A

midst cabinet re-shuffles and matters hotting up for coalition parties in government came the news this week that one-fifth of workers in Ireland are earning less than the living wage.

According to the trade union, UNITE, one in five people in the working population earn less than €11.45 per hour. The weekly wage that’s required to have a minimum essential standard of living, they say, is €446 per week.

UNITE’s regional secretary, Jimmy Kelly, described the wages of workers in hospitality, administrative support and retail sectors as poverty pay and claimed that “nearly 20% of construction workers also earn less.”

All of this ties in with a Report by Social Justice Ireland which states that 16% of those below the poverty line in Ireland are actually employed. The evidence is also borne out by spokespersons for St. Vincent de Paul in towns across the north-west who confirmed to us that despite the apparent uplift the numbers of employed people seeking assistance is still increasing. The recent FLAC Report for 2013 pointed to a 26% increase in mortgage and credit/debt-related queries to their offices while queries on housing related issues rose by over 80% More and more organisations are pointing to poverty and the consequent dampening of consumer demand as the major obstacle to a sustainable wageled recovery in the economy. They point to London where there is a voluntary living wage structure in place now for a number of years. Boris Johnson, the Conservative Mayor of London, earlier this year noted the success of the living wage in London in improving living conditions and stimulating economic growth: “the Living Wage is not only morally right, but makes good business sense too.”

Sale of Mayo Hotel for €230,000

A

THREE-STAR hotel in Mayo sold for€230,000 at an Allsop Space Auction in Dublin last week.

Abhainn Mor Lodge, formerly Teach Iorrais Hotel, Geesala, was purchased by local organisation,

Comharchumann Forbartha Cill tSeadhna Teo at last Tuesday’s Auction.

There was one other

bidder at the auction, but they failed to meet the €230,000 reserve price.

The local co-operative society was established initially with a view to applying for funding for a Community Services Programme and is now an umbrella organisation for Meals on Wheels, Kiltane Community Laundry, Kiltane Innovative Club for Kids and for events such as Crinniu na mBad and the Gathering events in 2013.

In the coming weeks the group will seek submissions from the community regarding a suitable name for the building, uses and ideas for funding.

While the group are very positive about the future prospects for the project they were shocked to discover on their return that the hotel had been robbed that morning. Furniture and railings were stolen and the matter is under investigation

reduce staff numbers, which would make the initiative counterproductive. However, as economic conditions generally improve it is up to the government (and public servants) to manage finance public finances appropriately, use taxation measures or introduce wage subsidies, if necessary.

€70k worth of cannabis plants seized in Roscommon Gardaí have seized €70,000 worth of cannabis plants in Co Roscommon.

They have also arrested and charged a 26-year-old man in the intelligence-led operation.

Gardaí from the Roscommon/Longford Divisional Drug Unit searched the house in Fourmilehouse, Co. Roscommon on Friday and found 87 cannabis plants in the house.

The man appeared before Sligo District Court on Saturday, where he was remanded in custody and will appear before Harristown Distict Court on Friday.

Three-day Cowboys and Heroes festival for Leitrim

INE dancing enthusiasts are urged to don their cowboy hats, jeans and boots as Leitrim’s Drumcoura gets ready to host the country’s first three-day Americana Country music festival on September 5, 6 and 7.

Many well-known country artistes and performers were on hand to launch the Cowboys and Heroes Festival in the village close to Ballinamore.

The music line up includes Mike Denver, Jimmy Buckley, Richie Remo,

Lee Matthews, Ray Lynam, Brian Coll, John Garrity, Cujo Family, Felix Sonnyboy and Ireland’s top Garth Brooks tribute show Friends in Low Places, plus many more!

But the weekend doesn’t end there, as well as the sounds of America, you will also get to immerse yourself in everything from the Wild West to the rocking 50s!

Attractions include American Car show, Western Horse Show, Lasso Show, Barrel Racing, Large Dance Floor in

indoor arena, American Saloon Bar (complete with swinging doors), Bluegrass Children’s Workshop, Line Dancing performances and classes and Eddie Rocket’s Shake Shack!

The idea for the festival had originally started out as a one-day event, but more and more people wanted to get involved. The huge indoor arena can cater for a maximum of 5,000 fans.

There will be a huge stage – not to mention an even bigger dance floor for country music fans.

“American country music is so popular right now with interest from young, old and families” explained Simon Power, organizer.

He says “thousands attend country music concerts every week” and added that this festival will give musicians as well as fans a chance to play, dance, sing and celebrate the music together.

Simon Power said they will be marketing this festival to a national audience and hope to attract large numbers from Northern Ireland with their close proximity to the border.

He said they have been “blown away” by the local buisness support in the Ballinamore region, and he added that a festival like this, if held annually, could become a huge attraction for the region.

Castlebar broadcaster Michael Murphy retires

RTÉ newsreader and Castlebar native Michael Murphy has announced his retirement after a 43-year career with the national broadcaster.

The renowned newsreader signed off for the last time on RTÉ radio last week on Sunday afternoon’s News at One. He is also a renowned

psychologist and a successful author. Mr Murphy started his broadcasting career with the state broadcaster as a continuity announcer in 1971 before he was appointed as a bilingual newsreader, reading the news in both English and Irish on radio and television.

He worked as a television producer and director and returned to the newsroom as a senior newscaster in 1990 before embarking on a new career as a psychoanalyst and returning to RTE in a parttime capacity.

Mr Murphy told The Irish Independent he would continue to work as a psychoanalyst at Psychological Therapy Services in Sandyford, south Dublin, which he founded

with his partner, psychologist Terry O’Sullivan.

He confirmed he would continue to do a ‘psychoanalytic residency’ slot on RTE One’s ‘Today Show’ with Daithi Ó Se. He said he hoped to spend more time in Spain now that he was freed up from weekend work with RTÉ Radio. Mr Murphy is currently working on the third of three novels on his own struggle with prostate cancer.

He has already written ‘At Five in the Afternoon: My Battle with Male Cancer’, a superbly frank treatise of his own personal history, and ‘The House of Pure Being’.

His third book is entitled ‘Lemons and The Waning of the Moon’.

Fleadh Cheoil receives huge ARDNAREE TOOL & PLANT HIRE community engagement

xcellent response to call for visitor accommodation and volunteers With the all-Ireland Fleadh

now just over 40 days away, preparations for this huge event are entering the final stages. With up to 350,000

people expected to visit Sligo for the Fleadh, a combined effort from the businesses, people and communities of Sligo will ensure that visitors leave with a very positive and memorable impression of Sligo and its people. The organisers would like to thank most sincerely the people and communities of Sligo who have engaged with them so far in the lead up to the Fleadh. This has resulted in many people offering to help on a voluntary basis in running the Fleadh and its various events. To date over 350 people have opened up their own homes to visitors by making spare accommodation available. This is necessary as there will not enough accommodation within the county to serve all visitors.

People hosting visitors in their own homes is a very important component of the event. It showcases to the many thousands of overseas visitors that the Irish welcome and friendly sprit is still very much alive and well in Sligo.

Hardy Bucks star cleared of assault

H

ARDY Bucks star and Swinford native Martin Maloney was cleared of assault causing harm at Dublin District Court last week.

The 30 year old, formerly of Bollingbrook Drive, and now living in Sweden with his wife and child, pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault causing harm at The Big Tree in Drumcondra on October 9, 2012.

It was alleged that while making a public appearance at the infamous Mayo haunt, Maloney became involved in an altercation with security staff member Brian Smith over the queuing system at the toilets and the route back to the stage area where he was working as a DJ. The prosecution had alleged that Maloney grabbed Mr Smith in a headlock from behind and held him on the ground before punching him repeatedly.

It was also alleged the actor was being forcibly removed when he struck a Mr O’Shaughnessy with a kick.

The judge found the actor not guilty after she viewed the CCTV evidence which contradicted the men’s evidence.

Mr Smith had alleged he had been at a balcony when he

was grabbed from behind by the actor, put in a headlock and punched 20 to 30 times to his head.

In CCTV evidence Smith was shown in a face-to-face confrontation with the actor, before there was a scuffle and one punch could be seen thrown at the security man, the judge said.

Mr O’Shaughnessy claimed

that the defendant was acting aggressively and had to be forcibly removed via a fire exit.

However, Judge Watkin noted from the CCTV evidence that Mr Maloney was not being restrained and was calm and silent at that point.

Maloney rose to fame for playing the role of Eddie Durkan in the hit mock

documentary programme following the antics of five down on their luck young men.

The popular cult comedy started out as “webisodes” broadcast online but was later picked up by RTÉ and the cast also went on to star in the feature film titled ‘The Hardy Bucks Movie’ released last year.

AIB Photojournalism Exhibition 2014 opens in AIB Ballina

he AIB Photojournalism Exhibition 2014, a collection of awardwinning and highly commended images from the AIB Photojournalism Awards, is now on display in AIB Bank, Ballina, until Friday 11th July 2014.

The exhibition was officially opened yesterday evening (03.07.14) by Benny Walkin, Chairman of the Ballina Salmon Festival, at a reception held by Branch Manager, Seamus Cronin, joined by Henry Wills, regional representative of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland.

The awards, which are the annual awards of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, took place at a ceremony in the RDS, Dublin, in February and were presented

by Taoiseach Enda Kenny T.D. Almost 2,000 images were entered by 112 Photojournalists from around Ireland into this year’s awards, which reward and recognise excellence in the field of photojournalism. In

total 28 awards were presented by Taoiseach Enda Kenny T.D., across nine categories - news, daily life, sports action, sports feature, portrait, environment, politics, arts & entertainment and reportage, as well as the overall title of AIB Photojournalist of the Year 2014.

This year’s AIB Photojournalist of the Year 2014 is Julien Behal, of Maxwell Photography, who scooped the award for the second time, having previously won the title in 2012. In his winning portfolio Julien received five AIB Photojournalism Awards. Three of Julien’s awards were for images taken in his current role as photojournalist with Maxwell Photography, 1st Prize Portrait, 1st Prize Politics and 2nd Prize Reportage. While two of his awards, 1st Prize News and 2nd Prize Portrait, were taken on assignments for Press Association of Ireland.

South Sligo Summer School ~ The 28th Year

T

he 28th Year of the South Sligo Summer School of traditional music, song and dance will take place in Tubbercurry, Co Sligo from Sunday 13th to Saturday 19th July 2014.

The whole community of Tubbercurry and the surrounding area is ready to welcome visitors from near and far, many making return visits and lots more who will be coming to participate in the school for the first time. Accommodation is still needed and enquiries continue to come in from families and individuals. If you have any available accommodation please contact a member of the summer school organising committee.

As well as a packed programme of workshops, classes, recitals, concerts and céilís, the organising committee is delighted to announce a number of new and innovative featuresfor 2014, including a series of three Composition Workshops on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon.

These workshops are suitable for experienced musicians who would like to try their hand at composing traditional tunes under the listening ear and watchful eye of fiddle tutor, composer and Sligo style traditional musician Gavin Collis. Gavin will be joined on Friday for the final workshop by renowned traditional composer Charlie Lennon. Participants will have the opportunity to play their newly composed tunes for Charlie, get some invaluable feedback, share ideas and learn from a master in the composition of Irish traditional dance tunes

and airs.

Afternoon Masterclasses are another added feature of this year’s school. Manus Maguire will give a fiddle masterclass on Tuesday 15th July from 4 to 6 pm and on Wednesday morning from 10 am to 1 pm while Michelle and Louise Mulcahy will give masterclasses in concertina and flute respectively, from 4 to 6 pm on Tuesday, 15th July and again on Thursday, 17th July. Manus, a native of Sligo, has a wealth of playing and teaching experience and we are delighted to have him facilitate this Masterclass workshop. The Mulcahy sisters, from Abbeyfeale in West Limerick, are, along with their dad, Mick Mulcahy, a very well-known and highly regarded musical family in traditional circles. Michelle has taught harp at the summer school in recent years and so we are delighted to welcome her back and to have Louise on board also. Louise has just released her first solo album and it has been very well received.

Registration for all classes and workshops takes place from 8.30 am on Monday morning, 14th July at St. Brigid’s Hall. 'Horrendous' Scottish Athletes' Uniforms Slated

Remote-Controlled Contraceptive Chip Unveiled

he uniforms to be worn by Scotland's athletes at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games have been criticised as "horrendous", "embarrassing" and "humiliating".

Organisers say the Jilli Blackwood-designed outfits "inject a contemporary twist" to the traditional tartan uniforms of previous Games.

This time, the men will wear a "vibrant" blue shirt and a tartan kilt with a "caramel-coloured hue" at the Glasgow event on July 23.

The women will wear a "flowing wrap-around dress, giving a nod to the blue of the saltire" and a tartan shawl. They will also have a stone-coloured leather bag.

Ms Blackwood said: "My brief from Team Scotland was to come up with a parade uniform that was high on impact and made a real statement, but also had a contemporary feel. "There will be no mistaking that this is the Scottish Team as they proudly step out at the Opening Ceremony." But many people commenting on the team's Facebook page did not seem impressed by the designs.

Laura Mahady wrote: Humiliating for anyone who has to wear these outfits." Sharron Mag Bhradaigh said: "P45 for the "designer" that is just a shocking combination, total embarrassment." Melissa MacLennan wrote: "What a shame for the athletes who have worked so hard to get to the

Commonwealth Games for a designer to put them in this!!"

And Stacey Lauder added: "They are horrific but entirely unimportant. Let's focus on the team not the outfits."

Clare Louise Schoeman said: "It's horrendous and I feel really sorry for the poor athletes having to wear it." However, Scotland wrestler Lewis Waddell hit back, by saying: "Thanks from all the 2014 Scottish athletes for the negative comments on here! We like it, we're wearing it, end of."

Cyclist Charline Joiner, who helped model the new uniform, said: "It's refreshing and a definite surprise! I was expecting a kilt,

but love the fact the girls are in dresses this time as it’s more feminine and it’s still got the blue of Scotland in it.

"I love the fact it's different and also love the fact it’s got a little bag because the boys have always had a sporran, but we’ve never had anywhere to put our phones and other items."

Squash player Frania GillenBuchert who led the uniform athlete consultation process added: "I love the tartan and I think we’ll look great …and we’ll definitely be seen as we march last into Celtic Park for the Opening Ceremony as the home team."

Rugby 7s player Lee Jones described it as 'very comfortable and eye catching' whilst teammate Scott Wight, added: "I'm now really looking forward to wearing it at the Opening Ceremony."

And Facebook user Barrah Safaris said: "Love the tartan, nice and bright and the idea of the shirts/dresses looking like ripples in a swimming pool."

Gemma Park said: "I love it. It's vibrant, fresh and bold. We will stand out. Go Team Scotland!!"

Anne Lennox Burr added: "I think it looks great."

Celtic Park is the venue for the Opening Ceremony

A remote-controlled contraceptive chip implanted under the skin could provide birth control for up to 16 years.

The chip is 2cm-square and seven millimetres thick, and will go into clinical testing next year.It delivers a daily dose of 30mg of levonorgestrel, which is already widely used. If and when a woman wants to conceive, she can use a remote control to temporarily turn the chip off.

The chip has been created by a company called MicroCHIPS, based in Massachusetts.

Inside the chip is a reservoir which contains and protects the hormone. A minute electrical current from a small internal battery causes the chip to release each dose.

A local anaesthetic is used to implant the chip, and the procedure takes around 30 minutes.

If the contraceptive chip works, potentially any drug could be placed in the reservoir to be released on demand or on a set schedule.

Pre-clinical trials – backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation – will begin next year. It could be on the market by 2018.

Eye Implant 'Drastically Cuts Glasses Use'

Pink Floyd To Release First Album In 20 Years

ink Floyd will release a new album later this year, the band's first in 20 years.

Polly Samson, the wife of guitarist David Gilmour

tweeted: "Btw Pink Floyd album out in October is called 'The Endless River'.

"Based on 1994 sessions is Rick Wright's swansong and very beautiful."

Wright, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, died in 2008 from cancer.

Backing vocalist Durga McBroom-Hudson also confirmed the news in a post

on Facebook, writing: "YES. THERE IS A NEW PINK FLOYD ALBUM COMING OUT. AND I'M ON IT. And there was much rejoicing."

Responding to fans who commented on her Facebook page, McBroom-Hudson said Roger Waters, who left the band in 1985, would not feature. A source close to the project told The Sun: "This will be one of the most exciting pieces of music for decades because it is the closest we will ever come to a Pink Floyd comeback." A spokesman also told the paper there will be no tour to accompany the album's release.

The band achieved worldwide fame in the 1970s and 1980s with albums including The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.

After numerous line-up changes over the years, founding members Dave Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright reunited in 2005 to perform at Live 8 in Hyde Park.

New technology said to reduce patients' need for glasses by up to 90% could prove revolutionary for those who suffer from bad eyesight.

A plastic lens implant called Symfony is surgically inserted into the eye to sharpen focus and for the first time will help improve longsightedness. The procedure involves cutting out the eye's natural lens with a 3mm incision. The replacement, which extends the range of vision, is implanted via the same cuts. Surgeon Bobby Qureshi claims those who have already had the operation felt the benefits the following day.

He told Sky News: "It gives fantastic distance vision, very good - if not perfect middle vision and between 80 and 90% of people don't need glasses for reading.

"But a small proportion of people may need them for small print," he added.

Although the operation lasts just 15 minutes and is said to be painless, it is an expensive treatment which costs around £4,000 per eye.

Patient Justin Greaves, who was suffering from the onset of cataracts, hopes that the Symfony will mean he doesn't have to continue using multiple pairs of glasses for driving, reading and computer use.

The day after receiving the implant he said: "On an hour by hour basis I can see a dramatic improvement in terms of the clarity of vision.

"It's too early to tell about the effect of the lens but I can already see it's better."

Noeleen Kerins receives special award

Noeleen Kerins, former Connaught Regional Secretary, for 29 years, received a special Award at the River View Horse Show to honour the many hears of dedication and support she has given to show-jumping in the Connaught Region. Also present in the photo is Noeleen’s husband Francie Kerins.

H

er first interest started with horses at a very young age when her father always kept ponies for her. She spent many years attending her local pony club and also competing at local shows.

In 1969 she joined Bank of Ireland working in Dublin for 3 years and later was transferred to Ballina where she worked for a number of years.

Her main interest was hunting, where

she meet her husband Francie, they had three children, Darragh, Richard and Fran, who now are all involved in horses.

Darragh now lives in West Palm Beach, Florida, with his wife Sarah and two children Daniel and Khloe where they own Inishfree Stables. Darragh was also a member of the winning Nations Cup Team for Ireland in the RDS in 2012.

Richard owns and operates Tubberbride Stables in Collooney, Co. Sligo, has three horses qualified for the RDS Horse Show in Dublin in August.

Fran who is also involved with horses competing in the Amateur competitions throughout the country. She was a very active member of the Sligo Harriers Hunt with whom she hunted with for many years.

She won a number of Point to Point races and she was also on the Sligo Harriers winning Hunt Chase inn 1986, which won at the Dublin Horse Show in 1987. Then went on to win again at the Royal Show in England.

In 1980 she joined the Committee of The Connaught Region and in 1984 she was appointed as Secretary of the Connaught Region where she spent 29 years representing the Connaught Region.

With her vast knowledge of the Showjumping World, she served as a First class Regional Secretary in every way and provided invaluable advice and assistance to Show Committees establishing new Shows. Once established she continued to liaise and help in any way she could with Show Committees throughout the Region.

She now as always oversees and manages Tubberbride Stables.

She continues to officiate at Shows as a Senior National Judge. She is as always diplomatic, approachable and a pleasure to deal with.

Ballymote, Co. Sligo

allymote, begun in 1300, was the last and the mightiest of the Norman castles in Connaught. It was built some distance from an earlier motte by Richard de Burgo, the great Red Earl of Ulster, in order to protect his newly won possessions in Sligo. Almost square in plan with massive three-quarter round towers at each angle, it is the most symmetrical of all the Irish "keepless" castles and bears an unmistakable resemblance to the inner ward of Beaumaris in Anglesea (begun 1295). There was a formidable double towered gate in the centre of the north wall and subsidiary D-shaped towers in the centre of the east and west curtain walls.

Recent excavations revealed that the gate towers now largely demolished, were protected by a double skin of external walling. A postern gate planned for the centre of the south wall was never completed, probably because of the events of 1317, when the castle was lost to the O'Connors.

Possession of the castle from 1317 until 1584 alternated between the O'Connors and the MacDonaghs. A lack of occupation levels implies that the building was virtually abandoned during these years. In 1584 it was taken by the notorious governor of Connaught, Richard Bingham, and remained an English base until lost to Red Hugh O'Donnell in 1598. It was here that O'Donnell assembled his forces on route to

Kinsale in 1601. In 1652 the castle was surrendered by the Taaffes to parliamentary forces, and in 1690 it was captured by the Williamites, who soon afterwards had it dismantled and the moat filled in.

Caves of Kesh, Ballymote Co. Sligo

T The first church in Ireland by George Goldie with the foundartion stone laid in October 1859. Construction was delayed by a masons’ strike with the church finally opened in September 1864. Drawings of the building were shown at the Architectural Exhibition, London in 1861. The church has an unusually heavy-looking tower with corner turret and spire. The interior has a fine roof over arches supported on attractive stone columns.

he limestone Caves of Kesh are located half way up the side of a mountain and can be reached by a 200 m assent up a steep grassy slope. There are many mythological stories associated with these caves including the legend that Cormac Mac Art, a famous King of Ireland was reputedly born and raised in them by a she wolf.

Diarmuid and Gráinne are also said to have taken refuge from the vengeful Fionn mac Cumhail in one of the caves and the festival of Lughnasa, a festival to honour the Celtic God Lugh was also held on the top of this mountain on the last Sunday in July (‘Garland Sunday’). The area around the caves is one of the richest places in Ireland for archeology and the prehistoric Keshcorran passage tomb crowns the summit of the mountain. Human remains and animal bones of cave bears, arctic lemmings, reindeer and Irish elk have been found here, some dating back 10,000 years. The views are also stunning.

ligos Big Brother will take place from 17-20th July in Ballygawley Village. 12 participants will enter the Big Brother House. The public will have their chance to have their say on the contestants through an online voting system. The whole show can be viewed live on www.visitballygawley.com The Big Brother garden will be open to the public from Friday 18th with a Kids movie being shown at 7pm. The garden will open at 1pm on the Saturday with live music from Ryan Hennessy and Tabby. You can catch up on the going on’s in the Big Brother house as it will be live on the Gig-Rig, On Sunday the garden will also open at 1pm with music from 5 piece band BackWater Jack . Over the course of the four days the contestants will take part in 6 trials, 2 of which will be outdoor and open to the public to view.The Big Brother Exit will happen around 7pm when they will make their way to a nearby hotel for a final festival party.

If the big brother experience is not for you there is plenty of other things going on over the weekend to keep all ages entertained.

On Saturday Stand-Up paddling will take place on Ballygawley Lake from 11am to 3pm for all ages (all you have to do is show up). Face painting, bouncing castles, games and a drumming workshop by Itchy Feet Drummers will keep the little ones entertained. The Road Safety Authority Shuttle Bus will be in attendance along with the very popular Farmyard in your School Yard. For any of the aspiring Rachel Allens there is The Sligo Bake Off to test your skills. Cakes need to be in the big brother garden by 1pm on Sunday the 20th for judging at 3pm. Kids enter FREE all weekend with an adult weekend ticket 15 euro available from Sligo Gate Collooney, Mc Tiernans Daybreak. n Saturday the 2nd of August 2014 the 68th annual North Sligo Agricultural Show will be held in Grange. The North Sligo Agricultural Show has a long tradition within the local community. The first North Sligo Agricultural Show actually took place on Wednesday, September 12, 1945. However, due to the ‘foot and mouth’ crisis a few years ago, the annual show had to be cancelled. During 1945 Grange village was very much isolated and had no running water or electricity. There were very few cars or tractors.

Nevertheless, the first show attracted 1,150 entries. There were up to 100 classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, agricultural produce, woodwork, homecrafts, knitting, needlework, crochet, poultry and eggs, cattle, horses, sheep and donkeys. Since then the show has grown from

strength to strength, which has been possible through local community support and participation of volunteers. Many agricultural shows have run into difficulties in recent years, with some disappearing altogether, but the North Sligo event is continuing to be run very successfully.

The committee are hoping that the weather, Declan Nerney and the new competions can continue to bring a big crowd this year.

The show gets under way at 11am with the cattle and sheep judging, followed by the confined sheep classes starting at 11:30 for .This year there are several horse and pony classes commencing at 12pm and donkey showing at 2pm.

The afternoon programme gets underway at 12:30pm in the Show field. There will be the usual classes in agricultural produce such as vegetables,

There will also be a number of family fun side attractions such as the dog show, pets corner, bonny baby show, fancy dress, face painting, best dressed lady, little Miss and Mr Grange, novelty sports events, a bouncy castle and vintage car and machinery display.

Guess the weight of the lamb competition will return again this year with the chance to win the lamb if you guess its correct weight and start your own sheep flock!

One of this years big attractions will be dancing to Declan Nerney from 3-5pm.The show is also holding The North West open N.P. heifer suitable for Suckling, with a prize fun of €1000 for this class and the winner will receive the John Burke memorial Perpetual Cup. Two other major classes are The Western Forestry Co-op open lamb championship for the best

Lurcher showing and racing are back again this year.

Gene Gallagher is working in partnership with the show committee to organise these classes along with Working Terrier classes. The highlight of the Working Terriers competition is the Champion of Champion All Ireland Qualifier whose final will be held at Strabane Show.

The O’Carolan Harp & Traditional Music Festival The popularity of the event is increasing. There is expert tuition by accomplished, well known music,dance and song tutors each morning - with other opportunities to play in sessions each evening in various venues around the village.

T

he O Carolan Harp and Traditional Music Festival has been held in Keadue since 1978 and was initiated to commemorate Turlough O Carolan ( 1670-1738 ) , the last of the Irish Bards. His remains are interred at Kilronan Cemetery which overlooks scenic Lough Meelagh on the outskirts of the village.

In 1993 the O'Carolan Park was officially opened and a specially commissioned sculpture modelled on O'Carolan's Harp unveiled as its centrepiece . The Festival has developed into an international celebration of the harp - alongside the tradition of our world renowned music, song and dance.

Other highlights throughout the festival include ceilis, concerts, lectures and a door dancing competition. This last event is a sample of the entertainment enjoyed in country house dances in years gone by.

We are delighted to have hosted many of the most prestigious exponents of traditional music in our 30+ years. National and International artists from the Douglas Gunn Ensemble in our first year , through The Chieftains , De Danann , Stocktons Wing , Patrick Street , Altan , Sharon Shannon , Dervish to name but a few. Not to mention those playing in sessions up and down the village - inside and out - mainly in sunshine but sometimes not.

Harpists of the highest calibre from around the globe have been drawn to Keadue and to O'Carolan , such is the lure of the music and the gravitas of O Carolan's contribution to harping.

The tradition continues through a new generation of musical talent.

The O'Carolan Summer School is held on the week preceding the August Bank Holiday Weekend (first weekend in August each year)

About Turlough O'Carolan Harper, composer and singer, Turlough O'Carolan was the last of the Irish Bards.

Whilst in his teens O'Carolan contracted small pox and became completely blind. However, his education and musical studies continued, fostered by Mrs. McDermott Roe, and at the age of 21 she provided him with a guide, a horse and money and thus his life as a wandering harper and subsequently composer began. His livelihood depended on the hospitality of the "big house" and notable among his patrons were the reynolds family of Leitrim, the Maguire's of Fermanagh, one of whom, Mary Maguire, he married, the McDermott's and the O'Connor's of Roscommon. It is as a composer that O'Carolan is best known. The "Bunting Collection" attributes over 40 songs and airs to O'Carolan, among them the popular O'Carolan's Concerto. Many of his works are of particular interest in that they reflect the fusion of major influences in his life. On the one

hand the Gaelic tradition and culture around which he was reared and on the other hand, the contemporary music of the day.

In 1738 having a premonition that his end was near, he returned to Alderford where his old patron still lived. On arrival he called for his harp, composed and played, perhaps his greatest piece "Farewell to Music". He died soon afterwards and was buried in the old 6th century Abbey of Kilronan just outside Keadue village.

He is the only Irish harper whose music has survived in any quantity with about two hundred pieces to his credit. His music has been the inspiration for countless musical compositions down through the years, including the American

National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner". Turlough O'Carolan, the last of the Irish Bards, was unquestionably one of Ireland's greatest musical geniuses.

Today the O'Carolan Heritage Park in Keadue commerates the life of the man and the O'Carolan Harp and Traditional Music Festival is held in Keadue on the first weekend of August every year which continues for one week celebrating Harp and Traditional Irish Music.

The summer school week precedes the festival weekend of the first weekend in August ( when a Bank Holiday falls on the first Monday of August in Ireland) His remains now lie at Kilronan Abbey, Keadue, County Roscommon.

The Joe Mooney 26th Annual Summer School welcome to the set dancing, tin whistle and bodhrán classes.

In addition to the classes and workshops there are recitals, ceilithe, lectures, and open air music events. The impromptu music sessions, the natural beauty of the Drumshanbo area and the traditional 'ceád míle fáilte' hospitality of County Leitrim provide an unforgettable week for all those who participate in the classes and also for those who just visit the town to be part of the experience.

Céad Míle Fáilte Drumshanbo is a small picturesque town situated in the very heart of County Leitrim, Ireland. The town takes its name from the Irish, Druim-Sean-Bhoth or "Ridge of the old huts".

The town is justly proud of its links with the past. The legends of the Tuatha de Danann recall the arrival of these magical people in a swirling mist on the nearby Sliabh an Iarainn mountain. They brought with them three musicians, Ceol, Binn and Téidbhinn - music, melody and harmony, whose legacy still remains.

Every July Drumshanbo plays host to the award winning Joe Mooney Summer School. This is a week long traditional festival of Irish music, song and dance named after the man who did so much to promote the cause of Leitrim and his beloved town.

The committee continue to emulate his high ideals, endeavouring to promote Leitrim's heritage of traditional music, while handing on the best traditions of the past to future generations.

Classes are open to people of all ages with some previous experience, although beginners are

Life through a lens T

hroughout the months of June and July, Ballina Arts Centre is hosting Hinterlands, an exhibition of photographic works by Belfast-based artist Liam Campbell. Catherine Gilmartin spoke to Liam about the show and his work in general.

Liam Campbell is an artist working in photography. His exhibition Hinterlands is currently showing at Ballina Arts Centre. The exhibition is a study of people in allotments and comprises portraits and studies of sheds. The works are beautiful compositions and show a way of life which many people are not even aware of.

After studying Photography at the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Liam went

on to complete his Masters Degree at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, 2007 in Art in the Contemporary World. Since then he has taught a number of photographic workshops based around the idea of ‘A Sense of Place’. He has an interest in alternative ways of living that revolve around ideas of food, and sees food as a social tool and a means and way of bringing people together. This has led him to work in the southern states of the USA, Norway, Finland, France, Israel, and recently Italy.

The works in Hinterlands offer a glimpse into the world of people who work in and love allotments. It is a community within a community and is filled with beautiful colours and textures, mixing landscape with an infrastructure of sheds and leantos. The portraits are beautiful studies of people who love the soil and love the idea of growing their own food.

Liam doesn’t have a preference

for either style of photograph. “I like them both”, he says. “You can’t have the one without the other. I think they are both part of the landscape. It was interesting for me the many conversations I had with the people about the allotments when I was taking the photographs. In the beginning people thought I was from the council, coming round to check up on them. Then they got to know me over time and they just let me get on with what I was doing. I would always return and give them copies of the photographs I took, sometimes getting some food to take home with me depending on the time of year.”

Liam has travelled extensively over the years and went on to say that he feels the work he has done abroad has impacted his work a great deal. “From travelling and working abroad you get to see and experience other cultures at first hand. How people live day to day, on Kibbutz in Israel you live, work, eat and socialise together. It is a community which supports itself.

Food is so much more than something that you put in your mouth, it acts as a social tool that brings people together. It is one of the things that unite people of all ages and classes. The need for food opens up so many other questions.

How to find a way of living and a job worth doing? One of the authors I liked in my early 20s was George Orwell and in particular his two books: The Road to Wigan Pier and Down and Out in Paris and London. In those books Orwell wanders and drifts from Paris to London and all over England, searching and observing, constructing a portrait of a time and place, searching for a way of living, during the 1930s.”

Liam believes that his involvement with a culture exchange programme in Norway called ATLANTIS along with his time working with Project 67 on Kibbutz in Israel contributed to his interest in alternative ways of living, which revolve around food and how it brings people together. He said: “It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life alongside working with PROJECT 67 on KIBBUTZ in Israel”.

Born in Bangor, Co. Down, Liam grew up a Catholic in a Protestant area during the 1970s and 80s. He takes up the story: “Both my

mother, who was from County Monaghan and my father who was from County Tyrone, were Catholics. They had moved to Bangor during the early 1960s before the outbreak of the Troubles in 1969. When I was 4 my family was forced out of our home by Loyalists not wanting Catholic families living in the area. We were then re-located to a new area which was safer and more mixed.

My friends growing up were both Protestant and Catholic, things would have been fairly normal with the occasional bomb going off on the main street every few years. In the summer there would be a subtle tension becoming more pronounced during the marching season in July. Growing up there I just wanted to escape and get out – it was quite suffocating. I do think the place and experience has influenced me. We have this kind of interior radar that everyone from Northern Ireland has of a

certain age, watching and listening, maybe that’s not a good thing, but it’s always there in the background”.

Liam likes to take on particular projects for his work, believing that “they make it easier to organise and make sense of. This is helpful when you send it to a curator and they want to know what it is about.”

He is currently working on a project about Rome’s best-known food market, Campo dei Fiori – which means ‘the field of flowers’.

If the resultant works are anything like the Hinterlands pieces, then they are definitely something to look forward to. In the meantime, people can check out the current works on show in Ballina Arts Centre where Hinterlands runs until 2nd August.

‘Musicians out of context’ @ The Hawkswell Theatre

Outdoor Sligo performance of Yeats’ On Baile's Strand

Artists: Heidi Wickham & Tom O'Rourke Exhibition ‘Musicians Out of Context’ explores the idea of taking musicians away from their normal habitat of the stage, theatre or bar and rethinking them in other locations. This collection plays on the idea that musicians making music can transform an environment just by the nature of their craft, and to that end, every location becomes their stage.Thurs 31 July – Mon 1 Sept

Saturday 12 July, 1pm – Cummeen Strand, Sligo Blue Raincoat Theatre Company are staging a one-off performance of On Baile's Strand by WB Yeats next weekend, which will be presented in the setting of Cummeen Strand with Knocknarea mountain as its backdrop.

This outdoor performance follows up on last year's breathtaking performance of Purgatory by WB Yeats, which took place on the summit of Knocknarea mountain and drew an audience of 300.

On Baile's Strand. a drama about the madness of Cuchulainn, was first seen at the Abbey Theatre in 1938. King Concobar, aware of Cuchulainn's bravery and his unruly temper, makes Cuchulainn swear an oath of obedience, forcing the unaware Cuchulainn to fight and kill his own son.

Regarded as one of Yeats’ most accessible and dramatic plays, this promises to be an exciting theatrical event.

Speaking about the production, Blue Raincoat director Niall Henry said, “Last year’s overwhelming response to our mountain top performance of Purgatory shows there’s a huge appetite out there for theatre set within the landscape and county that so inspired its author, WB Yeats. We are delighted to be staging this

dramatic, poetic piece of theatre ahead of next year’s 150th anniversary of WB Yeats’ birth, which will be celebrated in Sligo and worldwide.”

Directed by Niall Henry, the cast includes Ciaran McCauley, John Carty, Sandra OMalley, Barry Cullen, Bob Kelly and Brian Devaney with music by Joe Hunt.

On Baile’s Strand will be followed later in July by Sligo’s third annual Tread Softly Festival, which celebrates the link between the Yeats family and the northwestern town. Blue Raincoat will remount A Brief Taste of Lightning by Malcolm Hamilton during the Festival (28 July – 1 August). Also at Tread Softly, the company will launch a short film based on Hamilton’s Sanctuary.

Blue Raincoat Theatre Company are Ireland’s only full-time venue-based professional theatre ensemble. The company and performance space, The Factory, were founded in 1991. Blue Raincoat produce between four and six professional productions each year, with an emphasis on staging modern European classics, new writing and new adaptations for stage. The company employs a repertory system to tour each of these productions throughout Ireland and internationally.

uicing is nothing new but this new craze of super juicing and raw foodies has recently become increasingly popular. So what is juicing? In essence, Juicing is simply removing the juice from whole fruits and vegetables. The fibre is broken down in the fruit and vegetables ensuring that a rich supply of nutrients, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals are more easily absorbed by the body. Juicing can reduce your risk of cancer, boost your

immune system, remove toxins from the body, aids digestion and helps with weight loss.

Virtually every health authority recommends that we get 6-8 servings of vegetables and fruits per day and very few of us actually get that. Juicing is an easy way to guarantee that you will reach your daily target. Juicing provides versatility in fruit and vegetables because it helps people enjoy fruits and vegetables they might not usually enjoy in their whole form.

It can also balance the pH in our bodies, and in turn, help to protect us from conditions related to acidic imbalances, including heart and kidney disease and diabetes.

When starting out with juicing I would recommend a mid ranged

price juicer. Start by juicing vegetables and fruits you really enjoy. Juices should taste pleasant.

Be adventurous with flavour combinations. I do not recommend a juicing-only weight loss plan because the lack of fibre and protein in juices often leaves u feeling hungry.
