Searching for Ireland’s Everyday Hero
Searching for Ireland’s Everyday Hero: Óran Richardson, age 7, from Malahide Dublin pictured with 2fm presenters, Jenny Greene and Nicky Byrne at the launch of the ‘Everyday Hero’ award Do you know an ‘Everyday Hero’ near you in Sligo? Do you want to thank them on live television? The People of the Year Awards in partnership with The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene on RTÉ 2fm, are looking for Ireland’s ‘Everyday Hero’. It’s the ordinary person that does extraordinary things that really make a difference to their family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues or local Sligo community. Ireland’s ‘Everyday Hero’ can be of any age, from any walk of life and from any
part of Ireland but there is just one criterion– they must be really special to be considered! They might be the definition of community spirit, or the person who puts everyone else before themselves and never asks for thanks. The team behind 2fm’s The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene are calling out to people all over the country to nominate their heroic partners, friends, parents, neighbours and co-workers that deserve some national recognition at the 2014 People of the Year Awards!
To nominate your everyday hero, log on to peopleoftheyear.com or email nbshow@rte.ie. Nominators will be brought on air to talk to Nicky and Jenny to tell everyone just why the person they are nominating is an ’Everyday Hero’. All the nominations will be considered by a special People of the Year Awards adjudication panel and will be announced live on the People of the Year Awards TV programme on RTÉ 1 on Saturday, 6th December 2014. Stay tuned weekdays to The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene on 2fm, which airs 11am to 2pm for further details. Closing date is Friday 7th November. Seán Egan, Chairman, Rehab, said, “Around the country there are people who are heroes in their own community every day. Everybody knows someone who always seems to make a difference – often in an understated way. Please nominate your ‘Everyday Hero’ for a People of the Year Award, and give us the chance to say thank you to them in a unique way.” RTÉ 2fm presenter Nicky Byrne said, “This event is not about big names and showbiz, it’s about ordinary people who are honestly just amazing. The stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things are humbling and inspiring. I can’t wait to have one of our listeners up on stage as a winner this year!” RTÉ 2fm presenter Jenny Greene said, “Every day on our show we get calls and texts from listeners asking us to thank someone special for something amazing they have done. The ‘Everyday Hero’ award gives us the perfect opportunity to bring them on air to let them publically thank that special person for being their everyday hero and for making a difference to their lives.” For the latest updates on the Awards, click onto www.peopleoftheyear.com, find us on Facebook – www.facebook.com/PeopleOfTheYearAw ards, or follow us on Twitter – @peopleawards

Castlebar Students Help Launch Junk Kouture’s 2015 Recycling Fashion Comp L ast week saw the call out for entrants for the prestigious Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture Recycling Fashion Competition 2015 in association with Repak. The All-Ireland secondary school competition was launched by brand new judge, Model and TV presenter Vogue Williams who was joined by a selection of finalists from last year’s competition including Emma Grealis from St. Joseph’s Secondary School. The five entries on show at the launch made it to last year’s Grand Final in the O2 Dublin, giving future entrants a taster of what to expect from Junk Kouture 2015. Emma wore her striking design ‘Bottled Up Blue’ which she designed with her classmates Aideen Caulfield and Emma Horan. This bold, one shouldered piece made from melted plastic bottles, was a big hit with the judging panel in last year’s competition. Their teacher is Ms Geary. Emma and her team, Vogue and the other talented Junk designers travelled to Dublin last week and partook in the glamorous photoshoot at the famous U2 wall at windmill lane. This famous wall is located at the old Windmill Lane studios where U2 recorded their first album. The colourful graffiti on the walls is dedicated to U2 and proved a great choice for the artistic Junk Kouture launch photoshoot. The girls posed for photographs with awaiting photographers and were interviewed on camera. The photos have since appeared in the Irish Times, the Irish Mirror and Xpose.ie among others.

This dress was designed by students from Youthreach Drogheda. Commenting on the launch, Bank of Ireland Youth Marketing Manager, Conor Mc Glynn said “We're a dedicated supporter of secondary school initiatives and absolutely delighted to be sponsoring Junk Kouture for the third year running. The competition has a unique way of empowering young people to hone their creative skills and meet others with similar interests. For Bank of Ireland, it's a meaningful opportunity
for us to engage with our school partners and customers and celebrate some of the most bold and innovative young people in the country.” Laura Murphy from Repak added:We are delighted to announce our support for Junk Kouture, a programme that doesn’t just inspire outstanding creativity in young people, but also highlights the importance of environmentally aware behaviour and mindfulness of how much we consume and how much we throw away.As a judge, I’m really looking forward to seeing how the students reinvent old plastics and turn them into haute couture!” The recycled fashion competition, now in its fifth
year, is open to all secondary school students in both the Republic and Northern Ireland. As with previous years there will be four regional heats; The Helix, Dublin 6th March 2015, Millennium Forum, Derry 9th March 2015, The Royal Theatre, Castlebar 11th March 2015 and University Concert Hall, Limerick, 13th March. The Grand Final featuring the top 80 dresses will take place in the 3Arena, Dublin on 24th April 2015. With some great prizes on offer, the clock is now ticking for students and teachers alike to get creative, full details can be found below. Online application will open January 12th and close at midnight January 31st 2015.

Mayo Gardaí honoured for their bravery
HONOURED Pictured from left at the National Bravery Awards are: Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett, Garda Mark Irwin, Garda John Boyle, Reserve Garda Stephen Corrigan and Assistant Commissioner John Twomey.
B
eyond the call of duty: Three Mayo gardaí have been honoured for acts of bravery after they were involved in saving two people from drowning in separate incidents in Westport. Westport-based duo Garda John Boyle and Reserve Garda Stephen Corrigan and Garda Mark Irwin, formerly of Westport but now
stationed in Sligo, received a bronze medal and scroll at the National Bravery Awards at Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, Dublin last Friday. Garda Irwin has been awarded an unprecedented two Bronze medals for separate acts of courage. The first incident, on October 28, 2012, relates to a rescue from a car that had veered off the road into
Knappaghbeg Lake. On arriving at the accident scene, Garda Irwin, accompanied by Reserve Garda Stephen Corrigan, entered the lake as the car was on its roof and was submerged in the water. Although the driver was trapped in the vehicle the two gardaí managed to lift the driver’s head from under the water to an air pocket
and keep him conscious until the fire brigade and ambulance arrived. Without their quick thinking and brave actions on the night it is possible that the driver of the car could have perished. Three weeks later, on November 18, 2012, Garda Irwin was patrolling the Westport Quay area with Garda John Boyle, where they observed a car hanging at the edge of a pier. The driver had attempted to exit the car once it had crashed but had fallen 15 feet into the sea. Both gardaí decided to make their way down to him via a fixed ladder and entered the sea, before dragging the man from the sea and carefully brought him back up the ladder and onto dry ground. He was subsequently brought to Mayo General Hospital where he made a full recovery. Again, without the swift actions of both gardaí the man concerned may well have died. Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett, TD and Seanad Cathaoirleach Senator Paddy Burke presented 21 awards in all for outstanding acts of bravery at the national ceremony on Friday week last.
That Collooney-Castlebaldwin blackspot again
F
ianna Fáil Senator Paschal Mooney is calling on the Transport Minister provide necessary funds to upgrade the Collooney-Castlebaldwin road in Sligo. The National Roads Authority says the route could be upgraded using the Public Private Partnership model if state money can be secured. Senator Mooney commented, “As many as 30 people have lost their lives along the 15 kilometre stretch of road, which has been highlighted as an accident black spot, however little work has been carried out to improve the conditions on the road. The Minister has previously stated that a decision on this project was the responsibility of the National Roads Authority, which has now signalled that it is ready to carry out the works if funding is provided. “It is significant that the NRA has singled out the route for an upgrade, and reinforces the concerns of the local community. NRA Chief Executive Fred Barry says “there is an interest in funding in Ireland now that
wasn’t there 12 months ago”. It is important that we seize on this opportunity and ensure that Minister Donohoe provides the necessary funding to enable a PPP for this important project. “Planning permission for a bypass has been granted and the works are expected to cost in the region of €100m. Unnecessary delays must be avoided to prevent more lives from being lost. There is an opportunity now to move on this project, which is being backed by the NRA. The decision now lies with Minister Donohoe and I would urge him to move on this project quickly. Not only will these works vastly improve road safety, they remove a major bottleneck on the main Dublin-Sligo road, which will be economically beneficial to the North-West. Most importantly, however, it will be a victory for the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones and who have campaigned tirelessly for this road to be upgraded”.

Joe Kennedy, Marcella Wilkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson
S
ir Alex Ferguson the former manager of Manchester United Football Club, joined a sell-out crowd in Manchester to help launch the memoirs of his friend and neighbour in Manchester - the award winning Mayo man Joe Kennedy. The book which is called 'On the Strength of a Ten Bob Note’ tells the story of Joe Kennedy's life in being born in New York, growing up in Doocastle in County Mayo and travelling to England to
seek his fortune at the age of 16 in 1953. It was launched at the Chorlton Irish Club in South Manchester, where Joe was a former chairperson, the club is Manchester’s longest running Irish club. All the proceeds from the book launch and the sale of the book were being donated to St Ann’s Hospice. The event was attended by people from all over Manchester and Mayo with the managing director of Ireland West
Airport - Joe Gilmore where Joe is the current chairperson flying in for the event. Amongst those attending the packed out event was Lawrence Hennigan from Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business group who commented about the event “It was a fantastic evening and we were delighted to attend the event to support Joe and St Ann’s Hospice. He is a great supporter of our work in developing tourism and business links between Mayo and Manchester.” Marcella Wilkinson the President of the Manchester Mayo Association is pictured here with Joe Kennedy and Sir Alex Ferguson after making a donation to the charity on behalf of the association. The book recounts the story of how Joe established ‘Kennedy’s Construction Company’ in Manchester, which at one stage employed over 800 people. The book also talks about his work as a philanthropist and how he has contributed to numerous charitable causes in Ireland and England, and his work with the Northern Ireland Peace Process. The autobiography is a candid and enthralling memoir, where Joe recalls his astonishing rags to riches story and recounts some of the extraordinary episodes in his eventful life. ‘On the Strength of a Ten Bob Note’ has been described by its publishers as a fascinating portrait of an Irish emigrant who always remained true to his roots.

more about our members; interests, views and more importantly what it is they are looking for in a partner. At this initial meeting we also verify identification by means of a photographic ID e.g. passport, driver’s license. • Step 3: We use the information gathered to build a profile. When we have completed the profile we use this to get to work on finding a suitable match. • Step 4: Once we identify a match, we contact both parties to discuss the profile (all profiles are confidential and no personal details will be shared until both parties give consent). Once both parties are happy we exchange contact details so a meeting can be arranged. Online dating seems to be taking off in recent years, do you see more people going online or is there still an interest in the traditional “match maker”? Online dating has definitely grown in recent years, but it is not for everyone. Many of my members have gone down this route, with limited success before joining Unclaimed Treasures. There are a few complaints that have been mentioned to me about online dating. It can be daunting and there is definitely nervousness around the anonymity of it. At Unclaimed Treasures, because members have submitted photographic identification and have been interviewed by one of our team, we can guarantee that our members are who they say they are. introductions agencies out there, what makes Unclaimed Treasures stand out from the crowd? There are a few things that make us different from the others out there. First of all we cater specifically and only for the 40 to active retired. All of our members are in the 40 to active retired bracket and they are the only people we are interested in speaking to. We also don’t look for payment on registration or in advance of an introduction, our no obligation interviews are free and it is only when we have a match ready that the question of payment arises. The good thing about Unclaimed Treasures is that we make our matches based on interests and personalities. Both will be aware of what these interests are so the ice should be easily broken on the first meeting. What are your recommendations to impress on a first introduction? I have found that an informal coffee or a drink make of the best first introductions. They give you a chance to meet in a neutral location, check each other out and if you are enjoying each other’s company you can always continue the date. Unclaimed Treasures e turned the tables on Brian Murphy, founder of Unclaimed Treasures to find out more about the introductions agency for the 40 to active retired in Ireland. Tell us a bit about Unclaimed Treasures and how it all started? Unclaimed Treasures is an introductory agency that caters specifically for the 40 to active retired in Ireland. Being single myself, and seeing some of the challenges that my single friends were having when it came to meeting people, I realised that there was really no service in Ireland that concentrated on the 40 to active retired and I thought this would an interesting area to get involved in. A lot of the time people will write you off when you get to a certain vintage, but I believe that it doesn’t matter what age you are you should never stop enjoying life or give up looking for that someone special. How does the whole process work from start to finish? At Unclaimed Treasures we pride ourselves on really getting to know our members and this is what we believe is key to making a truly meaningful match. There are a number of steps to our process: • Step 1: A member of our team will talk an interested prospect through the process over the phone. • Step 2: We will then arrange to meet for a no obligation membership interview. This is an informal chat and we use it find out

TO TALK
Here’s how to talk like a stone-age man: say the word ‘pu’. Your mouth is pursed, your nose is narrowed. You are blowing out a breath, as if to dispel a bad smell.
I
n the Stone Age, the sound pu meant exactly what it means today.
This is how language began. The earliest words in English date back at least 8,000 years — and they describe themselves: we can work out what the words meant by the shapes our lips form when we say them. ‘Pe’, for instance, is different from pu. It starts with the lips together and separates them with a faint pop. Pe means open and the ancient sound is at the core of the modern word open. ‘Mei’ means smile and it makes you do exactly that — your mouth stretches wide, showing your teeth. Once again, the old sound is at the centre of today’s word: smile. Our everyday words have evolved from this language spoken by our Stone Age ancestors. Simple, instinctive and easy to learn, it was born on the steppes of modern Russia and swept through Europe, Asia and India, changing and developing. We don’t know who spoke it first, and it
doesn’t even have a proper name. Archaeologists call it proto-Indo-European, or IE. Experts have uncovered several hundred of its basic sounds. Investigate them and you will uncover astonishing details from history and hundreds of quirky connections in our everyday vocabulary. The Breath Of Life One of the basic sounds of Stone Age language is ‘an’. It means to breathe, and it’s an imitation of the noise itself. Any creature, human or animal, that is alive must be breathing. ‘Man’ is a combination of two concepts as old as time. The ‘m’ sound, for me, myself, and the breathing ‘an’ sound. ‘Man’ is my own living-andbreathing self. The word doesn’t change in Anglo-Saxon, Middle English, Icelandic, Dutch and Swedish, and it was barely different in the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, where it was manu. Bright Ideas Neolithic farmers had many words for light. There was ‘bhal’, the blazing brilliance of the sun and ‘luh’, the luminous intensity of the full moon. And then there was ‘diw’, the bright daylight. Ancient man worshipped the sun and so ‘diw’ is the beginning of deities, days and the divine. To the Romans, the chief god was the father (pater, in Latin) in the sky — diw-pater, or Jupiter. In Latin, day is dies, and mal is bad. So if you’re having a bad day, that’s dismal. Someone who writes for a daily paper is a diurnalist — or journalist. When the sun rises, the daisies open — so-called because they’re the day’s eyes. Tales of the Heart Prehistoric man understood that the heart pumping is the drumbeat of life. ‘Krr’, the sound a taut rope makes when it is twanged, was his attempt to capture it in a word, and so ‘kard’ meant the heart. That’s why, if you suffer a cardiac arrest, you need a cardiologist. It’s also why the middle of an apple is its core, and why generous, warm-hearted people are cordial. The other internal organs are the ‘karn’, giving us carnage, carnivore, carcass and carrion.

Family Ties Our ancestors’ language is the reason so many English words come in family groups. negative ones, for instance, have an ‘n’ at the front: no, never and nightmare. The static ones begin with ‘sta’: stand, stall and stammer. The swollen ones start with ‘tu’: tubby, tulip and tumour. And the empty ones start with ‘va’: vacant, vacuum, vanity. And so on. Eastern Promise The word for dawn was ‘us’. The sound changed slightly to give us the direction from which the sun rises: the east. The medieval English term for men who hailed from the East was Easterling and in the money markets of 13th-century London, the Easterlings controlled monopolies in wood, wheat, fur and flax. They were the bankers of the time, and Easterling coin was the only money that mattered — we still call it sterling.
Carnal means fleshy. Carnival, the festival of flesh, was originally a meat-eating binge before the 40 days of fasting in Lent leading to Easter. And Easter signifies reincarnation — coming back in the flesh. Dog Days Stone Age nomads began to domesticate wolves several thousand years before the first farms, to guard against bears and to herd livestock. ‘Kuon’, meaning dog, evolved to give us canine, kennel, and also
cynic — a word coined for a sect of ancient Greek philosophers, who believed life’s luxuries were a sham. They earned their nickname because they had sex in the street, like dogs. Of course, the first dogs had to be tamed, and the IE word for that is ‘dam’. That’s the origin of domestic, meaning fit for the home. All animals were covered by the term ‘wos’. A horse was ak-wos, since ‘ak’ meant quick. The Romans spelled ak-wos as equus, so today a rider is an equestrian and anything to do with horses is equine.
Plenty to Hide A prehistoric chieftain showed his high status when he sat in his tent on a ‘pel’, or animal hide. Our word is pelt. Early cups and bowls were also made from dried hide, so a basin in Latin is peluis. We pronounce it pelvis, the bowl-shaped bone that supports our own hide. Pel also suggested an animal skin heaped with possessions or a bowl brimming over. By extension, ‘pel’ became many and dozens of words beginning ‘pl’ stem from this: plenty, plural, plus, plethora and plenitude, as well as surplus and replenish.
The Old Lags When one of his herd was straggling, the Stone Age shepherd’s word was ‘lag’. Even now, to lag is to fall behind. In Old English, it was pronounced ‘laet’, meaning slow, sluggish or tardy. To be very ‘laet’ mean coming laetst, or — as we would say — last. Leg also comes from lag, because a lame animal drags its leg. By the Middle Ages, to lag was thieves’ slang for stealing. That’s why in the classic sitcom Porridge, the habitual criminal Norman Stanley Fletcher was an old lag. Mourning Glory Prehistoric man took death seriously. We can decode some ancient funeral rituals from the old words and their modern meanings. ‘Mor’ is the IE root of mourn and also of moan. That implies that grieving was a noisy business. The term for a violent death is murder and the word for regretting it is remorse. For hundreds of years in England, mortal was the all-purpose intensifier, much as we use swearwords now. To be mortal cold was to be very flipping cold indeed. In Victorian times, if you were so drunk you couldn’t stand, you were not just mortal drunk but mortallious. Mamas and Papas Mama means mother, and always has done: ‘ma’ sounds like the cry of a baby. Many words to do with birth contain this ‘ma’ sound. A baby is conceived in the marital bed (either before or after marriage) and grows under a maternity dress, inside the matrix — an old word for
the womb. And all mammals suckle their young. IE words have spread all over the world. From Mandarin to Arabic and Vietnamese to Welsh, the old word for father is based on the syllable ‘pa’. To neolithic man, ‘pa’ meant to feed and protect. The father of the tribe became known as the patriarch. ‘Pa’ gives us powerwords, such as patriotism and palace. But the father’s role as a food provider also gives us many of our words for food, such as pasta, pastry and pâté — lots of things you might find in the pantry, in fact. Blows and Flows ‘Bhleu’ gives us a real insight into the Stone Age mind. It describes the way that the wind blows and life flows. That’s why, when a flower opens, it blooms. Blood flows, too, and gives life. Living Language It’s been 250 years since scholars first guessed at the existence of a Stone Age language as the basis of English. It was August Schleicher, a 19thcentury German, who theorised that languages are living organisms that are born, bloom and die. He even discovered the concept of evolution, years before Charles Darwin — but Schleicher applied it to words instead of animals. So think before you speak. The words in your mouth are alive . . . and are as old as time. ART OF COFFEE
C
offee has been part of our everyday life for centuries. It originated on the plateaus of central Ethiopia. By A.D. 1000, Ethiopian Arabs were collecting the fruit of the tree, which grew wild, and preparing a beverage from its beans. During the fifteenth century traders transplanted wild coffee trees from Africa to southern Arabia. The eastern Arabs, the first to cultivate coffee, soon adopted the Ethiopian Arabs' practice of making a hot beverage from its ground, roasted beans. To this day Coffee still grows around the equator and the art of making coffee begins with the cultivation of the coffee plant This is done by processing the seed of the coffee cherry and removing the pulp and then drying it. The dry seeds (green coffee) are then bagged into juta bags and ship to the roaster Coffee just like any other food, when it is freshly made (roasted and brewed) with care from high quality ingredients tastes fantastic. We love its smell, taste and the fact that it can makes us alert, it can also make tiredness disappear. With having a great coffee roaster at our store in Carrick on Shannon you can enjoy great coffee both at home and also when you are out as more and more cafes, hotels, restaurants are supplied by ART OF COFFEE. Here in Art Of Coffee we take pride in serving you the perfect cup of coffee which begins with roasting the green coffee and then grinding the roasted coffee beans according to the need of the brewing method. All that is left for us to do then is brew that delicious brown beverage. Enjoy!
The only coffee roaster in the North West Region Born into Austro-Hungarian & Italian coffee cultures, Cafe Lounge is a reflection of a life time immersed in coffee, learning from a young age what it takes to make truly great coffee, and it starts with nothing but the finest hand roasted coffees. It is heartening to see so many new businesses locating in premises recently vacated and should provide an impetus to development as the economy emerges from the
recession. The town is now the largest in County Mayo and the third largest in the province of Connaught, after Galway and Sligo. In the context of the West Region, Ballina forms a major centre in the regional settlement hierarchy and is a focal point for the North Mayo/West Sligo area with a
catchment population of in excess of 40,000 people. Ballina is situated at the most southern tip of Killala Bay, at the mouth of the River Moy and is now the well-established centre of commerce for this region. The total population of Ballina stands at 14,001 (Urban & Rural) as confirmed by the Central Statistics Office. The population of Ballina Urban is 6,842, of which 3,326 are male and 3,516 are female. The town is built along the world famous
River Moy, one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in Europe, which attracts a huge influx of visitors each year. In 2008 Ballina was officially launched as the Salmon Capital of Europe. Indeed, the River Moy is internationally acknowledged as an exceptional salmon fishery, producing several thousand salmon to the rod annually. The famous Ridge Pool, the salmon anglers’ paradise, is located in the heart of the town. Continued Over the Page

The salmon is also at the centre of one of the west’s longest established Summer events, Ballina’s salmon festival. In July this year, as in years past, the town will come alive in a frenzy of activity. Over the past five years it has developed into one of Ireland's major festivals, providing a week long feast of free entertainment for the entire family - music, song, theatre, art, heritage, culture and novelty events. Foreign visitors view and experience what is best about Mayo during this spectacular week. The town’s newest bridge, Salmon Weir Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge over the River Moy from Barrett St. to Ridge Pool Rd. The bridge, which was designed to resemble a fishing rod, was opened in July 2009. The town is well serviced with its road, rail and bus network and is just approximately 50 miles from Knock International Airport. Ballina is the principle service centre in North Mayo. While there are a number of national multiple retailers within the town centre, including
Tesco, Penneys, Easons, Shaws, Dunnes Stores, Boots, Holland & Barrett, Costa Coffee and others, which are all key anchors and attract customers to the town, the traditional businesses are still a major attraction, and continue to provide locals and visitors with an unrivalled range of products and services.Ballina has a very lively entertainment scene with ample choice when it comes to eating out and hitting the town. A long-standing reputation for being a great place to eat out, Ballina has a wide variety of restaurants serving Irish, European and Asian cuisine. It also has a fine choice in late night bars and night clubs. The newly-refurbished Arts Centre, with state of the art facilities and 200-seater auditorium is attracting top national and international acts, in addition to providing a facility for local performances and a wide range of social and cultural events. The Jackie Clarke Museum and unique gardens is now attracting additional tourists to the town and the Mary Robinson Interpretive Centre should be a major tourist and cultural addition to the region in the future.

Black is Black 541,237 used cars changed hands in Ireland during the first six months of 2014, an increase of 19% on the same period in 2013, according to findings of the Carzone.ie Motoring Report. The report is a bi-annual index that tracks trends in both the new and used car markets in Ireland. Data has been compiled using the 100 million searches carried out on Carzone.ie during the first six months of the year, vehicle transactions listed and an in-depth sur-
vey of over 2,500 motorists nationwide. Once again, the results reveal that German car marques remain most popular among Irish car buyers, with the Volkswagen Golf topping the list as most searched for used car model on the market. The BMW 5 Series ranks in second place, followed by the BMW 3 Series, the Ford Focus, the Audi A4 and the Volkswagen Passat. Overall, BMW is the most searched for marque, ahead of Volkswagen and
29
Audi. In line with previous reports and despite diesel prices stabilising, the top two financial concerns for motorists are still fuel costs and the price of road tax. Over 81% of Irish motorists continue to opt for diesel models, indicating a desire for better fuel economy. Although some 77% of those surveyed commute less than 100 kilometres per working day with over 50% travelling less than 25 kilometres, the desire for hybrid vehicles is not yet prevalent

with less than 1% declaring they would consider purchasing a hybrid or electric power model for their next car. The report shows a significant increase in Irish motorists opting for luxury used German car brands. Figures for the first six months of 2014 show a 27% increase in sales of Audi, followed by a 25% spike in BMW sales whiles Mercedes-Benz sales have grown by almost 24%. When searching for a car, almost a quarter of buyers (22%) choose black as their colour preference, followed by silver, red and grey. Of some concern, the report highlights that while the majority
of motorists claim to understand new legislation regarding mobile phone usage, a worrying 91.5% have witnessed another driver making a call or sending a text from a hand-held phone while driving. Commenting on the findings of the report, Warren Cray, general manager at Carzone.ie, said: “Without doubt, these results point to a level of optimism in the market as used car transactions continue to rise. More than 100 million searches were carried out on Carzone.ie so far this year alone and we expect this figure to continue rising for the remainder of 2014”.
SIMI Review T he Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), in association with DoneDeal, has released their Third Quarter Motor Industry Review for 2014. The Review was compiled by Economist Jim Power using data from Revenue, CSO, NVDF and RSA as well as SIMI and DoneDeal for the first three quarters of 2014 covering sales, job creation, fuel prices and vehicle safety. It also surveyed Motor Industry businesses on issues currently affecting them. The Review shows that the upturn in the Motor Industry continued in the third quarter with sales for 2014 now looking likely to exceed 95,000, which is 15% ahead of the Industry’s expectations 12 months ago. This increase has seen the Exchequer collect €902million in VRT and VAT from new and used car sales during the first 9 months of the year which is 27.9% higher than the corresponding period in 2013. The Review highlighted a 3.9% decrease in petrol costs, a 4.6% decrease in diesel costs and a 2.8% decrease in the cost of a new car. Motor insurance costs, though, have risen by 6.7% compared with 12 months ago. Alan Nolan, Director General of SIMI, said; “The decisions taken in the recent Budget have laid the foundations for continued steady growth in the Motor Industry during 2015. The
better business environment in the sector this year has resulted directly from the improved consumer confidence and we would be very hopeful that the market will continue to grow in response to the more positive outlook for consumers in the wake of the Budget. A key contributor in the midyear boost in sales was the “142” registration plate from the 1st of July with sales for the second half of this year already representing over 30% of new car sales in 2014 compared to 17% for the second half of 2012, the last year under the single plate system. Economist Jim Power, who is author of the SIMI Motor Industry Review, said; “It was vitally important that Budget 2015 did nothing to upset the auto market, as it increasingly makes a significant contribution to the Exchequer finances and employment. Budget 2015 contained nothing directly related to the Motor Industry, but indirectly it should help to support the market in 2015 by giving some support to consumer confidence and spending power, and by strengthening the emerging recovery in the economy. The evidence available at the moment suggests that the market could grow by close to 120,000 in 2015.”

Energy Mythbusting Is it cheaper to have the heating on all day? This one divides opinion. Some say you'll save energy, and therefore money, by only having the heating on when it's required. Using a timer is best, because your thermostat is designed to turn your heating system on and off to keep your home at the temperature you set it. However it's a grey area. Another school of thought says it is best to keep the heating on at a low temperature all day, turning all radiator valves up to the max, and
the boiler down to the minimum. Should I keep the hot water boiler on all the time, or turn it on and off as needed? If you have a gas, oil or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) central heating system, it will always be cheaper to time the system so the hot water comes on only when required. However, if you use an electrical immersion heater and have an night-time tariff (where energy is cheaper at night), it's cheaper to heat your water during the night. Make sure your tank is well insulated to prevent it cooling during the day, though.
S
hould you keep your heating on all day on low? And what about painting radiators black? We've gone on an energy mythbusting mission, so you can find out if common tricks to cut energy usage really work. Here are the key questions you asked, with their answers below. Should I leave the heating on low all day, or turn the thermostat up and down?
Is it cheaper to use radiators or electric heaters? Electric heaters are one of the most expensive forms of heating. Generally, the cheapest way is using an efficient oil/gas central heating system, with a full set of thermostatic radiator valves, a room thermostat and a timer. Do phone or laptop chargers still use electricity when they're plugged in, but not connected to the device? Try to unplug chargers when not in use. A lot of devices draw power
when plugged in and not in use. This is sometimes known as 'vampire power'. Using this standby power can be easily avoided by switching devices off at the wall. Electric providers say on its website that leaving chargers in a socket uses energy (if the charger is warm, it's using energy). It says that some chargers (including those from Apple) turn themselves off when not connected to a device. It adds that, generally, branded chargers are more efficient than nonbranded ones. Should I run appliances at night? If you're on an night-time tariff, you'll pay less during the night, but a higher rate than average during the day. But if you're on another tariff, it doesn't make any difference.

Val McLoughlin exhibition: Figure-Ground Ballina-based artist Val McLoughlin latest exhibition is showing throughout October and November. McLoughlin uses life drawings and paintings to explore the potential dichotomy of figure-ground perception. The work conducts the viewer through different approaches from more formal life studies to developed abstract work. He explains: “FigureGround organization is a type of perceptual grouping which is a vital necessity for recognising objects through vision. In Gestalt psychology it is known a identifying a figure from the background. The concept of figure and ground depends on the observer not on the item itself.” Admission free, all welcome. The Six Marys written and performed by Jean Farrell Ballina Arts Centre hosts this one-
woman-show on Thursday 6th November, at 8pm. It is a comical yet poignant look at life, from childhood in the 1950s, to the present day. It draws very much on the influence of religion as taught by the nuns--preparing young Irish Catholic schoolgirls to imitate the virtues of the Virgin Mary. They were to be meek, humble and pure. How well did this help them cope with the huge social changes of the following decades? Were the fanciful dreams of youth fulfilled? This journey of self-discovery is interspersed with well-known hit songs from the various eras, sung by Catherine Gallagher. Tough Drug Laws Have No Impact On Use - Report S evere criminal penalties on drug taking makes no difference to the level of substance use in a country, a Government report has indicated. The first Home Office study of the issue based on international evidence has caused a split within the coalition, with Lib Dems supporting its proposed reforms and the Conservatives opposing them. It found "no apparent correlation between the 'toughness' of a country's approach and the prevalence of adult drugs use". "There is evidence from Portugal of improved health prospects for users, though these cannot be attributed to decriminalisation alone," the report said. "There are indications that decriminalisation can reduce the burden on criminal justice systems." It also found worse health outcomes in the Czech Republic after possession was criminalised, and no evidence of lower use. Danny Kushlick, founder of Transform Drug Policy Foundation, called the report a "historic moment" in drugs policy. "For the first time in over 40 years the Home Office has
admitted that enforcing tough drug laws doesn't necessarily reduce levels of drug use," he said. Although it was completed several months ago, the report has been kept under wraps to be released alongside another study which recommends socalled legal highs be criminalised. The Lib Dems have long supported a review of Britain's drugs policy and the party's minister in the Home Office, Norman Baker MP, told Sky News he backs its findings. "We're very clear that what we need to do is move towards a health based approach - to stop criminalising people unfairly and to make sure that we don't lock people up, but rather deal with it as a health issue," he was quoted as saying. But a Home Office spokesperson said: "This Government has absolutely no intention of decriminalising drugs. "Our drugs strategy is working and there is a long-term downward trend in drug misuse in the UK." But the Home Office is giving strong consideration to the report backing the criminalisation of so-called legal highs, which are sold online and in high street "head" shops.
Both coalition parties back a blanket ban on their sale, which has been welcomed by campaigners including Maryon Stewart, whose daughter, Hester, died in 2009 after taking a lethal cocktail of alcohol and the legal substance GBL. She was quoted on Sky News: "In that time, there've been as many crime prevention ministers as there have years, and it's been a really difficult journey.
"I think everyone agrees that there needs to be change, what's happening right now isn't working." An opinion poll in The Sun suggests for the first time, most Britons believe the war on drugs can never be won. A total of 71% of those surveyed said the war had failed, while 51% said it will always be doomed. The survey found 65% supported a review of drugs policy.
Man Tells Obama: Don't Touch My Girlfriend
A voter tries to embarrass Barack Obama at a polling booth - but the President responds by kissing the man's girlfriend. Barack Obama enjoyed an amusing exchange with two voters after a man told him: "Don't touch my girlfriend". The light-hearted discussion unfolded as the President cast an early ballot in Chicago. A young woman, Aia Cooper, was voting next to Mr Obama when her boyfriend, Mike Jones, joked: "Mr President, don't touch my girlfriend." The President, laughing, replied: "There's an example of a brother just embarrassing me for no reason." Ms Cooper apologised, but Mr Obama imagined how she would retell the encounter to her friends. "I can't believe Mike, he is such a fool. I was just mortified... But fortunately, the President was nice about it, so it's all right," he said. And the leader of the free world had the last laugh when he defied Mr Jones' warning and gave Ms Cooper a peck on the cheek. "Give me a kiss and give him something to talk about," he said. "Now he's really jealous."
Prototype Flying Car Takes To The Skies
Board Game Operation's Inventor Needs Surgery The cash-strapped Illinois man is not entitled to royalties from the best-selling game, whose rights he sold for just $500. The man who invented the board game Operation half a century ago now needs help paying for a real operation. Friends of cash-strapped John Spinello have launched a crowd-funded project to raise money for his medical expenses. The 77-year-old Illinois man needs $25,000 (ÂŁ15,400) for oral surgery not covered by his insurance. He sold the rights to Operation, which he invented as an industrial design student at the University of Illinois in 1964, for just $500. Now owned by Hasbro, the classic electrified game is estimated to have generated at least $40m in sales since its launch a year later. Mr Spinello is not entitled to royalties. His friends Tim Walsh and Peggy Brown have launched the appeal on the website CrowdRise. The fundraiser reads: "John has had a good life, but has admitted to us that he is struggling to pay his bills and is in need of a medical procedure without sufficient insurance coverage." Mr Spinello did not appear as daunted by his predicament as "Cavity Sam", the frightened patient in his beloved game. He told Huffington Post: "Look, everyone
needs medical care. "I prefer not to dwell on that aspect and focus more on the joy that the game has brought to so many over the years." Players of Operation must keep their hands steady to remove a broken
heart, funny bone, spare ribs and other body parts from Cavity Sam. His red nose lights up and a loud buzzer sounds when the competitors' tweezers touch the metal edges.
A prototype of the world's most advanced flying car has taken to the skies. The AeroMobil 3.0 features a high-tech cockpit and wings that can fold in behind the cabin. It was unveiled at an innovations conference in Vienna where AeroMobil's chief executive Juraj Vaculik said it could "change personal transport on a global scale". The company has been working on the vehicle for more than 25 years, and the latest iteration is its most advanced prototype yet. Its maiden flight took place last week and the vehicle is now undergoing a series of flighttesting exercises. It has been designed for typical road use as well as air travel, meaning it can fit in a typical car parking space and be driven on roads. The AeroMobil needs a 50-metre grass strip for takeoff and landing, much less than a typical plane. The creators say it is primarily aimed at developing countries where extensive road infrastructure is not in place.

Red State, Blue State: 10 Tips for Feuding Families
It's normal to disagree It may help to know that arguments aren't necessarily a sign that your family is dysfunctional. "If you are willing to get into any depth of a relationship with anyone and be genuine, you will eventually run into areas in which the two of you don't see eye to eye," says Simon Rego, PsyD, director of psychology training at Montefiore Medical Center, in the Bronx, N.Y. The same is true, of course, in family relationships, he says. Although there usually is less conflict in superficial relationships, Rego says, "You don't get the richness of human connection."
Don't drink too much Jennifer S. (not her real name), an editor and mom from New Jersey, learned this lesson the hard way when her liberal family teamed up on her beloved—but conservative—stepdad during a boozy post-9/11 argument that ended with him leaving the house. She didn't witness the scene, but knew it took a while for the family to heal or even dare to get together. But a recent vacation was a great success, she says, largely because they avoided getting into touchy subjects after having a few drinks. Recognize your triggers As you prepare for your next fam-

ily gathering, think about what's happened in the past, and also about what others do that triggers you to react, says Julie Glovin, a clinical social worker from Worcester, Mass. "What feelings come up when you get triggered?" Glovin says. "Do you have a history of not being validated in your thoughts? Not heard? What happens to you physically and behaviorally? Does your stomach hurt? Do you want to cry? Do you reach for another glass of wine?" Identifying your triggers can help you control your anger. Take a time-out If you're starting to feel angry or threatened, it's a good idea to take a time-out to collect your thoughts. "Ideally we give our kids time-outs so they learn to manage their feelings; we need to do the same for ourselves," Glovin says. "Remind yourself that you are an adult and your thoughts are valid." It's OK to disengage and say, "I don't think this is a good conversation to have—I'm getting too worked up."

"They are deserving of respect....It's not that they're Darth Vader, it's just a different perspective." Don't get caught up in thinking, "they're stubborn or they're racist or they're sexist or they're homophobic or they're so righty or they're so lefty," Rego says. Control your reaction Much as we would like to, we can't control how other people behave—but we can control how we react. "Family relationships fall back on old habits, so someone might try to goad you by saying, ‘You're too sensitive,'" Glovin says. "Take a moment. Is it true? Do you agree?"
