HE 26th February is General Election day, when the electorate gets an opportunity to have its say, to give its verdict on those who have guided our country over the past five years, and, hopefully, select a government to steer a path to 2020 and beyond. From a democratic perspective election day is a great leveller . . . when we exercise a fundamental constitutional right. Full credit to the election candidates, too! it takes a degree of courage to place their names on the ballot paper in the first place. We have an outgoing government who, on the face of it, have done a reasonable job in turning the economy around after the worst recession in recent history . . . and if there’s any credence to “it’s the economy stupid” as a winning political mantra the Fine Gael/Labour “arrangement” should be coasting to victory. However, the unfortunate fact is that many people in Ireland still don’t feel the economic recovery, which is most pronounced in Dublin, and in certain areas of the capital, at that. Unemployment and emigration remain sad realities in rural Ireland. A drive through some provincial towns will reveal lots of boarded up shop fronts and a dearth of activity. The way the government have implemented the bail-out programme has alienated large sections of the electorate. Consequently, the situation has given birth to a number of smaller parties and a plethora of independents, with various views on the best way forward. The coalition contends that “stability” is what’s needed and they are best equipped to continue the recovery; they also say there is no credible alternative. Continued on Page 2

he academic achievements of IT Sligo’s international students were recognised last Friday at a special ceremony in the Institute’s Hume Hall. 44 students from the countries of Oman, Libya and Cyprus were presented with their International Foundation Programme awards This one-year special purpose award provides a direct pathway for international students to an IT Sligo degree programme. It enables them to acquire the

knowledge, skills and competence required to successfully participate and embark on a degree alongside their Irish counterparts. “It was a lovely occasion for us,” said Al Mundhir Al-Siyabi, one of the Institute’s Omani students who is also a Graduation in Ireland student ambassador. “Moving to a country either to study or to get a job was something I’ve always wanted to achieve and IT Sligo has offered me a great education.” In his conferring address,

the Registrar of IT Sligo Colin McLean described the graduating students as excellent ambassadors not just for their own countries but also for the Institute. “Beyond your academic achievements to date, one of the most striking and impressive qualities has been your ability and willingness to immerse yourselves in the local culture and language,” he said. “Your community engagement chimes perfectly with the ethos of IT Sligo. We strive to help nurture and

produce rounded graduates.” Although the students have completed their Foundation Programme, they are continuing their studies at IT Sligo across a range of Level 7 courses. These include: Medical Biotechnology, Systems and Networking, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Business, and Architectural Design. There are currently 57 Omani students studying at IT Sligo. Oman provides the largest single non-EU nationality on our campus.

Filan calls for minimum mandatory sentencing guidelines

S

ligo-based RENUA Ireland's candidate Finbarr Filan feels that the current

and Wales, the English Criminal Justice Act 2003 provides that where a court imposes a life sentence, it must make an order regarding the minimum term to be served by the offender before he or she may be considered for release by the Parole Board. Where the court is of the opinion that because of the seriousness of the offence, no such order should be made, it must order that the early release provisions are not to apply to the offender. Currently in Ireland, the average “life sentence” is a mere 17 years. This does not reflect in anyway the real life sentence

average life sentence for serious crime such as murder at a mere 17 years is totally unacceptable . In his opinion, as part of restoring an appropriate balance to how we deal with criminals this has to change. Where an offender is convicted of murder, and is therefore sentenced to life imprisonment, Mr Filan states that RENUA Ireland will introduce legislation to provide that the judge may recommend a minimum term to be served by the offender. Serious crime must be seen to be treated seriously. This is no longer the case. He points out that in England

that families and friends suffer after losing their loved ones to murder. Unease is also growing amongst Irish citizens over the leniency of sentencing when it comes to crimes such as rape and sexual abuse. RENUA Ireland will demand that minimum mandatory sentencing guidelines be applied in such cases too. The spectacle where defendants hope that a sufficient payment of compensation will mitigate sentencing is not appropriate in a modern justice system. The law must ensure that chance is replaced by scientific rigour in such cases.

Warning over election posters Mayo County Council’s road safety officer has issued an appeal to those contesting the General Election when erecting their election posters. Noel Gibbons said last week: “With high winds forecast we have urged candidates not to hang banners and posters from road bridges and pedestrian bridges, as they could become loose, be interfered with by a third party, and could fall onto fast-moving traffic. Driver distraction has a negative impact on road safety and so only essential signage should appear. “There is a safety issue connected to the erection and removal of posters etc, particularly those which are inappropriately sited, also for personnel erecting the posters to wear Hi Viz clothing”. He continued: “A build-up of election material can often have a negative visual impact

on the general amenity of roads with possible safety implications for drivers and pedestrians. Traffic and road signs are specifically designed to be clearly read by passing road-users. “Those erecting posters near junctions should ensure they are not blocking road users’ sightlines. Election candidates tend to place their posters in areas which are crucial to road users such as on roundabouts, statutory road signs, directional signs, traffic light poles, Stop or Yield signs or other crucial areas.” Mr. Gibbons believes this can be a problem for road users if not erected with road safety in mind. He understood that candidates needed to get their posters out there and in the best possible locations, but they should also have consider the road safety aspects of the exercise.

Bidding for a Hare...from Dromahair! “The Elemental Hare” designed by Dromahairbased artist Rachel Webb is part of “Hares on the March” campaign to raise money for sick children supported by the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. “The Elemental Hare” standing 3 foot and made of

Carrick’s Orla rewarded for life-saving action

Orla McNabola pictured with Miriam O’Callaghan and other local community members.

A

17-year-old girl from Carrick-onShannon won a National Recognition Award for her CPR practice which saved a man's life last April. Orla McNabola was awarded the Special Merit Award at the Local Authority Members association Awards on Saturday, January 30. When 76-year-old Johnny Martin suffered

ventricular fibrillation on April 24, 2015 the Carrick-on-Shannon Community School student was one of the people instrumental in saving Mr. Martin’s life. He had collapsed hitting his head and the incident resulted in his heart stopping. Said Orla: “I was in Subway and one of my friend's little sisters had been in

Francesco's and saw Johnny collapse. I went down to Francesco's thinking 'I wonder will they need help with CPR?' “So I went down on the off-chance and saw Johnny through the glass. I ran in and told the two ladies who were working in the shop that I could help.” Orla, who is a part time Lifeguard at Aura Leisure Centre and trained in CPR, was familiar with the workings of a defibrillator. She worked on Mr Martin until a defibrillator was delivered by Rosie Dolan and Brenda Dunne who were also trained to use the defibrillator. Orla's CPR procedure was essential along with the defibrillator in keeping Mr Martin's heart working until the ambulance arrived on the scene. Councillor Finola ArmstrongMcGuire who was very “impressed” by Orla's actions. "She is a young girl and for her to kneel down beside someone she did not know and administer CPR in front of older people, her friends and strangers took a lot of courage and strength" she said The judges were so impressed with the heroic actions of the local student they awarded her a Special Merit Award. This is presented to a person or project that deserves recognition in their own right. It is for the person or project that goes above and beyond within their community to improve the lives of others and the community. Orla has started her Mock Leaving Cert exams in Carrick on Shannon Community School this week.

Jenny Brady’s “Gallery Talk” at Ballina Civic Offices

A

s part of the 30 Years, Artists, Places Exhibition at Ballina Civic Offices there will be an extensive education and outreach programme with schools visits and workshops, as well as a Gallery Talk by Jenny Brady, whose video piece ‘The Known World’ features in the exhibition. The Gallery Talk will take place on Friday 12th February at 7pm. Jenny will talk about ‘The Known World’, as well as about her ongoing practice. ‘The Known World’ is an experimental nature documentary with voiceover, tracing the relationship of swan to notions of ‘uncertainty and doubt’. Described as ‘concerned with the fragility of knowledge’, the video presents a natural history of transition and change. Using images of Lough Lannagh, in Castlebar, and the family of Mute Swans that live on it, the work operates in the space between documentary and fiction. Its protagonist reveals a world where reality is a constantly evolving set of ideas. The piece was commissioned by Mayo County Council for Landmark, a public art programme for Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. Jenny Brady works with the moving image to explore ideas around speech, translation and the nature of communication. She completed an MA in Visual Arts Practices in IADT in 2010 and recent presentations include: Videonale 15, (Kunstmuseum Bonn); Roadkill (IMMA); Pallas Periodical Review #4 (Pallas Projects / Ormston House); Wade-In curated by Chris Clarke (Eastern Edge Gallery / Lewis Glucksman gallery), EVA International 2014 curated by Bassam El Baroni; Images Festival 2014 (Toronto); Futures ’13 (RHA); TULCA Golden Mountain 2013, curated by Valerie Connor; and Make-Shift (Talbot Rice Gallery) curated by Modern Edinburgh Film School. 30 Years, Artists, Places is presented by Ballina Arts Centre in partnership with the Local Authority Arts Officers Association, with support from the County and City Managers Association. The exhibition is being funded by an Arts Council Touring Award and was curated by Muireann Ní Chonaill, Laois Arts Officer.

Ireland baking along the Wild Atlantic Way. The awards were presented in Dublin Castle on Sunday night and Glen Keen Farm was joined by other Mayo winners Ashford Castle and Hotel Westport. Ashford Castle in Cong was voted the best visited hotel in Connacht while Hotel Westport also won a top award. The coveted awards were

presented by the CIE Chairman, Vivienne Juppo, when it was revealed that the visitors carried by CIE Tours International generated revenues of €83 million in Ireland last year. The company brought 44,000 visitors to Ireland during the past year. Awards of Excellence were presented to 98 outstanding hotels and visitor attractions spread right around the country. While the Glen Keen Farm was a visitor highlight, other highlights included the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle and the Skellig Experience which features in the latest ‘Star Wars’ movie. The Managing Director of CIE Tours International, Brian Stack, told the gathering: ‘Last year was another strong year when our 44,000 customers booked in the region of 350,000 bed nights. They made a major contribution to Ireland’s record year for tourism when 8 million tourists visited our country.” Mr Stack said bookings with CIE Tours International for this year have been going well and that the company is looking forward to exceeding 2015 levels of tourism.

Man Threw Alligator Into Restaurant Drive-Through

J

oshua James, 23, allegedly hurled the three-and-a-half foot reptile after ordering a drink at a restaurant in Loxahatchee. A Florida man has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he threw a live alligator through the drive-through window of a Wendy's restaurant. Joshua James, 23, pulled up to place an order at the restaurant in Loxahatchee and after the server handed him a drink and turned around, he threw the three-and-half foot reptile through the serving window, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) officials said.

His mother told WPTV that her son was not violent and claimed the incident was part of a joke aimed at a friend who worked in the restaurant. She told the TV station: "He's a prankster. He does stuff like this because he thinks it's funny." James was arrested this week by US Marshals over the incident, which took place in October last year. He is also accused of unlawful possession and transportation of an alligator. The FFWCC told WPTV that James admitted capturing the reptile on Southern Boulevard and bringing it to the fast food restaurant. The alligator was later released into a nearby canal.

Pilot Who Flew £33m Of Cocaine Into UK Jailed

A

ndrew Wright, whose "Biggles" nickname was inspired by the fictional adventurer, ferried Class-A drugs from Germany to Yorkshire. A pilot who smuggled cocaine worth £33.5m into the UK on his light aircraft has been sentenced to 19 years in prison. Andrew Wright, who was nicknamed "Biggles", imported 268kg of the Class-A drug on eight trips over a three-month period in 2014. The 52-year-old was using an aerial photography business to cover up his drug trafficking. Mark Dowling, who concocted the scheme, was jailed for 24 years - while his right-hand man, Jamie Williams, received a 23-year sentence at the Old Bailey. Judge Nicholas Cooke QC told the three men their smuggling crimes were "off the scale" and of "exceptional seriousness". Wright had taken his nickname from the fictional aviator and adventurer - and he would fly each drug haul from Germany to Breighton Airfield in North Yorkshire after

Williams had collected the cocaine from Holland. Their smuggling ring was smashed after a border control officer met Wright on his arrival to the UK in November 2014. Four bricks of cocaine were discovered in the boot of a Porsche Cayenne, with 30 more blocks found in the plane's tail section. The court heard how the cocaine had a street value of £4.25m. Police only fully learned of the plot's sophistication when they searched Dowling's home and found documents which proved they were generating large sums of money and had nearly £2m at their disposal. The pilot was being paid £1,500 for every kilogram he imported to the UK - while Williams, who would drive the drugs from Holland to an airport in Germany, was charging a flat rate of £12,000 plus expenses. Both men had pleaded guilty to their part in the smuggling plot - and Williams was also sentenced for unrelated firearms, drugs and

money laundering offences. Dowling had admitted to separate charges of transferring criminal property, cannabis and cocaine supply, and possessing criminal property. During mitigation, the court was told Wright had "taken the eye off the ball" of his once legitimate aerial photography business and had suffered financial difficulties after his wife's son was killed in a road crash. Although the judge noted the personal tragedy, he said he had to bear in mind how cocaine can also ruin lives, and explained how his sentence was designed to deter other pilots from getting involved in similar schemes. Detective Constable Pete Wakefield, of North Yorkshire Police's Special Branch, said: "Although people may think that we are a quiet, rural county this case goes to show that serious and organised crime does happen here and Wright's arrest prevented a large quantity of Class A drugs making it onto the streets."

Google Chief Now Highest-Paid Boss In America Sundar Pichai's pay deal is worth more than the £130m ($187m) Google boss Sundar Pichai is now the highestpaid chief executive in America after being awarded $199m (£138m) of shares.

He became chief executive in October after its reorganisation into holding company Alphabet, and was given 273,328 shares, according to a company filing. It is more than the £130m ($187m) Google

has agreed to pay the UK government in back taxes since 2005. The award takes his total Alphabet holding to around $650m (£450m) - yet even this figure falls way short of the net worth of Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They are worth around $34bn each, according to Forbes. And Google's former chief executive, Eric Schmidt, holds shares worth around $3bn. Mr Pichai's award will vest in quarterly increments until 2019. The 43-year-old was recently seen at Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco, where he posted a photo of himself on Twitter meeting NFL legend Ronnie Lott. Alphabet's chief financial officer, Ruth Porat, was given shares worth around $38m on top of the $30m signing bonus she got after leaving Morgan Stanley last year. And Google cloud computing boss Diane Greene was awarded shares worth $42.8m, on top of around $150m she was given when Google bought Bebop Technologies - the company she founded.

Family Rescued After Sinkhole Swallows Car

A crane is deployed to get the car out of the hole, which is thought to have been caused by heavy rain, in Peru. A sinkhole has swallowed a car with an entire family inside. Emergency teams in Peru had to rescue them from the sinkhole, which was around five metres wide and three metres deep, using ropes. A crane was later deployed to retrieve the vehicle. No one appears to have been injured in the incident, which is believed to have been caused by heavy rain.

Man dies during Krispy Kreme challenge

A man has died while taking part in a Krispy Kreme running challenge. Jeff Woods, 58, is believed to have suffered a heart attack while running to a Krispy Kreme shop. The challenge involves running 2.5 miles to the shop, eating 12 doughnuts, then running back to the start line. However, Mr Woods stopped because of chest pains before collapsing a mile into the race in Raleigh, North Carolina. Race organisers said in a statement: ‘Unfortunately we have some sad news to share. We regretfully confirm that a participant of today’s Krispy Kreme Challenge has died. ‘A 58-year-old male stepped out of the race within the first mile and reported having chest pains. He was transported by EMS to Rex Hospital where he was pronounced dead. ‘We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.’

Home Energy Tips That Save You Money E

nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. As the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment. Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energysaving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill

a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water.

you make a choice, "A" being the most efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy.

Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows.

Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy.

Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day.

Fridges/Freezers

These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth

shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply. Insulation Upgrading loft and, where possible, cavity insulation, will save energy in your home by reducing energy losses through the building fabric.

Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing machines, opt for a more energy efficient appliance. An EU Energy Label should be displayed (A to G Scale) on appliances for sale in order to help

C

hoosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task. It really doesn't have to be. Back in my wedding coordinator days i always advised brides and grooms-to-be to arrive armed with some information. This allowed me, as the wedding coordinator, to tailor the information to provide so as not to overwhelm the couple. You don’t need to have a 100% or even 20% visualisation of the day you want but there are a few essentials that are important to know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date: Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea of what you feel you are willing to

spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue: You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Marquee, Glamping, Restaurant

and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on your abroad location as there are some excellent destination

planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see if you can add your personal touch to it. 8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your chosen venue. If there have been issues, you will be aware so that

you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. If it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

A month by month checklist to plan your perfect wedding.

need, including marquee, chairs, tables, etc, and book a caterer.

12 months Ideally, planning should begin 12 months before the big day. Decide on the style of wedding you want. Booking your reception venue is a priority. Book reception entertainment/musicians/DJ. If you’re employing a wedding consultant/planner, choose a professional with a good reputation. You’ll be spending a lot of time together, so be sure that you select a person you can get along with.

10 months Choose your cake maker and cake design. Confirm the menu with the reception venue. You’ll have given plenty of thought to your wedding outfits, and those of your attendants. Make your final decision. Allow at least six months for a made-tomeasure dress to be completed. Start looking for accessories. If you are hiring formal wear for male members of the party place your order. Choose your wedding ring(s).

11 months Book your photographer and/or videographer. If the ceremony is to be held in a church, synagogue, mosque or other religious building, check that you will be permitted to take photographs or film there. Choose your attendants, best man and ushers and get the wedding date firmly in their diaries. If you’re holding your reception in a marquee on your own land, reserve all the equipment you will

9 months If you have made a final decision on your dress, your bridesmaids’ dresses and the general theme, choose your florist and organise bouquets and buttonholes, and flowers for the church or reception. If you’re marrying in church, check that it is appropriate for you to decorate the church (the ladies who normally decorate the church might do it for you by special

arrangement), and confirm with the reception venue whether or not they are including floral decoration as part of the package. If you’ve set your heart on a particular honeymoon, book it early to avoid disappointment. If you’re undecided, start browsing the brochures and book as soon as you’ve made your choice. Remember that exotic destinations may require vaccinations and that some courses of vaccinations or drugs must start several weeks before you leave (and continue after your return). Book your flight ticket in the name on your passport. Organise your gift list.

them if necessary. Some countries will deny entry if your passport is close to expiry.

8 months If you’re arranging a church wedding, chat to the vicar and/or organist about music. Discuss possible dates for a rehearsal, if required, and finalise the form of the service and the readings prior to having the invitations and order of service printed. If you’re having a civil wedding, choose any readings that you wish to include in the service. Send copies of your chosen readings to the person you have asked to read, so that they can practice.

5 months If you aren’t spending your wedding night at your reception venue, book accommodation. Either make bookings for guests (remember you will probably be able to negotiate a reduced rate for a block booking) or give them a list of local hotels/guest houses to make their own bookings. 4 months Confirm that everything you have booked so far is on course and that all friends and family involved in the arrangements are sure of their role. If the stationery hasn’t arrived, chase it up. Give the caterers your estimated number of guests.

7 months Have another look at your provisional guest list. Order your stationery, which includes invitations, place-cards, orders-of-service, thank-you notes, napkins, matchbooks, favours, little boxes for posting wedding cake, etc. Start looking for clothes for your honeymoon. Check the expiry date of your passports and renew

6 months Book your wedding transport or make firm arrangements with family and friends about lifts or borrowing vehicles. Arrange reliable back-ups. Buy gifts for best man, attendants, etc. As soon as you have your veil, tiara or other head-dress, make an appointment with your hair stylist to discuss and try various styles. Visit beauty salons/make-up counters to discuss and try ideas.

3 months Send out the invitations and keep an up-to-date list of refusals and acceptances. Send out your thank-you notes for gifts as they arrive and keep a record of who has given what.

2 months Try on all your wedding clothes. If you are unhappy with anything, take action now. If you have left anything to others to organise, check that they have done it. Confirm your honeymoon booking. Check whether you need visas. Arrange foreign currency if necessary. Work out a seating plan for the reception. Arrange your hen and stag nights or delegate the task to your chief bridesmaid and best man. Do not hold either the night before the wedding. 1 month In all the hustle and bustle of wedding preparations, don’t forget each other. Make time for each other and if you can, don’t discuss wedding preparations. Buy each other little gifts and remember why you’re doing this. Make a plan of timings for the day and distribute a copy to everyone concerned. Make enquiries about any other events being held on the same day that might create traffic delays. If you will be moving into a new home after the wedding, arrange forwarding of post and any important changes of name. Buy a guest book to place at the reception so your friends and relatives can record messages. Delegate tasks to your friends and relatives. Make sure that somebody has your handbag, make-up, hairbrush, tissues, etc, handy, and a large umbrella in their car/in the vestry just in case. Write your speech(es). Enjoy your hen and stag nights. The planning should be over by now and it’s time to unwind, relax and look forward to the big day.

ids just love a wedding. It’s probably more to do with the dressing up than anything else, but even the most cherubic loses interest fairly quickly, so you need to come up with a sure-fired remedy to keep them sweet. Professional

crèches are the perfect solution. Trained individuals will arrange everything needed to keep the little darlings happy, and you’ll know they’re in a safe and secure environment, while you party on. Planning a wedding is all about de-

cisions, and one of the trickiest is whether or not to invite children. You have to decide on this one fairly early in the planning, since the presence of children might affect your choice of venue, and will definitely affect your numbers and budget.

If you’ve got a clutch of child attendants to accompany you down the aisle, have young children of your own or the day wouldn’t be complete without the sound of children - both happy and unhappy - then you’ve already made the decision. If, on the other hand, you’re apprehensive at the thought of children’s voices possibly interrupting your ceremony, and you don’t much like the idea of them frolicking around at your reception, you have to run the risk of upsetting some of your friends by excluding children from the guest list. Hopefully everyone will understand that it’s your day, and not take offence. It will probably be the case that many of your guests - and even some parents - will be pleased rather than upset, though you may lose a few who can’t arrange suitable care or are nursing young babies. If children are to be included on the guest list, you can minimise possible problems. It’s quite acceptable for ushers to have a quiet word with guests with young children, requesting they sit at the back of the church or civil venue and take their child out if it becomes noisy. This should decrease the risk that you’ll have to listen to little Emily or Jack’s crying every time you listen to your wedding video over the following 50 years.

The intro You need to introduce yourself, but it doesn’t have to be reminiscent of an AA meeting. Tell them your name and maybe crack a small joke to make yourself feel relaxed. The welcome Make a formal welcome to

The toast Finish up by asking everyone to stand and raise a glass to the happy couple. No doubt, the best man will do something similar at the end of his speech too, but it’s the traditional way to close yours. Top tips for making it fun The father of the bride might be a mature gentleman, but that doesn’t mean your speech has to be dull. Here are some top tips to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved…

Timing is everything At many weddings, fathers of brides have been known to drone on for some time, and that’s only fair. However, to keep things fun, engaging and avoiding Aunty Doreen falling asleep in her soup, aim for a speech that lasts around six to seven minutes in total. Read your speech through at your normal speaking pace to gauge how long this really is. Keep it clean Jokes are a great way to break the ice and loosen up the crowd, but don’t be too focused on being funny. You’re the elder statesman of the speakers today, so you can afford to be a bit more conservative in your words. That doesn’t mean you have to be full though; a few jibes at the expense of the wedding or your daughter’s love of spending money are fine, just don’t go too close to the bone. Leave it to the best man to really roast up the groom, and focus on welcoming your new son-in-law to the family and toasting the happy couple. Hold on to your emotions This is such a big occasion for you and all your family, it can be easy to get caught up in the emotion of it all. Do you best to keep things light and happy, as nobody likes to see

a grown man in tears. If there are some personal things you would like to say to your daughter, but don’t want to include in your speech, write them down for her to read on the day instead. The last word Ask any public speaker what their biggest fear is, and they’ll pretty much always say it’s forgetting where they are in their speech. Fumbling over your words and getting a bit lost is nothing to be ashamed of, provided you can make a quick recovery and get back on track okay. Take your speech on cue cards with bullet-pointed reminders of what you want to talk about, rather than printing it all out in full. This will give you a more natural delivery, and will save you having to read through several paragraphs to find your place after getting lost.

If you do get stuck, use a moment to clear your throat, take a drink of water or give your daughter a kiss. These moments might seem a lifetime to you, but will feel like a natural pause to your audience, and will give you the breathing space you need to get things back on track. Take your time, don’t panic and try to enjoy your moment of fame.

Guitar genius Preston Reed at the Linenhall Contemporary guitar visionary Preston Reed weaves his musical magic at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 25th February at 8.00pm. One of the most influential guitarists of the past quarter-century, Preston Reed invented “integrated percussive guitar playing” in the late 1980s, revolutionising the way the acoustic guitar is played and inspiring generations of musicians around the world ever since, including many of today’s top players such as Andy McKee and Jon Gomm. Blending multi-voiced grooves, soaring melodies and polyrhythmic percussion within story-telling compositions, Reed's visionary approach fully exploits the orchestral potential of the acoustic guitar. From his roots in blues, rock, funk and jazz to explorations in Middle Eastern and neo-classical styles, Reed's music embraces familiar sounds in a fresh and original way. His jaw-dropping skill and unrivalled musical creativity make for a mind-blowing live performance not to be missed. “… widely thought of as the world’s most gifted guitarist.” - Total Guitar “Spectacular… A terrific performer.” - The Irish Independent “Remarkable…. Five reasons most diets fail W

e’ve all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It’s frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure. But it doesn’t have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an American based obesity expert and the author of The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work. “If there was a quick fix we’d all be skinny,” he points out. “The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be.” So what’s preventing us from getting there?

1. We think dieting has to be painful

2.We under-eat

“The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about suffering,” says Dr. Freedhoff. “It suggests that people struggling with their weight don’t deserve to eat like normal people or use food for comfort and celebration. Instead they’re only supposed to use food for fuel and shut off the other normal uses. This doesn’t work.”

Trying to starve yourself into thinness doesn’t work either. “Hunger is a very powerful physiological force,” says the diet doctor. “It’s second only to breathing for survival. To think we can fight 100 million years of evolution which has made our bodies really good at securing calories simply because we want to get into a particular clothing size is folly.”

4.We eat out too often and consume too much processed food

3. We over-exercise “People undertake exercise regimes that are truly ‘regimes’,” he says. “People see these shows on TV where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it’s a life sentence.” People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they’re burning, which can lead to frustration. “As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly,” he says. “That’s why gyms are busy in January and empty in March.”

“We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day.”

Westport, Co. Mayo

Chiropodist: Martin Mc Nally Tel: 087 222 6260

5. We don’t think about the calories we’re drinking “People are usually aware that sugarsweetened beverages can be problematic but they don’t always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee,” he says. “And people really don’t like to think about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that’s something you can’t ignore if you’re trying to lose weight.”Best advice he can offer? “Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy — and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you’ve got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.”
