BALLYGLAS CREW MEET QUAY PIRATES: Some members of the RNLI (Ballyglass) Lifeboat Crew were interrupted in their manoeuvres last week by the Moy Pirates seeking to upstage plans for next week’s Quay Regatta Festival in Ballina. The three-day event is organised by the Moy Estuary Boat Club from 12th to 14th June in support of the Ballyglass Lifeboat Service. One of the highlights of the weekend will be the sailing of the stunning Galway hooker “MacDuagh” into the Moy Estuary. It is scheduled to cross “The Bar” close to Bartragh Island at 2.30 p.m. on Friday, to be met by a flotilla of boats from the Quay. The hooker will be manned by a crew from the famed “Northabout”, the first boat to navigate the north-west channel, skippered by Jarlath Cunnane (Knock).
ITH temperatures struggling to reach standards expected for June the north-west gets into festival mood with a plethora of local events commencing throughout the region . . . enough to satisfy locals and visitors in whatever town or village they find themselves. In Mayo, Ballina’s Quay Regatta Festival from 12th to 14th June kicks off the season with a celebration of all things waterrelated, including air shows, boat racing, fishing competitions, swimming and much more. Just a few weeks later, of course, Ballina Salmon Festival, now a premier festival event in the country, runs from July 8th – 12th (with pre-festival events). The highlight, of course, will be the now internationally renowned Heritage Day on 8thth July. Before this, however, the Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival provides a feast of traditional bluegrass, Newgrass, old-time, Cajun blue and folk music with artistes from home/abroad. It takes place from 12th to 14th June. On a different theme, Westport Sea Angling Festival (17th to 21st of June), is a prestigious event which now attracts anglers from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and The Netherlands. The Erris Beo Festival, from 18th to 21st June, highlights the unspoiled and unique aspects of this beautiful region, voted the best place in Ireland to go wild. Later, in July (25th) Scoil Acla Traditional Music and Cultural Summer School features a weeklong celebration of Irish music, language and culture. Continued on Page 2

Sligo’s RAI President Launches Kids’ Healthy Eating Campaign
R
estaurant Association of Ireland President and Sligo man, Anthony Gray is on a mission to get children eating healthier. He believes this starts early and restaurateurs have a responsibility to offer and encourage healthier options for
children’s menus. Anthony has launched a new children’s menu in both his Sligo-based restaurants, Eala Bhán in Sligo town and Tra Bán Restaurant in the popular family-holiday destination of Strandhill. He has also commissioned a leading children's dietician, Ruth Charles, to ensure key nutrients are being offered in the new kids menus. The new menu features something for even the pickiest of eaters. Ruth, who founded Nutrikids a consultancy for nutritional needs of infants, children and adolescents, said "When it comes to eating you may be surprised to learn that it is not instinctive. Children need to learn about food and develop eating skills by watching others
around them . When it comes to feeding your child well, the focus should be on nurturing their growth and development with locally sourced, in season, natural ingredients whenever possible. “At Tra Ban and Eala Bhan, Anthony has managed to do this, and, provide great value for money. It is so refreshing to see their focus on child sized portions for child sized tummies. Through the restaurant’s children offering, Anthony also rises to the challenge of providing some of the key nutrients required for child health but with a nice twist and a funky menu that will excite children. From their locally sourced salmon and fresh atlantic cod to cheeky strawberries and homemade
soup; there’s vegetarian options, Tubbercurry beef and Irish chicken breast on offer too and that’s just the kids menu. Tra Ban offers a family friendly eating environment with something for everyone and it won’t break the bank”. Anthony said, “Encouraging food education is an important aspect for my two year tenure as President of the RAI, as a restaurateur and as a father to two children. “We need to change the status quo of what children are offered to eat. Children may be more inclined to try something new while eating out, that they may refuse at home, our sweet potato fries for example”. To view full menus and for more information see www.TraBhanSligo.ie
North West is Getting Ready for Eircode
Eircode is the new postcode system for Ireland. Eircode will be launched in June 2015, a letter will be sent to all addresses notifying them of the Eircode which will be unique for that address. Your address does not change, you simply include the Eircode at the bottom of your address. There are many benefits to using Eircode, including making it quicker and easier for medical emergency services and others to locate addresses. It is safe to give an Eircode to anyone you would normally give your address to.
The Eircode Community Outreach Programme involves local organisations and volunteers helping reach out to various groups particularly older people living alone who may need further information on Eircode. The programme is committed to ensuring that the target group are reached through people that they already know and trust and are well-placed to advise them. An Eircode will be a seven character alpha-numeric code made up of two parts. The first
part (a Routing Key) consists of three characters and defines a general geographic location. The second part (a Unique Identifier) is unique to an address and distinguishes one address from another. A typical Eircode might read A65 F4E2. Key benefits Eircode will bring many benefits. In addition to the emergency services benefit, it will make it easier for delivery companies to identify addresses; it will make it easier to shop on-line, help people develop their businesses and
facilitate better planning and delivery of public services. Caroline Wilson, the Eircode Outreach Champion for County Mayo, is leading efforts across the county and would be delighted to hear from people who are interested in the programme for themselves, or who may help to identify people in their area who might need assistance. Caroline Wilson can be contacted at wcaroline79@gmail.com. Further general information on Eircode is available at www.eircode.ie
Festival time again in North West Continued from front page Many other events take place in Mayo, but it important not to forget the Walking Festivals – the Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail on 13th July and the Castlebar International Walking Festival from 2nd to 5th July. SLIGO: Though Sligo’s festival landscape will, undoubtedly, be dominated again this year by Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann from 9th-16th August, some regular festivals continue to delight through the county. There is also the 150th birthday celebrations for WB Yeats - From June 11th Sligo will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Nobel Prize-winning poet, William Butler Yeats on June 13th 1865. Yeats2015 presents a local, national and international series of exhibitions, performances, educational events, festivals, concerts, readings, talks and screenings. Cultural events centred on Sligo, Galway, Dublin, London
and in counties across Ireland are echoed in a diverse international programme. It will be rooted in Sligo, Yeats’ ‘spiritual home’ and include events to celebrate the creative legacy of his father John and his talented siblings Jack, Susan and Elizabeth. Through the prism of one of Ireland’s greatest artists, Yeats2015 marks a moment to celebrate and promote creativity in Ireland and elsewhere, and to reconsider the role of culture, community and the arts in the contemporary world. New Crowd-Funding Initiative McHale Motors Launched to Save the 25 Card Game Lisdovogue, Knockmore, Ballina Tel: Michael 094-9258194 / 087-2425238
A
crowd-funding campaign and initiative called Help Save 25, has just been launched by two Irish friends in a bid to revitalize the iconic Irish 25 Card Game. Sligo’s Rebecca Stevens (formerly of Sligo Chamber) and Westmeath-man Padraig Gorry
have joined forces in this unique initiative and aim to get 10,000 people committed to the 25 community. Played in pubs, kitchens and halls for years, the community of players is gradually dwindling. But the promoters believe that they can give the
game a new lease of life by: • Building an online version of the game • Providing a medium for players to learn and practice • Building an international community of online players “We truly believe that our online game and the community we hope to build is how we can help keep 25 alive”, states Padraig Gorry, Creator of Play25 Online. “That’s why we have launched Help Save 25 as a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo”. They have set themselves a target of 10,000 members before the end of the campaign this July, as they believe that this is the critical mass that is needed in order to put 25 back on the map. “We need people, lots of people. We are aiming to get 10,000 people committed to joining the 25 community, so that when you go online others will be there too”, continues Padraig. They hope to drum up interest and support, from those at home and abroad who play and want to play the game, as well as those who appreciate that 25 is rooted in Irish culture. Over time, it is hoped that the game’s target audiencewill include the wider gaming and card-playing market internationally, enabling the game to take its rightful place among the great card games of the world. “The more members we can encourage to be part of the world’s largest 25 community, the more we can
do with and for the game. We really believe we can bring Ireland’s national card game to an international level”, quotes Rebecca Stevens, Co-Founder of Play 25 Online. “As we develop our online product we want to offer regular competitions and introduce Inter-County and All Ireland Championships, and already have our sights set on hosting the inaugural 25 World Cup”. The Help Save 25 campaign is as much about giving the card game the recognition it deserves as a part of Irish culture, as it is about the underlying aspiration of taking the game to new heights. And, their ask is simple: go to the Help Save 25 Campaign page onwww.helpsave25.com and become a member for 10 euro for unlimited games until the end of 2016. This also gives access to private tables where friends or family members, no matter where they are on the globe, can play 25, interact and chat as if they were sitting around the same table. In the very least, they hope the campaign will bolster the existing 25 playing community, entice others to enjoy the game more often, introduce the game to the uninitiated, and most importantly, remind everyone that the game has been handed down over generations and is a part of Irish heritage. Wind and rain failed to dampen spirits at Knockmore 7-a-side

T
HE true spirit and love for Gaelic football was exhibited at Knockmore
on last Monday, June 1st, when twelve brave teams fought for glory in what could only be
described as monsoon-like conditions. The occasion was the inaugural 7-a-side tournament in honour of former Knockmore player, mentor and life-long supporter, Noel McHale, who died last year. It was a fitting tribute to Noel that so many teams and players from Mayo and Sligo braved such atrocious conditions to present a feast of football to their ardent followers, many of whom would probably have preferred to be on the pitch than get such a soaking on the sidelines. The victors, after many hours of competitive fare, were Tourlestrane (Sligo) who edged out Belmullet (Mayo) in a gripping encounter. Tourlestrane’s captain, Diarmuid Dunne, accepted the trophy the from Noel’s wife, Marcella McHale. Knockmore GAA Chairman Bernard
Cumiskey complimented all the teams who took part, their supporters, the referees, linesmen and all the members of the local club for their trojan efforts on the day, particularly those who catered for all with tea and sandwiches. He thanked the McHale family for presenting the magnificent trophy to the club and the sponsors, T-Rex (Castlebar) and Nippers (Ballina). The tournament is destined to become a major event in the local GAA calendar in the years ahead. Noel, who will be forever remembered for his vibrancy, enthusiasm and support for everything Knockmore, would be proud to experience the atmosphere of true sportsmanship and friendship exhibited by exponents of a game he certainly loved, particularly in such conditions.

First Ladies in Swinford to launch Console initiative
Ireland’s first lady Sabina Higgins with a tea cosy in the image of The President Michael D Higgins in Mayo to help launch the Cosy Up To Console national suicide awareness campaign. With her were Anne Lynch, Central Manager, Console Mayo and Paul Kelly, CEO, Console. National suicide prevention and bereavement charity Console is asking Ireland’s mammies, grannies, sisters and friends to get the nation talking over a cup of tea about issues surrounding suicide. Members of women’s organisations including the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, knitting groups and others are also being asked to knit a Console tea cosy to support the campaign. Photo by Keith Heneghan Photography, 087 6811228,
S
UICIDE awareness was high on the agenda for the wives of President Michael D. O’Higgins and An Taoiseach Enda Kenny when they joined forces in Swinford, Co. Mayo, last weekend (Friday, 29th May) to help launch the Cosy Up To Console national suicide awareness campaign. National suicide prevention and bereavement charity Console is asking Ireland’s mammies, grannies, sisters and friends to get the nation talking over a cup of tea about issues surrounding suicide. Members of women’s organisations including the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, knitting groups and others are also being asked to knit a Console tea cosy to support the
campaign. The Cosy Up To Console campaign was officially launched by Sabina Higgins at the Cultural Centre in Swinford, County Mayo. At the event she encouraged the women of Ireland to support Console’s efforts. “Life is our most precious possession and privilege and death our greatest fear and dread. Console’s work shines a light of hope for those who are struggling with darkness and sadness,” said Mrs Higgins. The Taoiseach’s wife also added her voice to the call. “I am very happy to support this initiative by Console who do fantastic work in the area of suicide prevention and support for people in distress,” said
Fionnula Kenny. “Sadly suicide has touched the lives of too many of our people but hope and help are always available at Console and who better to make sure that message is heard in homes and workplaces around the country than the women of Ireland?” said Console CEO Paul Kelly. President Higgins is patron of the national suicide prevention charity. “The President and Mrs Higgins have shown great feeling and understanding for the work we do and I would like to thank them for their unfailing and very generous support,” said Console’s Paul Kelly. The campaign is the brainchild of psychotherapist Anne Lynch, manager of the Console Centre in Swinford,
County Mayo. “We have got to get people talking about suicide and what can be done to help those who may be in crisis, a chat over a cuppa is a good way to start that conversation” said Anne.“The nation needs to know that Console’s trained counsellors are always available 24/7 and they are only a phone call away on 1800 247 247.” A keen knitter Anne decided it might be an idea to combine the cuppa with a good knit and natter session. Local ICA and knitting groups in Mayo responded so enthusiastically to her request to knit tea cosies for Console that the organisation has decided to spread the appeal nationwide. “We are asking people across the country to get chatting and knitting tea cosies over the next few months. “The plan is to sell Console tea cosies as gifts for Christmas. Not only will they raise funds for the organisation they will also raise awareness as they will get people talking,” said Anne. Nationwide professional suicide prevention and bereavement charity Console offers counselling services and 24-hour helpline support to people in crisis and those bereaved by suicide. The charity has full-time counselling centres in Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Wexford, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Athlone and Mayo. Console also offers liaison services in counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Tipperary and Clare. Counselling, advice and general support is available for any individual, couples, groups, families or children who have been affected by suicide. Console can be reached at any time on freephone 1800 247 247 and many resources and useful information can be found at www.console.ie.

plans to turn his attention to another class of BIM boats – 26-footers – of which in excess of 100 were built at BIM Yards and issued to fishermen during the 1950s and 60s. At least 50 of those boats found first homeports on the Mayo and Sligo coasts. The system of boat naming used by BIM in the vast majority of cases was that of Irish place names beginning with Cill or Loch (e.g. Cill Airne or Loch Corrib). As with the 50 and 56-footers, if the impact made by the introduction of those boats to
the Irish fishing scene is to be recorded, your help is essential in ways of ownership, registration, associated anecdotes, and indeed any relevant details whatsoever. Pat is seeking help to preserve the existence of the boats! It would be a travesty to allow the importance of the iconic BIM 26-footers to fade into oblivion, he says. If anybody can help Pat they can make initial contact at 04820762382 or e-mail patnolan1@hotmail.com

Mayo sings in fine tune during the fourth Mayo International Choral Festival
The Nebraska Wesleyan University Choir, USA, performing guests at the Gala Choral Concert and who also performed with the 30-piece Nebraska Wesleyan University Symphonic Band at the concluding concert in Westport, during the Mayo International Choral Festival, 2015. Pic Alison Laredo
T
he fourth Mayo International Choral Festival came to a most successful close on Sunday, May 24th after four days of concerts, competitions and choral capers! The people of Mayo welcomed 37 competing and non-competing choirs to the county in what proved to be a celebration of song and music. The standard of choral singing enjoyed by audiences at the community concerts in Ballina, Ballintubber, Castlebar, Crossmolina, Newport, Swinford and Westport was second to none. Locals enjoyed many choirs singing around Castlebar on The Songway Choral Trail which brings the festival out into the community. The standard of the winning choirs at the competitions on Saturday resulted in eight exceptional choirs competing against each other in the stunning Gala Concert on Saturday night in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, during which the premier choir of the festival was crowned – Laetare Vocal Ensemble, directed by Roisin Blunnie. The night was compèred by Tommy Marren and the hightly
talented Nebraska Wesleyan University Choir from the USA, under the direction of Dr. William A Wyman, gave a guest performance, as did Tenor Sean Costello. Other highlights included a gathering of all the
Barbershop chorus groups after the competition to sing as one giant barbershop group, and of course the now annual dawn chorus on Sunday morning at 8am on the shores of Lough Lannagh, which was led by Mezzo Soprano Anne
Marie Gibbons, and well supported by a cheery if not sleepy group made up of members of the public and participating choir members. It is estimated that the festival, supported by Mayo County Council and Failte Ireland, has brought an even greater economic benefit to Mayo than last year, which saw 1495 bednights in Mayo, realising just over a quarter of a million euro after costs to the local economy. Many local business owners expressed their support, citing a noted increase in sales, particularly in the hospitality sectors. Feedback from participating choirs, the highly esteemed international and national adjudicators and audience members has been overwhelmingly positive and the committee are already focusing on next year’s festival, with some choirs having booked accommodation right up to 2019! The fifth Mayo International Choral Festival will take place all over Mayo from May 26h - 29th 2016. Don’t miss it! For further details, log onto www.mayochoral.com or facebook.com/mayochoral

New programme in Disability Equality Studies In partnership with The Disability Equality Specialist Support Agency (DESSA), St. Angela’s College have developed an exciting new part-time/online programme titled a BA (Disability Equality Studies), which is open to disabled people, those who work for, or live with disabled people and those who currently work or have a strong desire to work in the Disability Sector. This new programme will allow students to understand disability in a different way; not as a health issue or something to be “cured”, nor as something to arouse sympathy, but as a political and social issue. The study of ‘disability’ is inextricably linked to the concept of equality in today’s society. We envisage students and graduates of this programme addressing the issues surrounding equal rights for disabled people in all spheres of Irish life. Figures from the Central Statistics Office indicate that 600,000 people in Ireland have a disability, that’s over 13% of the population. As a country, we need to continue to address the poorer outcomes in education, employment and income for this group, that come about, not because of any impairment or condition they may have, but because 21st century Irish society is full of barriers which impede
the progress of these citizens. “DESSA, along with St. Angela’s College, will work together for a social inclusion model where we see disability as a social and political issue as opposed to a medical issue” explains Jacqui Brown, Chairperson, DESSA. She continues “the jobs that would come from this programme would be multifaceted, from hands on in the disability sector to policy and admin levels within local and national organisations”. This is not the first programme St. Angela’s College have developed in disability studies. In 2011, the College launched the first, social-model led, level 8 programme, titled a BA (Health and Disability Studies). “This full-time programme continues to gain interest and we had our first graduates leave us last November” explains Susan Carton, Programme Director for both BA programmes. “We are also delighted to report that they have since gained employment/further training in the disability sector”. For more information on the BA (Disability Equality Studies), contact Susan Carton on 071-9135620 or email scarton@stangelas.nuigalway.ie

Police called over ‘armed mob’ (who turned out to be asparagus pickers)
Police descended on an ‘armed mob’ they thought were terrorising the countryside recently, only to find they were a group of harmless asparagus pickers. Locals in Ludwigslust, a rural area in northeaster Germany reported seeing a group of men armed with knives and sticks prowling the fields nearby. Within minutes six police cars arrived, preparing for a violent scene, however they discovered the ‘mob’ were a group of workers heading up the road to take their lunch break. Police quickly realised the mistake and allowed the group, which contained ’10 to 16 people’, to continue on their way. White asparagus is a popular delicacy in Germany and a ubiquitous sight on restaurant menus in late spring.
Homeless people to be fined up to £1,000 for sleeping rough Homeless people could be fined up to £1,000 for sleeping in doorways near popular tourist spots, under new rules launched by a London council. It’s not clear how destitute rough sleepers are expected to pay. Hackney Council’s Public Space Protection Order bans sleeping in public places – offenders are handed a £100 fixed penalty, which can rise to £1,000 in court. Homelessness charities have condemned the move, saying that it turns rough sleepers – who are often escaping lives of abuse – into criminals. A similar protection order was proposed by Oxford City Council, but the council backed off after a petition against the move garnered 72,000 signatures. Matt Downie of homelessness charity Crisis said, ‘Rough sleepers deserve better than to be treated as a nuisance – they may have suffered a relationship breakdown, a bereavement or domestic abuse. ‘Those who sleep on the streets are extremely vulnerable and often do not know where to turn for help. ‘These individuals need additional support to leave homelessness behind, and any move to criminalise sleeping rough could simply create additional problems to be overcome.

A man thought he’d won £25 in the lottery. He’d won £13.5million
If there’s something better than finding out you’ve won £25 it’s finding out you’ve won £13.5million. That was the case for 67-year-old Peter Congdon, who matched all six numbers in last Wednesday’s Lotto Quadruple Rollover to take the £13,538,113 jackpot. Mr. Congdon, a widower, said he was told by three separate people that he would be lucky on the day on the day of the draw, having also won small amounts on National Lottery Scratchcards for three days prior. I had two more very similar comments that afternoon and they were right – it was definitely my lucky day,’ he said. ‘I thought I might have won £25. Then I realised I’d matched six numbers and there was only one jackpot winner so I ran straight down to my daughter’s house and asked her to double-check.’ When Mr. Congdon’s daughter confirmed that he had won the jackpot, he responded in truly British fashion: he made himself a cup of tea. The Truro City councillor, who runs bingo in the community centre three times a week and helps out with family services, plans to buy himself a Land Rover Discovery Sport and take his three children, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild on holiday to Butlins. Mr. Congdon regularly plays Lotto and always uses the same numbers: 12, 27, 28, 39, 41 and 48.
Learner driver goes out for a spin and gets flattened by a tank
Nowhere during the driving test is there a section which requires you to ‘avoid a tank’. However this learner driver could have done with that expertise after the front of her car was flattened by the monstrous machine yesterday. The tank made short work of the 18-yearold’s Toyota hatchback after she accidentally pulled out in front of the column of British military vehicles in the German town of Augustdorf. The Challenger 2 tank’s driver wasn’t able to stop the 62-tonne beast in time, however everyone in the car managed to escape unharmed. While the car received about €12,000 (£8,600) worth of damage, the tank was completely unscathed. Obviously.

The Matchmaker @ THE HAWKSWELL THEATRE Thurs 25 June, 8pm • €20/18 conc. The Matchmaker is based on the novella “Letters of a County Matchmaker” by John B Keane, one of Ireland’s most celebrated writers. This production stars television favorite Mary McEvoy known for her roles as Biddie in the long running RTE series Glenroe and Irish Actor and comedian Jon Kenny who was half of the Irish comic duo d’Unbelievables alongside Pat Shortt. Kenny is also best known outside Ireland for appearing in the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted. Together they play a myriad of characters in this hilarious and earthy dramatic comedy. Using his inimitable way with words and his one sense of “devilment” and wit, Keane delves into the longings, hungers, fears and foibles of this collection of lonely county people and creates a marvelously colorful world, taking us back to a simpler time, when phones were few and far between and the only web was one left behind by spiders. Directed by Michael Scott *Concession prices not shown above are available from our Box Office in person or at 071-9161518 A rate of €15 is available for groups of 10 or more.

Step back in time as The Model recreates the heady and mysterious atmosphere of a traditional Candlelight Salon to mark Yeats Day. The special night at The Model in Sligo on Friday, June 12 will include discussions of W.B. Yeats, his work and his fascination with the occult. In the late Victorian age, ‘salons’ were a popular form of entertainment featuring music and conversation. The Model, one of Ireland’s leading arts centres, will recreate this tradition, presenting a magical evening including experts on Yeats, the occult and the arts. Guests include Prof Margaret Harper, Mark Patrick Hederman, Susan Hiller, Eimear MacBride and Vincent Woods. Music and song will be performed by Emer Mayock and Mary McPartlan. Limited spaces are available for this event. Also on June 12, The Model is launching Psychic Lighthouse, an exhibition featuring the work of a number of contemporary artists who investigate ritual, spiritualism and occult practices. The exhibition, curated by Emer McGarry, will include work by Irish artists including Clodagh Emoe, Deirdre McKenna, Susan MacWilliam and Stephen Rennicks as well as international artists Joachim Koester (Denmark), Maria Loboda (Poland) and Goshka Macuga (Poland). Entry is free. Psychic Lighthouse will run from June 13 to August 30. Also on June 12, The Model will launch Entwined Memories, an exhibition of contemporary Irish textiles. Work in this exhibition - which is in celebration of the Year of Design (2015) and the Lily Lolly Craftfest - is made in response to memories, threads and stories of life. Entwined Memories is the fifth annual exhibition curated and toured by the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland in conjunction with member organisations, Guilds Associations Networks and Societies. Entry is free. Entwined Memories will run from June 13 to July 12.
Silent Moves gets Ignite Touring Award
Silent Moves by Aideen Barry and the artists of Western Care’s Ridgepool Training Centre, Scannán Technologies, and presented by Ballina Arts Centre, has been awarded a touring award from Ignite. Silent Moves will tour to Town Hall Theatre, Galway, Triskel Arts Centre, Cork (as part of Cork Film Festival) and the Irish Film Institute, Dublin in autumn of this year. Inspired by the classic black and white silent films of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, Silent Moves is a 28 minute silent film, with a strong emphasis on movement and mime. Using stopmotion animation techniques and slapstick motifs, the film has a unique aesthetic and is accompanied by an inspired live soundtrack. Visual artist Aideen Barry collaborated with a group of 23 artists with disabilities from two Western Care projects based in Ballina – the Ridgepool Training Centre and Scannán Technologies. Working alongside Aideen was renowned Dancer and Choreographer, Emma O’Kane. Shot on location in Ballina, the film carries a strong message about attitudes towards disability while being funny, moving and beautiful to watch. The film was launched last November at Ballina Arts Centre in front of a huge audience, and was shown a number of times during February of this year. Screenings of the film on the tour will be accompanied by musicians performing the soundtrack on piano, violin, viola and percussion. In each location there will be two screenings: a matinee targeted at schools and community groups and an evening show open to the general public. As an integral part of the tour, in each location a ‘Meet the Makers’ style session will be hosted, featuring some of the participating artists from the project, alongside representatives from Ballina Arts Centre and Mayo County Council Arts office – who will introduce the screening and talk about their Ignite experiences. Sean Walsh, Director of Ballina Arts Centre, said: “We were absolutely delighted when we got word that the funding application was successful. The film is a magical piece of work, and it certainly deserves to be seen around the country. I’m thrilled for the makers of the film, and the way the tour is set up, they will have a chance to go with the film and present their work to audiences across the country.” Silent Moves was commissioned by Mayo County Council as part of Ignite. Ignite is managed by a unique partnership involving the Arts Council, Arts & Disability Ireland (ADI), Cork City Council, Galway City and County Councils, and Mayo County Council. Ignite is a new platform designed to generate Ireland’s most ambitious showcasing of talent from people with disabilities, led by international and Irish artists and performers with disabilities, with projects taking place in 2014 and 2015 in Cork, Galway and Mayo. These commissions each represented an investment of up to €60,000. This Silent Moves tour will mark the conclusion of this initiative in November 2015. Have a Heart With Seamus Moran This unique one-man play, written and performed by Seamus Moran, and directed by Liam Halligan, comes to the Arts Centre on 12th June (Many may remember Liam from his performances in Fair City some years ago). A man who recently had a heart transplant thinks that his new heart is talking to him. Is he going insane, suffering side-effects from the medication, or could it be possible? Could this really be happening? His new heart persuades him to embark on a path which turns his world upside down, causing him to question previous assumptions. It is a wonderfully dynamic and visual piece of theatre about love, obsession and head versus heart. Structured like a detective story it is guaranteed to keep audiences guessing ‘til the end.

P
aul Bourke is a proud Ballina family man, with three children ranging from ten to four years of age. This hardworking 37 year old is the manager of Toymaster in Ballina, and he has always supported Ballina Salmon Festival. Whilst still a teenager he started helping out as a festival steward and has been a Committee member himself for several years. Catherine Gilmartin talks to Paul, who is now Chairman of Ballina Salmon Festival, about what inspired him to get involved and what is in store for us at this year’s festival. Paul grew up in Ballina town surrounded by a close family. He says: “As a child my brothers and I really looked forward to Ballina Salmon Festival and from as early as I can remember, we would play tug-o’-war at the Canal Side and five-a-side soccer in Penneys car park, or the Quinnsworth car park as it was known then. Also I have very fond memories of the fantastic pageants held on the river bank and the great excitement that the steam engines created on Pearse Street the night before Heritage Day. It was known as the Steam Up”. We are expecting big crowds this year especially as we have such an exciting programme of events to offer visitors and towns people alike and also because of the sterling being so strong we expect big crowds from the North of Ireland and abroad. |The Festival started off in 1964 when local businessmen and councillors got together with a view to promoting the famous River Moy and also to entice visitors to the town. There has been a long- standing relationship with Northern Ireland & U.K. visitors coming to Ballina annually for fishing, shooting and to visit family and friends in the Ballina area. With this in mind the businessmen along with local councillors put together the festival idea and from the outset it was a huge success. The festival was called “The Moy Salmon Festival” and attracted many visitors and celebrities to the town. Many of the older generation will recall famous soccer player Sir Bobby Charlton and Gay Byrne in particular. For a brief few years it was renamed The Ballina Street & Arts Festival but it has happily reverted back to the original in recent years, focusing again on the famous waters and the World
renowned local Salmon that the town is famous for. Back in the ‘60’s the River Moy salmon was a highlight of the festival, so much so that throngs of people gathered outside the Cathedral after the opening ceremony for a free punnet of salmon, washed down with a free bottle of Guinness. The youngsters got a Ruddy’s or BMW mineral which was a great treat in those days. Unfortunately many of the river events that were so popular in days gone by are no longer feasible due to insurance constraints. The hugely popular Heritage Day, or Lá Oidreachta as it’s known in Irish, takes place on Wednesday 8th July and is an event created by the festival committee of 1992, headed up by Adrian Bourke, Billy Summerville (RIP) & Regina Melvin among others. It became one of the most spectacular events any festival has seen in the country. Each year it attracts thousands and thousands of visitors on to the streets of Ballina which are transformed back in time to relive the Heritage and traditions of days of long ago. Paul Bourke says: “This year will be no exception and I am encouraging everybody to dress up and embrace their culture and tradition and to get involved in any small way possible to add colour and excitement to the occasion. Heritage Day centres on displays of our cultural Heritage by showcasing from years bygone but not forgotten! This year we are having a selection of games for kids on Walsh Street. “We are also running the Heritage Day Gathering to bring more of our friends and family home for a fun-filled day of Irish culture, craft and food. Ireland as a nation is famous for our handcrafted trades, products, traditional food & music that is never forgotten by those living far from our shore and the Heritage Day Gathering is intended to bring closer those returning home and those who never left in a lively, fun & festive atmosphere”. There is a wide and varied offering of events again this year and Paul and his committee have been working around the clock in order to put together a comprehensive programme to suit both young and old. Already there have been rave reviews about the first fundraising event for the Ballina Salmon Festival. A brainwave by Liam Brennan who, along with the festival organisers,
brought together the famous Jack Ruane Showband with the two survivors of the Miami Showband, at Ballina Arts Centre in March. It was a huge success and set a high standard for the rest of the festival events to follow. Paul went on to say: “Liam put in a huge effort and deserves all the credit”. This year sees the introduction of a shortened, but action-packed, schedule over 5 days. Paul explains: “We want more quality and a jam packed event programme to suit all tastes and to leave people with lasting memories”. Paul continues: “The events programme is really taking shape, with events like International Night on Friday the 10th of July, which is a personal favourite of mine. Local Musician Gerry Guthrie will surely entertain at the Country and Western Night on Thursday the 9th.” Beyond the Barricade, the massively acclaimed production, directed by Lavinia Gilmartin, is back again at the Ballina Arts Centre due to overwhelming demand. The show is on Monday, 5th and Tuesday, 6th July, and booking is strongly advised as this is a guaranteed sell out. Saturday the 11th will see the return of the ever spectacular Mardi Gras & Fireworks display through the streets of Ballina and reaching down along the Banks of the River Moy. Paul also wants to emphasise the importance of volunteers to come forward and help in any way possible. “The festival is a voluntary organisation and it relies on the goodwill of the town folk and its business community. After all this festival is by the people of Ballina for the people of Ballina - so every help and assistance is very much appreciated no matter how small. We welcome individuals to offer their time in stewarding and to help in event management with any of the events being run this year”. To conclude, Paul wishes to thank Padraic Moore, the former Chairperson of the Ballina Salmon Festival, for his ongoing encouragement, advice and support which is invaluable and much appreciated. For further information about the Ballina salmon Festival, please call the festival Office, located at the SMA Arcade on O’Rahilly Street, telephone: 096 79814 or visit the website www.ballinasalmonfestival.ie or Facebook page www.facebook.com/ballinasalmonfest ival.mayo.

CONNACHT SFC PREVIEW
By Cóilín Duffy
T
HE World will be watching as four teams remain in the Connacht Senior Football Championship, as the battle to see who will lift the Nestor Cup in 2015 heats up. The Exiles of New York and London have both been put to the sword, with Leitrim also making their exit from the competition, to leave us with Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo, who will face-off in the semi-finals. Each of the remaining counties have claimed provincial honours since 2007, and indeed between 2007 and 2010, Sligo (07'), Galway (08’), Mayo (09’) and Roscommon (10’) each took a title, before Mayo took four-in-a-row successes, and they will be aiming to make it the magic FIVE-in-arow this Summer - feat that hasn’t been done since the 1950’s/60’s when Galway managed it between 1956-1960; a feat only once previously achieved, that by Mayo from 1948-1951. The Connacht Senior Football Championship began this year, as is now customary at Gaelic Park in the Bronx in New York, with 2015 the turn of Galway to pay their New York cousins a visit. While the Tribesmen claimed a comfortable win in the end, the
event as Connacht GAA Chairman Tom Rock stated is ‘far more than just about the result’. “It’s not alone the Connacht Championship, but the start of the All-Ireland Series, and what better way could we have it, than our International trip to New York,” he said. “It starts off our Connacht Championship annually, we lay great store by it, and Connacht gives real expression to the International dimension of our Gaelic Games. It’s no lip-service. “Counties in Connacht are preparation to put their own aspirations on the line, come out to New York and they do so because it is very important to us. The contribution of New York and not only to Gaelic Games, but looking after our diaspora. “We really appreciate that and we want to show it in a tangible way, by welcoming them with open arms into our Championship. “To some extent the game is secondary to the events of the weekend. Connacht counties in their turn come out here once every five years. It’s a big financial commitment, but the rewards are really great. “When people review the Championship in terms of results, I think they overlook something

very important and that is what the weekend in New York symbolises." Both the RTÉ and Sky cameras will be hitting the province in the coming weeks, with live coverage of Galway v Mayo on June 14th from Pearse Stadium at 4pm on RTÉ; before it’s a Saturday evening clash on June 20th as Sligo host Roscommon, Live on Sky

hey may be underdogs to lift the Connacht Senior Football title this Summer, but Sligo are always capable of springing a surprise or two in the Championship, and expect the Yeats County to provide another shock in 2015. Little was expected outside of Sligo in 2007, when they bridged a famine stretching back to 1975, to take the Nestor Cup for only the third time. Since then there have been wins in the Championship over London, Mayo, Galway and New York, but losses have also come against Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim, London and Galway. Sligo came within touching distance of claiming a rare piece of silverware in 2010, after a onepoint loss to Roscommon in the Connacht Final; and also reached the 2012 decider, where a two-
Sports at 7pm. The Connacht Championships are something special. Over 66 thousand spectators watched on over the course of the Senior Championship in 2014, and there’s every indication that figure can be surpassed this Summer. Add in the Minor Football Championship which begins on June 27th between Leitrim and Sligo, with the winners taking on Roscommon;
point loss to Mayo was their lot. Is 2015 the time for Sligo to once again reach a Connacht showpiece final? Since beating Galway by 2-14 to 015 in the 2012 semi-final, Sligo have lost to London and Galway in the Connacht SFC, and have failed to record a win. This year Sligo finished fourth in a tough Division 3 of the Allianz League, behind Fermanagh, Armagh and Tipperary - with all three having strong aspirations of lifting provincial silverware this Summer. Sligo have the players to perform on the big stage, and have already showed that with players such as Luke Bree, David Kelly and Niall Murphy picking up Sigerson Cup medals with DCU in recent years. St Mary’s clubman Mark Breheny is now 34, but he continues to impress, and indeed is a man who also has a Sigerson Cup medals in

and Mayo facing Galway in the other semi-final - there’s no doubt a football feast ahead between now and the end of July. Two Hurling titles are also up for grabs as Roscommon face Mayo in the Intermediate Final, and Leitrim take on Sligo in the Connacht Junior decider - just a fortnight after Roscommon and Sligo contested National finals in Croke Park. the bag, and was on the Connacht team which claimed a rare Railway Cup title in 2014. Breheny is extremely proud to be captain of his county this year. “It’s certainly given me a bit of a lift anyway, you get that extra responsibility as well and it has been a huge pleasure really. “I’ve really taken to it, and I am enjoying it every game. Maybe I’m always trying to do that extra bit on the field and as captain now, so maybe my performances have reflected in that. “I’m trying to lead the team more and produce better performances because I am captain. That extra bit of pressure has probably helped me within my game and just getting the scores in vital games.” Will Breheny captain Sligo to their fourth Connacht Senior title this Summer? It’s certainly within his sides grasp.

GALWAY
It hasn’t been the same for Galway since they last lifted the Nestor Cup in 2008, with a string of hard-luck stories and some heavy defeats in the Connacht Senior Football Championship. A one point win over Mayo on that July Sunday in Elvery’s MacHale Park, Mayo reversed the fortunes in the 2009 Connacht decider, and haven’t looked back since. 2010 brought a draw with Sligo, before a one-point loss in the replay, while a six-point loss in 2011 to Mayo; a five-point loss to Sligo in 2012; a 17-point defeat against Mayo in 2013 and a seven-point loss to Mayo in last year’s provincial final, have been Galway’s Connacht exit stories in the intervening years. At underage level there has been great promise , while last year Galway exited the All-Ireland series after a stiff test against eventual winners Kerry in the AllIreland quarter-final by 1-20 to 210 at Croke Park. Galway have already twice dipped their toe in the 2015 Connacht SFC, with Shane Walsh (1-4) and Damien Comer (1-4) among those impressive in their 2-18 to 0-8 win over New York, while Leitrim were also comfortable accounted for by 1-13 to 0-8 in the quarter-final. It’s this game-time which will stand to the Tribesmen ahead of their semi-final against a Mayo side who are coming in cold, and haven’t had a competitive game
since their 0-12 to 1-9 draw against Donegal on April 5th over two-months without competitive action, save for a few challenge matches and club action. St James clubman Paul Conroy returns as Galway captain this year, and although one of his sides more experienced players at this stage, he too can call on a
glittering underage career, which included captaining Galway Minors to All-Ireland glory over Derry in 2007. With Corofin’s All-Ireland winners also making an impact, this is one of the strongest Galway panels in recent years. And one of that crew is eagerly anticipating a date with Mayo.
“It’s good to win championship games and we have two wins in the bag now,” Gary Sice said. "We saw them as tricky assignments and they could have gone a lot worse than they did for us, so we are just glad to have the wins. “A few lads have more championship games under their belts and we can focus the mind
now. “We have a few things to sort with Mayo. It’s been a while since we turned them over, so that’ll be a good day and I’m looking forward to it.” Is 2015 the time for Galway’s young guns to shine? Only time will tell, but they certainly have a huge wealth of talent at their disposal.
ROSCOMMON Roscommon are in many peoples minds the team to watch in Championship 2015. John Evans charges have made the meteoric rise up the Allianz Football League ranks, and from Division 4 a couple of seasons ago, the recently crowned Divi-
sion 2 champions will take their place among the kingpins of Gaelic Football in the top-flight in 2016. In truth it’s no surprise that the Rossies are making great progress, given their strong performances at Under 21 and Minor
levels on the All-Ireland stage in recent years, but can the side captained by Padraig Pearses clubman Niall Carty make a big breakthrough in the Summer of 2015? All the signs would point to Roscommon getting back to Con-
nacht Final, when the Nestor Cup is up for grabs on Sunday July 19th. Roscommon lost to Mayo by just a point in the 2014 Connacht semi-final, and will be eager to get back on the winners rostrum for the first time since 2010, but
Sligo will need to be despatched first. Ultan Harney faces a race for fitness for this match, and featured as a scoring substitute in the win over London in Ruislip recently. The Clann na nGael player was suffering from concussion after the game and went for an X-Ray the following day to see if there was any damage done to his cheekbone. It’s a panel effort which can push teams over the line in the Championship, and the Rossie’s will certainly use their squad to the max if they are to win Connacht SFC title number 21 this July. Evans knows a potential banana skin awaits in Markievicz Park on June 20th. “We know full well it was a difficult last few weeks. We had county championship football and the rest and trying to get ourselves right after winning Division 2,” he said. “We had to try and get the handle on the right frame of mind. It was difficult but we’re certainly there now. “We know we’re in for a tough, tough game in Sligo in Markievicz Park. It’s going to be a cauldron and it’s going to be one hell of a game.” Time will tell, but momentum is on his side, and the Rossies are certainly on a march.

MAYO has the momentum at that level. And we’ve seen Roscommon after winning Division 2, carrying huge impetus at the moment, so it’s going to be a really tough Connacht championship. On their day, any team could win it.” And Connelly is right to be concerned about the growth of Galway and Roscommon at underage level, although at Senior it’s Mayo that continue to lead the charge. Mayo haven’t lost a game in the West since their 0-15
Aiming to become only the third team in history to claim five-in-a-row of Connacht Senior Football titles, undoubtedly Mayo are once again favourites to lift the Nestor Cup this Summer. Mayo pushed eventual AllIreland winners Kerry all the way last Summer, with a 1-16 apiece draw at the AllIreland semi-final stage in Croke Park, before losing
out by just three points, after a cracking encounter in Limerick, which needed extra-time before Kerry prevailed by 3-16 to 3-13. The same, and a little bit more would satisfy Mayo supporters this Summer. Mayo have easily been one of the most consistent teams nationally in recent years, and while only a fool would bet against their
2015 exploits finishing before August - it’s a Sam Maguire success that they really crave. Since James Horan’s tenure as Mayo manager came to an end, Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly have taken charge - Horan’s boots have certainly been tough to fill, and Connelly knows that there’s nothing
to 1-8 loss to Sligo in the opening round in 2010, while one must go back to 2008 for Mayo’s last Championship loss to Galway, a 212 to 1-14 Connacht final defeat to the Tribesmen at MacHale Park - Galway’s last provincial crown. With players such as Cillian O’Connor making a return to the fold, with the Ballintubber clubman on track for a return next Sunday, after a knee injury - it looks favourable for Mayo to book their place in a fifth final in a row.
easy ahead in the murky waters of the Connacht SFC. Connelly said, “I do realise Roscommon and Galway have been improving very well over the last four years; they’ve won all the previous 4 or 5 Under 21 Connacht championships and Mayo haven’t won it since 2009. “Everybody knows who

Five reasons most diets fail W
e’ve all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It’s frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure. But it doesn’t have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an American based obesity expert and the author of The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work. “If there was a quick fix we’d all be skinny,” he points out. “The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be.” So what’s preventing us from getting there?
1. We think dieting has to be painful
2.We under-eat
“The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about suffering,” says Dr. Freedhoff. “It suggests that people struggling with their weight don’t deserve to eat like normal people or use food for comfort and celebration. Instead they’re only supposed to use food for fuel and shut off the other normal uses. This doesn’t work.”
Trying to starve yourself into thinness doesn’t work either. “Hunger is a very powerful physiological force,” says the diet doctor. “It’s second only to breathing for survival. To think we can fight 100 million years of evolution which has made our bodies really good at securing calories simply because we want to get into a particular clothing size is folly.”
4.We eat out too often and consume too much processed food
3. We over-exercise “People undertake exercise regimes that are truly ‘regimes’,” he says. “People see these shows on TV where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it’s a life sentence.” People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they’re burning, which can lead to frustration. “As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly,” he says. “That’s why gyms are busy in January and empty in March.”
“We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day.”
5. We don’t think about the calories we’re drinking “People are usually aware that sugarsweetened beverages can be problematic but they don’t always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee,” he says. “And people really don’t like to think about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that’s something you can’t ignore if you’re trying to lose weight.”Best advice he can offer? “Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy — and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you’ve got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.”
