ith the startling revelation in recent news that as many as one in four Irish children are now classed as overweight or obese, 'supersize' school uniforms now widely available, and specially made larger classroom chairs and tables in demand, it seems the country is finally waking up to the fat epidemic threatening our youth. According to the most up to date statistics available, approximately one in four primary school children now classifies as overweight or obese. As a result, uniform suppliers have reported a steady increase in the demand for larger sizes of waistlines, shirt collars, and bust width, with some children as young as 11 wearing large, adult-sized clothing to accommodate the extra weight they are carrying. The most worrying thing about this trend is the tendency of parents to overlook the signs that their child is overweight. Weight loss specialist and well known TV expert on the topic, Dr Eva Orsmond calls it "Living in denial" and explains that "There is a saying that if a parent thinks their child is overweight or slightly plump, the probability is that the child is already obese. A kid really shouldn't have any tummy, and if they do, that's a serious warning sign.'' Nobody wants to inflict a strict diet on their child, but the truth is, as today's lifestyle moves into more and more sedentary and dangerous territory, frightening statistics are emerging about just how much junk and how little exercise the youth of Ireland are getting.
