HE future of many local festivals received a boost last week with the announcement that funding of €564,000 has been approved by Bord Failte for regional festivals and events. A significant portion of the funding is being directed towards activities along the Wild Atlantic Way. Sligo will receive a total of €43,500, with Sligo Live topping the bill at €20,000, and Sligo Choral Festival, Tread Softly 2015 and the Food and Culture Festival each receiving €3,000. An Post Tour and Yeats International Summer School will each receive €2,500. A larger number of Mayo events have been approved for support, though the amounts were more modest. On top of the list is Ballina Salmon Festival with a grant of €5,000, while four other Ballina projects – the Food Fleadh, French Mayo Festival, Samhain Amhann and the Quay Regatta each receiving €2,500. Among the other prominent Mayo events to receive support are: Mayo International Choral Festival (€3,000), Westport Arts Festival (€3,000), Westport Music Festival (€2,500), Achill Half Marathon (€2,500) and Achill Island Battle for the Lake €2,500). A total of €40,500 was approved for Mayo events. The Donegal International Rally will receive €8,000.(A full listing of grants for events in Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal is provided on page 2). The average grant nationwide is 3,000 and a total of 187 local events are being supported. 105 of these are along the Wild Atlantic Way and it is noticeable that counties like Roscommon, Leitrim and others in the midlands do not feature much in the listings.
