The company says it could open up to 50 stores here in the coming years. The Irish stores will be called Dealz, as its fixed-price format will be 'adapted' for its European outlets, giving the retailer flexibility to vary its prices. Poundland sells both well-known brands and own label products at low prices. The company says it will stock Irish, locally sourced milk, eggs and crisps in its new Irish stores. It has 347 stores in the UK where it also sells products ranging from food and drink, to health and beauty, baby and gardening products. The first four Irish stores will open by early October, with two more to follow by next March. It is a welcomed boost for jobs in the Northwest. Poundland's expansion has been supported by private equity firm Warburg Pincus, which took a 75% stake in the company in a £200m deal last year.

The first annual Aughris Inter-Pub Deep-Sea Angling Competition and Family Day took place last Sunday with the main attraction being the donkey derby along the strand. Anglers were competing for the Sean Foy Memorial Cup which originated in West Sligo in the 1980‘s but most recently was held in Mullaghmore. This year’s competition was held to raise funds for the Adam Kennedy Trust. Adam is a local boy from Skreen who suffers from dwarfism and a learning delay and the trust was set up last year to raise funds for his ongoing medical and educational needs. Photo: Jimmy Kilgallen.

Irish Church 'shaken by wrongdoing'
THE Archbishop of Tuam has said many people are angered and appalled by the revelations of the 'mishandling of abuse cases' and said these feelings were shared by priests, religious and bishops. The Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, has said many people are angered and appalled by the revelations of what he said was the 'mishandling of abuse cases' and said these feelings were shared by priests, religious and bishops. The remarks were made in his homily on the summit of Croagh Patrick at the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage. Addressing pilgrims, Dr Neary said the Church in Ireland was 'shaken by wrongdoing'. He said a woman asked him last week when it would all end. The honest answer, he said, is that it will
not end until every survivor has told their story and until every victim is facilitated in embarking on their journey to real healing, where true dignity is accorded. As the annual pilgrimage continues, visibility on the upper slopes of the Co Mayo mountain is poor with cloud surrounding the 760 metre peak. Thousands of people have already completed the climb and thousands more are
continuing with the ascent. Mountain rescue teams from around the country are stationed at various locations along the main climbing route and have escorted a number of people down the mountain. One person with suspected leg injuries was taken to hospital by helicopter. Rescue helicopters have been confined to operations lower down the mountain due to the cloud cover.
One person was airlifted off Croagh Patrick

Sky's the limit as cyclists get ready for big events ON at least two days in different locations this summer, roads will close to all traffic except cyclists. On August 21 in Co Clare almost 130km of road closures will take place for the second annual Sky Ride Etape Hibernia. And Sky Ride Dublin will entail 8km of the capital's streets closing to traffic on September 11. The free event, organised jointly by Sky TV and Dublin City Council, will allow thousands of people to get on their bikes and cycle freely around the city. The route for the event, of which Westlife's Nicky Byrne and style queen Lisa Fitzpatrick are the official ambassadors, will be available shortly on www.goskyride.ie. Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly said both casual cyclists and hardcore racers would enjoy the Etape Hibernia, which is the only non-professional cycling event which sees roads closed across an entire county. Mr Kelly is both an ambassador and a confirmed participant in the event, which is open to all standards of cyclists. More information is available at www.etapehibernia.com.

End of the road for Conrad’s Sligo restaurant
CONRAD Gallagher’s restaurant ambitions in Sligo appear to be at an end following an order by the High Court for the winding up of two companies operating restaurants for the celebrity chef. The Revenue Commissioners petitioned the court to wind up Boutique Restaurants Concepts Ltd and Super Potato Ltd, which operates Conrad’s Kitchen on Sligo’s Rockwood Parade. The other company runs Salon des Saveurs restaurant in Dublin. The two companies are to be wound up after the firms failed to satisfy demands for unpaid taxes of more than 160,000. Ms Justice Mary Laffoy said she was satisfied to make orders winding up both firms as clearly they were insolvent and unable to pay their debts. A spokesman for the chef said the only debts owing on the two closed businesses were for tax and Mr Gallagher had
committed to paying all arrears. However, it is understood that many local suppliers have not been paid and may now be treated as unsecured creditors in the process of winding up the companies. Also, staff of the Rockwood Parade restaurant who are owed wages may have to resort to have outstanding payments
made through a Labour Court Directive. Ian Lawlor, of JPA Brenson Lawlor Ltd, was appointed liquidator to both firms, and have registered addresses at Aungier Street, Dublin. Super Potato Ltd, operators of Conrad’s Kitchen, owed the Revenue Commissioners 50,000 in unpaid VAT, PAYE and PRSI. The business was incorporated in September 2010, and was served with a demand for payment last May. Mr Gallagher, who was just 26-years-of-age when he won a Michelin star, is not listed as a director of either company. His wife Candice and his mother
Evelyn Gallagher are listed as directors of both firms. The Judge refused an application by Barry Mansfield for the companies to further adjourn the petitions seeking to wind up the firms. The adjournment had been sought in order to allow the companies time to see if external funding could be obtained in order to satisfy the debt. Mark O’Mahony, counsel for the revenue, said any application to adjourn proceedings was 'devoid of merit.' No concrete offer had been made to revenue to settle the debt since the demands was made, nor had anything been out on paper to show that the companies would be able to secure external funding. After appointing Mr Lawlor as liquidator the Judge ordered that the directors of the firms, Candice and Evelyn, file statements of affairs and listed the matter before a sitting of the Examiners court later this year.

Restaurants to offer kids more choices CHILDREN eating in restaurants should be offered child size portions of adult meals as an alternative to standard children's menus, according to a new initiative aimed at providing young people with healthier food options. In many eating establishments, child menus tend to veer towards unhealthy options, such as sausages, chicken nuggets and chips. However this latest initiative, which was developed by the Nutrition & Health Foundation (NHF) and the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI), will see participating restaurants carry a new 'Kids Size Me' symbol on their menus. The symbol means child size portions of adults meals are available. According to research commissioned by the NHF, 98% of parents support the provision of child size portions of adult meals. And while many parents have dined in venues offering this option, almost six in 10 of these only became aware of it after requesting it, as it was not openly advertised. Speaking at the launch of the initiative, NHF manager and dietician, Dr Muireann Cullen, emphasised that children 'simply should not be consuming adult portions at meal times'. "Given Ireland has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the world at 10% of children aged five to 12, it is essential to ensure they have access to healthier food options in the appropriate serving size and that this is actively promoted by restaurants. We are delighted to partner with the RAI to devise a set of voluntary guidelines that will be circulated to restaurant chefs and owners nationwide to assist them to deliver good value
and healthier menu options for children,” she said. Meanwhile, the NHF research also showed that despite the economic downturn, 52% of parents take their children out to eat once a month, while 18% eat out every fortnight. The main factors that influence parents' choice of restaurants are 'value for money' (85%), 'taste of food' (85%) and a 'nicely varied children's menu' (72%). When it comes to food choices, almost eight out of 10 children chose what they are going to eat themselves, with just over half choosing from the adult menu. According to parents, three in four children normally finished their meal, and where they did not, a big portion size was most often to blame. Brian Fallon, president of the RAI, said that the new voluntary guidelines on child portions will be issued to its 600 member restaurants throughout Ireland. "Restaurants can get kids really excited about eating healthily and ‘Kids Size Me’ is all about letting children enjoy the fresh and healthy taste of good quality food,” he commented.

LOCALS have been shocked following news of a suspected arson attack on Quinn Tarmac, Derrylin, Co Fermanagh over the last weekend. The incident has been strongly condemned. The PSNI and Gardai have launched a joint investigation into whether this most recent attack on the Quinn Group is connected to a series of vandalism incidents at the group site on the Cavan/Fermanagh border over the past number of months. Four fire fighters responded to a 12.30am
call Sunday morning, July 24 at the Tarmac plant in which two vans, one eight-wheel lorry, a loading shovel vehicle, Tarmac spreader and small roller were set ablaze. Fire services from Ballyconnell, Lisnaskea and Enniskillen responded. The vehicles were parked outside the office buildings and it’s understood the blaze did come near the premises at one stage, but it was brought under control before it could do any damage. The scene was technically examined on

Great Western Greenway officially opened
THE Great Western Greenway was officially opened on Friday last by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister Michael Ring T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Transport,Tourism & Sport. The first phase of the Great Western Greenway, an 18km route off-road cycling and walking route from Newport to Mulranny, was opened in April 2010. Following the huge success of this first phase, the initial 18km route was extended, from Mulranny to Achill and from Newport to Westport, resulting in a 42km route which will loop around scenic Clew Bay, mainly along the line of the old Midland Great Western Railway. The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and Fáilte Ireland co-funded the
project, which has been developed by Mayo County Council. The project is the result of Mayo County Council and local landowners working together to develop the concept of the walking and cycling Greenway, and to ensure its delivery. Speaking at the launch, Minister Ring said: “This route is perfect for sightseeing - offering gentle gradients and some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. The route forms part of the National Cycle Network and it is the longest off road cycling experience in the country. Figures show that nearly 50,000 people used the Greenway between March and June this year – locals, day trippers, Irish and overseas tourists. All shared the experience of our beautiful landscape, on
Knock/Manchester air link retained
NEWS that the direct air link between Ireland West Airport Knock and Manchester would be retained has come as a relief to commuters and the general public. It was feared the route
would be discontinued in October with the departure of BmiBaby. Flybe, one of Europe’s largest and most successful regional airlines, last week announced it is to take over the Knock/Manchester route from BmiBaby from the end of October. The plane involved will be a
foot or on a bike, and the visitors provided an invaluable boost to the local economy here.” Minister Ring continued: “But this route is not just about tourism. It has also facilitated people in the area in making local journeys by foot or by bike and has particularly helped local children achieve their Green Schools Travel ambitions. The route shows everyone that sustainable travel can be enjoyable travel” “I would like to praise all those who have worked hard over the last number of years to bring this project to completion, from the local community, the local authorities, the state agencies and the Departments”, said Minister Ring. The bulk of funding for the first phase was 1.28 million, directly from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, as investment in Sustainable Transport. In recognition of its tourism potential, Fáilte Ireland invested 160,000 in the development of the first phase. Significant funding was also invested by Mayo County Council and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. In 2010 the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and Fáilte Ireland each allocated 1.6m towards the development of the two extensions to Achill Sound and to Westport. The former provided funding as investment in sustainable travel, and the National Cycle Policy, and the latter under the Tourism Capital Investment Programme. These new sections will provide a further significant boost to local tourism, and indeed to sustainable travel and transport in the area.
78-seater - substantially smaller than the 148-seater BmiBaby currently operates between Knock and Manchester. Initially the Flybe service will operate four days per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The company hopes to operate a daily service during the summer months but this has not been finalised. Confirming Flybe’s involvement on the Manchester route,
airport spokesperson Mr. John Healy said the airport was extremely happy the airline was taking over the route. “Perhaps due to the emigrant factor Manchester is one of our most popular and important routes,” Mr. Healy stated. “Large numbers of Manchester United fans also travel back and over from the west of Ireland for matches.” BmiBaby is to continue its Knock/Bermingham service.

New Research Fund launched at IT Sligo
Staff who were successful in achieving funding under the Research Capacity Fund this year, pictured with President of IT Sligo Professor Terri Scott; Registrar, Dr Brendan McCormack; Head of Research, Dr John Bartlett; and Head of School of Science, Dr Jeremy Bird.
SOME 200,000 is being invested in a new fund to support a variety of research projects being undertaken by staff at IT Sligo, underpinning the Institute’s commitment to research. The new Research Capacity Fund will be distributed over a three year period; 80,000 was allocated during the academic year just ended and a further 60,000 will be paid over
each of the next two years. President of IT Sligo, Professor Teri Scott, said that research is the ‘lifeblood’ of any higher level education institution;“This new fund is further sign of our commitment to building research capacity in the Institute and in the region. Our Research & Innovation strategy focuses our efforts on building on expertise
in key areas that will provide dividends for the North West region. The success achieved by our students in the Microsoft Imagine Cup this summer is a sign of what we are doing right in IT Sligo and we are excited about the opportunities presented through this very significant achievement.” Dr John Bartlett, Head of Re-

search at the Institute, said that such a significant allocation, underlines the importance the institute places on its research endeavours. He added that he was confident that as a direct result of these grants, multiples of the allocation would return to the IT from other funding sources, both national and international. Lecturer Paul Powell who is involved in two of the research projects to benefit from the fund this year, said it will help finance equipment and travel. He is supervisor on a ground breaking biodiversity project which will involve the use of mobile phones to identify and track species of butterfly. Mr Powell, a Lecturer in Computing in the Department of Information Systems in the School of Business and Humanities, explained that postgraduate research student James McNamara will use a smart phone while literally out in the field, to locate and identify species using information downloaded from a cloud computing platform to assist in identifying the species. James McNamara is one of the students who were successful in the Microsoft Imagine Cup Competition. Information gathered about the species will also be transferred from the smart phone to a cloud computing platform or giant processing and storage facility. Microsoft's Azure platform is used in
the process. The system will then allow web based access to information about the species such as location and distribution. “This project has important implications for biodiversity tourism which is going to be very important in Ireland,” explained Mr Powell. Both Mr Paul Powell and Dr Tony McCabe from the School of Science are also involved in another successful project which involves the creation of a virtual science laboratory and will see students using computer games to familiarize themselves with science lab environments while carry out virtual experiments as part of a computer game, before entering the real thing. This project has implications for online learning, a key part of IT Sligo’s Learning and Teaching strategy. The research will incorporate a Microsoft Kinect device together with heads up display glasses to give a more immersed game playing and learning experience. The researcher on this project is postgraduate student Neil Gannon. The Research Capacity Fund is designed to facilitate staff in their research activities and to focus capital and human resources on key areas of research, including those allied to national priorities. Grants can be used to fund equipment, employ research assistants or permit researchers to attend national conferences to present their work.

Magical Moments on Benbulben… The photo above (courtesy of Ciaran Davis ) shows the descent. The walk raised over 2,505 for the Rescue Team, and we hope to make it and annual event. There were no accidents , a few wet feet and muddy backsides as the grass was slippery in places – but nothing to worry about and a lot of very smiley faces as we had hot tea and biscuits back down at Lukes Bridge at around 1.30 am. The Team’s funding has taken yet another blow as our annual grant was slashed again this year , making a 40% cut over two years
and leaving us with only around 7k as a yearly operational income. From this the Team pays insurance, has to buy kit and medical supplies, maintain two vehicles and other expenses. It is a completely voluntary organisation , and members clock up hundreds of hours of service each year in aiding others on Ireland’s uplands. A huge thank you to all those who took part in this truly historic walk – a real ” I was there” moment – and many thanks to all the Sligo/Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team on the mountain.
A group of 100+ make the decent of Ben Bulben after an night walk
SATURDAY 23rd July was a night to remember for 210 intrepid walkers who took up the challenge to raise funds for the Sligo/Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team.“Summer Night Walk” proved to be an even bigger success than we had hoped” reported Heidi Wickham , Rescue Team Member and walk co-ordinator. The Rescue Team needs funds, and are often asked about safe routes up the mountain , so it was decided to instigate a guided walk to the trig point and the very top of Benbulben at 526m to give people the opportunity to experience climbing one of the country’s most iconic land marks at night and
helping their local Rescue Team too. A three and a half hour route was planned and the 210 walkers were split into three groups each guided by experienced Rescue members. After a fairly tough ascent , the first 100 or so made it to the trig point, with the two other groups following on at half hour intervals. We all met at the summit in a blaze of torch lights , and sat in awe and wonder at the spectacular view , chatting and munching sandwiches , this was at about 11.30 pm in dark, dry and calm conditions with a blood red quarter moon peeping out from the clouds.

SF mayor sorry for 'strong language' used on Facebook over A&E protest A MAYOR who was branded "a disgrace" over her use of strong language on a social networking site has apologised, accepting it was not appropriate to her office. Sinn Fein councillor Jane Suffin said she had used strong language on her Facebook page "in the heat of the moment". She used a string of four-letter words in her posts in reference to a protest on the closure of Roscommon Hospital's A&E, and about local TD Frank Feighan who voted with the Government on closing the service. The newly elected mayor of Boyle in Co Roscommon said that while she now accepted the choice of language was not appropriate, she still stood over the sentiments expressed on her Facebook page. Ms Suffin lashed out at her town council colleagues and local people over their lack of support for a protest she had organised on the opening night of the Boyle Arts Festival last week. In a message posted on her Facebook page following the protest, Ms Suffin said: "People power my arse, power to the people my arse . . . where was Frank Feighan TD, in King House having his arse licked." In a postscript she offered: "We can even supply wipes for when your (sic) finished kissing Frankie's TD ass. Better get a big supply of them in as there'll be thousands looking for them." Of local people, she wrote: "Have you ever known Boyle any different, giving out like f**k while drinking tea in there kitchen's (sic) and full to the gills on a high stool. "But when it comes to making a stand they have as much backbone as there (sic) local TD and deserve whatever kick in the arse they get . . . a few words spring to mind, spineless, two-
faced, narrow-minded, selfish." In an earlier posting on July 10 she wrote: "The day's off (sic) the money talks and s**t walks attitude is well and truly over for the people of Roscommon and we are to take this chance to push this down the neck of our so called TDs. F**k u Jack I'm alright -- well let me tell ya f**k you Frank u ain't." The first citizen of the town said her use of strong language was "down to pure frustration and anger". "I do accept the language is not fitting for a town mayor but at the time it was the heat of the moment and these things happen and you lose your temper and see red," she said. "If the language did offend anyone, I'm totally sorry. Normally I would not use language like that but it galled me so much." Ms Suffin was also criticised for wearing her chain of office at the protest. "I felt it only fitting and right that the mayor of Boyle would be seen to be supporting the people," Ms Suffin told the Irish Independent. "I was not going to compromise what I believe in because I had the chain of office. I was invited to the opening of the arts festival and the only people who took issue with it were the Fine Gael members of the council. "They should have better things to be concentrating on than me wearing a chain of office at a protest." One member of the town council, who did not wished to be named, said a Fine Gael voting pact had put Ms Suffin in the position of mayor and it was now up to them to deal with it. It is understood the FG members of the town council will meet this week to discuss the issue

Telephone: 09842758 Mobile: 0876472461 McGuinness reflects on Donegal GAA victory DONEGAL GAA manager always had faith in his side, up to the final whistle in last evening’s classic All Ireland quarter final against Kildare and he said that he never thought that they were beaten, a feeling he has had since the beginning of the year. “Since the first game when we were eight points down when there was 20 minutes to go in the first League game against Sligo, I thought ‘this is what it is like to get beaten as an inter-county manager’. “But they found something in that game and they dug very, very deep and they got over the line and they got the draw out of the game. “The following week we went to Omagh and we beat Tyrone. Every single game since that when they have been in a very difficult situation they haven’t taken the easy option and opted out. “They have always dug their heels
in, they have always worked very, very hard and kept on believing. “Because of all those things when it was in the melting pot and they were three up in the second period of extra-time I still didn’t think – I always had that bit of belief that they would try at least to find something. “Whether they would fall short or not I always believed they would keep going until the end.” Donegal now have a month to prepare for their semi-final meeting with the winners of the Tyrone-Dublin quarter-final on August 28thl. “We haven’t been able to reflect on the Ulster final either and the Ulster final was a huge thing for this group of players,” added McGuinness. “Psychologically it was an absolutely huge achievement for them and they will cherish that medal. We haven’t been able to process that because we put it literally to the side
after the Sunday night and we started focusing on this game. “I know a lot of the papers and a of the media spoke about the fact that they thought we were done and dusted with our season because we had won the Ulster Championship and that we weren’t going to move on. “But that that wasn’t the way it transpired and that came from the group of players. Obviously we want them to stay focused and do something in the All-Ireland series but the players re-focused themselves very quickly as well so it is nice now to have a month and to process that tonight as well as today’s game. “And then obviously Monday and the next four weeks gives us a really good opportunity to work and prepare and get the players that are on the periphery up to another level and build from there.”

Scholarships for sporting stars at IT Sligo

pplications are now open for sports scholarships at IT Sligo. More than 50,000 will be allocated by the Institute this year to support students who work to excel in their chosen area of sport. Every year the Institute awards scholarships to over 20 students, supporting sports men and women who reach for the stars both on and off the pitch. Next year’s beneficiaries, who must apply before the end of September, will be following in the footsteps of players who have excelled across a range of sports. Not surprisingly given Sligo’s growing reputation as a haven for surfing, IT Sligo has been blazing a trail on the tides and among this year’s scholarship recipients was Ronan Oertzen from Belfast who recently took gold at the 2011 the Irish Student National Surf Championships. Sligo GAA was well represented among this

year’s roll call also with senior players Keelan Cawley and Jonathan Kelly from Ballintrillick, while All-Ireland Dublin champion Kim Flood and Leitrim county player Dermott Reynolds were also among the beneficiaries. While the college has a proud record of three Sigerson Cup wins over a decade and a plethora of GAA and soccer trophies, President of IT Sligo, Professor Terri Scott says the scholarship scheme is designed to attract skilled performers from many areas of sport. “IT Sligo has a very proud tradition and achievement in sport and we encourage and support our students to participate in, and to excel at, their chosen sport in every way we can. To that end, we have invested over 2 million in our sports facilities in the last two years and students now have the benefit of flood lit playing pitches, an astro turf facility, an international

standard running track and the fully equipped Knocknarea Arena.Whether it’s taking part for recreational or competitive purposes, we encourage our students to get active and to get involved.” Joe Cox, chairman of the Sports Scholarship Committee said the scheme was set up to foster excellence on the sports field and to illustrate that the college was about more than academic success. Successful students enjoy top class facilities and coaching while they in turn represent the IT on and off the field. “The bench mark is quite high,” explained Mr Cox.“In fact it is a self fulfilling prophesy because when talented young people see our students performing at national and county level , they are attracted to the college”. Beneficiaries of the scheme are expected to be ambassadors for the college, not least by representing IT Sligo in their sport. The scholarships
will be worth a total of 50,000 in the coming year with individual students getting payments of up to 1,750. Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis but they can be repeated. Scholarship winners from the class of 2010-2011 include three from Co Sligo who have excelled in the boxing ring – Maria Faney from Ballinacarrow and brothers John and Conor Tighe from Ballymote . Soccer fans were well represented this year with scholarship going to Danny Keohane from Ballyshannon, Darragh Healy Ballisodare and Keith Nibbs from Sligo . THIS years Ballina Salmon Festival was treated to a touch of Broadway, when an American Song and Dance troupe flew over from Washington DC to perform at the internationally famous festival in Ballina, Co Mayo. Singular Sensations are an award winning thirty strong Song and Dance troupe who
perform hits from all of the major Broadway shows. Tony Hennigan the PRO for the festival said “Their first performance at the festival was on the banks of the River Moy at the Kennedy-Glassgow centre. The centre was set up to mark the place where emigrants set sail for America and England. It seemed to be an ideal setting for the troupe, to start
their tour in their very same place that their forefathers had left the shores of the Emerald Isle.” The troupe entertained the Moy Valley over 50’s club during the group’s Afternoon Tea Dance and received a rapturous reception. They then posed with them for some pictures on the River Moy.
Ballina Salmon Festival is one of Ireland’s Premier community festivals and takes place in and around the banks of the River Moy, which is internationally famous for its Salmon fishing and is known as Ireland’s Salmon capital. Facebook stalker 'like peeping Tom' A man who trawled women's Facebook pages searching for clues that allowed him to take over their email accounts was jailed more than four years in California after a judge likened him to a peeping Tom. Once he took over the email accounts, George Bronk searched their folders for nude or semi-nude photographs or videos sent to their husbands or boyfriends and distributed the images to their contact list, said prosecutors in Sacramento. The emails went to families, friends and coworkers. Women in 17 states, the District of Columbia and in England were targeted. "This case serves as a stark example of what occurs in so-called cyberspace. It has very real consequences," said Judge Lawrence Brown. "The intrusion of one's profile is no different than intruding one's home." Bronk, 24, pleaded guilty in January to charges that included computer intrusion, false impersonation and possession of child pornography. Judge Brown sentenced him to four years in state prison for the charges related to the Facebook and email offences, and added eight more months for charges related to child pornography. Bronk's lawyer, Monica Lynch, said her client took responsibility for his actions and showed remorse. After he changed passwords and took over accounts, Bronk would search folders for compromising photos and distribute them publicly, said prosecutors. He even taunted some of the women in online exchanges and coerced at least one into sending him more explicit photographs by threatening to distribute the pictures he already had. Witness Danielle Piscak, 22, said earlier this year that she was able to contact the person who had hacked into her email account and ask why he was doing it. She said Bronk's reply was: "Because it's funny."
How to get men to do more DIY
A new website aims to encourage men to do household chores - by offering instruction videos featuring scantily clad models Boring tasks such as unshrinking clothes and changing a car tyre are demonstrated by lingerie-clad girls, reports The Sun. Other jobs tackled in the videos include waxing a surf board, removing gaffer tape, preventing bathroom mirrors steaming up during a shower and changing guitar strings. As well as getting the girls to demonstrate the techniques, EyeHandy.com also provides a list of tools needed to complete the tasks. The site is the brainchild of US video producer Alex Merriman, 26, who says he wanted to provide a fun and informative experience for viewers. The site currently has 15 how-to videos and plans to add a new one each week.

Children send illicit text messages
CHILDREN as young as six months are playing with gadgets and youngsters are using their parents' mobile phones without their knowledge, research has suggested. It showed that nearly a fifth of parents (19%) said their children had sent a text message or made calls from their mobile phone without them knowing at the time. The survey, carried out by Legal and General, also found that one in ten children had downloaded apps onto a parent's smartphone without their knowledge. Nearly two-thirds (60%) of youngsters between six months and two years play with gadgets such as tablet computers and laptops, and one in ten children aged six months do so too. The research found that 36% of fathers were comfortable with letting children under four play with gadgets, but only 23% of mothers felt that way. Mike Lawler, from Legal and General, said: "I find it amazing how quickly children know how to use technology gadgets. But inquisitive fingers can soon become expensive fingers if the gadget they play with should break. "We are increasingly bringing new and often expensive pieces of technology into our homes, which if left within reach, can be very tempting for a child to then play with. While smartphones and HD TVs can help to keep children entertained, we need to be watchful to protect these expensive items and also those little fingers." The survey of 2,000 people was carried out by OnePoll between April 13 and 15 this year.
Man turns plane into caravan
A retired craft teacher has built himself the ultimate touring combination - a six-wheeled car and a caravan converted from an aeroplane. Phil Collins heard that six-
wheeled Citroens were once sold on the continent but couldn't get hold of one so bought an old 1989 Citroen estate and had it converted.
Then he came across a 1964 Piper Commanche plane and decided to turn it into a one-man caravan. "It all came out of a desire to do
something with old aeroplanes at the end of their life," he explained. The Piper came up on eBay, and had already been stripped of much of its parts and interior, so Mr Collins snapped it up. He built a new chassis for it and finished the conversion with a mixture of caravan and aeroplane parts. The instrument panel opens up to reveal a stowage cupboard and the redesigned interior now houses a large single bed which tapers from one end to the other, a table and two chairs. When it comes to cooking, the nose section opens up to reveal a retractable aluminium sink and gas stove. The water tank, battery, gas bottles, spare wheel and jack are also in the nose, while pots and pans are in another cupboard. Mr Collins added: "I like the philosophy of adaptive re-use; it is a kind of recycling without the need to break-up the item and melt things down."

Good hearty diet
It's silly season for grocers after two rival market traders both claimed to have discovered perfect heart-shaped spuds on the same day. Serbian farmer Srdjan Popovic from the southern village of Donja Konjusa used his heart shaped potato as a way to attract customers to his fruit and vegetable stall in the nearby town of Kursumlija. He said: "The heart is not on sale, it is just a good PR to show the customers how much love I put in growing my vegetables." And in China grocer Lin Qi found his heart shaped spud in a sack of potatoes and has now put it on display at an agriculture exhibition. He said: "I don't want to sell it - I want to share its message of love with as many people as possible."
€95 million profit per day for fuel companies
The AA has slammed the oil industry for 'making a killing' while motorists suffer, as Shell and BP are poised to announce £7.5 billion quarterly profits. The oil corporations are about to post profits of £1,000 per second between April and June, yet many drivers are being forced to cut down on journeys because of staggering fuel costs. The current national average price for petrol is 136p per litre, while diesel is 140p. Back in April it seemed that pump prices would reduce dramatically because of a supermarket price war, as Morrisons, Sainsbury's and the Co-op all offered big discounts for shoppers spending in-store. That hasn't had a lasting effect on average prices, although they are varying wildly up and down the country - a situation that experts say is forcing eight independent fuel stations out of business per week. Currently the cheapest fuel can be found at 125.9p per litre at a Tesco forecourt in Bishop Auckland, North East England, while the most expensive is a whopping 149.9p at an Argyll filling station. One forecourt at an Asda in Blyth, Northumberland, was recently bombarded by motorists when a staff mistake meant they could fill up for just 13.7p per litre. Meanwhile, a third oil company, BG Group, will soon announce £1.22 billion profit for the period from April to June. Luke Bosdet of the AA said: "Drivers will find it hard to comprehend how they can find the cost of motoring increasingly unaffordable while those involved in the oil industry are making a killing."
The wheels on the bus...
TERRIFIED passengers had a right bus strop when their oblivious driver motored on - after the wheels had fallen off his coach. Driver Shi Shao, 48, told police in Shaoyang, Hunan province, southern China, that he thought he'd hit a pothole and was returning to his depot to have the suspension checked. But his horrified passengers begged him to stop when they saw the bus's rear axle behind them in the road and could feel the floor of the vehicle turning red hot as it scraped along the road. "The potholes around here are bad but nothing could be that bad," said one passenger. Police - who say the stranded bus caused a three-hour tailback in rush hour traffic - explained: "The driver may now face charges of endangering public safety."
Ice ball confusion in Czech Republic IT could be in the running to be the world's largest hailstone, but meteorologists don't believe it's real. The massive ice ball was bizarrely found in the middle of a forest by a couple out picking mushrooms in Milovice in the Czech Republic. It was surrounded by mud from the melting ice ball - but there were no tracks footprints or any other indication of how it had been put there. Meteorologists rejected suggestions that the huge ball of ice could have fallen from the sky and not broken up - leaving everyone puzzled as to how it got there.

The average driver speeds 18,000 times IT takes a maximum of four speeding offences to get an automatic driving ban, yet the average driver speeds an incredible 18,000 times in their lifetime. New research has revealed some
remarkable statistics about the lifetime behind the wheel for the average driver. With motorists often feeling victimised by speed cameratoting police, the stats show that maybe we all need to slow down a
Our motoring lifetime: Cars owned: 26 Miles driven: 292,986 miles Broken the speed limit: 18,165 times Visits to fuel stations: 2,645 times Stuck in traffic: 100 days 21 hrs and 7 mins Took / made a phone call: 2,337 times Check phone for texts: 1,292 times Listens to the radio: 376 days 11 hrs 2 mins Near misses: 81 times Minor accidents: 35 times Broken down: 13 times Flat tyre: 15 times Visited garage for repairs: 31 times Eaten in the car: 1,093 times Driven on the motorway: 7,705 times Applied make up / brushed hair: 363 times Got lost: 336 times
little. Among the other shocking statistics is the number of near misses we'll all have: 81. And we'll each be involved in up to 35 minor accidents, including scraping bumpers
and parking dings. Given that we'll own 26 cars in our lifetime, that means we're at risk of clouting every one of them and half of them will break down, because we all suffer 13 car breakdowns on average, too. Shockingly, we'll be stuck in traffic for a total of 22 days, and listen to more then a year's worth of radio - 376 days. The research, carried out by Gocompare.com, looked at 2,000 drivers and averaged out their activity over a driving lifetime of 61.5 years. It comes as traffic congestion is set to soar because of the school summer break. And with a greater number of children out playing in the streets during the daytime, road safety charity Brake is urging drivers to respect urban 20mph zones. Worryingly, it seems the average driver is still willing to make phone calls and check texts on the move highly distracting and illegal. According to the research, a driver will check their phone for texts 1,292 times, and make 2,337 phone calls in a lifetime behind the wheel.

7 Ways You're Aging Your Skin
DO you hop into bed still wearing your mascara? Try out every new skin product to hit the shelves? These common mistakes may not seem like a big deal, but over time they can take a toll on your skin and leave you looking prematurely aged. Don’t worry: It’s not too late. Here, we break down your bad skin habits and show you how to avoid them—and look 10 years younger. Skipping sunscreen The No. 1 way you’re aging your skin? Not wearing sunscreen daily. “The sun is the primary cause of skin
aging,” says Neil Sadick, MD, a New York City– based dermatologist. The sun can reach you on cloudy, rainy, or snowy days as well. Plus, Dr. Sadick adds, “skin-damaging UV rays can penetrate through glass, so you need to apply sun protection even indoors.” He suggests choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which blocks both types of UV rays, UVA and UVB, with an SPF of at least 30. Antioxidant-fortified formulas containing ingredients such as resveratrol, vitamin C, idebenone, or coffee berry can offer additional protection.

Neglecting your hands and neck Your face isn’t the only area that needs a little TLC. Overexposure to sun affects your hands and neck just as much as your complexion. These areas show signs of aging, like dark spots, dryness, and loss of firmness, notes Dr. Sadick. Treat your neck and the backs of your hands as you would your face by generously applying moisturizer and sunscreen. While you can buy bodyspecific products, they aren’t necessary. Those formulated for your face will work just fine, Dr. Sadick says. Spot treating pimples Thanks to fluctuating hormones, women over 40 routinely experience acne problems. But using a spot treatment to relieve red spots will only dry out the skin, leaving a raw and irritated area—and it won’t help heal the pimple either. Instead, says Carolyn Jacob, MD, director of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology, treat your entire face with an acne-fighting cleanser or moisturizer once a day. It’s your best bet for preventing future breakouts. Going to bed without removing your makeup You may find it tempting to fall into
bed after a busy day— or a late night on the town—without cleaning your face. But skipping a cleanser at night can lead to breakouts later. During the day, environmental toxins (like dirt and pollution) build up on skin and invade pores, which can cause complexion problems, says Dr. Sadick. So don’t hit the sack before you wash. Use a good cleanser and save your skin. Keep a box of cleansing towelettes bedside for added convenience—simply swipe and sleep. Ditching products too quickly If you’re frustrated that your new anti-aging moisturizer isn’t doing its job, stick it out longer before switching. Bouncing from product to product may leave you with the impression that nothing works for your skin. Dr. Jacob recommends that you give a new product at least six weeks to produce a change in your complexion. “One skin cycle takes 30 days [for new cells to reach the top layer of skin], so in order to see a real difference in texture, tone, and clarity, you need to use it for more than a month,” she says. If the product contains anti-aging ingredients, wait even longer. Your skin takes about four months to regenerate collagen and elastin, she says. Using too many products at once If a new moisturizer is good, then the combination of a new serum, toner, and night cream must be better, right? Not so fast. If your skin gets irritated after you use a handful of new prod-

ucts, you won’t know what’s causing the problem and assume they’re all irritating. Instead, “start with one at a time, and integrate a new product every two weeks,” says Dr. Jacob. That way, you’ll be better able to identify what’s aggravating you, or know what combination of them makes your skin go haywire. Plus, you’ll also save some cash by buying only what you need. Skimping on sleep Getting insufficient shut-eye can age skin prematurely—and, in the short run, result in dark circles and a lackluster complexion. During the day, our skin cells are battling against an onslaught of stressors, like UV rays and pollution. Sleep is vital because stress hormones drop to normal levels at night, giving cells time to repair and rejuvenate, says Dr. Jacob. Plus, stress raises the levels of the hormone cortisol, which increases oil production and can lead to bouts of acne, according to Dr. Jacob. So make sure you’re not depriving yourself of the sleep you need.

WHAT IS Neuroenergetic Kinesiology by Annette Reilly Principal (Irish College of Neuroenergetic Kinesiology)
K
inesiology is the SCIENCE of movement. Kinesiology has its roots in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and chiropractic methods. It incorporates techniques such as acupressure and meridian balancing, gentle structural manipulation, massage and nutrition. Kinesiology works to balance all systems of the body and can help with any health issue whether it's physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Kinesiology assesses the patient via a muscle response test. This is a gentle test which
detects stresses and imbalances in the four areas of the body's systems: • CHEMICAL: (e.g. nutrition, hormones, pH balance, metabolism, immune response) • STRUCTURAL: (e.g. bones, muscles, tissues) • EMOTIONAL: (e.g. stress, anxiety, fears, phobias, trauma) • ELECTROMAGNETIC: (e.g. hydration, energy levels, energy fields) In Neuroenergetic Kinesiology we use
what are called "finger modes". One mode we use is called "priority mode" by using this mode at the beginning of a session it allows only that which is priority to work on with each client to come to the surface during a session. In short, Kinesiology works where the body needs it most, in a way that is most effective for each client. I'm having fantastic results with Anxiety, Allergies, Asthma, Arthritis and other Aches & Pains, Colic, Dyslexia and other Learning difficulties, Digestive Disorders, Depression, Fears/Phobias/Panic Attacks to name but a few. Cows have no upper front teeth Although a cow has no upper front teeth, it grazes up to 8 hours a day, taking in about 45 kg (100 lb) of feed and the equivalent of a bath tub full of water. A healthy cow gives about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. Invention of the submarine in 1578 Leonardo da Vinci (14521519) made sketches of a submarine and William Bourne, a British mathematician, drew plans for a submarine in 1578. But it was only in 1620 that Cornelius van Drebbel, a Dutch inventor, managed to build a submarine. He wrapped a wooden rowboat tightly in waterproofed leather and had air tubes with floats to the surface to provide oxygen. Of course, there were no engines yet, so the oars went through the hull at leather gaskets. He took the first trip with 12 oarsmen in the Thames River – staying submerged for 3 hours.

Nostradamus predictions NOSTRADAMUS, the French Christian Jew who lived in France in the 16th century, made many accurate forecasts, including the two World Wars. 18 of his 950 quatrains refer to a third world war. Some Nostradamus experts had given the date for the start of such a war as mid-1999, referring to the Balkan conflict surrounding Kosovo. They obviously misinterpreted the quatrains. Their attention then turned to the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York.

advent of the motorcar. In 1868, British railroad signal engineer J P Knight invented the first traffic light, a lantern with red and green signals. It was installed at the intersection of George and Bridge Streets in front of the the British House of Commons to control the flow of horse buggies and pedestrians.
Over 20,000 beer brands Worldwide, 20,000 brands of beer are brewed in 180 styles, from ales, lagers, pilsner and stouts to bitters, cream ales and iced beers. King opens courts on old prison site FEB 27. The King and Queen drove down a flower-lined route, loyally cheered by large crowds, to open the new Criminal Courts of Justice at Old Bailey today. It was a magnificent spectacle as the King, in uniform, and the Queen, in a costume of black velvet, greeted Judges, Bishops and City dignitaries all in full robes. Work began on the new court built on the site of Newgate Prison in 1902. Designed by Mr E.W. Mountford, it is both dignified and beautiful; the cost was met by the City of London. In his speech the King said that the noblest purpose of justice was that the criminal should be reformed.
blast past from the
Women and Police in Commons clash FEB 14. A record number of suffragettes - 57 - plus two men appeared in court today following bitter clashes with the police last night. The struggles between the women and the officers, many on horseback, lasted for more than five hours and marked the most ferocious battle yet in women's war for the vote. The trouble happened after a decision by what the movement calls "its parliament", which has been set up in Caxton Hall, to present a resolution to its male counterpart in Westminster. As the women marched through the streets at dusk, mounted police rode into the procession to break it up. The women were scattered. Some had their clothes torn and their bodies bruised but still they fought to get to the House. Fifteen of them reached the Strangers' Lobby where they tried to hold a meeting before being arrested. In court the first defendent, Christabel Pankhurst, said they had wanted a peaceful march. She claimed that the disturbance was the fault of the authorities who had instructed the police to use strong measures. Miss Pankhurst added: "The women who asked for votes were in danger of their lives. We do not come here in any way to excuse our conduct. We feel yesterday was a great day for our movement". She then vowed: "There can be no going back for us and more will happen if we do not get justice." The court room itself was packed to overflowing for the hearing and crowds who could not get in lined the street outside. When the prisoners were driven off to Holloway, the crowd broke into loud cheers and waved their handkerchiefs wildly at the woman they see as modern martyrs.
Transatlantic Liners in price-cutting war Jan 12. The price of travel across the Atlantic is falling sharply as the two main shipping lines, White Star and Cunard, battle it out to attract more passengers. Both lines have recently cut their fares twice so that second class tickets have fallen by as much as 45 shillings and third class by 30 shillings. The prize in the battle is the third class passenger market now dominated by Cunard who carried 86,000 such passengers across the Atlantic last year.
Giant liners for speed record Today's success comes in only the second West-bound voyage of the new liner but her master, Captain J.B. Watt, believes she can do better still using the full strength of her 70,000 horse power steam turbines.
England’s Test win a close thing JAN 7. Amid rising tension in the closest Test Match yet played overseas, England's final pair of Arthur Fielder and Sydney Barnes put on the 39 runs needed to beat Australia by one wicket in Melbourne. An accurate throw from cover at the very last minute as the pair scampered home for the winning run would have given Test cricket its first-ever tie.
Suffrage demo hits ministers’ houses JAN 30. Nine suffragettes were arrested today following incidents at the homes of six cabinet ministers. The raids, carried out simultaneously, were part of a new strategy to harass prominent politicians who oppose their cause. Other examples of the policy include attempting to hand a petition to the King and chaining themselves to railings in Downing Street.
t a k c a b g n i k o o L the year 1901
Oct 11. Cannons boomed, sirens shrieked and thousands waved flags today as the new Queen of the Seas, the Lusitania, broke all records for crossing the Atlantic and regained for England the supremacy of this key passenger route. She took just 4 days 19 hours 52 minutes to beat the HamburgAmerican line's Deutschland, the previous holder of the Blue Riband, by 11 hours 46 minutes - an average speed of just over 24 knots. Even more amazing is that the monthold liner was not even out for the record.
Her captain had been instructed not even to bother to try for it in the face of high seas and head winds. The giant Cunard ship left Liverpool with 400 first and 473 second class passengers aboard on Saturday night and passed the Daunt's Rock, Queenstown, the point from which Atlantic crossings are officially timed, at 10.25 am on Sunday. Her best day's steaming was between noon on Tuesday and noon on Wednesday when she covered 617 miles, 16 more in a day than the Deutschland has ever managed.
The Lusitania was described on her maiden voyage last month as "positively the most brilliant thing in ships the world has ever seen". Capt. Watt praised her too. "She's a daisy," he said.

Regardless of whether the athlete has suffered from depression or lost a limb they have shown the courage to persist and have become the world’s best in their chosen sport and category. “If you can imagine it, you can create it. If you dream it, you can become it” Ireland’s medal winners and indeed equally those who participated without glory are role models for the famous words of William Arthur Ward. When a child is born blind or an adult injured in an accident their loved ones pray that they may have the best life possible, few even think to dream of the day when their loved one will step onto the Olympic podium representing Ireland. Down Syndrome is one of the more widely recognised disabilities. The typical slower than average development, unique facial features and breathing difficulties that are so often symbolic of this condition are overshadowed by the loving, easy-going and positive nature of the individuals who have that little extra genetic chromosome. I feel so lucky that I have a good friend who also happens to have Down Syndrome and despite been only seven years old never ceases to put a smile on my face and brighten up my day! People with disabilities comprise almost 20% of our Irish society and contribute invaluably to our culture. While they may differ in appearance, shy away from certain social settings or struggle to cope with independence with the other 80% of our population these are individuals that are just as equal, just as important as the brightest, most athletic person. For some, the ultimate achievement may be winning that Olympic Gold, others obtaining a place in3rd Level College or indeed equally essential mastering the tying of their shoelaces but each is a milestone. Life for people forced to live with a disability will always be an uphill battle but it is the strength, determination and courage so prevalent in these climbs that I admire endlessly.

BRAND NEW SKY TALENT SHOW
SKY1’S brand new game show is loud, funny and a little bit naughty. A rapid-fire, high-stakes talent contest where everyone in the audience is potentially a star and wants the chance to prove it. A studio full of acts all hoping that they’ll get
called onto the stage to perform in front of the nation and win £25,000. The stage will have three different looks for three different types of acts and will see standup comics, singers and variety acts all try their hand at impressing the audience.

However, if they’re not as good as they think they are, they will be ejected from the stage - literally. With the risk of a hilarious exit via trap doors, horizontal bungees and exploding stages, it is a talent game show that takes no prisoners. The rest of the audience act as judge and jury: every member of the studio audience has a voting keypad and the moment more than half of them have had enough, it’s all over for the performer. Those who make it through the full 100 seconds performance time will line up for the final judgement in which the host will reveal who will be the winning act and walk away with £25,000 prize money.
