HRISTMAS – a time for giving. It has become a cliché, but this year, more than ever there would seem to be no shortage of deserving causes – from the homeless and marginalised in Ireland to the displaced millions impacted by conflict in Syria and elsewhere around the globe. It has been a difficult period for some of the major charities, also, as people who would have given generously heretofore, have begun to ask more questions about the destination of their donations. They are justified in this, of course, but it would be a pity if the Irish tradition of selfless generosity was lost in the process. At any rate there are dozens of local charities to donate to – and we know our offerings will go directly to where they are needed. Local branches of St. Vincent de Paul, an organisation which offers help for almost everything, someone to talk to, money worries, abuse, homelessness, and have been helping people in Ireland for years, should never be overlooked. The annual Lions Collection, apparent in major shopping centres and supermarkets throughout the North-west, is one to look out for. Particular attention should be given to charities that help homelessness, which is everywhere, but predominately in the larger cities: Focus Ireland help the homeless across the country by offering support, education and temporary accommodation. They also help those who are at risk of losing their homes. There are various ways you can help the charity, but mainly through volunteering and donations. You can find out more by visiting their website. The Simon Community also operates nationwide helping the homeless. Continued on Page 2

Christmas – time for giving and taking care! They have centres in most of the main cities and help homeless people and those who are trying to rebuild their lives after homelessness. Their website will direct you. Finding out the local base for many charities is a useful exercise. There are the charities which help children: The ISPCC (Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) is one of the oldest charities in Ireland. They provide support through their Childline service and volunteers who help children who are suffering from abuse, anxiety, stress, grief and risk of drug and alcohol abuse. The charity depends entirely on donations. Then there is Barnarnos, who work with vulnerable children and their families and focus, in particular on children whose well-being may be affected in some way. Barnardos have centres around the country and also offer support for various causes. Their Change a Life, Foster a Child programme is a good example. In both cases their websites will direct you. Some Community Charities, like Friends of

the Elderly and Macra na Feirme (at the other end) are deserving of support. The first is a charity which basically looks after the elderly in our society, organise events, friends to call in for a chat, even Christmas dinner! There are some people in Ireland who are terribly isolated. This is, perhaps, something we should all aspire to this Christmas – to visit somebody who is alone or lonely. The human touch is even more important than a donation. Some local Lions clubs are good at this, but something more systematic is, perhaps, needed. In general, society has changed so much; people don’t call on neighbours any more. Though not necessary in the same vein as other charities, the young people in Macra do exceptional work, particularly in rural areas, to bring a sense of community. They organise local events, sports, travel, drama festivals and the like, and deserve support. When it comes to caring for the sick, The Jack and Jill Foundation, Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Lauralynn House and Make-a-Wish are just some of the organisations trying to make a difference.

We shouldn’t forget our animals either and the work of the ISPCA, DSPCA and Dog’s Trust should be supported – organisations which deal with cruelty and abuse and educate us about the re-homing of dogs and pet care.

TAKING CARE At the other end of the coin, however, we have to take care of ourselves. Apart from the need for precaution with Christmas lights, candles near Christmas trees, toy safety, drink driving checks, etc., Gardai are urging people to transport Christmas trees safely. Meanwhile, people are being urged to be careful while doing Christmas shopping and to hide any presents that are stored in their cars. In addition to drink driving Gardai are reported to be coming down heavily on mobile phone use while driving this Chrismas. On the bright side, Met Eireann report that there is no sign of any really cold wintry weather on the charts. So, the stage is set; all the ingredients are there for a wonderful Christmas. We hope you have a joyous one . . . and a happy New Year, too!

Mayo families given the chance to make history D o you have ancestors who suffered through the Great Famine, which saw 100,000 people die in Mayo alone, or family who fought for their right to a home during the land war in the 1880s. Or maybe a relative who witnessed an apparition at Knock. You may be surprised at the times in which our families have lived, according to a new company which aims to make the past a present for future generations with a revolutionary new way of compiling family histories, which will prove a boon for those planning upcoming celebrations. A unique new service, Histories In The Making, presents people’s family research in a readable and informative way, putting that information into a wider historical context and delivering it in a way that is readable for all the family. They also deliver that research in more tech-friendly way by offering their clients updatable, interactive web pages that can be sent to family members all around the globe. Most families have an amateur historian – the one person who provides information on the family tree if a milestone celebration or gathering is planned. However, with the oral tradition dying, and many families now connected digitally around the world, there is a fear that this information will become stagnant or lost. “We want to package the past for families. Very often, people will either have scraps of information about an ancestor or they might have a vast tome of genealogical research that is difficult to read,” said David Lawlor of Histories In The Making. “We knit their stories together and

package what people have discovered, putting it into a broader historical context. “We produce printed posters and brochures and also offer clients a secure digital file, which is easily updated to the entire family network in real time, allowing the family history to grow organically as time moves on. “Once you have sent the file to family members, any subsequent additions to it will automatically update on the original file received by relatives.” David Lawlor, a journalist and history blogger who has written six novels, likes nothing more than to tell a story. “I want families’ ancestral stories to be personal and not dry pieces of information that people struggle to relate to,” said David. “Histories In The Making brings family histories to life and gives people more of a sense of both who their ancestors were and times they lived in. “As the country starts to wind down its centenary celebrations for 1916, one thing is for sure – the past has never felt so present in all our lives. “Over the course of the year, families here and abroad have looked back at 1916 and at broader events in World War I to see what their ancestors did during that seismic time in history. “An industry has grown up around people’s search to understand who they are and where their ancestors came from. “With more and more families migrating to far-flung lands, the bonds that tie relatives together are being stretched to breaking point. “The oral history that was once passed down from generation to generation about our ancestors is being lost.

“Thankfully, there are family members who will step forward and try to retrieve their pasts through genealogical research. “The downside to that lies in the dry, uninspiring report that is usually the product of such work – which is where we come in.” For further information, go to www.historiesinthemaking.ie or historiesinthemaking@gmail.com

Big Increase in Christmas Shopping trips to Northern Ireland - Poll MOST Irish people have been wondering about the impact of currency fluctuations on shopping patterns since the Brexit vote. In an AA Membership poll of over 9,000 people, over a quarter of those surveyed (25.41%) said they intended on leaving the country between now and Christmas to shop. Northern Ireland and the UK were the top destinations with 12.07% planning a trip to Northern Ireland and a further 5.33% intending to visit Great Britain. These figures represent a significant in-

crease on last year. In a November 2015 AA poll of over 5,500 people 7.3% stated they were planning a trip to Northern Ireland. “It is very likely that the currency is the key factor but it’s probably not the only one.” said Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “There is also a bit more confidence around this year. Traffic volumes are up, employment is up and people are spending more generally. In AA Roadwatch we are expecting cities and city car parks to be very busy in December.”

Irish Water reverses historic trend of under investment in wastewater infrastructure Mayo Irish Water is investing over €12 million for benefit of local community

T

he EPA Urban Wastewater report is a timely reminder of the decades of under investment in wastewater infrastructure in Ireland and the impact that this has had on communities all around the country including Co Galway. This report reflects the status of over 1,000 schemes across Ireland, the lack of historic investment in wastewater treatment plants and the lack of standardised operation and maintenance provided by the industry, which was fragmented and underfunded up to 2014 when Irish Water was established. Using the EPA figures, published today, it is clear that between 2000 and 2010 €270m annually was invested in wastewater infrastructure in Ireland. From 2011 to 2013, there was a 50% drop in investment in wastewater infrastructure to €136m. When Irish Water took over responsibility in 2014, the national utility set about reversing that trend. Between 2014 and 2015, Irish Water increased the investment in wastewater to €166m, an increase of 22%. From 2016 – 2021, the remaining period of the Irish Water Business Plan, the utility is ramping up investment to spend an average of €326m per year on wastewater infrastructure. In addition to this investment, since Irish Water took over responsibility for water and wastewater in 2014, the national utility has prioritised the health of our customers by focusing on improving drinking water. This has taken substantial investment and work at every stage of a very complex treatment, monitoring and testing process.

As with drinking water, Irish Water as a single utility can for the first time have an over-arching strategy on wastewater. The utility has a planned approach which will in time deliver sustained benefits in terms of improved compliance in wastewater treatment. Given the need to prioritise, the immediate investment focus has been on those wastewater projects which will deliver the maximum environmental returns and will be delivered to site quickly. This helps to facilitate future growth and economic investment and ensures that untreated water does not enter our rivers and seas, boosting tourism and protecting the local environment. In Co Mayo Irish Water is addressing wastewater challenges by investing €9 million in a brand new wastewater treatment plant in Belmullet which is one of the 43 towns nationally where untreated effluent is being discharged to rivers and the sea. There is a €2.8 million upgrade currently taking place to wastewater infrastructure in Breaffy, Castlebar. In Ballindine operational improvements were made at the treatment plant while a CCTV survey of the network was also undertaken. The Kilkelly Wastewater Treatment Plant has been removed from the EPA’s Wastewater Action List (WWAL) following confirmation that it is not affecting the river. The Westport Wastewater Treatment Plant was also removed from the WWAL following the installation of ultraviolet treatment by Irish Water which represented an investment of €230,000. Irish Water has carried out monitoring

at the Knock WwTP and found that it is not having a major impact on the stream into which it discharges, while minor works to improve plant performance are being progressed in Balla. New wastewater treatment plants are also being planned for Killala, Foxford and Charlestown with contracts expected to be awarded in 2017. Speaking about the EPA report, Irish Water’s Head of Asset Management Seán Laffey said, “Irish Water collects wastewater from over 1,000 separate communities connected to the wastewater network and treats around 1,600 million litres of wastewater daily before discharging it back into our rivers, harbours and coastal areas. By 2021, as outlined in the Irish Water Business Plan, we plan to have all discharges to our rivers and seas treated before being released. Our programme of work will include, not only improving capacity to ensure Irish Water can facilitate the growth of the new homes and industry but also protecting our coasts, which has a huge impact on tourism and local businesses.” Irish Water has a plan to address all of the issues and concerns, including those in Co Mayo raised by the EPA and is already making progress. For example between 2016 and 2017 482 of our wastewater treatment plants will have upgraded flow monitoring and sampling equipment. This is one of a range of programmes currently under way. Given the size and scale of the challenge addressing all of the issues will take substantial investment and considerable time.

Sligo loses out as 32 Government jobs move to Dublin There has been understandable anger in Sligo with the news that Government Minister Leo Varadkar is about to reverse aspects of the decentralisation programme his department first started back in 1998. It now looks like the Department Of Social Protection Information Service, currently based in Sligo, is to be almost entirely recentralised back to Dublin in what is regarded as an effort to boost Varadkar’s formidable PR machine as the FG leadership contest looms larger on the horizon. Sligo Fianna Fail TD Marc Mac Sharry has launched a scathing attack on the Government following his discovery that Minister Leo Varadkar, the would be successor to Enda Kenny as Fine Gael leader and possible Taoiseach, is set to reverse aspects of the successful decentralisation programme of his department first started in 1988. Located in Sligo for more than a decade this section of the department is responsible for a variety of communications related tasks including

customer complaints, responsibility for welfare.ie the departments much used web site, advertising, translation services and the DSP advertising budget. The Department has confirmed that 32 positions will be moved to Dublin as part of a reallocation of roles, jobs which have been located in Sligo for more than a decade. Deputy Mark Sharry, in a major attack on the decision, said: "This is an outrage. It represents a major policy shift and retrograde step following 30 years of consecutive Government focus on decentralising departments throughout the regions initially to cut costs but more particularly to spread the business of Government throughout the nation and take advantage of the talent pool available throughout the country. "Fianna Fail in Government through Ray Mac Sharry in the 1980s and Charlie Mc Creevy in 2004 made the decision to introduce a policy of decentralisation of Government Departments which has been hugely successful especially in

Sligo and the North West. Staff have been informed that 32 posts will be recentralised back to Dublin. This will create 32 new vacancies in Dublin with increased promotional prospects for staff based there while those in Sligo will face uncertain redeployment to current and future vacancies in the broader DSP infrastructure in the North West” The Sligo based TD continued, “This is an appalling step by Government and particularly Minister Varadkar who has a growing reputation as someone who sees regional Ireland as little more than the weekend retreat for city dwellers. A fact that may well be significant when his party sit down to consider when choosing their next leader. "Leadership of his party is no concern of mine however should he become Taoiseach his clear and blatant discrimination of the regions and the partial reversal of the successful decentralisation programme of the past 30 years is a matter of grave concern to all.”

I know everyone says this all the time, but it's amazing that we find ourselves back around at Christmas again. It really has been a staggeringly fast year. For dentists, in the past number of years the Christmas season has come to mean tooth whitening. It's the thing that everyone seems to want for the party season. It is a natural desire to want a bright attractive smile. Professional tooth whitening is one of the ways in which we as dentists can help our patients achieve this. As with all parts of the body, teeth undergo natural changes with age. Part of this ageing process involves a colour change. Teeth will tend to get somewhat darker and yellower with the passage of time. Tooth whitening procedures are designed to at least partially reverse this change. The process involves applying a peroxide gel to the teeth. As the peroxide breaks down it releases oxygen which causes the colour of the teeth to lighten. The colour change is not permanent however. As the ageing process continues the teeth will gradually darken again if left to their own devices. On average, teeth will gradually fade back to their original shade over a period of 12-18 months. Dietary factors such as red wine or black coffee consumption can shorten this time. Smoking can also significantly stain teeth and reduce the longevity of tooth whitening. Typically the teeth will become between 2 and 6 shades lighter in colour. However, the degree of colour change varies quite widely from one person to another. This variability is influenced by the density and porosity of the enamel and by the colour of the teeth at the start treatment. Teeth which are a yellowish colour will tend to respond well to the process, whereas those which have a greyish tint will generally improve much less.

The one notable side effect with tooth whitening is increased sensitivity of the teeth. Most people who have tooth whitening will experience some sensitivity, but it is normally quite mild. A small minority of people will experience more severe sensitivity. Fortunately, the problem is temporary. The sensitivity resolves within 7-10 days of completing the treatment, and returns to normal. There are 2 techniques available for tooth whitening. One is carried out entirely in the dental surgery. A protective barrier is applied to the lips and gums and a high concentration peroxide gel is applied to the teeth. Some dentists will also shine a powerful light on the teeth to activate the peroxide. The process takes approximately an hour and a half. The more commonly used technique is home whitening. Here, the dentist makes whitening trays, rather like thin versions of a gum shield. These are given to the patient along with a lower concentration peroxide gel. The gel is placed in the trays and they are worn for at least 3 hours each day for 2 weeks. As with everything in life, there is no one size fits all solution. Indeed for some people, tooth whitening may not be appropriate at all. Existing veneers, crowns, bridges or white fillings will NOT change colour in response to the peroxide gel. If these are present on front teeth then they may need to be changed after the teeth are whitened in order to match. Tooth whitening products are widely advertised these days over the internet and from sources such as beauticians. Some of the products available are highly acidic, and can cause great damage to the enamel. Whilst not wishing to denigrate anyone, members of the public should exercise great caution when contemplating having any dental procedure performed by someone who is not a dentist. Only a dentist has the knowledge and skill to provide these procedures correctly, safely and to the standards required.

reland’s internationally renowned and best-known vocal ensemble, Anúna, will appear at Drumcliffe Church in a special concert on Friday, May 5th, 2017 at 8pm, as part of the 2017 Cos Cos Sean Nós Festival in Drumcliffe, County Sligo. The event will also be part of Anúna’s 30th anniversary celebrations. “We are looking forward to this concert at the burial place of W.B. Yeats,” says Michael McGlynn, the group’s composer and artistic director. “There has been a strong connection between our music and Yeats over the years. Anúna will participate in a special event to mark 100th anniversary of the Yeats play ‘At the Hawk’s Well’ in Japan next February - but the opportunity to give a performance at the location where Yeats himself chose to be

buried - Drumcliffe - will be a unique and wonderful event.” Anúna have built up a substantial international profile since their formation back in 1987. They sing unaccompanied and without conductor, with between twelve and fourteen singers in any performance. They are widely remembered for creating the vocal ambience of Riverdance (1994-1996), but their international CV over the years also includes major performances at the BBC Proms, The Royal Albert Hall and the Celtic Connections music festival. While the group is based in Dublin, its membership is drawn from all over the world. A number of Anúna singers have gone on to carve very successful careers as solo artists including singer-songwriter Hozier [2007 - 2012] and five of the lead soloists in the phe-

nomenally successful Celtic Woman. Their unique style resonates very well with the heritage of the Cos Cos festival and the history of the area, according to festival director Brenda O’Callaghan. “In recent years, the Cos Cos Festival has sought to explore and celebrate the local community’s historical connections with St Columba’s monastic site and Yeats through music, song and traditional dance.” “Anúna’s music will be a lovely 21st century reflection reflect on site of that ancient monastic sound.” Anúna in concert will take place on Friday, May 5th, 2017 at St Columba’s Drumcliffe Church at 8pm. Tickets, priced at €25 each are available via coscos.ie, or the festival Facebook page. For more information, contact Brenda O’Callaghan on 0861925988.

Call for Mayo and Sligo Schools to participate in Talent ID Programme Bank of Ireland and Athletics Ireland have joined forces to launch a nationwide search amongst secondary schools to identify and foster talented students. The programme, which aims to encourage greater participation amongst secondary school students in athletics, will culminate in an athletics Mater Class with 200 top students with advice and tips from Ireland’s top sports psychologists, nutritionists and athletes including former European Indoor Championship gold medallist David Gillick. Irish Schools Director Anthony White said: “Increasing participation in sport is a key driver behind the Bank of Ireland Talent ID Programme. We have focused on first years as it is a major transition in their lives and we are trying to make it easier for them to continue to be active. We are excited to be working with Bank of Ireland on this programme and we see it as a great way to introduce the students to the joy of athletics and hopefully unearth the next Irish star.” Participation in the programme will

see Development Officers from Athletics Ireland attend schools throughout the country to select approximately 1,000 students to participate. These students will be coached to develop their potential with Bank of Ireland selecting the top 10 students from 20 schools going on to attend the Mater Class in the state-of-the-art National Sports Campus in Abbotstown in March 2017. Speaking on the initiate, Laura Lynch, Head of Youth Marketing, Bank of Ireland said: “We are delighted to announce our support of the Bank of Ireland Talent ID Programme in association with Athletics Ireland and would encourage secondary schools in Sligo to sign up to participate. The programme will give 200 students access to elite athletes and supports that will help nurture their talent and produce world class athletes who will go on to represent the country on a national stage.” To nominate your school to participate in the Athletics Programme see www.boi.com/athletics.

More funding needed for Autism l l a a G gher l i e N FITTED FURNITURE Services in Mayo W ITH the increase in demand for autism services more funding is urgently required to provide for the needs for children with autism in Mayo, according to Western Care Executive Director Bernard O’Regan. Autism services are ‘under huge pressure’, and Western Care is struggling to provide these and other services with its current funding levels. “The resources available at the moment are the same as the last number of years,

even though there’s been a significant increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism. That is a huge pressure area, and while there is work going on between ourselves, the HSE and Enable Ireland to reconfigure those services and try to use all the resources available to us as creatively as possible, there won’t be enough and that certainly needs some looking at,” he said. “A reconfiguration of how these services are provided Bernard O’Regan

is underway at the moment. However, additional funding is required. The current service for children under the age of six, for instance, has the same level of staffing now for up to 80 children as it did four years ago for 35-40 children.” Mr O’Regan said service providers like Western Care ‘work closely’ with the HSE to ‘try to respond to the needs for support and services’. “But there is a serious need that remains unmet and which can only be addressed through a combination of service providers continually reviewing how services are organised and provided so that existing monies are used to best effect, and through the provision of additional funding by Government to the HSE,” he said. “Some funding has been provided by the HSE to address some urgent needs for residential services in recent years. There remains a significant need for further development of such services. However. eight people in Mayo supported by Western Care would avail of a residential service immediately if funding was available,” he stated. Therapy services With 400 adult service users, it is hard to believe that Western Care only has

Sligo – Designated European Capital of Volunteering Last Monday, December 5th was a great day for Sligo as London handed over the title of ‘European Capital of Volunteering’ to Sligo. This was stated by Independent MEP Marian Harkin when she attended the handing over from London of the title in London City Hall together with representatives of Sligo County Council and Sligo Volunteer Centre. She said:- “Personally, today represents the culmination of my initiative which in 2011 saw the creation of the European Year of Volunteering which has led to the designation of a European Capital of Volunteering. Sligo follows in a proud tradition of Barcelona, Lisbon and London and it is gratifying that Sligo is placed on the same platform as those great cities. “This Award is for the people of Sligo who engage in volunteering activities. It recognises their contribution to building an inclusive civil society where people are valued. Volunteering is the lifeblood of so many communities in Sligo town and county. I am so proud today to be a Sligo woman and to see Sligo people recognised for their hugely significant contribution to volunteering”, Independent MEP Marian Harkin concluded.

a physiotherapist funded for one day a week. “That just isn’t enough,” says O’Regan. “We employ one physiotherapist, and the way she is funded is she works four days a week with children and one day a week with adults. “There has been no provision for developing therapy services for adults in over ten years, and there is a continuing need for speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, social work and behaviour support services. “Then you have associated equipment needs that people might have, updating wheelchairs or profiling beds or specialist chairs or whatever. There’s a constant need there.” Capital funding is another area where service providers like Western Care have been hit in the recessionary years. “Very little capital funding has been made available to the association in recent years. The most recent allocation that we received was in 2013, which was the only funding received since 2009. Because of this lack of capital funding, a significant need for capital investment exists at present. This is particularly so in the areas of building refurbishment and minor capital works, transport, medical aids and appliances.”

Pippa O’Connor shines at the 'Have It All' at Connacht Gold’s Food and Fashion event

O

n Thursday, 1st December, Connacht Gold hosted their glamourous Have It All Food and Fashion with Pippa O’Connor. On arrival at the immaculately decorated ballroom in Kilronan Castle Estate & Spa, guests were treated to a vast selection of delicious Connacht Gold canapes along with a bubbling glass of prosecco to kick off the evening. Brand ambassador, Pippa O’ Connor took to the stage in front of 500 fashion conscious followers, to introduce the evening. The author of

Simple Tips to Live Beautifully hosted a makeup tutorial with Cloud10 Makeup Artist Grace Denny. TV3 chef Joe Shannon also joined her on stage to demonstrate some festive inspired recipes. Pippa finished the evening by giving guests a fabulous styling session with an exclusive look at her latest jean collection, Poco by Pippa as well as offering her tips and trends for 2017. Commenting on the Have it All event, Pippa O’Connor said, “Looking good and living well are two

things I love to do and talk about, so I’m delighted to be involved as brand ambassador for Connacht Gold’s Have It All Food and Fashion event. To me anybody can be stylish; you don’t need to spend a fortune to look and feel fabulous it’s about using your imagination and feeling confident. I feel most confident when I’m feeling well and energetic so it’s really important for me to have foods that are healthy and convenient, like Connacht Gold’s Half Fat butter. I love food and I especially love butter so for me to have good food and good fashion, really is being able to Have It All!” Speaking at the event, Communications and Brand Manager of Aurivo, Karen McGarty, said “Having Pippa O’Connor represent Connacht Gold has been a phenomenal success. We really feel she encapsulates the brand and understands the quality of wholesome Irish food. We have embraced a distinct high-end fashion aesthetic to show Connacht Gold butter in a whole new light, which has allowed us create this unique food and fashion event which we hope to organise again in 2017. The Connacht Gold ‘Have It All’ event also hosted charity raffle in aid of the charity of the year, the ISPCC, which raised over €3500 for

the worthy cause with a range of fantastic prizes including a luxurious hamper with some of Pippa’s favourite products, a getaway for two at the Salthill Hotel Galway and a perfect pamper package at the spa in Kilronan Castle as well as

many more, comprised as giveaways for the raffle

Connacht Gold Half Fat Butter is in shops nationwide. For more information, www.connachtgold.ie

Human Skeleton Analysis Unlocks Secrets To Teenager’s Life In 16th Century Ireland

A

nalysis of a human skeleton discovered in a Co Clare cave sheds light on life and death of a teenage boy from postmedieval Ireland Rescue Excavation funded by National Monuments Service Findings are charted in new book by cave archaeologist Dr Marion Dowd Forensic-level investigations of a skeleton discovered in a cave in Co. Clare have shed fascinating new light on the life and death of a teenage boy who died in the 16th or 17th century. A human skull discovered by cavers in a cave outside Ballyvaughan village in the Burren in 2011 prompted a rescue archaeological excavation funded by the National Monuments Service of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The full scientific investigations of the skeleton have just been published revealing incredible details about the boy’s life. At the time of excavation, the small size of the skeleton led the team to think it was of a child. However, subsequent analysis of the teeth in particular revealed the remains belonged to someone who had died aged 14 to 16 years old. There was evidence of stunted growth, almost certainly a result of malnutrition and hunger. The adolescent measured 4 ft. 1 inch in height – the equivalent of an average 8 year old child by modern standards, or an 11-12 year old by post-medieval standards. The

stunted growth also meant that the sex of the individual could not be determined by normal archaeological methods. Tooth samples were sent to two different laboratories for ancient DNA analysis and both confirmed the individual was a teenage boy. The DNA laboratories were at the University of Surrey in England and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Germany. The director of the excavation, Dr. Marion Dowd of IT Sligo, commented: “This was a highly unusual situation: to find the remains of a malnourished boy in a small mountain cave in what was clearly not a Christian burial, yet he had died only a few hundred years ago. I was eager to get as many specialists as possible involved to try and extract more information about who he was and how he had died.” Osteoarchaeologist Dr Catriona McKenzie at the University of Exeter discovered evidence on the skeleton of chronic infections and vitamin deficiencies. He had sinusitis, which would have been caused by a respiratory infection. The bones also revealed evidence of a poor diet with little meat but high in carbohydrates – probably indicating the boy ate mostly bread and gruels. He had very poor dental hygiene. Radiologist Dr Fran O’Keeffe examined x-rays of the leg bones and was able to determine that approximately once a year, every year, the boy suffered stresses that were so severe as to stop the

skeleton from growing. When growth resumed, thin lines formed on the bones that could only be seen by x-ray. The type of stress he suffered is unclear, but it was probably a combination of starvation, nutritional deficiencies and poor health. “All the evidence from the various specialists told us the same thing: this boy suffered periods of extreme hunger and malnourishment every year, probably for the entire duration of his short life” said Dr Dowd. “We do not know who he was, but there are a few details we can be pretty certain about. Isotopic analysis by Dr Thomas Kador at University College London indicated the boy was local to the Burren. We can imagine he was born and reared close to Ballyvaughan village. He would have been a Gaelic Irish speaker and probably did not speak English. He would have been Catholic, and almost certainly came from an impoverished family.” How the teenager came to be in the cave is a mystery. Neither the archaeological excavations nor the subsequent scientific studies could determine the cause of death. This was not a Christian burial, however. “We found the remains within a small rectangular niche in the wall of the cave. It was a small space, just about big enough for a teenager to crawl into. The position of the bones suggests the boy curled up in this small space and died there, alone in the cold.

There is no evidence that this was a murder victim or a corpse that had been hastily disposed of in the cave. It seems likely, based on the present evidence, that the boy was sheltering in the cave. He may have been crossing Moneen mountain; he may have been fleeing a battle or attack; or he may have been herding sheep in the uplands. Whatever the case, it seems he dropped through the narrow opening in the cave roof, crawled into the niche in the cave wall, and died there unbeknownst to his family or community. All in

all, the excavation provided a very poignant insight into a life that was harsh and ended tragically for this boy in the not too distant past” said Dowd. Her new book detailing the excavations and analyses has just been published by Archaeopress, Oxford: Archaeological excavations in Moneen Cave, the Burren, Co. Clare: insights into Bronze Age and post-medieval life in the west of Ireland. The book will was launched in Hylands Hotel, Ballyvaughan on Friday 9th December.

Home Energy Tips That Save You Money efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy. Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy. Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply.

E

nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. As the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment. Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make

sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water. Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows. Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day. Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing

he pressures of modern life mean people are more stressed than ever before; juggling careers, health, family, finance and everything in between can take its toll if we don’t find ways to manage our stress and prioritise our wellbeing. Whether you’re navigating through a difficult time or simply trying to keep daily stresses from clouding your outlook on life, we’ve got the simple tips and tricks you need to increase your feeling of wellbeing and stay positive whatever life throws at you. Wellbeing vs happiness Mental wellbeing is about more than just happiness. Overall wellbeing involves both the mind and body,

and a deep sense of wellbeing is not just about happiness but about living in a way that’s good for us and good for others. A sense of wellbeing isn’t about eliminating all the bad things from our lives and only focusing on the things that are good and easy, but rather finding some balance and having the resilience to cope with unusual or difficult situations when they arise. Many of the things we think will improve our wellbeing – wealth, more possessions, or expensive holidays – don’t actually lead to lasting improvements on our lives. Despite Ireland being richer than ever before, evidence from census and population studies show we don’t feel any happier than we did 50 years ago despite increases in

In the last 20 years, extensive research has helped psychologists narrow down a list of five key factors that help promote a real, lasting sense of mental wellbeing in our lives. Here’s what to do: Find a connection – Loneliness is especially challenging for us as we age and our families move away or friends die. Connecting with other people is essential for our sense of wellbeing, whether it’s friends, family, community members or colleagues. THE FUREYS

Thurs 29 Dec / €25 - Legends of Irish music & song The Fureys, renowned for their hit songs ‘I will love you’, ‘When you were sweet sixteen’, ‘The Green fields of France’, ‘The Old Man’, ‘Red Rose Café’, ‘From Clare to Here’, ‘Her Father didn’t like me Anyway’, ‘Leaving Nancy’, ‘Steal Away’ etc, return to the Hawkswell Theatre on Thursday, 29th December. The band was

formed in 1978, literally by accident. George, Paul and Davey were playing in Denmark with their own band called The Buskers and Eddie and Finbar, while touring in Germany were involved in a road accident. When George and Paul got news of the accident they immediately travelled to Germany to be with their brothers. They then decided that they should all be playing

Made in a Day exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre The official opening of this exhibition by locally talented artists which took place on Thursday, 8th December, 8pm, runs until Thursday 22nd December. Morrison School of Dance present Cinderella Morrison School of Dance are back in Ballina Arts Centre and this production of Cinderella promises to be a magical night of ballet for Ballina. Early booking advised.

Christmas Cabaret at Breaffy House Resort Breaffy House Resort and Western Care Association are holding a Christmas Cabaret Evening on this Wednesday, 14th December. It will be presented by singer/harpist/TV star Annette Griffin and John Staunton, singer/guitarist with Daniel O’Donnell Band. Other performers on the night will be Gerry Guthrie, Frank Forde and Sean Costello. Dinner and show will cost €50 (Show only €25.00). Tickets available from Western Care (094) 9029136 or Breaffy House (094) 9022033.

The Core: Live Music Showcase together and this was the start of The Fureys. Inevitably, changes have occurred over thirty-eight years. Their brother, Paul, died suddenly in June 2002 and Finbar left the band in December 1996. However, George and Eddie have continued to delight audiences on their tours and have just released a new CD ‘The times they are a changing’ The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he met and shared accommodation in Edinburgh with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty and Alex Campbell, now all famous in their own right. In 1969 he was the special guest for the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem throughout the USA and Canada. Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on guitar when they met up in the North East of England while Dave was still a teenager. Their emotive songs stir many emotions….tears and laughter, sadness and joy.

Paper Trails exhibition Looking for a Christmas present for someone special? You may find it at Paper Trails, an exhibition of drawings, prints and paintings, by Foxford based artist Mary Patterson which runs at Ballina Arts Centre throughout December. Admission free, all welcome.

Music Generation Mayo: Mayo is certainly full of budding young musical talent across a range of genres, as Core co-ordinator Philip Cassidy discovered over the past few weeks. The Core is a place where likeminded musicians can meet, work on musical projects, avail of advice, mentoring, professional support and take part in a range of exciting performance and industry workshops. This is a chance for you to come out and support this core talent as they take to the stage at Ballina Arts Centre on 16th December, 8 p.m. Contact philipcassidy@msletb.ie for full information.
