RELAND West Airport, Knock has experienced a roller-coaster ride since its inception back in the early ‘80s when the iconic Fr. Horan secured funding from all possible sources to bring the project to fruition. Now, news is expected shortly from Europe which should see funding for the vital facility secured for many years to come. A decision by the European Commission to approve Ireland’s National Strategy for Regional Airports including Knock is due to be made in the coming days. The proposed aid scheme will last until 2019 and will provide investment aid of €32.5 million as well as operating aid of €10 million. An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, said he does not expect there will be any objection by the European Commission to the government’s proposal which will allow for grant aid of up to 75 percent. “We are committed to the future of Knock Airport which had its busiest year to date last year and look forward to continuing passenger growth with full Government support. Knock Airport is a very important resource to many families in Mayo and surrounding counties. It also offers huge potential for the local economy in terms of tourism. I look forward to the publication of the Commission’s report. This will allow for a further application by Knock to be considered for up to 90 percent grant aid,” he said. Earlier in 2015 there were serious concerns about the short-term viability of the airport if the €40k investment sought was not forthcoming. Approval of the proposed aid scheme is considered to be vital for the future sustainability and development of Knock Airport. Of course, it will also take some pressure off the Taoiseach in the run-up to the General Election. After the government’s bail-out of Shannon airport he has (Continued on Page 2)
