Part Time learning Options
W
ith the current recession continuing to affect the jobs market, what better time to take a fresh look at furthering your education? Even if you are secure in your job and feel unthreatened by potential upheaval, there is bound to be an additional skill you could add to your portfolio which would further recession proof your CV. Or how about doing a course out of interest – maybe you’ve always wanted to learn a language, make your own jewellery, paint, or take up yoga. There are endless options out there in terms of part-time education and surely one to suit your needs. Universities, Institutes of Technology, VEC’s, FAS, private college’s and various organisations throughout the country all run part time courses in some shape or form. The first thing to do is to decide if you want to do a course purely for interest
purposes, or to improve your CV and gain a qualification. Part time courses usually run for 6 – 10 weeks and cost in the region of 60 – 120 euro. Don’t despair if you’ve missed the last round, there will usually be other courses on offer again soon, and some organisations run classes all year round. If you are looking for a course to improve your skills or develop your career, there are also plenty of alternatives. Most Universities and Institutes of Technology offer adult and continuing education courses from Certificate to Degree and Post Graduate Level. In addition there are numerous private colleges throughout the country offering courses in anything from law to counselling to computing. Modes of study and attendance will vary, depending on the college but most are designed to accommodate people in full-time employment and usually offer evening or week-end classes. If you don’t want to attend at all then another option is online or distance learning. Check out Kilroys College or CMIT to name just a few. It’s all about second chance education these days, so most colleges are flexible in terms of meeting part-time student needs. To that end many courses are offered on a credit
basis, which means you get a certain amount of ‘points’ for each section or module of a course you complete. With this method of learning you can progress at your own pace, and work towards your qualification bit by bit. This option is often known as the ACCS mode (Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects) and allows students to study a portion of a full-time programme in a part-time mode. Another study mode worth noting is the APL mode (Accreditation of Prior Learning) which is a method of assessing a person’s prior learning in relation to particular modules in a course. Basically a college will look at what you have already done in previous studies or through work experience, and decide if you are eligible for credits or exemptions on the course you want to study. Chances are that no matter what and how you want to study, there will be a college willing to accommodate you. There are a cou-
ple of things worth bearing in mind though: Firstly, part-time education costs money – an ECDL for example costs around €500 while a degree on average may cost you much more. In general there is no state funding or grants available for part-time education, though college fees are tax deductable. If you are hesitant at the idea of paying full fees, consider it as an investment in your future. Also, shop around for options - some colleges for example offer courses which are part funded by FAS.Secondly if you are looking for a course to improve your career options, make sure the qualification you receive upon completion is nationally recognised. Unfortunately there are many courses and qualifications out there which are only recognised by the college offering them. If you are going to invest good money in part-time education it is always a good idea to ask who accredits the course.

Professional Development Minding Your Business
P
rofessional development means increasing knowledge or skill in a person's professional field, this can be done either through several methods including training courses. One can enhance their professional career by undertaking a professional development session through study, travel, research, workshops or courses, sabbaticals, internships, apprenticeships, residencies or work with a mentor or master. Generally, a person initiates a professional develop-
ment course to build up his expertise, augment personal growth, improve teaching abilities and contribute to organizational development. Professional development can either be generic in nature, or can be more skilloriented. Generic professional development nurtures generic skills through general personal coaching. Skilled development involves developing one's ability in their current profession, like leadership training for managers. Professional development
courses are not just relevant for people in the field of business management, but are equally important for other professionals like teachers, medical practitioners, engineers and technicians. Some professions also associate accreditation with these courses, and use it as a yardstick to measure a person's competence in their career. One can achieve professional development through vocational education as well, which prepares learners for careers that are traditionally non-academic and are directly related to a specific trade. Some enroll for shortterm courses or skill-specific courses for enhancing their expertise. For example, a teacher who wants to develop his oration skills could choose a course in improving communication skills. Professionspecific seminars and workshops also provide insightful information on developing one's career. People with technical backgrounds can take up research-based work or apprenticeships under a mentor to learn the tricks of the trade.
I
f you are involved or planning to get involved in running your own business it is a very good idea to find out as much as you possibly can about all aspects of finance and marketing, Business management and accounting courses can go a long way to ensuring that your finances stay in order. Part time business management courses can be found at various institutions up and down the country so they are accessible for every budding business person, regardless of age and business idea. They are usually independent standalone courses that are not incorporated into degree or diploma courses. This makes it far easier for people to enrol and offers those wanting to go into industry the help they largely need. They are usually short courses that last for anywhere up to ten weeks so they should not take too much of your time away from getting your business up and running. However, some colleges hold these courses infrequently so it would be
best to have to look out for them in your area. There are also longer courses that are available at larger colleges and they focus on all aspects of going into business, not just finance and accounting. If you want a better idea of how to set up and run a successful business then this might be a better option for you. Most part time business management courses cover the same topics. You will cover all aspects of getting paid, recording transactions, maintaining accounts, profit and loss calculations,
tax issues,VAT registration and maintenance, borrowing and saving, bank charges and reconciliation and managing your business in terms of budgeting, pricing and overheads. Business management courses can really help to advance your business's progress. The information that you will take away from this course is invaluable and can help you to get your business off the ground, as well as avoid financing problems later, especially in terms of tax. If you are going for a more sustained qualification then it is likely that you will learn how to use the technology involved as well.

College Funding Options Undergraduate and Postgraduate
P
aying for a University Education can be expensive and overwhelming, but there are options, and not just bank loans and part-time jobs. There are many scholarships, grants, and bursaries available based on, among other things, where you live, clubs you’re a member of, your subject of study, and your own personal background. Undergraduate tuition fees start at about €4100 upwards, with professional programmes such as law and medicine costing more. Most colleges have extra charges such as sports centre fees and an annual student services charge or registration fee, which covers student services and examinations. In September 2011 the Student Services Charge will be replaced by a flat-rate student contribution of €2,000 per year. For postgraduate study, there is more variation among the different universities’ fees. Fees for research degrees average more than €4,000, while fees for taught degree programmes can be under €4,000 or as high as €10,000. The charge for an MBA (Masters of Business Administration) course can be as high as €25,000.The cost of tuition alone can be off putting, and there is also additional living costs, but try not to let this deter you. There are many funding opportunities for furthering your education offered by government agencies, the colleges themselves, and private organisations. Some potential students may qualify to have their Undergraduate course fees covered by the state. In order to qualify for free fees the course must be full-time and of at least two years' duration (or certain one year courses in an institute of technology). You can’t already hold an equivalent qualification and you can’t be repeating the year because of previously failing your exams. You must be an EU national, have immigrant status, or meet residency requirements. There is no separate application for the Free Fees Initiative,
rather eligibility is assessed based on the information you give when applying for a college place. If you do not qualify for free fees, you may still qualify for full or partial payment of fees if you satisfy the conditions of the Higher Education Grants Scheme. The Higher Education Authority (HEA) Grants Scheme and the Vocational Education Committees' (VEC) Scholarship Scheme’ are two types of means-tested maintenance grants offered by the Irish government and administered through County Councils. Conditions for application can be found on the Department of Education and Skills website (www.education.ie). Official application forms are available from the local authority or www.studentfinance.ie. While the HEA Grants Scheme is intended for
students starting courses, the VEC Scholarship Scheme is geared towards students who have completed two years of a Level 7 (Ordinary Bachelor Degree or National Diploma) course and so have gained admission into year two of a Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degree) course. In searching for funding, you’ll encounter the terms fellowship, scholarship, and bursaries. The terms are often used interchangeably. General scholarships and bursaries are offered and may be given to students who will attend school full time, have a minimum average grade of at least a B average, and who can demonstrate financial need, but there are many opportunities available to specific groups depending on what you’re studying, where you live, membership in banks or sports clubs, or background. There are usually more opportunities to acquire funding when the subject studied is in demand. Most of the sciences, in particular maths and engineering have some funding at postgraduate level via private industry. For example,The Science Foundation Ireland/DELL Scholarship provides funding for female engineering students. The INTEL, Shannon Women in Technology Scholarship is open to first or second year female undergraduates planning to study computer science. The Irish Taxation Institute Third Level Scholarship Programme is for those interested in a career in taxation. Area-based Scholarships, besides the HEA grants, include those sometimes offered by city or county coun-
cils, sports organisations, or private industry that provide funding opportunities for area residents. Some Credit Unions award a number of education grants or bursaries in their catchment areas for students studying at all levels of higher education. For example, the Cathedral Credit Union in Cork offers a €3,000 Bursary Award to a members entering full-time third level education for the first time. Sports groups such as various Rugby and GAA clubs offer competitive educational bursaries to members. Bothscholarships and bursaries are often targeted to specific groups: single parents, disabled students, or the specific research goals as a student. For students from disadvantaged backgrounds there are several scholarships including the All Ireland Scholarship Scheme that provides third-level education scholarships to top-performing Leaving Certificate students. The Donogh O’Malley Scholarship Scheme offers a minimum of three scholarships in each of the following regions: Dublin City and County, Rest of Leinster, Munster, Connacht/Ulster, with additional awards to be provided in the areas with greater numbers of eligible students. Fellowships are usually based on skill, GPA, and qualifications to work in a certain field, as opposed to need. Often Fellowships are payment for some type of work, such as internships, fieldwork, or teaching at the college level, while obtaining a master’s degree or PhD. They are intended to enhance the student’s training and support the student so they may focus on their study without needing additional income. Fellowships range from around €10,000 to over €20,000. Again subject areas that are in need of graduates receive most Fellowship funding; Science Foundation Ireland offers fellowships in many areas of science including biomedical research, botany, and chemistry. The Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences holds an annual competition for students entering postgraduate study and in their first few years. Colleges’ often provide funding themselves, the faculty, and departmental websites will detail the bursaries and prizes on offer. In addition check each school’s Graduate

The National University of Ireland (consisting of UCD, UCC, NUI Galway and NUI Maynooth, and a number of other colleges) administers a number of postgraduate prizes and scholarships. Visit www.nui.ie or the specific member College website for details. In addition the websites for each Institute of Technology, DCU, University of Limerick, and Trinity College all list specific prizes, bursaries, scholarships, and Fellowships on offer. For a list of scholarships and fellowships both in Ireland and abroad, see http://www.scholarships-links.com/ The Erasmus programme allows registered undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply for financial support to enable them to spend periods from three to twelve months studying or working in another participating country. The eligible countries are all member states of the EU as well as Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Turkey. Funding agencies do encourage education as an investment for the community and the future, and people who have the ambition and ability should be encouraged and supported, so if you do require funding for your education dont hesitate to try the options outlined above. Your local county council will probably be the best place to start or individual colleges will usually be very helpfult to prospective students.

Childcare Courses: Taking Care Of The Future
C
hild care professionals have an incredibly important job – nurturing children and looking after their safety and wellbeing. As such it is important that people this direction are well prepared and receive adequate training.
The majority of childcare training courses available similar core topics, these include child development, early childhood education and communication. These days IT training is also included to a certain extent. This may only be simple computer skills, but a basic knowledge is required in order to operate some computer based learning systems that some childcare groups and companies employ. Childcare Courses Ireland Childcare courses, regardless of the nature of the content and the manner of teaching employed at the various col-
leges, can be quite comprehensive these days. There are certain laws and guidelines that everyone in this profession has to adhere to, and as a result these form an important part of any course. Modules on caring for children, appropriate behaviour, occupational first aid and a general introduction to working in childcare are all necessary and any good course will include them. The other essential element of any good childcare course is work experience. Whether the course itself lasts one, two or three years, there should be an element of work experience to introduce you to the unpredictable world of work! This is most definitely the fun element! The length of the placement all depends on the individual col-
lege & the length of the course. Some placements may last just weeks, whereas others will require you to send an entire year working. This information will be available to you before you enrol on the course and the experience you would like can often determine which course you go for! In terms of the career prospects on offer for individuals looking to complete a childcare course, there are a wide range of options. Some people choose to go on to teaching, others become a nanny in a private home or work in a day care centre. There would also be options to work with disabled or disadvantaged children which can be an extremely rewarding career choice for suitable candidates.

Get Creative with Crafts and Hobby Courses
CRAFTS and hobby courses were once seen as a way for people of the older generations to pass the time. People who may have wanted to improve their social life and wanted to meet a few like minded people once a week. The skill did not matter but the social club that the course morphed into did. Times have changed and this is no longer the case although the social aspect does of course come hand in hand with it. A lot of people now go to crafts courses to learn a new skill for their own personal development. There are plenty of these courses around that allow for any number of skills to be learned. Crafts and hobby courses are usually held at local colleges and may be ei-
ther a day or night course. There are usually several time slots to cater for different lifestyles so that you have a variety to choose from. The course range offered is usually diverse and may include cake decorating, creative writing, knitting, crocheting, the basics of drama, sewing, dressmaking, painting, sculpting, sketching, English literature, flower arranging and a whole host of others. Some courses are relatively obscure, but the majority teach popular skills that come in handy in everyday life. These skills may not be career oriented, but they are extremely useful and can be integral in ensuring an individual's personal development! Crafts and hobby courses are excellent space fillers for individuals that have a hectic schedule because they are often only on once or twice a week. The majority of courses last between one and two hours, usually depending on whether they are scheduled on one or two days of the week, but very few last longer than that. Some may even be over the course of a weekend. The length of the courses varies from college to college. Some may last six weeks, others may last twenty to thirty weeks. The shorter courses do not tend to give a qualification at the end, whereas the long courses may give a National Certificate or similar. The course itself will obviously have a set
curriculum, but each one will often deal with a different area of the art or craft every week. There may be examinations at the end of the course, but that is unlikely because arts and crafts courses usually only have a practical exam, if indeed they have one at all. In terms of advancing a person's career, crafts and hobby courses are generally taken for pleasure but they can lead to a passion that sparks a future business idea. There are businesses that were born out of a short course at a local college so the idea that they are just for fun and otherwise useless is often far from accurate. Many individuals use them to enhance their existing careers because a hobby or crafts course can act as a stress reliever and may lead to a person doing better at work as a result.

Learning Another Language
I
f it’s opportunity you’re looking for, if you want to shake up how you see the world, or even just see more of it, then maybe it’s time to learn another language. There is no doubt acquiring a second or third language can be challenging, but there are huge benefits for work, pleasure, and health reasons. Career opportunities skyrocket when you have another language. In these tough economic times people need to make their CVs unique and significant. Multi-lingual employees are more bang for their buck for their employers, and many companies reward staff who use the additional languages in their career with higher salaries. Irish companies need people with second languages to create and maintain business in and with foreign-speaking countries. European languages such as German, French, or Spanish are in huge demand as the economy in Continental Europe improves, and as both Africa and South America become more open to foreign business. Meanwhile foreign companies need employees who speak their language as well as English to help expand their businesses into Ireland and other English-speaking countries. Not only are the European languages in demand, but so are Mandarin, Hindi, Russian, Japanese, and Arabic. Irish employees with second languages are in particular demand as Ireland has a strong positive image abroad that people are aware of and can relate to. The demand for Multi-lingual Irish employees has never been higher.
french, spanish, german and other languages courses in Dublin and Ireland Of course second languages aren’t just for work. Knowing the language of the country you are travelling in can make your holiday much easier to enjoy, and connects people in a social and cultural way. By speaking the local language you are more likely to be treated better because the locals see that you’ve made an effort to learn their language. This makes a difference in the way you see the world and other people. When
learning a foreign language you also gain insight into the culture and character of a people. In a sense, language can be considered as the verbal expression of culture. But it’s not all just work and play, learning another language is good for you and has been shown to improve memory and cognitive skills. Often when learning a second language many people discover they start paying more attention to English grammar and expand their vocabulary.
Adult Learning; A second chance
S
HORT courses at night schools, vocational courses designed to give people a trade or enhance existing skills and attending university courses on a full or part time basis are all forms of adult learning. Adult learning courses usually last between eight weeks and nine months, depending on the nature of the course and the content. For example, a skills course to enhance administration skills will probably last longer than one covering cake decoration. Adult learning courses usually require an individual to attend two to three times a week for one or two hour classes. Adult Learning, further education The classes can be scheduled at any time of day but are most commonly run as evening courses to help people to arrange them around their working patterns or their other commitments, such as caring for children. There may also be two versions of the
same course running simultaneously, one in the day and one in the evening, to give more flexibility & cater for a those with differing schedules. In terms of the course content to be found on adult learning schemes, it varies in relation to the course itself, but the majority of the work and assessment is classroom based with a practical exam or regular exam at the end of the course. However, the typical course content for adult learning varies depending on area of study. In terms of career progression, adult learning courses can considerably enhance your career prospects. A good number of the courses are designed to introduce you to new skills related to your existing career or enhance those that you already have. The ones that can supplement your existing knowledge can enhance your employability for future jobs elsewhere or indeed enhance your position within the company, thus making your promotion prospects more real.

Secretarial Courses
T
he key skills necessary when it comes to landing a secretarial position are arguably not complex, but mastery of them is essential if you want to go far. An entry level position might require you to be good with computers (expect to have your typing speed and knowledge of basic computer programs examined extensively at interview), as well as strong people skills - if you’re enthusiastic smaller companies might allow you to train on the job. Getting certified, of course, is always going to give you a better chance of landing
a position with more pay and more responsibility. How far it’s worth you going in order to attain these skills depends entirely on your aims. It’s worth remembering that even those with a high level diploma in secretarial work are unlikely to be taken on by major firms without at least one to two years work experience, so combining work and study could be a sensible option for more than just financial reasons. If you’re looking to enter at the bottom, qualifications like the European Computer Driving License will get your foot in
the door, as will learning to type correctly. Picking up some skills in data entry and even languages can be a big help, too. Of course, the best way to really get yourself noticed is to pick an industry and specialize. There’s barely an industry that doesn’t have some requirement for secretaries, and with a little effort you could find yourself anywhere from manning the desk at Universal to working in a top accounting firm, writing letters to investors about the transfer of millions of Euro. The key specializations – and the key to increased salaries – revolve around the most specific and demanding of professions. Legal secretarial work is competitive, but the staff are in demand and paid substantially more than standard positions. You will need to learn all about confidentiality in particular, and later specializations in subjects such as criminal law, litigation, family law, civil law, probate, business law and intellectual property is almost as desired as the lawyers themselves. Secretaries in these areas can go on to become legal executives, as well as earning substantial salaries in their own rights at major law firms. There’s not as much financial reward in medical secretarial work, though it is arguably more satisfying in other ways. Medical secre-
taries skills are extremely specialist, and aimed at helping doctors to perform their jobs. You’ll be dealing with some difficult situations (is there ever a time when people are more emotional?), and can also be involved in things like the completion of insurance forms. You’ll need to have a good grasp of what’s going on around you, which in this particular work place is easier said than done. Many medical secretaries are highly skilled, specifically trained and eager to give something back. Un-
less you’ve undertaken an extensive course, this is certainly not an entry-level position, nor a specialty to be taken lightly. The range of options, salaries and required qualifications for different secretarial positions is enormous, and while you’re never going to out-earn the CEO, you might become an essential part of his team, privy to the companies most important deals and paid appropriately. In other words, it’s a role well worth considering.

LIGO College of Further Education (SCFE) - The North West’s largest provider of Further Education opportunities At this time of gloom and doom it is gratifying to witness the continued success and development of Sligo College of Further Education. Over the past four years numbers have increased fivefold, millions have been invested in facilities and the range and diversity of courses is changing and increasing every year to meet the needs of students throughout the region and beyond. Mr Joe Carolan, Principal of the College is not surprised at these developments. He attributes the success of the College to a number of factors including the dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm of his staff, the huge ongoing investment in facilities, its
links and proximity to Sligo Institute of Technology and its capacity to respond to the needs of industry and Higher Education Institutions throughout Ireland and abroad. SCFE now offers over twenty different courses in areas as diverse as Social Studies, Nursing, Childcare, Business,Tourism, Design, Art, Hairdressing and Beauty, Complementary Therapies, Science, Engineering, Veterinary, Horticulture, Services and Media Studies. All our courses offer students of all ages an alternative route into Third Level education and opportunities to acquire new skills for direct entry into employment. In one year students can attain up to 400 points which can then be used to access many third level courses though the Central Applications Office.

Students without Leaving Certificate mathematics will be offered the option of studying a PLC mathematics module to fulfil the entry requirements for Third Level Colleges. Continuous assessment by means of assignments and project work is a feature of all courses. This reduces the stress and pressure associated with a single terminal examination and ensures that students who work consistently throughout the year are rewarded. The Department of Education and Skills has invested over €3 million in the college in the past three years and Sligo College of Further Education now has facilities that rank among the very best in the country. A large new extension has been added. The College also has a number of new lecture theatres, a fully equipped Hairdressing Salon, a Beauty
and Complementary Therapies facility and an Animal Grooming room. In addition the College now has six modern computer suites encompassing state of the art technology and can now offer students full catering facilities in its recently refurbished canteen. SCFE is expected to again significantly increase numbers this September and maintain its position as the dominant Further Education College in the Northwest. In these difficult times it is gratifying to see the tremendous strides that Sligo College of Further Education has made over the past few years. It is now recognised as the Regional Further Education College for the North West. The College has first class facilities, highly experienced and dedicated staff and is now in a position to continue to play a pivotal role in the continued development of Further Education for counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo and beyond.
