40% 'AT HIGH RISK FROM AUTOMATION' Strandhill and Ballina least at risk A

ccording to recent research robots and automation pose a threat to 40pc of Irish jobs - and a number of rural towns have been identified as most at risk. Researchers at University College Cork have looked at where human beings are most in danger of being made redundant due to automation. The analysis predicted Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, and Carrick-On-Suir, Co Tipperary, will see the greatest job losses in the future. Towns whose jobs are least at risk were identified as Bearna, Co Galway, Strandhill, Co Sligo, and Malahide, Co Dublin. "Automation technologies have a long history with inventions like the steam engine, electricity, industrial robots or automated teller machines," the study outlines. "From this perspective, robots have been coming for a long time." Occupations identified as being most at risk to automation include office, secretarial and administrative support positions, process plant operators, jobs in agriculture and customer service. Those least at risk are in teaching, media and culture-related positions, health and social care and research and development jobs. 'Automation in Irish Towns: Who's Most at Risk?' examines the impact of automation across urban areas and identifies the 10 towns most and least at risk. Continued on Page 2

Sligo Rovers announce a new link up with IT Sligo

S

ligo Rovers are delighted to announce a new link up with IT Sligo which will increase the number of local and regional players advancing to play with the club’s first team and underage squads. As part of the agreement, two scholarships will be co-funded annually by IT Sligo and Rovers. The scholarships will be available for male and female players, where the students will play professionally with the club and also participate in the college’s football club, who participate in the CUFL & WSCAI leagues throughout the academic year.

The club will also have use of state of the art facilities at the college for first-team and underage squads, including its modern Knocknarea Arena as well as the grass and all weather pitches on site. Furthermore, the IT Sligo logo will appear on the Sligo Rovers first team kits and IT Sligo advertising will also be displayed in The Showgrounds and our social media platforms. Chairman Martin Heraghty spoke of his delight of the partnership: “It has always been important to establish a link with IT Sligo and to create scholarship programme that would be open to both

40% 'at high risk from automation' Continued from front page Authors Dr Frank Crowley and Dr Justin Doran presented their report at 'The Creative Rural Economy' public event in UCC which brings together academics, policymakers, business entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs to discuss challenges facing rural Ireland. "In particular, towns exposed to agriculture and manufacturing should be key concerns as they are likely to be the towns most disrupted," the study states. Using 2016 Census data, Dr Crowley and Dr Doran's research found the danger to towns is mainly explained by population differences, education levels, age demographics, the proportion of creative occupations in the town, town size and differences in the types of industries. The towns most at risk are: 1. Edgeworthstown, Co Longford; 2. Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan; 3. Carrick-OnSuir, Co Tipperary; 4. Portlaw, Co Waterford; 5. Clones, Co Monaghan; 6. Tullow, Co Carlow; 7. Cahir, Co Tipperary; 8. Lifford, Co Donegal; 9. Edenderry, Co Offaly; 10. Fethard, Co Tipperary

The towns least at risk are: 1. Bearna, Co Galway; 2. Strandhill, Co Sligo; 3. Malahide, Co Dublin; 4. Annacotty, Co Limerick; 5. Greystones, Co Wicklow; 6. Portmarnock, Co Dublin; 7. Enniskerry, Co Wicklow; 8. Ballina, Co Mayo; 9. Skerries, Co Dublin; 10. Maynooth, Co Kildare. "The impact of automation in Ireland is going to be felt far and wide, with two out of every five jobs at high risk," Dr Crowley said. He and Dr Doran said the research should help inform policy designed to tackle the challenges posed by automation. "The dominance of the city is a trend taking place right across the world. As cities become the dominant centre for economic activity, rural areas are being left behind, and these spatial differences have been credited with the rise of rightwing political movements across the world," stated Dr Crowley. The authors recommended a coordinated regional strategy to prevent the "brain drain" and said people would need to drive new social solutions to tackle the challenges.

male and female footballers. Everyone at the football club will really buy into this, as we feel the long term results will see more local talent coming through to the first team. Training times will be adjusted to allow students to attend college and the train with the team afterwards, or vice versa. We are all delighted with the agreement and look forward to the future. IT Sligo Planning, Operations and Excellence manager Iain McPherson is thrilled with the programme. “At IT Sligo, we are delighted we have established this link up with one of the biggest clubs in Irish football, Sligo Rovers. “Behind the scenes, both parties have worked extremely hard to create this elite football scholarship programme, and put in place a pathway for players to succeed in being professional footballers and obtaining a third level education which is so important.” IT Sligo manager Colm Jinks added: “The big thing for us is keeping those players who have come through the club’s underage system at the club and to help give them the best possible education at the same time. “IT Sligo has established itself as one of the leading sporting third level institutions in the region and are showing their intent in being one of the best in the country by offering this amazing scholarship programme along with all other scholarships available through IT Sligo’s football club.” The first two players who will attend IT Sligo in September 2019 will be announced in the coming weeks, as we look forward to helping our young Bit O’ Red players both on the field and off it.

Cape Clear off the coast of Cork and the Aran Islands have been selected by the European Commission for a new clean energy initiative. The islands will develop a plan to become self-reliant by harnessing wind, solar power and sea waves. 24 other European islands inhabited by over 2,000 residents have been selected for the programme which will eventually benefit from EU funding. Grace Bolton of the European Commission office in Ireland says the initiative will see Cape Clear and the Aran Islands dramatically reduce their energy costs.

“The engines of the Mayo economy” Law Society of Ireland unveils strategic plan to support and develop smaller law firms There are 53 solicitor firms in Mayo with five or fewer solicitors. The Law Society of Ireland has today launched a report and strategic plan to support and develop these ‘smaller firms’. Launching the report, Law Society of Ireland Director General Ken Murphy said, “Small law firms and sole practitioners are in almost every town and village across Mayo and are absolutely vital to the sustainability and success of their communities.” “Smaller law firms are the engines of the Mayo economy and local economies across rural and urban Ireland and provide effective legal solutions to their clients in all of life’s major milestones. If you are buying a home, making a will, or negotiating a difficult family law situation, it is more than likely that you are working with a small firm or sole

practitioner.” Lifeblood of local communities The report, authored by Crowe, is based on an extensive body of research involving a survey of hundreds of smaller firms from all over Ireland, focus groups and in-depth case studies. It makes eleven strategic recommendations to assist sole practitioners and smaller practices to grow their businesses and achieve greater success for themselves, their staff and their local communities. “Smaller firms and sole practitioners are the lifeblood of their local communities,” Mr Murphy explains. “Solicitors employ thousands of people in sustainable, high-quality professional jobs, provide effective legal solutions for neighbouring SMEs and individuals and help steer their clients through the major milestones of business and of life.”

“The distribution of firms across the country in even the smallest towns and villages is something that must be protected,” said Mr Murphy. “As local post offices and bank branches close, the local solicitor’s office is more vital than ever.” “When these law firms succeed, the communities they serve are more successful.” “Smaller law firms aren’t simply like small businesses – they are small businesses. They have unique characteristics; a sole practitioner, for example, is a business owner as well as a solicitor and must be adept at running a business as well as practising law. Many of the challenges smaller firms face are similar to those faced by other business owners and SMEs. The Law Society is working to support smaller firms as businesses as well as lawyers.”

Shannonside senator says audiology service failings in West could happen again

A

Roscommon Senator says she’s not satisified that sufficient measures are in place to ensure that failings in the audioloy services in the West will not happen again. It’s emerged that a further 57 families in the West of Ireland have received apologies from the HSE in recent weeks for failings in audiology services provided to their children. Last year, failings were

identified in paediatric audiology services provided to another 49 children in counties Mayo and Roscommon, some of whom were left with lifelong impairments. The audiologist in question no longer works in the Republic of Ireland. Senator Maura Hopkins who has worked with the Roscommon families affected says more needs to be done to support the children involved especially in their education.

Save Leitrim expresses ‘little confidence’ in ‘so called’ independent report on forestry

S

ave Leitrim is expressing grave concerns about the Terms of Reference for the ‘so called’ independent study on forestry in the county. The group says it was shocked that Forestry Minister Andrew Doyle did not engage with or meet with the group despite a request to do so, in advance of

finalising the Terms of Reference and that he doesn’t seem to have taken on board the expressed concerns of the people or communities in Leitrim in setting them. Save Leitrim believe the terms are very limited and simplistic and will not allow the UCD team to investigate, to report on or address many of the complex and

interlinked concerns by the farming sector, by the communities and by individual residents. It had expected that items such as fire risk, planning, soil carbon analysis, local infrastructure, land prices, tax and the many other exemptions for forestry would be included. Important questions like equity in climate action and local democratic accountability and input on landscape designations, land use change and development, it says, are completely ignored and there is absolutely no acknowledgment within the TORs of the health impacts on the population The group claims that the terms are clearly set to avoid any examination, critical or otherwise, of any aspect of current Government forestry policy and flawed licensing system which Save Leitrim believes is causing most of the problems. Save Leitrim is also very unsure about the “independence” of the report considering the involvement of UCD in the education of foresters, in providing research services and supports and such close associations with the forestry industry and various corporations which it says are leading and championing the plantation of Leitrim. The group says it has little confidence that the report will provide any answers which are likely to address the problems with forestry and says it’s a real missed opportunity and it is now calling on Minister Doyle to immediately declare a moratorium on any further afforestation in Leitrim until the study is completed and discussed to show some in that it will at least show some goodwill toward the people of Leitrim

Leitrim family settle High Court action over death of young mother The family of a 42-year old mother of three who died of a heart attack just hours after visiting her GP complaining of cardiac like symptoms have settled their High Court action for €750,000. The three young daughters of Sheila Tymon found her collapsed on her bed at home and they had to ring their father who drove with his car lights flashing to get to the family home at Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim. An off duty detective followed Michael Tymon who was driving at 70km in a 50km zone and later tried to help him resuscitate his 42 year old wife as her three daughters aged between five and ten years old looked on. Michael Tymon, Kilboderry, Summerhill,,Carrick on Shannon. Co Leitrim along with his daughters Rachel, Rebecca and Katelyn had sued GP Martina Cogan who was was in 2013 practising at a surgery at Keadue Health Centre, Keadue, Boyle, Co Roscommon. The settlement Mr Justice Kevin Cross was told was without an admission of liability. Counsel for the Tymons, Pearse Sreenan SC said it was their case that Mrs Tymon

should have been sent on for further investigation and treatment which in all probability would have saved her and she would have gone on to live a full life. Sheila Tymon (42) it was claimed in June 2013, complained of having abnormal sensations in her chest and down both arms which were very unpleasant and causing her discomfort and pain. It was claimed she went to GP, Ms Cogan on June 10 who found that Mrs Tymon’s blood pressure was high and a working diagnosis of possible shingles was made. On June 12, 2013 it is claimed Mrs Tymon attended the doctor’s surgery and a 24 ambulatory blood pressure monitor was applied. An anti hypertensive medication was prescribed and the plan was for Mrs Tymon to have a further review in three weeks. Mrs Tymon it is claimed took her medication but continued to get pain on exertion and at rest. On June 25, 2013 Mrs Tymon phoned the doctor’s surgery and asked if she would bring the review appointment forward and was told there was no appointment available until June 27. On that day she attended the doctor’s surgery and it was recorded she had

recurring jabs in the front of the chest, shoulders , the top of her back and down her arms. The working diagnosis was of a muscular/skeletal problem and she was prescribed anti inflammatories. Mrs Tymon it is claimed felt reassured but later that evening she complained of pain in her neck radiating into her head. At 19.45 pm, her children found her lying motionless on her bed. A post mortem on June 29 2013 found Mrs Tymon had extensive cardiovascular disease and her heart was enlarged. The cause of death given as acute cardiac failure. It was alleged there was an alleged failure to care for Mrs Tymon properly or at all and an alleged failure to treat her adequately or at all. There was also, it was claimed an alleged failure to recognise, diagnose or treat or suspect that Mrs Tymon was having had or likely to have a deep vein thrombosis which could cause a pulmonary embolism which unless treated could be and proved to be fatal. Approving the settlement Mr Justice Kevin Cross offered his sympathy to Mr Tymon and his family.

TV stars Bláthnaid Treacy and Dermot Bannon Urge People to Show their “Flower Power” & Wear a Purple Rose on 65 Roses Day

receive a minimum of €1.80. Service Provider: LIKE CHARITY. Helpline: 076 6805278.] In the Groove for 65 Roses Day Host of RTÉ’s Can’t Stop Dancing, Bláthnaid Treacy, is urging people to bust a move for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s 65 Roses Day: “I think most people in the country have been touched by somebody with CF. Their day-to-day life is a lot more difficult than we even realise. We have the highest incidence of CF in the entire world, which is really shocking because we are such a small country. So, 65 Roses Day is all about raising funds to help people with CF, including a new CF in-patient unit at Beaumont Hospital, as well as research and medical supports. So, let’s get in the groove and throw some shapes to dig deep for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.”

T

he vibe was seriously groovy as TV stars Bláthnaid Treacy and Dermot Bannon joined forces to show their “flower power” for the launch of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s (CFI) 65 Roses Day recently. 65 Roses Day – which derives its name from the way in which young children often first say the words "cystic fibrosis" – will take place on Friday April 12. Bláthnaid and Dermot were most definitely smelling of roses in Dublin’s National Botanic Gardens as they urged people to get behind the annual fundraising appeal by buying a purple rose, completing a 65 Roses Challenge or donating online at www.65RosesDay.ie. There are more than 1,300 people living with cystic fibrosis in Ireland and the number is increasing each year as a result of improvements in treatment and care. Feeling the Purple CFI depends almost entirely on the public for the provision of its services

and this 65 Roses Day is hoping to raise more than €120,000 for much-needed services for people with cystic fibrosis. These include patient grants for counselling, fertility treatment, and transplant assessment, covering the cost of a number of CF clinical staff in hospitals, and raising funds to assist in the building of the new CF in-patient unit at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin which serves people with CF across the North East region and beyond. People can support 65 Roses Day by: Buying a purple rose for €2 from volunteers, and in participating shopping centres and Spar Stores, or by donating online at 65RosesDay.ie Completing a 65 Roses Challenge such as playing 65 holes of golf non-stop, or baking 65 muffins for a bake sale at work, or having 65 friends and neighbours around for afternoon tea – for details visit 65RosesDay.ie Texting 65ROSES to 50300 for €2 [Text costs €2. A Must for Every Home Of course, it takes two to tango and joining Bláthnaid at the launch was architect and star of RTÉ’s Room to Improve, Dermot Bannon. Dermot is firmly of the view that when it comes to 65 Roses Day, a home isn’t complete without some purple roses: “One thing I know should be within everyone’s budget is buying a purple rose to support Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s 65 Roses Day on Friday April 12. We have more than 1,300 people in our country who are living with cystic fibrosis and some of the most severe cases. On 65 Roses Day, it goes without saying that purple roses are a must for every home, and I’d encourage people to please lend their support to people with cystic fibrosis in whatever way they can.” If you’d like to volunteer and lend your support on 65 Roses Day by selling purple roses in your community or workplace, simply call Brendán on LoCall 1890 311 211, email fundraising@cfireland.ie or visit 65RosesDay.ie People can find the appeal on Facebook at facebook.com/CysticFibrosisIreland and on Twitter at twitter.com/cf_ireland. Councillors question why Sligo not included in elected mayors poll Sligo municipal councillors want to know why Sligo Town has not been chosen among those where a poll will take place next May or whether or not a mayor should be directly elected by the people. Such a vote will take place in Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick. As reported on Ocean fm Sligo Municipal District councillors this week voiced their disappointment that Sligo is not among the cities in which the poll will take place, particularly as Sligo resident Martin Forde has already collected 1,100 signatures for a petition calling for a directly elected mayor. Following a proposal by Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry at this week’s

meeting of councillors from the Sligo Municipal District, the councillors are now to write to Local Government Ministers Eoghan Murphy and John Paul Phelan calling for Sligo to be included in the May poll. One councillor, Independent Socialist Declan Bree, said he had no confidence in Fine Gael ever introducing legislation for directly mayors, seeing as it and Labour had abolished the borough council. And Sinn Fein Councillor Chris MacManus reflected the views of some councillors when he said he was not interested in having a mayor for ceremonial reasons but rather one with strong executive powers.

The

NCCA hosts seminar in Sligo as one of a series of national seminars on the Review of Senior Cycle

Students from Ursuline College, Sligo taking part in discussions about Senior Cycle Education at NCCA National Consultation Seminar on the Review of Senior Cycle in Sligo. 41 schools nationwide are reviewing senior cycle education in collaboration with the NCCA. On Wednesday 13th February, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) hosted a seminar in Sligo exploring pathways and flexibility in senior cycle education in Ireland. The NCCA are working with 41 schools on the Review of Senior Cycle and over the next fortnight 400 stakeholders will participate in discussions at seminars hosted in Limerick, Athlone, Sligo and Waterford. The seminars are part of the ongoing consultation on the vision for senior cycle education in Ireland, and the events are designed to engage delegates in discussion and debate on the curriculum for this critical phase in student’s education. In Sligo, NCCA welcomed teachers, parents and students from collaborating schools as well as representatives from management bodies, teacher unions, subject associations, National Parents

Council Post-Primary, support services, Higher Education, State Examinations Commission and the Department of Education and Skills. Seminar participants heard from Professor Emer Smyth of the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) who provided insights into teacher, student and parent voice on pathways, programmes, assessment and reporting emerging from the school-based review. Participants then engaged in round table discussions in relation to key questions and areas of their choice and their contributions will feed into the review. Local school Ursuline College, Sligo are one of the 41 collaborating schools mentioned above. This process began in 2016 at the NCCA Board for Senior Cycle, which is made-up of representatives or educational partners and stakeholders. The Board identified priority areas to be explored during a review of the senior cycle phase of education. To underpin and inform the review, NCCA commissioned research on

TY, LCVP and LCA programmes and an international scoping of provision in upper secondary education in other jurisdictions. In February of 2018, this international research was published and NCCA launched the Review of Senior Cycle. Schools at the hub of educational change In May 2018, NCCA began working with 41 collaborating schools to generate a shared vision for senior cycle and a strong base from which to shape a curriculum that genuinely meets the needs of all learners for years to come. This approach features two consultative cycles of thematic discussions about senior cycle education with these schools. The first cycle focused on the Purpose of Senior Cycle Education and Thinking about the Future, with the second cycle exploring Pathways and Flexibilities in Senior Cycle Education. Each cycle begins as a school-based discussion, where the emphasis is on teacher, parent and student voice. Each cycle then widens out to conclude with a national seminar discussion involving representatives from the collaborating schools and education partners. An update bulletin is then distributed to all post-primary schools and a range of stakeholders. The bulletin for Cycle 1 is available here: https://www.ncca.ie/media/3878/ncca_ sc_single_pages_en.pdf and an update bulletin from Cycle 2 will be available at the end of March. What’s happening next Following this series of national seminars, a report on the review of senior cycle education will be published. Senior cycle review will then be opened to full public consultation from March to June 2019, with many ways of getting involved and contributing to the conversation. Keep an eye on our website at ncca/seniorcycle for news and updates on how to get involved in the public consultation from March to June 2019.

Unique Wedding Ideas

Y

ours won’t be just another cookie-cutter wedding—here are our top ideas to make your wedding a standout celebration.

Convenient Child Care Hire a babysitter (or two) and set her up in a room so your youngest guests have a place to go when they tucker out. If it’s possible, pick a room near your reception location so parents can stop by to

check in on the tykes and then return to the party easily. Stock the room with snacks, games and a portable DVD player to keep them entertained, and make sure there’s a soft sofa and blankets for those inevitable naps. A Memorable Guest Book Think beyond the typical guest book. One creative idea we love: Create a jigsaw puzzle of your photo and let guests sign each

piece. Or put out silver trays with engraving pens so guests can carve a lasting message on a useful keepsake for you. A (Friends and) Family Tree Seating Chart You worked hard on figuring out that seating chart, so get the dinner conversation started by showing guests how they’re connected. Create a sign that shows the relationships between the guests who will be sitting next to each other—it’ll help break the ice for those who haven’t already met. A First-Dance Confetti Drop Your first dance will be one of the highlights of your wedding, so add this extra-special touch to up the entertainment factor (and make for some serious photo ops). If

your song is slow and romantic, have fresh flower petals instead of confetti dropped from the ceiling. Your rental company and florist can work together to make this happen—and don’t forget to make sure the reception waitstaff will be standing by to clean up. A Video Confessional Booth For a fresh twist on the hot photo booth trend, rent a video booth where guests can record a quick on-screen message for you. Ask your videographer to edit some of the best clips into your wedding video. Then, post your other favorite video “confessions” on your wedding website and encourage guests to check them out in your thank-you notes. A Showstopping Ceremony Exit If you play it right, your ceremony

exit will be one of the most heavily photographed moments of your wedding, so forget the rose petals and birdseed. Jazz up your exit by passing out small bags of colorful confetti, paper airplanes, mini beach balls, or even lavender buds for everyone to toss your way. Even better: Stage your own mini parade by passing out parasols and noisemakers for your guests to escort you to your getaway car. A Surprise Choreographed Dance Take a few dance lessons before your wedding, but instead of the standard waltz, kick it up a notch by learning a sultry tango or a high-energy swing routine, and then surprise everyone during your first dance. For an unexpected surprise, get your dad or even your grandpa in on the act. Imagine the looks on your guests’ faces when you and your pops break into a hip-hop routine mid-father-daughter dance.

Wedding Fashion for new seasons 2019 - 2020 remain popular. The secret of slip dresses is their skimpiness. It teeters on the brink of a fall. Deliberately modest design and translucent fabrics used in the dresses infatuate us. Magnificent lace, thin tulle, a smoky grid alternates with more denser materials… They emphasize seductive forms of a maiden figure without trite hints. Among slip models deep necklaces or high cuts of skirts are quite rare. In this case designers suggest covering juicy details with a long veil. And they trim the veil with the same lace as on the dress. Provocative slip dress trends were excitedly supported by many Russian celebrities. The singer Pelageya, designer Kira Plastinina, model Anastasia Shubskaya… They have worn effective, lacy dresses and covered open parts with a long veil.

Better to prepare beforehand for one of the most important life event. Moreover, not to overlook any details, think through a wedding style and concept. The conservative wedding fashion design is gradually going away. It can’t confront designer ideas and last relevant trends. But it doesn’t mean that girls dreaming of a traditional white dress can forget about that. Don’t wait wedding trends to turn toward you. A wedding gown in 2019 can be any: extravagant or conservative, bright or restrained; provocatively luxurious or stress your modesty. Meanwhile, designers don’t overlook the classical rules. They easily leverage those creating original wedding looks. The latest wedding dresses 2019 Elegant luxury is the top trend of upcoming season 2019. It relates to the most famous wedding of the year. The Harry and Meghan Markle’s look has become an orienting point for many fashion houses. Gorgeous brides walk down the runway wearing elegant long-train dresses. An equally long veil completes the impressive outfit. The veil buries the silhouette with a gentle, mysterious mist. Fancy rhinestones, pearls and shining crystals are good accessories. Dense matte texture fabric is one more punch line of a royal dress. It turns any modest design into the embodiment of stylish elegance and exclusiveness. The mermaid and trapeze

silhouettes, V-necklines, off-theshoulder dresses, delicate waist accents, and minimum dress decorations are the peak of popularity. Slip dresses Wedding experts claim that in 2019 charming lacy models would be

Boat and sweetheart neckline dresses, poodle draped skirts from flowing or dense fabrics, mermaid silhouettes and laconic column dress… A corset dress can turn any bride into a fairy tale princess. Complete your wedding look with a sophisticated necklace or tiara, wide bow at the waist or dramatic gaufre. Capes and Stoles easily move in the first wedding dance. In 2019 the list of such dresses will be headed by minimal models with simple cut lines. The main feature is the total absence of decorative elements. Accessories are taken as expressive accents: footwear, bouquets and jewelry. Brides won’t also overlook fit-andflare dresses with low necklace and rich decor. Lace, embroideries, prints, multi layers… Awesome wedding gowns will let you look like stars.

In the current interpretation the “mermaid” tail can begin from the hip line or much lower than a knee. Multiple layers form a luxurious, magnificent bottom. Top Tips When Choosing Your Wedding Venue C

hoosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task. It really doesn't have to be. Back in my wedding coordinator days i always advised brides and grooms-to-be to arrive armed with some information. This allowed me, as the wedding coordinator, to tailor the

information to provide so as not to overwhelm the couple. You don’t need to have a 100% or even 20% visualisation of the day you want but there are a few essentials that are important to know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date:

Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea of what you feel you are willing to spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue: You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Marquee,

Glamping, Restaurant and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on your abroad location as there are some excellent destination planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see if you can add your personal touch to it.

8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your chosen venue. If there have been issues, you will be aware so that you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. f it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

Caroline Wimsey awarded Makeup Artist of the year 2018 C

aroline Wimsey has been awarded Makeup Artist of the year, in the Irish Beauty industry Awards 2018. Caroline found out that she was to be crowned winner at the elegant ceremony which took place in December. The elegant ceremony took place at the Crowne Plaza Dublin Hotel, on Sunday 16th December, and the crème de

la crème of the country’s beauty sector gathered together to celebrate the meritorious individuals and establishments that work so hard to ensure that their customers receive excellent and innovative services and treatments. The awards seek to remark the growth of the Irish beauty sector and recognise the

achievements of the individuals working within it, from dentists and doctors to hair and beauty businesses, academies, teams and clinics. Therefore, accolades where presented not only to beauticians and hair stylists, but also to other talented individuals from the cosmetic sector, who deliver exceptional customer services

and work within businesses, clinics and practices, where excellence is a standard. The black-tie event was as glitzy and glam as the individuals and establishments it celebrated, and hosted a a diverse range of accolades, including Beauty Salon of the Year, Aesthetic Clinic of the Year, Cosmetic Clinic of the Year, Dentist of the Year and many more. A Spokesperson for the Irish Beauty Industry Awards 2018 said:” We have had an overwhelming response from the Irish public who voted for their favourite professional and establishment that make them look at their best. “The awards have helped to shine the spotlight on the talented professionals and businesses that have shown great passion, commitment and innovation for the beauty industry, who often don’t get the recognition they deserve but remain overshadowed instead. Set in rural 1960’s Ireland, in a society that values prayer, property, land and keeping up appearances above all else, recently widowed Maggie Polpin’s plan to assert control over the family business and farm, marks the end of her relationship with her four children, tearing the family apart forever.

Riverside Theatre Group - Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th February, 8pm Ballina’s Riverside Theatre Group return with their production of John Millington Synge’s classic The Playboy of the Western World. A small community in North Mayo is thrown into turbulence with the arrival of Christy Mahon, a mysterious stranger claiming to have killed his father. The local men aren’t sure if he’s a danger and the local women find him fascinating. Michael James Flaherty the local publican takes a shine to him, and his daughter Pegeen Mike finds his company preferable to that of her dull fiancée, Shawn Keogh. However it transpires that Christy’s father is not dead after all, when Old Mahon arrives with a gaping head wound, searching for his ungrateful son. Tickets: €12 / €10. Early booking advised.

The Big Fellow by Declan Gorman Based on Frank O’Connor’s biography of Michael Collins Co-Motion Media & Ballina Arts Centre The Big Fellow is an imaginative, entertaining piece of non-stop theatre. It features literary genius Frank O’Connor recreating the life and tragic death of Michael Collins as he graduates from daring escapades in the War of Independence to commanding the official army of the divided Free State. But there is a twist... O’Connor fought against Collins in the Civil War. Why did he divert from a glittering literary career just 12 years later to write a book in praise of his dead enemy? “A combination of physical energy and historical passion … totally engaging.” Emer O’Kelly, Sunday Independent Contains strong language and simulated gunfire. Not recommended for children under 13 years. Tickets: €18 / €16. Early booking advised.

Ballina Arts Centre – March 1st, 8 p.m. Written & Performed by Donal O’Kelly It’s Dublin in the 1980s. Rabbit is a selfmade haulage magnate. But something’s wrong. He cuts a deal with his underling Keogh to help him find his lost moorings. The quest is hampered by his dead father Bat, Citizen Army volunteer and pawn shop assistant, bubbling up. The struggle between father and son, past and present, imagination and reality, spans Dublin. Their voyage out of Howth and up the River Liffey builds to a climax described by The Guardian as “one of the strongest dramatic conclusions I’ve ever seen”. An explosive exposition of the generation of Irish men that led us to Boom and Bust. Written thirty years ago, ‘Bat the Father, Rabbit the Son’ is more pertinent than ever. First presented by Rough Magic for the Dublin Theatre Festival in 1988, Bat has toured to New York, Chicago, London, Edinburgh, Australia and New Zealand.

K.G.B.

Sun 24 Feb 2019, 8pm €20/18conc/10 u18s Multiple award-winners Paddy Keenan, Frankie Gavin and Dermot Byrne come together as K.G.B. All are synonymous with Irish music, both in their own individual right, and as members of some of this country's most famous traditional bands.

Overeating Linked to Memory Loss, Mental Decline

O

LDER people who consume a diet very high in calories may be increasing their risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the memory loss and mental-function problems that sometimes precede Alzheimer’s disease. In a new study of more than 1,200 people in their 70s and 80s, Mayo Clinic researchers found that men and women who consumed at least 2,143 calories per day had more than double the odds of having MCI compared with those who consumed 1,526 calories per day or less. Federal health officials recommend that women over age 50 consume between 1,600 and 2,200 calories per day, depending on how physically active they are, and that men in the same age group aim for between 2,000 and 2,800 calories. But the guidelines emphasize the importance of balancing calorie intake and physical activity in order to maintain a healthy weight, not specific calorie amounts. This emphasis on calorie balance points to a key limitation of the new study: Although Geda and his colleagues took into account extenuating factors such as body mass index, genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease, and medical history (including heart disease, strokes, and diabetes), they had no data on exercise and physical activity. Future studies will need to examine both sides of the calorie equation, Geda says. The study participants, all of whom hailed from Olmsted County, Minn., filled out a detailed questionnaire about their typical diet

over the previous year. They also underwent a series of memory and cognitive tests. None had dementia, but the researchers determined from the test results that 163 had MCI. MCI is “the gray zone between normal aging and de-

mentia,” Geda says. “People with MCI are not demented [but] they are forgetful a little more than expected for their age.” This forgetfulness goes beyond senior moments (such as misplacing car keys), and might include forgetting airplane flights and other important appointments, he adds. Although it remains to be proven, there is a plausible scientific explanation for how overeating might erode mental function.

Consuming a high-calorie diet may spur production of harmful, oxygen-containing molecules, and

these so-called oxidative radicals may accumulate in cells and cause neurons to break down, Geda says.

GET YOUR HOME WINTER READY 10 tips to save on your heating bill this winter

G

etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check? That’s why we love this ‘Deaerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99 6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder

from Amazon. It fits snugly around the door and it can be cut to shape. Cost: €6.99 8. Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling. 9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the room- turn it off when it has the job done.
