regionalnews Public need to be wary of ‘rogue’ taxi drivers during race week GARDAI and the Taxi Regulator are set to crack down on ‘rogue’ taxis operating in Galway during the races, when hundreds of unlicensed drivers are expected to descend on the city. Last year, the National Taxi Drivers’ Union said around 300 unlicensed taxes were touting for business in the city during Race Week. Galway West Deputy Noel Grealish has called on the Taxi Regulator and the Gardaí to carry out checkpoints throughout the city next week and has urged members of the public to be on the lookout for rogue taxi drivers. He added that he has contacted the Taxi Regulator and the chief Superintendent asking that they put a

proper system in place to prevent rogue taxi drivers from taking fares from unsuspecting members of the public. All legitimate taxi drivers should have a license clearly displayed on their dashboard, should be able to provide you with a receipt and should have a proper meter. Customers should always check for these items before getting in a taxi, passengers who choose to travel in an unlicensed taxi will not be insured in the event of an accident. Customers need to be vigilant for their own safety and to protect the livelihoods of Galway taxi drivers, and this applies any time they use a taxi, not just this weekend.

Mohill house latest in spate of robberies

Newstalk’s Sean Moncrieff Movies and booze tour comes to Sligo

A house near the town of Mohill in Leitrim was recently raided by thieves in the latest burglary to hit the area. The burglars forced their way into the unoccupied rural property via a patio door sometime between 9am and 6pm on Wesdnesday July 20.They scoured the entire house and made off with a number of household items. Gardai are appealing for anyone in the Mohill area who may have noticed anything suspicious to get in contact with them. They are also renewing calls for people to report anything unusual in their locality immediately to their local gardai. A spokesperson for local gardai said reporting anything, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to gardai, may prove vital in apprehending the culprits of these crimes.Whether you notice a strange car in the area or see people approaching a property you know is unoccupied, take all relevant details and report this immediately to gardai. If you are going away on holidays ensure you let family and neighbours know so that they can keep an eye on your property for you and also inform the local gardai so they are aware the house is unoccupied. Gardai are also appealing for council road workers, Eircom employees, postmen and others who are regularly on the roads around the county, to be especially vigilant and to report anything unusual.

Restaurants and cafes not passing on reduced VAT rate savings to customers

MANY restaurants and cafés around the Northwest and the rest of the country are failing to pass on the government VAT reduction to customers, according to an informal survey. Out of 151 outlets examined, just 16 had reduced their prices, or just over ten per cent. The checks were carried out by the office of Fine Gael Senator Catherine Noone a day after the VAT rate was cut on July 1, the Sunday Times recently reported.

Some 38 businesses would not even discuss the subject. Meanwhile, a separate poll carried out by the newspaper revealed that outlets operated by ten well-known café chains have not passed on the price cut. Stores run by Café Sol, Butlers, Costa Coffee and O’Briens were among the offenders. The VAT reduction was introduced in an attempt to boost domestic and tourism demand for goods and services. The measure saw sales tax cut from 13.5 per cent to nine per cent on eateries, hotels, cinemas and many printed publications at a cost of !120million to the taxpayer. At the time when this was announced restaurant and hotel owners were urged to pass these savings on Tto their customers, many businesses have done so but unfortunately this has not been the case in all businesses. One marketing company has launched a Facebook page and are urging restaurants and other businesses who are passing on savings to their customers to copy their logo “We are Passing on the VAT Reduction” and display it on their menus and premises.

Enniscrone Beach, Sligo Liam Doran, general secretary of the INMO sent the letter to Health Minister Dr. James Reilly

NURSES have written to the Health Minister, Dr James Reilly, to ensure him that nursing care at Roscommon"County Hospital has always been of the highest standard. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) took the decision to put its comments 'on formal record', following recent public comments, including some from statutory organisations, that Roscommon Hospital is 'unsafe'. The letter from Liam Doran, general secretary of the INMO, insists that nursing staff at the hospital have always 'engaged in safe practice and delivered safe care to all of their patients'. He said that recent comments that the hospital is 'unsafe' are 'grossly misleading and totally unfair'. "Despite the absence of the required re-

sources over many years, the staff in Roscommon have, at all times,"endeavoured to meet the needs of their patients in a manner which reflects best practice with the shared objective of returning the patient to health as quickly as possible," Mr Doran wrote. He said that the recent comments about the hospital had severely damaged nurses' morale and called on Minister Reilly to 'publicly ackowledge the excellence of the care that is given and the expertise and competance of the nursing staff' working at the hospital. "Your attention to this matter would be appreciated and is richly deserved by the staff in Roscommon Hospital," Mr Doran added.

IT Sligo’s Imagine Cup Winners afforded Civic Reception in Sligo

Team Hermes, James McNamara, Aíne Conaghan, Callum Cawley and Matthew Padden winners of the Microsoft Imagine Cup, with Senator Marc MacSharry at a Civic Reception at City Hall, Sligo, on Monday. Photo: James Connolly / PicSell8

THE Mayor of Sligo, Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady, last Monday honoured the IT Sligo students who took first place in the world finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup with a civic reception in Sligo. Political representatives, business leaders, representatives from Microsoft Ireland, members of the IT Sligo community, and the families and friends of the victorious students gathered in the Town Hall to mark

their victory in the world’s leading student technology competition. The team - Aíne Conaghan, a Fáilte Ireland Scholarship postgraduate research student from Ballybofey, Donegal; James McNamara, a student in the Department of Information Systems from Ballyfarnon, Co Roscommon; Calum Cawley, a mechatronic student from Castlebaldwin, Co Sligo; and Matthew Padden from Ballina, Co Mayo, a postgraduate research

student in the Department of Information Systems – returned from the USA the day before. Speaking at the reception, Mayor O’Grady commended the students for their achievement; “Team Hermes’ success is a testament to the enterprise and ingenuity of the team members,” she said. “It also reflects great credit on the management and staff of IT Sligo, whose proven commitment to the highest standards in information technology and innovation is now very publicly acknowledged.” President of IT Sligo Professor Terri Scott said that, fighting off competition from 70 countries worldwide, the students have placed IT Sligo and Ireland in a very positive position on a global stage; “This victory is one that everyone in Ireland can be proud of as it demonstrates our ability to compete successfully on a global stage. The win also showcases the creativity and technical skills of our students that are key to Ireland’s economic recovery. This is an exciting and timely profile boost for IT Sligo and the North West of Ireland.” The winning project designed by the students includes a device that plugs into a car and monitors dangerous driving behavior and road conditions, providing instant feedback to both the driver and the car owner. With its victory, the team won $25,000 (U.S.) and the opportunity to benefit from further Microsoft funding and support.

Sligo town’s biggest retailers battle it out over planning TWO of Sligo’s biggest retailers, Tesco and Penneys are going head to head in a planning bat-

tle over Penney’s proposals to build a new store in Sligo. Tesco and Penneys are lo-

cated just yards from one another in the centre of town but Tesco Sligo is not happy with the Borough Council’s decision to grant Penny’s permission to build a new store. An appeal has been lodged by Tesco against the Penneys plan with eleven grounds of opposition. These include claims that the Penneys plan poses a risk to jobs at Tesco and there is also a suggestion that in light of the current economic climate, a new master plan for the car park needed to be drawn up with input from town centre landowners and stakeholders.

"The proposed development will have a major negative impact on the retailers and service providers in the Wine Street Car Park area," say Tesco. Tesco also added that the loss of visibility of their store from the car park, combined with the loss of parking spaces, would have a significant knockon effect on the efficient operation and viability of the store thereby jeopardising the existing 130 jobs there. The deadline for appeals was July 6th last and a decision by An Bord Pleanala will issue in due course.

vealed that Amy Winehouse didn’t lead such an idyllic life as so many associate with superstars. Within months Amy was married to Blake despite concerns from her family about the basis of their relationship. And pictures published in August 2007 confirmed their fears as Amy and Blake appeared bloodied and bruised, in the streets of London after an alleged fight, although she contended her injuries were self-inflicted. Regardless of whether they were or not both were extremely disconcerting claims-either pop’s most loved star was suffering domestic violence or had reverted to harming herself. This prompted concerns from Amy’s family as to whether the pair were planning to implement a suicide pact. Blake has admitted he introduced Amy to what were become her cause of death-crack cocaine and heroin. Unlike so many celebrities Amy Winehouse didn’t attempt to hide her addiction from the publicshe openly admitted she struggled with eating disorders, depression and addiction. How had things gone so wrong for this talented star? Winehouse’s admission that her and Fielder-Civils "whole marriage was based on doing drugs" sparked hope that as she left her husband she may be attempting to focus her sights once again on the positive-her music. Winehouse fluttered between relationships following her split from Blake and insisted during her brief romance with Josh Bowman she felt "in love again, and I don't need drugs." However, even from the outset it was obvious that Amy Winehouse was struggling. Her spells in rehab became more frequent with only last week photographs been released of the frail star slugging back vodka as she prepared to attend rehab once again. Her once trademark bee-hive hair appeared lank and greasy the sparkle in her eyes absent. Amy Winehouse had sacrificed the thrill of hearing her song reach number1 in the charts to thinking only of her next fix. She will be remembered as a legendary singer, a stunning model but sadly she must also be remembered as the talented young woman who took her own life in a haze of drugs. Amy Winehouse was no angel and it is essential that we, as celebrity followers, recognise that unlike the poor people of Somalia or the innocent victims in Norway she chose the path that would ultimately lead to her death.

Law Commission urges medical consent for teenagers

Mayo Teleflorist

Email: tracysfloristwestport@gmail.com

Telephone: 09842758 Mobile: 0876472461 Expert says Irish should tax junk food

THE Law Reform Commission has recommended that 16 and 17 year olds should be presumed old enough to consent to and refuse medical treatment, including surgery, contraception and mental health services. A new report from the Commission makes over 20 recommendations aimed at clarifying existing law for 16 and 17 year olds and ensuring that young people under-16 have their views taken into account when they seek medical treatment. The Commission added that where any person under 18 years refuses life-sustaining treatment, an application to the High Court

would be required to decide on the validity of such a refusal. It says mature minors, those under 16, should not be presumed competent to consent to, or refuse, medical treatment. However, in exceptional circumstances they may do so based on an assessment of their maturity and a presumption their parents or guardians will be involved. It also calls for the Mental Health Act 2001 to be amended to provide for the review of the admission and treatment of people under-18 to be carried out by a Mental Health Tribunal, rather than the district court.

JUNK food should be taxed by the Government to tackle Ireland’s obesity crisis, says Dr Francis Finucane, consultant endocrinologist at University Hospital Galway. He has warned that if society does not act soon to curb the obesity problem, future generations will wonder why we

didn’t do something sooner. “Perhaps if we saw obesity as a burden borne by certain individuals within an irresponsible, disinterested and blinkered society, we would instigate effective strategies to reverse it”, he said recently in a medical journal. “Public health strategies have focused on telling people to exercise more and eat healthily. This is equivalent to trying to persuade a laboratory rat to eat less cheese,” he added. He argued that to modify behaviour on a population level to deal with obesity, the level of accessibility

to junk food needs to be altered. He urged that junk food be made harder to obtain through taxing it accordingly. Dr Finucane’s views were echoed by a Dublin surgeon in the same journal. Ireland has a poor public health strategy and an out of control food and drinks industry said Mr Robert Stuart, bariatric surgeon in the Beacon Hospital, Dublin, who said that the weakness of politicians in this area 'should not result in the medicalisation of obesity', meaning that that it should not be defined and treated as a medical problem or a ‘disease’.

A new interactive map has been launched showing crime rates across Ireland and shows that some areas in the Northwest have the lowest level of crime. The map uses data from local Garda stations and will allow members of the public to access detailed crime statistics for their area. The data is taken from a study of crime rates from 20042010 and reveals that, contrary to popular opinion, crime has actually decreased since 2007. The greater Dublin region, Cork, Limerick and north Donegal have the highest level of crime, while Mayo and west Galway have the lowest. "Nearly every community has experienced a significant and sustained decline in crime since 2007," Said Dr Perry Share, a sociologist at Sligo Institute of Technology, who was involved in the study.

Dr Share also said that while "parts of the media give the impression that drug use is rapidly rising across Ireland" the study shows that, although there was a gradual increase in drug use from 2004, the rate has actually declined since 2007, and that the vast majority of drug offences are still limited to particular urban areas. The interactive map is now available on www.airo.ie. However, access may initially be limited if the UK experience is anything to go by. When a similar map was launched there two years ago, demand was so great the site crashed on the first day.

GLOBAL WINNERS OF THE MICROSOFT IMAGINE CUP BEGIN HOME COMING CELEBRATIONS Team Hermes from IT Sligo was warmly welcomed by family and friends in Dublin airport this morning. Students and supporters began celebrating their global victory in the Software Design competition having competed against over 350,000 global registrants and more than 400 students from all over the world in New York last week. The team designed a device that plugs into a car and monitors dangerous driving behavior and road conditions, providing instant feedback to both the driver and the car owner. The team’s solution uses embedded technology, Windows Phone 7, Bing Maps and the Windows Azure cloud computing platform to change driving habits and reduce road deaths, which impact a significant number of young lives each year. With its victory, the team won $25,000 (U.S.).

T

HE O Carolan Harp and Traditional Music Festival has been held in Keadue since 1978 and was initiated to commemorate Turlough O Carolan ( 1670-1738 ) , the last of the Irish Bards. His remains are interred at Kilronan Cemetery which overlooks scenic Lough Meelagh on the outskirts of the village. In 1993 the O'Carolan Park was officially opened and a specially commissioned sculpture modelled on O'Carolan's Harp unveiled as its centrepiece .The Festival has de-

veloped into an international celebration of the harp - alongside the tradition of our world renowned music, song and dance. Other highlights throughout the festival include ceilis, concerts, lectures and a door dancing competition. This last event is a sample of the entertainment enjoyed in country house dances in years gone by. We are delighted to have hosted many of the most prestigious exponents of traditional music in our 30+ years. National and Interna-

tional artists from the Douglas Gunn Ensemble in our first year , through The Chieftains , De Danann , Stocktons Wing , Patrick Street , Altan , Sharon Shannon , Dervish to name but a few. Not to mention those playing in sessions up and down the village - inside and out - mainly in sunshine but sometimes not. Harpists of the highest calibre from around the globe have been drawn to Keadue and to O'Carolan , such is the lure of the music and the gravitas of O Carolan's contribution to

harping. The tradition continues through a new generation of musical talent. The O'Carolan Summer School is held on the week preceding the August Bank Holiday Weekend (first weekend in August each year) The popularity of the event is increasing. There is expert tuition by accomplished, well known music, dance and song tutors each morning - with other opportunities to play in sessions each evening in various venues around the village. Shuttle astronauts repair computer

science news & technology

ÂŁ150k flying car set for skies

THE pilots on Nasa's last space shuttle flight have fixed another one of their main computers after it failed and set off an alarm that shattered their sleep. Nasa declared all five of Atlantis' primary computers to be working, pending evaluation of the latest shutdown. Computer failures like this are extremely rare in orbit, said lead flight director Kwatsi Alibaruho. The two problems appear to be quite different, he noted. The first was caused by a bad switch throw, the second possibly by cosmic radiation. "The fact that we did have two computer failures on a same flight on a spacecraft that's otherwise performing beautifully, that's not at all lost on me," Mr Alibaruho told reporters. "I do have a saying that you're not paranoid if they really are after you, so I am cautiously optimistic that we'll have a healthy data-processing system" for Atlantis' undocking and return to Earth next week, he added. "But we will be watching closely." Atlantis' commander, Christopher Ferguson, said the alarm sounded an hour or so after the four astronauts had gone to bed, during the deepest part of their sleep. The astronauts rushed to the flight deck and switched to a back-up computer. Within a half-hour they were back in bed. The first computer failure occurred just before Sunday's docking by Atlantis to the International Space Station. New software loads took care of both problems, at least for now. The five computers are critical for a space shuttle's return to Earth - so crucial that multiple shutdowns, in certain circumstances, could prompt an early return home. Atlantis is due to make the last landing of the 30-year space shuttle era next Thursday. President Barack Obama made note of the historic journey in a call from the White House to space. He thanked everyone at Nasa and the "thousands who have poured their hearts and souls into America's shuttle programme over the last three decades".

THE age-old dream of owning a car that flies has just got closer to reality for the average driver. The Terrafugia Transition is set to become the world's first flying production car - and it's soaring towards the UK. The Transition has been declared road legal by the NHTSA in the US, paving the way for American buyers to take to the skies. Since then, 20 UK drivers have registered interest in buying one of the road-going planes, which go on sale next year. Over 100 American buyers have already made enquiries. With a price of ÂŁ150,000, the Transition costs ÂŁ20,000 less than today's supercar of the moment, the McLaren MP4-12C. In 'car' mode, it drives just like a normal family hatchback, and has standard safety features like airbags, a front crumple zone and a protective passenger cell. It has a 500-mile tank range and can reach 65mph. It takes around 30 seconds for the wings to fold out, resulting in a 26-foot wingspan. In flight mode, it takes off like a normal light aircraft and will reach 115mph. Certified as a Light Sport Aircraft, owners will need a Sport Pilot licence to fly, which takes 20 hours' flight time to obtain. The car isn't certified for use legally in the UK yet, although with the US having passed it, it's likely that Europe will follow suit. So it could be that the 2015 envisioned in 'Back To The Future Part II' turns out to be true - all we're waiting for now is the hoverboard.

Young 'see explicit content online'

YOUNGSTERS are being exposed to sexually-explicit messages and photos on the internet, according to a new poll. Some 25% of 13 to 15-yearolds have seen sexually explicit im-

ages online while 28% have been sent sexual pictures on a mobile phone. More than one in four (28%) children aged 10 to 12 have read alcohol-related posts on social net-

working sites, while 37% of 13 to 15-year-olds have viewed photos of their friends drunk. Some 13% of 13 to 15-yearolds admit they have come under pressure to drink alcohol.

The poll, of 800 parents and 600 children, was carried out for the industry-funded charity Drinkaware and parenting charity Family Lives. It found 87% of parents thought their children were growing up too quickly, with 86% saying increasing exposure to technology was influencing that. Some 74% believed the issues facing their children were more serious than those they experienced at the same age, with many citing sex, drugs and smoking. But children themselves highlighted other problems, including underage drinking and "sexting" - sending and receiving sexually explicit text messages. Of those children aged 13 to 15 who were surveyed, 31% admitted consuming alcohol while 28% had encountered sexually explicit text messages. This compares to 15% who said they had smoked and 4% who had taken drugs. Of those parents surveyed, 54% had never heard of "sexting".

30k for Kate Middleton's old runabout CROAT WAG Nives Celsius, who had sex with husband Dino Drpic on the pitch after a game, has caused another storm after she was signed to play in a league match. Croatian football league bosses are now trying to find out if it's against the law to have a woman player in the game after local club Slaven Belupo FC said they were planning to include her in their line-up against Zagreb FC in the northern town of Koprivnica. The club's office, unsurprisingly, has reported a great deal of interest for tickets to the game following Nives' inclusion in the squad. The team said she would not start the match, but is expected to appear as a substitute at some point during the 90 minutes. Drpic, who now plays for Greek side AEK Athens, was placed on the transfer-list by Dinamo Zagreb after Celsius' revelations about their extra-time activities on the pitch.

KATE Middleton's ten-year-old Volkswagen Golf is due to be sold on eBay - and could bag a staggering £30,000 for its new owner. Sonny Brazil, 21, got the car from his dad, who owns the Reading-based dealership where Kate Middleton's brother part-exchanged it in 2009. It was only when Sonny looked at the log

book and saw the name of the first registered keeper - a Ms Catherine Middleton - that he realised its provenance. The blue, 1.4-litre Volkswagen Golf is the car Kate Middleton used while studying at St. Andrews University, when she began dating Prince William. It was famously issued two parking tickets: one in 2003, and another in 2007 outside her Chelsea apartment. The car's remarkably complete history shows that it had a wing mirror replaced in 2003 and a headlight fixed in 2006. Bought in 2001 for just over £10,000, the Golf would now be worth around £1,500 without its unique history. Whoever ends up buying it would be able to buy, tax and insure a brand new Golf GTI

for about the same as its estimated price. However, the auction winner will also get a set of silver cufflinks that were left in the car when it was exchanged. Talking to the 'Daily Mail', Sonny Brazil said: 'I'm not quite sure who the cufflinks belong to, they might have been William's or they could have belonged to James. I'll be selling them with the car as well as all the receipts for work done on the car and the log book. "I became quite precious about [the car] and wouldn't let anyone else drive it, even parking it in a locked garage away from the house in case anyone tried to nick it." The Golf will be listed on eBay today (July 15 2011) with a starting price of £20,000.

Why Being Thin Doesn't Always Mean Being Healthy

If there's a universal truth in health news lately, it's that being overweight isn't good for your health. Extra weight, especially in the form of fat, can lead to heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, among other problems. But a new study hints that being lean doesn't get you entirely off the health hook either. In

a genetic analysis involving more than 75,000 people, an international group of scientists led by Ruth Loos at the Medical Research Council in the U.K. found that lean people with a specific genetic variant were at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease despite their lower body fat. The key, say the scientists, is to focus on not just the amount of fat, but the type of fat that you might have. A growing body of evidence shows that fat deposited just under the skin doesn't contribute that much to the development of metabolic disorders such as diabetes or heart problems. But fat accumulated in deeper tissues and organs, within muscle and embedded in organs like the liver, for example, can put you at greater risk of these diseases. And that goes for lean people too: they might not have much visible fat under the skin, but may be sequestering so-called visceral fat inside their

body. What regulates where you store fat? Unfortunately, says Loos, much of it is out of your control — it's largely genetic and gender based. Women tend to store fat under the skin, while men are more likely to deposit it deeper in tissues. As for the genetic factor, in the current study, the researchers identified one variant out of more than 2.5 million candidate sites on the genome linked to body fat. This genetic variant seems to predispose people to depositing visceral fat as opposed to the more benign subcutaneous fat. “We think the gene we found causes an error such that it's harder for these people to store fat under the skin,” she says. “So the fat is stored elsewhere, around the organs and in muscle where it disturbs the normal function of these organs.” What surprised the scientists was the power of this genetic abnormality on metabolic factors such as cholesterol and triglyceride levels and insulin resistance. Even people with low body fat but who possessed this version of the gene, consistently had higher levels of blood cholesterol and were more likely to show some resistance to processing insulin, one of the first signs of diabetes. Many of these individuals showed normal body mass index or BMI readings, which assess weight but don't take into account the percentage of body fat.

A Look Inside the Heart The findings highlight the importance of refining our understanding of the relationship between weight, body fat and disease, says Loos. Many people who look lean may assume they are healthy and may not be as likely to get regular blood tests to check their cholesterol and blood glucose levels. That may put them at higher risk of having a heart attack or suffering from tissue and organ damage due to diabetes because they never knew they were at risk. Getting regular checkups, regardless of your weight, she says, may help more people to stay healthy and avoid diabetes and heart problems.

Back Fat Be Gone By Megan Fennell Back to a shapely back Say hello to gorgeous shoulders and a defined upper back with these moves. Push and touch For shoulders, chest, upper back Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, a 5- to 8-pound dumbbell in each hand, arms down by your sides with palms facing forward. Bring your arms forward and up to shoulder height so the backs of your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Pause, then in one smooth movement raise your arms overhead and tap the ends of the weights together. Slowly return arms to shoulder height, pause, then lower to starting position. Do 3 sets of 6–8 reps. Trainer tip: Keep the rest of your body still when lifting your arms. Bent-over circular row For midback, biceps, chest, upper back Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Holding a 5to 8-pound dumbbell in each hand, bend forward so upper body is parallel to the floor and hands and weights are extended toward the floor. Keeping weights parallel to one another, slowly begin to circle them over to the left, up and in toward your chest, over to the right, and down. Repeat the circle to the right; that’s 1 rep. Do 3 sets of 10–12 reps. Trainer tip: Keep your abs engaged to hold yourself steady throughout the circles.

Typhoon hits Tahiti: 10,000 feared dead Feb 8. At least 10,000 people are thought to have been killed by a fierce cyclone which has hit Tahiti and neighbouring Pacific islands. Winds of 120 miles an hour whipped up 65-foot high waves, forcing people living near the coast to abandon their homes. Not only have villages been wiped out but even islands have disappeared completely. Tahiti's city of Papeete was inundated by the storm; about 75 buildings were destroyed including the American consulate. Other islands badly hit by the cyclone were the Society, Tuamoto and Cook islands.

Quake devastates San Fransisco

APRIL 19. The full agony of San Francisco was revealed at first light today after a major earthquake destroyed most of the city, killing at least 1,000 people and causing a firestorm which reduced hundreds of damaged buildings to ashes. Martial law has been declared and looters have been shot in the streets with military units assisting police in keeping order. Thousands of citizens have spent the night sleeping in parks. Thousands more have fled in ferries and trains as fires continue to rage and more shock waves hit the city. San Francisco's business district and industrial areas have been wiped out. The fashionable Nob Hill district is threatened by advancing flames, even though gas and electricity supplies have been cut off. Firefighters are using dynamite in desperate efforts to contain the fires which have destroyed newspaper offices and other commercial buildings. The city's water mains were destroyed in the 30 second earth tremor which has caused an estimated $200 million worth of damage. Most of the fatalities are believed to have been burned to death or killed by falling debris. Hundreds more are being treated in local hospitals.

Pope tells French: stop persecuting us FEB 21. Pope Pius X today condemned the French government for its new law separating church and state. "We pray to God that the enemies of religion will stop persecuting us," the Pope declared. "We shall fight hate with love, fallacy with truth and intimidation and humiliation with forgiveness." The new French law guarantees freedom of religion but imposes severe restrictions on church property and religious education. The Pope's denunciation of the government for trying to destroy religious sentiment in the country follows the failure of attempts by French church leaders to fight the law.

Vesuvius erupts: lava flow engulfs town

APRIL 7. Lava from the erupting volcano Mount Vesuvius in Italy has destroyed the town of Ottaiano leaving hundreds dead and injured. The river of fire is now heading unchecked towards other communities. In nearby Naples more than 100 people died when the weight of cinders on roofs caused buildings to collapse. The air, thick with choking ash and fumes, was filled with pitiful cries for help, mingling with the noise of frenzied rescue work. For miles around the volcano danger zone, villages and towns are cut off. Elsewhere in the region thousands of people have joined a mass exodus to escape the showers of ash and sand. Boats and trains are at a standstill and the military authorities are distributing emergency food and supplies.

Biggest &!Fastest Battleship in the World

FEB 10. HMS Dreadnought, the most powerful warship the world has ever seen, was launched today, immediately placing the Royal Navy years ahead of its potential adversaries. She is the largest, fastest battleship afloat and is armed with ten 12 inch guns so revolutionary in design that eight of them can fire on either side of the ship at one time. Experts claim this means she will be capable of taking on older battleships with a superiority often to four. The great range and effectiveness of torpedoes now means close range engagements with six

inch guns are doubly dangerous. Only 12 inch barrels give the long range sufficient to avoid hits from torpedoes. Work on the ship began just four months ago and when she is completed later this year she will have cost in excess of ÂŁ3 million. HMS Dreadnought's launch by the King today is the result of action following an Admiralty report last year which stated that no matter what number of ships Britain produced they could not guarantee the safety of the United Kingdom from potential aggressors on the opposite side of the North Sea without a change in

quality of design as well. First Sea Lord Admiral Sir John Fisher immediately ordered the new ship. He had been worried for some time that the quality of British vessels was being placed second to their quantity. He scrapped 154 old vessels a year ago and pressed ahead with the current building programme under which 50 warships and submarines are now under construction. Naval experts believe Dreadnought will render all others ships obsolete, but many in the Admiralty believe she may only serve to fuel the naval building race between Britain and Germany.

Amy Winehouse (died 2011) Ironically, Amy Winehouse owed much of her popularity to her song Rehab which contained the lyric "They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no.'" After struggling with drug addiction, Amy Winehouse finally went against those same words and checked into rehab in 2011. After a short stay, the singer checked herself out of rehab and began a new European tour. She was booed off stage after showing up at her first gig intoxicated and unable to remember the lyrics to her famous songs. Her tour was cancelled following the incident to give her more time to recover. She was found dead in her London home a few weeks later. Brian Jones – The Rolling Stones (died 1969) Brian Jones was the founder of a little known band named The Rolling Stones. While on the phone to secure a gig with a venue owner, Brian came up with the name “Rollin(g) Stones” by reading it off an album that was laying around. Their music consisted mostly of R&B covers and it wasn’t until Andrew Loog Oldham joined that they began shifting their focus to newer, more original material. This transition reduced Jones' role in the band which was further accelerated with his drug habit and alcohol abuse. He became alienated from The Rolling Stones and eventually, he was no longer a member of the band he helped form. One month later, he was found face down in his swimming pool. Janis Joplin – Big Brother and The Holding Company (died 1970) Janis’ big break came in 1966 when she became the lead vocalist of the psychedelic hippie rock band, Big Brother and The Holding Company. She was renowned for her strong powerful vocals during a male-dominated rock era. Janis Joplin performed at Woodstock after having several shots of heroin and being highly inebriated. In 1970, she flew to Brazil where she cleaned up her act and remained sober for a while. She would later return to the US where her drug habits would resurface and ultimately, get the better of her as she died from an apparent heroin overdose in October 1970.

N

eil Young once said “it’s better to burn out than to fade away” a sentence that would later be found in a suicide note written by Kurt Cobain. Kurt was the 5th member of the 27 club, a group of musicians who died at the age of 27. This week, with the passing of Amy Winehouse, she too has joined the ranks of greats like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and others who are part of this very exclusive club. Amy Winehouse's small musical output, in inverse relation to her outsized talent, made her death last weekend in London all the more tragic. But it's a sadly familiar script in pop music, the history of which is checkered with greats and would-be greats snuffed out too early in life. Almost as soon as news of Winehouse's death broke and spread across social media, fans were inducting her into the unfortunate pantheon of music talents gone too soon. Many noted that Winehouse (27) shared the same age at death as Jimi Hendrix , Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison. Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, however, claimed that a meaningful commonality was being mistaken for coincidence. "It's not age that Hendrix, Jones, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain & Amy have in common," wrote Bragg on Twitter. "It's drug abuse, sadly." Those names were touted on the internet as the "27 Club", a ghoulish glamourising of rock star demise that makes it sound as though even in death VIPs remain behind a seductive velvet rope. It's a term, sometimes called the "Forever 27 Club", that has spawned a Wikipedia entry, a 2008 movie ('The 27 Club'), websites and at least one book ('The 27s: The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll'). The causes of death vary. Jones, the Rolling Stones guitarist, was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool in 1969 and was ruled dead "by misadventure". Hendrix, having mixed sleeping pills and wine, died in 1970 in a London hotel room. Joplin, also in 1970, died in her Porsche in Los Angeles, with heroin suspected as the culprit. Morrison died of heart failure in 1971 in the bathtub of his Paris apartment. Cobain killed himself in 1994. Some have claimed Cobain was aware of the 27 Club. After his death, his mother,Wendy O'Connor, said: "I told him not to join that stupid club." Early death typically mythologises pop stars. Pop culture writer Chuck Klosterman, in his book 'Killing Yourself to Live', wondered why "the greatest career move any musician can make is to stop breathing".

Jim Morrison – The Doors (died 1971) Jim Morrison was a poet, a writer, a filmmaker, and of course, the lead singer for the rock band, The Doors. Controversy surrounded The Doos when they were asked to perform on the Ed Sullivan show. Fearing that the lyric “Girl We Couldn’t Get Much Higher” was too risqué for television, Ed Sullivan requested that the band modify the sentence to be more TV friendly to which they agreed. When they played, Jim proceeded with original wording which infuriated Ed Sullivan. The Doors had great success in the late 60s but Jim Morrison started to get out of control. He was constantly drugged or drunk and would oftentimes show up late for live performances. In 1971, he moved to Paris and a few months later, Jim Morrison was found dead in his apartment. The circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear as an autopsy was never performed. Jimi Hendrix - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (died 1970) There was nothing about Jimi Hendrix that didn’t stick out; from his flamboyant outfits, to his left-handed guitar, or his use of amp overdrive. After being turned down by The Rolling Stones, Jimi was introduced to Chas Chandler via Keith Richard’s girlfriend. They went on to form The Jimi Hendrix Experience a rock band that would revolutionize the genre forever.

In 1969, he headlined the biggest music festival of all time, Woodstock. One year later, Jimi Hendrix was found dead after overdosing on pills and drowning in his own vomit (asphyxiation).

Kurt Cobain – Nirvana (died 1994) In an era where rock music was all about long hair and leather jackets, Kurt Cobain sported short hair and wore flannel clothing. Nirvana became an overnight success when they took Michael Jackson off the number one slot in the Billboard music charts with their smash hit, Smells Like Teen Spirit. Grunge music would go on to flood the radio airwaves throughout the early nineties. In 1992, Cobain wed the equally unorthodox Courtney Love with whom they had daughter Frances Bean Cobain. In 1993, Nirvana, known for their grungy loud music, were approached by MTV and asked to perform a quieter, more intimate acoustic set. Kurt Cobain’s emotional performance in Where Did You Sleep Last Night still sends chills down our spines.

Elliot Prize, Irish Times Poetry Prize, European Prize for Poetry and more.

EXHIBITION OF ROSCOMMON BASED ARTISTS MEMENTO MORI An exhibition of work by artist collective Memento Mori, curated by Caroline Walshe and Jennifer Walshe is on show from August 17 to 25 at the Roscommon Arts Centre. Memento Mori are a group of Roscommonbased artists who make work in a variety of media, from embroidery and felt to sculpture and film. Their work is united by a sense of texture and nostalgia which manifests itself in complementary and contradictory ways. Roscommon Arts Centre is a vibrant, purposebuilt arts space, which is committed to presenting a dynamic and ambitious multi-disciplinary programme of events that creates and develops audiences for the arts and contributes to local arts development in County Roscommon. The gallery hosts an ongoing programme of visual art from local, national and international artists, all of whom have been selected through an open submission programme by Patrick Murphy from the RHA Gallery. The centre’s Project Space is located on the first floor level and it is here that they host our programme of classes and workshops. The space is also home to Roscommon County Youth Theatre and we soon hope to launch it as a second performance space.

Drumcliffe, Co. Sligo For more details contact 087-9680744

What is the free Pre-School Year in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)? The ECCE is a new scheme designed to give children access to a free Pre-School Year of appropriate programme-based activities in the year before they start primary school. Participation in a preschool programme provides children with their first formal experience of early learning, the starting-point of their educational and social development outside the home. Children who avail of pre-school are more likely to be ready for school and a formal learning and social environment.

Will my child be eligible? The ECCE is open to all children aged between 3 years 3 months and 4 years 6 months on 1 September each year. To avail of the free pre-school year in January 2010, children must have been born between 2 February 2005 and 30 June 2006. To avail of the year in September 2010, children must have been born between 2 February 2006 and 30 June 2007.

• Cater for children from 2½ to 5 years • Free Pre-School Year • Family run business • We offer a home from home environment

Where can I enrol my child for the free Pre-School Year? There are nearly 5,000 pre-school services notified to the Health Service Executive (HSE) or registered with the Irish Montessori Educational Board (IMEB). All of these are eligible to apply to participate in the scheme. A list of those accepted under the scheme will be available for parents from their local City and County childcare Committee from October 2009. Parents can contact listed services in their area at that time to arrange for enrolment. If your child is already attending a pre-school service, or will be from September 2009, whether it is a playschool or a full or part-time daycare service, you can also ask the service provider if they plan to participate in the scheme. How is the pre-school year funded? Services participating in the scheme will be paid a capitation fee for each qualifying child enrolled. In return, the service will be required to provide an appropriate programme of activities in early childhood care and education (ECCE) which will be free to parents. While the pre-school year will normally commence in September of each year, a shorter period will apply for those attending from January 2010. How will the pre-school year be provided? Children attending a full or part-time service will normally receive preschool year sessions for 2 hours 15

minutes a day, 5 days a week over 50 weeks. To facilitate parents whose children attend a full or part-time service for only 3 days a week, the service may provide 3 weekly sessions of 3 hours 45 minutes each day. The weekly capitation fee in these cases will be !48.50. Children availing of the free preschool year during January to August 2010 will receive 35 rather than 50 weeks of free pre-school. Children attending a sessional playschool service, typically provided for about 3 hours each day, will normally receive preschool year sessions for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week over 38

weeks. Sessional playschool services which are unable to open 5 days a week, can apply to provide the pre-school year in the form of 3 hours 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week over 41 weeks. Children availing of the free pre-school year during January to August 2010 will receive 23 rather than 38 weeks of free pre-school. The weekly capitation fee in these cases will be !64.50. Some sessional playschools may choose to open for 50 weeks in the year rather than 38, in which case they will provide daily sessions of 2 hours 15 minutes, and full or part-time services may choose to also provide sessional playschool services in which case the 38 week model will apply. Will parents have to pay additional charges to the service for the free PreSchool Year? No, services which participate in the scheme must provide the preschool year free to parents. A service may charge parents for additional services as long as (a) these are provided on an optional basis and (b) appropriate programme based activities are provided to children not participating in an optional activity. For example, a service can offer an additional activity such as music or dance which parents can choose to avail of for a charge. If they do not wish to avail of this activity, their child must continue to be provided with an appropriate alternative activity. Services can also charge for hours which are additional to the free pre-school provision e.g. if a child is in a full-day service for 10 hours, a parent should expect to pay for the 7 hours, 45 minutes per day which are not free. An additional 30 minutes per day, which would be charged for, may be offered

to a child in a sessional playschool. Outings, birthday parties, snacks, etc can also be charged for, provided they are optional for parents. What are Siolta and Aistear? Siolta and Aistear are the National Frameworks for Early Learning which support services for children aged from birth to 6 years. Detailed information can be found at www.siolta.ie and www.ncca.ie/earlychildhoodframework. If you would like further information regarding the free Pre-School Year scheme you should contact your local City and County Childcare Committee. What to look for on your first visit to a childcare facility. • Is it a welcoming environment? Can you visit any time? • How are the staff? Is there good interaction between staff and children? Do the staff listen to the children, and treat them with respect? • Do the children look happy and relaxed? • Is there an outdoor play area? • Are the premises clean, bright and well ventilated? • Ask about sleeping arrangements. Are there assigned cots / sheets / sleeping mats? • Have a look at the equipment and toys on offer. Are they age appropriate, clean and in good condition? • Ask about care plans and routines, are they flexible? Have a look to see if they are displayed on the walls. What will your child be doing during the day? • Ask to see the toilets and nappy changing areas. Are they clean, tidy and well ventilated, and are the relevant procedures displayed on the wall? • Have a look to see if the weekly menu is displayed. • What qualifications do the staff hold? • What are their policies if your child has an accident or becomes ill? * Have a chat with the staff in the relevant room that your child will attend, and feel free to ask any questions you have, and see how you feel. Do you feel comfortable?
