CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS
S
ummer is a time for school classrooms and hallways to empty and the awaited anticipation of our childrens' fun and play time. Yet, emergency rooms across the country call summertime 'the trauma season for children.' From the heat to pools to bike riding, parents need to be on alert. Tragic drowning and farm fatalities
may seem like freak accidents that will never happen to someone in your family, but the reality is that these things can happen. Of course with the two summer months stretching ahead of parents, it is necessary to figure out ways of entertaining children, but by keeping them supervised at all times and implementing safety measures, you will ensure you remember the summer for all the right reasons.
During the Irish summer, sunny days are inevitably made the most of which means that paddling pools come out and opportunities to go to the beach are grabbed with both hands. As well as this, many families will venture abroad for a sun holiday where there will be a pool to splash about in. A child can drown in as little as two inches of water so water safety during the summer is vitally important, according to Irish Water Safety (IWS) 46
children have drowned in the past ten years. If you are by the pool on holidays you- or someone nominated to watch your child- should never take your eyes off him or her, particularly if there is no lifeguard on duty, which is often the case on foreign holidays. If the child is very small then he or she should definitely be wearing armbands and or a rubber ring. Continued on Page 2

Children face dangers on summer holidays continued from front page
Any parent or adult elected to watch a child while swimming should ideally be able to swim themselves and not be afraid to jump in to the water. Also, be sure to have a mobile phone handy in case the emergency services need to be called. At the beach do not swim where there are large waves or no lifeguards and be sure to pay heed to to signs at the beach as some beaches are not suitable for swimming at all, for example Strandhill Beach in Sligo which has a powerful undercurrent. This advice may be particularly important if you are outside your home county or country and hence unfamiliar with the beach. It is important to be water safety conscious in your own home too, check for any unsecured areas where water is present such as a paddling pool or water features like a pond and implement safety measures. Water sport safety is also an important factor to consider, check all sports equipment for the CE (Conformite Europeene) mark, which indicates that it meets safety requirements set down by EU law. The appropriate helmet should always be worn when undertaking activities such as cycling, skateboarding, hurling or water sports. The World Health Organisation estimates that the head trauma can be reduced by 69 percent when a helmet is worn during a collision or fall. 153 people died by drowning in 2009 and it is an offence to not wear a lifejacket on a boat or floatation device. Trampolines get uncovered during the summer months, the National Safety Authority of Ireland advises parents to be
vigilant and take special precautions when letting children play on trampolines this summer. When purchasing a trampoline, make sure it comes with a safety net and protective pads around the springs. Bouncy castles are also very popular during sunny weather, and with one fatal child accident already having occurred this year, it is extremely important that parents ensure that bouncy castles are erected and secured by professionals, that they are not used in very high winds and that children are supervised at all times when on a bouncy castle. Each year children die in tragic farm accidents, and according to data collected by the Health and Safety Authority Farm Safety Partnership Advisory Committee, the incidence of farm accidents is much higher during the Spring and Summer months. Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in Ireland. Over one third of all workplace fatalities in this country occur in farming with 20 percent involving children. Practically all involved family members with the major cause of childhood accidents involving tractors and machinery (58%) and drowning (21%) Farms are a high risk environment for children and there is therefore a major responsibility on the farmer to ensure that the risks posed to children are assessed and
controls put in place. Children should always be supervised at a farm. They should be kept away from machinery and prevented from climbing on outbuildings where they are in danger of falling. The dangers of the farm should be explained to children and young people and particular dangers such as slurry pits and falls should be identified and controlled. As well as this, any contractor or machine operator should be made aware of the possible presence of children. Farmers can read the Heath and Safety Authority Safety Code of Practice online to be made aware of all the possible risks on the farm involving machinery, livestock, electricity, outbuilding and chemicals.

PART punk folk poet troubadour, part gospel music energy preacher Jinx lennon will perform a free gig at The Forge Club Cootehall, Roscommon on June 25. Lennon, described in Mojo by Keith Allen as ''a brilliant soul singer, a cross between Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer and Ian Paisley'' has been uplifting and confounding Irish audiences since the of his first album launch in 2001. In 2006 Jinx was the subject of a documentary ''Noisemaker'' as part of the ''Arts/Lives ''series on RTE 1, featuring himself and his amazing stage partner Miss Paula Flynn. A radio play based on the songs and lyrics of Jinx Lennon called ''Know Your Station'' which was broadcast on RTE 1 as part of the ''Parlour Plays'' series has been shortlisted for the ''Prix Europa 2008”. Using raw garage punk ideals with hypnotic demented electro beats, sean nos, megaphone driven diatribes, his own brand of spoken word, dark humour, and a hip hop intricacy with detail Jinx has been hovering below the radar of the Irish music scene since the late nineties initially coming to attention for his anthem of rage ''Get The Guards''. He has released five acclaimed albums on his own label Septic Tiger, had guest spots at Oxegen and Electric Picnic, supported Christy Moore, Whipping Boy, The Fall and others. His latest album 'National Cancer Strategy' was picked as one of the Hot Press albums of the last year where writer Peter Murphy describes Jinx Lennon as ''The Nation's Greatest Protest Singer''. Jinx returns to clear out the energy vampires in our midst and sink his teeth into the darker side of life with some earthy observation and insight

MARKETING through a recession was the theme at the third annual contemporary marketing conference held recently at IT Sligo. “Critical to success of Irish brands is differentiation, passion, value and vision. There is a need to be better than your competition, offer the customer more benefits, and have a growth plan” said Dr Catherine McGuinn,
who is the marketing programme director. The keynote speaker, Professor Mary Lambkin of UCD, spoke about the great potential for Ireland and Irish companies to develop through branding. Professor Lambkin highlighted the positive aspects of Ireland and the need to move away from the negativity that has been permeating reporting in
the Irish media in order to drive the brand agenda forward. Niamh Banks of Avoca spoke about the challenges that Avoca faces in terms of expansion. The success of Avoca was illustrated, demonstrating the fact that Irish brands can grow and expand in a recession.Avoca is an example of how Irish brands can be distinctive - each Avoca store has a slightly different ambience.

She spoke on the subject of email campaigns and social networks in particular. The conference is an annual feature of the Master of Science in Marketing programme.
Ireland among EU’s cleanest swimming waters The bathing quality of Ireland’s inland waterways has been ranked second best in the EU, while our coastal water quality is in fifth place, according to a new Europe-wide survey. The 2010 annual Bathing Water report by the European Environment Agency also shows that Ireland has moved up five places from its 2009 ranking of 10th place. The study, which compares water quality in over 21,000 swimming sites across the EU, puts Cyprus at the top of the list with 100 per cent of its bathing water areas meeting strict criteria. Next comes Croatia with 97 per cent, Malta on 95 per cent, Greece on 94 and Ireland in fifth place with 90 per cent of clean spots to swim.
The good news follows the increase in the numbers of Blue Flags awarded to Irish beaches this year. Among those who received the internationally-recognised accolade were Céibh An Spidéal in Galway and Old Head Beach in Mayo. Commenting from Brussels, Northwest MEP Jim Higgins welcomed both the increase in Blue Flags and the improvement in bathing water quality. “Ireland’s scenic attributes are a primary reason for attracting tourists and it’s essential that our coastal and inland bathing sites are also enticing,” said the Fine Gael MEP. One problem remains… Irish bathing waters remain among the chilliest in Europe.

The GAA has announced a reduction of 5 on all adult stand prices and terrace prices for this year’s GAA Football and Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championships up to and including semi finals. This reduction combined with the GAA Season Ticket offer and other GAA ticket packages ensures that the Association remains to the fore in terms of value for money. This decrease will remain in place for all Central Council fixtures until the conclusion of the GAA Senior Championship semi-finals in both Hurling and Football. “The GAA recognises the need to encourage patrons to attend our games and this price cut signals our intent to ensure our supporters continue to engage with and follow our Championship
games.” Uachtarán Chumann Luthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana said. Prices for the opening round of the GAA All-Ireland Qualifiers in both codes have been reduced to 15 for entry to the stand and 10 for terrace. Juveniles can enter the stand for 5 or the terrace free of charge. Up until the semi-finals clubs can also avail of group passes for adult members which are 10 each, as well as another group offer where juveniles enter for 3 with one adult gaining free entry for every ten children. Ticket prices for the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Finals in 2011 will be 80. The All-Ireland finals are significant national events and 80% of all revenues are directed back to our Clubs.

North-West and South-East battle it out for final Irish Surf Team position! AS the crowds gather in Bundoran and the Battle of the Bands takes place at the annual Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival, a different type of battle will be taking place less than 500 metres away – a battle in the water! Donegal’s John “JB” Britton will go head to head or “fin to fin” with Waterford’s Keith O’Brien in an encounter that will decide the remaining position on the Irish surf team to compete in the seniors division at the European Surfing Championships “Eurosurf” in the town in September. Since January, hundreds of Irish surfers have competed in selection events across the west and north coast with the hope of accumulating enough points to make the grade for the Irish surf team. Following the fourth and final event in Portrush, Keith and John found themselves tied on points for the final place on the team. Having grown up in Rossnowlagh with the surname Britton, surfing is in John’s blood and he enjoys nothing more than taking his favourite board down to the famous drive-on beach and letting rip in the Atlantic waters. A primary teacher by profession John recently made the move home from Dublin with his wife Fiona to
Too much TV ups diabetes, heart risk WATCHING television is one of the most common daily activities undertaken by people around the world. However, scientists have found that prolonged television viewing is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature death. According to US researchers, many people worldwide divide their days largely between working, sleeping and watching television. Europeans spend an average of 40% of their daily free time in front of the TV, while Australians spend 50%. This corresponds to three to four hours of daily viewing, which is still less than the reported average of five hours per day in the US. The negative health effects of TV viewing have been documented in prior studies, including associations with reduced physical activity levels and unhealthy diets. The researchers decided to investigate this further. They carried out a major analysis of all published studies from 1970 to 2011 that linked TV viewing with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature death. The results showed that more than two hours of TV viewing per day increased the risk
of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, while more than three hours of daily viewing increased the risk of premature death. In fact, for each additional two hours of TV viewing per day, the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature death increased by 20, 15, and 13% respectively. Based on disease incidence in the US, the researchers estimated that among 100,000 individuals per year, each two-hour increment in TV viewing per day was associated with 176 new cases of type 2 diabetes, 38 new cases of fatal cardiovascular disease and 104 new cases of allcause mortality. The team from the Harvard School of Public Health found that the effect of prolonged television viewing on type 2 diabetes was to some extent explained by the unfavorable influence of TV viewing on obesity. Obesity is related to unhealthy eating habits and low activity levels, major risk factors for both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. "The message is simple. Cutting back on TV watching can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and premature mortality. We should not only promote increasing physical activity levels, but also reduce sedentary behaviors, especially prolonged TV watching," commented lead researcher, • Limestone, Marble and Granite Prof Frank Hu. nearby Ballyshannon. John is familiar with the Eurosurf competition having competed for Ireland in both the 1996 event held in Portugal and the 1998 event held in France – both times in the open division, and is sponsored by Fin McCools. Having caught the surfing bug from my brothers at an early age of 13, Keith grew up surfing in the competitive environment of Tramore in Co. Waterford. He currently lives in Dublin with wife Eva and works as a software engineer. Keith has competed for the Irish team on 4 occasions, Eurosurf in Portugal (1999) and at the World Surfing Games – Portugal ’98, Brazil ’00, South Africa ’02. Keith spends his weekend chasing the best North Atlantic swells around the country – he starts checking the charts on a Wednesday evening and can be found parked up at the best waves first thing Saturday morning – the ultimate weekend warrior! At both aged 32 and 12 days between their birthdays, the “Sea Sessions Surf-off” should provide an entertaining spectacle for viewers as both men clamber to secure the vital points that will lead to a place on the Irish surf team and the honour of representing their country on the European stage this September.

Groundbreaking new treatment for CF
The study was carried out by scientists at Queen's University Belfast
NORTHERN Irish scientists have developed a groundbreaking new drug treatment for sufferers of cystic fibrosis (CF) - Ireland's most common life threatening inherited disease. CF affects the glands, damaging many organs including the lungs,
pancreas, digestive tract and reproductive system. It causes a thick, sticky mucus to be produced, blocking the lung's bronchial (air) tubes and preventing the body's natural enzymes from digesting food. Ireland currently has the highest prevalence of CF, and also has the
most severe strain of the CF gene, in the developed world. The new drug treatment will benefit sufferers who have the so-called ‘Celtic Gene' - known as G551D - the genetic mutation which is particularly common in Ireland. However, the scientists emphasised that the drug
TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMEN & STONE CARVERS IN MAYO SINCE 1909
will benefit all other CF sufferers too. The study was carried out by scientists at Queen's University Belfast, the University of Ulster, the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and teams of researchers in Europe, the US and Australia. It showed significant improvements in lung function, quality of life and a reduction in disease flare ups in those receiving the new treatment. The drug, VX-770, is the first aimed at the basic defect in CF to show an effect. It is still too early to determine whether this treatment will improve life expectancy, but the improvements in the breathing tests and the reduction in flare-ups suggest that survival will be better. According to Stuart Elborn, director in the Centre for Infection and Immunity at Queen's University and co-leader of the study, the development of this drug is significant because it is the first to show that treating the underlying cause of CF may have profound effects on the disease, ‘even among people who have been living with it for decades'. "The remarkable reductions in sweat chloride observed in this study support the idea that VX-770 improves protein function thereby
addressing the fundamental defect that leads to CF," he explained. Meanwhile, according to Dr Judy Bradley, of the University of Ulster, the drug ‘opens the defective channel in the lung cells of people with CF and allows proper lung clearance of bacteria'. "This is a groundbreaking treatment because it treats the basic defect caused by the gene mutation in patients. Correcting the cells with this mutation shows that treatments aimed at the basic mutation can work, leading to improvements in lung function and symptoms," she said. As a result of their recent work, the researchers from Queen's University, the University of Ulster and clinicians from Belfast Health and Social Care Trust have been selected to join the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Clinical Trials Network. This means CF researchers in Northern Ireland will be collaborating with their European counterparts to work towards improved treatments for CF on a global level. Meanwhile, the new drug is due to be submitted for licensing in the autumn of this year and is expected to be available to patients by as early as next year.

The European Commission (EC) has launched a major new anti-smoking campaign, aimed at 25-34 year-olds. The campaign, ‘Ex-smokers are unstoppable', which will run for three years, aims to focus on the positive effects of quitting smoking. Smoking is currently the single biggest cause of avoidable illness in the European Union (EU). The habit kills over 650,000 EU citizens every year. The campaign is aimed at smokers aged between 25 and 34 - almost 28 million people in the EU. It aims to highlight what smokers can gain from quitting the habit and uses ex-smokers and their achievements to promote this. Over the coming three years, different issues will be targeted and particular attention will be paid to specific groups, such as women and lower socio-economic groups. This will be achieved through a mixture of advertising, social media and events. "Young people start smoking because they are led to think it is cool. They continue smoking because tobacco is addictive. Over 650,000 people die from smoking in the EU every year
because tobacco is highly toxic. "Public authorities have a role to play in helping citizens break this cycle of addiction and avoid death and illness. This is what the campaign is about. I am confident that it will help smokers understand they have much to gain from quitting," commented the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, John Dalli. The first tobacco control legislation in the EU was introduced in the 1980s. Since then, EU legislation and policy has been further developed in the areas of product regulation, advertising and protecting people from second hand smoke, as well as prevention of tobacco use, awareness raising and support for cessation. According to the EC, despite previous advances in this area, one-third of Europeans ‘still light up on a regular basis' and many continue to die from smoking-related illnesses. "This is not only a human tragedy but a major health and socio-economic concern as it places a greater burden on public health systems and robs Europe of a workforce which is needed to drive competitiveness," the EC said.
Ireland to Tokyo in two hours:
Blueprints for 3,000mph hypersonic plane are unveiled ...but it will take 40 years to build
Currently used in missiles, these are highly efficient at speeds above 1,000mph, but cannot work from a standing start. They will help take the plane up to altitudes of 20 miles as it cruises at speeds beyond Mach 4. Cruising altitude for conventional passenger jets is around six miles. Once at cruising speed, the plane – dubbed ZEHST, for Zero Emission Hypersonic Transportation – could fly from Dublin to Malaga in southern Spain in just 45 minutes. A flight to Istanbul would take 30 minutes, and the plane could reach the east coast of the U.S. in around one hour. A computer-generated handout image of the 'Zero Emission Hypersonic Transportation'
I
T will take only two hours to fly from Dublin to Tokyo, be virtually pollution free, and promises to be no louder than today’s modern planes. There’s only one catch for prospective commuters – it will be another 40 years before commercial flights take place. Plans were yesterday unveiled for the first hypersonic passenger jet, which would use three sets of engines to reach 3,125mph, more than four times the speed of sound, known as Mach 4. Hailed as the heir to Concorde, the aircraft would be propelled by a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, meaning its only emissions would be water. The project, developed by Airbus’s parent company EADS, was unveiled before the official opening of the Paris Air Show last week. Carrying up to 100 passengers, a set of conventional jet engines would help launch the aircraft from a normal airport runway, meaning the aircraft would not produce the noisy ‘sonic boom’ that Concorde did. Once at a suitable height, the
pilot would engage a pair of rocket engines which would propel the aircraft to much higher speeds and soar above the atmosphere, allowing a final set of engines known as ramjets to be utilised.
'It is not a Concorde but it looks like a Concorde, showing that aerodynamics of the 1960s were already very smart'
Heir: The new plane is being hailed as the successor to Concorde but will be propelled by a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, meaning its only emissions would be water.
The plane is not expected to be operational until around 2040, according to EADS officials
It would knock some nine hours off the flying time to Tokyo, while the journey to Sydney would take around three-and-a-half hours. After a gliding descent, the conventional engines will reignite to enable landing. Jean Botti, innovation and technology director at EADS, said: ‘It is not a Concorde but it looks like a Concorde, showing that aerodynamics of the 1960s were already very smart. ‘The plane would fly just above the atmosphere, meaning it could fly at more than 3,000mph. 'When you are above the atmosphere nobody hears anything. We’ve been working on this project for long enough now to know it is viable.’ Unlike conventional aircraft, the plane would be powered by biofuels made from seaweed – hydrogen and oxygen – therefore making it one of the world’s most eco-friendly aircraft. The company, based in Toulouse, France, believes a plane capable of carrying up to 100 passengers could make its
first commercial flight within 40 years. But its limited capacity could be a major flaw, according to aviation experts. David Kaminski-Morrow, air transport editor at Flight International, said: ‘It is still very much a concept vehicle, but it is within capability, the technology is available. The real difficulty is the economics of making a completely new type of aircraft work. NOBEL Peace Prize Laureate John Hume visited IT Sligo yesterday, June 13th, to inaugurate a hall which has been named in his honour. Located in the Student Services Building which formed part of the Institute’s recent 12 million capital development plan, Hume Hall is a 250 seat multipurpose facility. Speaking after the unveiling of a plaque at the hall, Mr Hume expressed his delight at having the facility named after him: “I’m very
honoured that this fine new facility is to be called Hume Hall. I’m a strong believer that education and educational institutions should act as community connectors so it’s particularly fitting that this Hall is to be used by IT Sligo to host community events as well as Institute events.” As Hume Hall is located in the Student Services Building, proposals were sought from the Students’ Union for a figure to name the hall after and the politician and peace
process advocate was their choice. The Student Services Building is home to services such as the careers and access offices, health and counselling services and the students’ union offices. Hume Hall is used for a variety of purposes including clubs and society events, examination and conferences such as the International CEO panel discussion on Global Prospects for Irish Talent held during Enterprise and Innovation Week in March. President of IT Sligo, Professor Terri Scott welcomed John Hume and his wife Pat to the Institute; “We’re delighted that John could join us to officially inaugurate the new Hume Hall. John has always been a tireless advocator of education and civil rights and his contribution to Irish society and the North West region in particular is quite simply, immeasurable. “On behalf of all the staff and students at IT Sligo, I would like to thank John and Pat for visiting the Institute for the inauguration of the hall. Hume Hall is a wonderful facility for IT Sligo and for the wider community,” she said. As Mr Hume’s visit fell on the same day as W.B.Yeats' birthday, Professor Scott presented John with a framed photo of Benbulben with an inscription from one of Yeats’ poems, The Wanderings of Oisin.

Donegal Rally win for Tim McNulty Tim McNulty (left) won the Donegal International Rally, keeping cool over the day’s final eight stages in Inishowen to finish 1:19 ahead of second placed Alastair Fisher. McNulty and co-driver Paul Kiely from Sligo led the event from stage four on the first day The wet conditions today did not prove a problem for McNulty and the victory never looked in doubt. He stayed over a minute clear of Fisher’s Fiesta throughout the day and going into the final two stages, set in Buncrana Town, McNulty was leading by 1 minute and 16 seconds. McNulty held his nerve on the final two short town stages to win his second event in this year’s Irish Tarmac Rally Championship following his victory in Galway earlier this year. Fisher held off the challenge of Daragh O’Riordan for second, with O’Riordan fastest on half of today’s stages. Kevin Barrett finished in fourth with Garry Jennings taking fifth place. Success for Sligo Man Paul Kiely in the Navigator's seat with Tim McNulty. The pair are the overall winners of the Donegal International Rally. Photo: James Burke/www.jamesburke.biz

T-shirt recharges mobile phones
Website suffers 'ugly' invasion GLASTONBURY revellers may have an extra incentive to elbow their way closer to the stages - it may help charge their phones. Mobile phone giant Orange has released a prototype t-shirt which powers mobiles while festival-goers watch bands in action. Users can plug their phone in to the tshirt, which uses noise-responsive technology, for a quick top-up charge whenever they need it. Orange will be conducting live testing of the gadget on site at the festival to see which acts are the "best to charge to" around the Spirit of 71 stage. Tony Andrews, co-producer of the Spirit of 71, said: "Sound vibrations, particularly bass frequencies, will create enough shaking to produce electricity from a material as simple as piezoelectric film. "It looks like it could provide a real solution to mobile charging and I'm interested to see how the Orange Sound Charge performs in a live testing environment such as Glastonbury." Andrew Pearcey, head of sponsorship at Orange UK, said: "In a vibrant festival environment such as Glastonbury, sound is such an obvious medium that it seemed like a natural fit to use it in the development of this year's prototype."
Man tracks stolen laptop online
Police in California have returned the stolen laptop of a man who tracked its location using software that also sent him photos of another man using it in bed while shirtless, among other images. Joshua Kaufman, of Oakland, California, said he retrieved the laptop on Wednesday, a day after police arrested the 27-year-old man in the photographs. Muthanna Aldebashi is being held on a charge of suspicion of possessing stolen property. Mr Kaufman said a burglar broke into his apartment on March 21 and stole the laptop. He said he activated theft-tracking software that tracked its location and took screenshots and photographs of its user. He said he took the data to police but had no luck getting them to help, so he posted the photos online. He said police contacted him after his efforts went viral.
A social networking site for "beautiful people" has been hit by a "Shrek" virus which allowed tens of thousands of "ugly" applicants to sign up. Members of BeautifulPeople .com must traditionally pass a strict "rating" stage where existing
users vote on whether someone is attractive enough to be accepted into the online community. But this screening process was brought down last month, allowing anyone to join, regardless of their looks. Owners have apologised to more
than 30,000 "unfortunate" people who were "wrongly admitted" to the site and subsequently banished. "We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil paint-
ing," managing director Greg Hodge said. "We responded immediately, repairing the damage from the Shrek virus and putting every new member back into the rating module for a legitimate and democratic vote. The result is that we have lost over 30,000 recent members." The origin of the "Shrek" virus is still being investigated internally but it is believed a former employee may have been responsible. A spokesman said the sabotage was initially believed to have been caused by one of the 5.5 million people rejected from the site. Safeguards are now in place to prevent any further infiltrators who do not come up to the expected standards, the site said. It insisted member privacy and security was never breached and has set up a hotline to help recently rejected applicants come to terms with the news.
Mystery of the Pottermore website HARRY Potter author JK Rowling has launched a mysterious new website. A spokeswoman for the writer said it was a new project for the author, but was not a new book. Clicking on the site, pottermore.com, takes readers to a clock counting down the seconds until Rowling makes an announcement about the project on June 23. It is not directly related to the final Potter film, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which comes out next month. Rowling's spokeswoman, Rebecca Salt, said: "There is a holding page up at the moment. It is a new project and not a new book and it's not directly related to the film. We are not saying anything more at
the moment." The web page features two watchful owls and the scrawled message "Coming Soon". It takes users to a YouTube page with the message "The owls are gathering... Find out why soon" and an invitation to watch Rowling's announcement later this month. "Pottermore" was trademarked in 2009 by Warner Bros, which distributes the Potter films. The trademark description of Pottermore suggests an interactive site "providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards" and "online facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest". Edinburgh-based Rowling already has a personal website, at www.jkrowling.com
Airbus plans transparent plane A futuristic concept of air travel in which passengers will be able to gaze up at sunny or starry skies through a transparent cabin has been presented by plane maker Airbus in London. The concept cabin for travellers in 2050 would be a bionic structure that mimics the efficiency of bird bone. It would provide strength where needed, and also allows for an "intelligent" cabin wall membrane which controls air temperature and can become transparent to give passengers open, panoramic views. The cabin would have seats that fit passengers' body shapes and travellers might be able to read bedtime stories to their children back home, Airbus said.
Showing off its concept cabin, the company also said that mid-century passengers might be able to enjoy a game of virtual golf or take part in interactive conferences, while the cabin "identifies and responds" to travellers' needs. The cabin of the future follows last year's unveiling of the Airbus concept plane - packed with technologies to reduce fuel burn, emissions, waste and noise - and includes new personalised zones to replace the traditional cabin classes. The "vitalising zone" helps passengers relax, with vitamin and antioxidant-enriched air, mood lighting, aromatherapy and acupressure treatments. In the "interactive zone" there are virtual popup projections taking passengers to whichever so-
cial scene they want to be in, from holographic gaming to virtual changing rooms for active shoppers. The "smart tech zone" is tailored towards the more functional-orientated passenger with what Airbus describes as "a chameleon-style offering, to meet individual needs ranging from a simple to a complete luxury service, but all allowing you to continue life as if on the ground". Airbus engineering executive vice-president Charles Champion said: "Our research shows that passengers of 2050 will expect a seamless travel experience while also caring for the environment. The concept cabin is designed with that in mind, and shows that the journey can be as much a voyage of discovery as the destination."

Careful driving costs Autoglass jobs
w rldnews Designer creates solar powered bikini
CAR windscreen repair company Autoglass is blaming careful driving for the loss of 400 jobs. The losses include 300 full time and 100 temporary members of staff. The economic climate has been blamed for a sharp fall in cracked and chipped windscreens and the firm's resultant loss of business. According to company bosses, the recent recession and rising petrol and diesel prices are forcing motorists to drive slower and preserve fuel. The knock-on effect is a reduction in the number of chipped windscreens, and the demand for repairs has fallen by 11 percent already this year. Autoglass's main rival, Auto Windscreens, has already felt the bite, as it went into administration in February. A memo leaked to 'The Sun' newspaper, written by the boss of Autoglass's owner, Beltron, confirmed the job losses, but said that the company had reduced its staff numbers every summer due to a drop in trade. It continued: "Unfortunately, we need to reduce the number of people employed in our business by more than we have done in previous years. I realise this is a difficult message to absorb." The losses represent a significant proportion of Belron's total staff of about 3,000.

Skinny dippers strip off for record bid
Chauffeur-driven luxury cars now cheaper than the tube
FOUR hundred skinny dippers stripped off and plunged into the sea at Rhossili Beach in Wales to set a new world record. They braved the cold and tore off their clothes shortly before 8am, and ran into the water shrieking, reports Metro. The existing record is believed to stand at 250 naked bathers in one location, and organisers will submit evidence to adjudicators at Guinness World Records in an attempt to claim the title. Skinny dipper Lizzy White, 25, said: "I have flown in from Australia to take part - what was I thinking of? "But it was great fun and very exhilarating to strip off and dive into the waves, even if they are a lot colder than what I'm used to." Organisers hope the sponsored event, to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity and the National Trust, will bring in more than £5,000. Alison Powell said: "It was great fun - I have never seen so many happy smiling faces. We hoped for 300 people but in the end we got a lot more - I'm delighted with the turn out." Many of the nudists posed to have their photographs taken in the shallows to prove to their sponsors that they took part in the event. Sue Jones, 39, of Carmarthen, said: "I'm putting my picture on Facebook for all to see. I've skinny dipped before in Greece and Spain. This was the first time in Wales - and the last!"

up with the idea during a brainstorming session at New York University. "I didn't really have anything exciting so I leaned over to my friend and just jokingly said that I was
going to make a bikini that could cool your beer at the beach," he said. He then decided there was some merit in the idea and started work on developing a prototype - before realising there were an important stumbling block. "The original bikini didn't have enough surface area to kick out the juice necessary to... cool the beer, so I downgraded to a lower power device. I plugged in my iPod and it worked," he said. He is now selling the iKinis with prices ranging from £300 to £900 with each one custom-built and tailor-made for the wearer. The designer now plans to go back to his original idea by developing shorts for men that can keep drinks cold. "We're currently building and testing prototypes for the iDrink. It's just going to have to have more surface area so we're using men's board shorts," he explained.
TUBE fare hikes mean that it can be cheaper to travel the same distance across London in a chauffeur-driven £250,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom. It's estimated that celebrity owners of such cars, like David Beckham, Simon Cowell and Sir Alan Sugar, pay less to travel through the centre of the capital than those using public transport. Tube fares can, unbelievably, be up to 50 percent more expensive than travelling by luxury car. The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) has calculated that hire costs for a RollsRoyce Phantom start at £200 per hour, including a chauffeur. That works out to around £16 per mile in central London, while a single tube ticket can now equate to as much as £24 per mile. The ETA is encouraging drivers to ditch their cars in favour of environmentally friendly methods of travel as part of Green Transport Week (this week). However, the organisation has slammed high public transport fares, claiming that they continue to dissuade motorists from leaving their cars at home. Even if it does work out cheaper, travelling one kilometre in a Rolls-Royce Phantom creates 377g of CO2 - five times that of an equivalent tube journey. Director of the ETA, Andrew Davis, said: "Luckily for Londoners, the healthiest, greenest and quickest way of getting about is also the cheapest - cycling wins hands down."

The Best Exercises to Boost Your Metabolism Can’t seem to lose those last few pounds, even with diet and exercise? Your metabolism could be to blame. Not all of us are blessed with a high metabolic rate, but by making some simple changes to your exercise routine, you can boost your metabolism and help your body burn more calories, even when you’re resting. “You absolutely can increase your metabolic rate with exercise,” says fitness expert Cindy Whitmarsh, a trainer on ExerciseTV and author of 101 Ways to Work out With Weights.“Muscle burns more calories than fat does, so the more muscle you build, the higher your resting metabolic rate will be. Every muscle cell you gain is like a little internal fire that burns calories, even while you’re sleeping.” Here are Whitmarsh’s top
tips for revving up your routine, plus the best exercises to boost your metabolism. Get Cross-training If you’ve fallen into a predictable pattern of biking or walking every day, try cross-training to get your body out of its rut and stimulate more muscle growth.Try running on Monday, stair-climbing on Tuesday, weight training on Wednesday, boxing on Thursday, cycling on Friday and jumping rope on Saturday. Pump up Your Heart Rate Keeping your heart rate elevated for at least 30 minutes during your cardio routine will boost your metabolism and help your body burn fat faster.Whitmarsh recommends keeping your heart rate within 65 to 85 % of

your heart rate maximum, which you can find by subtracting your age from 220. Multiply that number by 0.65 and then by 0.85 to find this magic fat-burning range. Then, use a heart rate monitor while exercising to help stay in that range. Try Interval Training Interval training -- alternating high-intensity exercise bursts with lower-intensity activities -- will break up a stale workout and boost your metabolism. “You’re building muscle and increasing your heart rate so it will stay elevated for a longer time after your workout, and you’ll burn calories longer,” says Whitmarsh. Keep It Up The last secret to boosting your metabolism is to choose multifunctional exercises that maximize your muscle gain by working many body parts at once. Whitmarsh’s top five exercises to boost your metabolism can all be done easily at home: 1. Mountain-climbers: Start on the floor in a hands-and-knees position. Lift one bent knee close to your chest.Alternate your knees into your chest by tapping your toes to the floor and back. Repeat 20 to 50 times without stopping. 2. Eight-count Body-builder With Push-up: Start at standing pose. Bring hands to the floor, jump feet back into a high plank. Jump feet out wide, do a push-up, jump feet back together, jump feet back to hands and stand up. Repeat five to 15 times. 3. Squat Into Bicep Curls

A Happier, Healthier Girls' Night Out By Megan Fennell Head out with your friends Break out your Manolos! Here's how to have a fab time—and still feel fine in the a.m. Invite Right We all need the occasional bevy over beer, but be sure to include upbeat friends in your party. Research from Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, found that every happy person in your social circle can raise your spirits by 9 percent. Brighten Up Wearing spring colors like yellow and pink may help you feel happier and more energized, experts say. Think Thinner The chips and guac are calling? Try this: Start a convo with a friend who has no problem saying no. “Just thinking about her—how long you’ve known her, what her traits are—that’s enough to help you stay in control,” says Michelle vanDellen, PhD, a visiting psychology professor at the University of Georgia, who has done a number of studies on this surprising effect. “Even just keeping some pictures of people whose habits you admire on your phone could help.” This trick can improve your own willpower by bringing certain thoughts, like self-control, to the front of your mind. Detox Deliciously If you see an asparagus appetizer on the menu, order it. The veggie is chock full of amino acids important to metabolizing alcohol, so it may ease hangovers, whether you eat it before or after drinking, according to a study in the Journal of Food Science.

The Triton Disaster
blast past from the
Looking back at the 50’s
The Quiet Man hits the big screen Sep 5th 1954, KLM passenger flight 633 from Amsterdam to New York gets into difficulty after take off, crashing into a mud-bank on the river Shannon. It was only a minute after the plane embarked on its transatlantic leg from Shannon Airport, where it had stopped to refuel, when the Triton experienced an unexpected re-extension of the landing gear, which failed to give the pilot Adrian Viruly time to react and bring the plane to safety. Although the crash site was only 2.5 miles away from airports, nobody was aware of the disaster. Rescue operations only began when the aircraft's navigator escaped the wreck and floated across the river, reaching the airport extremities. When the Triton was discovered, it was partially submerged and at least one of the fuel tanks ruptured during the crash. The plane which set off with 46 passengers and crew, but only 18 survived. The fuel fumes rendered many passengers and crew unconscious, who then drowned in the rising tide. Three members of staff lost their lives and twenty-five passengers, many of whom were from the Netherlands, where the journey began.
Nora Barnacle dies
1951, Nora Barnacle, the wife of James Joyce and the inspiration for Bloomsday passes away in Zurich, suffering from acute renal failure. While as a young woman, she was often described as a 'man killer' after her teen romance Michael Feeney died of typhoid and another admirer suddenly dropped dead. On the 16th of June 1904, she went on a date with James Joyce, which later became the setting for Ulysses. The couple embarked on a long romance, marrying only in 1931.
1952, an epic romantic comedy featuring some of Mayo and Galway's beautiful landscape treasures hit the big screen, putting Ireland on the map. The film by John Ford was based on Maurice Walsh's story 'Green Rushes' and starred John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Many scenes were shot at Ashford Castle in Cong, Clew Bay and the 12 Pin Hills. The film tells the story of Sean Thronton, an Irish-American from Pittsburgh, who returns to Ireland in the 1930's to reclaim his family's farm in Innisfree. He meets and falls in love with the fiery Mary Kate Danaher, the spinster sister of the bullying, loud-mouthed landowner "Red". The film was a financial success grossing $3.8 million in its first year of release. This was among the top ten grosses of the year. The film won academy awards for Cinematography and John Ford won the best Director gong that year.
1954: The Marian Year 1954 was also known as 'The Marian year', to honour the special devotion to Our Lady. Shrines and grottos, decorated with Mary medallions and statues of 'the mother of God' were erected on roadsides and on terrain across the northwest of Ireland. Even today, you can still see marian shrines in towns-lands across Mayo, Sligo, Galway, Roscommon and Leitrim. They vary from just a small statue set into a wall, to large, elaborately constructed tableaux's. In 1953, with the encyclical Fulgens Corona, Pope Pius ordered a Marian year for 1954, the first in Church history. The year was filled with Marian initiatives, in the areas of mariology, cultural events, and charity and social gatherings. As well as erecting hundreds of shrines commemorative stamps were issued, the Irish named many girls born that year Marian, the number of young women entering convents soared and on May 16th 30,000 people marched through the centre of Dublin to celebrate Queenship of Mary. The tradition of devotion to Mary persisted after 1954, albeit among ever declining numbers, though it is one now confined mainly to an older generation. It is a sign of the times that there was another Marian Year in the late 1980s which passed pretty much unnoticed by the bulk of the Irish population.

Bananas are the world’s most popular fruit after tomatoes. In western countries, they could account for 3% of a grocer’s total sales. Bananas consistently are the number one compliant of grocery shoppers. Most people complain when bananas are overripe or even freckled. The fact is that spotted bananas are sweeter, with a sugar content of more than 20%, compared with 3% in a green banana. Eskimos use refrigerators to keep food from freezing

LAST ISSUE’S
Freezing is one of the easiest, most convenient, and least timeconsuming methods of preserving foods. Freezing does not sterilize foods; the extreme cold simply retards the growth of microorganisms and slows down chemical changes that affect quality or cause food to spoil. Eskimos also use refrigerators to keep food from freezing. But why would they if they live in below-zero temperatures? Well, will you just leave meat or food on the table or somewhere if you have a refrigerator in the house? When out on the ice-covered plains, where you won’t find refrigerators, Eskimos put food in bags made of seal skins to shield it from exposure.
ANSWERS
Tomato is world’s most popular fruit The tomato is the world’s most popular fruit. And yes, just like the brinjal and the pumpkin, botanically speaking it is a fruit, not a vegetable. More than 60 million tons of tomatoes are produced per year, 16 million tons more than the second most popular fruit, the banana.

PAUL MUSGROVE PRINT SHOW Way Out West”, an exhibition of unique woodblock prints by artist Paul Musgrove, continues at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for the month of June. “Way Out West” was inspired by a sea trip made by the artist around Scotland’s Small Isles, the West coast of Skye and the Outer Hebrides, and the thick fog that accompanied, and inspired, the artist on much of the journey. Paul commenced his artistic career in the 80s working in glass, and turned to printmaking in 2009. He
has exhibited widely in the UK, and also in Japan. In addition to “Way Out West”, Paul will also be showing a selection of recent etchings, drypoint and woodblock prints. The exhibition runs until Saturday 25th June. The Linenhall Gallery is open to the general public Monday-Friday from 10.00am - 5.00pm; Saturday from 11.00am-5.30pm. Admission to exhibitions is free. ising temperatures and glorious sunny days make summer an ideal season for getting work done around the house. Whether you’re cooling off indoors or working on your tan, take the time to perform some simple, routine home maintenance. You’ll have a safer home if you catch problems and wear-and-tear before they become hazards.
healthy plants should be removed so that others may thrive. Lush green grass is of course desirable; however, it is not always realistic or water-efficient. Encourage healthy grass growth with regular mowing, but remember: Keeping grass cut longer in the summer months will prevent roots from drying out as quickly.
Also, before planting additional trees and shrubs in your garden, take into consideration the plant's size when mature and whether or not roots might intrude upon underground pipes or paved surfaces such as paths and driveways.
Home Exterior Care and Landscaping Take advantage of the warm weather and wash the outside of your windows and clean the siding. While it might be tempting to use a pressure washer, a garden hose is best to avoid potentially damaging the exterior of your home.Apply a coat of fresh paint if needed, and repair any damaged vinyl or aluminum siding. Well-tended landscaping and a trim and tidy house are as welcoming to guests as the smells of a barbeque. Garden beds look their best when mulched and weeded. Summer annuals can be induced to produce more flowers and bloom longer when you deadhead them. Removing spent flowers also prevents the plant from going to seed. Garage Upkeep Hazardous materials such as paint and solvents should be disposed of properly. Don’t store heat-sensitive or combustible materials in the garage, as the temperature will be rising throughout the season. Inspect the floor for grease spots from leaking car fluids, and have your car serviced promptly if you find any.
Grass and plants should be watered in the morning to allow the water to soak through the soil throughout the day in order to completely nourish their root systems. Check to see if your council has water conservation restrictions before watering your lawn or garden. Trees provide shady ambience and should be well cared for to avoid potential damage to your home. Keep their branches pruned and at a safe distance from your home to avoid storm-related damage. Inspect trees for signs of decay, such as cracks or hollowed limbs, and keep branches clear of your home and power lines. Arborists or tree care professionals can assist with the cutting and removal of large or high limbs.
If you have children, instruct them not to go in the garage unaccompanied. Store your hand tools and power tools behind a lock and key. Fertilizers, weed-killers, and pesticides should be stored out of a child’s reach or behind a locked cabinet. You might also consider organic gardening, which employs nontoxic alternatives to these poisonous chemicals.
Driveways And Paths Inspect the pavement for cracks and holes, and fix them. This goes a long way in preventing accidental slips, trips, and falls. It also works to avoid larger repairs or resurfacing in the future. If you see weeds popping up between cracks in the pavement, resist the urge to pull them up. You’ll remove the upper part of the weed, but the root system will remain intact and new growth will return within a few weeks. For a cost-effective solution, boil water in a kettle, carefully carry the kettle outside, and pour the water on any weeds to kill them off for the season
