stages of sleep. Our night begins with drifting off in stage one, light sleep in stage two, deeper sleep in stages three and four and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in stage five. Your body cycles through all five stages four or five times a night, with each full cycle lasting approximately 90 to 110 minutes. Stages three and four are the most physically restorative, when your body releases growth hormones and repairs the day’s muscular damage. In REM sleep, your mind restores itself, moving information from short- to longterm memory and organizing thoughts.

Older adults may spend less time in the more restorative stages of sleep (stages three and four) and more time in lighter sleep (stage one and two), explains Dr. Michael Breus, author of The Sleep Doctor’s Diet Plan: Lose Weight Through Better Sleep (www.thesleepdoctor.com). This is due to a complex blend of lifestyle and biological changes.

“We know that as we age, stage three and four sleep decreases in power,” adds Breus. “The brainwaves of an 18-year-old during stages three and four are more powerful than those of a 45- or 65-year-old.”

Longevity “Data now shows that if you get less than five hours or more

than 10 hours of sleep, there’s a double mortality rate,” says Breus.

“Why it is that mortality goes up isn’t clear,” says Dr. Gerald Simkus, cardiac sciences program medical director, Fraser Health, Surrey, B.C. (www.fraserhealth.ca). “You may be sleeping too much because you are unwell or depressed, which are also related to increased mortality.”

What research does tell us is that sleep deprivation can double the chances of dying from a cardiovascular event since sleep deprivation, especially if it is due to sleep apnea, seems to increase blood pressure.

Surprisingly, too much sleep appears to be even more dangerous for us, more than doubling the likelihood of dying from other causes. Researchers think this is because the increased need for sleep is often a result of depression, pain or sleep disorders like narcolepsy.

“Though individuals vary greatly in their need for sleep, as a minimum, I never like to see my patients getting less than six hours, and on average I like to see seven to nine hours,” says Breus. But, he cautions, “quality of sleep, not just the quantity, matters. It’s better to get six hours of superior sleep, in which the majority of sleep is spent in stages three and four or REM sleep with fewer awakenings, over a restless eight or nine hours.”

Weight loss Lack of sleep disrupts hungerregulating hormones, which influence your weight. Sleep deprivation boosts levels of a hormone called ghrelin, which tells you when to eat, and suppresses the hormone leptin, which makes you feel full. Plus, the more sleep deprived you are, the higher your levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which increases appetite.

The human body will eat, specifically complex

Concentration and memory “Much of what we call aging – forgetfulness, not being as mentally focused – could actually be related to sleep deprivation,” explains Breus.

REM sleep appears to be critical for the organization and consolidation of memory, and as we age, we get less of it. In a catch-22, this is often due to the aging brain’s inability to produce REM sleep. Shorter sleep times could also be a contributing factor, though this is still unclear. We need quality sleep to maintain youthful mental faculties, Breus adds.

Heart health Getting more than seven hours of sleep may help prevent the accumulation of calcified plaques in the coronary

arteries, which is a predictor of future heart disease, explains Simkus. He points to findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association (2008) showing that people who get more than seven hours of sleep are less likely to have calcium clogging their arteries. Calcified arteries were found in 27 per cent of those who slept less than five hours a night, dropping to 11 per cent in those who slept five to seven hours, and just six per cent for those who slept more than seven hours a night.

Brain health “Sleep is essential for neuroplasticity, the continuous growth and reshaping of the brain’s networks and pathways throughout the aging process,” states Harvard University lecturer Dr. Alan Logan, coauthor with Mark Rubin and Philip Levy of Your Skin, Younger (www.sourcebooks.com).

Until recently, doctors believed that the brain stopped making new neural connections when the body stopped developing, usually in the early 20s. It turns out the brain makes new neurons well into your 80s.

“These brain-growing chemicals are alive and kicking when you are sleeping well,” says Logan.

“Sleep loss equals brain drain, plain and simple.”

Health Anti-aging “Sleep is a time for skin repair and rejuvenation,” says Logan. “Getting enough deep sleep will help your skin repair itself, while a consistent lack of sleep ages the skin.” Sleep allows skin to repair damage caused by stress, ultraviolet rays and other harmful environmental factors.

Hormones A change in sleep quality and duration can affect your melatonin secretion and circadian rhythm (the sleep-wake cycle), and vice versa.

“It’s not always clear which is the chicken and which is the egg,” says Dr. Jeffrey J. Lipsitz of Sleep Disorders Centre of Metropolitan Toronto.

Light exposure and body temperature may be factors in both cases. Melatonin is thought to help suppress the growth of some cancers in which hormones play a role. Night-shift workers may have a higher risk for these cancers because their melatonin levels are often lower. Statistics Canada reports that more than one quarter of Canadian workers have nontraditional work schedules. There are coping strategies, says Lipsitz.

“Focus on consistent bed and meal times, daytime sleep environment, even lighting in the workplace, so that after a while [you] begin to display a normal circadian rhythm,” he explains. “If you’re unable to fall asleep during the day, a prescribed short-acting sleeping medication may help.”

Gender gap Women need about 20 minutes more sleep a night than men due to their ability to multi-task, suggests current research from the U.K. conducted by Professor Jim Horne and his colleagues from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University. The researchers established that women are involved in decision-making and lateral thinking to a greater extent than men and this contributes to their need for more sleep. A man who has a complex job may also need more sleep – though probably still not as much as a woman, states Horne.

eeping the passion alive in a relationship is a good thing, according to researchers at Stony Brook University in New York.

They reviewed 17 studies of shortterm relationships among the younger set and 10 long-term relationship studies of middle-aged couples married for 10 years or more.

Published in the Review of General Psychology last year, the researchers reported that “long-term romantic love (with intensity, sexual interest and engagement but without the obsession element common in new relationships) appears to be a real phenomenon that may enhance individuals’ lives — positively associated with marital satisfaction, mental health and overall wellbeing.”

Carbs and Cognition

tudies show that consuming too many simple carbohydrates — table sugar, for example — increases the risk of dementia as we age.

Instead, we should be eating enough complex carbs,such as whole grains, to keep our brains in top shape.

“We need healthy or normal insulin function in the brain — it’s a component of learning and memory processing,” says Dr. Carol Greenwood, a senior scientist at Rotman Research Institute. But poor quality carbs can damage insulin metabolism, she says, promoting diabetes, cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

t’s a breakthrough in research on diet and health. For the first time, it’s been shown shown that a diet — the Mediterranean Diet — can be as effective as drugs in preventing heart attacks, strokes and deaths from cardiovascular disease.

The study in The New England Journal of Medicine found 30 per cent of these cardiovascular events can be prevented in people who switch to the Mediterranean Diet, which is rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables. The subjects were people at high risk of heart disease, and the evidence showed they could even drink wine with meals and eat chocolate.

Researchers followed 7500 people in Spain, half of whom were randomly assigned to follow a Mediterranean diet and the rest to follow the sort of standard low-fat diet that cardiologists often prescribe. The problem was the people in the low-fat group couldn’t stick to their diets so they ate more or less the same way that they always had. Those on the Mediterranean diet were able to stay with it and the results were so clear the trial was ended early because it was considered unethical to continue.. The magnitude of the diet’s benefits startled experts. The researchers were careful to say that while the diet clearly reduced heart disease for those at high risk for it, more research was needed to establish its benefits for people at low risk.

loom In the Park was a fantastic experience for Leitrim garden designer Leonie Cornelius. The Taoiseach Enda Kenny and President Michael Higgins both visited her show garden, "A Love Letter to the West", and it was all topped off with a silver gilt medal from the show. Now Leonie is asking for help from the local Sligo and Leitrim communities to rebuild the show garden in Five Mile Bourne next weekend (15/16 June). Rather

appropriately - 16th June is Bloomsday.

"This is my chance to give something back to the community", said Leonie Cornelius, "The garden is being rebuilt on council ground and will be open for everyone in the community to see it, just as I've always wanted it to be. I'd like to thank Councillor Michael Comiskey for all his help in securing the perfect location on the lake".

The biggest part of the garden build is the structural part

and that's where skilled help will be really valuable - experienced landscapers and carpenters in particular are asked to give time to the project if they can. Also needed are strong gardeners handy with a spade or shovel, and willing helpers.

"It's going to be really hard work", smiles Leonie, "But we're hoping it's going to be a bit of a "gardening party" too. We'll have some refreshments on hand and as much equipment as possible - but it would be great

A Love Letter to the West "A Love Letter to the West" is based on the beauty and spirit of the West. It is a modern yet stylishly natural garden, with a dramatic scorched timber garden hut and beautiful natural planting. At Bloom the garden included a purpose built pond, but back home in Leitrim it will be located right on the lake edge, seamlessly settling into the landscape.

All of the plants used in the garden were Irish grown, some by Leonie herself. After the tortures and stresses of being part of a show garden, most of them will need to be replaced for the new location. A show garden uses massive amounts of plants, set very close together, as they must look perfect for just a short time. A, a regular garden needs fewer plants which will grow into space as they and the garden mature together.

Leonie Cornelius is a qualified garden designer and interior architect who runs Blume Design House

(www.blume.ie). In 2012 she came to national attention, winning the RTE SuperGarden competition for designing a family garden. This was followed by a prestigious gold medal and Best in Category award at Bloom In the Park, Dublin. This year she was the garden design expert on RTE television show ‘Today’ with Dáithí Ó Sé and Maura Derrane.

Her regular fortnightly slot featured her own designs and plantings based on wild nature and beautiful architecture.

This project received grant aid from the Leitrim Development Company Rural Development Programme (LEADER).

In 2012 at the age of 68 I won the UK 300M hurdles and got 2nd in the 400M. After taking up the decathlon last year I won the UK decathlon and again this year.In the European championships I got 3rd in the decathlon and 2nd in the 300M hurdles.

Ill health is not part of normal aging. The norm should be to enter your middle years and beyond in vibrant health. There is nothing a young person can do that an older person should anticipate not being able to doall be it at a slower pace. What most people see as the effects of age have little to do with aging.

Sure as we age certain processes in the body slow down and this has its effects.

However, baring accidents and genetic ailments, we are designed to have full mental and physical capacity, abundant energy, enjoyment from exercise, participation in sport, active sexual life, restful sleep etc., etc., right into old age . So why do so many people inter their middle years and beyond experiencing so many restricting ailments?

Modern life and life style Many of the reasons of ill health are obvious enough and are visible from a very young age.

Obesity, diabetes , cancer, heart disease are well accepted to be the result of poor eating habits and lack of exercise. The ill health caused by excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking

and drug taking need no further comment.

But many people get into bad health for less obvious reasons.

We are living in a much more toxic environment and this has some serious negative health effects.

What people see as healthy foods are very often lacking in many essential nutrients because of modern farming methods. Many prescribed drugs used in the treatment of lifestyle “diseases” may have serious side effects.

Poor science.

Theories based on poor science has resulted in poor health advice.

People, especially in Ireland, lack adequate vit. D partly because of little sunshine but also because of the fear built up around the exposure to the sun which is based on very poor science. All the science now indicates that adequate vit. D is essential to good health.

The European and Irish guidelines for daily recommended amounts for vit D and many other vitamins and minerals have poor scientific backing.

Tap water has chlorine and fluoride added even though there is abundant science pointing to the serious ill health they cause.

Bottled water is stored in plastic bottles which has other health issues.

People were advised to avoid fat only to discover they are short of essential fatty acids.

Much of the advise on weight loss has little or poor scientific backing.

Moderate exercise is advised when vigorous exercise is more health producing.

All are advised to cut out salt but latest science indicates it is only an issue for a very small cohort of people.

Walk in Memory of a loved one on Memorial Walk Sunday

A

series of Memorial Walks (5km & 10km) are taking place across Mayo and Roscommon on Sunday 14th July 2013 in memory of friends and loved ones who are no longer with us. The event is being organised by Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Kavanagh’s Supervalu as part of the ongoing Help us to Help Others Campaign. These walks will bring people of all ages and from all walks of life together to remember that special someone and celebrate their life by walking in their memory. All are welcome to join in this event.

There will be a short memorial service before the walks in each area so that you can take a few moments to remember the person/s you are walking in memory of.

If you would like to register for the event you will be provided with a special memorial walk tshirt. If you would prefer to have it personalised with the name of the person/s you are walking in memory of, please contact the Hospice office before the 28th June 2013. Anyone who wishes to support the bereaved and join the walk are also welcome to do so.

All funds raised from the walks will go directly to Mayo Roscommon Hospice Specialist Palliative Care Service. The Service is free of charge to all who need it. The Foundation currently has to raise €1.3 million per annum to fund the service in Mayo and Roscommon. Plans to develop a 14 Bed Specialist Unit in Castlebar and an 8 Bed Unit in Roscommon Town are well under way. Mayo Roscommon Hospice will fund 100% of the cost of the build which is due to come in at approximately €13 million. The Foundation hopes to make a start on the project later this year with the purchase of the site in Castlebar.

Refreshments will be served at the end of each route.

IRELAND’S PREMIER FAMILY ATTRACTION

T

he Ballina Salmon Festival is back with a bang again this year and preparations are already under way. The hugely popular, fun-filled festival, which sees crowds of up to 200,000 people from near and far, descending on the ‘Salmon Capital of Ireland’ every year, will take place from July 7th to July 14th. If you are planning a visit to the area this summer, this is the time to do it, as the festival promises to provide fun for all the family – with activities being planned for both young and old alike. This year will see the return of some of the festival’s most popular events, including; Lady of the Moy 2013, Heritage Day and It’s a Knockout, finishing up with an illuminating Fireworks Display. Historical walks will take place Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday by local historian Carmel Hughes meeting from 11am at the Font.

A separate programme of events for children is also in place throughout the week, with the festival kicking off on Sunday, July 7, with the infamous Teddy Bear’s Picnic, with many other children’s events running daily throughout the week.

Mayo’s Got Real Talent, the talent show that sees people of all ages & of all different talents battle it out on stage for the coveted title returns again this year. The competition is open to anyone, with the age limit starting from 12 going up as far as 112, with the winner receiving first prize of €1000.

The second stage of auditions will be held on 24th June in Hotel Ballina from 7-9pm.

The festival will see live music take place on the streets and in the local pubs for the duration of the week with Social Dancing in the Marquee taking place in the Market Square. With a wide variety of music being provided throughout the week, you can be certain there is bound to be something to

suit everyone’s tastes.

As usual, the Wednesday of the festival, will see the return of the most popular day of the festival – Heritage Day, which is an official Gathering event in 2013. Last year thousands of people filled the streets, bring us back in time to old Ireland with a variety of different foods, music, craft and culture.

There is something for everyone at Heritage Day and it is a must for both visitors and local alike.

It’s a Knockout is a fun-filled evening for the more active amongst us. It’s a Knockout gives the teams the chance to compete against each other, making their way through the many different obstacles and having great craic while doing it!

International Night makes its welcome return and promises to be one of the biggest nights of the festival and great night of entertainment. Take your taste buds on a trip around the world through the streets of Ballina from 8pm. The festival then comes to a close with the spectacular fireworks display with music being provided on the night by Gerry Guthrie. Sunday, July 14, sees the duck race taking place in the River Moy, at 4pm, with Pratai Picking in the evening, on Abbey Street.

It is estimated the festival brings millions of euro to the local economy, with local hotels, pubs, shops and restaurants, both in Ballina and in the surrounding area, all benefitting from the surge in tourism. As the Ballina Festival Committee is a voluntary organisation they need as much help as they can get.
