HILE there has been concern in recent months over problems with drug supplies with the possibility of hoarding in the lead-up to Brexit the indications are that pharmacists are already under pressure to secure essential supplies for their patients for other reasons.

In a report in the Irish Independent a Kerry pharmacist, Jack Shanahan, revealed that patients’ optimal treatments are being degraded by erratic supply. He revealed he placed a bulk order with a well-known generic drug maker recently and of "the hundred odd lines I ordered, over 20 were in short supply".

Apparently the most common medicines which are affected include blood-pressure pills and anti-inflammatory drugs to treat conditions like arthritis. The only alternative for patients who cannot get hold of their prescribed drug may be a second-choice medicine or, in some cases ration their supply.

Mr Shanahan, who is editor of the 'IPU Review', the journal for pharmacists, said he believed the problems go deeper than hoarding of drugs because of fears they will be low in stock after Brexit. One of the reasons for fluctuations is the way some pharmaceutical plants now produce one kind of medicine before going on to a batch of another drug.

If any issue is found the next medicine will not be released but they can run out of "buffer stocks", creating a gap in delivery of the product.

Supplies are also being slowed down by the Falsified Medicines Directive which aims to increase the security of the manufacturing and delivery of medicines in Europe.

OVERNOR of Arbour Hill Prison, Liam Dowling and exGovernor Mark O’Brien visited Ballina last week (festival week) to make a special presentation to Ballina Costume Company.

The Governor presented the costume company with a traditional Travellers’ Carriage and a Famine Era cottage at the Jackie Clarke Collection where it will be on public display for the present before being returned to the costume company Both the carriage and cottage were made by the prisoners from Arbour Hill and form part of a special inclusion project to be unveiled for National Heritage Day and Culture Night.

Drug shortages may impact patient care Continued from front page While the management of drugs shortages is the responsibility of the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), the medicines’ watchdog, Mr. Shanahan says the list of HPRA drugs shortages only reflects a small portion of the gaps in supply at a given time.

"Drug rationing is a fact of life for us all, under the guise of 'allocations'. We spend countless hours pleading with various functionaries to release stocks for

patients in urgent need of essential medicines."

In response, a spokeswoman for the HPRA said medicine shortages have become increasingly prevalent worldwide over the past decade. The causes are multi-factorial, including shortages of raw materials, manufacturing difficulties, product recalls due to potential quality defects, industry consolidations and the parallel trade of medicines to other markets.

She said: "Information relating to

shortages on the HPRA website is dynamic and changes depending on the current information to hand, including removal from the list when a shortage has been resolved."

It is not aware of any case where a patient was without treatment as a result of a shortage. In some cases where the medicine originally prescribed is unavailable, patients may be switched to a suitable therapeutic alternative following appropriate consultation with a healthcare professional.

AVING completed their successful nationwide tour, which included sellout performances in Galway Town Hall Theatre and an unforgettable night in Westport Town Hall, Breaking the Wall Productions will now bring their “theatrical masterpiece” NINE MONTHS to the Ocean Sands Hotel Hotel on Wednesday, 24th July at 7.30pm, as part of the Black Pig Festival.

You can expect to experience laughter and discomfort simultaneously with this production – with laughter never far from tears. NINE MONTHS is a kaleidoscope of Irish stories which provokes the question “have things changed for women in Ireland” as it touches on issues that relate to pregnancy and childcare over the past 50 years.

The audience will experience a series of montages where each separate story is

weaved together into a continuous narrative, using musicality as the link. Nine months is written, devised and performed by Imelda Reynolds and Frances Moylan and directed by Michael Irwin. The theatrical elements are improvisation, verbatim, music, story, song, text, physical movement within the context of comedy and tragedy.

The Show is suitable for 0-15s only.

The group will be performing free of charge and one of their support acts is also coming to Enniscrone, folk singer Mick Brown. Their performance will be part of The Black Pig Festival and it will be a fundraiser for The Enniscrone Community Playground.

HE competitive spirit is certainly evident in Mayo at present – and not just on the GAA field. In a different genre, three Mayo women are now in the running to be crowned Miss Universe Ireland 2019.

Selected for the finals are makeup artist Karen McShea, piano teacher Kaylyn McGrath and primary school teacher Shona Tuohy.

Karen hails from Swinford, Kaylyn from Ballina, while Shona is from Castlebar.

Thirty women will contest the final on August 1 in Dublin's Mansion House.

Karen McShea is an outgoing, positive and caring woman who works as a qualified beautician and makeup artist. She has ambitions of finding success in the modelling industry and using the connections to build her own business running a makeup studio.

She says her biggest obstacle in life has been self-love. Because of her height, she struggled with confidence in always being the tall girl that stood out. Today, however,

you see a woman that loves herself and loves wearing all the beautiful shoes she wants!

She is focused on Aware Ireland and her aim is to see children taught how to care for their mental and overall health, especially given the pressures of modern life and social media.

Accomplished musician Kaylyn McGrath has been singing and playing the piano since she was five. She completed all her formal piano and signing grades by the time she was 16, putting her talents into productive action, raising money for different causes including taking part in local voluntary productions of Les Misérables and Oliver Twist, which travelled to both Manchester and Dublin raising thousands for hospice.

She is a member of a local choir in Ballina which has organised numerous events to raise money for the restoration of the local cathedral, schools, and the local Saint Vincent de Paul.

She had the opportunity to share her

talents at the Papal visit in Phoenix Park and recently has established her own piano teaching practice.

Shona Tuohy – a bubbly and positive primary school teacher - aims to have her pupils (30 plus of them) leave her happy and optimistic about future possibilities.

Her journey into teaching tested her dedication after she fell short by the absolute minimum of points on leaving school. She chose to repeat, but also applied to have her papers rechecked.

Thankfully, one of her papers was miscalculated and she succeeded in achieving the necessary points. After the rechecks, she only had about four days to leave school, source accommodation in Dublin, and begin college three months after everyone else.

A daunting time as everyone had already established friendships and gotten used to college life, she soon settled in and has never looked back.

Every good wish to the three Miss Universe contestants.

Senator wants ESB to deliver rural broadband

Because they have the infrastructure and the track record Mayo Senator Rose Conway-Walsh has called on the government to ‘reach out’ to the ESB and direct the semi-state company to lead the roll-out of high-speed broadband in rural areas.

The senator made the comments following a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications meeting where Eir declared that it could deliver the National Broadband Plan (NBP) at a fraction of the current cost the State.

Eir’s Chief Executive Carolan Lennon told the Oireachtas Communications Committee they could complete the €3billion NBP for under €1 billion based on their approach to their 300k rural rollout, which aims to make broadband available to more than 300,000 rural homes on a commercial basis.

The telecommunications company were bidders for the National Broadband Plan but pulled out of the process with the US-based investment firm Granahan McCourt now the government’s preferred bidder for the

contract.

However, Senator Conway-Walsh said that the NBP could be delivered for a more affordable price than what is envisaged by the government but questioned if Eir were the company to do it. She cited Eir’s ‘poor customer services experiences’ as reasons for why they would not be her preferred option. She said that ESB have the infrastructure and the track record to deliver a project of this size and called on the government to reach out to them.

“The ESB brings with it a strong track record of delivering important infrastructural projects across the State, it has the existing infrastructure there and has a proven capacity to deliver. My constituents are all too familiar with poor customer services experiences with Eir, and if you travel through rural Ireland you can see quite clearly that Eir’s poles and ducts are actually in quite poor condition.

“We need to reach out to the ESB again and direct them as a semi-state body to deliver for the rest of rural Ireland,” she said.

Sligo Rovers confirm that Jack Keaney has left the club to join UCD

T

he 20-year-old moves to the Students on their scholarship programme.

Keaney played 54 times since graduating from the underage teams, scoring six goals.

Liam Buckley said: “We are sorry to lose

Jack from the squad. He has had this offer from UCD for a couple of seasons.

“He has decided, at this final juncture to do so, to take it up and we respect that decision.

“Jack has made great strides and for a man

of his age he has had a big influence on the pitch, as well as off of it. He can be very proud of that progress made.

“As a club we do not want to lose any player. Our education partnership will help that cause going forward. The underage system here is very good and it shows that players get opportunities.

“We are likely to lose one more player come the end of the month but we will look to bring in one or two to add to the squad.

We will update on that shortly.”

Jack Keaney said: “This has been an extremely difficult decision to make, and I want to thank everyone at Sligo Rovers, and the Sligo Rovers fans, for all the support they have given me over the last number of seasons.

“When I arrived at Sligo in January 2016 as a kid and I leave here not only having grown as footballer, but more importantly as a person too.

UNDAY, 30th June marked yet another historic day for Knock with the opening of the New Sonas Nursing Home at the outskirts of the village. The opening included a special blessing by Fr. Terence Harrington. TH Contractors Ltd., Castlebar, completed construction of their development of a 57-Bed Nursing Home and 9 Bungalows. The project has already given a jobs boost to the locality with forty construction jobs created during the development of the project, over the last two years.

ell-known Chieftain, musician and publican Matt Molloy has been named as one of the recipients of the Cong Hands Of Fame Award for 2019. The award, otherwise known as the ‘CHOFA’, is awarded to those who have through their work managed to promote Ireland at home and abroad.

Matt was pictured on Monday evening in his famous Westport pub, leaving an

impression of his hands on a special mould which will be cast in bronze by well-known sculptor Mark Rode from Killasser, Swinford. Mark, who is responsible for the design of the John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara statue in Cong, said he is very honoured to be able to work with such a talented and respected person as Matt Molloy.

Matt will join fellow musician John Sheahan in Cong on Sunday, September

15 for the unveiling of their hands and they will be special guests of the Cong Food Festival committee that afternoon.

Chairman of the Cong Food Festival Committee Jonathan Keane said it was ‘a great boost’ to the food festival to have both of these musicians attending and he looks forward to welcoming them on arrival with a special plated dish of Connemara Hill Lamb.

Leitrim brothers complete Ultra Trail in Italy In what has been described as a truly extraordinary achievement brothers Ricki and Brian Wynne from Drumshanbo have just completed the Lavaredo Ultra Trail in the Dolomite mountains in Italy.

Ricki, Brian and their brother, Alan, are ultra marathon runners, unfortunately Alan had to pull out due to injury but was there to help the crew for the race.

Ricki and Brian took part in the race that was 120km long and they climbed 5800m in total on Friday, June 30.

The race started at 11pm at night, which was an added challenge as well as the extreme 38 degree heat.. There were 1900 runners in the race and the Drumshanbo boys finished with the best of them! Ricki finished 20th and Brian 31st in the male section.

According to Triona Wynne, Ricki's wife: "The only people to beat them in the race were the elite and professional athletes!" Ricki is part of the Drumshanbo Athletic Club and Brian lives in Norway where he trains in the mountain there. The three brothers are former Leitrim Gaels players but are now all fully focused on Ultra Marathon running.

When Milton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’t too far off, according to some researchers who think laughter is like a wonder drug capable of treating a host of maladies related to stress and lifestyle.

“Laughter therapy is making people laugh for healing purposes,” says Albert Nerenberg, a journalist, documentary filmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in 2009) and laughologist, an expert who lectures on the science, practice and therapeutic effects of laughter. He brings the therapy to the workplace to help relieve stress and increase motivation, and to the health-care profession to promote and maintain health. But he cautions, “Occasionally, you hear wild claims that laughter therapy cures cancer or a terminal illness. The therapy holds great promise, but there is a danger of creating false expectations.”

Researchers continue to study laughter’s effects and have made some discoveries on how it benefits our well-being.

Brain chemicals From a neurological perspective, pioneering studies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University Medical Center in

California have shown that laughing triggers a flood of pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters, like dopamine, in the brain. Low levels of both these brain chemicals are associated with the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent of Canadians. Nerenberg has been using laughter therapy to help treat drug addicts at a residential drug rehab centre located near the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughing produces dopamine in the brain much in the same way as cocaine,” he explains, “so you essentially substitute laughing fits for drug addiction, addicting people to a positive behaviour rather than a negative one. They’re after rushes and really don’t care where they get them.”

Immune response A depressed immune system is vulnerable to colds and viruses.

According to a 2001 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, laughter boosts the activity of your system’s natural killer cells and other defences by increasing the number of antibodyproducing cells. Laughter enhances the response of disease-killing cells such as gamma-interferon, diseasefighting protein; B cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response.

Stress response “We once thought laughter was the opposite of crying, but it’s more appropriate to think of it as the opposite of stress,” explains Nerenberg. He says laughter affects the nervous and endocrine

systems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight compounds released during times of stress.

Stress hormones bombard the heart, forcing it to beat as if in a constant state of fight or flight.

But laughter appears to reduce the amount of stress hormones your body produces.

Speaking of optimism In 2011, Nerenberg worked with Maxwell House on a survey about optimism, and the results are positive.

Eighty-five per cent of us consider ourselves optimistic; 86 per cent of us feel that optimism is contagious; and 79 per cent of us try to encourage pessimists to be more optimistic.

Blood flow A good laugh can be good for your heart. Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and oxygen flow throughout your body.

This may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by relaxing constricted blood vessels and promoting relaxation, which may lower levels of cortisol, a hormone known to contribute to high blood pressure, as do constricted blood vessels.

Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin measured the blood flow of 17 volunteers after watching a comedy or a documentary.

The comedy group showed significantly increased heart rate and blood flow of 17 per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, blood vessels constricted by 15 per cent.

Constricted arteries can lead to high blood pressure.
