s our local politicians prepare to battle it out once again for the electorate’s preferences comes the revelation that the job of a local councillor, intended to be a part-time position, paid an average of almost €30,000 last year – a combination of salary, allowances, expenses and fees according to recent reports in national media. All of this brings into focus the part-time nature of job – most of the local councillors received the payments in addition to remuneration for their day jobs - as some are, in fact, making a full-time living out of what was intended to be a part-time role. These issues have been highlighted at local level many times by this newspaper and notably by Ballina’s local councillor, Gerry Ginty, who has always felt that councillors should not be paid for their services. A North-West Express investigation in 2010 revealed that in 2009 expenses in Co. Sligo alone reached a staggering €1,239,835, with Mayo County councillors topping the expenses payments in Connaught with €1.27m paid out. It was also noticeable that members of political parties received higher expenses payments than Independents. The recent report reveals that county and city councillors in Ireland have received more than €52m in payments between them over the past two years. In fact, the highest earning councillor in the country received payments totalling €145,000 after acting as the council’s mayor in 2012 and 2013. Also, 11 local politicians received payments totalling more than €100,000 each over the same period. Figures show that Fine Gael councillors were the top earners, averaging €30,731 in pay and expenses. Labour representatives received an average of €29,254 last year, followed by Fianna Fail (€27,303) and Sinn Fein (€24,396). Continued on Page 4

I
rishTV will broadcast across the UK, Ireland and Europe on Sky Channel 191, Freesat 400, Eircom’s eVision 191 and in the US on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and is also available on all free-toair boxes and on www.irishtv.com. “Irish rural life is unique, with its own cultures, traditions and events. At the heart of these events are
people, and wherever people gather, we’ll be there,” said Pierce O’Reilly, Irish TV CEO, who founded the station with his wife Mairead Ni Mhaoilchiarain. “We are creating a new platform for Ireland to talk to the world, with the added advantage of enabling advertisers within Ireland to talk to rural Ireland – both through the county
programmes and our range of specialised offerings such as agriculture, food, fashion and music. “We have a host of original programming such as Cooking with Treyvaud with Killarney chef and YouTube sensation Paul Treyvaud who is set to become a huge hit with his unconventional approach. “Grass Roots is the first 32county agriculture programme
and will be hugely based around the small family farm. “The Golf Show travels Ireland featuring a different golf club every week, while Storytime is a simple, engaging and educational daily production aimed at 6-10 year olds. “We will also have Fashion, a comedy drama, an innovative new classical music show and a search for a new traditional music star among others – not forgetting our huge concentration on country and Irish music.” Three of IrishTV’s new County Matters presenters were unveiled at the launch – Rachel Lally (Laois), Geraldine O’Callaghan (Dublin) and Ian McDonnell (London). "I think the entire country was waiting for this to happen. In Laois alone there are so many stories in every corner of the county and people are so proud and passionate to tell them to me,” said Rachel. The station began broadcasting with a two-hour live launch party from Westport (Thurs May 1 810pm) featuring stars of country and Irish music including Tommy Fleming, Sean Keane and Matt Molloy as well as showcasing a host of new IrishTV countrywide presenters.

Failte Ireland funding for four Leitrim festivals
F
our popular Leitrim festivals have received Fáilte Ireland funding for 2014 events. The John McGahern Festival was awarded the highest amount of €2,000 for this year’s international seminar which runs next week, from May 16-18 in Carrick-on-Shannon and Aughawillan.
Ballinamore Family Festival, August 10-17 and the Phase One Music Festival, Carrick-onShannon, an electronic music and cultural festival, which was held over the Easter weekend each year, received a grant of €1,000. The very popular Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo has been awarded €750 for this
year’s traditional music festival, July 19-26. The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring announced the funding for 175 festival events last weekend of over €537,000 which was approved by Fáilte Ireland. Minister Ring said that last year regional festivals were a great success, adding that he wanted to build on from the legacy of The Gathering to ensure that 2014 is even
more successful. “The funding announced will allow local communities to broaden their appeal to overseas visitors who will be able to experience everything from culture and sport, to festivals and fun,” said Minister Ring. Fáilte Ireland research indicates that in 2011 there were 10,836 people in paid employment in festivals. Additionally, 48,692 people around Ireland were engaged with
festivals in Ireland on a voluntary basis. Locally, The Boyle Arts Festival and O’Carolan Harp Festival, the Percy French International Festival also received funding. The funding is great news for local festivals, to help towards the huge cost of running local events. A huge number of volunteers spend a lot of time, money and effort keeping these historic and new festivals alive and successful each year.

Wild Atlantic Way and Donegal to feature on top travel blog Dave Bouskill and Debra Corbeil
8
00,000 people in Canada and elsewhere around the world are set to read all about Donegal and the Wild Atlantic Way. Award-winning Canadian travel bloggers Dave Bouskill and Debra Corbeil – whose blog is called The Planet D – arrived in Ireland recently on the inaugural Aer Lingus Toronto to Dublin flight, as guests of Tourism Ireland. Married for over 15 years, Dave and Debra travel the world, showcasing their realtime journey and broadcasting their stories and experiences through their writing, photos, video and engaging social media. Often referred to as ‘Canada’s Adventure Couple’, their blog is considered to be one of the top travel blogs in the world, with
an audience of almost 800,000 across their own website and social media platforms. Tourism Ireland in Toronto invited Dave and Debra to spend almost two weeks here, to experience our newest visitor experience, the Wild Atlantic Way – and inspire their 800,000 readers and followers to come and discover it for themselves. The bloggers arrived in Donegal on Thursday (24 April) and stayed at Solis Lough Eske Castle in Donegal town and then at Arnolds in Dunfanaghy. Their exploration of the Wild Atlantic Way took them to the Slieve League Cliffs; they also visited Studio Donegal in Kilcar, the Dunfanaghy Workhouse, Glenveagh National Park, Fanad Head and Doe Castle, at Sheephaven Bay.
The significant (almost +70%) increase in airlines seats between Canada and Ireland this summer presents new and exciting opportunities to position the island of Ireland as a year-round destination for Canadian travellers, according to Tourism Ireland. Jayne Shackleford, Tourism Ireland’s manager in Canada, said: “Dave and Debra’s Planet D blog is hugely popular, so their visit is a fantastic opportunity to create a major impression on their 800,000 online followers, as they explore the Wild Atlantic Way and then share their experiences. They have already posted lots of great photos and details of their visit online – inspiring their readers to come and discover this part of Ireland
for themselves. Blogs and social media are recognised as strong influencers for prospective holidaymakers and we regularly work with them in promoting the island of Ireland. “With a significant increase in airline seats between Canada and Ireland, Tourism Ireland believes this is a market of considerable potential for growth in 2014 and beyond. We have a busy programme of promotions happening right throughout the year; our message is that it has never been easier for Canadians to get to the island of Ireland. We promise our visitors an experience that will be unique, full of engagement and great fun.” The Planet D bloggers are some of the first international media to travel the entire length of the Wild Atlantic Way since it was officially launched earlier this year. As well as writing on their blog, Dave and Debra will be tweeting about their time here (@theplanetd) using the hashtags #WildAtlanticWay and #PlanetDIreland; and posting regularly to their Facebook page. Tourism Ireland undertakes a busy publicity programme around the world each year to raise the profile of the destination – and media visits to Ireland are a key element of that programme. In 2013, there were over 1,400 media visits to the island of Ireland, which helped to generate articles and broadcasts around the globe worth about €50 million in equivalent advertising value.
Part-time work paying €30,000 per year Continued from front page While most councillors will claim that the payments are justified there is an issue over the number of conferences attended by some councillors. There is a feeling that some “full-tine” representatives use conferences to supplement their income. Back in 2010 Independent Dromore West councillor Michael Clarke (who had claimed just €12,033.63 in expenses in 2009) told North-west Express he believed there was a profit being made from these conferences and they are used by some
councillors to cover their other personal travel expenses . . . “I couldn’t justify such expense when I can’t get €300 for windows for an old person”. The same report revealed that FF Councillor Jude Devins of Sligo County Council received €70,706 in expenses in ’09, the highest received in the county. Councillors who sit on regional authorities, assemblies, education and training boards, third level institutions and the like, are also paid expenses. Some are paid fees for conducting interviews and records show that one
councillor received more than €25,000 in 2012 and 2013 for this function. Many councillors would claim they are targeted unfairly when it comes to revelations on payments and it is true that all councillors should not be tarred with the same brush. The issue is further complicated by the fact that payments made by some bodies to nominated councillors as expenses are not disclosed. Greater overall transparency would help to clear up the many uncertainties over this thorny issue.
Donegal is poorest county in Ireland - CSO
D
onegal is the poorest county in Ireland according to figures from the Central Statistics Office. Donegal has the lowest figure of disposable income per person, with the average person having just under €16,000 in annual disposable income. Those living in Leitrim are calculated to have €17,604 which although is higher than many neighbouring counties around the region is still well below the national average of €19,055. Donegal had €15,897, Longford €17,158, Cavan €16,741 and Roscommon had
€16,392 in 2011. Sligo was the only county in the region to have a higher disposable income compared to Leitrim at €18,211. The border counties were the lowest earning region , with average disposable income of €16,894, nearly 11% lower than
the average. As expected Dublin is the richest county in Ireland – with over €2,000 more disposable income per head than the national average. Disposable income is defined as earnings plus social welfare payments minus tax and social insurance contributions. Last week the Central Statistics Office report which reveals figures for 2011 said that counties with primary income – job earnings, rental income and dividends exceeding disposable income had the highest employment rates.

ISPCC’S Anti-bullying Toolkit
A
s a result of amassing a vast experience of and examining the area of bullying, the ISPCC know that bullying has the potential to be an active issue in all schools. It can have an incalculably detrimental impact on a young person's life, self-worth and selfesteem. It is often a factor that can lead to a child becoming withdrawn, depressed, anxious and insecure. In desperation, some young people consider suicide. The ISPCCC has worked on developing
our new 'Shield my School' anti-bullying toolkit. The toolkit is a self-assessment guide schools can use to audit and revise their anti-bullying policies and procedures. The ISPCC decided to create this toolkit with the intention of offering assistance to schools that wanted to proactively address the issue. A substantial amount of resources were designated to process more than twenty years of research in this area and the findings were used in the creation of the
toolkit. This work of the ISPCC has emphasized the issue of bullying as an interminable and critical issue in Irish society which can often be complicated and a strenuous subject to deal with. We are committed to highlighting and tackling the issue with this initiative as part of a vital campaign to combat bullying. As the Department of Education is establishing their specifications for positive anti-bullying policies, we are encouraging all schools to proactively address this by using the toolkit in the development and maintenance of their own policies. The toolkit is not a method of denouncing or scrutinizing any school's method of tackling the issue of bullying. Instead we encourage schools to view it as an opportunity to reflect on and revise anti-bullying policies and procedures. Using the toolkit as a method to increase the effectiveness with which we combat this issue and conclusively work towards the curtailment of the occurrences of bullying in our school system. The toolkit is readily available to all schools in many formats. It can be downloaded directly from our website www.ispcc.ie/shieldmyschool. Also if any school wishes for further details or guidance regarding the toolkit, please contact Fiona Jennings at the ISPCC Castlebar office on 094 90 2524.

allina Town Council were delighted on a sunny May Day to officially open the new playground at the Tom Ruane park on the Sligo Road, Ballina. The Park was crowded with children making full use of the many facilities in such a loved recreational area on the banks of the River Moy. Adults and children were entertained for the afternoon by Ballina Community Radio, Moy Samba Band and Cillian Rodgers. Mayo Arts Squad were responsible for the wooden
animals on display around the playground which gave a very live theme to the evening at the park. Off course the ice cream van was a very welcome guest for all on the children on this very warm evening. The new playground has been attractively designed to accommodate all needs and it is hoped that it will continue to be a hub of play and social interaction while also providing for both active and passive recreation.

Máire Garvey - Dip in the nip had ARDNAREE TOOL & PLANT HIRE pyschic influence If you want to take part in one of this year’s Dips, you can get more information here Tel: 086-401 6047 Email: info@dipinthenip.eu Web: www.dipinthenip.eu
M
OST people, particularly from the West and North West, would be familiar with Máire Garvey as the brains behind Dip in the Nip, the annual skinny dip in aid of cancer charities, which is now nationwide, with events scheduled across five consecutive Sundays all over Ireland in June of this year. But there is much more to this enigmatic Donegal native (of Mayo parentage) than most realise and like many personalities we feature on these pages Máire was prepared to speak candidly to us about the many demons in her life and the struggles to cope with highs and lows that appear to be so much part of the human condition. Born in Co. Donegal in 1960, she now lives in Lecanvey, near Westport, having spent a number of years in Sligo, during which time the Dip in the Nip concept was conceived. Her sole companion on a daily basis is her little terrier Flash (no plaudits for guessing what inspired a name like that!). On the educational front Máire attended the Royal & Prior Comprehensive School in Raphoe, Co. Donegal. As we will later learn much of her subsequent education was achieved as a mature student. She has Diplomas for Marketing and Direct Marketing. She has a BA in Philosophy & Theology from Milltown Institute of Philosophy & Theology, and a research MA in Philosophy (Alcoholism and Virtue Ethics). Her varied career started with a job as secretary and she can remember being taught on an old upright typewriter. In one of her first jobs she recalled being impressed that they had a telex machine. The secretarial jobs came as result of doing a secretarial course as most girls had been advised to do at the time, though Máire had to stifle her personal dream of going to art college. She worked for a number of years, also, in advertising before moving into fundraising, where she worked on some major campaigns, most memorably
heading up the Trócaire/2FM 24-Hour Fast. After some years she decided to fulfil an ambition and went to college, opting to study Philosophy & Theology as a mature student. She really doesn’t know why she chose these subjects but enjoyed college so much she decided to stay on and do an MA. During her first year of the MA, she edited the college magazine, Horizon, which she had been involved in reviving two years previously. During the period, however, Máire struggled to maintain sobriety and suffered many debilitating bouts of depression. Though she is now sober for 21 years she has continued to experience highs and lows, but during all this time had never associated her feelings with depression. She simply thought of herself as worthless and useless, a fraud and a waste of space, somebody who was incapable of making a valuable contribution to any job she undertook. It was only when a good friend whose judgement she valued suggested she might be depressed that something clicked in her brain. When she eventually visited her doctor and outlined her anxiety, sense of worthlessness, being overwhelmed by simple tasks, lack of interest in life and the desire for isolation and oblivion, the reality finally unfolded – she was depressed. Máire was diagnosed last year as bi-polar(2) and is very open about her condition. In so many ways the revelation is a relief. She is taking medication and undergoing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The latter she finds wonderful as she has learned to recognise the red flags and is learning to manage the depression herself. Very often it’s a matter of learning to manage the highs – to calm down. She is happy that she has started to face up to what’s wrong with her and is getting the appropriate help. The idea of the Dip in the Nip came to Máire during a period of unemployment some year
ago; she was wondering what direction to take next. A friend suggested a visit to a psychic, and though sceptical, she figured she had nothing to lose. What the psychic said to her has never left her: ‘I see you and a large group of women, naked, in a large body of water’. Her first reaction – that’ll never happen! And then she thought that it would be a brilliant way to raise money for breast cancer. And so the Dip in the Nip was born – and it was born in earnest after an interview with the late, great Gerry Ryan, who gets the credit for naming it. Máire intended the Dip in the Nip to be a one-off – after all, she was faced with the task of finding full-time employment for herself - but the event seemed to capture something in the public consciousness, and it took off. Now in its’ sixth year, there are Dips for women, Dips for men and Dips for couples, and there will be a total of 5 Dips throughout the month of June in different locations around the country. (All locations are kept secret, even from Dippers, until 24 hours beforehand, to ensure privacy, a key factor in the success of the Dips). It all started in 2009. She had no idea what the reaction would be. Initially, many women appeared to be sceptical and spoke in terms of “beached whales” when the concept of skinny-dipping was introduced. It was planned to have it at Rosses Point but the proximity to the golf course put a damper on this. The final verdict was Lissadell and eventually (thanks, perhaps, to the RTE exposure) 180 brave women turned up, bared all and faced the North Atlantic; of this number just 25 were from Sligo; many who supported the idea said they weren’t prepared to participate if it was in their own back yard. The first Dip raised €56,000 for the Irish Cancer Society. After the first year in Sligo the project took wings as a fundraiser. But the concept had a deeper, more important influence. It gave something to people, as most of the participants had never done anything like it before. It provided a sense of joy and liberation, particularly for those with body image issues. “It makes us realise our bodies are wonderful; too often we abuse them and don’t see the beauty. In the ocean everybody is equal. Proud bellies, mastectomy scars, cellulite, we’re all there. Skinny-dipping is the ultimate in life affirmation, so the Dip in the Nip lets us celebrate life in all its beauty. Many of the participants had experienced cancer - either their own or with somebody close. Some had lost loved ones and, indeed, some dippers have died since doing their own dip. Some even
joined while in treatment .” Six years later, Máire’s “naked” ambition has grown into a nationwide phenomenon with events in five locations throughout Ireland. The locations and beneficiaries this year are as follows: • Galway, 1st June: Hand in Hand Children’s Cancer Charity • Dublin, 8th June: ARC Cancer Support Centre • Cork, 15th June: Cork Dragons Breast Cancer Survivors and Marymount Hospice • Sligo, 29th June: SHOUT (Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit Trust). • Meath, 7th September: North East Cancer Education and Research Trust (This Dip had been originally scheduled for 22nd June. Despite being susceptible to depression Máire is a competent public speaker, having accidentally discovered a talent for it when doing MC for a Liam Lawton concert, one of his first, in the Chapel in Maynooth back in the 80s. She has since spoken at many functions, and her delivery attracts comments such as ‘motivating’ and ‘inspirational’. She is also a member of Toastmasters, and needs no prompting to get up on her hind legs and speak when asked to. Máire lives just five minutes from the beach and swims all year round. To relax she likes to read novels and listens to music. Currently, she is reading a wonderful book, “Stoner” by John Williams, first published in 1965, a simple story about an ordinary person who has never really achieved anything. She likes classical music and opera and has a particular love for Ennio Morricone and Karl Jenkins. The Dip in the Nip is the world’s first skinny dip for charity and has raised nearly €300,000 to date. Máire would love to see 200 dippers at each venue this year. In addition to Dips for women, there are now Dips for men and Dips for couples. It is not a nudist or naturalist event, so the beaches are chosen (strange as it sounds) with privacy in mind. While Máire is coming to terms with her own demons and is finding a path to inner peace she admits she has a bit to go yet. Her openness and honesty has to be inspirational to everybody and cancer-sufferers can be comforted by the fact they are being supported by someone who really cares. Many who may have thought that the skinny-dip idea was freakish initially are now glad they did it as it has transformed their lives. After our interview last week I was convinced that it is inspirational ideas from people like Máire Garvey that really make a difference in today’s world.

Chartered Accountans Society 3rd Annual Charity 5k run
Chartered Accountants Ireland, North West Society organising committee
C
hartered Accountants Northwest Society hosted their 3rd charity 5k run/walk in Doorly Park, Sligo on the Saturday 12th April 2014. Chartered Accountants Northwest Society is a district society of Chartered Accountants Ireland and represents over 500 Chartered Accountant members in the Northwest. District Societies throughout the country hosted various charity events on the 12th April 2014 in aid of numerous charities throughout the country. The Northwest society had the pleasure of Pat Costello CEO of Chartered Accountants Ireland attending the Northwest event. This years 5k run/walk was extremely successful with over two hundred participants taking part in aid of Sligo Cancer Support Services. The Cancer Support Services provide a place of
peace and hope for cancer sufferers and their families. Testimonials from users of the centre describe the services as extremely beneficial for during and after treatment and encourage sufferers and their families to use the service during this very difficult time. Preparations for the event were underway from early Saturday morning in Doorly park and registrations took place in ROM Sligo Fitness centre, one of the main sponsors for the event. On the day the abilities of participants varied from runners, joggers to walkers, overall making it a very enjoyable event for all involved. Prizes were presented to the first male (Raymond Byrne), first female (Gemma Reddin), First Child (Anthony Maher) and First Buggy (Dr. Zak Johnson) with prizes sponsored by local businesses
Seven Menswear, Aisling Leydon Make up Artist, Liber Bookshop and Mothercare. The atmosphere on the day was exceptional benefited by the sounds of LEMON&LIME Entertainment, the weather and the scenic route around Doorly Park. Participants arrived at the finish line to enjoyed sponsored refreshments from local businesses Glencar Water, Good4u and Fitfuel. Chartered Accountants Northwest Society would like to thank and congratulate everyone who took part in the event. They would also like to sincerely thank all their sponsors, Peter Rynn, Sligo Atheletics Club, the Red Cross and all their volunteers who helped out on the day. Due to the generous
donations from all participants Chartered Accountants Northwest Society will present a cheque in excess of two thousand euro to Sligo Cancer Support Services. Chartered Accountants Northwest Society hope to return next year for an even bigger and better event and hope to continue to see lots of familiar faces. Check out participant’s times and pictures from the day on facebook: Chartered Accountants Ireland – Northwest Society. The Society would also be delighted to hear any feedback or comments from the day via messages on their facebook page or emails to Catherine.young@chartereda ccountants.ie.

Follow the Adventures of Fionn the Foot!
G
reen-Schools National Walk to School Week takes place from May 12th to 16th and this year we’ve sent our mascot, Fionn the Foot, on an adventure around Ireland to persuade people of the power of the foot! Fionn will be travelling (by sustainable means, of course!) around the island, stopping off at scenic spots, towns and villages and hopefully meeting lots of wouldbe-walkers along the way. He’ll be keeping us updated on his adventures via Green-Schools’ Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It’s not hard to miss this giant yellow Foot and anyone who spots Fionn can send us photos or tweet us using #FollowFionn. This year over a thousand schools across Ireland will take part in An Taisce Green-Schools National Walk to School Week. The week is a country-wide initiative which will result in students, their parents and teachers walking to and from school, to celebrate the environmental, health, social and financial benefits of active travel on the school journey. Building on the success of National Walk to School Week 2013, An Taisce hopes that schools will surpass last year’s figure of 32,000 students walking to school all over Ireland on National WOW (Walk on Wednesday) Day on May 14th. The week will also be an opportunity for schools to learn about all the benefits of other green travel options on the school journey such as cycling, Park ‘n’ Stride or carpooling as alternatives to the car.

North Roscommon gone and you'll find out about the wildlife that thrives in these forests and on the lake. The 'Lough Key Experience' is an engaging audio trail of the Park's history, flora arid fauna through the 19th century underground tunnels, to the top of the refurbished 5-storey Moylurg viewing tower and along a contemporary Tree Canopy Walk, the first of its kind in Ireland, This 300m long creation of timber and steel gently rises 9m above the woodland floor and offers an engaging 'birds eye' view of nature as it meanders through the treetops offering panoramic views of the shimmering island studded lake. King House King House is a magnificently restored Georgian Mansion located in Boyle, County Roscommon. It was built in the early 1700’s for Sir Henry King, whose family were one
of the most powerful and wealthy in Ireland. After its first life as a home, King House was converted into a military barracks in the 19th century for the famous Connaught Rangers regiment. At the end of Civil War in 1923 the barracks passed into the control of the newly formed Irish Free State Army. Following many years as a merchants store, King House was saved from demolition in the late 1980s and restored to its former Georgian style by Roscommon County Council. Marvel at the grandeur, savour the magnificence of the period rooms, or just have fun exploring our interpretive exhibitions designed for both adults and children alike! Writing with a quill and ink or building a brick vault are just some of the many things to do, and a tour of King House would not be complete without a visit to the cold and forbidding jail cells!

winford is situated on the N5, on a tributary of the famous River Moy. This lively town is only 10 miles from Ireland West Airport Knock, and 20 minutes drive from Mayo's Capital town, Castlebar. Its range of quality services and activities make it ideal for holiday makers. Swinford is renowned for its fishing waters, in particular the Callow lakes. The River Moy is internationally famous for its excellent salmon fishing, and attracts anglers from all over the globe. The East Mayo Anglers' Association, Swinford have over six and a half miles of prime fishing water A wealth of archaeological sites are within walking distance of the town, which is an excellent base from which to tour many of Mayo's visitor attractions including Croagh Patrick, Ceide Fields and the Foxford Woollen Mills. A long stretch of the N5 by-passes the town and has proven very popular with cyclists due to the excellent, slightly undulating road surface. The annual Tour De Humbert runs from Kilcummin, on Killala Bay in Co. Mayo, where a French expeditionary force landed in 1798 to help the Irish in their rebellion that year. It follows the erratic path of the advancing force to the scene of their final battle and defeat at Ballinamuck in Co. Longford. The route passes through some wonderful Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo scenery including Swinford where General Humbert
is said to have camped and stocked up with various supplies. Each August Bank Holiday weekend, the town hosts its annual street festival, titled Síamsa Sráide Swinford (Fun on the Streets of Swinford), one of Ireland's longest running street festivals. Activities during the week include pageantry, heritage displays, ceili dancing and an international busking competition which is held on the Wednesday of the festival, the traditional Harvest Fair Day. A hugely popular 8km road race forms part of the Mayo Race Series in the town which takes place around Swinford town on the Sunday of the festival. Swinford is also a convenient base for anyone who would like to explore many of Mayo's major attractions including Knock Shrine and Folk Museum, Foxford Woolen Mills, Ceide Fields, Croagh Patrick, Achill Island, Westport and The Museum of Country Life at Turlough, near the county town of Castlebar. There are many varying theories as to how the town got its name. Many people say that it derives from a fordable stream which passes through the town and near which was formerly held a considerable market for swine. Like most Irish towns, its placename has no significance or meaning unless written in the Irish language: "Beal Atha na Muice Mouth of the Ford of the Swine". Focus on Ballina Ballina Salmon Festival
The Plastics Specialists
Our Products include: The salmon is also at the centre of one of the west’s longest established Summer events, Ballina’s salmon festival. In July this year, as in years past, the town will come alive in a frenzy of activity. Over the past five years it has developed into one of Ireland's major festivals, providing a week long feast of free entertainment for the entire family - music, song, theatre, art, heritage, culture and novelty events. Foreign visitors view and experience what is best about Mayo during this spectacular week. The town’s newest bridge, Salmon Weir Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge over the River Moy from Barrett St. to Ridge Pool Rd. The bridge, which was designed to resemble a fishing rod, was opened in July 2009. The town is well serviced with its road, rail and bus network and is just approximately 50 miles from Knock International Airport. Ballina is the principle service centre in North Mayo. While there are a number of national multiple retailers within the town centre, including Tesco, Penneys, Easons, Shaws, Dunnes Stores,
Boots, Holland & Barrett, Costa Coffee and others, which are all key anchors and attract customers to the town, the traditional businesses are still a major attraction, and continue to provide locals and visitors with an unrivalled range of products and services.Ballina has a very lively entertainment scene with ample choice when it comes to eating out and hitting the town. A long-standing reputation for being a great place to eat out, Ballina has a wide variety of restaurants serving Irish, European and Asian cuisine. It also has a fine choice in late night bars and night clubs. The newlyrefurbished Arts Centre, with state of the art facilities and 200-seater auditorium is attracting top national and international acts, in addition to providing a facility for local performances and a wide range of social and cultural events. The Jackie Clarke Museum and unique gardens is now attracting additional tourists to the town and the Mary Robinson Interpretive Centre should be a major tourist and cultural addition to the region in the future.

Focus on Belmullet
elmullet is the final town along Tir Saile or the North Mayo Sculpture Trail. This project which was the largest public arts project in Ireland entailed the creation of fourteen site-specific sculptures along the North Mayo coast from Ballina to Belmullet. The Sculptures were put in place during 1993, as part of the celebration of Mayo 5000, a yearlong event which marked the presence of human-kind in Mayo for over the previous fifty centuries. Belmullet is a popular area for fishing, with fresh-water and seaangling off Broadhaven Bay. Belmullet is home to many
events and festivals throughout the year, including Feile Beal an Mhuirthead (Belmullet Festival) which is held in August. Féile Iorrais is a ten day international folk arts festival which takes place during the summer months throughout the Barony of Erris including the town of Belmullet. Aras Inis Gluaire (the Arts Centre)is located in the civic centre in Belmullet and was opened in 2007. The centre has, since it's opening hosted hundreds of concerts, performances, gigs and exhibitions. It is also the home of Pictiúrlann Iorrais the local film club.
Ionad Deirbhle is a heritage centre located about 11 miles from Belmullet. The centre provides visitors with a fascinating insight into the way of life of local people in times past. Visitors can access a wealth of information on archaeology, local folklore and local history. Ballycroy National Park is located within 30 km of Belmullet. The park was established in 1998 and is Ireland’s sixth National Park. It is made up a wilderness of 11,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and is dominated by the Nephin Beg mountain range.A visitors centre is open at certain times of year, check out the website for more details. Gateway Leisure is a fully air conditioned complex which contains the following facilities: 10 pin bowling lanes, 6 pool tables & air hockey tables, Kid Island – children’s activity centre, birthday party rooms, licensed pub and restaurant and luxury outdoor area. History In about 1715 Sir Arthur Shaen began "building a little town" on that site of what is now Belmullet. That little town remained very isolated and under-developed until the new road from Castlebar to Belmullet was opened in 1824. Later that year the heir to the Shaen estate William Henry Carter arrived in a horse-drawn carriage, the first to ever visit Belmullet.
Over a number of years William Carter improved the infrastructure of the town building the Erris Hotel and a quay which could accommodate vessels of 100 tons. The town continued to grow and by the 1830's the was a daily postal service from Ballina, numerous trades and fifteen licensed premises in the town and a courthouse (which was constructed in 1833).As with many towns in Mayo the Famine period during the
1840's almost sounded the death knell for the town. The suffering and trauma endured by the population was incredible. Towards the end of the 1880's however things started to again improve with public works projects such as the provision of a town water supply coming on stream. Plans were initiated for the development of a rail link with the rest of Ireland but unfortunately these never came to fruition.

Robbie Williams: No Take That Tour With Baby T
he singer reveals his wife is expecting their second child but says the new arrival will stop him reuniting with his old group. Robbie Williams has said he will not be joining Take That on any future tour after revealing he is to become a father again. The singer announced his wife Ayda was pregnant for the second time while he was on his European tour. He tweeted: "Ayda and I are delighted to announce that Theodora Rose Williams is going to be a big sister. RW xxx" Speaking to The Sun newspaper, the star said his wife's pregnancy and his gruelling schedule meant he had decided not to reunite with his former bandmates. He said: "Logistically, I can't do it. I have the tour and I'm going to be a dad again." Williams is currently in the middle of a 41-date tour of Europe, which will take him to several venues in the UK. He also plans to travel to Australia, where he will play a further eight shows. The Swings Both Ways tour showcases his album of the same name, which features cover versions and original material sung
in his now-trademark swing jazz style. Take That are yet to announce any upcoming tour dates but there is feverish speculation among fans they may be planning a string of gigs in 2015. Gary Barlow toured recently but is not expected to return to The X Factor, after announcing live on air he was quitting the show.
Washing Machine Ordeal For Two-Year-Old Boy A toddler had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck inside a washing machine at his home in China. The two-year-old boy climbed into the spin dryer section of the appliance to retrieve a toy, but then got his legs stuck in a basket. Firefighters had to be called to the boy's family home in the eastern city of Nanjing in Jiangsu province. After discussing how to free the child, they decided to carefully dismantle the device. First they used a saw and hydraulic pliers to open the washer's cabinet, and then they used a hacksaw and scissors to break the basket. After a delicate 30-minute operation, the boy was released uninjured.
House Prices: Best Annual Rise 'Since 2007'
T
he latest snapshot of UK house prices points to an acceleration in growth, with the biggest annual rise since 2007 recorded in April. The Nationwide House Price Index charts a 1.2% increase month-on-month and a 10.9% rise over the past 12 months with the top end of the market in London and the South East leading the charge. The performance took the average cost of a home in the UK to 183,577, Nationwide calculated. Its monthly report was re-
leased as a study by the housing charity shelter and auditors KPMG warned that prices could quadruple in 20 years if more is not done to tackle the housing shortage, which is seeing 100,000 fewer homes than are needed being built each year. High demand but poor supply of properties for sale has been a major factor behind the recovery in the housing market in the wake of the financial crisis with schemes to help people secure a mortgage, such as Help to Buy, stoking the interest. Robert Gardner, Nationwide's
Chief Economist, said: "The introduction of Mortgage Market Review (MMR) measures could have an impact on activity levels in the months ahead as the new measures bed down. "However, underlying demand is likely to remain robust, as mortgage rates remain close to all-time lows and as consumer confidence improves further on the back of stronger labour market conditions and the brighter economic outlook. "Earnings growth is beginning to pick up, with wage increases finally outpacing the rise in the
cost of living in February. "Nevertheless, house price growth is outstripping income growth by a wide margin. "The risk is that unless supply accelerates significantly, affordability will become stretched. “The upturn in construction of new homes continues to lag far behind the upturn in demand, with the number of new homes being built in England still around 40% below pre-crisis levels (and this was already insufficient to keep up with the increase in the number of households being formed). "MMR measures, which place a greater emphasis on affordability, should help to ensure that prices do not become detached from earnings. The Nationwide report highlighted that higher priced properties in London and the South East accounted for a higher proportion of transactions during April - renewing fears of a price bubble. Mr Gardner added: "In London, the proportion of housing transactions involving properties over £500,000 has increased from 13% in 2007 to around 25% in 2013. "The share involving properties of over £1m has more than doubled from 3% to more than 6%."
Silver-Lined Underpants 'Protect Sperm Count'
Silver-lined boxer shorts to repel radiation from everyday gadgets have been developed by a British scientist. Joseph Perkins says the metal woven into the Wireless Armour underwear creates a small Faraday cage to protect against 99.9% of radiation. He says the pants are necessary because of falling sperm counts, which he believes is partly due to the gadgets we use every day. Mr Perkins said the underwear works because the cage - invented by Michael Faraday in the 1800s - distributes any electromagnetic radiation evenly around it. In a message on his Indiegogo fundraising page Mr Perkins said: "The communications systems in parliament and vital military installations are all protects by Faraday cages to stop them being interfered with. "Now you can protect your most valuable assets too with Wireless Armour. "This covers the entire range of radiation emitted by wireless devices, from voice and texts through to 4G and Wi-Fi." Mr Perkins said the idea came to him while teaching physics in Switzerland, when he said he realised his gadgets were exposing him to "huge amounts of radiation". He says he needs to raise £30,000 to put the underwear into production. Early backers can get a pair for £14, while the price will rise to £24 for later backers. Mr Perkins says he also plans to develop a bra which protects against radiation.
Policewoman Sacked Over 'Plebgate' Row A police officer who sent details of the Downing Street row to another officer - who then leaked them to the press - is dismissed. A policewoman has been sacked after details of the "Plebgate" row were leaked to the press, the Metropolitan Police has said. Gillian Weatherley was found guilty of gross misconduct over her role in the debacle after a three-day hearing. The Diplomatic Protection Squad member was on duty in Downing Street on the day of the confrontation between former chief whip Andrew Mitchell and PC Toby Rowland in September 2012. The row erupted when Mr Mitchell was prevented from cycling through the main gate of Downing Street. The Tory MP, who was accused of calling the officer a "****ing pleb", ended up resigning over the row. He has always maintained he never used the word "pleb", although he admits swearing during the altercation. A day after the confrontation, PC Weatherley sent a photograph of an email between PC Rowland and his bosses to another officer, James Glanville, who then leaked details to a national newspaper. At her misconduct hearing, she was found to have breached standards of professional behaviour in relation to honesty and integrity. She was also found to have breached orders and instructions, ignored confidentiality rules, committed discreditable conduct and failed to challenge and report improper conduct. The officer was suspended from duty following her arrest in February last year. Prosecutors previously decided not to press charges against PC Weatherley, who was accused by the Metropolitan Police of giving "inaccurate and misleading" statements to officers investigating the row.

BEALTAINE ARTS FESTIVAL B allina Arts Centre is a staunch supporter of Bealtaine and launches a most exciting programme throughout May to celebrate the 19th annual Bealtaine arts festival, celebrating creativity as we age. Bealtaine offers the beginner the chance to discover hidden talents and for a long-dormant skill to find a new channel. The theme for Bealtaine 2014 is ‘And catch the heart off guard’, a phrase from Seamus Heaney's poem Postscript. It is an invitation to be surprised by joy, to astonish yourself, to find your heart’s desire without looking for it. It is proven that people in care, people who are living alone, even people with Alzheimers or other dementia-related conditions, if they have access to music, art and drama, they experience significant benefits. Among these are a reduction in anxiety and depression, improvement in communicating and interacting with others, an improvement in mental and physical health that can even reduce the need for some medications. Ballina Arts Centre proudly showcases the talents and creativity of both first time and professional older artists with an excellent programme. On 7th May, 2pm, Ballina Arts Centre welcomes Small Plastic Wars, a theatre production, which is partially based on actor Pat McGrath’s own life story which is built on a bitter-sweet bedrock of unrealised dreams, the challenges of married life and the impact of recession. His passion for a hobby he never had time for fills the void of unemployment, skews his
priorities and for a time outweighs any concerns about family or income. This is true for most of us and so it is advantageous that Pat is happy to do post show discussions following the shows. The discussions will be based on the contents of the play and the pressures people experience at the loss of a job and the effects – good and not so good - of radical changes in working life on self-esteem, family and a community. Bealtaine Film Tour at Ballina Arts Centre. Ballina Arts Centre is delighted to present High Society, 2pm. The Strand 16th May The Quartert 23 May Ambivalence Gallery Tour by Kieron Gilroy on 30th May Cleo van de Grijn.
The Bealtaine festival was established in Ireland in 1996. Bealtaine is an Age & Opportunity initiative part-funded by the Arts Council and delivered by hundreds of organizations around the country. Minister Kathleen Lynch, Minister with responsibility for Disability, Older people, Equality and Mental Health, recently awarded certificates to the first 16 graduates of Age & Opportunities “Creative Exchanges” programme. The graduation ceremony held in the Irish Museum of Modern Art, celebrates the award of the first Creative Exchanges certificates which will bring a new level of creativity into the lives of people in nursing homes. Music – THE RIGHT NOTE As usual we will encourage people to greet the dawn in song on the final Sunday in May with the DAWN CHORUS. This year we are organizing a weekend of learning about, caring for and maintaining the older voice. We know that many older people are active in choirs and we are keen to support that and to learn more about it. We are still tying down details of location but included will be composition workshops with Elaine Agnew, vocal technique workshops with Alan Leech, some sight singing and having fun with repertoire. We’ll be introducing a DAWN CHORUS 2014 song this year so that all over the country, we’ll be singing from the same hymn sheet! Watch this space for further details on location and dates of THE RIGHT NOTE and DAWN CHORUS. Literature We are working with Dublin Writer’s Festival to develop an event that draws from the concerns and themes raised by the interviewees for our LIFE IS FOR LIVING 25th anniversary book. This is still in planning as is a joint poetry event which we are organizing with POETRY IRELAND – again, we will issue further information on this as soon as we have confirmation of it. VOLTAGE FUNDING Just a reminder too that funding is still available under this scheme and arts organizations which work with older people are welcome to apply. The VOLTAGE Bursary offers

€5,000 along with support to an older group with plans for an interesting or exciting project that will have real benefit. Older people in Ireland invest a lot of time and energy in their local communities, through environmental projects, charity work, drama clubs, choirs, doing a lot with almost no money. The VOLTAGE Bursary is a way for Age & Opportunity to celebrate that work and to see what one group could achieve with an investment of €5,000 and a little support along
the way. We are looking for projects that demonstrate older people’s capacity and potential for taking on roles within their localities. The organisation is particularly interested in intergenerational projects. The closing date for applications for the VOLTAGE Bursary is now 21st February 2014 and applicants must be prepared to evaluate and learn from their work and share their ideas with others. ashing a car can be a chore - and a costly one at that. In response, Nissan has begun tests on innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt, meaning drivers may never have to clean their car again. The specially engineered, super-hydrophobic and oleophobic paint, which repels water and oils, has been applied to the all-new Nissan Note to create the world's first selfcleaning car.
To assess the real-world effectiveness of the superhydrophobic as a potential aftermarket application, engineers at Nissan Technical Centre Europe will be testing the self-cleaning Note over the coming months in a variety of conditions. Nissan is the first car maker to apply the technology, called Ultra-Ever Dry®, on automotive bodywork. By creating a protective layer of air between the paint and

environment, it effectively stops standing water and road spray from creating dirty marks on the car's surface. It's not the first time selfcleaning technology has been used on the Note. The car already features a 'wash and blow dry' function on its rear view camera. ‘Dairy farmers need to play the long game with milk quota changes’
T
he removal of milk quotas provides significant opportunity, but only for those farmers that are well prepared. This is according to Bank of Ireland’s head of Agriculture, Seán Farrell, who was speaking at lthe recent Bank of Ireland agri conference in Fermoy. Irish dairy farmers are readying themselves for a potential boon
period in the industry with the abolition of milk quotas from 2015. As one of the most profitable conventional farming system, the imminent removal of the quotas is set to enhance the sector’s attractiveness even further over the next five years. To capitalise and profit, though, farmers throughout the country must prepare properly,

according to Seán Farrell, head of Agriculture at Bank of Ireland. “We expect to see significant growth from next year onwards and we know that many dairy farmers have already bred additional stock in anticipation of the change, while many others are considering expanding their farms in the future.” The removal of the sector’s most considerable limiting factor will also lend itself to attracting new entrants, and while Farrell encourages entry to the sector, he says that converting to dairying will not be for everyone and has a word of warning for those that are considering making the switch. “New dairy farmers should concentrate their immediate efforts on seeking out the best advice possible at this stage. There are many platforms available for them to do so such as local discussion groups. Spending some time on dairy farms with high standards of efficiency is also a smart move, which should offer invaluable insight into proficient grass and cash budgeting. Starting out with good habits like this offers new entrants a solid base on which to build their business.” What’s your position? One of the key questions for all dairy farmers ahead of next year’s change should be ‘where am I now?’ “A thorough review of the existing balance sheet including land, buildings, infrastructure, machinery and stock should be an immediate prior-
ity,” notes Farrell. “It’s also best to carry out a full appraisal of the financial position and undertake a realistic assessment of the human resources required to take advantage once the limit of quota on production have been removed. Today, farmers should be asking themselves where they want to be in five years’ time, and while some farmers will choose to expand, others, depending on factors such as family circumstances or personal ambition, may wish to remain at current levels of production and decide that improving efficiencies within their current resources is the best way forward. Whatever the scenario for each individual, it’s best to have it worked out well in advance of such a marked shift in the sector.”

New study says seven portions of fruits and vegetables daily may reduce risk of dying
A new study says that vegetables and fruits can reduce the risk of dying. While people have always known about the health benefits of eating such foods, what's important here is that the amount of veggies and fruits is what may help people live longer. Specifically, the researchers involved in the University of London study said that people who eat seven portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day might be able to slash their risk of dying by up to 42 percent. The eating habits of over 65,000 people were tracked for 12 years and compared to people who ate less than one portion of fruits and vegetables daily; those eating
seven portions were shown to have a 25 percent lower risk of death from cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The findings, which were reported in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, state, "A robust inverse association exists between fruit and vegetable consumption and mortality, with benefits seen in up to 7+ portions daily." Seven portions of fruits and vegetables: is it too much? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a 30-year-old male who gets about 30-60 minutes of exer-
cise daily requires 2 cups of fruit and 3.5 cups of vegetables daily, less than the findings of this new study. However, it's important to note that requirements vary based on age, gender, exercise level and dietary requirements/preferences. Some people take issue with consuming excessive amounts of fruits and vegetables, indicating that it may lead to weight gain. Many individuals tend to gravitate more toward fruits than vegetables, which could be problematic. Some fruit has almost three times the calories per serving as nonstarchy vegetables. So it's necessary to pay attention to the balance of these portions.
Boys should be given HPV vaccine Yoga in pregnancy reduces anxiety The HPV vaccine, which is currently given to young girls in Ireland to prevent cervical cancer, should be given to young boys as well, experts have said. HPV (human papilloma virus) is a group of more than 100 viruses. HPV infection is very common - in fact, it is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. Most HPV infections have no noticeable symptoms and over 90% are cleared by the body's immune system. However, some people will develop infections that need treatment. In women, HPV infections can lead to abnormal changes in the cervix, which if left untreated, can lead to cervical cancer. The provision of the vaccine to girls in their first year of secondary school has been in place here since 2010. However, a new study by scientists at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and St James's Hospital has found a high rate of cancer-associated HPV infections in men who have sex with men. These infections would be preventable if the HPV vaccine was provided to males. According to their findings,
the incidence of HPV-associated anal cancer is on the increase. Furthermore, men who have sex with men, especially those who already have HIV, are ‘disproportionately affected'. Meanwhile, HPV now also accounts for around one in five cases of head, neck and throat cancers in Ireland and this figure is rising. This latest study, which looked at men who have sex with men, half of whom had HIV, revealed that 69% were infected with HPV. At least one in four of these had a specific type of HPV, known as HPV type 16, which has been linked to over 80% of anal cancers. "Our study highlights the burden of anal HPV infection in men who have sex with men and those with HIV co-infection. A significant proportion of participants in our study did not have evidence of current infection with HR-HPV types 16 or 18, which are the HPV types most commonly associated with anal cancer. This indicates that a large proportion could benefit from HPV vaccination," noted the study's principal investigator, Prof Colm Bergin, of TCD.

Also commenting on the findings, the study's lead author, Dr Corinna Sadlier, of TCD, pointed out that the National Immunisation Advisory Committee recently recommended that the HPV vaccine be made available for males and females with immunecompromising conditions, such as HIV. It also stated that the HPV vaccine should be considered for men who have sex with men up to the age of 26 years, and boys aged nine to 26 years. "The greatest benefit of the HPV vaccine has been demonstrated prior to sexual debut. Universal vaccination of boys and girls, as is offered in the US and Australia, is the ideal. While we await guidance on provision of HPV vaccine for boys, this data would support provision of targeted vaccination of high risk groups. "Public Health and national policy maker support is needed if these guidelines are to be implemented and if this new information is to be integrated into national policy,' she said. Details of this study are published in the journal, HIV Medicine
Yoga during pregnancy can reduce stress and anxiety levels, the first study of its kind has found. According to UK researchers, high levels of anxiety during pregnancy have been linked with postnatal depression, which can increase the risk of developing depression later in life. Stress during pregnancy has also been linked to an increased risk of behavioural and developmental problems in children and mental health problems in mothers. It is also thought to increase the risk of premature births and having babies with a low birth weight. The researchers set out to see whether yoga can reduce stress levels. This marks the first time the effects of yoga on pregnant women have been studied. The study monitored the progress of 59 women who were pregnant for the first time. Some of the women took part in a prenatal yoga session once a week for eight weeks, while the other women had their normal prenatal treatment with no yoga.
The researchers found that even one session of prenatal yoga was found to reduce anxiety levels by over 30%. Stress hormone levels also fell by 14%. Similar results were recorded at the final session of yoga. "It is surprising this has never been looked at before, we have long believed that it works but no research had been done to back up the theory. We have now gone some way to prove that it can help. It was not a small effect either. This has the potential to really help mothers who are feeling anxious about their pregnancy," the researchers said. They pointed out that prenatal yoga involves relaxation and breathing techniques, as well as postures that pregnant women can achieve. "There is a growing body of evidence that maternal antenatal anxiety may increase the risk of pre-term delivery and the likelihood of giving birth to a low birth weight child. If we can reduce these risk factors, and perhaps reduce the rate of postnatal mood disorders in mothers and

negative health outcomes in their offspring, then that can only be a good thing," they insisted. The researchers said that these results ‘confirm what many who take part in yoga have suspected for a long time'. "There is also evidence yoga can reduce the need for pain relief during birth and the likelihood for delivery by emergency caesarean," the team from the Universities of Manchester and Newcastle added. Details of these findings are published in the journal, Depression and Anxiety.
