EOPLE in the Northwest have been hit hard by job losses, pay freezes, cuts in social welfare and tax hikes and as a result innumerable people are not able to afford private healthcare for this reason many are entitled to medical cards. This medical card is supposed to entitle the holder to free dental care, but due to changes imposed by the government in April of last year, this, in reality, is not the case.

Under the new measures introduced in 2010 the range of treatments available are being prioritised in accordance with how necessary they are deemed to be. These measures are intended to protect access to emergency dental care and safeguard services to children and special needs groups, according to the Department of Health and Children. What the measures have actually done, say the Irish Dentists Association (IDA) is to actively undermine the provision of care to those who can least afford it. According to the HSE Dental Treatment Service, since the restrictions have come in to place, people with a medical card are entitled to one oral examination, two fillings and no limit on extractions per year. This is supposedly the case but some dentists have their own limits. Continued on Page 2
