S

O, it’s a hearty welcome to the sunshine. Temperatures have soared at the start of April and provides more opportunities to get out and about and enjoy what life has to offer. We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter break and are refreshed as we look forward to another (hopefully) glorious Summer. Temperatures are also high on the domestic front with so much controversy over telephone recordings, resignations, the upcoming local elections and so much happening on the sporting front. Our advice to all seniors is to go out and exercise your right to vote on this occasion. While it’s not a General Election we should use the occasion to express our views on what’s happening in our country and whether or not we agree with the direction it is going. In our One-on-One we speak with Maire Garvey, the inspirational woman who is the brain behind the Dip in the Nip phenomenon. In June of this year many courageous women (and men) around Ireland will cast away their towels and dressing gowns and take the plunge for cancer charities. Strangely enough Maire, in her interview, reveals the idea come to her after visiting a psychic. She is also delighted that her brandchild has had unintended consequences. The Dip in the Nip has had a liberating effect on many of those who participated to date. Women who had inhibition about the concept have developed a pride in their bodies and more and more are now getting involved. Maire also speaks candidly about some of the demons in her own life. Mature Living’s Gerry Walsh has just returned from a Uniworld cruise on the Danube and has been completely bowled over by the experience, particularly the relaxing and all-inclusive nature of the package. The attention to detail, the friendliness and efficiency of the crew and staff, the guided tours, the cuisine, the onboard entertainment could only be described as unbelievable. He highly recommends a cruise holiday . . . and the price is very reasonable when one considers what’s included. Read his views on pages 16 and 17. Just a few days after the historical visit of our president to England, London-Irish girl Catherine Gilmartin talks about what the visit, the president’s words and, in particular, the Ceiliuradh, meant to her as a descendant of Irish parents who emigrated to England in the late ‘50s. It puts the spotlight on those times and what followed, how the Irish were perceived by the British and vice versa, and the change in focus in 2014. On the health and fitness front we take a look at ways to boost your heart health and advice you o introduce a kettle bell into your exercise routine. Many grandparents are kept on their toes by active grandchildren and we discuss the way we can negotiate matters with our grandchildren. Also, don’t miss our Food and Drink section where we provide you with a Taste of Italy. There are, of course many other interesting features and articles. We are also aware that more and more people are seeking copies of Mature Living, so if you are unable to pick up a copy regularly you should consider contacting our subscription department at 071-9154538 or by e-mailing info@matureliving.ie.

Protecting Older People Against Elder Abuse

By Anne Dempsey - Head of Communications at Third Age

E

very year, Senior Help Line, Ireland’s only telephone listening service specifically dedicated to older people, receives a number of calls from older people who are being abused. Our callers may not use the term elder abuse, and instead may talk about being afraid, or not allowed out, or speak generally about being bullied or insulted. In common with many other hidden situations, elder abuse is

only latterly being recognised for the crime it is. Elder abuse has been defined as 'A single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship, where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person, or violates their human and civil rights’. (Protecting our Future, Report of the Working Group on Elder Abuse, September 2002. It is the phrase ‘where there is an expectation of trust’ which differentiates elder abuse from a crime of common assault. When the

Page 4 Mature Living April 2014

actions happen in a setting – be it a home or nursing home – where an elderly person can reasonably expect to be protected and cared for, this is elder abuse. Elder abuse is a fact of life in Ireland. A national survey by the National Council for the Protection of Older People, (NCPOP) published in 2010 revealed that up to 10,000 Irish older people are being abused at any one time. Many people are shocked when they hear the extent of abuse, which can run the gamut or a single inappropriate action to a more sustained regime. Elder abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional/psychological, sexual, financial and can include neglect. Physical abuse can include assault, rough handling or restraint. Verbal abuse includes shouting, aggression, insults, while emotional abuse can include general bullying, humiliation, threats, and denial of freedom and independence. Abuse involving neglect can include lack of basic care, and financial abuse includes stealing from the older person, defrauding or exploiting, and intimidation in financial matters. 2,460 cases of elder abuse were referred to the HSE in 2012, according to figures released in July 2013 - a 7% increase over 2011. Most abuse is perpetrated by family members, with sons

and daughters involved in almost half of abuse referral cases, followed by spouses and other relatives. Twothirds of all abuse victims are female. Elder abuse is a relatively unreported crime, and much of it takes place in secret behind closed doors. Emotional, verbal and financial abuse is the category most commonly reported on Senior Help Line. Given the secrecy that is often involved, taking the first step to talk about elder abuse often involves an act of courage on the part of the caller. Senior Help Line volunteers are trained to take a caller seriously, to listen and support. If the caller is being abused by a family member, often they want the relationship to continue but the abuse to stop. It can be helpful to explore with a caller if there is anyone they can confide in without compromising their safety. Breaking the circle of silence and secrecy to assess support can be an important first step. Typical potential sources can include other family members, friends, neighbours as well as professional help provided by such people as the public health nurse, Garda The HSE has put in place a number of Elder Abuse Protection Officers around the country. Such personnel will investigate a situation with discretion and try to resolve the situation in the best interests of both the abused person and the wider family. Sometimes a family carer may need support and respite. Situations of elder abuse within a family can be complex and need time to sort and resolve. An older person has the right to care, respect and freedom from reasonable fear. We repeat that breaking the silence and looking for help are an important first step. All calls to Senior Help Line are confidential and we can assure a caller that we will respect their wishes and work with them in a way that is most helpful to them. Stricter guidelines for hip ops

N

ew HIQA guidelines have stipulated that patients with hip arthritis should first be managed by GPs and physiotherapists before being referred on for possible hip replacement operations. The independent health safety body has stipulated that only arthritis patients meeting specific guidelines, outlined in a new report, should be considered for hip operations. HIQA points out that the cost to the health sytem of providing hip replacement operations is set to rise, partly due to rising numbers of obese patients having the procedures. The draft guidelines state that the majority of patients with hip osteoarthritis should be managed conservatively

in primary care in the first instance. Primary care treatment would include pain relief medication, weight reduction, activity programmes and physiotherapy. HIQA says that the provision of specialist physiotherapy services for hip arthritis patients in hospitals can help cut waiting lists for outpatients appointments with consultants. Unfortunately, access to hospital physiotherapy services is currently only available through consultant clinics, for which there can be long waiting lists, the guidelines point out. HIQA recommends that hospital specialist physiotherapy programmes should support GPs and

community physiotherapists to manage patients with arthritis who may not need operations. It also stresses that patients should not be referred for an opinion in relation to hip surgery until there has been a discussion in relation to the pros and cons of an operation, and that they will be happy to proceed with surgery if considered suitable following assessment in primary care. However, the guidelines state that this will require more time on the part of GPs, and means that the primary care service for managing patients with arthritis needs to be adequately resourced. The guidelines also note that the extent to which patients must wait for their hip operations once listed for surgery is currently unclear, and it is likely that waiting lists for hip operations remain substantial. HIQA stipulates that patients should get hip surgery only when they meet specific criteria, including: * No improvement in the condition following at least three months of GP/physiotherapist treatment. * These patients should have severe symptoms and/or moderate to severe movement limitation, significantly affecting their quality of life. * Patients should also have x-ray evidence of hip osteoarthritis and have a body mass index of less than 40 (over 40 is classified as very severely obese). Obese patients are generally

estimated to be at increased risk of complications around the time of surgery. * Patients should also still want the surgery following a discussion with health professionals on its pros and cons. HIQA says the implementation of the guidelines will depend on timely access to the full range of treatment options in primary care and to radiology services at primary care level. The HIQA report says the current estimated annual national cost of hip replacement procedures in Ireland is €37.3 million. While the number of these operations provided in the public system has remained constant for several years, demand for this type of surgery is expected to grow. The report adds that the cost per episode of care is also likely to increase due to rising levels of obesity, and the greater number of operative complications in obese hip replacement patients. HIQA has also issued guidelines for carrying out shoulder and knee replacement surgery. Director of Health Technology Assessment at HIQA Dr Mairin Ryan said the purpose of these guidelines was to ensure that the right patients receive referral and treatment at the right time and that unnecessary referrals were avoided in patients who were unlikely to get additional benefit from surgery over other treatment options. Further details of the guidelines are available at www.hiqa.ie

Few couples sleep facing each other How close to your partner do you sleep? New research suggests this may reveal important information about your relationship. UK scientists asked 1,000 people to describe their favourite sleeping position. The participants were also asked about the quality of their relationship and their personality. The study revealed that just 4% of couples spend the night facing each other, with 42% sleeping back to back and 31% facing the same direction. Some 12% of couples sleep less than an inch apart, while 2% sleep more than 30 inches apart. The scientists noted that the further apart a couple slept, the worse their rela-

tionship appeared to be. Some 86% of those who slept less than an inch apart from their partner said they were happy in their relationship, compared to 66% of those who slept more than 30 inches apart. "One of the most important differences involved touching - 94% of couples who spent the night in contact with one another were happy with their relationship, compared to just 68% of those that didn't touch," noted Prof Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire. The study also found that extroverts tended to sleep closer to their partners. The research was carried out at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Bealtaine @ Ballina Arts Centre!

O

nce again May is on the way, and with it comes Bealtaine, the annual nationwide festival of arts events and activities celebrating creativity in older age. And once again, Ballina Arts Centre is delighted to present a programme of events as part of the 19th annual Bealtaine festival. People are not only living life for longer but living life to the full and Ballina Arts Centre proudly welcomes the opportunity to engage older people in arts and cultural activities, by showcasing the talents and creativity of both first time and professional older artists, with an excellent programme which will include visual art, theatre and film screenings. Bealtaine @ Ballina Arts Centre will begin on 7th May, at 8pm with Small Plastic Wars, a theatre production, partially based on actor Pat McGrath’s own life story which is built on a bittersweet bedrock of unrealised dreams, the challenges of married life and the impact of recession. His passion for a hobby he never had time for, fills the void of unemployment, skews his priorities and for a time outweighs any concerns about family or income. This thought-provoking play will be followed by a post-show discussions, based on the contents of the play including job loss and the effects on selfesteem, family and in the community.

The Bealtaine programme will also feature a number

of film screenings: the first on Friday 9th May, at 2pm, the venue will screen the classic High Society. High Society, (1956), starred Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. The superb cast and priceless contribution from Louis Armstrong and Cole Porter tunes make the kind of movie that never loses its appeal. This film was Grace Kelly’s final acting performance before her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco, when she gave up her career to become a real life princess. Tickets: €5 The Straight Story, Friday, 16th May, 2pm. The Straight Story, (1999), directed by David Lynch. The film is based on the true story of Alvin Straight’s 1994 journey across Iowa and Wisconsin on a lawnmower. When he hears that his estranged brother Lyle has suffered a stroke, Alvin makes up his mind to visit him and hopefully make amends before he dies. Alvin's legs and eyes are too impaired to receive a driving licence, so he hitches a trailer to his lawnmower; (1966 have max speed of 6.5 miles per hour and sets off on the 240-mile (390 km) journey). Tickets: €5 The Quartet, Friday, 23rd May, 2pm. The Quartet is a wickedly comic film about redefining old age and growing old with hope; demonstrating how art illuminates life and the human spirit remains undimmed even as the

brightest stars start to fade. Superb performances by Pauline Collins, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtney, Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith. Tickets: €5 Bealtaine @ Ballina Arts Centre will culminate with a free Gallery Tour of CONFLICT (ambivalence), an exhibition of sculptural works by Sligo-based artist Clea van der Grijn. Clea’s recent work is about ‘challenging conventional perceptions of memory, death, loss and living, while exploring the ambivalence associated with deprivation and the

conflicts mixed emotions produce’. Parallel to Clea’s own experiences, she has been artist in residence at the North West Hospice since 2011. The exhibition was featured on RTE’s flagship arts programme The Works, on Good Friday. The Gallery Tour will be led by Ballina Arts Centre’s Visual Arts Assistant Kieran Gilroy. Bealtaine, an Age & Opportunity initiative part-funded by the Arts Council and delivered by hundreds of organisations around the country, was established in Ireland in 1996. Bealtaine@Ballina Arts Centre continually strives to find new ways to engage, to motivate and to support people. Bealtaine is coordinated by Age & Opportunity, the national organisation that inspires everyone to reach their full potential as they age. THE RIGHT TO EQUALITY DOES NOT CHANGE WITH AGE By Patricia Conboy The right to equality does not change with age but the reality is that older people do face age discrimination and ageism. When, for example, people are forced to leave their jobs at age 65 and to apply for Job Seekers Benefit - as is happening in Ireland since the Transition Pension was abolished in January 2014 – that is age discrimination. When, for example, older people are casually blamed for rising costs in the health service – without analysis of the complex range of factors influencing rising health costs – that is ageism. Age discrimination and ageism are not, of course, confined to Ireland. These are abuses without borders. That is why an International UN Convention on the Rights of Older People would be a very powerful tool in the struggle to create a more age friendly society globally, and in our own country. Though the United Nations has developed specific instruments on the rights of children, of women and of people with disabilities, there is no comparable convention on the rights of older people. In fact there is considerable resistance by many EU governments, including the Irish government, to the development of a specific convention on older people. Their argument is that fundamental rights and freedoms shared by all human beings are already set out in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and subsequent UN treaties, and there is no need for a dedicated convention on older people. However this argument is not accepted by advocates for age equality. They are supported by experience in other fields where dedicated and legally binding Conventions on the Rights of Women, of Children and of Persons with Disability have been skillfully used by advocacy groups to highlight discrimination and to pressurize national governments to move beyond lip service and to implement specific human rights in practice. A major advance in the debate on a dedicated convention on older people has been the establishment, following a vote by the UN General Assembly in 2010, of an Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG). The mandate of the OEWG is to examine the existing international framework on the rights of older people; to identify possible gaps and how best to address them; and to consider and report to the UN on what should go into a new international legal instrument on older persons’ rights. Any Member State of the UN can participate in the OEWG and NGOs can apply for accreditation to participate. Individual Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) can also apply to join the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People which is leading a collaborative lobby for a Convention on the Rights of Older People at OEWG meetings. You can find out more about the Global Alliance at http://www.rightsofolderpeople.org/ and, for an Irish perspective, read http://humanrights.ie/author/eilionoirflynn/. While OEWG meetings take place in New York, government representatives at the UN take their instructions from their own governments. The Global Alliance has highlighted the role that NGOs can play at the national level by: • Encouraging their government to participate in the work of the OEWG. • Informing Government representatives at home and in New York about discrimination against older people, and identifying issues they want raised at OEWG meetings. • Mobilising older people’s groups to advocate for their rights; • Promoting media coverage of older people’s rights and issues arising; and • getting involved in national delegations to OEWG meetings. While there have been wins in the international campaign for a UN Convention on the Rights of Older People, progress remains slow and uncertain. In the absence of pressure from older people and from NGOs, the Irish Government will certainly drag its heels. Why not play your part by speaking up loudly on the merits of a UN Convention on the Rights of Older People and asking your political and NGO representatives to do the same? OST people , particularly from the West and North West, would be familiar with Máire Garvey as the brains behind Dip in the Nip, the annual skinny dip in aid of cancer charities, which is now nationwide, with events scheduled across five consecutive Sundays all over Ireland in June of this year. But there is much more to this enigmatic Donegal native (of Mayo parentage) than most realise and like many personalities we feature on these pages Máire was prepared to speak candidly to us about the many demons in her life and the struggles to cope with highs and lows that appear to be so much part of the human condition. Born in Co. Donegal in 1960, she now lives in Lecanvey, near Westport, having spent a number of years in Sligo, during which time the Dip in the Nip concept was conceived. Her sole companion on a daily basis is her little terrier Flash (no plaudits for guessing what inspired a name like that!). On the educational front

Máire attended the Royal & Prior Comprehensive School in Raphoe, Co. Donegal. As we will later learn much of her subsequent education was achieved as a mature student. She has Diplomas for Marketing and Direct Marketing. She has a BA in Philosophy & Theology from Milltown Institute of Philosophy & Theology, and a research MA in Philosophy (Alcoholism and Virtue Ethics). Her varied career started with a job as secretary and she can remember being taught on an old upright typewriter. In one of her first jobs she recalled being impressed that they had a telex machine. The secretarial jobs came as result of doing a secretarial course as most girls had been advised to do at the time, though Máire had to stifle her personal dream of going to art college. She worked for a number of years, also, in advertising before moving into fundraising, where she worked on some major campaigns, most memorably heading up the Trócaire/2FM 24-Hour Fast. After some years she decided to fulfil an ambition and went to college, opting to study Philosophy & Theology as a mature student. She really doesn’t know why she chose these subjects but enjoyed college so much she decided to

Page 10 Mature Living April 2014

stay on and do an MA. During her first year of the MA, she edited the college magazine, Horizon, which she had been involved in reviving two years previously. During the period, however, Máire struggled to maintain sobriety and suffered many debilitating bouts of depression. Though she is now sober for 21 years she has continued to

experience highs and lows, but during all this time had never associated her feelings with depression. She simply thought of herself as worthless and useless, a fraud and a waste of space, somebody who was incapable of making a valuable contribution to any job she undertook. It was only when a good friend whose judgement

she valued suggested she might be depressed that something clicked in her brain. When she eventually visited her doctor and outlined her anxiety, sense of worthlessness, being overwhelmed by simple tasks, lack of interest in life and the desire for isolation and oblivion, the reality finally unfolded – she was depressed.

Máire was diagnosed last year as bi-polar(2) and is very open about her condition. In so many ways the revelation is a relief. She is taking medication and undergoing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The latter she finds wonderful as she has learned to recognise the red flags and is learning to manage the depression herself. Very often it’s a matter of learning to manage the highs – to calm down. She is happy that she has started to face up to what’s wrong with her and is getting the appropriate help. The idea of the Dip in the Nip came to Máire during a period of unemployment some year ago; she was wondering what direction to take next. A friend suggested a visit to a psychic, and though sceptical, she figured she had nothing to lose. What the psychic said to her has never left her: ‘I see you and a large group of women, naked, in a large body of water’. Her first reaction – that’ll never happen! And then she thought that it would be a brilliant way to raise money for breast cancer. And so the Dip in the Nip was born – and it was born in earnest after an interview

with the late, great Gerry Ryan, who gets the credit for naming it. Máire intended the Dip in the Nip to be a one-off – after all, she was faced with the task of finding full-time employment for herself - but the event seemed to capture something in the public consciousness, and it took off. Now in its’ sixth year, there are Dips for women, Dips for men and Dips for couples, and there will be a total of 5 Dips throughout the month of June in different locations around the country. (All locations are kept secret, even from Dippers, until 24 hours beforehand, to ensure privacy, a key factor in the success of the Dips). It all started in 2009. She had no idea what the reaction would be. Initially, many women appeared to be sceptical and spoke in terms of “beached whales” when the concept of skinny-dipping was introduced. It was planned to have it at Rosses Point but the proximity to the golf course put a damper on this. The final verdict was Lissadell and eventually (thanks, perhaps, to the RTE exposure) 180 brave women

Tara Sheridan - from Cork, who travelled to Sligo on her own for the very first Dip. She was Chief Dipper in 2012 and 2013 in Cork. Sadly, she died in January of this year after her fifth encounter with cancer. The Cork Dip this year is being held in her honour (she was Captain of the Cork Dragons).

turned up, bared all and faced the North Atlantic; of this number just 25 were from Sligo; many who supported the idea said they weren’t prepared to participate if it was in their own back yard. The first Dip raised €56,000 for the Irish Cancer Society. After the first year in Sligo the project took wings as a fundraiser. But the concept had a deeper, more important influence. It gave something to people, as most of the participants had never done anything like it before. It provided a sense of joy and liberation, particularly for those with body image issues. “It makes us realise our bodies are wonderful; too often we abuse them and don’t see the beauty. In the ocean everybody is equal. Proud bellies, mastectomy scars, cellulite, we’re all there. Skinny-dipping is the ultimate in life affirmation, so the Dip in the Nip lets us celebrate life in all its beauty. Many of the participants had experienced cancer - either their own or with somebody close. Some had lost loved ones and, indeed, some dippers have died since doing their own dip. Some even joined while in treatment .” Six years later, Máire’s “naked” ambition has grown into a nationwide phenomenon with events in five locations throughout Ireland. The locations and beneficiaries this year are as follows: • Galway, 1st June: Hand in Hand Children’s Cancer Charity • Dublin, 8th June: ARC Cancer Support Centre • Cork, 15th June: Cork Dragons Breast Cancer Survivors and Marymount Hospice • Sligo, 29th June: SHOUT (Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit Trust). • Meath, 7th September: North East Cancer Education and Research Trust (This Dip had been originally scheduled for 22nd June.

Despite being susceptible to depression Máire is a competent public speaker, having accidentally discovered a talent for it when doing MC for a Liam Lawton concert, one of his first, in the Chapel in Maynooth back in the 80s. She has since spoken at many functions, and her delivery attracts comments such as ‘motivating’ and ‘inspirational’. She is also a member of Toastmasters, and needs no prompting to get up on her hind legs and speak when asked to. Máire lives just five minutes from the beach and swims all year round. To relax she likes to read novels and listens to music. Currently, she is reading a wonderful book, “Stoner” by John Williams, first published in 1965, a simple story about an ordinary person who has never really achieved anything. She likes classical music and opera and has a particular love for Ennio Morricone and Karl Jenkins. The Dip in the Nip is the world’s first skinny dip for charity and has raised nearly €300,000 to date. Máire would love to see 200 dippers at each venue this year. In addition to Dips for women, there are now Dips for men and Dips for couples. It is not a nudist or naturalist event, so the beaches are chosen (strange as it sounds) with privacy in mind. While Máire is coming to

terms with her own demons and is finding a path to inner peace she admits she has a bit to go yet. Her openness and honesty has to be inspirational to everybody and cancer-sufferers can be comforted by the fact they are being supported by someone who really cares. Many who may have thought that the skinny-dip idea was freakish initially are now glad they did it as it has transformed their lives. After our interview last week I was convinced that it is inspirational ideas from people like Máire Garvey that really make a difference in today’s world.

Hair Care Tips & Hairstyles Perfect for Women Over 50

L

ets face it – as a woman in our fifties we’ve probably tried just about every style, length, highlights, lowlights, maybe even multiple colors – some of us have even rocked purple, blue, or pink like Helen

Mirren. The best look may be a simple cut that works for your face shape and hair type. If you have fine hair you’re most likely not going to be able to pull off a long shag, but maybe you can wear a

shorter Jodie Foster version, or try a sassy little bob to give your hair a fuller, healthier look. If you’ve always worn your hair long, try a medium layered cut like Kate Capshaw to give your hair more movement. One of the problems women in their 50’s and 60’s make is keeping the same hairstyle for decades! That may not be that complimentary but just familiar and comfortable. Be brave, take a chance and try something new like Americas First Lady Michele Obama who based on her various hairstyles has a lot of fun! Just make sure you consult a good hair stylist and don’t make any rash decisions while sitting in the chair – at the hair salon! Over processing can leave your hair unhealthy and cause breakage, so I highly recommend finding and using a great product to treat those tresses on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Highlighting your hair too often can also lead to over processed lifeless hair! If you’re in the stage of letting your hair rest from processing, it may

be best to get a good blunt cut and use gentle color enhancements versus harsh chemicals and treat your hair with natural products. As we age our hair can thin or just lose its luster. So what can help bring life back to thinning, dull hair? Eating greens, taking supplements, or biotin may help, but you might read the suggestions and tips that models are known to use to help keep their locks luscious during especially grueling fashion weeks. We may not be models, but as women we love looking at hairstyles of celebrities and women with similar hair as our own for ideas, especially on a bad hair day. But do not, I repeat, do not, do anything drastic as a result of one bad hair day! Take your time, consider a style that will work for you based on your personality, the amount of time you’re willing to take to style your hair, and how much time and money you’re willing to spend to maintain a style. Here are a couple of my favorite celebrity’s hair-

styles that may motivate you to schedule an appointment with a professional stylist to help you create that new look! Don’t skimp or go cheap, find the best stylist you can afford – especially if you’re going after a new style versus a trim. If may mean saving your

coffee money for a few weeks, not eating lunches out, or cutting back on your grocery budget by cutting out those unhealthy snack foods – you’ll find it’s a great investment and much better for you than the alternative. And when you look good, you feel better!

What the Ceiliúradh meant to a London-Irish girl Catherine Gilmartin is a descendant of one of the many Irish families who emigrated to London in the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Her dad was born in Temple Street, Sligo and she still has cousins there. Here she recounts some of her experiences growing up in London and on her return to Ireland . . . and outlines what the recent Irish Presidential visit, his words, and the Ceiliuradh in particular, means to her.

By Catherine Gilmartin

I

was amazed at the feelings the Ceiliúradh brought up for me – it wasn’t the historic occasion of the first state visit by the President of Ireland to the UK particularly; it was his wonderful way with words and at last I feel proud to say I am London Irish. His sincerity and gratefulness to the Irish in Britain,

their contribution to the UK finally recognised, and most of all that the Irish in Britain remain a cherished member of the Irish family. For the London Irish known as Plastic Paddys we now have an identity to be proud of. My mother and father emigrated to London in the late ‘50s and were met with signs FLAT TO LET – NO IRISH, NO BLACKS, NO DOGS. My father helped build an Irish club with some of his friends in West London, he was a big part of the Church, GAA and Irish community. Looking back it was unbelievable, Irish only - no English were allowed membership to the Irish club; even though we were working

Page 12 Mature Living April 2014

and living in their country!! Money was tight growing up in a family with six children, but Dad, like all his brothers who had left Ireland because there were no work opportunities, always found a few pounds to send home every week. It was such a tight-knit Irish community I guess I had a somewhat blinkered view of life at the time. Similar to many native Irish I had a tendency to blame the British for all the ills which had begat Ireland over the years. I had developed an innate aversion to anything British. While some of it might have been justified It was wrong of me to paint everybody with the same brush.

I was always known as the Irish girl growing up and during my working career I worked with many rather typically upper-middle class people and experienced some of their mild hostility and just plain misunderstanding of Irishness and Irish people. I can remember being dressed in green on St Patricks Day, proudly wearing my shamrock sent over by my family. One of my work colleagues was wearing a green jacket and I commented on the fact that she was celebrating St Patricks Day! She looked down her nose distastefully through her spectacles and said “I am most certainly not”. Mrs. Jones went to the Proms every year with

many of my work colleagues waving their Union Jack flags and being proud to be British. The tables have truly turned and I wondered what they thought when the Royal Albert Hall was taken over by Irish flags and Glen Hansard and many other talented musicians, including a gang of London Irish singers (one of them my sister), had the spectators in the Royal Albert Hall standing up and singing The Auld Triangle! I never imagined it would happen – truly history was made that night. I used to love coming home every year to County Sligo when I was growing up and I never felt any different from my Irish relations. However,

when I first came over to live five years ago and found out that I was suddenly the English girl I hated it with a passion, finding myself in the same position as I was in England; the only difference was I was defending myself against my own people instead of the English, I felt I didn’t belong here either as I was not ‘real Irish’. However, I now have many good friends here and have been embraced by many lovely people in Sligo and Ballina and feel completely at home. So I thank you Mr President! I have at last found my identity and am now proud to be “London Irish” and a cherished member of the Irish family.

Feature with Sonya Hamill of Blue Apple Dental - Irish Dentistry’s Dental Practice of the Year 2013

Pain Free Dentistry! administer the anaesthetic very slowly and through a very fine needle. These techniques make a huge difference. And often patients will tell us they didn’t even feel it. Once you have the anaesthetic dental treatment should be pain free.

I

t is very common for a new client approaching a dental practice to begin with the phrase, ‘I don’t like dentists.’ As you would imagine, often it’s the people who need our help the most who are the ones who hold off coming to see us for the longest. But one thing we definitely know is, with some simple steps most people, we would even say everyone, can be helped to feel comfortable having their dentistry done. So, what are some of the most common reasons for these types of anxieties, and how can they be overcome? Dental Embarrassment: One of the main reasons many people fear coming to see the dentist is because they are embarrassed. You need never put off coming to the dentist

because you are embarrassed to show them the condition of your teeth. No matter how bad you fear your teeth may be, we can help you. And once that first visit is out of the way, and you have the comfort of a plan in place, many people will feel a lot happier about having their treatment. The Past: Often a person’s anxiety stems from an experience they have had with a dentist previously; typically a long time ago. There are a number of ways in which this can be overcome, but it is important to provide some reassurance first. Modern dentistry is vastly improved in attitude, methods and capabilities to what it used to be. Modern dentistry should be painless.

Sometimes this problem stems from an experience with an inconsiderate person. Don’t write off the profession because of one negative experience. You need someone who you feel will listen to you and take time to treat you the way you deserve to be treated. Often a personal recommendation is the easiest route to the dentist for you. Fear of pain and injections: Dare I say the ‘I’ word? Often the experience of having the anaesthetic is the moment an anxious patient has become most focused on. We now have steps for making this much easier. At Blueapple we take care to make this a positive experience. We numb the area in advance, warm the anaesthetic, and then

So, what can a dental practice with an anxiety friendly ethos offer you? A variety of methods can be used to help a patient overcome the anxieties which prevent them having dental treatment carried out. At Blueapple we operate an anxiety friendly policy, which means that we provide a tiered approach for helping individuals reach their dental goals. This is because every client is different, and has different needs for helping them reach the point of being comfortable receiving treatment. These begin with something as simple as gentle relaxation techniques, and then progress. Some people like to listen to music, or place a blanket over them. A practice like ours can help you work out what is right for you. Trust is key. Trust between patient and dentist is the foundation of a positive dental relationship. When we begin treatment with an anxious patient at Blueapple, typically we begin with a treatment which is very straight forward and short. This enables the client to feel comfortable that our dentist is following

their lead, stops when they ask them to so that it is done at their pace, tells them what they are going to do, and then does exactly that and no more. This level of trust is quite often a turning point for many patients, because they feel empowered and are in control of the situation. As this trust is cemented, the patient typically finds themselves being able to achieve more and more in the dental chair. What else is there? The choice of using medications to help you achieve comfort in the dental chair is an option many people like to know is there. At Blueapple we see the majority of people find sufficient relaxation somewhere on the scale of help before this, but the knowledge that it is available if they need it is a great comfort. For those who do choose this route, they can look at either Oral Sedation (a sedative tablet), R.A. (sedation through inhalation) or Intravenous Sedation. At Blueapple we offer IV sedation, and through this we provide a small dosage of sedative which gives the patient a state of deep relaxation, which enables them to have their treatment carried out very easily. So, overall, the message is to take the first step and see what happens. Find the dentist who works for you and make a plan. This quote is true, ‘A year from now you will wish you had started today.’

‘Such encouragement and support I have never experienced before and empowered me to complete the procedure without sedation….My trust in Blueapple across all aspects of my dental experience is always upheld each time I visit the practice. I cannot emphasise enough the transformation that has occurred in my life in terms of panic and anxiety. ‘ An anxious patient, Sligo.

Enchanted on The Danube

MATURE LIVING’S Gerry Walsh recently enjoyed a Uniworld river cruise on the Danube and was blown away with the experience

W

HEN given the enviable opportunity to take a week-long cruise on the Danube I was unsure what to expect as it was my first time to experience a cruise of any nature. As it transpired, the week from 23rd to 30th March will remain forever embedded in my memory. Sure, I visited beautiful cities like Budapest, Vienna, Salzberg and Passau and some beautiful towns and villages on the Danube basin; I enjoyed guided tours in those historic cities and enjoyed many culinary delights; I trekked on the hills over Passau and had a bike ride from Durnstein to Lintz, moving parallel with the luxury cruise ship as it navigated the scenic river route. But it was the quality of service and hospitality provided by Uniworld staff aboard its cruise ship, River Beatrice, that completely bowled me over. This service started as soon as we arrived at the boat. In their promotional literature they call it the “Six Star Experience”, and it is something that has to be

experienced to be believed. We were escorted to our staterooms, given time to relax, before sitting down to a sumptuous dinner. I have no hesitation in saying we were treated like royalty; the commitment and friendliness of staff was infectious, so much so that it rubbed off on all guests on board, who collectively became one big family of over one hundred over the eight days. The river cruise experience includes return airport transfers, seven nights in a riverview stateroom, all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks), Captain’s Farewell Gala dinner and a fine dining experience, and unlimited onboard drinks including wine, beer, cocktails, minerals, tea and coffee. There is a full programme of daily excursions, evening onboard entertainment, signature lecture and free internet and Wi-fi. It is the all-inclusive nature of the project that fascinated me. We could eat and drink as much as we needed and there was somebody always at hand to cater for our needs. The level of organisation and security was first-class. Tour buses always departed and returned on time. Extreme care was taken to ensure everybody was on board.

Page 16 Mature Living April 2014

On one occasion when I narrowly missed a bus organised to take our group to an exclusive concert in Vienna given by members of the renowned Philharmonic Orchestra, a special taxi was organised and three people were delegated to meet me at the theatre to make sure I made it to my seat. Our itinerary included Uniworld’s Epicurian Adventurer Program, which casts the spotlight on regions’ wines and cuisine. Here it included: • Private organic wine-tasting in the beautiful Wachau Valley • Saffron workshop with Wachau saffron grower • Luscious Austrian dessertmaking demonstration • Special food and wine-tasting dinner. With every meal on board guests were treated to a rich

selection of complimentary craft and local beers, spirits and distinctive wines chosen by acclaimed sommeliers. RELAXING I can now understand how and why these boutique river cruises are perfectly planned to create the ultimate, stress-free luxury river cruise experience. The innovative on-shore programs also provide options for guests to personalise their Uniworld boutique river cruise with “Choice is Yours”, “Go Active” and “Gentle Walking” options. The River Beatrice could only be described as exquisite, a work of art and as inspiring as the destinations it visits. The same can be said of all Uniworld’s ships which are maintained in immaculate condition.

PRICES: The Enchanting Danube allinclusive 8-day luxury river cruise prices start from €2,499 pp and has to be considered excellent value for all that’s included. SPECIAL OFFER: Uniworld are now offering a new itinerary Bordeaux, Vineyards and Chateau for only €1,799 per person and flights can be arranged to match. To learn more about these offers call Uniworld on 017753804, log onto Uniworld.ie or visit your local travel agent.

LEADER: Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is the leader in luxury river cruising and the only authentic boutique cruise line, featuring luxurious boutique ships with an average capacity of 130 guests, including shore excursions fully hosted by local experts, worldclass gourmet cuisine and award-winning personalised hospitality. They offer over 500 departures sailing on over 13 rivers in more than 20 countries throughout Europe, Russia, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. In Ireland they won Best Specialist Cruise Company at the 2014 Irish Travel Industry Awards. They also won Best River Cruise Company at the Travel Media Awards, 2014. Uniworld is just one of over 25 award-winning brands owned by The Travel Corporation, a highly successful international travel group. In addition to the

boutique river cruise ships these brands include luxury hotels, niche tour operators and other leisure interests. They serve over 1.5 million customers per year and are dedicated to providing them with excellent service, value and quality in every one of their businesses. They operate in 60 countries, on five continents with over 35 offices and more than 4,000 team members. In Ireland they offer four individual and unique brands under one roof. These range from luxury escorted tours, young and lively trips for people aged 18-35, and ultra-luxury river cruises to 5-star boutique hotels. Certainly, if the Danube experience is anything to go by The Travel Corporation and its brands must be on top of the market in providing an enriching travel experience to customers across the globe.

Uniworld’s cruise ship River Beatrice anchored at Budapest last week before undertaking the Danube cruise.

EYE CARE

by Rachel Murray Eyecare - Tobergal Lane, Sligo • Tel: 071-9142860

Protecting your eyes from the sun

I

n Ireland, every day - whether it is sunny or cloudy, and despite the season - we are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Most of the time we don't even realize it, considering UV rays are invisible to the eye. However, just as sun can damage your skin (burning, skin cancer and premature aging) it can be just as nasty on your eyes. Unprotected exposure over long periods of time can, and often does, damage the eye. In the short term, excessive exposure to UV radiation from daily activities, including reflections off of snow, pavement, and other surfaces, can burn the front surface of the eye, similar to sunburn on the skin. The cumulative effects of spending long hours in the sun without adequate eye protection can increase the likelihood of developing the following eye disorders: Cataract:A clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision.

Exposure to UV rays increases your risk of developing cataracts sooner.

degeneration, a condition affecting the central vision which is required to see fine detail.

Snow Blindness Photokeratitis): A temporary but painful burn to the cornea caused by a day at the beach without sunglasses; reflections off of snow, water or exposure to artificial light sources such as tanning beds.

Protect Your Eyes The greatest amount of UV protection is achieved with a combination of: sunglasses that block 99–100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B rays and a wide-brimmed hat. Wrap-around sunglasses add extra protection because they help block UV rays from entering the eyes from the sides and above.

Pterygium: An abnormal, but usually non-cancerous, growth in the corner of the eye. It can grow over the cornea, partially blocking vision, and may require surgery to be removed. Skin Cancer around the Eyelids: Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer to affect the eyelids. Age-related Macular Degeneration There is recent evidence that exposure to UV radiation can be associated with macular

Frequently Asked Questions Q:Who is at risk for eye damage? A:Everyone is at risk. Every person in every ethnic group is susceptible to eye damage from UV radiation. Q: When do I need to wear sunglasses? A: Everyday, even on cloudy days. Snow, water, sand, and pavement reflect UV rays, increasing the amount reaching your eyes and skin. Q: What

Tobergal Lane, Sligo • Tel: 071-9142860 www.rachelmurrayeyecare.ie should I look for when choosing a pair of sunglasses? A: No matter what sunglass styles or options you choose, you should insist that your sunglasses block 99–100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. What are the different kinds of lenses that are available? With so many lenses available, it's a good idea to ask a professional optician for help when choosing sunglasses. Different tints can help you see better in certain conditions, and a knowledgeable optician can help you choose sunglass tints that are best suited for your needs. Blue-blockers block blue light and usually have amber lenses.

Recent evidence indicates blue light is harmful, and could increase risk of eye damage from diseases such as macular degeneration. Both polarized lenses and antireflective coating cut reflected glare. Polarized lenses work exceptionally well to filter out reflected glare from shiny surfaces like water, pavement and dashboards. They improve contrast and visibility while reducing squint and eyestrain. Anti-reflective coatings dramatically reduce distracting reflections, improving contrast, visual acuity and comfort in difficult lighting situations. Mirror coatings are highly reflective coatings applied to the front surface of sunglass lenses to reduce the amount of light entering the eye, so you're more comfortable. Gradient lenses are tinted from the top down, so that the top of the lens is darkest. These lenses are good for driving, because they shield your eyes from overhead sunlight and allow more light through the bottom half of the lens so you can see your dashboard clearly. Photochromic lenses adjust their level of darkness based on the amount of UV light they're exposed to. In effect, they are dark outdoors in the sun, and lighter when indoors. The technology has greatly improved in recent years, so that the change from light to dark and vice versa, happens in seconds. And don't forget about the kids! You wouldn't send children to the beach without sunscreen, so don't send them without sunglasses either. Children's developing eyes let in more UV rays than adults; and since children tend to spend a majority of their time outdoors, sunglasses with the most impactresistant lenses are a must for all kids. Remember, eyesight is one of the most precious gifts we have, so look after it. EVERYONE is at risk from UV-related eye damage and UV damage today leads to eye problems tomorrow. Terracotta Succulents A guide to some happily low-maintenance succulents

A

t this time of the year when the sun is finally showing it’s face we start to really think about planting again. Those of us lucky enough to have a glass house, conservatory or greenhouse can really get going, but a window cill can also be a little mini greenhouse. Yesterday it was 22 degrees in the conservatory and it felt so much like summer I felt inspired to focus on succulents plants, native to the hot dry areas of South America and Africa, and their easy, almost maintenance properties. GET THE LOOK Chosen Plants Succulent plants evolved to counteract dry conditions with poor gritty soil. This makes them an ideal plant for many people who don’t have time to constantly look after plants and yet still want that green touch in their living spaces. I love

using succulents to create a miniature representation of a natural scene. Tree shaped succulents echo large vertical trees and smaller ones the larger spiky shrub forms of desert Agaves and Aloes. The colours are mostly deep greens and blue greens with browns and limes which match the earthy red terracotta so well. My personal favourite plants to plant up are the often colourful Echiverias, African Aloe varieties, the tree shaped Crassulas, and the spiky South American Agaves (the plant tequila is made from!). Terracotta Terracotta pots are ideal containers for succulents as the plants which are native to dry desert areas in Africa and South America, like dry, earthy conditions. We have a great collection of these humble terracotta pots in the conservatory and have

Page 20 Mature Living April 2014

started a little collection over the years- It’s amazing that once you start collecting something it crops up everywhere-flea markets, garden centres, charity shops, even the supermarket in form of fancy yoghurt or butter jars. From an aesthetic point of view they are also a perfect container for these lovely low mainenance plants and allow the elegant simplicity of the plants to really shine. You can use any container you like but make sure that the soil is a good, freedraining mix of soil and grit as with succulents the phrase ‘If in doubt don’t water’ is key. PLANTS Aloe aristata These lovely clump forming rosettes have a stripy pattern to their leaves. During Spring they produce orangey-red flowers and are one of the easiest plants to look after.

Echiveria elegans Echiverias are mostly stemless, rosette forming succulents with this one having a pink tint with sufficient light. So easy to propogate, the new offshoots simply have to be snapped off and set into the soil again. Sempervivum (Houseleek) Apart from Sedum these are succulents that will also tolerate being outdoors in our climate so a very versatile and elegant looking plant. Fabulous with Sedum acre (stonecrop) growing over a small rockery or wall. Leonie Cornelius is an award winning garden designer who runs her own business-BLUME design house. Enjoy a perfect lawn with help from the experts at Ardcarne Plantsplus Garden Centre

A

good lawn really enhances a garden and creates a calming contrast to bustling busy borders. Lawns are also a practical use of space, especially in large gardens and offer places for relaxation and play. What are the secrets for having a good lawn? It’s all about a little regular care every year. Looking after an established lawn Feeding is the key for a perfect lawn. It will not only keep it green and healthy, but feeding will discourage weeds and moss from establishing. Here at Ardcarne Plantsplus Garden Centre we recommend HumberPalmers as it has a slow release action, therefore keeping the lawn green all summer. It’s used by all the professional green keepers and it’s organic. A second application is beneficial in late summer to keep the lawn in good health over the autumn and winter period.

Controlling weeds & moss There’s a new moss control on the market called Osmo which not only kills moss, but also feeds the lawn for three months as well. A big advantage with Osmo is that you don’t need to rake out the dead moss, as it just withers away. It won’t stain tarmac or the patio and is completely safe for children and pets. Other lawn care products include Westland Lawn Feed, Weed & Mosskiller and Stadium, which control moss & weeds and feed the lawn at the same time. If the weeds are particularly bad we recommend spraying with a selective lawn weedkiller such as Dicophar, which kills lawn weeds but leaves the grass unharmed. In the west of Ireland moss is a problem that really needs to be addressed every year otherwise it can build up and smother the grass. To treat a very mossy lawn use Sulphate of Iron, which will turn the moss black. This should then be raked out, with a spring tine rake or a mechanical scarifier for large areas. Although the lawn can look bare for a while it will quickly recover, especially after feeding.

mulching option and this will also help feed the lawn. By following these little tips on lawn care, you really can look forward to the green, green grass of home! Great To Do Now… Bring colour to your patio pots with Senetti flowers which have vivid coloured daisylike flowers for months in spring and early summer. Plant seed potatoes, onions, herbs and vegetable seed now for a bumper harvest! Feed hedges and shrubs in borders with

Chicken Manure Pellets to encourage strong new growth. Plant a few strawberry plants to enjoy your own crops of tasty fruit this summer. They grow easily in pots and are fun for children to plant. Apple trees, plums, pears and other fruits can all be planted now and quickly establish in the moist warm soil. Summer flowering bulbs such as dahlias, gladioli, begonias and lilies can all be planted now for some great summer colour this year.

The Bands of our Showband Era

here were hundreds of them. Irish bands of every size, description and musical genre travelling the roads and borheens of Ireland. They travelled the length and breadth of the country from the 1950's through the mid 1980's. Although "officially" the term showband was coined in the late fifties and was used to describe bands that played a wide variety of music and usually included a "show" during the night, the term was gradually applied to all the bands that played in the 1960's. As the

Irish music scene splintered in the late sixties into pop, country bands, the term was dropped but we still find it the best overall description of the bands of the "ballroom" era. In the early days, they travelled in whatever they could find...bread vans, hearses, and even cars (roof racks and all). In later years, many (if not most) of them travelled in converted Ford Transit vans (like the one pictured right) that were normally used for delivery services. After a couple of windows were popped into the centre panels, a

However, a feature in the March 15, 1969 issue of Spotlight announced that the "Avons are Nine Years Together Without A Change." Formed at the very start of the showband era, the Mighty Avons, if nothing else, were consistent. To last nearly a decade without a single lineup a change was a major feat in the heady days of showband transitions which saw many of the major bands splintering as the pop vs. country battle raged in the late 60's. The band first went on the road as the St. Bridget's Ceili Band, but we are unsure of who was in that original lineup. (bass), Mick Brady (guitar) and brothers Jimmy (trombone), Peter (sax) and Paddy (trumpet) Smith. Larry had previously been with the Grafton Showband from Gowna around 1960. Although the article talked about the longevity of the outfit, 18 months later Larry Cunningham would leave the band. In it's early years, the band was a typical showband playing "all things to all people," but as the split between country and pop bands become the norm in the late sixties, the band chose the "country and Irish" route as Larry was one of the all time best selling artists in this unique genre. Larry Cunningham was the star of the band from its inception until his departure in late 1969. The band enjoyed a lot of success with Larry, but he announced his last gig would be on August 31, 1969. In September, the Avons announced 24 year old Gene Stuart would take over as the band's new lead singer and his first appearance with them was in Tullamore on Friday, September 19th, 1969. Gene had previously been with the Regents Showband. In August, 1972 the band announced that Gene Stuart would be leaving the band for an extended rest as he was "run down, and tired." Martin Geraghty, guitar player with the band for two years, was the featured singer on the band's newest single. It’s about not eating too much of some things – like calories, saturated fat, sugar and salt – while getting enough of others – like fibre and anti-oxidant vitamins and minerals. Drinks Water makes up over 60% of our body weight, and it’s important to keep hydrated to maintain this. You should aim to drink 6-8 glasses of liquid like water, juice, milk or fruit squash a day. It’s best to avoid too many fizzy drinks as they contain a lot of sugar and calories, which can result in tooth decay and weight gain when consumed excessively. Here are some facts and tips to help you turn healthy eating advice into enjoyable meals and snacks: 1. Fruit and vegetables Fruit and vegetables are full of minerals, fibre, and antioxidant vitamins that help our bodies to work efficiently and support our immune systems to keep us healthy. They can be fresh,

frozen, dried, canned or juiced and should make up about a third of our diet. Many of us don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables, and it can be hard to know how much a ‘portion’actually is. Here are a few simple suggestions, which count as one portion each: One portion is: Breakfast – a glass of juice or a heaped tablespoon of dried fruit or a banana with your cereal. Snacks – an apple or a handful of grapes or a pear. Lunch – a side salad or a tomato and lettuce in a sandwich or three heaped tablespoons of baked beans. Dinner – three heaped tablespoons of vegetables like peas or carrots or sweetcorn. You should aim to eat 5 portions a day. Remember each portion must be different, and try to choose foods of different colours to help you get the range of vitamins you need. 2. Starchy foods Foods like bread, chapattis, pitta bread, breakfast cereals, potatoes, rice, noodles and pasta are all starchy foods, which should make up a third of our diet. Wholegrain or wholemeal options contain more fibre which helps us feel full for longer and helps prevent constipation. Starchy foods are a good source of energy, calcium, iron and B vitamins and we should aim to have a serving with every meal. Why not try: Breakfast – wholegrain cereal or porridge or wholemeal toast with cut up banana or dried fruit. Lunch – a sandwich or brown rice or pasta salad Dinner – stews, casseroles or

curries with potatoes or coucous or pasta or rice One portion is: 2 tablespoons of cooked pasta, rice or noodles an egg-sized potato three tablespoons of cereal 3. Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, lentils and nuts All of these are a great source of protein, with beans, lentils and nuts being key protein sources for vegetarians. Try to choose lean cuts of meat and remove the skin from poultry before you cook it. This helps to keep your total fat and saturated fat intake

in check. It’s recommended that we include a portion of these foods with two of our daily meals, and eat fish once or twice a week. Oily fish like mackerel, salmon, sardines or fresh tuna are particularly good for you, as they contain omega 3 which helps prevent heart disease. One portion is: Fish: 140g Meat: 80g (about the size of a pack of cards) Beans/pulses: 2-3 heaped tablespoons 4. Milk and dairy foods These foods are rich in calcium

and nutrients that help to keep bones and teeth healthy and strong. Better to choose low-fat dairy options – weight for weight they have less fat and calories, but slightly more calcium, and other important nutrients than full fat products. Did you know: A pint of whole milk contains 22.8g fat whereas a pint of semi-skimmed has 10.2g? You should try and have three portions a day. One portion is: A glass of milk (200ml) 150g pot of low fat yoghurt 30g of cheese (matchbox size)

Foods to improve digestion Aloe vera Aloe vera juice is said to have many benefits including helping to treat irritable bowel syndrome. The aloe vera plant is made up of a variety of amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals which are said to assist the biochemistry of the body. It’s suggested that aloe vera has natural healing and detoxifying powers and works gently within the gut to help break down impacted food residues and cleanse the bowel, improving regularity. Herbal teas Many herbal teas are said to aid digestion and help alleviate gut problems. Peppermint is thought to help digestion after a meal,

prevent bloating and heartburn. Ginger tea may soothe upset stomachs and prevent nausea. Fennel and chamomile teas reportedly help with symptoms or irritable bowel syndrome, which is stongly associated with stress. Pears Pears are very gentle on the gut so are tolerated by almost everyone. They are a good source of the soluble fibre pectin and bioflavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants and are thought to protect against a range of diseases. Pears also provide vitamin C and potassium, which can help to regulate the blood pressure. The come in a range of varieties and textures and, as well as being a

great snack on their own, can be poached in red wine and vanilla, or even dipped in chocolate for a special treat. Prebiotics Prebiotics are nutrients which feed the probiotic bacteria in the gut, increasing their numbers and improving digestive health and the immune system. Prebiotics include fructo-oligosaccharides, found in leeks, onions, wheat, chicory root, garlic and artichokes. The prebiotic inulin is now being added to bread and cereals and research shows that eating 5g of inulin per day can optimise gut flora and improve digestion. Prebiotics can also be taken as a supplement.

Probiotics Naturally occurring gut flora can be adversely affected by factors such as alcohol, stress or disease. Probiotic or ‘good’ bacteria support gut flora and increase their numbers. They are recommended for problems such as IBS, or after a course of antibiotics that has resulted in constipation. Maintenance of healthy gut flora also depends on a good intake of prebiotic foods, which probiotic bacteria feed on. Rice The UK diet is heavy in wheat products, and as a result, gluten (also found in darley, rye and oats). While not everyone needs to avoid gluten, some people may benefit from eating more non-

gluten cereal grains such as rice, which are more easily digested. The starch in rice, particularly basmati, is absorbed slowly, providing a steady release of glucose into the blood for sustained energy. Water Much of our daily water consumption is needed for digestion and the elimination of waste products from the body. Drinking at least 1.5 litres (6-8 glasses) a day helps to prevent dehydration, which can cause constipation and other health problems such as indigestion, bloating and headaches. You should drink little and often, as a large amount in one go will not be absorbed as efficiently,

Meditation Meditation is predominantly an Eastern technique that has a similarity to Self-Hypnosis in that it also induces a trancelike, neutral state. Meditation, put simply, is a more advanced type of relaxation, involving a deeper, more deliberate letting-go (of control), with a view to engaging a corresponding depth of felt/sensed experience, typically expressed in spiritual terms. Paradoxically, Meditation can help one to gain healthy control through letting-go of unhealthy control. Meditation is an internalised form of prayer, achieved in and through a progressively-realised state of inner calm and silence, wherein the ‘more' of one's life will become apparent, to the degree that one has correspondingly let-go. Meditation is about exploring and experiencing for one's self, from within one's self, how one's life ‘really' works, i.e. from the inside-out, therein exposing the many limitations, deceptions,

exaggerations and entrapments of life as one perceives and figures it, from the outside-in. Figuring makes life complex, feeling keeps life simple. Meditation provides one with a means of discovering the ‘real'ationship that already exists between the felt/sensed ‘in' and the figured ‘out'. Homeopathy Homeopathy is a 200-year old, highly individualised medical system based upon a much more ancient principle of ‘like cures like'. Homeopathy acknowledges and endeavours to tap the inner core of change, recognising and respecting the enormous power that lies hidden in the depths of what we cannot see but can feel, exclusively from within. Symptoms of disease are regarded as evidence of the body's self-healing activities, in sharp contrast to orthodox medicine, which not only typically treats symptoms only but also views symptoms as indicators of a

malfunctioning, primordial, biological machine. In fact, orthodox medicine, because it has developed such a highly impersonal, technologised way of looking at the human organism, has fallen into the habit of defining health simply as the absence of disease and/or the eradication of symptoms of same. Closer to truth, there is no change without crisis and corruption. Hence, one cannot get healthy without getting sick. Homeopathic treatments seek to assist the body's self-regulating effort, instead of dampening or eradicating its symptomatic messengers, with a view to helping in the restoration of balance. The aim of Homeopathy is to treat the patient's complex symptom picture with a remedy whose known effects most closely resemble the symptoms of the disease. The goal of Homeopathy is to treat the patient as a whole person, according to both what is clinically observed and intuitively ‘felt', i.e. the ‘bigger' picture. The proponents of modern technological medicine have objected to Homeopathy on the grounds that it is unscientific. As our understanding of our individual selves and our “real”ationship with the external universe continues to evolve, it will become increasingly apparent that homeopathy is actually more consistent with emerging scientific theory than any other form of medicine, and that this holistic, humane, gentle and natural approach to healing may well become the medicine of the future.

The American Wake

Jeanie-Johnston replica famine ship

By Larina James

C

an you imagine yourself in a situation where you are obliged to emigrate, through personal choice or otherwise and the only means of communication after you left home was a letter which could quiet conceivably take weeks to reach its destination. That was the stark reality during the 1900’s and before. Individuals and Families forced to emigrate during that period were treated with a reverence otherwise only afforded the deceased. A going away party akin to a Wake was the norm back then and as the majority were leaving to live a new life in America the idea of the” American wake” was

born. Writing about the “American Wake” is indeed a sobering experience for me as I never quiet grasped the enormity of the sacrifice endured by our forefathers until I had the opportunity to speak with a distant elderly relative of mine who is a mine of information about this era and its part in Ireland’s history. My relative Patrick, (known as Patch to his friends) loves to regale interested parties with tales from an Ireland that has long since vanished and when visiting him recently he was surrounded by the works of Thurles born poet and essayist Dennis O’Driscoll, the tone and pathos of O’Driscoll’s work is according to Patch, an ideal backdrop

Page 30 Mature Living April 2014

from where he can begin his story. In the 19th century the Irish tradition of “waking” became embedded in the way of life of Irish people throughout the land. This resulted in this tradition being carried on not only for the deceased but also for the living, those men and women who were forced to emigrate in their hundreds of thousands from an Ireland that had been decimated by famine, poverty and lack of opportunity. During the 1850’s the harsh reality of life in Ireland for many meant that there was literally no food on the table as reliance on the potato was paramount. Irish people were forced to leave Ireland quiet literally in order to eat

and therefore live. The “American wake” was seen as a fitting way to say a last goodbye to sons and daughters, brothers and sisters who were leaving these shores, mostly to travel to America although various other countries also accommodated the Irish , not least Canada and Newfoundland. Sadly for the family left behind in Ireland this was in all probability the last time they would see their loved ones on this earth. Consequently the term “wake” was garnered from the fact that those leaving were as good as dead. This is indeed infinitely sad and when one thinks nowadays of the myriad ways in which our people can communicate with home and the ease with which travel has become available to all it is a measure of the sheer resilience of these people who went on to live fulfilled and fruitful lives in their adopted land. Irish people at home and abroad are universally known and respected for their love of music, poetry and song and this became an integral part of the “going away” party known as the “American wake”. Friends and neighbours would congregate from all over the locality when a family member( or indeed a number of family members) were preparing

to depart Ireland and even though it was essentially a sad occasion, merriment would prevail as the family and friends made one last effort to provide a party that the immigrant would never forget. Whiskey, Poteen and Stout would flow in the more affluent areas, however where there was dire poverty there was less likelihood of a feast as regards food. Women who were known for their ability to “keen” (wail or lament) were charged with giving a favourable account of the “ would be” emigrant and also recounting the huge loss this son or daughter would be to their family. Music and dance were important and to borrow a phrase from a poem by the aforementioned Dennis O’Driscoll,” the cool flagstoned kitchen” would literally see sparks fly as the jigs, reels, quadrilles and hornpipes would echo throughout the house. Irish stepdancing and the obligatory waltz were also there in abundance. Merrymaking would continue until the early hours when loved ones would be forced to part. Listening to Patch outline the heart-break involved when some of his own relatives were forced to leave the island is indeed difficult and both of us are filled with awe when we give it due

consideration. ( Poverty and illiteracy was part of life then and sometimes families had only a vague understanding of where their off-spring were going, that coupled with lack of modern means of communication paint a very gloomy picture of this troubling time in our history). Eventually when day-light arrived next morning the emigrant was accompanied by friends and family to the nearest train station or dockside for embarkation . That was the stark reality of the “American wake” and now as I write this, Patch and I can only breathe a collective sigh of relief, as although we do unfortunately have large scale emigration at this time in our history we are now blessed with new technology which makes it less difficult and less painful to say goodbye to our nearest and dearest and the day of the “American wake “ is long since vanished and that surely can be no bad thing.

Foot-note Co-incidentally as this goes to press I am informed that a reenactment of an American Wake/Living Wake will take place in Strokestown, Co.Roscommon on Friday May 9th at 9.30pm as part of the National Famine Commemoration 2014.

...With so much to choose from, what better way to spend a day or so than at the beautiful Royal Marine Hotel…

A

short drive along the South East coast will bring you to Dun Laoghaire, where overlooking the bay you will find the Royal Marine Hotel. Steeped in history, and a favorite with the locals, this landmark hotel is an impressive sight on the Dun Laoghaire skyline. A hotel has stood here since 1828. Many celebrities, and even royalty have passed through its doors over the decades. In 2004 this magnificent old building closed for restoration, a painstaking labour of love by the present owners. Situated in an elevated site on 4 acres overlooking Dublin Bay, the hotel has stunning views that on a clear day stretch as far away as Howth; and yet is still only a short journey from down-town Dublin. The original hotel has been extensively but sympathetically renovated with precise attention to detail.

And it is just this same attention to detail, we extend to you as our guest – whether overnight or simply joining us for a drink in our bar or dining in our restaurant. The large bay windows and high ceilings of the Bay Lounge highlight the grandeur and historic feel that is central to the hotel style. Lavishly furnished it is a comfortable and ideal venue to meet friends and family for coffee, lunch or perhaps to enjoy the age-old tradition of afternoon tea whilst overlooking the gardens, with spectacular views of the harbour. Our resident pianist completes the ambience every Saturday afternoon. Or perhaps dine in relaxed style in our Dún Bistro where the delights of the Restaurant are matched only by the professional friendly service and stunning views over the harbour. Irish Energy Assessor - Air Tightness Solutions

I

rish Energy Assessor customers will already know this, but we have always strived to offer a top quality service. The type of products and services that we offer are the corner stone of the air tightness industry. We have always expressed the importance of quality when it comes to the airtight seals and membranes used to create the an airtight envelope of buildings, that’s why we only use the SIGA air tight application which is accepted in the industry as the best performing air tightness application. When it came to the measurement of the of air permeability of buildings, using the fan pressurisation method (the blower door air tightness test), we have prescribed methods in the construction industry to work to, but we did not have a quality standard to meet. As soon as the prospect came about to obtain the Irish Standard Mark of quality standards via the NSAI we were eager to get licensed and to meet the standard to show conformity to I.S. EN 13829:2000. We're very proud to announce today that we have acquired the licence to use the Irish Standard Mark. Air tightness testing is required for all residences. Our company is proud to announce we are only one of two companies in Ireland that satisfy the standards set out in I.S. EN 13829:2000. We were very impressed with the professionalism shown by the NSAI inspectors. They were all rigorous with our operation and method statements and procedures we use when carrying out air tightness test. All our equipment has been inspected and other equipment have now been made a requirement; overall the experience has been a beneficial one. We look forward to demonstrate compliance through our services by providing higher levels of energy conservation using this new standard. All our customers can now have independent reassurance of the reliability of the residential and commercial air tightness testing services we provide.

Taste of Italy Spaghetti carbonara T

he classic spaghetti carbonara without cream, just plenty of egg and Parmesan cheese. Rich and delicious.

Ingredients Serves: 8 1 (500g) packet spaghetti 1 tablespoon olive oil 8 rashers pancetta or streaky bacon, chopped (about 200g) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 4 tablespoons dry white wine 4 eggs, beaten 50g (2 oz) grated Parmesan cheese Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Handful chopped fresh parsley Grated Parmesan cheese to serve Method Prep:20min - Cook:20min - Ready in:40min In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook spaghetti until just al dente. Drain well. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and set

P

ronounced 'bun-yet,' this is an old Italian recipe. It is made using mainly parsley and garlic and is meant to be eaten with crusty warm bread. It is almost sinful to share this secret recipe with the world, but you'll love it as much as I do. Refrigerate overnight for best flavour.

aside. Meanwhile in a large frying pan, cook chopped pancetta until slightly crisp; remove and drain onto kitchen roll. Reserve 2 tablespoons of dripping; add remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and heat in the same frying pan. Add chopped onion and cook over medium heat until onion is translucent. Add minced garlic and cook 1 minute more. Add wine if desired; cook one more minute. Return cooked pancetta to pan; add cooked and drained spaghetti. Toss to coat and heat through, adding more olive oil if it seems dry or is sticking together. Add beaten eggs and cook, tossing constantly with tongs or large fork until eggs are barely set. Quickly add 50g Parmesan cheese and toss again. Add salt and pepper to taste (remember that bacon and Parmesan are very salty). Serve immediately with chopped parsley sprinkled on top and extra Parmesan cheese at the table. Idea Try adding fresh peas or pre-cooked frozen garden peas to give your carbonara added flavour and colour! Simply add along with the pancetta or bacon.

Parsley & Garlic Boniet

Ingredients Serves: 8 2 bunches fresh parsley, finely chopped 1 (50g) tin anchovy fillets, drained and chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 tablespoons tomato purĂŠe 4 tablespoons white wine vinegar 8 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Method In a medium bowl, toss together the parsley, anchovies and garlic. Stir in the tomato purĂŠe, vinegar and olive oil. Serve at room temperature.

Motoring

Advice for older drivers parking sensors (or ‘beepers’) that can help you to park more easily. Think about whether you would find an automatic car easier to handle than a manual one, or whether it would be hard to adjust.

Declaring health conditions If you’ve developed a medical condition or disability that could affect your driving, you must tell the RSA, even if you’re not yet due to renew your licence. This also applies if your condition has worsened since your licence was issued. Many people worry that they’ll be forced to stop driving, but this is not necessarily the case. It’s a legal obligation for you to declare certain conditions. If you have an accident where your health condition may have been a factor and you haven’t declared it, you could be prosecuted and your insurance might not cover you. Which conditions should I declare Some of the medical conditions that you must declare are: dementia diabetes – if it’s insulin-treated Parkinson’s epilepsy any chronic neurological condition, such as multiple sclerosis any condition that affects both eyes, or total loss of sight in one eye. Other health conditions may need to be declared, depending on what kind of licence you have and how the condition affects you. Check the RSA website for a full list of medical conditions and disabilities you must declare For example, you may need to declare if you’ve had a stroke or have cancer, depending on how it affects you.

Reassessing your driving ability If you have developed a medical condition, you may need to have your driving ability assessed. Or you may not have a medical condition, but have decided yourself that you could benefit from an assessment. If your medical condition or disability makes it more difficult to drive, there may still be a way to help you to continue driving, for example, with the aid of suitable vehicle adaptations. A Mobility Centre can advise you on the best options for your particular circumstances and the RSA can refer you (and pay for the assessment), but there may be a long wait. It can be quicker to refer yourself but you will have to pay – the cost varies depending on the centre. If the assessment shows that your medical condition makes it unsafe for you to drive, the RSA can tell you to stop driving until your condition improves. In this case, you’ll need to reapply for your licence if, and when, you’re able to drive safely again. The RSA will provide you with a medical explanation and, if possible, state when you should reapply. Talk to your GP before reapplying for your licence. Adapting your car If you have a medical condition or disability that makes it difficult to drive, a Mobility Centre should be able to help you decide on some adaptations that are right for you.

Page 38 Mature Living April 2014

There’s a range of equipment available including: car key holders hoists to lift you and your wheelchair special cushions or swivel seats to help you get in and out of the car. It’s also sometimes possible to make modifications to car doors and seats. Upgrading your car If your car is an old model, upgrading to a newer one might help. Newer models tend to have helpful safety features, such as power steering and anti-lock braking. In some cases, power steering can be tailored to suit a person’s strength. Many new models also feature

Making the decision to stop driving It can be difficult to accept, but if you think your driving ability has deteriorated or your reactions aren’t as sharp as they used to be, it might be a good idea to consider stopping - you may be putting yourself in danger, as well as pedestrians, your passengers and other drivers. If your friends, relatives or partner think you should stop driving, ask them to explain why, and try to put your feelings aside. Remember they’re likely to have your best interests at heart. You could also get a second opinion from someone you trust: consult your GP, or have an objective assessment of your driving skills. If you’re considering giving up driving, you may be concerned about the costs of using public transport, especially if you don’t qualify for any concessions. But try adding up the amount you spend on car tax, insurance, maintenance and petrol in a year – you might find that using the alternatives works out the same as, or less expensive than, running a car. Tips for driving safely Even if you’ve been driving for years or consider yourself to be experienced, it’s important to think about whether you’re driving safely. 1. Have regular eye and hearing

tests If you’re prescribed glasses for driving, make sure you wear them and ensure that your faculties are good enough to be safe on the road. 2. Maintain your car Check your car regularly and take it for an annual NCT. If you’ve had the same car for a while, consider whether it’s still suitable for your needs. 3. Be comfortable Drive only when you feel comfortable doing so.This could mean avoiding bad weather or at rush hour, for example, if it makes you feel anxious. 4. Read the rules of the road It may have changed since you learnt to drive, so it’s worth refreshing your knowledge. 5. Adapt your car If you have a health condition or disability that makes it difficult to use your car’s controls, there’s a wide range of adaptations that can help. Sometimes just upgrading to a newer model with power steering can make a world of difference. 6. Follow your instincts It can be hard to accept when we’re no longer able to do something safely. However, if you feel that your reactions aren’t as sharp as they were, or your ability has deteriorated, you should consider whether it’s time to stop. Alternatives to driving vary from area to area, but it’s worth researching what’s available, particularly if you think you will need to stop driving soon. If you’re older or disabled you may be entitled to a free travel pass. There may also be a community bus service, taxi scheme, or dial-a-ride minibus service in your area.

Hollybarn Dog and Puppy Training

1 April - 7 November inc.

H

ollybarn Dog and Puppy Training was originally set up in the West of Ireland and is run by leading Irish Dog Trainer, Animal Behaviourist and qualified Veterinary Nurse Emma Whelan Dip VN, RVN, Dip CAPBT. Emma has over a decade and a half of experience in the Veterinary industry and the Dog Training and behaviour world. Emma qualified from UCD Dublin, Ireland before going on to study dog training and behaviour in the UK. “As a child growing up with my own Chocolate Labrador “Rommel” I realised the only thing I wanted to do was to work with animals. After working in the veterinary industry and with animals now for over 15 years my outlook still hasn’t changed. It has been, and continues to be, my only passion and an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable part of my life.” Emma has an unwavering passion for animals and their well being and has been involved in canine and animal behaviour, psychology and training since being very young. It is difficult to find anyone as enthusiastic, as dedicated and as knowledgeable as Emma in the Dog Training and behaviour world. Emma has earned many academic credits to her name including being a qualified Animal Behaviourist, Veterinary

Nutrition Adviser, and an Advanced Pet Health Counsellor as well as being an advisor to many dog and cat rescue centres and charities both in Ireland and the UK. This combination of skills and dedication has made her one of the most successful and well respected Dog Trainers, Animal Behaviourists and Veterinary Nurses in both Ireland and the UK. “Everyone should have the chance to own the dog they always wanted - I help families achieve this every day and that's a great feeling!” Emma travels Ireland providing One to One Dog and Puppy Training Sessions right at the heart of where people’s problems are - in peoples own

Page 40 Mature Living April 2014

homes. “I ran dog training classes in the past and never felt people got as much out of them as they should. One problematic dog or several different dogs with different learning speeds and people get left behind or get bored. They also run for several weeks and if you miss a week you could miss the part you really wanted. A two hour session in someone’s home is far more effective and better value for money for the owner” For the real problem dog Emma also provides the option of Residential Training. This is a two week course where the dog actually lives in Emma’s home (no horrible cages or kennels) and is trained from dusk until

dawn. “I find the intensity of a dog being trained constantly from waking up to going to bed works incredibly well for the dog with real problems. The satisfaction of returning a dog after two weeks and handing back just what the owner

wanted is exhilarating.” Emma also does dog boarding in her own home so no matter what problem you have even your holidays are covered. Call 087 782 3957 or Visit www.hollybarndogtraining.com
