FTER a virtually unprecedented heatwave enjoyed by parents and children it’s back-to-school time throughout the north-west it’s back to reality for many parents who face the prospect of massive hikes in back-to-school costs. According the children’s charity, Barnardos, more parents are being forced to borrow to cover expenses such as the voluntary contribution to their child's school, uniforms and books. Back-to-school costs are running well above the rate of inflation, despite a pledge by Education Minister Richard Bruton to ease this trend. According to Barnardos sending a first-year pupil to post-primary school will require a basic cost of €765 euro next month, while it is €380 for a fourth-class primary pupil and €360 for a senior infants' pupil. Overall, average back-to-school costs rose by between 3pc and 9pc on last year, well ahead of the consumer price index (CPI), which was up 0.4pc in the 12 months to June. When it comes to clothing and footwear the gap was even wider with parents facing increased costs of up to 22pc, despite a drop in the year-on-year rate of inflation for this spending category. The average cost of a secondlevel uniform is now €200. In addition, 53pc of primary school parents and 54pc of post-primary school parents reported an increase in book costs this year. More schools are also seeking a voluntary contribution from parents to help pay for day-today running costs, a trend probably linked to the austerity era cuts in State grants that have not been restored. North West Simon Community Annual Sleep Out The Annual Sleep Out in aid of the local homeless charity North West Simon Community will take place on Fri, 5th Oct in Sligo & Letterkenny. This event is part of Simon Week which is an awareness campaign nationally taking place from Mon 1st to Sun 7th Oct. The number of homeless people has now reached a “record high” and while rough sleeping represents the severest form of homelessness, the majority of people who are homeless or experiencing homelessness in Sligo. Leitrim & Donegal are not immediately identifiable as homeless. There are currently 9,846 people homeless in Ireland at present an increase of 31% on last year. There are 3,826 children in emergency accommodation nationally with their families. This figure is frightening and the problem is not just an

urban issue, it affects everyone nationally. “YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE SLEEPING ON THE STREETS TO BE HOMELESSNESS” They are staying in emergency or temporary accommodation, on social housing lists or waiting in vain for affordable private rental accommodation to become available. North West Simon Community explains ‘they are the unofficial’ “hidden homeless” – people with no fixed residence that are sofa-surfing or relying on the goodwill of families and friends. The Annual Street Sleep is taking place in Sligo & Letterkenny on Fri, 5th Oct and the Charity are urging businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals from all walks of life to sign up today! North West Simon Community prevented 177 families and individuals from becoming homeless in 2017 and need to continue to

provide vital services in order to continue to prevent homelessness throughout Sligo, Leitrim & Donegal. If interested, please contact Mary on 087 7708865 or e mail: mary@northwestsimon.ie . You must be over 18 years to take part in the Sleep Out. Each participate will receive a Certificate and go home with the satisfaction that they have helped make a difference to their local Simon Community. You can be the key to someone’s future. Once a participant signs up and meets the fundraising team they will receive a fundraising pack which will provide details of the event and include a Sponsorship Card. For further details, check out North West Simon Community facebook page facebook.com/northwestsimoncommunity Sign-up today and help change someone’s life for the better!

Back-to-school blues for many parents Continued from front page The research revealed that some 67pc of primary school parents - up 11pc on last year - and 71pc of post-primary school parents - up 2pc - were asked for a contribution. The burden of back-to-school costs has seen more parents going into debt - 21pc at secondary school level. Most others either delay payment of other bills or take money out of savings. All of this has been referred to by

Barnardos' chief executive officer Fergus Finlay as parents continuing to subsidise an "underfunded education system" which claimed to be "free". Mr. Finlay He called on the Government to uphold a child's constitutional right to free primary education by committing an extra €103m annually, phased in over a three years, starting with €20m in 2019 for free books. After that, an additional annual subvention will be required to make second-level free for all. The Minister must

also answer some questions as the rising burden on families comes despite a directive to schools last year by the Department of Education to reduce costs. The department, in a statement, said cost reduction would soon be legally underpinned by the upcoming Student Charter Bill. The same burden will be felt by homeless people this week, who witnessed the scenario of thousands of vacant properties sold by banks to vulture funds – as rents continue to rise. Twenty-Two Mayo teens attend major Leadership Conference in Maynooth

T

wenty-two young people from Mayo joined 250 other teenagers from India, the USA and Ireland in Kildare this week for Foróige’s Leadership for Life Youth Conference. The conference took place throughout last week, 30th July – 3rd Aug, on the grounds of NUI Maynooth, and brought together teenagers to empower them to become leaders in their own lives. Paul O’Connell gave a talk to the young people, as part of the Aldi guest lecture series, where he highlighted the importance of staying positive. Paul O’Connell, Aldi Play Rugby Ambassador said “God given talent is a myth, successful people work harder and smarter and that’s how they achieve their goals. It’s really important to keep positive.

Don’t let anyone say you can’t do something. You have the capacity to work, train and do anything you put your mind to. It doesn’t matter what it is, stay the course and be the person you want to be.” Seán Campbell, CEO of Foróige, said “These young people have come to this conference because someone in their lives saw their potential to lead, grow, develop and influence, whether that was a parent, Foróige youth worker, or teacher. “Amongst other things, these teens will learn about resilience and perseverance this week, and further develop their ability to believe in themselves. It’s more important than ever for these young people to realise that leadership is not about ego or personal advancement, it’s about showing the way

Big crowds attending Knock Novena

Fr Richard Gibbons, PP.

T

HE 41st celebration of the annual Knock Novena is currently underway. This year’s nine day celebration of prayer provides a special time of preparation for the visit of Pope Francis to the Shrine on Sunday, August 26, as part of the World Meeting of Families in Ireland. The theme for this year’s Novena is ‘Faith and Family’ and will draw from the key topics and themes related to Family from the teaching of Pope Francis in The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia).

“The daily celebrations, sermons and processions are a very important part of the Novena tradition, however in recent years we have noticed a greater desire from pilgrims for discussion, reflection and the chance to engage on contemporary Church issues,” says Fr Richard Gibbons, PP. “The daily workshops, which are held throughout the Novena, give them the opportunity to do that. We also have a Bookshop here in the Shrine which is a wonderful resource for those that want to deepen aspects of their faith or to

simply learn more about different ways of praying and other spiritual elements. “This year’s Novena will end on high as we await the visit of His Holiness and look forward to what will be a splendid and historic day for the Shrine and the village,” says Fr Richard. August 15th is traditionally one of the biggest days of the year at Knock Shrine. The speaker was Most Rev Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam. Among the many speakers yet to contribute is Fr Stephen Farragher, Parish Priest of Ballyhaunis, who will speak at both ceremonies on Thursday, August 16. A native of The Neale, he was appointed to the teaching staff at St Jarlath’s College Tuam following ordination. He served for two years as Pastoral and Youth Director at Knock Shrine. In 2011 he was appointed PP of Ballyhaunis. Kathleen Duffy, Retreat Director and Coordinator of Children’s Liturgies, will speak at the workshops on Thursday. For the past 11 years Kathleen has been involved in the planning of the weekly Children’s Masses in St Patrick’s Church, Ballina. There will be many other distinguished speakers throughout the nine days, including Fr. Richard Gibbons himself, who speaks at the 8.30 Mass on August 21st. He has been Parish Priest and Rector at Our Lady’s Shrine, Knock since 2012. Since his appointment Fr Richard has been instrumental in the development of Knock Shrine and has led two major renewal initiatives, Witness to Hope and Together in Faith. He looks forward to welcoming Pope Francis to Knock Shrine during his visit to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families.

Roscommon “illegal” breeder has 86 dogs removed by ISPCA

The dogs were being kept in very poor conditions and had only one person to care for them all. Eighty six dogs, including 23 puppies were removed by ISPCA Inspectors from an unlicensed dog breeding establishment in County Roscommon following a visit by the Inspector and the county dog warden last Friday. The dogs were being kept in very poor conditions and had only one person to care for them all. Nineteen of the dogs were suffering from a variety of health issues including mange, eye conditions and ear infections and are now receiving veterinary treatment. A further 17 puppies were removed from a house on Thursday where the owner had allowed his dogs to breed without consideration for the consequences. All of the dogs will need to

be vaccinated, neutered and microchipped before being responsibly rehomed in Ireland. The dogs, including Shih Tzu’s, Cocker Spaniels, Jack Russell terriers, Pugs, French bulldogs and other various mixed breeds, are currently being cared for at the ISPCA’s animal centres in Longford and Donegal and will not be available for rehoming for several weeks. Twenty five dogs have been transferred to our friends at Dogs Trust and we are very grateful for their assistance. Dog breeders are required to be registered and licensed under the Dog Breeding Establishments (DBE) Act 2010 if they have six or more female dogs over the age of six months and capable of breeding. The Guidelines associated with the DBE Act were recently revised and published by the Department for Rural and Community Development (DRCD) but

will not come into force until January 2019. Although in this case the premises was not licensed, it demonstrates the need for an appropriate number of staff to care for the dogs in such premises. In the consultation on the new Guidelines, the ISPCA called for a staff to dog ratio of 1:10, instead DRCD opted for 1:25. The ISPCA does not believe that one person can provide adequate care for that number of dogs, particularly if all of them have a litter of puppies. The ISPCA is asking the public to report their suspicions about unlicensed dog breeders to the ISPCA’s National Animal Cruelty Helpline 1890 515515 or to the local authority. Senior ISPCA Inspector Kevin McGinley said: “The ISPCA is grateful to have secured the removal of all dogs from this unlicensed premises. With so many dogs in our care we are appealing to the public to support us financially with this challenge and by offering responsible homes for the pups and dogs. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Roscommon County Council and the county Dog Warden for their assistance” The ISPCA is now appealing to the public for donations after taking in over 100 dogs in just three days. If you can support the ISPCA, please make a single donation or consider becoming a regular donor by visiting our website www.ispca.ie or text ISPCA to 50300 to donate €4. Text costs €4. The ISPCA will receive a minimum of €3.25. Service provider: LIKE CHARITY. Helpline: 0766805278.

T

he effectiveness and success of the Mens Shed movement in this country has, to many people been unprecedented. I mean, since when did the Men-folk get together outside of the pub? Since when did men start taking an interest in their social lives, in their health, in themselves at all? Well, the Mens Shed movement has taken everyone by storm; a storm of forward thinking, of taking control, of support and of taking responsibility. And the Round Tower Mens Shed, located in it’s new premises on Killala pier, is just one of 15 in Mayo alone. The Round Tower Shed, though based in Killala, is open to and welcomes men from any surrounding area, of any age who would like to come along, with no obligations, no pressure and no expectations. It is quite simply the easiest place for any man to go, to be

genuinely welcomed, to be shown around and given the freedom of the Shed. The ethos of the Mens Shed, “the provision of a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where the men are able to gather and /or work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time and in the company of other men” (Irish Mens Sheds Association), is at the very heart of the reason for establishing the Shed in 2016 in the small coastal town. A small but determined group of men decided that it was time for the North Mayo area to have a Shed too and began the process of setting up the Round Tower Mens Shed. After a lengthy search for a Shed, the local parish priest offered the garage at the parochial house as a starting point and so the Round Tower shed was initiated.

With up to 14 men attending the Shed, space quickly became an issue and after another search their new location was agreed. With a few months work ahead to make the Shed fit-for-purpose, the Round Tower Mens Shed members are digging in to create a functional, welcoming and comfortable place for men of all ages to attend. With the Shed currently opening on Monday and Thursday evenings, the existing members are actively encouraging new members to come along, in the hope that the Shed will be open every day in the not too distant future. In a bid to support the Round Tower Mens Shed, the Killala Quilters group recently donated a hand-crafted quilt to the Men which will go for raffle soon. The patchwork quilt, in an Irish Chain pattern and in neutral tones was created by the 5 quilters over many hours and would be difficult to value. The Round Tower Mens Shed have been making waves in the area since it started and the benefits of having a shed located in Killala are easily seen. The Shed built a new crib for Christmas 2106 and it was located close to the church again last Christmas. The Shed also actively instigated and supported a monster clean-up of the Killala area in Spring along with the Tidy Towns committee, the Killala Coast Guard, business people and locals which saw approximately 40 bags of rubbish being gathered from access roads and around the town. If you want more information just pop in to the Shed on Monday and Thursday evenings, call in to Iggy in On The Way Café or speak to any shed member. Go on…. You won’t regret it.

ligo Park Hotel is investing more than €3m in a comprehensive redesign and refurbishment . Major development work, to cost more than €3m, is well underway at Sligo Park Hotel. It is part of a comprehensive redesign and refurbishment of the local establishment. Much of the work has already been completed with the hotel, which is located on the entrance to Sligo town, now boasting a brand-new contemporary look, reflecting its location on the Wild Atlantic Way. The owners of the four-star hotel have already invested €2.25 million refurbishing the entire ground floor of the hotel, including the lobby, Jack B’s Bar, the Hazelwood restaurant and the

The Miracle Prayer Dear heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours this time I ask you for this very special one (mention favour). Say for three days and promise publication and your favour will be granted no matter how impossible. S.A.

Hazelwood and Mespil conference suites. As part of a three-year strategy, a total of 90 bedrooms have also been refurbished to an extremely high specification. When the complete refurbishment is finished in early 2019, more than €3m will have been invested in the project. The Sligo Park Hotel is a sister hotel of the Mespil Hotel in Dublin, comprising Lee Hotels. It has in excess of 100 employees. Gerard Moore, General Manager of the hotel, said: “We have undertaken this significant investment to position the Sligo Park Hotel to take full advantage of increased interest in Sligo due to the highly successful marketing of the Wild Atlantic Way. Having successfully come through the recent recession, we recognised the changing needs and expectations of our customers. Our main lobby and bar required modernisation to meet and exceed guest expectations. “We put in place a three-year strategy to refurbish the hotel including all guest bedrooms, lobby, bar, restaurant and conference rooms. Planned works for the year ahead include upgrading the Health & Leisure Club and our main Sligo Park Suite, where we host weddings and events.” One of the main reasons for the investment in the Sligo Park Hotel was to maintain the edge in the competitive wedding and conference market. This is already paying off with the hotel recently recognised as one of the best wedding venues in Connacht at the Wedding Journal Reader Awards 2018. “The rise in social media usage has led to Ireland becoming a much more visual culture so we must continuously

strive to present the hotel in a visually appealing fashion.” Mr Moore said that there was evidence of increased spending confidence in Ireland “but we all learned to focus on value as well as price during the downturn and it is important that we continue to offer guests — whether on a weekend break or choosing their wedding venue — exceptional value for money.” Located on the edge of Sligo Town, in the Heart of Yeats’ Country, Sligo Park Hotel is set in quiet parkland and surrounded by some of Ireland’s most iconic scenic spots, ranging from the majestic Benbulben to the dramatic coastlines along the Wild Atlantic Way. Spectacular views are a feature of the hotel’s bedrooms. “The feel of the new look at Sligo Park very much reflects its beautiful setting in this part of the North West of Ireland. Outside is the most varied land and seascape, coast, mountains, lakes, rugged rocks, crashing waves and the smoothest sand. This variety of texture is reflected in the materials selected for Sligo Park’s refurbishment. Natural tweeds, smooth velvets and limestone walls set the mood which is both uplifting and restful,” said Mr Moore. The contemporary style hotel boasts 136 spacious, comfortable bedrooms, including 46 Superior bedrooms and the Innisfree Suite in the private Lough Gill Wing. The hotel’s Hazelwood restaurant has an AA Rosette award. Sligo Park Hotel also has a fully equipped leisure club as well as dedicated conferencing and banqueting facilities, which can host up to 520 delegates. The hotel is 2.5 hours from Dublin and Belfast, two hours from Galway and one hour from Donegal.

Taking the Stress Out of College L

iving away from home tends to be the toughest adjustment for first-year students. You've had a clear role within your family all of your life: the family comedian, the mediator, maybe the translator. These roles can help you feel like you belong somewhere. It can be hard adjusting to a new place and a new way of fitting in — especially if it seems like your family is doing fine without you. You may feel homesick in your first weeks and months. The first thing to know about homesickness is that it's very common. In fact, just about everyone experiences it at some point in his or her life. It might not feel like it when you're in it, but going through homesickness helps us all grow stronger and builds our coping skills. Homesickness can force you to challenge yourself into trying new ways of meeting

people. Try joining your campus gym and taking exercise classes or studying in public places like libraries and cafes. Try to identify your feelings and fears, and talk about what you're going through. The sooner you deal with these issues, the sooner you'll feel better. If you are homesick, it can help to call, write, or email your parents, other family members, and friends from home to let them know how you're doing and to tell them you miss them. Who else can you talk to? For starters, that person sharing the dorm room with you. Roommates can be great built-in buddies. As first-year students themselves, they're probably experiencing many of the same fears and worries that you're dealing with. But what if you don't get along with your roommate?

Northwest Express August, 2018

Meeting Roommates & Making Friends In some cases, it can be a good thing if you and your roommate aren't much alike. A different perspective on things may be helpful. In fact, it's probably wise not to expect that you'll be best friends with your roommate to avoid disappointment. Katie came to college expecting to be best buddies with her roomies. But over time it felt like the two of them made her the third wheel. With a switch in roommates and a change in attitude about what to expect, she ended up having a blast. Not everyone can switch roommates, though. That's why it helps to start with the idea that you'll respect your differences no matter what. If you and your roomie don't get along, it can help to find someone you do feel understands you — which should be easy on a campus with plenty of people. Giving new students an opportunity to meet is one idea behind freshman orientation. And many schools have student organization nights where all of the campus clubs gather and promote their organizations, so you can meet people with the same interests as you. You'll also meet tons of people in class or in your dorm. If you're really having roommate or friendship troubles, make a stop at the school counseling centre. All colleges and universities have one, and first-year fears are something the counselors know well. The counselors will either talk to you one-on-one or if there is a peer group for students who are feeling like you, you can choose to join it. Talking to others who are in the same situation can be comforting. Some students turn to alcohol, heavy partying, excessive sleeping, smoking, or drugs to deal with their first-year problems. Unfortunately, students who resort to getting wasted all the time to cope with their new

situation often find that too much partying brings lots more problems, like interfering with their ability to keep up with assignments, papers, and exams. In the worst case, it may mean getting in trouble with the college judicial department.

Staying Healthy Away From Home Sore throats, sprained ankles, and wisdom teeth that act up are as common among college students as homesickness. It's very easy, especially in a dorm environment, to catch bugs like the flu. People come in and out of your room all the time, and some of those who are sick may pass it on. And who has time to go home to the doctor when they get sick? With this in mind, universities have created health centers staffed with doctors, nurses, dentists — even nutritionists and counselors — ready to tend to your needs. Check out your student orientation packet or your school's website to find out more information about the health

Prevention Tips It's great to be prepared if you get sick, but better yet, how can you prevent getting sick in the first place? The usual measures, like washing your hands frequently, also apply at college. But you'll also have to think about community bathrooms, shared computer terminals, and cramped living quarters, all of which make germs way too happy. If you spend time in the school computer labs, it's a good idea to carry some antibacterial hand lotion in your backpack. When your roommate gets sick, use a germfighting solvent to occasionally wipe down shared things like doorknobs, telephone receivers, and remote controls. And don't underestimate the power of eating well and getting a good night's sleep. As always, the best defense is a good offense.

Top Tips on Finding Accommodation much information on them sometimes, but it's worth having a look at them every now and again. Word of Mouth Tell everyone you know that you're looking for a place; word of mouth is surprisingly successful. Some places, especially if they're being let through an estate agent, will have To Let signs outside. You should make an appointment to see the flat or house and turn up early. Campus Accommodation A number of Colleges either own their own campus accommodation or have agreements with developers for the provision of campus accommodation. Talk to the college accommodation office for further information. Internet Search Engines It seems that everyone I talk to lately has found their apartment/flat/house on the internet. There are lots of websites to choose from. Try and find out if the one you're using is reputable. Remember accommodation tends to move fast on the internet, but don't let the pressure of finding accommodation lead you to make any rash judgments. Newspapers A good place to start looking for a flat or house is the accommodation section of local and evening papers. Try to buy the paper as soon as it comes out. Notice Boards Accommodation may also be advertised in shop windows or notice boards in supermarkets and colleges. Notice boards can have too

Students' Union Many SU's run an accommodation service. Even if they don't run a service they might be able to give you some good advice on finding accommodation locally. Accommodation Agencies Accommodation agencies are commercial organisations that may charge a fee for helping you find private rented accommodation. They normally deal with more expensive accommodation than newspapers. Before you register with the agency and pay a fee, you should get answers to the following questions: Is the agency licensed? What services are offered for the fee? In what circumstances will you be entitled to a refund? How many landlords who accept rent supplements does the agency have on its list? If you decide to register, make sure you get a receipt for any money you pay. All About Rent Books Who is entitled to a rent book? Every tenant paying rent is legally entitled to have a rent book supplied by the landlord.

This applies to houses rented by private landlords, voluntary bodies, local authorities or employers, if a rent is payable. A rent book is not needed for a holiday letting. When must the rent book be supplied? The rent book must be supplied to the tenant by the landlord at the commencement of the tenancy. What is a rent book? Basically, a rent book is a record of rent and other payments made by a tenant to the landlord. However by law, a rent book must also contain other information related to the tenancy. Usually, a rent book will be in booklet form but it may be in another form provided it contains all the necessary details. What information must be included in the rent book? The rent book must include: the address of the house the name and address of the landlord and of the landlord's agent (if any) the tenant's name the term (i.e. period) of the tenancy the amount of the rent and when and how it is to be paid particulars of any payments, other than rent, to be made by the tenant to the landlord for services, e.g. for heating or piped television the amount and purpose of any deposit paid by the tenant and the conditions under which it will be refunded by the landlord a statement of information which advises tenants of their basic rights the date of commencement of the tenancy an inventory of furnishings and appliances

supplied by the landlord for the tenant's exclusive use. Who makes the entries in the rent book? The landlord must enter the information relating to an individual tenancy in the rent book when it is being given to the tenant. Any subsequent changes in this information must be entered in the rent book by the landlord within one month of the change. This would happen if, for example, there was a rent increase or if the landlord appointed a new agent. The landlord is also responsible for recording the rent and other payments that may be needed if any query arises. How are rent and other payments recorded? Where rent or other payments for services are made in person by the tenant (or by a person acting for the tenant) to the landlord, the landlord must, at that time either: record the payment and sign for it in the rent book, or provide a signed receipt containing full details of the payment. Where payments are made other than in person (e.g. by standing order, bank giro, etc.) the landlord must, within three months, either record and sign for the payment in the rent book or give the tenant a written statement of the payment. Who holds the rent book? The rent book should be held and carefully looked after by the tenant. It contains details of the letting that have been agreed between the tenant and the landlord and provides a record of rent and other payments that may be needed if any queries arise. The tenant is however, obliged to make the rent book available to the landlord so that the landlord can make any necessary changes in it and record rent and other payments.

SeAn Tyrrell brings his Message Of Peace to Ballina

Gretchen Peters: Dancing with the Beast

Sat 8 Sept 2018, 8pm €20/10 u18s

The legendary Seán Tyrrell brings his one-man show Message Of Peace to Ballina Arts Centre on Friday 7th September, at 8pm. The Message Of Peace is the deeply moving story of the lesserknown Irish hero John Boyle O’Reilly (1844-1890). Told through spoken word and song, this show traces O’Reilly’s life, starting with his early childhood, which was set against the backdrop of the famine, and detailing his part in the Fenian attempted uprising in 1867, which led to his being imprisoned for life in Australia. O’Reilly escaped from prison, however, and was brought to the U.S.A. onboard an American whaling ship. His escape encouraged O’Reilly to organise the escape and rescue of his fellow Fenians, incarcerated in Fremantle prison, onboard another whaling ship, the Catalpa. Once in America, O’Reilly settled in Boston numbering Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain and Wendell Phillips among his friends and admirers. In 1886 O’Reilly was commissioned by Joseph Pulitzer to write a poem for the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty. As the editor of the Pilot newspaper, O’Reilly championed Native and African American rights as well as speaking out against anti-Semitism. John F. Kennedy quoted O’Reilly in his 1963 speech to the Dáil when he said “The world is wide when it’s weary leagues two loving hearts divide. The world is small, when your enemy is loose on the other side”. O’Reilly was a Romantic, visionary and poet, with a commitment to justice that both directly and indirectly inspired generations of civil rights activists and freedom fighters. In the late eighteen hundreds O ‘Reilly in a reaction to the massacre of African Americans in Carrolton Mississippi wrote in the Pilot. “We have to awaken to a new dawn when man is not judged by the colour of his skin but by his own merit.” Uncannily similar to Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speech in Washington a century later. His very important story crosses three continents, jail, persecution and escape. You will be led across a dance-floor of words so lovely, so dire and so hopeful that there can only be one feeling when it is over the kind of exhaustion that comes from awe. This riveting stage presentation brings this forgotten visionary-poet to life. Weaving a varied tapestry of traditional music, song, words and poetry, through the extraordinary talents of singer-bard Seán Tyrrell, whose passion for O'Reilly’s life, work and poetry inhabits and permeates this stunning theatrical presentation. A must see! “If you’re lucky you come across a voice like Seán’s once in a lifetime,” “When he sings I feel alive.” Brenda Fricker Oscar Winning Actress. The genuine article. Billboard (US) To get your ticket call Ballina Arts Centre on 096 73593. Prices: €12 and €10.

Grammy nominated, Nashville singersongwriter, Gretchen Peters comes to the Hawk's Well Theatre as part of her current tour of her new album, Dancing with the Beast. Dancing with the Beast puts female characters at the fore, from teenage girls to old women. And intentionally so. With the 2017 Women's March and #MeToo Movement as bookends to her writing time, Peters knew that a

feminist perspective would be the critical core of the record. “Those two events just put everything -- as so many things in 2017 -- in really stark relief,” she admits. “You can trace the feminist DNA in my songwriting back to 'Independence Day' and probably before. The thing that 2017 did is just put it front and center. It was very easy to kind of go to sleep for a while and just not think about that stuff because we were lulled into complacency for eight years.”

NoCrows with special guests Lisa Lambe and Martin Tourish

Sun 2 Sept, 8pm €20/18conc./10 u8s The Hawks Well NoCrows is a dynamic folk orchestra from the multicultural melting pot of Sligo’s music scene. Formed over a decade ago by musicians from Sligo’s impressively diverse music scene, NoCrows embrace Irish traditional, jazz, classical and world music styles in equal measure. The

presence of Waterboy Steve Wickham in their ranks has drawn them added attention, but they are a multiinstrumental ensemble outfit, who describe themselves – not inaccurately – as a “folk orchestra”. They look forward to this special collaboration with accordionist Martin Tourish and singer/songwriter Lisa Lambe.

THE Best foods for healthy eyes Eat fatty fish at least once a week? The right kinds of fruits and vegetables? Find out how to lower your risk of serious vision loss from advanced age-related macular degeneration. whites are at greater risk than African Americans and smokers face a higher risk than nonsmokers.) “While the current research indicates that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of late AMD in some patients, more research is still necessary,” study leader Bonnielin K. Swenor from Johns Hopkins University told Reuters. The fact that the study was “cross-sectional” — meaning it analyzed participants at one point in time rather than following them over time – means that its difficult to know for sure if the participants’ reported diet habits preceded the development of the eye disease.

T

he health benefits of oily fish have been widely reported including reduced risk for heart disease, depression and certain kinds of cancers. Eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids has also long been thought to be good for maintaining eye health. Now new research from Johns Hopkins University backs up previous studies showing that fatty fish-eaters tend to have lower rates of advanced agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) — a condition where vision becomes increasingly blurry and distorted due to damage to part of retina. This can impair basic daily activities such as reading, driving or even recognizing faces. While there is no cure for AMD, there are some treatments and lifestyle changes that can help to prevent serious vision loss. The study, published in the journal Ophthalmology, indicates that omega-3 fatty acids — found in oily fish such as salmon,

albacore tuna and mackerel — may affect the development or progression of AMD. Researchers looked at data from 2,520 adults aged 65 to 84 who underwent eye exams and completed detailed dietary questionnaires. And while they found no clear relationship between participants’ reported fish intake and the risk of AMD, there was a link between higher intake of omega-3-rich fish and the odds of having advanced AMD, the most serious stage of the condition. In fact, participants who ate one or more servings of such fish on a weekly basis were 60 per cent less likely to have advanced AMD than those who averaged less than a serving per week. However, the relationship between participant’s fish intake and the risk of AMD — as opposed to advanced AMD — was less clear. The study took into account known risk factors such as gender, race and smoking habits, which have been previously connected with AMD. (Women face a greater risk of AMD than men,

Foods for healthy eyes In addition to fatty fish, there is growing evidence that fresh fruits and dark green, leafy vegetables — foods rich in vitamins C and E, selenium, and carotenoids (including beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) — may delay or reduce the severity of AMD

low in fat to keep your eyes healthy. Research has also shown that consuming red meat 10 times a week or more puts you at a 47 per cent higher risk for macular degeneration. Vitamins and supplements A high-dose formulation of antioxidants and zinc can significantly reduce the risk of advanced AMD and its associated vision loss, according to The National Eye Institute’s AgeRelated Eye Disease Study (AREDS). This is often recommended for people with intermediate AMD in one or both eyes.Because there can be harmful side effects, including urinary tract problems, to highdose supplements, be sure to consult with your doctor before taking supplements. Also keep in

mind that some vitamins and supplements can interfere with some prescription medications. Other preventative measures Experts also recommend making other healthy lifestyle choices to help prevent AMD: • Smoking. If you smoke, quit. Studies have shown that people who smoke may be 3-4 times more likely to have AMD. • Exercise. Not only can physical activity reduce risk for AMD, but it may also slow progression of the disease. • Watch your numbers. This includes controlling your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. • Adequate protection. Protect your eyes and be sure to wear sunglasses, especially in strong sunlight.

To reap the most health benefits, select the freshest, most colourful veggies and fruits you can find — think red, dark green, orange or yellow. Some top foods for your peepers include carrots, corn, kiwi, pumpkin, yellow squash, red grapes, tomatoes, spinach, kale, collard greens and green peas. Nuts are another source of omega3 fatty acids — and they also contain copper, which it thought to play a role in preventing agerelated eye diseases. Foods to avoid A high-fat, high-cholesterol diet is not only bad for your heart, but it can lead to fatty plaque deposits in the macular vessels — which can hamper blood flow and increase the risk of AMD. Similar to guidelines for cardiovascular health, experts recommend maintaining a diet

GET YOUR HOME WINTER READY 10 tips to save on your heating bill this winter

G

etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched

off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check? That’s why we love this ‘Deaerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows

Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99

6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder from Amazon. It fits snugly around the door and it can be cut to shape. Cost: €6.99

8. Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling. 9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the room- turn it off when it has the job done.
