MAYO DETHRONE DUBS T

HERE can be no doubting the story of the week in the north-west . . . and probably the country as well. Memories of Mayo’s victory – and Dublin’s defeat – in that epic All-Ireland semi-final clash in Croke Park on Saturday will prevail in the annals of GAA history well into the future. The westerners had finally defeated the six-time All-Ireland champions, who were experiencing their first defeat in championship football since 2014. To say this was truly an amazing game is an understatement. In their Connacht final win over Galway, Mayo came out in the second half a transformed team. Few believed they had the capacity to do so again, particularly against a seasoned outfit like Dublin, who were six points to the good and, apparently, sailing to victory at half-time. Even as the second half progressed and Mayo were clawing their way back into the game, a Dublin capitulation seemed unlikely. It seemed that Dublin’s system of deliberately slowing up the play, holding onto possession and frustrating the opposition would see them through. But when we examine what happened on Saturday in Croke Park the Shakespearean expression “Hoist with one’s own petard” comes to mind. Continued on Page 2

Lough Key to Feature in RTÉ Travel Show W ell-known Roscommon tourist attraction Lough Key Forest Park will feature in the new series there’s “No Place Like Home” on RTÉ One. Lough Key will feature in the series during a live segment in the final episode of the show on the 12th of September. Fáilte Ireland and RTÉ One television have teamed up for the second year running to show the nation that there’s ‘No Place Like Home’ when it comes to holidays. Hosted by television presenter Kathryn Thomas, the travel series will air every Sunday for four weeks at 6:30 pm on RTÉ One, kicking off on Sunday 22nd August. ‘No Place Like Home’ builds on the success of Fáilte Ireland’s current ‘Keep Discovering’ domestic marketing campaign. Each 30-minute programme will showcase regions across Ireland, highlighting the incredible range of things to see and do and encouraging people to take short breaks this autumn. The first episode will feature Blacksod Lighthouse in County Mayo. Niall Tracey, Director of Marketing at Fáilte Ireland said: “The ‘No Place Like Home’ series proved extremely popular last year and it is fantastic to be collaborating with RTÉ once again to encourage people to take breaks at home this autumn. “The domestic market will be key over the coming months and Fáilte Ireland is continuing to drive domestic demand for the shoulder season. “No Place Like Home’ will showcase destinations and tourism businesses across Ireland and remind more Irish people to discover the joy of holidaying at home.” This year, Kathryn will explore the Wild Atlantic Way and special guests including Tolü Makay and Maïa Dunphy will visit destinations from Cork city to Kilkenny, The Shannon, and Dublin. Each episode will also feature special live segments from locations across the country. In addition to a live segment from Lough Key Forest Park, the final episode, on Sunday 12th September, will showcase destinations across West Cork as Kathryn goes kayaking in Baltimore and visits Sherkin Island, Inis Beg, Ballydehob, and Mizen Head.

Mayo dethrone Dubs As Mayo applied the pressure in the second half Dublin’s system seemed to run completely out of rope, evidenced particularly in the incident when a Dublin defender was forced to deflect the ball over his own end line, leading to the “45” which Rob Hennelly eventually converted. Unlike heretofore, this Mayo team seemed to possess boundless energy and when they began to turn the tables, scuppering Dublin by their own schemes, the Leinster champions had no answer and began to adopt some uncharacteristically cynical measures as they ran out of steam in extra time. An example of Mayo’s resolve was epitomised in an extraordinary feat of flexibility by Diarmuid O’Connor when he prevented another Hennelly free from crossing the end line, deflecting it infield and towards the sideline, to be picked up by Kevin McLoughlin, who converted a glorious point at a crucial time in the game. Six points in arrears, the pundits gave little chance to Mayo at half-time. But here manager James Horan has to be complimented on his game management – the ability to make appropriate changes at the correct times and get his match-ups right. The substitution of captain Aiden O’Shea and the introduction of young, vibrant and pacey players like Enda Hession and Bryan Walsh provided the impetus needed as the game progressed. The muchvaunted Dublin “bench” proved just a shadow of what Mayo had to offer and we now understand what Horan meant when

he spoke about the strength and depth of his squad. In that unforgettable first period of extra time it was Mayo that possessed the energy reserves and scooped the turnovers, providing the fuel for four unanswered points - the game’s most spectacular scores - from Tommy Conroy (2), Coen and O’Donoghue – to put the game beyond Dublin’s reach. It was at this point, too, that the influence of Keegan, Durcan and the amazing Padraig O’Hora came to the fore, particularly Keegan, who had one of his greatest days in the Mayo jersey, with vital interceptions and challenges as well as forward movements. They snuffed out

any possibility of a late recovery by Dublin, who looked a spent force at that stage. Of course, it’s not all over yet. Both Kerry and Tyrone still have a say in the destination of Sam for 2021. But Mayo deserve a short respite to relish such a sweet victory over the old adversary. It is also appropriate to compliment a fine Roscommon team for a gallant performance, before coming up just short against a highly-talented Offaly team in the U-20 All-Ireland championship. Let’s hope they continue to progress and form the nucleus of the Roscommon senior team going forward, raising the general standard of football in the province.

pod of stranded dolphins were rescued from a beach in north Mayo last week. The rescue mission was launched by Mayo Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) members after receiving a report that dolphins had live stranded on Tarmon beach in Blacksod. Thanking the local community, visitors and gardaí who assisted the 13 common dolphins, Mayo IWDG explained on their social media that the dolphins were a family group of 13 individuals, mainly mothers and calves and a big male. Unfortunately, three died before they could be helped. With the tide still dropping for another 1.5 hours, the sun shining and the dolphins responding to being cooled it was decided to move the pod by road to the slip at Blacksod - two kilometres away - where they could continue to receive care in deeper water. Mayo IWDG explained: 'The new IWDG wheeled dolphin stretcher ferried the larger

U2R1 Weing Ca dolphins across the beach to an awaiting horse-box and the juveniles were moved via large beach towels in tandem with their mothers. 'All mother and calf pairs were lined up semi submerged on banks of seaweed on the shoreline beside Blacksod slip and continued to receive care until the rest of the pod arrived by road. 'Once all dolphins had spent time being supported in the water by everyone and one made a dash for freedom, the rest of the group were released. 'The juveniles were calling to the adults. All swam upright unassisted into deeper water quickly and none rolled or bellied up, which can often happen to dolphins who have live stranded. 'As of 21:00 , the group had left the area and couldn’t be found. Let’s hope they make it.' Tarmon and the surrounding beaches on the east side of the mullet peninsula are

notorious for common dolphins live stranding due to the topography of the beaches, say Mayo IWDG. They explained: 'The beaches are large flat expanses so during spring tides especially, the water can level can drop uniformly and recede up to 1km in parts. Common dolphins being an offshore dolphin species often get caught out on such difficult to navigate shallow terrain. 'When a dolphin live strands it puts immense pressure on their bodies, they can become very disorientated and have muscle spasm from the stranding event making it difficult to swim, which is why this group were given recovery time at Blacksod before being released. 'Thanks again to everyone who helped out. It was so humbling to see everyone work together to get this pod back to the sea. 'If anyone would like to become involved with the IWDG stranding network please drop us a message.'

Castlebar’s Gerry Casey appointed to IRFU executive Popular and well-known Castlebar businessman Gerry Casey has recently been appointed to the executive of the IRFU. According to a report in the Connacht Telegraph he was congratulated on his appointment at a recent club meeting by newly-appointed club president at a recent meeting during which many tributes were paid to Gerry "Gerry has been a great servant to Castlebar as a player and as a coach and I have no doubt he will bring his skill set to his role as a member of the national executive, where he will be a very strong voice for Connacht rugby given his vast experience over a long and successful career both on and off the field," said Mr. Staunton. Meanwhile, competitive rugby will return to Castlebar next week

with the opening game in the Cawley Cup. Mr. Staunton said it was great to see rugby back after such a long lay-off and he wished the teams and coaches involved in the club the very best of luck for the coming season. "We are fortunate to have a very strong committee at the club and there is a lot of work being done behind the scenes preparing for the new season. "We are always looking for new members and I would urge parents to bring their kids to the underage training sessions, which will be starting later in the year." It will be all systems go for the start of the rugby season for Castlebar who get their season off the ground with an away game to Creggs in the first round of the Cawley Cup this Sunday. Head coach Simon O’Malley said the squad is in good shape and looking forward to the season, which will see Castlebar defending their Connaught Junior Cup title later in the year, while the league will also provide them with seven games on a home and away basis. O’Malley will be freshening up things this season with the upgrading of a few of the Under 18 panel who will be given their senior debut in the Cawley Cup and the league. "We have more or less the same panel as last year but we will be bringing in a few of the Under 18 lads who will be given the chance to step up a level, so it should be an interesting season’’, he said. The draw for the Connacht Junior Cup has yet to be made but Castlebar, who are joint defending champions with Connemara following the decision to cancel the final due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be determined to defend their title.

Time for action on nation’s mental health - Deputy Marc MacSharry W HILE much of the press coverage over the past months concerning Sligo-Leitrim Fianna Fail Deputy Marc MacSharry has centred on his consistent calls for a change in the leadership of Fianna Fail the focus may have turned in July to his efforts to highlight the deteriorating mental health of the nation with the continuing restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Deputy MacSharry, in conjunction with Dylan McKenna Murphy, has produced a highly-informative research paper on the impact of the virus and the various restrictions and wants mental health funding to be increased to 15% of the overall health budget. “Now More Than Ever - Covid-19 Impact on Mental Health and Proposed Actions” includes the findings of consultations with 500 people – GPs, Counsellors, Gardai, Coroners, Charities Student Bodies and others over seven months. According to the Deputy, “the loss of loved ones, friends or colleagues has undoubtedly been the greatest tragedy and the heaviest burden which many have had to endure, the memory of which we will carry forward for years to come. In parallel to this loss, our nation’s silent crisis (mental health) unfortunately deteriorated to a very significant extent.” Even in pre-pandemic Ireland much more needed to be done about the issues of suicide, alcohol and substance addition. With the arrival of Covid-19 and the concentration on lengthy full/partial lockdowns periods and vaccine availability as our sole policy the situation has got much worse. The research undertaken sought identify the precise impact of such an onedimensional Covid-management strategy. “This paper sets out the research together with an ancillary published data and international literature, and makes recommendations as to what can and should be done to counteract the Covid-related deterioration of our nation’s mental health.” Ironically, the research paper was released during a week when the government introduced and passed legislation to enable the re-opening of indoor hospitality for those who are fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 in the past six months. Deputy MacSharry, who was absent from the vote which took place on Wednesday night, said he didn’t like the totalitarian approach towards keeping people safe. We have to balance public health advice with all aspects of health, including mental health and the needs of a functioning society. There’s a local angle in the research document which features two case studies, one by the Sligo-based Social Ground Force and the Leitrim-based Stop Suicide. Even in the Introduction to the research a study conducted by Maynooth University and Trinity Collage was highlighted. It found high levels of anxiety and loneliness among the Irish people, with nearly one in four experiencing clinically meaningful levels of depression and close to one in five experiencing anxiety and PTSD related issues. RESEARCH KEY FINDINGS: The results from targeted respondents from the aforementioned sectors familar and working with mental health related disciplines were as follows:

• 91% agreed that Covid-19 has detrimentally affected the mental health and wellbeing of Irish society while a similar percentage agree that mental health services will require more funding in order to deal with mental health issues which arise as a result of Covid-19. • 86% agreed that the Covid-19 pandemic will have long-term effect on the mental health and wellbeing of Irish society. • 88% agreed that the Government has not done enough to address the mental health impacts of Covid-19. • 91% say mental health services will require more resources to address impacts of Covid19. • From GPs and Psychotherapists: 70.6% of respondents have noticed a marked increase in people presenting with mental health concerns between the months of MarchDecember, 2020, the increase ranging from 15% to over 100%. • 65% say there has been an increase in the presentation of people with suicidal concerns from March-December 2020 with said increase ranging from 2% to 90%. • 100% of Gardai surveyed reported an increase in domestic violence from MarchDecember 2020, averaging 35%. •100% of Gardai have also noticed an increase in calls relating to mental health concerns, averaging 30%. • The research has revealed a lack of consideration by the State on the impacts of Covid-19 restrictions on mental health. • Mental health services nationally “woefully” underfunded. • The Research findings have also been backed up by the majority of academic peer reviewed literature.

RESPONSE AND PROPOSALS: In response to the findings Deputy MacSharry wishes to see a number of policy changes in the approach to mental health. He says that in the 1980s the proportion of the overall health budget allocated to mental health was 14-16%. The 2020 Budget saw this amount falling to 6.3% - despite the fact that the Slaintecare health proposals call for

a minimum investment in mental health programmes and international best practice points to a figure of around 16%. He is calling for the mental health percentage to be increased to 15%. The Research also called for the full and urgent implementation of Sharing the Vision – “A Mental Health Policy for Everyone” published in June 2020. This should be a key priority.

OTHER PROPOSALS: • Mental Health funding to be increased to 15% of annual health budget. • Mental Health funding of charities and Section 39 Sector to be linked directly to outcomes • No more lockdowns. Keep people safe but keep society functioning • Expand online Mental Health service resources • Increase focus in education on mental health and wellbeing • Outreach campaign to target key groups affected by the pandemic • Full and urgent implementation of “Sharing the Vision” • Set up a statutory body to regulate titles of counsellor and psychotherapist. • Acknowledge alcohol and drugs as mental health issues exacerbated by Covid-10 pandemic • State and media reporting and communications to be more responsible. • Special focus on all frontline workers.

In relation to online services many respondents indicated that the promotion of a free 4/7/365 online mental health counselling and support service is necessary. This would improve access for younger and disadvantaged people who cannot access support or afford private care. While the HSE’s “yourmentalhealth.ie service is there some respondents, particularly those engaged in medical general practice and psychotherapy said this resource was not sufficient to deal with the increase in mental health difficulties experienced by people as a result of the pandemic.

Mulranny Beach

HERE is no doubt, but that the increased use of camper vans at or close to beaches this year is a cause for some concern. A senior official with Mayo County Council has suggested that users of a campervan deposited waste in the water close to a popular Blue Flag beach. An incident occurred in Mulranny at the end of July and concerns were raised over the quality of the water around the Blue Flag beach near the west Mayo beauty spot. While a no swimming warning was not issued, testing of the water was carried out which confirmed the presence of a substance which could have had an adverse affect on the water quality. Earlier this month, a no swim notice was issued on Bertra beach after increased levels of e-coli was detected and Martin Keating, the head of the environment section of Mayo County

Council, told a meeting of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District yesterday that it is suspected that waste from a camper van was the source of problem. There has been a significant increase in the number of people travelling around the county in camper vans since the Covid pandemic and Mr Keating admitted that this has not been matched by the services and facilities to cater for them. This, he said, has resulted in a rise in wild camping which brings its issues which they have to address. According to a report in Mayo News Mr. Keating said: “We have been working closely on the keep ‘Mayo Wild and Beautiful’ campaign and focusing attention on issues that arise with the significant increase in people visiting the county. We give practical advice to people on how they can visit us without

causing damage or harm to the environment.” He said they will increase the wild and beautiful campaign to try to combat further instances of this happening. Earlier this summer, Keem Bay on Achill Island was one of the most popular locations for wild camping with concerns it was leading to littering and damage to the landscape caused by camp fires. In recent weeks, Mayo County Council introduced by-laws prohibiting overnight camping and parking with increased patrols of the area. Achill councillor Paul McNamara complimented the council on all the work they have done in the area regarding wild camping and said there has to be some control over it. “We do not want to have a great summer and then find out the following year that one of our Blue Flag beaches do not qualify because we took no action on wild camping.”

nclement weather did not dampen spirits and the atmosphere as hundreds lined the streets on Friday last for the start of the RETRO Cannonball event in Ballina. Departing from the Crockets at the Quay at 10 am over 40 very rare Retro Supercars made their way through the key streets in the town before heading for Sligo, the next stop on the route. The event is sponsored by BRÚ Brewery. Members of the local Lions, Ballina Community Clean-up and other organisations played their part in stewarding to ensure a safe and efficient passage for the cavalcade as it passed through the town in very wet conditions.

The classic car road trip make its way up to Donegal through Sligo and overnight in Letterkenny, then on to Malin Head and through Derry and Antrim taking in The Giant’s Causeway and finished in Belfast on Saturday at 6pm. 75 Retro Cars including some very rare Retro Supercars took part, including the rare and iconic Ferrari Dino GTS, a Lamborghini Diablo, an MG Midget, a Chevrolet Corvette, a classic VW Beetle, and many more. The road-trip was fully compliant with government COVID-19 guidelines and an outdoor event. The car enthusiasts who came out to see the cars on the route were asked to adhere to the advice of the Cannonball

COVID-19 marshals and everything passed off safely. This year Cannonball Ireland and RETRO Cannonball will raise funds for The HOPE Foundation, an Irish Charity working with the street children of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India. Spectators and friends of Cannonball were asked to please donate what they can directly to HOPE via the link: https://www.hopefoundation.ie/cannonball/ Registration is also now open for Cannonball Ireland, the supercar event, taking place on September 17th-19th this year. CO-HOUSING – Sligo man’s community-led housing option for older people W HEN the Government recently voiced the possibility of introducing tax incentives and grants in a bid to entice older people to consider downsizing their homes, the suggestion was met with a mixed reaction. The idea, which is far from finalised, forms part of the government’s ‘Housing For All’ plan. Its aim is to help alleviate the housing crisis and while some homeowners lauded the idea, admitting their interest in the prospect, others took to mainstream media to voice their disgust, pointing out that they were in no way responsible for solving the housing crisis. With a campaign now underway to build more homes and apartments for older people, Sligo businessman Ronan Gilroy has proposed what he believes to be a far more effective housing model, namely that of cohousing. In an interview with North West Express Ronan explains firstly why the term ‘co-housing’ can generate the wrong impression when people are first introduced to it. “Everyone hears the word ‘co’ and then their brain fills in the rest,” Ronan explains. “The former Minister Murphy tried to promote the idea of co-living. Co-living means you have a glorified hotel room and en-suite where you must share all facilities kitchen etc. “Co-living (which has valid applications; students, short-term lets, etc.) is highly profit driven and is developer led. Co-housing on the other hand is community led. It comes under the heading of ‘community led housing’ which is growing massively in other cities all around the world. The best examples of it are the co-housing model where people have their own independent home and their own utilities, but there is a common house. A common house

Ronan Gilroy’s vision of a CLH (Community Led Housing) model with rooftop plots, activity, pathway to absorb the therapeutic views over Sligo’s rooflines.

has spare rooms, a large kitchen, and a large additional event space and that can be used by the community for cooking together coworking spaces or to accommodate their visitors if they have some staying over. It also means their homes don’t have to have that spare room in it now, so they can be built that little bit more efficiently. In a common house, people come together, and they take turns to cook maybe twice or three times a week, whatever it is they sign up to as an intentional community. That’s the key term, intentional community.” Co-housing, a model that is already popular across Europe, is one that Ronan is keen to see become a

valid option for people in Ireland. He feels the current options are limited and lack inclusivity and wants what he calls an ‘option C’ to be made available to older people who want to be closer to others but don’t want either of the existing options, those being, a nursing home or retirement village. Ronan adds, “’Rightsizing’ or ‘downsizing’ should be better communicated by giving people options. The way it is at the moment is when you get older and IF you want to find a different more economical house to live in, but more importantly somewhat closer to others, your options are A/ a nursing home and B/ a retirement village. There is no option C. There

Savoy Village – Sligo Courthouse Block. This is an innovative approach with two housing models – a CLH and a HwS (Housing with Supports) - model co-located.

are no other options in Ireland. I’m 44. At the rate we’re going in Ireland, I have to start shouting now if I want option C. I’m a landowner of a site inside Sligo town that is derelict for 20 something years. For the past 4 years, I have been speaking to my council trying to get them to consider modern housing models not just for my site but to get them to look at the model of co-housing.” Ronan points out that the main benefits of the co-housing proposal are, affordability, sustainability, and the benefit of being closer to others. While co-housing can be multigenerational, it can also be tailored to a specific category. Ronan cites one example in England where there is an ‘older women’s co-housing development.’ Alongside the co-housing model, Ronan firmly maintains there is an additional need for ‘housing with supports’. He recalls how the need for such first occurred to him. “There is another example in Naas, called McCauley Place.” Ronan explains, “It’s co-housing for 65 year old people and older. It’s the nicest community I have ever visited. A resident, Denis, gave me a tour around the facility, and everything was so perfect that I had to ask the question ‘what’s wrong with the place? Any problems with it?’ Denis explained that yes there was one problem. One resident had a problem with her back, and it meant that she couldn’t care for herself any longer. Even though she was cognitively perfect, she had to move quite far away. She was ripped away from her community and the community lost a good friend and it made me think, wouldn’t it be ideal if she had the option to move nearby into an assisted living type of facility? One thing that stood out to me was a

publication by the health and housing ministers and it’s called ‘Housing Options for an Ageing Population’ and case number 8, St. Michael’s in Dublin’s Inchicore, a new housing model. It’s called ‘housing with supports’.” Ronan adds, “’Housing with supports’, maybe it’s a new branded name for ‘assisted living’ just under a new government but it seems to be the model that could give people with disabilities some dignity and give them a sense of independence. They have their own home, but the design of the building is such that it’s adaptable. Rona Ronan pictured “They’re designed in such a way that they allow for modification going forward. My point on this is wouldn’t it be ideal if we could plan going forward, all the building that’s done – any state supported building that goes forward – is housing with supports models, like support nodes and co-housing or community led type models; that they are located in urban settings, so what you’re left with are options for regular people or people who have needs, and then you have other housing stock that gets freed up.” While some may propose the age old solution of social housing, Ronan believes the ripple effect from the implementation of cohousing would instead reduce the need for social. Should cohousing be a success, Ronan says it would in turn free up property that could then be used by young families. “In the case of the need for social housing, what Ireland tends to do is build clusters of social, and the designs that the government build are institutional in appearance, let’s be honest. The residents of this type of housing get labelled.

11

Northwest Express August, 2021 What I’m trying to say is accommodate the lonely person out in the sticks in his own home, ageing … although let me state though that nobody should be asked to do anything they don’t want to do; some people when they reach a certain age will never move, that’s just the way things are … but at the moment, we’re not giving any opportunity to people who are in that window where they are a bit more broadminded and open to opportunity.” He adds, “With the money an older person might get for their house, they could buy themselves a new affordable unit in the co-housing development in the local village or town. They’re freeing up a property that a young family could buy and have time to renovate if necessary. We are recycling existing buildings and we’re being sustainable by doing that. We don’t then have the government spending money on adapting ‘every’ homes for an ageing population. It’s a matter of thinking a little more broadly about new housing models.” The idea of ‘rightsizing’ however is not for everyone. Following the Government’s proposal, Gerry O’Leary (64) appeared on Newstalk radio to voice his anger over the situation, insisting that he will not be selling his house. He told the show, “If the Government want to encourage people to rightsize, and let’s be quite honest, it’s actually downsize, they’d want to be able to produce a building or a property that will be equal or better than what I’m in at the moment. I’m enraged that anyone would even suggest or even prefer an argument that because of my age that I should consider getting rid of my house and downsizing.” He further stated, “Something that I’ve worked at for 40+ years, and I retired some years ago, how dare anybody tell me that I should downsize or get rid of my house so that somebody else can get it.” Gerry added, “If the Government cannot at the moment, or will not, provide adequate housing for society... if they turn around then and say that because Gerry O’Leary is 64-yearsold or whatever and that he should really downsize: how dare anybody tell me that I should downsize. I’m holding on to my house, by the way... for my daughter, so that she can get a house. She will not be able to get a mortgage because it’s too expensive to buy a house. How can anybody tell me, or how dare anybody tell me, I should really get rid of my house so that somebody else can have it. People can’t afford to buy it because they can’t get a mortgage, and the Government won’t do anything about it. It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek by the Government to even suggest [this]” Gerry also pointed out that the Government’s proposal should be directed at people with two 2+ homes and not the elderly. “As an elderly person I want something that I can live in for the rest of my days and hand over - why don’t you get some of the younger people who have one and two properties, or three properties, let them give up their home to the Government who have failed to provide adequate housing. It’s not my fault” Ronan, who owns a site in Sligo town, is keen to see it be utilised for his proposal of community led housing as opposed to standard flats and commercial buildings. He points out that there is a need for the revitalisation of Ireland’s towns, and argues that the government should focus on the construction of communities within towns rather than flats where neighbours are essentially strangers. Councils guidance document; ‘Courthouse Block Framework Plan’ calls for a mixed development which really only stands for commercial, at ground level, and some flats above. “WhatI’m trying to say to the council is do you want to put in more of the same lonely flats where people don’t even know their neighbour, or do you want to put a community in the centre of your town? We suffer like many other towns in Ireland in that they are hollowing out; the term ‘Town-Centers-First-Principle’ encompasses these issues and the importance of maintaining vitality. “We have higher vacancies; we’ve got the challenge of retail and tech in that a lot of valuable indigenous retailers aren’t able to compete with the Amazons and the Googles and the big tech of this world. Even facebook, while giving the appearance of enabling business operate from home or a garage, it’s corroding urban centres. We have to find new ways to revitalise our towns. The government thinks we can just put people into flats above shops when most of the people who even suggest this don’t even live there themselves. Town centres can be noisy and generally they’re <the flats> not as well insulated. We can, however, build smarter in how we design clusters and how we provide alternative options for an ageing population. “I want to see homes and warm mixed generation communities in our urban centres going forward. What’s special about ‘Savoy Village’ is the extended possibilities of both communities learning or earning within the commercial level / new streets below enhancing the vitality, maybe even attracting new visitors to this town centre” To learn more about the model of co-housing, please check out the website www.cohousing.group. OPEL CROSSLAND - STYLISH VERSATILITY Editorial by brEda Corrigan

t

he new Crossland is the first model to adopt opel’s unmistakable new ‘Vizor’ face, which was showcased just a few months ago by the new opel Mokka (due on sale in ireland soon). Physically integrating the grille and headlights, the opel Vizor on the new Crossland extends in one single sweep across the front of the vehicle, and provides the fascia with a reduced amount of elements, while opel’s legendary lightning-flash emblem proudly dominates the centre.. the Vizor will become a hallmark of all opel models in the course of the 2020’s with the idea of further integrating new technologies along the way. at the rear, new darktinted tail-lights enhance the signature opel wing light design, and the new high-gloss black tailgate surface (available in combination with the black roof) makes the new Crossland look wider and stronger. as with the forth-coming Mokka, the opel Crossland dispenses with the Xappendix that adorned its predecessor.

Dynamic Driving Experience in order to prove that the new Crossland is much more than just a pretty face, opel’s engineers have further developed the chassis and steering of the car to deliver a dynamic driving experience. the new Crossland is crisp and compact on the outside, but very spacious and versatile on the inside, with sliding rear seats (Elite trim) designed to enhance cabin or boot space – depending on the need. With the rear seats in their rearmost position, an impressive 410-litres of space is on offer. However, this can be extended to 520-litres with the rear seats in their foremost position, or increased to a vast

1,255-litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Engine & Trim Options Engine options in the new Crossland consist of a 3-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol unit with 83bhp (5speed manual) or 130bhp (6-speed automatic), and a 4-cylinder 1.5litre turbo-diesel with 110bhp (6-speed manual) or 120bhp (6speed automatic), with all engines designed to meet strict Euro 6d emission standards. trim levels consist of SC, Sri and range-topping Elite, with an impressive array of standard equipment across all trim levels.

Test Car My test car was an opel Crossland 1.2-litre 83bhp Sri model, which was finished in White Jade solid paint, with contrasting black mirror casings, black roof and black alloy wheels. the 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 83bhp and 118nm of torque, enabling the 0100km/h sprint to be completed in 14.0-seconds, on the way to a top speed of 170km/h. With WltP fuel consumption as low as 5.9l/100km on a combined driving cycle, the new Crossland promises to be easy to live with, and easy on the pocket too. the Crossland’s light steering makes it easy to nip in

and out of lanes of traffic in an urban setting, and also helps with low-speed manoeuvres, while maintaining excellent stability at motorway speeds. the 5-speed manual gearbox in my test car was slick and precise in its operation, and all major controls inside the car are within easy reach of the driver. Key Sri standard features include 16” alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, bluetooth™, apple CarPlay™, android auto™, FM/aM/dab radio, 7” capacitive multimedia touchscreen, remote central locking with alarm, parking sensors front and rear, rear camera, agr ergonomic driver’s

seat with 8-way adjustment and cushion extension, driver’s centre armrest, air-conditioning with particle and odour filter, electric child lock function, iSoFiX child seat anchorage points x 2, enhanced traffic sign recognition, Hill Start assist and lane departure Warning, along with many more comfort, convenience, safety and security features. the Crossland’s interior fit and finish is excellent, with plush, soft-touch materials used throughout the cabin, along with some neat chrome and gloss black finishers for an upmarket look. Headroom in the cabin is excellent, while foot space under the front seats provides additional legroom for rear seat passengers. additionally, the central tunnel that runs along the Crossland’s floor isn’t as pronounced as it is in its competitors, thereby ensuring the middle rear seat passenger doesn’t lose out in terms of leg room either. Pricing & Special Offer Pricing for the new opel Crossland starts at just €22,395, with my test car specification priced from just €23,895. right now, opel has exclusive finance offers, only available at your local opel dealer and for a limited period. Choose the opel model that’s right for you, and benefit from opel’s incredible low-cost 2.9% aPr PCP and HP finance rate, along with 3 years’ FrEE servicing, giving opel customers a little bit more peace of mind in these uncertain times.

VOLVO XC40 PHEV - UNPLUG AND PLAY EDIToRIAL BY BREDA CoRRIGAN

V

olvo Cars brought a new safety standard to the small premium SUV segment with the launch of the new Volvo XC40 in 2018. Being the first car to be built on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the Volvo XC40 is one of the safest cars in its segment thanks to its inheritance of safety and support technologies from the brand’s S90/V90 and XC60 models.

‘Cognitive Load’ Reduction; Modern city life presents complex challenges for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. This is why the new Volvo XC40 was designed to reduce driver distraction and the so-called ‘cognitive load’ on the driver. With safety and driver assistance systems actively identifying and mitigating potential conflicts, the driving becomes more relaxed and enjoyable. The Volvo XC40 successfully blends comfort and cruising refinement, allowing the occupants to enjoy the trendy, minimalist cabin and the wonderful infotainment system. Youthful Character; Based on looks alone, the Volvo XC40 is noticeably more youthful than its larger siblings – the XC60 and XC90. Ian Kettle – the designer of the XC40 - said that the inspiration for the car’s styling came from small robots that he saw in science-fiction movies. This resulted in the application of simple, clean, resolved lines - and an appearance that manages to

look chunky and cute at the same time. It’s helped by a further evolution of Volvo’s ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlight motif at the front end. There’s more scope for personalisation than on the XC60 and XC90 too, thanks to contrasting roof colours on some versions (black or white, depending on the trim level).

Petrol or PHEV; The Volvo XC40 was initially available with a choice of petrol or diesel engines, but the option of a diesel unit has been eliminated in favour of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, referred to as a ‘Recharge Plug-In Hybrid’. Trim options consist of Momentum (petrol only), R-Design & R-Design Pro (petrol or PHEV) and Inscription & Inscription Pro (petrol or PHEV), with frontwheel-drive standard across the range. Manual or automatic transmissions are available in the petrol-powered models, with the Recharge model coming with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Standard equipment across the entire range includes alloy wheels, LED headlights with ‘Thor Hammer’ LED daytime driving lights, a 12.3-inch Active TFT Crystal drivers information display, Rear Park Assist, cruise control with speed limiter, Hill Start Assist, Hill Decent Control, tyre pressure monitoring system, heated front seats, auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors, alarm system, multiple airbags, road-sign information system,

Driver Alert Control with Lane Keeping Aid and many other safety, security and comfort features.

Test Car; My test car was a new Volvo XC40

Recharge PHEV Inscription Pro finished in Pebble Grey metallic paint with contrasting Arianne Leather Blonde & Charcoal seating. The luxuriously-appointed Inscription Pro specification is based on the Momentum specification but also includes key features, such as a poweradjustable drivers seat with memory function (also includes memory for exterior mirrors), silver front & rear skid plates, power-operated tailgate, heated front seats, heated windscreen & headlight cleaning system, heated washer nozzles, active bending headlights, front LED fog lights with cornering function, front & rear park assist with a rear camera, and chrome window trim for a truly distinctive look. The 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine works in conjunction with an electric motor (which is powered by a 10.7kWh Lithium-Ion battery) to produce 262PS (258bhp) and a hefty 425Nm of torque. As a result, a 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 7.3-seconds, while an electric-only range of up to 45kms is available from a full battery. Charging the battery from empty to 100% in the XC40 Recharge can be performed in around 6 hours from a standard three-pin plug, while connecting a Type 2 cable to a wall box will perform the same task in around 2.5 hours. Volvo claim fuel consumption as low as 2.1l/100km on a combined driving

cycle (when used within appropriate battery charging recommendations), while an emission figure of 47g/km leads to annual road tax of just €170.

Verdict; During my time with the new XC40 Recharge PHEV, I found it to be very sure-footed on a variety of road surfaces, while overall driving dynamics were excellent. The car handles extremely well, steers precisely and feels great from behind the multi-function steering wheel. Strong performance from the hybrid powertrain, along with impressive levels of refinement and composure ensure that every journey in the XC40 Recharge is pleasurable. With demand for premium SUV’s at an all-time high across the world, it looks like Volvo’s timing in launching the wonderful XC40 Recharge PHEV is absolutely perfect - much like the XC40 itself.

Pricing; Pricing for the new Volvo XC40 Recharge PHEV range starts at €47,772 (inclusive of a €5,000 SEAI grant for private customers – subject to terms & conditions), while the XC40 in petrol engine guise is priced from €38,297. With the new XC40 having won the coveted European Car of the Year award for 2018, and the Irish Car of the Year award for 2019, it is testament to just how good the Volvo XC40 is.

HE decision by one of the West’s largest law firms, Callan Tansey, to spread its legal tentacles and open an office in Ballina has to be seen as a vote of confidence in the town and North Mayo. During the opening ceremony, the Firm’s joint managing partner, Roger Murray, said Callan Tansey was happy to have chosen the West as a base to build a national brand. It was an attractive alternative (to the east coast) in which to live and work. Their success to date was a tribute to the hard work, loyalty and commitment of their staff who live and breathe the work they do. He stressed their core values – commitment, courage, integrity and compassion. The Firm has offices in Boyle and Sligo since 2008, recently an office in Dublin and now in Ballina. They have a total staff of 50, which includes 18 solicitors (including partners), and 4 trainees. In 2016 they were voted Connacht Law Firm of the Year and are one of the top three firms in Ireland in the Medical Negligence field. Representing Callan Tansey in Ballina will be Associate Solicitor David O’Malley, who lives in Ballina with his wife, Muiriosa, and four children. David possesses all of the aforementioned qualities in abundance. Graduating with a BCL qualification from NUIG in 2004 and obtaining a Masters in European Law in UL he lectured for a time in NUIG before commencing an apprenticeship with Damien Tansey & Associates in 2006. He qualified as a solicitor in 2009. David specialises in medical negligence and personal injuries litigation and his clients have received very high Court awards, for which he has received a lot of positive press publicly. He talked to Mayo Now about the genesis of his move to Ballina. “A lot of people were coming from Ballina to Sligo to seek our legal services, so

we commenced legal clinics in the town. After carrying out a cost-benefit analysis the Partners determined there was an opening there. It seemed the practical thing to do, as there were many clients coming our way from the region. For me it is a very exciting step, to be closer to my family, my home and the community I am involved with”. David’s father, John, is a native of Bellacorick, and also lives in Ballina with his wife, Margaret, originally from Crossmolina. In terms of the Firm’s brand David spoke about the ethos the Firm was endeavouring to build and looked forward to the future impact on his home town. Callan Tansey are primarily client focused – putting people first. An important objective is to take the unwieldy image out of law. They are a boutique-type firm with what he called an ethos of “approachable excellence”. Callan Tansey’s structure consists of a number of departments, each specialising in its own law field with each department building a nationwide reputation for excellence. They are community orientated and embrace corporate social responsibility. Specialists from each Department will be available to the new location. Callan Tansey is a young, dynamic firm with Niamh Ní Murchú, Partner in charge of brand development. They access the universities directly to get the best talent and have quality internship and apprenticeship programmes. Two young solicitors from Mayo – Amy Kelly (Ballina) and Avril Flannery (Knock) are the latest to join the fold and an objective will be to continue to recruit the best local talent. Undoubtedly, the addition of this progressive law firm with an outstanding reputation will enhance the legal services options within the local community. Callan Tansey’s Ballina office can be contacted at 096-71618.

MENOPAUSE, SLEEP, AND RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME S

leep is elusive enough for many women in menopause. You’re exhausted, desperate to get just a few hours of uninterrupted REM; you start to drift off at last, when suddenly leg pain starts… Tingling, then pins-and-needles, then throbbing, then an overwhelming urge to move your leg, which brings relief, for maybe a minute against these painful symptoms, until the whole thing starts again. According to the National Institutes of Health, Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) affects up to 10 percent of adults in the US, and it’s more common in women than men. It’s also more common in older people, meaning a lot of sufferers are women in menopause.

What is Restless Leg Syndrome? RLS sufferers generally report unpleasant sensations in the leg – tingling, electric shock, itching, crawling, throbbing, muscle cramps – plus an irresistible urge to move. It may affect both legs or just one. It may move from one leg to the other, and for up to 80 percent of RLS sufferers, it’s accompanied by the jerking or twitching of legs and arms, known as PLMS or periodic limb movement of sleep. Restless Legs Syndrome is classified as a “sleep disorder” because symptoms generally start in the evening and worsen through the night. Obviously, restless leg syndrome can have a huge impact on the quality and quantity of sleep. Moving generally relieves the symptoms temporarily, meaning someone with RLS may feel compelled to shift positions constantly or even get up and walk around. Many find that symptoms disappear for a time in the very early morning, allowing for at least a little sleep – that is, if you don’t have other issues keeping you awake. What Causes RLS? Like so many neurological disorders, the exact cause isn’t well understood. It can be genetic; in fact, in most cases in which symptoms show up before age 40, there’s a

genetic component. It’s possible that RLS is caused by the part of the brain that controls movement – the basal ganglia. If that area cannot utilize the brain chemical dopamine properly, the disruption could cause the sensations and involuntary movements of RLS. Other factors that may contribute to the development of RLS include: • Iron deficiency • Renal disease • Medications such as anti-nausea, antipsychotic, antidepressants (which are frequently prescribed for women in menopause) • Cold and allergy meds • Pregnancy, especially toward the end, can trigger RLS, though it generally disappears a month or so after delivery. • Nerve damage has shown to be related in some cases. • Smoking, caffeine, and booze: three of the usual suspects for menopause symptoms. • How could perimenopause or menopause be a factor? Many women in perimenopause who suffer heavy bleeding may have an iron deficiency, so that could contribute. Also, it’s thought estrogen helps muscles relax, so as estrogen declines, we lose that natural relaxant.

How Do I Stop Leg Pain? Now that you know what it is, how can you treat your restless leg syndrome and stop your leg pain? The first things to look at may include the list of “other factors” above – are you taking any of the medications, nearing the end of a pregnancy, or getting enough iron? When those conditions change, you may find your RLS goes away. Diabetes is also a related condition that can worsen RLS, so if you have other risk factors for diabetes, you might want to be tested. If you’ve been diagnosed, check with your doctor to be sure it’s being managed correctly. If none of those are causing your RLS, there are things you can do. As ever, we suggest lifestyle changes first:

1. Bump up your iron and magnesium Increasing both of these can help. Magnesium supplements help muscles relax, and it’s possible some cases of RLS are triggered (or worsened) by a magnesium deficiency. Both supplements can cause digestive upset, so talk to a doctor, add them carefully, and try to increase your intake primarily through food.

2. Eat for menopause. If hormone changes may be affecting RLS (aka low estrogen levels), adding back some estrogen via food may help with muscle aches. Registered Dietitian Krista Haynes suggests legumes, flaxseed, and alfalfa sprouts for a more balanced diet. Calciumrich foods, like green leafy vegetables, may help muscles relax as well. Ms. Haynes also suggests having lavender essential oils nearby at bedtime to provide further relaxation.

3. Moderate Exercise Exercise moderately and not too close to bedtime. Excessive exercise can worsen RLS, but gentle exercise such as walking at a normal pace can bring some muscle tension relief. 4. Set Sleep Habits Be good about sleep habits. Known as “sleep hygiene,” having healthy, regular habits around bedtime can help calm you and prepare your mind and body for sleep. This can be difficult if you are experiencing postmenopausal night sweats or have some sort of sleep disorder. 5. Stretch Regularly Stretching has been shown to help RLS sufferers. Yoga may also provide relief.

6. Cut Out Caffeine, Alcohol, and Nicotine Reduce or reject caffeine, alcohol, nicotine. Studies have shown that all three of these can worsen a whole lot of menopause symptoms, so as hard as it may be to lessen intake or give them up entirely, you might find a decent night’s sleep is worth it. 7. Practice Self-Care Take a warm bath. Get a massage. Sometimes the best care is self-care, so

consider indulging yourself in some calming comfort.

8. Wrap Your Foot A Restiffic foot wrap. This adjustable foot wrap may help reduce symptoms by targeting pressure points on foot muscles. According to Berkeley Wellness, researchers thought that pressure on the foot would signal the brain to relax leg muscles. They claim on their site that through gentle manipulation of the feet, restiffic relief may reduce anxiety, relieve stress, ease foot pain, and improve blood flow and sleep. The wrap has only undergone small studies, so more research is needed to determine if the Restiffic is truly effective.

9. Use a Sleep Diary Tracking. Some sufferers have reported that keeping a sleep diary to help track triggers and successful strategies really helps them to manage the condition.

Last Resort: Medication If none of the suggestions above work, it may be time to consider medicine. Helpful medications are available, so if you do all of the above and find you’re still suffering, it’s a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider. Mayo Clinic lists Requip, Neupro, and Mirapex (dopamine agonists) as possible options. Other medications known as “dopaminergic” drugs (Sinemet) affect the levels of dopamine in your brain. However, there are concerns about the phenomenon known as “augmentation,” or the worsening of RLS symptoms after long-term use of some dopaminergics. Be sure to ask your doctor about the risks versus the benefits. Other medications that may work are sedatives to help you stay asleep, regardless of your RLS symptoms. Anticonvulsants such as gabapentin have been shown to provide some relief, as have opioids. Opioids, however, are very addictive, so they may only be prescribed for a short time and for those with extreme symptoms. There is no “cure” for RLS, and symptoms may worsen with age. However, a combination of healthy lifestyle choices plus medications, if necessary, may lessen the symptoms enough to allow you to sleep.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR SINUS PAIN many antibiotics are prescribed whether your sinus problem is viral or bacterial — and nobody wants to take antibiotics they do not need and will not help. 8 Natural Remedies for Sinus Pain Relief

S

easonal allergies strike at the worst possible time, leaving us feeling under the weather and making it hard to keep up with our daily routines. You’d think itchy eyes and a runny nose are bad enough, but when you start to throw sinus pain into the mix, it can really knock you off your game. Sinus pain comes on quickly and makes it hard to focus on daily tasks. Regardless of the cause, we’ve gathered 8 natural remedies to help you find sinus pain relief and start to feel like your normal self in no time.

What Is Sinusitis? Sinusitis is a prolonged inflammation of the sinus passages that typically results in mucous build-up and discomfort. You may also experience congestion, headache, and even discolored discharge from your nose. Unfortunately, this irksome condition affects millions of people each year. It’s also the 5th most common condition that doctors prescribe antibiotics for. Sinusitis can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Unfortunately,

1. Essential Oils There are several essential oils that help combat blocked sinus passages, including eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, and oregano oil. Oregano oil might seem odd, but it is naturally antibacterial and can provide a bit of relief. You can either use an oil diffuser or add the oil to a steam bath. I prefer to boil a pot of water, remove it from the heat, throw in some helpful essential oils or Vicks Vaporub, and then put my face over the steam with a towel over my head. Make sure not to stick your face too far towards the water; otherwise, you might get burned and have a whole new problem on your hands. 2. Keep Your Head Elevated Prop your head up with pillows at night to keep your head above your heart. This sleeping position will prevent sinus buildup and can help you to breathe more comfortably throughout the night. Since getting a good night’s sleep is even more important when you are unwell, this slight adjustment will help.

3. Neti Pot and Saline Solution A neti pot is a must if you suffer from sinus problems on a regular basis. A neti pot naturally flushes out sinuses to soothe symptoms and reduce the risk of infection by using a salt solution to rinse and clear away excess buildup in your nasal passages. However, if you are super stopped up, it may not help initially.

4. Reflexology and Pressure-Point Stimulation Give yourself a soft facial massage because some facial pressure points

have been shown to relieve sinus issues. Other research has also shown that reflexology can also be effective for sinus relief. There is a little device to help you with this, the ClearUP. ClearUp is a small, handheld device that easily glides along the outside of the nasal passages — the cheek, nose, and brow bone — to deliver low current electrical waveforms that stimulate the nerves under the skin to help relieve sinus pain. ClearUP is available over-the-counter without a prescription.

5. Eat Spicy Food Eating spicy food with ingredients like peppers, chili, horseradish, cayenne, or wasabi will quickly clear your sinuses. Sometimes even just smelling a potent spicy food can do the trick! It may not last long, but these will naturally clear your nasal passageways and offer some temporary relief. 6. Stay Hydrated Dehydration can contribute to your sinus passages drying out, causing increased pressure in your face. Even if you don’t think you are dehydrated, go ahead and increase your water intake when you do not feel good.

7. Immune-Boosting Foods The saying goes, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’ and that’s true when it comes to preventing colds and other ailments as well. Eating plenty of garlic, ginger, and foods high in vitamin C like peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants, broccoli, and brussels sprouts will help support your immune system in fighting off invaders that could potentially infect your sinuses. Try to find fun and tasty ways to incorporate these superfoods into your diet, especially if it’s the time of year you typically find that you are susceptible to colds and other minor illnesses.

8. Take a Walk Even simple exercise like taking a walk or doing a little yoga can increase blood circulation and temporarily relieve congestion, allowing you to breathe easier. Sinus pressure affects pretty much everybody; seasonal colds and allergies aren’t particular about who they affect, so no one is immune from them. When they do strike, the 8 natural remedies listed here can bring you relief from the pain and discomfort associated the sinus pressure.

“I was fortunate to be passing a chemist shop in my home town and decided to make an appointment with the audiologist. I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo
