N May we celebrate with Bealtaine, but it is also a timely reminder of the plight of a growing number of older people in our communities, particularly in rural, isolated areas. Many studies, particularly one carried out by ALONE in 2016, have revealed that being alone is the greatest fear of our increasingly elderly population and isolation in itself can have devastating health effects. One-in-three over 65s live on their own, a number that’s only going to continue to climb, and a huge proportion of them feelisolated or lonely. There are multiple reasons feeding into the rise of loneliness. Family sizes are smaller, more couples are separating or divorcing, increased emigration, changes in the composition of communities and housing. We’re living longer but with that comes age-related issues such as decreased mobility. Exacerbating the problem, of course, is the lack of suitable housing stock - there’s an urgent need for an option for elderly people that falls between independent living and residential care - and there’s also a stigma that dogs loneliness and prevents people asking for help. Allied to this, also, is the growing number of elderly being attacked and robbed in their homes. We spoke to Ballina Lion, Pat O’Brien, who organises social events, day-trips and some appropriate physical activity for older people. He confirmed that loneliness was the dominant problem for lots of those people. After retirement everything changes. Social activity, the chance to meet new people, a place to meet, talk, enrol in a class – it’s all essential in the post-work scenario. The problem is multiplied when people get older and infirm. There is no systematic approach to catering for the needs of a growing number of elderly people. Dr. Kevin McCarroll from Mercer’s Institute for Successful Aging, says: “I’ve had patients where loneliness has been the major factor in their decision to go into a nursing home”. Amazement as Achill beach reappears after 33 years

A

s the north-west basked in glorious sunshine and sweltering heat last week Achill islanders received a welcome boost . . . literally out of the blue. A lovely, idyllic beach in Dooagh, where locals and visitors had enjoyed bathing, swimming and walking back in the 1980s, and disappeared practically overnight, suddenly re-appeared and should provide a major kick-start to the tourist season on the beautiful Mayo island The village of Dooagh was devastated when their beach was wiped out in storms in 1984. Several hotels and guest houses thrived in the area as tourists flocked to the 300 metre beach.. After a storm, it dried up and all that remained were a few rock pools. Incredibly freak tides last month swept in hundreds of thousands of tons of sand to the area and the beach reappeared again almost overnight. Now tourism chiefs in the area are hoping that the beach will be able to get blue flag status next year and become a tourist attraction once more. Sean Molloy, manager of Achill Island Tourism , said: "I’ve had lovely messages from people saying they can’t believe the beach, which holds so many beautiful memories for them in the past, is back again" Maybe it just goes to prove that a thing of such natural beauty can never be really extinguished.

Alone and isolated - plight of the elderly Continued from the front page This, in itself, is a interesting fact, in the light of a recent Report, “The Right to Remain” launched by Active Retirement Ireland, and featured in the May issue of Mature Living, which revealed that only 1% of those interviewed wished to age in a nursing home or long-term care facility – despite current legislation, which provides only for nursing home care via the Fair Deal. The ARI Report focussed on the

outdated approach towards later-life care in Ireland and the need for a viable homecare system that will not only lead to a healthier, happier old population, but also save the Irish government millions. It also revealed, however, that one in three older people believe they will not be supported to age at home or in the community. Access to services, financial stability, safety and security and availability of transport also featured in the Report. As one respondent said: “Unless you live in a city or large town access to services is

very patchy. If you can’t drive, or have someone who can drive you, it is impossible to get to appointments or social gatherings.” Many are left alone because their families had to leave Ireland in search of work. What is patently obvious is that the current Irish model of care does not cater for the 99% of people who would prefer to age as part of a socially inclusive community. Too many people who have served this country well are now left in fear, isolation and alone.

SciFest 2017 - ‘A Close Shave’ for Ballina’s Aaron A shaving device for people with limited hand movement has earned a Mayo student the top prize at this year’s SciFest@ITSligo. 18-year-old Aaron Hannon, who’s a Leaving Certificate student at St Muredach’s College in Ballina, won the SciFest ‘Best Project’ award at IT Sligo for his ‘EnableArm’ project and will now go on to represent the region at the All-Ireland SciFest final in November this year. “I got the idea from my grandfather who got a stroke in late 2003. Before he passed away, for the rest of his life , his left arm was paralysed and his right arm suffered from hand weakness. So, I wanted to create something that could help people in his situation. “I designed all the parts of the EnableArm device using Computer-Aid design, and 3D printed them.” The EnableArm device has been tested on a human face and Aaron is currently applying for a patent. Congratulating Aaron on his success, SciFest co-ordinator at IT Sligo, Bill Crowe, said: “As always, the projects entered by the students in SciFest are impressive, engaging and thought-provoking.

Secondary school students from across the region are demonstrating their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths, which is clearly evident from the high standard of research that has gone into the entries this year. SciFest is an all-inclusive, all-island science initiative which fosters active, collaborative and inquiry-based learning among second-level students. SciFest is funded primarily by Science Foundation Ireland, Boston Scientific, Intel and Abbott. This year’s regional event at IT Sligo attracted a record 361 students from counties Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Roscommon. Commenting on the SciFest@ITSligo fair, Sheila Porter, SciFest CEO said: “This year we are celebrating 10 years of SciFest science fairs. In that time, the number of students participating has increased fivefold and they have produced an amazing range of subjects across the STEM disciplines. SciFest gives students an excellent opportunity to develop their interest in STEM and inquiry-based approaches to learning, while developing their creative and problem-solving skills and learning to work in a team.”

he Minister of State for Region al Economic Development, Mr. Michael Ring, TD, was a welcome visitor to Crossmolina, Co. Mayo, last week when he officially

opened a new facility which will enhance the health and wellbeing of the local community. The new MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area), opened by the Minister of State on Friday,

24th April, at Abbeytown, can accommodate games such as soccer, Gaelic football and basketball. It was, indeed, largely due to the CLAR programme which Mr. Ring launched in October

last that the new development was funded. The programme itself is aimed at small-scale infrastructural projects in disadvantaged rural areas that have experienced significant levels of depopulation . The value of the entire project was in excess of €126,000, over €100,000 of which came from CLAR and the balance from Mayo County Council. Mr. Ring said “ . . the facility will provide the people of Crossmolina and its surrounding communities with a state-of-the-art amenity for all members of the community ..” The thanked those who had worked to deliver the new MUGA, including Peter Gill and Denis Connor Mayo Co. Council who had project-managed the development, the staff and elected members of Mayo Co. Council, the residents of Abbeytown and Crossmolina Community Council for their combined efforts to make a project a reality. Mr. Ring’s sentiments were echoed by other officials present, including local councillor Michael Loftus, Cathaoirleach of the Ballina Municipal District, who praised all those involved in planning and co-ordinating the event.

Regional Innovation Showcase At IT Sligo Enterprise Ireland Chief Executive Julie Sinnamon (pictured) was guest speaker at a major Regional Innovation Showcase at IT Sligo this Friday, attended by business

owners, startups and key support and development agencies. In a keynote address to more than 200 invited guests, Ms. Sinnamon underlined Enterprise Ireland’s commitment to regional entrepreneurship and development. She will also urged businesses in the North West and other regions not to wait until Brexit officially happens but to prepare for it now. Speaking ahead of the event, Ms. Sinnamon said: “Fostering entrepreneurship and supporting regional enterprise is a priority for Enterprise Ireland, and the companies that have successfully completed the New Frontiers programme will play an important part in accelerating the development of sustainable new business in the region. “However, we live in uncertain times and ESTABLISHED 1991

Brexit will prove a challenge for many regional enterprises. Despite the uncertainty, the UK continues to be Ireland’s main trading partner and it is for that reason that innovation is at the heart of Enterprise Ireland’s strategy, helping businesses to secure and maintain competitive advantage. “We are encouraging SMEs to take the first step of preparation for Brexit by conducting their own assessment of areas of potential risk and opportunity and to develop a plan of action in response.” “I want to congratulate all the businesses on completion of the programme and for the great success they have achieved to date, progressing their business concepts to investable business with employment and growth potential for the North West region in the future”, Ms Sinnamon concluded.

funding from the Society and a further 6 groups will receive support. The Society has awarded over €130,000 to youth groups and organisations through X-HALE to create smoking related community awareness film projects since the initiative started over seven years ago.

Illegal Dumping near Boyle upsets volunteers LOCAL volunteers in the scenie village of Keadue, near Boyle were shocked recently to discover illegal dumpting on a large scale near the village. The local volunteers discovered the refuse during a local clean-up last week as part of An Taisce’s ‘Spring

Clean’, at the townland of Litra, approximately a mile from Keadue village, on the main Boyle road. Forty animal feed bags, containing black silage wrapping, were discovered. Other items dumped included a sofa, electrical goods, household rubbish, plastic

bottles and cans. All of the materials are recyclable. The Environmental section of Roscommon County Council and the Gardai were notified of the incidence with the Council removing the offending waste. Padraig Noone, Secretary of the Keadue Tidy Towns Committee and well-known community activist, said he and his Committee have reported the incident to both Roscommon County Council and local Gardai in Boyle. “There’s a forest where the bags were dumped; about 40 bags were discovered and thrown over a ditch. You would find litter thrown out of cars sometimes but never something like this. This is the first time we’ve discovered dumping on a scale like this. “We don’t know the source of the dumping. What is annoying is that the material

dumped (plastic silage wrap) can be stored and recycled as seats and plastic hill-walking posts. I don’t know why people can’t dispose of their waste properly, besides there are regular farm plastic collections at local Marts”, said Mr. Noone. The picturesque North Roscommon village has twice won the All-Ireland Tidy Towns competition in 1993 and 2003 and has an unenviable reputation as one of the country’s tidiest locations, also competing in the prestigious ‘Entente Floriale’ European Tidy Towns competition. Despite this setback, the work of the hard-working Tidy Towns team continues in Keadue: “we hope the Council put up signs altering people not to dump. Our clean-up’s are ongoing every single day. We’re hoping the dumping is a once-off and it won’t happen again.

Ireland’s national Marian Shrine, Knock, Claremorris, Co. Mayo, f12 Y226, Ireland Tel: (094) 93 88100 • info@knock-shrine.ie • www.knockshrine.ie

Pilgrimage Season begins at Knock beautiful candlelit processions each night, attended by thousands. The theme for this year’s Novena is ‘Living Life to Full’ and will include a number of guest speakers, daily workshops and plenty of opportunity for interaction and discussion.

Family & Youth Events

S

unday 30th April marks the beginning of the pilgrimage season at Knock Shrine. It is predicted to be another busy year as pilgrims, visiting tour groups and passers-by will descend on the world-famous Shrine, which continues to attract over a million visitors each year. In addition to the programme of religious ceremonies, the Shrine continues to offer a great wealth of attractions for visitors, including the award-wining Knock Museum, daily faith events and public ceremonies, beautiful walkways, cultural history, youth events and summer camps. Visitors can also stop for a coffee or enjoy a meal together at Café Le Chéile which overlooks the Basilica and beautiful gardens. Organised pilgrimages will place every weekend throughout the season in addition to Mini-Vigils on the first Friday of each month as well as a continuation of daily Guided Prayer sessions, Stations of the Cross, Anointing of the Sick and Exposition. Healing and Reconciliation are often an important part of the pilgrimage journey with many taking the opportunity to attend confessions which are available daily. In addition to the busy programme of ceremonies, there will be a number of events including the ‘Resting in the Arms of God’ day retreat with Deirdre Ní Chinnéide, which will take place on Saturday 6th May.

New York Pilgrimage

The highlight of this year’s pilgrimage season will be the historic trip to New York for the reinterment of the remains of John Curry, one of the last surviving witnesses to the Apparition at Knock. The pilgrimage will depart on Monday 8th May from Ireland West

Airport with Aer Lingus private charter direct to JFK. Requiem Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Dolan in Old St Patrick’s Cathedral on May 13th. This is a historic and symbolic pilgrimage as it will give recognition to John Curry while also being the first pilgrimage from Knock to the States. Knock Shrine has welcomed pilgrimages from the Archdiocese of New York in 2015, led by Cardinal Dolan and Boston last year which was led by Cardinal O’Malley. Those travelling on the pilgrimage will have the opportunity to be a part of a very memorable and special trip, including a Mass of thanks in St Patrick’s New Cathedral the day after the Requiem Mass.

‘Largest Mosaic in Europe’ continues to attract crowds

The Apparition Mosaic in the Basilica at Knock continues to attract enormous interest from all who visit the Shrine. The enormous artwork, which measures 14mx14m is one of the largest single flat pieces of religious mosaic of its kind in Europe, if not the world. The mosaic is made predominantly from Venetian glass smalti and there are approximately 1.5 million individual pieces in the complete work. It was hand-crafted in Spillembergo, Italy by skilled mosaic artisans. It is a magnificent representation of the Apparition scene of 1879 as described by the fifteen witnesses.

National Novena

As many as 150,000 people descend on Knock Shrine over nine days from August 14th to 23rd for the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock. There are daily ceremonies and talks on various social and religious topics and

The ‘HUB – Hear, Understand, Believe’ is a summer programme for young people visiting Knock Shrine and includes daily programmes, a kids club, drop-in centre and summer camps. It is a bright, welcome and happy space for young people to spend time and facilitates parents who want to attend Mass or have time alone to pray. The HUB also run summer camps and volunteer programmes throughout the year. Throughout the year, the Family Centre offers a great range of familyfriendly events to enrich, assist and encourage families to live contentedly and well in a world that is always challenging and often difficult. The Family Focus Week takes place in July and includes a practical and varied programme of workshop and talk to support families. A visit to the award-winning Knock Museum (open daily) is a must for anyone visiting the Shrine as it tells the amazing story of Knock from a social, political and religious perspective. Visitors can take time to discover the amazing collection of artefacts as well as the quaint thatched cottage which continues to be very popular with children. Visitors can also read the testimonies of the fifteen official witnesses to the Apparition as well as the ‘Diary of Cures’ penned by Archdeacon Cavanagh. Audio Guides are available in seven languages and the Museum is open daily. Visitors with limited mobility can avail of the complimentary shuttle service which is operative everyday throughout the summer months. Those who are unable to come to Knock in person can watch the 12 noon and 3pm ceremonies live from the Basilica at www.knockshrine.ie/watch , place a petition or light a candle online for a loved one. Knock Shrine Friends association cards are also available online and can be sent anywhere in the world. Further information on Mass times, ceremonies and upcoming events as well as all of the other services at the Shrine can be found at www.knockshrine.ie

What Pilgrims said… “Sacred space” I have visited Knock Shrine on several occassions. My most recent visit was January 2017. It is a perfect place to visit for some time out from the mad world around us. Peace and tranquillity prevails within the grounds. A perfect spot to meditate and pray. I found the time I spent in the Apparition church in the quite of the evening very special. “An Experience of Calm & Peace, A Refreshing Escape From Today’s World” An entire day could easily be spent at this national shrine! The Basilica alone is beautiful beyond words...regardless of which side of the amazing altar you are on. The grounds are impeccable and display flowers with brilliant colour. “Outstanding” Totally amazing, beautiful and very peaceful it’s surroundings where

out off this world and feeling surrounding this Shrine was amazing. “A place of peace and reconciliation” I was born about 6 miles away and visited this July for a very beautiful ceremony of rededication of the Basilica - I felt very proud of the Basilica and Shrine grounds and facilities that have had recent renovations - it’s all just great. It has one of the largest mosaics I’ve ever seen above the main entrance of the Basilica, which shows the apparition of the Blessed Mother with St. Joseph, St. John and the lamb, in August 1879. 15 witnesses saw the apparition and gave sworn testimonies to a commission of inquiry. That and the many miraculous cures there over the years gives Knock status as one of the world’s leading pilgrimage places. You can’t help but feel at peace there whatever your religion or beliefs.

Mayo IFA reps get Brexit briefing Taoiseach also updated on sector’s priorities

Mayo IFA representatives attending the recent Brexit Event at Goffs, Co. Kildare: Left to right: Eoghan Blehein, Kilfian-Moygownagh; Brendan Golden, Chairman, IFA Livestock Committee; Tommy Bourke, Ballycastle IFA, and Tommy Robinson, Ardagh/Ballina IFA.

I

FA members from Mayo travelled to Goffs (Kildare) recently to a special conference to get the latest update on the Brexit position and its likely affect on farmers in the west. The meeting was also attended by European Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan. Almost simultaneously, IFA and representatives from the Agri-food industry met the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, to put forward the main issues confronting the sector ahead of the crucial EU summit on the following Saturday. Representatives from Food Drink Ireland, Meat Industry Ireland and the Irish Dairy Industry Association joined IFA President Joe Healy in making a strong case for the measures needed by the sector. According to Joe Healy: “Brexit has the potential to have a devastating impact on farming and food. It’s our largest indigenous sector and the UK is our most important market. Our message to the Taoiseach

was clear: the sector’s issues have to be at the forefront of what is agreed by the EU leaders next weekend”. Mr Philip Carroll, Chairman of MII, said that “the food industry delegation highlighted the critical importance of business certainty through the negotiation process to a new trading relationship with the UK and therefore the absolute need for a transition period. He also outlined the need for the Government to act immediately on a series of short term measures to ensure that Irish food exports maintain their market share in the UK while negotiations are ongoing.” The delegation identified the key priorities for the sector in relation to the EU negotiating mandate for the Brexit negotiations. These were, primarily, the future EU-UK trading relationship and maintenance of access to and the value of the UK Market.

Short & medium term measures The delegation put forward a number of short and medium term measures to support the agri-food sector: The relaxation of state aids restrictions at both farming and industry level that impact on the ability of Ireland to address critical stabilisation support measures and strategic transformative initiatives. Direct support for farmers through CAP Market Support or other measures to be made available in the event of further Sterling depreciation during exit negotiations. An intense and ongoing focus on cost competitiveness led by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation in areas such as labour, energy and insurance. The re-introduction of the Employment Subsidy Scheme and the Enterprise Stabilisation measures which were last applied during the financial crisis in 2009-2011; €25 million in funding for market diversification and product innovation measures; In addition, trade support measures including export trade financing and export credit guarantees to support the continued development of international export markets; A substantial increase in resourcing of the international market access unit of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine; An access to finance package that includes sustainable financing via funding from the Irish Strategic Investment Fund and the SBCI; EU solidarity with farmers also requires that there must be no reduction in the CAP budget arising from the UK exit. Transitional arrangements Transitional arrangements for businesses to plan and prepare for any new FTA arrangements must be put in place, as required. It is critical that companies retain as full access to each other’s markets as possible. Overall, customs procedures must be dealt with as part of the first phase of Article 50 negotiations. Structural and Adjustment Funding Structural and adjustment funding must be provided by the EU, if required, to the farming and food sectors that are disadvantaged due to changes in the relationship post Brexit between the EU and UK.

Undesirable employment trends in Leitrim and Border Region Undesirable employment trends in Leitrim and the rest of the Border region continue to reign, despite the positive news on this front heralded by the Government. 2006 was the most recent year that saw an increase in employment greater than the 65,100 estimated nationally for 2016. Yet the yearly employment growth rate in the Border region was only a fraction of the

national average (just 1.3%, compared to a national rate of 3.3%). The total number of jobs in the region increased by only 2,500; a mere 13% of what is needed. It is not just the Leitrim that has suffered, as regional variations in employment rates and trends have been conspicuous since the beginning of the downturn in 2007. However, it is the key statistics on the Border region that are most striking: Employment has fallen by 11% in the last ten years; This rate is almost twice the national average, and six times that of Dublin; The unemployment rate is a third greater than in the capital. Despite the huge drop in the numbers employed in the region, there is no commensurate increase in unemployment numbers. Instead, the labour force has fallen by an incredible 30 times that of Dublin as people in the region deal with a widespread lack of employment opportunities in the manner they always have: emigration.

Similar trends are playing out further West where employment has fallen by 9.1 % over the last ten years; five times more than in Dublin. These trends point to a development strategy that did not take balanced regional development into account, and focused instead on economic growth without taking into account the nuances required to ensure all areas of the country benefit from economic recovery. A sustainable society requires balanced regional development. The current imbalance is detrimental to the regions, but also to the greater Dublin area, as great strain is put on the capital’s housing, education and transport infrastructure. Among the issues that must be taken into consideration are the development of an adequate rural broadband network, integrated public transport throughout the regions, and the development of regional economic and social hubs. Lovely Erin is Leitrim’s 2017 Rose

North West Counselling Counselling for people with addictions

The 2017 Leitrim Rose for 2017 is the lovely Erin Moran from Ballinamore. Erin was crowned at a packed Rose of Tralee selection night in The Bush Hotel on Saturday night week last. 11 wonderful young ladies took part in the fun event and after the drum roll, Erin, a 27-year-old primary school teacher, was called out to represent Leitrim in the International Rose of Tralee Festival this August. CEO of the Rose of Tralee, Anthony O

Gara, began proceedings by thanking the people of Leitrim for their continued support for the festival and for producing such a high calibre of girls to represent Leitrim each year. Galways Bay FM’s Ollie Turner was MC and put the girls at ease during their interviews with great humour and had the audience in the palm of his hand for the night. Outgoing Leitrim Rose Annmarie

Keegan gave a lovely account of all of the experiences she had throughout the year. The judges, which included Rose Escort Oran Boyle, who married 2009 Leitrim Rose Mary Heslin just two weeks ago, handed the envelope to Ollie, who in turn officially started Erin Moran’s year of being the 2017 Leitrim Rose. We wish the Ballinamore girl every success.

Ballinrobe, Ballyhaunis and Claremorris will showcase all the latest fashions at the South Mayo Fashion Show with MC on the night from former Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh. Speaking about the 16th National Enterprise Week, Alan Durcan, Head of Bank of Ireland Mayo, said; “Through Bank of Ireland’s National Enterprise Week programme we aim to help small and medium businesses in Ireland in practical ways and to mark the 16th successful programme we are proud to host a large number of events across the country. The theme, ‘Scaling Your Business’, aims to help SMEs showcase their products and services and connect them with like-minded mentors and entrepreneurs. I would encourage businesses across the country to get involved in the many events taking place from 12th to 19th May.

Irish Cancer Society urges the North West to think SunSmart

T

he Irish Cancer Society has said that almost one in four (23%) of skin cancer deaths in Ireland are from the construction, outdoor and farming industry. As it launches its annual SunSmart campaign, the Society said that farmers and construction workers in the Mayo area need to be extra vigilant during the summer months. It also pointed to UK research which emerged recently showing that working in the sun could lead to one death and around five melanoma cases a week. The report, published in the British Journal of Cancer said that construction workers diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer had the highest number of deaths (4 in 10), followed by agriculture workers (over 2 in 10). The Society has teamed up with the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) and the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) to urge all outdoor workers to protect their skin and reduce their risk of skin cancer. Launching the campaign, Kevin O’Hagan, Cancer Prevention Manager with the Irish Cancer Society said, “These figures from the CSO show that in 2014, we had around one death every week in Ireland that is related to sun

exposure at work. Coupled with the research from the UK, it shows just how extensive, and unfortunately fatal, sun damage can be for outdoor workers. “It’s vital that we pay heed to this in the north-west this summer. You don’t have to be in a Mediterranean country for the sun to do damage to your skin and Irish people need to wise up to that. It would be really useful if work places whose employees work predominately outdoors did a risk assessment and put in place policy in relation to protection from sun exposure” “Every year in Ireland, over 10,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer, and figures show that 330 people were diagnosed in Mayo alone. More men than women were diagnosed with 185 men getting skin cancer compared to 145 women. Whether it’s sunny or cloudy, everyone should protect their skin and this summer, we are asking people to follow our SunSmart Code for best protection.” IFA President Joe Healy said, “We are delighted to support this campaign once again this year as we see the importance of this advice for our members. Farmers are outdoors from

sunrise to sunset, and very often have no protection on their skin so are very vulnerable to skin cancer. We want to encourage farmers to reduce their risk of sun damage by organising their day so that they are in the shade between 11am and 3pm and check their skin regularly for changes.” Tom Parlon, Director General of the CIF said, “The research from the UK is a very clear indication that we need to take skin protection on building sites very seriously. Our members work in all weathers and trades like bricklayers and labourers spend a huge amount of time in direct sunlight. This is our first year partnering with the Irish Cancer Society’s campaign and we are determined to do all we can to spread the SunSmart message among our members. It’s too serious not to. Both organisations have produced a leaflet for their respective members on how to be safe in the sun and how to reduce their risk of skin cancer. The leaflets will be distributed to farming and construction families and at trade events throughout the summer. For more information on skin cancer or how to be SunSmart, visit www.cancer.ie/Sunsmart

The IT Crowd Doing Sligo Proud Three new and innovative BA Honours Degree courses have been launched by Sligo IT, making the already highly lauded institute a much sought after destination for even more students. Due to commence in September of this year are two Humanities degrees, one in Sociology and Politics and the other in English and Psychology, as well as a groundbreaking new BA in Writing and Literature.

L

Una-Mannion

aunched at The Model last month by IT President Dr Brendan McCormack, with guest speaker Sligo-born actress and novelist Pauline McGlynn, these three new courses look set to bring a whole new influx of students to the town, as well as producing ever more talent from within. The BA in Writing and Literature, in particular, promises a whole new departure for the college. The programme is chaired by Una Mannion, an accomplished poet and writer as well as an established lecturer at the IT. As she sees it, “This is a milestone for Sligo and the Northwest... We have such a rich cultural and literary legacy in this region. Storytelling is part of who we are, and it is recognised as an invaluable skill, integral to both creative and professional industries.“ Having recently won a coveted Hennessy Literary Award for Emerging Poetry, Mannion is perfectly placed to guide such a degree programme in the right direction. Promising hands-on teaching methods like workshops, visiting guest talks and field trips, as well as the traditional lectures and seminars, students will learn a vast array of skills, from fiction and non-fiction writing to cultural journalism, digital media, poetry and screenwriting, as well as studying literature, drama and film. The combined humanities degrees also signal a time of great

Pauline McLynn

advancement for Sligo IT, as it works towards re-designation as a Technological University, with over €60 million spent towards this end in the past decade alone. Breda McTaggart is head of the Department of Social Sciences; “This is a first for IT Sligo and the region, and is a response to the growing demand for degree courses featuring these subjects in the humanities area... These courses provide a new, more accessible gateway to the study of

humanities in the North West region. “ The Psychology and English degree is designed to inspire students in both subjects - in the written word and expression and in the human mind and behaviour - whilst the Sociology and Politics degree offers a thought-provoking and challenging approach to studying our society, its structure, culture and organisations. The launch of these three new courses marks the continued success and unlimited potential of our third level educational institute here in Sligo. With so many varied and highly regarded courses on offer, excellent results from students and the impressive Knocknarea Arena and Innovation Centre as part of the campus, it seems there is no stopping the rise and rise of Sligo IT.

Sligo Tapas Trail bringing Spanish flavours to Sligo A Yeats Weekend celebration from Sligo Food Trail

S

ligo Food Trail presents the Sligo Tapas Trail as part of the Yeats Weekend celebrations from 8-10th June 2017. An astounding variety of creative, tapas sized specialities will be offered along the Sligo Tapas Food Trail for just €5 per dish. Sligo’s best restaurants, gastro pubs, cafes and food providers will showcase Sligo’s finest

fresh produce and culinary innovation in tapas form so everyone can try some. Anthony Gray, Chairman of Sligo Food Trail and former President of the Restaurants Association of Ireland is an supporter and commented, “Following the success of Sligo Food Trail since its launch, the annual Sligo Tapas Trail further underlines the strength of local,

traditional and organic producers of seafood, meats and vegetables in Sligo.” Anthony’s restaurant Eala Bhán is taking part in the Sligo Tapas Trail along with other Sligo Food Trail members including Le Fournil, Café Fleur, Lyons Café, Knox, Sweet Beat, Osta Café & Wine Bar, Hargadons, The Swagman and more. Traditionally tapas were a Spanish appetiser or snack often served in bars. It has evolved into an entire sophisticated cuisine featuring both hot and cold dishes, sweet and savoury dishes. The annual Sligo Tapas Trail is a celebration of the finest fresh ingredients, many from local waters and the wild, with a distinctly Spanish twist. Last year the Sligo Tapas Trail was a huge success with locals and visitors alike. It’s expected to be just as popular this time around with more than 30 different tapas dishes on offer. The 70+ Sligo Food Trail members are an exciting mix of producers, markets, cafes, restaurants, craft beer, gastro pubs and accommodation scattered all around the county. Many are on the Wild Atlantic Way and others draw visitors inland to discover less known areas of this lovely and fascinating county. Since the Trail was launched just over a year ago, a steady stream of awards has been won by different members. Information on Sligo Food Trail is readily available through the website (www.sligofoodtrail.ie), social media and an attractive printed map/brochure combination which is available in the Fáilte Ireland Tourist Information Offices as well as from members. The project is funded by CEDRA, Dept. of Agriculture, Sligo County Council, LEO Sligo, Food Trail Members, Fáilte Ireland and Sligo Tourism Ltd. www.sligofoodtrail.ie

Alcohol Report signals threat to Mayo jobs A new report carried out by DKM Economic Consultants into the SocioEconomic Impact of the Public Health Alcohol Bill (PHAB), has found that the proposed measures would have a detrimental impact on jobs and the local economy in Mayo and that there was little evidence that it would reduce harmful drinking. The report commissioned by Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) which represents the alcoholic drinks manufacturers and suppliers in Ireland examined proposals contained in the Bill, including Minimum Unit Pricing, regulations and restrictions around labelling, marketing, advertising and retailing of alcohol. The author of the report, John Lawlor of DKM Economic Consultants said, “Our research highlighted that measures contained in the PHAB would have a huge impact on an industry with an annual turnover of almost €3 billion in 2015 (excluding Excise Duties and VAT), exports valued at €1.1 billion and which supports almost 3,600 jobs in the drinks and hospitality sector in Mayo and a wages bill of over €77 million. Speaking about the impact of the Bill, the author of the report, John Lawlor of DKM, pointed out the potential dangers of any additional

costs to retailers and exporters, “Since the Brexit result, sterling has dropped by 16%, and remains in flux. If Minimum Unit Pricing is implemented in the Republic but not in the North, then there will be a permanent shift in price levels, which will only serve to further incentivise cross border shopping. The reality of the crossborder dimension of MUP was emphasised by the former Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar in December 2015 when he declared that it was the Government’s intention to “go ahead with minimum pricing at the same time as Northern Ireland,” noting that “it would be totally counterproductive if people just went North of the border. Thus the issue of cross border trade will come into sharp focus in Mayo”. John Lawlor said “Measures contained in the Bill will have a disproportionate impact on rural Ireland. In particular, smaller retailers in towns & villages may decide it’s too costly to sell alcohol on their premises, reducing product availability and choice for customers in rural towns in Mayo. Proposals in the Bill will severely restrict sports sponsorship as alcohol brands will be banned from referring to the sport in any advertising material-this will have a trickle-down

effect and could impact the sponsorship of smaller local events.” “Furthermore, the increased cost on producers, particularly small local producers, and new entrants to the market, would put new start-ups including craft breweries and distilleries at a major disadvantage. For example, requirements under the Bill for an Ireland-only health label would be very costly for small producers. The severe restrictions on marketing and advertising proposed in the Bill would be detrimental for large and small producers and impact their ability to innovate and launch new products on the Irish market”. DKM Director John Lawlor concluded, “Our findings show that there is little evidence that measures contained in the Bill would reduce harmful drinking. However, it will incentivise cross broader shopping, impact the local economy and threaten jobs in Mayo. Given the negative impacts on the economy, the lack of evidence of the effectiveness that it would tackle harmful drinking, and the long term downward trend in alcohol consumption and youth drinking in Ireland, the measures proposed in the PHAB will severely impact a sector already vulnerable to the impacts of Brexit”.

WHAT IS ROOT TREATMENT?

R

oot Treatment, root canal, call it what you will, this is one area of dental treatment which seems to strike dread into the heart of very many of our patients. Yet it is normally a reasonably straightforward process, and it allows the dentist to save teeth which would otherwise have to be extracted. Root treatment entails removing dead and/or infected tissue from inside the tooth and filling the resultant space. In the centre of all teeth there is a hollow space, known as the root canal. In a healthy tooth this space contains the nerve and its attendant blood vessels. These can become damaged by trauma to the tooth, by decay, or even by extensive dental work, such as deep fillings. If the damage is severe enough, the nerve will die. Once it has died it can very easily become infected, leading to pain and sometimes swelling. This is what is commonly known as a dental abscess. When this has happened the dentist has only 2 alternatives; extract the tooth, or perform root treatment. In the latter case, the centre of the tooth is opened and any dead, dying or infected tissue is cleaned out. The cleaning is carried out with special files which also shape the root canal to make it easier to fill later on. The dentist will also irrigate the inside of the root canal to wash out any debris. Root treatment usually requires at least 2 appointments. In between visits, an antiseptic dressing and a temporary filling will be placed in the tooth. On subsequent visits, if the tooth is free of pain and

swelling, the root canal can be filled and the tooth restored. Unfortunately root treatment is not always successful. Irrespective of how careful the dentist is, success cannot be guaranteed. The failure rate is typically around 10-15%. Failure of root treatment usually results from recurrence of infection, or because the infection has not been cleared in the first place. Either way it frequently leads to extraction. A further complication of root treatment is that teeth will often darken after the procedure. This can be a significant cosmetic issue with front teeth. In addition, root filled teeth can become more brittle over time. This is due to the fact that the process removes the internal blood supply of the tooth, causing the dentine to dry out. As a consequence of this, root filled teeth are more susceptible to fracture in the longer term. Both the cosmetic and structural complications often lead to root treated teeth requiring further treatment. Not uncommonly, it is necessary to place a crown on the tooth after root treatment. However, because of the risk of failure of root treatment, it is prudent to wait before placing any crown. Opinion varies on how long one should wait to assess the success of root treatment, but 3-6 months is typical. Given all of the associated risks and complications one might well ask, why do root treatment in the first place? Well, quite simply, if a tooth requires root treatment the only other alternative is extraction. Ultimately, preserving the natural tooth is the best thing to do if at all possible. Not necessarily an easy path, but certainly the one any dentist would choose for their own tooth if they were in that position.

C

hoosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task. It really doesn't have to be. Back in my wedding coordinator days i always advised brides and grooms-to-be to arrive armed with some information. This allowed me, as the wedding coordinator, to tailor the information to provide so as not to overwhelm the couple. You don’t need to have a 100% or even 20% visualisation of the day you want but there are a few essentials that are important to know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date: Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea of what you feel you are willing to

spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue: You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Mar-

quee, Glamping, Restaurant and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on your abroad location as there are

some excellent destination planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see if you can add your personal touch to it. 8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your chosen venue. If there have been

issues, you will be aware so that you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. If it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

How to write a flawless father of the bride speech Northwest Express May, 2017

W

hat to include in your speech - Whether you intend to make it short and sweet, or to really reap the benefits of the spotlight, your speech will need to contain some basic elements if it is to be in keeping with tradition. These are… The intro You need to introduce yourself, but it doesn’t have to

be reminiscent of an AA meeting. Tell them your name and maybe crack a small joke to make yourself feel relaxed.

The welcome Make a formal welcome to everyone, and thank them for coming. Try to mention, in particular, the bride’s mother and the groom’s parents too.

Your daughter She’s made you pay for it, and now’s your chance to get a little of your own back on her! Recall a funny anecdote from her youth, or simply tell her how proud you are of the woman she’s become. Your son-in-law Formally welcome the groom to your family, in any way you feel appropriate. You

can mention how you felt about him when you first met him, or a moment when you’ve been particularly glad he’s around. Parting wisdom As the elder speaker at the wedding, you should impart some of your wisdom to the happy couple about maintaining a healthy marriage or living a happy life. This is also a good place to throw in some jokes about wives, weddings or life in general, just as long as it doesn’t upset your wife! The toast Finish up by asking everyone to stand and raise a glass to the happy couple. No doubt, the best man will do something similar at the end of his speech too, but it’s the traditional way to close yours.

Top tips for making it fun The father of the bride might be a mature gentleman, but that doesn’t mean your speech has to be dull. Here are some top tips to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved… Timing is everything At many weddings, fathers of brides have been known to drone on for some time, and

that’s only fair. However, to keep things fun, engaging and avoiding Aunty Doreen falling asleep in her soup, aim for a speech that lasts around six to seven minutes in total. Read your speech through at your normal speaking pace to gauge how long this really is.

Keep it clean Jokes are a great way to break the ice and loosen up the crowd, but don’t be too focused on being funny. You’re the elder statesman of the speakers today, so you can afford to be a bit more conservative in your words. That doesn’t mean you have to be full though; a few jibes at the expense of the wedding or your daughter’s love of spending money are fine, just don’t go too close to the bone. Leave it to the best man to really roast up the groom, and focus on welcoming your new son-in-law to the family and toasting the happy couple. Hold on to your emotions This is such a big occasion for you and all your family, it can be easy to get caught up in the emotion of it all. Do you best to keep things light and happy, as nobody likes to see a grown man in tears. If there are some personal

things you would like to say to your daughter, but don’t want to include in your speech, write them down for her to read on the day instead. The last word Ask any public speaker what their biggest fear is, and they’ll pretty much always say it’s forgetting where they are in their speech. Fumbling over your words and getting a bit lost is nothing to be ashamed of, provided you can make a quick recovery and get back on track okay. Take your speech on cue cards with bullet-pointed reminders of what you want to talk about, rather than printing it all out in full. This will give you a more natural delivery, and will save you having to read through several paragraphs to find your place after getting lost. If you do get stuck, use a moment to clear your throat, take a drink of water or give your daughter a kiss. These moments might seem a lifetime to you, but will feel like a natural pause to your audience, and will give you the breathing space you need to get things back on track. Take your time, don’t panic and try to enjoy your moment of fame.

hat to include in your speech - Whether you intend to make it short and sweet, or to really reap the benefits of the spotlight, your speech will need to contain some basic elements if it is to be in keeping with tradition.

A month by month checklist to plan your perfect wedding.

need, including marquee, chairs, tables, etc, and book a caterer.

12 months Ideally, planning should begin 12 months before the big day. Decide on the style of wedding you want. Booking your reception venue is a priority. Book reception entertainment/musicians/DJ. If you’re employing a wedding consultant/planner, choose a professional with a good reputation. You’ll be spending a lot of time together, so be sure that you select a person you can get along with.

10 months Choose your cake maker and cake design. Confirm the menu with the reception venue. You’ll have given plenty of thought to your wedding outfits, and those of your attendants. Make your final decision. Allow at least six months for a made-tomeasure dress to be completed. Start looking for accessories. If you are hiring formal wear for male members of the party place your order. Choose your wedding ring(s).

11 months Book your photographer and/or videographer. If the ceremony is to be held in a church, synagogue, mosque or other religious building, check that you will be permitted to take photographs or film there. Choose your attendants, best man and ushers and get the wedding date firmly in their diaries. If you’re holding your reception in a marquee on your own land, reserve all the equipment you will

9 months If you have made a final decision on your dress, your bridesmaids’ dresses and the general theme, choose your florist and organise bouquets and buttonholes, and flowers for the church or reception. If you’re marrying in church, check that it is appropriate for you to decorate the church (the ladies who normally decorate the church might do it for you by special

arrangement), and confirm with the reception venue whether or not they are including floral decoration as part of the package. If you’ve set your heart on a particular honeymoon, book it early to avoid disappointment. If you’re undecided, start browsing the brochures and book as soon as you’ve made your choice. Remember that exotic destinations may require vaccinations and that some courses of vaccinations or drugs must start several weeks before you leave (and continue after your return). Book your flight ticket in the name on your passport. Organise your gift list.

them if necessary. Some countries will deny entry if your passport is close to expiry.

8 months If you’re arranging a church wedding, chat to the vicar and/or organist about music. Discuss possible dates for a rehearsal, if required, and finalise the form of the service and the readings prior to having the invitations and order of service printed. If you’re having a civil wedding, choose any readings that you wish to include in the service. Send copies of your chosen readings to the person you have asked to read, so that they can practice.

5 months If you aren’t spending your wedding night at your reception venue, book accommodation. Either make bookings for guests (remember you will probably be able to negotiate a reduced rate for a block booking) or give them a list of local hotels/guest houses to make their own bookings. 4 months Confirm that everything you have booked so far is on course and that all friends and family involved in the arrangements are sure of their role. If the stationery hasn’t arrived, chase it up. Give the caterers your estimated number of guests.

7 months Have another look at your provisional guest list. Order your stationery, which includes invitations, place-cards, orders-of-service, thank-you notes, napkins, matchbooks, favours, little boxes for posting wedding cake, etc. Start looking for clothes for your honeymoon. Check the expiry date of your passports and renew

6 months Book your wedding transport or make firm arrangements with family and friends about lifts or borrowing vehicles. Arrange reliable back-ups. Buy gifts for best man, attendants, etc. As soon as you have your veil, tiara or other head-dress, make an appointment with your hair stylist to discuss and try various styles. Visit beauty salons/make-up counters to discuss and try ideas.

3 months Send out the invitations and keep an up-to-date list of refusals and acceptances. Send out your thank-you notes for gifts as they arrive and keep a record of who has given what.

2 months Try on all your wedding clothes. If you are unhappy with anything, take action now. If you have left anything to others to organise, check that they have done it. Confirm your honeymoon booking. Check whether you need visas. Arrange foreign currency if necessary. Work out a seating plan for the reception. Arrange your hen and stag nights or delegate the task to your chief bridesmaid and best man. Do not hold either the night before the wedding. 1 month In all the hustle and bustle of wedding preparations, don’t forget each other. Make time for each other and if you can, don’t discuss wedding preparations. Buy each other little gifts and remember why you’re doing this. Make a plan of timings for the day and distribute a copy to everyone concerned. Make enquiries about any other events being held on the same day that might create traffic delays. If you will be moving into a new home after the wedding, arrange forwarding of post and any important changes of name. Buy a guest book to place at the reception so your friends and relatives can record messages. Delegate tasks to your friends and relatives. Make sure that somebody has your handbag, make-up, hairbrush, tissues, etc, handy, and a large umbrella in their car/in the vestry just in case. Write your speech(es). Enjoy your hen and stag nights. The planning should be over by now and it’s time to unwind, relax and look forward to the big day.

them frolicking around at your reception, you have to run the risk of upsetting some of your friends by excluding children from the guest list. Hopefully everyone will understand that it’s your day, and not take offence. It will probably be the case that many of your guests -

K

ids just love a wedding. It’s probably more to do with the dressing up than anything else, but even the most cherubic loses interest fairly quickly, so you need to come up with a sure-fired remedy to keep them sweet. Professional crèches are the perfect solution. Trained individuals will arrange everything needed to keep the little darlings happy, and you’ll know they’re in a safe and secure environment, while you party on. Planning a wedding is all about decisions, and one of the trickiest is whether or not to invite children. You have to decide on this one

fairly early in the planning, since the presence of children might affect your choice of venue, and will definitely affect your numbers and budget. If you’ve got a clutch of child attendants to accompany you down the aisle, have young children of your own or the day wouldn’t be complete without the sound of children - both happy and unhappy - then you’ve already made the decision. If, on the other hand, you’re apprehensive at the thought of children’s voices possibly interrupting your ceremony, and you don’t much like the idea of

and even some parents - will be pleased rather than upset, though you may lose a few who can’t arrange suitable care or are nursing young babies. If children are to be included on the guest list, you can minimise possible problems. It’s quite acceptable for ushers to have a quiet word with guests with young

children, requesting they sit at the back of the church or civil venue and take their child out if it becomes noisy. This should decrease the risk that you’ll have to listen to little Emily or Jack’s crying every time you listen to your wedding video over the following 50 years.

arkree Castle Sligo re-opened this March as an exclusive wedding and event venue, following a €12 million renovation that lasted two years. The impressive 17th Century Gothic castle in Co. Sligo joins Ballyseede Castle, Bellingham Castle and Cabra Castle in the Corscadden family’s exclusive hotel and venue portfolio of the “Romantic Castles of Ireland”. Markree Castle Sligo is a fairy-tale castle of such beauty that it is said

to have part-inspired the hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful”. For the last three decades the majestic castle operated as a country castle hotel and wedding venue. It was sold in 2014 and was closed to allow for a huge renovation. Under the expert guidance of conservation architects; Niall Small Architects, and Interior Architects; Audrey Gaffney Associates, the Gothic beauty of Markee Castle has been reclaimed. The renovation

project was a mammoth task. It is a credit to the passion and ambition of the new owners; the Corscadden family, a renowned family of hoteliers, that it has been completed to an awe-inspiring standard. Derelict areas have been completely restored. Original features have been saved where possible; and where they were beyond repair, they were re-created by teams of specialist, highly skilled craftsmen from all over Europe. Antique paintings and furniture once again fill the castle. The original rose gardens have been maintained and are beginning to see spring buds. The wedding and events team is in place and looking forward to welcoming some very special guests to the unique and exclusive venue that is Markree Castle. Along with weddings, Markree will also offer conference, incentive and team building packages, all of which take full advantage of the castle’s location in Sligo, Ireland’s Adventure

Capital. Markree Castle now operates as a member of the “Romantic Castles of Ireland” and joins sister properties, Cabra Castle, Co. Cavan, Bellingham Castle, Co. Louth and Ballyseede Castle, Co. Kerry to become the fourth castle

Your party will have plenty to keep you occupied in Westport. Sligo The capital of County Sligo is an attractive town with good bars and restaurants, theatres, art galleries and delicatessens. The leading club in the town The Velvet Room offers great packages for parties of all sizes. More and more stags and hens are making there way towards Sligo because of all the lively craic that comes with this closely knitted town. The pubs and clubs welcome the stag’s realizing they are a good earner for Sligo town. With plenty

of places to visit and activity’s to partake you’re guaranteed a good stag or hen weekend. Numerous hen and stag parties have went back to Sligo after being so please with their first. Leitrim Carrick on Shannon has been regarded as one of the best spots in Ireland for both hen and stag

parties. Most people will tell you they were at a stag or hen at some stage in carrick on Shannon. Each year it keeps realing back parties for the simple reason they provide everything a stag or hen party needs. Food, drink, women, men, crack, activities and accommodation. What more can you ask for, a cure for the hangover perhaps.

Immediate Health Benefits of Quitting Smoking Tobacco companies designed cigarettes to keep you hooked, so it’s not your fault if you’re still smoking. In fact, in the beginning society encouraged smoking to make men stronger with more stamina. Now, we are aware of the truth about what cigarettes do to our bodies. If you’re thinking about quitting smoking, your body will react quickly to the absence of nicotine and smoke in a positive way. In One Day Within the first half hour of stopping smoking, your blood pressure and pulse drop to normal. You’ll probably also feel your hands and feet start to warm up. By the eighth hour, the nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in your blood drops by half and oxygen levels increase to normal levels. You’ll feel more alert, sleep better, and be stronger. Smoker’s breath also disappears. If you can go 24 hours, your chance of a heart attack decreases. Within Three Days In 48 hours after quitting, your body eliminates carbon monoxide and nicotine completely. Your senses of smell improves and your taste buds switch from black and white to color. Your lungs start to

clear out mucus and other debris. Your nerve endings also start to regroup. Within three days, your bronchial tubes start to relax and breathing becomes easier. You can walk, run, and exercise easier and without coughing or wheezing. From One to Nine Months Circulation, lung function, and stamina improve. Walking becomes easier. Your lung capacity increases up to 30%. Coughing, sinus congestion, and shortness of breath decrease. Your lungs are better able to handle mucus, stay clean, and lower infection. Your overall energy increases. In One to Five Years In one year, your risk of heart disease drops to half that of a smoker. In two years, your risk of a heart attack drops to near normal. In five years, your risk of a stroke is the same as the risk of a non-smoker. The lung cancer death rate for former pack-a-day smokers decreases by almost half. There is now half the risk of mouth, throat, esophagus, and bladder cancer. Risk of cervical cancer is the same as a nonsmoker. In 10 Years Lung cancer death rate is like that of a person who doesn’t smoke and your body replaces the precancerous cells. The risk of pancreatic cancer is about the same as a non-smoker. The risk of

developing smoking-related cancer is almost the same as a non-smoker. In fact, now both diet and smoking cause 60% of cancers. After 15 Years The risk of heart disease is similar to person who has never smoked. The risk of death is also similar to a non-smoker. You’re now officially a non-smoker. If you’re a longtime smoker, quitting on the spot might be impossible. The chemicals in your brain make you feel like you can’t live without a cigarette. In the

end, you do have a choice, and you don’t have to do it alone. Armed with the knowledge of how your body reacts from mere minutes to long years can help you decide to quit smoking. What to expect when quitting There are nearly as many methods for quitting smoking as there are ex-smokers. Those who succeeded in breaking nicotine’s bonds cite everything from quitting cold turkey to hypnosis and even prescription lozenges as effective ways to stop smoking. Most of the tools offer temporary relief from the physical withdrawal symptoms of smoking cessation, but do not address the powerful psychological addictions. These are best addressed by behavioral modification counseling or group therapy, and by other techniques used successfully by former smokers. Strategies that address both the physical and psychological addictions are the most likely to succeed. The first two weeks after quitting smoking are critical to a person’s success. Withdrawal symptoms begin within just a few hours of the last cigarette smoked then

will increase in intensity until these symptoms peak after 3 to 5 days. After two weeks, the withdrawal symptoms disappear. Withdrawal symptoms include: Physical Symptoms: Headache Tingling in hands and feet Sweating Intestinal pain and discomfort in the form of cramps or nausea Sore throat, coughing, general respiratory problems similar to cold symptoms (the good thing, though, is this means the smokers’ lungs are clearing) Emotional Symptoms: Extreme mood swings: temper tantrums, feelings of dependency, neediness Irritability Anxiety Insomnia Lack of mental clarity — difficulty in concentrating Depression — in the short term, some smokers actually grieve the loss of cigarettes. Planning for these feelings of loss can help a smoker get through the early withdrawal symptoms of depression For further information or help visit quit.ie

Sing for the hell of it!

The Successful TD

Fri 19 May, 8pm €5 @ The Hawkswell Do you enjoy singing with others but just don’t have time to commit to joining a choir? Come join our new social sing along evenings…open to everyone and anyone who likes to sing. No musical experience is required. You don't need to audition, read music, memorise song words, or sing solo. It’s all about just having fun and singing together! Our choirmaster, Dave Flynn, will select popular songs and run through simple arrangements enabling you to sing your heart out. There is no commitment, no performance at the end, this is just singing for the hell of it!

Sat 10 June, 8pm, €20/18conc./10 u18s @ Hawkswell Theatre, Sligo. THE SUCCESSFUL TD follows the trials, tribulations, misadventures and hilarious antics of Tull McAdoo as he seeks re-election to the Dail in the "October Elections” Written by John B Keane in 1967 he displays his edge for humor and satire that are uncomfortably close to the

politics of today ... Peppered with Keane's gallery of madcap characters this show will have you laughing at politics (in a good way) from the start. Tull has roped in the help of his faithful daughter Kate while his wife nurses her various ailments in bed or Lisdoonvarna, but his arch enemy Flannery the local school teacher plans to scupper the election for Tull…
