Many who are waiting to get paid at the end of the month are in for a nasty shock. After a grim January for many, there won’t be much relief. While budget 2011 abolished the health levy and income levy they have been replaced by a new Universal Social Charge. All workers are required to pay this tax if their annual income is more than €4004 euro, or €77 a week, meaning it applies to nearly all workers. For people with income of €4005 or more the rates will be two per cent on all income up to €10,036, four per cent on earnings between €10,037 and €16,016 and seven per cent on any income over €16,016.
