S Summer approaches the issue of farm safety comes into focus and some tragedies in recent days and weeks reminds us of the need to Think Safety when it comes to the modern farm. One third of all workplace fatalities occur in farming and almost 50% of farm accidents occur around tractors and machinery, while the largest proportion of people killed are either children or old. While the question is posed, Is it time the HSA began to penalise farmers over Farm Safety – face fines for not taking safety training or observing their Farm Safety Risk Assessment Documents - everybody in the vicinity of a farm should be conscious of the dangers, particularly for children. In terms of numbers, if the current level of farm deaths continue over 200 farmers will have died in this decade and, sadly 38 children have died in farm fatalities since 1996. Over 1,000 injuries occur on farms each year, some relatively serious in terms of the degree of disablement as a result. When it comes to children every farm should have a safe play area and other parts of the farm no-go areas. If this is not possible, particularly in very small farms, special consideration must be given to machinery, heights and water, the latter deserving very careful scrutiny when it comes to small children. Many farm ponds are out of view with reeds and grasses obscuring the edges, holes and drains are left exposed after building work; even water barrels can present drowning risks. Practically every farm has a slurry pit and some are not solid enough to stand in. The “Think Safety” strategy is paramount, particularly as so many farms are one-man operations ; children are naturally curious and with couples either busy working together or with different jobs young children may have too much scope to wander around farms on their own. For this reason, accurate assessment of potential dangers is necessary and adequate safeguards employed all over the farm to stem the current level of tragedies.

Castlerea’s Su – promoting women’s rugby worldwide

Su receives the Allain Rolland award for Referee Performance of the Year at the Leinster Referees’ Dinner. Well-known rugby referee and Castlerea native Su Carty was recently presented with the Allain Rolland award for Referee Performance of the Year at the annual Leinster Referees Dinner. Now in its third year, the award, recognising former international rugby referee Allain Rolland, honours consistency in performance something that the West Roscommon native could identify with. This is a well-deserved accolade for the Roscommon woman who developed a passion for the game from watching the Six Nations games on TV and has certainly pushed the boat out in terms of her determination and commitment to promoting women’s rugby at a national

and international level. “I suppose the award recognises someone who is available, flexible and has progressed to the next stage — someone who has excelled over the season to the point where they’ve made a significant move or change in what they’re doing,” Su explained. Su’s enthusiasm really started five years ago when she took her first steps in refereeing. Progressing through the ranks, she currently officiates at J1 level, which is the standard just below the All-Ireland League. She has refereed men’s U-20 games, schools’ rugby, Women’s AIL matches and has been an assistant referee for women’s internationals.

During her time as Development Manager for Women’s World Rugby, initially, the narrative had existed that it wasn’t easy to attract women to play the game, never mind being handed the responsibility of overseeing matches. “It’s very easy to say we can’t do something until we test it. So I tried it. My first match was an U-13 games in Terenure College. I don’t think I was as nervous since the day I sat my Leaving Cert. I thought that I would be crap at it. But at the end, something inside me kept telling me that I wanted to do it again,” she recalled. Su soon realised that she had the potential to progress, subsequently being selected as part of a focus group. She highlights coaching and feedback as the cornerstones to her improvement as a referee. “It’s a combination of quality coaching and assessing. You’re constantly being assessed. You take very clear lessons from games and learn from them. It’s like a game plan really. You’re always looking to see what you can bring to the table the next day,” she explained. Su admits that she “hadn’t a clue” that she was in line for the Allain Rolland award but she felt that things had been coming together nicely over the previous couple of months. “I did a junior schools’ cup quarter-final recently, and I really felt at the end of the match that I had nailed it. Everything I had learned and taken on board had come together. When you’re the fittest person on the field, it should make everything else much easier.”

Foxford to host 2018 Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigh Eo

IT’S been over 50 years since Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigh Eo was last held in Foxford and the town noted for its love of traditional music can now look forward to early Summer,

1918 when they will hold the event they last hosted for two years – 1963 and 1964. The announcement was made last week and the Admiral Brown branch is

already making preparations for the event which will take place over two weekends early in May 2018. The County Fleadh is an annual event which takes in May each year, hosted by one of the 16 branches in the country and this year it returns to Ballinrobe for the second year, after a very successful Fleadh in the town last year. Over 1,000 visitors are expected in the town of Foxford over the two weekends, with hundreds taking part in lots of competitions in Irish music, song, dance and story-telling. The winners go on to represent Mayo at the Connacht Fleadh Cheoil and those successful in Connacht will go on participate in the All-Ireland which will be

held in Drogheda in August 2018. The dancing competitions will take place on Bank Holiday Monday May 7th and other competitions on weekend of May 12th and 13th. Foxford’s Comhaltais is a very active branch that has achieved tremendous success over the years in the AllIreland finals. The town also hosts the Annual Foxford Traditional weekend which takes place from October 5th and 8th October. A highlight will be Sean Keane in concert on Friday, October 6th. The cultural weekend includes workshops, competitions and music sessions and the local committee in Foxford expect a busy year and they prepare for early May 2018.

Tubbercurry Garda Station not fit for purpose – Scanlon Fianna Fáil TD for SligoLeitrim Eamon Scanlon has called on the Government to commit funding to allow for the refurbishment of Tubbercurry Garda Station. The current building dates back to1960 and is now completely unfit for purpose. Deputy Scanlon says the Government committed to “new and refurbished Garda Stations throughout the country, which will be critical to delivering effective policing”, in the Programme for Government and he wants to see this promise fulfilled.

Raising the issue with the Taoiseach in the Dáil this week, Deputy Scanlon said, “The situation at Tubbercurry Garda Station is completely unacceptable and needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency. There are major health and safety issues the building is no longer meets the needs of a functioning Garda Station. “When it was built back in 1960 there was only one Garda Sergeant and three other Gardaí. Today there are two Sergeants and eleven Gardaí and I understand

there are plans to increase those numbers further. Tubbercurry is the third busiest station in the SligoLeitrim division and it is difficult to understand how officers are expected to carry out their day to day duties in these conditions. “The station has no interview room, office space, privacy or disabled access. It’s a ridiculous situation – the Garda Building Unit has visited the station and is well aware of the situation but Government funding is needed to carry out the

upgrade works. The Programme for Government contains a commitment for “new and refurbished Garda Stations” and the Taoiseach must ensure that this commitment is upheld. “The Taoiseach says the Minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works will respond to this request. I will be continuing to press the issue with Minister Sean Canney to ensure that the necessary works are approved and carried out as a matter of priority”, concluded Deputy Scanlon.

Calls for special Brexit case for counties like Leitrim

Leitrim County Councillor Enda Stenson with the European Commission Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier.

L

eitrim County Councillor, Enda Stenson, recently met with the European Commission Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier and put forward the case for special

treatment for the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Cllr Stenson said “coming from a border county in Ireland I can tell you that

citizens on both sides are very worried on the impact that the UK leaving the EU will have on their daily lives. “For our farming community it will be

devastating and we need to find a solution which reflects what currently exists for the ‘island of Ireland’. “The EU has been good for its Member States and in particular for Ireland. And I would like to reiterate that I believe that Ireland must and will remain to in the EU. We need to work together not apart,” the Independent councillor stated. The Committee of the Regions in the European Parliament has adopted a resolution which calls for action to limit the impact on on-going programmes and projects. Among its requests, the Committee calls for a deal that addresses the “potentially significant” impact – in particular on the island of Ireland - on the EU’s farmers, rural areas and biodiversity, as well as “temporary arrangements so as to minimise disruption to the current long-standing R&D projects, and by extension to local economies.”

110 people in Mayo diagnosed with bowel cancer every year As it launches its annual bowel cancer awareness campaign at the beginning of April the Irish Cancer Society has said that information on bowel cancer continues to be the most sought after information by the public on its website. April is bowel cancer awareness month and the Society said that the symptoms and diagnosis of bowel cancer was one of the top four pages visited on the Irish Cancer Society’s website in 2016, and was lookedfor more than any other specific cancer type. Bowel cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Ireland with the latest figures saying that over 2,500 people are diagnosed every year, and approximately 111 of these cases are in Mayo. Around 1,000 people die from the disease annually, making it the second most common cause of cancer death in Ireland. While the numbers of new cases per year continue to rise, survival rates have increased gradually with 5 in 10 surviving five years post-diagnosis in 1994 compared with 6 in

10 in 2012. Joan Kelly, Cancer Support Manager with the Irish Cancer Society said “Bowel cancer usually occurs in people over 60 years of age and is often diagnosed in the later stages. However, if bowel cancer is caught early, it is extremely treatable. “During this month of April the Society will be campaigning to make everyone in Mayo aware of the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer. This year we have also developed an easy to use online Bowel Health Checker (www.cancer.ie/bowelhealth) which is a short quiz designed to inform people about staying healthy, being aware of their bowel health and informing people about the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer. Once completed, there is a handy printout to take to your doctor should it be needed.” Andrew Jones, 38, a bowel cancer survivor, said “I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in 2013 and I just couldn’t believe it when I got the news. I had been experiencing some abdominal pain but I really thought it was something minor. What fol-

lowed that diagnosis was a year of treatment and sickness and it was a huge challenge to beat the disease. “Thankfully I have come out the other side but it is absolutely essential that we do more to raise awareness of this cancer and encourage people to go to their doctor if they are experiencing any of the symptoms. “Bowel cancer is very treatable, I am living proof of that, but the earlier it is caught the better. If you get a letter calling you for your bowel screening – just go. Take it from someone who has actually been through bowel cancer.” To speak to a cancer nurse on any aspect of bowel cancer contact the Cancer Nurseline on Freephone 1800 200 700, email cancernurseline@irishcancer.ie or drop into one of 13 Daffodil Centres in hospitals nationwide. For information on Daffodil Centre locations and opening times email daffodilcentreinfo@irishcancer.ie. Senator Mitchell said he was honoured to be asked to receive the invitation. “I will be delighted to visit the home town of Mary Robinson and to have the opportunity to address an audience in a vibrant West of Ireland community. I have admired Mary’s contribution to the world over many decades and it is a pleasure to be able to come to her home town, reflect on her work in so many fields and sense the well springs of her inspiration since she was a child. Unsatisfactory answers to questions concerning Mayo GMIT Campus MANY Mayo people are getting frustrated about a lack of clarity when it comes to decisions relating to the future of Mayo GMIT, after recent reports of fears for some courses there and others matters. The latest has been the disappointing response from Education Minister

Richard Bruton to Fianna Fáil Deputy Lisa Chambers when she tabled a parliamentary question in relation to its future. Deputy Chambers asked if the GMIT plans to advertise and hold an open competition to fill the position of campus director for the Castlebar

facility, to which the minister replied: “The position with regard to the Campus Director for the Mayo Campus of GMIT is that since the introduction of the moratorium on public sector recruitment, an Employment Control Framework (ECF) has been in place for the higher education sector which provides institutions with considerable flexibility to fill vacancies, through recruitment or promotions on the basis of meeting an overall ceiling of posts. “Higher education institutions are autonomous bodies and are responsible for their own day to day affairs, including the allocation of all of its income (both public and private) and for the management of its staffing compliment.” As far as Deputy Chambers was concerned this response would not satisfy her or Mayo people in general. On the issue of appointments to the governing body of the GMIT, the minister stated: “The members to the Governing Body of the

Institutes of Technology are appointed under Section 4 of the Regional Technical Colleges (Amendment) Act 1994. “While the legislation provides for me in my capacity as minister to appoint members of the governing body. I, as Minister, have no power to nominate the members to be appointed. “That onus is on the relevant Education and Training Boards to ensure that requirements under the Act are met with regard to the nominations. The legal requirements with regard to the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) board, as set out in the legislation.” The minister did not respond to a question regarding the appointment of an additional representative from Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB) to the governing body. Shaun Purcell of MSLETB was appointed to the board on February 24 last and is the only board member with a Mayo education connection.

“IF YOU WANT TO GET FIT CUT DOWN ON THE DRINK” O ne of Ireland’s leading fitness coaches, a Sligo native, is bringing his expertise to Co. Mayo this month, but he has warning for those trying to get fit - stop drinking on a regular basis. The weather is getting better and people are upping the ante in terms of exercise and getting outdoors - but for many their performance will be very disappointing despite all that sweat and hard work. Coach and nutrition expert Alan Williams believes he know why that’s the case for many – it’s drink. Paul says alcohol is something of an “elephant in the room” for Irish people – even those training for that 10k, marathon or triathlon event. “Those ‘few drinks’ are predictably catastrophic for your goals. Alcohol is empty calories and tends to have a high sugar content,” says Sligo-based Alan.

And the facts speak for themselves. While a pint of lager has 200 calories, one large glass of wine contains 225 calories. A bottle of wine has 675 and a pint of stout 205 calories. With the recommended daily intake for men being 2,500 calories and for women 2,000 calories those ‘few drinks’ could well make up most of that allowance for many. Alan explains: “If you’re eating and training to drop a few pounds in a healthy manner you’re probably working off a calorie deficit of 300-400 per day. Over five days you’ve got approx. 1500 calories in the bank. “However if your ‘few drinks’ is five pints that’s coming in at 1000 calories. And with alcohol in the system you’ll crave food. So you’ll probably eat a calorie-laden meal on the way home. And unfortunately this method of eating will continue into the next day too.” Alcohol consumption will lead to dehydration making training more difficult. Your blood sugar levels will be low too which means you won’t have the energy to get as much from your session. “Realistically you probably lose two days of top training,” says Alan. So what’s the solution? How can you stay in training but also enjoy those few pints or glasses of wine after a long week of work? “I’d never ask anybody to give up alcohol completely, I understand that relaxation and enjoyment are important too. However I would suggest the ‘few drinks’ should be closer to once-a-month, rather than every weekend,” says Alan. “The reality is you can’t have it all. By all means have the occasional drink….but if it’s going to be every weekend you’re fighting a losing battle.” Alan is hosting a ‘Change Your Own World’ seminar at the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar, Mayo on Friday, 21st of April at 8pm. The seminar will cover healthy eating, exercise, mindset and motivation. See: www.alanwilliamscoaching.com Alan Williams is a coach, trainer, motivator and expert in the areas of wellbeing and lifestyle, fitness and confidence building. He uses a decade’s experience and specialist knowledge to get clients fitter, eating better and feeling happier. Alan’s methods have attracted a large audience with clients and social media followers loving his focus on all aspects of health and cleaner living. From Thump Boxing classes and outdoor Operation Transformation sessions for larger groups, Alan is passionate in his belief that wellbeing can be achieved by everyone. Alan’s experience includes eight years working as a fitness coach for the Radisson Hotel Group. The Sligo-native began his own journey to fitness and wellbeing as a teenager growing up in the village of Bunninadden. “I was painfully shy,” he says. “I wanted to do something that would turnaround my confidence and give me energy.” Exercise and learning the other pillars of wellbeing such as health and nutrition, gave him the belief to realise his dreams.

on Thursday 13 April at 5.30 p.m. The event is open to the public. Local business The Shed Distillery will be serving special edition cocktails created from their delicious Gunpowder Gin. Much more than a straightforward how-to guide, Dream Gardens will inspire readers to dream big and create a stunning and truly personalised outdoor space. This will be achieved by answering questions including: Who are you? What do you like? How do you live now and how would you like to live? What will be the garden’s function - fun family

space, entertainment space? Space to clear your head? Or to grow fruit & veg? Once these questions have been answered, the book outlines how to find your style and includes examples of contemporary styles, gardens of the world, western-style gardens, and gardens by climate. There are also sections dedicated to creating moods with colour, using materials to enhance your concept and bringing light to your space. Published by Mercier Press, Dream Gardens will be available online and nationwide from 11 April. RRP€18.99

Enniscrone Golf Club features in new Tourism Ireland ad in US Golf promotion is ‘hole in one’ for tourism Enniscrone Golf Club in West Sligo featured on the hugely popular NBC Golf Channel last week before an estimated 6.5 million households in the U.S. In tandem with the start of the US Masters in Augusta last week, Tourism Ireland launched a new golf campaign in the United States. It included a brand new 30-second ad which featured Enniscrone Golf Club and encouraged American golfers to “challenge soaring dunes at Enniscrone”. And, a further 1.2 million people were treated to messages about golf in Ireland online, on golfchannel.com. Tourism Ireland aimed to build on its successful ‘Home of Champions’ campaign, reminding golfers across the US about our fantastic golf courses where our champions – including Rory McIlroy, Pádraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke – honed and perfected their skills. On the evening of 6th April Tourism Ireland hosted its annual ‘Meet the Irish’

media event at the US Masters – highlighting our world-class golf to influential golf journalists from right around the United States. Key messages included the fact that Portstewart is home to the 2017 Irish Open and that Royal Portrush will host The Open in 2019. The ad will also air in the US later this year, around other Major championships and around relevant TV shows. Promoting golf holidays on the island of Ireland is a major focus for Tourism Ireland in the United States. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said: “Tourism Ireland has an extensive programme of promotions under way this year, to highlight our world-class golf and encourage more Americans to consider a golfing vacation on the island of Ireland. In particular, we are highlighting the 2017 Irish Open at Portstewart and the 148th Open which is set to take place at Royal

Portrush in 2019. Our message is that Ireland offers American golfers the complete package – with some of the very best golf in the world, stunning scenery and the warmest of welcomes. “Tourism Ireland has prioritised North America for 2017, as a market which offers a strong return on investment, in terms of holiday visitors and expenditure. A number of factors are working in our favour, including more airline seats than ever before, from 20 gateway cities across North America to the island of Ireland, with numerous new flights and expanded services in the pipeline for this year.” Tourism Ireland is also promoting our superb golf courses on Ireland.com and through social media. The organisation has invited influential American golf writers to visit the island of Ireland this year; and had a significant presence at the PGA Show, earlier this year in Orlando.

Notes From The Dentists Chair DIGITAL IRISH STATIONS

With John McCann BDS BSc - Principal Dentist Maguire McCann Dental Surgeons GDC Reg No. 68239

WHAT IS ROOT TREATMENT?

R

oot Treatment, root canal, call it what you will, this is one area of dental treatment which seems to strike dread into the heart of very many of our patients. Yet it is normally a reasonably straightforward process, and it allows the dentist to save teeth which would otherwise have to be extracted. Root treatment entails removing dead and/or infected tissue from inside the tooth and filling the resultant space. In the centre of all teeth there is a hollow space, known as the root canal. In a healthy tooth this space contains the nerve and its attendant blood vessels. These can become damaged by trauma to the tooth, by decay, or even by extensive dental work, such as deep fillings. If the damage is severe enough, the nerve will die. Once it has died it can very easily become infected, leading to pain and sometimes swelling. This is what is commonly known as a dental abscess. When this has happened the dentist has only 2 alternatives; extract the tooth, or perform root treatment. In the latter case, the centre of the tooth is opened and any dead, dying or infected tissue is cleaned out. The cleaning is carried out with special files which also shape the root canal to make it easier to fill later on. The dentist will also irrigate the inside of the root canal to wash out any debris. Root treatment usually requires at least 2 appointments. In between visits, an antiseptic dressing and a temporary filling will be placed in the tooth. On subsequent visits, if the tooth is free of pain and

swelling, the root canal can be filled and the tooth restored. Unfortunately root treatment is not always successful. Irrespective of how careful the dentist is, success cannot be guaranteed. The failure rate is typically around 10-15%. Failure of root treatment usually results from recurrence of infection, or because the infection has not been cleared in the first place. Either way it frequently leads to extraction. A further complication of root treatment is that teeth will often darken after the procedure. This can be a significant cosmetic issue with front teeth. In addition, root filled teeth can become more brittle over time. This is due to the fact that the process removes the internal blood supply of the tooth, causing the dentine to dry out. As a consequence of this, root filled teeth are more susceptible to fracture in the longer term. Both the cosmetic and structural complications often lead to root treated teeth requiring further treatment. Not uncommonly, it is necessary to place a crown on the tooth after root treatment. However, because of the risk of failure of root treatment, it is prudent to wait before placing any crown. Opinion varies on how long one should wait to assess the success of root treatment, but 3-6 months is typical. Given all of the associated risks and complications one might well ask, why do root treatment in the first place? Well, quite simply, if a tooth requires root treatment the only other alternative is extraction. Ultimately, preserving the natural tooth is the best thing to do if at all possible. Not necessarily an easy path, but certainly the one any dentist would choose for their own tooth if they were in that position.

Taking these blocks of colour onto the ceiling will help inject a touch of personality into your home. Sumptuous Plum and Urban

Obsession feature wall matt emulsions, both €19.99 for 1.5L, against a background of Nutmeg White matt emulsion, €28.29 for 2.5L, all Dulux, is a gorgeous combination. Did you know your home's design can affect your bank account and love life? Try these feng shui tips based on the ancient art of balancing energy. Attracting Money: Don't Use Water Symbols "Drippy faucets are a sign of money going to waste," Karen says. "Whatever the state of your water, your finances mirror those." To increase your bank account, repair broken fountains and remove all stagnant water from your property. "Ever heard the expression, 'I just can't get my head above water'?" Karen asks. It's best not to display water-based artwork or mirrors higher than your nose, which carries the same significance in feng shui. For most of us, that means no mirrors or water scenes above the bed.

Attracting Money: Make Your Front Door Inviting If it's hard to find your front door or it's confusing as to how to get in, it'll be hard for opportunity to make its way into your life as well, explains Karen. Put in an archway or gate to denote the front door if you need to, and make sure the doorbell works. The welcome mat should be bright and fresh. Sweep the steps and sidewalk in front, and add a potted plant to the entryway. Karen's rule of thumb: "If a trick-ortreater can't tell where to go, your front door isn't clear enough.

Attracting Money: Lose Clutter, Add Plants and Water "To bring in more prosperity, it's important to create a vibrant, healthy, inspiring and clutter-free home," explains Laura. "Clutter jams up good energy and leads to procrastination. Bring in vibrant life forces such as plants and flowers, and don't forget to have fresh air circulating. Fountains are important wealth adjustments in feng shui because they stimulate prosperity and energy, and symbolize money."

Attracting Love: Create a Cozy Master Bedroom Oversized master bedrooms need to be cozier in order to have good relationship feng shui. Start by closing off any adjoining rooms, including a bathroom, office, patio or gym, suggests Karen. If there's no door, install curtains. If you have a sitting area, arrange the chairs toward each other, and downsize with a smaller bed — go from king to queen or queen to double. "When the space gets bigger and bigger, people tend to live further and further apart emotionally."

Attracting Money: Decorate in Red, Purple or Green "Color has a powerful impact on mood, and red is considered auspicious and powerful. Think of walking the red carpet or wearing a red power tie," explains Laura. Purple and green are also key colors for attracting prosperity but there's a hitch. "If you really can't stand the color green, it won't work for you. But if you do love purple, paint a wall lavender or add a violet throw to your couch. Then tune in to how your space feels. It's not just filling your home with stuff — it's about decorating with mindfulness and enhancing the vibration and power of your own home.

Attracting Money: Keep the Kitchen Clean "Your kitchen is directly related to your ability to attract money," says feng shui consultant Suzanne Metzger. Keep your pantry and refrigerator organized and full of fresh food you actually use. To attract more money, keep the stove clean — every burner must work and be used equally. Lastly, remove all clutter from the kitchen table.

Attracting Money: Bring In New Opportunities Sometimes it doesn't take money to make money — just a yard sale. "This is a zero-cost fix," explains Karen. "Take out clutter to increase prosperity; what you don't use, don't love, don't need. Space equals opportunity."

Attracting Love: Add a Splash of Pink Because it's the color of relationships in feng shui, pink is one of the best colors to decorate a bedroom with, says Ken. Pink represents love, joy, happiness and romance. It doesn't need to be a whole room, even a splash will do. Alternatively, light blue is a positive relationship color. Attracting Love: Focus On One Another When it comes to the master bedroom, it's not about the view or TV, explains Karen. "The bedroom is about passion and rejuvenation." To increase intimacy in your home, install heavy, cozy drapes over large windows, remove the TV and never sleep with a laptop, iPhone or other electronics buzzing near your bed. The bedroom should be low-tech and romantic. Avoid pictures and decor featuring anyone other than the people sleeping there — wedding pictures work, but family photos don't.

Attracting Love: Arrange Dining Table in a Circle When it comes to creating more love, the dining room is the second most important space in a home, the master bedroom being the most important. Arrange the dining table so everyone can see each other, and set out enough chairs for everyone even if the family doesn't eat together every night, says Karen. Symbolically, it's important to include the whole group.

Attracting Money: Add More Fun If your bedroom is too neat or stuck with a sterile feel, "add something whimsical that makes you smile," suggests Suzanne. It could also be artwork or a photo of a couple laughing together. This can bring positive energy into the room, and in turn, improve the relationship.

Attracting Love: Put Furniture Legs on Rugs "Never put all your furniture against the walls," says Karen Rauch Carter, feng shui consultant and author of Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life. "Furniture should be arranged to support communication, so forget where the walls are. Put at least the front legs of all furniture on the rug — not just around it — and people will sit there and talk."

Attracting Love: Add Doubles to Every Room "If you want to start a relationship, don't surround yourself with single imagery", says Laura Benko, feng shui and holistic design expert. "Avoid a single chair in the corner, solitary images in artwork and solo photographs. It's important to create the energy of partnership around you, otherwise you are continually enforcing singularity." Add a second chair to a sitting area, double up on nightstands and surround yourself with pairs of everything.

Attracting Love: Add Happy Family Photos To improve your marriage, display smiling photos of yourself as a couple and your family in the hallways, kitchen or other high-traffic areas, suggests feng shui consultant Ken Lauher. Avoid putting family photos in the master bedroom, which should only include photos of the couple. Attracting Love: Remove Negative Symbolism "To decrease stress and arguing in your home, check your surroundings," Laura suggests. "One couple that fought constantly had crisscross swords over their bed, and another couple had guns on their living room wall. Keep photos and artwork pleasing, inspiring and uplifting."

Attracting Love: Leave Room for Someone Else "Single people build rooms for single people," says Karen. "They have one chair, one nightstand and so on. Add another nightstand for your future someone." That goes for the closet too. "Don't fill it up with your stuff — honor the space and carve out a dresser drawer or a shelf that's not yours. You don't need to literally have enough room for two people to live there, just leave room for opportunity."

Attracting Love: Arrange Kids' Beds for Better Harmony "Feng shui applies to all the occupants in the house," explains Laura. "Children can be even more susceptible to their surrounding energies, so it's very important to make sure their beds are placed in the commanding position. They will feel easily startled and vulnerable if their backs are to the door." Laura also says electronics should never be stored or charged near a child's bed.

Choosing the Right Kitchen for Your home

T

he kitchen is the work horse of the home and these days needs to be so much more than a place for cooking, chilling, freezing and laundry. Of all the rooms in the home it can be the most expensive to design, refit and decorate because it requires appliances as well as furniture - at the very least a cooker, fridge-freezer, oven and hob and washing machine. And because the kitchen is multifunctional, it is also the room that takes the most planning and leg work. To achieve a dream kitchen, one that is not only functional and practical, but beautiful too, requires research, budgeting and oodles of design inspiration... Decide on your kitchen layout and appliances Unless you are lucky enough to be building your own house or planning

a new kitchen extension, your kitchen layout will be decided for the most part by the dimensions of your room; the smaller the space, the fewer your choices of kitchen layout. Smaller houses and flats with kitchenette-style areas built off single living/dining rooms tend to house galley, L-shaped or U-shaped kitchens. But designing a dream kitchen can be easiest and least expensive in smaller spaces like this. There is no agonising over which appliances will go where as there tends to be little choice. And that is the joy of the small kitchen: it virtually designs itself. Another is that a small kitchen allows you to use quality materials that would be too expensive in a larger space. Once you have decided on the position of your fridge-freezer, sink, washing machine, cooker, hob, dishwasher and microwave you can

give the remaining space over to wall and base unit storage. You’ll also need to spend time researching appliances to find the models that work for you – freestanding or builtin oven; electric, gas, induction or domino hob; washing machine or washer-dryer/tumble dryer? In larger spaces you will have the luxury of thinking about a kitchen beyond the basic functions of cooking, chilling, freezing and washing. You may be able to design a fully open-plan space that opens out to the garden and across your ground floor, incorporating dining, lounging, TV watching and entertaining and homeworking or study – in short, a fully multifunctional family space. In larger homes it might even be possible to remove some basic kitchen functions to other rooms by creating a separate larder, laundry or utility room. Plan your kitchen storage There is, let’s face it, an awful lot of stuff to store in a kitchen: food, drink, tableware and cutlery, glassware, pots and pans, utensils, cookware, linens, small appliances such as food mixers and blenders, cleaning and laundry products, refuse and recycling bins - all manner of paraphernalia. If you are budgeting for a small space you are likely, therefore, to want to squeeze in as many units as possible. Remember that drawer units offer more storage capacity than cupboards, always fit the insides of doors with wire shelving for storing smaller items such as medicines or

herb and spices, and make use of carousel mechanisms in corner units. Free up cupboards by keeping oftenused items that won’t gather dust, such as plates and bowls, on open shelving and by using hooks to hang up pans from wall or ceiling racks. Make sure everything you are storing away is organised and easy to access. Regularly spend time sorting through cupboards and drawers – the better organised your bits and bobs are, the less space they will take up. A larger kitchen space allows you to consider additional features such as kitchen islands and peninsula units, butcher’s blocks, glazed wall units, more extensive open shelving, larder units or kitchen dressers. Or the ultimate luxury in kitchen designing – deciding to leave a space empty. As you plan your storage, factor in your lighting too, so you will always have directed, functional lighting over worktops as well as gentler mood lighting elsewhere.

Choose your kitchen style, materials and colours Our choice of kitchen style, colour and materials can be very personal, but, alongside budget, will be influenced by the type of home we live in (country cottage, Victorian or Georgian townhouse, modern flat, 1930s semi). Think about what would best suit your own home. This isn’t necessarily an interior design style that reflects the period of your house, but can be a conscious decision to do something very different – many owners of period properties choose no-holds-barred

modern kitchens. Most people will go for one of three broad styles: traditional, modern or country and most kitchen manufacturers design their ranges of kitchen cabinetry accordingly. Within each of these core styles there are, of course, all sorts of permutations to make decisions around – fitted, freestanding, Shaker, rustic, painted, hi-gloss, retro. However as kitchens are expensive rooms to fit, remember that whatever style you choose needs to last far longer than the looks you might choose for other rooms in the house. Go for a broader look, rather than something that might be considered a narrower, more passing interiors trend. For example, rather than the recent trends for monochrome, black or colourful designs, there may be more kitchen mileage in classic looks such as white, wood finish, and the traditional muted paint shades of blue, green or grey. Whatever style you choose, it will inform the materials you use throughout the kitchen. If you go for a country-style kitchen chances are you will have painted units, a ceramic butler sink, oak worktops, stone or brick flooring, a butcher’s block and range cooker. Essentials for a modern kitchen would probably include handle-less gloss units, stainlesssteel sink and appliances, composite worktops and marble flooring. So the style you choose will, to a large extent, determine the choices you make around the colours and materials that will constitute your dream kitchen.

Juicing for Health By Deborah Sherlock

J

uicing is nothing new but this new craze of super juicing and raw foodies has recently become increasingly popular. So what is juicing? In essence, Juicing is simply removing the juice from whole fruits and vegetables. The fibre is broken down in the fruit and vegetables ensuring that a rich supply of nutrients, antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals are more easily absorbed by the body. Juicing can reduce your risk of cancer, boost your immune system, remove toxins from the body, aids digestion

and helps with weight loss. Virtually every health authority recommends that we get 6-8 servings of vegetables and fruits per day and very few of us actually get that. Juicing is an easy way to guarantee that you will reach your daily target. Juicing provides versatility in fruit and vegetables because it helps people enjoy fruits and vegetables they might not usually enjoy in their whole form. It can also balance the pH in our bodies, and in turn, help to protect us from conditions related to acidic imbalances, including heart and kidney disease and diabetes. When starting out with juicing I would recommend a mid ranged price juicer. Start by juicing vegetables and fruits you really enjoy. Juices should taste pleasant. Be

adventurous with flavour combinations. I do not recommend a juicing-only weight loss plan because the lack of fibre and protein in juices often leaves u feeling hungry. Add juices to your

including a vibrant juice in your daily diet. It might just be enough to put that extra pep in your step!

A special event this year is the Choral Concert by AnUna in St. Columbus Church, Drumcliffe on Friday, May 5th at 8pm.

Anúna - founded in 1987 by Irish composer Michal McGlynn in an effort to create a physical voice for his compositions many of which are strongly influenced by the history and mythology of his homeland. Ireland has a long and sophisticated history of traditional singing or sean nós which McGlynn uses as the basis for many of his arrangements and compositions. The name Anúna is derived from the Gaelic term An Uaithne, a collective description for the three ancient forms of Irish music - Goltraí (song of lament), Geantraí (song of joy) and Suantraí (the lullaby). An

Pat Shortt – How’s Tings? IT promises to a night of music and mayhem at Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday night, May 6th. Ireland’s most popular comedian explores all sorts of 'tings'... Big tings and little tings... Personal tings and tings that are not so personal... Important international tings and tings that only affect the parish. In Shortt, it’s a funny show about tings!! Not to be missed! Time: 8.00 p.m. Tickets: €28.00. Early booking advised.

Sligo Academy of Music Gala Fri 21 Apr, 8pm / €15/7.50 u18s / The Hawks Well Theatre The Sligo Academy of Music Gala event takes place every year, raising and donating funds to their chosen charity. This year's funds raised will be kindly donated towards the Hawks Well Renovation Fund. A wonderful line up features the Sligo Academy of Music Sinfonietta, Jazz Orchestra,Junior Orchestras and Voice Squad; the Summerhill College Choir; the County Sligo Golf Club Male Voice Choir, Sligo Gospel Choir and Jonathan Carter, Eoin Troy, Joe Hunt, Niamh Crowley, Keith O'Donnell and Leonard Dorrian. There will also be a surprise guest soloist on the night! Founded in 2000 by its current Director of Music, Sligoborn musician Niamh Crowley, to create opportunities for instrumental tuition in the classical and jazz genres in the Northwest, SAM now boasts three orchestras, the Sinfonietta, the Junior and the Jazz Orchestras, who have played at various venues nationwide as well as the Czech Republic, Hungary, France and The Netherlands. This night promises to be a night of exceptional musicianship and a performance not to be missed.

PJ Gallagher A brief history of the Irish willy Fri 28 April, 8pm €20 At The Hawks Well Theatre, Sligo PJ Gallagher is one of Ireland’s bestloved comedians. He is most widely known for the huge success of many characters in the hilarious and sometimes outrageous hit TV show Naked Camera, alongside his DVD of the same name, which received triple platinum sales. In 2008 he took his alter ego Jake Stevens to the US to film a new series called Makin’ Jake. He rarely has time to be himself these days!

Uaithne and subsequently Anúna is a uniquely beautiful instrument. The purity and natural techniques that are employed by the singers explore the stories of ordinary people, poets, saints and scholars. Within these songs are universal truths told through the landscape, the philosophy and the mythology of Ireland and beyond. See www.anuna.ie Tickets on sale at the Fáilte Ireland Office, O'Connell Street, Sligo www.coscos.ie or phone Brenda at 0861925988.

WELCOMING GEORGE It’s yet another coup for Mary Robinson, who has been able to attract former US Senator George Mitchell, who played such a pivotal role in the NI peace process, to Ballina, to address the gathering at the forthcoming annual Mary Robinson Centre International Human Rights Lecture in Ballina on Thursday, April 27th. The evening will seek to address many important national and international issues post-Brexit and a large gathering is expected from local communities to welcome George, who did so much good work to achieve the Good Friday Agreement.

Down and Out in Paris and London This one-man performance comes to Ballina Arts Centre on 20th April, at 8 p.m. A man drifting through life, in early 1930s Paris, teaching English and generally soaking up the rich underbelly of Parisian life, finds himself falling helplessly short and discovering a very different view of life, looking up from below. With a keen understanding of social inequality and a wry sense of humour, he vividly recounts his experiences while down and out. Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell, adapted (and performed) by Phelim Drew is a show that tells the story of a man, living in Paris, and determined to make a living as a writer. All does not go well however and the adventures, he is forced by his circumstances to recount, are the beginnings of a life in poverty. At times funny and entertaining, it is also peppered with the poignant realities of being “At last, genuinely, down and out”. Based on when George Orwell in the late 1920’s went 'underground' and worked as a dishwasher in various restaurants in Paris and spent time on the road as a tramp in the London environs - culminating 15 years later in the publication of 1984. Tickets: €14 / €12. Early booking advised.
