HILE the property market in the west is still sluggish there are strong indications that the price increases experienced at present are largely influenced by a reduction in the housing stock.

House prices in Mayo have risen by an average of 6 per cent so far this year, according to the property website, daft.ie and by almost 4 per cent according to Myhome.ie and Davy, with the average house price in the county now standing at €138,000.

The REA House Price Index, which concentrates on three-bed semis, indicates a 4%+ increase in the sale price of such houses in Leitrim, though such properties, averaging at €86,000, compare with sale prices of approx. €115,000 for similar properties in Mayo.

At this price Mayo is now the second most expensive place in the west to buy such a property, ranking behind Galway where the cost averages €200,000 (city) and €170,000 (country) (Myhome.ie). According to the same Report the average price of a similar property in Sligo is €112,250 and €70,000 in Roscommon. Prices in Dublin are stagnant at present.

In tandem with all of this, the total number of properties for sale at any one time continues to fall. At less than 24,000 nationwide, this is now at its lowest point since February 2007. The biggest falls in availability are now occurring outside Leinster. Across Munster, Connacht and Ulster, there were 13,500 homes for sale in April 2016, compared to almost 21,000 two years previously (Daft.ie). Continued on Page 2

Young Songwriter Award for Leitrim girl Etáin Étáin, a 17-year-old talented singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Fivemilebourne, Leitrim, has been chosen as the winner of this year's Young Songwriter's Award, which was held in The Model Sligo on March 25. Etain’s musical influences are The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and the 70's punk movement.

Launch of “Road to Downpatrick” – a never forgotten visit

UNDREDS flocked to Banagher’s Community/Resource Centre on 2nd April for an historic occasion – the much-awaited launch of a book published by popular local man, Donal McCormack.

“The Road to Downpatrick” encompasses a life-time of local knowledge accumulated over many

decades by a modest 87-year-old who feared that much of what he knew and loved about his local area would be lost to future generations if he didn’t put it together in book form.

However, as he admitted himself, though he started the project seven years ago (at the age of 80), it might have been

shelved for good but for the advent of the Wild Atlantic Way and the Monasteries on the Moy Greenway. A large section of the book traces a path along the Moy estuary between Ballina and Killala, the route envisaged for the Greenway. It moves on to Downpatrick, one of the signature sites along the designated route.

Launching the book, another man of knowledge and local friend, Professor Seamus Caulfield, described the book as a wonderful product, a work of art, beautifully crafted and designed. He said it was ironic that somebody like Donal is regarded in some official circles as part of demographic which is a burden on society.

What he has produced should serve as a wake-up call.

Donal McCormick thanked his wife, family and all those who helped in the compilation and production of the book.

He urged people to look around and appreciate the beauty of north Mayo, the history, folkore, flora and fauna, birdlife, the landscape and all the other wonderful features. Most important, resources should be applied to tap into the significant tourist potential of what we have.

The new publication is an ideal handbook for anybody travelling on this section of the Wid Atlantic Way or the New Greenway.

Donal’s book, “The Road to Downpatrick” is available in all good newsagents and bookshops in North Mayo (Ballina, Killala, Crossmolina, etc.) and is a treasure trove of information for anybody exploring this beautiful part of the county.

Maria helps launch Darkness into Light in Mayo THIS year’s Darkness into Light event in Mayo, launched by Pieta House, in association with Electric Ireland, promises

to be a winner if the atmosphere at the launch night in Ballina’s Manor Hotel last week is any barometer.

A significant attendance, including members of local organisations and volunteers across the county, in addition to Marie Walsh (Rose of Tralee 2014), Joan Freeman (Pieta House Founder), Electric Ireland’s Kevin Molloy.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, May 7th, with Ballina, Shrule, Westport and the newly-added venues of Erris and Claremorris acting as hosts. Darkness into Light is a unique early morning experience which begins in darkness at 4.15 a.m. as thousands of people walk or run a 5 km route while dawn is breaking.

Last year’s event attracted more than 100,000 participants

in some 80 locations across Ireland and abroad.

The Ballina event was truly uplifting, intermingled with music and song. Joan Freeman, Pieta House founder, who attended, said : “We’re so grateful for your continued support.

Your courage, vision and generosity has helped Pieta House bring hope to over 5,000 people alone last year. Darkness into Light is now reaching communities from Westport to Abu Dhabi and many more across the world”.

ofield/Gort na mBó are hosting a celebration concert to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising in Ballina Arts Centre on Friday, 15th April, at 8pm. It will be an evening not to be missed and promises to be a night of the very best of Irish traditional music, song and dance.

Bofield is a small town-land in Bonniconlon parish roughly 4 miles east of Ballina. The name Bofield or its Irish translation

Gort na mBó, is synonymous with music; this relationship with traditional Irish music and song can be traced back to the late 1800’s. The youth format of under 18’s Céilí Bands and Groupa Ceoil began in the early 1990’s and was developed and tutored by Peter Neary. The current tutor is Mark O’ Donnell who progressed through the ranks of Bofield/Gort na mBó under 18’s groups.

As a member of Comhaltas

Ceoiltoirí Éireann, Bofield/Gort na mBó has participated in Fleadh Competitions at local, regional and national level with many All Ireland individual winners as well as 2nd and 3rd places for ceili bands and groups ceoil. The Gort na mBó under 12 Groupa Ceoil took first place in the 2015 Connaught Fleadh. Each year Bofield/ Gort na mBó, host “Sessiun” an evening of Irish traditional music song and dance, this all

takes place in the Fr. Peyton Centre on Thursday evenings in July and August. Bonniconlon is home to Bofield’s Traditional sessions on the second Friday of every month, where the youngest and the more senior members and guests can come together to play a few tunes.

This concert celebrates a significant event - the path to Irish Independence.

Sligo Hospital curtails visiting due to Vomiting Bug Sligo University Hospital sought the co-operation of the public last week to prevent the spread of vomiting and diarrhoea illness in the hospital.

The hospital is requesting that visitors do not attend at the hospital due to the presence of Norovirus (vomiting bug) in a number of wards in the hospital.

The hospital is seeking the cooperation of the general public in preventing the spread of this infection through adherence to the following measures: - Visiting is permitted only in exceptional circumstances and then for immediate relatives during designated visiting times

only (2-4pm or 6.30-8.30pm).

- Visitors who themselves may be unwell or have vomiting or diarrhoea should not visit the hospital.

- Very young children or those with some other serious illness should avoid visiting the hospital, as they may be particularly susceptible to the bug.

Sligo Hospital are also encouraging the public to contact their GP or GP Out-ofHours service in the first instance if they have ‘winter vomiting' symptoms and not to attend the Emergency Department unless absolutely necessary.

GMIT students take top prizes at Technology Competition

WO students from GMIT were overall winners in the final of the Intel Galileo 3rd Level Technology competition which took place at the Science Gallery in Dublin. The competition, which has been running since the beginning of January, is open to all 3rd level undergraduate students on the island of Ireland.

Eight finalists were vying for the top positions, with Tech Smart Home, by David Walshe, and G-Tune by Collin Gill (both GMIT) adjudged worthy winners, while another GMIT student, Ronan Watkins, with his Bluetooth and Wi-fi controlled data gathering car,

was also a finaistl in the competition.

The competition was judged by representatives from Intel who selected two projects as overall winners such was the high standard of the competition. The competition invites students to create projects based on the Irish designed Intel Galileo board.

The Intel® Galileo board is the first in a family of Arduino*certified development and prototyping boards based on Intel architecture and specifically designed for makers, students, educators, and DIY electronics enthusiasts.

The collaboration with Arduino sought to inspire creativity,

learning and invention with Makers and Students and development kits and software programming interface that make it easier for artists, designers and other do-ityourself enthusiasts – who often don’t have technical backgrounds – to create interactive objects or environments.

The following provides an outline of the winning Mayo projects: G-Tune by Collin Gill, GMIT This project is an automatic tuner for guitarists. It works by sampling incoming plucked strings, running a fast fourier transform, finding the fundamental of the sampled waveform and uses that data to turn motors (via PWM) in the correct direction. Once the appropriate pitch is achieved the motors stop. A user will use

an app to communicate back and forth with Galileo. The app will allow user to select what string he/she would like to tune and also what pitch he/she wants to tune too.

Tech Smart Home by David Walshe, GMIT The goal is to automate the control of many aspects of the home, including heating, lighting and security systems, and to give an interactive user experience. At the heart of this project is the Intel Galileo Gen 2 which runs a webserver giving the user full control of their home. The Galileo communicates with many subsystems using I2C, each controlling a separate feature of the home.

Ronan Watkins’ Data Gathering car can be controlled by a website or an Android app. The smartphone has control over the movements of the car, with the integrated accelerometer on the phone being used to control the steering of the car which uses a servo motor for more precise steering than a DC motor. The Galileo sends data from a temperature sensor, ultrasonic sensor and light dependent resistor to the smartphone and website and the user can then command the Galileo to post this data to Twitter. The car has a camera attached to it which streams to the website and can be instructed by the user to take pictures and save them to the SD card located on the Galileo and post them to Twitter.

Famous foodie launches Sligo Food Trail at gala event The Secret’s in the Mix!

ell known food writer and personality Aoife Carrigy, Chairperson of the Irish Food Writers’ Guild and a regular contributor to FOOD&WINE Magazine and the Irish Independent, launched the exciting new Sligo Food Trail on Wednesday 6th April. The gala launch event took place at The Model, Sligo and showcased the very best of all things culinary in Sligo. Sligo Food Trail is a brand new initiative drawing together more than 60 foodrelated highlights in County Sligo. It’s a ‘dip in and out’ trail so visitors can map their own route and choose the cuisine or food experience they love best along the Wild Atlantic Way. “We confidently expect Sligo Food Trail to be the most significant tourism initiative in the county this year”, stated chairman Anthony Gray of Eala Bhán and Trá Bán restaurants and president of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, “The trail aims to deliver tangible benefits for both Sligo and for the members, such as bigger visitors numbers, a greater spend on bed nights and products and increased employment. It will also give the visitor a great reason to linger longer in Sligo and the wider area. Sligo is ideally placed along the Wild Atlantic Way for visitors to enjoy the magnificent scenery and coastal experiences combined with the exciting food offerings which Sligo Food Trail provides”.

Speaking at the launch Aoife Carrigy talked about her own Sligo connections – her parents lived in Sligo back in the 1960s, and said “Sligo is slowly revealing its secrets to me. The county has a growing food reputation, much of this due to the wonderful food

ambassadors who work hard to build that reputation”. She spoke of the positive impressions made when she was a Foodie Towns judge and said, “Sligo has the confidence, depth and integrity to succeed, confident that it is OK to be true to its roots and simultaneously modern and contemporary. The link in all the food offerings and food experiences is the stylishness and the remarkable energy coming from all involved”. She concluded by saying it was no wonder people in Sligo have been eating well for 5,000 years! John Mulcahy, Head of Hospitality, Failte Ireland talked about the change in the food arena in Ireland over the last 10 years and said, “Sligo Food Trail is a signpost for the future – it is a result of the efforts of many.

You are going to do serious mileage with this venture.”

Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland is the founder of the Foodie Towns award and also spoke of the strong impression Sligo had made during the judging process. He asserted that “The day will come when Sligo is the number one foodie destination in Ireland”.

Also speaking at the launch was Dorothy Clarke, Director of Services, Sligo LEO who spoke of the importance of investing in such a venture, and said, “There could be further funding for initiatives such as this. We admire the ambition of Sligo Food Trail and will work with you to help it”. Sligo Food Trail

members are an exciting mix of producers, markets, cafes, restaurants, craft beer, gastro pubs and accommodation. The trail will introduce visitors and locals alike to the blend of food and cultural experience on offer. To encourage people to really engage with the wonderful landscape and local food, Sligo Food Trail features a series of ‘food experiences’.

These are anything from a craft beer tour (with tastings of course), a guided seashore walk to identify seaweeds and enjoy lunch on the seashore, to a pizza making workshop for kids.

The Sligo Food Trail video brings these food experiences to life, showcasing seaweed harvesting, foraging, afternoon tea treats, bread making, wine tasting and more.

Good food is nothing new in Sligo; in fact the name is derived from ‘Sligeach’ (meaning ‘a shelly place’) from the abundance of fresh shellfish along the coast, rivers and estuaries. In Culleenamore, there is evidence of shellfish being consumed by humans 5,000 years ago. Sligo Food Trail is the best introduction to this food lovers’ paradise, abundant in the fruits of this magnificent landscape and the wild Atlantic, served to you with pride.

Information on Sligo Food Trail is readily available through the website (www.sligofoodtrail.ie), social media and an attractive printed map/brochure combination.

The free map will be available in the Fáilte Ireland Tourist Information Offices. It will have full details of all members plus descriptions and booking details for the food experiences.

Hollywood composer returns to his native West of Ireland Composer and Claremorris native Patrick Cassidy returns to his home County for the Concert For Peace at Knock Basilica on Saturday May 14th.

T

he concert will feature an Elegy Suite for 1916 composed

by Patrick, and performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, conducted by David Brophy.

Patrick Cassidy expressed his delight in returning to Mayo and in particular to having his music performed in Knock Basilica with which he has strong connections.

The European premiere of his renowned Famine Remembrance Concert was performed in 2012 at St Colman’s Church, Claremorris to a

packed audience.

Now residing in Los Angels, Patrick came to prominence with the release of The Children of Lir, the first major symphonic work written in the Irish language, and Famine Remembrance, which was commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Hunger in Ireland. Currently, in addition to his concert work and compositions, he scores and collaborates on film and documentary projects which include

Missing Wright Brothers Patent Found In Cave

T

he pair made history on 17 December 1903 when they carried out the first controlled powered human flight.

The patent file for the Wright brothers' 'flying machine' missing since 1980 - has been discovered in a limestone cave.

A cold case team from the US National Archives recently ramped up its efforts to find the missing paperwork.

Record keepers realised the file was missing from the main Washington DC vault in 2000, and discovered that it had been potentially mislaid as far back as

1980.

But volunteer archivist Bob Beebe has now found it hidden among a 15ft-high stack of documents in a special records storage cave in Kansas.

The patent papers bear the names of Orville and Wilbur Wright and the words 'flying machine', the world's first successful plane.

The pair made history on 17 December 1903 when they carried out the first controlled powered human flight.

They filed the patent - which covers the machine's design and controls - nine months before their device even got off the ground, and it was granted in 1906.

National Archives boss William J Bosanko said: "If somebody puts something back in the wrong place, it's essentially lost.

"In this case, we didn't know.

We had to ask ourselves: 'Is it something that could have been stolen?'" The patent will go on display at the National Archives Museum in Washington DC later this month.

A number of key documents are missing from the National Archives - including the patent for Eli Whitney's cotton gin, photos from the Moon, and letters penned by Abraham Lincoln. Some are presumed stolen, while others were likely mislaid.

Cyclist Fined For Riding To Heathrow On M25 A cyclist who was trying to get to Heathrow airport by riding along the hardshoulder of the M25 has been handed an on-the-spot fine by police.

The rider, who appeared to be dressed in a white top and black trousers, was caught pedalling along the busy stretch of motorway on Thursday morning.

The person was seen on cameras in heavy morning traffic in the clockwise direction near junctions 12 and 13.

He did not reach his destination, though, he was escorted off the motorway by Surrey Police.

The police tweeted: "A cyclist has just received an on-the-spot fine after being caught cycling on the M25 trying to get to Heathrow", which has since been retweeted and favourited dozens of times.

Riding a bike on the motorway is illegal in the UK, and the Heathrow section of the M25 is one of the busiest stretches in Europe.

Last year, a Bulgarian cyclist was escorted off the M1 by police. He was attempting to ride to London after arriving on a flight at Luton Airport.

Thief Takes Wedding Ring From Corpse In Coffin CCTV footage has emerged of a woman stealing a wedding ring from the finger of a female corpse at a funeral home in Texas.

The dead woman, 88-year-old Lois Hicks, was lying in an open casket at Sunset Funeral Home in Odessa.

Her daughter, Vel McKee, told Odessa American online that some of the skin on her mother’s finger had been torn off during the theft.

“I can’t believe someone would be that low,” Ms McKee said.

“It makes me sick to my stomach.

“Horrible. I hope they catch her.” Ms Hicks’ granddaughter, Brandi Carrasco, told News West 9: "To go in and do that to someone is deplorable.

"We want our family jewellery back.

"My grandmother's finger was red," she added.

The funeral home’s general manager, Bill Vallie, said video showed the thief parking her four-door Saturn car, getting out and entering the building.

The vehicle’s licence plate can be seen in the video.

Ms Hicks’ loved ones had left shortly before, at around

5:30pm.

The woman asked where the toilets were but entered the room containing Ms Hicks’ coffin instead.

“You can’t restrict anyone,” Mr Vallie said.

While he admitted that taking jewellery from the dead at funeral homes is nothing new, he was shocked at how brazen it was.

“This is the first time this has happened,” he said.

Mr Vallie said the family intended to press charges.

The Odessa Police Department is investigating.

Rock Face Marriage Proposal Was A Cliffhanger

Paul Walker's Daughter Wins $10.1m Settlement The teenage daughter of Fast & Furious actor Paul Walker has been awarded a $10.1m (£7.15m) settlement from the estate of the man who was behind the wheel of the Porsche in which both men died.

Walker was a passenger in the Porsche Carrera GT driven by his friend Roger Rodas when the vehicle, travelling between 8093mph, crashed into trees and burst into flames in Santa Clarita, northwest of Los Angeles, in November 2013.

Meadow Walker's attorney, Jeff Milam, said in a statement that the settlement would go into a trust for the 17-year-old.

"The amount paid by the estate of Roger Rodas into a trust for Meadow Walker only covers a fraction of what her father would have earned as an international movie star had his life not tragically been cut short," Mr Milam said.

According to Mr Milam's statement, Mr Rodas was only partially responsible for the crash.

The settlement was reached in November 2014 but remained undisclosed until now.

Mr Milam said his client was continuing her lawsuit against Porsche AG and that she "intends to hold the company responsible for producing a vehicle that was defective and caused Paul Walker's death".

Meadow, the actor's only child and sole heir, filed the complaint against the German carmaker last September, accusing it of skimping on safety features that could have prevented the crash or at least kept him alive.

Porsche has maintained that the actor was responsible for his own death.

After a four-month investigation, Los Angeles officials said the crash was

caused by excessive speed, not mechanical failure.

Mr Milam said Walker survived the impact of the crash, but "burned to death because of Porsche's defective design".

A federal judge presiding over a similar lawsuit filed by Mr

Rodas' estate against Porsche ruled in favour of the car company on Monday, saying: "The plaintiff has provided no competent evidence that Rodas' death occurred as a result of any wrongdoing on the part of defendant."

Michael Banks thought he had dreamt up the perfect way to propose to his girlfriend.

The 27-year-old climbed 600 feet up Morro Rock in California, so that with the volcanic outcrop as a dramatic backdrop, he could pop the question on his computer via the Facetime App. The good news was that she said yes, but the bad news was he got stuck and had to be rescued from the mountainside by helicopter.

Morro Bay fire captain Todd Gailey said Mr Banks took a different, much steeper, trail down the cliff and became stranded.

"He couldn't go any direction, on a sheer ledge, with his feet dangling 80 feet off the ground," he said.

Captain Gailey was lowered by cable from a helicopter to hoist Mr Banks from the narrow ledge, with the rotors spinning near the cliff, and ocean spray battering both men.

Mr Banks appeared calm throughout the rescue, but also "a little unnerved", said Captain Gailey.

Climbing Morro Rock, which is on California's Central Coast, is banned, but some people still tackle it, and there have been several fatal falls over the years.

Local media said Mr Banks had been cited for trespassing, and he is expected to be charged for the helicopter ride.

It is unclear if Mr Banks had any second thoughts about making the proposal from the mountainside, but Captain Gailey said others should consider a place "where you're not in danger of falling off a cliff".

The kitchen has always been the heart of the home and where friends and family seem to congregate. Kathleen Lynn exhibition continues Ballina Arts Centre are delighted to be part of the highly anticipated Kathleen Lynn: Insider on the Outside exhibition which runs concurrently in five visual arts venues around Mayo; it is a creative investigation into the life and work of Kathleen Lynn by thirteen contemporary Irish artists. Born into an Anglo-Irish family in Mullafaghry, County Mayo in 1874, Kathleen Lynn went on to play a significant role in 1916. A medical doctor, active suffragette, labour activist and nationalist, Lynn was a member of the Irish Citizen Army and chief medical officer during the 1916 Easter Rising. Mayo Arts Collaborative sees 2016 as an opportunity to re-focus national attention on this extraordinary Mayo woman, her life and her work by championing her in the county of her birth. The project creates a cultural trail through the county, and both visitors and locals alike will be encouraged to engage with Lynn’s life and work in exhibition spaces in Belmullet, Ballycastle, Ballina, Castlebar and Westport. Runs until 30th April.

uicing is nothing new but this new craze of super juicing and raw foodies has recently become increasingly popular. So what is juicing? In essence, Juicing is simply removing the juice from whole fruits and vegetables. The fibre is broken

down in the fruit and vegetables ensuring that a rich supply of nutrients, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals are more easily absorbed by the body. Juicing can reduce your risk of cancer, boost your immune system, remove toxins from the body, aids digestion and helps with weight loss.

Virtually every health authority recommends that we get 6-8 servings of vegetables and fruits per day and very few of us actually get that. Juicing is an easy way to guarantee that you will reach your daily target.

Juicing provides versatility in fruit and vegetables because it helps people enjoy fruits and vegetables they might not usually enjoy in their whole form.

It can also balance the pH in our bodies, and in turn, help to protect us from conditions related to acidic imbalances, including heart and kidney disease and diabetes.

When starting out with juicing I would recommend a mid ranged price juicer. Start by juicing vegetables

and fruits you really enjoy. Juices should taste pleasant. Be adventurous with flavour combinations. I do not recommend a juicing-only weight loss plan because the lack of fibre and protein in juices often leaves u feeling hungry. Add juices to your normal daily food plan for maximum nutrient intake and health benefits.
