RADERS and financial advice agencies are warning people throughout the North West to steer clear of illegal lenders this Christmas. When budgets are traditionally stretched on seasonal gifts, food and celebrations, those who need to bridge a gap in their finances are urged to think carefully about where they go to borrow money. It has become a familiar sight in housing estates across the region to see moneylenders calling on weekend evenings to collect their dues. Illegal and doorstep lenders often target people who would otherwise be unable to obtain credit from High Street lenders – but their interest rates can be extortionately high, and failure to meet repayments can result in much higher financial penalties, harassment for repayments; pressure into taking out a bigger loan to cover the debt, and the threat of violence. With some of these lenders a loan of €500 can result in repayments of up to €1,200 for borrowers. Even legal operators can sometimes charge exorbitant rates. It is understood many people will meet their moneylenders near the Post Office to collect their children's allowance book. After collecting the payment at the post office, the moneylender is handed back the book and cash by the borrower.
According to a survey of victims of loan sharks 20 per cent of victims took out their loans to give them extra money for Christmas. A spokesperson from the Irish League of Credit Unions said: “We all want to enjoy the festive season, but I would urge local residents to think twice before borrowing money from illegal lenders. It might appear that they can get you out of a fix, but you could find yourself in a much bigger financial problem if you’re not careful”. Instead, you can get good financial advice from MABS or your local Credit Union office, who now fear that lending restrictions imposed on them early this year may only drive more hardpressed people into the hands of illegal operators. Advice on legitimate borrowing, especially for those who have a poor credit status, is available from the nearest MABS outlet or Credit Union office. While the St. Vincent de Paul organisation is severely stretched at present, they have an open door for anybody in financial distress and will do their best to help. Anybody with evidence or suspicion of illegal moneylending should contact the Gardai or the National Consumer Agency. Only the Gardai can take action against such loan sharks, but the Consumer Agency can provide valuable advice on the legitimacy of such operations.

I
?
t was a weekend of excitement for Connacht Rugby as the team travelled to London to play their first ever game in the Heineken European Cup, Meanwhile back in Galway the Supporters who stayed at home were simultaneously launching the new supporters club website. The website was developed by Michael Monaghan of Liskillen Media who “aimed to bring the excitement of supporting Connacht to a whole new level and a new audience”, The site had a very busy weekend with over 11,000 hits from all around the world. Dennis Laffey PRO said “The stats go to show the huge fan base the club has, from forums for our older members to online games for the younger members” The Supporters Club was founded at the start of the season and the new website is just one of the many plans for the future. The Event was held in Busker Browns in Galway, Buskers are the main sponsors of the new supporters club and pulled out all the stops in providing the home based fans a night to remember. For more details of upcoming events & how to get involved check out www.connachtclan.com Back to the match itself:With the biggest screen in Galway, Busker's proved to be a great spot as in front of a packed venue Connacht put on a display that left many in the crowd with a hoarse voice afterwards. The crowd had great fun, with

CLUBS NIGHT The Connacht Clan are organising a 'Clubs Night' for the Connacht vs Edinburgh game in February next year. This will be a fun-filled celebration of the clubs scene in Connacht, and it is hoped that all clubs within the province will participate. The aim is to bring as many people from each club (including non members from that area) for a special night and it is hoped that this will become an annual event in the rugby
calendar. For an amazing price of just €25, one will get the match ticket and a bus ticket for the return trip. On the night itself, it is envisaged that there will be significant prizes (including lump sum cash prizes for clubs), fun filled games for the clubs at half time and also raffle draws for all participants. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket please contact either Patrick Carr (087-0574023) at pcarr@pro-adjust.com or Fergus Farrell (0876874594) at info@farrelltravel.ie .

Darren has competed in the European Transplant and Dialysis Games and at the World Transplant Games, winning medals in various events. This February, after a wait of nine years, he received a kidney transplant. While a dialysis patient he felt the best way to help those with kidney disease and on dialysis was to promote donor awareness to schools around the county. This was his project with the Westport Lions. Since then he has given talks at conferences in Prague, Munich, Birmingham, Dublin and elsewhere. He also gave a presentation to the EU Parliament in Strasburg on “Living with Kidney Taoiseach Enda Kenny in a jovial mood when he launched Disease”. “Pride of the Lions” in Castlebar last week. Mayo will come alive with the sound of choral music at the end of May, 2012. Choirs from home and abroad will descend on Mayo. Festival Chairman Edward Horkan explained that the event is open to competing and non-competing choirs and it was hoped to attract as many overseas choirs as possible. The latter should have easy access through Ireland West International Airport in Knock. Local choirs will join with visiting choirs at the various concert venues, local theatres and schools and the GMIT Regional College.Visiting choirs will be provided with tours of Mayo, interacting with local choirs. There will be added competitions for mixed choirs from Ireland and for Barbershop groups. The closing date for entry is 31st January 2012 and each competition is limited to 15 participating choirs. Check out www.mayochoral.com and get prepared for a fantastic four-day festival.

AN Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, was in his home town of Castlebar last week to launch “Pride of the Lions”, the first edition of a colourful 40-page publication which will highlight the work of 116 Lions Club spread throughout Ireland. He also took the opportunity to launch the website of the Mayo International Choral Festival ,which takes place throughout the county from 24th to 28th May, 2012. Launching the magazine Mr. Kenny said he has never before experienced so many world leaders worried and uncertain about the future. He said the problems in Greece and Italy had to be resolved soon if Europe was to move forward. It is in these difficult and uncertain times, when communities and individuals are suffering, and states’ budgets are constrained, that the need for supporting projects from organisations like the Lions is greater. Mr. Kenny said he was aware of the service by the provided Lions . . . definitely ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Westport Lion Darren Cawley, a young man from Knockrooskey, outside Westport, on haemodialysis who had been for a num benefits he had obber of years, outlined the tained from being a member of a Lions Club.

ONE of the most exhilarating adventures for any person, young or old, is to exit an aircraft and fall through the air – to skydive. It’s not so difficult, all you have to do is exit the aircraft; gravity does the rest! There are two types of skydive, a Tandem and a Solo. With the Tandem the newcomer is firmly attached to a highly experienced Tandem Instructor and both student and Tandem Instructor leave the aircraft together at 10,000 ft – nearly two miles high. The Tandem Instructor does most of the work, including opening the main parachute after 25 seconds of freefall, when you reach a speed of almost 200 Kilometres an hour. After the opening of the main parachute the student may, if he or she wishes, help to steer the large parachute, made for two people, to the landing area. The training for Tandem takes about one hour, including paperwork. The Solo skydive is, as the name implies,

Lynda Devenney Exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre “Concrete Consciousness”, an exhibition by artist Lynda Devenney, is currently running at the Arts Centre in Ballina. Officially opened by Vincent Coleman, MRIAI, local architect, on Thursday, 3rd November, it continues until 26th November. Admission is free. The presentation explores the idea of the “communal space, employing installation, video and projection. In the video work “Pedestrian” the viewer is navigated through the space by the tracking movement of walkways of a Brutalist council housing estate in London, designed in the late
‘60s by Alison and Peter Smithson. It was developed as an example of the “streets in the sky” concept, social housing characterised by broad aerial walkways. The artist considers what the building has become and their vision for social interaction and asks the viewer to question how we negotiate social space. Lynda Devenney has a Master of Arts from the National College of Art and Design and has taken part in many group shows. Recent awards include the Visual Arts Bursary from the Arts Council in 2011 and 2010.

MEMBERS of IT Sligo’s Team Hermes, winners of this year’s Microsoft Imagine Cup, arrived in Brussels las week for a one day visit to the European Institutions to showcase their winning solution. The visit was facilitated by MEP Pat the Pope Gallagher. During their visit the students met with Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas and the Irish Ambassador. The team were also brought on a tour of the European Parliament and visited Microsoft’s European Cloud and Interoperability Centre in Brussels. Speaking from Brussels, MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher, said: “I am delighted to facilitate the visit of the winners of the Microsoft Imagine Cup to the European Institutions. The four students from IT Sligo competed against 350,000 students from 183 countries to win one of the most prestigious student technology awards in the world. This was a great achievement for them personally and for IT Sligo.” “They deserve full recognition for their innovative work. The purpose of the Microsoft Imagine Cup is to find solutions to real world problems. In this context, I am delighted that the EU Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas was able to meet with them to discuss their new black box technology for cars which is capable of recording details of road crashes and generally monitoring driving behaviour.” The IT Sligo students entered the Imagine Cup as Team Hermes. They won the Irish round of the Microsoft Imagine Cup back in April and then competed in the global finals in New York in July. At the global finals they won the top prize and were named the winners in the Software Design competition of the Microsoft Imagine Cup. Speaking about the IT Sligo students, Paul
Rellis, Microsoft Ireland said: “Each year the Microsoft Imagine Cup shines a light on incredible innovative students around the world and this year we were delighted that the winning team for this year’s competition came from Ireland. It’s a great sign of the talent that is being developed in Irish Universities in the technology sector. There has been great interest in the student’s project and this trip to Brussels is one of a number of key meetings which the team has had since winning. We’re looking forward to seeing how the project develops.” The team designed a device that plugs into a car and monitors dangerous driving behavior and road conditions, providing instant feedback to both the driver and the car owner. The team’s solution uses embedded technology,Windows Phone 7, Bing Maps and the Windows Azure cloud computing platform to change driving habits and reduce road deaths, which impacts a significant number of young lives each year. With its victory, the team won $25,000 (U.S.). “Our success at the Microsoft Imagine Cup wasn’t just a win for Ireland, it was a win for Europe and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to come to Brussels to meet with European representatives like the European Commissioner for Transport, Siim Kallas. The high incidence of death by road accidents isn’t just an Irish issue, it’s a problem all over Europe, and this is a fantastic opportunity for us to share our ideas on how road safety can be improved with top European policy makers ,” Calum Cawley, member of Team Hermes said. The 2012 Microsoft Imagine Cup Competition is now open for entries and further information can be seen on www.imaginecup.com.

One woman proudly recalled her memories of 4am Mornings as she attempted to soothe her Baby Monkey back to sleep. Others spend extortionate sums of money dressing their pet monkeys, ensuring they have the latest in designer attire while the arranged “MonkeyMum” mornings provide many of the owners with their only weekly outing. The purchase of top class baby buggies and sleeping cots suggests that these owners now often struggle to distance themselves from fantasy as they attempt to exist in denial that their “baby” is in fact a wild animal. The monkeys’ life-span is also affected considerably. In the wild they live on average 30years however the animals which exist in such a sheltered environment, often in stifling domestic comfort, survive usually a mere eight years. Surely in today’s 21st century, in which equality is our main objective it is grossly unfair that as the master species we, humans are subjecting our closest relatives in the Animal Kingdom to such injustice? Previously an agricultural essential, the dog has now become for many the dominant family member. A family friend recently summarised this transformation as she explained that “Of course I can’t sit in that chair Silly, where would Max sit then?” As a minute Scottish terrier, I had expected that the comfortable padded basket in the corner of the room would have provided adequate seating space for the lovable Max. Apparently not, how silly of me! The role of animals in today’s society is undeniably an important one. However the recent publication of a renowned Discount Stores’ Winter edition catalogue in which over thirty pages were dedicated to “Pet Fashion” cemented my belief that although it is important that we treat them with respect and care at all times, it is equally vital that we recognize them as what they really are- ANIMALS (whether diamond clad or not!)

Sadly, the reality is often very different. In dealing with a claim of any size, the Insurance Company will appoint a LOSS ADJUSTER or representative. He is ENGAGED and PAID by the Insurance Company. There are always grey areas Claims assessing is not an exact science and there are many instances where there is no absolute answer to the way a claim for a particular item should be settled. Human nature being what it is, the Loss Adjuster is likely to lean towards his principals, the Insurance Company. LOSS ASSESSORS charge a fee agreed with you in advance, for the work undertaken ON YOUR BEHALF
When should I appoint my Loss Assessor? The way a claim is prepared and presented if every bit as important as the way in which it is negotiated and settled. You therefore need to appoint a LOSS ASSESSOR as soon as you realise that you have a claim. DON’T WAIT until things start to go wrong – when the Insurance Company’s LOSS ADJUSTER tells you that you are not entitled to claim for something which you were convinced forms part of your claim – or when the LOSS ADJUSTER tries to reduce the amount you are claiming. Plea on cyberbully victims' plight
technology news & science
How the moon got its magnetism MORE than a third of young people have been affected by cyberbullying, but many do not tell anyone, research suggests. The new study also reveals fears among youngsters that cyberbullying - the bullying of another person through technology - will continue to rise. Research commissioned by the Diana Award children's organisation found that 38% of young people had been victims of, or knew someone who had been a victim of, cyberbullying. Of these, 39% said they had experienced cyberbullying once or twice. Maggie Turner, chief executive of the Diana Award, said the report - based on surveys of 1,512 children aged 12 to 16 across England - shows that more needs to be done to protect young people. The findings show that of those who have seen or experienced cyberbullying, more than one in four (28%) had never told anyone about it and more than half (53%) did not save any evidence of cyberbullying. The study, carried out to mark Anti-bullying Week which runs from November 14-18, also looked at the types of cyberbullying experienced by young people, and reveals concerns that the problem is increasing. One in four (26%) of those affected by cyberbullying said this had been in the form of abusive emails, making it the most commonly used method. This was followed by abusive texts (24%) and prank and silent phone calls (19%). Asked whether cyberbullying is increasing or decreasing, the majority, 78% in total, said they thought it was on the rise. However the problem seems to be more common outside the school gates. Half of those questioned felt that cyberbullying occurred outside school, rather than inside, with a similar proportion (56%) saying it is experienced at home. Ms Turner said: "This report clearly identifies the shocking and increasing numbers of young people affected by cyber-bullying. These findings plainly evidence that funding and improved safeguards are still needed to better protect our children in society." The study showed that the highest proportion of those reporting cyberbullying told a friend or peer mentor (28%), she added. "Therefore proving that peer-led programmes, such as the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Programme, would provide the most appropriate vehicle of preventing and supporting young victims of bullying."
External forces beating up the ancient moon may explain how it once maintained a magnetic field for more than 400 million years — longer than scientists had thought such a small object could be magnetized. Either wobbly rotation produced by Earth’s gravitational tug or asteroids smacking into the lunar surface may have triggered enough turbulence in the moon’s molten core to generate a long-lasting magnetic field, report two teams of scientists in the Nov. 10 Nature. “This has been a very fundamental question for 40 years,” says study author Christina Dwyer, a graduate student at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Though absent today, this ancient field is recorded in rocks retrieved from the moon’s surface and in magnetized patches of crust spied by orbiting spacecraft. “The moon was magnetized. We don’t know how.” Normally, heat escaping from a planet’s interior causes fluid in the core to slosh around, creating a magnetic field. But this explanation doesn’t work for the moon, which would have cooled off too quickly for the sloshing to be maintained. Instead, each research team points to a different spoon that would have mechanically stirred the early moon’s innards to create magnetism. Dwyer’s team suggests that a slight, Earth-driven wobble in the moon’s axis of rotation mixed the liquid core. “The Earth is tugging on the moon and that tug — even though it’s quite small — keeps the moon wobbling,” says planetary scien-
tist Francis Nimmo of UC Santa Cruz. The wobble is greater when the moon is closer to Earth. As the moon moves farther away — as it has, over the last four billion years or so — the wobble decreases. The magnetic field decreases, too, disappearing completely around 2.7 billion years ago, the team reports. If this model is right, says Nimmo, “younger [lunar] rocks ought to be magnetized, but they ought to be magnetized less strongly than older rocks.” The second team proposes that large asteroids smacking into the moon messed up its rotation rate and perturbed the liquid core. Six large, ancient lunar impact basins with magnetized rocks at their centers support this idea, says study author and fluid dynamicist Michael Le Bars of the French national research agency and the University of Aix-Marseille. “A reasonably large impact can generate a magnetic field for about 10,000 years,” he says. If so, then lunar rocks might show spike after spike of magnetism as impacts pummeled the early moon. Though different, the two theories are not mutually exclusive and together comprise “a major,
major advance in our understanding,” says Benjamin Weiss, a planetary scientist at MIT. Studying the magnetic record preserved in lunar rocks would be a good way to test the theories, he notes, since tracing magnetic intensities over time should produce a pattern that might match one or both of the predictions. Right now, scientists are limited to working with the lunar rocks already on Earth — some of which have already revealed magnetic fields, though the measurements are decades old. “It would be nice if somebody goes back and redoes those measurements with the modern techniques,” Nimmo says. Ian Garrick-Bethell, a planetary scientist at UC Santa Cruz, says both papers are “clever and elegant,” but that more mathematical simulations need to be done. “They’ve done their homework,” he says. “But some of the detailed mechanics may not entirely be understood.”
No more Flash on mobile browsers
ADOBE Systems is pulling its Flash software for web video and games from the browsers of mobile devices, though Flash will still work on mobile apps and on the web browsers of regular computers. The move is a win for Apple, which has famously banned Flash from working on the iPhone and the iPad. Adobe said, however, that it is about giving
people what they want. "I wouldn't say we lost to Apple. I'd say we listened to customers," Adobe's chief financial officer, Mark Garrett, said in an interview at the company's meeting with analysts in New York. The popularity of Apple's mobile devices and its steadfast opposition to Flash has pushed into the public eye what has been a largely technical conversation about the behind-the-scenes workings of web displays and apps. In April 2010, Apple founder Steve Jobs wrote a lengthy diatribe criticising Flash for being too buggy, battery-draining and PC-focused to work on the iPhone and the iPad. It was an explanation of the company's longstanding ban of the technology from its mobile operating systems. "Flash was created during the PC era - for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is
about low-power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards - all areas where Flash falls short," Mr Jobs wrote. In a blog post, an Adobe vice president, Danny Winokur, said the company would increase investment in HTML5, the latest version of the programming standard that websites are built on. "HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively," he wrote. "This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms." Less than two months ago, Mr Winokur, who serves as vice president and general manager of interactive development, told The Associated Press that Adobe was equally focused on both Flash and HTML5. But even with today's retreat, Adobe stressed that the technology is not going away, and will continue to be available on PCs and on mobile apps.

The beautiful drain
HERE is one of those local derby soccer matches fought out at the bottom of the table - the water table, that is. Because drought-stricken southern Croatia is now so parched, they were able to play football on the bed of a local lake that would normally contain millions of gallons of reservoir water. Two teams from nearby town Imotski carved out a makeshift pitch in the dust at Modro Jezero (The Blue Lake), and fans used the reservoir observation platforms as grandstands. "It was pretty safe to assume this was one match where rain would not stop play," said one supporter. The match on the pitch that is normally between 150 and 90 metres underwater ended with a 4-4 draw between Imotski Vilenjaci (The Imotski Bandits) and Vukodlaci (The Wolves).

US government says there's no sign of aliens - at least not yet! The US government has said it has no evidence that aliens exist (yet) after a petition asking whether there was proof of extra terrestrials was submitted on its website.
T
he White House was forced to answer the question after more than 5,000 people signed a petition. This triggered a feature on the White House website that allows members of the public to submit petitions, which must be answered if a certain amount of people sign. In a written statement responding to the question, Phil Larson of the White House office of science and technology policy said the US government had no proof there were aliens or any other life forms outside Earth. He also said the government had never been contacted by an extraterrestrial presence. 'In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public's eye,' Mr Larson wrote. Even though he denied there was a government cover-up regarding aliens, Mr Larson did admit there could be extraterrestrials living on another planet.
He said: 'Many scientists and mathematicians have come to the conclusion that the odds are pretty high that somewhere among the
trillions and trillions of stars in the universe there is a planet other than ours that is home to life.' The White House has also ad-
dressed other issues through its online forum, including gay marriage, the legalisation of marijuana and student loan debt.
Pregnant woman develops bizarre craving for roadkill Artist and taxidermist Alison Brierley has found herself craving feasts of roadkill as a result of her pregnancy THE custom-designed two-wheeler, which is almost ten feet in length, can hold up to 30 samples, which are stored in a special vacuum container cooled with liquid nitrogen. The motorised bike, which features an oversized model of a sperm cell, has been developed to quickly and efficiently move donated sperm, and is being used by the Seattle Sperm Lab to service nearby reproductive centres and fertility clinics. 'It's getting a lot of looks. People are stopping. They don't quite understand what's going on,' said Gary Olsem of Seattle Sperm Bank. Olsem says the bike is not only greenfriendly, but also helps to raise awareness about the need for sperm donation. 'It is not only cutting CO2, but I think it’s really getting the word out about the need for sperm donors,' he said. 'At first, people are shocked and surprised, but then they tell us what a great idea it is.' The first Sperm Bike was used by Seattle Sperm Bank's sibling company, the European Sperm Bank, in Copenhagen.
Alison Brierley has eaten foxes, deer, pheasants, rabbits and pigeon
www.brusnaenergysolutions.com
THE 42-year-old has been eating an array of animals killed along her local roads in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Brierley often used her roadkill to make jewellery from their hides, but now the mum-to-be has gone full throttle with her new diet. 'Usually I eat really healthily but now I'm pregnant I get strong cravings for roadkill,' explained Brierley. 'It's more gamey than other meat and I love the taste. I also don't have to feel guilty about eating it because I know it's had a completely free range and natural life.' Ms Brierley has eaten hare, deer, pigeon, rabbit and owls, with pheasant being the most prevalent of her dishes. 'I would like to try fox and badger but they're never in good enough condition to eat; although I have used them for my artwork.’ said Brierley. The 42-year-old admitted she has even hosted roadkill dinner parties for friends. 'They trust me and they know I'm a good cook so I think they love it. I get the best meat from friends who ring me up to tell me about a kill they've spotted on their way to work,' she added. Eating fresh roadkill is something close to Brierley's heart as she believes in an alternative food lifestyle. ‘One of the big reasons for being public about this is that I want to raise awareness about where food actually comes from’, said Alison. ‘Some people are so blasé about picking their food off a supermarket shelf without giving a thought to how it lived or how it was killed.’

Stand Up for Your Health
A
re you sitting down? Perfect. Please take a moment to check in with your body. Is your rear kind of numb? Do the backs of your thighs feel smushed? Is your lower back all crunched? This is your body crying out for help! Really. A wave of new research indicates that sitting all day is actively damaging your health. By forcing a body designed for movement to hold a crushingly immobile position, sitting strains muscles, slows your metabolism, increases your risk of heart disease, and even shortens your life span. "Sitting is a health hazard on the order of smoking," says Marc Hamilton, PhD, a microbiologist at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
I was once like you: I sat 10 to 11 hours a day. And then, in 2008, I was researching an article about newfangled chairs and learned that few of the designers actually sat on chairs because of the ill effects on their health. Tired of that glommed-up, dull feeling I got at my desk, I shoved my chair to the side and tried a standing desk. Over the next six months, I slowly rid my home of chairs. I couldn't believe how my body responded. My back pain disappeared, along with my poor posture. And 15 pounds nearly fell off my frame. Need more incentives? Here's why over-sitting must—and can—be stopped. Sitting makes you fat When you park your butt in a chair, your

metabolism comes to a screeching halt. It's all because of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which resides in the blood vessels of your muscles. "Lipoprotein lipase captures fat in the blood and incinerates it," says Hamilton. When you're standing, the postural muscles that support your weight, mostly in your legs, release the enzyme, which goes to work burning fat. But when you're sitting still, and not shifting every 30 to 90 seconds as the body does naturally, "the fat stays in the arteries, and can be stored in adipose tissue—also known as body fat," Hamilton explains. A typical day of sitting lowers lipoprotein lipase activity by 90 to 95% (in animals), which is why when Hamilton takes blood samples of his human subjects while they're sitting and eating, the plasma—ideally clear—is white and chunky, filled with fat, the sign of a sluggish metabolism. Worse yet, experts say that 60 to 90 minutes of daily exercise may not counteract the effects of sitting all day. In fact, Hamilton says, the biochemical reactions slowed by sitting are completely different from the ones that are activated by your daily workout. The biggest difference between thin and fat people is not how much they eat or exercise, but how much they sit, according to James Levine, MD, an obesity researcher at the Mayo Clinic. In a now famed 2005 study, Dr. Levine placed mildly obese and lean participants with similar, fairly healthy diets in
sensored "magic" underwear that recorded their body position every half second. The thin people spent a whopping 120 fewer minutes every day sitting, and the overweight people would have burned an average of 350 more calories if they'd engaged in as many non-exercise-related activities (i.e., puttering around). The take-home message: Sitting can have just as great an effect on your weight than eating or exercise, all because our metabolism engine is fueled by constant little movements. Sitting messes with your back Your powerful abdominal, pelvic, and leg muscles evolved to do the work of supporting your 100-plus pounds of organs and bones. "But when you sit, you're placing most of your weight directly on the spine and pelvis instead," explains Andrew Hecht, MD, co-chief of spinal surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. You're also forcing the natural S-curve of your spine into a C-shape, which isn't strong enough to take the pressure. "Imagine resting a heavy weight on top of the letter S or C," says Galen Cranz, PhD, author of The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body & Design. "Which is going to collapse more easily?" Sitting shortens your life How's this for a case against being on your bum? A long-term study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2010 followed nearly 70,000 healthy women and their daily habits for 14 years. After adjusting for risk factors including body mass index and smoking, researchers found that women who spent six hours a day sitting had a 37% increased risk of dying versus those who spent less than three hours a day seated. Also, death rates from cardiovascular disease were 2.7 times higher in women who sat six or more hours a day, regardless of how much they exercised or weighed.Yes, sitting literally kills.

Got Psoriasis? Signs You Have Arthritis Too By Megan Fennell
P
soriatic arthritis, a type of arthritis that affects people with the skin condition psoriasis, can attack the joints and tendons. About 22% of people with psoriasis who have not been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis appear to have symptoms of the condition, such as joint pain, swelling, and warmth, according to a 2011 survey by the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF). Based on the survey, which included 477 people and was funded by pharmaceutical companies, the NPF now recommends that doctors ask psoriasis patients these seven questions.
McGraw takes medication that provides some relief and delays joint damage. But he still has pain and stiffness, especially if he doesn't get enough rest. Since he's often on the road for his medical-sales job, his company allowed him to use an SUV that lets him step up into the driver's seat rather than bend down. Are your joints red, or hot to the touch? Psoriatic arthritis can be any kind of joint
inflammation, says Soumya Reddy, MD, codirector of the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Center at New York University Langone Medical Center, in New York City. "That doesn't mean just pain or swelling," she says. "It could be psoriatic arthritis if it feels like there's fluid inside the joints, or if the joints feel warm or have a red appearance." In the survey, 28% of psoriatic arthritis patients said their joints sometimes felt hot— but so did 9% of those who had only a psoriasis diagnosis.

Do your joints hurt? Sixty-seven percent of the people in the survey who had psoriatic arthritis reported joint pain, and their pain often moved from one joint to another. But even 21% of psoriasis-only patients had joint pain. Mark McGraw, 52, had joint pain for more than 15 years before he mentioned it to his doctor. "I just figured it was from playing tackle football or breaking horses at my ranch," he says. When the topic finally came up, his doctor asked why he had never mentioned it before. "'Because you're my dermatologist,'" he recalls saying. "'We talk about skin, not joints.'"

Are your joints stiff or tender? In the survey, 34% of psoriasis patients with an arthritis diagnosis had joint stiffness for more than two hours after waking, and trouble getting in and out of a car. (So did 14% of those without an arthritis diagnosis.)

MASQUERADE BALL AT TF ROYAL If you’ve always dreamed of being in a fairytale movie where ladies in dresses dance with handsome men in while keeping their identity secret behind a beautiful mask, then now is your chance to live out your dream. Men and women of all ages will be coming from near and far to enjoy a night of enchantment at a masquerade ball in Mayo over the Christmas period and the good news is you can join them! Make it your Christmas party night out with a group of friends, co-workers, family, or partner. Or maybe even bring your secret crush with you to reveal your true feelings at the end of the night. It is after all a magical time of year when anything can happen if you wish for it hard enough. The masquerade ball will keep everyone
guessing throughout the night as to who is behind each mask and whether or not they’ll reveal their secret identity. Will they tell you who they are? Will you tell them who you are? Will you dance with a handsome stranger and get lost in each others gaze under the moonlit night? All will be revealed at midnight when all will unveil their masks and expose their hidden identity. On the night all men are asked to wear black and all ladies are asked to wear dresses although whether you want to go all out and hire a full costume is entirely up to you. Personally we say go for it! When are you going to be at a masquerade ball again!! Masks are a must on the night so make sure to get the most mysterious mask you can find to add that hint of excitement to the night. There will also be a
competition for the best dressed man and lady on the night with amazing prizes for the lucky winners. Food will be provided on the night in the form of Viennese platters in keeping with the theme. Live music and a whole host of exciting surprises will take place throughout the evening so remember guys and girls to make sure you pull out all the stops on the night. The Masquerade Ball will take place on Saturday 3rd December 2011 in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, Co Mayo. The event will kick off at 8.30pm and masks are a must! Tickets cost E30 and proceeds are in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Places are filling up fast so make sure to book your ticket now. PUZZLE TIME ACROSS
By Megan Fennell
Hold your breath Try holding your breath. After a minute you will have used up most of the oxygen stored in your body and carbon dioxide will build up, triggering senses in your diaphragm to start breathing. You will experience an overwhelming urge to gulp some air, something which you will not be able to resist. On average, people can hold their breath for one minute, maybe two. The world record, however, is 11 minutes 35 seconds, set on June 8, 2009 by Stéphane Mifsud. In that time, even if you held your breath for a minute, you would have had to breathe 170 times because you breath 23,000 times a day! Stéphane Mifsud‘s amazing feat is the Static apnea record as established by the International Association for the Development of Free Diving. Inhalation of pure oxygen before the diving attempt is not allowed, which the Guinness World Record association does allow. They report the record for holding breath at 20 minutes 10 seconds, set on April 1, 2010 by Stig Severinsen. Also an amazing feat.

Free diving Scientists used to believe that lungs would collapse at 164 ft (50m).At depths of 328 ft (100m), the underwater pressure could shrink lungs to the size of an egg, it was thought. After all, water is 800 times thicker than air and weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon (1kg per liter). Even today, advanced scuba divers have a limit of 130 ft (40m). But in 1961 Sicilian Enzo Maiorca descended to 177 ft (54m) without breathing equipment. The first person to free-dive (with assistance but no breathing equipment) to 100m (328 ft) was Jacques Mayol, in 1976. On December 13, 2010, New Zealander William Trubridge became the first person to reach a depth of 100m without any assistance of any kind, even without fins. Legendary free-diver Italian Umberto Pellizzari, who can hold his breath for more than 6 minutes, was the first to free-dive to 150m (492 ft), in October 1999. In 2007, current record holder Herbert Nitsch reached an astounding 214m (702 ft). Now, that should take your breath away! Record for most passengers on an airplane It is not clear who was the first to fly an airplane: Richard Pearse, Gustave Whitehead or Orville Wright. Whoever it may have been, the distances of their flights were only about the length of the wingspan of a Boeing 747. They probably never imagined the amount of people an aircraft will be able to carry one day. The most passengers ever carried on one flight was in 1991 during the Operation Solomon evacuation of Ethiopian Jews during Operation Solomon. 1086 people boarded a 747 in Addis Ababa. When they landed in Jerusalem, there were 1089 passengers. Three babies were born during the flight.

Oedipus and the sphinx riddle The head of ancient Egyptian sphinxes portrayed the reigning pharaoh but also, when featuring the head of a falcon, represented the sky-god Horus or Amun-Re, with the head of a goat. When the Greeks adopted the sphinx it became a female monster. According to Greek legend the sphinx put a riddle to all who passed by and devoured those who failed to guess it. Getting it right meant the death of the monster a claim to the throne and the hand of Queen Jocasta. After many had died, one got it right: Oedipus.

What was the riddle that Oedipus solved? The riddle that the sphinx put: What animal walks on four legs in the morning, on two at noon, and on three at night? Oedipus’s answer: Man, for in the morning, the infancy of his life, he creeps on all fours; at noon, in his prime, he walks on two feet; and, when the darkness of old age comes over him, he uses a stick for better support as a third foot. Oedipus, a mythical Greek king, was the son of Queen Jocasta and therefore had to marry his mother.
The powerful machine inside you Your heart beats 101,000 times a day. During your lifetime it will beat :*+)* about 3 billion times and pump about 800 million pints (378 million litres) of blood. Anormal heart beats 70 to 80 times a minute. Over 70 3 to 80 years, it gives a few billion beats. It is the powerful machine inside you. A heart consists of two pumps, each made of two chambers. The right atrium squirts oxygen-depleted blood from the body into the right ventricle, which pumps it to the lungs. The left atrium squirts aerated blood from the lungs into the left ventricle, which pumps it out to the body. With each heartbeat, the two small atria contract together, then the two large ventricles, making the beating sound. A typical athlete’s heart churns out 6 to 8 gallons (25 to 30 litres) of blood per minute.
