hile most people would balk at mention of Christmas coming so early in the year, there is one instance where it's important to mention the looming event. Budgeting is always difficult, in times of economic recovery, but it is people at the lowest end of the income bracket who tend to struggle the most in the lead-up to the festive season. And, unfortunately there are plenty of enterprising, legal and illegal lending businesses out there that will capitalise on this struggle. While for many years now there has been talk of a crackdown on the illegal lending trade, with Sligo councillor Marc MacSharry publishing a bill (which unfortunately wasn't passed) in 2013 to this end and countless others highlighting it as an area that needs to be addressed, we have seen very little action actually taken. Such individuals and gangs in society who prey on the poorest should surely be held accountable for their actions. As Senator MacSharry himself has said with regard to the matter, "We cannot afford to ignore the factors that are fuelling the loan shark business in Ireland. We need to get tough with those taking advantage of people in desperate financial difficulty" and further, that "We need to act and legislate for this as matter of urgency." Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of councillors like MacSharry, such legislation has not yet come into effect and the cycle looks set to continue with the increasing numbers of options for high-interest lending available in today's market. otel Westport has been awarded, by public vote, this year’s Best Family Friendly Hotel in the ‘Hotel & Catering Review Gold Medal Awards’. The awards recognise and reward excellence in hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, spas, clubs and catering operations across the island of Ireland. The awards were presented at a gala ceremony in the Double Tree Hilton Hotel, (formerly the Burlington Hotel), on Monday 22nd September 2014. The

involvement in the hospitality industry in Ireland. There were also other winners from the west and north-west. Located on the shores of Lough Eske, family run Donegal 4 Star Hotel, Harvey’s Point Hotel received the Wine Experience Award (sponsored by Classic Drinks). Situated in Barna, County Galway, O’Grady’s on the Pier received the Best Seafood Restaurant Award. 2014 is the second year that the award-winning events team at Ashville Media Group has managed these awards. During this period, the event has grown considerably with a 31% increase in entries since last year. This year’s awards were made up of 25 categories and premises across Ireland made the shortlist. Event Director, Tracey Carney said: “The evening was a great success and we were delighted to celebrate and recognise the tireless hard work of the Irish hospitality industry. It’s great to see their efforts paying off because it benefits the whole country. Tourism numbers are up, with the latest figures from the CSO showing a 10.3% rise in overseas tourists in the first six months of this year, compared to the same period last year. That’s in no small part due to the excellent work of people like our finalists and winners and we want to acknowledge that.”

High Interest Loans A Danger For Winter Season Continued from front page: We are all familiar with the term 'loan shark', and the frightening, often grossly aggressive means they can employ to retrieve greatly inflated sums from their clients. But it can be surprisingly difficult to make the right choice in a market saturated with legal 'payday loans' companies and flashy internet advertising for high interest lending sites as well. Unregulated, illegal lending still exists, but almost as risky is the legal side of the same business. With many of these legal money-lending companies loaning short-term, high interest amounts (often at APRs almost as high as a loan shark) advertising directly to the unemployed, or people with bad credit ratings and mortgage arrears, there is no doubt that they capitalise on late repayments. And though the legal side of the industry can't be said to exercise the same level of intimidation and bullying that

illegal lenders are renowned for, that's not to say they have not been found to exert significant pressure on their clients when moneys are not paid on time. Credit Unions have long been recognised as a safe and responsible low interest alternative to traditional borrowing or high interest options, but as highlighted by Independent MEP Marian Harkin at the 25th anniversary conference of the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation last month, these community-based financial institutions are facing their own troubles. Currently, there are over 450 credit unions forced to place their surplus funds on deposit with banks at a rate of less than 1% rather than loan, at reasonable rates, to valid customers. Ms Harkin was clear in her message: “The Credit Union movement must not be unnecessarily hindered in its hugely important work of credit provision and must instead be encouraged to use its

experience and expertise to help citizens in Ireland to avoid the clutches of extortionate moneylenders” Manager of Sligo Credit Union, Barry O'Flynn reassures that despite tougher measures being implemented by the Central Bank, Credit Unions are still lending, and creating a sufficient saving record with them is not overly difficult. His advice to anyone facing into the expense of the approaching festive season is simple; "We encourage anyone who is in a position to do so to join their credit union and create a record with them... Moneylenders make it easy for people to get loans - the cost is however, oppressive... If we could get one message across, it is that availing of credit from legal and illegal moneylenders may appear easy but the cost is more than 10 times normal credit and the greater cost is being tied into immoral and unjustified costs for many years."

Knock Airport passengers exceed 100,000 for August

Pictured celebrating the 100,000th passenger through Ireland-West Airport Knock in the month of August, a record for the airport, was left to right, Joe Gilmore, Managing Director, Ireland West Airport Knock, Philip McGlynn, Bundoran, Co. Donegal (100,000th passenger) and Sarah Rowley, Head of Airline and Customer Airline Services, Ireland-West Airport, Knock.

A

MIDST all the political controversy last week came the news that Ireland West Airport Knock recorded another major milestone last month experiencing its busiest ever month with a total of 102,774 passengers passing through the terminal in August - the first time in the 28-year history that over 100,000

passengers have used the airport in a calendar month. This landmark follows record passenger numbers in the month of July (91,028) an 18% increase on July 2013 whilst the August figures represented a 20% increase on passenger numbers in August 2013. August traffic to/from the UK was up 21% on August

2013, while passenger traffic to/from mainland and continental Europe increased by 16%, highlighting again the airport’s importance as the main Western gateway for the Wild Atlantic Way & the West & North West of Ireland. The airport’s main airline partners, Flybe, Aer Lingus, Ryanair & Germanwings showed an increase in

passenger numbers and record load factors compared to August 2013. Ireland West Airport is on track to record the busiest year on record with passenger numbers expected to reach 700,000 for the first time. The Airport now serves 25 International destinations and is served by four of Europes biggest airlines. Commenting on the record numbers, Joe Gilmore, Managing Director Ireland West Airport, said “We are delighted to have recorded our busiest month in the airports history for the second consecutive month. It’s a very proud milestone to reach 100,000 passengers in a month and milestones like this demonstrate that passengers are increasingly choosing the convenience of flying from their regional airport when the flights and holidays they want become available and also for those overseas visitors who want to fly directly into the heart of the West of Ireland. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the airport staff in particular for their hard work and support in achieving this significant milestone for the airport and we look forward to many more milestones in the coming years’

Naturist conference a boost for Drumshanbo

T

here were plenty of jokes, giggles and remarks made about the Naturist Congress in Drumshanbo at the weekend, but the event also brought plenty of positive publicity for Leitrim from national and international media. The congress focused on Naturist Tourism but it also evident that if the legal situation was clearer in Ireland we could gain back vital UK and EU visitors looking to bare all on holidays. The well organised press conference had English, French and Dutch translators to cater for the delegates from 25 countries. Some delegates travelled over 30 hours from Australia and South Africa to attend the 34th congress in Drumshanbo, while others flew in from Brazil, Canada and across Europe. At least half of the delegates attended the congress naked, and despite the initial shock of seeing men and women representing their countries without any clothes on, the amusement wore off as the congress settled down to serious business. Laws and

tourism promotion, falling membership and local restrictions made up the main concerns for the international organisation. Many of those who attended spent at least a week in Ireland, while those who were only over for the weekend were treated to trips to the Arigna Mines, Parke’s Castle and enjoyed the private use of Lough Allen Hotel’s spa facilities during their stay. Neil McManus of Lough Allen Hotel said they were “privileged” to host the congress and wished them a wonderful time in the county. The hotel staff said locals had been amused by the event, but everyone would receive a real Leitrim welcome. Eamon Scully led the Irish Naturist Association and welcomed all the delegates to Ireland. The International Naturist Federation (INF-FNI) represents the interests of more than 5 million naturists world wide. Each delegate outlined their country’s policy on naturist tourism and it was Ireland that fared the worst with nudity being outlawed here. The congress said it

supported the INA’s efforts “to make naturism better understood in Ireland and to have suitable beaches designated for naturism around the country. Ireland, with its long coastline, has many secluded beaches which would be perfect for naturists.” Eamon Scully said he felt that Ireland is losing out on the growing worldwide naturist tourism market. The provision of officially approved naturist facilities would draw tourists to Ireland. Mike Ayers, Vice President said that although Ireland was generally a welcoming country “it has not a lot to offer naturists” despite the huge tourism potential the sector provides.

Eamon Scully made a link between the top tourist countries France, Spain and USA and the fact they have naturist beaches, venues and clubs. The congress heard the UK are large exporters of naturists. The UK does have naturist beaches, a naturist spa hotel and a lot of naturist campers, but surveys show they like to visit naturist venues while abroad. The delegates who all wore name tags around their necks were informed that they could be naked in the conference centre, half of the boardwalk and in the pool area during the designated hours, but were reminded that nudity is illegal and was not allowed in the public bar.

“Diluted” fuel wreaks havoc in North Mayo I

T is now believed that well over 100 motorists in east Mayo will lose of thousands of euro, after their cars were extensively damaged by what is called ‘petrol stretching’.The practice involves adding up to 10 percent of kerosene to petrol, thereby ‘stretching’ or diluting the fuel. Contaminated fuel has reportedly been sold in recent weeks in the Swinford and Foxford areas, and many motorists who unwittingly put it into their vehilces are now facing repair bills of several thousand euro. Almost 400 people attended a public meeting on Tuesday last in Swinford to voice their anger and share their stories. People from all over the county, as well as parts of Galway and Sligo, attended, all seeking answers after their vehicles were damaged. Fine Gael deputy Michelle Mulhern also raised some controversy when she accused Sinn Fein of not showing adequate concern about the issue, making references to the IRA’s association with fuel laundering in the past. She also referred to the absence of Fine Fein representatives at the meeting. The meeting was chaired by local man Paddy McNulty, who says his car engine has been destroyed by diluted fuel.. “I’m completely out of pocket and there doesn’t seem to be any redress. My car was making funny noises at the end of August, so I

brought it to my local garage. They didn’t think anything was wrong, but when I brought it back after doing a bit more mileage they said the engine was gone [due to] fuel contamination,” said Mr McNulty, adding that he got all his fuel in a filling station in Swinford. Mr McNulty said he believes the stretched petrol, or ‘jungle juice’ as he calls it, was delivered in June and that the damage to most cars was only coming to light in the last number of weeks. “The newer the car the quicker they went,” he said. The Swinford man, who has spent €2,000 repairing his car, explained that he was lucky to get his hands on a secondhand engine. Other people with newer cars are facing bills of up to €7,000 for replacement engines, he said. Sergeant Richard Taheny of Swinford Garda Station has urged anyone affected to visit the station to make a statement. They should also supply as much information about the vehicle – such as service history, NCT, fuel receipts – as possible. Though fuel samples have been taken from filling stations in east Mayo, Mr McNulty believes there is no contaminated fuel left. “I don’t know will we ever get to the bottom of it. Forecourts are getting samples taken now but they’re ok, the contaminated fuel is gone,” said McNulty. “The horse has bolted and there’s a mess left.” According to Mr

McNulty, Aviva Insurance is the only insurance company that covers fuel contamination under its policies. However, Cllr Annie May Reape has indicated that AXA Insurance may also now be prepared to deal with claims. Following her attendance at the meeting last week, Deputy Michelle Mulherin tabled a motion for debate in the Daíl, asking the Minister for Finance to ‘provide assistance’ to car owners who are ‘significantly out of pocket’. However, Mr McNulty said they were not confident that a fund, similar to that rolled out in Dublin to deal with pyrite damage, will be established. Petrol and kerosene burn at different rates during combustion, causing a buildup of residue and carbon inside the combustion area

and on the piston crown and valves. This residue makes its way down the cylinder walls causing the piston rings to stick, resulting in low engine compression. Symptoms of damage to engines due to fuel contamination include loss of engine power; the engine management warning light coming on; engine misfiring; a knocking noise after engine starts up from cold and excessive blow back through the oil dipstick and oil filler cap when the engine is running. Most engines that have been run on stretched petrol are so damaged they have to be replaced. Kerosene is used as a fuel for heating and is available for as little as 80 cent per litre. Petrol is often close to double that. Retailers can save €700 per 10,000 gallons of petrol.

Sligo film praised by US Archbishop film which was made in Sligo has received plaudits from an unlikely source. “Calvary”, filmed in locations which included Strandhill, Easkey and Sligo town (with other scenes shot in Rush, Co. Dublin), has received a glowing review in the Boston Globe by the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Charles Chaput. The Archbishop praised Calvary’s “understated power” and he described it as an “unblinking, unforgettable film. But the film has not been without its share of controversy. fierce criticism for effectively disowning the Irish film industry McDonagh’s comments that Irish films were “unintelligent” and not technically accomplished, along with his contention that Calvary is not an Irish film, has generated real anger within the industry in Ireland. At the weekend the mounting controversy was joined by one of Ireland’s most successful film producers. Rebecca O’Flanagan, described McDonagh’s comments as “disrespectful and arrogant in the extreme” and also “entirely unnecessary”. She said McDonagh had got a “huge proportion”

of Irish Film Board funding (€975,000) on the basis that the film was Irish and disowning it as such was a “moral breach of contract”. Ms O’Flanagan, whose producing credits include The Stag and Good Vibrations, also criticised the board for not being more robust in criticising McDonagh, though chief executive James Hickey said at the weekend that he disagreed with his views on Irish films McDonagh, in his own statement said that his comments had been “wilfully misrepresented by a small section of the Dublin media with an axe to grind”.

Sligo County Council supports local enterprise to deliver the anti-litter message

Questions and Answer Time with Farmer John in the outside classroom

F

armYard in Your SchoolYard launch interactive workshops at Taunagh NS in Riverstown FarmYard in Your SchoolYard have been successful in a bid to deliver fun and interactive anti-litter workshops to lots of pupils in their schools throughout County Sligo. Sligo County Council have given their support to Farmer John and Farmer Lucy to bring their farm animals to schools to help them spread the word that litter has a negative impact on animals. The county wide initiative was launched

at Taunagh NS in Riverstown on Thursday 19th September and pupils there were absolutely delighted to participate. “It was a beautiful sunny day and the pupils sat in their outside classroom” said Imelda Ryan-Jones, Green-Schools Officer “which they won in a competition run by Sligo County Council a number of years ago. The pupils listened to Farmer John’s sound advice and stories he had created to ensure everyone makes more efforts to keep our streets, roads and fields litter free.”

Taunagh NS successfully achieved their first Green Flag, for the theme of Litter & Waste, earlier this year. The children had created their own Green Code “Litter is so bitter, don’t scream and shout. Put it in the bin, that’s what it’s all about”. “Farmer John was impressed with what the children already knew” said Imelda “and fully engaged them to learn further when he shared a newly created book, handmade by Farmer Lucy, entitled The Kit Kat Man. “ Following stories and lots of examples of litter that can hurt animals the children had the opportunity to get up close and cuddly time with a range of hand reared farm animals. For some children this was the first time they had held baby chicks, rabbits, guinea pigs and hens. Lots of other schools in the county will be receiving free visits from FarmYard in Your SchoolYard and these include Coolbock NS, Ardkeeran NS, Sooey NS, Kilross NS, Knockminna NS, Kilmactranny NS, Scoil Mhuire gan Smal in Ballymote, Dromore West C.N.S, St Aidan’s NS in Monasteraden, Scoil Noamh Molaise in Grange, Rathcormac NS, Scoil Ursula, Mercy Primary, St John’s NS in Sligo Town, Holy Family NS in Tubbercurry, Ransboro NS, St Cecilias Special School, Ballintogher NS and the newly amalgamated Boys and Girls NS in Collooney. Well done to FarmYard in Your SchoolYard, a budding Sligo enterprise, and Sligo County Council for supporting this great initiative.

t has taken 42 years, but at last the resting place for Castlerea’s most famous elephant, Cindy has been given due recognition. As the story goes Cindy became famous when the late Patsy Glynn Snr took a picture of her coming out of Stephen Mannion’s Bar on the Main Street in the town in June 1958. While parading through the town, before the circus performance, Cindy wandered into Stephen Mannion’s pub on Main Street. Patsy Glynn Snr captured the moment and the photograph appeared in many newspapers and in the Vintner’s magazine with the caption ‘customers come in all shapes and sizes’. When Cindy died in Athenry in 1972, there was much discussion as to where she would be buried. Castlerea Towns Trust offered a site in the Demesne and Cindy was buried there. It wasn’t until 2014 that Seán Browne got the brainwave to mark the grave site and with the help of local businessmen Benny O’Connell and John Keenan and the expertise of stone mason Declan Hawthorne, his dream became a reality. Chris Kane from Williamstown wrote the epitaph. The grave has become quite popular with locals and visitors alike. If you’d like to visit Cindy’s grave, enter the Demesne through the gate on the Ballindrimley Road and walk along the path until you are opposite the entrance to Cahill’s SuperValu / Mart.

armers in the north-west, in tandem with those throughout the country, have been demonstrating in recent weeks to highlight the unfair treatment by the meat processing industry. They gathered in numbers at Dunnes Stores, Ballina, to vent their frustration. Tommy Robinson, a local member of IFA, outlined the situation clearly to North West Express: At present farmers are getting €3.60 per kg for beef supplied to factories

while this beef is sold in supermarkets at between €15.00 and €30.00 per kg. This represents a loss on production costs of €200 to €300 per animal for the farmer. Teagasc have established that farmers would need at least €4.00 per kg. to just break even. The situation is further compounded by the meat industry imposing unrealistic and unnecessary specifications, i.e. if an animal is one day over thirty months old a deduction of 30c per kg. is imposed.

Also, if the animal is over a certain weight or under or over-fat, penalties apply. The only ones benefiting from the unfair treatment of farmers is factories and retailers. Bord Bia have established that not only are the low prices not being passed on to the housewife, but meat prices have risen in the past year. The IFA are calling on the Minister for Agriculture to step in and take control of the situation before it’s too late.

Claremorris Meeting On Women In Pope Francis’ Church?

A

meeting in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, early in October should be of major interest to people concerned about the future role of women in the Catholic Church. Why did a group of women from the Killaloe Diocese in Clare challenge their Bishop over his plan to introduce a male only permanent Diaconate? It begs the fundamental question, “Can women’s voices be heard in the church of Pope Francis?” Kathleen McDonnell from Clare is heartened by the huge response after they challenged their Bishop, who has since cancelled plans for an all-male Diaconate. Support for the women has been widespread and diverse. The Clare women are committed Church members, not people on the fringe, but very active members. They have experience as retreat facilitators and being members of parish and

diocesan pastoral councils. What concerns them most is the church’s seeming inability to connect meaningfully with people who are drifting away. Kathleen McDonnell will address the issue, ‘Why Women felt compelled to speak out in Killaloe Diocese’ and will be followed by well-known Jesuit priest, Gerry O’Hanlon, on the topic, ‘Is Pope Francis willing to nurture an inclusive Church? The meeting is in The McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris on Sat October 11th from 2.00-4.30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

limming World Consultant Sarah Mulligan has proved she's red hot after winning a Ruby Award for her work in helping to tackle obesity in the area. The accolade sees Sarah, who runs the Sligo Slimming World group at Gillooly Hall, who lost 4 st 7 lb. herself, become a Ruby Consultant. The award was created in 2009 to celebrate Slimming World’s 40th anniversary and is given to Consultants who welcome 40 new members to their group in one month.

Sarah says: “More than two-thirds of the adult population are overweight and that includes Sligo, In fact, in the Republic of Ireland 61% of adults under the age of 65 are so severely overweight that they’re putting their health at risk and sadly 1 in every 4 children are struggling with their weight too. Members in our Gillooly Hall group have lost 122 stone 5 lb. since 9th of July this year when I took this group over. and I know these 40 new members will be equally successful too.” Slimming World members follow the club’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmer’s to make small, easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat so they make healthier choices and lose weight without ever going hungry or feeling deprived. Each week, as well as weighing in to log their progress, members are motivated for the week ahead by sharing recipes, advice and ideas for coping with challenges. Sarah says: “I know the

thought of joining a group can be daunting, especially when you don’t feel very confident, but everyone’s welcome and we have a lot of fun.” She adds: “I’m delighted to have achieved this award. Rubies are known for being beautiful but they’re also one of the hardest natural gems, and that’s what I’m most proud of because I’m taking this award as recognition of how hard I work to support every single one of my members to achieve their weight loss goals. I truly believe I have the best, most rewarding job in the world – there’s no better feeling than helping someone to feel good about themselves – so winning this award really is the (ruby red) cherry on top!” If you’d like to sparkle and shine like Ruby Consultant Sarah and her Slimming World members visit the Sligo group, which meets every Wednesday at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5 pm & 7 pm at Gillooly Hall, temple street, Sligo . Could Facial Recognition Help ID Jihadi John?

F

acial recognition software could be used to help identify the Islamic State militant thought to have killed a Briton and two Americans in propaganda videos. Footage has been released over the last month apparently showing the murders of US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and British aid worker David Haines. The IS militant - who speaks with a southern English accent and has been dubbed Jihadi John - shows only his eyes in all three videos, none of which have very high resolution. Hugh Carr-Archer, chief executive of Aurora Biometrics, a facial recognition firm based near Northampton, told Sky News: "To be frank, the video itself is not going to be very useful. "Because once you start blowing it up, looking at fingers, looking at eyes, you lose definition.” However, partial face recognition is an established technology. The software is not dissimilar from fullface recognition and treats the suspect's face as a 2D image. It then identifies the features, picking out points on the eyes, nose, eyebrows and chin, among others. t analyses their relative position to create a point map, then matches that map against a database. It can match a million faces per second. With partial face recognition, the visible

part of the face is extracted - in this case, the rectangle of the balaclava. That small section is mapped to a generic face, which can also be matched. The approximation is more hypothetical, and rougher, but can still be useful. Canadian firm Face Forensics specialises in partial face recognition, and its software powers the UK's ChildBase system used to identify paedophile suspects. Chief executive Iain Drummond told Sky News that for the system to work by itself,

the video would ideally need double the resolution. But it could still be used as the basis for more advanced analysis. "At that level you’re just not getting enough information to differentiate one face from another," he said. "There are tools of course that can enhance images so if you can enhance that image itself, then obviously the face recognition system will have a much betPeter Walpole and Lorraine Guinness ter chance of coming up withMc a likely match."

Home is where the hearth is Est 1978

W

e live in a world of ever growing energy-awareness. Increasing home heating costs driven by fluctuating fuel prices mean we must try to use energy as efficiently and sustainably as possible, without compromising the comfort of our homes, workplaces and public

buildings. The aim of this leaflet is to give householders an informative guide to the various home heating systems available, and their relative merits. Perhaps you want to improve the efficiency of your existing heating system? Or maybe you wish to learn

about the most up to date home heating technologies? If so, this booklet will give you clear, concise guidance on how to create warmth and comfort in your home, in ways that will help the environment and your pocket. Wrap up well

Before examining your heating system, it is important to review how well your house is insulated. For example, fitting draught excluders around windows and doors, where no draught protection is in place, can cut heat loss by as much as 20% in winter. Investing in high-grade insulation does more than cut down on heat loss. It also means that once your home is heated to the required temperature, it is easier for your heating system to maintain this temperature, so it uses less energy. Insulating your home can give long term benefits through reduced running costs. Capital investment in your heating system will also be reduced, as a smaller, more efficient heating unit will be required. For further information on how to effectively seal your home consult SEAI’s Guide to Insulating Your Home. Fuel – choose the sustainable option There are a number of factors to consider when selecting the type of

fuel for your home. For example, availability, storage and cost all have to be taken into account. But just as important are the environmental impacts your choice of fuel will have. Most of the energy we use in Ireland comes from fossil fuels - oil, coal, peat and gas. These are not renewable – once they are gone, they cannot be replenished. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This is a major contributor to climate change. The sustainable alternative to fossil fuels is renewable energy and this will never be exhausted. Renewable energy is available to us in many forms. Heat – meet your annual heat demand The total amount of heat required for a dwelling is called its Annual Heat Demand. This is a factor of: The Annual Heat Demand for a house will determine the required power output of the heat generator to be installed. It can be met from two main types of heating systems.

Thousands Of Women Duped In Pyramid Scam O rganisers of the Give And Take pyramid scheme told their backers "they couldn't lose" - but 88% never received a penny. Nine women have been convicted for their role in a pyramid scheme which saw thousands of women lose at least £3,000 each. The gang encouraged vulnerable women to "beg, borrow or steal" the cash needed to join the scam - and promised participants a payout of £24,000 within a matter of weeks. But of the 10,000 people involved in the "Give And Take" ploy, 88% lost their entire investment - with some victims ploughing as much as £15,000 into the scheme. Meanwhile, committee members behind the fraud pocketed up to £92,000 each, and were able to continue the scheme because their members were sworn to secrecy, and banned from writing about it. At lavish parties held at a hotel run by one of the organisers, hopeful guests were told "you can't lose" in inspirational talks by the chairwoman of the scheme, Laura Fox. Miles Bennett, prosecuting at Bristol Crown Court, said: "This wasn't a bunch of ladies sitting around playing bridge. This was a committee and Fox ruled these nights with a rod of iron. "This was a pyramid

promotional scheme where people were invited to give £3,000, with the promise they would receive £24,000. Wouldn't it be wonderful if life was that simple? "It is clear that, blinded by the possibility of riches and quick bucks, people were quite prepared to ignore the obvious pitfalls of a pyramid scheme." The Give And Take scheme, also known as Key To A Fortune, began in April 2008, and ran for 11 months. It was only when a suspicious member of the public contacted Trading Standards that

the scale of the scam come to light. A total of eleven women, aged between 34 and 69, were prosecuted for their alleged involvement in the pyramid scheme. Chairman Laura Fox, Carol Chalmers and Jennifer Smith-Hayes were found guilty of operating the pyramid scheme in 2012, and were each sentenced to nine months in prison. Sally Phillips, Jane Smith and Rita Lomas were handed suspended prison sentences after they admitted promoting the scam. Three others - Mary Nash,

Susan Crane and Hazel Cameron are due to be sentenced for operating and promoting Give And Take in October. Rhalina Yuli was acquitted during the trials, while two juries couldn't reach a verdict on the charges Tracey Laurence faced. The Office of Fair Trading estimates that 480,000 adults fall victim to pyramid schemes every year, losing more than £900 each on average. But according to their research, only 1% of those affected report their losses to the authorities.

'Thinspiration' Fears Over Eating Disorder Rise

I

t was recently reported on Sky News that the number of hospital admissions for eating disorders in England have increased by nearly 25% over the past three years. The provisional figures released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre indicate a rise among both women and men. In the year 2011-2012 there were 2,285 hospital admissions, rising to 2,855 in 2013-2014. Among men, the figure has risen from 214 to 249, and among women from 2,071 to 2,606, an even larger increase. Eating disorder charities have also told Sky News that in recent years more people appear to be engaging with the social media phenomenon known as "thinspiration". Young people from Sky News' Stand Up Be Counted campaign flagged it up as an issue, where people post photographs of emaciated bodies to "inspire" weight loss. While charities say "thinspiration" on social media

is not the cause of an eating disorder, it could be making it worse. Susan Ringwood, chief executive of the eating disorder charity Beat, says people accessing it will often not recognise they have an illness. "They strive to be perfect in every way - including the most perfect anorexic - and that can mean trying to become even thinner than the pictures on these sites. "Yet those pictures are very unlikely to be 'real'. "They are digitally manipulated to make the bodies shown appear extremely emaciated. Altered pictures of famous people are often included too." Sophie Clayton, 22, has suffered with anorexia since she was 12 years old. She used to scour social media for "thinspiration" for up to six hours a day when she was at her worst. She said it was an online "community" where she could feel supported "in a really

horrible way". "I want to increase the awareness that this isn't right. It's about showing people that, yes this is out there, but actually you don't need to aspire to this. This is mental illness, this is emaciated bodies, this is death really," she said. While some social networks have already taken action, Sophie wants more to take responsibility for content. "Possibly putting a message up if you type in a tag (like thinspiration) saying 'we're worried about you, look at this

for eating disorders', information about eating disorders would be really good. "I know that's increasing now, but when I was very underweight there was no information." The charity Beat says banning sites could cause the issue to be driven underground. Ms Ringwood said the answer lay in "providing a sense of acceptance and support throughout society, so that a pro-ana site is no longer the only refuge a person feels they can seek".

Sophie Clayton used to scour social media for 'thinspiration' for hours

Body Odour Tests For Taxi Drivers Cause Stink

A recently noticed rule under which taxi inspectors in a California city can penalise cabbies who are judged to smell bad is causing a stink. Drivers are up in deodorised arms over the criterion, which is one of dozens used by San Diego Regional Airport Authority officials to grade taxi drivers. Anyone who fails the smell test can be ordered to change before picking up another customer. The United Taxi Workers of San Diego says such tests reek of prejudice, fuelling a stereotype that foreign-born taxi drivers smell bad. Sarah Saez, an organiser with the union, told KPBS: "It's demeaning and it is borderline racist, I believe." Inspectors have been sniffing drivers for years, but controversy arose recently when a union employee spotted the checklist in an airport board agenda. One driver, Negus Gebrenarian, 39, from Ethiopia, told AP news agency that bad smells can just as easily come from customers. Inspectors with the airport authority also monitor a vehicle's "foul interior odours", including petrol, vomit or mildew. The officials check, too, such criteria as proof of insurance and faulty windscreen wipers or brakes. The airport authority says it is merely enforcing the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System's policy, which promotes frequent bathing by drivers. Airport authority spokeswoman Rebecca Bloomfield said: "Taxi drivers are often the first impression that travellers receive when arriving into San Diego and we want to encourage a positive experience." Only about three drivers fail to get a passing grade each year, she added. A survey of San Diego taxi drivers last year found 94% were immigrants and 65% were from East Africa.

Well that’s a bit awkward! ‘Burglar’ outed as wife’s bit on the side

In the dead of the night, a man is awoken from his slumber after hearing noises, and panics as he sees a shadow moving in his bedroom. Careful not to worry his wife, he phones the police to report a burglar – and they rush to the scene. The caller waits nervously, but when officers arrive they uncover an uncomfortable truth: the supposed thief was actually his wife’s secret lover. It’s not a plot from a film, it’s real life. So it’s not surprising then, that when the blunder was realised in Pisa, Italy, both men ended up in a bit of a scrap. The boyfriend had let himself into the house because he mistakenly thought the husband was away on business. Now that’s an unusual way to find out about an affair.

Choosing the Right Kitchen Cabinet for Your home

T

here are considerations, such as price and finding help, to take into consideration when selecting your kitchen cabinets. Below are information that should help you:

door, or double-door units which provide full access to the space. You might also want to add carousel or other slide-out accessories so items that were previously hard-to-reach are now easily at hand.

Units for Corner Spaces More options exist for corners than for any other kitchen cabinet space. Units designed specifically for corners make the best use of available space. The simplest corner pieces butt one cabinet up against another, which cuts off easy access to the corner. A better choice would be diagonal units with a larger

Quality Check Determine the quality of your cabinetry by examining the drawers - they are subject to the most wear and tear of any part of the unit. Compare the drawers of several different makes, and you'll likely see that joinery and quality differences are apparent. If drawer guides and cabinet hinges are not

adjustable - you should be able to fine-tune them with the cabinets in place - then you will likely run into problems later. With some frameless units, adjustable mounting hardware lets you re-level the cabinets even after you've installed them. Check that drawer glides allow full extension of drawers, and that doors and drawers are properly aligned. Service Help Simply deciding on the look and layout of your kitchen cabinets is not enough. Part of the cost of some of these items

includes service and installation help. A kitchen designer can help you figure out how to make best use of your space. Some retailers will ask you to fill out a survey so that they can zero in on the improvements you need for your kitchen - you might need a specialty area for cooking, or an extra-large dining area for entertaining guests. As well, you may need extra space in the form of pantries for storing bulk food purchases. All these needs should be taken into consideration to help weigh your options. Go to a showroom which displays many lines of

cabinets - you'll get a more complete picture of what is out there, and what you want. Find a designer whose tastes coincide with your own, then together you can choose a look and search for the items that fit nicely into your concept of an ideal kitchen. The designer can also help you find reasonably priced units with high-quality craftsmanship. If you're serious about buying, make arrangements to meet a designer or a cabinetmaker in a showroom. Some places will also carry the other kitchen components you may need, such as counters, sinks, appliances, and fixtures. Some designers may have contracts to promote a particular cabinet product line, so don't rely on one opinion alone. See a few different people, and ask if they are truly independent contractors. Bring a copy of your base plan map as well as the floor plan you devised for cabinet

placement. If budget is a big concern, try shopping in places where design services aren't necessarily tacked onto the price of the cabinets. But remember that with a less expensive price tag comes more personal responsibility you'll have to be extra keen about the accuracy of each step, and not rely as heavily on an expert's advice. Pricing Units The wide range of prices and styles can make buying cabinets a little tricky. But as long as you have your floor plan sketched out, personal style chosen, and budget considerations in mind, you should have no trouble getting a base price for appropriate standard cabinets. These prices are determined by the style of the doors and drawers, as well as the materials used in the construction of the basic carcass. But remember that each option and add-on will alter the original quoted price.

The Beginners’s Guide to home renovation of things can go wrong - latent conditions get discovered and they usually cost money.. During a major renovation, be prepared for a raft of specialists battering on your front door. These include engineers and building surveyors, and the ever-increasing list of consultants required by local councils, such as sustainability experts. Visit your local council for a full list. Consider the cost of rental fees if you move out during the renovation. Moving out could save you money - and sanity. When the owners move out, the house can be fully gutted and will run on minimal electricity and no hot water. Renting also saves time and money because tradesmen don't have to pack up each day.

F

orewarned is forearmed, especially when it comes to renovating. Prepare yourself with lessons learned, expert advice and our best money-saving tips - before you pick up the sledgehammer! 1. Getting started Avoid: Starting the renovation before getting a feel for the house Solutions: Live in a house through as many seasons as possible before you start any major changes unless the building is about to collapse! Rather than attempting to design your own blueprint, the priorities in the early stages should be a schedule of your needs and wishes, a master plan of how to achieve them and a budget,. A bigpicture vision can prevent extra costs on electrical and structural work. Design and decorative elements are equally important. Slowly gather inspiration for your mood board - a batch of pages from magazines, fabric swatches, design postcards and furniture brochures - to convey your visual passions. 2. Assembling a team Avoid: Hiring a team without comparing prices and personalities Solutions: Cheapest isn't always best when putting together the team - a person's workmanship, commitment, management experience, communication skills and availability should be the major priorities. You'll save in the long-term with someone who can take educated shortcuts, work faster and who will make less errors. A building designer or draftsperson can keep costs down for a simple house

extension, but for a new build or an extensive reno, an architect is the ticket. They can advise you on everything from design, planning and managing the budget to designing the interior, landscaping and even checking the builder's invoices. An architect's fees are around 10-15 per cent of the project value. To find a local architect, visit the Institute of Architects' website at www.architecture.ie. They're also experienced in dealing with local councils. Many architects will recommend their regular builders; talk to at least three to compare packages and check references. Rather than just relying on the builder's references, talk to the owners themselves. Prospective trades people need to show home warranty insurance and public

liability insurance. Be sure that your trades people are covered for workers' compensation by their employer. 3. Controlling the budget Avoid: Being unprepared for an unexpected budget blow-out Solutions:While an architect can estimate upcoming costs, a quantity surveyor will supply a more detailed price expectation. The break down the building into elements, such as floors and walls, and amend the cost depending on the materials. Keep a log of all products and materials used and changes made each decision to upgrade adds up and could blow your budget. To help minimise risks, a contingency plan of 10-15 per cent extra budget is imperative. All sorts

4. Getting the timing right Avoid: Thinking that the renovation will run on time and to schedule Solutions: Timing is crucial. "If you haven't ordered a kitchen before November, it probably won't be installed until February. You can be guaranteed that the factory will shut down over Christmas, making the kitchen at least a month late. Builders and architects take time off for holidays throughout the year. Ask them to confirm their vacation plans early on. Another slow down can be the winter season. Builders are entitled to extensions for winter weather during the early stages of the construction. Aim to complete construction before January: The team can keep working on the interiors throughout the bad weather 5. Starting the demolition Avoid: Failing to show the construction plans to your neighbours before lodging the development application Solutions: Consider showing site plans, elevations and shadow diagrams to directly affected neighbours before applying to the council. Loss of privacy and overshadowing are common complaints, so consider the impact your design may have early to speed up the planning

approval process. After this hurdle, you, your architect or building designer can lodge the development application with the council before building commences. Patience is a virtue, since councils are notoriously slow, and if complaints are lodged, you may have to attend council meetings. Most councils require a construction certificate for building work to start. Once done, the blissful sounds of jackhammers can begin. 6. Keeping costs down Avoid: Project managing a full renovation yourself - it can cost more Solutions: An architect can be commissioned for different stages, starting with the plans (preliminary sketches, briefing a structural engineer and a quantity surveyor), the design development stage (preparation of the final design and documentation required for council submissions) and contract administration (tendering, signing of building contracts, site inspections and monitoring the builder's progress). For a reasonably simple renovation, it may be possible to project manage the final stage yourself. As a back-up, hire an architect on an hourly rate; they understand the specifications, can solve difficult issues with the builder and spot flaws a layperson would never notice. Source fittings, lighting and decorative elements yourself. Time and research is key to achieving a high-end look for a fraction of the cost. You can often save money by negotiating all the furniture from one place, or offering to pay cash in exchange for a discount. 7. Adopting an eco attitude Avoid: Assuming eco-sensitive options are more expensive Solutions: Incorporating green solutions into a design in the early stages may have an initial added cost, but they will more than pay for themselves in the long run. By installing solar panels, you can

21 dining, or a spot to have a coffee. By designating those spaces and putting something there that people can use, the whole space becomes more inviting." 9 The wow factor Avoid: Splurging on eye-catching pieces that don't work well together Solutions: A well-executed job is where many elements just ‘settle' not every piece needs to have the ‘wow factor'. "A piece may not be noticed on its own but it can be intrinsic to the overall design. Every decision has an impact when renovating. "If you go with a particular type of tap, the hand rails and showerhead have to work with that. That's where many renovators come unstuck - they like this and they like that but when they see it all together, they realise it doesn't work. An interior designer takes a practical and cost-effective approach. They have access to all the latest materials, finishes and furniture de-

generate your own electricity, saving money in the long term as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Design your renovation to work with the seasons to regulate temperature, humidity and air flow. Site orientation is critical to take advantage of solar power and crossventilation. Insulate and use materials with good thermal mass (those which absorb and release heat slowly, cutting down the need for heating and airconditioning). Work with non-toxic products and avoid over-consumption. Use renewable resources where possible for energy, along with energy-efficient appliances. Collect and store rain water for daily use.

signs, They are able to think outside of the box. Finalise hard surface finishes, wall and floor colours, and fittings and fixtures in the planning stages, but consider soft furnishings, furniture and decorative elements towards the end, keeping the big picture in mind. Consider it the fun part after all the hard work! 10 the final stages Avoid: Reaching completion date with trades people still hard at work Solutions: The completion date needs to be finalised when setting up the building contract. It is important to clients that the have a fixed completion date as well as a fixed price. The client is entitled to damages if the builder runs over. There is then a greater incentive for a builder to finish on time." Home warranty insurance is mandatory in some way, but only applies to building projects where

the value of the work is above a specified amount. This type of insurance protects the home owner from defective or faulty work where the builder becomes insolvent, dies or disappears. Once work has been completed, an architect or design professional needs to check for defects. If there are faults - if walls are cracking, for example, because of bad workmanship - the builder should rectify any damage. If the builder refuses, you'll need to lodge a complaint. Good builders rely on their reputation, and will be prepared to come back to make any repairs.

8 Stepping Outside Avoid: Failing to budget for landscaping Solutions: Consider the outdoor area from the start and budget accordingly. The first flush of enthusiasm about prospective renovations is all about the interior. Garden landscaping is often forgotten until the renovation is nearly complete, when there are no funds left. Consider the backyard during those first conversations with an architect - it might even be worth hiring a landscape designer. Designate areas in your garden for children and for relaxing or entertaining. Build spaces within the garden that flow to areas that have a destination , it might be a reading area, a place for outdoor

Decorating mistakes to avoid

A

ll home interior magazines give ideas and advise for the different styles of home decoration, but there are some things which you should always have in mind when designing and decorating your first apartment. If you keep in mind the possible errors, then it is easier to avoid them afterwards. We offer you some tips that will make you aware of the most common decorating mistakes. One of the most common decorating mistakes – choosing the colour of the walls first. The market offers incredibly big variety of colours. Picking up the wall colour first will significantly narrow your options for furniture and accessories. It will be much more difficult to find a sofa that matches the colour of your walls than finding the right furniture for you and then pick a

matching colour. Interior decorating mistakes often happen when neglecting this simple rule. Do not underestimate the natural focal point in a roomIf an item or a piece of furniture is a natural focal point, for

example a fire place or a large window, take advantage of that and design the whole interior around that point and emphasize this accent with a beautiful decoration. Do not put all furniture to the walls Do not place any furniture, especially if you have tight enough free space on the walls, or the living room to the kitchen is open. You’d better group the furniture and bring it to the center of the room. This would create a warm and cozy atmosphere for conversations. A console table behind the sofa is a beautiful way to divide the areas. Do not put obstacles on the paths Organize your space so that you can move around the room freely and without obstacles. Thus the room will look clean and well-organized. We believe that a chair in front of the door or a table in an area with a lot of movement is not a good idea. Leave enough room for easy access and movement in the room. Do not clutter your shelves Various old things are lovely memories and a personal element in the interior but you should not overdo it. You better avoid the accumulation of many small items in one place. Not every surface should be covered.

Try organising your collections in smaller groups. Do not use colours and items that “fight” with each other Contrast is a beautiful thing and the eclectic style is actually a great way to decorate a room, but some colours and objects of different styles just do not fit well together.

Alderford Interiors Fifty shades of grey

G

REY is having something of a moment. Thanks to a certain book and the soon to launch film, the days of grey being considered dull and boring are long gone. The colour has sex appeal and this is certainly true when it comes to the world of interior design. Monochrome has been a hot trend for some time but add grey into the mix alongside rustic wood finishes and chrome detailing, and you have something new and altogether warmer. This twist on modern minimalism is packed with attitude. Think slouchy sofas, statement storage and animal-inspired accessories,

for a look that’s the ultimate in contemporary cool, but with comfort at its heart. To start, get back to basics with your colour scheme such as plain white walls and bare floorboards; these provide the perfect backdrop for a grey colour palette. We don’t want frills or fussiness, so strip back the clutter for a calming space that lets the shapes and contours of the furniture and accessories shine through.

The simple shape of the Hamilton corner sofa with its thin contemporary arms and deep, comfy seat cushions is a great starting point. Its pale grey colour provides a good base for adding varying shades of grey cushions, throws and accessories. Give depth to a monochrome palette by mixing up textures and materials in muted shades. When it comes to wood, a rustic finish that highlights the grains and grooves is key. The Greenwich table and chairs shown in French grey and rustic oak mix are perfect for this reason. This dining range also comes with all the occasional pieces like coffee tables nests tv units....etc. So don’t be afraid to embrace grey into your life – it’s more exciting than you think!

Choosing the right Flooring for your home Carpet Carpets were probably first made by nomadic peoples to cover the earthen floor in their tents. It is not certain however, if the Egyptians, the Chinese, or even the Mayas first invented carpet making. It is quite possible that many peoples, none of whom were in contact with each other, began to make carpets at about the same time. We can be certain however, that by the fifth century BC carpet making had reached a high artistic level. This was proven by the Russian archaeologists Rudenko and Griaznov, who in 1949 discovered the oldest known “knotted” carpet in the Pazyryk valley, about 5000 feet up on the Altai Mountains in Siberia. Today, Carpet weaving is by far the most widespread handicraft in Iran; it is also the best-known one abroad. Persian carpets are

renowned for their richness of colour, variety of patterns and quality of design. Wooden Flooring Wooden flooring made its appearance in the Middle Ages, with some of those 800-year old floors still in use today. The upper levels were the most common placement, with the most expensive wooden floors being stained colors, laid in patterns, parquets and even marquetry. Less costly floors were decorated with painted patterns and designs starting in the early 1600’s, with the genesis probably being painted oilcloths which are still popular today. Colonial times brought smooth pine wooden flooring boards, and the 18th century saw painting to simulate stone and simple checked patterns combined with floor cloths in elaborate wood floor designs and

marbelized diamond patterns being very common. These were used primarily in hallways, dining rooms and parlors. Finer cuts of wood flooring and inlayed designs were limited to the formal and nicer rooms. The 19th century was characterized by unfinished pine wooden flooring that evolved to being stained and finished by mid-century. Pine soon became subflooring as parquet got popular, with prefabricated parquet patterns being sold to install on cloth yielding “wood carpet.” Herringbone oak parquet patterns abounded with the emergence of custom borders featured in dining rooms, libraries, and drawing rooms. The 20th century visited lighter wooden flooring in the 20’s and 30’s, with strip oak the standard in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Peaking in 1956, wood flooring was overwhelmed by carpet following the FHA’s acceptance for new home construction. Throughout the 60’s and 70’s hardwood flooring was a specialty surface utilized very selectively until the appearance, durability, health and maintenance benefits returned it to favor again in the 80’s and 90’s. Vinyl Flooring Vinyl Flooring first came into being as a light-weight and durable

building material during World War II. As more and more use of this product began being discovered, vinyl entered into the commercial market with a vengeance. Today, one very important usage of this chemical is in the flooring industry in the form of vinyl floor tiles. Depending on the composition of the material, vinyl tiles tend to have variance in characteristics, leading to choices in terms of whether a given tile is more or less suitable to be installed in a bathroom, doorway, or basement. In the VCT, for example, manufacturers add a printed design layer created through a rotogravure printing process. This design layer is what gives the vinyl floor tiles those beautiful designs and colors and sparkle, making them attractive. It is in VCT again that manufacturers sheath a high-performance “wear” layer on top, in order to withstand

heavy duty traffic. It is not for nothing that these tiles are called “Resilience tiles”. They tend to bounce back from whatever impact and pressure they are subjected to, whether through footfalls or static load. A few other notable characteristics of this product are as follows: Diversity of designs Thanks to technology, vinyl flooring tiles can imitate the look and feel of wood or ceramic floors, but at considerably less cost than these more expensive counterparts. It is very easy to cut the tiles and give them any shape; so the floor can be turned into a mosaic of designs and art. Company logos can be planted on the floor through vinyl floor tiles. Direction signs can be impregnated on the floor using this product… the list is as endless as your imagination.

Attic Storage Compression can cause an insulating material to lose some of its insulating properties. It is therefore important, where possible, to minimise the amount of items stored in the attic which may compact or compress the insulating material. Where storage is required, laying a second roll of insulation (above the joists) is impractical and in this situation, try to make certain that the storage area set aside is located over an area of the house which has a lower heating requirement, e.g. over bathrooms as opposed to the living/sitting room. Alternative arrangements like raised storage areas above the level of the insulation could also be discussed with your Contractor.

method in this case known as Cavity Wall Pumped Insulation. A series of small holes are drilled in the structure and a bonded bead is pumped into the wall. The advantages of this method is that there is minimal disruption to the interior/exterior of the building.

D

id you know that there are different ways to insulate the exterior walls of your home? The first step is to see how the building was built: Are the walls made with cavity blocks, or is there two walls built side by side with a cavity between them. The latter is referred to as cavity wall. Cavity Block Structure If your home has cavity block structure then there are two main options for insulating your walls. The first is Internal Warmboard Insulation. Certified Tradesmen fix an insulating board to the inside of the external walls of the building. An example of this would be a house built in the 50′s, with no external wall insulation. To meet current ‘Part L’ Building Regulations, you would need to add 92.5mm of Internal Wall Insulation. If there was 50mm of insulation already on the wall, you would only need to add 42.5mm top-up. By choosing contractors registered with SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland), home owners can avail of the Better Energy Home Scheme, which provides substantial grants towards the cost of works. One major advantage of warmboard insulation is that you are no longer heating the walls of the property. There are various types of internal warmboard, such as Kingspan Kooltherm and EasyBoard. The second method of insulating Cavity Block Structures is External Wall Insulation, also known as an External Wrap. In this case, the contractor fixes dense insulation panels to the exterior of a building using a bonding agent and mechanical fixings. On top of this there is a reinforcing mortar layer with glass fibre mesh and a primer layer and a decorative render finish that is available in many different colours. Cavity Wall Structure If a building’s walls are constructed using an outer leaf solid block, a cavity (normally 100mm) and an inner leaf solid block, then it is known as a Cavity Wall Structure. There is an additional retrofit insulation

Roof Insulation An un-insulated or poorly insulated roof costs you money and harms the environment. There is now grant aid available through the SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme to help you improve your home using roof insulation. Up to 30% of the heat produced in your home may be escaping if your roof is uninsulated. Ceiling level roof insulation is generally the most cost effective of any energy efficiency upgrade made to a house and often does not come with a large price tag when the potential savings are considered. Even if you already have insulation in your roof, you may still be losing heat if it is damaged, less than is necessary or incorrectly installed. For example if you have a thin or worn layer of insulation it would be beneficial to replace it or improve its performance by adding another layer. Case Study Mary has a four bedroom detached house 150 m in size. She has an annual heating bill of €1,600. Mary previously had 100mm of fibreglass insulation in her attic but decided to upgrade the insulation in her attic to the recommended 300mm following advice from SEAI and the various contractors she rang. As well as resulting in more comfortable living conditions, this simple low cost measure now saves Mary over €250 every year on her home heating bill. Mary was also able to secure grant aid from the Better Energy Homes scheme to help her with the cost of this. Typical costs for this type of upgrade are approx. €700 - €1,000 (excluding grant). The Benefits of Roof Insulation • Reduction in heating bills • Increased comfort levels • Low capital cost • Short payback periods • Reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions Effectiveness of Insulation The effectiveness of an insulating material is measured using a 'U-value'. A U-value is a measure of how much heat is conducted through a material. Insulation installed correctly will have a low U-value as it will allow only small amounts of heat to pass through, thereby keeping your home warm. Homeowners availing of attic insulation

U Value - a measure of materials insulation ability grants under the Better Energy Homes scheme should aim to achieve a U-value of 0.13 W/m2K or better (i.e. lower). It is vital that you ask the installer that the price quoted for will achieve the required U-value, or the best U-value that can be achieved in your circumstances. Key Roof Insulation Facts and Tips If you have a pitched roof with an attic space, one of the simplest ceiling insulation methods is to lay a quilt (Mineral Fibre, Glass Fibre, Hemp, Sheepswool materials are all capable of satisfying the performance requirements of the scheme). If this type of material is to be used, it is important to ensure that the quilt is installed in two layers and in two directions in order to ensure the maximum benefit is achieved. There are many other products that can insulate effectively at ceiling level. Where your contractor suggests that one of these products is the best for you, have him explain in detail the benefits and standards associated with the product. If you are considering using a “multifoil” insulation in conjunction with another insulation material, it is important to check any installation requirements with the supplier.

Ventilation Pipe Insulation Insulation Integrity Installing insulation properly is very important. Where insulation is installed between joists, it is important that it is cut tight and is installed with no gaps. Gaps between the insulation will cause it to become less effective as heat loss will occur in these areas. Ventilation Adequate ventilation is important in an attic to help prevent damp or mould from occurring. It is therefore important to ensure ventilation openings at the eaves of the house are left unblocked after installation of your insulation Water Storage Tanks and Pipes When an attic is insulated at ceiling level, its temperature is reduced, as most of the heat previously lost from the house through the attic is now being kept within the house. Therefore, it is necessary to insulate the water tank and pipes to ensure that they will not freeze during cold weather. This will also help to minimise heating costs associated with heating water. Walkway Adequate ventilation is important in an attic to help prevent damp or mould from occurring. It is therefore important to ensure ventilation openings at the eaves of the house are left unblocked after installation of your insulation Your insulation contractor should install a permanent walkway in your attic to ensure you have easy access to cold water tanks or other fitted appliances.

Sleepless to Sleep heaven in ten easy steps T

here's no secret to a great night’s sleep. Just follow these simple steps and say goodbye to sleep problems.

Is your bed up to the job? Even the best bed in the world won’t last forever. Chances are if it's ten years old, or less if it's a cheap bed, it's probably past its best and isn't giving you the support you need. Old mattresses are often the biggest cause of sleep problems. Get your room right: Make your room your sleep sanctuary and not a storeroom or home office. A room dedicated to sleep will help to eliminate sleep problems. It's that simple. So create a calming, restful space and de-clutter your bedroom. De-stress before bed: Everyone needs time to wind down before bed, so make time for it. Take a bath, listen to soothing music or try a bit of yoga. We all have our own way of relaxing, so find yours. Good housekeeping: Unwelcome bedroom guests like dust mites cause allergens that can affect your breathing and are a common cause of sleep problems. Simple things like using a mattress protector and keeping your room well ventilated will make a big difference. Take more exercise: 20 to 30 minutes exercise a day goes a long way to reduce common sleep problems. So go for a walk, bike ride or swim, it helps relieve the stresses and strains of the day and is one of the best ways to make sure you get a refreshing night's sleep. Don't over indulge: Tea and coffee may be great in the morning to get you going, but the last thing you need when you want to go to sleep. So avoid sleep problems, cut out the stimulants and go for relaxing hot milky drinks or herbal teas instead. Can't sleep – don't count sheep, get up: Don't lie there thinking about why you can't get to sleep.

Get up, do something relaxing and go back to bed when you feel sleepy again. Firm support base bed advice: Solid or platform top divans, have a rigid, non spring top panel, often used with orthopaedic mattresses, these bases will typically give the whole bed a firmer feel. Sprung slatted base bed advice: The sprung slatted base is the most common way to support the mattress on many of today’s bedsteads. Two rows of curved wooden slats, usually beech, run across the width of the bed and their bowed shape provides a mattress with extra spring support. Drawer base bed advice: The base of your bed can do so much more that provide a little extra support. Thanks to the number of options now available with one, two, three or four handy drawers to full size ottomans, it can help you de-clutter your room too. Buying a mattress: Mattresses may look pretty much the same from the outside, but underneath there are huge differences. To help you buy a mattress that's right for you, here's the insiders guide to the ins and outs of our mattresses. When you buy a mattress the cover is the first thing you'll see. And whilst attractive designs are a plus, remember it will spend all of its life covered up. When you buy a mattress go for the best quality covering you can. Woven or knitted high quality viscose or cotton yarns will be comfortable, tough and tear resistant. Quilting or tufting: Most mattresses are finished by either quilting or tufting. Quilting is where the outer fabric is stitched to the surface fillings to create a comfortable sleeping surface surface. Tufting is where tapes are passed through the mattress at regular intervals and secured at each side by tags or washers, to prevent movement of the upholstery within the mattress. Open coil: Probably the most common type of mattress, springs are arranged in rows and connected to one another, top and bottom, by a spiral helical wire. The thickness, or gauge, of the steel will determine

how hard or soft the mattress feels. Pocket spring: Individual springs are contained within their own cloth pocket and positioned in rows. This design allows each spring to work independently, supporting the body exactly where it needs it and prevents the age old problem of rolltogether. Spring counts vary from 600

to up to 3 or even 4,000, and like other types of mattresses are made in a range of tensions. Higher quality mattresses are often hand side stitched to increase their life expectancy. Pocket sprung mattresses are generally more expensive, and are used mainly in higher quality products.

Memory foam: If you're looking to buy a mattress, go for the ultimate in sleep comfort. Our exclusive NASA developed Sensaform memory foam uses your body heat and weight to mould itself to your exact shape. This all-over, perfectly balanced support reduces stress on pressure points, improves circulation and can even help alleviate back pain.

Living room furniture

I

f the dining room furniture is the most often used furniture in the house, then the living room is often the room where the family spends most of it's time. It is a multi functional room as it is for relaxing and also less formal entertaining. Living room furniture needs to be hard wearing since it gets such use, yet this should not be allowed to stop the room from being stylishly decorated. What is considered living room furniture? Living room furniture is made up of a wide variety of different pieces of furniture including the following: • Settee and foot stool sets, Coffee tables, Book cases, Mirrors, Occasional tables, Sideboards, Display units, Lamps and other ornaments, TV stands and cabinets, Fireplaces, Statues and hearth decorations, Rugs and floor adornments. There are as many combinations of furniture as there are people. With the variety of furniture available, combined

with the room size and shape, it is possible to create a truly original living space. How to furnish your living room Furnishing a living room can be a tricky exercise, and is one that requires quite a deal of thought and planning. For many homes the living room is the showcase. The first consideration is the size and shape of the room and included in this consideration is also location of door(s), window(s), radiators and fireplace. When these have been taken into account you will have a good idea of what configuration of furniture will best fit into and complement your living room. You should also set a budget guideline at an early stage to help narrow down the possibilities a little. Stick to a style. With your basic living room furniture it is best to use a common theme throughout. You can introduce different ideas through the accessories you choose to go with the basic furniture.

renewable

energy

all you ne ed to know Solar Water Heating Heating water is the second largest energy use in typical households Solar water heaters can be a costeffective way to generate hot water for your home here in Ireland. One square metre of Solar Panels on your roof receives the equivalent of more than 100 litres of oil in free solar energy per year. And as a matter of fact, this is more than in Paris. Ok. But what if the sun is not shining? No problem. A solar water heater not only converts direct sunlight but also indirect sunlight into heat, so it works even when the sky is overcast. True, there will be less solar heat available during the winter, but a back-up heater will boost the water temperature. The result is 100% comfort at all times, with plenty of hot water for a fraction of the cost. Our panels have been fully tested and come with a 10 year Guarantee and are approved for the SEI Greeener

Homes Scheme, which means that you can qualify for a grant of ₏ 300 per m2(to max. 12 m2 ) How Solar water Heating Systems work Solar water heating systems include storage tanks and solar collectors. There are two types of solar water heating systems: active, which have circulating pumps and controls, and passive, which don't. Solar water heating systems include two main items. They are Storage Tanks and Solar collectors. outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank systems, the solar water heater preheats water before it enters the conventional water heater. In one-tank systems, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank. Solar Collectors There are two main forms of solar collectors or panels on the market here in Ireland Flat Plate collectors and Evacuated Tube collectors. The main component of ach is the absorber, which absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat. In a plate collector, the absorber is in the form of

a flat, black plate in a shallow metal container covered with one or more layers of transparent glass or plastic; either air or a liquid is circulated through the cavity of the container. Heat is directly transferred from the absorber to the circulating liquid (air, water) The absorber in an Evacuated tube collector consists of a relatively narrow strip of copper with a selective black coating bonded to a single copper tube. The tube contains a special fluid which evaporates when heated. This vapour rises and transfers heat to the water circulating in the systems primary circuit. Evacuated tubes are more efficient than flat plate collectors; consequently they take up less space. They are, however, more expensive that flat plate. Generally speaking, to produce a given amount of hot water, Whether using flat plate or evaporated tubes, the installation costs will be roughly the same. Rainwater Harvesting Rainwater Harvesting Systems In Ireland, daily water consumption rate per person is 148 litres. However, only 67 litres of this is used for personal hygiene and nutritional consumption. This means that approximately 80 litres of water per person on a daily basis do not need to be high quality but while using water from the utility for all your daily water requirements you are paying the same amount of

money for each litre of water. The water you are using for washing your car, watering the plants and toilet flushing is treated to the drinking water quality. It is possible to use rainwater harvesting systems for such needs. They are widely used in homes, farms, public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and hotels and many other facilities. How do they harvest water? Its early versions were simply gathering the rainwater in a tank. Today, our rain harvesting systems are much more improved and efficient with the addition of a couple of elements, such as pressure vessels, pumps and filters. A typical rainwater harvesting system has the following elements: • A surface to catch water, this is generally found on your roof • Channels for water transport from catch surface to the storage tank • Filters to filter particles • Pumps and pressure vessels to pressurise water and keep water pressurised. • Water storage tank to store ready-to-use water. • Piping system to transport water to the points of consumption. What will be your savings? This is dependent on many factors. The most important one is, which part Ireland you live in. This is important to know the annual rain figures for that area. Also the surface you will use for catching the water plays an

important role in the calculations. When some average values are taken, you can save about €1 for each square meter of your horizontal water catch surface annually. Rainwater harvesting systems pay for themselves in a short time, generally a few years. Installation and Maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems Rainwater harvesting system design and installation needs experience and training. Systems are designed to occupy minimum space especially in your garden. For this purpose, underground tanks are used. The pipe system is connected to the intended points of use. Pressurizing and pressure maintaining elements in the systems allow you to have constant water pressure in your rainwater pipe system. Rainwater harvesting system elements are made of durable materials and have a simple technical structure. These two features result in minimum maintenance requirements for the overall system. You may only need to clean filters from time to time and maybe some infrequent maintenance may be required for pumps.

Fitted Wardrobes with Sliding Doors M A RTIN M L O C CARPENTRY Keadue, Co. Roscommon

No Job too big, No job too small

F

inding enough space around the home these days is as difficult as finding more time to yourself or more money to treat yourself with. We all search for it, but it somehow always remains just beyond our grip. Luckily, there are a few simple and cost effective things we can do to create more space around the house. Here we take a look at one of the most long term investments you can make in a home that will

radically free up more space in the bedroom: fitted wardrobes with sliding doors. Here's a look at the pros and cons of this popular home design option and an analysis of whether it's the right choice for your home. What does it involve? Creating more space for storage is something we could all benefit from. Sliding wardrobe doors covering a wardrobe interior can create huge amounts of additional space in the bedroom. Also, they offer one the rare benefits of being able to do this without hindering the design of the room. This is because the doors do not open outwards into the room, meaning you do not have to make spatial allowances for this within your bedroom. Will it look ugly? When most people think of space maximizing options for their room, cluttered shelves and flimsy cabinets are usually the items that come to mind. Not only are these fairly limited in terms of creating real additional space, they often impair the overall style and feel that has been created in the room.

This is where fitted wardrobes with sliding doors really come into their own. Not only do they create substantial amounts of additional space for everything from clothing and footwear to spare bedding and linen, they can be fitted in a style that complements and enhances your current style and bedroom atmosphere. What styles are available? Always ensure you choose a

company that can provide a bespoke wardrobe interior and sliding wardrobe doors that enhances your current bedroom design - or your future plans if you're considering a bedroom makeover in years to come. For instance, if you prefer a modern and sleek interior design scheme, bold black glass sliding wardrobe doors are perfectly matched to enhance the masculine design scheme. Alternatively, if you like light, open spaces, a sliding door in classic cream and walnut colour schemes should complement your own design scheme perfectly. Fitted wardrobes are a fairly permanent alteration, meaning they are naturally more expensive than some of your other spacesaving measures. This means they are inappropriate if you're only renting a property, or planning to move to a new home shortly. However, they do help to add considerable value to the sale price of any building - after all, we can never have too much space and this is something which all prospective buyers will prioritise when viewing properties.

Exciting October events at Ballina Arts Centre appearance on the TV talent show The Voice of Ireland. Tickets: €20. Booking advised.

Heidi McCaffrey brings Dolly Parton story to life Country music fans are in for a real treat on Thursday 2nd October, at 8pm, when Heidi McCaffrey brings her acclaimed show Dolly Parton: The Songs, The Story to Ballina Arts Centre. Heidi McCaffrey sings the songs and tells the story of Dolly Parton, in this is fascinating story, which captures the achievements of this incredible woman, who created and performed some of the greatest and most instantly recognisable songs ever produced. Dolly Parton – singer, songwriter, film star – was born one of 12 children, in a family where money was always scarce. She began her professional career at the tender age of 10 and made her Grand Ole Opry debut three years later. By 1971 she had her first number one country hit with 'Joshua'. From there, success followed success, with Dolly gaining world wide recognition from hits such as ‘Jolene’, ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘Nine to Five’, as well as ‘Here We Go Again’ which topped the country and pop charts. This song also brought Dolly her first

Grammy award, and of course she won the Country Music Award for best female vocalist in 1975 and 1976. Then there’s the hugely successful films Nine to Five and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, in which she starred and wrote the hit theme tunes. London-based singer and actor, Heidi McCaffrey has worked all over the world. As an awardwinning singer she has appeared on numerous TV shows, especially since the release of her all original album Come On In, which received international airplay and led to an invitation to tour Australia and New Zealand next year. In her acting career Heidi has appeared in top TV shows including Eastenders, Holby City, Lewis and Law and Order. In singing the songs and telling the story of Dolly Parton, Heidi highlights Dolly’s life with sincerity and conviction, and performs a truly magnificent interpretation of all the classic songs of the living legend that is Dolly Parton. Heidi will be accompanied by Richie Hayes – well know to many from his

Romantic Spanish Promenade On Thursday 9 October, at 8pm, Ballina Arts Centre will present a special evening of Spanish guitar music, by one of Europe’s leading maestros of Flamenco guitar, Angel Lejarza Leo. Angel Studied in the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and later at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Musica in Madrid and finished his studies of Renaissance and Baroque music in Paris An exciting performer of various styles of Spanish guitar playing, Angel is a very powerful musician, eager to play the guitar to the very limit of the instrument’s capabilities. Angel’s repertoire offers a new and refreshing insight into Spanish music in all its different manifestations. From the traditional to ‘Flamenco puro’ to Classical, Angel does spectacular versions of all of them. Tickets: €15 / €12. The return of Johnny Duhan On Saturday 11th October, at 8pm, one of Ireland’s greatest songwriters makes a return to Ballina Arts Centre. Duhan started his career as a fifteen year old front man with Granny’s Intentions, the most popular beat group in Ireland in the 1960s. After rousing Dublin with their soul touch, they moved to London, where they enjoyed considerable success and disbanded before Johnny was twenty one. Johnny started writing folk songs, poetry and prose at this stage. In a career spanning 40 years, his greatest achievement is a quartet of epic albums – Just Another Town, To the Light, The Voyage and Flame – which correspond to the four chapters of his lyrical autobiography, ‘To the Light’. Johnny’s songs have been sung worldwide in a variety of languages, thanks to the focus put on them by Christy Moore, The Dubliners, Mary Black and hosts of other Irish and international singers, and his song ‘The Voyage’ has become a modern classic. Christy Moore has called him “one of our greatest songwriters” and the late Ronnie Drew described him as “one of my favourite songwriters.” Tickets: €18 / €16. Lambert Puppet Theatre bring Snow White and Bosco to the Arts Centre On Sunday 12th October, 2pm, the world famous Lambert Puppet Theatre returns to Ballina Arts Centre , with their new show Snow White. Now widely

recognised as the premier touring puppet theatre company in Ireland, and also internationally renowned for its many fine productions in theatres throughout Ireland, UK and Europe. From its earliest beginnings, the Lambert family has been involved with RTE television, working on the hugely popular series Wanderly Wagon, featuring the late Eugene Lambert and Judge. Paula Lambert was the voice of Bosco for seventeen years and indeed Bosco is still a firm favourite with the younger children and will make a nostalgic

appearance in the opening part of this show. This is a beautifully produced show with large puppets, colourful sets and exquisite lighting and is suitable for an age group up to ten years of age. Booking essential. Tickets: €10 Ballina Arts Centre is open from 10am – 5pm Monday to Friday, and 10am – 3pm on Saturdays. Laugh out loud: The healing benefits of laughter laughter therapy to help treat drug addicts at a residential drug rehab centre located near the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughing produces dopamine in the brain much in the same way as cocaine,” he explains, “so you essentially substitute laughing fits for drug addiction, addicting people to a positive behaviour rather than a negative one. They’re after rushes and really don’t care where they get them.”

A

little chuckle goes a long way when it comes to maintaining your health. Body and soul have a laugh and you’ll get happy! “Laughter is an instant vacation.” When Milton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’t too far off, according to some researchers who think laughter is like a wonder drug capable of treating a host of maladies related to stress and lifestyle. “Laughter therapy is making people laugh for healing purposes,” says Albert Nerenberg, a journalist, documentary filmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in 2009) and laugh-ologist, an expert who lectures on the science, practice and therapeutic effects of laughter. He brings the therapy to the workplace to help relieve stress and increase motivation, and to the health-care profession to promote and maintain health. But he cautions, “Occasionally, you hear wild claims that laughter therapy cures cancer or a terminal illness. The therapy holds great promise, but there is a danger of creating false expectations.” Researchers continue to study laughter’s effects and have made some discoveries on how it benefits our well-being. Brain chemicals From a neurological perspective, pioneering studies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University Medical Center in California have shown that laughing triggers a flood of pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters, like dopamine, in the brain. Low levels of both these brain chemicals are associated with the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent of Canadians. Nerenberg has been using

Immune response A depressed immune system is vulnerable to colds and viruses. According to a 2001 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, laughter boosts the activity of your system’s natural killer cells and other defences by increasing the number of antibody-producing cells. Laughter enhances the response of disease-killing cells such as gamma-interferon, diseasefighting protein; B cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response. Stress response “We once thought laughter was the opposite of crying, but it’s more appropriate to think of it as the opposite of stress,” explains Nerenberg. He says laughter affects the nervous and endocrine systems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight compounds released during times of stress. Stress hormones bombard the heart, forcing it to beat as if in a constant state of fight or flight. But laughter appears to reduce the amount of stress hormones your body produces. Blood flow A good laugh can be good for your heart. Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and oxygen flow throughout your body. This may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by relaxing constricted blood vessels and promoting relaxation, which may lower levels of cortisol, a hormone known to contribute to high blood pressure, as do constricted blood vessels. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin measured the blood flow of 17 volunteers after watching a comedy or a documentary. The comedy group showed significantly increased heart rate and blood flow of 17 per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, blood vessels constricted by 15 per cent.

Constricted arteries can lead to high blood pressure. Social benefits Laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone, so plan some face time with friends. Sharing laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships strong and resilient. Simply anticipating laughter was found to release beneficial hormones while lowering levels of harmful chemicals in the body. Laughter can also stimulate creative thoughts that lead to a greater sense of self-worth and optimism. Speaking of optimism In 2011, Nerenberg worked with Maxwell House on a survey about optimism, and the results are positive. Eighty-five per cent of us consider ourselves optimistic; 86 per cent of us feel that optimism is contagious; and 79 per cent of us try to encourage pessimists to be more optimistic.

science to explain this, but it’s a fairly universal phenomenon, says Nerenberg. The opposite is true as well; if you walk around looking down, you’ll start to feel down. Fake it till you feel it Just going through the motions will trigger real laughter. Studies show the positive effects of smiling occur even if the smile is fake; faked laughter also provides the same benefits.

HYDROTHERAPY NATIONWIDE

Encourage your own healthier outlook by adding these simple laughter-inducing habits. Smile early and often in the day; it produces a mild hormonal change that can improve your mood and produce positive emotions. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and, like laughter, it’s contagious.
