HERE is general agreement in the democratic world that the strength of a nation can be judged by the way it treats the most vulnerable in society. While we all hope and pray that things will improve over the coming years in this context a snapshot of our health services in Ireland in 2015 paints a sorry picture. Locally, we have the continuing debacle of dozens on trolleys in Castlebar and Sligo . . . and the HSE now admit that much of this is due to the backlog of people waiting to get into nursing homes. The numbers of people waiting for funding under the Nursing Home Support (Fair Deal) Scheme increased by over one hundred from mid-December to midJanuary and currently stands at approximately 1,200. We all dread having to go to hospital, don’t we? Then we have the injustice of so many people with serious conditions having to travel many miles to avail of essential service for cancer and other illnesses. This week we feature the story of Sligo woman who is pleading her case to Health Minister Leo Varadkar to allow her son ”die with dignity”. In Mayo a woman whose son had Down’s Syndrome has been refused a medical card for a fourth time. At the end of the day many of these problems have arisen due to a shortage of funds. Yet, it seems the government is still pushing ahead with its plans to grant free medical cards to ALL children under the age of six, without a means test. Many families are still seeking answers after the events at Portiuncula Hospital and the nation is still reeling after the revelations at Aras Attracta while awaiting reports from other similar institutions. he Irish Cancer Society and Dell launch Daffodil Day 2015 in Mayo. Daffodil Day, supported by Dell, will take place in Mayo on Friday March 27th 2015. This year marks the 28th Daffodil Day, Ireland’s longest running and biggest fundraising day. The Society announced a growth in cancer incidence that is sure to have a direct impact on its services – increasing the need for the people in Mayo to support Daffodil Day so they can reach their fundraising target of €3.5 million for 2015. Speaking at the launch of Daffodil Day, John McCormack, Chief Executive Officer, Irish Cancer Society said, “Every family in Mayo is touched by cancer, and these new figures confirm that cancer rates are growing. As cancer is increasing so are our efforts to fight it. As the national cancer charity we
are working harder to ensure that every family in need of support in Mayo has access to our services. To meet the increased demand for help as more people get and survive cancer we need to raise even more money this year on Daffodil Day.” Funds raised on Daffodil Day by thousands of volunteers across Ireland go directly to fund the work of the Society across support, prevention, research and advocacy. Night Nursing is one service funded by Daffodil Day. Last year the Society was able to fulfil 96 per cent of requests for a night nurse. Seventy Five percent of cancer patients wish to die at home surrounded by family, yet only 25% get to do so. The Irish Cancer Society provides the only night time care service for cancer patients in their own homes. In 2014 the Society’s nurses provided 499
nights of care to 78 patients in Mayo and this service is fully funded by the people of Mayo who consistently support the work of the Society. Mr McCormack continued, “We won’t give up until every person affected by cancer in Mayo has the support they need and we need the support of everyone in Mayo to make this possible. We know our volunteers won’t give up, we know Dell – our lead partner – won’t give up and we need every person in Mayo to join us in this fight. We still have some way to go to fully support patients who will die from their cancer. We won’t give up until we reach that future without cancer – and I know the Irish public won’t either.” It’s vital that Daffodil Day reaches its ambitious fundraising target of €3.5 million in order to continue to
provide and expand this service and others. The Society and Dell, lead partner for Daffodil Day, are calling on the public to help support the campaign on Friday 27th March and ask people to volunteer, organise or donate on CallSave 1850 60 60 60 or visit www.cancer.ie/daffodilday. Also speaking at the launch, Liam Halpin, General Manager, Dell Ireland said, “Dell employs 2,300 people in Ireland and we have campuses in Cherrywood in Dublin, in Limerick and in Cork. Each and every one of these employees have joined the Daffodil Day volunteering army in one way or another and it’s been great to see the momentum across the three campuses grow over the years. This is our fifth year as lead partner of the Daffodil Day campaign. We’re looking forward to a great day of fundraising to ensure the continued services provided by the Irish Cancer Society to people around the country.” The Irish Cancer Society’s 28th Daffodil Day, supported by Dell, will take place in Mayo on Friday 27th March. Here is how you can support Daffodil Day 2015: • Visit www.cancer.ie/daffodilday or Callsave 1850 60 60 60 • Volunteer on Daffodil Day • Organise a Daffodil Day event in your community or workplace *based on cancer incidence figures from the National Cancer Registry from 20102012

DON’T LEAVE YOURSELF EXPOSED Local health service still in shambles SHRED IT FOR LESS with
Continued from front page Nobody is saying there is an easy answer to all of this. The HSE, after its predecessor (the Health Boards) is still a monolith of sorts, with major institutional problems embedded and, admittedly, a nightmare for those charged to manage and administer it. It’s not just a matter of finance either. But when we have now reached the stage that we all dread the prospect of having to avail of the state’s health services it is time for some radical changes.

Average Mayo three-bed semi rises 15.15% in 2014
T
he price of an average three-bed semi Mayo rose by 15.15% in 2014, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. The Real Estate Alliance
Average House Index concentrates on Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an accurate picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide.
The average three-bed semi detached house in Mayo now costs €190,000, with the market staying flat in Q4 from September to December, and houses now taking three weeks to sell, down from six weeks in June 2014. REA Olivia Needham in Mayo are predicting a rise of 5% in prices in 2015, following the ending of the uncertainty over the Central Bank’s mortgage deposit rules. Nationally, the average three-bed semi now costs €184,713, the latest REA survey has found – a rise of 2.63% on the Q4 figure of €179,981. While every county in the State showed an increase in three-bed semi prices, the market slowed down in the Dublin area between September and December 2014 (Q4) with one area registering a -6.67% drop in prices. While semis in Dublin recorded a 21.66% increase over the year, the biggest rise was in the commuter counties and large cities such as Cork and Galway. Property in what is now termed Tier Two rose by 26.24% from €157,824 to €199,235. And while the Dublin market slowed to just an 0.89% increase in Q4, and the
commuter counties rose by 3.42%, the biggest upswing came in the rest of the country (or Tier Three), which saw a rise of 3.92% – the first time that rural Ireland had surged ahead in the figures all year. “Our survey shows that in all areas of Dublin, parts of Cork City, Galway City, North Wicklow and Kildare, the price of the average semi detached house exceeds the Central Bank’s new threshold of €220,000 at which banks can lend 90% of the value,” said Real Estate Alliance CEO Philip Farrell. “However, other parts of Wicklow, Kildare, Louth and Meath all offer average housing under that limit for those looking to buy in the commuter belt with accessibility to Dublin.” The biggest change in buying habits in 2014 has been the return of the banks to the marketplace with the amount of cash transactions dropping from an average of 66% in December 13 to 44% in December 2014. Real Estate Alliance (REA) is Ireland’s leading property group of Chartered Surveyors with over 50 branches nationwide, comprising many of the country’s longestestablished auctioneers and estate agents.

áilte Ireland today met members of the Sligo tourism industry in the Clarion Hotel, Sligo, as part of a series of Fáilte Ireland briefings, with a focus on the Wild Atlantic Way. Over the
coming week additional workshops will take place along the Wild Atlantic Way route for members of the trade. Over its first year in existence, Fáilte Ireland has been working to further
develop the Wild Atlantic Way and has made significant progress to date. A signage plan has been implemented for the entire route and all the directional signage along the route has been in place since the end of May 2014. At the briefing Fiona Monaghan, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of the Wild Atlantic Way, provided an update on the 2014 progress of the project as well as highlighting plans for the future evolution of the initiative in 2015. Commenting on Fáilte Ireland’s plans for the year ahead, Ms Monaghan said “The year ahead, 2015, will see the roll out of photo points and branding at all 188 Discovery Points along the Wild Atlantic Way including the off shore islands. This branding and interpretation phase will give us a greater ability to tell the stories of the Wild Atlantic Way to visitors and encourage a more meaningful engagement with all those who travel in the region. With respect to County Sligo
the Mullaghmore signature point along with some 7 discovery and embarkation points have been identified for development to encourage visitors to stop, linger and engage a little longer with County Sligo’s vibrant heritage, culture and landscape.” In addition a coordinated marketing and selling programme for the WAW - in conjunction with Tourism Ireland - has been rolled out in all of the overseas markets. To date the reception has been very encouraging and the impact of the programme has been significant. Last year Fáilte Ireland invested €10 million rolling out the route which stretches from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal to Kinsale in County Cork and instantly the new attraction garnered significant interest overseas. This year, the national tourism authority will be upping the ante with a mixture of further development for the attraction and greater promotion to key overseas markets.

Will Gary Barlow sing in the Landmark?
G
ary Barlow, the The Take That front man, recently announced on his Twitter account that he will secretly perform at the nuptials of three of his biggest fans this year and has been deluged with requests to perform at weddings all over the world.
Barlow tweeted; ‘’In 2015 I want to sing at 3 weddings. The only deal is they have to be HUGE fans. And all you have to do is stalk me on here.’’ And Gary even revealed he’d be happy to keep his appearance under wraps until afterwards. He continued: ‘’I
won’t publish on here which weddings till after the event. All weddings have been chosen – but will it be an Irish shindig? Tracy Mallon and Mark Mahon have been campaigning for Barlow to perform at their wedding in the Landmark Hotel in
Carrick-on-Shannon, set to take place in July this year. Two of Tracy’s bridesmaids – her sister Laura and best friend Elaine O’Kane – heard about the singer’s offer and got the ball rolling. The couple, who live in Canada but are both from Longford, have garnered huge support online, and bookies believe the former X-Factor judge has a good chance of performing at the couple’s wedding. (How exciting would that be!) Campaigns have been ongoing all over social media and Boyle Sports is currently offering 3/1 that any of the three weddings chosen will be in Ireland. But their thump card has got to be their beautiful daughter Radha who has gone global on twitter pleading with Barlow to play at her parents Tracy and Mark’s wedding. So it’s all yet to be revealed. Does Tracey’s sister know? Or her Bridesmaid Elaine O’Kane? Or perhaps Ciaran Kelly of The Landmark Hotel? The one person who does know for sure is Gary Barlow. And the rest of us, well, we will all just have to wait and see! #tracysweddingcoulditbemagi c #getgarytoireland #GaryforLandmarkWedding
Families seek answers on Portiuncula maternity services
I
n the wake of a major investigation into the death of two babies in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, last year, other families are seeking answers on maternity services at the hospital. The investigation, which will also review five deliveries last year where there was evidence of oxygen deprivation, has led to more families coming forward with concerns over care received at the maternity unit at Portiuncula before 2014. One Loughrea couple, who lost two babies in 2008 and 2010, have appealed for the Portiuncula review to be extended to include their cases. It is understood that a number of other families in counties Galway and Roscommon are also
concerned over the quality of care received at the maternity unit. A spokesperson for the hospital group acknowledged the emerging concerns of other families in relation to maternity services prior to 2014 but could not say whether these families would be included in the Portiuncula investigation. “We are aware of other families emerging with concerns outside of 2014 and we want to engage with them and take on board their concerns,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that the terms of reference for the independent review remained under discussion but would be agreed later in the week. The Portiuncula review is expected to be completed within three months.

Seven-month-old foal found in shocking condition Source: ISPCA
I
T may have been highlighted elsewhere but the story of how a 7-month-old foal was found in Sligo last week in such an appalling condition deserves further mention to remind us of how cruel some of us can be to defenceless creatures. The unfortunate animal was found with extensive neck wounds and abandoned on waste-ground in Sligo town earlier this week.
Concerned members of the public spotted the foal and called the ISPCA on Monday of last week and inspector Karen Lyons found the young colt in a great deal of pain. Both sides of his neck had massive puncture wounds which were badly infected and he was clearly in an “extremely weakened state” the charity said. “He was just standing
listlessly on his own in the middle of a kind of car park, what was an old car park,” according to Lyons. “There was a rope hanging out of him and a head collar on him. He was very weak – he must have been in an awful lot of pain and he was a bit scared when we approached him but I don’t think he had the energy to go very far.” The foal, later named
Chance, was taken for veterinary treatment where it was found that the wounds on his neck, thought to be over a week old, were only centimetres from the vertebrae in his neck. It is hoped that the vertebrae will not become infected but he has a long road to recovery ahead of him now. Lyon’s said he is in good spirits and every day his wounds are improving. It’s unbelievable how quickly they heal once they get the right treatment. She said it is not known what caused the horrific injuries the foal sustained. It is possible an aggressive stallion attacked him or that something or someone punctured the colt’s neck. Unfortunately, little Chance was not micro-chipped and local enquiries have not revealed an owner. Lyons appealed to anyone in the area who recognises him to contact them in confidence on 1890 515 515. If his owner cannot be found, it is hoped Chance can be re-homed, once he is fully healed. “He has a long way to go but we hope that Chance will find a home,” Lyons said. “He’s a lovely little blue and white fella, he is very cute and he seems to have a good temperament”
Sadness at death of “community leader” Sean Hannick
T
here was widespread sadness in Killala and throughout the Northwest last week with the announcement of the death of Sean Hannick, renowned for his work in the development of his local area and a champion for development in the west generally. He was aged 71. The well-known industrialist
Anton McNulty
and businessman passed away on Friday, January 30th in the Galway Clinic and was, perhaps, best known as the Chairman of the Council for the West and instrumental in the establishment of the western Development Commission. A native of Killala, Mr Hannick was a tireless advocate for development in
the north Mayo village and was selected as Mayo Person of the Year in 1998. He was a member of the Council for the West since its formation in 1994, and became the organisation’s chairman in 2002. Paying to tribute to Mr Hannick, the Most Reverend Christopher Jones, Bishop of Elphin, and Bishops’ Representative on the Council of the West said at every level and in every role he held, ‘he made an enormous difference’. “He brought employment to Killala. He employed people in Killala himself. He was the driving force behind the development of the Killala Community Centre. “He fought for improved facilities and infrastructure in north Mayo, and then he broadened his campaigns to all of Co Mayo and to the west of Ireland in general. To Seán, the emphasis was always on progress and improvement – it would be impossible to list all of the many worthwhile issues and campaigns he supported down through the years. “Many people have reason to be very grateful to Seán for all he did, directly or indirectly. But he was never one to seek
the limelight or to chase accolades: Seán was a quiet, humble man, a great friend to all of us in Council for the West and someone we will miss greatly. He was a true champion of the west,” he said. Mr Hannick was one of the leading figures in the establishment of the Western Development Commission and to obtain Objective One status for the west. He was a member of the National Council of ISME (Irish Small and Medium Enterprises) and the Western Development Leader Company, and served for two terms on the Western Development Commission board. He was treasurer of Killala Community Council and a member of many other community development organisations, including extensive involvement in Killala GAA club. He is survived by his wife Deirdre; sons John, Rory, Conor and Marcus; grandchildren Sarianna, Farayah, and twins Órna and Seán; daughters-inlaw Neasa, Caroline and Yolanda; sister-in-law Margaret; brother-in-law Pat; relatives, neighbours and friends.

Rose of Tralee speaks of tragedy ARDNAREE TOOL & PLANT HIRE of cousin’s death
Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh sharing a selfie with students at Griffith College, Dublin.
R
ose of Tralee, Mayo native Maria Walsh spoke recently of the blackness in her life following the death of her cousin in a horrific road
accident. Maria lost her cousin, Teresa Molloy, a 19year-old student, over five years ago. Teresa and three of her student friends were killed
in the horrific crash near Ballindine in south Mayo in November, 2009. The girls were travelling back to Galway from a Christmas shopping trip
to Sligo. Maria said: "Experiencing the loss of a loved one at any time of year is difficult, but losing someone during the holiday season is unnecessary heartbreak." Maria was speaking as she lent her support to a campaign to get young drivers to "raise your foot". The campaign is aimed at getting young drivers to raise their foot off the accelerator pedal and slow down. Later, Maria was welcomed back to Griffith College, where she previously studied journalism. The current Rose has spent more time being interviewed than most - after becoming the first openly gay woman to win the competition. The 27-year-old posed for a selfie with students as she took part in a number of talks and media workshops on the Dublin 8 campus. Robbie Smyth, Deputy Head of the faculty, said: "Maria was a wonderful student and continues to be the perfect ambassador for the college."
Major UK interest in Mayo properties
M
ayo is attracting above average interest from UK property buyers trying to secure their dream homes in Ireland, according to Real Estate Alliance. The strength of sterling has seen enquiries about Irish property sales to UK-based purchasers increase significantly in the past two months, with REA Needham in Westport reporting a 25% increase in UK enquiries. A survey of REA members shows that enquiries from the UK have increased by 13% on average to agents outside of Dublin in the past two months. In fact, one REA agent in Bantry has reported a 50% rise in recent enquiries from the UK. There has been a corresponding 25% annual increase in enquiries about Real Estate Alliance properties listed on top UK site
rightmove.co.uk. Now Irish property vendors are being given the chance to cash in on this mini-boom by registering for the Alliance’s upcoming London Property Exhibition. REA are bringing thousands of properties to London, giving a host of UK buyers the chance to browse in comfort and talk to the experts on the ground. The exhibition takes place in the Millennium Gloucester Hotel and Conference Centre in central London on Saturday March 21. The exhibition will be a comprehensive one-stop shop for potential property purchasers with legal and financial experts joining a network of Real Estate Alliance agents from throughout Ireland, all with unique properties to show. “The average UK home now costs €236,635 whereas in Ireland it is close to €180,000,
and the strength of sterling is magnifying this,” said Olivia Needham. “UK buyer interest is manifesting itself differently to the existing Irish market in a number of ways, with big surges in interest in many undervalued rural counties and also scenic and coastal locations. “This presents many vendors with the opportunity of achieving better prices due to interest outside of the normal marketplace. “Rural properties in the UK cost an average of €67,000 more than urban properties – quite the opposite of the Irish market. “UK buyers are being priced out of rural properties in their own country, so for many their only chance of an ‘escape to the country’ is a move to our country. “We are also seeing a marked upsurge in UK interest in large properties worth over
€700,000 in commuter counties such as Meath and Kildare. “We are also seeing interest from UK investors who are priced out of their own market and feel that they have reached the top of their curve and are looking for capital growth and yield in Ireland.” Real Estate Alliance (REA) is Ireland’s leading property group of Chartered Surveyors with over 55 branches nationwide, comprising many of the country’s longestestablished auctioneers and estate agents. Further details on the REA London Property Exhibition, and a list of local agents, can be found on www.realestatealliance.ie or send an email to register for the event at info@realestatealliance.ie. Mother wants son to 'die with dignity'
H
ealth Minister Leo Varadkar has been under pressure of all sorts in recent weeks. A Sligo mother, living in Co Donegal, met the Health Minister last
week to ask him to allow her son die with dignity. Aisling Nibb’s five-year-old son, Oran, has mitochondrial disease, a rare genetic condition for which there is
no cure. Though both his parents are originally from Sligo he now lives with his family in Letterkenny. Órán has regular appointments at Temple Street Hospital and the Laura Lynn Children's Hospice both in Dublin, an eight-hour round trip from their home in Donegal. His mother Aisling and other parents of sick children in the Donegal area are lobbying for their children to have treatment in Belfast instead. On the fund-raising website that tells his story, it is explained that Órán "is unable to sit unsupported; he cannot crawl, walk, feed himself or communicate his needs". The family also set up a facebook page to update friends and fundraisers. Aisling described the journey to and from Dublin with her son - who has frequent seizures - as traumatic and degrading. She said her son’s “high needs” would be much better
served if Oran could use services in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, rather than spending his short life travelling up and down to Dublin. "My son is five years old. He deserves to die with dignity and to spend the time he has here happy and contented," she said, " and not being dragged from pillar to post and standing at the side of the road at 6 o'clock in the morning. "Our children are expected to endure (this journey) every single week of the year for the very short time they have on this earth…You wouldn’t do it to a dog." "If Oran has an appointment at, say, 9am in Temple Street for a neurology clinic, I have to wake him at 4am," she said. Aisling said she and her husband regularly have to stop to treat Oran on the side of the road while travelling to Dublin. "We have often stood at the side of the road trying to administer oxygen and an anti-seizure drug in what is essentially a ditch."

ominations for the 2015 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ (EOY) programme officially opened to entrepreneurs across the West this week as EY launched their nationwide search for Ireland’s leading entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurial talent from across the province attended the Connacht launch event held at the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway, to hear from previous EOY winner, Terry Fox (Cupprint) and former finalist George Mullan (SIS Group) on the advantages and challenges
of running a global business from the West coast of Ireland. Known globally as the most prestigious business accolade for entrepreneurs, the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ (EOY) Ireland programme has evolved over the past 17 years into a 9-month development programme for the best entrepreneurs across the island of Ireland. nominations from the general public. As part of the programme, this year’s 24 finalists will join a group of 120 entrepreneurs, all previous finalists and winners of EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™, for a week-long CEO Retreat to Germany. The intensive week will include an executive education series as well as workshops with the CEOs at the helm of Germany’s most successful start-ups and globally renowned indigenous companies. The awards programme is divided into three categories Emerging, Industry and International - with 8 finalists chosen per category. The 24 finalists will be selected by the independent panel of judges made up of former EOY winners. This year’s EOY programme brings with it a number of leadership changes. After serving as Partner-in-Charge of the EOY programme for the past 5 years, Frank O’Keeffe will be assuming a new position in the professional services firm as the Head of Assurance. He will be succeeded by EY’s Head of Tax Kevin McLoughlin and EY Director, Sean Duffy, who will fulfil the positions of EOY Partner Lead and EOY Programme Director
respectively. The long-standing Chairman of the judging panel, Padraig Ó Céidigh will be stepping down to oversee the EOY Alumni Board and steer the future direction of the EOY Alumni initiatives. He will be replaced by CPL’s Anne Heraty who won EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ in 2006. Urging entrepreneurs to put themselves forward as potential nominees, EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Partner Lead, Kevin McLoughlin, said: “To sustain the growth of the all-island economy, it is crucial for Ireland’s entrepreneurs to foster global ambitions and reach beyond the Irish and UK markets to sell their products and services. The 2015 programme has been designed to provide our 24 finalists with the tools and knowledge to enhance their growth strategies; while introducing them to an experienced community of peers to support them on this journey.” Individuals who wish to put themselves forward or nominate an entrepreneur with their consent, can fill out the online nomination form at www.eoy.ie or call the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ team for further information on 01 221 2250. The deadline for nominations is Friday 20 March 2015.

Desperate customer who stole pizza for his kid pays restaurant back 13 years later after making it
Mother and daughter used Ouija board to contact dead dog and are now fighting for their lives
A
desperate customer who stole pizza to feed his kid has paid the restaurant back 13 years later after making it as a successful businessman. Reddit user ‘morgan_freemum’ shared the incredible letter written by a guilt-ridden customer who used a cheque he knew would bounce to pay for a meal. The original meal cost $20, but he returned the money with interest at $54.39 as penance. Part of the letter reads: ‘Back in 2002 I bounced a cheque at your pizza shop.I was going through a very difficult time financially and was at the end of my rope. ‘I had no money and a hungry child at home.’He apologises and continues: ‘I have worked hard and built up a solid business over the last decade and feel it is my responsibility to remedy this situation.
I hope there are no hard feelings.’ The pizza shop owner has expressed his delight in a series of comments under his own post on Reddit.
One reads: ‘The guy didn’t have to do anything, this is a big showing of his character. To include interest was really generous.’
Mummy blogger ‘poisoned her own son to get sympathy from people online’
A mother and daughter are fighting for their lives following a mystery fire at their home after allegedly using a Ouija board to contact their dead dog. Margaret Carroll and Katrina Livingstone, who are in a critical condition, are reported by neighbours to have repeatedly tried to contact Molly. Molly was killed by Margaret’s husband, Paul, who drowned her in the bath and then claimed she had died as a result of another Ouija board session on Christmas Eve. His crime was discovered when he chopped the dog’s body into pieces and put it down a drain, blocking it. He pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and is due to be sentenced later this month. On Saturday, a fire started at Mrs Carroll and Miss Livingstone’s home in Consett, County Durham, and again a Ouija board is believed to have been involved. Neighbour Donna Sowerby said that she spoke to Miss Livingstone who told her that a Ouija board reading on Friday evening told her and her mother that they were going to die. At 8.45am on Saturday, emergency services were called to the house after a fire broke out.
A
woman accused of killing her 5-year-old son by feeding him salt through a stomach tube calmly ‘watched and waited’ for the poisoning to take effect, summoning help only after he began writhing and retching, a prosecutor said Tuesday. In her opening statement at the murder trial of Lacey Spears, Assistant District Attorney Doreen Lloyd said she researched, planned, carried out and tried to cover up the killing of her blond, blue-eyed son, Garnett-Paul. ‘It seems to go against nature,’ the prosecutor said. ‘But Lacey Spears is not like most people.’ She said Spears enjoyed the ‘attention and sympathy’ she received from having a sick child. Spears, of Scottsville, Kentucky, had documented Garnett’s declining health on social media. She wiped away a tear as the prosecutor spoke. Lacey Spears pictured (right) with her son, Garnett-Paul, who she is alleged to have killed
Mrs Carroll and Miss Livingstone, who have both been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, were both found in the back garden and are being treated for conditions unrelated to the fire. Mrs Sowerby, 30, said: ‘The fire was right the way through the property. It was horrible. The roof was right up. We could not see up the street because of the smoke. ‘There was a mini explosion and one of the firefighters was blown back.’ A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: ‘Two women, aged 60 and 37, were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham where they remain in a critical condition and under arrest for arson with intent to danger life. ‘We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.’ Police said no other dogs were in the properly at the time of the fire having being removed by the RSPCA last month.

A premier dead animal collection service P
roviding a fully-licensed, fast, efficient and humane dead animal collection service across the mid-west, Maloney & Matthews Animal Collection Ltd. operates the most modern knackery in Ireland, at Tubbercurry, County Sligo (just 5km from the Mayo border). We visited this state-of-the-art facility and got an insight into the history and current well-being of the business from co-founder Vincent Maloney. Maloney & Matthews Animal Collections Ltd. is the premier collector of dead and worn-out animals in the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim region. It is also the only licensed collectors of animals in this area (license number KN65).
Between them, Vincent Maloney and Jim Matthews boast over 45 years’ experience of collecting dead animals in the region. As the company is co-owned, with an owner from each Mayo and Sligo, they have an office in each county. With there being no other knackery in County Mayo, they are the recognised knackery for Mayo as well as Sligo and have been operating in this area for over thirty years. Operating a total of ten trucks, they guarantee a fast, efficient and professional service at all times. The fleet consists of one Scania articulated truck plus nine trucks for collecting animals (comprising one Volvo, one Iveco, four MANs and three Isuzus
- the newest addition being a 141 Isuzu). A brand new Manitou loadall has also been acquired this year. Trucks are based in Ballinrobe, Castlebar, Ballina, Claremorris, Tubbercurry, Sligo and Ballinamore and the fleet is maintained to the highest standards and can access all farm areas. Meanwhile, Maloney & Matthews’ staff members are trained in removing all fallen animals in a professional manner to ensure minimum fuss and disturbance to the farmer involved. One of the directors’ main aims is to provide farmers with a value-for-money, reliable service. If preferred, animals can also be dropped off at the stateof-the-art facility in Achonry, Tubbercurry, at a discounted rate - a cheaper alternative for farmers. The modern knackery facility in Achonry, Tubbercurry County Sligo benefits greatly from its central location. It is just six miles from Ballymote; nine from Charlestown; eleven from Ballaghadreen and Collooney roundabout; and 15 miles from Ballina, County Mayo and Boyle, County Roscommon. Here, Department of Agriculture vets carry out daily inspections on fallen animals and all paper work is completed to ensure that animals are taken off

the farmer’s system. The facility – which also includes offices and wash areas – has the first air filtering system of its kind in Ireland to ensure that all odours and smells are removed from the air. A same-day service is provided and lowest prices guaranteed. “All our drivers are qualified and would have good experience of farms. We also pride ourselves on providing a very ‘local’ service. We would have a driver located in every big town in Mayo and Sligo and they would have great local knowledge of the farms and the people in their respective areas. “This means that the farmer is
dealing with somebody he knows, as opposed to a stranger, which we feel is important with something as sensitive as removing dead animals from his farm. As well as the office numbers in Sligo and Mayo, we give out the local drivers’ numbers and the farmer can talk directly to the driver who is going to be calling to his farm to collect the animal. We try to look after everybody as best as we can and we have the height of respect for farmers. “We are very busy at the moment and the phones are ringing all the time. The business is going well and we are confident that things will continue in a similar vein.”

Home Energy Tips That Save You Money E A
nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. s the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment.
Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energysaving equivalent - which will use
around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also
try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water. Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows. Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day. Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing machines, opt for a more energy efficient appliance. An EU Energy Label should be displayed (A to G Scale) on appliances for sale in order to help you make a choice, "A" being the
most efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy. Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy. Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply. Insulation Upgrading loft and, where possible, cavity insulation, will save energy in your home by reducing energy losses through the building fabric.

Eddi Reader at The Hawkswell Theatre - Sat 14 Feb, 8pm €20/18conc./9 u18s
The Model 1st March @ 6pm
W
ith a career spanning over 3 decades, Eddi Reader has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. Though first brought into the limelight as front woman for Fairground Attraction - who’s #1 single, Perfect and parent album, First of a Million Kisses, both topped the British charts, it was Eddi’s subsequent solo albums that signaled her ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them all very much her own. In particular, The Songs of Robert Burns (2003) was a timeless interpretation showcasing the poems of Scotland’s national bard and gained her an MBE for outstanding contributions to the arts. What sets Eddi apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance and ability not only to move the listener, but to connect her experience to that of her audience. From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi Reader extinguishes the preordained boundaries of genre, bringing joyous life to all forms of song. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute and pragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary British music. Eddi’s new and 10th solo venture, Vagabond (Feb 2014) is a captivating, deeply personal, yet universal sounding collection of songs engaging her full stylistic repertoire. Produced by Eddi herself, it was recorded in her hometown of Glasgow with a cast of well chosen musicians and long-term musical collaborators including: John Douglas (Trashcan Sinatras), Alan Kelly, Ian Carr, Ewen Vernal, Roy Dodds (Fairground Attraction), John McCusker and Boo Hewerdine. Vagabond is a passionate, reflective and whimsical journey through family and inspired musical and poetic heroes that reconfirms Eddi’s intuitive ability to transform any song or genre into her own.

at The Hawkswell Theatre Sat 28 Feb, 8pm / €15/12conc by Michael Cooney Michael Cooney's riotous farce has all the ingredients for a night of hilarity and fun. Eric Swan (aided by his Uncle George and unbeknown to his wife, Linda) has pocketed thousands of euros through fraudulent welfare claims. When Norman Bassett (the lodger) opens the door to Mr Jenkins, the Department Inspector, all sorts of mayhem follows — as does the undertaker, bereavement counsellor, psychiatrist, Norman's fiancee, a corpse, the onimous Ms Cooper and a rather rebellious washing machine! The play is staged by St Farnans Drama group and directed by Jacinta Gormley. This performance follows the resounding success of 2012 staging of Sam Cree's Cupid Wore Skirts and 2013 Separate Beds. Charity night in aid of St. Josephs NS Ballytivnan. For tickets please call: St. Joseph’s School, Ballytivnan, Sligo. Phone No. 071 9142453 Mobile :087 7498752.
SWEET CHARITY The Hawkswell Theatre Tues 17 - Sat 21 Feb, 8pm €17/14conc . Sweet Charity tells the story of dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine, an eternal optimist who is forever unlucky in love. Her trusting nature and naiveté makes her prey for a succession of opportunistic men. The razorsharp script lifts the veil on the exquisite agony of living on the under-side of life. This is a comedy with an edge. Directed by Aine Gilmore, with music direction by David Mc Evoy and choreography by Sarah Middleton, Sligo Musical Society promises to entertain you with a highly-theatrical, fast-paced and entertaining show.
THE FRESH PRINCE OF BELAMERE at The Hawkswell Theatre Fri 13 Feb, 8pm / €20 Top Irish stand-up and TV comic Neil Delamere is coming to the Hawk's Well with his brand new tour, The Fresh Prince of Delamere. Described by The Scotsman as “a master”, Delamere is renowned for his onstage banter and quick-witted, well-observed yarns and previous tours and international appearances – including the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival – have been a sell-out. Expect The Fresh Prince of Delamere to deliver the same powerhouse performance from the star of RTÉ’s The Panel, 2nd Republic, BBC’s The Blame Game, Fighting Talk and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow.

Overeating Linked to Memory Loss, Mental Decline
O
LDER people who consume a diet very high in calories may be increasing their risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the memory loss and mental-function problems that sometimes precede Alzheimer’s disease. In a new study of more than 1,200 people in their 70s and 80s, Mayo Clinic researchers found that men and women who consumed at least 2,143 calories per day had more than double the odds of having MCI compared with those who consumed 1,526 calories per
day or less. Federal health officials recommend that women over age 50 consume between 1,600 and 2,200 calories per day, depending on how physically active they are, and that men in the same age group aim for between 2,000 and 2,800 calories. But the guidelines emphasize the importance of balancing calorie intake and physical activity in order to maintain a healthy weight, not specific calorie amounts. This emphasis on calorie balance points to a key limitation of
the new study: Although Geda and his colleagues took into account extenuating factors such as body mass index, genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease, and medical history (including heart disease, strokes, and diabetes), they had no data on exercise and physical activity. Future studies will need to examine both sides of the calorie equation, Geda says. The study participants, all of whom hailed from Olmsted County, Minn., filled out a detailed questionnaire about their typical diet over the previous year. They also underwent a series of memory and cognitive tests. None had dementia, but the researchers determined from the test results that 163 had MCI. MCI is “the gray zone between normal aging and dementia,” Geda says. “People with MCI are not demented [but] they are forgetful a little more than expected for their age.” This forgetfulness goes beyond senior moments (such as misplacing car keys), and might include forgetting airplane flights and other important appointments, he adds. Although it remains to be proven, there is a plausible scientific explanation for how overeating might erode mental function. Consuming a high-calorie diet may spur production of harmful, oxygen-containing molecules, and these so-called oxidative radicals may accumulate in cells and cause neurons to break down, Geda says.

Unbelievable reception for ‘Silent Moves’ in Ballina
13. Some of the cast of Silent Moves with Michelle Mulherin TD and Geraldine Parsons celebrate the launch of Silent Moves exhibition (by Aideen Barry working with Western Care’s Ridgepool Training Centre and Scannán Technologies) in Ballina Arts Centre recently. Silent Moves exhibition runs until the 28th February, admission is free. Photo: Sara English.
A
large and enthusiastic crowd turned out at Ballina Arts Centre earlier this month for the launch of Silent Moves, an exhibition of film pieces made by Western Care’s Ridgepool Training Centre and Scannán Technologies groups, under the direction of artist and filmmaker Aideen Barry. The exhibition and film were made under the IGNITE disability arts commissioning scheme, which offered projects in Mayo, Galway and Cork the opportunity to get funding up the €55,000 for high quality, ambitious disability arts projects. The exhibition features documentary footage from the making of the film, as well as clips from the film, and old silent movies which have inspired the film, and is on show until Saturday 28th February. The 30-minute film – which was shot entirely in Ballina
and carries with it a strong message about disability – will also be shown in the auditorium of the Arts Centre on Wednesday 11th, Friday 13th, Wednesday 18th and Friday 20th February, with four screenings each night (at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm). Admission is free but booking is advised. Throughout the month, there will also be a schools’ screenings programme and opportunities for community groups to attend specially-arranged screenings and visits to the exhibition. Sean Walsh, Director of Ballina Arts Centre, said: “We are all really delighted with the finished film. The project was a hugely successful and enjoyable for all involved. We have been working with these two groups for a number of years now, and this represents the apex of the relationship. The IGNITE scheme was all about giving opportunities for groups of

disabled artists to make work of a high calibre, and Silent Moves really is that.” The film uses mime, music and movement with greenscreen technology and the latest animation techniques, and was inspired by the classic silent movies of the 1930s – the era of Buster Keaton, Clara Bow and Charlie Chaplin. and was shot on location around

Ballina. Silent Moves was one of three IGNITE commissions which represent the largest ever investment in Ireland’s arts and disability sector. IGNITE is a new platform designed to generate Ireland’s most ambitious showcasing of talent from people with disabilities, led by international and Irish artists and performers with disabilities, with projects taking place in 2014 and 2015 in Galway, Mayo and Cork. These commissions each represent an investment of up to €60,000. The initiative will conclude with a tour of one of the resulting works to all three counties (and beyond) in 2015. For further information on Ignite see www.irelandignite.ie IGNITE is managed by a unique partnership involving the Arts Council, Arts & Disability Ireland (ADI), Cork City Council, Galway City and County Councils and Mayo County Council.
