ECENT research from AA Ireland indicates that we are slowly moving back towards 2007 levels when it comes to the cost of keeping a house. Owning and running a house in Ireland each year has jumped by more than €1,000 since 2018, according to the research. The average homeowner in Ireland is now spending over €17,000 on owning and maintaining their house. That equates to about 43% of the current average national wage. Every year, the AA analyses expenses related to owning and running a home, such as mortgage costs, property tax, heating and other bills. Undoubtedly, mortgage repayment costs outweighs all other outgoings. The increase in the cost of running a home comes following a rise in the national average price of a secondhand home in Ireland. Values increased from €243,000 during the third quarter of 2018 to €269,000 in the third quarter of this year. Those who took out a 90% mortgage this year are likely to pay out €11,000 per annum – an increase of 9.45% on last year. Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs, said: “While we’re still significantly off the peaks seen during the Celtic Tiger, house prices have continued to surge in the past 12 months representing a major issue for both those looking to acquire their first home and those trying to meet their monthly mortgage repayments. In fact, the increase in monthly mortgage repayments almost singlehandedly accounts for the over €1,000 increase in home running costs that we have seen this year. This is offset slightly by some drops in prices for electricity and broadband TV.” Continued on Page 4

Orchestra (TSO) in 1998” Louise continued: “This is the 33rd year that the Moy Singers will present their “Carols by Candlelight “. Over the years we have donated in excess of €50,000 to local charities and this year we are honoured to support the Mayo Roscommon Hospice.” Audiences can expect an amazing evening of music and song as the choir are accompanied by special guests, The Mayo Youth Orchestra under the direction of Anne Moriarty. Calls for moratorium on Leitrim wind farm developments

A

delegation from a group called Wind Aware Dromahair gave a special presentation to members of Leitrim County Council on Monday, November 4, calling on members to support a complete moratorium on wind farm developments until regulations are updated. The council executive absented themselves

for the duration of the presentation because of their role in planning matters in the county and, in particular, because the presentation focuses on concerns over a development which is proposed for North Leitrim and will be subject to the planning process. In their absence the group addressed local councillors highlighting their opposition

to further industrial wind turbine developments in the county. They highlighted Coillte's proposed Croagh wind turbine development which they said will consist of 10 turbines, 168m high - more than 60% larger than any of the existing turbines in the area. They said there are only four similar turbines of this scale in operation in Ireland and said that the current regulations applying to such developments were completely out of date and dealt with much smaller turbines. Wind Aware Dromahair have requested the Council adopt a moratorium on all planning for wind farms until strict regulations are in place to protect the community and the local environment. They, together with North Leitrim Sustainable Energy Community (NLSEC), presented alternative renewable energy solutions, suggesting that, rather than increasing wind capacity, NLSEC invites stakeholders to consider the alternatives and engage in sustainable energy projects that could help revive the local economy and provide genuine benefit to the community. Cllr. Mary Bohan proposed the council again write to the relevant minister to ask for the introduction of such a moratorium immediately pending the updating of new guidelines for such developments. Her motion received unanimous support.

Running a house now costing over €17k p.a. Continued from front page The calculations are based on the expenses of a new buyer but we must also take cognisance of those who bought in 2007 and still likely to be in negative equity. This grouping currently pays €4,653.48 more on mortgage repayments than those who have just bought recently. The second single most expensive bill for homeowners is in relation to maintenance,

repair and contingency funds. The AA estimates that the average homeowner is likely to spend or set aside €1,246.35 each year to keep up with wear and tear (7% of the overall estimate). Taking average usage figures, the AA estimates that homeowners will spend €815.72 (+3.79%) heating their three or four-bedroom home this year and a further €999.79 (-5.54%) on electricity.

Other costs included in the study were: home insurance (building and contents combined), at about €570.95; telephone and broadband bills €420; household appliances at €554.86; household cleaning products at €340.94; and domestic refuse collection at €300.72. Overall, the cost of owning and running a home has increased by almost €2,000 p.a. from the third quarter of 2015.

At the Mayo IFA Presidential and Deputy Presidential Debate in Castlebar recently with Mayo IFA County Chairman Martin Gilvarry (third from left) were: Thomas Cooney, Cavan, and Brian Rushe, Wicklow (both candidates for the deputy presidency), and presidential candidates, L to R: John Coughlan Cork, Angus Woods Wicklow and Tim Cullinane, Tipperary. The IFA Presidential Elections will take place at IFA branches up and down the country from 25th November to the 13th December. There has rarely been a more challenging period for Irish farming families with great uncertainty across the key farming enterprises from weak market prices for beef, Brexit, Mercosur, reform of the CAP and bad weather. Preparation are afoot to replace outgoing president Joe Healy, whose term as president was fraught with many difficulties, from flooding to drought, production promotion, collapse of prices, with the aforementioned Brexit dominating most of his time in office. There is widespread awareness that farming is in crisis with farmers in so many cases achieving prices that don’t cover production costs. With the collapse of beef prices there is a loss of 200 - 300 euro per head at slaughter stage in some cases. Supplementary payments (single farm payments) are being reduced and eroded. As a consequence farmers are angry. There is frustration and confusion which manifested in protests outside meat factory gates earlier this year. Unfortunately, this has led to a backlog of cattle for slaughter and a further reduction in prices. The IFA were instrumental in getting an emergency aid package but the Department made the accessing of payments from the fund so difficult under the BEAM scheme that many farmers did not apply for it. The incoming president will face an uphill battle to restore confidence and achieve a reasonable return for farming families. We take a look at the three candidates for the Presidency. IFA is encouraging its members to come out and vote to elect their new leader and have their say in policies going forward. ANGUS WOODS Angus is Chairman of the IFA’s National Livestock Committee and a full-time farmer who farms a mixed suckler beef and sheep enterprise in the Wicklow Hills within an ANC area. He runs the farm with his parents, Hazel and Neale, his wife Aileen and daughter Evie, with some help from brother Graham. Angus’s farm is very hilly, with very little top soil on the higher fields. He runs a suckler herd and keeps all the progeny to finish on the farm. The pressures on livestock farmers have directly impacted the income of the Woods farm. Angus says: “I know the income

pressures that livestock farmers and their families have been under because, as a livestock farmer, I have been dealing with the exact same pressures.” “IFA’s job is to represent farming and deliver on real policies that support farming incomes, rural regeneration and the future of Irish agriculture and vibrant rural communities. Within the IFA Livestock Committee we recognised the absolute necessity of emergency income supports and secured, many against the odds.” However, he knows there is a lot more do to across the board to support farm families and the future of farming, including a new REPS scheme, a new Early Retirement Scheme and a new Cap Scheme. Angus is asking IFA members to support him with their No. 1 Vote in the upcoming elections for President of the IFA. JOHN COUGHLAN John and his wife, Ann, have a dairy and beef farm near Buttevant, Co. Cork. They have two children – Michael, who is studying in England, and Helena, a Nutrition Specialist who is also involved in the farm. They finish all calves to beef and purchase quality suckler calves to finish. They also grow cereals. John has over 25 years in the IFA and is Munster Chairman. His message is clear: “I want to be IFA president to protect farm family incomes, keep farmers on the land and keep rural Ireland viable. The cheap

food policy is not working for us and I will make this the centre of our CAP negotiations.” He feels Ireland is suffering the impact of cheap food and environmental measures. He aims to end this by targeting big business monopolies that cream off our income like he has done with Fertilisers Europe. He is confidently seeking farmers’ No. 1 for President. TIM CULLINAN Tim has been farming in Toomevara, Co. Tipperary, for over 40 years. He works in dairy, beef, tillage and pig farming – employing a number of people in the latter. He has never seen farm incomes so severely challenged or witnessed so much frustration amongst IFA members. He wants to put the fight back into IFA to deliver for the farmer and to meet the unprecedented challenges over the next four years. His track record shows his campaigns will be results orientated. He’s achieved success in securing bonus payments for Irish pigmeat and with unfair inspection, among other issues. Tim will fight for the farmer if elected and he seeks the No. 1 vote. IFA DEPUTY PRESIDENT Thomas Cooney from Laragh and Brian Rushe, Kildare seek the farmers’ vote for the position of IFA Deputy President.

Scoil Iosa is one of 50 primary schools participating in the programme, which partners local companies with students in second class in order to grow the children’s love for books and improve their reading fluency and comprehension.

Scoil Iosa pupils Sophie Conroy, Dakota and Bailey Langdon and "Car Mad Jack" book fan, Shane Collier pictured at the "Time to Read" launch with Lionbridge volunteers and mentors Nadia Ramadhan and Eileen McSweeney.

According to Scoil Iosa Principal Michael Tunney, “The Time to Read programme provides our students with kind and nurturing reading experiences where they are given carefully planned and appropriate opportunities to develop and enhance their literacy skills with the support of deeply caring adults who take a truly genuine interest in their lives.” “Volunteerism is important to Lionbridge on a global level,” said the company’s senior director of machine intelligence, Enda Cunnane. Just this year, Lionbridge made paid volunteer days available to all global employees. But the local connection is why Lionbridge Solution Architect Jimmy Nolan returns to Scoil Iosa year after year. This is Nolan’s third year to participate and he says “Working with the teachers, parents and children gives us all a great sense of community. It grounds us in the importance of being and contributing something locally. Seeing the kids’ imaginations spark when they discover new things in the books they are reading is a real buzz.” Since Time to Read’s initial launch, participant teachers have reported significant improvement in children’s reading abilities. The community based programme is part of BITC Ireland’s ongoing work to help businesses have a more positive impact on the communities in which they do business.

Samhain Lighting at Rockfleet Castle keeps Pirate Queen Spirit Alive

O

N the night of 31st October, as Ireland was alight with the traditional bonfires that herald the arrival of Samhain, Rockfleet Castle (or Carraigahowley Castle as it is also known), was ignited in its own vibrant glow that may have puzzled some of the local residents around Newport, Co. Mayo. Lit up in bright green and emblazoned with the Grace O’Malley Irish Pirate Queen crest on one side and #BelieveInGrace on another, the illumination can now be revealed as the work of Grace O’Malley Premium Irish Spirits, creators of Grace O’Malley Irish Whiskey and Heather Infused Gin, dedicated to the legendary Irish pirate queen, Granuaile, born in Co. Mayo in 1530. As Samhain is a time when the door between this world and the next is believed to become more fluid and spirits flow freely from the afterlife to earth, this transitional time from light to dark is one of remembrance of the departed and also a time for mischief and surprises. How better to celebrate the life of the legendary Irish Pirate Queen than to light up the iconic tower synonymous with her

name and her army of men, the mooring place for her galleys and the place where she passed in 1603. Grace O’Malley Spirits are as much about premium Irish spirits as they are about keeping the legend of Granuaile alive, to ensure her great rebellious heart is never forgotten. The hashtag #BelieveInGrace, was created to remember Grace and celebrate the formidable woman she was, who although omitted from the official history books of Ireland, has lived on through folklore, poetry, song, and now spirits, that tell the great stories from her lifetime. Grace O’Malley Spirits are as passionate in keeping the legend alive as they are about premium Irish whiskey and gin, and in ensuring these stories travel far and wide to an international audience. Keep Her Lit at Rockfleet Castle for #BelieveInGrace is the latest in a series of activity from the brand that has Co. Mayo at its heart and Grace O’Malley’s stories in its expression. While marking the arrival of Samhain, Grace O’Malley Spirits have a host of activity planned for the ‘birth month’ of Grace

O’Malley, with 30 days of Grace throughout November. Last night’s event was marked with a special whiskey celebration in the Grainne Uaile pub in Newport where some of the regulars joined in a toast to their legendary local. Next week, the birthday celebrations continue with The Homecoming in Dublin, where mixologists from Ireland and around the world will celebrate the spirit of adventure with new cocktail creations in Grace O’Malley’s name. The Homecoming, at the Rag Trader Bar on Drury Street in the city’s creative quarter is not only a nod to Grace the trader, the shrewd businesswoman with a strong network of connections from the most northerly coasts of Scotland, throughout Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal, but also to the famous song that honours her Óró, Sé do Bheatha Bhaile – Horo, welcome home. Following hot on the heels of their sponsorship of Westival, the brand continues its support of local pro-sailor, Joan Mulloy, a descendant of Grace O’Malley, who has just left shore to compete in the Transat Jacques Vabre race from Le Havre to Salvador de Bahia in Brazil. Joan and her sailing partner, Alexia Barrier, will race aboard the boat 4myplanet and are the only all-female duo in the challenge currently underway where a total of sixty boats are competing. Earlier this year, Joan retraced the route of her ancestor from Mayo to London in her own boat, #BelieveInGrace, sailing along the River Thames to Tower Bridge, the same journey that saw the Irish Pirate Sea Queen come face to face with the Virgin Queen in their historic meeting at Greenwich in late summer of 1593. In keeping with the re-enactment, Joan brought a special presentation bottle of Grace O’Malley Irish Whiskey on board to commemorate the famous meeting. Follow the journey where Mayo gives the green light to the celebrations throughout November on www.graceomalleywhiskey.com and on social @graceomalleyspirits. Value Centre Castlebar open alcohol-free “Zero Bar” BWG Foods Wholesale and Value Centre Castlebar is aiming to plug a gap in the market with the introduction of our dedicated alcohol free section coined

Pictured with Value Centre’s healthy and alcohol free hampers are: Gerry Keady, Value Centre Regional Manager, Jenny Egan, Marketing Manager and Paul Bealin, Head of Sales

the “Zero Bar” with alcohol free options across wine, prosecco, beer, cider and gin. Alcohol free range sales have increased 224% since last year, driven by the health and wellness trend, with the worldwide market for non-alcoholic beer projected to double to about more than €20 billion by 2024, according to market research firm Global Market Insights. This stat infers the need and demand for alcohol-free options that still remind consumers of alcohol. In response to this Global trend, Value Centre Castlebar has moved quickly to adapt and ensure the tastes of our customers are catered for, especially with the Christmas period approaching. Corporate Gifting remains a very strong component of the festive season for businesses in Ireland and Value Centre Castlebar, recognising a gap in the market for innovative gifting ideas, has shifted gears this year and expanded their offering to include

healthy and alcohol free hamper options. Products include best sellers such as Heineken 0.0, Estrella Galicia 0.0, Bulmers 0.0, Stiegl alcohol free, Peroni Libera 0.0, O’Donnells crisps and KP peanuts. The range doesn’t end there however, with other alcohol free options including nosecco, an alcohol free processo and Seedlip, the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit. And, for those with slightly different taste-buds, healthier than normal indulgences such as Propercorn, Purdey’s the original vitality drink, Fulfil and Kind protein bars are also included in their hampers. Bespoke hampers are available from €30 and can be tailored to suit any budget. For those seeking to take the stress out of corporate gifting this year, Value Centre Castlebar has a wide range of gifts to suit all budgets and tastes. So, whether you want to show your appreciation for a longstanding client, or say thank you to an important customer.

Mary Murphy, Margaret Feeney, Celia Casserly, Mary Duffy, Mary Dunbar, Julie O Loughlin, Mary Keegan, Maureen Davy, Nuala Flanagan, Geraldine Gordon, Mary Harkin, James Keegan of the Carraroe walkers group enjoying tha new facilities and walkways at St John's GAA club.

R

esidents in the greater Carraroe, Co. Sligo area are walking with pride after the recent unveiling of the new one kilometre looped walkway around the main GAA pitch and the GAA training pitch at Cuilbeg in Carraroe. Earlier this year St Johns GAA were recognised by Croke Park as being a healthy club and a smoke free club so to have the walkways open to the public only reinforces the commitment that this GAA club is giving to the local community. The new walkway is a community facility which can be utilised by all age groups, local residents and visitors to the Carraroe area. The infrastructure loops around both GAA pitches giving walkers a safe place to park up and

walk. Chairperson of St John’s GAA Seamus Casey says there is considerable excitement in the local community following the official opening of the facility. “the new walkway is something that the club had been thinking about for quite a while and we are extremely proud of what has been achieved.” “St Johns GAA held a Walk and Talk 24hr relay recently to raise funds for the completion of the project. Over one hundred people gave up their time to walk despite the wind and the rain and it was one of the most enjoyable nights ever witnessed in the club. We are also very grateful for the funding received from Sligo Leader as it went a long way to helping us complete this walkway

which itself has a tight gravel texture and is suitable for walkers of all ages and abilities. Without our fundraising team and Sligo Leader none of this would have been possible so a big thank you to all concerned.” The walkway around the training pitch has been in use since the summer but with the addition of the main pitch over the past couple of weeks it is proving very popular with walkers of all ages and abilities. Chairperson of CADRA Pat Benson along with the local walking group had a chance to road test the completed walkway recently and all were very impressed with the work that has been done. “To have a walkway such as this on our doorstep is fantastic and the fact that all ages and abilities can use it is a major bonus. Great credit to the GAA club and all involved”, said Pat Benson.

Save Leitrim weighs in on forestry licensing

R

ural community group Save Leitrim has issued a response to the recent announcement by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine on the matter of the issuing of forestry licences. Making a number of points on the topic, the group first noted that legislation has not changed in relation to various EU directives covering natura sites such as Special Protection Areas (SPAs), Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Annex listed species. Because of this, Save Leitrim claims that “all appeals and decisions made to date have been in breach of these regulations”. It is most likely the forest service was not in compliance with these EU regulations and the Minister [of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Andrew Doyle] and his officials have been dismissive and in contempt when making these decisions. In addition, noting that the department is set to recruit new ecologists, Save Leitrim has requested a review of “all applications approved in relation to protected habitats and protected species”. Finally, the group claims: “We know that the minister is very familiar with all of the investors that he has recently met, yet Minister Doyle refuses to meet with any person or

group that have highlighted serious ecological and social concerns in relation to grant driven applications.” Forestry Licences Last week, Minister Doyle noted

that there have been delays in the issuing of licences due to necessary changes in the procedures surrounding appropriate assessment, a requirement as part of the approvals process. “More transparent and ro-

bust” procedures are being introduced which will demonstrate the process by which the department arrives at a final decision regarding whether or not a project will adversely affect the integrity of a

natura site, according to the department. “We have a responsibility to ensure that all forestry applications are scrutinised and held to the highest possible environmental standards,” Minister Doyle said.

Alternative options to building a new calf shed

suitable for calves from two weeksof-age up to five months-of-age. The Pop-Up tunnel provides a wellventilated space, full of diffused natural light, with good airflow and loose bedding. Furthermore, the Pop-Up tunnel is designed to be rapidly installed and moved for maximum flexibility. The cost of installing a 22m-long and 9m-wide tunnel is typically €9,000 (excluding VAT).

D

ue to the rapid expansion of the dairy herd and the increasing number of dairy calves being produced, calf housing will be on the minds of many dairy farmers. The increase in calf numbers, and the fact that calves are required to stay on the farm 10 days before they are sold in the mart, has resulted in many farmers installing new calf housing facilities. Under the Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) ΙΙ, there have been 767 applications for calf housing that have been paid out at an approximate (total) value of €6.8 million. However, for many farmers, especially those who are recent entrants to dairy farming, they may not have the money or the time to build a new calf shed. Therefore, listed below are a few

alternative options for building a new calf shed that will get farmers through the busy calving period. Examples of alternative calf housing include: • Renovating an existing hayshed; • Individual or group calf hutches; • Calf igloo and veranda units; •Pop-Up tunnel. Renovating An Existing Shed Although it might not be the most fashionable choice, renovating an existing hayshed could be one of the cheapest options for farmers. The benefit of this type of shed is that it has a high-pitched roof, which allows for good airflow throughout the shed. The majority of these sheds span three or four bays, which would accommodate plenty of newborn calves. The only major cost (of renovating

this type of unit) is installing feed barriers at the front and placing gates in between the bays so that calves can be split in accordance with their weight or age. Calf Hutch An option that is growing in popularity over the last few years and that can be seen across Ireland is a calf hutch. This type of housing offers a number of benefits, such as providing a dry, well-ventilated and warm house for calves. Calf hutches can also stop the spread of disease, as calves have their own individual hutch, which prevents contact with other animals.

well-ventilated environment to rear calves and reduces the risk of pneumonia from occurring. They are not very common in Ireland but they are a simple and effective way of housing calves. Calf Pop-Up Tunnel The calf rearing Pop-Up tunnel is

Recommendations There should be good ventilation in the shed/house to remove effluent gases (ammonia) and prevent outbreaks of pneumonia. It is important to: clean out; wash; and disinfect calf housing. Furthermore, animal manure from calf housing should be properly disposed of in appropriate storage facilities. Moreover, clean water must be available to calves at all times, especially if they are scouring. This table (below) outlines the recommended space allowance for group housing calves.

Will the replacement for MF’s 7700 S series look like this…late next year?

There are two types of calf hutches: • Individual hutch; • Group hutch – it can house up to eight calves. The cost of calf hutches ranges from €345 up to €1,400. Calf Igloo And Veranda A robust, fiberglass-domed igloo can house between 13 and 15 calves with a penned, straw area outside the opening. When the calves are young they will stay in the warmth of the igloo; however, as they get older they will spend more time in the veranda. The igloo gives the calf the choice to seek shelter from the cold and draughts that may occur in the veranda. Moreover, the veranda provides a

M

assey Ferguson made the headlines by unveiling its ‘NEXT’ concept tractor at Agritechnica 2019 (in Germany).

The tractor’s broad outline mirrors that of a ‘prototype’ machine previously spotted in the vicinity of the AGCO (Massey Ferguson) tractor factory in Beauvais, France. According to Massey Ferguson, the tractor’s cab has a “fullyconnected human interface”; the ‘NEXT’ concept actually has no steering wheel but is, instead, steered using joysticks. It is described as “ready for autonomous driving”, as well as boasting the “next level of comfort”. Other noteworthy features include on-board crop scanning, an augmented reality heads-up windscreen display and carbon-free Trelleborg tyres (with an automatic tyre pressure control system). Other details are, at this stage, scant. However, it is believed that the tractor is home to a conventional diesel engine – albeit with a “radically different” drive-live beyond that. Production-Spec Versions In any event, expect to see production versions towards the end of 2020. While those tractors might not have all of the aforementioned features (i.e. joystick-steering), it is believed that they will (outwardly, at least, albeit wearing a red livery) resemble this concept tractor. It has been suggested – but not confirmed – that those productionspec tractors will eventually replace the existing 7700 S series.

Mary Mc Keon, Development Officer with the North West Simon Community is organising the sixth Nollaig na mBan – Little Black Dress Luncheon for the North West Simon Community and this year ladies the event falls on Sun 5thJan. The event starts at 1pm with a complimentary pre dinner drink and canapes in the Dungeon Bar with a pianist, followed by a three course exquisite lunch at 2pm in the magnificent ballroom at Kilronan Castle. Guests will get a chance to browse around various stands after the meal. To end it all there will be music from 5 to 7 in the Dungeon Bar. Dress code is black dress with a prize for the best splash of yellow (The Simon Community colours) just to make the event interesting! So ladies watch out for those yellow accessories!! Judging will be by Mike McCarthy and Paul Carroll who

have an award winning blog on fashion, beauty, lifestyle and news worthy stories. Known as the Funky Fashion Frolics, they won best social media award at the Meath Style Awards in 2017 and 2018 where the duo also proudly won the overall in excellence in style award. They regularity MC at fashion events and promise to be a lot of fun. There are excellent prizes up for grabs in the raffle including 2 nights B & B plus an evening meal in Kilronan Castle (worth €400) plus a voucher for Lough Rynn Castle. All proceeds of this event are going to the North West Simon Community, the charity that works with individuals and families in the North West to prevent homelessness. Last year alone the charity prevented 371 individuals from becoming homeless as most of the work is preventative. The feedback from last year’s event was extremely positive and

homelessness. Any donations of spot prizes are extremely welcome also. So Ladies Save the Date and support local this Christmas. Ideal Christmas gift and helping a worthy cause.

Eggsistentialism

Into The Wood by Kilmoremoy Kids Drama Group at Ballina Arts Centre

Jimmy Buckley is without a doubt one of Ireland's best loved and most respected performers. Jimmy has enjoyed many years at the top of his profession and received numerous awards including the prestigious Entertainer of the Year in the RTE Music Awards. Jimmy possess a very rare talent, not only as a phenomenal singer but also as a hilarious mimic of other major stars. Jimmys show contains a wide variety of material, Country, Big Ballads and tribute medleys to the greats of country music Hank Williams & Charlie pride. Along with his magnificent band Jimmy will entertain you superbly and looks forward to meeting friends old & new.

Wed 20 Nov 2019, 12pm & 8pm / €16/€14conc The Hawk’s Well Theatre Joanne Ryan's acclaimed, multi award-winning show is a funny, tender and moving exploration of reproduction in 21st-Century Ireland. Looking down the barrel of her final fertile years, one modern Irish woman goes on a comical quest to uncover the ifs, hows and crucially the whys of reproducing her genes. Mixing animation with stand-up, monologue and hilarious recorded interjections from her mother, Eggsistentialism takes a light-hearted but unflinching look at one of life's most compelling dilemmas: should making a life for oneself involve making another? Winner of a Lustrum Award, The Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready Award, Sydney Fringe's Critics’ Pick Award, Best Storytelling Bouquet at Edinburgh Festival and nominated for Best Performance at Melbourne Fringe. “Close to a masterpiece; intelligent, thoughtful, wry, funny and above all loving.” The Sunday Independent Funded by The Strollers Network Touring Production Award. Special parent-friendly performance at 12pm, babes in arms under 12 months welcome! There will be post show discussion folloiwng the 8pm performance.

23rd and 24th November, 7 p.m. As the result of the curse of a oncebeautiful witch (Saoirse Allen), a baker (Gavin Gilligan) and his wife (Rebecca Cronin) are childless. Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the witch's beauty: a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood-red cape, and a slipper of gold. During their journey, they meet Cinderella (Caoilfhinn Geoghegan), Little Red Riding Hood (Laura Jackson), Rapunzel (Annabelle Durcan) and Jack (Henry McLoughlin), each one on a quest to fulfil a wish. Once again, we are raising money for a local charity to tie in with our ethos of “Children raising money for children". A show with love, tears and laughter, this is one for all the family which you don't want to miss! Performed by Kilmoremoy Kids Drama Group. Produced and Directed by Jack Cronin.

GURU: Kevin McAleer comes to Arts Centre 29th November, 8.00 Join Ireland’s biggest lama Kevin McAleer for an evening of living hilariously in the moment, with mindfulness, tai chi with Chai tea, avocado dream therapy, moon-walking with wolves, vegan dentistry, and ego massage. McAleer trained for 33 years under the legendary Oprah Chopra in Palookaville, before founding the Mindless Nationalism Institute™ in Belfast in 1972. He will be signing copies of his very latest awareness bestseller, The Idiot’s Guide to Low Self Esteem, which has been translated into more than 94,000 languages worldwide and beyond. The top five reasons most diets fail

W

e’ve all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It’s frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure. But it doesn’t have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an Ottawa-based obesity expert and the author of The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours

Work.“If there was a quick fix we’d all be skinny,” he points out. “The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be.” So what’s preventing us from getting there? 1. We think dieting has to be painful. “The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about

suffering,” says Dr. Freedhoff. “It suggests that people struggling with their weight don’t deserve to eat like normal people or use food for comfort and celebration. Instead they’re only supposed to use food for fuel and shut off the other normal uses. This doesn’t work.” 2. We under-eat. Trying to starve yourself into thinness doesn’t work either. “Hunger is a very powerful physiological force,” says the diet doctor. “It’s second only to breathing for survival. To think we can fight 100 million years of evolution which has made our bodies really good at securing calories simply because we want to get into a particular clothing size is folly.”

Westport Foot Clinic Westport, Co. Mayo

Chiropodist: Martin Mc Nally Tel: 087 222 6260

3. We over-exercise. “People undertake exercise regimes that are truly ‘regimes’,” he says. “People see these shows on TV where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it’s a life sentence.” People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they’re burning, which can lead to frustration. “As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly,” he says. “That’s why gyms are busy in January and empty in March.” 4. We eat out too often and consume too much processed food. “We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day.”

5. We don’t think about the calories we’re drinking. “People are usually aware that sugarsweetened beverages can be problematic but they don’t always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee,” he says. “And people really don’t like to think about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that’s something you can’t ignore if you’re trying to lose weight.”Best advice he can offer? “Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy — and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you’ve got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.”

It can be very expensive and time consuming trying out different treatments to get rid of head lice. Our single treatment takes up to 90 minutes and removes all the head lice and their eggs. Phone: 087-0967525
