ccording to a reliable source, the Irish government has been secretly printing a new currency for the past four months, to be prepared should the eurozone collapse. Apparently the Irish mint have fired up the printing presses again and started preparing for the roll out of the Punt, or some equivalent, across Ireland. This insider, who makes regular deliveries to the mint, has told us that they are stacking the Punt in a warehouse in the Sandyford Industrial Estate and they have been working flat out over the last few weeks in preparation. Such has been the ferocity of the speculation that new notes have been printed, a parliamentary question was tabled by Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming only four weeks ago, when he asked Finance Minister Michael Noonan when was the last time Irish punts were printed. Since the rumour first began during the summer, the Department of Finance and the Central Bank both issued strong denials to the media that any fresh national currency was being readied in case of a break-up of the eurozone. Mr Fleming asked Mr Noonan “when the Irish Central Bank last printed Irish punts currency; and if he will make a statement on the matter”. In response, Mr Noonan said: “Irish pound bank notes were last produced in 2001. Euro notes and coins came into circulation on January 1, 2002. Irish

pound bank notes ceased to be legal tender on 9th February, 2002.” Being very cynical, I have to wonder if there is a difference between an Irish “POUND” and an Irish “PUNT.” Is Noonan engaging in semantics? So, the government have denied it! . . that's fine so. But didn't the last bunch also deny the IMF were coming to town?
My guess is that all eurozone countries are doing this. It's logical, it's prudent. Who would want to be caught with their trousers down should things go very wrong quickly. It's possible the newly printed currencies will never be used (bar Greece most likely) but better safe than sorry. It makes perfect sense to be printing new currencies. Of course, the economic implications
of such an event is an entirely different matter. Some suggest interest rates would shoot up and we have no idea what the relative value of our money would be. Might we see Daniel O Connell replaced with Mary McAleese or maybe WB Yeats will replace James Joyce and maybe there might be room on a new IR£50 for the world’s biggest rock band, U2.

Drink nightmare of 10-year-olds as 20 children a week need medical care CHILDREN as young as 10 are being admitted to hospital every year following drink- and drug-fuelled binges. Up to 20 children a week require medical treatment after drinking alcohol and taking a wide range of drugs; while substance abuse among 15- to 24-year-olds claimed 42 lives last year. An Irish Independent investigation reveals that the numbers being admitted to hospital have remained largely static since 2005, with experts last night warning that public health prevention programmes did not seem to be working. An analysis of deaths among drug users supplied by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows that teenagers are dying from ingesting a deadly cocktail of drink and drugs. Data from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) also shows that abuse is rife across Irish society, and not
confined to poorer areas. Information on the number of young people attending hospital emergency departments is not available, but the numbers are likely to be far higher than those deemed so ill that they have to be admitted. The data shows: A total of 18,617 people of all ages were admitted to hospital for alcohol abuse last year; 6,872 were private patients or those without a medical card and, of the total figure, 5,790 were women. Some 562 were treated for poisoning. Another 3,800 were treated for 'mental and behavioural disorders' after ingesting heroin, cannabis, cocaine, hallucinogens like LSD and other drugs. A total of 928 people aged 10-19 were hospitalised last year. Some 196 were aged 10-14, and the remainder were aged 1519. A total of 290 people aged 15-24 have died from drugs and alcohol. Last year, the
figure was 42, which breaks down to 29 killed by drugs and 13 by alcohol abuse. Since 2005, 6,521 young people have needed hospital treatment -- more than 1,000 a year. Hospital consultant Patrick Plunkett said last night that many patients were a danger to themselves and others. "Alcohol is the big thing, because it's readily accessible. We do see the occasional teenager using heroin or methadone," he added. Drugs Minister Roisin Shortall said there was a need to "get the prevention message across" to young people. "The central aim is to reduce the amount of alcohol we drink," she added. "This will involve a wider societal change of attitudes to break the cycle of over-consumption of alcohol. "The figures released now should serve as a stark warning to those young people who drink alcohol and use drugs."
Spotlight on Lough Eske Castle & Donegal in San Francisco TOURISM operators from around the island of Ireland – including Lough Eske Castle – travelled to the US recently to participate in Tourism Ireland’s ‘Flavors of Ireland’ sales blitzes which took place in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The busy schedule of B2B events included trade and consumer promotions, interactive presentations to travel agents as well as media networking, providing an excellent opportunity for the participants to showcase their product to the hundreds of key decision-makers they met in the two cities. Joe Byrne, Tourism Ireland’s executive vice-president for North America, said: “North America is an extremely important market for tourism to the island of Ireland and we have had a busy promotional programme in place right throughout 2011. The increase in visitor numbers from North America of +12.6% for the first eight months
of the year is welcome news indeed and is an encouraging basis on which Tourism Ireland, together with our industry partners, will build. The Irish Government’s recently announced funding for co-operative marketing activity will see our promotional programme in the US extended, ensuring that we – together with our partners – reach an even greater audience of potential holidaymakers this fall/winter. “Our Flavors of Ireland events, where we talk directly to influential media contacts, travel agents and tour operators, and tell them what makes Donegal such a fantastic holiday destination, provide us with an excellent opportunity to grow business further from the US in 2012 and beyond. They are an excellent opportunity for our partners from Ireland to showcase their product to important decision-makers in California and to encourage them to include the island of Ireland in their future holiday programmes.”

Mayo politicians critical of media election coverage McDonnell said: “Some of the potentially finest candidates we could have produced countrywide for this office were afraid to go forward as they didn’t want to undergo the extraordinary personal scrutiny that the candidates had to endure”. Meanwhile, in the aftermath of the result, there is much speculation about Sean Gallagher’s political future, with suggestions that he may be a FF candidate in the European Elections three years from now. He may also stand for FF in Louth. Some reports suggest he may run as an Independent or start his own political party. The other candidates will have some adjusting to do over the coming weeks after a long and gruelling campaign .

Drug and alcohol use within the Traveller Community THE Lakeside Centre in Ballyshannon recently hosted a unique event attended by Traveller organisations from across the region including Donegal, Omagh, Strabane, Sligo, Leitrim and Derry. This ground-breaking, cross border seminar entitled ‘Times, They are a Changing,’ was organised to discuss the changing patterns of drug and alcohol use among the Traveller Community and to highlight the supports required. The seminar provided a unique opportunity for service providers to listen, hear from and share ideas and experiences directly with Travellers and Traveller organisations representatives from both sides of the border. 80 people attended the event which was organised by the Donegal Travellers Project with the support of the HSE, the Public Health Agency NI and the Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT) ‘Time IVA Change’ Border Region Alcohol Project. Funding for the event was provided by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA programme. Key note speaker, Dr Marie Claire Van Hout, Lecturer, School of Health Sciences, Waterford IT outlined the findings of her research into Traveller drug and alcohol misuse. She described problematic alcohol use among Travellers as stemming from day to day discrimination, social exclusion, boredom, compromised opportunity, lack of education and employment. In her research, Dr Van Hout quotes a male Traveller:“Re need to come sponses from everyone in the us the Travellers, the community…that’s Traveller organisations… we need to know where to go for help… where there’s a friendly face and someone who understands…someone to listen to me.” To illus-

Nobody can deny that the most recent campaign has been one of the most closely scrutinised campaigns to date, with no candidate escaping the glare of the press and daily interventions about their private and professional lives. Deputy Calleary said he viewed some of the media’s coverage of candidates personal lives as “depressing”. “The media campaign during the election has been utterly disgraceful. The seven candidates have had the courage to put their names on the ballet paper and the media thinks it is its role to destroy them personally, which is depressing”, said Deputy Calleary. WHILE the Presidential Election is well and truly over and supporters of Michael D. Higgins and, indeed, all the people of Ireland, look forward to his period in the Aras, the reverberations from the gruelling campaign will continue for some time to come. Long before the result some Mayo politicians, in a press survey, voiced their clear disapproval of many aspects of the campaign. Indeed two Mayo politicians described as “disgraceful, and an affront to democracy” the way the media treated some of the candidates. Both Deputy Dara Calleary and Al McDonnell, councillor (FF) said they were concerned that the continous “witchhunts” would deter candidates from par-

Spillane a true blue ... for a day anyway
IT'S not something you see every day: Kerry football legend Pat Spillane changing his allegiance and donning a Dublin jersey to play a match at Croke Park. But never fear the change of heart was only temporary and was in aid of charity. The Kerry star was taking part in a match at GAA
headquarters to raise funds for the Alan Kerins Projects, a charity that supports young people from vulnerable communities in Zambia through education, sport, recreation and creativity. Many other sports starts and celebrities were out in force for the match, which saw the old rivalry reignited between Dublin and Galway. In the end, Galway beat Dublin by four points but it was hardly a competitive match as at the final whistle, there had been more than 40 players on the pitch. The Galway team, managed by John O'Mahony, included Hector O hEochagain, Des Bishop, Darragh O Se and Mick Galwey among others and the Dublin team, managed by Pat Gilroy, included the Brogan brothers, Bernard Dunne, Ray Houghton, Brent Pope, Ken Doherty, Tony Ward and Jason Sherlock. As well as sporting stars and celebs the event also allowed members of the public who raised €2,500 to play on the hallowed Croke Park pitch. Around 50 people raised enough money and got to participate in the match alongside their sporting icons. The charity is now well on its way to raising in excess of the €100,000 target.

Tobacco firms 'push up prices despite no tax hikes' TOBACCO companies have been accused of trying to lobby various finance ministers into not imposing budget tax hikes on cigarettes -- in order to profit from their own price increases. The Health Service Executive (HSE) said it wanted "at least" a 50 cent increase in the cost of a packet of 20 cigarettes and other tobacco products in the December Budget. In a letter to Finance Minister Michael Noonan it produced an analysis of Government tax increases on tobacco products -- and the hikes by companies themselves -- over the course of a decade. It showed that in 2000 a packet of cigarettes was €4.77. And while the Budget spared the "old reliable" from any tax increase that year, the trade put on another 10c. In 2001, the government lobbed another 13c on to a packet of cigarettes but the trade hiked the price by a total of 21c. In 2004 and 2005, there were no tax rises on cigarettes but the tobacco companies added 30c to the price over the course of the two years. The letter from HSE public health director Dr Patrick Doorley said the evidence was that the tobacco companies lobbied against government taxes so that "they could reap the rewards directly of any price increase which they thought the market could bear". He added: "It is also notable that the tobacco industry has maintained its
own percentage share of the price and, hence profits, throughout the world. "At a time when many businesses have to make significant sacrifices in the face of our economic downturn, it appears the tobacco industry is working assiduously to protect its margins. "Their strategy of constantly increasing prices, irrespective of their rhetoric on smuggling, needs to be examined in light of the forthcoming Budget." The international evidence fully supported such a measure and claims from the tobacco industry that tax increases inevitably lead to increased smuggling were not borne out by either the evidence or their own behaviour in regard to price hikes, Mr Doorley added. Commenting on the HSE's analysis, a spokesperson for Irish Tobacco Manufacturers' Advisory Committee said: "Over €1bn has been lost to the Irish economy in the past two years because of the huge number of cigarettes consumed in Ireland that avoid paying Irish taxes. "This money is not only being lost to the Irish economy but it is helping to fund criminal gangs across the country. The current cost of a packet of cigarettes is €8.65 per pack of 20, of which 79pc goes to the Government or about €6.83. "This is €6.83 that the Government will lose out on per packet if they push more people towards the illegal cigarette market with increases in excise."

It’s not cool man:
CANNABIS causes chaos in the brain as nerve activity becomes uncoordinated and inaccurate, a study has found. The results may help explain links between cannabis and schizophrenia, scientists believe. Researchers at the University of Bristol measured the brain responses of rats given a drug that mimics the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. They found that the drug completely disrupted co-ordinated brain waves across the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. The first brain region plays a key role in the formation of memories. The second is essential to planning, decision making and social behaviour. Both are heavily implicated in schizophrenia.
Rats exposed to the cannabis-like drug became unable to make accurate decisions when navigating through a maze. The research is reported today in the Journal of Neuroscience. Study leader Dr Matt Jones said: "Marijuana abuse is common among sufferers of schizophrenia and recent studies have shown that the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana can induce some symptoms of schizophrenia in healthy volunteers. "These findings are therefore important for our understanding of psychiatric diseases, which may arise as a consequence of 'disorchestrated brains' and could be treated by retuning brain activity." Co-author Michal Kucewicz, also from the University of Bristol, said: "These results are an important step forward in our understanding of how rhythmic activity in the brain underlies thought processes in health and disease." The research was part of a Medical Research Council-funded collaboration between the university and drug company Eli Lilly & Co.

Author Zoë Devlin enjoyed a hugely successful launch night at the National Botanic Gardens on Tuesday 25 October, when her new book ‘Wildflowers of Ireland – A Personal Record’ (published by The Collins Press, price €29.99), was officially launched by Gerald Fleming, Head Of General Forecasting Division, at Met Éireann and RTÉ’s longest-serving weather broadcaster. A great night was enjoyed by all who attended and Gerald had some very kind words to say about the book, he equated it with his work on meteorology which concerns nature at its least benign, whereas Zoë's work shows nature at its most benign. Also speaking at the launch was Dr Matthew Jebb Director of the National Botanic Gardens, who Zoë credited with being a huge help in the development of the book. As anyone who has seen this beautifully produced book will agree a work of this calibre and with this amount of detail on the wildflowers of Ireland was long overdue. With this book Zoë aimed to present all the wildflowers in such a way so those without botanical knowledge learn to identify them and gain a greater understanding of the subject. Ireland’s countryside teems with wildflowers, each an intrinsic part of the landscape and of an ecosystem that supports birds, insects and other wildlife. When Zoë was shown a wild orchid by a relative, the late Dr Kathleen Lynn, it sparked a lifelong interest in wildflowers. This beautifully presented book is her personal record of Ireland’s wildflowers, as seen and photographed by Zoë, who is passionate about this often-overlooked part of our natural heritage. Descriptions and detailed photographs
of plants are embellished with herbal and literary references, and related Irish folklore. Over 400 commonly found wildflowers are described and some not-so-common and even rare species such as Spring Gentian, which is only found in certain areas of the West of Ireland and is synonymous with the Burren in County Clare and the Round-leaved Sundew – a native plant whose leaves digest insects! ‘Wildflowers of Ireland – A Personal Record’ creates a new awareness and wider picture of the world of wildflowers in Ireland without being over scientific or bogged down by terminology. In presenting this book, Zoë says: ‘Conservation of our wildflowers is of the utmost importance as they are now facing threats on several different sides’, and she expresses a hope that ‘through education and awareness of the diversity of our wildflowers, perhaps, just perhaps, the tide can be held back a little longer’. 'Wildflowers of Ireland - A Personal Record' is a must for any gardener, nature lover and anyone who wants to appreciate the native beauty of Ireland.

Freewheeling past €7k for Motor Neurone Disease!
SEVEN cycling enthusiasts from Galway, Mayo and Roscommon completed a gruelling 109km cycle to raise funds and awareness for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA). “Team Freewheelers” was made up of Adrian, Padraig, Gary, Seamus, Jarlath, Des and David and on the 11th July they began their cycle of the
toughest stage of the Tour de France; the L’Etape du Tour – Alpe d’Huez. Preparations and training for this mammoth challenge started early this year as did the fundraising. Numerous events took place in the build up to the cycle including bag packs, table quizzes, church gate collections and an 8km sponsored run in Cong, Co. Mayo. It was all worth it though as the group raised a fantastic €7738.70!! The proceeds raised will go towards helping people with Motor Neurone Disease; an incurable neurological condition that leaves people unable to do everyday things that the rest of us take for granted, walking, talking and swallowing may become virtually impossible. The IMNDA is the primary support organisation in Ireland providing care for people with MND, their families and carers To provide these essential services the IMNDA depends heavily on fundraising & donations which provide over 75% of overall income. For more information please visit www.imnda.ie / freefone 1800 403 403.

While Essex residents are renowned for their image obsessed attitudes the scenes and relationships in the show are quite obviously dramatized in order to attract viewers. Despite this, we, myself included are reluctant to miss a single episode and follow the twists and turns of each characters life as though it were our own. For many it appears that reality TV is a means of escape- a break from all the stress, financial pressure and responsibility of life. By watching the daily drama and challenges faced and overcome by contestants on such shows it allows viewers to both empathise and sympathise with the on-screen figures while also forget about the drama unfolding in their own lives. Many reality shows focus on competition- be it musical, cookery or sporting talent contestants are encouraged to reach their potential under the direction of mentors and then battle it out for the coveted prize. While undoubtedly it provides excellent television as rivalry and the desire to win erupts recently questions have been raised as to how damaging such competition may be psychologically to the competitors. These contestants often enter such shows desperate to escape the troubled times or challenged past they may have experienced yet while knowing directors choose only the happy and dramatic moments to broadcast it appears that life backstage, behind the cameras is quite the opposite. If we are to make our decisions and compare our lifestyles to onscreen antics we will inevitably end up disappointed. While reality TV is typically entertaining, humorous and addictive it is essential that we as able human being of the developed 21st century society realise that in fact such shows are far from real.

Owenmore Gaels open new pitch in Collooney
Mary McAleese with Martin Cannon
A
MASSIVE community effort came to fruition last week-end when Owenmore Gaels GAA club opened their magnificent new grounds at Collooney. It marked the culmination of a long campaign to provide the club with state of the art facilities and the occasion was well and truly honoured. President Mary McAleese, in one of her last official engagements before she left office, visited Collooney last Monday to officially open the new Park which is being named in honour of local girl, Bernadette Connolly, who was murdered in 1970, and her late father, Gerry, who was an iconic figure in local GAA circles up to his death ten years ago. The first game at the new Park took place last Sunday when the Sligo team which won the Connacht senior Championship in 2007

took on the Sligo All-Ireland junior winning team of 2010.The teams were be led out by Stefan Connolly and Glen McCormack, nephews of Bernadette Connolly. On the day the experience of the 2007 team was enough to see off the threat of the All Ireland winning Juniors. The cermony included the unveiling of a plaque bearing the Park's name, Pairc Ui Chonghaile. Bernadette Connolly's brother, Tommy, and RTE Sports commentator, Marty Morrisey, who was involved in some of the club's major fund raising ventures, officiated at the ceremony. Other speakers included the Chairman of Owenmore Gaels, Martin Cannon, and Chairman of Sligo County Board, Cyril Feehily. A parade led by the Sligo Pipe Band and children from the Gaels' under-age teams preceded the big game.

Cowell: Tweet for X Factor faves US X Factor judge Simon Cowell says he wants fans to use Twitter to vote for their favourite contestants. The Fox show has announced that from November 2, fans can cast a ballot by sending a direct message over Twitter to the official X Factor account. Viewers can also cast a ballot on the show's Facebook page and its official website. "It's a sign of the times," said Cowell, who believes more votes will come in as a result of expanding the process. "Sites like Twitter and Facebook give (the audience) a much bigger voice." Aside from social media, votes can be sent the old fashioned way, by making a phone call or sending a text message and by using a special App created for Verizon Android devices. Cowell uses the internet to gauge what people think of the series so far. He goes online during and after the show to see what people are saying and plans to join Twitter once he learns "how to type quicker". The US show is averaging about 12.5 million viewers an episode, but one thing that has hindered it in recent weeks is the Major League Baseball World Series. Games on Fox have pre-empted the show leading to confusion among viewers and causing some DVR devices to not record X Factor. Cowell says the conflict has been frustrating but they "knew in advance this was going to happen". He believes the ratings have been consistent so far and word of mouth will get people to tune in. On Tuesday's first live show, five acts were cut leaving 12 remaining contestants. With the competition heating up, so has the tension among its judges, who are each mentoring a class of contestants. Cowell has the girls, LA Reid is mentoring the boys, Paula Abdul is helping the groups and Nicole Scherzinger has the solo acts over 30.
Teens 'value net use more than TV' TEENAGERS would be more willing to give up watching TV than to stop using their mobiles or the internet, according to new research. More than a quarter of 12 to 15-year-olds interviewed said they would miss their phones (28%) and one in four (25%) said they would miss internet access compared to fewer than one in five (18%) for TV. It is the first time teenagers have chosen their phones and the internet over TV, according to media regulator Ofcom, which conducted the survey and found 24% would miss TV the most when the same question was asked last year. Nearly all (95%) 12-15year-olds now have internet access at home through a PC or laptop, up from 89% in 2010 and 77% in 2007. Half (50%) of 12 to 15-year-olds with a smartphone said they visited social networking sites weekly, up from 33% in 2010. Nearly a quarter of teenagers (23%) - 30% of teenage girls - said they knew someone who had been bullied through their mobile. The report also raised safety concerns, finding 28% of 12 to 15-year-olds and 17% of eight to 11-year-olds had relatively open social networking profiles, open to friends of friends. Cowell says Abdul claims to have the hardest category to mentor, but disagrees with her. He mentored the groups in the UK version of the show and "loved doing it".

Thousands log on to watch police THOUSANDS of people have viewed a police force's live video streaming of its work on the internet, in what is believed to be a world first. The behind-the-scenes look at life at Sussex Police attracted nearly 18,000 views in the first few hours and more than 500 comments and questions were posted. Using mobile phones, laptops and a free, live video streaming application, the "day in the life" account of the force's activities has been heralded as the first of its kind. As part of the day-long Sussex Police People: Live initiative, the public were able to join in with web chats and on Twitter using the hashtag #SPPlive. The public have been taken on an online tour of the police helicopter, viewed the Specialist Search Team diving at Shoreham Harbour and witnessed scenes of crime officer Chris Gee examining a car in Brighton. A series of officers and staff have also given an account of their daily duties, and viewers posted comments on a live webchat feed below the live
footage. The quality of the images varied and issues were experienced with sound and the webchat facility at times, with one commentator posting: "It's 2011 and this is the best quality video." Others were more complementary about the force's digital approach. Some live streams were muted for legal reasons but Sussex Police broadly aimed to broadcast the challenges its officers and staff face on a daily basis.
Chief Constable Martin Richards said the project aimed to "lift the lid on policing in 2011" at a time when questions were being asked about transparency of the police. Greater Manchester Police broke new ground last year by using Twitter to post details of every incident reported over a 24-hour period. However, Sussex Police's project is understood to be the first time any force in the world has broadcast live video streaming of its work.
Child sex abuse UK web content cut
A total of 87,000 web pages featuring images of child sexual abuse have been deleted over the past 15 years, according to a foundation which polices the internet. But while the proportion of criminal pages hosted in the UK has dropped significantly, foreign-hosted websites remain a problem and images are becoming increasingly extreme.
The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), based in Cambridge, is the UK's hotline for reporting criminal content online and is celebrating its 15th anniversary by highlighting the impact it has had after assessing 370,000 web pages and removing 87,000 containing criminal content. Chief executive Susie Hargreaves said the
foundation was proud of the work it had done so far but added that combating the continued threat remained a priority. She added: "Although we've had tremendous success domestically, child sexual abuse content on the internet is a problem the IWF and the industry are eager to tackle wherever it is hosted. "With the industry and partner hotlines' support we've been able to remove 87,000 web pages containing some of the worst content depicting the rape and sexual torture of young children and babies." Since the IWF was launched, the volume of UK-hosted child sexual abuse content has reduced from 18% in 1997 to less than 1% since 2003 but there is still a problem with child sexual abuse content hosted around the world. During its history 45% of worldwide web pages assessed and removed featured images of children aged 10 years and under, including babies. Over the past four years this figure has risen to 73.5%. The foundation says this suggests content is becoming more extreme and all reports to the IWF are assessed by a team of analysts who have an exemption within the law to enable them to view potentially criminal content. When child sexual abuse content is found and hosted within the UK, it is shared with the police and removed within hours thanks to the responsible actions of the online industry.

Priests bless manhole covers
TOWN Hall officials have asked priests to bless all the manhole covers in their town to stop them being stolen by scrap metal thieves. Councillors in Lodz, Poland, replaced all 4,000 of the town's manhole covers after the new ones had been blessed at a church service to keep them safe. Town sewage department president Wlodzmierz Tomaszewski explained: "Lodz's holy patron is Saint Faustina who walked the streets helping the poor and underprivileged. "By blessing the manhole covers we are blessing the streets and spreading her goodness," he added. But locals think the project is money down the drain. "If they think a few prayers will keep all those new manhole covers safe from thieves they need to think again. There won't be one left within a month," said one.

Woman hid husband's corpse A Colombian woman kept her dead husband's body hidden in her house for a month in the hope he would resurrect himself. Alba Yacue kept the corpse of her spouse, Lucio Chacue, in her home because he had told her that he would "come back to life". So when he died of unknown causes, aged 61, she hid the corpse in their house and waited for him to wake up again, reports local media. But officials grew suspicious after neighbours wondered where Mr Chacue had gone and alerted soldiers. When investigators arrived at the home, they found the body of the late Chacue in the master bedroom. "What was left of his body a month after his death was wrapped in a sheet," reported local newspaper La Nacion. "It was in a state of decomposition and gave off a nauseating odor that Alba Yacue endured in hopes of the possible resurrection of her companion, as he had promised her in life."
Mrs Yacue reportedly asked the La Paz Funeral Home to fix up the body, but then return it to her so that she could bury it in her back-
yard. Funeral director Evangelista Ome said: "In over 40 years of funerals, I have never seen anything of this
magnitude. It has left us perplexed." The couple come from the village of La Umbria in a rural area of Huila, in southwest Colombia.
Man claims woman turned into donkey
A topless drunk woman led police on a deathdefying car chase at speeds of up to 130mph in the US. And when officers finally managed to pull over Erin B Holdsworth - she leapt out of her car wearing nothing but fishnet stockings, a G-string and trainers. The scantily-clad speedster was then handcuffed and thrown in the back of a police car. Officers were forced to use stingers to puncture two of Holdsworth's tyres during the high-speed chase, which was caught on camera. The 28-year-old had to pull over a short time later. Holdsworth was arrested in Auburn Township, Ohio, and charged with drink driving, refusing a blood test, fleeing the police, criminal damage, speeding and reckless operation
A man accused of bestiality in Zimbabwe claimed he had been having sex with a woman who turned into a donkey. Sunday Moyo, 28, from Mandava township, claimed the animal was in fact a prostititute he had met in a nightclub. His unusual defence stunned a court in Zvishavane, reports the New Zimbabwe newspaper. Magistrate Mildred Matuvi heard how patrolling police officers found Moyo performing a sex act on the animal inside his yard just after 4am. The donkey, which had been tied by the neck to a tree, was lying on the ground. Although he was not formally asked to enter a plea, Moyo admitted the crime but told the magistrate a tale which reportedly provoked laughter in the courtroom. "Your worship, I only came to know that I was being intimate with a donkey when I got arrested," he began. "I had hired a prostitute and paid $20 for the service at Down Town night club and I don't know how she then became a donkey." The magistrate remanded Moyo in custody and ordered that he be examined by government psychiatrists.

8 Types of Cancer Linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis
RA and cancer risk If you have rheumatoid arthritis (RA), you may be at risk for certain cancers due to medication—or RA-related inflammation itself. The best thing you can do is to be aware, but don't worry excessively. "The risk of all of these is very, very low," says Stanley Cohen, MD, clinical professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and co-director of the division of rheumatology at Presbyterian Hospital, in Dallas. "When you
€1 59
look at the numbers, the relative risk is higher but the actual risk is low." RA has even been linked to a lower risk of some types of cancer. Lung cancer RA has been linked to lung-cancer risk. This may be due to smoking, which increases the chances of getting RA in the first place; research suggests, however, that even nonsmokers with RA have a slightly higher risk of getting lung cancer. "In the absence of smoking, the numbers are really small. But there is a higher risk due to inflammation and scarring in the lungs caused by RA," says Marc Hochberg, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and head of the division of rheumatology and clinical immunology at the University of Maryland Medical Center, in Baltimore. If you are a smoker, quit. RA patients
with lung disease should avoid taking methotrexate or leflunomide because these drugs may worsen lung damage, he adds. Skin cancer Research suggests that melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, is more likely in people who take TNF inhibitors, possibly because these drugs suppress the immune system. A 2007 study found that people with RA who take TNF inhibitors have more than double the risk of melanoma as RA patients who do not, although the actual risk was low (32 out of nearly 14,000 RA patients developed melanoma). People with RA also appear to be at higher risk of developing more treatable types of nonmelanoma skin cancer. A 2011 analysis found that people taking TNF inhibitors had a 45% greater chance of developing non-melanoma skin cancer. (The authors of both the 2007 and 2011 studies received money from pharmaceutical companies that make RA drugs. Myeloma Multiple myeloma is a relatively rare form of cancer that affects white blood cells called plasma cells; about 20,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2011, according to the American Cancer Society.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease More than any other ma-
lignancy, RA seems to increase the risk of nonHodgkin's lymphoma andHodgkin's disease, cancers of immune cells called lymphocytes.A 2003 study of more than 76,000 Swedish RA patients found they had a two- and three-times higher risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease, respectively, than people without RA. (Of the patients, 458 and 77 developed nonHodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease, respectively, over a 35-year period.) Moreover, a 2006 study found that those with the most severe RA symptoms are at the highest risk of lymphoma. Lymphoma linked to TNF-inhbitors There have been two cases of RA patients developing a rare and fatal type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma called hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma while taking Humira (adalimumab), a TNF inhibitor. Leukemia Data is mixed on the association of rheumatoid arthritis with leukemia. A Finnish study of almost 12,000 men and 35,000 women found higher rates of leukemia among men with RA compared to those without it, but there was not a significant increase among women with RA. Breast and colorectal cancer People with RA appear to have a slight advantage when it comes to breast and colorectal cancer; their risk is a bit lower than in people without RA. Prostate cancer Long-term usage of NSAIDs may also reduce the risk of death in men with RA who develop prostate cancer.

Can a Healthy Diet Help Psoriasis? By Megan Fennell
Losing weight may help Though many patients find that certain diets help clear their skin, or that certain foods aggravate it, no studies have established a definitive link between nutrition and psoriasis, says Neil Korman, MD, clinical director of the Murdough Family Center for Psoriasis in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. “There’s no ‘Psoriasis Diet,’ but people with psoriasis should try to eat a healthy diet,” he says.“We do know that people who are obese are at increased risk for psoriasis, and that losing weight may help improve your psoriasis.” “Achieving a healthy weight and eating more healthfully in general” are the goals when working with psoriasis patients, says Brenda Walsh, RD, an outpatient clinical dietitian at the Murdough center. Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease, she says, and “we know that weight loss can decrease levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), which is produced by the body in response to inflammation.” Increasing activity levels and dropping pounds can help lower CRP levels. What should you eat? Emphasizing foods that contain antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans, which can reduce inflammation, may also help, says Deirdre Earls, RD, a dietitian in private practice in Austin, Texas. A chronic psoriasis sufferer herself, Earls says she has had minimal out-
breaks since she started following a diet based on the University of Michigan Integrative Medicine Clinic’s Healing Foods Pyramid six and a half years ago. The diet has also helped her patients, Earls reports. Even if you can’t make all the changes, small tweaks (eating more vegetables, trading white bread and rice for whole grains, eliminating processed food) can improve your health. “Proceed at your own pace and focus on the positive choices you make,” advises Earls. Fruits and vegetables How much: Two to four servings of fruits and a minimum of five servings of vegetables (or more if you want) every day. Why: Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants that help control inflammation naturally, says Earls. “I recommend my patients select a variety of deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables when choosing antioxidantrich foods,” says Walsh. “Some examples are red bell peppers, pineapple, spinach, raspberries, blueberries, and carrots. I always recommend obtaining antioxidants from food, rather than in supplement form. This allows you to obtain all the benefits available in that food, not simply what happens to be extracted and packaged into a pill.” What's a serving: One apple, orange, or medium banana; 3/4 cup of berries; 1/2 cup of raw or cooked vegetables.

The late Christie Hennessy, one of Ireland’s great singer-songwriters and much loved performers, was fascinated with Al Jolson and spent much of his boyhood imitating the great Broadway troubadour. John McDwyer’s new play “United” charts the lives of a rural Irish family over fifty years, from the Munich air disaster in 1958.When the matriarch passes away, her remaining children congregate for her funeral. Over the days of the funeral, dark secrets are revealed which lead to conflict and eventual reconciliation. Based on his well-received RTÉ radio play, John McDwyer’s “United” is a moving and heartfelt play from the author of “Lovely Leitrim”, “Callaghan’s Place” and “Unforgiven” and given the usual Beezneez production values, a richly rewarding evening of theatre is guaranteed. Cracking your knuckles does not actually hurt your bones or cause arthritis. The sound you hear is just gas bubbles bursting. Cracking your knuckles (or any of your joints) can have therapeutic benefits. When you crack one of your joints you are pulling the bones that are connected at the joint apart from each other. This process stimulates your tendons, relaxes your muscles, and loosens your joints. Chiropractors do this for spinal joints when your back is sore and stiff, but you can do this on your own for your knuckles, toes, knees, neck, etc.

Serbs are urged to reject Austro Hungarian rule FEB 24. The age-old national rivalries of the Balkans are threatening to plunge this blood-soaked area into war yet again. The Serbs, who lost control of neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina 600 years ago, are now demanding them back from the Austro-Hungarian empire which annexed them fully only last year. The European powers, alarmed at the prospect of another Balkan war which could spread with unforeseeable consequences, are trying to prevent hostilities by suggesting that Serbia renounce its territorial claims in return for an economic treaty with Austria. The Serbs, imbued with Prime Minister Stojan Novakovic's ideal of a Pan-Slavic nation, refuse to listen and are demanding the independence of all ten million Slays under Austro-Hungarian rule. The Austrians are countering by making military preparations and talking of a "war of extermination". The Serbs are also arming and declare they would rather fight and die than yield. But they will look to their fellow slays in Russia for help, if the shooting starts.
France and Spain back new Sultan
SEPT 17. France and Spain yesterday delivered notes to Britain and other European powers seeking support for their decision to recognise Moulay Hafid as Sultan of Morocco after his overthrow of Abd al-Aziz last June. The French and Spanish say they have demanded undertakings from Hafid that he will observe all international treaties and financial obligations, disavow the jihad, or holy war, called by tribes, and impose strict security around ports and along main roads. Abd alAziz's position had been weakened by repeated tribal uprisings against foreign influence.

Report slams workhouse laws
FEB 17. No more children would stay in workhouses, if proposals suggested by a Royal Commission on Britain's poor laws are accepted. Help would also be given for the "unemployed of good character". And, in a lengthy and radical report published today, the commission calls for the boards of guardians to be scrapped and powers to pass to counties and county boroughs. Although the commission was united in its condemnation of the present system, its 18 members disagreed over the remedies. Four members, including Mrs Beatrice Webb from the Fabian Society and George Lansbury, produced a minority report which outlines a detailed programme including the creation of a Ministry of Labour to help people find work. The minority report also calls for public money to be spent on work such as coastline protection. The majority report does not go this far, but wants more help for the sick and elderly. Controls on boys working below the age of 15 should also be tightened, it says.
First man dies in US plane crash
“Model T ready to roll AUG 12. Ford's first new Model T was produced in Detroit today. It replaces the existing Model A, made for the past five years, and fulfils Henry Ford's promise last year to produce "a motor car for the great multitude". His aim has been to produce a car cheap enough for anyone on a good salary to buy, but made from the best materials and on "the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise" and employing the latest manufacturing methods. "Mass production" techniques, based on an "assembly line", will eventually produce over 18,000 cars a year to sell at a retail price of around $900. The new model, which will be produced in only one body colour - black - has already been nicknamed the "Tin Lizzy".
Sept 17. A United States army officer died today in an aircraft piloted by Orville Wright. Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge, 26, of the US Army Signal Corps is the first person to have died in a crash involving an aircraft since the two Wright brothers proved such flight was possible in 1903, Orville Wright was seriously injured in the crash but is expected to recover. The tragedy occurred as the lieutenant and Mr Wright were flying one of the brothers' biplanes
on army trials at Fort Myer, Virginia. The pair climbed onto the aircraft before a crowd of around 2,000 spectators and took off from the centre of the army base at 5.14 pm. At first all seemed fine as the twin engined aircraft slowly climbed after take off. Then as it turned suddenly a blade on the left propeller broke. This unbalanced the opposite good blade which tore loose the wires holding the rudder outriggers on the wings that controlled the
aircraft. The aircraft fell from a height of 75 feet and the lieutenant suffered a fractured skull and never regained consciousness before he died. Wright had been conducting a series of flight trials in front of senior army officers to demonstrate that the aircraft meets all the requirements set by the War Department. The US Secretary of War, Luke Wright, says the accident will not stop the army's trials.
Top Tips to Combat
Nail Biting
NAIL BITING is a bad habit that is not easy to quit, just like smoking. We usually bite our nails when we are nervous or during stressful situations, generally whenever confronted with a stressful event or moment – not to mention when bored! If you are fed up of your nails being bitten down to the stubs and even bleeding sometimes, try these simple remedies to promote normal, beautiful nail growth. • Make a conscious decision to start to care for your nails and hands. • Invest in some really nice hand wash and hand cream sets, and place them at every sink in your house. • Give yourself a mini manicure once a week. Soak your cuticles in warm soapy water, and then push your cuticles back. Nail biters often nibble on the cuticles as well, so if you push your cuticles back, they will seem less obvious and it will prevent you getting them hangnails that you just love to chew on. This will also give the illusion of longer nails. Then apply a nourishing oil such as almond oil to the cuticles and nails, and massage well for a few minutes. Any stimulation around that area encourages quicker growth – get rubbing! • Treat yourself to a professional manicure at your local salon once a month. This is a very relaxing treatment that will help you on your way to nails you should be proud of. It will also encourage you to leave them alone so you have some success to show your therapist. • Always carry a hand cream in your bag for when you wash your hands and there is none available. Again, rub into the cuticle area.
• Always carry a nail file with you at all times. This way, if you chip or crack a nail, you can fix it on the spot with the file, and not with your teeth! • Try wearing a nail varnish every day, even if it just a clear polish. This will deter you from biting and getting a mouth full of polish. But, don’t forget your base coat to prevent the polish from staining the nail plate. You can also get clear nail polish that tastes absolutely Yuk. If this doesn’t stop you, I don’t know what will. They contain ingredients such as cactus extract and chilli pepper. I don’t know about you, but I prefer my chillies in my curry, not painted on my nails thank you very much!

Top Tip – Want Pain Free Tweezing? Are you looking for pain free tweezing? Look no more… Here is a great top tip to try for all you ladies (or indeed gents), with extremely low pain thresholds. Before you go to the salon for your biweekly brow tidy, try applying some bonjela to the area that is about to be treated.YES, BONJELA! The active ingredients will numb the skin, making this torturous event much much easier to bare. This fab tip is only suitable if you are getting your brows tweezed or threaded, as it is not advisable to put any active ingredients on the skin before waxing, just incase it reacts with some of the ingredients in the wax. I would also recommend that you visit your salon once every two weeks for a brow tidy, this way it won’t seem as horendously painful as there won’t be too much hair growth to remove. So happy tweezing ladies and let there be no more plucking fears… sorry, tears!
