HE life of a young teacher is not what it used to be. Nearly one-third of all teachers are now employed on parttime arrangements which force many into “income poverty”, according to the TUI (Teachers Union of Ireland). The proportion of those not on full-time contracts rises to 50% for those in the under-30 age bracket. Even for those young teachers lucky enough to secure full-time employment those who entered the profession post-2011 are on a much-reduced salary scale, with less attractive pension benefits that their older counterparts. Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) president Gerry Quinn said there was a “common but utterly incorrect perception” that all Irish teachers were in secure, full-time jobs. “In the second-level system, this bears no resemblance to what has become an increasingly bleak reality and a similar situation exists in institutes of technology. For several years teachers had been applying for ‘fragments of jobs’ with no guarantees they would still have positions the next year. These teachers experience income poverty, often struggling to make even the most modest of financial commitments.” Speaking to North West Express a Sligobased part-time school teacher said she found herself working long hours (without commensurate remuneration) and dealing with a lot of paperwork, while established teachers usually finished at about three o’clock every day.
