Sligo, Derry & Knock route aid chopped; Donegal survives! FINANCIAL assistance to encourage airlines to fly from Dublin to regional airports in Galway, Knock, Sligo and Derry are to be axed from July 2011, but the Donegal – Dublin route has been saved from the same measures – for now! The shock decision was made following a review of regional airport expenditure, with Transport Minister Noel Dempsey indicating that the Public Service Obligation routes will only remain on Dublin-Kerry and Dublin-Donegal routes. Many who are waiting to get paid at the end of the month are in for a nasty shock. After a grim January for many, there won’t be much relief. While budget 2011 abolished the health levy and income levy they have been replaced by a new Universal Social Charge. All workers are required to pay this tax if their annual income is more than €4004 euro, or €77 a week, meaning it applies to nearly all workers. For people with income of €4005 or more the rates will be two per cent on all income up to €10,036, four per cent on earnings between €10,037 and €16,016 and seven per cent on any income over €16,016. So someone earning €25,000 will be charged two per cent on the first €10,036 , then four per cent on the next €5,980 and seven per cent on the rest, making a total of €1,069 on top of PAYE and PRSI. For the over 70s with a medical card the universal social charge will now apply, where they were exempt from the health and income levy. Individuals dependent on social welfare payments will see a cut of four per cent and for all parents there is a cut in child benefit payments; all this coupled with an increase in petrol and diesel prices, and a one euro reduction in the minimum wage, will make for a lean new year for many. According to Michael Culloty, spokesperson for the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS), their help line was up about 15 per cent in 2010 and their face to face client base throughout the country is up 10 per cent; this is on top of a 30 per cent increase in 2009. MABS is a national, free and confidential service for people in debt or in danger of getting into debt. 70 per cent of callers to MABS, according to Mr. Culloty, are people who are on social welfare. A huge number of callers, too, are those who had good jobs before the recession and are now experiencing significant change. One in three people who use the service are having trouble coping with their mortgage repayments. People usually entered in to agreements in better times and were able to make payments without difficulty, but since they experienced a decrease in income they were no longer able to. Now, with new budget arrangements, people will find it even harder again. The advice from MABS, says Mr. Culloty, is to re-visit agreements with creditors, write to them detailing your changed circumstances and try to come to new agreements. Another service that many people are now using which they may never have considered using a number of years ago is the Society of St. Vincent De Paul (SVP). St. Vincent de Paul is the largest, voluntary, charitable organisa-
tion in Ireland and exists to fight poverty, but it is a different kind of person that is increasingly requiring help from the society in recent years. According to Kevin Cooley, Vice President of the SVP in Donegal, the society has experienced a shift in people’s thinking over the past year in relation to families and individuals seeking help. He says: “SVP is now an option that people feel they can consider. For many people the need to seek financial help is a necessity that has been imposed upon them by today’s economic circumstances and is not seen as their own doing, so they are less embarrassed about approaching us now.” 2009 saw a 40 per cent increase in the number of families and individuals seeking help from SVP branches in the Northwest and this figure has grown since then to 50 per cent in some parts of Donegal and is expected to grow again. SVP members agreed that the government’s 4 year plan will have the effect of driving more people to the SVP for help and members in Donegal feel the same, says Mr. Cooley. North West SVP members believe that the level of cuts being imposed on social welfare rates and the reduction in the minimum wage will place an unfair and disproportionate burden on people on social welfare and particularly those at work but on low pay. People who have given to SVP in the past may not be able to give as much these days and indeed may now be the people who have been forced to contact the society seeking help. “People are not as financially secure as have been in recent years but they obviously realised that there were people in worse situations than them and gave whatever they could to our Christmas appeal” said Mr. Cooley. He commented: “Giving when you have plenty is admirable but real charity is giving when you have little yourself” and this is what people in the Northwest did last year. One example of a family St. Vincent de Paul helped recently was a married couple who had both lost their jobs; they had four children and asked the SVP office to help with ESB and back
to school costs. “We are receiving calls for this type of help on a daily basis” said Mr. Cooley “Some people still find it difficult to take the first step but invariably they are happy they came forward.” He added that this year’s budget will hit the people that the SVP have already been helping even more. These are lone parents and married families who have lost jobs. “The budget in December has hit those people who have jobs- but many are just above the threshold, so they are not entitled to any help from the government such as medical cards” One thing, Mr. Cooley says, that people are not contacting the SVP for help with is their bigger loans such as mortgages. “We know we are not reaching everyone but we would urge people to come to us for help so we can help them make arrangements with creditors or we could even do a once off payment.” “Since I have been involved with SVP there has been a stigma attached to contacting us. We need to get the message forward that people who need help shouldn’t be afraid to contact us. The fact that more and more people are now approaching us shows that we are needed more than ever, and that it is now easier than ever to speak to us.” It seems that organisations like SVP are being left to clean up after the mess the government and others has left. Anyone who works should be able to maintain a basic standard of living, but sadly that is not the case anymore since the government has imposed one draconian budget after another. The Budget, which included €6bn of cuts, will leave many people thousands of euro worse off this year thanks to savage tax hikes, cuts in child benefit and the dole, the withdrawal of many tax reliefs, cuts in student grants, an increase in third level registration fees and pay cuts in the public service. For many people in the Northwest and throughout Ireland it is the start of a bleak new year, which might be even worse were it not for charitable organisations like St. Vincent de Paul.

Homeowners face rate hike as EU warns of inflation risk HOMEOWNERS were yesterday facing the prospect of higher mortgage payments as early as September. European Central Bank (ECB) president Jean-Claude Trichet warned that concerns about inflation across Europe could force it to hike rates earlier than expected. A rise in rates by the end of the summer would see 600,000 homeowners on tracker and variable-rate mortgages facing higher repayments. Mr Trichet warned that signs of a rise in inflation in the eurozone could prompt the ECB to move soon on rates. His hawkish stance came as a surprise to the markets. Some 400,000 homeowners have tracker mortgages, which will rise with ECB rate hikes. Another 200,000 variable-rate mortgages will also be impacted by a rate rise. Every 0.25pc rise will push repayments up
by 15 on every 100,000 borrowed according to Frank Conway, a director of Irish Mortgage Corporation. The ECB's key interest rate has been 1pc for the last 20 months. Governors of the ECB, including Central Bank governor Patrick Honohan, decided at their meeting yesterday to leave interest rates unchanged. But Mr Trichet warned: "We are permanently alert. We are never pre-committed not to move interest rates and our level of interest rates is designed to deliver price stability." He told a press conference in Frankfurt interest rates were appropriate for now, but warned that inflation was higher than expected. The ECB's main concern is inflation and it has used interest rate rises in the past to attempt to curb price rises. Increases in consumer prices exceeded the ECB's ceiling for the first time in more than two years in December.
Inflation jumped last month to 2.2pc, the first time in two years that it has risen above the Central Bank's target of just below 2pc. Mr Trichet added: "We see evidence of short-term upward pressure on overall inflation, mainly owing to energy prices, which has not so far affected our assessment that price developments will remain in line with price stability over the policy-relevant horizon." However, the ECB is said to be aware that higher interest rates would saddle debt-laden countries such as Ireland, Greece and Portugal with still higher borrowing costs. KBC Bank economist Austin Hughes said he expected a rise in eurozone rates by September. He added that this was because of the poor inflation outlook, growth picking up in the eurozone and because Mr Trichet was due to step down in October.
Increase in people signing on in the Longford come third in Northwest litter survey
950 extra people joined the dole queues in three counties across the Northwest in December. Figures released by the Central Sta-
tistics Office show an increase in the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Leitrim, Donegal and Sligo. In County Donegal 21,712 people are now on social welfare showing a jump of over 650 since November. In Sligo, over 5,400 people are now claiming social welfare benefit’s an increase of over 200 since November. A further 153 signed on at the office in Sligo town over Christmas with another 50 at the Tubbercurry office. In County Leitrim, 3,630 are now claiming social welfare bene-
LONGFORD has come third in the latest litter league, coming behind only Carlow and Trim out of the 53 towns surveyed. Letterkenny came 14th and Sligo has slipped down to 21st with Galway City 29th, Ballinasloe Co. Galway at 31st, Ballina 33rd and Castlebar 38th. The latest figures from Irish Business Against Litter carried out the survey but say these towns are still litter free according to European norms.
Roscommon came 44th in the poll and has been named moderately littered. Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) was set up in 1996 as an alliance of companies who believe that litter has a significant impact on our economic wellbeing. IBAL believes that it is the job of local government to solve our litter problem and that it is through enforcement of litter laws that we can rid our communities of litter.

Jack B Yeats’ last sketch for sale THE last artwork created by Sligo's Jack B Yeats is to be sold at auction in London next month. The sketch titled ‘Roundabout Ponies’ has an estimated value of up to 2000 pounds. It will be sold by fine art auctioneers Bonhams who say the sketch had been drawn by Yeats in the Portobello nursing home in Dublin two days before he died on March 28th, 1957. He presented the sketch, which measures just over 5x4 inches, to the matron, Teresa O’Sullivan, with whom he was friendly. She has also since died and her family has consigned it for sale. It is expected to be put up for auction on the 9th of February. Because oil paintings by Jack B Yeats can sell for hundreds of thousands of euro, his sketches are much sought after by entry-level collectors. In December, Adams in Dublin sold a series of small sketches of scenes in Co Galway; many achieved three times their estimates. The highest price ever paid for a painting by Yeats was £1.2 million for The Wild Ones at Sotheby’s, London, in 1999.

THE owners of the former home to Countess Markievicz, Lissadell House, have erected barriers wrapped in barbed wire around the house, with large boulders put in place to block access to the coach house, which is now home to the Yeat’s Museum. They have introduced the security measures to safeguard their property after a High Court judge ruled that public rights of way existed through the grounds of the Co. Sligo estate. Barrister couple Edward Walsh and Constance Cassidy purchased
the property for 4 million in 2003 after the state rejected the opportunity as it would cost too much to restore. They carried out an intensive programme of restoration, without any public funding, in the house, gardens, stable block and grounds since 2004 and Lissadell is once again a place of beauty. The owners stated on the Lissadell House website: “Our vision was to transform the estate into a flagship for tourism in Sligo and the North West, while providing a secure environment for our chil-
dren and visitors. "We did not wish to exploit Lissadell commercially but to restore the house and gardens to their former glory, make Lissadell selfsustaining and protect this crucible of Ireland’s historic and literary heritage. "This was our vision for Lissadell. Our vision is now at an end.” Eddie Walsh told the national media that the measures were temporary and that more permanent security would be put in place around the coach house soon.
People of the Northwest tell ‘Stories of Hope’ A 93 year old Ballymote born widow has told the touching story of her and her family’s life in Ballymote and how they were forced to uproot and move to Dublin to cope with her husband’s illness. She relays how courage and hope helped her through the difficult transition away from the tranquil life she loved. The story ‘A small farm in Ballymote’ has been written for a book entitled ‘Stories of Hope’ which is a collection of 30 true happenings, retold in the voice of those who experienced them. Mary’s story is about the great love between her and her husband Patrick, or Bab, and how after rearing their eight children Bab began to develop dementia. The family eventually came together and decided it was no longer possible for Mary to look after Bab at home on her own and the decision was made to move to Dublin to live with the children. This was a very big upheaval from their way of life and her story tells of how all this change was helped by her supportive family and gives an insight into her own outlook on life. The book also contains the story of Andy McGovern of Aughavas, Co. Leitrim who is living with motor neuron disease. Mary Hunt from Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, talks about her experience with Schizophrenia and Majella Reid from Longford writes about how becoming BiPolar changed her life.

Mayo sets record for coldest weather
Sligo man hopes he will have the ‘Feirm Factor’ A Sligo man is one of the finalists in this year’s series of reality farming show, Feirm Factor, which starts on TG4 on Sunday January 16 at 8.45 pm. Jude Benson from Mullaghcor, Ballymote, is one of the 12 finalists selected for the show from an initial entry of over 150 people. Jude is the first farmer from Sligo on the show, which is now in its third series. The show challenges the 12 finalists on their farming skills, business acumen and physical and mental endurance. All this is done under the watchful eyes of the three judges, presenter Maura Derrane, former Minis-
ter for Agriculture Alan Dukes and Cork based dairy farmer Sean O’ Lionaird. Each week the farmers battle it out in a carefully selected series of tasks and missions to determine who gets to stay for another week and move closer to winning the top prize of a Land Rover Discovery as well as the title of Feirm Factor winner. Jude has a suckler enterprise which includes pedigree Angus and beef Shorthorn cattle. Only three of the finalists will make it through to the finale at Charleville Castle, Tullamore, Co. Offaly where the winner will be selected.
Three-bed asking prices under 200k in Galway
FREEZING temperatures throughout the month of December have set a new record for mayo in the National Meteorological record books. A temperature of minus 17.5 Celsius at the Straide station on Christmas morning has been officially declared by Met Eireann as the coldest temperature for December since 1922. Markree Castle in Collooney, Co. Sligo, also posted a near record temperature on Christmas Day at min 17.3 degrees Celsius. Markree holds the record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in Ireland, minus 19.1 in January 1881. Freezing conditions over the Christmas period are believed to be one of the longest periods of below zero temperatures ever recorded in Ireland. Martin Sweeney of Straide Climate station has been recording weather patterns and reporting them to Met Eireann for many years and statistics revealed the temperatures did not lift above zero for eight days and nights in a row, making December 2010 the coldest since the records began.

Tanaiste approves LYIT expansion plans
INVESTORS and home-buyers will recall how difficult it was to get a three-bed for under 380k in Galway in late 2006 or early 2007. Latest indications from the Daft.ie House Price report, published last week, are that the price of houses and apartments in the city fell dramatically in the final quarter of last year – with the average ‘asking price’ for a three-bed home dropping below the 200,000 mark for the first time in years. The latest dip in asking prices follows a slight recovery in the June to September period in the city last year, but the overall trend for 2010 reflects a continuing downward price spiral. Over the course of 2010, the asking price for houses in the city dropped by almost 13% to an average of just over 240,000 – in the ‘crazy prices’ days of late 2006, this figure was in the region of 400k. The average asking price for a four bed house in the city is now down to 269,000, while even a five bedroomed house now commands a ‘first quote’ of 393,000 – an ‘unthinkable price’ just over four years ago. Two bed houses or apartments have an average price of 190,000 with ‘single beds’ down to 148,000.
CONNACHT people are more optimistic than those in other provinces about 2011 according to a survey carried out by lastminute.com. The holiday website polled people throughout the country before the recent budget, and found that eight out of ten Connacht people were looking forward to 2011. The same question was asked again two days after the budget and 65 per cent of Connacht people were still feeling positive. Most positive about 2011 were 1824 year olds, with 74 per cent eagerly awaiting the new year. However, 27 per cent of 18-24 year olds said they were planning on emigrating in the next year. Not surprisingly, lack of work was given as the main reason for this, particularly in people aged between 25-34. Nine per cent of the overall interviewed said they intend to move abroad in 2011.
THE Tanaiste and Minister for Education and skills Mary Coughlan has approved funding to Letterkenny Institute of Technology in Donegal to purchase two separate plots of land to allow for future expansion and growth of the institute. The institute currently operates from a campus of just 21 acres which is one of the lowest land banks among the country’s ITs. The Tanaiste has approved a ten acre site located directly opposite the grounds of the institute as well as 66 acres located Northeast of Knocknamara roundabout. The site is approximately one mile from the existing Letterkenny IT campus. The additional land will be utilised for playing fields and off campus buildings to be used for ‘stand alone’ functions not directly related to day to day timetabled educational activities.

Sligo’s Mark McSharry claimed 44,314 while Geraldine Feeney got 44,321. In total senators claimed over 2.1m in expenses on top of their salaries while the Senate sat for just 98 days during the period in 2010. Figures obtained by the Sunday Independent under the Freedom of Information Act revealed also that Leitrim's Fianna Fail Senator John Ellis claimed 44,374 while fellow party and county Senator Paschal Mooney claimed 27,220 in expenses last year. Senator Mooney re-joined the Seanad in January of 2010 after successfully contesting a by-election. Cavan's Joe O'Reilly FG made it into the top ten list of highest claims with 47,356 while Roscommon's FF took Terry Leyden home 45,398.

94 hospital beds closed across the Northwest THE President of the Irish Association for emergency medicine has recently described as ‘criminal’ the number of bed closures in hospitals across the country. This comes after the Irish Nurses and Midwifes Association have said that 94 beds are closed at hospitals across the Northwest region despite the fact that emergency departments are severely overcrowded, with 66 beds closed at Sligo General and 28 closed at Letterkenny General. A record number of patients are on trolleys in emergency departments and Health Minister Mary Hearney has been condemned by opposition parties among
others who have said that her approach to the crisis has been totally inadequate. Five years ago, Hearny described the trolley crisis as a national emergency when there were 495 patients on trolleys, there were a record 569 on Wednesday January 5. The number on the trolleys fell to 400 in the days following the record high. Hospital officials said the cause of the surge in patients was the recent outbreak of swine flu. The minister had been criticised for her silence during the overcrowding crisis and remained on holiday abroad for a number of days after figures were revealed.
Music for Galway presents ‘Amongst Friends’
Learner drivers on their sixth provisional licence FIGURES obtained by the Irish Independent newspaper have revealed that 67 per cent of drivers who took their test in Sligo last year passed while only 30 per cent of people Rathgar in Dublin passed in the same period. The findings showed that the pass rates in centres all around the country vary widely and that numbers passing the test nationally have dropped over the past number of years. It was also revealed that a record 16,200 learner drivers have renewed their provisional license at least six times after failing or refusing to sit their driving test. The figures reveal a 184 fold increase since 2003 of the
number of learner drivers renewing their provisional license six or more times. In 2003 just 79 drivers renewed their licence six times and just nine were on their seventh. Although the overall number on a provisional licence has fallen by almost 100,000 in the past seven years, the figures highlight that many drivers are either refusing to sit their test or are repeatedly failing it. Many of those who have renewed their provisional license multiple times may not have even taken a test as they only need apply to do their test in order to renew their licence but they don’t need to sit it.

Sligo man hopes to be ‘The Biggest Loser’
Three killed on roads in the Northwest this year
A Sligo man, Paddy Cunningham, is taking part in an ITV1 reality TV show ‘The Biggest Loser’ which first aired on Tuesday last, January 10 and on TV3 on Wednesday January 11. The show is a spin off of the American Reality TV show of the same name where the basic format is overweight contestants competing to win a cash prize of 25,000 by losing the highest percentage of their starting body weight. The show challenges 14 contestants to undergo dramatic physical change without any kind of surgery. Paddy, who is originally from
Two people were killed on Sligo’s roads last week over a black 24 hour period. On Thursday January 6, 32 year old Martin Devaney from Ballina died at the scene after his motorbike was in collision with a van and trailer. The collision, on the N59 at Owenbeg, happened on a 6km stretch of roadway west of Dromore West, Co. Sligo. The area is a known black spot with up to ten deaths in the past 20 years. Since Mr. Devaney’s death there have been urgent calls for the upgrading of this stretch of road. Mr. Devaney was a father of two from Greenhills Estate, Ballina, Co. Mayo. Less than 24 hours later, a dairy farmer who recently celebrated his 80th birthday died in a crash when his car swerved into a ditch near Slish Wood on a frosty road. The man was named as Paddy Joe McGoldrick from Crossboy, Ballintogher. His wife Mary, who was a passenger in the car, suffered minor injuries. The couple were said to be on their way to Sligo General where Paddy Joe was due to have some tests done. On Saturday last, January 8, a 50 year old man was killed in Co. Longford when the van he was travelling in hit a ditch at Fostragh, near Aughnacliffe, at about 8.20pm. The man was named as Sean McNerney, who was well known in GAA circles for his involvement with Dromard GAA.
Sligo but now lives in Reading is competing with his close friend Wil against six other pairs for the ultimate prize. Paddy said his weight was holding him back and cited this as the reason to lose some of his 21 stone starting weight. He recently spoke to Today FM DJ Ray D’arcy and said that although he had been overweight all his life it was a picture of himself taken at his Summerhill College Reunion that really shocked him in to action.
Learn The Power of Persuasion
PERSUASIVE people make for interesting observation. Entertainment value aside, the same individuals can also be highly influential in a variety of arenas.Their skills infiltrate even the toughest business and so-
cial interactions with ease by virtue of their possession of the ability to charm colleagues with their magnetic presence. The techniques are often covert and baffling to the onlooker who finds themselves agreeing to something they had no reason to believe they needed five minutes prior to their interaction with the charismatic individual. The power of persuasion is hypnotic in many respects and the reality is that these persuasive skills can be learned. It is about semantics. It is also about confidence and about language being used effectively to convey a simple message with a specific goal in sight. If you don’t know someone who is willing to teach you the art of persuasion a training in hypnosis will teach you what you need to know. Hypnosis is about language and the effective use of language. Used properly
it can be employed on a day to day basis in everyday conversation to have a compelling force on the actions and opinions of others or in an office setting to help eliminate fears and phobias. One course which is recognised internationally is the NGH certified hypnosis training course. To date, over 12,000 people have completed their NGH training and the qualificationis recognised in 65 countries worldwide. Bodywatch Ltd. are recognised NGH course providers and for those interested in a thorough education in this discipline the next course starts in February 2011 and runs one weekend a month for five months. Course director Niamh Flynn recounts the ubiquitous applications which follow on from completion of this practical training programme. ‘The
course is very well structured and I think most of the students have discovered that apart from having the option of being able to set up in practice afterwards as a hypnotherapist to help people to stop smoking and lose weight etc. most say that it has had a dramatic impact on the way they interact with their family, friends and acquaintances. It is fun to learn, it uncovers many of the secrets of influential people and there is an emphasis on practical work throughout the course so that students use what they learn until it becomes second nature. As the skills become automatic confidence grows and the effects are far reaching.’ Anyone interested in attending the next Bodywatch NGH hypnosis training course can contact Niamh on 091 720145 or see www.bodywatch.ie for details.

Farmer with marital troubles sought help from Haughey IT WAS back in 1980, but recentlypublished state papers for the period reveal some interesting correspondence from people from the Roscommon region. Among them was a letter from a Roscommon farmer having trouble with his wife who took the unusual approach of writing to the then Taoiseach, Charles Haughey, for help. According to the papers the farmer, who was having problems with his wife of four years, told Mr. Haughey she hadn’t a penny when he married her, but she “has refused to have a child, cook, wash or clean the house. All she does is walk the roads and lie in
bed all day. When I ask her what she intends doing, she tells me mind my own business, that she will do as she likes.” He claimed that she left the house for four months the previous year “dossing around with old bachelor men”. He explained that he had tried to prevent her returning home, but she got into the house “in spite of me”. “Could you please tell me is she entitled to equal share in my property, as I think she is entitled to none of it,” he asked Mr Haughey. The Taoiseach’s secretary said that only the man’s legal adviser could clarify his position in law.

Sligo, Derry & Knock route aid chopped; Donegal survives! Continued from front page
John O’Mahoney TD for Mayo described it as a hammer blow to the West, while Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP could only thank the Minister for the remaining crumbs left on the Donegal table, but was critical of his other decisions. The minister said improvements in road and rail transport and the need for best value for department funds as reasons for the decision. He added the routes to Dublin from the affected airports will be open to commercial air services once the PSOs are terminated. The Government has been accused of turning its back on the west with crude cuts to funding, according to Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony. “Noel Dempsey last night dealt Ireland West Airport Knock a major blow by announcing the government’s withdrawal of funding to the PSO on the Dublin – Knock route from July this year.
“As usual, the Government has announced a decision on the back of a report, without any consultation with Opposition parties, or the people who will be affected. “He does this based on a value for money report but he has not announced any alternative or extra funding for the airport which is also recommended in the same report. Could for instance an international PSO route connect Knock to a European hub which would open up the vast potential of world travel to and from IWA Knock” “Fine Gael was, and is, willing to engage in a constructive assessment of regional airports to achieve better value for money. Most people agree that the existing PSO structure for regional airports needs to be reformed, in order to incentivise airlines to increase passenger numbers, and to get a better return on investment. Instead
of doing this, the Minister has decided to keep the current PSO levy in place in Kerry and Donegal, while axing funding for Ireland West Airport Knock and other regional airports. “Minister Dempsey’s decision makes a mockery of every Government pledge to protect jobs, transport links and develop local economies. Knock has played a crucial role in local and regional development and deservers to be rewarded not cut.” Meanwhile Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP has welcomed the continuation of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) route between Donegal and Dublin. However, he expresses deep disappointment in the decision to discontinue PSO funding to the other regional airports in his North West constituency. Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP who has supported Donegal Airport from the start said today “I have stated at all times that Donegal Airport could not continue commercially without PSO funding. The PSO is vitally important due to the isolated location of West Donegal, which is without a national primary road or rail link.” Capital works are currently ongoing at Donegal Airport where the full Instrument Landing System is being replaced at a cost of approximately 400,000. The runway will be reconfigured and overlaid together with other neces-
Kids with asthma 'have more cavities'
CHILDREN and adolescent with asthma may have poorer dental health than their peers, a new study indicates. Some 470,000 people in Ireland have asthma, including one in five children. A Swedish researcher found that young people with the condition have more cavities and suffer more often from gingivitis the early stage of gum disease - than their peers. They examined children, adolescents and young adults in the age groups three, six, 1216 and 18-24, with and without asthma. The first study revealed that three-year-olds with asthma have more cavities than three-yearolds without asthma. "The children with asthma had a greater tendency to breathe through the mouth. They became dry in the mouth and were therefore given sugary drinks more often. This may have contributed to them developing higher caries (cavity) prevalence," explained Malin Stensson, a dental hygienist and researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy. These children were then followed in a study from the age of three to the age of six. According to Ms Stensson, it became clear that the three-year-olds with asthma subsequently developed more cavities than children without asthma. The research then compared the oral health of adolescents aged 12-16 who had
long-term moderate or severe asthma with that of adolescents of the same age without asthma. "Only one out of 20 in the asthma group was caries-free, while 13 out of 20 were caries-free in the control group. One factor that may have influenced the development of caries is somewhat lower level of saliva secretion, which was probably caused by the medication taken by those with asthma.Adolescents with asthma also suffered more often from gingivitis than those without asthma," Ms Stensson said. The research also examined the oral health of young adults aged 18-24 years, with and without asthma. The results from this age group were nearly identical with those in the group of 12-16-year-olds, although the differences between those with asthma and those without were not as big. Ms Stensson acknowledged that the numbers of participants in the studies were relatively small, and it may be difficult to generalise the results. However, what is interesting, she noted, is that young people with asthma were found to have more cavities than those without asthma, even if they came from an area with relatively good oral health. "The study is particularly reliable because the groups are homogenous with respect to age and area of residence. Further, the par-
sary safety works at an estimated cost of 2.3m. 90% of these works are funded by the exchequer. Donegal Airport currently provide 2 flights daily to Dublin and 2 flights weekly to Glasgow International Airport with additional flights during the summer months . Pat the Cope has described the announcement as “great news for the future of Donegal Airport, which is vital to the economic, tourism, social and cultural life of the region”. He paid tribute to the board, management and staff at the airport for their commitment and dedication. He also paid tribute to users of the airport who continue to make it a viable business and he encouraged them to continue to do so. Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP also stated “I am deeply disappointed by the decision to discontinue PSO funding to the other regional airports in my Euro constituency namely Sligo, Knock and Galway airports, in addition to Derry Airport from July 2011. “I believe that these airports should qualify for PSO funding under the guidelines imposed by the European Commission. I will continue to pursue this issue with Minister Dempsey and Siim Kallas, the European Commissioner for Transport.”
ticipants with asthma had all been accurately diagnosed by a specialist. One of the studies is longitudinal, and this gives extra strength to the results," Ms Stensson said. She insisted that it is essential that young people with asthma receive extra dental care early. "Medical and dental personnel and the parents of children with asthma should be aware of the connection between asthma and oral hygiene."
Mayo wife’s hunch pays dividends THERE were scenes of jubilation at National Lottery offices last week, as a Co. Mayo couple, who played EuroMillions Plus on a hunch, picked up their cheque for 500,000. “All week I had it in my head that we should play EuroMillions Plus. So when he headed to the shop on Thursday, I reminded him to buy a ticket,” said the lucky wife. The husband added: “But I bought a ticket for the Lotto draw on Saturday night and never even thought of EuroMillions.” She continued: “When I realised he didn’t get the EuroMillions ticket, it continued to play on my mind so on Friday I told him ‘don’t forget it this time.’ Thankfully he didn’t.” “Can you believe it?” said the husband. “If I’d bought the ticket on Thursday, we probably wouldn’t be sitting here today.” The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, bought the 6 Quick Pick ticket in Kennys, Bridge St, Louisburgh, Co. Mayo on the day of the draw (7 January 2010). He added: “We’re absolutely delighted. We didn’t sleep a wink last night. This prize will make us comfortable for many years to come.”

Pope John Paul to be beatified THE Pope has approved a miracle attributed to the late Pope John Paul II and set May 1 as the date for him to be beatified. Pope Benedict XVI declared in a decree today that the cure of a French nun who suffered from Parkinson’s disease was miraculous, the last step needed for the beatification. The ceremony is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Rome to celebrate one of the most popular popes of all time. A second miracle is needed for John Paul to be made a saint. Benedict put John Paul on the fast track to possible sainthood just weeks after he died in 2005, responding to the chants of “Santo Subito!” or “Sainthood immediately!” that erupted during his funeral. John Paul died in 2005 and had been Pope for 26 years.

Scanlon regains whip as Sligo/Nth Leitrim moves to election mode
Eamon Scanlon
AS the Government teeters amid a leadership crisis and no-confidence motions, Sligo/Nth Leitrim TD, Eamon Scanlon, has been readmitted to the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party, just days after his constituency colleague, Dr Jimmy Devins, announced his intention to retire from the national political scene and not seek re-election. The two Sligo-based deputies had resigned the party whip last year (Aug) over the government's stance on the cancer services controversial move from Sligo General Hospital to University College Hospital Galway. However Save Sligo Cancer Services campaigners have maintained that the Fianna Fáil duo were part of the problem by voting with the government on the matter. The campaigners have also maintained that the resignations from the parliamentary party was just an empty cosmetic exercise designed to try and placate the electorate. Their claim may be borne out by the fact that neither

Sligo’s Devins the latest FF casualty FORMER Junior Minister and Sligo-North Leitrim Fianna Fail Jimmy Deputy Devins will not contest the next general election. First elected as a Dail Deputy in 2002 he later retained his seat at the last election in 2007, and held a Junior Ministry position within the Department of Health. He was later dropped as a Minister by Brian Cowen and later voluntarily withdrew the party whip over his stance on the removal of cancer services at Sligo General Hospital. A genuine man of chacter and integrity, he came in for much criticism for his party’s stance on Sligo General and this took a great toll on him. His decision, although not unexpected will anger many genuine FF supporters, who believe that they have been betrayed by their own party.
In reality, Dr Devins would have been severely handicapped in trying to retain his seat at the third time of asking over the Sligo Hospital debacle. In his statement last evening he said: “Having been first elected to Sligo County Council in 1991 and subsequently to Dail Eireann in 2002, it has been a great honour and privilege to serve the people of Sligo and Leitrim. I want to thank them for their support and courtesy at all times. “I would like to thank my colleagues at local and national level for their collegiality and I have especially valued the co-operation and support of my Dail colleague, Eamon Scanlon, T.D “The decision to voluntarily withdraw from the Fianna Fail party whip was a very difficult decision and was made because of the cessation of breast cancer surgery at Sligo General Hospital. That decision I believe was wrong. “I will continue as an active member in the Fianna Fail party at local level and will of course give my full support to whoever is selected by the party to contest the forthcoming election in the Sligo/North Leitrim constituency.” Dr Devins will continue to be available to represent constituents in the period up to the General election.”
Extreme diets 'just a quick fix' PEOPLE should think twice before embarking on overly strict diet routines that encourage them to cut out entire food groups, a leading nutritionist has warned. According to consultant nutritionist, Aveen Bannon, extreme diets only provide quick fix results and are not a long-term solution to weight problems. "There are so many conflicting health messages out there when it comes to New Year dieting. There are lots of extreme diets, including the cabbage soup diet, maple syrup diet and three-day diet. What the majority of these diets have in common is that they recommend cutting out food groups like caffeine, alcohol and sugar and are generally very low calorie," Ms Bannon explained. However while these diets promise quick weight loss - up to 14lbs in two weeks - they are not particularly healthy and a person could find themself experiencing negative side-
effects, including tiredness, constipation and bad breath. "In these cases, you actually lose a lot of water initially, which is what explains the weight loss, so the rapid results are what appeal to people. However if these diets are followed for a prolonged period of time you run the risk of having an imbalanced diet and losing muscle mass, which can have a knock-on effect by lowering your metabolism and bone mass. This can impact long-term bone health," Ms Bannon warned. She said that the best way to approach New Year dieting is actually very simple. "Rather than eliminating everything, focus on what you want to improve. Get to bed as early as you can, drink more water, include more fruit and vegetables in your diet and look at your portion sizes." She added that with a healthy diet and regular exercise, ‘you will see lasting results instead of a temporary fix'.

The awards are held by NOffLA annually to recognise those off-licences around the country that offer exceptional service to customers and demonstrate excellence in retail standards. According to NOffLA Chairperson, Evelyn Jones the awards have
been of the highest standard to date; “The standard this year really has been outstanding, particularly with regards to product knowledge and customer service. It hasn’t been an easy year for the industry so our members have really had to raise the bar and get a better understanding of exactly what the customer wants. It’s evident from the judges’ feedback that they have been doing just that.” Marks were also awarded for key criteria including overall appearance, hygiene, product range, customer service and product knowledge. Judging began in July 2010, a tough but rewarding journey for all of this year’s award winners. Evelyn continues; “The Awards are well recognised by industry and by the general public so will go a long way to demonstrating the quality offered by our finalists.”

ust as the '50s and '60s are back, so too are particular elements of the '70s.There are two main aesthetics: '70s bohemian, and '70s sophisticated glamour. When it comes to the latter, think dresses that fall like shimmering water in the evening and high-waist pants with elegant blouses by day.
Sophisticated 70s: women's trends We all want that vintage vibe in our wardrobe. That essence of an era gone by. And we want to cherry pick the sleekest, sexiest, and most stylish looks from it. In recent years we've worn the best of the 20s and 30s, seen the rebirth and fading of an 80s come back, and we're just about to do it all again. But this time, its the 1970s that are due for a reinterpretation. While '70s fashion is making waves and sure to continue on as a fashion trend in 2011, let's not forget that there are several variants. And you know what that means; all the more ways to get lots of wear out of your key seventies pieces, by taking them from '70s boho to a more sophisticated '70s look.
70s Sophisticate: the look There's an underlying confidence to this trend that's key. Even the more demure looks need to be carried off with an air of sexuality and a sort of defiant independence. There's a boldness. It's in the addition of that floppy felt hat, those exotic jewels, that super-high pair of platforms. At night time the hint can snowball into a statement: think Bianca Jagger at Studio 54 in a slinky gown, ivory cigarette holder in hand, and you've got the picture. Read on for tips for both day and night time looks.
Style Icon - Bianca Jagger
70s Sophistication by night By night the '70s sophisticate turns into the ultimate socialite, with look-at-me shimmering fabrics and cuts that either tightly hug or sensually drape over the body. • Choose high sheen fabrics with a '70s disco-inspired edge, like lurex or silk; anything with a metallic thread. • Add a ruffled neckline under a brocade blazer or tuxedo jacket, paired with a sharp pair of pants. • Long, slinky gowns with draping, low necklines or dress slits are the ultimate in '70s night time glamour.
Accessorising a Sophisticated '70s look Accessories are key when it comes to creating a '70s look. Some things to keep in mind: • The right handbag completes a look. Try for smart, high quality bags like a leather satchel for day, and a small bag with a long strap for night. • Big, statement leather belts slung over mini skirts or maxi dresses add impact and fair to a seventies-inspired outfit. • A pair of on-trend thigh high boots are probably already be in your wardrobe by now - pair them with hot pants or a skirt for a decidedly sexed-up yet sophisticated '70s look. • Wear lots of jewellery - but keep it a little cleaner than for a boho look. Try lots of rings with bold stones, neat piles of bangles, and long pendant necklaces and strings of beads. • Look to complimentary hairstyles like a sleek longer bob, masses of bouncy curls, or long, flowing hair.
'70s Sophistication by day By day it's all about clean yet voluminous silhouettes, and earthy '70s colour palettes. Look for: • High waisted wide-leg pants or flares, smartly belted in. • Neat bow-blouses, especially ones with billowing or bishop sleeves. Particularly great are fabrics like silk and satin. • Roll neck sweaters tucked into pants or skirts. Add to the '70s effect by layering over beaded necklaces or a vest. • For those more daring, a pair of hot pants are the ultimate '70s item. • A smart printed jumpsuit is another great alternative.

Python wedding draws crowds
NEARLY 1,000 people flocked to a wedding in Cambodia - between two snakes. Bride Chamreun, a 16ft python weighing 200lb, wed her smaller mate in Village One in Kandal province, just south of the capital Phnom Penh. Buddhist monks blessed the pair and villagers showered them with flowers during the two-hour ceremony believed to bring prosperity and peace to those attending. "We organised the wedding ceremony for the pythons in order to oust bad things and bring good luck and happiness for our villages," said 41-year-old Neth Vy, who owns Chamreun. "We were told that the two pythons are husband and wife and they need to live together, and if we don't marry them we will meet bad luck. Mr Neth said he had found the then-tiny python while fishing in 1994, and that she Since taking the snake in, he said no misfortune had befallen his family. The python groom, named Krong Pich, was caught 12 days ago by people in a neighbouring village.
Hypnotist warms up workers A COBBLER who won't buy heaters for his freezing staff has had them hypnotised into thinking they're warm. Martin Connellan bought coats for the lads in his workshop after temperatures plunged to -13°C, reports The Sun. But with doors left constantly open to clear solvent fumes, the workers were still left shivering in the snow. But after a five-minute session with hypnotist James Kerwin they have reportedly been stripping down to shorts and T-shirts. Worker Adam Hood, 27, said: "I definitely feel much hotter than I was. All my life I've had cold hands and that's even gone now. It's crazy how you can go from one extreme to the other like that." Mr Connellan, who runs the workshop in Bromsgrove, Worcs, said: "The lads were all complaining because I like to keep the doors open. "I bought them all jackets but they were still moaning so this was the last resort. "I am a very sceptical person so I didn't think it would work - but soon they were complaining about how hot they were." Mr Kerwin, of Studley, Warwicks, said: "It's all about mind over matter. It's a case of reprogramming people like you would a computer. "You can retrain people into thinking differently about how they feel. It seems to have done the trick."

A US pilot sparked a hijacking alert after spilling his coffee on the controls, issuing a distress signal and forcing the plane to divert. The United Airlines flight from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany, was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Canada, reports the Daily Telegraph. The flight landed safely in Toronto after the coffee spill caused distress signals to go out, including code 7500, which means hijacking or unlawful interference. A report on Transport Canada's website said the pilot "had inadvertently squawked a 7500 code after spilling coffee on the aircraft's radio equipment, which interfered with the communications equipment".
"The flight crew had advised that they had communication problems and subsequently reported that they had some navigation problems as well and from there the pilot in the command diverted the flight onto Toronto," said Maryse Durette, a Transport Canada spokeswoman. United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson said: "It was a beverage. During light turbulence one of the crew members beverages spilt which then caused issues with the aeroplanes communications equipment." Mr Johnson said the crew was in contact with air traffic control throughout. He said that the pilot elected to divert the flight rather than cross the Atlantic Ocean while experiencing a communications problem. The Boeing 777 was carrying 241 passengers and 14 crew members. They were flown back to Chicago on another plane and put up in hotel rooms overnight before catching a later flight to Frankfurt.
Watchdogs ground Mile High Flights FLIGHT watchdogs have grounded an airline that offers couples the chance to join the Mile High Club - over fears distracted pilots could crash. Mile High Flights charges lovers ÂŁ640 to romp in the clouds on board its specially adapted Cessna single-engined plane, reports The Mirror. But health and safety bosses at the Civil Aviation Authority have refused to renew its licence, saying pilots cannot keep their minds on the job. Mike Crisp, 36, founder of Mile High Flights in Gloucestershire, said: "I'm not giving-
up because of some prudish snobbery on the part of the CAA. Joining the club is something a lot of couples dream of." The CAA said:
"We cast no moral judgments on what people do in their planes, but it became apparent safety criteria couldn't be met."
Woman calls 911 to force man to propose
A Chicago woman called 911 - to try to get police to scare her boyfriend into proposing to her. Ana Perez, 40, from the city's Northwest side, claimed her boyfriend was attacking her when she called the emergency number. But when police arrived, she changed her story, admitting she was trying to scare her boyfriend into marrying her. Police were not amused, and charged Perez with disorderly conduct, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Capt Ronald Pontecore said officers raced to the scene, believing a woman was in danger, "only to find out it's something ridiculous like that." "She called 911 to scare him and have the police force him to marry her," he said. The boyfriend had no intention of marrying Perez and was actually in the process of breaking up with her, added Capt Pontecore.

Pen that Reduces Stress
science news
Future Ferraris will be mind readers MIGUEL Bruns Alonso, an Industrial Design PhD student from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, came up with the idea of creating an anti-stress pen. According to the inventor, the prototype pen is able to spot short-term stress in a person that uses it and then reduce some of that stress. The device identifies stress when it is being fidgeted with. As soon as the anti-stress pen detects fidgeting, it gets the person to stop. Alonso carried out several tests and noticed that people are likely to play with their pens when they nervous. He equipped his invention with motion sensors. These are used to identify nervous movement and when that happens, the built-in magnets create a counterweight effect, which makes it difficult for the user to move the pen. After testing the anti-stress pen on different people, it was unveiled that those who used the pen had their heart rate 5 percent lower than those who didn't. No one in the study group was aware of the anti-stress pen, reports TUDelft.
Flower Power - Device that Coverts Light into Power
HANA Mado is the name of Sony's latest invention that has been presented at the Eco Products 2010 exhibition. It would be interesting to note that the name Hana Mado means "Flower Window." The invention not only looks beautiful but is in fact very useful. Technologically speaking it represents a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) which turns light into electricity. The Japanese tech giant carried out a demonstration of its new device. The company attached a small fan to Hana Mado to illustrate how the device constantly produces power. When the light hit the device the fan span and when it was blocked the fan stopped spinning, reports Gizmag. There are two main advantages of Sony's invention: the technology is cheaper than a solar cell and the device is very easily to install in a building. So far Sony did not reveal the concrete date when its latest invention will hit the market.
FERRARI could soon unveil a supercar that reads the mind of its driver and alters the car's set up accordingly. According to 'Autocar', Ferrari's amazing new system analyses the driver's mental and physical state, then uses that information to alter settings like traction control. Currently in early development, the system uses cameras and sensors to measure the driver's respiration, blood pressure, heart rate, blink rate and brain activity. It can then determine stress levels and alertness and automatically adjust the chassis for either a sharper or a more relaxing drive. The system will, according to Ferrari, use: "Various biometric and psychometric sensors for recording and transmitting the values of a number of psychophysical parameters of the driver."
The latest Ferrari, the 458 Italia (pictured), allows the driver to alter the steering, throttle, gearing, suspension and stability control systems using a steering wheelmounted 'Manettino' dial. But the Italian company reckons that drivers tend to select settings based on an over-estimation of their own skills. According to Ferrari: "The dynamic performance may be modified to enhance driving safety in the case of a tired or unresponsive driver, and also to enhance driving pleasure and/or performance in the
case of an alert, responsive driver."Therefore, the system is a theoretical safety device because it sets up the car based on the driver's actual skill and physical condition.
There are no plans to release the technology just yet, but it could appear as early as 2012 in the replacement of the Ferrari Enzo - the company's flagship supercar.
Rolls 'considering electric car' AN electric Rolls-Royce car remains a possibility, the company's boss has suggested. But it would be "wrong for the brand and wrong for our customers" to make a decision without exploring all options, added Rolls-Royce Motor Cars chief executive Torsten Muller-Otvos. There has been talk over the past two years of a possible electric Rolls and at one point it seemed possible that such a vehicle could be produced by the end of 2010. Speaking to the BBC, Mr MullerOtvos said all options for alternativelyfuelled vehicles were being considered and that nothing had been ruled out.
He went on: "We are not going to make any rash decisions. It would be wrong for the brand and wrong for our customers if we were to take a decision without fully exploring all options." He was speaking as Rolls-Royce announced record annual car sales in 2010 - up 171% on 2009 and more than double the previous record set in 2008. All regions demonstrated significant sales growth, with particularly strong results seen in Asia Pacific, the USA and the Middle East. The USA remained the biggest single market for Rolls-Royce in 2010, followed by China and the UK.
Amazing floating supercar for sale A one-off amphibious car is for sale on online auction site eBay for £500,000. Called the Dobbertin Hydrocar, it's the brainchild of owner and creator Rick Dobbertin, who took almost 19,000 hours over nine years to build it. That's perhaps why he's seen fit to put a $777,000 (£502,457) price tag on it. At under £27 per hour, it's not a bad return. By its creator's admission, the Hydrocar is not ideal regular transport. In the car's lengthy eBay listing Dobbertin warns: "If you're looking for a daily driver - this isn't it." Power comes from a 750bhp Chevrolet engine, but the Hydrocar is unlikely to match a Ferrari in a drag race because it weighs four tonnes.
Dobbertin himself admits that the car suffers from a distinct lack of performance. It's capable of a top speed of 60mph on the water, though. As well as the bright yellow paintwork, visual highlights include popup headlamps, a pair of leather Recaro bucket seats and a very neatly trimmed cockpit. The Hydrocar transforms from 'land mode' to 'water mode' at the flick of a switch. The Dobbertin auction ends on January 13, and if you fancy a bargain, it is possible to make an offer lower than the asking price. The Hydrocar currently resides in New York, so a UK suitor will have to allow a hefty fuel budget in order to sail the car back to Blighty.

The Massacre of the Friars 1642: AN invasion led by Sir Frederick Hamilton's soliders resulted in the burning of Sligo town, which left hundreds of locals dead and wounded. The British forces destroyed the interior of Sligo Abbey, setting the place alight and killing every friar in sight. The invasion was donned 'the massacre of the friars', as locals people tried to stop the British Forces from destroying the historical abbey. Legend says that worshippers saved the Abbey's silver bell, which was thrown into Lough Gill and it is thought that only those free from sin can hear its peal. The few friars that managed to escape, took shelter with local people. They eventually returned to the ruins, where they set about rebuilding and repairing the burnt out Abbey. The forces did not stop once they destroyed the Dominican order friary, instead they proceeded to set the town on fire, killing everyone in sight. Over 300 women and children were savagely murdered by the rampaging soldiers. William Butler Yeats retells the historic story and the legends that have been passed on from generation to generation in his short story entitled; “The Curse of the Fires and of the Shadows”.
Countess Markievicz elected to parliament 1918: THE year that Countess Markievicz wins a seat in parliament as the Sinn Fein candidate for Dublin and obtains the honour of being the first woman to be elected to Parliament. The Sligo lady was born in London, but spent her childhood at Lissadell Estate. From a young age, she developed an interest in politics, joining the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and Sinn Fein. She joined James Connolly's Irish Citizen Army, where she designed uniforms and composed the anthem. Her role in the 1916 Rising incarcerated her in Kilmainham Gaol, where she was given the death sentence; however she was released under general amnesty several months later . Just a year later, Countess Markievicz ran in the General Election and got elected. She later served as the Minister of Labour in the Irish Cabinet and was the first female member of the cabinet.

County Sligo The Mullaghmore Bombing from the
AUGUST 27th 1979, Louis Mountbatten, the uncle to Prince Philip and best known for his role as the last Viceroy of the British Indian Empire made a decision to go sailing, to check on his crab pots. He often came on holidays to the sea-faring village of Mullaghmore, where he retreated in his own estate, Classiebawn Castle. On that morning, Louis Mountbatten and his family set off in a 30 foot wooden boat called the Shadow V, which was moored in the small harbour at Mullaghmore. Within minutes, a bomb planted underneath the boat’s engine by the IRA detonated, instantly killing Lord Louis Mountbatten, his grandson Nicholas, his eldest daughters,
Mother in law Lady Brabourne and a local teenager, Paul Maxwell who had a summer job helping out on the boat. Paul Maxwell was the first body to be recovered from the water. The terrorist attack three decades ago, led to one of the biggest police investigations in Irish history. At the time of the explosion, IRA members Thomas McMahon and Francis McGirl were 70 miles away, in Garda custody after getting stopped at a traffic checkpoint. While McGirl later was acquitted of his charges, due to insufficient evidence, Thomas McMahon did not get off. Instead, he was jailed until August 1998, where he was released as part of the Good Friday peace agreement.
Sligo’s Cholera epidemic 1832: CHOLERA reached Ireland by 1832, after gripping most of Europe in the previous years. The first case on the island was reported in Belfast, quickly followed by its arrival to Dublin. The ports of Ireland were considered to be the likely places that cholera would make their entrance to parts of the country and Sligo port was no stranger to the plague which badly hit the county. The threatened calamity that the press talked of suddenly became a reality throughout 1832. There were more deaths in Sligo than anywhere else in Ireland. People died on the streets, whole families were wiped out, as the contagious disease spread from household to household. Cholera not only struck the destitute but the rich and no one was safe from it. Doctors worked day and night to save people from death, but on average, they could only save 50% of victims. There was a 1 in 2 survival rate and those with any underlying
conditions were the most vulnerable. Cleanliness was promoted, as filthy houses were being blamed as the reason the disease lingered for so long in Sligo. However, soon people realised that it was containment that would save them and finally rid cholera from the county. Social gatherings were cancelled, people were advised to curtail visits to friends to avoid catching the disease and infected articles of clothing were burnt. Local legend contends that Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula had his macabre imagination fired by his mother's accounts of the Cholera in Sligo. She would tell him about the coffin makers who would knock on people's doors in the night, looking for corpses to bury. Some of the people were still alive and almost being buried alive, due to people's fear of the disease spreading.
Last of Inishmurray’s residents leaves 12TH NOVEMBER 1948: The last of the residents of Inishmurray Island, just seven kilometres off the coast of County Sligo, departed to relocate to the mainland. The 228-acre island had been home to 100 people just sixty years before the last of the residents departed. However, the population began to dwindle as one by one families moved to the mainland or emigrated to Britain and the U.S.A. Saint Molaiste set up a Christian Monastery on the island in the 6th Century and today, the island has become famous as a pilgrimage destination.

Fermanagh illegal diesel plant dismantled Customs and Revenue in Northern Ireland have dismantled an illegal diesellaundering plant in Fermanagh. The discovery of the plant was made in the Derrylin area. Officials believe that the plant was capable of producing more than half a million litres of illicit fuel a year with an estimated £300,000 in lost revenue. A number of vehicles, including a cattle truck used to transport the illicit fuel were removed , as were pumps, equipment and 3,000 litres of fuel were also removed from the site. HMRC assistant director of specialist investigations Mike Connolly told the BBC that fuel-laundering was dangerous and something the organisation took very seriously. “We have dismantled a number of large laundering plants in recent weeks. These operations typically generate tonnes of toxic waste, which is often dumped in the countryside. On this occasion no waste was recovered from the laundering site,” he said. “There is also a risk to other road-users from the transport of laundered fuel. The vehicles used are unsafe and the dangers they pose to anyone in the vicinity show a total disregard for public safety. “There is no benefit to the general public from this activity and every motorist using laundered or duty-rebated diesel as a road fuel, runs the risk of destroying their engine and having their vehicles seized. So filling up with fuel that is being sold at a cheap price could in fact cost more in the long run.” A man was arrested but was later released on bail.

Same-sex Couples have their Rights Downgraded With the commencement of the Civil Partnership Act 2010, Thursday 13th January saw the Irish State recognise civil marriages and civil partnerships of same-sex couples from certain other jurisdictions. NOISE asserts that while same-sex couples in a foreign civil marriage or civil partnership enjoy full parity of rights with their heterosexual counterparts in many of those jurisdictions, their relationship status will be downgraded to the lesser rights available under an Irish Civil Partnership, removing any rights that LGBT parents and their children may have formally had. Noise organiser Max Krzyzanowski says, ‘It is outrageous that a couple from Spain, for example, who enjoys all the rights of Civil Marriage – including full parental rights – will have essential rights rendered null and void the minute they set foot on Irish soil. In a Europe of equals and an Ireland of equals this should not be acceptable.’ NOISE demands an end to this segregated system of relationship recognition and calls on the Irish Government to follow the egalitarian example of Spain, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Argentina, Portugal, Nepal, Mexico, Iceland,The Netherlands and Belgium and open up the choice of full civil marriage rights to all citizens.
Donegal priest to ban secular music at ceremonies
A Co Donegal priest has banned all secular music during religious ceremonies from his church. He has also warned that he would expel musicians and photographers who did not consult with him in advance. A church spokesman said the National Secretariat for Liturgy issued guidelines on church music. it was therefore up to each individual diocese to be more specific in how it applied them. “Churches are sacred places of worship and their dignity and sacredness have to be respected,” he said. In its guidelines on music for funeral rites, the secretariat says that secular music should not replace the sacred music which was part of the rite. The issue emerged after Buncrana Parish Priest Fr John Walsh, in the Derry diocese, banned all secular music during religious ceremonies. He added that he won’t tolerate wedding photographers and videographers “standing in front” of him as he officiates. “Photographers and video recordists can be a bit enthusiastic about where they position themselves, but I don’t want them standing in front of me when I’m marrying people,” he said. Fr Walsh said it was “negotiable” whether or not he would allow non-religious music be played after a ceremony concludes and a wedding couple, or funeral cortege, is leaving the chapel. He said photographers and videographers had to prearrange with him where they could stand. “I’ll be sending for them anyway if I see them in the gallery before a wedding and they haven’t come to see me first. Musicians who don’t co-operate will not be welcome to perform in Buncrana (churches) anymore so, it’s up to them to liaise with me,” he added.

Warming up the body for Exercise
EXERCISE is crucial for a health body and after Christmas, it is the most common New Year's Resolution, so to avoid failing on the first hurdle, get your mind into gear and by this time next year, you could be fitter, healthier and slimmer too! The problem that many people encounter is that they race into a sport or a gym, but do not warm up the body and as a result, they end up burning out pretty quickly or give up quickly as it seems like very strenuous on the body. Stretches should be done 5 minutes before aerobic exercise. Stretching allows the body to warm up before engaging in heavy exercise. It also reduces muscle tension as well as helping the body relieve stress, anxiety and fatigue. It can improve circulation and enhance flexibility of the body, especially the joints. These stretches can be done just minutes before you engage in an aerobic form of exercise and they can be done from the comfort of your own home too! Leg stretches: Lie flat on your back. Use both hands to bring your knee up to your chest. Hold

Lie on your side on a flat surface. Lift each leg slowly up into the air, as high as you can go until you feel mild tension. Do not over stretch, as you will cause damage to the muscle. Turn and repeat action using the other leg. Repeat this process twenty times for each leg. Bicep - arm stretches : Extend your arm straight out to the side with your thumb towards the ceiling. Your arm should be parallel to the floor. Remember to keep your hand open. Place the palm of your hand on something stationary, like a doorway or a pole. Stand with your feet placed shoulder width apart. Rotate your upper body away from your extended arm without moving your feet. Rotate slowly and don't let your arm fall. Stop when you feel a stretch in your bicep. Hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds. Repeat this stretch on your other arm. Tricep - arm stretches: Extend your arm straight out in front of you with your palm facing the ceiling. Keep your upper arm extended while bringing your hand back to touch your shoulder. this position, for a minimum of 30 seconds. Switch arms and repeat this stretch. Stretch shoulder muscles: Extend you arm straight out to your side with your thumb towards the ceiling. Lower your arm, so that your hand is level with the top of your abdomen. Find a doorway or another stationary object and place the palm of your hand on it. Rotate your upper body until you feel a stretch through your upper arm and shoulder. Hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds. Rest before the next stretch. Reach across your body to just above your hip. Take your other arm and, at the elbow, gently pull your stretching arm. Do not pull your elbow up or down, but across your torso as if drawing a line that is parallel to the floor. Hold this position for 30 seconds, resting a few seconds before the next stretch. Reach across your chest and place your hand on your opposite shoulder. If you cannot reach your other shoulder, go as far as you can without serious discomfort. Use your other arm and gently pull the elbow on your stretching arm towards the shoulder your grabbed with your hand. Maintain the stretch for at least 30 seconds, and then repeat these stretches on the other shoulder. Chest stretches: The chest, like the neck, is also a common area for tension build-up. Consequently, the chest muscles can become tight and inflexible, which can cause problems in your posture. Thus, it is important to stretch your chest.

MY WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY “The toughest part of a diet isn't watching what you eat. It's watching what other people eat”
M
y name is Seamus and I am 38 years old. I plan on making this column my new home away from home. I am writing this so I have somewhere to go to record my progress as I try to lose weight. And hopefully in the process I might be able to help someone else lose unwanted weight. I haven't been over weight my whole life. It kind of snuck up on me over the past 10 years. There was a time in my life when I received my daily intake from fast food restaurants. I was in a sales position and on the road most of the time. I would have the burger, fries and coke combo from a different fast food joint every day. I was much younger then and blessed with a decent metabolism so I did not see much negative effect from all of the unhealthy eating. And only this year have I realised that I am gone past the stage where I can just walk into a department store and pick up a shirt or trouser just because I like the design or colour. I have to make do with what they have in my size which is normally two to three choices. The end result is I hate going shopping because it only makes me feel crap. I have given Kathryn and Liz my word that I will give NuTron Advanced my 100% till June 1st and see where it brings us. I must say I’m feeling very positive and excited and for once I believe it will work and I will reach my goal of 15 stone. Each fortnight I will report on how I’m doing and hopefully all fingers crossed I might motivate one of you to shed those unwanted pounds too.

What is Nutron Advanced?
Nutron Advanced uses the Alcat test to identify reactions to over 200 foods, chemicals and other substances associated with inflammation that are linked to chronic health problems like migraines, aching joints, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, eczema, hyperactivity/ADD, asthma and even obesity. Their goal is to provide clients with accurate, timely and dependable test results and nutritional support services. It is not so much a diet but a list of foods that do and don’t agree with a person. To find out what foods do and don’t agree with
you a simple blood test was carried out on me in their clinic in Castlebar. After ten days I went back to Liz O Malley for the results and she had a chart which identified which foods I had a mild intolerance to, a moderate intolerance to and a severe intolerance to. Then there is a green list which is completely ok for me to stick to. See attached chart. The test also showed up that there was a Candida Albicans in my system. So basically the whole idea is eat the food that agrees with your system and stay away from ones that can make you bloated and tired.

Cause of eczema An allergy to a certain kind of food can often be one explanation for eczema, especially in children and babies. Cow's milk, hen's eggs and peanuts are the foods most likely to exacerbate infantile eczema. House dust mites tend to aggravate eczema in older children and adults. Pet dander exposure, such as to cats, dogs and other furry animals, may play a role as certain bacteria on pet dander may cause the severe outbreak. Contact dermatitis This condition affects mainly adults. It occurs on skin contact with a chemical substance and takes 24 hours to develop. There are two types of contact dermatitis: Allergic contact dermatitis, which is where the skin becomes sensitized to something over a period of time and
allergic reaction occurs on reexposure. The other is irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the skin comes in contact with something that strips away its natural oils and makes the skin red, dry, cracked and itchy. The most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis are nickel in jewellery, rubber and building materials such as cement and solvents and ingredients found in cosmetics, hair dyes and perfumes. While the most common causes of irritant contact dermatitis include; soaps, detergents, shampoos and disinfectants. Symptoms In mild cases, eczema is nothing more than a slightly irritating patch of sore skin, but in severe cases extensive areas of skin may become inflamed and unbearably itchy. Some people with these symptoms develop problems such as depression with low self-esteem, and have difficulty coping at school or work. People with eczema are also more prone to herpes, skin fungal and wart infections. Prevention If you have contact dermatitis, you must try to identify the cause so you can avoid it. Patch
testing with various chemicals can help in this. If you have atopic eczema, you may be able to find out what you're allergic to by having special skin-prick tests for environmental and food allergens. Once an allergen has been identified, practical steps can be taken to avoid it. Completely avoid the substance that triggers the eczematous rash. Treatment People with atopic eczema should bath regularly using liberal amounts of emollients (moisturising creams, ointments, lotions and bath oils) to soften and hydrate the skin. Ointments work much better than creams on dry eczematous skin, but are greasy. Avoid perfumed moisturisers and those with added lanolin. Outbreaks of eczema should be treated with adequate amounts of steroid ointments to reduce skin inflammation. These will only make the eczema better if used continuously for five to seven days. Don't be afraid to use steroid ointments - they'll clear the eczema so moisturiser can continue to protect the skin. Moisturisers and creams alone won't settle active eczema. You may be given antihista-

Treating Eczema ATOPIC dermatitis or eczema as it is more commonly known affects people with dry and rough skin and may be caused by a variety of allergens. It often starts in early childhood, around three months of age, and tends to run in 'atopic' families. An estimated one in twelve adults and one in five school-age children have eczema.

mine medication to make your skin less itchy. This should also help you to sleep better at night by reducing itching. In severe atopic eczema, you may be given a short course of oral steroid tablets to get the inflammation under control. Eczema sufferers should avoid sports that make you sweat a lot and try at all costs not to stress, as it can make eczema worse. 'Wet wrapping' is sometimes used overnight, particularly on children, if emollients and steroid creams alone are not effective. The treatment involves applying wet tubular bandages over emollients and steroid creams to aid their absorption. It also helps to relieve itching and prevent scratching. Foods Reducing intake of histaminecontaining foods, such as tomato, berries, strong cheese, chocolate, Marmite and darkmeat fish, may reduce itching and redness. There's mounting evidence that supplementing probiotic 'good bacteria' in a child's early diet will reduce the risks of developing eczema. Adding omega-3 essential oils to the diet may also be beneficial.

Word Puzzle!
Did you know?
Here is a game that you can play to test your skill. This game will present you with a matrix filled with letters. The objective is to form words by concatenating adjacent letters. Letters that are to the left, right, on top, bottom, or on a diagonal to each other are all acceptable.
Yes and No The reason why we nod our heads for “yes” and shake it for “no” was first explained by Charles Darwin. He related the gestures to a baby’s nursing habits. The nod, the forward head motion, is the breast-seeking pattern. Shaking the head from side to side – gesturing “no” – is a breast-rejecting motion. This is confirmed by the fact that a baby born deaf and blind will nod for yes and shake its head for no.

Hold your breath Try holding your breath. After a minute you will have used up most of the oxygen stored in your body and carbon dioxide will build up, triggering senses in your diaphragm to start breathing. You will experience an overwhelming urge to gulp some air, something which you will not be able to resist. On average, people can hold their breath for one minute, maybe two. The world record, however, is 11 minutes 35 seconds, set on June 8, 2009 by Stéphane Mifsud. In that time, even if you held your breath for a minute, you would have had to breathe 170 times because you breath 23,000 times a day! Stéphane Mifsud‘s amazing feat is the Static apnea record as established by the International Association for the Development of Free Diving. Inhalation of pure oxygen before the diving attempt is not allowed, which the Guinness World Record association does allow. They report the record for holding breath at 20 minutes 10 seconds, set on April 1, 2010 by Stig Severinsen. Also an amazing feat.

Free diving Scientists used to believe that lungs would collapse at 164 ft (50m). At depths of 328 ft (100m), the underwater pressure could shrink lungs to the size of an egg, it was thought. After all, water is 800 times thicker than air and weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon (1kg per liter). Even today, advanced scuba divers have a limit of 130 ft (40m). But in 1961 Sicilian Enzo Maiorca descended to 177 ft (54m) without breathing equipment. The first person to free-dive (with assistance but no breathing equipment) to 100m (328 ft) was Jacques Mayol, in 1976. On December 13, 2010, New Zealander William Trubridge became the first person to reach a depth of 100m without any assistance of any kind, even without fins. Legendary free-diver Italian Umberto Pellizzari, who can hold his breath for more than 6 minutes, was the first to free-dive to 150m (492 ft), in October 1999. In 2007, current record holder Herbert Nitsch reached an astounding 214m (702 ft). Now, that should take your breath away!

Comparing today with 100 years ago How times have changed! 100 years ago there were less than 20,000 motorcars in the whole world, a lot of them being electric cars. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph (16km/h).The Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world, at 1063 ft (324 metres). Most women washed their hair only once a month using egg yolks for shampoo. Eggs cost about 10 cents per dozen. Cannabis and heroin were available over the counter at corner drugstores. And pneumonia and influenza were the leading causes of death. In 1910, the population of the United States was 92 million and the world population was 1.7 billion people. Today, there are more cars manufactured than their is demand for it.There are about 1 billion cars and light trucks on the road, half of them in the United States. The maximum speed limit in most cities is 30 mph, yet the traffic is so congested that the average speed is just over 10 mph.The tallest building is the Burj Dubai, at 2,640 ft (800 metres). Women wash their hair on average once a week – using any of thousands of products. Eggs cost $2 per dozen on average. Cannabis is not available over the counter – bar a few countries – and is very expensive. And the leading causes of death are heart attacks, cancers, strokes, and motorcar accidents. Today, the population of the United States numbers 300 million and almost 7 billion roam the earth.

As Under Pressure was the track that really catapulted the boys to fame it seemed only fitting to release the song as their first single.” Tickets are available on www.ticketmaster.ie as well as from the Royal Theatre Box Office on 0818 300 000.Tickets are priced from 27.50 incl. booking fee, other service charges may apply. Fresh from a 14th sell out year at the Edinburgh festival Jason Byrne takes his fringe show ‘Jason Byrne 2010’(Ok we know that doesn't make sense except he started at the comedy Festival in October and is finishing with this gig) to all his favourite Irish venues. Jason Byrne is probably the most exciting live stand up performer in the world today. I know, sounds like some overstated press drivel but as anyone who has seen him live will testify, it isn’t. Jason is also the biggest selling comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe festival ... ever! Now that just sounds like a lie ... but it isn’t. Such is Jason’s popularity in Australia that next year he may have to spend at least 3 months there, I only tell you this because this tour may be your only chance to see him in Ireland for quite some time. Because apart from the rest of the world wanting him for all their very own, this autumn alone he will be working on a 5th series of ‘Anonymous’ (RTE2), The Wildside (BBC1), a third series of ‘The Jason Byrne Show’ (BBC Radio 2) and a new radio sitcom ‘Father Figure’ (BBC Radio 2). Jason will be playing the Roisin Dubh in Galway on Thursday 27th January at 8pm. Tickets are priced at 18. Contact the box office via www.roisindubh.net
