HE weather of recent weeks may have been ideal for those with turf to save, but some turf cutters across the west are bracing themselves for prosecution for ignoring laws preventing them from harvesting turf in protected environments. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has been liaising with gardaí in response to a number of incidents of turf- cutting detected on protected raised bogs. According to environmental groups 20 per cent of the raised bogs that Ireland are obliged to protect under European legislation are being cut illegally by turf-cutters. Following reports that a bog near Athenry, Co Galway, was cut over two weeks ago, peat is now being extracted at 11 of the 53 raised bogs that are meant to be conserved for their habitat value under Irish and European law. An Taisce and Friends of the Irish Environment have called on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to “stand over his pledge that the law would be upheld”, saying the Government’s peatland protection programme “risks being shredded unless the Taoiseach acts quickly and firmly”. The turf contractors “are being emboldened” by the failure, so far, to enforce the law. Unlawful cutting on one or two protected bogs in April had quickly risen to 11 and, “without a commitment to uphold the law, the situation could spiral out of control”, they said. Local firm and Mrs Brown to help Charity25

A SCOTTISH entrepreneur based in Sligo has put the weight of his business behind a new charity venture which will benefit 25 different charities. Jamie Grant, founder of water treatment firm Grant Water (www.grantwater.ie) is sponsor of Charity25, a new mobile subscription service which is affiliated to 25 different Irish charities, including Childline, Down Syndrome Ireland, Irish Hospice Foundation, Enable Ireland and the Marie Keating Foundation. People can simply text the word 2WILLDO to 57802 to

donate just €2 a month to the charity. The charity itself has no operating costs, so once six cents is removed by the mobile phone service providers, the remaining €1.94 goes directly to Charity25. People can opt out at any stage simply by texting the word STOP to the same number, 57802. Charity25 is launching on national radio stations To-day FM, Newstalk and 2FM with Grant Water as main sponsors of the campaign. The charity also has the support of comedian and recent BAFTA-winner Brendan O'Carroll of "Mrs Brown" fame.

Crunch time for turf-cutters continued from front Last month, Minister for Heritage Jimmy Deenihan said the EU Commission could impose fines of up to €25,000 a day on Ireland if turf-cutting occurred on bogs designated as special areas of conservation under the European habitats directive. A spokesman for the Minister said the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) was working in co-operation with the Garda in “responding to a number of incidents of turf-cutting which were detected, through aerial and ground surveillance”. A spokesman for the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs said it had made it clear to turf cutters that they faced prosecution for illegal activities on protected boglands. The Environmental Protection Agency is also investigating the alleged breaches under environmental liability regulations, which allows for remediation costs to be recovered for

damage to the environment. Forty-one landowners and contractors have been written to where environmental damage is suspected, advising them of the steps which may be taken against them. These include prosecution, the impounding of machinery and the cost of restoring protected bogs where damage has been done. The Turf Cutters and Contractors Association (who pulled out of talks with the government in April) has reacted angrily, and vowed to go ahead and cut on bogs, regardless of the fact that turfcutters may face prosecution for flouting the law, and that Ireland could be fined these significant amounts. TD Luke 'Ming' Flanagan said turfcutters were vindicating their rights by cutting this year on bogs their families have cut on for hundreds of years. He said the government had itself to blame if the country faced fines from Europe

IBS Publications, Unit 3,Riverview House, Barret Street, Ballina, Co. Mayo. Office 3, Unit 7, North West Business Park, Collooney, Co. Sligo Advertising: 071-9154538 Editorial: 096-77743

and has, colourfully, likened the turfcutters’ activities to the resistance movement of the US black civil rights heroine Rosa Parks. “There are occasions that, during the tyranny of the state, the law needs to be broken,” he said. Environmental organisations claim to have reports of gardaí “laughing and joking as they apparently stand by watching turfcutters flout the law”. No names were being taken with a view to prosecutions and no turf-cutting machines were being seized, they said. The 11 bogs being cut have been identified in Co. Galway and Co. Roscommon. There is a general feeling, however, after the successful outcome for the government in the Stability Treaty, that it, too, will become emboldened in their approach to this and other matters and the “battle for the bogs” is only beginning.

Sligo looks forward to Yeats Day I

T is hard to believe it hasn’t happened yet, after all the years, but on June 13th, the birthday of W. B. Yeats, Sligo will host its first ever Yeats Day. The day will feature a series of events to commemorate the county’s association with the world-famous poet and writer. This new initiative has the potential to attract Yeatsian enthusiasts from all over the world and will include a wide-ranging series of events of a local, national and international flavor. In fact, throughout the day more than 20 specific events are planned and the organizers say the activities are designed to “set the spirit of Yeats free in his spiritual home”. The special day is funded by the

Department of the Arts and Failte Ireland to the tune of over €12,000, and it is the first time the poet's birthday will be celebrated in Sligo in such a public manner. It brings together a unique collaboration between a number of local and national organisations, including Sligo County and Borough Councils, the County Library, the Hawk's Well Theatre, the Factory Performance Space, the Model Arts Centre and the Western Development Commission. The importance of the event is highlighted by the participation of the National Library and National Gallery. For the first time, the National Library is bringing some of its precious Yeats collection to the

Pollexfen building in Wine Street, home of Yeats' mother's family shipping business. Sligo IT will also exhibit some of its Yeats collection. Yeats was a founder member of the Abbey Theatre, and Sligo will have an opportunity to enjoy a special performance by the Abbey on the day in the Hawk's Well Theatre. The day will be officially inaugurated by Minister Jimmy Deenihan, Minister for Arts, at Yeats' burial place in Drumcliffe, while the Japanese ambassador, Mr. Atsumi, will open a Yeats inspired art exhibition by Irish-based Yoko Akino at

the Hamilton Gallery, Castle Street. The highlight of the evening, perhaps, will be an afternoon pageant, ' Happy Birthday Mr. Yeats', in O'Connell Street, which will involve youth drama groups, local schoolchildren and musicians from Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann. The day will be rounded off with a unique concert by No Crows at Sligo Abbey. The President of the local Yeats Society, Mr. Joe Cox, said he hoped the day would raise the profile of Sligo's connection with the poet, especially amongst a younger generation.

All-Ireland Pipe Band Championship launch in Ballina The prestigious All-Ireland Pipe Bands Championships will be hosted in Ballina on Saturday 7th July and Minister for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD., took the opportunity to get in some practice after launching the event, which will bring to Mayo the very best pipe bands in the thirty two counties. Achill Pipe Band members Conor Molloy and Kevin English were thrilled to tutor the tourism minister to the delight of Ballina Town Council's Town Clerk Carmel Murphy and Mayor Peter Clarke, Ballina Chamber of Commerce CEO Sandra Cribben, Michelle Mulherin TD., Moy Valley Resources' Kevin Corrigan and event host's Ballina Rugby Club's Chairman Ken Doherty.

CANNABIS worth an estimated €10,000 was seized at a house in the Ballina area on Sunday night, following a search carried out by Officers from the Mayo Divisional Drug Unit. It is reported that a man was arrested at the scene and detained for questioning. He was later released and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The previous evening, Saturday, a more substantial haul of €280,000 of cannabis plants was made following a search at a house near Tuam in Co. Galway. A man in his 30s was formally charged by Gardai. Lim Chun Wan of Corbally South, Cummer, Tuam, appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court on Monday charged with the possession of drugs for sale or supply and remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison. He will appear before Harristown District Court on Friday morning next, June 8th. The weekend’s seizures and arrests are part of an ongoing national investigation targeting the activities of individuals and criminal groups involved in drug trafficking.

Business as usual at TF Royal

W

HILE much of Mayo was shocked last week with the announcement that one of the county’s leading hotels had gone into receivership, it was business as usual at the popular TF Royal, as hotel management and staff worked to fulfil a full calendar of engagements. Management representatives have told North-West Express that they are fully commited to the successful operation of the hotel, theatre and other businesses. David Willmott, Divisional Director of BSL Management Ltd., who were appointed by the Receivers (KPMG), said no changes were planned to staffing arrangements at the either the TF Royal

or the Harlequin Hotel. It is “business as usual” for all hotel guests, suppliers, staff and clients, he said. Mr. Willmott also assured those with tickets to upcoming events at the TF Royal Theatre that no line-up changes were envisaged and patrons can look forward to continued entertainment from top acts. The TF Royal Hotel has been in the ownership of the Jennings family since the 1950s, when the Royal Ballroom was built. The venue, and Castlebar, received national prominence with the staging of the Castlebar International Song Contest decades ago.

The premises was completely redeveloped and reopened in recent years, making it the second largest live entertainment venue in the country. Since its redevelopment the TF Royal Theatre has been attracting major international shows and artists, as well as audiences from around the country. Only last weekend it was the prime venue for Mayo’s inaugural International Choral Festival. Owners/managers Pat and Mary Jennings (Pat was chosen as Mayo Person of the Year 2011), who would not comment on the development, have been praised for their contribution to the local community over the years.

Aer Lingus opens new route from Knock to Birmingham The 2011 Dip in the Nip

T

he 2012 Dip in the Nip this year will take place on Sunday, 24th June at four different locations around the country – Sligo, as in previous years, along with Clare, Cork and Meath. Each Dip is being organised in association with a local cancer charity, which will keep half of the monies raised at that Dip. The remaining money will go towards, among other things, a Scalp Cooler Fund. Scalp Coolers are pieces of equipment that minimise or prevent hair loss in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. According to Dip in the Nip organizer Máire Garvey "research shows that up to 8% of women suffering

from cancer delay or forgo chemotherapy due to the fear of hair loss, which is a shocking statistic. I hope that the provision of scalp coolers will make it easier for them to say 'yes' to appropriate treatment." There will be prizes for our Top Fundraisers (including a specially made bespoke piece of jewellery, worth €500 for the Top National Fundraiser) Oldest Dippers and Best Dressed Naked Dippers! There’ll be lots of other goodies as well. The first Dip in the Nip was held in Sligo in 2009 and 180 women from all over Ireland raised €56,000 for the Irish Cancer Society. Since then, there have

also been a number of Mens Dips, most recently the Blue September Dip in the Nip, and the first mixed Dip in the Nip in Galway recently for Hand in Hand Childrens Cancer Charity. Nearly €200,000 has been raised in total. It’s an experience that once done, will never be forgotten. As one veteran Dipper puts it, 'Cancer is such a scary thing that whipping off your clothes and running into the sea didn't seem so scary, and it's very life affirming!' Vacant houses damaged in Ballaghaderreen GARDAI IN Castlerea are investigating criminal damage to 24 houses in an estate in Ballaghaderreen. The cost of the damage is estimated at more than €6,000. On a date between May 20th and 23rd, five homes were broken into at the Shannon Valley estate in the town, with copper cylinders stolen from each house, all of which were unoccupied. On top of

this, criminal damage was carried out at 19 other vacant houses in the estate over the same period. A spokesperson for the Gardai has appealed for anyone who noticed suspicious activity on the estate to get in contact with them. Unfortunately, incidents like these are becoming all too common and makes life even more difficult for residents in such estates.

Prefabs in Mayo schools to be consigned to history - Mulherin

FINE Gael TD for Mayo, Dep Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed the news that a number of Mayo schools have been given notice to proceed by the Department of Education and Skills to replace prefabs with permanent accommodation. This follows on from the announcement of last March

that certain Mayo schools had been selected for funding as part of the Government’s drive to eliminate temporary prefab structures from Irish schools. The eight schools given notice to proceed are: Behymore NS, Ballina; Scoil Cholmcille, Breaffy, Ballina; Cooneal NS, Ballina; SN Naomh Padraig, Currabaggan, Ballina; Richmond NS, Crossmolina; Ballyvary Central NS, Castlebar; SN Chomain Naofa, Roundfort; Lankill NS; Liscarney; Deputy Mulherin said, “I am delighted that these schools have been given notice to proceed with the replacement of prefabs with permanent accommodation. The decision is as part of the Government’s plans to remove prefabs as a form of classroom accommodation in Irish schools.” “For far too long, prefabs have been regarded as the preferred way of addressing the shortage of accommodation in Irish schools. The one advantage prefabs have over permanent structures — speed of construction — is far outweighed by the many disadvantages and even over the

medium term the rental and heating costs have proven to be burdensome on education budgets.” “The government is committed to eliminating prefabs in Irish schools and following the latest announcement, 156 schools nationwide have been approved. This leaves only 32 schools that are still in discussion with the department about their prefab replacement requirements. In addition to benefitting schools, the funding will provide a boost to the construction sector and there will be jobs created as a result of this.” “I am sure that all of the pupils, teachers and parents and all involved in these schools will be delighted with this announcement. I have been working closely with the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Ruairi Quinn, for some time to secure funding for better facilities for schools. The new buildings will provide top class accommodation for students and staff alike and I am delighted to have been able to assist in whatever way I could.”

Ballina Credit Union’s third level bursary scheme 2012

B

allina Credit Union has launched their second Annual Bursary Scheme whereby one lucky student starting their third level education will be awarded a bursary of up to €8,000 in value. The winning student will be a member of Ballina Credit Union from not later than 1st August next, will be entering into the first year of a third level course of not less than three years in duration, and will have lodged a completed entry form, available at the Credit Union Office, not later than 29th September next. The successful entry will be drawn by lot. Four additional awards of €250 will also be drawn. The Chairperson of Ballina Credit Union, Mary Keane, commented that “the Bursary Scheme will go some of the way to assisting a student in the area with the costs of their third level education whilst at the same time actively promoting the operating principles of the credit union movement”. The first recipient of the Bursary, Aoife Quinn, expressed her gratitude for “the assistance it had given her and her family in meeting the costs of third level education”.

Bonniconlon's Aoife Quinn receives €6,000 in the Ballina Credit Union's Third Level Education Burdsary Scheme from Credit Union Treasurer Michael Cronin. Aoife is a Social Science student in U.C.D. Picture Henry Wills.

‘I HATE EARLY MORNINGS, we’re only paid minimum wage, my hours ruin my social life’ such complaints echo throughout canteens, corridors and offices worldwide as disgruntled workers stumble in bleary-eyed, overcoming the effects of Saturday night to the reality of work bright and early on a

The privilege that is…..working! Monday morning. Yet few people take the time to appreciate how fundamental a job and employment is to human existence. There are people who, in such challenging economic times, spend sleepless nights tossing and turning dreaming of a job. There are also those who for either physical or intellectual reasons are unable to work. There are people in developing countries forced to work 20 hours a day in degrading, dangerous conditions in order to ensure their family have one sufficient meal a day. Defined as ‘any physical activity that requires effort’ work is for many a status indicator. For others work is merely a means of income, a source of socialisation and a necessity within society. While staring at a computer screen, analysing accounts or tending to a sick animal it is common to be slightly jealous of those who appear to by choice sit at home all day, many portrayed as Jeremy Kyle fans favouring fast food and rarely moving from the couch. Yet the reality is quite the opposite.. Thirty year olds having spent years in college, hours reading, weeks studying and days cramming find themselves waking up to a day with no agenda. A day just like the one before dedicated to job searching. Feeling of hopelessness, isolation and worthlessness quickly escalate to anger and depression. Qualified doctors and lawyers apply for fast food vacancies while ambitious entrepreneurs are forced to abandon

their creativity to work on equally essential production lines. Individuals with learning and physical disabilities, for many can’t even imagine the prospect of having a job. The concept of a routine task, guaranteed income and responsibility while not exceeding the capabilities of the person, are greatly prevented by society and prejudices. Likewise, while few people are entirely satisfied with all aspects of their working

life, there is no comparison between a stuffy office complaint and that of a miner in the third world’s woes. It is insulting to complain of having ‘the worst job ever’ when there are people dying as a result of their employment in Eastern regions. While people are all too quick to criticise the decisions, attitudes and instructions of their employers and management few feel strongly enough to move on, speak face to face with their supervisors or refuse their pay check on principle. Human nature means that criticism and feelings of misfortune will always exist yet it is important that those fortunate enough to have a job realise that they are indeed fortunate. No waiting in the line for unemployment assistance or rifling through pages of notifications can overcome the benefits of working.

21 in what promises to be a night of outstanding music. The Galway line-up features some of the hottest acts from today's Irish music scene... The success story of Richie Egan shows no signs of slowing down. With Jape now a full-band concern, their leader recently scooped his second Choice Music Prize for last year's fantastic Ocean Of Frequency. Jape previously picked up the award for '09's Ritual.Away from the studio, they continue to play major festivals like Glastonbury, Electric Picnic and this year's Eurosonic and count Jack White and Brendan Benson among their fans. Not bad for an electronic-rock act started as a Redneck

Manifesto side project less than a decade ago. Fresh from the release of their eagerlyawaited second album Keep On Keepin’ On, recent HP cover stars The Riptide Movement are enjoying a wave of success that’s a long time coming. The “self-managed, self-produced, self-distributed, selfpublished” band honed their craft gigging on the streets of Dublin and are ready to take on venues around the world. Well versed in how to win over even the toughest crowd with their take on classic rock, they are renowned for their phenomenal performances. With Brian Hogan of Kila fame at the helm, Preachers Son are a collective whose mission it is to drag music back to the swamp. Eager to retain the grit, drama and attitude of true hard rock, they released their debut album Love Life & Limb in late 2010. It featured guest spots from the likes of Gavin Friday, Liam Ó Maonlaí and Kieran Kennedy. A follow-up is in the pipeline and promises to be another weighty affair. Until then, who knows who you'll find joining them on the Freezer Sessions stage? Sunshine harmonies are key for Galway garage-pop lovers Dott, one of the many effervescent new bands the Popical Island roster now boasts. With Anna McCarthy in the song-writing driver's seat, they are a primarily female proposition (though Tony Higgins keeps time) with much promise. The Breeders and Weezer are influences, as is the art of writing a catchy tune. And yes, they are as fun as all that suggests.Their live sets and debut EP Button provides the proof. THE Strypes are an exciting young beat group from Cavan who have recently taken the country by storm with their 60′s inspired sets. The Strypes are a 4-piece band, who are Singer Ross Farrelly, guitarist Josh McClorey, bassist Pete O'Hanlon and drum-

mer Evan Walsh, with an average age of just 15, and are set to be everywhere this Summer with festival dates home and abroad and right now these young mods from Cavan are all over the radio with the lead track from their first ep “You can’t judge a book by the cover”.? Radio support from Today Fm, 2fm, Dublin’s 98fm and all the regional stations has been huge, twitter support from the likes of Glen Hansard and Tommy Tiernan and an all conquering appearance on the Late Late show means the “Young Gifted and Blue” Ep reached top of the iTunes charts and is set to be one the biggest Irish releases of the year.? At a younger age most people's musical choices tend to shift between the ridiculous and the embarrassing but not so for The Strypes. Describing themselves as a 'four-piece beat group', these talented Cavan youngsters utilise their love of

retro sounds by covering the cream of the 60s in style. They may be young but they've sure got taste - dipping into the back catalogue of The Kinks, The Beatles, The Who and Billy Boy Arnold among others. Their debut single is a cover of The Beatles 'You Can't Do That' - complete with a wonderfully authentic video - and you can grab it now from iTunes.? This exciting emerging band bring Rock n Roll/Beat back to its original era, with major influences from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The four mods, ooze stage presence and are becoming recognized as credible musicians.? If you’ve heard them before then you know. If you haven’t then you don’t.?But either way you have to be there when they take to the stage in the Ruby Room at the Royal Theatre on Saturday 2nd June. Tickets only €10 are available at the door on the night. Doors open 9pm.

Each year, more movies are produced in India, where the moving image industry is referred to as Bollywood, than in Hollywood. About 1000 movies are released annually in India, about twice the output of Hollywood. The “B” in Bollywood refers to Bombai (renamed Mumbai). Bollywood movies often are quite long; 3 hours or more of dancing and singing around love as the main plot – although kissing is almost never shown on screen. Everyday, some 14 million Indian people queu for a movie, with more than 4 billion movie tickets sold annually, compared to 3 billion for Hollywood movies worldwide. C

oconut water, which came to fame as a celebrity health fad, has become an increasingly popular way to stay hydrated or recover after a workout. Filled with electrolytes like sodium and magnesium, the slightly sweet water has come to be seen as a natural alternative to sports drinks like Gatorade. That reputation may not be entirely deserved. According to a report released today by an independent health-product testing firm, the nutritional content of some brands of coconut water doesn’t live up to what’s on the label. Researchers at ConsumerLab.com tested the sodium, potassium, magnesium, and sugar content of three leading brands of coconut water, and they found that only one brand, Zico Natural, contained the stated amount for all four ingredients. The sugar and potassium content in the other two brands, Vita Coco and O.N.E., also matched the label. But the amounts of sodium and magnesium—two nutrients key to hydration—were as much as 82% and 35% lower, respectively, than the listed amount. Since the electrolyte content is one of the main selling points of these drinks, thirsty consumers may not be getting what they paid for, says Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. “When something like this becomes wildly popular, people have a tendency to look at the claims rather than reality,” says TaubDix, the author of Read It Before You Eat It. “If you’re working out and sweating a lot,

When something like this becomes wildly popular, people have a tendency to look at the claims rather than reality this isn’t going to do the trick.” Taub-Dix recommends hydrating with water instead and getting nutrients like sodium and potassium from foods such as bananas and almond butter. And unless you’re running a marathon or climbing mountains, she adds, you probably don’t need a sports drink. Tod Cooperman, the president of ConsumerLab.com, says the growing popularity of coconut water got the company’s attention and prompted the testing. “This was really the first look into what’s really in these bottles and whether or not they live up to their claims,” he says. “If you enjoy the taste of coconut water, they’re fine, but I wouldn’t rely on them for re-hydrating after strenuous exercise,” he adds. Celebrities—like Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio, shown here with a carton of O.N.E. in 2011—have helped fuel the coconut-water craze. Getty Images Arthur Gallego, the director of communications for Vita Coco, said in a statement

that he could not comment specifically on the report, as the company has not thoroughly reviewed it. He noted, however, that Vita Coco is derived from coconuts grown in multiple locations in Brazil and Southeast Asia, and that the individual cartons tested by ConsumerLab.com aren’t necessarily representative of Vita Coco’s average nutritional content. The company routinely conducts its own tests, and some variation in electrolytes be-

tween batches (or lots) is normal, he added. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not test the nutrient content of foods itself, and the agency does not specify how companies should do so. Nor do they do prohibit food and drink manufacturers from using average values if the nutrient content varies from batch to batch, as long as “a manufacturer is confident that the values obtained meet FDA’s compliance criteria.”

STOP SMOKING IN ONE HOUR AND STAY STOPPED FOR GOOD

The test results don’t mean that consumers should pass on coconut water altogether. Though some cartons may contain lower-than-expected electrolyte levels, the drinks are a healthy, low-calorie alternative to soda or fruit juice, Taub-Dix says. “If you’re looking to cut your calories and looking for something tropical, sure, but when it comes to hydration, it may not work as well as some other fluids,” she says.

How to Sleep Better in Hotels By Megan Fennell

Sleep soundly Tossing and turning on work trips and vacation? Can't sleep in your hotel room? Try these simple solutions from Michael Breus, PhD, author of Beauty Sleep.

ARE YOU OVERWEIGHT? Something special coming up - Safe Herbal Programme. Paddy and Mena MrDermott looking after your weight for over 14 years. Call: 04866327490 - Herbalife Distributors

Stuffy air

Problem: The air is stuffy, dry, and completely over-deodorized. Simple fix: If you can, open the window— you’ll sleep better in fresh air, Breus advises. If the windows are sealed (or if you’re in a particularly noisy or polluted city), turn on the fan on the air-conditioning unit as soon as you enter the room to get the air circulating. Then add moisture by running a hot, steamy shower and leaving the bathroom door open.

Too-soft mattress

Problem: Uh oh! The mattress is too soft. Simple fix: When you make your reservation, choose a room with a queen- or full-size bed instead of a king one. "Smaller mattresses have a tendency to be firmer," Breus says. If you find that the bed is uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to request another room. Ask for one that’s recently been redone. Why? It’s more likely to have a newer (read: firmer) mattress.

Thin walls Problem: The walls are incredibly thin—you can hear everything. Simple fix: Book a corner room on a high floor, so you’ll be farther from street noise and less likely to have two bothersome neighbors. But if you end up near a high-volume-TV lover, bring a small white noise machine or earplugs (with a noise-level rating of 32 or less, so you can hear your alarm and the smoke alarm). Or put white noise on your iPod.

Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton star in Sims 3 Diamond Jubilee parody

tech news & science

More music downloads sold than CDs

D LIFE-SIMULATION game The Sims 3 has released a parody of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, with Prince Harry portrayed as a champagne-popping Sim party boy.The one-minute clip is the latest in a series of videos released by EA lampooning real life events to highlight the humour at the core of the Sims series. Released on YouTube, it sees picnics in public parks with Union Jack-coloured paraphernalia, Sims kissing outside Tube stations and buskers playing for commuters as a message reads: 'This June the whole of Great Britain will come together for the party of a lifetime…to celebrate someone very special…one of the most beloved women on the planet…' A Sim version of the Queen then appears before the camera quickly switches to a computer-animated Pippa Middleton being papped by photographers. Prince Harry also features, portayed as a party boy popping champagne and kissing girls in some Jubilee-themed swim shorts. The clip, designed to show the versatility of the Sims 3 world, finishes with the message 'Congratulaitions Queen Elizabeth II on your Diamond Jubilee from all your loyal Sims'. Bolu Akindoyin, senior product manager for The Sims 3, said: 'The sense of humour that players invest within their own games is becoming more and more prolific so it was a natural fit to highlight The Sims 3 brand through comedy; an arena with broad appeal that we are hoping will attract new players to the franchise.'

Pippa Middleton bum hysteria even features in the clip

igital music revenues have overtaken those for CDs for the first time, marking a milestone for the music industry. Income from downloads and streaming services made up 56% of the £156 million that music buyers spent in the first quarter of the year. Figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) show cash from digital sales has risen by nearly a quarter, year on year, to £86.5 million. At the same time, revenue from physical formats, such as CD and vinyl, slumped by 15%, and now represents just £69.3 million. Album downloads have soared by 22% during the first three months of the year. They bring in more income than single downloads, and this is the second successive quarter in which this has occurred. For many years the music industry seemed to be fighting a losing battle to convince people to pay for online music, with many sim-

ply trading it for free. But the new figures suggest paid-for services have become more of the norm. BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said of the first quarter results: "This is a significant milestone in the evolution of the music business. UK record labels have embraced digital to their core, supporting innovation and licensing more new online and mobile services than any other country." He emphasised that there was still strong demand for CDs, particularly in the Christmas market. Figures recently published in the BPI's yearbook show that last year physical formats still represented 64.6% of UK music sales for the year overall. Last year the UK music industry as a whole was worth £795 million, down 3.4% on the previous year. It was worth £1.2 billion in 2003. Mr Taylor added that the prospects of growth for the industry looked brighter than they have for many years.

48% 'regularly use social networks'

PEOPLE in Scotland use online social networking sites more than any other part of the UK or Ireland, a study has shown. The survey by BT revealed that about 48% of

those using the internet in Scotland regularly access social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, compared with 20% in Northern Ireland and almost 43% in Wales.

In England, the figures are 33% in the North East, 39% in the South West and 45.7% in London. Social networks are equal to news and current affairs websites in terms of popularity north of the border, with those sites also regularly accessed by just over 48% of Scottish internet surfers. These sites were closely followed by information websites, such as Wikipedia, at almost 43%, and online shopping at just over 41%. The survey, involving more than 2,000 people earlier this year, also showed that women are twice as dependent on social media as men, with 18% of women compared with 7% of men admitting they would miss social networking sites the most if the internet no longer existed. BT Scotland director Brendan Dick said: "This research makes it clearer than ever how Scotland and the UK as a whole have embraced the internet across all aspects of life and, in particular, shows the different way UK men and women use the internet. "People now take for granted that they can manage their life all in one place, from shopping and banking to entertainment and social media."

Fire-breathing vicar delivers smoking sermon at church

Bridge over troubled waters leaves its mark on luxury liner in China

Cheltenham vicar Nick Davies has celebrated the Pentecost by entertaining his congregation with his fire-breathing party trick.

T

Children at the front of the church look on as Reverend Nick Davies shows off his fire-breathing skills. Inset: Reverend Nick Davies said he was pleased with churchgoers' reaction to his fire-breathing

he Reverend Nick Davies of St Philip and St James' Church said he had wanted to relate the story told in the Bible of how the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus' disciples for the first time as 'tongues of flame'. Rev Davies, who explained he originally learned to fire-breathe to impress people at barbecues, said: 'I don't get many ooh's and aah's and gasps during my sermon but I did this morning.' Around 150 people were in the church to witness the trick, and fortunately nothing caught fire despite the flames. 'There were some suggestions that some people would like us to get rid of the pews, and this could be a good opportunity - but I resisted temptation,' Rev Davies continued. The 44-year-old added: '[The Pentecost story] reminds us that God is like a roaring fire who blazes with love for us and our world. 'It was good to give people a little bit of a wow sense of going to church, of the day of Pentecost, and if we can send people home with a little bit of that wow factor then it's a morning well spent.'

Mud pit jumping and toilet seat tossing feature in annual Redneck Olympics Just weeks before the London 2012 Olympics kick off, Americans have been taking part in a rather different competition - the 16th annual Redneck Olympics. THE event, which took place in East Dubin, Georgia, kicked off with the traditional lighting of a torch made from a beer can - and carried on with some rather unusual events. Those taking part had the chance to bob for pig's trotters, throw themselves into mud pits and take part in toilet seat tossing in a bid to win one of the tournament's beer can-shaped trophies. The event also featured a headline set from singer Daniel Johnston. The Games originally began in 1996 - the year that the summer Olympics were held in Atlanta - and were created by a local radio broadcaster in response to a remark that the Games 'were being held by a bunch of rednecks'. More than 5,000 people turned up to the first-ever Games, with a further 95,000 having attended in the past ten years.

IT was a clear case of ‘Should’ve Gone To Specsavers’ as this luxury liner met with a bridge over troubled water – and failed to clear it. The Pearl No.7 – which is as tall as a seven-storey building – sailed straight into disaster as she tried to pass under a bridge. Luckily no one was hurt, but the boat came out a little shorter than when she went in – losing a chimney in the collision in east China on Wednesday. Reports said the ship had completed a sea trial only the day before. The deluxe cruiser is equipped with a shopping mall and entertainment centre for up to 1,000 people. Pictures also show that the bridge, in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, didn’t escape the collision unscathed – it now has an almost perfect chimney-shaped hole in its side. Sources said the accident had been caused by ‘miscommunication’ about the vessel’s height. Before striking the bridge, the ship was being towed to a downtown terminal in preparation for the National Day holiday in October.

Hungry seal terrorises fisherman THE unidentified man appeared to be enjoying a day's fishing with a group of friends aboard a set of kayaks when he received some unexpected company. Seconds after teasing his friend about the lack of fish he had caught, the drifter got a dose of karma when a seal began attacking the side of his kayak. Despite repeated cries of 'What are you doing?', the marine mammal took little notice of his pleas as it ducked and dived around the kayak. Making its way to the nose of the kayak, the seal then leaped out of the water in an attempt to mount the water vehicle, much to the amusement of the fisherman's friends. The persistent mammal eventually made it aboard, after several splashes and failed landing attempts, where it made a beeline for the fish caught earlier in the day lying on deck.

HE Watergate at Enniskillen CastleEnniskillen is the County Town of Fermanagh, located almost exactly in the Centre of the County on the natural island which separates the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. Enniskillen is home to a population of approximately 11,500, by far the largest settlement in the County. The busy Main Street of Enniskillen with the Townhall at the top of the hillEnniskillen town centre is firmly built along the long, narrow Main St, which actually changes name six times along its length! This gives Enniskillen a real sense of bustle and life as well as imbuing the shops with their own unique character. High Street Stores sit

comfortably beside small independent traders, creating a special atmosphere for the place. One of the key images that a visitor to Enniskillen may take home with them is the proximity of the Lough to the town. Moorings just outside the town centre certainly ease the pressure for parking spaces and add a continental feel to the town. As one would expect, Enniskillen is a retail centre for the County, and beyond, and a lively hub of activities, events and things to do throughout the year. If you’re not cruising on the lakes in Co. Fermanagh or fishing, here’s a selection of other things to visit or things to do. 2. Drive near Monea Castle... On the right-hand side, you can see a photo taken near Monea Castle. County Fermanagh is still overall quite rural and has got quite a lot of forests, green fields and lakes. I thought this view is both nice and representative of this county, despite the grey sky... 3. Visit Enniskillen Town... Enniskillen (from the Irish: Inis Ceithleann meaning "Ceithleann's island") is the County town in County Fermanagh. It is located almost exactly in the centre of the county be-

tween the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It has a population of approximately 11,500. On the right-hand side, you can see a photo of a part of the town, crossed by River Erne. 4. Visit the buttermarket of Enniskillen... The buttermarket is an area of Enniskillen, which has been converted into an Irish art and craft centre, specialised in sale and promotion of Irish and European craft products (paintings, sculptures, vases etc.).There you'll also be able to meet local artists.

1.Take a stroll in Ely Lodge Forest... Ely Lodge Forest is a pretty quiet place, not very well known by tourists and located only a few kilometres from Enniskillen. Note that the forest extends over 250 ha by the Lough Erne, and its planting began in 1940.

5. Visit Enniskillen Castle... Enniskillen Castle was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires chieftains. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century, it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. This historic site now houses 2 museums.
