T is, perhaps, ironic that the landmark world conference on climate change is taking place in a week when the north-west of Ireland is experiencing its worst weather in 52 years. While it is agreed that something positive has to emerge from the Paris talks it is also imperative that lessons are learned here from the devastation following Storm Desmond. Towns and villages like Crossmolina, Ballylahan, Cong, The Neale, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, and Ballinasloe appear to be the worst hit, and there are road closures in Collooney/Ballisodare and between Ballymote and Gurteen in Sligo. As we go to press, with further rainfall expected later in the week and high tides on the way, Ballina is also under threat, particularly along Clare Street and Bachelor’s Walk. If the worst happens it appears, unfortunately, little can be done except to bring out the sandbags and work together to clear up the mess. The community spirit demonstrated in Crossmolina and other places over the weekend has been aptly described as heroic. But for how long can they keep doing it? They deserve some help, particularly from those charged with installing systems and infrastructure to protect them. Public representatives and community leaders pulled no punches in criticising the OPW for not taking some appropriate action to at least minimise the risks, particularly in areas with such a history of flooding. It is not acceptable that people in Crossmolina should be expected to run their businesses at such a risk in locations where they can’t get insurance. A row is also looming between business people and fishing interests in the area. Continued on Page 2

HE last weekend in November could yet prove to be an historical one for Ballina. A packed St. Patrick’s Church witnessed two of the world’s leading women’s rights activists, former president Mary Robinson and South Africa’s Graca Machel, share a stage to highlight some of the most important social and political issues of the day – just a taste of some of the high profile events locals can look forward to when the Mary Robinson Centre (to incorporate the former president’s archive) is officially opened in 2017. It was the second International Human Rights Lecture hosted by the Mary Robinson Centre. The current migrant crisis, social and

political unrest and climate change were highlighted in an event which was moderated by journalist/commentator Olivia O’Leary. The two high profile women had just come from a special workshop in the Newman Institute where they met many academics, students and migrants from all over the country. Earlier in the day when the two women met some members of the local and national press Mrs. Robinson recounted some of the memorable events during her presidency. She was scheduled to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her inauguration on December 3rd, on which date she would be in Paris, as UN Envoy for the historic world conference

on climate change. She vividly recalled her promise to the Irish people on that day in 1980 and her concerns over whether or not she could live up to it. This wasn’t helped a short time

later when the then Taoiseach, Charles J. Haughey presented her with a legal opinion that she was “doing too much”. She successfully challenged this of course and she actually praised Mr. Haughey for agreeing a budget which helped her to fulfil her commitment to a more open and involved presidency. The pendulum was now swinging to climate change and, according to Mrs. Robinson, the COP21 represented a last chance saloon to reach an agreement to secure the planet for the future. “Every child born today must live through this future”, she said. Commenting on some of the radical views that are precipitating so much violence today she noted that many of these people live in countries that don’t have the climate to readjust . . . and an appropriate response to climate change will be a positive driver towards political and social change. with widespread road closures, people waist-deep in water for days, loss of electricity for a weekend, forced to rely on the Red Cross for food and boat rides from the Civil Defence, in order to survive. Let’s hope it’s a wake-up call!

Ballina mourns for popular local man Widespread shock and disbelief permeates Ballina town and hinterland following news of the untimely death of Pearse Clarke on Friday evening last. In his late forties the talented and versatile man, best known for his involvement with the River Moy Search and Rescue Service, was a former employee of Western People where his mechanical skills were highly valued. His father, the well-known historian and

author, P. J., also worked with the newspaper for most of his life. He had just been honoured at the Mayo People of the Year Awards for his trojan efforts to remember and commemorate the many recruits from Mayo who had fought in WW1. A heart-broken P. J., speaking with North West Express last week, said it was such a traumatic week in the life of his family – from elation to the depths of despair.

in the Loft Bar in Ballina. All funds raised support Croí in their mission to prevent cardiovascular disease, save lives and promote health & wellbeing. Croí Nurse, Ailish Houlihan works throughout the county on the Mayo Action against Heart Disease & Stroke; delivering health initiatives, screening and awareness campaigns. The group volunteer their

time to organise various fundraisers each year around Ballina to support the work of Croí. Chairman of the Croí Friends Committee, Seamus Smyth, extended their sincere gratitude to all their volunteers in the Ballina district who carry out church gate collections, flag days and sell Christmas cards in aid of Croi. “The Croi Friends Ballina & District Committee would also like to thank the local community, their sponsors and donors and various businesses for their support, which helped the group achieve this huge success” he added. Irish Water Award for Westport Tidy Towns

he Tidy Towns Committee of Westport this week received a Value Water Award at the North and West Regional Tidy Towns Awards Ceremony 2015 which took place in Letterkenny. Irish Water, Ireland’s national water utility responsible for providing and developing water and wastewater services throughout Ireland, sponsored the Value Water Award, which recognises communities that have made a commitment to saving water. This is the first year the Value Water Award has been presented. Westport is one of four large towns across Ireland that won the Award in the Large Towns category. As part measures implemented in the town by the Tidy Towns Committee, all new planning applications must include rainwater harvesting, a new community building at ‘The Quay’ includes a rainwater harvesting system, an environmental awareness event held included water conservation talks and the display of water saving devices. Great Success for Sligo Sings

with the theatre and the choirmasters. Everyone within each workplace was then invited to join their choir. No previous choir experience was necessary. There were no auditions as Sligo Sings was not planned as a competition, but a celebration of the joy of singing together. Choirs came together from Sligo IT, The Department of Social Protection, Sligo Regional Hospital, Sligo Volunteer Centre, Sligo County Council along with The Markievicz Minstrels. The Hawk’s Well provided choral instruction workshops for local professional musicians and then appointed one to each choir. Dave Flynn, Niamh Crowley, Eunjoo Goh, Sinéad Conway, Aileen Concannon and Leonard Dorrian were appointed as choirmasters and were paid for 7 - 8 weeks rehearsals to prepare their choirs for the big performance in November. Each choir had seven weekly rehearsals with their choirmaster within their

ligo has just been granted the designation of European City of Volunteering for 2017 and the announcement has been warmly welcomed by Independent MEP Marian Harkin. Speaking in Lisbon on Friday, December 4th, where the announcement was made, she said that she was particularly delighted as she had proposed to Sligo County Council and Sligo Volunteer Centre that they should apply for the designation. “The top quality Sligo application was made by Sligo County Council, co-ordinated by Sligo Volunteer Centre and was a credit to all concerned. She continued:- “As Co-Chair of the Interest Group on Volunteering in the European Parliament I was instrumental in pushing for a European Year of Volunteer-

ing in 2011 from which the European City of Volunteering concept emerged”, she said. “Sligo is the fourth city to receive this designation, with Barcelona the first recipient in 2014, Lisbon in 2015 and London in 2016. “There were seven cities in the running for the 2017 designation including Belfast, London, Edinburgh, Bruges and Cagliari, however the work done on the ground in supporting volunteers, the track record of the County Council and the Volunteer Centre who work with voluntary groups throughout the county and the huge level and high quality of volunteer effort ensured that Sligo emerged on top for 2017. “This is a very prestigious award and it

reflects great credit on all Sligo volunteers and voluntary organisations. Their efforts now stand as best practice in the EU and we have just over 12 months to prepare to showcase and celebrate Sligo volunteering. “Today is a very proud day for me as a Sligo woman and a long term advocate for volunteering both at national and EU level. I am so delighted to see my own native county receive this acknowledgement for its very significant voluntary effort which was epitomised by the extremely successful engagement with Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in 2014 and 2015. This has been a great day for Sligo and a tribute to the volunteering effort of so many Sligo people over a long period of time”, Marian Harkin concluded.

ligo Sings - a fantastic community event celebrating the joy of singing took place at the Hawk's Well Theatre on Sunday 29th of November at 8pm. This ambitious initiative from the Hawk's Well developed 6 choirs from some of the busiest workplaces in the Sligo community over two months and celebrated their achievement in a spectacular performance at the theatre in front of a sold out audience. Feedback from the event has been outstanding and the team at the Hawk’s Well are delighted that their plan to get Sligo singing has come to fruition. In September 2015, the theatre put out an open call to businesses to get involved in this project and were astounded by the amazing response from businesses big and small, established choirs and people who just love to sing. The criteria was simple, each choir required a minimum of fifteen participants and each workplace appointed a choir coordinator, to work

workplace. They were also encouraged to keep singing between rehearsals, to sing together, sing at their desks - just keep singing! At first it was a little daunting for the choirs, having never sung together and also having to select and learn so many songs, but once they got started they soon relaxed and the laughter began. Along the way, the choir members had an opportunity to meet new colleagues, create new relationships, gain a new sense of wellbeing, relieve stress and have lots of fun! The choirs came together to celebrate their achievement in a performance for family and friends at the Sligo Sings evening in the Hawk’s Well theatre on Sunday, 29th of November. Accompanied by Sligo band Anything Goes, each choir performed two individual songs and then all six choirs, comprising over two hundred singers, joined together for the spectacular finale song – a version of Coldpplay’s Fix You, ending the night as one major Sligo Sings choir. The Hawk’s Well Theatre is delighted with the progress each choir has made in such a short period of time and hope that they continue to grow as choirs and continue to explore the joys of singing together. Marie O’Byrne, Director of the theatre commented: “This was such a joyous project to have produced. The vibe in the room last Sunday was unbelievable.” Jane Parsons, Project Manager for the Sligo Sings programme added “The Hawk’s Well is very much at the heart of the community. We have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this project, working with the choirs and choir coordinators to get Sligo singing and are delighted to have received such fantastic feedback from the participants.”

A recent survey of over 1,000 people by Orlando Health found that 31% felt that the biggest barrier to losing weight was a lack of exercise, while 26% blamed their diet. Some 17% blamed the costs associated with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, while 12% said they did not have enough time. Just one in 10 people felt that psychological wellbeing had a key role to play in weight loss. "This may explain why so many of us struggle," Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that from a very young age, people are emotionally attached to food. For example, as children, we may be given treats to console us when we are sad or reward us when we behave well. Furthermore, many annual celebrations, such as Halloween, Christmas and birthdays, are focused on food.

With 2016 just weeks away, a lot of people will make a New Year resolution to lose weight, however many will not achieve this and among those who do, the majority will regain the weight they lose. In fact, studies suggest that two-thirds of people who lose 5% of their total weight, gain it back, and the more weight a person loses, the lower their chances of keeping it off. However, according to Dr Diane Robinson, a neuropsychologist at Orlando Health, these figures are not surprising as most people focus on the physical aspects of losing weight, such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the emotional aspect. "There is an emotional component to food that the vast majority of people simply overlook and it can quickly sabotage their efforts. In order to lose weight and keep it off long-term, we need

That's not a bad thing necessarily, as long as we acknowledge it and deal with it appropriately," Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that when the brain experiences any type of pleasure, whether from food or something else, it reacts in the same way - the brain releases the neurotransmitter, dopamine, which is sometimes referred to as a ‘feel good chemical'. "We feel good whenever that process is activated, but when we start to put food into that equation and it becomes our reward, it can have negative consequences," she said. Studies have found a link between emotional issues, such as depression and stress, and a higher body mass index (BMI). For example, some people turn to food when they are feeling low. Dr Robinson offers the following tips to help people recognise the emotional connection they may have to food: -Keep a diary every day, writing down the food you eat and your mood at the time of eating. Look for unhealthy patterns -Identify foods that make you feel good and write down why you eat them. For example, are you eating them because you feel stressed or do they evoke a certain memory -Before you eat anything, ask yourself whether you are eating it because you are hungry. If you are not actually hungry, look for the root of your motive. Dr Robinson said that the main aim is to view eating as providing nourishment, not as a reward or coping mechanism. "If getting your body in shape hasn't work out yet, maybe this time start with your mind," she added.

Creative’ Niall Is Best Young Entrepreneur Finalist 2015 The 21-year-old says his third level education has given him the essential skills towards the approach required for designing his new creation. “I previously worked with medical companies as part my course - and this created an interest in the medical sector,” says Niall. 1,400 young Irish entrepreneurs, all aged between 18 and 30, participated in the 2015 ‘Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur’ competition, which is being run by the Local Enterprise Offices in the Local Authority Network. Niall recently won both the Donegal and

Regional finals and is now one of 24 finalists from 17 counties to be selected for the national final at Google’s European Headquarters in Dublin in December. The nationwide competition forms part of the Action Plan for Jobs, with a total €2million fund available to county winners and overall national winners, who each can win a total of up to €70,000 investment in their business.

An IT Sligo student, who has invented a new device aimed at revolutionising the way patients recover from bowel surgery, has been shortlisted for Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Awards 2015. Niall McGonigle, from Bundoran in County Donegal, is a final year Creative Design student at the Institute. He is also the founder of McGonigle Industries, based in Donegal, which designs advanced medical products. Niall’s latest idea has been shortlisted for the ‘Best New Business Idea’ category, and is based on a device to help patients cope with bowel cancer.

news he mayor of Sligo, Cllr Thomas Healy hosted an official reception for the Sligo branch of Samaritans. The branch are celebrating 30 years since their foundation after a meeting in the then Silver Swan on April 8th, 1985. The reception took place in

City Hall, Quay Street and was attended by volunteers from the local branch and dignitaries who shared in the celebrations. At the reception, Cllr Thomas Healy was full of praise for volunteers who had endeavoured to help others 24 hours a day and for 365 days of

the year. In his speech the Mayor said, "The lights at Samaritans branch on the Mall remain on throughout the night, as lights go out in homes across the country. The lights at the branch on number 3 The Mall serve as a beacon of hope to

those who may have nowhere else to turn and a s a reminder to the dedication of those who volunteer". Presentations were then made by the Mayor to six volunteers who have been active and integral parts of the branch, since its foundation 3 decades ago. Current director of the local branch, Anne Cummins, thanked the mayor and those in attendance for their kinds words. She spoke about the support from the people of Sligo which had given strength to volunteers and helped to keep the branch open. Anne also reminded those in attendance, the reception was to honour all those who had volunteered over the years, both past and present. The Sligo branch of Samaritans wished to thank all those in attendance and those who extended kind words to volunteers throughout the year as they celebrated their 30th anniversary. Samaritans also extended a sincere thank you to the people of Sligo for their ongoing support for the last three decades which in turn has helped volunteers to help others."

A MAYO pharmacist scooped one of the top awards at this year’s annual Helix Health Pharmacist Awards. Tom Treacy from Treacy’s Pharmacy, James St in Westport was bestowed with the Excellence in Community Practice Award which is sponsored by Lundbeck for “going out of his way to provide practical help, care and reassurance, that one needs when experiencing illness and difficulties and for his extraordinary compassion”. Mr Treacy was one of nine pharmacists honoured at last night’s annual Helix Health Pharmacist Awards, which aim to celebrate pharmacy and

Colman Collins, who has now sold his shareholding, co-founded the company, which has offices in Dublin, Galway, Athlone, Sligo and Cork, 25 years ago. The MBO team comprises three senior members of the management team – Niall Murray (who set up the Sligo office) Sligo woman Antoinette O’Flaherty and Galway woman Michelle Murphy. Mark Zuckerberg and wife mark birth of baby by giving away 99pc of Facebook's $45bn fortune

Through the venture, Zuckerberg and Chan have already donated $120m to support education in underserved communities in San Francisco; $75m to the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital; $25m to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fight Ebola and $100m to the Newark Public School System. The couple's latest proposals include personalised learning via technology, preventing diseases and giving everyone in the world access to the internet. Man Who Hid 51 Turtles In Trousers Faces Jail

A man who was caught at a US border crossing with 51 turtles taped underneath his trousers has admitted smuggling charges involving more than 1,000 of the reptiles. Kai Xu ordered the turtles online and would travel to Michigan to take them back to his home in Canada, or

ship them to China. The 27-year-old pleaded guilty on Tuesday to six offences in a federal court in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Prosecutors said Xu's "staggering" turtle shipments could earn him between $30,000 (£20,000) and $125,000. Xu had been under surveillance in the weeks leading up to his arrest near Detroit in September 2014. Wildlife agents observed him collecting a box at a United Parcel Service facility

before disappearing behind some lorries only to emerge with "irregularly shaped bulges" under his tracksuit bottoms. Xu was stopped by Canadian border authorities as he drove back to Ontario with the 51 reptiles taped to his legs, including box turtles and terrapins. Reptiles had also been hidden in shipments of corn flakes and boots, the court was told. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.

A Massachusetts woman has won $1m from a lottery scratch card - for the second time. Constance Carpenito recently scooped the prize on the $10,000,000 Diamond Millionaire instant game. She also won $1m on another scratch card back in 1996, according to the Massachusetts Lottery. As if that wasn't enough, Ms Carpenito previously won $20,000 on the game. All three lucky tickets were bought at the Stop & Shop supermarket in her hometown of Stoneham. Ms Carpenito said she buys $20 in lottery tickets every week. She said she plans to spend her most recent winnings on Christmas gifts for her family.

'Monster' Brussels Sprouts As Big As Golf Balls

Brussels sprouts as big as golf balls are hitting supermarket shelves thanks to higher temperatures this year in the UK. Weighing 35g - more than twice the average - and 4cm wide, they are being dubbed "monster sprouts". This will be good news for fans of the vegetable ahead of Christmas dinner in less than a month's time. Some experts say larger ones could be chopped in half to aid the cooking process, and they could be roasted or boiled during the festive period. Sprout farmer John Clappison, from Beverley in Yorkshire, told Sky News: "We've had lots of lovely sun this summer, plenty of rain and then we've had a nice mild autumn and the crop has grown really, really well." Some people love sprouts, while others hate them - but Mr Clappison says their flavour has sometimes been altered to make them more appealing. He said: "The modern varieties have been bred to be a sweeter, more palatable taste for the younger generation." He added: "Various people say there is a genetic follow through in people - some people either can't stand them or love them. "I know many people who love them and I think too many people have the idea that 'I don't like sprouts' but then when they try them they actually really do like them."

10 tips to save on your heating bill this winter G

etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check?

That’s why we love this ‘De-aerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99 6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator

into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder from Amazon. It fits snugly around the door and it can be cut to shape. Cost: €6.99 8. Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling. 9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the roomturn it off when it has the job done.
