RELAND West Airport, Knock has experienced a roller-coaster ride since its inception back in the early ‘80s when the iconic Fr. Horan secured funding from all possible sources to bring the project to fruition. Now, news is expected shortly from Europe which should see funding for the vital facility secured for many years to come. A decision by the European Commission to approve Ireland’s National Strategy for Regional Airports including Knock is due to be made in the coming days. The proposed aid scheme will last until 2019 and will provide investment aid of €32.5 million as well as operating aid of €10 million. An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, said he does not expect there will be any objection by the European Commission to the government’s proposal which will allow for grant aid of up to 75 percent. “We are committed to the future of Knock Airport which had its busiest year to date last year and look forward to continuing passenger growth with full Government support. Knock Airport is a very important resource to many families in Mayo and surrounding counties. It also offers huge potential for the local economy in terms of tourism. I look forward to the publication of the Commission’s report. This will allow for a further application by Knock to be considered for up to 90 percent grant aid,” he said. Earlier in 2015 there were serious concerns about the short-term viability of the airport if the €40k investment sought was not forthcoming. Approval of the proposed aid scheme is considered to be vital for the future sustainability and development of Knock Airport. Of course, it will also take some pressure off the Taoiseach in the run-up to the General Election. After the government’s bail-out of Shannon airport he has (Continued on Page 2)

T is recognised that people who come through the experience of cancer often go on to lead extraordinary lives and we have witnessed many fine initiatives – to prove that in the modern era there is a life after cancer. Saturday 11th July saw a 40 strong band of women, all of whom had Cancer, launch their very own Dragon boat onto

Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. These women are going to train twice weekly on the lake with the intention of taking part in the Irish Dragon Boats biggest regatta of the year to be held on Sept 12th at the Grand Canal Dock. This team - the Gràine Mhaol Dragon boat team - are the first of its kind in the West, the nearest team being the Donegal Dragons. They

too are a breast cancer team. Mc Hale Caravans, Cabins and Marine have sponsored the gear and the hoodies as seen on the ladies in the picture. Roll on September when we look forward to the Dragon boats regatta and see these forty brave women compete at the highest level – to prove that life is precious and worth living to the full.

Airport stating that funding was dependent on approval from the EU Commission. Towards the end of last year Mayo County Council and the six other local authorities in the region showed their commitment and solidarity by agreeing to become stakeholders in the airport and to take on its substantial

debt. In April, Mayo County Councillors agreed to approve the raising of a loan of €7.3m to facilitate the purchase of a 17.5 per cent equity share in the airport. It is felt permission for the investment will enable IWAK complete a new runway and expand the airport’s apron, though other vital add-ons do

not, as yet, qualify for State funding. A study into the airport found that with the necessary investment it has the ability to create 2,000 full-time jobs for the region and the financial input could be worth €270m. The airport expects passenger numbers to grow to over 1.3m by 2023.

with unique festival

he streets and venues of Ballina were taken over by a unique six day Mayo Manchester Tradfest on bank holiday weekend for the launch of the MM Tradfest week. The tourism initiative was a partnership between the Manchester based Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business group and the Mayo County Councils diaspora website www.Mayo.ie. TD Dara Calleary launched the six day festival on Friday 31 July which featured a parade through the streets of Ballina followed by an outdoor performance in Dillons historic Victorian cobbled courtyard.

The group have already received praise from the President of Ireland for the festival which features over 50

events at 20 venues which continued until Wednesday 5 August. Opening weekend highlights included a sell out Mayo Manchester Tradest Gala Concert at the Ballina Arts Centre and a Street performance as part of the Kilkelly Heritage weekend. A packed house witnessed a flawless performance from the cast of Beyond the Barricade musical, some wonderful dancing and music from Atlantic Rhythm and the Keegan Academy of Irish Dancers, Joe Keegan (BBC’s The Voice), The Murphy sisters (Claremorris), musicians Fidelma O’Brien and Mairead Hussey and the unique Fianna Phadraig irish Pipers. The inclement weather didn’t deter the enthusiasts who turned out for The Bonniconlon Show on Monday,

It is great to see the diaspora playing such an active role in helping to promote tourism in Mayo. The group often think outside the box and are great innovators; this year’s festival is a prime example of what can be achieved when communities work together.” Ballina TD Dara Calleary in his launch speech commented “The links between Mayo and Manchester have gone back generations, but what Mayo Manchester have done is renew those links and reinvigorate them. Music is an international language and it brings people together, we would like to welcome home the visitors from Manchester and ask them to tell everyone on their tour of Mayo that Ballina is the centre of Mayo and its where things are happening.” Michelle Mulhern, TD, who came on stage for the Gala Concert, accompanied by the Fianna Phadraig Irish Pipers, spoke warmly about the benefits of the Mayo/Manchester connection. Carrick-on-Shannon received a boost last week when it learned it was on the shortlist of 15 towns and villages from across the country being considered for the 2015 Tourism Towns Awards. The north-west (Mayo) town of Belmullet is also included in the short-list. Plaudits to the communities in both towns for such a successful outcome.

he competition, now in its fourth year, is designed to recognise Irish towns and villages where the local

community goes the extra mile to enhance their appeal to tourists. The 15 towns will now be subject over

the next few weeks to a series of unannounced inspections from a team of independent ‘secret shoppers’ who will visit each location and who will look for evidence of a high quality visitor experience and of involvement by the local community and businesses in delivering this experience. They will look at the quality of its attractions and sites of interest and how well the town promotes what they have to offer. Westport took home the overall crown for ‘Best Large Town’ award in 2014, with Kinsale picking up the ‘Best Small Town’ accolade. The shortlist will be whittled down to a final list of ten “Highly Commended Tourism Towns” which will be announced at the National Tidy Towns Awards later this year. Subsequently, the overall winners for the Best Large and Best Small Tourism Town will be announced by Fáilte Ireland in November. Speaking about the competition, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring said, “This award is all about recognising those Irish towns and villages which are really doing something special to make Ireland even more attractive for tourists. ” Paddy Mathews from Fáilte Ireland added, “The Tourism Towns Award seeks to acknowledge not necessarily those towns who do well out of tourism but rather those who do tourism well.”

Silver medal for Sligo man at Special Olympics

he success of the Team Ireland at the Special Olympics Summer Games has been nothing short of phenomenal, with the ladies basketball team taking gold on the final day. But the success has extended as far as Sligo with the fine performance of Coolaney man Thomas Connolly who won silver last week. Congratulatory messages have been pouring in for Thomas, who participated in equestrian events. The 38-year-old, who is part of the Night Riders Special Olympics Club in Sligo, put in a top-class performance and made his village proud. Sligo based Senator Susan O’ Keeffe says: “Congratulations to Thomas on winning a silver medal at the Special Olympics in Los Angeles. It’s a fantastic achievement and we wish him the best of luck with his upcoming equestrian events in the coming days.” “Special Olympics brings out pride and courage in athletes – while also getting families and entire communities involved in the celebration and I want to congratulate all the athletes on their success so far. ” Team Ireland won in excess of 80 medals at the games in Los Angeles.

Leitrim woman shortlisted for photography competition

ervilla Keegan from Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim has been chosen as one of three finalists in the Canon Ireland and TheJournal.ie photography competition. The competition was open to amateur photographers around Ireland and aims to help budding photographers to take their work to the next level and showcase their portfolio on the popular news site. Entrants were tasked with capturing the essence of their home town or county, showing a unique insight into their area that won’t have been seen before. Dervilla focussed on the scenic views and

nature of her local area in Leitrim and Sligo. Dervilla will now go on to the final stages of the competition, where she will have to shoot five photos that continue this theme. All three finalists will receive training from expert photographer Dave McKane from the Institute of Photography and the use of both an EOS 750D DSLR Camera and the PowerShot SX710 Compact Camera to capture their pictures. Each week the work of each photographer will be profiled on TheJournal.ie, giving readers the finalists’ unique perspective on modern Ireland

through beautiful images. Voting will then be opened up to the public on TheJournal.ie where you can select your favourite photographs. The winner will be announced at a Gallery Showcase event on September 10th at a Dublin city centre location, and will be presented with the grand prize of a Canon 750 DSLR camera, a Selphy CP910 compact photo printer and a half-day DSLR training course. The two runners-up will win a Selphy CP910 photo printer each. Commenting, Jonothan Sultan, Marketing Manager of Canon Ireland “We are delighted to announce the finalists of this competition,

oxford-based architect and visual artist Francis Lanuza has just completed and installed his first Irish commission as an emerging artist for his healing spaces work, entitled “Healing Hills”. He was commissioned by HSE Limerick, to produce from his studio a work of art for their Regina House community nursing facility in Kilrush, Co. Clare. Twenty seven artists applied for the commission competition, and it was awarded to Francis. Previous to this he has worked on office space planning and design for Procter & Gamble Brussels Innovation Centre, and as a design architect in Aidea Philippines for a variety of architectural projects. This new commission consists of a series of 12 healing paintings for Regina House, a HSE-run facility. The paintings incorporate Francis knowledge of colour, form, shapes and healing to help people in palliative care. He has previously worked on a healing centre for an ex-

Minister for Health in the Philippines, who is a medical doctor and passionate promoter of complementary and natural healing called “Hilot” – the Philippines answer to the Ayurveda of India. Using his architectural skills, the artist Lanuza has been able to create a work of art that fits and complements the space, enhancing an otherwise blank and dull space and transforming it into breathing space that uplifts both patients and staff. This was the overall objective of the artist, to not just create healing and visionary art but also healing spaces wherever his art is installed. So it’s not just the paintings that are his work of art, the space transforms into a work of art as well - a marriage of art and architecture. The process of the conceptualizing the art was also collaborative, ensuring that the HSE and management were involved in creating the look of the art. Using vibrant colours of yellow, purple, pink and greens, the work is uplifting

and relaxing with a flowing feel inspired by the flowing green hills near Kilrush and dramatic Atlantic waves nearby. Water is a very cleansing element and you can’t help but see all the elements working in these paintings, which are necessary for healing. When these elements are in balance, health and wellbeing ensue according to Asian medical systems. You can see the presence of the wind in the work as it has the feel of smooth satin banners blown by the wind. This brings a vitality to the work giving it a dramatic tone with the artist’s unique brush strokes. “It is hoped that the artwork not only enriches the interior space, but also complements Regina House’ healing purpose and setting the tone for its new graphic identity.” Said the artist. The subtle hint here from the artist is “bringing in the environment” and how a healthy environment is essential for health & wellbeing. Plus, all the

elements are working in harmony with the organic flow of the hills, the vitality of the sea and the subtle feminity of the mother earth supporting everything. Even though the colours are bold they reflect the naturalness of the environment and how Ireland truly shines and on a warm sunny day. There is no place on earth that is more alive and free than Ireland for that – wild, spacious and free. There is a flow to the art as it expands into 12 paintings, Lanuza’s healing story merging from one canvas into the next in progression. Here you can see his architectural mind inspiring the work making the flow look a lot easier than it actually seems with an exact precision which is an interesting comparison – the naturalness of the work versus the way the artist harnesses and transforms the space with exact precision. Lanuza hopes to create more healing spaces of art + architecture through future commissions and exhibitions.

Aussie Rules Star Returns After 'Racism Break'

dam Goodes says he has been "humbled" by the support of the public and fellow players after suffering months of abuse and booing. Australian Rules football player Adam Goodes is ready to return to the game after taking time off amid a racism row that has drawn comment from celebrities and politicians.

The 35-year-old Indigenous Australian said the support he had received during his break was "incredibly humbling". Goodes has long been booed during games and a rival supporter was thrown out two weeks ago for allegedly telling him "to get back to the zoo". His week off saw a social media campaign

#IstandwithAdam being backed by celebrities such as Cate Blanchett. Prime Minister Tony Abbott also had his say, telling Australian radio he sympathised with the veteran player. He told 2SM: "I can understand why he's upset. "Nobody should be subject to taunts - they particularly shouldn't be subject to racial taunts ... Adam Goodes is a good bloke and he's a great player and I hope he'll get treated with respect and civility." Goodes, who has described himself as "a very proud Indigenous man from Adnyamathanha tribe", was named Australian of the Year in 2014 for his work against racism. Billionaire businessman James Packer, one of Australia’s richest men, also backed Goodes and said he was "ashamed" of the abuse being hurled at him. A statement by the captains of all the Australian Rules clubs last week urged fans to stop booing and "call out unacceptable behaviour". A flashmob also showed their solidarity in Melbourne on Tuesday, making spear-throwing motions and raising their fists in the air in unison.

The dance mimicked Goodes’ controversial "war cry" celebration at a game in May one of the incidents that has been blamed for the animosity against him. The other is what some say is the way he unfairly singled out a 13-year-old girl who called him an "ape" during a 2013 game. However, a tweet by cricketer Shane Warne reflected the views of some fans who believe Goodes is booed simply because he is unpopular. He tweeted: "This whole Adam Goodes drama is ridiculous. The public can boo or chant whoever's name they want ! It's nothing to do with being racist." Announcing his return on Tuesday, Goodes told SwansTV: "(I) definitely needed to have that break and get away from it all … I definitely wasn’t in the right frame of mind to play last week". "The fans have been absolutely amazing and the players from other clubs representing and showing their support - it’s been quite humbling." He added: "People have had their opinions and spoken about the issues hopefully now we can move forward and for me it’s about going out there and playing football."

Last Surviving Pilot Of Dambusters Raid Dies

Squadron Leader Les Munro died in hospital in Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, his friend Ron Mayhill revealed He had been unwell for around a week but his death was still a shock, the 91-year-old president of the New Zealand Bomber Command Association

said. "This is a surprise and a real disappointment," Mr Mahill said. "He was a fine man, not just because he was famous as part of the Dambusters but as a man and as a person he was a very fine person. "He got decorations in civil as well as military life. He was a justice of the peace, he was a

local councillor, he was a mayor. "His life was all about service." Sqn Ldr Munro was part of the famous RAF 617 Squadron which carried out the "bouncing bomb" raid to destroy dams in Germany during World War II. It gained its name after dropping drum-shaped bombs which bounced over water and exploded at the base of dam walls in the Ruhr valley. The bouncing bombs had been specially designed for the raid, officially known as Operation Chastise, by engineer Sir Barnes Wallis. While RAF pilots usually flew at least 250ft above ground, the Dambusters flew at only 60ft, at night. The daring raids - carried out on the night of 16-17 May, 1943 - were considered a huge success. Two dams, the Moehne and Eder, were destroyed, leading to major flooding in the Ruhr valley and the destruction of hydroelectric plants, mines and factories considered key to the Nazi war effort.

Bid To Ban Fried Mars Bar Sign Battered Stonehaven's Carron Fish Bar first served up the "delicacy" in 1992 when children came in and asked for a Mars bar to be fried. The chip shop that gave birth to the deep fried Mars bar has battered an attempt by a local council to stop it advertising its place in deep fried history. The Carron Fish Bar at Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire lays claim to having served up the dubious delicacy for the first time ever in 1992. A banner above the chip shop trumpets its claim to frying fame, but Aberdeenshire Council has requested that it be taken down on the grounds of taste. Shop owner Lorraine Watson has flatly rejected the council move. She told Sky News: "I would never consider it. The shop's status is iconic for the town and it's not doing anyone any harm - 99.9% of people buying the deep-fried Mars Bars are tourists who come from around the world. Why wouldn't you advertise it? "At this time of year, we sell 150 - 200 deep-fried Mars Bars a week, so it's not a thing that's going away." Aberdeenshire Council had contacted the chip shop, along with other shop owners in Stonehaven, as part of an effort to improve the appearance of the town centre. A council spokeswoman told Sky News that it was merely a request to take down the banner and, given the chip shop's objections, it won't now be pursued. The Stonehaven chip shop became the first to serve up a deep-fried Mars Bar in 1992 when a group of schoolchildren came in with the bar consisting of chocolate, nougat and caramel and asked for it to be covered in batter and fried. Since then, Scotland's deep-fried menu has grown to include pizza, haggis, fresh fruit, Cadbury's creme eggs... indeed, anything that will fit in a deep-fat frier. It has, inevitably, prompted debate over the years surrounding its effects on a person's health. Chip shop owner Lorraine Watson says she gets as much bad publicity as she does good. She says: "One professor phoned me saying he'd compared the effects of a deep-fried Mars Bar for breakfast compared to porridge and the results were alarming. "I told him that's ridiculous... no-one's going to eat a deep-fried Mars Bar for breakfast. You're not going to be eating them in a daily basis and I wouldn't encourage anyone to do so. "I'm a great believer that you can eat whatever you want as long as you do exercise.

Thief Takes $150k Left By Forgetful ATM Worker The cash machine employee left the bag of cash on a lawn while moving items around in the back of the van during a stop. A bag containing $150,000 (£96,000) is missing in New Jersey after ATM employees left it on a lawn apparently by accident. The two then continued their journey to the next stop until about 15 minutes later when the employee in the back of the car realised the money had been left behind. Both employees of the ATM company have been interviewed by investigators, police said. Surveillance video shows the cash was taken by a man in a white van, possibly a GMC Savana, who pulled up between 11:19am and 11:29am. The footage shows the man driving to a nearby car repair shop and taking away some tyres.

Late August Festival Boost for Foxford

oxford Riverfest and Foxford Walking Festival have joined forces this year and both festivals will be held on the same weekend Friday, 28th – Sunday 30th August. Organisers say the two festivals complement each other and will provide a significant boost to tourism in the town. The 5thannual Walking Festival, which takes place on 29th and 30th August, was officially launched in Foxford Woollen Mills on Tuesday, 21st July, by Dara Calleary TD. The event was attended by local public representatives, including Michelle Mulherin TD, local Councillors,

representatives of the business community, members of Foxford Ramblers Walking Club and organisers of Foxford Riverfest. The Walking Festival will include a variety of walks to suit all levels of fitness, ranging from a climb of Nephin to an easy stroll along the majestic River Moy. The programme includes a walk from Foxford to Lough Conn and back and an Ox mountain climb option. This year’s festival has been brought forward from its traditional October date to the last week of August to coincide with Riverfest which will provide a wide range of free, river based

entertainment over the same weekend. Speaking at the launch, Deputy Calleary praised the Foxford Ramblers Walking Club for their ongoing work in promoting walking. He said the club always welcomed visitors on their regular Sunday walks as well as organising the annual Walking Festival which was now in its fifth year. He said that Foxford had much to offer to visitors and welcomed the fact that the Walking Festival and Riverfest would now take place over the same weekend. Local Councillor, Neil Cruise, referred to the work being undertaken by Mayo Co. Council to promote various types of walking in the county and revealed that the Council planned to upgrade the Foxford Way with a view to making the Foxford/Ox Mountains area more attractive for walkers. Vincent Roche, chair of the Walking Festival, spoke about the increasing numbers of people participating in walking and referred to the undoubted health benefits of walking as well as its value as a recreational outlet. He said that Foxford, and Mayo in general, offered a wide selection of walking options and were well placed to attract more walkers over the coming years. Amanda Rice: 'Site Where a Future Never Took Place' at Ballina Arts Centre Throughout the months of July and August Ballina Arts Centre is presenting Site Where a Future Never Took Place, an exhibition of new work by Castlebar-born artist Amanda Rice. The exhibition focuses on the remains of Western Hats Ltd (1942-81) an Irish Textile industry in the west of Ireland. Established at a time of social and political turmoil in Europe this industry provided refuge to European Jewish exiles in

the roles of ‘technical textile experts’ at Western Hats and otherwise provided vast employment in times of austerity in the west of Ireland. The show includes a new video work and a series of artefacts or remains, particularity relating to the materiality of the site which have been gathered by either former employees of this industry or by the artist herself. The presented objects seek to question the nature of what

constitutes value or the worth of an archival status. Amanda Rice graduated from the Crawford College of Art and Design in 2008 and has exhibited extensively across Ireland and internationally including shows at Flux Factory, New York, Eastlink Gallery, Shanghai and Platform China, Beijing. IT will be a return to the past and much nostalgia for those who recall the Killala Marquee of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s when Live at the Marquee returns to Killala from this weekend, Sunday, 1st August, and continues to 9th August. The project is in memory of Sean Hannick, community leader, who died earlier this year. Sean organised marquees to support the local community in the past and when it was revived last year €32,000 was raised for the Irish Cancer Society and regional cancer care, €10,000 of which Sean had donated personally after he had received compensation for a bank error. Included in the line-up of performers are: Mick Flavin, Declan Nerney, Matt Cunningham and others and there will also be Monster Bingo and a special Strictly Irish Dancing event. All the proceeds will go to local community/youth projects and Foxford Daycare Centre (Alzheimer’s Society).

A short history of Irish Traditional Music

Folk Music is music for People

rish Traditional Music, or Trad as is better known, evolved through the combination of ancient styles with new ways of expression over a long period. The ancient Gaels played pipes, whistles, harps and flat drums. This tradition was dominated by solo performance in song and dance. The Viking settlers brought the fiddle (violin) to Trad and a bit later the Anglo-Normans added flutes and lutes. Over the following centuries the lute gave way to the mandolin, as the banjo, melodeon and piano began to make appearances. These were followed in the last century with the inclusion of guitars, pianos and the bouzouki. The styles of music also drew on different traditions; lilting and melody formed a large part of the Gaelic tradition and there appears to be no evidence of any tradition of choral or communal singing. The traditional ballads with choruses stem from the madrigal traditions of France that came to Ireland with the Anglo-Normans. As a consequence the sing-along is comprised of group songs in English with Irish tunes performed by soloists. Joining in the chorus is allowed but the old preference for enjoying an individual’s performance means that the crowd leave the verses to a soloist. In many Irish songs the crowd sing the third line of a quatrain and leave the last bit so the singer can shine. The same is true of the dancing tradition. The combination of the intricate footwork of the Celt with the group participation of the Anglo-Normans gave rise to the energetic set-dance that complimented the individual styles of jigs.

hen musicians play in a seisiún the measure of their joy is found in the spontaneous reaction of their listeners. The instruments are all tenor and the lack of a strong base line lulls the listener into a light toe-tap that begins to fill out the sound. Next the hands want to clap along and the legs begin to get antsy. By this stage the listeners are hopping in their seats and often rise to batter the boards in an unrehearsed dance that compliments and completes the musical experience Folk music remains popular in Ireland. Like all music it is open to interpretation and the Irish verb ‘cas’ (to turn) is the usual way to invite somebody to play or sing. Individual musicians interpret the same tune according to the way they would turn it. This means that the same song can have many different forms;

type “The Foggy Dew” into YouTube for a good example of how individuals Sinéad O’Connor, Luke Kelly, James Bragg, The Wolfe Tones or Odetta turn the same song. Attending the Fleadh will give you a better experience of the many styles and interpretations that any song can have. The singing competitions will provide a restful change from the mimicked performances that dominate the countless TV contests with their focus firmly on the art of the singer him/herself. The Fleadh can be enjoyed by anybody who has ears to hear and/or a body that appreciates rhythm. You do not need to be an expert nor even to be knowledgeable about music to enjoy the festival. As festivals go the Fleadh can boast that it does have something for everybody.

By Eamon O’Neill The High Kings are a band with a rich heritage. Consisting of multiinstrumentalists Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden, the four-piece come from backgrounds steeped in Irish musical history. While Finbarr is the son of the Clancy Brothers’ Bobby Clancy, and Brian shares the same relationship with late singer Sean Dunphy, the group also counts a former Irish Tenor among its number in Darren Holden. Completing the line-up, Martin is the son of Irish music legend Finbarr Fury. In a parallel with the Fleadh Cheoil, The High Kings are on a mission to assert Irish Music’s place on the global stage. “We were put together to carry a flag of Irish music”, affirms Martin. We caught up with the singer ahead of this year’s Sligo Fleadh to talk about life in the High Kings, the current state of Irish music and culture, and his memories of Fleadhs gone by. Martin Furey knows a thing or two about Irish music. With his father and uncles comprising one of Ireland’s most celebrated traditional acts – The Fureys - he was never far from a session growing up: “Myself and my sister, we’d hear the music all night long, and we’d lie awake listening to it”, says the amiable performer as

we begin our chat. Now a successful musician in his own right, as a member of The High Kings since their inception a little over eight years ago, Martin has helped steer the band to their current position as one of Ireland’s most successful traditional musical exports. Building a new audience for Irish music, the singer is surprisingly modest when it comes to the band’s achievements: “We have made amazing progress”, he says simply of their successes, which include a number three placing on the American Billboard World Music chart. These days Martin may be more likely to been seen on stages in some of America and continental Europe’s largest concert halls, however he is no stranger to Ireland’s most important traditional music gathering: “The Fleadh was the first saviour of the music” he states emphatically. Although never a competitor himself, he has fond memories of attending as a child: “My father competed in all of that; he was a prodigy”, he says. Music it seems goes back generations in the Furey family, and his father wasn’t the only Furey who would play at the Fleadh: “I also remember my grandfather playing”, Martin tells me. “He would pick out the one person who wouldn’t be allowed in the session, give them

encouragement and show them what to do”, he adds with a wry smile. The Fleadh may be a place for the like-minded to meet, enjoy the craic and of course - like Furey senior - join in on the odd impromptu session, however as Martin is quick to point out, it’s the competitive side of the festival that is of vital importance “for improving the standards of music, and setting the bar for music as if it were a sport”, he believes. The opposite of their laid back father, it was in this setting that the accomplished Furey Brothers flourished: “My father and my uncles would tear straight into major, major players, like De Denann or Paddy Keenan”, he says of sessions gone by. It’s this approach that Martin believes reveals the real magic of the Fleadh, where “Ideas are exchanged and tunes progress”, he reasons, adding: “New music is born, and old music is reborn like a phoenix from the flames every year”. The sharing of musical ideas between peoples is something that Martin asserts has been going on

for centuries: “This music has been around in various forms for hundreds and hundreds of years”, he enthuses, continuing: “If history is to believed, over time while we were trading with the rest of the world, we were also collecting and developing a style and form of music; island by island, county by county and continent by continent”. The end result, he believes is “what we have here now, and it’s represented in the Fleadh”. If the Fleadh has helped to keep Irish music and culture thriving, then the High Kings have been playing their part too, by bringing Irish music to a new audience and popularising it for a whole other generation. Martin is philosophical when it comes to the quartet’s – and indeed a generation’s responsibilities: “The music and the language were two important things that were left in our charge,” he muses, adding; “it is our honour to represent this music, a lot of which the Fleadh has been responsible for keeping alive”. Were they around today, the High Kings of Ireland themselves would

surely agree that Irish music and culture is in safe hands, and it’s an upbeat Martin Furey that brings our chat to an end: “Irish music is alive and well, Irish sport is alive and well, and thanks to the likes of Clannad and Rónán Ó Snodaigh who spearheaded it entirely throughout the 1980s and up until today, the Irish language is alive and well also”, he says. As for the future, The High Kings are looking forward with a singular goal: “We want to get an Irish ballad to number one in America. And we’re really determined to make that happen.” states a driven Martin Furey. Before that there’s another tour, one that will be stopping off in Sligo just after the Fleadh festivities have ended: “We seem to play in and around the Fleadhs” says Martin. Perhaps the High Kings could build their own festival? “We’re at the edge of every Fleadh”, laughs Martin: “it’s a fringe festival - ‘The Sligo Ballads Fringe Fleadh Festival’!.” The High Kings play Garvogue in Sligo on 11th August. All the way home ....Cathy Jordan

t is a very rare day indeed when Cathy Jordan is not playing, listening to, learning or practicing music of one kind or another. It has always been this way. Cathy has been the famed front woman with the traditional Irish band, Dervish, for the past 23 years. Her musical versatility, natural curiosity and undeniable talent has always brought collaborations with other musicians from all genres. A sublime vocalist and master musician, Cathy, courts humility while always celebrating the

music itself. For it is music which has led her on a great journey. This is not just the geographic journey of touring and playing all over the world, but also the full and rich personal journey of honing your craft and finding the best places in which to celebrate it. 'I have traveled all across the ocean A lonely stranger on foreign shores far from the old ones who loved me dearly far from the one place that I call home'

Born the youngest of seven children in Scramogue, Co Roscommon, Cathy had a happy and lively childhood. “We were seven extroverts. A wild bunch. I think the only time we stayed still was when someone was singing, so there was a lot of singing in our house.” she laughs.” It calmed us all down simultaneously. It was a house full of music, and my happiest times was when we were having one of our singing sessions. I had quite a repertoire from the age of three. I was never shy! There was a small collection of gramophone records in the house hold, mainly Irish traditional and American country music, but there was also the strong oral tradition too. The passing on the music to the next generation.. Cathy remembers the excitement of a neighbour returning from England with a large record collection. “ I was delighted, I had nearly worn out our own, so it was great to be introduced to exciting new names like EmmyLou Harris and Louden Wainright. I learned lots of the songs and would sing anything really. I guess I still do. ” Local Talent Shows and School musicals gave the gregarious young Cathy an outlet for her gifts and she quickly knew where her future career would lie. A short-lived time as a pastry chef only served

to galvanize the thought of a music profession and it was not long before she was fronting the Sligo-based band Dervish. Dervish, have been one of Ireland's most hard working Irish traditional groups. They have played in nearly a thousand cities in over 40 countries in the world. Cathy, a self taught guitar, bodhran, bones and bouzouki player has been at the forefront all the way.

They played to over 250,000 people at the Rock in Rio concert, boast twelve albums and have been invited to play for two Irish presidents. Mary McAleese brought them on two official state missions to Latvia and Lithuania, representing

Irish culture and they were recently back in the Aras, to welcome Michael D. Higgins into his new home. They are a calm and collected group of musicians, who have travelled the world together, play well together and support each other in their solo pursuits with enthusiasm. Individually, and as a group, they are remarkably talented and gifted. Cathy's own musical journey has continued within and outside of Dervish. She has spent many years researching and collecting a repetoire of songs from a variety of sources. Old recordings, manuscripts and the archives of older singers. She has a deep understanding and respect for the Irish tradition and is regarded as one of the finest traditional singers in Ireland today. 'I have wandered forbidden cities, made my wish by the wailing wall, threw my silver in the Rio Grande all for my dream of going home' Cathy is currently touring and performing with the Americana group The Unwanted. Comprising local musician, Seamie O'Dowd and Californan Rick Epping. The music speaks of dustbowls and Apalachian trails and the Irish /American emigrant music.

You can also catch her popping into traditional sessions, bodhran at the ready, anywhere in the Northwest counties. Music is everywhere in her life and she laughs at the idea of taking a break from it. “I walk and go to the gym, but my relaxation is rehearsing or practicing music. It’s just always there and it probably always will be”. Sometimes, when she surveys the vast crowds enjoying the music at a festival or concert, she takes a wee moment to think on growing up in Roscommon. “I might be singing a song that my father taught me, and I look across all the happy faces looking up at me and think that he would be amazed by this. !” Its a particularly poignant thought, as her late father was never too enamoured by her choice of career. “He would have preferred if I had a real job, or gotten married ” she laughs “ But then one night, he saw Dervish on that great Irish institution, The Late Late Show, and he was so proud. We were so alike, my father and I, so we used to have wee battles, but after my parents had passed on, I found that he had kept every newspaper cutting that was ever written about

me under the mattress of the bed. “ says Cathy. The house in Scramogue is empty now, but Cathy's acclaimed first solo album All The Way Home, is a fitting tribute to the songs she learned around her parent’s fireside and to all the good memories of home. The album features many of the tunes of her childhood, reworked in her own signature way. The classic ballad , The Bold Fenian Men, has really never sounded so good as she reworks it and makes it her own. Ms Jordan has also begun composing more of her own songs . “ I didn't think I could write, but when you sit down and give yourself some space to create, you find that it is there to be tapped. I am really enjoying it.” She laughs “I am not saying it is easy , but it is satisfying! It is like channeling the creativity inside. ” Cathy lives in Sligo and is a regular at music sessions in the town. “Its a brilliant place to live. It’s a hotbed of creativity with writers, artists and musicians. I think people use Sligo as a muse and get their inspiration from the landscape and from each other. There is good music somewhere every night and when I am not touring, I love socialising and am really impressed with the wealth of young talent coming up, not just in the traditional Irish music scene, but in all the rock, jazz and blues

Northwest Express August, 2015 music too. “ Family is ever important and friends are never far away . “ After I have been touring for a few weeks, I need a transition time, of a week or so, to readjust to life at home, but once that passes, I am grand .” Cathy is never complacent about the life she enjoys. She appreciates the joy of doing something she loves every day. “ I am not rich, but am rich culturally. When you can play the music you love and travel and meet interesting people and still make a living from it, its a bit of a wonder. I love the positive effects that music has on an audience. It’s so uplifting to see the crowd enjoying themselves and music allows people a time to release stress and tensions and experience joy. It is synonymous with positivity and happiness. I am so lucky. he name Seamie O’Dowd is synonymous with the word ‘music’ in Ireland. One of the country’s best loved guitar players, with hugely successful bands and solo performances behind him both on a national and international level, the Strandhill native needs no formal introduction in this town. In recent years another O’Dowd, Seamie’s son Rory, has also been making waves in local music circles, showing exceptional talent and dedication to his craft. Father and son talk here to Kate Winter about their own experiences of starting out in music; the similarities and the differences, the good and the bad, and how the scene in Sligo town has changed over two generations. SEAMIE I’ve been playing music since I was about eight, and listening to it longer than I can remember. Both my parents were fiddle players – my father was in the céilí bands back in the thirties and my mother would have done a fair bit of teaching, working from the house. I took my cue from them and started to play the fiddle and learn tunes as a young one, cutting my teeth in the Trades Club, which was a real mainstay for trad music at the time. I would have only been about twelve when I was going in there, and I got my hands on lots of different instruments and saw great musicians at work, who really influenced me later on in life. The likes of Rick Epping and Tom Moore, who I still play with now and then, would have introduced me to a lot of blues and Americana, folk music and Appalachian music. As time went on, I was drawn to the guitar, having heard guys like Brian Taheny and Christy Moore playing trad on it, and also the polar opposite of Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher playing rock. I was drawn to the variety, to the fact that I could get so

much out of this one instrument. The fiddle was a very distinctive feature of Irish trad, but the guitar was my gateway to so many other worlds of music. I bought my first electric guitar the week I did my leaving cert – It would appear that by that stage I had made a decision of some sort! I think one of the defining moments for me, actually, when I look back at my origins

as a professional musician, was a little while after that, when I had managed to secure myself an interview for a good job as an onsite carpenter in the UK. At the time, jobs were thin on the ground, and like everyone else, I had been going for whatever I could and getting plenty of rejection letters along the way. Music and gigging were pretty much my only source of

income, meagre as it was. So on the day that I had this interview, I had a conflicting appointment to meet a bass player, Donal Kinnane, about this new rock band we were setting up. I was cycling out the road, still not sure which I was going to attend, when I came to an actual cross roads. The right turn took me to Donal and the band meeting, the left to my job interview.

I think you can guess which road I took... That was my first real rock band, and it was called Peel The Grape. We had a fair bit of success too; national coverage from the likes of Dave Fanning, and plenty of gigs about the place. We played a lot in Hennigans – that would have been one of the main music hubs in the town at the time. It was run by a man called Terry Brown, who treated it almost like an arts centre. You could go in there on any given evening and find a poetry reading going on, or a twelve piece band, or some jazz – anything at all. I think the closest thing Rory’s generation have would be McGarrigles, nowadays. I was leading kind of a double life at the time, playing with Peel The Grape and also still playing trad about the place with my father. I started doing the odd solo acoustic set then too, and teamed up a little later with Gerry Grennan, who I ended up doing a fair bit of touring and gigging with over the years. It was great playing with Gerry because the way we jammed really brought together the two sides of what I’d been doing up till that point: the trad and the rock. I was making enough to live on at that stage; music was becoming a credible source of income for me. I wouldn’t necessarily have been making any more money in any other job, so even though it was a bit of a precarious source, it was enough. It was quite soon after that that Rory came along, though, and for a wee while, just while he was very small, music sort of took a back seat. I think at that

stage, in my early twenties, right up until he was born, my music career was only taking shape. As a professional musician now, I see huge strides in development that happened once he was a little older – my involvement with Dervish and the DTs, my solo albums and all that, they all came later. When I was the age Rory is now, it was more just about following my heart and meeting everything as it presented itself to me. Sometimes musicians like to let on that we had it all worked out all along, that it was all part of the plan. But I certainly don’t think I ever knew exactly what was going to happen. Life and music just seem to evolve together. I have to say, it’s like anything you do. Nothing is without its sacrifices, you never know where life’s going to take you. RORY My earliest memories of growing up are of music. I was always influenced by it and was curious about it because of Dad, from a very young age. I was mad about Rory Gallagher and Thin Lizzy even as a toddler. Never that taken with kids shows, I was more into watching Rory Gallagher Live on VHS and trying to copy every move. When I was at playschool, my teacher took my mum aside and told her that I’d requested some Rory Gallagher instead of the boring old nursery rhymes... That was my normal! By the time I was five I used to go to my dad’s gigs with him. I’d bring my instruments along, and when he was getting started I’d go

up onstage, chest out, bold as brass. I’d plonk my instruments down beside him and start doing all the moves I’d learned off the videos. Dad says I saved a fair few gigs for him with my performances. I started to take the guitar more seriously when I was a little older. I went to a few lessons, but I mostly learned through experimenting. I watched my dad a lot, and would ask him if I needed help with something, but generally he just left me to it. It was never something that was forced on me at all. It was when I discovered electric guitar and harder rock that I really got into it. And when I got my first electric guitar, I turned a corner. I was mad for it; that guitar had to be almost surgically removed from my hands. My first gig was in primary school. Me and my friends Peter and Eoin had a band we called ‘Hot Tuna’ and we could play three or four songs. We decided to play a concert in the school, and we did ask a teacher for permission, although I’m pretty sure she didn’t know what she was agreeing to. The next day when we arrived into school with all our equipment, we caused a bit of confusion, but eventually they just let us go for it. They gave us an hour, and brought all the kids from all the classes in to watch us in the gym, busting out the same four tunes for sixty minutes. We rocked it! And that was me hooked. In secondary school I was involved in a few bands too, but music took a little bit of a backseat for a while because I got really into surfing. I was still playing, but just not as much – my

passion kind of got divided between the two. My dad had a policy to never push me towards anything, which was good because I probably would have pushed back if he had. When I was got a bit older, guys like Duane Gallagher and Tabby Callaghan were a serious influence. Duane was in a metal band and he let me sit in on a rehearsal or two. I’ll never forget that. They were unbelievable musicians and the high energy level of the music just had my heart pounding. I jammed with them and my dad a bit and went to some great gigs with Duane, which kept the cogs spinning musically for me really. Then when I was seventeen I met Dean Mahon, who was doing Sligo’s Got Talent at the time. He asked me to get involved and it was brilliant. It was a turning point for me in that it brought me right back to music as a main focus. Playing in front of a packed house with a big sound for the first time blew my mind. My first real, proper band ‘Test For Echo’ formed from that experience. Me and Dean also started the open mike night in The Dunes in Strandhill, which is still running. It’s a great, laid back jamming session, and it’s so good for meeting new musicians and experimenting. In fact, my current band, ‘Blindfox’ formed out of the open mike thing, and it’s going really well. Siofra Jordan is our frontwoman and she can really, really sing! I also gig with Dad a bit these days. That started very spontaneously, I’d just come in from a surf one day and popped

into The Venue, where Seamie was playing. Me and the boys were having a pint and he just said, “Hey, Rory, there’s a spare guitar in the back of the car...” It was a deadly feeling to get up there beside him and just play a few tunes. It was like a grown up version of me strutting about the stage as a tiny fella like I used to. When I play with my dad it’s really natural but always challenging too; I’m always learning. From that I had the confidence to get involved in a lot more of the acoustic gigs that were going on in town. Especially in McGarrigles – Sunday MASS would be a spot I slot into quite regularly. Dad’s dead right, I do think McGarrigles is the Hennigans of our generation. Tricky is great for music and culture and stuff. All these things have been a real learning curve. For the past few years I’ve just been playing everywhere I can and jumping in on any gigs that will have me, I have a real hunger for that kind of thing now. The more you play, the more people the meet, the more opportunity comes your way and the more you learn. I don’t know where music is going to take me. It’s a path I’m on, but I can’t be certain it’s the only route I want to go. I know from experience and from watching my dad evolve as a professional musician that it’s a tough way of life, with lots of sacrifices. So I’m not certain I want to do this as a full time job just yet. Then again, my dad wasn’t all that sure when he was my age either and look at where his career has taken him!

When they send Mr Jenkins ( Henry Judge) around to have forms signed, identities must be switched, more deceptions must be created (all the while keeping Linda in the dark), and only Eric, Norman and Uncle George (Sean Kilgannon) know the real truth. The Jackie Clarke Collection

he Jackie Clarke Collection - Ireland's Memory - is an iconic cultural destination in Mayo. Found here in abundance are unique treasures - 100,000 items - uncensored, rare and priceless artefacts. It is a collection that focuses on the Irish people, their struggles and their triumphs. It is the most important private collection of Irish history, now in public hands. The material in the collection covers over 400 years of Ireland’s history. It includes material belonging to Theobald Wolfe Tone, the father of Republicanism; editions of the first newspaper, dating to 1665; personal items from the 1916 Rising's Leaders; autographed letters from Michael Collins and other activists in the War of Independence and Civil War; the papers of the first Irish President Douglas Hyde including a rare early Bible in Irish; letters from Fenians in America - John Devoy, and Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa - and poignantly, primary material relating to the Famines of the nineteenth century and the subsequent evictions that send the Irish to the four corners of the earth. It also contains rare books, cine films, manuscripts, posters, proclamations (several versions of the Irish Proclamation, including the 1916 Proclamation), legal papers, badges, handbills, works by Sir

John Lavery, rare printed maps (some dating from 1600 onwards) hunger strike material, prisoners’ art, graphics, political cartoons, ground plans, architects plans, engineering plans, newspapers, photographs and woodcarvings. Jackie Clarke (1927 – 2000) was a Ballina business man and a genius collector. In 2007 his widow, Mrs Anne Clarke gifted her late husband's collection to the people of Ballina, Mayo and Ireland, in perpetuity, on condition that it remained in Ballina. This donation to Ireland is in the guardianship of Mayo County Council. The collection is housed in the unique setting of the former Provincial Bank building and walled garden, ideally located on the main shopping street in Ballina town centre. The building was designed by noted Irish architect Thomas Manly Deane who worked on of many of Ireland's finest public buildings including the Government buildings, the National Library and the National Museum. The Walled Garden will be a green oasis in the busy town of Ballina. Over the past five years, the listing of this collection has been carried out by historian Sinéad McCoole, now employed as Manager/Curator of the Jackie Clarke Collection by Mayo County Council.

Oideas Gael's expert instructors lead Walking Donegal programmes that are physically and culturally rewarding for novices and experienced walkers alike or join in with the Sliabh Liag Walking group who hold walks monthly. - visit their website for their walking calendar (www.sliabhliagwalkers.com Fáilte Ireland has designated two walks in the area as part of the national walks network, known as the Glencolmcille Loop. The Drum Loop and Tower Loop. There are plenty of beautiful walks around the village, but two of the best are the Drum Loop and the shorter Tower Loop. Both take the same route, however, the Drum Loop takes a detour only to join the Tower Loop again at a later stage. Drum Loop This walk climbs around the eastern summit of Beefin and Gaveross Mountain before going down again towards the village through the townland of Drum along a steep track, and rejoining the Tower Loop. The Drum Loop means you have bypassed only a few hundred metres of the Tower Loop, which won’t take long to explore. The beautiful lanes back to the village are lined with old stone walls, and you pass the 5,000 year old Mannernamortee Megalithic Tomb and more cross-inscribed pillars along the way. Slieve League Cliffs / Sliabh Liag Slieve League's cliffs reach almost three times higher than the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. The Belfast naturalist Robert Lloyd Praeger wrote in 1939: "A tall mountain of nearly 2000 feet, precipitous on its northern side, has been devoured by the sea till the southern face forms a precipice likewise, descending on this

side right into the Atlantic from the long knife-edge which forms the summit. The traverse of this ridge, the "One Man's Path", is one of the most remarkable walks to be found in Ireland - not actually dangerous, but needing a good head and careful progress on a stormy day.... The northern precipice, which drops 1500 feet into the coomb surrounding the Little Lough Agh, harbours the majority of the alpine plants of Slieve League, the most varied group of alpines to be found anywhere in Donegal." The Glen Loop This walk takes you up to the Martello Watch Tower and you can continue along the cliffs to the deserted fishing village of Port. Situated beside a stoney beach, its isolation is emphasised by the crashing of the sea against the sea gulls cries. Behind Port Hill lies the deserted fishing village at Glenlough (Gleann Lách). This beautiful area has attracted numerous artists and writers over the years, and the coastal walk to Gleann Lách passes the ruined cottage where Dylan Thomas stayed in 1935. The 35 km stretch of coastline between Slieve League (Sliabh Liag) and Slieve Tooey offers the walker a rich diversity of spectacular scenery. For the experienced walker, the challenging trek across Slieve League, whose summit is reached by crossing 'One Mans Pass', provices breath taking views. At 1,972 ft, these are the highest sea cliffs in Europe and have to be seen to be believed! Ireland’s “soft” climate makes it a great place for walking all year round as winters are mild and summers are temperate. Plus, many of Ireland’s landscapes have a special beauty in the autumn and winter months. Clonalis House in Castlerea is a wonderful country house and home to the direct descendants of Connacht’s traditional ruling dynasty and Ireland’s last High Kings. Castlecoote House sits on the grounds of a ruined 16th-century castle, while Strokestown Park House boasts the Famine Museum and fine restored walled gardens, including the longest herbaceous border in Britain and Ireland. For museum buffs, the Derryglad Folk Museum offers a collection of over 5,000 items dealing with farm and folk life. The village of Knockcroghery was famous for almost 300 years for producing clay pipes, traditionally used at wakes. This craft is kept alive at the Claypipe Visitors’ Centre in Knockcroghery, which is well worth a visit. Those in search of their Roscommon roots should head to the County Genealogy Centre in Strokestown. usic production will become mobile in Sligo when the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus in partnership with Fleadh Cheoil Sligo rolls into the grounds of Stephen Street Car Park in Sligo town on Tuesday 11th & Wednesday 12th August. The bus, which contains a fully equipped state-of-the-art music studio, is offering free public tours on Tuesday 11th from 10am to 5pm. On Wednesday 12th, in response to a call for participants, a group of 8 young traditional musicians from Sligo aged between 13 and 18 will have an amazing opportunity to work with a world class crew of engineers to record and produce original music and complete a broadcast quality music video. The Sligo visit is part of a 24-day Irish national tour which will take in 11 counties and reach over 100 young musicians throughout Ireland. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a nonprofit state-of-the-art mobile audio and HD video recording and production facility. The Bus, which was made possible by Yoko Ono Lennon, is dedicated to providing young people with tours of the studios and participation in free songwriting and multimedia production workshops. Opening Ceremony Pageant promises novel fusion of Irish history, folklore and music An artistic interpretation of a meeting between two of Sligo’s best known historical figures, W.B. Yeats and St Colmcille, will feature in the Opening Ceremony celebrations for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2015. A special pageant, entitled: ‘Under Bare Benbulben’s Head’, will tell the story through Irish music song and dance of how an imaginary meeting between between the two might unfold.St Colmcille was a sixth-century Irish missionary who had strong connections with Drumcliffe and North Sligo. The poet W.B. Yeats is buried on the grounds of where Colmcille’s monastery was once situated. The pageant has been devised by the Cos Cos dance group, based in Drumcliffe. “Both Yeats and Colmcille were scribes and visionary thinkers,” explains Brenda O’Callaghan, who is Director of the Cos Cos dance group. “Even though they are part of different periods of Irish history, their enduring legacy is still evident locally to this day. Our pageant imagines how a meeting between these two historical figures might unfold, and aims to celebrate Sligo’s special connection with them using Irish music, song and dance.” 130 community volunteers and musicians, ranging in ages from 4 to 84 will entertain the Fleadh crowds during the Opening Ceremony on Sunday, August 9th. The vibrant and colourful pageant is scheduled to begin from Sligo City Hall at 3pm, and will weave its way through the City Centre before arriving at the Fleadh Gig Rig in Sligo’s Stephen Street Car Park, where the Cos Cos group and volunteers will perform ‘Under Bare Benbulben’s Head’ The pageant will also include a novel ‘take’ on the famous ‘Battle of the Books’. Watch out for a love interest too! The Opening Ceremony for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann takes place in Sligo’s Stephen Street Car Park on Sunday, August 9th. For the second consecutive year, the Official Opening will be made by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.

Yeats by Candlelight 11th/12th/13th/14th August @ 12:30 pm in the Methodist Church wine street After the success of our Yeats Marathon in June, Sligo Drama Circle presents its next contribution to the celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the poet William Butler Yeats – Yeats By Candlelight. This lunchtime show will take place in the unique setting of the

Methodist Church in Wine Street, right in the heart of Sligo from August 11th to 14th. The show details the life and loves of W.B. Yeats in a 55 minute presentation with a special focus on the women in his life. The show begins with Yeats’ first meeting with Maud Gonne and proceeds to share stories and anecdotes of his friends and lovers. These stories are given context with

reference to the political and cultural life in Ireland at the time, mentioning Home Rule, the Anglo-Irish Literary Revival and, of course, the Easter Rising in 1916. The show is interspersed with extracts from nineteen different Yeats poems which illustrate the unfolding story. Many pieces of information about W.B. Yeats will be revealed of which many people may be unaware.

Well known historical figures mentioned during the course of the show include Oscar Wilde, Charles Stewart Parnell, Lady Gregory, Countess Markiewicz, Patrick Pearse, John Millington Synge, Seán Mc Bride, James Connolly, Roger Casement and many more. Directed by Michael Leyden with technical direction by Fintan Whelan, the show is presented by three actors: Damien Quinn, Orla Mc Sharry and Máire Hynes. With live musicians and projections of the characters mentioned in the show, this will be a treat for Yeats lovers and everybody associated with Sligo. Taking place during the week of the All-Ireland Fleadh in Sligo, Yeats By Candlelight will give locals and visitors alike the opportunity to experience a unique show in a unique setting. The show will start at 12:30pm sharp daily, August 11th-14th, with admission only €5. Booking is not necessary, but seating is limited so early arrival is recommended.

If you’re not cruising on the lakes in Co. Fermanagh or fishing, here’s a selection of other things to visit or things to do. 1. Take a stroll in Ely Lodge Forest... Ely Lodge Forest is a pretty quiet place, not very well known by tourists and located only a few kilometres from Enniskillen. Note that the forest extends over 250 ha by the Lough Erne, and its planting began in 1940. 2. Drive near Monea Castle... On the right-hand side, you can see a photo taken near Monea Castle. County Fermanagh is still overall quite rural and has got quite a lot of forests, green fields and lakes. I thought this view is both nice and representative of this county, despite the grey sky... 3. Visit Enniskillen Town... Enniskillen (from the Irish: Inis Ceithleann meaning "Ceithleann's island") is the County town in County Fermanagh. It is located

almost exactly in the centre of the county between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It has a population of approximately 11,500. On the right-hand side, you can see a photo of a part of the town, crossed by River Erne. 4. Visit the buttermarket of Enniskillen... The buttermarket is an area of Enniskillen, which has been converted into an Irish art and craft centre, specialised in sale and promotion of Irish and European craft products (paintings, sculptures, vases etc.). There you'll also be able to meet local artists. 5. Visit Enniskillen Castle... Enniskillen Castle was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires chieftains. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century, it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. This historic site now houses 2 museums.

Originally from Waterford, but long settled in Sligo, Mícheál Ó’Domhnaill is instantly recognisable from his work on national TV channel TG4. A passionate Gaeilgeoir and key member of the Fleadh committee last year and this, he talks to Kate Winter about Irish culture, language and his hopes for the future of the town.

At Home In Sligo I had never actually been to Sligo until I met my wife, and it was through coming up and visiting her family in the early nineties that I got to know the place fairly well. She’s from Mullaghmore and I’m from Waterford. We were living down there and when the time came for me to do my own thing work-wise, it gave us the opportunity to choose where we wanted to live. We looked at various places, but in the end, we said, why not Sligo? as we both loved it, and she had family here. So we moved up here in 1999, lived in town for a while, then made the move out to Grange in 2007, and we’re happy there ever since. It’s a great town to work in, small enough that you get to know people well and quickly, so I would know lot of people in many different fields here. To me, it’s an untapped gem in Ireland, though the word is finally getting out there about how much

incredible culture, art, music and theatre there is in this town, quite aside from the amazing landscape. A Grá For Irish Culture I was brought up in the Gaeltacht, in Ring in Co Waterford, so Irish is my first language. I didn’t know any English until I went to school. I suppose it’s like anything really, your formative years are very important. I still do a lot of my work through Irish, with TG4 and that. It’s a language I use daily; it’s a business language, a social language, and everything else too. In the Fleadh office here in Sligo, we often get people coming in and speaking Irish for whole conversations. I grew up steeped in Irish traditional music as well, being from the Gaeltacht. I would have learned it as a child, though unfortunately I didn’t keep it up once I got to being a teenager. But my own kids play music now, so there’s always music in the house.

And Irish sporting culture is a phenomenal thing, really. There’s nothing like bringing a tourist, or someone who’s never been, to a hurling game, to Croke Park or to Thurles, and watching them get absolutely blown away... it’s just so exciting! All of these different strands of Irish culture, between the music and the sport and the language, are all things that are very important to me. The Mother Tongue The Irish language itself is under threat in Gaeltacht regions, though they say it’s growing in urban areas. People are leaving the traditional areas and villages and going away abroad or to the cities. These areas are small anyway so when you lose numbers from the young community it can have a big impact. It’s tough, but at the same time, there are people doing amazing work to assure that the language stays at the forefront, which is encouraging.

There’s huge amount of work to be done in this area though, and I for one don’t know what the answer is. The bottom line is that language is, unlike music and sport, something that is harder to maintain, but if it were to go... Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Broadcasting Career I started out as a teacher. I qualified as a primary teacher and I taught for several years. As a twentysomething, I taught in Spain for a while and I had a great time. When I came back, TG4’s programmes were just starting to get off the ground and a friend of mine had been in discussions with a Catalan TV company about acquiring the rights to screen Spanish football on TG4. They were having a bit of trouble with the language barrier, so he asked me one afternoon if I’d come in and give them a hand trying to sort this thing out... I did and a couple of days later he got back to me and said the rights had been acquired and would I be interested in getting involved. So I took a year out and said I’d give presenting this programme a try and see how it worked out. We used to go over to Spain every couple of weeks and record pieces over there and bring all that material back this was all in the era before satellite technology when we physically had to bring this stuff back to Ireland for our weekly show. It was great fun. After that, Sky came in and took over a lot of that stuff, so we went into live sports, and I got into presenting that and producing and all the rest. All this happened in the nineties and here we are today, doing more and more matches every year. It’s growing all the time and we get a great reaction. That’s my main job these days, though I do lots of other things too, around editing, camerawork, production, promotional videos, event management, PR, documentaries. It works really well, with several different things going on all the time... I’m very fortunate in that every day throws something different up and so it’s not really like work at all. Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann Until the Fleadh came to Sligo, I was only an observer, really. There was a small group of people, steeped in traditional music here, who would have seen the potential for the town and who fought very hard to get it to Sligo. There was competition from different places around the country but eventually we got the go ahead to host it in 2014, and later in 2015 as well. From there it was all about

organisation and that’s when I was brought onboard... We have about twenty five different committees working on all the different, specific areas. Things like accommodation, volunteering, concerts and events, health and safety; it’s a huge undertaking. We would have started planning as soon as we got the word that we were hosting it, so by the time last August came around, there was at least a year’s worth of work gone into it and we had a great response from all the people who came and visited. And word will surely have gone around that it was a great Fleadh, so hopefully this year will be even bigger and better. Lessons Learned None of us had organised a Fleadh, and Sligo had never hosted a festival of that scale before, so no matter how you plan and work and try to figure things out as best you can beforehand, you’re always going to find things that need to be tweaked. One of the things we’re all keen to do as a team is to have people leaving this event with an idea of what Sligo is all about. Not necessarily just coming along and experiencing the Fleadh in isolation from everything else that goes on in the county. Sligo is unique in that there are so many different activities within a few miles of the town that absolutely anybody can do. We want the broader community to really benefit from this event. To communicate to the visitors, for example, that you can get surf lessons, climb Knocknarea, play golf, go stand up paddling, or a myriad of other things that aren’t town-centred. Because that’s the nature of a Fleadh usually, that it’s just 8-10 streets at the centre of a town. Sligo works really well for that, but we still want to sell the broader story a little better. The main things I learned from last year are that number one, we have an amazing community spirit, with so many people who get involved for nothing but to create a buzz in the town, and that secondly, the actual geography of the place lends itself perfectly to an event of this scale. We could run a large-scale midsummer festival every year in Sligo if people worked together on it. The footprint works very well... You’ve got the river, Stephen St car park and all kinds of great bars and restaurants. All the different, isolated strands that we have going on at the moment would do well to be brought together into one BIG festival. And when people all push together in the one direction, it’s amazing what can happen.

Applications are now open for this new programme. The College also offers an Access Programme for school leavers and mature students who wish to study at third level. Participants who successfully complete this Access Course are eligible to apply for direct entry to full-time degree courses at St. Angela’s College or NUI Galway. Survey 2015 Reveals Student Satisfaction at Castlebar College Of Further Education

recent student survey had revealed high levels of student satisfaction with courses and teaching at Castlebar College of Further Education. The survey showed high levels of approval by students ,successful exam achievement, progression to 3rd level and job placement. Students expressed their approval for the one-year full-time FETAC/QQI horses at the college . An Open Day running from 2 - 6 pm on Thursday on 4th September at Castlebar College of Further Education (CCFE) will showcase remaining places on courses at this leading further education college. Teachers and Guidance Counselors will be available to advise, assist and encourage. CCFE has helped pioneer one of the great educational success stories of recent years: the development of further education offering FETAC (NQI) Level 5 and 6 courses. Traditionally known as Post Leaving-Cert courses, they also provide opportunities for adults returning to education. The courses are geared to the world of work, but also offer a chance to

progress to a third-level college. Courses include Childcare, a range of Business and Secretarial courses, Music, Media Studies, Gaming and Animation, IT courses, Nursing , Health Care and Applied Social Studies. A recent student survey showed a high level of satisfaction with courses at the college. Applicants apply directly to the College for courses using an easy application system which is not as fussy as universities and IT Colleges. Unemployed applicants should consult their social welfare office in relation to allowances. Third-level style grants through SUSI may also be available. Ann Coyne, Guidance Counsellor explains: “Many students gain enormous confidence and maturity. Work experience is an important element. Personally, I believe that many students would benefit from a PLC course before embarking on a long course in third level to which they may not be fully committed. Courses are college style ,local, rigorous, full-time but inexpensive. They provide a level of readiness for college or work which is exceptional. Taking the Stress Out of College L

iving away from home tends to be the toughest adjustment for first-year students. You've had a clear role within your family all of your life: the family comedian, the mediator, maybe the translator. These roles can help you feel like you belong somewhere. It can be hard adjusting to a new place and a new way of fitting in — especially if it seems like your family is doing fine without you. You may feel homesick in your first weeks and months. The first thing to know about homesickness is that it's very common. In fact, just about everyone experiences it at some point in his or her life. It might not feel like it when you're in it, but going through homesickness helps us all grow stronger and builds our coping skills. Homesickness can force you to challenge yourself into trying new ways of meeting

people. Try joining your campus gym and taking exercise classes or studying in public places like libraries and cafes. Try to identify your feelings and fears, and talk about what you're going through. The sooner you deal with these issues, the sooner you'll feel better. If you are homesick, it can help to call, write, or email your parents, other family members, and friends from home to let them know how you're doing and to tell them you miss them. Who else can you talk to? For starters, that person sharing the dorm room with you. Roommates can be great built-in buddies. As first-year students themselves, they're probably experiencing many of the same fears and worries that you're dealing with. But what if you don't get along with your roommate?

Meeting Roommates & Making Friends In some cases, it can be a good thing if you and your roommate aren't much alike. A different perspective on things may be helpful. In fact, it's probably wise not to expect that you'll be best friends with your roommate to avoid disappointment. Katie came to college expecting to be best buddies with her roomies. But over time it felt like the two of them made her the third wheel. With a switch in roommates and a change in attitude about what to expect, she ended up having a blast. Not everyone can switch roommates, though. That's why it helps to start with the idea that you'll respect your differences no matter what. If you and your roomie don't get along, it can help to find someone you do feel understands you — which should be easy on a campus with plenty of people. Giving new students an opportunity to meet is one idea behind freshman orientation. And many schools have student organization nights where all of the campus clubs gather and promote their organizations, so you can meet people with the same interests as you. You'll also meet tons of people in class or in your dorm. If you're really having roommate or friendship troubles, make a stop at the school counseling centre. All colleges and universities have one, and first-year fears are something the counselors know well. The counselors will either talk to you one-on-one or if there is a peer group for students who are feeling like you, you can choose to join it. Talking to others who are in the same situation can be comforting. Some students turn to alcohol, heavy partying, excessive sleeping, smoking, or drugs to deal with their first-year problems. Unfortunately, students who resort to getting wasted all the time to cope with their new

situation often find that too much partying brings lots more problems, like interfering with their ability to keep up with assignments, papers, and exams. In the worst case, it may mean getting in trouble with the college judicial department.

Staying Healthy Away From Home Sore throats, sprained ankles, and wisdom teeth that act up are as common among college students as homesickness. It's very easy, especially in a dorm environment, to catch bugs like the flu. People come in and out of your room all the time, and some of those who are sick may pass it on. And who has time to go home to the doctor when they get sick? With this in mind, universities have created health centers staffed with doctors, nurses, dentists — even nutritionists and counselors — ready to tend to your needs. Check out your student orientation packet or your school's website to find out more information about the health

Prevention Tips It's great to be prepared if you get sick, but better yet, how can you prevent getting sick in the first place? The usual measures, like washing your hands frequently, also apply at college. But you'll also have to think about community bathrooms, shared computer terminals, and cramped living quarters, all of which make germs way too happy. If you spend time in the school computer labs, it's a good idea to carry some antibacterial hand lotion in your backpack. When your roommate gets sick, use a germfighting solvent to occasionally wipe down shared things like doorknobs, telephone receivers, and remote controls. And don't underestimate the power of eating well and getting a good night's sleep. As always, the best defense is a good offense.

The top five reasons most diets fail

e’ve all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It’s frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure. But it doesn’t have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an Ottawa-based obesity expert and the author of The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work. “If there was a quick fix we’d all be skinny,” he points out. “The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be.” So what’s preventing us from getting there?

We eat out too often and consume too much processed food. “We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day.”
