E-STRESS, not DISTRESS would be high on the wish-list for all students sitting their exams these weeks. However, this is easier said than done. As we go to press Leaving Cert students have put the English and Geography papers behind them and the light at the end of tunnel is getting that bit closer. But for 119,000 or so students (sitting Leaving Cert or Junior Cert) and their parents the “stress” will continue for at least another week. It is questionable whether 14-15 year-olds, in partiular should be exposed to so much pressure which can have an adverse effect on young teenagers’ mental well-being. Let’s face it, they’ve all done what they have done at this stage . . . and they can only perform to an equivalent level. In some cases, also, the expectations of parents can be excessive. It is important that students eat healthily during exams, stick to a balanced diet and drink less coffee. Simple exercise like walking or cycling with friends should help you relax. Even watching a TV programme or two can be a great stress-buster. It is most important, also, to get in a good night’s sleep, 6 – 8 hours perhaps, before any exam. For Leaving Cert students the exams and results may seem the most important thing in their lives . . . but it’s not true. For those who don’t achieve their first CAO choice there is always the second option. If you’re not happy with the results you have the option of a re-check, though you would need to consult with your teacher as you review your exam scripts as a re-check may bring you up or down. There are also post-Leaving Cert courses that may provide another route into your preferred course, not to mention the option of repeating. Continued on Page 2

Leitrim’s Zara Healy will contest Rose of Tralee finals

C

ompeting against 60 Roses from Ireland and around the world Carrick-on-Shannon’s Zara Healy was one of 23 roses to be selected to represent her county in the Rose of Tralee Festival in August. Zara shone on stage and impressed judges at the regional finals in Portaoise at the weekend. She was delighted and surprised with the outcome and is now looking forward to Tralee. She said it was a “brilliant weekend” and she loved meeting the other Roses and seeing places she had never visited before. She said the interview with Daithi O Se was “so relaxed and easy.” She said she spoke about her own work, the family business and Carrick-on-Shannon. A bus load of

supporters from Leitrim cheered her on last Friday night. Some of her family had provisionally booked accommodation in Tralee before the selection night - a great show of faith in Zara’s ability to shine though. She is hoping to recover from the hectic weekend before she begins her preparations for the Rose Tour which includes a two day stop in Leitrim before she heads for Tralee. This year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place from 15 to 19 August and Haley O’Sullivan’s successor will be crowned with the Newbridge Silverware Tiara in the Festival Dome on Tuesday, 19th August. And who knows . . . this could be Leitrim’s year.

The Awards were announced on Wednesday last by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., at an award ceremony held on Skerries South Beach in North County Dublin. Overall, 76 beaches and four marinas were awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award, representing an increase in six Blue Flag awards since 2013. According to Patricia Oliver, Director, Environmental Unit of An Taisce, highlighted that “In order to be eligible for the Blue Flag a beach or marina must comply

with strict criteria relating to water quality, safety, facilities for visitors, beach management, including letter control, environmental education and the provision of information.” Nine beaches in Mayo – Ballycastle, Carrowniskey, Cross (Belmullet), Cross (Louisburgh), Portacloy, Silver Strand, Srah, Termon and Whitestrand were awarded the Green Coast Award, an increase of two from last year, while Sligo retained its five Green Coast Awards for beaches at Dunmoran, Enniscrone, Mullaghmore, Rosses Point and Streedagh. Commenting on the Green Coast Award Ms. Oliver said: “The Green Coast Award recognises beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality

and natural beauty. These beaches may not have the necessary built infrastructure required to meet the criteria set for Blue Flag status; however, they are excepSOME BENEFITS • TREATS MOULD AND CONDENSATION PROBLEMS tional places to visit and • REDUCES RADON LEVELS enjoy our rich coastal • AIR QUALITY IN YOUR HOME IMPROVES DRAMATICALLY • WILL HELP PEOPLE WHO HAVE ASTHMA/ALLERGIES heritage and diversity.” • FITTED BY TRAINED PERSONNEL In all a total of 134 • NO FUSS-NO MESS Awards were presented by Mr. Hogan, who praised the efforts of communities, local authorities and An Taisce for the sterling work www. drimaster.ie they do and said results You can also call us on 1890 908 318 or 096 79201 might have been ever or email us at info@drimaster.ie better were it not for the devastating storms last winter. When it’s all over don’t engage in an exam post-mortem . . . dissecting every aspect of the paper; it will serve no purpose in improving your mark and may leave you asking “what if” when you should be preparing for your next exam. Relaxing or listening to a few musical tunes is a good way to destress after the ordeal. While it’s understandable that students will want to celebrate when it’s all over (and they deserve to, don’t they?) a balance is required here too. Maybe it’s because so many of them have been confined to “concentration camp living” for so many weeks that

they feel compelled to over-indulge with drink and other substances? Sometimes, however, this activity can have tragic consequences and the potential benefit of years of study can be frittered away overnight. So, if some students opt for foreign holidays or engage in excessive partying to celebrate, parents should encourage restraint and moderation, while accepting the need for respite after all the stress and tension of the exams. The best advice, perhaps, to parents at this stage, while the thousands of students are in throes of the exams, is to support and encourage while placing less emphasis on expectations.

here are fears that the buyout of Donegal Creameries by Connaught Gold in 2012 will now cost 30 jobs at the milk processing plant in Sligo. This prospect seems inevitable after Aurivo, formerly Connaght Gold, announced recently that it is intending to move the liquid milk processing and packing operation from its Sligo facility on the Strandhill Road to Donegal. The move will see the transfer of the milk processing to Aurivo Consumer Foods in Killygordon, Co Donegal, which the company says is part of a business consolidation process. The union involved has organized a 30-day consultation with workers affected by the move. The company states the adminis-

tration, sales and marketing functions of the consumer foods business will remain in Sligo and ten additional production positions will be available at the Donegal site. In the meantime other employment opportunities within the co-op will be explored for employees affected by the proposal. But this could also include redeployment to the Donegal plant. The acquisition had been approved by the Competitions Authority back in 2012. The authority said at the time that it had taken account of the views of customers of both entities as well as the views of the Irish Farmers Association about the competitive impact of the acquisition on farmers in the northwest.

Swiss Journalists Explore Mayo And The Wild Atlantic Way Tourism Ireland invited a group of top Swiss travel writers to explore Mayo and the Wild Atlantic Way this week. They were here to experience some of what Ireland has to offer, including our newest visitor experience, the Wild Atlantic Way – and to then inspire their readers to come and discover it for themselves. Pictured right are Gian Gregori, Tourism Ireland (standing, left), in Westport, with Swiss journalists during their fact-finding visit to Mayo.

Gian Gregori, Tourism Ireland Switzerland, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to invite this group of influential journalists to Mayo and the West of Ireland. Seeing is believing – so factfinding visits like this are an extremely important element of our publicity and PR programme in Switzerland; they are a really effective way for us to get positive exposure for Ireland through the media, helping us to showcase Mayo and the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way to thousands of potential Swiss holidaymakers.”

Behind the Father’s Day Joy Turmoil of Infertile Men as the Nation Celebrates Dads As Father’s Day looms, cue the annual bombardment of ‘The Perfect Father’s Day Gift’ messages. While for some, this may be a trusty tie or a new set of golf clubs, for others it’s something a lot simpler they long for this June 15th – just to be called Dad! As simple as it sounds, for many men it is one of the biggest struggles they will face in their lifetime – not being able to father a child. Male infertility can at times be overlooked in favour of the emotional and physical toll fertility treatment takes on women. Although they suffer in silence, suffer they do!

The National Infertility Support and Information Group (NISIG) estimates that infertility lies 40% with men and 40% with women. The remaining 10% is unexplained. So, if fertility issues lie evenly with women and men, why are men’s battles kept in the dark? NISIG are urging those men who are going through this difficult time to speak to someone they trust. Sharing their struggle with someone who understands how they are feeling can ease the pain of not being able to conceive naturally. According to NISIG, the majority of men experiencing fertil-

ity issues, struggle mostly with the feeling of failure they have at not being able to provide a child for their partner. Helen Browne, co-founder and chairperson of NISIG comments: ‘One of our primary functions as human beings is to reproduce. Many men feel that they are failing in their biological duties if they are unable to father a child.’ These feelings of failure are known to come between men and their partners. Browne continues: ‘Unfortunately many men bottle their feelings up and retract from their partners rather than speaking to them about what they are

going through. Speaking to other men who are either going through or who have overcome infertility can really help them see that there are so many options open to infertile men in Ireland. It can also help direct them to the right place to access the services they need.’ NISIG hold monthly support groups throughout the country offering advice, information and guidance for both men and women who are suffering from fertility issues. For more information, support group locations, advice and more, see www.nisig.com.

1 million Germans to see Mayo TV documentary

A

round one million people in Germany will see images of Westport in a TV documentary entitled WelThe German TV crew filming for Weltreisen along the Wild Atlantic Way

treisen (meaning ‘World Travel’), which airs next month. A crew from ARD, a national German TV network, is

in Ireland this week – as guests of Tourism Ireland – filming for the documentary along the Wild Atlantic Way. The programme featuring Westport will air in July, reaching an estimated one million viewers across Germany. This year, Tourism Ireland is placing a major focus on the Wild Atlantic Way in its promotions around the world. The Wild Atlantic Way is being highlighted across a range of platforms including TV, print and online advertising; on Ireland.com and through social media channels; at major international consumer and trade fairs; through familiarisation visits for influential travel agents, tour operators, as well as international travel and lifestyle journalists and bloggers; and through Tourism Ireland’s promotional material – our market guides and brochures.

Zoë Redmond, Tourism Ireland’s manager for Central Europe, said: “We are delighted that the crew from ARD agreed to create this documentary featuring Westport and the Wild Atlantic Way. The programme will be seen by around one million potential holidaymakers for Ireland – encouraging them to come and sample Mayo and the Wild Atlantic Way for themselves. “2013 was a record year for German visitors to Ireland and Tourism Ireland has an extensive programme of promotional activity under way throughout 2014 – to keep the momentum going and build on that growth. We are placing a major focus on the Wild Atlantic Way, which we know has tremendous appeal for German holidaymakers. We are also promoting key events, including Limerick City of Culture 2014.”

Embrace Farming Accident ARDNAREE Remembrance Service Abbeyleix TOOL & PLANT HIRE June 29

Abbey Street, Ballina. Co. Mayo Tel: 096-70630 / Fax: 096-72222

Pictured left to right are Brian and Norma Rohan organisers of the Embrace Farming Accident Ecumenical Remembrance Service with the Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine, Simon Coveney TD and Pat Griffin from the Health and Safety Association.

T

his inaugural Ecumenical Remembrance Service for the victims of farm accidents and their bereaved families, friends and neighbours will take place in the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois on Sunday June 29 at 2pm. An Ecumenical Service of

Readings, Prayer and Song will be celebrated by both Catholic and Church of Ireland clergy led by Bishops Denis Nulty (RC)* and supported by Michael Burrows (Church of Ireland). Keynote speakers from Agri organisations, Counsellors and families directly impacted by farming

accidents. Tea and efreshments kindly sponsored by IFA Four International Rugby players involved in farming will be Provincial Ambassadors for Embrace and will also take part in the Service. They are Rory Best of Ulster, Sean O’Brien of Leinster, John Hayes of Munster and John Muldoon of Connacht. Almost 300 adults and children have lost their lives in farming accidents on the island of Ireland over the past 10 years. The Rohan family was forcefully made aware of these facts on the 19th of June 2012 when their Dad, Liam Rohan was tragically involved in an accident on the family farm near Shanahoe in Co. Laois and sadly passed away three days later. Liam Rohan was well known in farming circles as he represented the Republic of Ireland four times in the World Ploughing Championship, 1982 in Australia, 1985 in Denmark, 1987 in Austria and 1988 in the USA. According to his son Brian “we quickly came to realise that there is little or no support available to families that have lost loved ones by way of emotional, practical, business, legal and financial advice.” Farming is the country’s most dangerous job so in honour of these people “my wife Norma and I are

organising a Remembrance Service on June 29. We will also remember all those who have survived serious accidents. Our aim is to create more awareness of farm safety especially as primary schools get their summer holidays around this time.” The aim is to develop this event into an annual remembrance at Provincial level and to develop various support structures to help families come to terms with the irreplaceable loss of their loved ones. According to Brian “we hope to do this by growing EMBRACE FARM (Farming Accidents — Remembered & Missed) as a support group for all those affected by farming accidents.” Brian, Norma (from Broadford, Co. Limerick) and the Rohan family have received tremendous support from Agribusiness, farm organisations, GAA, FTMTA, Health and Safety Authority, National Ploughing Association, Teagasc in their efforts to make the Embrace Remembrance Service a success. Families are encouraged to contact Embrace with names of their loved ones who have died from a farming accident so their names can to be read out on the day.

ubbercurry is centrally located on the N17Sligo/Galway Road. It is 20 Miles from Sligo Town, 23 Miles from Castlebar and 20 Miles from Boyle. Tubbercurry as a settlement place is on the map for over 600 years. The earliest mention of Tubbercurry in the history annuals is 1397 when a battle took place there between two O’Connor families, the O’Connor Don from Roscommon and the O’Connors from Sligo town. Tubbercurry celebrated its 600th birthday throughout the year of 1997 and this culminated with a visit to town by then President of Ireland Mrs Mary Robinson. Mrs Robinson came to visit

the Old Fair Day Festival in August 1997 and planted a tree in Wolf Tone Square to mark the occasion. Over the last 600 years there has been a number of milestones in the history of Tubbercurry and events in the town reflected by and large events on a national scale. The Famine Years of 1845 – 1847 were severe in South Sligo like other parts of the country and but for the help of a local merchant family, the Mullarkeys of Teeling St., things could have been a lot worse. In the early 1840’s the Mullarkey family owned a racehorse, ‘Pride of Ballyara’ and in their own words he won a large fortune for them

racing in England over a number of years. They owned the land in Ballyara where St. Attractas Community School now stands. ‘Pride of Ballyara’ was retired back to Ballyara in 1845 after his racing career was over. Shortage of food was severe in Ireland over those years as the potato blight killed the staple crop of most of the native farmers. The Mullarkey family purchased large quantities of oats, maize and corn in England and had several ship loads transported to Ballina port for distribution to the needy throughout South Sligo. Horse and cart was the only means of transport in those days and a severe shortage of horses meant that the famous racehorse ‘Pride of Ballyara’ had to go into action pulling cart loads of grain over a 50 mile return journey. Such was the respect the Mullarkey family had for this great horse that when died he was buried in the family plot at Ballyara Graveyard. A large headstone was erected in his honour which read: The Pride of Ballyara Tread softly oe’r this spot If blood can give nobility A noble steed was he His sire was blood and blood his dam and all his pedigree

Tubbercurry This slab is in remembrance of a famous thorough bred that netted a fortune for the Mullarkey Family. In Black 47 the famine yrs. Dr. J.P. Mullarkey purchesed 2 cargoe of oatmeal and 2 cargoe of potatoes and carted to Drumartin Aclare, Tubbercurry as a gift. We shall ne’er meet his like again. This headstone is still to be seen today in the old Ballyara graveyard and is well worth a visit. (entrance opposite St. Attractas Community School). After the Famine Years, political and agrarian reform followed the national trend. Charles Stewart Parnell spoke at a political rally in the 1880’s in Tubbercurry. Banada Convent was opened and developed at Banada from the 1860’s and the Marist Convent in Tubbercurry was established after the Marist Sisters came to town in 1904. The war of Independence and the Civil War was a turbulent time in Tubbercurry and the Black & Tans burned a large part of town in October 1st 1920 as a reprisal for the killing of an R.I.C. officer by the I.R.A. at Chaffpool. Throughout the early

decades of the 20th century as Ireland found the going tough as an independent country, Tubbercurry developed slowly but surely. Agriculture was the main industry of the region and most activities were based around farming. The creameries of Rathscanlon and Achonry developed their butter making procedures and those that could not find work locally had to emigrate. This was the case all too often during those decades. In 1955 Basta Industries was established by the Gallagher Brothers of Cashel and this breathed a whole breath of fresh air into employment opportunities locally. James, Matt and Bert Gallagher were the main drivers of this industrial revolution in Tubbercurry. They also had building interests in England as rebuilding works had commenced after World War II.Tool & Gauge was a sister company of Basta and both of these factories employed up to 400 people from the 1950’s to the 1980’s, people who otherwise would have had to emigrate. Since the 1980’s as a result of restructuring, employment has dropped but still over

200 top quality jobs are provided by both Basta & Tool & Gauge. Free education was introduced in the 1960’s and this was a huge help for young people who wanted to get 2nd level and 3rd level education. As the decades rolled towards the 21st century South Sligo now has a highly skilled and highly educated population. St. Attractas Community School opened in 2002 as a result of the amalgamation of Banada & Marist Convent Schools and is one of the finest second level schools in Ireland and possibly even in Europe. North Connacht College offer school leavers and mature students a host of options to futher their education with various Ftec courses.Today, in the 21st Century Tubbercurry looks back with pride at its achievements over the years. The local Chamber of Commerce & Community Association continue to develop contacts around the world to attract people and business to our community. Housing developments on an unprecedented scale in Tubbercurry has seen the population of the immediate town grow from 1000 people to closer to 2000 over the last few years.

Tubbercurry Tubbercurry Old Fair Day

number of enterprising people in Tubbercurry decided that the tradition of the fair day, which has lasted for at least 220 years, could not be let die altogether and they decided to build a fair. The fair day was held on the second Wednesday of every month and the tradition has been continued with the Old Fair Day taking place on the second Wednesday in August. The first reference to an established fair day in Tubbercurry dates from a ‘patent’ granted to James Napier for the holding of two fairs, one on May 11th and the second on November 18th. This patent was granted in 1750. Over the years, the number of fairs increased, until in the year 1837, seven fairs were held between the months of February and November, together with a market on each Monday. By 1880 the number had increased to a fair being held each month of the year. It was normal for poultry and smaller animals such as bonhams (piglets) and calves to be sold and bought at the Monday market, which was a much more

modest trading occasion than the fair day. The fair days of the early years were occasions when only the gentry were in a position to buy and sell. The general population was there to serve the masters and gain for themselves whatever little advantage they could. They did however use the fair as a festive occasion, an opportunity to meet friends and relations, to arrange marriages ‘matchmaking’ (as the practice was termed), and to become acquainted with the latest gossip or political developments. The fairs also provided an opportunity for a substantial portion of the male population to indulge themselves, consuming on occasion more liquor than was good for them, and sometimes be coming involved in faction fighting, which was the curse of rural Ireland for much of the early and mid 19th century. Political movements used the fair day gatherings to whip up support for their policies, and this was particularly true of the ‘land leaguers’ during the struggle against landlordism. When the land question was

AUTOLINE

settled, the fair day took on a much more serious role for the small farmers, now masters of their own destiny. The livestock they sold at the fairs was for most, their only source of income and so, the status of their local fair and the attraction for serious buyers or ‘jobbers’ to attend, was of vital importance. Until the arrival of the railway to Tubbercurry in 1895, many of the cattle bought

at the fairs were walked by drovers as far as ports of Sligo and Ballina and occasionally as far as Westport. From that time until the advent of the cattle lorries, the instructions after the bargain and agreements on a sale was ‘ up to the station’ a more trustworthy method for each farmer to bet the true value of his animals, rather than be sweet talked by a glib jobber into parting with them for a pittance.

The necessity to control, or attempt to control animal disease, also gave the cattle marts an advantage over the fair. Over the centuries the fair had served as the focal point of commence for the businessmen and farmers of the town and area. 29th Tubbercurry Old Fair Day The Festival was brought back to life in 1985 and is now considered one of the leading Fair Days in the country which is now in it’s 29th year.We offer a wide variety of entertainment for both young and old and the Festival has grown in a five day event. Traditional and sean nós singers are spoiled for choice at this year’s summer school, with workshops being offered in English by renowned singer Deirdre Scanlan. A premier dead animal collection service P

roviding a fully-licensed, fast, efficient and humane dead animal collection service across the mid-west, Maloney & Matthews Animal Collection Ltd. operates the most modern knackery in Ireland, at Tubbercurry, County Sligo (just 5km from the Mayo border). We visited this state-of-the-art facility and got an insight into the history and current well-being of the business from co-founder Vincent Maloney. Maloney & Matthews Animal Collections Ltd. is the premier collector of dead and worn-out animals in the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim region. It is also the only licensed collectors of animals in this area (license number KN65).

Between them, Vincent Maloney and Jim Matthews boast over 45 years’ experience of collecting dead animals in the region. As the company is co-owned, with an owner from each Mayo and Sligo, they have an office in each county. With there being no other knackery in County Mayo, they are the recognised knackery for Mayo as well as Sligo and have been operating in this area for over thirty years. Operating a total of ten trucks, they guarantee a fast, efficient and professional service at all times. The fleet consists of one Scania articulated truck plus nine trucks for collecting animals (comprising one Volvo, one Iveco, four MANs and three Isuzus

- the newest addition being a 141 Isuzu). A brand new Manitou loadall has also been acquired this year. Trucks are based in Ballinrobe, Castlebar, Ballina, Claremorris, Tubbercurry, Sligo and Ballinamore and the fleet is maintained to the highest standards and can access all farm areas. Meanwhile, Maloney & Matthews’ staff members are trained in removing all fallen animals in a professional manner to ensure minimum fuss and disturbance to the farmer involved. One of the directors’ main aims is to provide farmers with a value-for-money, reliable service. If preferred, animals can also be dropped off at the stateof-the-art facility in Achonry, Tubbercurry, at a discounted rate - a cheaper alternative for farmers. The modern knackery facility in Achonry, Tubbercurry County Sligo benefits greatly from its central location. It is just six miles from Ballymote; nine from Charlestown; eleven from Ballaghadreen and Collooney roundabout; and 15 miles from Ballina, County Mayo and Boyle, County Roscommon. Here, Department of Agriculture vets carry out daily inspections on fallen animals and all paper work is completed to ensure that animals are taken off

the farmer’s system. The facility – which also includes offices and wash areas – has the first air filtering system of its kind in Ireland to ensure that all odours and smells are removed from the air. A same-day service is provided and lowest prices guaranteed. “All our drivers are qualified and would have good experience of farms. We also pride ourselves on providing a very ‘local’ service. We would have a driver located in every big town in Mayo and Sligo and they would have great local knowledge of the farms and the people in their respective areas. “This means that the farmer is

dealing with somebody he knows, as opposed to a stranger, which we feel is important with something as sensitive as removing dead animals from his farm. As well as the office numbers in Sligo and Mayo, we give out the local drivers’ numbers and the farmer can talk directly to the driver who is going to be calling to his farm to collect the animal. We try to look after everybody as best as we can and we have the height of respect for farmers. “We are very busy at the moment and the phones are ringing all the time. The business is going well and we are confident that things will continue in a similar vein.”

allaghaderreen is a busy Cathedral town of approximately 2000 population situated on the Mayo/Roscommon border close to the Lung River. . Historically it has been the gateway to the West. Dillon House on the Square was the ancestral home of John Blake and John & James Dillon, major figures in Irish political life. It is now the headquarters of the Western Development Commission. Beside it is the Headquarters and Administrative Offices of The Border, Midland and Western Regional Authority. In keeping with the whole area, which is famed for the richness of its

archaeological and historical heritage, St. Nathy's College, now a large very modern Secondary School, is built around a British Military Barracks dating back to 1798. Ballaghaderreen, situated in a river valley and surrounded by hills with captivating views, it has proved to be the inspiration for a large and vibrant colony of artists. As you approach Ballaghaderreen from the east, you pass the home of the First President of Ireland, Dr. Douglas Hyde. From the front of the Hyde Interpretive Centre one gets their first view of the scenery and the landscape

that has inspired generations of great Irish people.. With the friendliest of people, excellent food and accommodation together with an abundance of natural leisure facilities, Ballaghaderreen is a place to visit and linger. Ballaghaderreen they made. They constructed circular monuments on 'henges' of stone and wood e.g. the world famous Stonehenge. A fine example of an E.B.A. Stone Circle can be seen at Aughurine. Situated near a hill top it consists of a large circle of 14 upright stones with a cave or pit in the centre. Nearby there is a second smaller stone circle. Various circular earthen formations and the remains of two trackways (possibly ceremonial) are clearly visible. The purpose of such stonehenges is unlcear. Perhaps they had a ritual or astrological significance. Cremated bone has been found at a similar site at Newgrange. Stone Circles are mostly located in the South-West and North of the country adding to the importance of the site in Roscommon. Kiltobranks Cave: A cave in the townland Hill-Forts:At 586 ft. Fairymount Hill commands a great view of the surrounding country and would have made a natural defence. Two large interlinked hill-forts enclose the top of the hill and possibly date from the Iron Age. Such sites were almost certainly tribal. The chief and his followers occupied the hill-fort as a palace in time of place. However, all the tribesmen and their cattle could be accommodated within its defences in time of danger. Roscommon Co. Council have built a water tower on part of it.

Loughglynn Lake:Loughglynn lake was constructed in the early 19th. century by Jerrard Strickland, land agent to Viscount Dillon. It is of ornithological interest and is especially important to wildfowl in dry periods in winter.

Cill i Hooley: St. Lallocc is said to be associated with the coming of Christianity to Fairymount (Ard Senlis). It seems there was an early ecclesiastical foundation at Cill I Hooley. There are no ruins of the church, but is known as sacred ground and was used as a burial place for unbaptised infants until approx. fifty years ago.

Aughurine Stone Circle:About 2000 years B.C. metal was first used in Ireland and a very gradual transition from stone to bronze working took place. We know very little about the new people who arrived in Ireland with the skill of metal working. They are given the name "Beaker Folk" because of the elaborate pottery vessels

Loughglynn Castle: The remains of a Normal Castle, said to have belonged to the Fitzgeralds can be seen on the south side of the lake. One tower still stands. This was later the location of the farmyard belonging to Loughglynn House

KILGARRIFF FUNERAL DIRECTORS

of Kiltobranks may well be a pre-historic tomb. It is located on high ground. The entrance is carefully constructed and a lintel can be clearly seen. It is covered by a low mound of stones. O'Donovan 9Letters 1837) says that it was called Umhaidh Phadraig and that stones were held there in the early nineteenth century. Feigh Lake - Wild Life Sanctuary: Kilruan (Lisacul) - Ecclesiastical site: Kilrudane Ecclesiastical site: Tonroe: (a) The Tonroe Mill and Forge: An Oats and Corn mill of the 19th. century. Oats, wheat and barley were transported by farmers to be milled into wholemeal flour and animal feeds, while the corn was being milled, the farmer attended to other tasks such as "shoeing" the horse or repairing farm implements. The mill was operational until the 1950's.

Ballaghaderreen The Four Altars Monument:The Four Altars, a ruin of penal times is situated about 3 miles from Ballaghaderreen town centre on the main Sligo Road. It was built by the Costellos of Cregan-na-Grant. The priest who read Mass at the famous Mass rock Aiteentaggart also read mass when circumstances permitted at the four Altars as he resided with the Costellos of Cregan an Gran. While speaking on religious matters of much later times, it is well to note that up until 1873 there were 2 catholic churches which served the environs of Ballaghadereen. One was that of St. Mary's Hall and the other which was located just a few hundred yards from the Four Altars on the Monasteraden Road. No trace of this church remains today, but the Sisters of Charity held class in this church every Sunday after 12 noon mass. This church was replaced by St. Aidan's Church, Monasteraden. Cillin (situated directly behind Four Altars): These ancient burial grounds were used for burials of unbaptised children. This fine example is situated in the Rath and stones mark graves. Directly beside this Rath and Cillin are traces of the original village of Edmondstown. Tohers at Creggane and Callow: Two ancient bog trackways or "tohers" were discovered in the early 1960's. The trackway in Creggane was made of wood and stone and that of the Callow Bog was made of wooden planks only. These

trackways were built primarily to permit the movement of people across the boglands of Ireland. These trackways have been radio carbon dated to 1100 B.C. The Creggane trackway can be reached by taking the first turn left after the Float bridge. It is situated approximately 400 yards along this road. Coolavin: McDermotts House: The McDermott clan originally lived in Boyle (Lough Key) but when the planters came, their lands were acquired by the English and they then moved to the shores of Lough Gara, to the townland of Shroof. The remains of the fortress is still to be seen near one of the sites where the crannogs were discovered. The present day Demesne is built on the site of a former *smaller house. The Coolavin House was built in 1880 and in the grounds of this famous house is the ancient Caiseal. * That smaller house was owned by the Holmes Family. Cashel at Coolavin: This Caisheal is situated on the McDermott Estate in Coolavin. This round stone fort is about 2000 years old. It is about 10 feet high and 15 feet wide with an entrance at the South East. There are also two souterrains in the enclosure and it is believed by Madame McDermott

herself that the timber road at the Float (Creggane) is connected to the Caisheal. Circa 1900 a group of people repaired the Caiseal in an attempt to restore it to its original shape. Directly opposite the Caiseal at Coolavin is the house of a former Protestant Rector. This house was divided into two parts; one half belonged to the R.I.C. Barracks ( again situated below the gate to Coolavin Estate on left hand side of road) and the other was the Protestant Rector's House. The old road leading from the Ballaghaderreen side of the Rector's House was referred to as "The Green Road" which is said to be a further continuation of the timber road at the Coolavin Caiseal. On the left hand side of the Rector's house is the sit e of a Protestant Graveyard. St. Attracta's Well and Crucifixion Plaque: A few hundred yards beyond the impressive entrance to Coolavin House lies St. Attracta's well and Crucifixion Plaque. Enclosed on three sides by walls, the centre is comprised of a limestone flag. The figure of Christ as he hung on the cross is sculptured on this with the instruments of the Passion carved on either side of them. Tradition has it that the work was done in the 17th. century by a local artist. The inscription I.H.S. 1662. 21G is imprinted on the Plaque and it's

maybe it represents the 12 apostles plus Jesus. At the foot of the wall there is a prominent hollow in one boulder. The water in this was believed to cure children who had rickets.

Ballaghaderreen Dr. Douglas Hyde

D

r. Douglas Hyde was born in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon on 17th January 1860. The family moved to Portahard when his father, Rev. Arthur Hyde, (1819 - 1905) was appointed rector here in 1867. Here, as a privileged Anglo-Irish youth, Douglas enjoyed the country life, fishing, hunting and helping out on the farm. Through these activities he became friends with locals such as Seamus Hart, Mrs. Connolly and John Lavin who taught him Irish and instilled in him a love of Irish culture. Dr. Connolly and John Lavin who taught him Irish and instilled in him a love of

Irish culture. From the age of seventeen he began to write prose, poetry and plays in Irish and English. Fearing the imminent demise of the Irish Language and loss of its wealth of oral folktales and songs began collecting this material which he later published in his popular bilingual anthologies such as "Beside the Fire" (1890) and "Love Songs of Connaught" (1893). These works were acknowledged by W.B. Yeats as major sources for the Irish Literary Renaissance. Dr. D. Hyde joined with Yeats, Lady A. Gregory (1852 - 1932), J.M. Synge (1871 - 1909) and others in creating an Irish theatre. He entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1880. An excellent student, he won many prizes for his academic prowess including the gold medal for Modern Literature in 1884. He graduated in 1888 with an LLD Degree. Dr. Hyde married Lucy Kurtz, in 1893 and they had two daughters, Nuala and Una. Also in 1893, he was one of the seven founders of the

Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) and was elected as it's first president, a post he held until 1915. Padraig H. Pearse (1879 1916), the 1916 revolutionary, wrote: "The Gaelic League will be recognised in history as the most revolutionary influence that has ever come into Ireland. The Irish Revolution really began when the seven proto-Gaelic Leaguers met in O'Connell Street. The germ of all future Irish history was in that back room" Dr. Douglas Hyde held the chair for Modern Irish in University College Dublin from 1909 to 1932. His work in reviving the Irish language and his contribution to the formation of the modern Irish identity was symbolically acknowledged by Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) when he was unanimously selected as first President of Ireland in 1938. He died on 12 July 1949 and was given a state funeral to Portahard. He is buried beside his wife Lucy, his daughter Nuala, his sister Annette, mother Elizabeth and father Arthur.

Meet the world's strongest boys:

The Romanian siblings, aged nine and seven, who are put through gruelling two-hour sessions each day

L

ifting 4kg dumb bells and heavy weights for two hours a day would be an impressive fitness regime for an adult. But the gruelling sessions are in actual fact exercises for a pair of Romanian brothers who part of a family dubbed 'The Hercules'. Giuliano Stroe, aged nine, and his seven-year-old brother Claudiu hit the headlines as they trained to be the world's strongest boys in a family of bodybuilders. Now the family could be on their way to Britain after falling on hard times in their homeland and struggling to

find the fame and fortune they hoped would await them while living in Florence, Italy. Iulian Stroe, 35, was determined to make his sons famous and put them through a gruelling two-hour regime each morning while the family lived in Florence. The tiny muscle 'men' have been performing acrobatic feats and lifting weights since they were toddlers. Giuliano has already broken two world records for 90-degree vertical pushups and another holding on to a pole like a human flag. Claudiu followed suit and he is already performing handstand push-ups on a bar and learning the same terrifying flag trick. Both boys routinely lift 4kg dumbbells and heavy weights to work on their biceps and build up their chest muscles. Claudiu started training at a younger age than Giuliano and was copying his older brother at just 18 months old. Now he can do the splits between metal rings and can turn backflips along the ground. The boys are undeniably capable of extraordinary feats -

but it has been suggested that it's cruel to expect children of this age to train so hard. Unable to forge a living for themselves in Italy, Mr Stroe and his sons were forced to return to Romania, where they now make a living from scrap metal trading in the village of Icoana. Mr Stroe now plans to travel to the UK in the hope of finding either work for himself, or a financial sponsor for his sons as he hopes to bring the family's novel weightlifting act to a new audience. Last week nine-year-old Giuliano posted on his Facebook page that his dad was planning a move to the UK so he could work - but he didn't want him to go. 'Who will take care of us? Alone here is sad and dangerous. Help him to get a job near to us. Thank you,' he said. While some people posted positive replies, others were critical of the family's actions.

Puerto Rican woman, 80, appears at funeral - propped up in a rocking chair and wearing her wedding dress

Mr Stroe says he has no choice but to travel to the UK, where he hopes to find other Romanians who will help him find work so he can continue to pay for his sons' training regime. Both Mr Stroe and his wife Ileana defend their training regimen for their boys. 'They have a natural ability for this, nothing is forced, it is what God intended for them,' Mrs Stroe said. 'My husband will go abroad to earn money, as a builder or labourer, and we will use it all for our sons,' she added.

Could this finally be the end of hiding valuables under a towel? Entrepreneur invents holiday beach locker that screws into the sand

I

t's the age-old problem of deciding where to store your valuables at the beach while enjoying a day-time snooze or a dip in the sea. However, an entrepreneur has invented a unique locker that can screw into the sand and hold personal items such as purses, mobile phones, small tablets and money.

Marcal DaCunha's Beach Vault, which is expected to retail for £18, is closed by a special waterproof lid to stop any liquid seeping inside, and then covered by a towel and pillowcase. Whenever a sun-seeker is lying on the towel to relax, the 12ins-deep and 6ins-wide container is completely concealed.

Passing thieves would then have no opportunity to steal any of the valuables if a user fell asleep because they would be on top of the locker. Although the contraption could be picked up and stolen if it was left unattended, Marcal, 29, believes it is less likely to happen than by leaving belongings out in the open. The Beach Vault comes with a special towel that has a hole cut away for easy access, which is covered by an attached, inflatable pillow. DaCunha, a church pastor from New Jersey in the US, said: 'The whole thing started when my wife, Krystal, and I were travelling back from the beach. 'She said "What if we had a container you could put underneath your towel that could hide all of your stuff?" 'The idea was that if you were lying on the towel and you fell asleep you wouldn't have to worry about watching your stuff or trying to keep hold of it while closing your eyes. 'We spoke about it and spent a while making prototypes and coming up with ideas and we

Welcome to my wake:

have now worked with engineers to come up with the Beach Vault. 'The Beach Vault screws into the sand and has a screw-top lid which has been built with a rubber O ring to make it waterproof. 'It is perfect for holding purses, wallets, phones, money, keys, and even has space for a book or an iPad Mini. 'The idea is you then place the towel over the top of it, which has a hole in it so you can access the container, but covered by a built-in pillow. 'This means that when you are lying down you are directly on top of your stuff and you don't have to worry about someone taking anything. 'If you were to leave your stuff unattended the Beach Vault would remain completely out of sight. 'There is nothing to stop a thief from picking the whole thing up and leaving if they knew where it was, but this is the same risk as using a handbag.' Marcal is raising money on a crowdfunding website to go towards the manufacturing of the Beach Vault.

A recently deceased 80-year-old Puerto Rican woman attended her own wake on Monday, just as she had stipulated while she was still alive. The body of Georgina Chervony Lloren took center stage at the ceremony at the Marin Funeral Home in San Juan. Georgina appeared propped up in her favorite red-cushioned rocking chair and she was dressed in the gown from her second marriage 32 years ago. She had also asked to be surrounded by plants and flowers. Her daughter, Miriam Chervony, said her mother specified that this was how she imagined her wake. The Marin Funeral Home is well-known for putting on unusual, thematic wakes. At one wake, a slain boxer was memorialized standing in a makeshift boxing ring. At another, the deceased was propped up on his motorcycle.

Super fireman!

The hi-tech exoskeleton that can give firefighters superhuman abilities

A radical new suit for the firefighter of the future has been revealed that could give them superhuman strength. The exoskeleton would allow firefighters to easily rescue and carry people out of fires, or take heavy equipment up flights of stairs inside a burning building. It can be fitted with a range of gadgets for different mission, including a high pressure water hose that simply clips onto the arm. 'Each year, an estimated 15,500 high-rise structure fires cause 60 civilian deaths, 930 injuries, and $252 million in property loss,' said Melbourne designer Ken Chen. 'High-rise buildings can hold thousands of people well above the reach of fire department aerial devices, once the fire is above the operational reach of aerial ladder or elevating platforms the chance of rescuing victims is near zero.' To help solve the problem, Chen designed a strap on exoskeleton to boost firefighter's strength and allow them to easily climb high buildings. 'The A.F.A exoskeleton suit aim to increases firefighters’ performance in walking ,running and carrying while high-rise fire fighting,' he explained. The suit can carry loads up to 91kg and is strapped over the firefighters’ clothing. The device transfers its weight and any carried loads load directly to the ground, so firefighters don’t bear the weight. The weight of exo-suit is about 23kg, and it measures 1.6meter.

June at the Ballina Arts Centre

Allotments exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre! Throughout the months of June and July, Ballina Arts Centre’s visual arts programme continues to present the best in contemporary Irish art with an exhibition by Northern Irish photographic artist Liam Campbell. Hinterlands is an visual study of allotments and the people who love them. Liam Campbell was born in Northern Ireland, he studied Photography at IADT Dublin 2001-05, before going on to complete his Masters at NCAD Dublin, 2006-07 in Art in the Contemporary World. Liam is interested in alternative ways of living that revolve around ideas of food, he sees food as a social tool and a means and way of bringing people together. His work has featured in numerous solo and

group exhibitions and is part of various collections including Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology, Dublin. He lives and works in Northern Ireland. Official Opening: Wednesday 11th June, 8pm. Hinterlands runs until 2nd August. Admission free. No Crows launch their new album at Ballina Arts Centre! No Crows were formed in 2005, with musical styles ranging from Irish traditional to Latin bossa, and a lot more in between. Sligo bassist Eddie Lee, Mallorcan guitarist Felip Carbonell, Swiss cellist/mandolinist Anna Houston provide the backbone of the band, joined in recent years by renowned Russian gypsy violinist Oleg Ponomarev, who also plays in Yurodny and Koshka, and a multital-

ented guitarist/fiddler, singer/songwriter living in Sligo, Ray Coen. Founding member Steve Wickham still makes regular forays with NoCrows when he is not touring with his other band The Waterboys. Friday, 30th May, 8pm.Tickets: €18 / €15. Booking advised.

Sarah McQuaid Rising star Sarah McQuaid’s voice has been likened to malt whiskey, melted chocolate and “honey poured into wine” (Minor 7th). She performs at Ballina Arts Centre, Saturday, 7th June at 8pm. She seduces her audience with cheeky banter and stories from the road, as well as with stunning musicianship; in her hands, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying instrument. Her musical output reflects her own eclectic background: Sarah was born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holds dual US and Irish citizenship, and now lives in rural England. Sarah’s third solo album The Plum Tree and the Rose has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: “Impeccable,” wrote Roots (UK), while Midwest Record (USA) called it “low key but glorious and incendiary” and Hot Press (Ireland) said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs.” Don Baker is back at Ballina! Ballina Arts Centre welcomes the return of Don Baker, or “The Don”, (the name given to him by his adoring fans), on Friday, 13th June, 8pm. The hugely popular multitalented Irish entertainer, whose expressive skills on the harmonica have drawn accolades from artists as varied as Bono and Christy Moore. This promises to be a special show so book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets: €15 / €12. The Man from Moogaga Aindrias de Staic, comedian, actor, musician and presenter of TG4’S Jig Gig presents his new show The Man from Moogaga, on Thursday 12th June, 8pm. Football, music and mayhem collide in this comic tale of jigs, reels, raggle-taggle and growing up in rural west of Ireland. The show focuses on the life and adventures of

The Man from Moogaga

a young Ceolán from the town of Moogaga. Despite having a natural talent for music the young man has only one goal, to play Gaelic football for his town, and he prioritises this over developing his musical skills. However having neither the skill nor the physique to make the team, and frustrated by life in Moogaga, he decides to travel across Europe and America in the hope that he will find a town like Moogaga that will accept him. He travels far and wide all the time acquiring new musical skills yet at all time driven by the goal to become stronger and play football. In a one-horse town he finds acceptance and love as he learns to play new rhythms but trouble and strife soon follow too… Eventually, The Man from Moogaga

returns home to find his hometown in the football final and desperately in need of something to help them win the match. Can The Man from Moogaga embrace his musical talents in time to inspire his team to win the cup? Tickets: €15/12. Booking essential Creative Writing for Children with Lizanne Gorman Continues until Friday 27th June, 4 – 5pm. 12 week workshop series for children, exploring creativity, poetry, plot, language and other aspects of creative writing. Under the guidance of writer Lizann Gorman, this course promises to be stimulating and fun, and is open to children up to the age of 12. Cost: €5 per workshop. Booking is essential.

to Ridge Pool Rd. The bridge, which was designed to resemble a fishing rod, was opened in July 2009. While Ballina, like most western towns, is still reeling with the impact of the downturn, business closures, etc., there are strong signs that the town is fighting back with some new retail openings in recent months. It is hoped these and existing businesses will benefit from additional spend predicted during the festival week. The festival, which is family-centred, is funded by local contributions and some grant aid and worked on all year round by a group of dedicated volunteers.

ALLINA town will be “where it’s at” from the 6th to 13th July this Summer when the town celebrates with a bumper 50th anniversary festival. The festival, which had humble beginnings

back in 1964, has blossomed into a major national (and even international) event. Most of us old enough to remember will recall the salmon and Guinness days of the ‘sixties and the traditional launch day at Cathedral Road. Coupled with Ballina’s recognition as the Salmon Capital of Europe the hardworking committee is planning the best festival ever and thousands of visitors are expected to pour into the town for the historic event. The famous Ridge Pool, the salmon anglers’ paradise, is located in the heart of the town. The town’s newest bridge, Salmon Weir Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge over the River Moy from Barrett St.

The town is now the largest in County Mayo and the third largest in the province of Connaught, after Galway and Sligo. In the context of the West Region, Ballina forms a major centre in the regional settlement hierarchy and is a focal point for the North Mayo/West Sligo area with a catchment population of in excess of 40,000 people. Despite this apparent “strength” the people of the town have found on so many occasions that it is self-help and local community initiatives like the festival that has provided them with impetus to put the town on the tourist map. The town’s poor showing in the recent local elections will be a concern, with the fear that there will be fewer voices to represent Ballina where it really

matters. However, this will only make the festival committee more determined to make this the best festival ever. It will be a major feature of what promises to be a bumper summer in the region with the commencement of the “Humbert’s Footsteps” event which should kick-off a memorable few weeks in the town. The festivities will commence on Thursday night, June 26th, when last year’s Lady of the Moy will hand over her crown to the new incumbent and winner for this special year. The event will take place in Hotel Ballina, commencing at 8 p.m .

Two two main features of the opening day (6th July) will be traditional Teddy Bear’s Picnic in the newly refurbished Tom Ruane Park (2-5 p.m.). Later in the evening, the town will experience “A Night in Rio”, which should be something to look forward to. As the week progresses the programme will include many of the standard events, including a 10k Road Race on Tuesday and a major Concert with Bagatelle later that night in Hotel Ballina. Wednesday, of course is Heritage Day and whether it rains or shines the crowds seem to flock to Ballina each year for this special event. Similarily, “It’s a Knock-out” in Scoil Padraig

grounds on Thursday evening is always a big attraction. The Krazy Kart race on O’Rahilly Street will be a bumper event again this year on Friday night and most enthusiasts will welcome the return of the Mardi Gras on Saturday night, to be followed by the renowned Fireworks Display. Though this essentially marks the finale to the festival a Duck Race in planned for the river on Sunday, 13th, and some further activities are planned for Ballina Hospital grounds. For visitors coming to the town for the first time it is worth mentioning that Ballina has a very lively entertainment scene with ample choice when it comes to eating out and hitting the town. A long-standing reputation for being a great place to eat out, Ballina has a wide variety of restaurants serving Irish, European and Asian cuisine. It also has a fine choice in late night bars and night clubs. Of course, the town can also boast of

having some of the finest hotels in the country, many of which have built up a distinctive reputation for fine dining and accommodation. The town is well serviced with its road, rail and bus network and is just approximately 50 miles from Knock International Airport. Ballina is the principle service centre in North Mayo. While there are a number of national multiple retailers within the town centre, including Tesco, Penneys, Easons, Shaws, Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Boots, Specsavers, Holland & Barrett, and others, which are all key anchors and attract customers to the town, the traditional businesses are still a major attraction, and continue to provide locals and visitors with an unrivalled range of products and services. Look out for further information on events and times closer to the festival week.

laine McKeon’s interest in food began from a young age. Growing up in Ballincollig, Co.Cork, only six miles from Cork City, Elaine was exposed to the rich food culture and heritage that the city and county have to offer. After achieving her degree in Government and Public Policy in University College Cork, Elaine decided to follow her interest in cooking and to enrol in the Ballymaloe Cookery School and completed the three month cookery course in March 2010. Darina Allen’s passion for seasonal, local produce is contagious and Elaine entered her first chef job in Nash 19, Cork City full of enthusiasm. Luckily for Elaine, Claire Nash was from the same school of thought as Darina Allen, having worked for Mytle Allen in Ballymaloe House. The next two years were an amazing and tough learning experience. During this time, Elaine met Enda McKeon, from Aughacashel, Co. Leitrim. As well as falling in love and marrying Enda in September 2013, Elaine fell in love with Leitrim and although, leaving Cork behind is tough for all Cork people, Elaine embraced her new home fully. Elaine worked as a chef in Shells Café , Strandhill, County Sligo for a year and a half which was a wonderful experience. The support shown by Jane and Myles when Elaine decided to open her own café was outstanding. Their generosity with their knowledge acted as both a practical and emotional support when making the decision to go it alone. The creativity, openness and generosity of Leitrim people always stood out to Elaine, but never more so than when herself and Enda decided to take the leap and open the café Elaine had always dreamt of.

Sweet Geranium only uses salad leaves grown organically in Croghan Organic Gardens, Mary McNutt of Mill Lane, Drumshanbo provides Sweet Geranium with honey and herbs, the coffee is roasted locally in Carrick-on-Shannon by Georgia and Gabor in Art of Coffee, Sweet Geranium only uses free range chicken and eggs, provided by Gannons in Carrick-on-Shannon. All pork used is outdoor reared in Castlemine Farm, County Roscommon and all beef is provided by Scollans Butchers,

35 Drumshanbo and reared on their own farm. Elaine is always excited to hear from local producers who are looking for somewhere to sell their produce. At Sweet Geranium Café, all bread and cakes are freshly baked in house every morning using only the best of ingredients. No preservatives or additives just simple old style cooking and baking. Located on the high street in Drumshanbo, the building itself has a lovely homely feel which is not surprising as it once was two houses. Sweet Geranium offers a full breakfast and lunch menu and is happy to provide outside catering and cakes for special occasions. There is a small shop element to Sweet Geranium stocked with the cafes own jams, breads, chutneys and baking as well as other local producers. Elaine would like to thank the people of Drumshanbo and the surrounding areas for their support. The other businesses in the area have

been exceptional in their well wishes and practical support. Elaine now has a staff of four, Daniel McGirl, Stephanie McTiernan, Orla Dolan and Vicky Brooks who she would like to thank most sincerely as for their hard work and dedication to the café. Sweet Geranium Café is open Monday-Saturday 9.30-5.30 and Sunday 10-2. Telephone 0719640781, facebook.com/sweetgeraniumcafe

Average Farm Incomes Steady

P

reliminary estimates from the Teagasc National Farm Survey’s 2013 results show that the average income level on Irish farms increased slightly in 2013 (up 1%) to €25,639. The stability in the average level, however, masks dramatically contrasting fortunes across the different components of Irish farming. Average dairy farm incomes increased but average incomes

for all the other enterprises decreased. Poor weather in the first quarter of 2013 and the continuing impact of the 2012 fodder crisis led to dramatic increases in feed and fertiliser expenses for all grassland based farming systems. Farmers’ expenditure on purchased concentrate and bulky feed increased dramatically, while in the second half of 2013 expenditure on fertiliser increased as farmers

worked to rebuild depleted stocks of conserved forage. On average direct costs of production increased by 11% when compared with 2012. Cattle rearing family farm incomes declined by 22% due to higher costs of production. Cattle Other and Sheep farm incomes declined by 13% and 39% respectively in 2013 due to lower levels of output combined with higher costs of production. On tillage farms, despite largely stable costs of production and higher yields, lower prices and lower areas harvested led to lower output and lower family farm incomes. On dairy farms despite large increases in costs of production (+11%) average incomes increased strongly due to both higher prices (+23%) and increased levels of milk output per hectare (+11%). In 2013, the average Irish farm received 8% less in direct payments as compared to 2012 due to reductions in single payment receipts, agri-environmental payments (REPS) and

Dr Kevin Hanrahan, Teagasc Agricultural Economics and Farm Surveys department said: “On average, the dependence of family farm income on subsidies declined in 2013 as compared to 2012. However, on Cattle Rearing, Cattle Other and Sheep farms direct payments still accounted for significantly more than family farm incomes.

Detox your Liver T

he liver is one of the most important organs that help the natural detoxification process within the body. Human bodies need healthy livers to fight against the environmental toxins. The liver also helps in healing the immune system and is an important part of digestion. The liver prepares glycogen, which can be converted into glucose by the body in times of need. It can store quantities of glycogen enough for up to 24 hours. The liver is one of the natural detoxifying agents of the body. The human body is exposed to toxins every day. Hormones influencing physical and mental well-being are activated in the liver. The liver further breaks them down into water-soluble substances and they are passed out through stool and urine. Excessive storage of toxins in the body hampers the natural processes of the liver. Some of the most common symptoms are a chronic fatigue, headaches, and a diminished bile flow. Impaired liver functions can cause viral infections of the liver and alcohol induced fatty deposits. The best time for a liver detox is spring. The warm weather is the perfect time for a diet full of filtered water, raw fruits and vegetables. A liver flush is one of the most simple and popular types of cleansing techniques. It is used for the elimination of excess

fatty acids and other toxic substances from the liver. The liver flush can be described as a regimen of light exercise supported with an intake of herbal teas and the liver flush mixture. The liver flush mixture is a mixture of freshly squeezed citrus and lemon or lime juices, squeezed garlic and a small amount of ginger root juice, added with one tablespoon of olive oil. A natural food diet has to be consumed for the rest of the day. This regimen should be taken for at least ten days. The liver cleansing formula should be

taken for at least two weeks. Milk thistle is a natural herb that has been known to have strengthening and healing powers over the liver. It is an antioxidant and can protect the liver from radical damage. The herb is available in tablet form and in major natural foods stores. Milk thistle can be consumed after performing the liver flush. Detox provides detailed information on Detox, Detox Diet, Drug Detox, Alcohol Detox and more. Detox is affliated with Drug Detoxification.

Ballina Salmon Festival 2014 50th Anniversary 6th-13th July 2014

With the summer fast approaching, work is well underway for the Ballina Salmon Festival’s Golden Anniversary which boasts a programme full of events for young and old alike. The fun kicks off on Sunday afternoon July 6th with the Teddy Bears Picnic, followed in the evening by “A Night in Reo”. The festivities continue throughout the rest of the week with The Garth Brooks experience in Hotel Ballina on Monday and a 10k fun run on Tuesday. Heritage Day on Wednesday gives festival goers a glimpse into the past, featuring various crafts people display their skills of Tinsmith, Thatching, Buttermaking and Woodturning to name but a few, all enjoyed amidst the traditional music and dancing plus more that fills the streets. The ever popular Garda Band will also be heard throughout the town and as a special treat this year, ‘Sliabh na mBan’; the historical armoured car that carried the coffin of the iconic Michael Collins will also be on display. It’s a Knockout is back on Thursday and Krazy Kart makes a comeback on Friday. The Mardi Gras is back by popular demand on Saturday evening followed by a spectacular Fireworks Display over the River Moy. It all winds down on Sunday with the River Duck Race during the day and International Night on the streets in the evening followed by music and a Garth Brooks tickets raffle in the Broken Jug. If all of this is not enough there will also be a separate programme of events and workshops tailored especially for children running daily. Ballina is the place to be this July and under the leadership of our chairperson Benny Walkin we hope to make this year our best yet with a week full of entertainment, excitement and memories of festivals gone by.
