The Director of Tyre Recovery Activity Compliance Scheme (TRACS) Fiacra Quinn said: “Bonfire night is still a big tradition in many parts of Ireland. The thinking in this area has changed considerably in recent years. Most people are now aware of the toxins and pollutants which release into the air when a waste tyre is burnt. Burning tyres is highly undesirable from both an environmental and health and safety perspective. “We are asking people not to seek out tyres for bonfire night, as well as asking tyre retailers not to provide them to consumers if asked, and to secure the waste they have on-site.”

ITH the Eve of St. John just around the corner all over the country children will be gathering materials to light bonfires in celebration of the traditional midsummer festival. Traditionally bonfires were lit exactly at sunset on June 23 and had to be watched and tendered long past midnight, with prayers offered to obtain blessings on the crops. There was much fun and dance and games were played. Wood and straw were the materials burnt in traditional bonfires. However, with changing times many bonfires are now used as a means of disposing of waste. Waste materials such as plastic and tyres contain chemicals which, when burned, produce toxic fumes. Over the past few years, tyres, paints, chemicals, petrol, gas cylinders, household furniture, asbestos and even cars have been set alight. The bonfire does not destroy these by-products. They are emitted into the air that we breathe. They contaminate the land around the fire and the back gardens over which the smoke passes. Once released, these toxins will persist for a long time in the environment. Vegetables that grow in back gardens can absorb these toxins. When eaten these may affect our health. Some of these effects may be long-term and cumulative. It is important to be concerned about emissions from bonfires, as they are a major source of pollution. Continued on Page 2
