OCIAL MEDIA is undoubtedly a tremendous tool in the modern world of communications but maybe it’s time something radical was considered to curtail its abuse. The latest research carried out by DCU’s National Ant-Bullying Research and Resource Centre (ABC)revealed that one in ten teachers in Ireland have been a victim of cyberbulling – and most of it by their own pupils . . . and almost 15% of those who took part in the study were aware of a colleague experiencing cyberbullying in the past year. One can image how social media can provide a means, or platform for revenge for pupils who are unhappy with how a particular teacher is treating them in class – an option not available to students decades ago. The research surveyed 577 post-primary school teachers on the issue of cyberbullying which is defined as “the creation of digital texts, images and recordings that portray the teacher in ways that are demeaning and/or ridicule the teacher which are then transmitted to others”. The impact of cyberbullying ranged from increased anxiety and stress levels, negative impacts on their working environment and a reluctance to report the issue and seek help from management. Liam Challenor, a doctoral researcher at DCU’s National AntiBullying Research and Resource Centre, said the study showed that more resources are needed to safeguard the mental health of Irish teachers. He said: “The findings of this research show that some post-primary teachers in Ireland experience cyberbullying from pupils, parents and other school staff. This victimisation has a significant impact on the well-being of these teachers and on a teacher’s role within a school context. It requires further supports to reduce cyberbullying in schools and to support everyone within the school community.” One research participant described what it was like to experience the abuse. The teacher said: “It is very upsetting. It is also very embarrassing to read nasty comments written about you, with no chance to defend yourself and no means of finding out who is responsible.” “Since it is in writing, it can be viewed again and again. The deliberate and underhand nature is intimidating and it’s hard to prevent further bullying.”

A

Co. Leitrim group which restored a beautiful Church and built bridges across denominations at the same time has scooped a top honour in the inaugural National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2018. St. Catherine’s Church Restoration Committee in Fenagh was named Heritage Category winners at a glittering awards ceremony in Dublin on Saturday. They receive €10,000 to go towards the project, and will feature in the Awards show which will be broadcast on Virgin Media One on this Sunday November 11th at 9.30 p.m. The new Awards are aimed at honouring the extraordinary work impacting on communities all over Ireland thanks to National Lottery Good Causes funding.

36 finalists from all over Ireland gathered for the gala Awards dinner which was hosted by TV presenter Karen Koster and attended by Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan T.D. The Church, built in 1787, had been out of use for 20 years after the floor collapsed during a wedding service. National Lottery funding through the Heritage Council helped fund replacing the wooden floors. Getting the National Lottery money gave the community the spur they needed to fundraise and a “Dream Auction” was held in 2016 which captured the imagination and raised significant sums. After the floor was completed, the St. Catherine’s Church Restoration Committee

secured a grant to repair stained glass windows which had been vandalized in 1989. Repairs to the gutters, roof, entrance porch followed and the Church was re dedicated in 2017 with the first wedding in a generation held in April of that year. There are plans to replace the vestry ceiling, finish interior painting and the development of a Contemplation Garden created in the grounds. Instead of the Church being abandoned, it came back into use for the benefit of all the community. It is now a place of worship for all, proven by the community of different faiths who have helped to save the building. The impact has lasting affects in building bridges across denominations and creating social inclusion opportunities.

Naughten condemned by Leitrim Council over broadband fiasco These are not happy times for Roscommon-Galway TD, Denis Naughten, who recently quit as minister over the broadband saga At a recent meeting Leitrim councillors clashed over the controversy that led to Mr. Naughten’s resignation. The Roscommon-Galway TD quit as Communications Minister last month after it emerged he had several private meetings and dinners with US businessman David McCourt, the head of the sole bidder for the National Broadband Plan. Leitrim County Council backed a motion condemning what it described as ‘ill-advised’ meetings, which it claims has further delayed the rollout of broadband to rural area. Sinn Féin councillor Séadhna Logan proposed the motion. While several councillors supported his views, Independent councillor Des Guckian disagreed.

ALL TYPES OF WORK CARRIED OUT Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland; Tourism Minister Brendan Griffin; Biddy Hughes, Westport House; and Eithne Cosgrove, Hotel Westport, at World Travel Market in London.

M

inister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD joined Tourism Ireland and some 70 Irish tourism businesses – including Westport House and Hotel Westport – at World Travel Market (WTM) in London this week. WTM heralds the beginning of Ireland’s international promotional drive for the 2019 season. During the three-day travel fair, the Irish companies have been engaging in thousands of meetings with British and international tour operators – to negotiate and exchange vital contracts for 2019. Organisers estimate that £3.1 billion’s (about €3.5 billion’s) worth of business was done at last year’s WTM. Ireland’s strong presence at World Travel Market is particularly important this year, in the context of Brexit and its implications for Irish tourism, in 2019 and beyond. With around 182 countries and regions all vying for business at WTM, Tourism Ireland aims to stand out from the crowd and capture the attention of the global media and travel professionals in attendance. Minister Griffin said: “I am delighted to be able to attend World Travel Market, which provides an excellent platform for Tourism Ireland, and the participating tourism enterprises, to highlight

Ireland’s world-class tourism experience to international tour operators. It’s great to see so many tourism enterprises from all parts of Ireland conducting hundreds of business meetings and doing a great job of selling tourism to the global travel trade. While there are challenges for Irish tourism as a consequence of Brexit, I am confident that the tourism industry can adapt quickly to enable continued growth from international markets. Great Britain is, and will remain, a very important market for tourism to Ireland. The Irish Government is committed to maintaining the strong business and cultural links that have existed between our two countries for centuries. I must commend Tourism Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and all our tourism partners for their concerted efforts to address the implications of Brexit and to keep the island of Ireland high on international travel wish lists.” Latest CSO figures indicate that this will be another record year for Irish tourism, with more than 8.2 million people arriving during the January to September period – an increase of +7%, or about 542,000 extra overseas visitors, when compared to 2017.

Growth has come from all of our main market areas. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “The large representation of Irish tourism companies at World Travel Market once again this year is extremely welcome. Since the UK referendum on Brexit, Tourism Ireland has been closely monitoring developments in the British outbound travel market. As our nearest neighbour and our largest market for overseas tourism, Britain will remain a priority for us. “In 2019, we will continue to work with our industry partners to highlight the ease of getting to the island of Ireland, with almost 238,000 seats by air and 46,000 car spaces on ferries from Britain every week, as well as the wide variety of things to see and do on holiday here. Competitiveness and the value for money message will remain important. We are committed to making 2019 another strong year for Irish tourism.” World Travel Market is the largest B2B event in the global travel and tourism calendar, with around 50,000 travel professionals from 182 countries and regions around the world and over 3,000 international media in attendance.

Queenan excluded from Fianna Fail ticket for local elections Popular Sligo County Councillor Joe Queenan has confirmed that he has received an email from FF party headquarters to say he will not be added to the party ticket to contest the local elections. He has also confirmed, however, that he will run as an independent candidate in the 2019 contest, if he cannot run for Fianna Fail.

Cllr Queenan faced ethics enquiries after the Standards in Public Office Commission or SIPO held hearings following an RTE Investigates programme. Those hearings were believed to have been completed in September but Monaghan Councillor Hugh McElvaney has mounted a High Court challenge against RTE.

While this process is going on the Enniscrone-based councillor says he cannot contest next Summer’s election for Fianna Fail. He is hopeful for a swift conclusion to the SIPO hearing which ultimately could allow him to run as a Fianna Fail candidate. Cllr Queenan claims to have the support of fellow party members.

Sean Fox on left in RTE’s Taken Down

M

anorhamilton heart throb Sean Fox set fans into a frenzy when he appeared on RTE’s Taken Down on Sunday night. The show which started on Sunday night, November 4 focuses on Detective Jen Rooney (Lynn Rafferty) as she investigates the violent death of a Nigerian girl whose body is found close to a Direct Provision Centre, where refugees wait for political

asylum. Her investigation brings viewers into a twilight world of the new Ireland where slum landlords and criminals prey on the vulnerable. While guard Fitzy drew a mixed reaction for his behaviour towards residents at the direct provision centre where victim Esme had lived, fans were delighted to see new faces on our screens. While some talked

about how he was “easy on the eye” others said he could be Ireland’s next rising star. Sean who is a vetern at The Glens Centre, Manorhamilton appeared in Ken Loach’s “Jimmy’s Hall” had the part of Sean MacDiarmada in “Rebellion” and had previous roles in Gerard Barrett’s “Smalltown” and Padraig Conaty’s “No Party for Billy Burns.”

Deputy McSharry’s says abortion u-turn is not a political ploy Fianna Fáil’s Marc MacSharry surprised many by his decision not to support the abortion legislation going through the Dail. Speaking to the local press he was explaining his reasons for not supporting the legislation after saying initially he would back the Bill Apparently it became an immensely personal issue with him and he just could not bring himself to vote for it. As he outlined in the Dáil abortion would become a contraceptive method being pushed by “men and not women”. He said he was talking exclusively about men and that they would be “applying pressure after the fact. I fear that this will become the contraceptive of choice for people down the line; not today, next week or even next year, but in time,” he told the Dáil. He was concerned that abortion would eventually become the norm rather than for hard cases. “This is a concern for me” he said. He added: “Abortion will become something that is the

norm rather than for the hard cases. That is a concern for me.” Speaking to the Irish Independent later he said: “There have been about eight million abortions in the UK since the 1967 abortion law was enacted. It is difficult to imagine these are all hard cases” “And it’s men I’m talking about, opposed to taking the appropriate precautions for contraception.” The Sligo/Leitrim Deputy’s stance has drawn much criticism with Health Minister Simon Harris describing the comments as “horrific and bizarre”. Deputy MacSharry said he didn’t want to upset anyone and understood he had annoyed a lot of people with his current stance. Previously he had said:“I have no difficulty separating my personal view from my legislative responsibilities and as such I will be supporting the legislation when it comes before us.” Of course, Deputy MacSharry will not face any action by his party leader Micheal Martin on this as there’s a free vote on the issue.

Martin Calvey

T

he Calvey Family from Keel, Co.Mayo are the inaugural winners of the National Farming for Nature Award 2018. This award was announced at a special event on the 27th October with MEP Mairead McGuinness in Kinvara, Galway as part of the 2018 Burren Winterage School. Over the past four weeks members of the public, and in particular the farming community, were asked to vote for one of six shortlisted farmers as their top pick for the prestigious Farming for Nature award, part of a wider independent initiative (www.farmingfornature.ie) which hopes to source, share and celebrate the stories of those farmers across Ireland who are doing great things for nature on their land and in their community. The winners, the Calvey Family have farmed on Achill Island for seven generations. They farm a herd of 150 Black-faced Mountain Sheep on their shareholding of an extensive (20,000 acre) commonage, as well as on an area of machair (a rare seaside habitat). These ‘Mayo blackhead ewes’ have been kept on this farm for many generations and are perfectly adapted to grazing the mosaic of protected habitats – from mountain to seashore – where they play a key role in maintaining local

biodiversity. Martin is also a master butcher and he and his family have, since 1962, run the only abattoir on Achill island. The Calveys sell their trade-marked ‘Achill Mountain Lamb’ from their local shop as a high-quality food product, one which has won numerous awards and is the choice of many top-chefs through the west of Ireland, including Ashford Castle. Martin is a champion of good environmental management – a member of the local ‘custodians of the commonage’ group who helps ensure the land is properly cared for, as well as a great advocate for the link between habitat management, local food production and the added ecosystem and financial value that can result. As his daughter Martina says ‘We respect nature, we work with it and it rewards us very well’. One of the Award organisers, Brendan Dunford, said that ‘This year’s finalists represent such a rich and varied cross section of all that’s great about Irish farming: hard working farmers who love their land and their livestock and who really care for their natural environment. We can all learn something from these inspiring people and we should all be really grateful for what they do. I’m delighted for the

Calveys and how they have managed, as a family, to bring a taste of Achill to food lovers all across Ireland, testament to their entrepreneurship and hard work’ Project Coordinator, Brigid Barry said that ‘We are thrilled with how the process came together for this first year. The shortlist was compiled from an initial longlist of farmers which was nominated by over 150 environmental professionals. There was incredible buyin from the public to support these shortlisted 6 farmers with nearly 4000 votes coming in over the last month. Each one of the six farmers has incredible farms in such different landscapes and with diverse habitats, they are all doing fantastic things for nature and are keen to share their stories so that other farmers are inspired to improve their land as well...‘ The national Farming for Nature Award 2018 was sponsored by Bord Bia and supported by a wide range of farming and conservation interests including the Dept of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the National Rural Network, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Irish Farmers Association, the National Biodiversity Data Centre, Teagasc, the Irish Farmer’s Journal and the Heritage Council.

Celebrating 10 years of Mayo volunteering at Ard Inis Gloire, Belmullet, from left: Left to righ: Edel Gallagher, John Lonergan, Kathy Rowland, Annette Maughan and Frances McNulty Lynott.

A

special night of celebration took place in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet on Thursday, October 18 to celebrate a decade of volunteering in the county. The event was hosted by Mayo Volunteer Centre in conjunction with Mayo North East LEADER Partnership, and welcomed 2018 Mayo Person of the Year Sr. Maureen Lally and former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan to emphasise the importance of connecting and embracing community. Over 80 people attended on the night with many local organisations taking the opportunity to showcase themselves in a miniexpo. Mayo Volunteer Centre, which is supported by Department of Rural and Community Development and Moy Valley Resources IRD provides a “matching” service across the county, where people interested in pursuing volunteering opportunities within their community are matched with suitable organisations in a structured, supportive environment. The process empowers the volunteer, who can pursue opportunities of personal interest and can decide from the outset how much - or little - time they can devote to a role, depending on their own skillset or interests. The current range of available volunteering opportunities available with Mayo Volunteer centre is surprisingly varied, with opportunities existing across many sectors in areas like web development, photography, retail work, voluntary board membership, charity collections, teaching, mentoring,

gardening and lots more. There is scope too to work with disadvantaged and minority groups, younger and older people and sports organisations and develop your own skillset and experience in doing so. Speaking at the event, Mayo Volunteer Centre Manager Kathy Rowland said: “Mayo Volunteer Centre has a countywide remit and the management and steering committee wanted to hold our 10 year celebration in Erris to show our presence here, and our commitment to work with every community in Mayo. We are very aware of family and work commitments, and provide flexible opportunities for everyone. I have always believed that everybody has a value and something to offer, and when placed in a community who sees their potential, people can only thrive and achieve great things.” John Lonergan in his powerful talk demonstrated his understanding of human nature and delivered a ‘roadmap to happiness’, consisting of forgiveness, gratitude, building friendships and leaving the past behind. Most importantly he referenced the importance of human contact that everyone cries out for, the need to be heard. This message of connectivity and embracing community was a core theme of the event, reinforced by the words of Sr. Maureen Lally. With over 40 years’ experience in community development, she placed a strong emphasis on the importance of community, listening to people and reaching out the hand

of friendship. An Erris-based documentary, ‘A place to Gather’ was shown, capturing the views of older people living in the Erris area. Initiated by Comharchumann Forbartha Cill tSeadhna Teo in Geesala. This project examined the services available within the community, and explored fears that exist for people around loneliness, isolation, immigration and technology. The film contrasted the sadness caused by emigration and local economic difficulties to the joy that comes with living in such a beautiful part of the country. It was noted that often with new technology, people forget to connect with each other. Councillor Gerry Coyle paid tribute to those involved, stating: “It is safe to say that anyone who sat in the audience and listened to the past Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan and the wonderful Sister Maureen Lally, had to leave this event inspired and uplifted. They both spoke so eloquently as did the other presenters. It is fantastic to have the Mayo Volunteer Centre in Erris for the last ten years and I wishing them continued success and growth. I wonder how many of us could give up a few hours of our week and volunteer with a local organisation.” For more information on volunteering or to browse opportunities, visit www.volunteermayo.ie, email info@volunteermayo.ie or visit their offices on Cathedral Road, Ballina or Tucker Street, Castlebar.

It was always her dream to own her own school and after working in Ireland and France that finally became a reality in 2011, when Collooney Montessori School opened. Colette and Veronica with Jack, the school mascot. There have been a lot of changes in preschool education in Ireland since, but the Montessori Method works perfectly with the Preschool Regulations, Aistear (the early childhood curriculum framework) and Síolta (the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education). Dr Montessori’s method is based on the profound respect for the potential of the individual. Her theory was that children learn best when they are able to follow their individual interests, and that the child’s “work” is to develop the person he or she is to become. Each child is encouraged to progress at his or her own level of readiness. Colette Doherty joined the school in 2014. Colette is also an experienced Montessori teacher and completed the Linc training last year. Collooney Montessori School achieved certification as having an authentic Montessori programme by St Nicholas Montessori Society of Ireland, and the Healthy Ireland award in 2016. In order to provide the very best for the children in the school, both Veronica and Colette regularly attend training courses and Montessori Network meetings. You can contact Veronica and Colette at 087 6779419 to arrange to visit the school.

Illustrator and Designer Oonagh B.McCann

I

llustrator and Designer Oonagh B.McCann works from her home studio ‘Studio CeltoiCroi’, in the heart of the Sligo countryside. Qualifying as a graphic designer from Letterkenny I.T. in 1993, she decided in 1995 to put her career on hold, to focus on raising her family, a family that steadily grew over the following ten years. Oonagh kept her proverbial hands dipped in creative waters, by perfecting the pointillism technique with pen and ink. Pointillism is the painting technique in which small, distinct dots are applied in patterns to form an image, a technique Oonagh finds therapeutic, mindful and extremely rewarding. In March 2016, she was inspired by her four daughters and life’s learning, to create a spiritual, whimsical little character called Mindful Nona. Nona, with the help of power animal guides, offers guidance & wisdom. Every image has the power to awaken truth from within, encouraging mindfulness and (re)connection with your inner child, helping many to clarify everyday questions we frequently ask ourselves about life. Answers that were once known, but for the moment, forgotten. “ The answers and signs are all around us, if we are willing to take the time to see or listen for them. Once we do this, we learn to quiet the mind, become reacquainted with ourselves, and see the world through

the eyes of our inner child ” O.B.M.C. If you would like to know more about Oonagh and Nona, she urges you to get in touch. Bliss Acupuncture, Co. Sligo

Eileen Cawley - Qualified Acupuncturist, licensed with The Acupuncture Council of Ireland and the Association of Chinese Herbalists Ireland.

Acupuncture is one of the longest established forms of healthcare in the world. Acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for thousands of years. The focus is on you as an individual, not your illness, and all symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to affect the flow of your body’s qi, or vital energy

“As our modern lifestyles become more stressful and hectic, the medical professionals are now appreciating the effect stress can have on our health. When stressed, our body can become more reactive. Aesthetic Acupuncture is a safe and holistic treatment that will address skin concerns as well as in identify any underlying problems of premature aging. It combines different factors that act on the skin from a cellular level. The session involves the integration of Chinese medicine with modern western modalities for the purpose of facial balance. You have not experienced a cosmetic facial like this before, which leave you looking younger and healthier. Insertion of fine acupuncture needles

simulates the skin cells to turn over; triggers the production of collagen and elastin while relaxing the connective tissue between the skin and muscles. The needles are inserted in specific locations to help the facial muscles that are tight to relax, as well as activate the muscles that have weakened, causing the face to sag and droop. Led light therapy is added to offer your skin an additional touch of health and youth. Light therapy involves having low level laser light wavelengths emitted directly through the skin. This process can not be felt. The light is absorbed into the skin to a depth of about 8 to 10 millimetres, at which point it has positive effects on cellular energy (APT) the nervous system and metabolic processes. This light therapy increases blood flow circulation, helping to bring more oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and cells. It improves natural collagen and fibroblast production, two components that are important in a youthful skin appearance. Tissues are repaired and natural healing is achieved, as well as a lowering of oxidative stress something highly associated with the aging process Eileen Cawley is a member of the Acupuncture Council of Ireland and the Association of Chinese Herbalists of Ireland. Eileen has sought out and trained with the best Acupuncturists including an intern ship in the Hunan Red Cross Hospital China, Dr Tans balance method training in Belgium and Spain and also with Dr Jake Fratkin, Colorado USA.

Deirdre Cooke Opticians, Sligo

D

eirdre Cooke qualified as an Optometrist in 1989, and worked for a few years in Galway before establishing her Sligo practice in 1991 on Castle Street. Cooke Opticians recently moved to their new bright, modern, purpose built location on Stephen Street. Deirdre considers herself very lucky to have a fantastic team of 9 individuals working with her and supporting her in the business, including her two Optometrist colleagues, Nuala and Tara. Teamwork is an important aspect of any business, and is evident once you walk through the door, which the practice is very fortunate to have. Deirdre attributes the success of the business to the warm, caring and professional service given to patients and customers by her team. Customer care is of paramount importance during every step of the eyecare journey, from the initial booking, to the consulting room, to choosing the perfect pair of glasses. Cooke Opticians prides itself on having many generations of families attending the practice, some of whom first attended as children themselves. Deirdre, Nuala and Tara are continually expanding their skillsets by attending regular courses, training days and lectures. The practice has invested heavily in new technology, including our latest purchase of an OCT Scanner, which gives comprehensive images of the eye. This has been invaluable in assisting in the early detection of eye disease, allowing for more accurate referrals. Deirdre is aware that the success of any business is completely reliant on the support of its customers, and is extremely grateful for the continued support of so many loyal patients.

Velvet Hair Lounge, Enniscrone Salon owner Carrie Fielding is celebrating three years in business in Enniscrone this November and it is obvious that she is happier than ever with her salon and the way her business and career are going. One of her goals last year was to teach hairdressing and she has achieved this. She completed a Diploma in Education and Training and says: “I have had a challenging year with the studying and trying to juggle running the salon and home life. However, it has all been worth it. I now have two new qualifications in training and education and every Monday I train a lovely group of stylists in a salon in Ballina. This I am really enjoying and hope to do more teaching in the future”. Carrie says she chose the Alfaparf Semi Di Lino range because their new line not only offers professional solutions that treat the scalp, increase shine and protect colour, but now it offers something more. “Today we are exposed to atmospheric pollution on a daily basis and this can increase dullness, breakage and yellowing of the hair. The Alfaparf SDL range contain innovative Urban Defense Pro technology which protects hair against the damage of pollution. They also

contain Shine Fix Complex-linseed extract, Colour Fix Complex-UV filter and antioxidant to improve colour longevity which I believe is so important for our clients who are paying for professional colour services.” One of the reasons for Carrie’s success is due to the fact her staff are continually incorporating the latest developments and trends by being on top of their training to ensure they are up to date with all the latest in hair styles, colours and cuts. This is probably the reason why Velvet Hair Lounge along with Selina G Make Up Artist put forward their candidate, Celine Gallagher, for the 2018 Enniscrone Show Queen and why she won! Another reason for her success is because Carrie is such a genuinely nice, friendly and honest person who will always do her best to ensure that the client is 100% happy with the way they look. The customer can be confident in the knowledge that she will only offer her clients the best new styles to suit them. This comes across to all who enter her salon and that is why they keep returning. For all the lucky Brides To Be The Velvet Hair Lounge specialises in Bridal Hair and will be taking part in the Diamond Coast Hotel Wedding Inspiration on Sunday, 24th November, with Selina G Make up Artist, who will be giving Brides advice on the lead up to their wedding. Also, during November the Alfaparf Lisse Design 12 week blow-dry is €100 including homecare products. Christmas bookings are now being taken and Alfaparf, GHD gift-sets and vouchers are available.

Believe in yourself, becasue Slimway belives in you

ith over 25 years of experience working in the weight loss industry, Bernie O’Donnell is the perfect woman to provide such a business, having lost an incredible 4 stone herself. To this day she manages to keep this weight off, by maintaining her healthy living lifestyle, and wants to share her success with others to help them on their weight loss journey. “I always struggled with my weight as a teenager and thought the only way you could stay thin was to starve yourself. I never realised how easy it was to lose weight, by just focusing on a healthy diet and living a healthier lifestyle. It really knocks your confidence when you’re unhappy with your weight, so I’m glad I discovered a way to be healthier and happier in myself, and now I want to help others do the same.” With the experience of helping thousands of people lose weight over the years, Bernie has put together a heathy eating plan, backed up by the expertise of fellow Enniscrone native, Dr Michael Shannon (PHD, MBA, BSc, RGN, RPN, ONC, DIP Ed, FFNMRCSI). This easy to follow plan is packed full of mouth-watering, delicious recipes, with flavours to suit all tastes and budgets. “I wanted to create a flexible, healthy

eating plan that would suit people from all walks of life. Whether you’re a busy mum, full-time worker, student or pensioner, there’s easy to follow recipes that when followed 100% will give amazing, life changing results.” The key to losing weight and keeping it off is to not only concentrate on eating healthy foods, but accompany it with living a healthy lifestyle. That’s why Bernie has also included a program called “Slimfit” to benefit everyone taking part in the Slimway program. This aims to introduce exercise at each individual’s own pace, to get the heart racing to burn calories. “Slimfit is a way of gently introducing exercise, while doing something that you actually enjoy. There’s no need to join a gym, or a class that you have no interest or motivation to keep attending. All you need to focus on is something that gets your heart racing. Anything except sitting on a chair or lying in bed will do that. For me, my favourite form of exercise is walking, not just for fitness but for my mental health. A long walk in the fresh air boosts my mood and keeps me fit, but it’s not for everyone. You just need to find something that you enjoy and stick to it.” Slimway opened its doors 8 weeks ago and their members success is just fantastic - lots of members have lost a stone, some have lost a stone and a half, and across the board the weight losses are amazing. Plus health benefits for are members have greatly improved by following the plan Slimway “The easy way “ www.slimway.ie

Top 10 Tips When Choosing Your Wedding Venue C

hoosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task. It really doesn't have to be. Back in my wedding coordinator days i always advised brides and grooms-to-be to arrive armed with some information. This allowed me, as the wedding coordinator, to tailor the information to provide so as not to overwhelm the couple. You don’t need to have a 100% or even 20% visualisation of the day you want but there are a few essentials that are important to know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date: Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea of

what you feel you are willing to spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue: You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Mar-

quee, Glamping, Restaurant and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on your abroad location as there are

some excellent destination planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see if you can add your personal touch to it. 8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your chosen venue. If there have been

issues, you will be aware so that you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. If it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

When Inviting Children - Let Them Play by excluding children from the guest list. Hopefully everyone will understand that it’s your day, and not take offence. It will probably be the case that many of your guests - and even some parents will be pleased rather than upset,

K

ids just love a wedding. It’s probably more to do with the dressing up than anything else, but even the most cherubic loses interest fairly quickly, so you need to come up with a sure-fired remedy to keep them sweet. Professional crèches are the perfect solution. Trained individuals will arrange everything needed to keep the little darlings happy, and you’ll know they’re in a safe and secure environment, while you party on. Planning a wedding is all about decisions, and one of the trickiest is whether or not to invite children. You have to decide on this one fairly early in the planning, since

the presence of children might affect your choice of venue, and will definitely affect your numbers and budget. If you’ve got a clutch of child attendants to accompany you down the aisle, have young children of your own or the day wouldn’t be complete without the sound of children - both happy and unhappy - then you’ve already made the decision. If, on the other hand, you’re apprehensive at the thought of children’s voices possibly interrupting your ceremony, and you don’t much like the idea of them frolicking around at your reception, you have to run the risk of upsetting some of your friends

though you may lose a few who can’t arrange suitable care or are nursing young babies. If children are to be included on the guest list, you can minimise possible problems. It’s quite acceptable for ushers to have a quiet word with guests with young children,

requesting they sit at the back of the church or civil venue and take their child out if it becomes noisy. This should decrease the risk that you’ll have to listen to little Emily or Jack’s crying every time you listen to your wedding video over the following 50 years.

How to write a flawless father of the bride speech W

hat to include in your speech - Whether you intend to make it short and sweet, or to really reap the benefits of the spotlight, your speech will need to contain some basic elements if it is to be in keeping with tradition. These are… The intro You need to introduce yourself, but it doesn’t have to be reminiscent of an AA meeting. Tell them your name and maybe crack a small joke to make yourself feel relaxed. The welcome Make a formal welcome to everyone, and thank them for coming. Try to mention, in particular, the bride’s mother and the groom’s parents too.

Your daughter She’s made you pay for it, and now’s your chance to get a little of your own back on her! Recall a funny anecdote from her youth, or simply tell her how proud you are of the woman she’s become. Your son-in-law Formally welcome the groom to your family, in any way you feel appropriate. You can mention how you felt about him when you first

met him, or a moment when you’ve been particularly glad he’s around.

Parting wisdom As the elder speaker at the wedding, you should impart some of your wisdom to the happy couple about maintaining a healthy marriage or living a happy life. This is also a good place to throw in some jokes about wives, weddings or life in general, just as long as it doesn’t upset your wife! The toast Finish up by asking everyone to stand and raise a glass to the happy couple. No doubt, the best man will do something similar at the end of his speech too, but it’s the traditional way to close yours. Top tips for making it fun The father of the bride might be a mature gentleman, but that doesn’t mean your speech has to be dull. Here are some top tips to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved… Timing is everything At many weddings, fathers of brides have been known to drone on for some time, and that’s only fair. However, to keep things fun, engaging and avoiding Aunty

Doreen falling asleep in her soup, aim for a speech that lasts around six to seven minutes in total. Read your speech through at your normal speaking pace to gauge how long this really is.

Keep it clean Jokes are a great way to break the ice and loosen up the crowd, but don’t be too focused on being funny. You’re the elder statesman of the speakers today, so you can afford to be a bit more conservative in your words. That doesn’t mean you have to be full though; a few jibes at the expense of the wedding or your daughter’s love of spending money are fine, just don’t go too close to the bone. Leave it to the best man to really roast up the groom, and focus on welcoming your new son-in-law to the family and toasting the happy couple. Hold on to your emotions This is such a big occasion for you and all your family, it can be easy to get caught up in the emotion of it all. Do you best to keep things light and happy, as nobody likes to see a grown man in tears. If there are some personal things you would like to say to your daughter, but don’t want to include in your speech, write them down for her to read on the day instead.

The last word Ask any public speaker what their biggest fear is, and they’ll pretty much always say it’s forgetting where they are in their speech. Fumbling over your words and getting a bit lost is nothing to be ashamed of, provided you can make a quick recovery and get back on track okay. Take your speech on cue cards with bulletpointed reminders of what you want to talk about, rather than printing it all out in full. This will give you a more natural delivery,

and will save you having to read through several paragraphs to find your place after getting lost.

If you do get stuck, use a moment to clear your throat, take a drink of water or give your daughter a kiss. These moments might seem a lifetime to you, but will feel like a natural pause to your audience, and will give you the breathing space you need to get things back on track. Take your time, don’t panic and try to enjoy your moment of fame.

Your 12 Month Countdown To The Big Day A month by month checklist to plan your perfect wedding. 12 months Ideally, planning should begin 12 months before the big day. Decide on the style of wedding you want. Booking your reception venue is a priority. Book reception entertainment/musicians/DJ. If you’re employing a wedding consultant/planner, choose a professional with a good reputation. You’ll be spending a lot of time together, so be sure that you select a person you can get along with. 11 months Book your photographer and/or videographer. If the ceremony is to be held in a church, synagogue, mosque or other religious building, check that you will be permitted to take photographs or film there. Choose your attendants, best man and ushers and get the wedding date firmly in their diaries. If you’re holding your reception in a marquee on your own land, reserve

all the equipment you will need, including marquee, chairs, tables, etc, and book a caterer. 10 months Choose your cake maker and cake design. Confirm the menu with the reception venue. You’ll have given plenty of thought to your wedding outfits, and those of your attendants. Make your final decision. Allow at least six months for a made-to-measure dress to be completed. Start looking for accessories. If you are hiring formal wear for male members of the party place your order. Choose your wedding ring(s). 9 months If you have made a final decision on your dress, your bridesmaids’ dresses and the general theme, choose your florist and organise bouquets and buttonholes, and flowers for the church or reception. If you’re marrying in church, check that it is appropriate for you to

decorate the church (the ladies who normally decorate the church might do it for you by special arrangement), and confirm with the reception venue whether or not they are including floral decoration as part of the package. If you’ve set your heart on a particular honeymoon, book it early to avoid disappointment. If you’re undecided, start browsing the brochures and book as soon as you’ve made your choice. Remember that exotic destinations may require vaccinations and that some courses of vaccinations or drugs must start several weeks before you leave (and continue after your return). Book your flight ticket in the name on your passport. Organise your gift list. 8 months If you’re arranging a church wedding, chat to the vicar and/or organist about music. Discuss possible dates for a rehearsal, if required, and finalise the form of the service and the readings prior to having the invitations and order of service printed. If you’re having a civil wedding, choose any readings that you wish to include in the service. Send copies of your chosen readings to the person you have asked to read, so that they can practice. 7 months Have another look at your provisional guest list. Order your stationery, which includes invitations, place-cards, orders-of-service, thank-you notes, napkins, matchbooks, favours, little boxes for posting wedding cake, etc. Start looking for clothes for your

honeymoon. Check the expiry date of your passports and renew them if necessary. Some countries will deny entry if your passport is close to expiry. 6 months Book your wedding transport or make firm arrangements with family and friends about lifts or borrowing vehicles. Arrange reliable back-ups. Buy gifts for best man, attendants, etc. As soon as you have your veil, tiara or other head-dress, make an appointment with your hair stylist to discuss and try various styles. Visit beauty salons/make-up counters to discuss and try ideas. 5 months If you aren’t spending your wedding night at your reception venue, book accommodation. Either make bookings for guests (remember you will probably be able to negotiate a reduced rate for a block booking) or give them a list of local hotels/guest houses to make their own bookings. 4 months Confirm that everything you have booked so far is on course and that all friends and family involved in the arrangements are sure of their role. If the stationery hasn’t arrived, chase it up. Give the caterers your estimated number of guests. 3 months Send out the invitations and keep an up-to-date list of refusals and acceptances. Send out your thank-you notes for gifts as they arrive and keep a record of who has given what.

2 months Try on all your wedding clothes. If you are unhappy with anything, take action now. If you have left anything to others to organise, check that they have done it. Confirm your honeymoon booking. Check whether you need visas. Arrange foreign currency if necessary. Work out a seating plan for the reception. Arrange your hen and stag nights or delegate the task to your chief bridesmaid and best man. Do not hold either the night before the wedding. 1 month In all the hustle and bustle of wedding preparations, don’t forget each other. Make time for each other and if you can, don’t discuss wedding preparations. Buy each other little gifts and remember why you’re doing this. Make a plan of timings for the day and distribute a copy to everyone concerned. Make enquiries about any other events being held on the same day that might create traffic delays. If you will be moving into a new home after the wedding, arrange forwarding of post and any important changes of name. Buy a guest book to place at the reception so your friends and relatives can record messages. Delegate tasks to your friends and relatives. Make sure that somebody has your handbag, make-up, hairbrush, tissues, etc, handy, and a large umbrella in their car/in the vestry just in case. Write your speech(es). Enjoy your hen and stag nights. The planning should be over by now and it’s time to unwind, relax and look forward to the big day.

Stay curious and look for new opportunities to learn as you go through life – it’s never to late to learn an instrument, try a new hobby or master a new technique. Give back – Giving of ourselves to others helps us feel part of a community and feel our lives have meaning. Giving back can be as simple as sharing a smile with a stranger, opening a door, saying thank you or sharing a kind word with a friend. Volunteering is a

he pressures of modern life mean people are more stressed than ever before; juggling careers, health, family, finance and everything in between can take its toll if we don’t find ways to manage our stress and prioritise our wellbeing. Whether you’re navigating through a difficult time or simply trying to keep daily stresses from clouding your outlook on life, we’ve got the simple tips and tricks you need to increase your feeling of wellbeing and stay positive whatever life throws at you. Wellbeing vs happiness Mental wellbeing is about more than

just happiness. Overall wellbeing involves both the mind and body, and a deep sense of wellbeing is not just about happiness but about living in a way that’s good for us and good for others. A sense of wellbeing isn’t about eliminating all the bad things from our lives and only focusing on the things that are good and easy, but rather finding some balance and having the resilience to cope with unusual or difficult situations when they arise. Many of the things we think will improve our wellbeing – wealth, more possessions, or expensive holidays – don’t actually lead to lasting improvements on our lives. Despite Ireland being richer than ever before, evidence from census and population studies show we don’t feel any happier than we did 50 years ago despite

Be mindful – Mindfulness is an important buzzword but also a great way to improve your sense of wellbeing. At its heart, it’s all about living in the present moment and appreciating what’s around you right now. In the last 20 years, extensive research has helped psychologists narrow down a list of five key factors that help promote a real, lasting sense of mental wellbeing in our lives. Here’s what to do: Find a connection – Loneliness is especially challenging for us as we age and our families move away or friends die. Connecting with other people is essential for our sense of wellbeing, whether it’s friends, family, community members or colleagues. Time spent developing meaningful relationships contributes to a deeper sense of wellbeing. Stay active – Staying active doesn’t need to mean a rigorous workout routine. Take a walk, spend some time in your garden, go swimming or take up tennis with a friend. Finding an activity you like will make it easier to make it part of your life.

GET YOUR HOME WINTER READY 10 tips to save on your heating bill this winter

G

etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check? That’s why we love this ‘Deaerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99 6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder

from Amazon. It fits snugly around the door and it can be cut to shape. Cost: €6.99 8. Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling.

ITS TIME TO INSULATE

9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the room- turn it off when it has the job done.
