NE thing that was obvious since the start of the Brexit saga and the consequent reduction in the value of sterling was the burgeoning imports of used vehicles. Two years on and statistics from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show that 100,755 used cars were imported last year. It is apparent that Irish used car buyers made use of the strong euro and were able to pick up deals in the United Kingdom. Official statistics compiled by the Society show that of those 100,755 used cars imported in the last year, the overwhelming majority (95.8%) were imported from the UK. Further analysis by Fexco Corporate Payments found a 59% increase in imports from the UK last year compared with 2017. Furthermore, the average cost paid for vehicles imported from the UK by individual Irish buyers was €21,612, a 34% rise in the average figure paid in 2017. That figure also showed that Irish motorists who imported cars directly from the UK ordered higher specification models. David Lamb, Fexco’s head of dealing, said that Irish consumers were following a trend first noticed by Irish car dealers in the wake of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union back in 2016. “For years the cost – and red tape – of importing a UKregistered car into Ireland put off all but professional dealers or the most committed individual motorists,” he said. “Sterling’s continued weakness, however, has shifted that calculus, prompting ever more Irish motorists to look to the UK for their next car.” This situation has left many Irish dealers with a hefty stack of used cars on their hands. Meanwhile, DoneDeal’s Motor Industry review for 2018 also revealed that 640,326 used cars were sold in Ireland during 2018, a 3.6% drop from 664,253 in 2017. The website’s analysis found that Volkswagen was Ireland’s most popular used car brand last year, with 87,992 Volkswagens changing hands. The German manufacturer was followed by Toyota (73,834 sold), Ford (71,882 sold), Nissan (49,938 sold) and Audi (37,714 sold). Continued on Page 2

Enniscrone seeks plebiscite on local elections day

here are fears that if a plebiscite — or vote — on changing the name of Enniscrone does not take place

on the same day as the local elections next May, another year could pass before people in the west Sligo coastal town

get their say. There’s also uncertainty as to whether the plebiscite – whenever it takes place — will

be through a postal vote or by ballot. However, it cannot take place until legislation on placenames is passed by both the Seanad and Dail. Also, it’s understood a Register of Electors in the area eligible to vote in a plebiscite will have to be finalised. Local people want the name changed from Inniscrone — beginning with an ‘I’ — to the more commonly used name begining with an ‘E.’ During a discussion at yesterday’s meeting of Sligo County Council, Chief Executive Ciaran Hayes said the council would do everything to ensure the plebiscite can take place as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Independent Councillor Joe Queenan says he sees no reason why the plebiscite cannot take place on the same day as the elections next May.

New political party firms up for local elections in North-west A group in the North west is planning to complete the registration of its new political party this week. The Christian Democratic Party has been formed in the aftermath of abortion legislation having been introduced. The new party aims to represent those who voted against the legislation and now feel disenfranchised when it comes to political representation. Sean Wynne, director of elections for the Christian Democratic Party, will seek a seat on Leitrim County Council in the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District in this year’s local elections. He says they hope to have candidates in other areas. They will be holding meetings so people can come along to see what they are about. Meanwhile Sligo anti-abortion campaigner Amanda Gallagher is set to run in the Sligo Municipal District. Party representatives have confirmed to Ocean FM News that they will not be running any candidates in municipal districts where the former Sinn Fein TD Peadar Tóibin will be putting candidates forward. This indicates they will be running on a similar platform to Mr. Toibin

EirGrid confirm new power line plan

irGrid has confirmed the start and end points for the North Connacht Project, a new electricity line that will connect local renewable energy to the national grid and reinforce the regional electricity system. A series of studies have concluded that the line should run between the electricity substations at Moy near Ballina in Co. Mayo, and Tonroe, near Ballaghaderreen, in Co. Roscommon. EirGrid spokesperson Louise Glennon said: “This new line will provide significant electrical power required for the future

development of the region, including Knock Airport Strategic Development Zone, supporting the attractiveness of the region as a place in which to live, work and invest. According to a statement from the stateowned operator, the next step in the development of the project is to choose the appropriate technology and determine the most suitable route between the two substations. This phase will also establish whether the line will be overhead, underground, or a combination of both. There has previously been opposition to the use of overhead lines.

However, everybody is not happy with this. Niall Frain from the ‘Ballaghaderreen Against Pylons’ group was critical of EirGrid’s approach to the development, claiming there was a lack of consultation with local groups. “EirGrid haven’t touched base with any of the local groups here. The announcement (of the new power line) went out late on a Friday evening. These are typical tactics so it doesn’t surprise me,” he said. The next phase of the plan is expected to take up to a year following studies to determine the best route for the line.

4% rise is Mayo house prices predicted for 2019 THE price of the average three-bed semi in County Mayo is expected to rise by 4% in the next 12 months, according to a survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance.Prices in the county rose by 6.7% to €160,000 in 2018 – with no change between September and December. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the second-hand property market in towns and cities countrywide. “The market remained static towards the end of the year and sales are taking a

couple of weeks longer to complete,” said Kevin Burke of REA McGreal Burke in Castlebar, where time taken to sell increased from six to nine weeks in Q4. “The Castlebar and Westport markets remain strong and we expect growth to continue in 2019. “The number of 100% cash buyers has diminished and levels of mortgage approved purchasers are not growing. Demand is high from first-time buyers and for lower-priced properties, but when a trade-up or asset exceeds €300,000, the sale takes longer.” The average semi-detached house nationally now costs €236,287, the Q4 REA

Average House Price Survey has found – a rise of 0.6% on the Q3 2018 figure of €234,284. Overall, the average house price across the country rose by 4.6% in 2018 – a decrease on the 5.4% recorded to September and indicating that the market is continuing to steady after an 11.3% overall rise in 2017. Growth in the commuter counties also slowed to 0.38% in the last three months – an annual rise of 4.18% – with the average house now selling for €249,472. This is an annual rise of €10,000 and growth of €2,000 in the last three months.

Drumshanbo based Gunpowder Irish Gin was last week listed for sale by LCBO, which retails and distributes alcoholic beverages in Ontario, as the Irish gin category begins to make a splash in the

Canadian market. LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) has a monopoly of alcohol off-trade sales in Ontario, the province where 40 per cent of the Canadian population lives. Ontario is the largest controlled market for alcohol sales in the world and LCBO is the largest buyer of alcohol in the world. The news follows a successful trade mission to Canada last year, led by Michael

Creed TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food & The Marine. The Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) joined the trade mission which focused on increasing exports of Irish drinks categories to Canada following the completion of the new trade deal between the EU and Canada, known as the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This agreement removed the remaining tariffs on Irish gin entering Canada. It also reformed provincial liquor board levels on imported spirits, which has helped the pricing of premium Irish gins in Canada. During the trade mission, Minister Creed, at the request of ABFI, asked the President of LCBO to consider listing Irish gin. This request by the Minister and follow-up lobbying by ABFI resulted in the decision by LCBO to run the first-ever competitive process to select Irish gin for listing in their stores. The other gins listed are: Galway Gin and Glendalough Gin. Patricia Callan, Director of Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) said: “Last year, Irish gin became increasingly popular among international consumers. The latest figures from the CSO show that the value of exports of Irish gin from the Republic of Ireland was up 213 per cent to €4.2 million in the first nine months of 2018.” “On behalf of the Irish gin industry, I would like to particularly thank Minister Creed for his support in opening-up the world’s largest controlled market to Irish Gin.”

Celebrations as Mayo teacher wins €31,000 for aunt There were celebrations in South Mayo last week woman representing her aunt went on Winning Streak and won her a tidy €31,000 on the National Lottery TV game show on RTE One. Mary Kirrane, from Mayo Abbey, Co. Mayo, said she had no choice when she was asked by her aunt, Annie Kirrane, to take her place on Winning Streak as “you just can’t say no to Annie!”. Annie was stunned after her name was selected to appear on the show back in December and asked her niece to play for her. Mary, a primary school teacher, was born in the United States after her parents, both from Mayo, met and married in San Francisco. The family moved back to Ireland when Mary was 18 months old and she has lived in Mayo Abbey ever since. Mary teaches in Mayo Abbey National School and her colleagues and the students were excited at the prospect of seeing her on the show. Mary also works as a carer for her mum Ellen and has one sibling, her brother John, who will be in the Winning Streak audience. Mary said that her aunt Annie deserves this slice of luck as she is such a lovely person. She says Annie has no plans for the cash as she is still coming to terms with the win. Peter celebrates The Greenway in song

h The Greenway down our way, taking the route of the old railway. On 26 miles of ground, from Westport town to Achill Sound. Go on your bike, get on The Great Western Greenway. This is the catchy chorus of “The Greenway Song”, written and sung by Newport native Peter Mylett. Peter lives in the UK where he has performed as a solo Irish, Country and folk singer for the last 30 years. Peter was inspired to tell the story of “The Great Western

Greenway” after seeing its success year on year, since it’s opening in 2010. Upon returning from Manchester to visit family and friends, he witnessed the local towns being rejuvenated, since the downturn of the economy in 2008. Peter said: “Whilst over in Ireland in summer 2017, I paid a visit to Mayo County Councillor Michael Holmes, to find out who came up with the original idea of developing “The Great Western Greenway” (G.W.G) Michael explained that the

railway service that ran from Westport to Achill Island ended in 1937. In the mid-2000s the idea of the G.W.G. cycle/pedestrian track, was formulated by a group of County council engineers, who had a vision regarding its construction. With the help of a team of like-minded people and the backing of the Government and Failte Ireland they were able to forge ahead with this initiative. The landowners were approached, each individual reacted differently, but with persistence from the County Council, the vast majority agreed for The Great Western Greenway to be constructed. It has now adopted the name “The Greenway “and the first phase, Newport to Mulranny, was opened in 2010. Other sections were later added from Mulranny to Achill Sound and Newport to Westport, with the result of the track being 42 Kilometres (26 miles) long between Westport and Achill Sound. The Greenway is open to the public 365 days a year and on an average summer’s day, it is used by approximately 1000 cyclists and pedestrians. Other County Councils throughout Ireland, both North and South, have taken this original idea with the end result that a network of all these tracks will be constructed throughout the country.

It has created over 200 extra jobs for the Cafes, Restaurants, Hotels, Cycle Hire and extra Taxis required in the adjacent towns and villages, to cope with the demand. This scenic track has generated millions of Euros of extra revenue to the area.” Says Peter, I knew with all this information I could write a good song and I called it “The Greenway Song”. The single was released in June this year and is receiving regular airplay on radio stations thought Ireland and the UK. With its catchy chorus, lively beat and a hint of humour it has reached out to all age groups. The single can be downloaded on Spotify, Amazon and iTunes and the video to the song, which features on Sky TV country music programmes can also be viewed on Youtube search “Peter Mylett The Greenway Song Radio Edit”. “The Greenway Song” was recorded in April this year and continues to receive good airplay on radio stations throughout Ireland and the UK. In August this year Peter was invited by Tony Hennigan to be part of The Manchester TradFest, which performed in various venues throughout the county. He has also done a video to the song and it has featured on Sky TV country music shows including Ireland West TV and Michael Commins country show.

Way clear for new Westport hostel 100 people may be accommodated in a new hostel set to be developed in Westport after An Bord Pleanála rejected residents’ concerns over the development. It will be a three-storey building, to be known as The Old Steelworks Hostel and will be located on Altamont Street, between the railway station and the former Railway Tavern Pub. The development by Westport-based Gibbons Building and Civil Engineering Ltd includes the demolition of an existing

vacant industrial building.Mayo County Council granted planning permission for the project in August, but the decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála (ABP) by local residents concerned it would lead to antisocial behaviour and vandalism in the area. In their appeal, over 20 residents stated that the area was inhabited by many elderly people and that they feared that the hostel would lead to increased noise pollution late at night from patrons of the hostel returning after socialising in town.

They also highlighted the increased potential for anti-social behaviour and vandalism. However, in his report, the Bord Pleanala inspector stated that the proposed development would make a ‘positive contribution to the town’. He said he is satisfied that ‘the proposed use would be broadly in compliance with the land-use zoning objectives for the area, would complement neighbouring land uses and would have negligible potential to impact on residential amenities’. “A condition to restrict noise levels potentially emanating from the proposed facility would suitably protect the amenities of residential property in the vicinity,” he added in his report. Concerns were also raised regarding traffic safety and parking and the impact on the architectural heritage of the area. However, Mr McLoughlin stated he was satisfied that the development would neither negatively impact traffic nor ‘detract from the character, setting or special interest of the Westport Town Centre Architectural Conservation Area’. Changes to the plan from the permission sought originally saw the floor area increase and the number of bedrooms rise from nine to eleven. A proposed vehicular entrance was also omitted and replaced with a pedestrian gateway leading onto a paved amenity and bike-parking area.Mayo County Council stated that as the proposed development, which is located adjacent to both the railway station and the Greenway, it is ‘an ideal location for a tourist hostel’.

JOANIE MADDEN, born in New York of Irish parents and raised in a musical household, her mother hails from Miltown Malbay, County Clare and her father Joe, an All-Ireland Champion accordion player was a native of Portumna, County Galway. She began taking lessons from legendary flutist and National Heritage

Award winner Jack Coen, and within a few short years, she had achieved great success winning the world championship in Irish music on both the concert flute and tin whistle. During that time, Joanie also became the first American to win the coveted Senior All-Ireland Championship on the whistle. MARY COOGAN was born in New York and raised in a musical household. She is a founding member of Cherish the Ladies. Her mother came from Castlerea in County Roscommon and her father Jim was a great accordion player whose parents emigrated from County Waterford. Her father passed down his love of Irish music to Mary and she became a self-taught guitar, mandolin and bouzouki player.

MIRELLA MURRAY grew up in Claddaghduff on the North West coast of Connemara in County Galway. Her father John Joe, a notable sean nós dancer, came from Inishark Island and had a deep understanding and love for traditional music. Mirella studied the piano accordion with Mary Finn and it was at music classes that she met up with fiddler Liz Kane from Letterfrack. Mirella won the accordion All-Ireland championship and duet All-Ireland championship with Liz Kane. KATHLEEN BOYLE from Glasgow, Scotland comes from a family steeped in the traditional music of Donegal. Her father Hughie is a talented musician and handed down his love of music to her. Kathleen is a talented pianist and accordion player and has won

All-Scotland and All-Britain titles on both instruments. NOLLAIG CASEY is one of Ireland’s most gifted musicians, with her own unique way of playing traditional Irish music on the fiddle and has such a distinctive sound that it would be impossible to mistake it for that of anyone else. They are in constant demand worldwide as their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continues to grow. Their name may come from a traditional Irish jig but after thirty years, they have proven that the jig is still not up as these ladies blaze forward into another decade of music making. North Mayo and West Sligo were ably represented with entries from St. Mary’s Secondary School in Ballina and Jesus and Mary Secondary School in Enniscrone. Leah Hannon, a second year student, and her cousin Lauren Tuffy, Transition Year, flew the flag for Ballina with their project - To Identify a Novel and Wildlife Supporting Use of Seafood Waste in Coastal Protection Against Destructive Ocean Waves. Their project in the Intermediate Group section of the Biological and Ecological Sciences was Highly Commended by Judges who were impressed with their research into coastal erosion prevention and the creation of a safe habitat for sea life using seafood waste, shellfish shells, as an aggregate in their coastal defence which incorporated a safe haven for marine life. Matthew Blakeney represented the

Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, with his project - From the Margins to the Middle: A Mathematical Analysis of the Evolution of Rhythmic Cadence in Rap Music. Matthew received a second place award for his project, in the Intermediate Individual section of the

Councillors urged to continue with St. Patrick’s Day trips Local councils in Sligo have been urged not to stop sending representative abroad for the St Patrick’s Day celebrations. The trips have in the past been regularly branded as mere junkets. But a consultant on developing a strategy for engaging with those abroad says research shows they are ‘hugely important’ in creating and maintaining links that have many benefits. Mark Conway, of Tyrone based company Venture Network, told Sligo councillors in a presentation yesterday on developing a Diaspora Strategy for the next five years that they would stop such trips at their peril.

Margaret Heffernan spoke passionately on behalf of the charity followed by The Funky Fashion Frolics – Mike Mc Carthy & Paul Carroll who judged “Best Splash of Yellow”. GOOD ORAL HEALTH Mouth Ulcers For most people, mouth ulcers are a minor problem that needs minimal treatment. For some, the pain of ulcers can be very severe and difficult to control. Mouth ulcers are usually caused by damage from food, teeth or dentures, or are sometimes due to infections. Most will heal within a week or two but ill-fitting dentures may need to be adjusted or replaced. After removing the cause these ulcers are best treated with an antiseptic mouthwash such as chlorhexidine (Corsodyl). Treatment The treatment of mouth ulcers depends on their type and cause. Many over-the-counter preparations sold for treating mouth ulcers may irritate the lining of the mouth. They may reduce the pain of the ulcer but may make it last longer. Chlorhexidine mouthwash is safe and fairly effective. It is used for one minute, twice daily. It is important to brush your teeth before using chlorhexidine, as it will stain the plaque on teeth. It is advisable to use chlorhexidine at least half an hour after using toothpaste since the foaming agents in most toothpastes stop chlorhexidine from working. It is also important not to swallow the

mouthwash after rinsing. For best results, avoiding rinsing the mouth, or drinking, for 10 minutes after using chlorhexidine. Mouth ulcers may take up to two weeks to fully disappear. The most painful phase usually ends after three or four days. They will usually just go away on their own. Unfortunately there is no known way of stopping them from recurring. Abscess An abscess is a collection of pus (infected fluid) surrounded by a thick wall. Abscesses can occur in almost any part of the body. ‘Boils’ are abscesses in the skin. Soft tissue abscesses occur in the tissue just beneath the skin. Abscesses can also occur in the abdomen, liver, brain, anus, rectum, kidney, lung, tonsils, ovaries, heart, pharynx, spleen, vagina and mouth. Occasionally, infection may spread from an abscess to surrounding tissues. A tooth abscess is usually a result of dental decay. As the bacteria multiply in the skin or soft tissues, the body responds by forming a wall around the area to keep the bacteria from spreading. The bacteria in this pocket (abscess) continue to multiply, the middle of the abscess turns to liquid and the area becomes more swollen and painful. Symptoms include swelling, redness, tenderness, fever and shivers. A tooth abscess usually causes

severe toothache. This may be a sharp or throbbing pain that gets worse on chewing. There may also be a bitter taste in the mouth and bad breath. Abscesses in other parts of the body such as the liver or brain are less obvious because they are not visible. However, there may be pain in the affected area, accompanied by fever, sweats, chills and general aches and pains. Abscesses in the brain or spinal cord can cause drowsiness or confusion and require urgent medical attention.

GET YOUR HOME WINTER READY 10 tips to save on your heating bill this winter

etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check? That’s why we love this ‘Deaerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99 6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder

Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling. 9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the room- turn it off when it has the job done.
