HE future of many local festivals received a boost last week with the announcement that funding of €564,000 has been approved by Bord Failte for regional festivals and events. A significant portion of the funding is being directed towards activities along the Wild Atlantic Way. Sligo will receive a total of €43,500, with Sligo Live topping the bill at €20,000, and Sligo Choral Festival, Tread Softly 2015 and the Food and Culture Festival each receiving €3,000. An Post Tour and Yeats International Summer School will each receive €2,500. A larger number of Mayo events have been approved for support, though the amounts were more modest. On top of the list is Ballina Salmon Festival with a grant of €5,000, while four other Ballina projects – the Food Fleadh, French Mayo Festival, Samhain Amhann and the Quay Regatta each receiving €2,500. Among the other prominent Mayo events to receive support are: Mayo International Choral Festival (€3,000), Westport Arts Festival (€3,000), Westport Music Festival (€2,500), Achill Half Marathon (€2,500) and Achill Island Battle for the Lake €2,500). A total of €40,500 was approved for Mayo events. The Donegal International Rally will receive €8,000.(A full listing of grants for events in Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal is provided on page 2). The average grant nationwide is 3,000 and a total of 187 local events are being supported. 105 of these are along the Wild Atlantic Way and it is noticeable that counties like Roscommon, Leitrim and others in the midlands do not feature much in the listings. 3,330 children await orthodontics in Galway and Mayo

A

frightening statistic, but there are 3,330 children on waiting lists for orthodontic treatment in Galway and Mayo at present. 1,294 of those children have been waiting for between a year and two years and over 450 have been waiting over two years for treatment. The figures were raised in the Seanad recently by Connemara Sinn Fein Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh, who challenged Minister Kathleen Lynch on the issue. Senator O’Clochartaigh says there has been little progress on this problem in the last two years and the government is failing to address the underlying issues of lack of resources to provide children with vital health services such as this.

Civil bills for repossessions mounting across west AN indication of the level of distress among mortgage-holders has been highlighted in recent weeks with banks increasing pressure on the many thousands in arrears, many over two years. Apart from the tragic consequences for many families this is likely to become a thorny pre-election issue over the coming months. New figures show that banks lodged over 200 civil bills for repossession of homes in Co Mayo last year. Figures released to the Irish Times indicates that over 8,000 applications were made across the country last year to repossess homes. 206 civil bills were lodged in Mayo, with 37 repossession orders granted. In Roscommon, 198 applications for repossession were lodged by the banks

with 22 orders granted. Sligo had 121 bills lodged, with 6 orders granted, while in Galway, 421 civil bills were lodged for repossession with 9 granted. As of January 1st this year, over 7,100 civil bills for repossession were lodged by banks across the State’s 26 circuit courts – including 412 in Galway. Many are predicting the situation will get much worse over the coming months.

tudents from St. Colman's College in Claremorris got to experience political sparring at the highest level today in Dublin Castle. Along with schools from all over Ireland, they were debating the hot topic of renewable energy targets in the eighth annual Model Council of the European Union. The St. Colman's team role-played Slovakia in an intense and well informed discussion among 27

other schools. Minister of State for European Affairs, Dara Murphy T.D, and Tim Hayes, of the European Commission Representation in Ireland opened the debate, while Green Party Leader, Eamon Ryan chaired. RTE's Duncan Stewart announced the winning and runner-up teams (see above). With fracking, pylons and windmills still prominent issues, renewable energy is a

topic that today's young people will have to take seriously. Tim Hayes says: "We already have renewable energy targets of 20% by 2020; the purpose of this debate is to get our young people thinking about the issue. Decisions about their futures are made in Dublin, Brussels and further afield, and it's critical that our youth understand what is going on in this area and how decisions

are arrived at.” The event, which is organised by the European Commission Representation in Ireland, took place in The Printworks Building in Dublin Castle. 28 schools from across Ireland represented the 28 EU Member States. Manorhamilton girl scoops senior Chef award A Manorhamilton cake designer and chef has capped off a phenomenal 12 months by winning the Senior Chef of the Year at Chef Ireland in the RDS, Dublin last week as well as securing an amazing double gold medal for her incredible Steam Punk Wedding Cake creation.

Karen Keaney, owner of the Roses and Bows Cakery in North Leitrim, said it had been an unbelievable 11 months since she entered her first competition in March 2014. “Since then I have won six golds and two best in show awards and now this. It has been an amazing 11 months

for me,” she admitted. Her success is even more phenomenal when you consider the fact that less than three years ago, Karen saw her unique talent for cake design as more of a hobby. However, when her unique christening cake design for her own daughter led to cake requests from family and friends, Roses and Bows Cakery was born. Since then Karen has seen not only her business grow, but also her portfolio of well earned awards as well. Her double gold winning Steam Punk Wedding Cake features an amazing multilayer tribute to all things steampunk and even complete with actual steam - courtesy of strategically placed dry ice. The cake itself is a mix of sugar craft and modelling chocolate, boasting handpainted detailing which took over 40 hours for Karen to complete. “It was an idea I had in my head for ages and I think that is what I love about competitions like this, it is a chance for me to go crazy with a design, to make something so unusual and fabulous without having to worry about cost or client briefs,” explains Karen. While judges usually award

a gold medal to category winners, Karen’s creation was of such quality that it secured an almost unheard of two gold medals. “I couldn’t believe it, it was such a shock,” she admits, however one further surprise was in store for Karen. After she left the three day event last week, Karen discovered that she had also secured the coveted Senior Chef of the Year title. “I hadn’t a clue that I had won it. I had already left the RDS after three days of competing and my colleague Gabriel McSharry rang me to tell me I had won.” On top of her competitions and running her own business, Karen has also found time to complete online tutorials in cake decorating and to teach other classes passing on her skills to a new generation of cake designers. “It is pretty hectic, especially as I have young children as well, but I do love what I do and I know how lucky I am to have found something that I can do for a living that I just enjoy,” she says.If you would like to see some of Karen’s amazing creations see https://www.facebook.com/p ages/Roses-and-bows-cakery or check out her website www.rosesandbowscakery.com

Association of Childhood Professionals rally attended by over 100 Sligo delegates

Deputy Brendan Smith with Veronica Muldowney, Alisha McElhone, Louise Kilbane & Coleen Loftus

O

n Tuesday the 17th of February over 100 Early Childhood Educators travelled from Sligo to Dublin, to attend the Childcare Rally, where they joined their colleagues from around the country with an estimated crowd of over 2500 in attendance. Several services around the county of Sligo closed for the day and many other services allowed staff to attend on the day. The rally was organised by Association of Childhood Professionals Ireland with

support from, branches around the country, including the Sligo branch. The rally was addressed on the day by several speakers including Marian Quinn Chairperson of Association childhood Ireland. Deputy Robert Troy who rallied the crowd on the day. Also speaking on the day was Professor Noirin Hayes, Senator Catherine Zappone. The purpose of the rally is to highlight the importance of early childhood education and care and the vital role played by childhood professionals in supporting the children and

families in the foundation stage of development. To date this foundation stage has mainly been seen within the domain of the family rather than the societal domain and this thinking needs to change. The foundation stage must be recognised within the life long continuum of care and education framework. One of the key messages of this rally is that we, employers and employees, are subsidising, by virtue of our low wages, (and the voluntary time required for meeting with parents, admin, maintenance etc) the early childhood education and care system in Ireland and that we can no longer afford to do this so we are demanding that the government steps in and

recognises and accepts their responsibility to provide sufficient funding to adequately resource all areas of high quality provision. The crowd were entertained by music and singers too. Louise Kilbane Chairperson of ACP Sligo was among the delegation who attended a meeting in Leinster House whom presented to Minister Reilly the petition of over 29,000 signatures and were afforded the opportunity to discuss with Minister Reilly the difficulties facing the Early Childhood Sector, including pay scales and investment into the sector. Sligo Delegates were supported on the day by Senator Marc MacSharry, Senator Imelda Henry and Deputy Michael Colreavy.

Parents ‘murdered 11-month-old son then blamed their dog for his death’ the injuries were inflicted on purpose and both of the parents asked how long they would get in prison for what happened to Oliver. Andrew Smith QC told the court: ‘The prosecution contends that the considered opinions of experts from different medical specialities leads to the safe conclusion in this case that Oliver had been subjected to deliberately inflicted injuries immediately

Oliver Sargent died in 2012

T

he parents of a young boy blamed their dog for killing their son, a murder trial has been told. Oliver Sargent died from head injuries four days after collapsing at his home in Telford, Shropshire. Doctors discovered a 8.5cm fracture on his skull, bleeding on the brain and bleeding to his

left eye. They also found historic injuries to his ribs and collarbone. Parents Paul and Ashlea Thomas, who got married after Oliver’s death, were charged with murder and during their trial they claimed that their dog Rocco could have knocked him over or sat on him. Prosecutors, however, believe

before his collapse and the calling of the emergency services. ‘Possible explanations of an underlying medical condition or an unknown accident can be excluded. ‘(The pathologist) Dr Hunt concluded there were two separate episodes of injury being inflicted on Oliver without any plausible explanation being offered. The case, which is expected to last five weeks, continues.

Ever wondered what dying feels like? This guy has experienced it, twice...

O

ne of the oldest and most considered questions of the human race is: ‘What happens to you when you die?’ Well, one guy who has technically been dead TWICE (once from a motorcycle accident, once from an overdose on painkillers), recently gave us a bit of insight into this question – or at least what it feels like when you are dead. During a Reddit AMA the lucky guy gave us a bit of info on what it felt like to be ‘dead’ for a few minutes. He said he experienced ‘just black emptiness. No thoughts, no consciousness, nothing’. The man also likened it to taking a ‘short, dreamless nap’, and added that he only realised he had momentarily died because the paramedics were obliged to tell him. He also disputed the experiences of people who say they had visions between dying and being brought back to life. ‘I think that in their cases, their minds were still active. What they experienced was just a sort of dream,’ he said. Despite the distinctly un-cheery telling of nearly losing his life, the man says ‘the whole point of this was to try to make people understand that death is nothing to fear!’. Since the accidents the writer said he tries to ‘focus a lot more on just trying to live in the moment and have fun’. He also had a cheeky retort to someone who asked what he would do if he finds himself in that situation again. ‘Hit the re-spawn button!’ he quipped.

People who just read Facebook (and don’t post) become unhappy

People who sit browsing Facebook posts and looking at other people’s profiles all day become envious, unhappy and miserable. This is how most people use the site, University of Michigan researchers warn. ‘Facebook undermines how people feel,’ lead researcher Ethan Kross said. The researchers found that people who repeatedly browse the site ‘passively’ – ie reading other people’s posts – felt their wellbeing declining day after day. People who post on Facebook and chat with others (ie using the site ‘actively’) don’t show the same decline in happiness levels, the researchers say. The researchers conducted studies in the lab, and asked 80 volunteers to report how they felt after either posting and chatting on Facebook, or reading other people’s posts.‘These findings help illuminate how using Facebook undermines the way people feel,’ said Professor Kross. ‘They also provide people with a blueprint for how to reduce the negative effects that interacting with this technology may have on the way people feel.’ Kross’s team found that interacting with people offline helped to ‘cure’ some of the negative feelings caused by Facebook.

Surgeon plans first human head transplant ‘within two years’ Doctors believe they will be able to perform a head transplant within two years. No, this isn’t April Fool’s Day come early (it’s still February), it’s an Italian surgeon who says he thinks he can carry out the procedure to give people a new, healthy body. It could help patients with spinal cord injuries, muscle-wasting diseases, or people whose bodies are riddled with cancer. Dr Sergio Canavero says techniques are out there, they just need to be put together, according to the Daily Mail. The procedure would involve two patients – someone who is brain dead, and one of the above mentioned patients. Their heads would then be removed and the healthy head would go on the healthy body with the spinal cords being fused by a glue. Once it’s all stitched up, the patient would be put in a coma for four weeks to stop their head falling off. He is going to announce plans at a conference later this year and, if he gets backing, the first operation will take place in 2017. Any volunteers? William Matthews, chairman of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons, said: ‘I embrace the concept of spinal fusion and I think there are a lot of areas that a head transplant could be used but I disagree with Canavero on the timing. ‘He thinks it’s ready, I think it’s far into the future.’ But Harry Goldsmith, a California doctor who succesfully performed a spinal cord operation that allowed someone to walk again, said: ‘I don’t believe it will ever happen.’

Ireland will be world's fastest-growing dairy producer – Minister I

reland will be the world's fastestgrowing dairy producer over the next five years, with at least 10,000 jobs being created across the country following the abolition of milk quota, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney has told the Dáil. No other country is planning for over 15 per cent growth in 2015 and continued expansion and investment year on year up to 2020, he said. The Minister added that he intends to establish a forum for key stakeholders in the dairy sector to monitor progress and consider the challenges in face in the new era post quotas. "The focus of this group will be strategic and forward-looking. It will provide for relevant stakeholders to consider challenges, such as maintaining and improving milk quality, maintaining high standards of animal health and welfare, improving productivity at farm level, mitigating the impact of price volatility, improving access to credit and a range of other factors impacting on the sector."

Minister Coveney said that he will be making a further announcement on this forum shortly. While traditional markets such as the UK and the EU will remain critically important for Irish dairy sector exports, Minister Coveney said that significant market opportunities also exist for the sector in new markets outside the EU in the medium-to-long term, highlighting the Chinese market in particular. "Ireland's dairy offering resonates with Chinese and other third-market consumers who place safety, traceability and sustainability at the core of their value proposition. Companies based in Ireland exported almost €400m worth of dairy produce to China in 2014, which is almost a quadrupling of the figure compared to 2010," he said. Potential difficulties in 2015 In regard to potential difficulties in 2015 as a result of a softening of the market and an inevitable superlevy fine for Irish farmers, Minister Coveney told the Dáil that he has already secured flexibility from the European

Commission for farmers to pay the superlvy fine on a phased basis and that Commissioner Hogan has now proposed some flexibility for the processor side also, which is being examined. Minister Coveney said he has ongoing contact with the Minister for Finance to ensure that taxation policy reflects the Government's commitment to agriculture; that new and existing agri-taxation measures support investment to enhance competitiveness, including assisting new entrants and young farmers; that he meets with the CEOs of the banks on credit issues for the sector on a regular basis; and that he has prioritised measures for the dairy sector in the Rural Development Plan for the next seven years, including provision of almost €400 million for the new Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS). In relation to price volatility in future dairy markets, Minister Coveney said that "all stakeholders in the sector need to be cognisant of the reality that there will be occasions, as there have been in recent years, where various factors align to provide the sector with real fluctuations in price". "We need only look to the experience during the second half of 2014 where global supply imbalances which were also exacerbated for a time by a ban on agrifood produce to Russia, for more recent examples of how challenges can emerge over time and overnight. Those involved in the dairy sector, including banks, cooperatives and farmers, need to work together to mitigate the impact of these peaks and troughs," he said. He added that the medium-term outlook for dairy markets continues to be very bright, with growing global demand expected to support prices in the years ahead, but that it is clear there will be continuing volatility around this positive

trend. "The current strong hope, pending further market developments, is that Irish producers have escaped the worst of the current market slowdown as it coincided with the low phase of the Irish production cycle, and recent market analysis appears to be bearing this out." A united approach critical "The very broad consensus among stakeholders that quota abolition is a tremendously positive development for the Irish dairy sector is remarkable," the Minister said. "There is a shared vision, of growth built on the competitive advantage conferred by a natural, grass-based production system, on a strong international reputation for high standards of quality and food safety, and on the kind of resilience and ingenuity that has seen our dairy co-ops build global brands and reputations. "It is critically important that farmers, processors and Government remain united in their commitment to this vision, and that the pressures of expansion do not result in any reduction in the quality or safety of what we produce, the environmental sustainability of our production and processing systems, or the health and welfare of our animals. "There will be challenges, of course, and while market sentiment has taken a positive turn in recent weeks, it is as well to remember that price volatility, both in terms of inputs and outputs, is likely to be a continuing feature of global markets into the future. The impact of input and output price volatility, currency fluctuations, weather events and geopolitical conflict will have to be carefully managed along the way. Complacency is not an option, but the medium-to-long-term outlook is positive." The Minister's comments were included in his opening address to the Dáil at statements on the dairy sector recently.

The new X-Series utility vehicle raises the bar on ground clearance too, thanks to an impressive 10.4” travel height, allowing the vehicle to glide over lumps and bumps. Independent and Height adjustable front and rear suspension also ensures the correct vehicle height, depending on load, allowing for a safe and comfortable ride no matter how heavy the load. The fully independent suspension system offers incredible ride comfort and quality. Driving is believing! Kubota’s latest utility vehicle builds on the range’s already impressive load and towing capability with an increased maximum capacity of one tonne, including a 15.2 cubic foot cargo bed. Loading and unloading is now far simpler too, with the addition of a hydraulic lift, allowing heavy loads to be dumped in seconds. The release of this latest model is a big step forward in the development of diesel-powered utility vehicles, and we’ve made a number of key changes to really

step up the levels of performance and comfort. The NEW X900 is completely redesigned from the ground up. The X900 can now be specked with even more equipment such as alloy wheels, mud guards and many cabin options. Operator comfort is at the forefront of the X900s design. The X900 now features a digital dash with readings for fuel level, hours worked, miles travelled, and machine road speed. The X900 also features a new dash mounted handbrake for easier application. The transmission selector is now in line for easier shifting and a glove box is standard for carrying those important smaller items. COFORD report on the mobilisation of roundwood to meet growing demands for wood fuel and sawn timber in Ireland was today launched by Minister of State Tom Hayes. The COFORD wood mobilisation group comprises growers and processors, Coillte, Teagasc, the Northern Ireland Forest Service, and officials from the Forest Service. The report analyses the full range of issues impacting on the level of wood mobilisation, including current and projected roundwood supply/demand dynamics and measures, forest rotation length, forest roads and roading, provision of harvest information to growers, road haulage and transport technology, training, environmental designations and research and development. It addresses these and other topics through 40 specific recommendations. "What we are dealing with here is the wood mobilisation challenge: to sustainably double harvests from forests, both state and private, from the current three million cubic metres per annum to over six million cubic metres by the end of the coming decade," Minister Hayes said. "The report I am launching today is very timely in the context of my announcement last week of the new Forestry Programme, which will run up the end of 2020. It contains a number of measures related to wood mobilisation, including support for the construction of 700km of new forest roads, or 125km

per year, from now to the end of 2020." Mike Glennon, the chairman of the COFORD wood mobilisation group, said: "It is essential that we follow up on all of the recommendations in the report in order to address an already very tight sawlog supply situation. The all-Ireland roundwood production forecast does show increasing levels of wood coming to market in the years ahead. But we need to invest and work to make these projections happen, so that the processing sector can secure its raw material at a sustainable level." COFORD – the Programme of Competitive Forestry Research for Development (formerly National Council for Forest Research and Development) – is based in the Research Division of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The report is available for download from the COFORD website.

FA President Eddie Downey said he had a positive meeting with senior executives from Tesco in the UK this week and discussed several issues of importance to Irish beef farmers. Eddie Downey said Tesco reported that beef sales have rebounded strongly in the last 12 months, particularly for steak and round cuts. The message from Tesco is that they anticipate 2015 to be a strong year of demand for beef. IFA raised the specification issues with

Farmers Can Cut Farm Plastics Recycling Costs By A Third

Brendan Morrin – JFC, Thomas Dyer – Ballymote, Sligo – Prize winner and Stephen Crampton – IFFPG

I

FFPG, the national farm plastics recycling scheme, teamed up with Tuam’s JFC Manufacturing at its recycling bring-centres this year to highlight to farmers the benefits of storing their farm plastics waste clean and dry. The promotion involved making farmers aware that they can reduce their recycling costs by up to a third by ensuring that farm plastics

removed from silage is stored in a clean and dry manner. Farmers were encouraged to enter a free draw at bring-centres, with a prize of a JFC Tidywrap Recycling Bin on offer for the winner in each county. Massive progress has been made in recent years regarding farm plastics recycling in Ireland. IFFPG currently recycles approximately 25,000 tonnes

of material annually. This represents a national recycling rate in excess of 70%, among the highest in the EU. The material is collected from farmers at over 200 bring-centres, which are held nationwide in the period April to July each year. For most Irish farmers, farm plastics recycling has become a mainstream activity, which they engage in either every year or every other year. However, due to our climate and current management practices a portion of what is collected at bringcentres is contamination in the form of rainwater. This moisture can increase the weight of the plastic by up to one third and unnecessarily adds to recycling costs of farmers at bringcentres. Farmers can minimise their recycling charges by simply ensuring that they put in place a system in the farmyard that results in silage wraps being stored in a dry location immediately after being removed from bales. One option in this regard is JFC’s Tidywrap Recycling Bin, which was recently launched on the Irish market (RRP €279). The bin allows farmers to store their farm plastics in a dry, clean and easy to use manner and then avail of cost savings at the bring-centre. For more information on farm plastics recycling visit www.farmplastics.ie

Key dates for GLAS

– from now until 2016 With the opening of GLAS this week, we look at the key dates farmers who are thinking of joining the scheme need to be aware of. As soon as possible… Farmers need to decide as soon as possible whether the scheme is workable for them. They should look and determine what Tier the scheme categories them as. Consider the options that would allow you and your farm to achieve the maximum payment under the scheme such as: wildbird cover; minimum tillage; low emission slurry spreading; etc. Contact your planner and get them to submit your initial interest in the scheme. You will receive, within days, a text code that you must respond ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to within 24 hours to confirm or reject your intentions to partake in the scheme. When your planner visits, go through the scheme and the options available to you and decide the best options for

you and your farm. When you have decided the actions you want to take, the planner must submit and plan and a soil nutrient plan. May 15 Pay your money and submit your plan before May 15. This is the deadline for submission of plans. September 2015 It will be September before you hear whether your application has been successful and indications are that some payment will be made to farmers in 2015. If you are not successful this time, your application will sit and wait until next year when the next tranche is opened. 2016 It’s unclear still if some catch crops will have to be planted this year, but most crops won’t have to go into the ground until spring 2016. New hedges should be planted before March 1, 2016 and most of the work that you sign up to do will have to be started in 2016.

SHOWBAND STORIES By Catherine Gilmartin

A night of Nostalgia at the Ballina Arts Centre on Friday the 27th March 8pm. The year was 1975. The 31st of July, sometime after 2.30am, to be precise and it's now 40 years since the terrible tragedy that befell the Miami Showband as they returned home from a gig in Banbridge Co. Down. After the gig the band had packed up their van and one of the band members, drummer Ray Millar, headed off in his own car to Antrim to stay the night with family. The other five boarded the band's van and started off on the trip home to Dublin. Three young musicians were hunted down and murdered that fateful night: Fran O'Toole, Tony Geraghty and Brian McCoy. Stephen Travers and Des Lee survived, and although seriously wounded, they lived to tell the world of that dreadful night when their own lives and the music scene in Ireland changed forever. Kevin Myers of the Irish Independent wrote that "The Miami Showband massacre was one of the most depraved atrocities of the Troubles" The Irish National Showband Archive, in association with The Ballina Salmon Festival presents "SHOWBAND STORIES" featuring our very own "Jack Ruane

Showband". Hosted by Miami Showband massacre survivor, Stephen Travers and with special Guest, Des Lee, who also survived that terrible event, this Show features the story of the famous Jack Ruane Showband from Ballina. Well know local musicians, Judd Ruane, Jack Ruane, Eugene McCaffrey & P.J. Duffy will be there to recount days of old and stories of the Showband days in Ireland. The initial idea for this Show was muted by local Ballina music promoter, Liam Brennan, following on from a phone conversation he had with Stephen Travers. Stephen had called Liam to discuss the possibility of getting together the surviving Showband members of yesteryear having been himself commissioned to gather and archive as much information, stories and anecdotal materials as possible for posterity. Liam suggested the Jack Ruane Showband in Ballina and hence the foundations were laid. "I've known the Ruane family all my life as my parents were great friends of the late Jack Ruane snr." In fact, Kieran Carroll (R.I.P), a brother in law of Jack's was my Dad's best man and they all remained great friends in their life times.

Liam then approached Paul Burke, chairman of the Ballina Festival with the idea, and in consultation with Sean Walsh at the Ballina Arts Centre, Judd Ruane, Jack Ruane, Eugene McCaffrey, whom are all past members of the Jack Ruane Showband, the plans reached fruition fairly rapidly after that. The well know local publican and musician, P.J. Duffy, a past member of the Michael O'Callaghan Band, based in Cork, was also invited on board. P.J. would have performed with Jack Ruane too on many occasions in the past, especially and the brilliant "Jazz Sessions" at the Riverboat Inn at the Quay in Ballina. Liam says, "All in all this makes for a very interesting and nostalgic night for anyone that loves music, the Showband Days in Ireland and especially those of us who appreciate the talents and the joy that these great musicians brought to dance goers throughout Ireland" and as they say... " The real story of the Showbands can only be told by those who lived it" Tickets (€15) available at the Festival office (O'Rahilly Street) and at Ballina Arts Centre. Tickets are limited so to avoid disappointment get yours NOW!

Following the huge success of his show here last March, we are delighted to announce that Kieran Goss will be returning to the Hawk’s Well in March 2015. “One man, one guitar and a voice sent express mail from Heaven”... Time Out Magazine Long hailed as one of Ireland’s leading songwriters and performers, Kieran Goss’s music has won him fans across the globe. But if his songs have made him a star, his live shows have made him a legend. Live on stage is where Kieran Goss really shines. “I’ve toured with Kieran and watched him perform many times. I’ve seen him win the hearts of everyone in the room, not just with his great songs and instinctive musicality, but with his warmth and humour. It’s the performance of an artist at the top of his game, delivered with intelligence and integrity... Kieran Goss is one of Ireland’s national treasures.” Rodney Crowell Kieran will perform the first half of the show solo and will be joined on stage in the second half by harmony singer Annie Kinsella. As Time Out Magazine wrote of their performance together: “Individually, they are both gifted singers but when they sing together, magic happens… the harmonies, the chemistry… just sublime.” Time Out Magazine Sat 28 March, 8pm / €25/12.50 u18s / @ The Hawkswell Theatre

Busy March/April at Ballina Arts Centre Dermot Seymour: Stooriewhoorie: Selected Paintings Dermot Seymour one of Irelands leading artists will be exhibiting his work at Ballina Arts Centre throughout March and April. He has been described as "a social realist, exploring the anxiety, bewilderment and absurdity of the situation in Northern Ireland and representing it with definite imagery but in an oblique and obscure way". His social realist approach towards Northern Irish politics frequently involves a juxtaposition of images within the Irish landscape, particularly livestock, and religious and military symbols. Dermot Seymour was born in Belfast in 1956 and received a BA in Art and Design from the University of Ulster in 1978. He is a member of Aosdána. The official opening is Friday 13th March at 8pm and it runs until Saturday 2nd May. Admission free. ‘An Evening in Mayo’ with Michael Longley Ballina Arts Centre is delighted to present poet Michael Longley in this special reading of some of his ‘Mayo poems’, on Friday 10th March, at 8pm. Michael Longley was described by Seamus Heaney as ‘a keeper of the artistic estate, a custodian of griefs and wonders’. He is a central figure in the contemporary Irish poetic landscape and has created a body of work which ensures his importance in the continued evolution of that landscape. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a recipient of the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and the Wilfred Owen Award. He has won the Whitbread Prize, the TS Eliot Prize, the Hawthornden Prize, the Irish Times

Irish Literature Prize for Poetry and the Librex Montale Prize. For over 40 years, Longley has been regular visitor to west County Mayo. In that time, he has written many poems set in the county. The evening will be introduced by Fr. Enda McDonagh, retired professor of Moral Theology at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. Tickets: €15 / €12. Booking advised. Professor Tim - Cloonacool Players Ballina Arts Centre is delighted to host this excellent piece of theatre set in the 1920s in rural Ireland, on Saturday, 14th March at 8pm. ‘Professor Tim’ is a romantic comedy that has all the ingredients to entertain an audience. A handsome young man, Hugh O'Cahan is in dire financial straits and has to sell the family home. Greedy neighbours the Kilroys, who always have an eye for a bargain, want to buy O’Cahan’s house and match their son to O'Cahan's sweetheart, Peggy Scally while they’re at it. And Peggy's mother is all for her marrying into security with the Kilroys. A play filled with snobbery deceit and loyalty…and in the middle of it all Professor Tim. Vagabond or Philosopher? In conjunction with Ballina Order of Malta, the Cloonacool Players take a break from the circuit to bring this Romantic Comedy to Ballina Arts Centre for one night only. Tickets: €12/€10. Booking advised. Play On - Phoenix Players Ballina Arts Centre welcomes back Phoenix Players on Saturday, 21st March, at 8pm. A theatre group try desperately to put on a play amid all kinds of maddening interference from its author who keeps revising the script. On opening night any-

thing that can go wrong does go wrong, with some hilarious results. The Phoenix Players was first formed in 1945 and, apart from a few lapses, have been active participants on the festival circuit ever since. The group pride themselves in drawing their cast and crew from Tubbercurry and its hinterland. After 70 years in existence the group are proud to still be “playing on”. Tickets €12/10 Booking Advised

him to help him out. What ensues is a tangled web of lies, door slamming and frantic running and racing between the two homes. You’ll have to stay on your toes to keep up with the antics of these characters who will have you laughing out loud throughout the performance. And of course the twist at the end is the cherry on top of a wonderful, funny play. Tickets: €12/€10. Booking Essential.

Lurky! Lurky! Performed by Fitzgerald & Stapleton Ballina Arts Centre welcomes back Fitzgerald & Stapleton to the stage on Thursday 26th March, 8pm. Lurky! Lurky! explores the relationship between gender, the body and society. Performing naked and for the first time combining live film editing, live dance performance and live DJ scratching, this new choreographed work is a continuation on from the company’s praised previous controversial sell out successes. Praised by The Sunday Times as ‘cutting-edge theatre that challenges audiences’ LURKY! LURKY! is no exception with stories of sexual assault, domestic violence, eating disorders, the porn industry and a re-reading of art history’s treatment of ‘the nude’ told through film, dance, spoken word and song. Contains sexual references and nudity. Suitable for 16 years and older. Tickets: €15/€12 Booking advised.

The Man from Moogaga Aindreas de Staic is back at Ballina Arts Centre on Friday 24th April, at 8pm. Football, music and mayhem collide in this comic tale of jigs, reels, raggle taggle and growing up in rural west of Ireland. The show focuses on the life and adventures of a young man from the town of Moogaga, a reclusive "ceólán" who eventually becomes a small-town hero! Despite having a natural talent for music the young man has only one goal, to play Gaelic football for his town, and he prioritises this over developing his musical

All a Dream This piece of theatre hits the stage of Ballina Arts Centre on Thursday 9th April, at 8pm. Drawing on the work of Samuel Beckett this is a tailoring of excerpts from the trilogy of novels (Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnameable) combined with the full text of the prose piece, From An Abandoned Work with some shorter excerpts from a couple of other sources including Endgame and Waiting for Godot. The piece presents the classical lugubrious Beckettian tramp in his ragged attire trapped in a seeming netherworld awaiting the end of his existence as he makes an attempt to relate the story of three days of his life. Tickets: €12/ €10 Booking advised. Caught in the Net performed by Ballina Dramatic Society Ballina welcome back Ballina Dramatic Society on Wed 15th, Thurs 16th, Fri 17th, & Sat 18th, April, at 8pm. This is a hilarious comedy that tells the story of John Smith, a taxi driver and a bigamist who is in danger of being found out. 18 years has passed and living between Wimbledon and Streatham is causing John angst as his son from one marriage has been in contact on the internet with his daughter from the other marriage. They are determined to meet and John is at pains to prevent this from happening. He engages his friend and lodger Stanley who has over the years covered for

skills. However, having neither the skill nor the physique to make the team, and frustrated by life in Moogaga, he decides to travel across Europe and America in the hope that he will find a town like Moogaga that will accept him. He travels far and wide all the time acquiring new musical skills yet at all time driven by the goal to become stronger and play football. In a onehorse town he finds acceptance and love as he learns to play new rhythms but trouble and strife soon follow too. Eventually, The Man from Moogaga returns home to find his hometown in the football final and desperately in need of something to help them win the match. Can The Man from Moogaga embrace his musical talents in time to inspire his team to win the cup? Tickets: €15/€12 Booking Advised Ballina Arts Centre is open from 10am – 6pm Monday to Saturday. Detox your Liver

T

he liver is one of the most important organs that help the natural detoxification process within the body. Human bodies need healthy livers to fight against the environmental toxins. The liver also helps in healing the

immune system and is an important part of digestion. The liver prepares glycogen, which can be converted into glucose by the body in times of need. It can store quantities of glycogen enough for up to 24

The liver flush can be described as a regimen of light exercise supported with an intake of herbal teas and the liver flush mixture. The liver flush mixture is a mixture of freshly squeezed citrus and lemon or lime juices, squeezed garlic and a small amount of ginger root juice, added with one tablespoon of olive oil. A natural food diet has to be consumed for the rest of the day. This regimen should be taken for at least ten days. The liver cleansing formula should be taken for at least two weeks. Milk thistle is a natural herb that has been known to have strengthening and healing powers over the liver. It is an antioxidant and can protect the liver from radical damage. The herb is available in tablet form and in major natural foods stores. Milk thistle can be consumed after perform-
