ith a recent survey revealing that 13% of teenagers have active profiles on adult dating and "hookup" app Tinder, and disturbing evidence of online child pornography activity originating in Ireland, parents are being urged to exercise stricter controls on their children's handheld web activity. The Studyclix survey conducted with up to 5,000 secondary school students in Ireland also revealed that 55% of those questioned felt that they were "addicted" to their smartphones, with Facebook being the greatest online draw. Sligo-based founder of the Irish study website, Luke Saunders, admitted "I couldn't believe it," going on to say “It calls in to question online safety for our students. As a secondary school teacher, it is very clear to me in my day to day teaching that the use of phones in school has increased and is very hard to monitor or safeguard". One fourteen year old Donegal student offered up the following response when asked about his activity on adult dating sites, "It's only a bit of fun. I don't know anyone who has actually met up with an older person for a date, it's just pictures and a bit of chat." However, the truth is glaringly obvious that there are obvious risks to such activity, specifically with an app like Tinder, which links people up using photographs and geolocation. With the disturbing news in recent weeks of Europol investigating online activity relating to child pornography and abuse here in Ireland, the largely unlimited web access offered by the smartphone in student's pockets becomes more sinister. The world celebrates Mayo Day
A large crowd gather to see "The General" the story of Humberts Arrival in Kilalla which led to The Races of Castlebar. The show on Market Square castlebar showcased the best Of Irish Dance, Music and Singing for the Mayo Day Celebrations. Pic: Michael Mc Laughlin
I
T may have been the inaugural year of the event but International Mayo Day (on Saturday, May 2nd) has definitely taken legs and is destined to be a major day of celebration throughout the globe in years to come. It’s significance has been noted, also, on social media with only Britain’s new
“arrival” attracting more attention. There were more than 60 events across the county and across the world – in Toronto Philadelphia, Cleveland and Manchester, from Melbourne to Sydney - people celebrated. Even the Niagra Falls cascaded in green and red. Martina Hughes, Communications and Diaspora
Executive with Mayo County Council said that almost 5 million people made contact with the Mayo Day web page. Some spectacular events – music, dancing, Humbert reenactments - took place in the Square in Castlebar on Saturday evening. Even the inclement weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm. But the flagship
event in the TF Royal Theatre on Saturday, televised live on Irish TV, surpassed all expectations when almost 900 guests enjoyed a night of unrivalled entertainment. Hosted by Mayo native Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain the concert included Mundy (backed in spectacular fashion by the Clew Bay Pipe Band), Matt Molloy, boy band Hometown, Lisa Canny, Bernadette Ruddy, and host of other entertainers. Among those who addressed the enthusiastic audience were An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, and Peter Hynes, Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, who praised all involved in the organisation of the day and highlighted all that was good and positive about the country. It is significant that Mayo is the first county in Ireland to organise such an initiative. Is there any other country with the same world-wide spread as Mayo? In the years to come it is expected that more communities and businesses will embrace the concept as the see its potential, particularly for the tourist market.

Parents urged to pay more attention to children's online activity Continued from front page Smartphones circumvent a lot of the parental controls that are easily available on home computers, and there is an almost unlimited selection of apps and websites at the touch of a screen. Many parents are unaware of the potential risk of many 'harmless' apps such as Snapchat (which allows users
to share photographs that 'disappear' after a few seconds) and Tumblr (a photo- and video-sharing site which has very few restrictions on content). And cyber-bullying is still a problem among young internet users, with a quarter of Irish teens admitting they have been witness to such activity online. The answer is not to ban
smartphones from students outright, however. As Luke Saunders explains, they can be extremely useful for study and academic research among school age children. "Smart phones offer the opportunity for students to study online. In the last twelve months we have seen 120% growth of students studying on their phones."
Instead, many parental advice websites and services are recommending steps such as monitoring the apps downloaded onto children's phones regularly, installing one of the many parental control apps available, and most importantly, having frank and open discussions with your children about their online safety.
Foxford rocking for Pa Roche! By Catherine Gilmartin The 'Pa Roche Tribute Nite' was a roaring success last Friday night, 1st May, in the Browne Memorial Hall, Foxford. It was packed as people
of all ages came out to show their support and respect for the memory of Pa, a Ballina man, (formerly of Moygrove, Foxford). The atmosphere was electric and the craic mighty as young and old

danced to the great live music, played by bands such as RiffRaff, Christina Forde, Southbound, Frank & Noel, Black Penny, Jerome Taheny, Dennis McCalmont, Na Doirse, Phase Band, Stumblin Bloc,
Padraig Meehan, Mississippi Sheiks and Piston Slappers. Mick Smith, one of the organisers, said: “The Pa Roche Tribute night was a celebration of Pa's life. He connected with many people over the years through music; either by playing in the bands or giving music lessons. His family and friends had talked of how to celebrate his memory in a fitting manner and this seemed the best way to do that”. Mick, a Ballina man, friend and musician, also went on to say: “We chose The Brown Memorial Hall as the venue, because it was a place where Pa and many of us played in our youth, so it added to the magic of the night. Everyone who was present on the night, audience, musicians, stage, crew and bar staff alike brought memories and stories to tell and it created a wonderful coming together.” Like many a musician he died too young and is missed by many. Appeals to join Ireland’s Largest Coastal Clean Up Clean Coasts Ambassador, Pro Surfer & Donegal’s own Easkey Britton has just launched Clean Coasts Week which takes place from 8th – 17th May.
T
he Pro Surfer has called for volunteers in Donegal, Sligo, Mayo and Galway to join Ireland’s largest coastal clean-up. The Coca-Cola Clean
Coasts Week 2015 invites everybody to get involved in protecting and celebrating a beach they love. A recent United Nation Environment
Programme (UNEP) report estimated that 8 million individual litter items enter the marine environment every day. This is certainly evident along Ireland’s coastline. In 2014 Clean Coasts groups removed a staggering 500,000 marine litter items from our beaches. Marine Litter includes a range of materials which have been deliberately discarded, or accidentally lost on shore or at sea. It includes materials that are carried out to sea from land, rivers, drainage, sewerage systems and even by the wind. Speaking at the launch Easkey Britton, Clean Coasts Ambassador, said: “Clean Coasts Week is about the power of the ocean to connect. Through coming together to celebrate our coasts at Clean Coasts events around the country and by joining local groups for beach clean-ups we create a stronger sense of community, a community connected by the sea. No matter how challenging the problem of marine litter might seem, together, even a small act can lead to positive change.” Speaking at the launch Annabel FitzGerald, Clean Coasts Manager, An Taisce, said: “We are expecting more than 100 beaches to be cleaned by thousands of volunteers during Clean Coasts Week. Every piece of litter removed whether as part of a large beach clean or a #2MinuteBeachClean is one less
item that will pollute our oceans or be ingested by marine life.” She added, “Donegal County Council have organised a series of lunch time talks in coastal libraries around the County as part of the week also.” Other such events may take place in the other counties. Speaking at the launch, Erica Roseingrave, Public Affairs & Communications Manager, Coca-Cola Hellenic Ireland said, “While Clean Coasts activities take place all year round, the impact during Clean Coast week is significant. Year on year more and more volunteers are joining Ireland’s largest coastal cleanup. The week is a great opportunity to connect with your local Clean Coasts group and to take part in events all over Ireland.” In addition to the many beach cleans that will be taking place there are also Coastal Celebration events, including the National #2MinuteBeachClean Day, launch of Love Your Coast photography competition, film screenings, Coastal talks, Beat the Microbead Day and lots more. While all events are free, some are ticketed; people are encouraged to check out the website for more details. www.cleancoasts.org. It provides details of clean-up activities around the four counties. Intending participants can also register now www.cleancoasts.org

T
he superb Mayo traditional music and dance show ‘The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol’ lifted anchor this week and set sail at full mast for its seventh summer season in Westport. The show that has enthralled thousands of visitors to the west of Ireland is docking at a new port this summer with the cast and crew disembarking every Sunday and Wednesday
night from June 17th at the new state-of-the-art Westport Town Hall. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD was at the helm for the official launch this week describing the show as a ‘must see for anyone visiting Mayo or the west of Ireland this summer’. “I am thrilled and delighted that the Gráinne Mhaol show is
one of the first productions that will have access to the newly refurbished Westport Town Hall Theatre. This show is produced in Westport, it features a host of top class Mayo performers and it is based on a local legend, the Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley,” he said. Over the past six years the Gráinne Mhaol show has received glowing reviews with Tripadvisor stating the show is ‘one of the best in Ireland’ with the Irish Times calling the show ‘a magical production that everyone will enjoy’. The show every Sunday and Wednesday evening from June 17th is an inspiring epic, reliving the journey of the Irish legend Gráinne Mhaol or Grace O’Malley throughout history. The show features some of Ireland’s best known and most gifted musicians, dancers and singers including James Kilbane, Pollyanna Guedes, Darragh Healy, Liam Scanlon, Roisin Timoney and Monica Brennan. The show is full of energy and
enthusiasm and guarantees to keep audiences of all ages gripped from start to finish as it blends the old and the new; the contemporary and the ancient in a performance of strength and passion. This incredible, unique, entertainment show will see a host of new features added this summer with new music, songs and storyline all being introduced. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD described the show at the launch this week as a key tourism enterprise for Mayo. “This is a superb summer show and it is a very important tourism initiative for Westport and Mayo each summer. I encourage everyone to come and see this show as they will not be disappointed,” commented Minister Ring. Tickets for the show are available from Westport Town Hall Box Office at (098) 28459 or online from www.westporttownhall.ie or www.grainnemhaol.com.

R
oscommon-born artist Joe Caslin may be making waves in the art world, but his recent project is causing quite a stir in the capital city. A giant mural on George’s Street in Dublin, depicting two men embracing, is generating major controversy and debate ahead of the same-sex marriage referendum. The Roscommon Town native says he cannot believe the reaction to his work, which has attracted the ire of the No campaign and resulted in a warning notice from planning
officials at Dublin City Council. The planning officials have issued a warning notice in relation what they say is an “unauthorised status” on the side of a building on South Great George’s Street. The image of two men embracing was created by the artist who said it was attached “like wallpaper” to the side of the four storey building overnight. However, because of its perceived links to the Yes campaign in the forthcoming referendum, a debate ensued as to whether it required planning permission and
Lennon
Environmental
whether it should be removed. Mr Caslin has stated that he would like to see the work remain until the vote, and possibly shortly afterwards. Joe (32), who is from Ardnanagh, Roscommon, is an accomplished artist who has enjoyed great success in recent years with his series of large scale public art pieces. The pieces have addressed various issues affecting young men, including suicide, mental health and emigration. In his day job he teaches Leaving and Junior Cert art at Tullamore College. The giant mural, which was posted on the gable end of a building on the corner of South Great George’s Street was based on a drawing, which was then printed up and applied “kind of like wallpaper but on a massive scale”, Joe
explained. The giant mural is based on the famous National Gallery painting ‘The Meeting on the Turret Stairs’ about a princess and her bodyguard who fall in love but aren’t allowed to marry. The National Gallery painting is a piece Joe teaches on the Leaving Cert curriculum and he thought it a perfect base for his own piece. “Here we are 1,000 years later and we’re still talking about a higher power – the State not letting a union of two people being fully recognized and that’s the core thing – it’s just about love,” Joe said. “I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinion; but it’s a part of our society and that’s what I’m trying to show. He makes no apologies and says that his work has always been political.

€1m funding shortfall for Leitrim Council
Cllr Enda Stenson
L
eitrim County Council has a €1m shortfall in funding to cover labour costs under the 2015 Road Works Programme. At a recent meeting to
discuss the Roads Programme with councillors, Council Management confirmed there was a ‘serious’ funding shortfall this year due to cutbacks.
At Monday’s Carrick Municipal District meeting, Cllr Enda Stenson asked if it would be feasible for the Council to employ short term staff to carry out works.
He was told the funding shortfall was the reason why the Council would not be able to employ any part time staff. It was noted that previously Council members had supported a call for a meeting to be sought with the Department of Transport to secure additional monies. Director of Service, Joseph Gilhooley noted the meeting had not yet been confirmed but said local Oireachtas members had assured the Council it would go ahead. “The employment of short term staff is not on the horizon for 2015,” he acknowledged. “The priority this year is to pay (existing) staff.” A statement issued by the Council stressed that approximately 30% of the Council’s road grant contributes towards wages costs. “The Council are currently looking at all options and will continue to exhaust all alternative sources of funding” in order to meet the funding shortfall.
Milestone for Ballina Athletic Club
Giant Leap for Mayo Athletics - Minister of State for Sport Michael Ring TD. leaped over all hurdles after officialy opening Ballina Athletic Club's new €600,000 "state of the art" all-weather athletic track to the delight of Ireland's Silver Olympic athlete Sonia O"Sullivan , John Tracy CEO Sports Council of Ireland, Ballina Athletic Club's Chairperson Elizabeth Murphy and young local athletes. Picture Henry Wills
M
ay 1st (2015) will live long in the memory of Ballina Athletic Club members and supporters with the opening of their new IAAF Standard track at Belleek. The re-development of the track represents an investment of over €600,000 in the community from a combination of Ballina Town Council (as it was then, Department of Sport, IPB
and County Council (Councillors). Among those present were Minister for Sport Mr. Michael Ring, T.D. (who performed the official opening), two Olympic silver medallists – Sonia O’Sullivan and John Treacy (also CEO of the Irish Sports Council), John Foley, CEO Athletics Ireland, a host of public representatives, in addition to the local
committee and supporters. This new track is amongst the best in Ireland and as well as enhancing the facility for existing members, it will also attract new members of all ages. Addressing the gathering Club Chairperson Elizabeth Murphy, thanked all the distinguished guests for their presence and Minister of State, Mr. Ring for his support and per-
forming the opening and, in particular, the members, young and old: “These are the ambassadors, who put on their runners, week-in and week-out to participate in recreational and competitive events . . .” She also thanked all the volunteers . . . the juvenile coaches, fit4life leaders and the committee. “In addition to the commitment to the facility, nearly all of them have a passion for running . . .” She mentioned, in particular, her father, Tom Horkan, who was her inspiration and Michele Reynolds, who co-founded Ballina fit4Life with her in 2009. She praised Mayo Co. Council Parks Superintendent Peter Gill, who encouraged her to “think big” from the start, and Paul Benson who was Acting Manager for Ballina Town Council at the time. She said Ballina was lucky to have two sitting TDs, Deputies Michelle Mulherin and Dara Calleary, who supported the project from the outset, in addition to the former Town Councillors and elected members of Mayo County Council. She paid tribute to Ballina town Soccer Club for accommodating them during the construction. She particularly thanked Minister for Sport Deputy Michael Ring, who got the project off the starting blocks in December 2013 . . . and for adding “that touch of magic to make all our dreams come true”.

Dog crashed a truck into a swimming pool ‘When she gets scared, she’ll go down on the floorboard of the truck,’ Mr. Smith told WRAL. He added that it was his wife who was driving at the time, and though he tried to pull the dog off, he was unable to. We hit the water and I’m going “where in the name of God is this water coming from,”‘ he said. Fortunately, the owners of the pool, John McNamara and his wife, were in at the time. Michael Smith sustained some cuts to his hands but was otherwise unharmed. ‘I don’t blame her for it,’ he said of his dog. ‘Just one of them odd accidents that you read about in the newspaper or see on the news.’
Michael Smith says he doesn’t blame Caroline for the accident
A
black labrador managed to drive a truck into a swimming pool after it got scared and sat on the pedals. According to Michael and Ruth Smith, Caroline the dog was sat in the back of the car as the couple drove to the local
supermarket in North Carolina. But something spooked Caroline and she dived into the footwell of the driver’s seat, putting the pedal to the floor and sending the Dodge Ram pickup truck across a car park, through a fence and into a swimming pool.
Woman, 91, fined £100 for noisy rocking chair
A 91-year-old woman has been fined $148 (£100) for ‘disturbing the peace’ with her rocking chair. Neighbours complained to the police who turned up and issued a ticket to the pensioner in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada. Those who live nearby also complained about the TV volume. But police are reviewing their response after a lawyer waded in. Charles Cantin says he’s trying to find a way to have the ticket cancelled and claims the police handled the situation badly. ‘I don’t think this is a good way to settle that matter,’ Cantin said.
Man gets cooked alive alongside thousands of tuna in industrial oven
Woman takes wrong flight home, ends up in Barbados
I
t must be pretty annoying to discover that your plane has landed in the wrong destination – but that blow would surely be softened when you realise that you’re now in Barbados. That’s what happened to Azizgul Hussainzada, when she flew home from California. She was due to return to Rochester in Upstate New York, but received a blast of warm tropical air as she got off the plane in Barbados. It’s thought that the mix-up occurred when Hussainzada ended up on the wrong connection flight at New York’s JFK airport, as she can’t speak English and was led onto the wrong JetBlue airliner. But while most of us would see the mistake as an opportunity to soak up some rays, it quickly turned into a nightmare for Hussainzada, as she’s diabetic and didn’t have her medication. She was eventually flown home by JetBlue, and received a refund for her ticket. ‘When she got off in Barbados, she thought that she was in Rochester’, her son Noorullah Maqsoodi explained. ‘And she was like, what happened to Rochester? This looks a lot different.’ JetBlue have said they plan to review their boarding protocol.
A man has been cooked to death alongside thousands of tuna in an industrial oven. Jose Melena, 62, was carrying out maintenance in the 35ft-long oven in Santa Fe Springs, LA, when a co-worker filled the cooker with tuna and turned it on – believing Jose had taken a break. An announcement was made on the intercom when supervisors realised he was missing. His body was found two hours later after the pressure cooker, which reached a temperature of 270 degrees. Two managers at Bumble Bee Foods have been charged with violating safety regulations. Angel Rodriguez, 63, and Saul Florez, 42, could face up to three years in prison. Bumble Bee Foods said in a statement: ‘We remain devastated by the loss of our colleague Jose Melena in the tragic accident. ‘We disagree with and are disappointed by the charges filed by the Los Angeles district attorney’s office.’

Improve Your Hearing
H
EARING is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear. It is one of the traditional five senses. The inability to hear is called deafness. Most people are prone to loss-of-hearing or getting bad hearing as they get older. Hearing cannot be restored with medicines. In such case, you will need hearing aids to compensate for your lack of hearing. This article will talk about the things you can do to improve your hearing now, while it's still fully functional. Here are five assorted tips and drills you can do to make sure you maintain your hearing ability. Maintenance is Important Avoid loud noises, as these can damage your eardrums. Listening to loud music or with plug-in headphones as opposed to the foam or rubber types that just nestle on your ears is a quick way to lose hearing. Being subjected to incredibly loud, shrill, and irritating noises every day such as power tools in your workplace or road-works are detrimental to your hearing. Avoid them at all cost.
Regular EENT (eyes, ears, nose & throat) Check-ups Add visiting an EENT doctor to your list of bi-annual check-ups alongside your usual ones, like visits to the dentist and general medical check-ups. This helps maintain all your senses, not just hearing. EENTs can give you preventive medications to treat any mild problems you may have with hearing before these worsen.
Vitamins and Medication There are four vitamins and medications that have been tested and proven to help in the maintenance of hearing. These haven't been noted to significantly enhance a person's hearing acuity, but they have been known to prevent the deterioration of hearing ability. These four vitamins, with corresponding dosages, are the following: AcetylCarnitine (150mg a day), Alpa-Lipoic acid (150 mg a day), Glutathione (50 mg a day), and Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg a day).
a station that plays a moderately fast music. It shouldn’t be too loud. Then, talk to a friend. Do not raise your voice and carry on a conversation without leaning in to hear-better. Then after a few minutes, add a second radio playing a different music. Then later throw in a third... you get the picture. This helps you filter out any extraneous noise and improves
your ear's ability to pick out only the sounds you want to hear.
Keeping Your Ears Clean Bacteria, (known as “wax”) builds up in ears very fast. Although this is the case, a small amount of bacteria is actually good for your ears. It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides
some protection from other bacteria, fungi, insects and water. But excess wax can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory canal and impair hearing. That is why it is essential to use ear-buds or sprays to clean your ears twice or three times a month. Avoid cleaning your ears everyday as this will irritate your ears.
Sound Source Location Exercise Here is the first drill for sharpening your hearing. This helps your ear's directional sense and requires a partner. Get some small noisemaker like a horn or even a small radio speaker. Go to a large room with very little acoustic bounce off and furniture. If you can do this in an open-air environment so much the better, but you'll look a bit funny to any passer-by so you might want to find a private spot. Now, the drill is simple. Starting at a regular distance get your partner to sound off small two or three-second bursts around you. Then just point where the noise came from. Limit your choices initially to the eight compass points (including northeast etc). Later on, vary the drill by having your partner alter the distance at which he sounds off. You should not only name directions, but the approximate distance away from where the noise was made. Noise Filtering Exercise This drill is for filtering sound and it's simple to do also. Tune in to
