HERE is general agreement in the democratic world that the strength of a nation can be judged by the way it treats the most vulnerable in society. While we all hope and pray that things will improve over the coming years in this context a snapshot of our health services in Ireland in 2015 paints a sorry picture. Locally, we have the continuing debacle of dozens on trolleys in Castlebar and Sligo . . . and the HSE now admit that much of this is due to the backlog of people waiting to get into nursing homes. The numbers of people waiting for funding under the Nursing Home Support (Fair Deal) Scheme increased by over one hundred from mid-December to midJanuary and currently stands at approximately 1,200. We all dread having to go to hospital, don’t we? Then we have the injustice of so many people with serious conditions having to travel many miles to avail of essential service for cancer and other illnesses. This week we feature the story of Sligo woman who is pleading her case to Health Minister Leo Varadkar to allow her son ”die with dignity”. In Mayo a woman whose son had Down’s Syndrome has been refused a medical card for a fourth time. At the end of the day many of these problems have arisen due to a shortage of funds. Yet, it seems the government is still pushing ahead with its plans to grant free medical cards to ALL children under the age of six, without a means test. Many families are still seeking answers after the events at Portiuncula Hospital and the nation is still reeling after the revelations at Aras Attracta while awaiting reports from other similar institutions.
