LL across the North-West – in Ballina, Castlebar, Sligo, Boyle, Carrick and elsewhere – businesses are pulling out all the stops in these last few remaining shopping days before Christmas to try and make up some of the losses suffered during a bleak year in the retail sector. Yet, most of them are struggling to cope with the “convenience” of online shopping for many consumers. In the midst of it all there is another major downside to the changing trend in shopping. According to Repak, our online spending habits this year are set to impact considerably on the amount of waste we’re producing. During a year that has seen an increase of 25% on what can be termed “click and receive” shopping here in Ireland we’re set to produce almost an extra 3,000 tonnes of packaging waste from online shopping - the equivalent weight of 15 million standard size packages. The convenience aspect is easy to see. A well-known conservation campaigner put it in a nutshell: “We’ve all gotten the box, within a box, wrapped in plastic, making the search for our purchases like a predictable version of pass the parcel.” How much of this packaging could have been avoidable? Currently, there

Support the world’s poorest -Liam Cunningham

G

ame of Thrones star and World Vision ambassador, Liam Cunningham, is calling on the public to help the world’s poorest communities this Christmas. 310,000 children are expected to die this December because of hunger. Liam said that no child should go hungry, especially at Christmas. “While we here in Ireland are facing a very different Christmas this year, we are still very fortunate compared to communities in the developing world who have literally nothing.” Liam Cunningham said. “I’ve seen the difference donations make firsthand and I’ve photographed some of the people I had the pleasure of meeting in the field. These people’s lives were turned upside down by war, famine, climate change or persecution. “I have to say, out of everything that I’ve witnessed and seen in the refugee camps, I was most struck by the resilience of human nature. I met people who had everything taken from them but who kept going, nonetheless. I was reminded of Ireland’s history on my trips to the developing world, how Ireland too was a country on its knees that had to fight for survival, I thought about how we overcame famine, war and injustice. The resilience of the Irish people is the same resilience I witnessed first-hand in refugee camps, the resilience that keeps people going through

Choir directors express dismay at Covid rules around indoor carol services

Church Music Directors in the Shannonside Northern Sound region are expressing their dismay at new guidance that choirs will not be permitted to perform at services over Christmas. Due to the increased risk of Covid-19 transmission from people singing in proximity to others, the Health Protection has stated that carol singing will not be permitted at religious services. Recommendations included running additional services, increased stewarding of parishioners, and for churches to set up an advance booking system where necessary for places at services. Musical Director of the Roscommon Solstice Choir Andrew Reynolds says common sense should apply if the congregation wish to sing

hard time or by checking in on a lonely neighbour. “I’ve seen it expressed in ways that I’ll never forget in the developing world. I saw Syrian children holding each other’s hands as they walked through refugee camps, taking care of each other and laughing with each other. I saw small boys in refugee camps in Jordan who seemed to forget all their troubles when they started playing football. I saw young children dressed in bright colours attending their first days of school in the refugee camps, hungry for knowledge and eager to learn. I’ve seen children in child-friendly spaces in South Sudan where they had the opportunity to forget all their problems, to forget the trauma they experienced from violence, malnutrition, disease and conflict children who had the chance to just be children again! I’ve seen children in Uganda getting life-saving medicine and mothers whose faces lit up when they knew their children wouldn’t die from preventative diseases following vaccination.” Liam said Christmas is a time for reflection and an opportunity to give something back. Unnecessary, poor quality and single use plastic encases our food, leaking chemicals and filling up our green bins at home. Less known, however, is the cost of plastic waste on our health. Microplastic pollution is created by the disintegration of plastic as it breaks down in the earth, during incineration, or simply leaking as it sits on a shelf, affecting every single one of us on the planet. According to a recent WWF report the average person ingests around the size of a credit card worth of plastic every week. While experts don’t know the full extent of the long and short term health issues around plastic ingestion, we do know it is linkedto obesity, cancer, hormone disruption and cardiovascular disease. In a difficult year like this it is difficult to be prescriptive in advising people how to behave but maybe when doing Christmas our Christmas shopping we could choose loose fruit and veg as much as possible and maybe try to use zero waste stores and local butchers and fishmongers that will let you bring your own containers.

I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo

Take care of older people while respecting their choices - Alone 4

ALONE, the organisation that supports older people to age at home, is asking members of the public to be mindful of older people’s concerns, while also respecting their choices, especially if they are apprehensive about seeing friends or relatives over the festive period. Reports from ALONE’s National Support line and through their Winter check-in calls, suggest that many older people have increased concerns about the usual social activities surrounding the Christmas season. Older people do not want to put themselves at risk and are worried about meeting up with family over the Christmas period. Some have even reported that they are feeling obliged to do so to avoid upsetting family members. Traditionally, where many older people would’ve travelled far and wide to spend the Christmas period with their families, they are choosing to exercise caution and spend the holiday season alone to protect themselves. ALONE are asking that members of the public respect older people’s wishes when it comes to receiving visitors into their homes and to respect their space when meeting up over the holiday season. ALONE is encouraging members of the public to protect older people in their communities this Christmas by respecting their wishes surrounding plans around Christmas Day and any concerns they may have around COVID-

19. ALONE understands that this has been a challenging year for many older people who have had to make sacrifices to protect themselves from the virus, while the organisation has also noted that older people are among groups considered to be at a high risk for COVID-19. Sean Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, commented, “We understand that this has been a difficult year for older people across the country who have had to take extra precautions to protect themseleves from the virus. We are asking members of the public to consider the older people in their lives by respecting any concerns they may have surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, and not pressuring them to attend social gatherings where they may feel anxious or uncomfortable. It’s natural to want to see all of our friends and family at Christmas, but this year things are different, and we will all need to make some changes to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the older people in our lives.” The organisation are also encouraging older people to stay within a safe ‘bubble’ this Christmas, and to keep in touch via phone calls and socially distant visits to minimise the risk of contracting COVID-19. He continued, “In order to minimise an older person’s chances of coming into contact with a carrier of the virus, we are advising older people to socialise safely within a small group this

Campaign launched to develop GAA pitch in memory of Detective Garda Colm Horkan

Artist's impression of new all-weather pitch at Charlestown Sarsfields GAA club

A campaign is being launched today to fundraise for a GAA facility to be named in honour of Detective Garda Colm Horkan. The 49-year-old was shot dead in Castlerea in June and a man is currently before the courts charged with his capital murder. The Colm Horkan memorial pitch is being developed by the Mayo native’s home GAA club in Charlestown. The club hopes to install a new floodlit pitch and a walkway for the entire community. The campaign is being launched this weekend to tie in with what would have been the Garda’s 50th birthday.

Christmas and to keep in contact with family and friends via phone where possible. We hope that communities will come together to reach out to older people in need of support or assistance, and, if they need it, to encourage them to pick up the phone and get in touch with ALONE.” ALONE recently launched their Christmas Campaign, which encourages members of the public to Give a Helping Hand to the older people in their lives this Christmas. There are a number of ways you can safely support older people this winter, by checking in with older neighbours, friends and relatives to ensure they are warm and have enough fuel to keep the house at a comfortable temperature, or ensuring that on very cold, Winter days that older people in your life have enough supplies in the home to deter them from going out in dangerous conditions. As Christmas draws nearer, the organisation are asking members of the community to check in with the older person in their lives to ensure they have everything they need and if they don’t, link them in with ALONE. Contact ALONE if you have concerns about your own wellbeing, or the wellbeing of an older person you know. Their National Support Line is available seven days a week from 8am – 8pm on 0818 222 024. Romeo Parkes back with Sligo for 2021

S

ligo Rovers are thrilled to announce that Romeo Parkes has signed for the 2021 season as the striker moves to The Showgrounds for a second spell. The 30-year-old was top scorer for the club in 2019 with 11 goals in 30 league games, as well as two in the FAI Cup. Parkes was an instrumental player for Rovers in that season. He returned to America for personal reasons in 2020 and he has penned a deal for the new season in Sligo. Manager Liam Buckley said: “We kept the door open for Romeo if circumstances did work out because we didn’t want to lose him for 2020. “We were hoping he would return for 2021 and today we’re very pleased it has come to fruition. “He did very well for us in 2019, scored double figures in the league and he’ll come back looking to make another big contribution. “It wasn’t just goals, there were some standout performances during that season and he complimented a lot of players we have here. “We are building a squad as best we can with the view to being as strong as we possibly can and make further strides next season. “Romeo will be another strong addition to the group. We’re making more progress and we have more to do so that work continues.” Romeo Parkes said: “I’m coming back with a feeling of unfinished business. I feel I owe something because I remember that FAI Cup semi-final with Dundalk when I had to come

Leitrim council says it is making progress on Carrick bypass route Leitrim County Council has assured local representatives that it is “pushing on” with the planned Carrick-on-Shannon bypass. The meeting to agree the Council’s Annual budget this month heard that the local authority is currently on phase two of the project, with analysis underway of potential constraints. A report on draft route options is expected to be complete by the third quarter of next year according to senior Council Executive Officer Terry McGovern. Councillor Enda Stenson claimed that very little progress appeared to have been made with the project since a meeting with the TII a number of years ago. The meting heard a full team of consultants are currently working on the project and regular communication is taking place between the Council and the TII office in Roscommon. The Independent Councillor says people in the South Leitrim are cannot afford to wait for another ten years to see progress once the routes are published.

Catherine O’Malley v HSE re: Rose O’Malley deceased

This case was before the High Court in Dublin on Monday morning 14th December 2020 for ruling of the settlement. It had been settled for full value solatium plus cost of the special damages and measured legal costs. Callan Tansey pleaded negligence surrounding the insertion, monitoring and application of the PEG tube leading to the untimely death of Rose O’Malley on the 15th March 2015. The delays in accessing medical records and charts for this case were disappointing. The O’Malley family are delighted that Justice has now been administered and the negligent treatment by the HSE of their mother has been acknowledged by the settlement. They are disappointed that their mother’s recovery was thwarted by the complications arising from the PEG tube and her subsequent death due to Septic shock. They do not wish for other people be treated in that way and took a case to highlight the deficiencies in care. Rose was a wonderful community woman and is sorely missed by her family and community. Rose loved GAA and all things local. Arguably her proudest moment was seeing her son Gerard, a former member of the Mayo Senior GAA panel, and her beloved Crossmolina win the All Ireland Club title in 2001.

Age and Opportunity – Helping people keep active through lockdown “I don’t like the idea that if you retire, you retire from everything,” Maureen Murray, participant in Age & Opportunity’s Arts initiatives, says. We couldn’t agree more. Maureen was born in Roscommon, but has spent most of her life living and working in Dublin. She took early retirement from her position in the Central Bank 10 years ago after her husband became ill, and sadly he passed away four years ago. Now aged 66 Maureen says: “I’m proud of my age. I’m still standing and I’m still as active as I physically can be and mentally, I’m 100% as active as I always have been.” As well as numerous interests which include theatre and traditional crafts, Maureen has also been a very active participant in our Arts Programme initiatives over the past number of years. She has attended our Bealtaine Festival workshops, discussions and performances, and has also worked as a Bealtaine Festival volunteer. Currently she participates in our Co-Design Group which aims to establish an Arts and Creative Charter for Older People. We really her appreciate her view of the work of Age & Opportunity. Maureen says: “This is an organisation that I have found will listen and hear what people are saying rather than just token listening.”

Like many of us Maureen has missed seeing her loved ones and friends during the period of the pandemic – however there have also been many positives for her. After her husband’s death she felt like she couldn’t be in the house on her own and went out quite a lot. Since lockdown started she has learned that she can be quite happy in her own company. Also, in May, Maureen took part in a Bealtaine At Home project. ‘Conversations in Portrait with Andy Parsons’ involved Maureen having her portrait painted by artist Andy Parsons. All sittings for the portrait were conducted online via Zoom. This was a perfect project for Maureen as she loves meeting new people and found that she had a lot in common with Andy. She really enjoyed the process and felt that it was a great distraction at a difficult time. Her portrait now sits proudly on her living room shelf. We love how Maureen always see the positives – even in the most difficult of circumstances. We look forward to the day when we can meet up with her again in person, and progress our love of the arts together. Our “I’ve always wanted to try…” initiative gives older people and groups a chance to try a brand new activity they've never tried before. Back in September, before the level 5

awareness drive in an attempt to improve the reporting of adult abuse. The survey found that while 92% of people would encourage or help others to report abuse that was happening to them, just 70% said they would report abuse if it was happening to themselves. This means that almost one-third of adults would not report if they were being abused. According to Safeguarding Ireland chairperson, Patricia Rickard-Clarke, all types of abuse need to be called out and reported. However, she acknowledged that improved clarity is needed on how and

restrictions came into effect, we were delighted to organise Archery and Clay Pidgeon shooting for the Clane Men’s Shed in Abbeyfield Farm, which is located close to where the members of the Men’s Shed normally meet. With all Covid-19 protocols adhered to, the men had great fun and enjoyment over the course of the mornings activities.

Many don't know where to report adult abuse Almost one-quarter of people would not know who to report adult abuse to if they or someone they knew was a victim, a new survey has found. Adults can be victims of many different forms of abuse, including psychological, physical or financial abuse, as well as neglect and coercion. However according to this new survey, 23% of people would not know who to report such abuse to. The findings were released by Safeguarding Ireland, an organisation which works to promote the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. It has launched a new public

where to report concerns surrounding abuse or neglect, especially in the case of vulnerable adults. "There are different public bodies that safeguarding concerns should be reported to depending on the issue, and this can cause confusion. If an abuse concern is urgent and someone is in immediate danger, it should be brought to the Gardai. If it is a general concern about health and welfare it should be brought to the HSE Safeguarding and Protection Teams," Ms Rickard-Clarke explained. The HSE Safeguarding and Protection Teams can be contacted directly about older people, and people with a disability in the community, who are at risk of abuse by another person. Where individuals are in receipt of a health or social care service, they can speak to the service provider or manager about any safeguarding concerns. Meanwhile, concerns about financial abuse should be raised with the relevant bank's vulnerable customer service, a welfare concern should be raised with the Department of Social Protection, while a concern about an organisation or service in the health or social sector should be raised with the Health Information and

Quality Authority (HIQA). According to the recently published 2019 Annual Report of the HSE National Safeguarding Office, it dealt with 12,000 cases of abuse concerns last year. However, Ms Rickard-Clarke pointed to recent RED C research, which found that 12% of Irish adults said they had experienced abuse since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, while as many as one-third reported ever experiencing abuse. "We know that the actual level of abuse is much higher than that which presents specifically to the HSE Safeguarding and Protection Teams. To get a comprehensive picture, safeguarding data would need to also be collated from the Gardaí, the banks and the Department of Social Protection. "To achieve stronger reporting from the public, and more comprehensive data, overarching national structures for safeguarding need to be planned for. Furthermore, stronger safeguarding laws which are in development need to be delivered with urgency," she insisted. BALLINA LIONS SUCCESS IN PRIDE OF PLACE

Support urged for Ballina Goal Mile

...Reward for voluntary spirit!

I

T came as no surprise to the community in Ballina and across North Mayo generally when it was learned Ballina Lions Club took the top Award for towns with a population in excess of 5,000 (Communities) in the prestigious national Pride of Place competition. For the Lions Club members, however, while delighted with the Award as a recognition of what had been achieved, in such unprecedented times, are particularly happy to accept it on behalf of all the volunteers and community groups who are making such a difference to the lives of people, the environment and the pride being nurtured in their local place. Speaking to Mayo Now, David Mullarkey, chairman of the Lions Pride of Place Committee, expressed appreciation for the trust that local people had placed in the club over the years since its inception back in 1978. “While we are happy to put in the work on the ground, the support we receive for all our fund-raising activities is phenomenal and makes it all worthwhile. Without this support we would be unable to carry out most of our activities or have funds to disseminate to the various charities. We value this trust, which provides us with the impetus to continue SERVING, something which is central to everything the Lions do.” “In doing our work we are happy to operate in tandem with all the other volunteering groups in the Ballina area and this Pride of Place Award is essentially an accolade for the entire voluntary sector within the community”. David appreciates the support he received from his POP team (Michael McNamara, Henry Bourke and Colin Syron), in addition to president Ivan Beattie and all the Lions members for their contribution. A few months ago when the Lions Club was honoured to be selected by Mayo Council as one of the groups to represent the county in the Pride of Place they had a short window of opportunity (literally one week) to prepare a submission. Thankfully, with in excess of 60 projects in the annual programme there was plenty of material to work on. Selecting which ones to highlight for the judges was a task in itself. They also produced a video with a sample of their work in the community and the final presentation to the judges gave them an opportunity to showcase the range of projects, their commitment to serve, reach out to the wider community and make an impact on people’s lives, some of the main tenets of the Pride of Place project. “While we are delighted to receive this Award it is humbling and we gratefully accept it on behalf of the community we serve”, said David. The club currently has 51 active members, spread across all sectors of the community, with members from Ballina, Foxford, Enniscrone, Killala and Crossmolina. It functions differently from other community groups as it encourages members to take leadership roles and responsibility for developing, delivering and evaluating projects and promoting good citizenship. This strategy also allows for multiple projects to be undertaken simultaneously. The annual volunteering time extends to some 1200 hours and much of this involves supporting other community groups. Members provide assistance to

Food Cloud Collection, Ballina Salmon Festival, River Moy Half Marathon, Cannon Ball Run, An Post Ras, Quay Festival, Humbert Festival, Belleek Wood Environmental Regeneration Project and members deliver Meals on Wheels on a weekly basis. Some of the organisations provided with direct financial aid include Enable Ireland, St. Vincent de Paul, Mayo Rape Crisis Centre, Western Care, Meals on Wheels, Jack & Jill Foundation, Ballina Community Hospital Patient Fund, Guide Dogs for the Blind and Pieta House. The range of projects undertaken by the club continues to be both diverse and imaginative, some of which involve providing direct help and others consisting of fund-raising for individual or a range of causes. The regular projects – Christmas Food Appeal, Annual Sponsored Walk, Special Children’s Day, Christmas Dinners for those who live alone, senior citizens’ holiday, meals on wheels, timber cutting, visiting the elderly, Simon Community trip, Carers weekend, Food Cloud, diabetes checks, etc. – have been supplemented in recent years by new undertakings. The Lions also provide support of all kinds to other clubs and organisations in the community. While the club members are unable to meet formally at present because of Covid-19 restrictions communication goes on (WhatsApp, etc) and they continue to provide help whenever they can. They made donations for the provision of PPE for frontline staff and local volunteer groups. They also facilitated the interhospital transfer of patients where a medical ambulance was not required and in the absence of a taxi service. They provided transport for individuals with general medical appointments in Mayo, Sligo and Galway. In addition the Lions delivered decluttering contents of households to local charity shops in Ballina while continuing their weekly rota for the delivery of Meals on Wheels and Food Cloud. A number of Lions joined forces with the River Moy Search and Rescue team for a major clean-up operation on the pond in Belleek Woods

Each and every project undertaken by the local club is done willingly with a sense of fun and camaraderie. The members embody the Lions ethos and help various groups and individuals without reward, recognising the philosophy that helping people on a voluntary basis is the most rewarding thing of all. Indeed, many members of the club, past and present, have been recognised both nationally and internationally and recipients of Melvin Jones Awards for service to Lionism. Ironically, Covid-19 lockdown itself came on stream literally weeks after the Ballina Club had hosted one of the most successful National Conventions in the history of the Lions organisation (opened by former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson) on weekend of 6th/7th March at Ballina Manor Hotel during which Ballina was successfully showcased to over 300 delegates from Ireland and Europe. As president Ivan Beattie told us: “We were so lucky with the timing and it all ran so smoothly.” Ironically, though much activity has taken place in the interim, the club has not met formally since that time. In essence the Pride of Place success is a fitting end to an amazing year for the Lions, In spite of all the environmental issues. It was a year which, in a new departure, they facilitated a major Moy Estuary Feasibility Study, encompassing Ballina, Killala and Enniscrone, launched in September by then Minister Dara Calleary, with some plans already in place. The initiative, also spearheaded by David Mullarkey, with a committed team, will see major developments take place in the coming years and the Lions will push hard to ensure funds are committed for this significant project. The Pride of Place judges summed it all up accurately in their commendation: “Ballina Lions have worked hard, continuously adapting to changing needs, demonstrating energy and enthusiasm and, crucially, have developed trust with the community. They seek at all times to contribute significantly to the betterment of that community.”

The Ballina GOAL Mile has been a tradition for many, many years and an event that many in the community look forward to every Christmas. It affords us an opportunity to come together and do something enjoyable, active and positive to support a good cause – the support of people living in poverty around the world. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, we will be unable to hold the GOAL Mile in 2020 in i’s traditional format where we are all gathered at one location. However, to keep the tradition alive, give everyone a chance to take part and get involved and still raise funds for those in need, the GOAL Mile will go Virtual this year. We are therefore writing to you to ask for your support for the Virtual GOAL Mile through a donation to the Ballina GOAL Mile fundraising page, which you can find here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/marion -mattimoe Your support will be very gratefully received and hugely appreciated. You can also be assured that your donation will have a big impact on delivering critically needed aid in countries like Syria, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Uganda. 98.4% of all income received goes straight to GOAL’S field programmes. You can see more about how your donation will have an impact here: https://youtu.be/qN4HB8ER_mk If you have any queries or would like to confirm the details of your support, you can contact Marian at mmattimoe@gmail.com or on 086 364 4073 (Marion) or 087 97306310 (Catherine).

New Armada book by Manorhamilton native

IT has been described as a brilliant read and a new book by Manorhamilton native Francis Kelly captures the amazing life and career of one of the most enigmatic Captains to have ever served in the Spanish Military. Captain Francisco de Cuellar: The Armada, Ireland, and the Wars of the Spanish monarchy 1578-1606 talks about an officer who served with the ill-fated Spanish Armada that was shipwrecked on the coast of Co Sligo in September 1588. Known to Irish history for the extraordinary account he wrote of his experiences in Ireland, he survived a hurricane-force storm that destroyed his ship and killed most of those on board. A castaway, he found shelter among the Gaelic Irish of the northwest for seven months before he was helped to reach Scotland, and later, the Low Countries. But Captain Cuéllar’s Irish adventure was only one of many in a remarkable military career. Drawing on previously undiscovered documents from Spanish and Belgian archives, this book chronicles, for the first time, Cuéllar’s entire military service – from the earliest evidence of him as a soldier in 1578, to our final glimpse of him in 1606. For almost three decades Cuéllar traversed much of the Spanish Empire and beyond: Spain, Portugal, the Low Countries, Italy, France, the Caribbean, Brazil and Ireland. As a captain he was a member of a cohort of officials whose responsibility it was to recruit, maintain and lead the troops that protected the interests of the Spanish monarchy abroad. He participated in military actions on land and sea, commanding galleons and troops in some of the most celebrated campaigns of the era. Prone to controversy, he had a tendency to clash with superiors, which led to tribunals of inquiry and courtsmartial. Besides an in-depth reassessment of his Irish experiences, this study explores the rise and fall of the enigmatic captain in the military profession. The story of Captain Cuéllar’s career encapsulates, in vivid detail, the life of a soldier of the late sixteenth century.

ost people think of polio as long gone. While thankfully, with every child now vaccinated, this debilitating disease is eradicated in Ireland, however it is thought that around 7,000 people who had polio are still living with the impact of the original illness. Polio Survivors Ireland is urging polio survivors throughout the North West of the country to sign up to the Polio Register, to help find out how many are still here and to create strength in numbers. “We are looking for people who contracted polio as babies or young children, to sign up to our National Polio Register, which is currently rolling out in Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Mayo,” says Fran Brennan, CEO, Polio Survivors Ireland. “With more evidence of the need for tailored supports and services for polio survivors, we can advocate and campaign for what is needed now and in the future.” Before it was eradicated in the early 1960s, Polio struck down many people in Ireland. The current pandemic brings back many memories for those who re-

call the widespread fear and panic of their childhood. During the polio epidemics in the 40s and 50s, parents were urged to avoid crowded places and excessive exercise for their children and swimming pools and libraries were closed in an effort to curb this terrible disease that struck mostly babies and children. Of those who contracted the disease, many were partially and some completely paralysed for life. Decades after, many survivors are now experiencing new symptoms, known as Late Effects of Polio or Post-Polio Syndrome, which often require medical advice and treatment. The Polio Register was set up by Polio Survivors Ireland, the only support organisation for survivors in Ireland, to help create a clearer picture of the number of people affected. This will help the charity to advise statutory services of the supports needed for survivors. Anyone who had polio, whether they require support now or not, should register to give a stronger voice to all polio survivors in Ireland.

Bridie McMahon, a polio survivor from Mayo, believes the Register is essential to help ensure that survivors get the right support. “Polio survivors have lived through epidemics and we’re now aging,” she says. “Thankfully we’ve survived polio but we now have to deal with the late effects of it. The needs don’t go away, we require continued support, in fact the needs can increase as we get older. Although we survived polio, because of the late effects, we still have to deal with other health problems caused by it. It is a great idea for all survivors to sign the register because even if someone doesn’t feel they need help now, at some point if they do, at least they can turn to Polio Survivors Ireland.” Late Effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome can cause previously active survivors to lose mobility and to struggle with daily tasks, fatigue, pain, or to develop an extreme intolerance to cold. To sign up to the register, see www.polio.ie or contact Polio Survivors Ireland on 01 889 8920, email info@ppsg.ie.

H

omelessness charity North West Simon Community has issued a fundraising appeal ahead of Christmas in a bid to safeguard their Early Intervention and Prevention of Homelessness and Housing Services. The principal objective of the service is to help households at risk of homelessness to avoid the need to enter emergency accommodation, and the disruption this brings to their lives. North West Simon Community’s housing support staff provide a highly mobile early intervention and preventative service across the three North Western counties of Donegal, Leitrim, and Sligo. The charity also provides long term housing to 33 households in Donegal and Leitrim. In the first six months of 2020, North West Simon Community supported 108 Households (131 adults and 137 children) to either retain their existing home or find a new home. In 2019, it provided similar supports to 155 households in the full year. But the charity says there are many others across the North West of Ireland in need of their support. General Manager Noel Daly said that the economic fallout is putting a lot of people in “very precarious and uncertain situations”. We, live in very uncertain times, and with so many people fearful about their future, the support we receive from the public enables us to make a real difference to people’s lives. This year the Covid-19 pandemic has made an already serious housing crisis even worse. In addition to supporting people in need of emergency accommodation, we are being called on more and more to help the hidden homeless. Families and individuals living with parents, relatives and friends, have never needed a home of their own so badly. Keeping safe while sharing your home with a daughter or son and their family, creates enormous pressure for both families. Supporting a relative or friend with a spare bed or a place on a sofa, brings added pressure to families living in an overcrowded house. You

may want “your guest” to leave the house for a few hours to give your family some normality, but then you worry about who they may meet when they go out. At the same time there is a shortage of new housing in the region and affordable rental properties are especially difficult to find. More and more of these families are turning to North West Simon Community for help to find new accommodation, as the period of restrictions lengthens all the time, but where can they go? Thanks to our kind supporters, we are doing everything we can to support people and keep them in housing, but we are hugely reliant on voluntary donations to maintain these vital services. Noel Daly explained that: “homelessness is one of the few social challenges in the Republic of Ireland where early intervention and prevention is not adequately prioritised. The vast bulk of Government funding for services only becomes available after a household is declared to be homeless by the local authority. Our determination to stop homelessness before it starts, means that North West Simon Community continues to rely on fundraising to pay for up to 70% of our service costs each year”. Our Christmas appeal is more important than ever now as we need to safeguard our services to ensure that we can be there for those in our community, for those who need our help”, Noel said. Bring the Spirit of Christmas to your School, Workplace, or Community this year! Christmas will be a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get involved in festive fundraising activities and support North West Simon Community. If you are in a position to do so, here are a number of ways you can make a real difference! Host A Christmas Jumper Day:- The concept is simple, support the work of North West Simon by hosting a Christmas Jumper Day in your workplace, your school, college lecture

hall, or even on your morning Zoom call! Wrap up warm in your festive woollies and pledge to donate €5 (or more) to North West Simon Community at www.northwestsimon.ie/donate and put “Jumper Day” in comment box

Christmas Voucher Appeal:- By giving the gift of a voucher this Christmas, you could help North West Simon Community to provide practical support to the individuals and families accessing our services at a time of year that can be particularly difficult for them. No amount is too small, and every voucher will be used effectively and transparently to help make a difference to the people we work with. If you are in a position to do so, please donate vouchers for a supermarket, toy shop, local butcher, or even a heat/fuel merchant. You can donate to our website at www.northwestsimon.ie/donate and in the comment box put “Voucher” – we in turn will convert this money to vouchers or you can post to 4 JFK Parade, Sligo

Simon Action Day:- Fri 18th and Sat 19th Dec - Take action this December by donating an hour’s pay or your commute fair, gift your coffee, or by swimming for Simon on New Year’s Day! This Christmas, we are calling on people from across the North West to take part in an action and donate while coming together in a different way as a community to help those who are at risk of homelessness. Donate at www.northwestsimon.ie/donate and put “Simon Action Day” in comment box. North West Simon Community Christmas Appeal letter may have landed at your home, please if you can support the vital work this Christmas in particular. If you would like to support the charity this Christmas, please visit www.northwestsimon.ie or call 071 9147522 to give a gift to North West Simon Community today. You can post your donation also to North West Simon Community 4 JFK Parade, Sligo.

WORKING OUT BUT NOT LOSING WEIGHT? D o you eat well, exercise often, and still feel like you’re not maintaining a healthy weight? Truth is, eating well and exercising often is a very relative and general statement. If we’re honest with ourselves, I’m sure we could admit that we’re all capable of trying a little harder in both areas. Total-body wellness is a lifestyle. Fat loss happens when you ditch the scale, find an activity you enjoy, and start to see food as fuel instead of something to feed your emotions or occupy your time. No matter who you are or what your background is, chances are one of these nine reasons could be why you’re not shedding pounds:

You’re not eating the good stuff If you’re working out but not losing weight, the first place you should be looking is the kitchen. Some people focus all their energy on burning off calories that they don’t take the time to consider what they’re putting in as fuel. A good rule of thumb is to stick to all natural, whole foods. Tip: Look for foods that have the fewest ingredients on the label—if you can’t pronounce it, it’s probably not something you want to be putting in your body. You’re not striking the right balance If you’ve been shunning carbohydrates because you think they’re making you fat, you might want to reconsider. Cutting out an entire macronutrient from your daily diet can make you feel deprived and tempt you to binge. Instead, reach for healthy, complex carbs—think sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, oats, peas, beans, and whole grain bread. Of course, an occasion sweet is fine, but a steady diet of simple carbs, like candy,

soda, sugary sweets, and processed foods with added sugar, won’t help you reach your weight-loss goal. Tip: Go for starchy carbohydrates, which are digested more slowly and release glucose into your bloodstream more slowly.

You’re eating too much If you’ve already cleaned up your diet big time and you’re still not losing weight, it may be that you're simply eating too much. In order to shed pounds your body needs to run a calorie deficit, meaning you need to burn more than you consume. That being said, you shouldn’t have to deprive yourself either. Life is about balance. Don’t become consumed with counting calories or weighing yourself every day. Eat whenever you’re hungry and eat slowly enough so you can stop just before you get full. And don't be afraid to give yourself "healthy" cheats. The moment you start depriving yourself is when you start to feel like you’re missing out on something and you want to binge. Tip: Healthy snacking during the day will keep you from overeatingduring meals. I always carry a few nature Bars in my bag because they're a great snack made with whole foods and have nothing artificial.

You’re doing too much cardio Yes, cardio is a necessary part of your workout routine. It keeps your heart healthy, boosts your metabolism, and gives you a good sweat (you should break one daily). However, only doing cardio—or doing too much of it—can actually add to the problem. Longer cardio sessions, like staying on the elliptical for 90 minutes or going for regular 10-mile runs, can eat away at your lean muscle mass, which is essential for increasing your

metabolism to burn more calories. It causes the body to become more endurance-focused, storing energy as fat to ensure it has plenty of reserve fuel to keep you going for all those miles. Not to mention it dramatically increases your appetite, making you more susceptible to unnecessary snacking or overeating. Tip: guidelines for physical activity suggest that adults do strength training, focusing on all major muscle groups, two or more days a week.

You’re not lifting weights This one goes hand in hand with number 4. I'm not saying you can't or shouldn’t do cardio. If you love to run or bike for reasons other than losing weight, then by all means don’t stop. But if you’re working out but not losing weight and your primary goal is fat loss, there are other forms of exercise that give a much better bang for your buck. The best way to lose weight and

Westport Foot Clinic

Westport, Co. Mayo

Chiropodist: Martin Mc Nally Tel: 087 222 6260

build lean muscle is by doing some form of strength training in addition to your cardio. The more muscle tone your body has, the more fat you'll burn. If you’re not ready to give up your cardio routine just yet, try adding some interval training by performing short bursts of all-out effort mixed into your regular session. These workouts are much more effective at promoting hormones that target stubborn fat. Then, start adding some resistance training to your routine. Tip: Body weight exercises like push-ups, squats, and lunges are a great place to start to help build up to lifting actual weights. You're not working hard enough There's no exact equation to working out and eating healthy—it’s a matter of trial and error, finding out what works specifically for your body. And more time spent in the gym doesn't always equal a more fit person. Unless you’re an athlete, body builder, or a marathoner-intraining, the average person shouldn't be working out more than an hour a day. Your workouts should be intensity-dependent, not timedependent. Keep this fact in mind: the harder you work, the shorter your workout time may need to be. Tip: Maximize time spent at the gym, in fitness class, or in your athome workout routine so you can achieve that coveted afterburn effect, which keeps your metabolism revved for 24-48 hours afterward.

You’re not taking time to recover When you do achieve that afterburn and you’re really feeling your workout the next day, those are the days to focus on different muscle groups. Or, if you prefer to work out your whole body, establish a workout routine where you work your entire body one day and then take the next day to do light cardio, stretching, or complete rest. Recovery and rest are often more important than the workout itself. It’s during those periods that your body does most of the actual fat

burning. Tip: Give yourself time to fully recover so you’re ready to work hard the following day. Most importantly, listen to your body. Push yourself, but also give it some love, too.

Your body is under too much stress Exercise is a stressor on your body. When you have a healthy balance of exercise-related stress and recovery time, your body is healthy and can lose its excess fat. However, not giving your body enough time to recover can also be a negative (see above) as you'll start to produce an excessive amount of cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol is both normal and important when working out; it’s involved in processes that give your muscles the energy needed to get moving. But when your body is exposed to cortisol for longer periods of time, it starts to cause negative effects, like stubborn fat in areas you don’t want. Exercise isn’t the only stressor that can produce excess cortisol. A stressful personal or professional life can also make your body produce too much of this hormone. When you stop exercising, your body stops producing cortisol; however, it may not be quite as easy to turn off the mental stressors going on in your life. Tip: Make sure you’re keeping your mental and emotional health in check in addition to your physical health. You should strive for totalbody wellness.

You’ve plateaued You’re exercising regularly and eating healthfully, but now the numbers on the scale won’t budge; your weight loss has plateaued. There are lots of reasons this can happen, says the Mayo Clinic. If you’re cutting calories, you may experience a rapid drop in weight initially, as your body burns stored glycogen for energy. You might even lose a little muscle along with fat. To rev up your weight loss again, you may need to cut more calories or amp up your physical activity. Tip: Add resistance training to build muscle and burn fat
