ANGER OVER PROPOSALS FOR OLDER PEOPLE TO DOWNSIZE THEIR HOMES O

ne man has criticised the Government for suggesting older people could downsize their homes to help with the property crisis. Elderly people living in large homes may be offered tax incentives and grants to downsize. It is a measure being considered ahead of the publication of the 'Housing For All' plan. The plan is not finalised with a Government spokesperson saying "nothing is set in stone" and "everything is still on the table". The plan will layout a roadmap for how to sort the housing crisis - with one such measure being considered to encourage elderly people in three and four bedroom homes to 'rightsize'. Gerry O'Leary (63) was on Newstalk radio and said that a lack of housing is not his fault. "If the Government want to encourage people to rightsize, and let's be quite honest it's actually downsize, they'd want to be able to produce a building or a property that will be equal or better than what I'm in at the moment. "I'm enraged that anyone would even suggest or even prefer an argument that because of my age that I should consider getting rid of my

house and downsizing.” "Something that I've worked at for 40+ years, and I retired some years ago, how dare anybody tell me that I should downsize or get rid of my house so that somebody else can get it." Gerry says his house is for his daughter, who herself cannot afford a home. "This argument has been preferred for for quite a while over the last number of years. "If the Government cannot at the moment, or will not, provide adequate housing for society.... if they turn around then and say that because Gerry O'Leary is 64-years-old or whatever and that he should really downsize: how dare anybody tell me that I should downsize. "I'm holding on to my house, by the way... for my daughter, so that she can get a house. "She will not be able to get a mortgage because it's too expensive to buy a house. "How can anybody tell me, or how dare anybody tell me, I should really get rid of my house so that somebody else can have it. "People can't afford to buy it because they can't get a mortgage, and the Government won't do anything about it. "It's a bit tongue-in-cheek by the Government to even suggest [this]". Anger over proposals for older people to downsize their homes Continued from front page

"As an elderly person I want something that I can live in for the rest of my days and hand over - why don't you get some of the younger people who have one and two properties, or three properties, let them give up their home to the Government who have failed to provide adequate housing. "It's not my fault 'Dictating to older people' Alice Leahy, director of the Alice Leahy Trust, told Pat Kenny show that the Government needs to be careful. "I do know there is a very serious problem and it's been allowed to develop over the years. "This does need to be addressed - but when I saw 'right sizing' and 'age in place' I thought 'Here we go again, another glossy report'. "I must say I do think the politicians are trying to do something, and I wouldn't want to dismiss that. "But have you ever noticed that when the Government changes they decide that they will change the title of one agency or

another? "There will be the enormous expense, there will be the spin, the publicity... but the work remains the same. "So when I saw 'right sizing' and 'age in place' that's what I thought of." Ms Leahy says one particular aspect is making her uneasy. "It's almost as if we could be dictated to say 'You're not living in the right place, you're not ageing in the right place let us sort it for you'. "I think it's much more complex than that, and we mustn't ignore the human condition". Referring to the writings of Anthony Powell, Ms Leahy said: "Growing old is like being increasingly penalised for a crime you haven't committed. "And the more I hear about cocooners and now we're looking at ageing in the right place... we must make sure that older people are treated with respect. "Many of the older people - and dare I say all of them - have worked hard, have saved hard to have bought a house maybe that has all their memories and they have built

up their friends in the community. "Where do those people, where do they go to?" She says there needs to be a "whole rethinking", adding: "And very often the very people who object to building such places are maybe the very councillors who, are on the one hand, promoting such accommodation and then they maybe object to it when it's put before them. "Is this just another bureaucratic exercise?" Responding to one texter who inquired about a house-swap in his area, she suggested that politicians need to listen to the people involved. "I do know there'd be lots of people who would love to downsize in the area where they live, and like that man said... to maybe swap, why are they not doing this? "Is it just that they're not aware of the possibilities that are there, and there are possibilities there. "And I think maybe they are just listening to the people who are going through a bookkeeping exercise - they are not listening, I think"

Irish public urged to conserve water during busy staycation season to avoid water shortages

Irish Water is predicting an increase in domestic and commercial demand for water over the coming months and customers are asked to take some simple measures to conserve water in their homes, their businesses and on their farms. Small changes can have lasting results. For example: Take a shorter shower and save up to 10 litres of water per minute Fix dripping taps or leaking toilets in your home When brushing your teeth or shaving, turn off the tap and save up to 6 litres of water per minute Save and reuse water collected from baths, showers, and hand basins in the garden Avoid using paddling pools In the garden use a rose head watering can instead of a hose and aim for the roots If you need to wash your car, use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose Report any leaks to Irish Water at 1800 278 278 Ger Greally, Asset Operations Lead for

Irish Water, said: “We would like to wish the Irish public well as they enjoy some well-deserved staycations this summer. We are continuing to work with our local authority partners to ensure everyone enjoys a reliable water supply during the busy summer period and beyond. We are also asking the public to take note of their water usage and conserve where possible. “Conserving water is something that we should be doing year round, not just when supplies come under pressure due to drought conditions and seasonal increases in demand. As demand increases we are appealing to the public to redouble their efforts in conserving water in the home, in the garden, at work and on the farm, especially during the busy months of July and August when staycations will be at a peak and demand is expected to soar. “This applies particularly to tourist hotspots in popular coastal regions and tourist destinations throughout the country of which we are lucky to have so many and

where large influxes of visitors are expected. “There are lots of helpful tips for conserving water on water.ie but the key things are to leave the hose and the pressure washer in the shed; don’t use paddling pools; reuse household water for the garden; and take shorter showers. Safeguarding the supply of water is essential at this time when handwashing and hygiene is of critical importance. We are calling on everyone to play their part.” Irish Water has been carefully monitoring all of its raw water sources, that is the water from lakes, rivers, springs and ground sources that feed our water treatment plants. Night time restrictions have been used in a small number of locations across the country to ensure a consistent day time supply for all. While the public are being asked to conserve, there are currently no plans to implement a Water Conservation Order. “In Irish Water, we are continually working with our local authority partners to look at what we call the supply/demand balance. This means that we need to ensure that we can supply more treated drinking water than is required for use. We can manage this by conserving water; losing less by repairing leaks; and supplying smarter by ensuring that all of our plants are working optimally. “We can all work together to protect our supplies and safeguard our water for essential usage.” Further water conservation information is available on the Irish Water website www.water.ie/conservation Irish Water continues to work at this time with our Local Authority partners, contractors and others to safeguard the health and well-being of staff and the public and to ensure the continuity of drinking water and wastewater services.

Sligo locals feature in new video urging those living in and visiting Sligo to Think Before You Flush

S

ligo locals team up with the Clean Coasts and Irish Water’s Think Before You Flush campaign for a new video showcasing the beautiful Sligo coastline, while urging people not to flush unsuitable items down the toilet. Issued Monday 28th June 2021 – In a brand new video produced by the Think Before You Flush campaign, people living and visiting Sligo are encouraged to keep their local environment; beaches and riverways clean by only flushing the 3 P’s – pee, poo and paper, down the toilet and putting wipes, sanitary items and cotton bud sticks in the bin. Launched on Ocean FM’s Facebook page, this video features recognisable faces from Sligo: Francie Boylan, radio presenter at

Ocean FM; Yvonne Lang, lecturer at Sligo IT; and community leader, kayaker and beach cleaner Martina Butler. Environmental Awareness Officer for Sligo County Council, Pete Murtagh, and Irish Water Environmental Scientist and sea swimmer, Mary O’Hara, also feature in the video. Filmed and edited by local videographer Fionn Rogers, this video showcases the beautiful and diverse coastline and waterways Sligo has to offer. Presenting stunning shots of Enniscrone, Rosses Point, Mullaghmore and Doorly Park, the video is a celebration of Sligo’s wonderful natural environment, while offering simple steps to help conserve and protect it, directly from home. The video urges the people of Sligo to make small changes in their flushing behaviour, by never flushing items like wipes, cotton buds and sanitary waste down the toilet. The video highlights the impacts of flushing unsuitable items and encourages positive behavioural change. Why #ThinkB4UFlush? Unlike toilet paper, which is designed to disintegrate quickly in our pipes and sewage systems, the synthetic materials in items like wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products makes them very strong and unable to break down. When these unsuitable items are flushed down the toilet, they can cause blockages in our wastewater network, pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants. These blockages can result in surface water overflows which can end up on our beaches and in our oceans, damaging our marine environment. Think Before You Flush is a public awareness

campaign operated by Clean Coasts in partnership with Irish Water, which addresses the issue of flushing these unsuitable items down the toilet. Speaking about the campaign, Olivia Jones, Clean Coasts Development Officer for the North West said: “Sligo has some of the most scenic beaches and waterways in Ireland and behind those pristine sites are numerous Clean Coasts’ groups who for many years have done an amazing job in protecting their environment through awareness raising and regular clean-ups. Unfortunately, some of the litter collected on these cleanups comes directly from our

bathrooms, such as flushed cotton buds, and wet wipes. As a result, we are asking you the public to help keep our coast and waterways clean without even leaving your home by taking the time to ‘Think Before You Flush’. Talking about the size and scale of the problem associated with flushing the wrong things down the toilet, Mary O’Hara, Irish Water said: “In Sligo items such as wipes, sanitary products, hair, dental floss are flushed down the toilet every day instead of simply putting them in the bin. Every year in Sligo we clean hundreds of blockages caused by items like wipes from our wastewater network, which is

Mayo house prices rise 0.9% in three months -survey The price of the average second-hand three-bed semi in County Mayo has risen by 0.9% to €167,500 in the last three months, according to a national survey by Real Estate Alliance. The average time taken to sell in the county fell by a fortnight to four weeks this quarter, the Q2 REA Average House Price Index shows. The average price in Westport rose 1% to €247,500 this quarter and Castlebar

prices rose by 0.9% to €167,500. “We are seeing increasing demand, in particular from people who have been working in other cities but are from Castlebar,” said Robert McGreal of REA McGreal Burke. “Without supply of new builds and lack of supply for vendors to move to, there is a tight restriction in the market. All properties at €200,000 and below are moving extremely quickly. “In Westport, we are seeing continued limited supply with strong demand. Firsttime buyers are the main drivers of the market, followed by investors. “With the continued low supply, it is expected that prices will continue to increase over the coming months.” Average house prices have risen by almost €1,000 per week nationwide since the end of March, the REA Average House Price Survey has found. The survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an accurate picture of the second-hand property market in towns and cities countrywide. Fuelled by pent-up demand and the return of physical viewing, the marketplace is also seeing the lowest supply and the shortest time taken to sell in recent history. And as multiple buyers bid for scarce

supplies, the average three bed semi is now reaching sale agreed after just four weeks on the market across the country – less than half the ten-week average this time last year. The price of a three-bedroomed semidetached house across the country rose by €10,000 over the past three months to €253,685 – representing an annual increase of 8%. The biggest rises in Q2 came in commuter counties and the country’s large towns as buyers continue to move out further from the city in preparation for long-term hybrid working situations. In Dublin city, house prices rose by €1,500 per week in Q2, increasing from €438,500 in March to a present rate of €456,667. Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford cities shared a combined increase of 3.5% in the past 12 weeks with prices rising by €10,000 to an average of €275,000. Three bed semis in commuter counties rose 4.33% by over €11,000 in the past three months to an average of €270,111 – with the average home selling in just three weeks, down from a high of 11 weeks a year ago. As the flight to rural locations continues, prices in the rest of the country’s towns rose by over 4.6% in Q2 to €176,690.

having a knock-on effect on our local environment. Mary continued: “We are appealing to everyone who enjoys Sligo’s beautiful coastlines, waterways and the various water activities such as swimming, surfing, kayaking etc to help us keep our local environment free of sewage related litter. A simple solution is to only flush the 3 P’s – pee, poo and paper down the toilet and throw wipes and other sanitary products in the bin. This summer, we are asking you to Think Before You Flush.” You can check out the video on Ocean FM’s Facebook page or Clean Coasts' YouTube channel.

Achill Island businesses leading the way in water conservation as tourist season swings into gear

I

rish Water working in partnership with Mayo County Council would like to thank businesses on Achill Island for their ongoing efforts to promote and support water conservation efforts on the Island and prevent potential water shortages. Gerard Greally, Asset Operations Lead for Irish Water, explains: “Over the last number of years the west of Ireland and the islands were particularly badly hit by the drought with months of restrictions in place. Safeguarding that water supply for the future for customers on Achill Island and visitors to the island is a vital focus for us. “With over 2,800 customers on the island and a further influx of visitors during the summer months it’s now more important than ever for people to conserve water where possible to ensure a continuous supply for everyone for essential handwashing and hygiene purposes. Supporting businesses to become more sustainable in how they use water is critical to safeguarding water supplies for the future.” Earlier this year Irish Water completed a number of upgrades to equipment at the water treatment plant on Achill Island and the addition of new equipment during this phase of works, has improved the quality of the water and the capacity of the plant to treat higher volumes of water. Work is also underway to reduce the level of leakage and unaccounted for water within the supply network with a dedicated find & fix team currently on the island. Anyone who sees a leak on the public side is asked to please report it to Irish Water on 1800 278 278 and we will send a team out to fix it. In addition to fixing public leaks, Irish Water’s First Fix Free scheme was recently extended meaning an additional 600,000 customers can now benefit from Irish Water’s free leak repair service. The scheme provides customers with support in identifying and fixing leaks. Irish Water offers a free leak investigation and, when a potential leak has been identified, a free repair to a leak detected on an external

The

supply pipe on the customer’s property and this is open to residents on Achill Island. Chris McCarthy, Achill Tourism is encouraging everyone on the island to lower their water consumption: “Water is a precious resource and we want everyone to work together to conserve water and to try to prevent potential water supply shortages, which could lead to water restrictions in the future. It’s really important that we all play our part to lower water consumption, this not only helps protects our local supply – it can also protect the environment and reduce our bills.” Speaking about the importance of water conservation, Michael Kane, Achill Outdoor Education and Training Centre, added: “Water is a critically important resource and supporting businesses to become more sustainable in how they use water is critical to safeguarding our supplies for the future. Even small changes such as identifying potential water waste, raising awareness

amongst our staff and visitors, or upgrading to water efficient devices can help to save water and money.” While handwashing remains a priority, simple water conservation efforts can have a big impact on reducing demand on the water supply. There are tips on how to conserve water in your home, in your business and on your farm on our website at https://www.water.ie/conservation/ Every day Irish business uses circa 510 million litres of water in Ireland (the equivalent of 10 times the amount needed to supply a city the size of Limerick). Irish Water is also running a water stewardship training programme in partnership with Central Solutions and the Lean & Green Skillnet. The training will support our business customers with training on how to lower water consumption and reduce operating costs while protecting the environment. Galway based Palliare completes $8M Funding Round Palliare, an emerging company with the vision to create a safer operating room, today announced the closing of an oversubscribed $8 million Series A funding round. The round was led by leading European Life Sciences Venture Capital firm Seroba Life Sciences, with participation from Luxembourg-based SCM AD Ventures, The Western Development Commission, and several private investors. The funds will be used to support US commercial launch activities related to Palliare’s EVA15 insufflator and smoke evacuation system, as well as new Research & Development activities. There has been growing awareness of the hazardous nature of surgical smoke to the operating room staff, and various medical

organizations in USA have been lobbying for the safe evacuation of all surgical smoke. The COVID-19 pandemic further heightened awareness across the clinical community of the exposure of medical staff to aerosolized viruses in the operating room. In 2021 alone, nine (9) US states have introduced smoke evacuation bills, and more are anticipated in the coming months. With the close of the Series A round, Jennifer McMahon, Principal at Seroba, will join the board. Jennifer commented, “We are delighted to back the experienced Palliare team who have identified the clinical need for a user-friendly continuous pressure insufflator. We recognize the growing trend towards minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and the demand to create a cleaner and safer operating room for patients and clinical staff alike.” Tomás Ó Síocháin, CEO of the Western Development Commission said “We are delighted to continue our investment journey with Palliare, building on the world renowned MedTech sector that exists in the West of Ireland, drawing on the skilled workforce this is an example of the leading edge indigenous innovation in the western region. Innovation such as this improves the lives of patients, drives economic activity and supports and sustains vibrant communities. In further news, the company is pleased to announce the appointment of Julie Tupen as US Vice President of Sales. Julie brings extensive commercial experience to the management team from having previously worked with such companies as Covidien, Invuity, and most recently Hologic. Commenting on the new appointment, Scott Flora, Chairman said “We are delighted to welcome Julie Tupen to head up our US commercial launch of EVA15, a product that offers a compelling value proposition in providing both continuous pressure insufflation and laparoscopic smoke evacuation in a highly compact form at a very competitive price point.”

fac, Ireland’s farming, food and agribusiness specialist professional services firm, is advising Mayo farmers to consider forming a Registered Farm Partnership. Registered Farm Partnerships (RFPs) can be a great way to increase succession options, improve profitability, enhance work-life balance, reduce Income tax, obtain 50% stock relief, and avail of a potential double-ceiling on investments that are eligible for the new TAMS II Capital Grant. Philip O’Connor, Head of Farm Support at ifac said: “Registered Farm Partnership (RFP’s) are a great business structure to allow a business grow and within family entities, they enable the road to succession. They work across all types of farms, from large-scale full-time farm operations to small and part-time farmers. Every farm, regardless of size, is different and RFP’s have the flexibility to work across almost all situations” However, changing your farm structure is a major decision that requires careful planning. When considering forming an RFP, ifac recommends adopting a threestep approach, as below:

STEP 1: Assessment The first step is to assess the business case. Relevant tax, legal, succession and Department of Agriculture factors need to be examined and potential pitfalls identified and resolved. This is a key phase as it ensures that you are entering the partnership for the right reasons and at the right time. There is nothing wrong with postponing a business structure change if the business case does not make sense or the timing is wrong.

STEP 2: Execution If you decide to go ahead, the second step is getting the paperwork in order so that your partnership documentation can be submitted to the Department of Agriculture’s RFP unit and your new partnership can go ‘live’. Your herd number will need to be moved, a partnership agreement drafted, a tax number obtained and a partnership bank account opened. Herd registration forms must be sent to your local DVO for processing (seek advice on how best to operate multiply herd numbers within an RFP).

STEP 3: Implementation Your accountant will tell you the date that your new structure is trading from. This is when you start using your new partnership bank account for all farm lodgements and purchases. You must inform your customers and suppliers and ensure that invoices are issued using the new partnership name. To achieve a successful RFP, it is essential that the three steps outlined above are carried out correctly. Thereafter, the partnership should be reviewed every year and the capital account signed/agreed upon by all partners. For advice and assistance, contact your local ifac office where our team can provide more information and guide you through the process. RFP CHECKLIST Banking • Are all my sales and purchases going through the partnership bank account? • Have I moved all farming/business direct debits/standing orders to the RFP account? • Have I moved my overdraft (if necessary) to a new account? Sales/Purchases • Are all my sales and purchase invoices in the partnership name? • Mart purchase/sales documents? • Coop milk/trading statements? • Factory documents? • General invoices?

Grants/Schemes • Has my agriculture advisor applied for BPS using my RFP number? •Have they moved all other relevant schemes (e.g., GLAS, TAMS) to the new RFP? • Are herd numbers being used correctly?

Mayo farmers set to gain from CAP Reform deal, according to local MEP

As the CAP Reform deal is set to be wrapped up by the weekend, local Independent MEP Luke Ming Flanagan says the majority of Mayo farmers are set to benefit greatly from it. MEP Flanagan says the European Parliament is playing hardball and is sticking to 100 percent convergence, which would result in all farmers securing the same payment per hectare regardless of their terrain. But he says the European Council is looking for a deal, closer to 85 percent.

Either way he believes, the result will benefit many farmers in Mayo, Galway and Donegal. If 100 percent convergence is secured, Mayo farmers now receiving 221 euro per hectare payments will see that rise to 265 euro per hectare. MEP Flanagan has been telling Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley why he believes the CAP reform deal on offer and about to be agreed, looks set to be good news for a majority of Mayo farmers.

Elderly people could be offered tax breaks to downsize their homes

T

here is a growing campaign to build more home for older people Elderly people living in large homes may be offered tax incentives and grants to downsize. It's a measure being considered by Government ahead of the publication of the 'Housing For All' plan. The Housing For All plan is not finalised with a government spokesperson saying "nothing is set in stone" and "everything is still on the table" The plan will layout a roadmap for how to sort the housing crisis and one such measure being considered is encouraging elderly people in 3 and 4 bed homes to "rightsize". CEO of Alone Sean Monyihan says building homes for older people is the key to solving the housing crisis. 72-year-old Mick McCarthy moved

from a house to a one-bed apartment and is happier than ever. Research shows that 15 percent of older people would consider downsizing

if they could stay within their community. It's estimated that would free up 60 to 70 thousand larger units suitable for families.

The Law Society’s Justice Media Awards were announced recently with a local radio station scooping a major prize. The winner for broadcast journalism in the radio and podcast local category section is Niall Delaney, presenter of the North West Today Show. The award was in recognition of a piece that highlighted the barriers faced by same-sex couples and their fight to have them both officially recognised as parents in the eyes of the State. This was the announcement at the virtual awards ceremony. The North West Today piece featured

Geraldine Stone, Sarah McDevitt, and their legal representative, Annmarie Whelan, barrister. On the NWT Show, Sarah outlined their difficulties in registering their child, making them, in effect, single parents in the eyes of the law. President of the Law Society of Ireland James Cahill, said, “It is critically important to continue to recognise, reward and support excellence in legal journalism. Journalism that promotes a greater public understanding of the law, the legal system and specific legal issues is of immense value and this year’s

awards recognise great examples.” “Often at these awards, certain themes become apparent and outstanding cases are highlighted. This year, many of our entries focused on giving a voice to the victims of crime and letting them share their story in their own words. Planning lodged for new solar farm in Roscommon P lanning permission has been lodged for a new solar farm in Roscommon. The development would act as an extension to the solar farm plan already granted for Taduff, Creagh & Cuilglass in the county. Permission is being sought by TDC Community Solar Park Limited to construct solar arrays on ground mounted frames over a 60 hectare area. The plans also call for 13 transformer stations, security fencing and CCTV cameras. A separate previous permission was given the go ahead in July last year for the construction of 70 hectares of panels in the area, with the new application considered an extension of this development. Roscommon county planners are due to decide on the new application in August.

Leitrim food business owner worried over staff retention due to possible Delta variant delays

Some staff were hitting 28,000 steps during their working day due to outdoor dining. Restaurants are going to begin losing staff if the return of indoor dining is delayed due to the spread of the delta variant of Covid19. That's according to Leitrim restaurateur, Jo O'Brien, who says the work that goes into maintaining outdoor dining is not sustainable for the industry. The Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Health Minister have all indicated that it's too soon at this stage to provide clarity on the situation, with a decision on the next step in reopening delayed until next week. Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, the owner of Vito's Restaurant says staff members recorded having walked over 28,000 steps in one shift due to tables being set up outside the restaurant. McConalogue says society’s attitude to fur farming has ‘changed radically’

Agriculture Minister and Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue says society’s attitude toward the farming of animals for their fur and skin has changed radically. Minister McConalogue was speaking after the cabinet approved a Bill that will make it illegal for any new fur farms to be established. One of the farms currently operating is in Donegal. 14 EU member states have already banned the farming of mink and other wild animals.. The minister told the North West Today Show why moves are now being made here to ban fur farming. Minister McConalogue also outlined what happens now and when the law banning fur farming will eventually become into operation.

Rebuilding Lives after Brain Injury for 21 Years

Northwest Express July, 2021

Acquired Brain Injury Ireland marks two decades of world-class service Providing life-changing support for brain injury survivors and their families in Sligo

A

cquired Brain Injury Ireland (ABII) celebrated 21 years empowering survivors of brain injury to rebuild their lives. The organisation was set up in 2000 to meet a vital need to provide lifechanging, specialised neuro-rehabilitation for individuals in Ireland whose lives had been shattered by brain injury. This includes those acquiring brain injury from falls, road traffic accidents, concussion and stroke living in Sligo. From a single assisted living service providing a home-from-home for three brain injury survivors, ABII has since grown to serve 1,100 individuals nationally every year. The 21st birthday milestone is particularly significant in the year of publication of the Ombudsman’s ‘Wasted Lives’ report, which recently highlighted the inappropriate placement of young people in nursing homes. Chief Executive and Co-Founder of ABII Barbara O’Connell drove the organisation’s foundation after her brother, Peter Bradley, suffered two brain injuries as a result of two serious road traffic accidents before the age of 42. No longer able to live independently, and without access to any appropriate rehabilitation services, Peter was transferred from acute care and inappropriately placed in a nursing home. Commenting on the occasion of the 21st birthday, Barbara said: ‘Brain injury is a hidden phenomenon in our society and nobody ever thinks it will happen to them. But it happens to 52 people in this

country every day, often leaving them with a chronic and ongoing condition that can affect their lives and those of their family for months and years after the initial injury.

‘Too often people who acquire brain injuries are young and left in appropriate settings such as nursing homes, acute hospitals or at home where families are unable to cope.

The findings of the Ombudsman’s ‘Wasted Lives’ report have been at the core of our purpose from the very beginning: to prevent individuals with brain injury going into the

nursing home system, to take those misplaced there out, and to give them the specialist response they need to rebuild their lives. We still have a long way to go.’ The reality of the ‘Wasted Life’ laid out ahead of Peter was devastating for Barbara and her family. And so together, they opened the first ABII house in Dublin – a place where Peter and other brain injury survivors could be supported to live life to their full potential and regain as much independence as possible. ABII is now Ireland’s leading provider of clinically-led community rehabilitation for individuals with brain injury aged 18 to 65. In addition to operating 16 rehabilitation residences around Ireland, the organisation provides a broad range of in-home community, day and vocational rehabilitation programmes alongside family supports in every province in the country. This past 18 months, and in the wake of the pandemic, ABII has also extended its services and its reach by incorporating ‘telerehabilitation’ through the use of online and digital technologies. But with 19,000 new brain injuries acquired in Ireland every year, this is only the tip of the iceberg. ‘Wasted Lives’ has provided compelling evidence for and strengthened the case long-championed by ABII: that urgent State investment is required in specialised neuro-rehabilitation. This will be crucial to end the systemic and inappropriate confinement of young brain injury survivors in nursing homes where they are denied the right to rehabilitation and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Call for female engineers to apply for key roles at SL Controls

• Company has doubled number of female engineers since March • But still a low number of applications from women in engineering • Call being made on International Women in Engineering Day

S

L Controls, the specialist software integration firm, is looking for female engineers to join its team. In March, the company announced it would be creating 50 new highly-skilled jobs over the next 18 months to bring the total workforce to 140. Since then, SL Controls has hired three new female engineers to bring to five the total number of female engineers at the company. However, it remains difficult for all employers to find female engineers to fill positions. (see quotes and case studies of female engineers at end of release) In September, SL Controls will be launching a new initiative where its engineers will spend time in primary schools engaging with 5th class students about engineering and its real-world applications. Established in 2002, SL Controls is an international provider of equipment system integrated solutions to a range of world-leading brands across a number of industries including Medtech, Pharma, Healthcare and Technology. An Enterprise Ireland client, SL Controls has offices in Sligo, Dublin, Limerick, Galway and Florida and has customers – mainly multinationals – in Ireland, across mainland Europe and the US. Shauna Ryan, SL Controls’ HR Manager, says the company is making a concerted effort to hire female engineers but the number of women applying for roles such as Systems Engineers and Validation Engineers is still low. “There is not a huge volume of women applying for the roles and we would like to encourage more women to think of engineering as a career. We are actively trying to target and attract females to our roles but the effort to get more women into engineering needs to happen earlier – in our schools and at home. Very little has been done to explain to young people – especially young girls — how much engineering has evolved over the last 20 years. We want to get young people excited about, and interested in, engineering. “One of the missing links is that a huge proportion of young people are choosing their third-level courses and future careers without ever speaking to someone who works in the field. We are starting a new programme in September where SL

We hope this will encourage more students – both male and female – to take up STEM subjects in secondary school, and ultimately consider engineering as a career.” Keith Moran, SL Controls founder and CEO, says: “The education system is struggling to keep up to date with realworld advances, which have been

accelerated by Industry 4.0. New exciting career opportunities are being created in the equipment systems engineering (ESE) field by Industry 4.0 but we need to invest in educating our young people if Ireland is to capitalise on this unique opportunity. To be ready to capitalise on Industry 4.0, Ireland needs engineers who are not just trained in one discipline, but ones who are interdisciplinary or even antidisciplinary.”

Safe Routes to School Projects to Progress in 170 Schools Across The Country

1

70 schools have been notified that they have been selected for inclusion in the first round of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme to support walking and cycling infrastructure for primary and post-primary schools. The scheme was announced in March of this year, with 932 schools (representing almost one in four schools in the state) expressing interest. The schools selected were assessed against a range of criteria including school type, location and the school’s commitment to sustainable travel. Schools that have applied this year and who have not been included in the first round of funding will not be required to reapply as they will come into the programme on a rolling basis. There will be no additional call for schools to join the SRTS programme at this time. The programme is funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority (NTA) and is supported by the Department of Education. An Taisce’s Green-Schools is co-ordinating the programme, while funding will be made available to local authorities which will play a key part in delivering the infrastructure along access routes and at the school gate. The Safe Routes to School programme aims to create safer walking and cycling routes within communities, alleviate congestion at the school gates and increase the number of students who walk or cycle to school by providing walking and cycling facilities. The improvements to the school commute range from an upgraded footpath or new cycle lane to a complete reworking of the road outside a school’s entrance. Cycle and scooter parking will be provided to most schools that are part of the programme. Precise details of the works to be undertaken in and around the individual schools will be determined after a detailed assessment has been carried out by the relevant local authority. The process of engagement between the schools, NTA and the local authorities is already under way. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD said: “Walking, scooting and cycling to school fosters independence, and is a healthy way for our young people to get around as well as helping us all to cut emissions and air pollution. We want to ensure they can do this in a safe way, through providing additional facilities in and close to schools. This is the first phase of the Safe Routes to School Programme which I look forward to expanding in

the years ahead.” Anne Graham, CEO of the National Transport Authority said: “The project being announced today is a significant step in encouraging young people to use more sustainable modes of transport, particularly when going to school. We want to see more young people cycling, walking/scooting to school, but we understand that safety is a concern.” “In this first phase of ‘Safe Routes to School’, we will address this by providing better infrastructure for these young people. This year alone, work on projects will get under way in over 170 schools around the country.” “NTA along with Green-Schools and the local authorities, look forward to working with school communities at a local level to make journey safer than ever before. We want to make a real difference to schools, families, and the environment.” €15m has been allocated for projects included in Round One. The subsequent schools will be engaged with on a rolling basis in each local authority. This money will be provided from the €1.8 billion funding earmarked in the Programme for Government to support sustainable transport. Work on some individual projects may get under way over the summer, to be completed this year. Interventions that may require planning permission, will take longer to deliver, in some instances, a number of years. The delivery of this programme will also be supported by additional staff being recruited in local authorities, as announced by the Department of Transport in January 2021. SRTS Infrastructure Officers from GreenSchools will be liaising with all Round One schools over the coming weeks to ascertain the issues schools are facing at the school gate and on the journey to school. Green-Schools will also be working with all local authorities to progress the programme in each county, however the rollout of the programme is dependent upon the capacity of all parties. The delivery of this programme will also be supported by additional staff being recruited in local authorities, as announced by the Department of Transport in January 2021. Schools that have expressed an interest in that are not in round one will come into the programme on a rolling basis and at that stage SRTS Infrastructure Officers will commence work with these schools.

VOLVO XC40 PHEV - UNPLUG AND PLAY. Editorial by brEda Corrigan

V

olvo Cars brought a new safety standard to the small premium SUV segment with the launch of the new Volvo XC40 in 2018. being the first car to be built on Volvo’s new Compact Modular architecture (CMa) platform, the Volvo XC40 is one of the safest cars in its segment thanks to its inheritance of safety and support technologies from the brand’s S90/V90 and XC60 models.

‘Cognitive Load’ Reduction; Modern city life presents complex challenges for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. this is why the new Volvo XC40 was designed to reduce driver distraction and the so-called ‘cognitive load’ on the driver. With safety and driver assistance systems actively identifying and mitigating potential conflicts, the driving becomes more relaxed and enjoyable. the Volvo XC40 successfully blends comfort and cruising refinement, allowing the occupants to enjoy the trendy, minimalist cabin and the wonderful infotainment system.

Youthful Character; based on looks alone, the Volvo XC40 is noticeably more youthful than its larger siblings – the XC60 and XC90. ian Kettle – the designer of the XC40 - said that the inspiration for the car’s styling came from small robots that he saw in science-fiction movies. this resulted in the application of simple, clean, resolved lines - and an appearance that manages to look chunky and cute at the same time. it’s helped by a further evolution of Volvo’s ‘thor’s Hammer’ headlight motif at the front end. there’s more scope for personalisation than on the XC60 and XC90 too, thanks to contrasting roof colours on some versions

(black or white, depending on the trim level).

Petrol or PHEV; the Volvo XC40 was initially available with a choice of petrol or diesel engines, but the option of a diesel unit has been eliminated in favour of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, referred to as a ‘recharge Plug-in Hybrid’. trim options consist of Momentum (petrol only), r-design & r-design Pro (petrol or PHEV) and inscription & inscription Pro (petrol or PHEV), with front-wheel-drive standard across the range. Manual or automatic transmissions are

available in the petrol-powered models, with the recharge model coming with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Standard equipment across the entire range includes alloy wheels, lEd headlights with ‘thor Hammer’ lEd daytime driving lights, a 12.3inch active tFt Crystal drivers information display, rear Park assist, cruise control with speed limiter, Hill Start assist, Hill decent Control, tyre pressure monitoring system, heated front seats, auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors, alarm system, multiple airbags, road-sign information system, driver alert Control with

lane Keeping aid and many other safety, security and comfort features.

Test Car; My test car was a new Volvo XC40 recharge PHEV inscription Pro finished in Pebble grey metallic paint with contrasting arianne leather blonde & Charcoal seating. the luxuriously-appointed inscription Pro specification is based on the Momentum specification but also includes key features, such as a poweradjustable drivers seat with memory function (also includes memory for exterior mirrors), silver front & rear skid plates, poweroperated tailgate, heated front seats, heated windscreen & headlight cleaning system, heated washer nozzles, active bending headlights, front lEd fog lights with cornering function, front & rear park assist with a rear camera, and chrome window trim for a truly distinctive look. the 1.5-litre 3cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine works in conjunction with an electric motor (which is powered by a 10.7kWh lithium-ion battery) to produce 262PS (258bhp) and a hefty 425nm of torque. as a result, a 0100km/h sprint can be completed in just 7.3-seconds, while an electric-only range of up to 45kms is available from a full battery. Charging the battery from empty to 100% in the XC40 recharge can be performed in around 6 hours from a standard three-pin plug, while connecting a type 2 cable to a wall box will perform the same task in

around 2.5 hours. Volvo claim fuel consumption as low as 2.1-l/100km on a combined driving cycle (when used within appropriate battery charging recommendations), while an emission figure of 47g/km leads to annual road tax of just €170.

Verdict; during my time with the new XC40 recharge PHEV, i found it to be very sure-footed on a variety of road surfaces, while overall driving dynamics were excellent. the car handles extremely well, steers precisely and feels great from behind the multi-function steering wheel. Strong performance from the hybrid powertrain, along with impressive levels of refinement and composure ensure that every journey in the XC40 recharge is pleasurable. With demand for premium SUV’s at an all-time high across the world, it looks like Volvo’s timing in launching the wonderful XC40 recharge PHEV is absolutely perfect - much like the XC40 itself.

Pricing; Pricing for the new Volvo XC40 recharge PHEV range starts at €47,772 (inclusive of a €5,000 SEai grant for private customers – subject to terms & conditions), while the XC40 in petrol engine guise is priced from €38,297. With the new XC40 having won the coveted European Car of the year award for 2018, and the irish Car of the year award for 2019, it is testament to just how good the Volvo XC40 is.

A-CLASS SALOON - SPACIOUS ELEGANCE EDITORIAL BY BREDA CORRIGAN

An aerodynamically-efficient, svelte design enables the all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class Saloon to qualify as ‘a car with less drag than any other production vehicle currently on sale’. Mercedes-Benz engineers and designers spent countless hours optimising the latest A-Class in the wind tunnel, resulting in outstanding efficiency, low emissions, and terrific refinement.

Sumptuous Interior The interior of the new A-Class saloon is virtually identical to that found in its hatchback sibling. Every model has digital dials and a pair of wide central, highresolution, touchscreens as standard – behind which is stateof-the-art technology. The screens are super-easy to operate using the steering wheel, touchpad or touchscreen. The latter represents a world-first that is definitely worthy of praise. Amazingly, the software used is even more advanced than that found in Mercedes-Benz’s flagship car, the S-Class. The cabin of the new AClass consists of a combination of high quality aluminium, plastics, wood and leather, which infuses the car with an air of luxury befitting of the Mercedes-Benz brand. In fact, the cabin is more in line with what you would expect to find in a luxury saloon than in a family car, and it helps to lift the overall impression above that given by premium-badged rivals. Trim & Engine Options There are three generously-

equipped trim levels in the new AClass Saloon – entry-level Style, mid-spec Progressive, and rangetopping AMG Line. Engine options consist of a 1.3-litre (1,332cc) petrol unit (badged A200), or a 1.5-litre (1,461cc) diesel (badged A180d), while the only transmission available, with both engines, is a slick-shifting sevenspeed automatic which is easily controlled by way of a steering wheel-mounted stalk.

Test Car My test car was a new MercedesBenz A180d Saloon AMG Line, and was finished in stylish Mountain Grey metallic paintwork. Courtesy of a 1461cc turbo-diesel engine with 116bhp and 260Nm of torque, the 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 10.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 206km/h (where permitted). Fuel consumption as low as 4.1l/100km is possible on a combined driving cycle, while annual road tax is just €190. Standard AMG Line specification includes 18” AMG 5 x twin-spoke light alloy wheels, 3spoke multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather with flattened bottom section, AMG body-styling consisting of an AMG front apron with front splitter in chrome, AMG side sill panels, AMG rear apron with chrome trim and visible exhaust tailpipes, AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, diamond radiator grille with chrome pins and single louvre, ‘Direct Steer’ system, double cup holder,

’DYNAMIC SELECT’, folding armrest, front brake calipers with Mercedes-Benz logo, heated front seats, LED high performance headlamps, ‘Light & Sight’ package, lowered comfort suspension, MBUX multimedia system, split-folding rear seats, reversing camera, black fabric roof

liner, sports seats, ‘THERMOTRONIC’ automatic climate control and many other luxury, convenience, and safety features. Optional extras fitted to my test car consisted of an ‘Advantage Package’ (Parking Package, Mirror Package, Satellite Navigation with a 10.25-inch display) and ‘a Night Package’ priced at €2,762 and €569 respectively, while metallic paint is an €888 cost option.

On The Road The sports seats in the AMG Line models are designed to hold you in place better through corners and have integrated head restraints for a genuine sporty look. For supreme driving pleasure, the driver seat and steering wheel offer multiple adjustment options, so getting comfortable behind the wheel is never an issue. The standard torsion-beam rear suspension, and MacPherson strut front suspension in my test car provides a wellbalanced and fluid feel on an open road, while overall ride comfort is terrific. Accurate, and precise steering ensures that the car responds directly to driver inputs, while a strong brake-pedal feel further adds to driver confidence. The A-Class Saloon is a very safe car to drive – automatic emergency braking comes as standard and it can mitigate, or avoid entirely, front-end collisions with other cars, pedestrians or cyclists. It will even brake the car if it’s bumped from behind to try

and avoid you hitting the car in front. Independent crash-test body Euro NCAP awarded the A-Class hatchback the full five stars when it was tested in 2018, so the nearidentical saloon can be regarded as being just as safe. The car is fitted with an array of safety systems, both active (to help prevent a crash) and passive, (protecting occupants should the worst happen). Terrific Load Capacity The A-Class saloon is 130mm longer than its new, fourthgeneration A-Class hatchback sibling - with which it shares it wheelbase – and that extra space enables a boot capacity of 420litres, which is up 45-litres on the hatchback. A relatively low load lip makes it easy to load heavy items, and for even greater load capacity, the rear seats split and fold in a 40/20/40 configuration.

Verdict & Pricing Overall, the all-new MercedesBenz A-Class Saloon is a very likable car in every respect – from its favourable three-box proportions with distinctly styled tail-lamps, to its luxurious cabin, efficient engines, refined road manners, and fantastic infotainment system. The car’s clever and attractive interior mirrors its striking exterior design, and is a car that can wear the Mercedes-Benz badge with pride. Ex-works pricing for the new AClass Saloon starts at just €34,220, and is on sale now.

Connacht LGFA 2020 Finals Northwest Express July, 2021

A

fter a long wait the day finally arrived for the finals of the 2020 Connacht Ladies Football Association which were held on Saturday 19th in Markievicz park in Sligo. The committee of both the Connacht LGFA and the team at Markievicz park were to be complimented on a brilliant showcase for the ladies game in Connacht. Sligo teams featured in the three finals as St. Nathy’s contested the Senior, Geevagh, the Intermediate with Eoghan Rua contending for honours in the Junior Final. Micheál Naughton, President of the LGFA, was present and commented that “ girls want to be out playing and that’s what today is all about, girls getting out and playing” In conversation with

15

Angelina Nugent who was hosting the Connacht LGFA stream, sponsored by Solus, he commented on the profile of the ladies game today “ the standard is excellent and it’s what it’s all about, these girls are putting in the same effort as the men and now they’re getting the reward for it, ladies football is on the up and when we get the crowds back it will only get better” St Nathy’s were held scoreless until the opening minutes of the second half which saw their opponents, Galway side Kilkerrin/Clonberne, leave with the spoils as their brilliant display left very little room for Nathy’s to operate. On a final scoreline of 2-26 to 0-02 Kilkerrin Clonberne took the Senior title back to Galway. The Intermediate final between Geevagh and Glencar /

Sinéad Naughton being tracked by Naomh Mhuire’s Jenny Linnane as Fiona Feeney, Eoghan Rua, keeps an eye on both of them.

Jemma Brehony, Geevagh, chases Rebecca Rooney of Glencar/Manorhamilton.

Manorhamilton ended 2-08 to 3-15 with the efforts of the Leitrim side proving too much for a brave Geevagh side. The Leitrim Intermediate Champions were relentless in their pursuit of the Connacht Intermediate title. Eoghan Rua from West Sligo took on another Galway side but came out on top with a score of 6-13 to Naomh Mhuire’s 3-12. Eoghan Rua did their best to halt any charge that the Galway side attempted. With goals coming from Louise Lindsay (1-04), Rachel O’Brien (101) and two each from Sophie Barrins (2-0) and Leah Duffy(2-03), they dominated the play throughout the contest. Sharing Captain Duties all year were Orna O’Dowd and Joanne McDonnell with the Connacht Ladies Junior Cup.

HigH Blood Pressure: All You Need To KNow H igh blood pressure, also referred to as hypertension or HBP, is a leading disease among people around the world. In fact, approximately 32% of people in America suffer from high blood pressure. Simply put, high blood pressure is when the blood coursing through your blood vessels constantly exerts a high force on the walls of the blood vessels. Over an extended period, high blood pressure can damage your blood vessels and increase the risks of quite a few physical issues, some of which can prove to be fatal. In this post, let’s find out the causes, symptoms, dangers, and treatments of high blood pressure. Causes of HBP To understand the causes, let’s go back a little bit. The heart, as we know, pumps blood with ample amounts of oxygen around our body, and the returning low-oxygen blood is sent to the lungs by the heart to replenish its oxygen content. The pumping of the blood by the heart’s muscles causes the pressure. HBP means there’s too much force on the walls of the blood vessels at all times. However, there are two types of HBP: Essential HBP: There is an established cause of this type of hypertension. Secondary HBP: This means that there is a different health problem that is causing hypertension. As stated, secondary HBP is caused by other physical problems; As for essential HBP, there are some common traits that can cause hypertension. Let’s take a quick look at those: Age – the higher the age, the more

at risk you are of getting HBP History of hypertension in the family, especially ancestors Having diabetes increases the risk of HBP Some ethnicities are more prone to hypertension like South Asian and Afro-Caribbean Having a high-fat diet regularly and/or having excess salt in your meals Taking a lot of mental stress and worrying a lot Being overweight Not exercising enough Smoking and/or too much alcohol consumption As we can see, there are some causes that we don’t have any control over like age, race, and family history, but there are other factors that are associated with our lifestyle that we can change to decrease the risk. We’ll discuss this further in the treatment section. Symptoms of HBP Many people say that there are various symptoms of high blood pressure. While there are some symptoms of course, for the most part, hypertension is symptomless, and therefore called the “silent killer” in the medical world. In fact, some people might not even see these symptoms until many years later when their hypertension has reached a severe level. On the severe side, some of the symptoms of HBP are: Headaches Breathlessness Flushing and/or dizziness Pain in the chest Bleeding from the nose Eyesight problems Blood passing with urine These symptoms are as severe as they sound, and if you face any of

these symptoms, you should urgently consult a doctor. However, since HBP is often symptomless, it’s a good idea to monitor your blood pressure routinely. Whenever you visit a doctor, ask them to check your blood pressure. Alternately, you can purchase a sphygmomanometer and keep tabs on your blood pressure at home. Dangers of HBP We’ve already learned that high blood pressure is dangerous. But how dangerous? What can HBP lead to? Let’s find out.

#1. Damaged Arteries and Heart Due to the heavy pressure exerted on the walls of the blood vessels, some of your arteries can be damaged. Sometimes, the fat content of your diet is deposited directly in the arteries, thus narrowing them and not allowing enough blood to flow to all parts of your body. This can lead to heart failure or heart attack over time alongside other coronary complications. Also, an aneurysm ruptures in the weakened artery causing internal bleeding may occur, which can often be fatal.

#2. Dangers to the Brain Your brain needs a fresh supply of oxygen to function properly. With high blood pressure, some blood vessels supplying that oxygen to the brain can be reduced. As a result, with limited oxygen supply, a stroke might occur in your brain, which can be life-threatening. Other than that, HBP can cause dementia and even some cognitive problems.

#3. Kidneys Can Be Affected Hypertension can damage blood vessels leading in and out of the kidneys. As a result, your kidneys can be at risk of damage. Other than fatal kidney failure, other severe conditions like kidney scarring and aneurysms might occur due to HBP. #4. Impaired Vision HBP can damage the blood vessels that are connected to your eyes’ retina, causing various nerve damage and other eyesight issues. As a result, you might have impaired vision or even partial or full blindness. #5. Risks of Sexual Dysfunction As a result of high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction may occur in men. For women, HBP can reduce the amount of blood reaching the nerve ending of the vagina, thus

reducing sexual desire or ability.

Treatment of HBP Firstly, if you face any of the symptoms we’ve discussed, it means your hypertension is at a severe level. In such cases, you should immediately contact one of the urgent care centers in your area. Other than that, if you get diagnosed with high blood pressure, you should consult a doctor to prescribe you the necessary medication based on your physical condition and unique needs. As we had mentioned previously, high blood pressure is often caused by our lifestyle. Therefore, changing your lifestyle if you get diagnosed with hypertension is also important. Some tips to a healthy lifestyle for hypertensive patients are: Eat less fatty food or those rich in cholesterol Refrain from consuming excess salt Quit smoking Lower the amount of alcohol you consume Exercise on a regular basis, or get more physical activity than before And very importantly, get enough sleep and try not to take much mental stress These would help you live a healthier lifestyle, thus battle high blood pressure.

Final Thoughts High blood pressure, the silent killer, may not have immediate symptoms or effects, but in the long run, it can be fatal. If you have any of the symptoms or have been diagnosed with hypertension, you should consult a doctor and start your treatment immediately, alongside following the tips above. If you haven’t been diagnosed, you should still try to follow the tips as they can help prevent high blood pressure. You should also keep routine tabs on your blood pressure levels. Just because HBP is usually symptomless, you shouldn’t be reluctant to prevent it. By following the tips and having good knowledge about high blood pressure, you can live a long and healthy life.

10 DIFFERENT DRINKS TO BANISH BELLY BLOAT A bloated belly can sabotage your plans and mood like no other. What do you do when you’re supposed to be somewhere, in something (you know, pants that button, your little black dress, or perhaps even a bathing suit), and suddenly your stomach looks and feels like you swallowed a basketball? How do you banish bloat in its tracks when you’ve got a bloat emergency? Sip Lemon Water If you only have a few hours before an event, Karena and Katrina rec-

ommend drinking some water with fresh lemon and a little cayenne pepper for a de-bloating tonic.

Spice It Up On that note, you might be bloated because of indigestion or gastrointestinal distress. Cayenne pepper stimulates digestion, eases gas, and can relieve pressure and cramping. It’s basically a bloated belly’s most formidable match when you’re in a bind, so toss a teaspoon into your drink of choice (more options below).

Take Some Turmeric Like cayenne pepper, turmeric is a detoxifying spice. The girls buy it in powder form, but you can also get drops of turmeric and add a teaspoon (in either form) to water, tea, juice, or a smoothie before an event.

Drink Coconut Water In addition to water with lemon and cayenne pepper, sip coconut water, which helps to de-bloat. “You really want to stay hydrated to flush out any extra sodium,” so just keep sipping the right fluids, they say.

Make Ginger Your Friend “Ginger is great for de-bloating, whether you make ginger tea or have fresh juice with ginger or a smoothie in which you include ginger,” the girls say. “We love fresh turmeric, ginger, and lemon for making a juice; that’s our favorite. We like taking shots of ginger too. If you have a juicer you can juice a bunch of ginger and have it on hand, and either take a shot of it or pour it into your smoothies and mix it up. We make huge batches of it to have on hand. If you don’t have a juicer, you can slice up little bits of ginger—it’s hard to grind up in a smoothie, so it’s almost like you have to mince it, make it really small, then throw it in the blender,” they say. A further benefit, they explain, is relief from the menstrual cramps that cause bloating. Drink Peppermint Tea If you prefer the taste or want

Take Some Turmeric

Westport Foot Clinic

something in addition to water and coconut water, “teas like peppermint tea or ginger tea will alleviate bloat,” they say.

Eat Asparagus “There are foods like asparagus that are a natural diuretic. So if it is a little further ahead of time (a few hours versus just one, for example), you can eat some asparagus to help you lose some bloat,” they say. Just make sure to not sprinkle any salt on it! Sodium causes bloat, so lay off the shaker before an event.

Eat Spinach Spinach also helps lessen belly bloat by pushing fiber through your digestive tract. Your best bet for reaping its de-bloating benefits is to toss some spinach into a slimming smoothie along with ginger, turmeric, and coconut water. Sweat It Out “If you do have an hour before the event, there’s nothing like a little sweat session for getting rid of bloat,” they say. Even just sweating a little bit will help de-bloat you.”

“I was fortunate to be passing a chemist shop in my home town and decided to make an appointment with the audiologist. I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo
