ligo based action group Revive Northwest are about to march on Dail Eireann to make their voices heard at the lack of a motorway from Sligo to Dublin and from the Northwest to the Southwest. This will be a positive protest on the 8th Februay, 2017 at 3pm at Leinster House, highlighting some of the problems which are restricting growth in the region. Although based in Sligo, the group are aware that the Northwest and Western region, as a whole, is being forgotten about by the Government, especially with regard to infrastructure. Revive Northwest co-founder Anthony Gray said, “In recent years Sligo, like many areas in the region, has made massive ground as a wonderful tourism destination and tourism continues to grow with adventure activities, a vibrant night life, fantastic music and our love of poetry. We know we can hold massive events such as Fleadh Cheoíl na Éireann and we are also now recognised as the foodie and culinary destination of the Northwest. “In addition, Sligo is now the volunteering capital for 2017 which is a massive achievement but unfortunately we are being held back by in central government by the fact that our infrastructure is not what it should be. The CSO figures also show we are declining as a county and we are not getting investment and job growth is stagnant. Sadly, this situation is all too common for other areas in the region. This is an invitation to join us and other like minded people to push for continued growth in Sligo and the Northwest and Western region. Continued on Page 2

T looks like Mayo’s University Hospital’s emergency department has so far escaped the major overcrowding crisis that has beset some of the country’s larger hospitals, including

departments. For two days in a row, more than 600 patients languished on trolleys in emergency departments throughout the country. The demand for beds has, of course, increased substantially since the onset of the recent flue epidemic. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Association’s Trolley Watch monitors the number of patients on trolleys in emergency departments, while its Ward Watch monitors the number of patients on beds, trolleys or chairs in inpatient wards/units above the stated capacity of that ward/unit. Last Thursday was MUH’s busiest day in the last week, with a total of eleven patients recorded on trolleys in the Emergency Department or using beds in inpatient wards. On Friday, that number had been reduced to five, while yesterday (Monday) it was down to one. In contrast, UCHG was inundated, with one woman describing the conditions in the Emergency Department as ‘inhumane’. One woman from Clifden brought her 94-year-old father to the ED with a septic foot on Tuesday last, January 3, when 40 patients were recorded on trolleys. “On arrival at the A&E in Galway, I was stunned by the overcrowding,” she said. “When we did receive a trolley in A&E, as we were out in the public waiting room, we had to wait for seven hours on the corridor of the A&E. I had no problem with waiting, but it was truly inhumane. The trolleys were lined up on both walls of the corridor with very ill and many elderly patients,” she said. The lady from Clifden said her father was left for 13 hours without anyone examining his foot, and in total they were in the hospital for 21 hours. “I feel so sad for both the patients and medical staff. As regards my Dad, I pray he has not picked up any infection from surrounding patients, as it would most certainly kill him,” she said. We spoke to the relative of another patient who had been left for even longer without being examined, but his condition was not as serious.

Motorway needed to give our region a fair chance Continued from front page “We all have the same goals and believe that the region should certainly be moving at the same pace as other parts of the country. While we welcome some recent developments and long overdue works to be carried out along certain stretches of roads, we are also concerned of timelines and funding. “As an action group our main focus is to ensure that Sligo gets a new motorway connecting Dublin to Sligo. This will open up our majestic adventure capital of the Northwest to one and all, and being a pivotal town on the Wild Atlantic Way, will make us a major tourism hotspot of

the Northwest. This will ensure more business opportunities for companies to invest in Sligo, and indeed the greater Northwest region, and an increase in local jobs. “We want to see our region prosper for future generations. We believe we have so much to offer with breathtaking scenery, culture, food, poetry, and music. “Finally we believe it’s time this region prospered like the rest of the country. It’s time to shout “STOP” in 2017, as we are fed up being left behind, which has gone on for far too many years. We are asking people from the region to come out on the day and support the future of the communities.”

oliticians are coming under increasing pressure to protect the future of the public Bus Eireann Bus Service in rural Ireland. Bus Eireann has to reverse losses of over €8m and it commissioned a report by Grant Thornton which outlines cutting Expressway services as part of a potential solution. Bus Eireann, who is now under the leadersip of a new CEO Mr. Ray Hernan, formerly of Ryanair, says it would like to

see the expressway services remain as part of its product. Siptu representative Willie Noone however, says it is now time for talks with their employees. He says workers remain in the dark as to what is happening or the timeframe involved and he’s calling on politicians to step up to the mark: Meanwhile in a statement issued by Sligo Leitrim Sinn Fein TD Martin Kenny has hit out at the National Transport Authority for allowing private operators to ‘cherry-pick’

more profitable routes. He says as a result of such licences being allowed to flood the market, Bus Eireann has been left with less passengers on busy routes due to competition and it’s left to cover the less profitable routes alone which is costing the company dearly. He’s urging the Minister for Transport Shane Ross to engage with stakeholders and to find alternatives to this rampant privatisation and cuts to public service as proposed.

County Roscommon is one of lowest for crime rates Residents throughout Roscommon will be happy to know that figures reveal serious crime is down or relatively stable in both Roscommon and Castlerea garda districts. This was outlined by Chief Superintendent Padraig Rattigan at a December meeting of the joint policing committee. However, there has been an increase in public order incidents and criminal damage in the Roscommon district area. In the Roscommon district eight assaults causing harm have been recorded this year, slightly up on last year. However, in the neighbouring district, ten such crimes were recorded, a drop of 41 per cent on 2015.

In terms of burglaries, 42 were recorded to date in the Roscommon district, and 77 in the Castlerea district. There were also 56 incidents of criminal damage in the Roscommon district and 80 in the Castlerea district. Public order offences reached 103 in the Roscommon district, an increase of 49 per cent on last year, and 70 in Castlerea district a fall of 37 per cent. This is national trend, the meeting heard, and may be as a result of the improvement in the economy. The chief superintendent said that five grow houses had been detected in the Castlerea district so far this year and one

in the Roscommon district. He warned landlords “to be very very careful before renting” their property. However, he stressed that Roscommon remained one of the safest counties in the county to live and work in. “We haven’t seen any major increases in crime and we don’t have any serious unsolved crime, which is a very positive step,” he told the meeting. “The population of the two districts is 57,159 equating to one guard per 340 people. Nationally that is a high figure and we are well served. The division has not lost huge numbers of gardaí as experienced in other areas.”

Knock airport celebrates its busiest year ever

2016 has proven to be a record breaking year at Ireland West Airport with passenger numbers exceeding 730,000 for the first time in the airport’s 31 year history. In 2016, the annual number of passengers using the airport increased by 7% to 734,031, an increase of 48,563 passengers compared to 2015. The Airport now serves 23 International destinations and is served by three of Europe’s major International airlines, Aer Lingus, Flybe and Ryanair. The growth in passenger numbers in 2016 was fuelled by the commencement of four new services to Birmingham and

Edinburgh with Flybe, Costa Dorada with Falcon & Thomson Holidays and the arrival of the first ever charter service from Boston with Aer Lingus. Extra capacity on existing services from Barcelona, Bristol, Faro and Manchester also helped drive passenger numbers to record levels in 2016. The UK Market saw the biggest increase in 2016 with an extra 55,000 passengers using UK services to and from the airport which represented a 10% increase on 2015 numbers. The Airport now serves 9 different airports across the UK which represents the biggest selection of UK

services to and from the West and North West of Ireland. 2016 also proved to be a very eventful year as the airport celebrated a number of milestones, including celebrating the 30th anniversary of the official opening of the airport, a special visit by US Vice President Joe Biden and the airport’s first ever runway run for charity which saw 1,500 participants take to the famous runway for a 5km run. In addition the airport welcomed its 10 millionth passenger through the airport in July 2016 and towards the end of the year the airport was the focus of a six-part UTV Ireland documentary which was watched by over 1.5 million viewers. In addition in 2016 the airport welcomed an investment by 7 Local Authorities (including Leitrim) for an equity shareholding into the airport which has seen the formation of a unique and positive collaboration with local government in the areas of tourism, economic development and Diaspora engagement. 2017 plans to be another exciting year at the airport with the roll out of a number of major projects to enhance and develop the airport’s facilities to ensure the airport continues to offer an excellent and efficient product to passengers and airline customers as traffic increases. In May the airport, in partnership with Knock Shrine and Joe Walsh Tours, welcomes a historic charter departing for New York with Aer Lingus which will see the remains of John Curry, the youngest person to witness the Knock Apparition of 1879, re-interred from the current location at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Long Island to St. Patrick’s old Cathedral, New York.

light in a parliamentary reply by Fianna Fáil spokesman on mental health James Browne when he was highlighting questions raised over the availability of the services in Donegal, Waterford and Clare. The imbalance in the nature of the service throughout the country gives cause for major concern. "This represents vast swathes of the country which are left without an effective out-of-hours service," said Mr. Browne. "It's clear our mental health services have been struggling in recent years due to a lack of investment and increasing demand. Despite this, the Government has continued to under-fund our mental health services. This attitude needs to change. "It is vital that the availability of out-of-hours mental health services for children is spread evenly across the country. The Mental Health Commission has highlighted that underinvestment is one of the factors contributing to the high number of admissions of children to adult psychiatric units."

or ‘her enduring search to find ways to make it easier for those particularly the young who may be struggling with LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender) issues’. Ms Marina Tuffy was named Mayo’s “Most Inspirational” woman of 1916 at the annual Nollaig na mBan event, organised by Mayo Rape Crisis Centres held in Ballina on Friday night, January 6. Ms Tuffy, who was presented with her award by Marian Harkin, MEP, was chosen from a list of seven nominees which included Olive O’Donnell, Noeline Haylett, Jutta Kirrkamm, Marian Navin, Lavinia Slater Gilmartin and Maureen Healy. Event organiser Ruth McNeely said: “These are all a wonderful group of inspirational women who give time, energy and heart to a number of projects, groups, communities and families. The list of their activities,

kindnesses and their areas of expertise, skill and commitment is truly awesome. The award recipient Marina was nominated for her enduring capacity to welcome ‘the other’ in so many ways but also her enduring search to find ways to make it easier for those, particularly the young, who may be struggling with LGBT issues,” She continued: “Marina has an understanding and expertise born from her own experiences that she uses to make it easier for others.” Praising all the nominees, Ms McNeely explained the awards were ‘a way of recognising the incredible hidden courage of those who use the services of Mayo Rape Crisis Centre and who go back to their own families and communities and make changes that help make Mayo a safer place’. “This year the issues that the women

have been nominated for range over several key current areas. From being nominated again for just being truly themselves, caring for and fighting for others is the major theme in all the nominations,” Ms McNeely said. She congratulated Marina, all the other nominees, the organising commmittee, sponsors and donators. Ms Tuffy’s wife, American-born Cynthia Silva, in a moving citation nominating Marina, revealed how she had welcomed her “as a blow-in to a small village” and as Marina’s husband had died from a heart attack when her four children were very young she “knew about not fitting in, from childhood pain, heartache, loss and fear”. She also praised her for so many other things, including her work as a psychotherapist and a co-founder of three LGBT groups.

Mayo judgement proves that obstruction of Fisheries Officers “will not be tolerated” “The regulation of angling on the River Moy is imperative if we are to effectively conserve and protect this valuable resource”, according to Dr Ciaran Byrne, CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland. Dr. Byrne was speaking after a judgement by Judge Mary Devins in Castlebar District Court on the 3rd January. The Judge had convicted Mr David Egan, Balla, Claremorris Co. Mayo for obstruction of a Fisheries Officer and for failure to produce a salmon angling licence when requested. Judge Devins imposed fines totalling €600 which included €500 for the obstruction charge and €100 for not being in possession of a valid salmon angling licence. According to Dr.Byrne: “Incidents of obstruction of Fisheries Officers have become quite common and this court case sends a clear message that this

will not be tolerated.” Inland Fisheries Ireland brought the case against Mr. Egan when he was found fishing a section of the Cloongee Fishery on the River Moy in the Pollagh area and was not in possession of a valid permit or salmon angling licence. Solicitor Dermot Hewson, acting on behalf of Inland Fisheries Ireland, outlined the facts of the case against Mr Egan and his refusal to hand over his fishing gear. No defence was offered by Mr. Egan who pleaded guilty to both charges. Inland Fisheries Ireland’s ownership of the fishing rights on the Pollagh section of the Cloongee Fishery near Foxford was disputed previously. However, at a special sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court in 2012, Inland Fisheries Ireland’s exclusive ownership of the fishing rights to the entire Cloongee Fishery was confirmed. The

fishery was purchased from the private owners by the former North Western Regional Fisheries Board on behalf of the State in 2005. Cloongee Fishery is well known as a very productive salmon fishery and Inland Fisheries Ireland has ensured that permits are available locally at a reasonable cost. The fisheries resource offers huge value from both a recreational and economic perspective to the local community. Inland Fisheries Ireland will continue to apprehend those who carry out illegal fishing activity.” Inland Fisheries Ireland has a confidential hotline number to enable members of the public to report incidents 1890 34 74 24 or 1890 FISH 24. This phone line is designed to encourage the reporting of incidents of illegal fishing, water pollution and invasive species.

Cherish the Ladies in Coleman Music Centre C

herish the Ladies, the Irish traditional music and dance group, perform in the Coleman Music Centre (Gurteen) on Saturday, 21st January, at 9 p.m. Under the leadership of the dynamic and irrepressible flute and whistle champion Joanie Madden, these ladies create an evening that includes a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements, and stunning step dancing. Their continued success as one of the top Celtic groups in the world is due to the ensemble’s ability to take the best of Irish traditional music and dance and put it forth in an immensely entertaining package. The New York Times calls their music “passionate, tender, and rambunctious”, and the Washington Post praises their “astonishing array of virtuosity”, They’ve won recognition as the BBC’s Best Musical Group of the Year and named the Top North American Celtic Group by both the Irish Music Awards and NPR’s Thistle and Shamrock - not to mention having a street named after them on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx; Joanie Madden and Cherish the Ladies! Over the course of 30 years, the Ladies have performed thousands of concerts and have collaborated with such notable musicians as The Boston Pops, The Clancy Brothers, The Chieftains, Vince Gill, Nanci Griffith, Pete Seeger, Don Henley, Arlo Guthrie and Maura O’Connell as well as being the featured soloist with over 300 performances with symphony orchestras. They are in constant demand worldwide as their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continues to grow. Their name may come from a traditional Irish jig but after thirty years, they have proven that the jig is still not up as these ladies blaze forward into another decade of music-making. To book: 071-91-82599. Adm. €20.00.

New Year’s Day Tractorcade in Manorhamilton

Call Fermanagh on 0044-7818-452267

BLIND

BROOK No! It wasn’t a farmers’ protest. Rather it was dozens of tractors driving through Manorhamilton to raise money for charity. On New Year’s Day the Manorhamilton IFA Branch staged another successful Charity Tractorcade with well over 50 tractors of all types and makes taking part. The route for the Tractorcade saw the cavalcade of vehicles, after leaving from the Mart, go through the town and

through Manor’s new traffic lights for its first time and then after going around the Castle and down park Road proceed on its normal course down the N16 Enniskillen road as far as Kilmakerrill. The Tractorcade then returned to Manorhamilton Mart via Lissinagroagh and the Blackpark junction. Family, friends and supporters of the Tractorcade turned out in large numbers to support the event at the

Mart prior to it. IFA collection buckets were in operation at a checkpoint outside the Mart on the N16 for this year’s events chosen charity, Our Lady’s Day Hospital. The Tractorcade was staged with the aim of providing two pressure relieving chairs for Our Lady’s Day Hospital, which will be of great benefit to the many local patients who attend there each day.

All set for the 2017 Mayo International Choral Festival

‘Lyra’, from St Petersburg, Russia, will take part in the Mayo International Choral Festival, 24th to 28th May 2017. All events open to a public audience – for more details www.mayochoral.com or Tel 094 90 2 30 40

W

ith interest from countries as diverse as Russia, Bulgaria, England and Sweden, the organisers are delighted with the response to the May 2017 festival (24th to 28th May). The festival continues to grow in popularity and is now considered to be one of the top four choral events in Ireland. The festival takes the form of visiting and local choirs participating in concerts, all over Mayo, as well as ‘popup’ choir performances on the streets and in public buildings, covering many genres, including Barbershop, Sacred Music, Pop, Gospel and Gaelic and Celtic language. Many of the choirs take part in competitions, judged by a panel of renowned international adjudicators. All events, including the competitions, are

open to a public audience. The Saturday night Gala concert has now become one of the most popular nights out in the West. If last year’s sold out event is anything to go by, this year will be no exception with special guests soon to be announced. The Gala night features the Premier Competition when all the winning choirs from the competitions perform. The festival has now become the point of contact for International choirs touring Europe and this October will see a choir from the Netherlands visit Mayo for several nights, facilitated by the Mayo International Choral Festival committee and volunteers. Choirs who have participated have cited as attractions the fantastic historic venues with great acoustics that are peppered all over Mayo, the

friendliness of the Mayo people, the stunning scenery, the efficient organisation and facilities of the festival and the relaxed atmosphere. Said festival director, Declan Durcan – “Any festival has to have several key ingredients for it to work, and the executive committee, the Choirs from Mayo, the hundreds of volunteers and main sponsors of Mayo County Council and Fáilte Ireland and local businesses, as well as the International and National visiting choirs and the loyal public audiences and local media, all mix together in a melting pot that serves up a wonderful spectacle of song and music, alongside attractions and scenery that are second to none. It’s a massive team effort and is testament to what can be achieved by the county acting as a whole”. Declan went on to say that “We are looking forward to the future of the festival and a new five-year development plan in now underway, due to be launched later this year, with input from all stakeholders. Our new Chairman Frank Murray and Frank is really enjoying the role and we are delighted that Frank is on board”. After five years the previous chairman and founder Edward Horkan stepped down from the role and has been appointed Honorary President. While entry for International choirs to the 2017 festival is now closed, the entry deadline for choirs from Ireland has been extended to 31st January, by request from several choirs. Entry forms available from www.mayochoral.com or info@mayochoral.com or by phoning 094 90 2 30 40.

Notes From The Dentists Chair

With John McCann BDS BSc - Principal Dentist Maguire McCann Dental Surgeons GDC Reg No. 68239

TOOTH DECAY AND HOW TO PREVENT IT In this month’s article I turn attention to the most basic of dental problems; tooth decay. To dentists tooth decay is known as caries and it forms a large part of our daily work. Both adult and child dental health surveys have consistently shown higher levels of tooth decay in Northern Ireland than in any other area of the UK. Fermanagh has consistently rated amongst one of the highest areas in Northern Ireland. Like many aspects of dental disease however, decay is largely preventable. Decay requires 4 things in order to develop; a susceptible tooth surface, plaque bacteria, sugar and time. I will discuss each of these in turn and then suggest how decay may be prevented. Dental decay can only occur on a natural tooth surface. Fillings, crowns, dentures etc cannot decay, although the natural tooth they are attached to can. Back teeth have more complex shapes with more grooves and fissures where plaque bacteria and sugars can accumulate. They are thus more prone to decay than front teeth which have generally smoother surfaces. The plaque which is present in all of our mouths contains dozens of different types of bacteria. When we eat, some of these bacteria will take up some of the sugars in our food. They then convert these sugars to acid. This acid attacks the tooth structure causing it to lose calcium. As the enamel and dentine lose calcium they soften and break

down. This is what dental decay or dental caries is. Time is also an important factor in the development of decay. When something sugary is eaten the acid produce by the plaque bacteria will remain on the teeth for approximately 20-30 minutes afterwards. The teeth remain under attack and continue to lose calcium during this time. The calcium which is present in saliva can replace that which has been lost, thereby repairing the damage. However, this natural repair mechanism takes much longer than the acid damage. The teeth need approximately 2 hours free from any further attack in order to repair. Armed with this understanding of how the decay process occurs we can take steps to prevent it. The importance of good toothbrushing is obvious. Reducing the presence of plaque by thorough brushing leaves fewer bacteria available to produce acid. The beneficial effect of brushing is reinforced by using fluoride toothpastes and mouthwashes. The fluoride is absorbed by the enamel and actually makes it more resistant to the effects of plaque acid. However, there is only so much which can be achieved by brushing. The key factor in decay prevention is control of sugar intake. Even with good brushing someone who consumes a lot of sugary foods or drinks will develop decay. Consuming a lot of sugary things, or consuming a smaller amount frequently, i.e. snacking, keeps acid in the mouth for longer than can be repaired, thus allowing decay to progress. The big message then is; cut down on the sweet things! Your teeth will thank you for it.

Home Energy Tips That Save You Money efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy. Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy. Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply.

E

nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. As the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment. Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make

sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water. Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows. Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day. Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing

Most people overlook key to weight loss comfort. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, as long as we acknowledge it and deal with it appropriately,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that when the brain experiences any type of pleasure, whether from food or something else, it reacts in the same way - the brain releases the neurotransmitter, dopamine, which is sometimes referred to as a ‘feel good chemical’. “We feel good whenever that process is activated, but when we start to put food into that equation and it becomes our reward, it can have negative consequences,” she said. Studies have found a link between emotional issues, such as depression and stress, and a higher body mass index (BMI). For example, some people turn to food when they are feeling low. Dr Robinson offers the following

T

he key to weight loss is not what you put into your mouth, but why, US researchers have

said. With 2016 just weeks away, a lot of people will make a New Year resolution to lose weight, however many will not achieve this and among those who do, the majority will regain the weight they lose. In fact, studies suggest that twothirds of people who lose 5% of their total weight, gain it back, and the more weight a person loses, the lower their chances of keeping it off. However, according to Dr Diane Robinson, a neuropsychologist at Orlando Health, these figures are not surprising as most people focus

on the physical aspects of losing weight, such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the emotional aspect. “There is an emotional component to food that the vast majority of people simply overlook and it can quickly sabotage their efforts. In order to lose weight and keep it off long-term, we need to do more than just think about what we eat, we also need to understand why we’re eating,” she noted. A recent survey of over 1,000 people by Orlando Health found that 31% felt that the biggest barrier to losing weight was a lack of exercise, while 26% blamed their diet. Some 17% blamed the costs associated with maintaining a

tips to help people recognise the emotional connection they may have to food: -Keep a diary every day, writing down the food you eat and your mood at the time of eating. Look for unhealthy patterns -Identify foods that make you feel good and write down why you eat them. For example, are you eating them because you feel stressed or do they evoke a certain memory Before you eat anything, ask yourself whether you are eating it because you are hungry. If you are not actually hungry, look for the root of your motive. Dr Robinson said that the main aim is to view eating as providing nourishment, not as a reward or coping mechanism. “If getting your body in shape hasn’t work out yet, maybe this time start with your mind,” she added.

healthy lifestyle, while 12% said they did not have enough time. Just one in 10 people felt that psychological wellbeing had a key role to play in weight loss. “This may explain why so many of us struggle,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that from a very young age, people are emotionally attached to food. For example, as children, we may be given treats to console us when we are sad or reward us when we behave well. Furthermore, many annual celebrations, such as Halloween, Christmas and birthdays, are focused on food. “If we’re aware of it or not, we are conditioned to use food not only for nourishment, but for

and wonder as four incredibly talented and creative folk musicians shape songs from ages past into something fresh, dynamic – and irresistible. When it comes to moulding traditional sounds into contemporary songs, few match the inventiveness and heart-rending emotion of Orkneyborn singer Kris Drever. Freewheeling guitarist with awardwinning avant-folk trio Lau, Drever has been described by Q magazine as ‘the standard bearer’ of the folk music revival. Drever’s no-holds barred approach is shared by Julie Fowlis, a silver-toned singer whose voice – ‘pure and elemental as a Hebridean seashore’ – has seen her become Gaelic music’s most celebrated global ambassador. Completing this outstanding lineup are multi-award winning fiddler Aoife Ní Bhriain, renowned for her technical virtuosity across both traditional and classical music and concertina player Padraig Rynne whose ensembles Guidewires, Dán and Triad have re-defined the boundaries of the traditional music world.

David Munnelly Trio at Arts Centre

The Field at Arts Centre Dooega Drama Group is delighted to make their Ballina Arts Centre debut with a production of John B Keane’s masterpiece, The Field, on 10th February, 2017. One of the most iconic Irish plays, The Field tells the story of the formidable ‘Bull’ McCabe and his obsession for the land he rents. Matters come to a head when Margaret Butler, the widow who owns the field, decides to sell it, via public auction. ‘The Bull’ and his like-minded son Tadhg, feel they have first claim on the field after years of cultivating it and no local dares to bid against him. When an outsider, William Dee, arrives to bid for the field everything changes.Tickets: € 14 / €12. Early booking advised, www.ballinaartscentre.com. 096-73593.

Joseph McNulty (Fiddle) is an accomplished musician on both fiddle and bodhran. He credits a lot of his success to having spent years in the company of Peter Horan RIP who was regarded as one of Sligo’s finest musicians. Tickets: €16 / €14. 096-73593.
