A great day at the Home International Crosscountry in Glasgow where our two lads Emmett Dunleavy and Richard Gorman ran fantastic and assisted the Irish team to win team medals. A fine run by Richard saw him finish a brilliant 7th and win Team Silver on his Irish debut as an M40. Congrats and well done lads on a fine achievement. Pics Credit: Emmett Dunleavy

Ej Sligo All-Stars 83 Dublin Lions 64

O

n Sunday 4th December Ej Sligo All-Stars travelled to Clondalkin for the second time this season to play the locally based Dublin Lions in the quarter final stages of the President’s Cup. The travelling team were coming off the back of a huge victory against Ulster Elks of Belfast who were previously undefeated in the league. The last encounter between the two sides was 4 weeks previous in which the Sligo side won comfortably enough 87-84 but cup competition is a lot different and anything can happen. Indeed Lions had caused one of the biggest upsets of the season so far by toppling Elks in the first round of the competition while Sligo overcame Tolka Rovers themselves. Coach O’ Meara would have been nervous enough with this fixture as his side were definite favourites and that tag is sometimes more of a burden than a bonus. Complacency was a huge risk and this coupled with a litany of injuries and illnesses could easily have proven problematic. “We were missing a lot of guys during the week due to illness and work commitments which meant we weren’t as well pre-

pared as I would have liked for such an important fixture. It was extremely difficult to put a game plan in place when numerous members of the squad were unavailable for one reason or another” Ej’s started with Mc Garrity, Noel , Lally, Brockmann and O’ Reilly and despite great effort and commitment they struggled to establish a major lead in the first quarter. It seemed as though the team were struggling to develop the chemistry displayed on numerous occasions over the previous few weeks but Dublin Lions were also struggling and they committed a number of turnovers which the All-Stars were able to capitalise on. Although the Sligo side looked a much more skilled and composed side they failed to rack up the scores they have recently managed. They did however manage to stretch their lead to 9 going in at the half on the back of some fine shooting (8 points) from Ballisodare native Tobi Brockmann who had found his touch. Some aggressive rebounding from Emmet Keogh paid dividends in this quarter and it kept the Dublin side’s second chances to a minimum. Ej’s finished the half with a 35-26 ad-

vantage. Neither side would have been too happy with their first half performance which was littered with unforced errors and missed scoring opportunities. It looked like the basketball gods might be frowning on the Yeats men as their veteran leader, Ronan Mc Garrity went over on his ankle early in the 3rd quarter and had to be withdrawn from the action temporarily. Lions looked like they might close the gap with some big shots from Sabic (11 points in 3rd quarter) but Noel and Brockmann kept the scoreboard ticking over. It was the re-introduction of Mc Garrity in this quarter that proved the undoing of Dublin Lions plans of a comeback. Immediately after his return he nailed a 3 to push the lead to 10 for Ej’s men. Some fantastic interplay with Brockmann saw Mc Garrity score one of the best worked scores of the game as they dragged the Lion’s defence over and back the floor with smart penetration and passing. Another 3 and a layup from the Ballina native put his team in the driving seat having opened a 15 point lead. Mc Garrity wasn’t done yet though as he netted another 4 points

(12 in the quarter), helping his side to a 31 point quarter. His coach had plenty of praise for him after the game: “At 6’5’’ he (Ronan) causes a lot of matchup difficulties for the opposition. He still has an electric first step and has great finishing ability off the dribble so bigger guys struggle to stay in front of him. When they (Dublin Lions) put a smaller player on him he was able to post him up and out muscle him or simply shoot over him. He really is the xfactor for us this season and has brought the composure and experience you really only get with veteran players. He’s shown more and more flashes of the brilliance I always associated with him as a younger player so hopefully the best is yet to come!” The All-Stars now led by 19 going into the final period of the game and despite the best efforts of Sabic and Markiewicz the All-Blacks never relinquished their lead finishing the game with a fantastically worked 3 pointer for Ballymote man Julian Jarmolowicz who played his best game to date. Indeed Lee Sherlock also showed improved composure on the floor and a huge work rate on defence. O’

Meara was very pleased overall by his side’s 5th successive win in their first year at his level. ” Each of the 9 players who took to the floor gave their all and it was reassuring to see Brockmann, another very young player find the shooting form he is capable of each week as he finished the game with 21 points. However it is very easy to take the performance of Kaylim for granted as he has been so consistent all season. He finished the game with 26 points and 14 rebounds which has been his average all season. ” Ej Sligo All-Stars Kaylim Noel 26 pts 14 rebounds 4 assists 3 stls 2 blocks Tobi Brockmann 21pts 4 rebounds 5 assists 2 stls Ronan Mc Garrity 18 pts 8 rebounds 3 assists 2 stls Cian Lally 8pts 8rebounds 3 assists 6 steals Oisin O’ Reilly 4 pts 1 rebound 1 assist 2 steals Julian Jarmolowicz 3pts 3 rebounds 1 assist Emmet Keogh 2pts 5 rebounds Philip Hamilton 1pt 4 rebounds 1 assist 2 steals 2 blocks Lee Sherlock 2 rebounds 1 steal. T

he EJ All-Stars Basketball club has been steadily growing in stature over the last few years. The Sligo side’s profile has risen dramatically, thanks to the hard work of director Shane O’Meara, coach Pau Vilá, and a host of other behind the scenes names. With the latest influx of new blood into the National League team, success is now firmly within their grasp. We caught up with latest signing Mayo Senior GAA star Aidan O’Shea, along with player, coach and mentor Kaylim Noel, to talk about the exciting evolution of the All-Stars. On the court; Eamon O’Neill. Watching Sligo’s All-Stars training, it’s difficult not to be impressed with the apparent effortlessness at which they operate. With smooth grace, the players slide around the court, each as determined as the other to play their part in scoring that winning hoop. It almost looks too easy, so it’s a relief, in some ways, that when I finally get to chat to Aidan O’Shea, he’s showing the breathless signs of a good work out. The Mayo GAA star has just joined the Sligo team, and despite county rivalries elsewhere, he’s happy to be here; “It’s nice to be out with the lads”, he says simply; “we won our last two games, and I’m looking forward to the next one and getting another win, hopefully”. Coming on board just over a fortnight ago at the time of writing, Aidan has infused the already galvanised All-Stars with a new found momentum: “Oh it’s great. Aidan has a history in Gaelic, and I think it translates over really well”, says team mate and club coach Kaylim Noel; “he’s an athlete, number one, and then he has a basketball IQ, so the transition is easy with that list of skills”. If anyone is qualified to judge, then it’s Kaylim. Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, the professional player joined the Sligo side just under twelve months ago. “I was in Dublin last year, playing in the premier league, and I was headed back to the States when I got a call from Shane offering me the opportunity to come to Sligo”, he says taking up the story: “it sounded pretty solid, so that’s what brings me here”, he explains. And solid certainly seems to be the appropriate word. Breaking back into the National League for the first time in years, the club has grown to become real contenders. If the drive and determination was already there, then the presence of an experienced player to motivate the younger members of the club was an added bonus; “They just wanted to bring in a professional, to bring some mentorship and leadership”,

says Kaylim; “that’s my job, and it’s been easy. There really is some young talent here, and they take the game seriously, so it’s been great so far.” Like all good teams, it’s all about cooperation, and the signing of Aidan to the National League side has been good for both parties: “Aidan’s a big time athlete in Ireland”, enthuses Kaylim; “and with his work ethic, it brings with it some more leadership. Because we’re a young team, bringing some maturity is really important”, he affirms. Aidan meanwhile, is as complimentary about his newest teammates; “The boys have been great. They’re serious players, and I’m just glad to be able to train with them”, he says modestly. Clearly used to being on sports’ biggest stages, despite being part of the Mayo team that reached the All Ireland Senior Football Final not once, but twice in 2016, Aidan remains grounded when I ask whether the transition between the two sports has been a smooth one for him: “No, I wouldn’t say it was easy”, he offers without hesitation; “I haven’t played the game in a while, but it’s just nice to be able to come back and get on the court”. It’s the good feeling at the club itself however, that seems to have buoyed the sportsman; “There’s a good vibe in Sligo at the moment”, he says, adding; “and hopefully it’s a sign of things to come over the next couple of years”. If Aidan’s experience in Irish sport sets one example for the youngsters of the club, then Kaylim brings with him a taste of what it’s like to play in the big leagues across the Atlantic, and though basketball is still growing in Ireland, the American is encouraged by what he’s seen so far here: “There’s definitely a demand for basketball in Ireland, and in Sligo especially”, he beams; “It’s not the number one sport, but there’s a real hunger here for basketball”. However it’s also the commitment and enthusiasm of the supports that plays a major part in the fortunes of the club. Where soccer fans will tell you that their team is nothing without the ‘twelfth man’, if the same analogy applies to basketball, then the All-Stars aren’t found wanting: “In Sligo, everybody’s really up for it”, says Kaylim: “If you come here on a Saturday, they’re screaming loud and they’re really behind us.” All of which means that the vital signs are looking good for the year ahead: “We’ve two teams at the top of the table, six in all, and we’re looking just to improve our record going through the season”, explains Aidan: “We’ve got the cup coming up again in a couple of weeks’ time, and we’re just trying to keep progressing, and with Kaylim on board, the future looks bright for the rest of the season”. Ever the diplomat, he adds; “Hopefully we’ll keep that record improving, and go up the table.” For now, it’s “one game at a time”, according to Aidan, however the pair’s pride in what’s been achieved so far is almost palpable: “There’s almost three hundred kids in the club now, and they love it”, says Kaylim. Is Sligo is the place to be for quality basketball, I ask? “Oh definitely”, he confirms; “the club is really doing big things; they have aspirations, and they want to keep growing. In parting, I suggest that win or lose, the All-Stars are already winners: “Without a doubt”, nods Kaylim; “it’s one of the best clubs in Ireland.”

S

Glen Patterson who won the U23 Interprovincial Indoor Rowing Championship and Declan Nugent of AVENA who facilitated Glens Indoor Training Programme

aturday November 26th saw a number of Sligo Rowing Club athletes compete at the Inter Provincial Rowing Championships which were held at University of Limerick. Senior oarsman Glen Patterson who has rowed with the club since his teenage years and who has won at junior and senior level at many of the country’s major regatta events has again taken another step forward this year by winning the Under 23 Interprovincial Indoor Rowing Championship which was held at University Limerick with a winning time of 6.18.9 over 2000 metres. Cognizant of the fact that a national rowing title continues to elude club Glen together with coach and 4 times national championship and Henley Senior Eights Medal Winner, Tom Colsh made the decision that more emphasis should be placed this season on gym work and in particular on the rowing machine during the winter

months. Thankfully Declan Nugent of AVENA came to the assistance of the club in this regard and made the AVENA facilities and rowing machines available to Glen to implement his training programme as set out by Colsh. The clubs win at UL can be directly attributed to the generosity of Avena for which Sligo Rowing Club is sincerely grateful. Sarah Kisby who competed at the national event for her first time also did an excellent job in representing Sligo on the day in the Girls

Junior 15 category. One week later saw Sligo Rowing Club take to the water for their first competitive water event of the 2017 season Carrick on Shannon Head. The club again took home some silverware with Glen taking home the Intermediate Singles title and Brian Colsh and Mark Coen winning their first title in the Junior 15 doubles category. The season bodes well for this young double who have improved enormously since the beginning of the season

Sligo started off strongly and put the visitors under some early pressure. After 5 minutes Sligo’s influential half back Ryan Feehily combined with local speedster Aaron Spring on the back of a dominant scrum. However, this move was brought to a halt after some neat back line play ended with a knock on as a result of the slippery conditions. Two minutes later though Sligo were rewarded for their early dominance as former county GAA player Conor Kerins, fielded a high ball Aussie-Rule style, the ball was then given to playmaker Michael Wells who evaded the Midleton cover and was brought down just short of the line.Feehily quickly got to the ruck and sniped his way around all the defenders to go in untouched for an early 5 pointer. Kerins was unlucky

with his conversion attempt but Sligo were now 5-0 up.Midleton responded well to going behind as they started to put pressure on the Sligo rearguard. Sligo held firm and held them out after Midleton put together some nice passages of play as well as via Ryan Feehily, who managed to manoeuvre his body under the ball when the tryline was at their mercy.Midleton’s pressure would eventually be converted into points as they went over following some lovely backline play which resulted in their no.14 going over in the corner. Midleton’s outhalf expertly converted the touchline conversion to put the visitors ahead 7-5 after 21 minutes. Sligo came roaring back as they began to gain territory in the Munster men’s half. On 28 minutes Sligo’s powerful young centre Daire Byrne fended off his opponent and ran from opposition 22’ into the corner.Kerins failed to add the extras as Sligo now led 10-7.This lead didn’t last long as Midleton responded with a penalty in front of the posts after tight head prop Conor Mitchell was adjudged to be offside. The

score now stood at all square 10 all. On the stroke of half-time Sligo took the lead into the break. Constant pressure resulted in a Sligo scrum from there Feehily fed the inspirational Byrne who again used his handoff to evade the challenge from the visitors and then popped inside to his centre partner Mark Rooney who went in for another well worked try. Kerins was unlucky with his touchline conversion attempt to leave the half time score at 15-10 to Sligo. At the resumption of play both sides tried to get a foothold in the game as the game ebbed and flowed in this enthralling encounter. However, on 47 minutes Midleton were rewarded for incessant pressure as they converted this pressure into points. Midleton claimed their own lineout in the oppositions 5m line and the visitors cleverly mauled their way to the line to put 2 points between the teams after their no. 10 added the extras.Sligo came back at Midleton again as both teams looked for the elusive win. Midleton’s no.5 was penalised for handling in the ruck

and was subsequently sent to the sin bin. From the resulting penalty Sligo again failed to convert their kicks into points.3 minutes later though Sligo capitalised on their man advantage as they got a foothold in the scrum, the loose ball was picked up by the wiry Feehily who darted his way in for the bonus point try from a great individual effort.Sligo failed to add the extras and they would be left to pay for their inaccuracies in front of goals. On the hour mark, Sligo had a great opportunity to extend their lead when they put together some lovely moves after yet another dominant scrum in the oppositions 22’ however this was to no avail due to crossing. On 67 minutes, Sligo were again thwarted as they made great inroads in Midleton’s half following some fine interplay from both the forwards and the backs. On 71 minutes, replacement full back Jack Keegan fell just short with his penalty from a different angle to add to their lead. The aforementioned Keegan made a fine break near the end of the game and combined well with his teammate Daire Byrne

who fed Rooney but unfortunately the pass went astray and was knocked on at the crucial stage.Sligo were made to pay for their missed chances and errors as Midleton clinically scored a match winning try from a 5m scrum through their full back, who dummied the cover and dived in to snatch victory at the jaws of defeat. Sligo management and supporters will be disappointed with this loss as they were completely dominant in many facets of the game but will be happy to get 2 points instead of nothing - one for the bonus point and one for losing by less than 7 points. INNISFREE WHEELERS S anta Cycle 2016 and other events. The dust had hardly settled for the new committee of Innisfree Wheelers when the action started for yet another cycling year. Registration & Club gear night; This took place on the 1st of November, and by all accounts it was a very successful event. More than thirty members signed up again and this included about five new members. We always welcome all new members to our club and we have established a reputation of being a friendly bunch, with no illusions about our own cycling abilities! This year for the first time since our founding, we have decided to give our famous outfits a modern face lift. This has come about as a result of the more fashion conscious female members suggesting a more modern colour combination for the bib shorts. Thankfully this will not affect our now famous jersey colours so anyone with current gear can be reassured that they are still in the club colours. We always encourage members to wear the club colours on as many occasions as possible. Contact our PRO John Greene (pro@innisfreewheelers.com) or treasurer John Connolly (treasurer@innisfreewheelers.com) if you require any item of club gear. Summer TT League Presentation night; This event took place in Hugh Moran’s pub in Ballintogher on Wednesday night the 9th of November last. The league consisted of six TT races. 2 x 16k, 2 x 30k and finally 2 x 40k. There were many categories catering for novices,

juniors, ladies, seniors, and all veteran age groups from over forty up to over sixty. The event was well supported during the summer months, although numbers fell towards the end of the series – mainly due to the poor summer weather. The club will shortly come together with the other clubs in Sligo with a view to creating a more attractive summer league in 2017. Innisfree Wheelers would like to thank Hugh Moran for kindly donating the prize to the overall winner of the series. We also enjoyed Hugh’s hospitality when he provided tea and sandwiches after each race. We would also like to thank all the marshals who turned out each evening and especially our time keeper the very experienced Martin O’Hara. Prize winners this year were as follows; Overall winner and 1st Senior – Stephen Mullane. 1st Lady – Erika Murray. 1st Junior – Pauric Maxwell. 1st Novice – Conor Gilligan. 1st over 40 – Pat Moffatt. 1st over 50 – Timmy McCarthy. 1st over 60 – Paul Flynn. Bike Maintenance workshop; This took place in the Knocknarea Arena at IT Sligo on Saturday the 12th of November. David Gunning from Boyle was the outside expert brought in by the club to facilitate members requiring knowledge on any or all aspects of bike maintenance. This ranged from simply oiling the chain or changing an inner tube, to the dismantling of cassettes etc. From feedback received, this was another excellent workshop. David went to all

extremes to give individual attention to the attendees throughout the very informative workshop. We hope to include some more bike maintenance tips in a very detailed two day training course coming up in February of 2017. Full details of this weekend workshop will be announced shortly.

CrossFit is the new definition of fitness - CrossFit creates ATHLETES What is Fitness? For years the fitness industry have been unable to define fitness, until now. CrossFit has defined fitness as “an increase in work capacity across broad time and modal domains”. This basically means fitness should not be determined by any one trait but should be determined by how good an individual is at everything, to achieve this level of fitness we must specialize in nothing.

Front Up, Rise Up: The Official Story of the Rise of Connacht Rugby For years they were the Cinderella province, the poor relations and the weakest link in Irish rugby, the so-called Development Province, who had never won a senior trophy since their foundation in 1885. There had been the first green shoots of a revolution in 2014-15 when finishing seventh in the Pro12 - a record high - in Pat Lam’s second season as head coach. Even so, they started the 2015-16 season as 50/1 outsiders. Front Up, Rise Up is the story of Connacht’s remarkable journey to becoming the Pro12 champions. The story goes inside the dressing-room, takes in their unscheduled, weeklong, bonding trek to Siberia and back for a European Challenge Cup game in November, and all the key twists and turns along the way. It brings us the characters in this Band of Brothers, from the locals such as captain John Muldoon from Portumna to their iconic fans’ favourite Bundee Aki, like Lam a Kiwi from Auckland of Samoan descent, to their

Nigerian-born and Dublin-raised match-winner Niyi Adeolokun. It takes in their troubled professional history, which had them on the brink of extinction as a professional entity in 2003 and led to Connacht and their supporters marching to the IRFU offices in a successful bid to keep them afloat. And it culminates in their dethroning of the champions Glasgow in the Sportsground in Galway and their stunning performance in the final against Leinster in Edinburgh to their open-top homecoming in Galway the next day. In the 21 years of professional rugby, there has been no story quite like it. Author Biography: Gerry Thornley has been the rugby correspondent of the Irish Times since 1997 and is a regular contributor and rugby analyst on both television and radio. His previous books include Trevor Brennan: Heart and Soul which won the William Hill Irish Sports Book of the Year in 2007 and the bestselling Ronan O’Gara: Unguarded (Transworld Ireland, 2013).

The announcer of this century’s most-watched, historic, Chicago Cubs–winning World Series reveals why he is one lucky bastard. Sports fans see Joe Buck everywhere: broadcasting one of the biggest games in the NFL every week, calling the World Series every year, announcing the Super Bowl every three years. They know his father, Jack Buck, is a broadcasting legend and that he was beloved in his adopted hometown of St. Louis. Yet they have no idea who Joe really is. Or how he got here. They don’t know how he almost blew his career. They haven’t read his funniest and most embarrassing stories or heard about his interactions with the biggest sports stars of this era. They don’t know how hard he can laugh at himself—or that he thinks some of his critics have a point. And they don’t know what it was really like to grow up in his father’s shadow. Joe and Jack were best friends, but it wasn’t that simple. Jack, the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals for almost fifty years, helped Joe get his broadcasting start at eighteen. But Joe had to prove himself, first as a minor league radio announcer and then on local TV, national TV with ESPN, and then finally on FOX. He now has a successful, Emmy-winning career, but only after a lot of dues-

Stabler. Ken “The Snake” Stabler was the embodiment of the original Men in Black—the freewheeling, hard-hitting Oakland Raiders. The league’s first swashbuckling pass thrower, the mythical southpaw Southerner famous for comefrom-behind drives late in the game, Stabler led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl championship in 1977. In an era dominated by gentleman quarterbacks like Roger Staubach and Bob Griese, this 1974 NFL MVP, four-time Pro-bowler, and Super Bowl champion was an iconoclast who partied as hard as he played and lived life unapologetically on his own—not the NFL’s—terms. Though Stabler’s legacy is larger-than-life, there has never before been an exclusive account of him, until now. Snake goes deep under the surface of Stabler’s persona to reveal a man who, despite his penchant for partying and debauchery, was committed to winning and being the best player he could be. From his college days playing for Bear Bryant at Alabama to his years with the Raiders under coach John Madden, his broadcasting career to his death in 2015 and the revelation that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as C.T.E., Snake probes the myriad facets of Stabler’s life on and off the field to tell his complete story, and explores how his legacy and the culture and times that pivotally shaped it, continues to impact football today. Pep Guardiola: The Evolution For three extraordinary seasons at Bayern Munich, Marti Perarnau was given total access around the German super club - to its players, its backroom staff, its board

members and, above all, to its manager, Pep Guardiola. In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed account of Guardiola’s first full season at Bayern, Pep Confidential, Perarnau now lifts the lid

on the Catalan’s whole tenure in Bavaria. Pep Guardiola: The Evolution takes the reader on a journey through three action packed seasons as Bayern smashed domestic records yet struggled to emulate that dominance in Europe, analysing Guardiola’s management style through key moments on and off the field. Perarnau reveals how Guardiola improved as a manager at Bayern despite failing to land the ultimate prize in European football, examines his decision to leave Germany to take up the challenge at Manchester City and how his managerial style will continue to evolve in the Premier League. This is more than the story of three seasons with one of the biggest clubs in the game. It is a portrait and analysis of a manager and the footballing philosophies that have beguiled the world. Total Competition: Lessons in Strategy from Formula One Total Competition is the most compelling, comprehensive and revealing insight into what it takes to get to the top in Formula One that has ever been published. Across four decades, Ross Brawn was one of the most innovative and successful technical directors and then team principals in Formula One. Leading Benetton, Ferrari, Honda, Brawn and Mercedes, he worked with drivers such as Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton to make them world champions. Now, in this fascinating book written with Adam Parr (who was CEO and then chairman of Williams for five years), he looks back over his career and methods to assess how he did it, and where occasionally he got things wrong. Total Competition is a definitive portrait of modern motorsport. In the book, Brawn and Parr explore the unique pressures of Formula One, their battles with Bernie Ecclestone, and the cutthroat world they inhabited, where coming second is never good enough. Just as Sir Alex Ferguson used his experiences as a football manager to write Leading, this book will appeal not only to the millions of Formula One fans who want to understand how Brawn operated, it will also provide many lessons in how to achieve your business goals. My Turn: A Life of Total Football Johan Cruyff embodied a footballing philosophy that now dominates coaching

and playing styles in all the leading club sides around the world. You can dispute whether Cruyff was the greatest player ever—he was certainly one of the top three— but he is undoubtedly the player who singlehandedly most changed the nature of the game. My Turn tells the story of Cruyff’s remarkable career, built on the techniques he learned playing in the streets of postwar Amsterdam while hoping to be noticed by the city’s most famous club, Ajax. He would eventually inspire that team to eight league championships and three European cups. He won his first of three Ballons d’Or in 1971 at age 24. In 1973, Cruyff was sold to Barcelona for a then– world-record transfer fee. He led the Catalans to victory in La Liga for the first time since 1960, and went on to leave a lasting mark on Spanish soccer. In the 1974 World Cup, Cruyff propelled the Dutch team to the final for the first time. Cruyff’s lasting influence, however, is not in the medals he won, but in the style of play he epitomized and then applied to the Barcelona and Ajax teams he coached. His vision of “Total Football” transformed the way soccer was played, and its dazzling fluidity became the basis of the most admired sides around the world. He was the sport’s uncompromising genius on and off the field of play.

SLIGO ROVERS ARE ANNOUNCE OUR FIRST TWO NEW SIGNINGS FOR THE 2017

Shaun Patton

S

ligo Rovers are delighted to announce our first two new signings for the 2017 season in Shaun Patton and Kyle CallanMcFadden. Callan-McFadden is Ireland under-21 international defender and signs subject to international clearance. His career started with Norwich City and he comes to The Showgrounds from MLS club Orlando City. Born in Ramelton, Co. Donegal he had a successful underage career with Norwich playing in the team that won the prestigious FA Youth Cup in 2012-13 over Chelsea and captaining the club’s under-21 team. From there he made his way through to the first team with the Championship club and made his debut in a League Cup win over Crawley Town in August 2014. Last summer saw a move to the United Stated where he has played with Orlando City up until now. The 21 year-old has over 30 Irish underage caps playing every age level from under-16 to under-21 and captaining his country several times. Goalkeeper Patton has signed with The Bit o’Red from Derry City. The 21 year-old from Letterkenny has also played for Finn Harps and will provide competition for Micheal Schlingermann who is

Kyle Callan-McFadden. already signed. Patton made his debut with Finn Harps in March 2012 at just 16 years of age. He made a further 10 appearances with the Donegal club before being signed by Derry City at the end of 2014. He played eight times with Derry as he battled there for the first team spot with 2016 goalkeeper of the year Ger Doherty. Manager Dave Robertson is delighted to make his first new signings of the off-season. Speaking first on Shaun Patton: “This is a fantastic signing to get done. Goalkeeper is an important area to have secured. Shaun becomes our first new signing and we are excited that he is. I think he will be a great signing. Shaun is full of potential and I think he can have a great career here with this club.” Patton is well known to Rovers assistant manager Declan McIntyre who he has worked with before so Robertson has learned plenty about the prospects of the young keeper: “There is a great opportunity for him to come here and work with Micheal Schlingermann and Declan McIntyre, who he has worked with before. Declan knows him and he knows what he needs at this stage of his career in order to kick on. He will continue to get better working here.

“It is very important that we have a competitive environment here and he will bring that. He will always be pushing Micheal for the first team place. He will be in a position that if we need to call on him, and I am sure we may, he will be good to go.” Speaking about CallanMcFadden the Rovers manager says he has acquired a high quality defender in the Donegalman. “Kyle is an excellent defender first and foremost, that is the reason why we have signed him. I have seen him play and he is a defender with tenacity, a willingness to defend and good ability on the ball. He is also a very strong leader. “He is someone I think can come in and do really well straight away. He has vast experience from his years with Norwich City where he captained the youth team. He has spent the last couple of years in Orlando gaining more experience. He is from Donegal and will be returning to live here with his wife and child. He will come here ready to hit the ground running. I am looking forward to working with him. “He signs here with a very good pedigree. He has a maturity beyond his years. He will add to the squad and its dynamics. As a defender he has good pace so he can defend against the quicker players but is also strong and proven against all tops of forwards.” Gary Boylan, Regan Donelon, Mick Leahy and Tobi AdebayoRowling have all been retained from last year’s defence and Robertson sees his squad as very strong in that area but is still looking for further additions: “We have good strength in the defensive side. There’s already competition at centre-back with Kyle joining Gary Boylan and Mick Leahy and then we have Regan and Tobi in the full-back areas. There is good players in that defensive group but I would still like one more. I think that area can be a real strength for us and but it will be great if we can add more cover as it will be needed. “I am hoping to sign another three altogether in the next couple of weeks. That will take us to 16 or 17 and then we will add another few final pieces in the January transfer window.”

Sligo v Ballinrobe Sligo took to the field inHamilton Park on cold dry November afternoon . This was always going to be a heavy hitting physical encounter against a. Connacht Team with aspirations for promotion. Immeddiately from kick off a battle of physicality ensued . The first score came from Ballinrobe with a penalty against a Sligo player for being offside .3-0 to Ballinrobe . Sligo began to settle into the game building phases with a pack that were dominant ,a front row of Thomas Gormley , Ross Oboyle Ger Kearney making their presence known A .Sligo penalty hit the post leaving Ballinrobe ahead for the first quarter of the game . The Sligo pack maintained the pressure on the Ballinrobe try line and after 3 collapsed scrums the referee awarded a penalty try which was duly converted by Enda Gavin ..7-3 to Sligo .Ballinrobe always famous for their never give up attitude returned with a fine try in the corner which they converted giving them the lead again for a second time 10-7 . Sligo continued to work hard with the pack led by Michael Mcmorrow up the field and on the 33rd minute Jake Sexton scored a fine try converted again by Enda Gavin 14-10 Sligo ..Sligo now in the ascendancy scored again with a second try by a rampant Jake Sexton leaving the score at half time 19-10 to Sligo . The second half continued with the physical battle between every man on the pitch, Ballinrobeagain were the first to score with a penalty for an off side Sligo player which they kicked leaving the score 19-13. Ballinrobe had no intention of giving up their promotion challenge they sensed an opportunity for a comeback but this was quickly squashed by a fine try from Mark Gerraghty and converted by Enda Gavin The Sligo back line acquitted themselves well with both great attacking moves and a strong defence leaving the final score 26-13 to Sligo . Ballinrobe in the final moments continued to pressure the Sligo line and despite a number of attempts they could not break the Sligo defence . Sligo earned this hard bruising win by shear determination amongst a group of players who have committed themselves to each other . Paddy Pearson and Roger Burrows will be pleased with the game especially the determination of his players not to allow Ballinrobe to break the line in the final 10 minutes . Man of the Match Jake Sexton Sligo have a number of hard games over the coming weeks leading up to the Christmas break and these results will define the team that has the potential to win this league .Next Sunday sees Sligo travel to Tuam who are top of the league so another battle is expected . COMMUNITY GAMES NATIONAL AREA, VOLUNTEER AND MEDIA AWARDS 2016

O

n Saturday 26th November, over 350 Community Games volunteers from all over Ireland attended the National Area, Volunteer and Media Awards in the Salthill Hotel in Galway. MC for the night was Tony O'Donoghue and distinguished guests included former Olympian Olive Loughnane, Minister Sean Canney, Deputy Mayor of Galway Pearce Flannery, County Galway GAA Chairman Noel Treacy, Former DTTAS Secretary Donagh Morgan, Councillor Peter Keane, Philp Gillen of the HSE, Brighid Carson of INM Group and Aidan Doyle of Kia Ireland. The Awards Ceremony is now in its 24th year and is one of Community Games most celebrated and prestigious events with over 100 prizes being awarded on the night. Adult and Youth Volunteers are the cornerstone on which Community Games is built and these Awards reflect the tremendous work being carried out at grassroots level across all four Provinces. Media winners were nominated and judged in a variety of

categories such as best ‘Social Media’, ‘Best Regional Newspaper’, ‘Best Area PRO’ and the Irish Independent sponsored ‘Best Published Article and Best Published Picture’. The marketing of Community Games at regional level is as important as the marketing at National level and something we encourage among all of our volunteers. The night was particularly special for Jimmy O'Regan in Limerick who won a brand new Kia cee'd GT Line sponsored by the Official Car Partner Kia Ireland. The raffle was held ahead of the Golden Jubilee with tickets being sold Nationwide from last August. Each Area that sold tickets retained 70% of the proceeds to assist in their drive to raise development funds for their own areas. Runner up prizes for The Golden Jubilee Raffle were Hotel Vouchers from 12 Irish Hotels. The Golden Jubilee raffle proved to be so successful that a separate draw was held for the many areas who sold over 4 books of tickets with Steelstown in Derry winning €500. Olive Loughnane, a former

Community Games participant, Olympian and 2009 World Champion in athletics said: "When I was picked to go to Mosney in 1992 it felt like I had

qualified for the Olympics! I was a late developer and being chosen to be on the team was an amazing confidence boost for me. I made some wonderful friends and great memories. I remember trying my best and not being too concerned whether I won or lost once I knew I had tried my best. That has been my philosophy ever since and I consistently always strive to do my best, win, lose or draw! I would like to thank all the volunteers in Community Games who promote sport, friendship and friendly competition on a daily basis and say well done to all the winners on their awards tonight." Gerry Davenport, President of Community Games said: "I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers in Community Games who give so much of themselves and expect so very little in return, and to our funders and the HSE may I take this opportunity to also say thank you for your continued support. " Joe Fox, General Vice President said: "The Area Awards reward all of those who work at grassroots level. It is a joy to see so many

selfless people here tonight being presented with prizes!" Bernie Brennan, PR and Communications Director said: “Community Games has always moved with the times. There is a tremendous amount of exceptional work being done at a local level, especially in terms of Social Media engagement and we are delighted to see the trend of engaging facebook and website pages being developed and maintained by our busy and enterprising volunteers. Well done to all the winners." There was much cheering as Ballymahon Forgney were crowned overall Area Winners on the night for the second year running! Ballymahon Forgney were also awarded the Steps to Health 2016 Gold quality standard - one of only three areas across the country to be honoured in this way. One of the highlights of the night was when MC Tony O'Donoghue led the way as Community Games took part in the Mannequin Challenge As Community Games gears up for its 2017 Jubilee celebrations one thing is for sure – the possibilities are endless.

E

j Sligo All-Stars secured their 4th win of the season and still remain undefeated at home despite facing their toughest challenge to date. On Saturday last they took to the court against the league leading Ulster Elks who were undefeated to date and were sitting pretty alongside Killorglin on the top of the table. The home side were missing some major fire power in Ronan Mc Garrity who had 17 points last week in the cup victory over Dublin side Tolka Rovers and along with his talismanic scoring big Ronan brings maturity and experience to an otherwise babyfaced All-Stars team. Coach O’ Meara was glad to see the return of the other Mayo big man, Aidan O’ Shea who stayed at home from a GAA Allstar trip to Abu Dhabi to help his new team-mates to an incredible victory. This was Aidan’s first start of the season and he relished every second of his court time, giving his team something that was sadly lacking before his arrival…. Physical presence and rebounding. The game got off to a blistering start with only the minimum separating the sides after the first quarter as the All-Stars led 23-22 going into the second. The starting 5 of Noel, O’Reilly, Mc Loughlin, Hamilton and O’ Shea let the Ulster men know that there would be a battle to be fought. Ever consistent Noel and O’ Reilly

combined for 16 of their sides points but it was the welcome bonus of 6 points from O’ Shea that really impressed the massive crowd in the Mercy gym. Cian Lally was unleashed from the bench just before the second quarter and he brought his usual menace to the court, grabbing huge rebounds and contributing 9 points in the quarter. Ejs played small ball for most of the second period and Elks found it almost impossible to defend the continuous penetration and passing game of the Sligo men. The AllStars opened a gap that must have left their opposition reeling going in at the half as they outscored them 33-18 in the second quarter. Again Noel and O’ Reilly were the main contributors with 10 and 9 points respectively. Going in at half time with a lead of 16 points 56-40 was just what the Sligo men would have wanted but they were only too aware that the Elks were well capable of a comeback. They were league leaders for a reason! The third quarter proved a tough one for the home side as they only managed 18 points during this period. The Elk’s American player Ryan Oliver had been limited to just 2 points in the opening half by fantastic defending by Kaylim Noel but he began to find his range as he poured in 16 points, reducing the All-Stars lead considerably. Going into the fourth quarter the local side had lost the strangle hold they seemed to have on the game but they still held on to a 7 point lead. The northern opposition smelled blood and they seemed to be in the driving seat for the first few minutes of the final period. Scores seemed to be very hard got and mid-way through the quarter it seemed like the

writing was on the wall as the Elks took their first lead of the night 8483. Thankfully this lead was short lived as Aidan O’ Shea made a clutch free-throw to balance the books for Ej’s troops. This was followed by a huge 3 by American import Noel and a pair of free throws from Sligo’s own GAA star Cian Lally. With time running out the visitors were forced to foul to stop the clock and gamble on the Sligo men missing the ensuing free-trows but Kaylim Noel is made of stern stuff as he nailed 7 for 8 free throws in the dying seconds much to the delight of the vociferous home crowd. Indeed Noel finished the game with a grand total of 35 points to lead all scorers. It was his thunderous dunk that earned the biggest cheer of the night and a block on the sharp shooting Marty Mc Donald that sealed the deal for the Sligo men. Ej’s All-Stars next travel to Dublin to face the Clondalkin side Dublin Lions who beat Elks in the first round of the cup last weekend. This game tips off at 4 pm and will be available to view on Facebook Live on the Ej AllStars Facebook page. Their next home game is against Maree of Galway on Saturday, December 17th at 7:30pm. Ej All-Stars Kaylim Noel 35pts 7 rebounds 3 steals, Oisin O’ Reilly 24pts 5 rebounds 5 assists, Cian Lally 19pts 10 rebounds 4 assists, Tobi Brockmann 8pts 4 rebounds 3 assists, Aidan O’ Shea 7pts 10 rebounds 5 steals, Philip Hamilton 2pts 5 rebounds 2 assists 2 blocks, Conor Byrne 2 pts, Luke Mc Loughlin, Lee Sherlock, Emmet Keogh. Missing: Julian Jarmolowicz, Mark Chambers, Peter Papik and Ronan Mc Garrity.

SLIGO SPORT DECEMBER, 2016

Everyone at Sligo Darts would like to congratulate Sean McGowan “Skipper”

Beautiful conditions on blue rock for our older groms. For some of them it was their first time surfing a point break and they all did great.

A

big thank you to all club members who attended the clubs AGM in Strandhill. We had a really positive meeting with great participation from all present and it's great to see so many people wanting to get involved and help out for the next year. We have also expanded the number of people on the

committee and we'd like to welcome all the new committee members into their positions. The pay isn't great guys but the craic is good. The minutes of the meeting will be typed up and sent out to all club members in the next few days. There are some really exciting projects and events coming up over the next year for both junior and

senior members of the club and we'd love to hear from anyone who has any other ideas for what they'd like to see happening in their club. We'd also like to wish club members Jason Southcombe and Andrew Kilfeather the best of luck as they are in Morocco as coaches for the Irish Junior squad taking part in the Europeans.
